Abstract
Acenes are attractive as building blocks for low gap organic materials with applications, for example, in organic light emitting diodes, solar cells, bioimaging and diagnostics. Previously, we have shown that modification of dipyridylanthracene via B-N Lewis pair fusion (BDPA) strongly redshifts the emission, while facilitating self-sensitized reactivity toward O2 to reversibly generate the corresponding endoperoxides. Herein, we report on the further expansion of the π-system of BDPA to a vinyl-substituted monomer, vinylene-bridged dimer, and a polymer with an average of 20 chromophores. The extension of π-conjugation results in largely reduced band gaps of 1.8 eV for the dimer and 1.7 eV for the polymer, the latter giving rise to NIR emission with a maximum at 731 nm and an appreciable quantum yield of 7 %. Electrochemical and computational studies reveal efficient delocalization of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) along the pyridyl-anthracene-pyridyl axis, which results in effective electronic communication between BDPA units, selectively lowers the LUMO, and ultimately narrows the band gap. Time-resolved emission and transient absorption (TA) measurements offer insights into the pertinent photophysical processes. Extension of π-conjugation also slows down the self-sensitized formation of endoperoxides, while significantly accelerating the thermal release of singlet oxygen to regenerate the parent acenes.

Abstract
Covering an exceptionally wide range of bond strengths, the dynamic nature and facile tunability of dative B-N bonds is highly attractive when it comes to the assembly of supramolecular polymers and materials. This Minireview offers an overview of advances in the development of functional materials where Lewis pairs (LPs) play a key role in their assembly and critically influence their properties. Specifically, we describe the reversible assembly of linear polymers with interesting optical, electronic and catalytic properties, discrete macrocycles and molecular cages that take up diverse guest molecules and undergo structural changes triggered by external stimuli, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with intriguing interlocked structures that can embed and separate gases such as CO2 and acetylene, and soft polymer networks that serve as recyclable, self-healing, and responsive thermosets, gels and elastomeric materials.

Abstract
Boron-functionalized polymers are used in opto-electronics, biology, and medicine. Methods to produce boron-functionalized and degradable polyesters remain exceedingly rare but relevant where (bio)dissipation is required, for example, in self-assembled nanostructures, dynamic polymer networks, and bio-imaging. Here, a boronic ester-phthalic anhydride and various epoxides (cyclohexene oxide, vinyl-cyclohexene oxide, propene oxide, allyl glycidyl ether) undergo controlled ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP), catalyzed by organometallic complexes [Zn(II)Mg(II) or Al(III)K(I)] or a phosphazene organobase. The polymerizations are well controlled allowing for the modulation of the polyester structures (e.g., by epoxide selection, AB, or ABA blocks), molar masses (9.4 < Mn < 40 kg/mol), and uptake of boron functionalities (esters, acids, "ates", boroxines, and fluorescent groups) in the polymer. The boronic ester-functionalized polymers are amorphous, with high glass transition temperatures (81 < Tg < 224 °C) and good thermal stability (285 < Td < 322 °C). The boronic ester-polyesters are deprotected to yield boronic acid- and borate-polyesters; the ionic polymers are water soluble and degradable under alkaline conditions. Using a hydrophilic macro-initiator in alternating epoxide/anhydride ROCOP, and lactone ring opening polymerization, produces amphiphilic AB and ABC copolyesters. Alternatively, the boron-functionalities are subjected to Pd(II)-catalyzed cross-couplings to install fluorescent groups (BODIPY). The utility of this new monomer as a platform to construct specialized polyesters materials is exemplified here in the synthesis of fluorescent spherical nanoparticles that self-assemble in water (Dh = 40 nm). The selective copolymerization, variable structural composition, and adjustable boron loading represent a versatile technology for future explorations of degradable, well-defined, and functional polymers.

Abstract
C-B bond forming reactions are important methodologies in modern synthetic chemistry, since many borylated organic substrates, ranging from alkanes and alkenes to arenes and heteroarenes, are useful intermediates for the synthesis of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and organic π-conjugated materials. Among numerous borylation methods, C-Si/B-Br exchange reactions have attracted increasing attention in recent years. While experimental exploration has been continually carried out for more than two decades, mechanistic insights into this type of reaction have not yet been clearly established. To address this deficiency of knowledge, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to map out the reaction pathways for a range of boron-silicon exchange reactions between boron tribromide (BBr3) and trimethylsilyl-substituted arenes (TMSAr). Our computational analyses have disclosed the energetic, structural, and electronic properties for key stationary points on the potential energy surfaces (PES) in both the gas and solution (CH2Cl2) phases.

Abstract
The bonding situation in the tricoordinated beryllium phenyl complexes [BePh3 ]- , [(pyridine)BePh2 ] and [(trimethylsilyl-N-heterocyclic imine)BePh2 ] is investigated experimentally and computationally. Comparison of the NMR spectroscopic properties of these complexes and of their structural parameters, which were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, indicates the presence of π-interactions. Topology analysis of the electron density reveals elliptical electron density distributions at the bond critical points and the double bond character of the beryllium-element bonds is verified by energy decomposition analysis with the combination of natural orbital for chemical valence. The present beryllium-element bonds are highly polarized and the ligands around the central atom have a strong influence on the degree of π-delocalization. These results are compared to related triarylboranes.

Abstract
Main-chain boron-containing π-conjugated polymers are attractive for organic electronic, sensing, and imaging applications. Alternating terthiophene-borane polymers were prepared and the effects of regioisomeric attachment of the conjugated linker and variations in the electronic effect of the pendent aryl groups (2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl, Mes*; 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl, FMes) examined. Pd2 dba3 /P(t-Bu)3 -catalyzed Stille polymerization of arylbis(2-thienyl)borane and arylbis(3-thienylborane) with 2,5-bis(trimethylstannyl)thiophene at 120 °C gave polymers with appreciable molecular weight but MALDI-TOF MS analyses showed evidence of unusually prominent homocoupling. These defects could be suppressed by using brominated rather than iodinated monomers, more hindered 2,5-bis(tri-n-butylstannyl)thiophene as comonomer, and Pd2 dba3 /P(o-tol)3 as the catalyst at 100 °C. Under these conditions, macrocyclic species with n=3-10 repeating units formed preferentially according to MALDI-TOF MS analyses. Photophysical studies revealed a prominent effect of the regiochemistry and the nature of the pendent aryl groups on the absorption and emission, giving rise to orange, yellow-green, blue-green, and blue emissive materials respectively. The electronic effects were rationalized through DFT calculations on bis(terthiophene) model systems.

Abstract
Ultralong afterglow emissions due to room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of paramount importance in the advancement of smart sensors, bioimaging and light-emitting devices. We herein present an efficient approach to achieve rarely accessible phosphorescence of heavy atom-free organoboranes via photochemical switching of sterically tunable fluorescent Lewis pairs (LPs). LPs are widely applied in and well-known for their outstanding performance in catalysis and supramolecular soft materials but have not thus far been exploited to develop photo-responsive RTP materials. The intramolecular LP M1BNM not only shows a dynamic response to thermal treatment due to reversible N→B coordination but crystals of M1BNM also undergo rapid photochromic switching. As a result, unusual emission switching from short-lived fluorescence to long-lived phosphorescence (rad-M1BNM, τRTP =232 ms) is observed. The reported discoveries in the field of Lewis pairs chemistry offer important insights into their structural dynamics, while also pointing to new opportunities for photoactive materials with implications for fast responsive detectors.

Abstract
On the basis of aminoethers of boric acid (AEBA), polyurethane vapor-permeable and pervaporative membranes were obtained. AEBAs, the structure of which is modified by bulk adducts (EM) of diphenylol propane diglycidyl ether and ethanolamine, were studied. It turned out that AEBA exists in the form of clusters, and the use of EM as a result of partial destruction of associative interactions leads to a significant decrease in the size of AEBA-EM particles and their viscosity compared to unmodified AEBA. The introduction of EM into the composition of AEBA leads to a threefold increase in the vapor permeability of polyurethanes obtained on their basis. The observed effect is explained by the fact that a decrease in the size of clusters leads to loosening of their dense packing. Areas of clustering due to associative interactions of hydroxyl groups, together with the hydrophilic nature of polyoxyethylene glycol, create channels through which water molecules can penetrate. The increase in vapor permeability is accompanied by a multiple increase in the permeability coefficients in the pervaporative dehydration of isopropanol.

Abstract
Ansa-ferrocenes with pyrazabole bridges are chemically robust entities and therefore suitable building blocks for the synthesis of rigid-rod polymers that combine redox-active Fe(II) centers and beltene-like faces. The specific monomers we developed bear OEt groups at both tetracoordinated boron atoms (for solubility reasons) and ethynyl substituents at the 4-positions of the two pyrazole rings. Polymerization was accomplished by a condensation reaction with 1,4-diiodobenzene using a Sonogashira-Hagihara-type protocol. Thereby, oligomers with a number-average molecular weight of Mn = 7.6 kDa and dispersity of Ð = 1.55 were obtained, suggesting an average chain length of about 14 repeating units based on gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis in THF relative to narrow polystyrene standards. The molecular-weight determination was complemented by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and (heteronuclear) NMR spectroscopy to verify the intact pyrazabole monomer repeat units and the nature of the end-groups. The oligomers were further characterized by UV−vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, which demonstrated the successful synthesis of a new class of redox-active materials.

Abstract
Tuning diradical character is an important topic for organic diradicaloids. Herein, we report the precise borylation enabling structural isomerism as an effective strategy to modulate diradical character and thereby properties of organic diradicaloids. We synthesized a new B-containing polycyclic hydrocarbon that has the indeno[1,2-b]fluorene π-skeleton with the β-carbons bonding to two boron atoms. Detailed theoretical and experimental results show that this bonding pattern leads to its distinctive electronic structures and properties in comparison to that of its isomeric molecule. This molecule has the efficient conjugation between boron atoms and π-skeleton, resulting in downshifted LUMO and HOMO levels. Moreover, it exhibits smaller diradical character and thereby inhibited diradical properties, such as significantly blue-shifted light absorption, larger energy bandgap and weak para-magnetic resonance. Notably, this B-containing polycyclic hydrocarbon possesses much stronger Lewis acidity and its Lewis acid-base adducts display enhanced diradical character, demonstrating the positive effects of Lewis coordination on modulating diradical performance.

Abstract
Boron-containing organic compounds are well accepted as a class of compounds having excellent photophysical properties. In addition to the unique photophysical properties, the ease of synthesis and structural robustness make tetracoordinate boron complexes ideal for a variety of applications. While significant light has been thrown on their luminescence properties, there is no collective attention to their supramolecular chemistry. In this mini review, we discuss the progress made in the supramolecular chemistry of these compounds which includes their utility as building blocks for liquid crystalline materials and gels largely driven by various non-covalent interactions like H-bonding, CH-π interactions, BF-π interactions and Van der Waals forces. The organoboron compounds presented here are prepared from easy-to-synthesize chelating units such as imines, diiminates, ketoiminates and diketonates. Moreover, the presence of heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, and the presence of aromatic rings facilitate non-covalent interactions which not only favor their formation but also helps to stabilize the self-assembled structures.

Abstract
The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviors of carborane-based hybrid emitters have been extensively reported, while their combinations with the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are still scarce. We designed and synthesized three Janus carboranes (the chemical structures resemble the double-faced god, Janus) Cb-1/2/3 with different carbazole moieties. All of the Janus carboranes exhibited quenched emission in solution with ΦPL (quantum efficiency of photoluminescence (PL)) lower than 0.01. The PL performance was improved by proceeding to the aggregates in THF/water (ΦPL 0.17-0.35) and further improved in the crystals or solid with ΦPL up to 0.99 for Cb-1, 0.85 for Cb-2, and 0.61 for Cb-3, which agreed with the AIE enhancement. Although the PL of solid Cb-1/2/3 showed non-TADF properties with lifetimes only at several nanoseconds, the crystallographic studies have shown a root cause of π···π stacking that quenched the TADF, and the theoretical calculations forecasted small singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔES-T) therein. According to these findings, TADF was recovered in Cb-1/2/3 by doping into 1,3-bis(carbazol-9-yl)benzene (mCP). The 10 wt % doped films of Cb-1/2/3 have achieved a trade-off of ΦPL (0.84 in Cb-3 and 0.83 in Cb-1) and delayed lifetime (up to 8 μs). The doped devices of organic light-emitting diodes incorporating Cb-1/2/3 achieved the highest external quantum efficiency at 10.1% and the maximized luminance of 5920 cd/m2 at a driving voltage of 8 V.

Abstract
The preparation and photophysical properties of two heavier main group element analogues of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophores are described. Specifically, we have prepared dipyrrin complexes of dichlorogallate (GADIPY) or phenylphosphenium (PHODIPY) units. Whereas cationic PHODIPY is labile, decomposing to a phosphine over time, GADIPY is readily prepared in good yield as a crystalline solid having moderate air- and water-stability. Crystallographically characterized GADIPY displays intense green photoluminescence (λem = 505 nm, Φem = 0.91 in toluene). These inaugural heavier main group element analogues of BODIPY offer a glimpse into the potential for elaboration to a panoply of chromophores with diverse photophysical properties.

Abstract
A recent report illustrated superior optical properties, such as near-infrared emission, of polymers connected at the 4,4'-positions to a fused azobenzene-boron complex (BAz). In this study, it is initially demonstrated that further narrowing of the band gap can be realized through the substituent effect with bromine groups at the 5,5'-positions of BAz compared with those at the 4,4'-positions. From a series of mechanistic studies, perturbation of the energy levels was rationally explained by the difference in contributions of the inductive effect and the variable resonance effect, which was correlated with the degree of electron distribution of molecular orbitals at the substituent positions. Moreover, it was found that unique electronic states, such as delocalized HOMOs and LUMOs, should appear on the main chains of the BAz-containing copolymers with fluorene and bithiophene units, according to the optical and electrochemical data and theoretical calculations. By taking advantage of property tunability and the dramatically low LUMO energy level (near -4.0 eV) of the BAz unit, it can be said that BAz should be a conjugated building block favorable for building advanced optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
A novel thiophene-bridged donor-acceptor system was synthesized with a carbazole as donor and a borole as acceptor unit. The borole group was successfully installed via the tin-boron exchange reaction of 1,1-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylstannole with 9-(5-(dibromoboryl)thiophen-2-yl)carbazole. The effect of the borole on the optoelectronic properties of the donor-acceptor system was explored by spectroscopic (UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy), electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) and theoretical (TD-DFT) methods as well as by modifying its structure. The corresponding donor-acceptor compound bearing the widely employed dimesitylboryl acceptor group was also synthesized for comparison.

Abstract
Although living polymerization methods are widely applicable to organic monomers, their application to inorganic monomers is rare. For the first time, we show that the living poly(methylenephosphine) (PMPn - ) anion can function as a macroinitiator for olefins. Specifically, the phosphaalkene, MesP=CPh2 (PA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) can be sequentially copolymerized using the BnLi-TMEDA initiator system in toluene. A series of PMPn -b-PMMAm copolymers with narrow dispersities are accessible (Đ=1.05-1.10). Analysis of the block copolymers provided evidence for -P-CPh2 -CH2 -CMe(CO2 Me)- switching groups. Importantly, this indicates that the -P-CPh2 - anion directly initiates the anionic polymerization of MMA and stands in stark contrast to the isomerization mechanism followed for the homopolymerization of PA. For the first time, the glass transition of a PMPn homopolymer has been measured (Tg =45.1 °C, n=20). The PMPn -b-PMMAm copolymers do not phase separate and show a single Tg which increases with higher PMMA content.

Abstract
A new B-N functionalized polyaromatic building block for conjugated hybrid polymers is developed. Bromine-functionalized dipyridylfluorene is first subjected to Lewis-base-directed electrophilic borylation and subsequently incorporated into conjugated polymers via transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The borane monomer exhibits bright blue luminescence in solution, as a result of the rigid ladder-type structure generated upon electrophilic borylation. Yamamoto coupling gives rise to a homopolymer and Stille coupling to a vinylene-bridged copolymer. Polymerization of the BN-fused ladder molecules leads to large bathochromic shifts in absorption and emission, which are most pronounced for the vinylene-bridged copolymer. The polymers display strong luminescence in solution with quantum yields of 55% and 78% and sub-ns fluorescence lifetimes; the copolymer also exhibits bright yellow luminescence in the solid state when precipitated from solution.

Abstract
The application of our newly developed B-C coupling method by catalytic Si/B exchange is demonstrated for the synthesis of a series of triarylboranes (1), monodisperse thienyl- and furylborane dimers (2) and trimers (9), extended oligomers (3) and polymers (3'), as well as mixed (oligo)thienyl-/furylboranes. The structures of 1 aaTip , 1 bbTip , and 2 bbbMes* , determined by X-ray crystallography, reveal largely coplanar hetarene rings and BR3 environments, which are most pronounced in the furylborane species. Photophysical investigations, supported by TD-DFT calculations, revealed pronounced π-electron delocalization over the hetarene backbones including the boron centers. With an extended series of derivatives of varying chain lengths available, we were able to determine the effective conjugation lengths (ECL) of poly(thienylborane)s and poly(furylborane)s, which have been reached with the highest-molecular-weight derivatives of our study. Through variation of the furan-to-thiophene ratio, the photophysical properties of these materials are effectively modulated. Significantly, higher furan contents lead to considerably increased fluorescence intensities. Compounds 1 aaTip , 1 bbTip , and 3 aTip showed the ability to bind fluoride anions. The binding process is signaled by a distinct change in their optical absorption characteristics, thus rendering these materials attractive targets for sensory applications.

Abstract
We disclose a novel strategy to design n-type acenes through the introduction of boron-nitrogen coordination bonds (B←N). We synthesized two azaacenes composed of two B←N units and six/eight linearly annelated rings. The B←N unit significantly perturbed the electronic structures of the azaacenes: Unique LUMOs delocalized over the entire acene skeletons and decreased aromaticity of the B←N-adjacent rings. Most importantly, these B←N-containing azaacenes exhibited low-lying LUMO energy levels and high electron affinities, thus leading to n-type character. The solution-processed organic field-effect transistor based on one such azaacene exhibited unipolar n-type characteristics with an electron mobility of 0.21 cm2 V-1 s-1 .
