Abstract
Objective Food insecurity (FI) is associated with poor metabolic health. It is assumed that energy intake and diet quality underlie this association. We tested the hypothesis that dietary factors (quantity and quality) mediate the association of FI with excess weight, waist circumference and glycemic control [glycohemoglobin (A1C)]. Methods A mediation analysis was performed on data from the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey using FI as an independent variable; body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and A1C as metabolic outcome variables and total energy intake, macronutrients, and diet quality measured by the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) as potential mediators. Results Despite a greater prevalence of obesity in participants experiencing FI, daily reported energy intake was similar in food-secure and -insecure subjects. In adjusted analyses of the overall cohort, none of the examined dietary factors mediated associations between FI and metabolic outcomes. In race-stratified analyses, total sugar consumption was a partial mediator of BMI in non-Hispanic Whites, while diet quality measures (HEI-2015 total score and added sugar subscore) were partial mediators of waist circumference and BMI, respectively, for those in the "other" ethnic group. Conclusion Dietary factors are not the main factors underlying the association of FI with metabolic health. Future studies should investigate whether other social determinants of health commonly present in the context of FI play a role in this association.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although food insecurity has been associated with poor sleep outcomes in young and middle-aged adults, few studies have examined this relationship in older adults. This study aimed to examine the relationship between food insecurity and sleep duration, quality, and disturbance among older adults in six low-income countries (LMICs). DESIGN AND SETTING We analyzed nationally representative cross-sectional data from 33,460 adults (≥50 years) from the Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE). MEASUREMENTS Food insecurity (FI) was assessed using two questions regarding the frequency of eating less and hunger caused by a lack of food. Sleep outcomes included self-reported sleep duration, sleep quality, and sleep disturbances (difficulty falling asleep, frequent sleep interruptions, and early awakening) assessed based on self-reports over two nights. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess country-specific relationships between food insecurity and sleep outcomes, and random-effects models were used to estimate pooled associations. RESULTS The prevalence of FI among older adults in the overall population was 16.2%. In pooled analyses, FI was significantly associated with long sleep duration ≥ 9 h (OR=1.58, 95% CI: 1.30 to 1.93; P=0.001). There were also significant pooled associations between FI and poor sleep quality (OR=1.34, 95% CI: 1.14 to 1.56; P < 0.001) and sleep disturbances (OR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.91; P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the current study found that FI is adversely associated with sleep duration, quality and disturbances in older adults, with some heterogeneity by country. The findings suggest food policies and intervention programs are needed for vulnerable households.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation, which is a decrease in duration and quality of sleep, is a common problem in today's life. Epidemiological and interventional investigations have suggested a link between sleep deprivation and overweight/obesity. Sleep deprivation affects homeostatic and non-homoeostatic regulation of appetite, with the food reward system playing a dominant role. Factors such as sex and weight status affect this regulation; men and individuals with excess weight seem to be more sensitive to reward-driven and hedonistic regulation of food intake. Sleep deprivation may also affect weight through affecting physical activity and energy expenditure. In addition, sleep deprivation influences food selection and eating behaviours, which are mainly managed by the food reward system. Sleep-deprived individuals mostly crave for palatable energy-dense foods and have low desire for fruit and vegetables. Consumption of meals may not change but energy intake from snacks increases. The individuals have more desire for snacks with high sugar and saturated fat content. The relationship between sleep and the diet is mutual, implying that diet and eating behaviours also affect sleep duration and quality. Consuming healthy diets containing fruit and vegetables and food sources of protein and unsaturated fats and low quantities of saturated fat and sugar may be used as a diet strategy to improve sleep. Since the effects of sleep deficiency differ between animals and humans, only evidence from human subject studies has been included, controversies are discussed and the need for future investigations is highlighted.

Abstract
Food insecurity, poised to increase with burgeoning concerns related to climate change, may influence sleep, yet few studies examined the food security-sleep association among racially/ethnically diverse populations with multiple sleep dimensions. We determined overall and racial/ethnic-specific associations between food security and sleep health. Using National Health Interview Survey data, we categorised food security as very low, low, marginal and high. Sleep duration was categorised as very short, short, recommended and long. Sleep disturbances included trouble falling/staying asleep, insomnia symptoms, waking up feeling unrested and using sleep medication (all ≥3 d/times in the previous week). Adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and other confounders, we used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) for sleep dimensions by food security. Among 177 435 participants, the mean age of 47⋅2 ± 0⋅1 years, 52⋅0 % were women, and 68⋅4 % were non-Hispanic (NH)-White. A higher percent of NH-Black (7⋅9 %) and Hispanic/Latinx (5⋅1 %) lived in very low food security households than NH-White (3⋅1 %) participants. Very low v. high food security was associated with a higher prevalence of very short (PR = 2⋅61 [95 % CI 2⋅44-2⋅80]) sleep duration as well as trouble falling asleep (PR = 2⋅21 [95 % CI 2⋅12-2⋅30]). Very low v. high food security was associated with a higher prevalence of very short sleep duration among Asian (PR = 3⋅64 [95 % CI 2⋅67-4⋅97]) and NH-White (PR = 2⋅73 [95 % CI 2⋅50-2⋅99]) participants compared with NH-Black (PR = 2⋅03 [95 % CI 1⋅80-2⋅31]) and Hispanic/Latinx (PR = 2⋅65 [95 % CI 2⋅30-3⋅07]) participants. Food insecurity was associated with poorer sleep in a racially/ethnically diverse US sample.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We evaluated associations between food insecurity (FI) and the quality and quantity of sleep in adults (≥18 years). DESIGN The current study represented a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. SETTING Databases of PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science were searched from inception until 6 June 2022. Meta-analyses were conducted using random-effects models, and effect sizes were reported as OR and 95 % CI. PARTICIPANTS Data from ten eligible observational studies, including 83 764 participants, were included. RESULTS FI was associated with an increased risk of poor sleep quality (OR = 1·45; 95 % CI (1·24, 1·70), I2 = 95, P < 0·001, n 7). Besides, subgroup analysis showed increased risk of poor sleep quality corresponding to the severity of FI across mild (OR = 1·31; 95 % CI (1·16, 1·48), I2 = 0 %, P < 0·001, n 5), moderate (OR = 1·49; 95 % CI (1·32, 1·68), I2 = 0 %, P < 0·001, n 5) and severe (OR = 1·89; 95 % CI (1·63, 2·20), I2 = 0 %, P < 0·001, n 5) levels. Similarly, subgroup analysis by sleep problems showed that FI was associated with an increased the risk of trouble falling asleep (OR = 1·39; 95 % CI (1·05, 1·83), I2 = 91 %, P = 0·002, n 3) and trouble staying asleep (OR = 1·91; 95 % CI (1·37, 2·67), I2 = 89 %, P < 0·001, n 3). Moreover, FI was associated with the odds of shorter (OR = 1·14; 95 % CI (1·07, 1·21), I2 = 0 %, P < 0·001, n 4) and longer sleep duration (OR = 1·14; 95 % CI (1·03, 1·26), I2 = 0 %, P = 0·010, n 4). CONCLUSIONS Collective evidence supports that FI is associated with poor sleep quality and quantity in adults. Preventative and management strategies that address FI may provide health benefits beyond improving nutritional status per se.

Abstract
Background: Childhood obesity has increased globally during the past four decades. Food insecurity could heighten the risk of obesity. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of sleep duration in the association between food insecurity and childhood obesity and whether there are differences by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Method: Data from the National Survey of Children's Health for the years 2016-2020 were used, including children 10-17 years of age. We employed causal mediation analysis within a counterfactual framework to decompose the total effect of food insecurity into natural direct and indirect effects and estimate the proportion mediated. Result: The prevalence of obesity was 15.8% in our study sample. Children with food insecurity had 78% higher odds [odds ratio (OR) = 1.78, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.70-1.86] of having obesity compared with children who were food secure. Overall, only 6.13% of this association was mediated by sleep duration. The association between food insecurity and obesity was stronger in females (OR = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.84-2.10) than males (OR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.56-1.75), but the proportion mediated by sleep duration was larger in males (7.13%) than females (5.22%). Evidence of mediation was more pronounced in children 10-11 years of age and non-Hispanic Asian children (proportion mediated = 14.85% and 11.21%, respectively). Conclusion: Food insecurity is associated with an increased prevalence of obesity among children. Although a small proportion of this association is mediated by sleep duration, these results suggest that sleep should be considered when assessing the link between food insecurity and childhood obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) individuals report high obesity rates and low physical activity (PA) levels. This study examined associations between neighborhood social cohesion, obesity, and PA among NHPI adults. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the 2014 NHPI National Health Interview Survey were analyzed. Social cohesion was assessed using a summative scale and categorized as low, medium, and high. PA was measured via self-report and categorized as insufficiently active (0-149 min/wk) or sufficiently active (150+ min/wk). Obesity status was based on self-reported height and weight measures converted into standard BMI categories. Multivariable logistic regression models estimated odds of obesity and sufficient PA associated with social cohesion level. RESULTS The study sample included n = 2,590 NHPI adults. Compared with those in low social cohesion neighborhoods, participants in high social cohesion neighborhoods had increased sufficient PA odds (odds ratio [OR] = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.19-2.12; p = 0.003) and decreased obesity odds (OR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.40-0.83; p = 0.005). No associations were observed between social cohesion and obesity and PA outcomes comparing individuals in medium versus low social cohesion neighborhoods. CONCLUSIONS High social cohesion was associated with reduced obesity odds and increased sufficient PA odds. Findings highlight the importance of enhancing social connectivity as a potential strategy to promote PA and healthy weight among NHPI individuals.

Abstract
During the early days of the pandemic and in the context of a seemingly unknown global threat, several potential major sleep disruptors were identified by sleep researchers and practitioners across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic combined several features that, individually, had been shown to negatively affect sleep health in the general population. Those features included state of crisis, restrictions on in-person social interactions, as well as financial adversity. To address the lack of a comprehensive summary of sleep research across these three distinctive domains, we undertook three parallel systematic reviews based on the following themes: 1) Sleep in times of crises; 2) Sleep and social isolation; and 3) Sleep and economic uncertainty. Using a scoping review framework, we systematically identified and summarized findings from these three separated bodies of works. Potential moderating factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, psychological predisposition, occupation and other personal circumstances are also discussed. To conclude, we propose novel lines of research necessary to alleviate the short- and long-term impacts of the COVID-19 crises and highlight the need to prepare the deployment of sleep solutions in future crises.

Abstract
This study examines the general health of consecrated persons (CP) in the Czech Republic (CZ) and in Slovakia (SK) compared to control samples of the Czech population. The sample of 293 CP participants (age: M = 47.52, SD = 9.57, females: 78.88%, 180 Czechs, 213 Slovaks) was compared with two control samples, one of which was nationally representative. Comparing CP with the general population, we measured the frequency of recent health complaints, the occurrence of chronic illnesses, general health and the individual chronotype. Compared to the representative sample, CP had a higher chance of suffering from pelvis minor pain and obesity but a lower chance of diabetes. Furthermore, CP had higher odds of having worse general health. Comparing “larks” with “night owls” among CP, the “night owls” had a significantly higher chance of suffering from worse general health. “Night owl” CP also seem to suffer more from backache and depression/anxiety and to have more problems with falling asleep. Compared to the overall society, CP in CZ and SK tend to have similar or worse general health. The results differ from the findings in the US, pointing to the positive health effects of the spiritual experience and structured daily routine of CP. Thus, this study shows the importance of more detailed research on the way of life of Czech and Slovak CP to determine the factors with the most negative health effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are health concerns associated with unhealthy sleep duration. A growing body of evidence indicates that there are disparities in sleep duration based upon race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Prior studies have suffered from inadequate measures of poverty and have not included Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI). METHODS Using the 2014 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and the 2014 NHPI-NHIS, the effect of race/ethnicity and poverty was examined for associations with sleep duration. RESULTS Significant differences among race/ethnicity groups and sleep duration were found in adjusted associations. Compared with Whites, NHPIs and Blacks were twice as likely to experience very short sleep; NHPI, Hispanic, and Blacks were more likely to experience short sleep; Blacks were also more likely to experience long sleep. Asians were less likely to experience unhealthy sleep (very short, short, or long sleep). Persons living in poverty were significantly more likely to experience very short sleep compared with persons not living in poverty. CONCLUSION This is the first population-based study that has examined the relationship between sleep duration and poverty with a large sample that included NHPI in relation to other races/ethnicities. The difference in sleep duration between NHPI and Asians provides a strong rationale for not aggregating Asian and NHPI data in population-based studies.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic worsened financial stress for higher education students in the U.S. Financial stress is associated with poor dietary behaviors; however, factors that might influence this relationship are not well characterized. The present cross-sectional study investigated the associations between financial stress and dietary intake and dietary risk scores among higher education students (undergraduate and graduate students) in the U.S. and examined whether poor sleep quality and short sleep duration mediated the relationship between financial stress and dietary risk score. Validated tools were used to assess financial stress, sleep quality, sleep duration, dietary intake, and dietary risk. A total of 1280 students from three large U.S. universities completed the study. Results indicated that higher financial stress was associated with lower vegetable, fruit, fiber, and calcium intake, higher added sugar intake from sugar sweetened beverages, and higher dietary risk score. Further, the positive relationship between financial stress and dietary risk score was completely mediated by poor sleep quality among students who reported poor sleep quality and by short sleep duration among students who slept less than 7 h per night. These findings suggest that students might benefit from both financial management training and sleep education services to reduce undesirable dietary behaviors.

Abstract
Background: Shorter sleep duration and lower sleep quality have been previously associated with greater obesity risk among adult samples. Food insecurity has also been found to impact sleep patterns and obesity. Yet few studies have explored associations between sleep, food insecurity, and obesity in adolescent populations, who may have more irregular sleep patterns. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine associations between measures of sleep, food insecurity, and weight status. Methods: Data were obtained from the Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) Study, an online cross-sectional study of parent and adolescent (12-17-year old) dyads. Participants were drawn from a Consumer Opinion Panel representative of the general population of the United States with respect to sex, education, income, age, household size, and region. First, multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine associations between sleep measures (adolescent-reported average nighttime sleep duration, having a regular bedtime, and having difficulty staying asleep), food insecurity (a validated two-item parent-reported measure), and weight status (being underweight, of healthy weight, overweight, and obese). Weight status was based upon adolescent BMI z-scores using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention growth charts using information from parent report of adolescent height and weight and adolescent-reported age and sex among adolescents (N = 1544). Conditional process models were also fitted to the data to determine whether food insecurity moderates the associations between sleep measures and weight status, and to determine whether the association between food insecurity and weight status is mediated by average sleep duration. Results: Compared to those with food security, a greater percentage of those with food insecurity reported having difficulties staying asleep and a longer average sleep duration. Multinomial logistic regression models demonstrated that having a regular bedtime was associated with lower odds of having obesity, having difficulties staying asleep was associated with greater odds of being underweight, and having food insecurity was associated with greater odds of being overweight. Conditional process models demonstrated that food insecurity did not moderate associations between sleep measures and weight status and that average nighttime sleep duration did not mediate the association between food insecurity and weight status. Conclusions: This is one of the first studies to examine associations between sleep, food insecurity, and weight status among adolescents. Results provide additional support for the need to uncover mechanisms for how sleep and food insecurity affect pediatric obesity using longitudinal data.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) population is rapidly growing in the USA. NHPIs face significant health disparities and have a high prevalence of diabetes compared to the general US population. RECENT FINDINGS Recent culturally-adapted diabetes interventions have shown promise in addressing these disparities among NHPI communities. The interventions showed success by utilizing a community-based approach that honored NHPIs' collectivist culture, addressed social determinants of health that influence disease control and prevention, and utilized NHPI community health workers (CHWs) and peer educators for key roles in implementation of the intervention. To address health disparities in the NHPI community, much can be learned from existing, successful interventions. Promising interventions share several attributes. The interventions were: culturally adapted using a community-based participatory research approach; addressed specific social determinants of health (i.e., cost of healthy food, transportation, access to health care) that influence disease control and prevention; honored the collectivist culture of NHPI communities by integrating social networks and extended family members; and utilized NHPI community members, including peer educators and CHWs, for intervention implementation. Further investment to scale these interventions for regional and national implementation is needed to address the significant diabetes disparities that NHPIs face.
