Abstract
Importance Multicomponent electronic patient-reported outcome cancer symptom management systems reduce symptom burden. Whether all components contribute to symptom reduction is unknown. Objective To deconstruct intervention components of the Symptom Care at Home (SCH) system, a digital symptom monitoring and management intervention that has demonstrated efficacy, to determine which component or combination of components results in the lowest symptom burden. Design, Setting, and Participants This randomized clinical trial included participants who were older than 18 years, had been diagnosed with cancer, had a life expectancy of 3 months or greater, were beginning a chemotherapy course planned for at least 3 cycles, spoke English, and had daily access and ability to use a telephone. Eligible participants were identified from the Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah (Salt Lake City), and from Emory University Winship Cancer Institute, including Grady Memorial Hospital (Atlanta, Georgia), from August 7, 2017, to January 17, 2020. Patients receiving concurrent radiation therapy were excluded. Dates of analysis were from February 1, 2020, to December 22, 2023. Interventions Participants reported symptoms daily during a course of chemotherapy and received automated self-management coaching with an activity tracker without (group 1) and with (group 2) visualization, nurse practitioner (NP) follow-up for moderate-to-severe symptoms without (group 3) and with (group 4) decision support, or the complete SCH intervention (group 5). Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome, symptom burden, was assessed as the summed severity of 11 chemotherapy-related symptoms rated on a scale of 1 to 10 (with higher scores indicating greater severity), if present. Results The 757 participants (mean [SD] age, 59.2 [12.9] years) from 2 cancer centers were primarily female (61.2%). The most common cancer diagnoses were breast (132 [17.4%]), lung (107 [14.1%]), and colorectal (99 [13.1%]) cancers; 369 patients (48.7%) had metastatic disease. The complete SCH intervention including automated self-management coaching and NP follow-up with decision support (group 5) was superior in reducing symptom burden to either of the self-management coaching groups, as shown by the mean group differences in area under the curve (group 1, 1.86 [95% CI, 1.30-2.41] and group 2, 2.38 [95% CI, 1.84-2.92]; both P < .001), and to either of the NP follow-up groups (group 3, 0.57 [95% CI, 0.03-1.11]; P =.04; and group 4, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.14-1.19]; P = .014). Additionally, NP follow-up was superior to self-management coaching (group 1 vs group 3, 1.29 [95% CI, 0.72-1.86]; group 1 vs group 4, 1.20 [95% 12 CI, 0.64-1.76]; group 2 vs group 3, 1.81 [95% CI, 1.25-2.37]; and group 2 vs group 4, 1.72 [95% CI, 1.17-2.26]; all P < .001), but there was no difference between the 2 self-management coaching groups (-0.52 [95% CI, -1.09 to 0.05]; P = .07) or between the 2 NP groups (-0.10 [95% CI, -0.65 to 0.46]; P = .74). Conclusions and Relevance In this randomized clinical trial of adult participants undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer, the complete intervention, rather than any individual component of the SCH system, achieved the greatest symptom burden reduction. These findings suggest that a multicomponent digital approach to cancer symptom management may offer optimal symptom burden reduction. Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02779725.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which religious-psychological factors contribute to self-perceived sport performance among religious athletes. METHODS The participants consisted of 612 athletes (310 males, 302 females) aged 12-70 years (mean age = 25.33; SD = 8.99) who were competing in sport competitions at the time, either individually or in a team, or both, and who had formally registered in local, regional, or national sport federations in Malaysia. They completed the Athletic Religious Faith Scale (ARFS) and a self-perceived sport performance questionnaire. RESULTS The results showed that religious-psychological factors explain around 21% of the variance in self-perceived sport performance among religious athletes. Only three religious-psychological factors (i.e., religious coping, athletic identity, and religious dietary practices) contributed to the stimulation of self-perceived sport performance; in particular, religious coping was the most predictable factor, whereas the other factors (i.e., dependence on faith, flow, religious mental healing, and religious psychological effects) had no meaningful relationship with self-perceived sport performance. CONCLUSIONS This finding suggests that sport psychologists, coaches, and other professionals should consider the importance of religious faith and help religious athletes practice positive religious coping (e.g., religious social support or religious meditation) to enhance athletes' well-being and athletic performance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Symptoms during cancer treatment cause burden, diminished physical functioning, and poor quality of life. Exercise is recommended during treatment to mitigate symptoms; however, interventions are difficult to translate into clinical care due to the lack of patient uptake and clinical implementation barriers. We evaluated the uptake, acceptability, and impact of an automated ePRO exercise module triggered by three patient-reported symptoms: nausea/vomiting, fatigue, and anxiety, during chemotherapy. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis of an exercise module intervention imbedded in the cancer symptom monitoring and management platform, Symptom Care at Home (SCH). Utilizing behavioral economics principles, the exercise module was triggered when any of the three symptoms were reported. Once triggered, participants were coached on exercise benefits for symptom reduction and then offered the opportunity to set weekly exercise goals plus tracking of the goal outcomes and receive further encouragement. We examined uptake, exercise goal setting and attainment, and symptom impact. RESULTS Of 180 SCH participants receiving the SCH intervention, 170 (94.4%) triggered the exercise module and 102 of the 170 (60%) accepted the module, setting goals on average for 6.3 weeks. Of 102 participants, 82 (80.4%) achieved one or more exercise goals, exercising on average 79.8 min/week. Participants who achieved a higher proportion of goals had statistically significant lower overall symptom severity and lower severity of the triggered symptom. CONCLUSION An automated mHealth exercise coaching intervention, aimed to nudge those receiving chemotherapy to initiate an exercise routine had significant uptake, is acceptable and may reduce symptom severity. Abstract
BACKGROUND Phone calls and videoconferences are the most widely used systems to interact with patients in real time. Patient care through phone calls or videoconferences is different from an in-person meeting. Interpersonal communication skills, self-confidence communication skills and empathy with the patient may be affected during phone calls or videoconferences. AIM The objective of this study was to describe the interpersonal communication skills, self-confidence communication skills and empathy of nursing students during patient care through phone calls or videoconferences. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS A total of 170 nursing students participated from the University of Almeria. The subjects were randomly assigned to the phone call group or videoconference group. METHODS The students contacted standardised patients through phone calls or videoconferences. Questionnaires were used to assess interpersonal communication skills with patient, empathy, and self-confidence in communication skills. Data collection was carried out between March and May 2022. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were found between self-confidence in communication skills with the patient and the type of consultation, nor were statistically significant differences found between the empathy of the nursing students and the type of consultation. The students who used videoconference reported higher patient interpersonal communication skills than the students who made phone calls. Finally, the participants who made videoconferences obtained a higher score in dimension therapeutic use of self than those who made phone calls. CONCLUSIONS Nursing students have shown a high level of empathy and interpersonal communication skills with patients and a moderate level of self-confidence in communication skills, both when interacting with patients through phone calls and videoconferences. Finally, differences were found in interpersonal communication skills with patient and type of consultation. In particular, interpersonal communication skills with the patient are greater when the nursing students make a videoconference.

Abstract
Job stress is pervasive in today's workforce and has negative implications for employees' mental and physical well-being and job performance. Recovery activities outside of work can reduce strain and improve work outcomes; however, little is known about pleasurable intimate recovery experiences and their influence on work outcomes, even though these experiences are important parts of most people's lives outside of work. The present study examined sexual activity that is shared either with a relationship partner or oneself (masturbation) and how pleasure specifically predicts well-being and work outcomes to induce recovery. Results suggest that pleasurable sexual activity, with a partner or alone, is related to perceived recovery from work stress, job satisfaction, work engagement, and life satisfaction. Moreover, perceived recovery from work mediated the relationship between pleasurable sex and work outcomes. Gender moderated this relationship such that pleasurable sex was a stronger predictor of recovery for women (compared to men) in the context of sex within committed relationship partners (but not masturbation). Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the injury prevalence, injury pattern, and potential baseline risk factors for injuries in male and female adolescent and adult amateur football players. METHODS This prospective study followed adolescent and adult amateur football players over one season March-October 2020. The study was completed by 462 players (130 men, age 20.0 ± 5.7, 14-46 years) who answered a baseline survey and a weekly web survey during the season. A total of 1456 weekly surveys were registered from males and 5041 from females. Injuries were recorded with the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center Overuse Injury Questionnaire (OSTRC-O2). Potential baseline risk factors (age, performance of strength/conditioning training, participation in other sports, perceived importance of sporting success, self-rated training and match load, perceived balance between training/match load and recovery, previous/present injury at start of season, and injury beliefs) and their association with injury were analysed with Poisson regressions within each sex. RESULTS Males reported 95 injuries (262 injury weeks, weekly prevalence 18.0% (95% CI 16.1-20.1)) and females 350 injuries (1206 injury weeks, weekly prevalence 23.9% (95% CI 22.8-25.1)). Gradual-onset injuries accounted for 57% of the injuries in males and 66% in females. For males, substantial injuries were most common in the hip/groin (weekly prevalence 3.8%), ankle (2.1%), posterior thigh (2.0%), and knee (2.0%); and for females, in the knee (4.3%), ankle (2.5%), and lower leg/Achilles tendon (2.0%). Significant risk factors for injury were higher age (rate ratio males 1.05 per year increase (95% CI 1.02-1.08), females 1.03 (95% CI 1.01-1.05)), and present injury at baseline (males 1.92 (95% CI 1.27-2.89), females 1.58 (95% CI 1.19-2.09)). CONCLUSION At any given week, almost one in five male and one in four female amateur football players reported new or ongoing injuries. Hip/groin injuries were more frequent in males, while female players had a higher prevalence of knee injuries. Older players and those with an existing injury at the start of the season were more prone to new injury during the season. Rehabilitation of pre-season injury and complaints are key to reduce the injury burden in amateur football. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level II. Trial registration number NCT04272047, Clinical trials.

Abstract
With the increasing use of technology, different psychological effects of social media emerge. These psychological effects can be negative as well as positive, and in general psychological well-being and different psychological variables related to social media can affect the daily life of individuals. Also, new constructs associated with social media, such as anonymity, have begun to show up as people seek protection of their identities online. This study aims to determine the moderating role of anonymity in the relationship between FoMO and psychological well-being. The sample of this study consisted of 232 participants (69.8% female) between the ages of 18-59. Two different scales were used in this study: Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Psychological Well-being. In addition, to measure anonymity, participants were asked a single question about whether they use anonymous accounts on social media. The analysis of the study found a positive and significant relationship between FoMO and anonymity as well as a negative and significant relationship between psychological well-being and anonymity. Moreover, the results indicated that anonymity moderated the relationship between FoMO and psychological well-being. That is, FoMO was negatively associated with psychological well-being for individuals with anonymous accounts, while there was no significant relationship between FoMO and psychological well-being for those without anonymous accounts. The limitations and contributions of the study were discussed in line with the relevant literature and suggestions for future research were presented.

Abstract
Ample research has shown that light influences our emotions, cognition, and sleep quality. However, little work has examined whether different light exposure-related behaviors, such as daytime exposure to electric light and nighttime usage of gadgets, especially before sleep, influence sleep quality and cognition. Three-hundred-and-one Malaysian adults (MeanAge±SD = 28 ± 9) completed the Light Exposure Behavior Assessment tool that measured five light exposure behaviors. They also completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and single items assessing trouble in memory and concentration. A partial least square structural equation model, showing 72.72% predictive power, revealed that less use of wearable blue filters outdoors during the day and more within one hour before sleep predicted early peak time (direct effect = -0.25). Increased time spent outdoors predicted a positive affect (direct effect = 0.33) and a circadian phase advancement (direct effect: rising time = 0.14, peak time = 0.20, retiring time = 0.17). Increased use of mobile phone before sleep predicted a circadian phase delay (direct effect: retiring time = -0.25; rising time = -0.23; peak time = -0.22; morning affect = -0.12), reduced sleep quality (direct effect = 0.13), and increased trouble in memory and concentration (total effect = 0.20 and 0.23, respectively). Increased use of tunable, LED, or dawn-simulating electric light in the morning and daytime predicted a circadian phase advancement (direct effect: peak time = 0.15, morning affect = 0.14, retiring time = 0.15) and good sleep quality (direct effect = -0.16). The results provide valuable insights into developing a healthy light diet to promote health and wellness.

Abstract
CONTEXT Caregivers managing symptoms of family members with cancer during home hospice care, often feel ill-prepared and need patient care coaching. OBJECTIVES This study tested the efficacy of an automated mHealth platform that included caregiver coaching on patient symptom care and nurse notifications of poorly controlled symptoms. The primary outcome was caregiver perception of patients' overall symptom severity throughout hospice care and at weeks one, two, four, and eight. Secondary outcomes compared individual symptom severity. METHODS Caregivers (n = 298) were randomly assigned to the Symptom Care at Home (SCH) intervention (n = 144) or usual hospice care (UC) (n = 154). All caregivers placed daily calls to the automated system that assessed the presence and severity of 11 end-of-life patient physical and psychosocial symptoms. SCH caregivers received automated coaching on symptom care based on reported patient symptoms and their severity. Moderate-to-severe symptoms were also relayed to the hospice nurse. RESULTS The SCH intervention produced a mean overall symptom reduction benefit, over UC, of 4.89 severity points (95% CI 2.86-6.92) (P < 0.001), with a moderate effect size (d = 0.55). The SCH benefit also occurred at each timepoint (P < 0.001- 0.020). There was a 38% reduction in days reporting moderate-to-severe patient symptoms compared to UC (P < 0.001) with 10/11 symptoms significantly reduced in SCH compared to UC. CONCLUSION Automated mHealth symptom reporting by caregivers, paired with tailored caregiver coaching on symptom management and nurse notifications, reduces cancer patients' physical and psychosocial symptoms during home hospice, providing a novel and efficient approach to improving end-of-life care.

Abstract
Fatigue is a common experience in everyday life. People who experience fatigue will have more intense negative emotions, and at the same time, their positive emotions will decrease, impairing the individual's emotional processing ability. In previous research, mindfulness meditation reduces the intensity of negative emotional stimuli. However, if individuals continue to be affected by negative emotions when they are fatigued, it is unclear whether mindfulness can buffer the negative association between fatigue and emotions. This study examined whether mindfulness meditation affects the association between fatigue and emotions, using event-related potentials (ERPs). One hundred and forty-five participants completed the experiment. They were randomly assigned to the Mindfulness or Non-mindfulness group; and they were presented with positive, neutral, or negative pictures in an emotional processing task before and after mindfulness or rest. Late positive potential (LPP) is an important indicator of emotional stimuli perceived by individuals, and positive or negative pictures can induce an increase in LPP amplitude more than neutral pictures. Our findings suggest that fatigue significantly affected individuals' LPP amplitudes in the early, mid, and late windows in the Non-mindfulness group, specifically, the more fatigued individuals had lower LPP amplitudes, but not in the Mindfulness group. These results suggest that in a state of fatigue, mindful individuals are able to maintain responsiveness to emotional stimuli by maintaining LPP amplitude. Our study has demonstrated that mindfulness meditation, to some extent, offsets the negative association of fatigue with the neural activation of emotions.

Abstract
Insomnia has been frequently reported as one of the most burdensome symptoms among cancer survivors. To date, little research exists on strategies to effectively reduce insomnia in cancer survivors, especially in the application of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) at the bedside by nurses. The current objective is to determine efficacy and durability of a streamlined, individually delivered version of CBTI, specifically Brief Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (BBTI) versus a healthy eating attention control, using a large heterogeneous sample of 158 cancer survivors. Study participants will be adults ≥18 years of age; ≥1 month from treatment (except hormones and targeted therapies are acceptable) for stages I through III breast, colorectal, lung or prostate cancers; meet criteria for insomnia defined by Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) >7; screen negative for obstructive sleep apnea <15 events/h; and ability to complete data collection instruments in English. Baseline, and then 1-, 3-, and 12-month objective (i.e., actigraphy) and subjective sleep, mood, and quality of life assessments after the interventions are planned. The primary outcome will be measured with the ISI, a psychometrically-sound instrument used to measure perceived insomnia severity. The results of this trial will demonstrate the application of BBTI in a larger heterogenous sample of cancer survivors for the first time and may lead to implementation strategies that will promote the dissemination and sustainability of this intervention. Abstract
Families of pediatric solid organ transplant recipients need ongoing education and support in the first 30 days following hospital discharge for the transplantation. The purpose of this report is to describe the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a mHealth family-self management intervention, (myFAMI), designed to improve post-discharge outcomes of coping, family quality of life, self-efficacy, family self-management, and utilization of health care resources. We enrolled 46 primary family members. myFAMI was feasible and acceptable; 81% (n=17/21) of family members completed the app at least 24/30 days (goal 80% completion rate). Family members generated 134 trigger alerts and received a nurse response within the goal timeframe of < 2 h 99% of the time. Although there were no significant differences between groups, primary outcomes were in the expected direction. The intervention was well received and is feasible for future post-discharge interventions for families of children who receive an organ transplant.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Internet-based interventions (IBIs) to treat psychological disorders are available, but accessibility to these to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young adult populations is quite limited. The current study examined the feasibility of a proposed IBI for ADHD and participant perceptions regarding treatment acceptability and credibility, and outcome expectancy. Participants (N = 235; aged 18-35) with a prior ADHD diagnosis were recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and were provided with a proposed IBI and explanatory outlines of treatment module content. Participants in the cross-sectional study were randomly assigned to either a tailored (i.e., targeted content modules), minimal (i.e., presented overall fewer and non-targeted modules), or full (i.e., all possible modules) condition. Results demonstrated moderate IBI acceptability among participants in the tailored and full conditions. The majority of participants preferred IBI over face-to-face (F2F) treatment, and most individuals who preferred F2F treatment also considered an IBI to be an acceptable treatment modality. Lack of significant mean differences between the tailored and full conditions on several of the main outcomes of interest (e.g., perceptions of acceptability) suggests that implementation of either method of treatment could prove effective. Differences based on treatment length and relevance, and biological sex were also explored. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed. Abstract
This paper discusses the connections between nursing conceptual model concepts, middle-range theory, and situation-specific theory concepts, as well as between the theory concepts and how they are measured, that is, empirical indicators. Three types of empirical indicators are described—instruments, assessment tools, and interventions—and an example of each type is given. The paper’s central thesis is that a conceptual model concept is —or should be— the starting point for selecting or constructing an empirical indicator.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Authentic leadership has been consistently cited as a strong precursor of sustained job performance and work effectiveness in nurses; however, studies linking authentic leadership with nurses' safety actions, nurse-assessed adverse patient events and nursing care quality are scarce. AIM To examine whether nurses' safety actions mediate the relationship between authentic leadership, nurse-assessed adverse events and nursing care quality. METHODS A multi-centre, cross-sectional study involving 1,608 nurses employed in acute care facilities in Oman. Multi-stage regression analysis was conducted in testing for the mediation model. FINDINGS Nurse managers in Oman were perceived to be highly authentic by their staff nurses. Authentic leadership significantly predicted nurses' safety actions (β = 0.168, p < .001), decrease in nurse-assessed adverse events (β = -0.017, p = .024) and increase in care quality (β = 0.121, p < .001). Further, the association between authentic leadership and nurse-assessed adverse events (β = -0.063, p = .057) and care quality (β = 0.038, p = .002) was mediated by nurses' safety actions. CONCLUSION Results suggest the importance of developing nurse managers' authentic leadership to foster nurses' safety actions and reduce adverse patient outcomes and promote nursing care quality. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Organizational efforts to address patient safety issues should be directed towards developing authentic leadership in nurse managers through leadership programmes, periodic evaluation of leadership competencies (e.g., 360-degree or a bottom-up performance evaluation), and a creation of a safe culture in which nurses can openly report safety concerns for corrective action.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hispanics have the highest birth rate among adolescents and may be vulnerable to experience depression. The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of perinatal depression and effects upon neonatal outcomes among Hispanic adolescents 13-19 years old. METHODS Available data from a previously conducted study examining the prevalence of adolescent depression and post-traumatic stress were used for the current secondary analysis. Perinatal data reflected a rating of prenatal depression and scores from the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS). Adverse infant outcomes included preterm birth, low birth weight, and neonatal complications. RESULTS Over 20% of adolescents reported an adverse infant outcome. About one third of adolescents reported perinatal depression: prenatally (14%) and postnatally (14% minor depression/12.7% major depression). Significant associations were found between EPDS scores, gestational age, and feelings during pregnancy; however, perinatal depression was not found to predict adverse infant outcomes. CONCLUSION Prenatally depressed adolescents are vulnerable to postpartum depression and if experience an adverse infant outcome, postpartum depression may be more likely reported. Therefore, prenatal- and afterbirth-focused assessments and care, including plans for follow-up, are essential.

Abstract
As a form of experiential education, service learning (SL) shows great potential for promoting students' knowledge transfer as it offers students opportunities to apply what they have learned in classrooms to serve communities in real-life contexts. To explore how students' knowledge transfer evolves during SL, we collected longitudinal survey data from 96 Chinese college students in a 9-week SL program. Results indicate that (a) students' perceived knowledge transfer in SL did not follow a linear trajectory. Although students' perceived knowledge transfer at the end of SL was significantly higher than those at the beginning, a slight drop was observed in the middle of SL; (b) the developmental pattern of perceived knowledge transfer varied across students; and (c) students' perceived knowledge transfer development during SL was associated with mastery goal orientation and perceptions of psychologically controlling behaviors from their SL supervisors. Abstract
Recognized risk factors influencing the birth experience and subsequent poor mental health are not addressed among childbearing adolescents, especially minority teens. Our study purpose was to compare birth experiences of three adolescent groups by prevalence and influence of selected risk factors as moderated by racial/ethnic background. Using a birth rating scale and the Impact of Event Scale, birth perception and stress were examined among an equal number of Black, White, and Hispanic adolescents. Surveys completed at 72 hours postpartum showed Black adolescents most at risk for a negative birth experience. Contributing risk factors included depression, trauma, parity, and operative childbirth. Risk factors occur before and after birth; therefore, childbirth educators can promote a positive birth experience via perinatal assessments and interventions.

Abstract
AbstractRecent research has shown that sexual risk behaviours are rising substantially among Italian youth, but this evidence is still undervalued in public discussion. Adopting a multidimensional perspective for sexual risk and addressing gender differences, the present study investigates if and how some individuals’ psychological characteristics—namely body satisfaction, self-esteem and body sensation-seeking—are associated with unsafe and risky sexual behaviours of Italian emerging adults. We exploited the survey SELFY—Sexual and Emotional LiFe of Youths—conducted in 2017 in Italy. Several key points may be highlighted from our study. First, we identify two clusters characterized by high sexual risk-taking behaviours, which include one third of our sample, a non-negligible proportion. Second, we prove that women are generally less inclined to adopt risk-taking behaviours in sexual life. Third, our findings show that body satisfaction, self-esteem and sensation seeking are differently linked to sexual risk taking among women and men. Body satisfaction is associated with a higher probability of adopting risky and promiscuous sexual behaviours among men, while the relationship is not significant among women. Sensation seeking shows a certain relevance in defining sexual risk profiles, especially for men. Overall, our research suggests that body image and self-worth could be relevant areas of intervention for sexual health programs targeting emerging Italian adults. Notably, communication and education strategies on these issues should be differentiated for women and men.

Abstract
Solid-organ transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage organ failure. Parents of pediatric transplant recipients who reported a lack of readiness for discharge had more difficulty coping and managing their child's medically complex care at home. In this paper, we describe the protocol for the pilot study of a mHealth intervention (myFAMI). The myFAMI intervention is based on the Individual and Family Self-Management Theory and focuses on family self-management of pediatric transplant recipients at home. The purpose of the pilot study is to test the feasibility of the myFAMI intervention with family members of pediatric transplant recipients and to test the preliminary efficacy on postdischarge coping through a randomized controlled trial. The sample will include 40 family units, 20 in each arm of the study, from three pediatric transplant centers in the United States. Results from this study may advance nursing science by providing insight for the use of mHealth to facilitate patient/family-nurse communication and family self-management behaviors for family members of pediatric transplant recipients.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to test: (a) the association of political orientations with morality orientations, specified by moral foundations theory, on a sample of young adults from Turkey, representing a collectivistic culture; and (b) the statistically mediating roles of needs for cognition and recognition in the links between political orientation and morality endorsements. According to the results (a) right-wing orientation and need for recognition were associated with all the three binding foundations (i.e., in-group/loyalty, authority/respect, and purity/sanctity); (b) right-wing orientation was associated with binding foundations also indirectly via the role of need for recognition; (c) regarding individualizing foundations, left-wing orientation and need for cognition were associated with fairness/reciprocity, whereas only gender was associated with harm/care; and (d) left-wing orientation was associated with fairness dimension also indirectly via the role of need for cognition. The cultural relevance of moral foundations theory as well as the roles of needs for cognition and recognition are discussed.

Abstract
Objectives: Marginalization-related diminished returns (MDRs) refer to weaker health effects of educational attainment for socially marginalized groups compared to the socially privileged groups. Most of the existing literature on MDRs, however, has focused on marginalization due to race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Thus, very limited information exists on MDRs of educational attainment among immigrant populations in the United States. Aims: Building on the MDRs framework and using a nationally representative sample of US adults, we compared immigrant and native-born adults for the effects of educational attainment on psychological distress, self-rated health (SRH), and chronic diseases (CDs). Methods: The 2015 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) has enrolled 33,672 individuals who were either immigrant (n = 6,225; 18.5%) or native born (n = 27,429; 81.5%). The independent variable (IV) was educational attainment, which was treated as a categorical variable. The dependent variables included psychological distress, SRH, and CDs, all of which were dichotomous variables. Age, gender, race, ethnicity, and region were confounders. Immigration (nativity status) was the moderator. Results: Higher educational attainment was associated with lower odds of psychological distress, poor SRH, and CDs. However, immigration showed a significant statistical interaction with college graduation on all outcomes, which were suggestive of smaller protective effects of college graduation on psychological distress, poor SRH, and CDs for immigrant than native-born adults. Conclusions: In the US, the associations between educational attainment and psychological distress, SRH, and CDs are all weaker for immigrant than native-born adults. To prevent health disparities, it is essential to decompose health inequalities that are due to low educational attainment from those that are due to diminished returns of educational attainment (i.e., MDRs). There is a need to help highly educated immigrant adults secure positive health outcomes, similar to their native-born counterparts. Such changes may require bold and innovative economic, public, and social policies that help immigrant adults to more effectively mobilize their educational attainment to secure tangible outcomes. Elimination of health disparities in the US requires efforts that go beyond equalizing access to education.

Abstract
The clinical environment is a vital component of nurse education, constantly changing due to constraints of the current health care systems such as increasing number of students and a limited number of preceptors. Peer learning, is gaining momentum as an educational model highly suitable for clinical placements. The peer learning model incorporates structured learning activities that support student activity, but little is reported of the actual structure and content of those activities. Thereby, the aim of this study was to explore precepting nurses' experience of using structured learning activities as part of the peer learning model during clinical placement. We used a qualitative research approach, using two open self-administered global questions. The result is based on the analysis of the written responses from 62 preceptors. Four categories followed the analysis: An opportunity for collaboration, An occasion for reflection, A new educational structure, and Recommendations for development. The preceptors perceived the structured learning activities as beneficial for increased collaboration and reflection among students. Moreover, utilizing the structured learning activities was perceived to be time saving for the preceptors, however this is an area where further research is needed.

Abstract
Research exploring American Indian (AI) youth drinking motives and their relation to negative outcomes is critical due to higher rates of alcohol use and early exposure to intoxication in the population. The purpose of this study is to explore classes of drinking motives as they relate to heavy episodic drinking, perceived discrimination, religious importance, ethnic identity, and ethnic pride. This study is part of an ongoing epidemiologic and etiologic investigation of substance use among AI youth drinkers living on or near reservations (n = 1,934, Mage = 15.31). A latent class analysis (LCA) was conducted to discern latent classes of drinking motives. Once latent classes were identified, differences in perceived discrimination, ethnic pride, ethnic identity, religious importance, and heavy episodic drinking were tested. A 2-class solution provided the best overall model fit to the data. The higher coping and enhancement motive class was associated with significantly greater heavy episodic drinking, perceived discrimination, and ethnic identity compared with the low motive class. Further, the class structure did not differ between 7th and 8th graders and 9th-12th graders. Results indicate that among AI youth, the class with strong motives to drink for coping or enhancement had higher ethnic identity, greater risk of heavy episodic drinking, and greater perceived discrimination compared with the class with low motives. Future research should examine additional factors and stressors that may be associated with these classes of drinking motives and are unique to the AI population. Abstract
CONTEXT Symptoms are reported to co-occur during treatment for breast cancer. We previously identified three patterns of fatigue and two patterns of disturbed sleep, depressed mood, and anxiety in women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer using a Latent Growth Mixture Model. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to explore whether membership in symptom classes of fatigue, disturbed sleep, depressed mood, and anxiety is associated with other symptoms at moderate-to-severe levels. METHODS Using data from three longitudinal studies, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests and Jonckheere-Terpstra tests for trend were used to distinguish between classes of women on co-occurring symptoms. Summative scores were calculated, including the number of days subjects reported moderate-to-severe levels (4 or higher on a 0-10 scale) of seven symptoms during two cycles of chemotherapy and compared to class membership. RESULTS Participants (n = 166) in the higher fatigue severity class reported more days with moderate-to-severe disturbed sleep, depressed mood, anxiety, nausea, and trouble thinking. Women in the higher severity disturbed sleep class reported more days with moderate-to-severe fatigue, depressed mood, anxiety, and trouble thinking. Women in the higher depressed mood severity class reported more days with moderate-to-severe fatigue, disturbed sleep, anxiety, and nausea. Women in the higher anxiety severity class reported more days with moderate-to-severe fatigue, disturbed sleep, and depressed mood. CONCLUSION Moderate-to-severe symptoms co-occur during cancer treatment for breast cancer. The dynamic process of multiple symptoms may be altered by future identification of a shared etiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Undergraduate nursing students may not have the opportunity to assess and intervene with a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia during their clinical rotation. Provision of a standardized patient simulation experience affords students this opportunity in a safe setting without risk to the patient or student. METHODS A quasi-experimental design was utilized to explore the impact of the addition of a standardized patient simulation scenario depicting a patient with a diagnosis of schizophrenia on undergraduate nursing student knowledge and perceived competency. RESULTS The mean values for perceived competence and knowledge increased significantly over the three time periods (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The results suggest that incorporating SP simulation into the undergraduate psychiatric mental health nursing course has the potential to enhance both knowledge and perceived competency of students in caring for patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and ultimately promote better healthcare outcomes.

Abstract
Student engagement during classes includes behavioural, cognitive and emotional components, and is a pre-requisite for successful active learning environments. A novel approach to measuring student engagement was developed, involving triangulation of real-time student-self report, observation by trained observers and heart rate measurement. The self-report instrument was evaluated in four separate cohorts (n = 123) at Monash University and the University of North Carolina. The six item self-report demonstrated good reliability (Cronbach’s alpha values ranged from 0.7–0.81). The self-report showed predictive validity in that small group activities were rated as significantly more engaging than didactic lecturing. Additionally, there was significant inter-instructor variability and within-class variability, indicating good discrimination between classroom activities. This self-report may prove useful to academic teaching staff in evaluating and refining their active learning activities. Independent observation was not found to correlate with student self-report, due in part to students who were pretending to engage being rated as engaged by an observer. Strikingly, students reported that they were pretending to engage for 23% of class time, even for highly regarded instructors. Individual participants were rated as engaged for 42 of the 46 intervals for which they reported that they had “pretended to engage”, indicating that the two observers were unable to detect disengagement during periods in which students pretended to engage. Instructors should be aware that student cues such as eye contact and nodding may indicate pretending to engage. One particular self-report item; “I tried a new approach or way of thinking about the content”, correlated positively with heart rates, and a controlled study reproduced this finding during two activities that required students to try a new approach to understanding a concept. Agreement with this item also correlated with superior performance on two in-class written assessment tasks (n = 101, p<0.01). Further use of this tool and related educational research may be useful to identify in-class activities that are engaging and likely to lead to improved student attainment of learning outcomes.

Using the cultural consonance theory and the assumptions embedded in the culture consensus model, the present article addresses the associations between consensually understood and collectively shared cultural models and individual mental health. The study specifically explored the role of internalization. A structured survey was developed to extract the local variant of the American cultural model of a “good, worthy life.” The data collected in New England in fall 2012 ( N = 306) contained measures of the individual familiarity with the cultural model, the degree of internalization of its elements, the extent to which each informant’s lifestyle matched the model in their daily life, and measures of positive and negative mental health. The results confirm that the degree of cultural competence and internalization of cultural ideas affect inter-informant variation in both negative and positive mental health, but the relationship is a complex one.

Abstract
The narrow focus of existing food parenting instruments led us to develop a food parenting practices instrument measuring the full range of food practices constructs with a focus on snacking behavior. We present the development of the questionnaire and our research on the test-retest reliability. The developed Comprehensive Snack Parenting Questionnaire (CSPQ) covers 21 constructs. Test-retest reliability was assessed by calculating intra class correlation coefficients and percentage agreement after two administrations of the CSPQ among a sample of 66 Dutch parents. Test-retest reliability analysis revealed acceptable intra class correlation coefficients (≥0.41) or agreement scores (≥0.60) for all items. These results, together with earlier work, suggest sufficient psychometric characteristics. The comprehensive, but brief CSPQ opens up chances for highly essential but unstudied research questions to understand and predict children’s snack intake. Example applications include studying the interactional nature of food parenting practices or interactions of food parenting with general parenting or child characteristics.

Abstract
American Indian adolescents residing on reservations report high levels of marijuana use. Understanding the relationships between normative mechanisms and marijuana use in this group can be especially important in designing effective strategies to prevent use. Participants were 3446 students identifying as American Indian in grades 7-12 across four academic years (2009-2012) from 45 schools. Multilevel logistic analysis was used to examine the relationships between lifetime, last month, and frequent marijuana use and measures of the normative environment. Descriptive and injunctive norms were distinctly and directly associated with all measures of marijuana use, with family injunctive norms showing a strong relationship to use (0.49 < OR < 0.58 for a 9th grade student). Family injunctive norms moderated the relationship between descriptive norms and lifetime and last month use (OR = 0.79 and 0.82, respectively), with higher family disapproval associated with a weaker relationship between descriptive norms and use. Anticipatory socialization was positively related to all measures of marijuana use, with the relationship stronger for lifetime and last month use than for frequent use (OR = 1.88, 1.74, and 1.30, respectively). A contextual variable of descriptive norms was related to lifetime and last month use (OR = 1.66 and 1.51, respectively) but not frequent use. These findings reinforce the importance of parental norms in reducing the likelihood of using marijuana. In addition, prevention strategies that increase the perception that healthy behaviors not involving marijuana use are an enjoyable way to socialize may be more effective in preventing occasional marijuana use.

Abstract
An organizing framework for understanding adolescent birth stress in immediate postpartum does not exist. Researchers evaluated adolescent birth stress within 72 hours postpartum via a modification of Slade's conceptual model of risk factors for posttraumatic stress (PTS). Birth stress was defined by negative birth appraisal and subjective distress. Precipitating factors pain management, partner presence, and delivery type, plus maintaining factor infant complications, predicted negative birth appraisal. Predisposing factors depression and prior trauma predicted subjective distress. Findings support utility of Slade's modified model of PTS risk factors for identification of adolescent early birth stress and generate nursing practice and research implications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The ability to drive is a core function supporting independent living. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) may impair driving capacity in numerous ways. Previous research has documented that individuals with TBI have more driving-related problems than other people and has identified predictors of driving status or capacity, mostly among civilians; however, no research has examined the implications of driving limitations for the well-being of individuals with TBI. OBJECTIVE To examine the association between self-reported difficulty in driving with important domains of psychological well-being in veterans with TBI, with adjustment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and years since most recent TBI. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Veterans' homes. PARTICIPANTS A total of 61 veterans of the Global Wars on Terrorism diagnosed with TBI, all outpatients at a Veterans Affairs medical center rehabilitation service. METHODS Home interviews as a baseline assessment for a larger randomized controlled trial. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Community reintegration (extent of social participation), depressive symptomatology, and role limitations due to physical health problems and those due to emotional problems. Self-rated competence in driving was the predictor, and sociodemographic characteristics, diagnosis of PTSD, severity of TBI, and time since most recent TBI were covariates. RESULTS Self-rated driving difficulty was associated with decreased community reintegration (β = .280, P =.028), greater depressive symptomatology (β = -.402, P < .001), and greater role limitations due to physical problems (β = -.312, P =.011) and to emotional problems (β = -.324, P = .006), after we adjusted for PTSD and other variables. DISCUSSION The self-reported ability to drive seems to be central to psychological well-being in veterans with TBI, showing clear associations with depression, community reintegration, and health-related role limitations. These associations cannot be attributed to comorbid PTSD. CONCLUSION Rehabilitation specialists should view driving difficulty as a risk factor for poor psychosocial outcomes in veterans with TBI and seek ways to compensate for the veteran's loss of driving if it is no longer advisable. Abstract
AIMS To examine nurse-perceived quality of care, controlling for overall job satisfaction among critical care nurses and to explore associations with work environment characteristics. BACKGROUND Nurse-perceived quality of care and job satisfaction have been positively linked to quality outcomes for nurses and patients. Much evidence exists on factors contributing to job satisfaction. Understanding specific factors that affect nurse-perceived quality potentially enables for improvements of nursing care quality. DESIGN A multicentre survey study was conducted in three Dutch intensive care units. METHODS The Dutch version of the Essentials of Magnetism II questionnaire was used; including the single-item indicators: (i) nurse-perceived quality of care; (ii) overall job satisfaction; and (iii) 58 statements on work environments. Data were collected between October 2013 - June 2014. RESULTS The majority of 123 responding nurses (response rate 45%) were more than satisfied with quality of care (55%) and with their job (66%). No associations were found with nurse characteristics, besides differences in job satisfaction between the units. After controlling for job satisfaction, nurse-perceived quality was positively associated with the work environment characteristics: adequacy of staffing, patient-centeredness, competent peers and support for education. Patient-centeredness and autonomy were the most important predictors for overall job satisfaction. CONCLUSION Factors that contribute to nurse-perceived quality of care in intensive care units, independent from the effects of overall job satisfaction, were identified. Hereby, offering opportunities to maximize high quality of care to critically ill patients. Research in a larger sample is needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aim was to compare the long-term effect of Western medicine and combined treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine on the prognosis (survival rate, symptom distress, physical function, and quality of life) of patients with lung cancer. DESIGN Longitudinal study. SETTING/LOCATION Two medical centers, one each in Northern and Southern Taiwan. PATIENTS Patients newly diagnosed with lung cancer and treated with Western medicine (n = 54) or TCM plus Western medicine (n = 30). OUTCOME MEASURES Symptom distress, physical function, and quality of life were measured by using the Symptom Distress Scale, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-Performance Status Rating, and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaires (EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-LC13), respectively. Data on these measures were collected at baseline (before treatment) and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after starting treatment. Survival was estimated by Kaplan-Meier curves. Group differences in outcomes were analyzed by generalized estimating equations. RESULTS Treatment groups did not differ significantly at baseline for demographic information; disease severity; symptom distress; or EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-LC13 scores, except for pain and dyspnea. After adjustment for these baseline effects, the combined-treatment group had better physical function and role function than the Western medicine group at 6 months (p < 0.05). The combined treatment group had better cumulative survival, but this difference did not reach significance. CONCLUSIONS To more precisely estimate the long-term effectiveness of combined treatment on the prognosis of patients with lung cancer, future studies should standardize the number of TCM visits; increase the number of participants by continuous recruitment; and ask patients to complete daily logs with single-item measures of outcomes, such as symptom distress, quality of life, and physical function. Similar studies are suggested in patients with different cancers to develop a collaborative model using Western medicine and TCM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rates of marijuana use are consistently high among reservation-based American Indian adolescents. The roles of family are unique in this ethnic group and can serve as sources of both risk and protection for substance use. PURPOSE To assess the relationships between distal and proximal family factors and lifetime and current marijuana use among American Indian and white middle and high school students who attend the same schools on or near reservations. METHODS In-school surveys were administered to 3380 American Indian and 1562 white students from 35 middle schools and 17 high schools regarding levels of marijuana use and family characteristics. Three logistic regression models (Control, Control+Distal; Control+Distral+Proximal) estimated effects of multiple family variables on lifetime and current marijuana use. RESULTS Strong effects were found for family structure, parental monitoring, family conflict, and family sanctions against marijuana use. Weaker effects were found for family participation in school events, and no relationship was found for family communication about marijuana. Anumber of similar results were found across ethnicity and middle and high school students. CONCLUSIONS Family variables exert strong and largely consistent effects across reservation-based American Indian and white youth on lifetime and current marijuana use. Interventions that include a broad range of targeted family components may serve to both limit uptake and forestall increases in adolescent marijuana use in these two groups.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate intergenerational patterns of abuse and trauma and the health consequences for women in the early childbearing years. A prospective pregnancy cohort of 1507 nulliparous women (≦24 weeks gestation) were recruited in Melbourne, Australia, 2003-2005. Follow-up was scheduled in late pregnancy, 3-, 6- and 12-month and 4-year postpartum. Childhood abuse was retrospectively reported at 4-year postpartum using the Child Maltreatment History Self Report. Intimate partner violence (IPV) was assessed at 1- and 4-year postpartum with the Composite Abuse Scale. Maternal depressive symptoms were assessed in all follow-ups using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine associations between childhood abuse, maternal mental health and IPV. Childhood abuse was reported by 41.1 % of women. In the 4 years after having their first child, 28.2 % of women reported IPV, 25.2 % depression and 31.6 % anxiety. Childhood abuse was associated with odds of depression or anxiety 1.5-2.6 times greater and 1.8-3.2 times greater for IPV. Childhood physical abuse remained significantly associated with depression and anxiety in pregnancy and postpartum after adjusting for IPV and stressful life events, while sexual abuse remained significantly associated only with anxiety. Women who begin childbearing with a history of childhood abuse are more vulnerable to IPV and poor mental health. All health care services and agencies in contact with children, young people and families should have adequate training to identify trauma associated with abuse and IPV and provide first line supportive care and referral.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore factors related to parental depressive symptoms (PDS) and family quality of life (FQOL) in parents of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with and without a specific chronic health condition (CHC), spina bifida. METHODS Two hundred and nine parents of AYA (112 with SB; and 97 without) and their AYA (46% males and 54% females) took part in a multi-site cross-sectional descriptive correlational study. In telephone interviews parents reported on measures of family satisfaction, resources, cohesion, stress, demographic and clinical data. RESULTS In the multivariate analyses, 38% of the variance of PDS was explained by family income, family resources and parent stress. Having a child with SB was not predictive of PDS. However, having a child with SB, along with family satisfaction, parent stress and PDS explained 49% of the variance of FQOL. PDS partially mediate the relationship of family resources and FQOL. CONCLUSION PDS, family stress, and resources should be evaluated routinely, especially for those with low income. Parents of AYA with SB who have elevated PDS are at increased risk of having lower reported FQOL.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in Parkinson's Disease (PD) lacks universally agreed definition and its components. A conceptual framework helps in understanding the essential domains and their inter-relationship while developing patient reported outcome measure. AIM To construct a conceptual framework for developing HRQoL scale in PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS A panel of 7 experts extracted 6 major domains for measuring HRQoL in PD from literature review including 8 disease specific scales for PD, 2 books on quality of life, 5 websites, relevant articles; and content analysis of semi-structured interviews of stakeholders (28 persons with PD, 6 caregivers and 9 clinicians). Extracted domains were subjected to consensus of stakeholders (7 persons with PD, 7 caregivers and 7 clinicians) on 7 point Likert scale. The panel constructed a conceptual framework and a definition of HRQoL in PD in context of available guidelines for developing patient reported outcome measures. RESULTS The extracted domains were physical, non motor symptom, psychological, family/social, finance and treatment domains. Median of all six domains on 7 point Likert scale was 7 and inter-quartile distance was <1 in consensus agreement. The conceptual framework consisted of indicator domains and causal domains. Indicator domains (physical, psychological, and social and family) estimate the influence of causal domains (motor symptoms, non motor symptoms, finance and treatment) on quality of life. The definition emphasizes upon the person's perception of their symptoms and its impact on their lives. CONCLUSION This study defined and developed a conceptual framework for HRQoL scale for PD.

Abstract
High-risk pregnancies affect a significant number of women each year. Limited information exists on how these women appraise the risk to their pregnancy. This descriptive study of expectant women who were medically categorized as high risk examined differences in women's self-appraisal of risk to themselves and their babies, based on hospitalization history, and differences among risk appraisals made by women and their health care providers. Women who were currently hospitalized had significantly lower self-appraised mother risk scores than both the women who were previously hospitalized and those never hospitalized. Women who were never hospitalized had significantly lower self-appraised baby risk scores than the women in both the currently and previously hospitalized groups. Women who were previously hospitalized scored highest on self-appraised risk to mother and risk to baby. Women reported significantly lower self-appraised risk to mother scores than their nurses.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify maternal, child, and family factors related to the employment status and employment history of single mothers of low-birth-weight (LBW) and full-term preschoolers. A sample of 121 female-headed, single-parent families with 3-, 4-, and 5- year-old LBW and full-term children was recruited through admission records to three Level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and birth records of two normal newborn nurseries. Results show that the birth of an LBW infant was not related to employment status, number of hours employed per week, or employment history for single mothers. Employed mothers had significantly more education and more positive attitudes toward employment. Controlling for other factors, never being married, and having more children, more federal income, and less positive employment attitudes were predictive of nonemployment. Both employed and nonemployed women expressed preference for employment.
