Abstract
BACKGROUND Improved survival rates broadened the pediatric oncology focus to include health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This cross-sectional study aimed to examine HRQoL by treatment phase and disease risk level in pediatric patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), including those in early survivorship. PROCEDURE A subset of data from a larger prospective cohort study was analyzed. Data were collected from 73 patients (73 parent reports and 28 self-reports). Parent proxy and self-report PROMIS measures assessed HRQoL across treatment phases (early intensive, maintenance, and off treatment) and disease risk groups (standard vs high). Analyses assessed the relationship between parent proxy and patient self-reports and the differences in HRQoL among treatment phases and risk groups. RESULTS Parent proxy reports generally indicated worse fatigue, pain interference, and mobility compared with patient self-reports. Self-reports in the early intensive treatment group suggested worse depressive symptoms, fatigue, mobility, and upper extremity function compared with those in later phases. Parent proxy reports showed worse fatigue and depressive symptoms in early intensive treatment group relative to those in later phases. Patient self-reports in the maintenance group demonstrated the best peer relationships scores. Parent proxy reports in the high-risk group reported significantly higher depressive symptoms and fatigue compared with the standard-risk group. CONCLUSIONS Differences in HRQoL suggest targets for further assessment and intervention. The early treatment and immediate post-survivorship periods may represent particularly critical time points. Longitudinal studies with larger and diverse samples should further explore HRQoL trajectories in this population.

Abstract
Reaching age-appropriate physical activity levels is a significant challenge for many children, adolescents, and young adults (CAYAs) with and following an oncological disease. Many CAYAs require support in addressing physical activity-specific questions and need assistance in accessing sports and exercise offers in their local area. Since many clinics cannot provide such time-intensive counseling, the nationwide operating network ActiveOncoKids (NAOK), funded by the German Cancer Aid, offers individualized support to participate in physical activity (PA). This paper describes the NAOK-Physical-Activity-Counseling (-PAC) concept and evaluates the initial 200 consultations, focusing on recruitment, objectives, and oncology-specific parameters. Ultimately, dimensions of barriers and facilitators and intervention options are discussed.

Abstract
Many patients after pediatric cancer suffer from long-term cognitive difficulties. This study investigates the development of cognitive and psychosocial functions between diagnosis and one year after cancer treatment and reveals insight into the association between cognitive and psychosocial development and various risk factors. This retrospective clinical record review included fifty-seven patients, aged 4-16 years, that were examined at the beginning of the cancer treatment (T1) and one year after cancer treatment (T2) to evaluate the development of working memory (WM), processing speed (PS), psychosocial functions, and quality of life (QoL). About half of the patients showed stable/favorable cognitive development (PS 51.9%; WM 41.4%). The other half exhibited a non-favorable cognitive development, with a decrease of performance between T1 and T2. In 51.6-77.4%, psychosocial functions remained stable/increased between T1 and T2 and QoL scores remained stable in 42.9-61.9%. Changes in prosocial behavior correlated with the development of PS (r = 0.472, p = 0.010). Age at T1 predicted PS at T2 (p = 0.020) and sex predicted peer relations at T2 (p = 0.046). About half of the patients showed stable/favorable whereas the other half experiencing non-favorable cognitive development. The observed disparities in initial and subsequent cognitive performances highlight the importance of early individualized patient monitoring and interventions. IMPACT: We investigated the cognitive and psychosocial development of pediatric cancer patients between diagnosis and one year after termination of cancer treatment. About half of the patients showed stable or favorable cognitive development in processing speed and working memory. The other half exhibited a non-favorable cognitive development, with decreasing performance. Baseline working memory and processing speed was negatively correlated with the respective change score. Changes in prosocial behavior were positively correlated with the development of processing speed. Early individualized patient monitoring and intervention is of crucial importance after pediatric cancer and its treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cancer survivors are at risk for suicidality. We aimed to expand the knowledge about protective factors and their interplay with risk factors by testing social support as a modifier of the association of Quality of Life (QoL) deficits with suicidal ideation. RESEARCH APPROACH We surveyed N = 633 childhood cancer survivors (CCS) using validated questionnaires (EORTC Core Quality of Life questionnaire QLQ-C30, Patient Health Questionnaire PHQ-9). The interaction of QoL and social support was investigated using multiple linear regression analysis. FINDINGS CCS reporting suicide attempts and current suicidal ideation (SI) had lower QoL. CCS with SI reported less social support. QoL and social support were independently associated with SI and interacted: among CCS with less social support, low QoL was more strongly associated with SI. CONCLUSION The results highlight the need for interdisciplinary survivorship care, and to focus on risk and protective factors to strengthen suicide prevention.

Abstract
Background: Social competence is a domain in which pediatric brain tumour survivors (PBTS) are at risk of challenges. To follow-up on our earlier work, in this study we assessed specific social interaction behaviors and emotional functioning in PBTS relative to typically developing youth (TD). The study coincided with the onset of the global pandemic. Methods: Sixteen PBTS and 16 typically developing youth (TD) between 8-16 years old participated in the study. Youth completed an assessment of social behavior and parents completed online surveys regarding child social and emotional adjustment. Results: PBTS experienced greater impairments in social interaction behaviors and on indices of social adjustment relative to TD. PBTS and TD experienced similar levels of emotional problems. Social behavior challenges were associated with indices of anxiety, rather than depression. Time since pandemic onset was not associated with social emotional outcomes. Conclusions: It will be important to monitor and support the social adjustment of populations such as PBTS, as well as the emotional adjustment across PBTS and TD youth, following the pandemic.

Abstract
Background: Adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer must navigate medical, psychosocial, and educational issues when confronting this life-threatening illness. Frequent hospitalizations and intense therapy disrupt attendance at school and social events. Research supports that school connectedness is a protective factor associated with improved adolescent health, psychological, and academic outcomes. However, this phenomenon is understudied in adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer. Method: This qualitative inquiry used a dimensional analysis method to uncover the nature of school connectedness in adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer prior to school reentry. Semistructured interviews with 19 adolescents explored school relationships and experiences at the time of cancer diagnosis. Data collection and inductive analysis occurred simultaneously. Results: Analysis revealed four key dimensions: "School Days and Ways," "The Boom," "The Pause," and "Connection Reconciliation: Me, You, and Learning." Additionally, "Social Scenes," "Shared Experiences," and "Seeing and Being With" emerged as subdimensions of "School Days and Ways." All adolescents in this study described being negatively impacted by the cancer experience with universal disruption in school relationships and diminished school connections. However, the desire to restore unraveled or broken relationships and reconcile connections with self, others from the school, and learning were highly salient. Discussion: This research uncovers the meaning and context of school connectedness prior to and following a cancer diagnosis, illuminating a deeper understanding of the impact of a cancer diagnosis on adolescents, school relationships, and learning. The findings provide direction in supporting adolescents as they confront the physical, psychosocial, and educational disruptions caused by their cancer.

Abstract
More than 1000 Australian adolescents and young adults (AYAs) are diagnosed with cancer annually. Many report unmet social well-being needs, which impact their mental health. Australian AYA cancer care providers lack guidance to address these needs well. We aimed to develop guidelines for caring for the social well-being of AYAs with cancer in Australia. Following the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council guidance, we formed a multidisciplinary working group (n = 4 psychosocial researchers, n = 4 psychologists, n = 4 AYA cancer survivors, n = 2 oncologists, n = 2 nurses, and n = 2 social workers), defined the scope of the guidelines, gathered evidence via a systematic review, graded the evidence, and surveyed AYA cancer care providers about the feasibility and acceptability of the guidelines. The guidelines recommend which AYAs should have their social well-being assessed, who should lead that assessment, when assessment should occur with which tools/measures, and how clinicians can address AYAs' social well-being concerns. A key clinician, who is knowledgeable about AYAs' developmental needs, should lead the assessment of social well-being during and after cancer treatment. The AYA Psycho-Oncology Screening Tool is recommended to screen for social well-being needs. The HEADSSS Assessment (Home, Education/Employment, Eating/Exercise, Activities/Peer Relationships, Drug use, Sexuality, Suicidality/Depression, Safety/Spirituality Assessment) can be used for in-depth assessment of social well-being, while the Social Phobia Inventory can be used to assess social anxiety. AYA cancer care providers rated the guidelines as highly acceptable, but discussed many feasibility barriers. These guidelines provide an optimal care pathway for the social well-being of AYAs with cancer. Future research addressing implementation is critical to meet AYAs' social well-being needs.

Abstract
Purpose: Examine associations of social developmental factors (e.g., peer/parent social attachment, romantic relationships) and perceptions of social acceptance among emerging adult survivors of childhood cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional, within-group design was used. Questionnaires included the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire, Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, Adolescent Social Self-Efficacy Scale, Personal Evaluation Inventory, Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents, and demographics. Correlations were utilized to determine associations between general demographic, cancer-specific, and the psychosocial outcome variables. Peer and romantic relationship self-efficacy were assessed as potential mediators of social acceptance in three mediation models. Relationships between perceived physical attractiveness, peer attachment, parental attachment, and social acceptance were assessed. Results: Data were collected from N = 52 adult participants (Mage = 21.38 years, standard deviation = 3.11 years) diagnosed with cancer as a child. The first mediation model demonstrated a significant direct effect of perceived physical attraction on perceived social acceptance and retained significance after adjusting for indirect effects of the mediators. The second model demonstrated a significant direct effect of peer attachment on perceived social acceptance; however, significance was not retained after adjusting for peer self-efficacy, suggesting the relationship is partially mediated by peer relationship self-efficacy. The third model demonstrated a significant direct effect of parent attachment on perceived social acceptance; however, significance was not retained after adjusting for peer self-efficacy, suggesting the relationship is partially mediated by peer self-efficacy. Conclusion: Relationships between social developmental factors (e.g., parental and peer attachment) and perceived social acceptance are likely mediated by peer relationship self-efficacy in emerging adult survivors of childhood cancer.

Abstract
We aimed to explore the feasibility and potential relevance of integrated electronic collection of patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROM and PREM) in children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) by using the example of children with kidney and hematological diseases. We performed a cross-sectional, single-center study of children <18 years of age. Children (≥10 years) and their parents received Generic PedsQL Core Scale 4.0 and custom PREM surveys to their email addresses via the REDCap platform, and the results were integrated into the hospital's electronic health records system. A total of 192 patients (98 with kidney diseases and 94 with hematological diseases) were enrolled. The overall response rate was 51%, and the median time for completion of each proxy questionnaire was approximately three minutes. The lowest PROM scores were observed in the emotional and school functioning dimensions. More favorable experiences in the diagnosis establishment process were associated with higher scores in physical, social, school functioning, and total PROM scores. A better evaluation of the hospital's environment was associated with higher social functioning, while better information provision correlated with higher physical functioning and total PROM scores. Our data indicates that integrated electronic collection of PROMs and PREMs in the population of CSHCN is feasible, but efforts to increase the response rate are needed. The associations between PROMs and PREMs suggest that future studies exploring targeted interventions at the healthcare service level to improve subjective patient outcomes are needed.

Abstract
To assess COVID-19-pandemic related anxiety and emotional-behavioral difficulties among oncologic children and their caregivers. Prospective cohort study conducted from March to November 2020. 76 pediatric oncological and 28 nonmalignant hematological patients aged 1.6-23.4 years and their caregivers. A total of 104 families completed an age-specific self-report psychological assessment; of these, 20 oncologic families completed the assessment at two time points. Ten percent of the caregivers and 13.9% of the patients reported anxiety disorder. Additionally, 3.1% of the caregivers reported behavioral difficulties. No significant differences emerged between patients' self-reports and caregivers' reports. No differences emerged between oncological and nonmalignant hematological participants. The prevalence of anxiety associated with the COVID-19 pandemic was similar to the reported prevalence of anxiety following a diagnosis of pediatric malignancy. Real-time assessment of psychological effects revealed no COVID-19-associated anxiety. Nonetheless, late effects will need to be monitored.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to elucidate the process of how adolescent and young adult childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) become independent while balancing health management and social life with a view to providing long-term support. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 Japanese CCSs aged 16-25 years. The data were then qualitatively analysed using the modified grounded theory approach. RESULTS Seven "categories" and 35 "concepts" were generated. The connections among these categories and concepts revealed the process of becoming independent while balancing health management and social life. The first phase in the process is "coordination within constraints," which includes "consciousness and worries about deteriorating health" and "adjustments to balance schoolwork and treatment." This phase changes into "challenges to being free and normal" and "release from constraints." Psychological development then occurs as "gratitude toward surrounding people" and "sustenance from experiencing a rare illness." However, CCSs also "face worries about the persistent effects of cancer," including "awareness of the necessity to continue hospital visits even into adulthood." Through these experiences, CCSs reach the phase of "finding a way to live with oneself," which integrates health management with social life. CONCLUSIONS These findings may help parents and health, education, and social-care professionals anticipate and share changes in CCSs physical condition, daily life, and psychosocial development. CCSs need support in terms of coordinating cancer therapy and school life, trying what they want to do, self-managing their own health condition, and forming their identity, including making sense of their illness experience.

Abstract
Socialization with peers is essential for development yet reduced when children and adolescents are undergoing cancer treatment. Providing opportunity for social experiences is a key role for providers working in the pediatric oncology setting. Traditional in-person socialization activities were significantly impacted by coronavirus disease-2019 restrictions, and psychosocial providers were forced to adapt their practice. This case series illustrates four unique scenarios that highlight virtual social interactions as both feasible and beneficial. While virtual socialization groups were intended to be temporary, the experiences described suggest that ongoing video-based options for some socialization activities are likely prudent for some pediatric populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS) are at risk of experiencing social competence challenges, but only a limited number of studies have used a qualitative approach to understand their social relationships. We examined PBTS responses to social interview questions within the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd edition (ADOS-2), which includes questions related to their understanding of their own relationships, as well as the construct of friendship more generally. METHODS Twenty-four PBTS (ages 9-17 years; M = 14.2 years from diagnosis; 50% male; 42% received radiation treatment) completed the ADOS-2. ADOS-2 social interview responses were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Themes were derived using an inductive thematic analysis approach. RESULTS PBTS reported that they considered trust, acceptance, respect, emotional support, and spending time together to be important aspects of friendships in general. When describing their own social relationships, some PBTS noted a lack of intimacy or closeness, spending time with their friends almost exclusively at school, with structured activities outside of school being an additional basis for friendship. Challenges to their social relationships included loneliness and reliance on family for social support, experiences of teasing and bullying, social skills deficits, and lack of insight into social situations. CONCLUSION Although PBTS were able to acknowledge many important qualities of friendships in general (e.g., trust, emotional support), these were not necessarily reported in their own friendships. PBTS also appeared to have difficulty identifying whether someone was their friend. These findings offer potential opportunities for supporting PBTS in achieving friendships consistent with their conception of this important relationship.

Abstract
Background: Youth undergoing cancer treatment and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) spend significant time in the hospital, which is disruptive to their physical, social, and emotional development. Therapeutic recreation (TR) can help individuals with an illness maintain or improve their health, quality of life, and physical functioning. TR is an understudied intervention, particularly with youth in the hospital setting. Methods: Forty-nine children (median age = 12 years, interquartile range [IQR] 11-15 years) hospitalized for cancer treatment or HSCT were assigned to participate in either the historical control or TR intervention. Participants wore a Fitbit charge HR for three days to measure movement. At the end of the study participation, they completed self-report measures of mood, social connectedness, and health-related quality of life. Results: Compared with historical controls, the TR intervention group had improved positive affect and decreased mood disturbance (p = 0.03); had better sleep quality (p = 0.003); and was more satisfied with the leisure activities offered in the hospital (p = 0.01). There were no differences in the number of steps taken per day, somatic distress, cooperation with cares, or interaction with medical personnel or caregivers. Both groups reported poor availability and support of peer companions. Discussion: TR is one avenue to increase leisure activities and positively impact mood. More thought needs to be given to how TR programs can be leveraged to increase physical activity and social connectedness.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on young people, disrupting education, routines, hobbies and peer interactions and there is concern for longer term effects on physical and mental health outcomes. Young people living with chronic health conditions face additional challenges including reduced or no face-to-face contact with medical teams, shielding and the increased stressors of being in 'at-risk' groups and social isolation. In a climate of social isolation and disconnectedness, online groups could provide a method of delivering healthcare and support that strengthens social connectedness and reduces isolation. Despite the technology being available, uptake and evidence for online groups is limited. This article shares learnings from a paediatric and adolescent psychology service delivering online groups for young people with chronic health conditions and their healthcare teams. Ideas for how to transfer group process to online platforms are considered, with examples and tips. With sufficient staffing, preparation, thought, creativity and innovation, it is possible for face-to-face groups to successfully be offered online. Caution should be exercised trying to run online groups without these provisions in place, as the safety, comfort and experience of young people could be jeopardised. Further research is needed to better understand group processes online and to consider what is lost and what is gained when comparing online to face-to-face groups.

Abstract
Background A pediatric cancer diagnosis and its treatment can have a detrimental effect on the mental health of children and their families. Screening to identify psychosocial risk in families has been recognized as a standard of care in pediatric oncology, but there has been limited clinical application of this standard thus far. A significant impediment to the implementation of psychosocial screening is the dearth of information on how to translate psychosocial screening to clinical practice, and specifically, how to follow-up from screening results. This manuscript aims to describe a protocol of a new intervention examining the feasibility and acceptability of mapping via a Psychosocial Navigator (PSN) psychosocial screening results to specific recommendations of resources for families based on measured risk for psychosocial distress and mental health symptoms. Methods The pilot randomized control trial (RCT) consists of dyads of youth (10–17 years) newly diagnosed with cancer and their primary caregiver. This RCT includes two arms (intervention and control group), with each group completing measurements near diagnosis and 1 year later. After the initial assessment, dyads in the intervention group receive monthly screening results and recommendations from the study PSN that are tailored to these results. The patient’s primary healthcare team (nurse, social worker, oncologist) also receive the risk, distress, and mental health results as well as the recommendations from the PSN. Discussion This study addresses a significant barrier to the implementation of psychosocial screening in pediatric oncology: specifically, the limited knowledge of how to follow-up from screening results. Findings from this pilot will inform a future definitive RCT to test the effectiveness of the intervention on patient and family mental health outcomes. This project has implications for enhancing clinical care in pediatric oncology, as well as other pediatric populations. Strengths and limitations of this study This is the first study of screening and follow-up using a psychosocial navigator. This study involves both patient and caregiver report. Abstract
BACKGROUND Children and adolescent survivors of brain tumors may experience impairments in social competence. OBJECTIVE This qualitative randomized controlled substudy aimed to investigate the outcomes of a social skills intervention group by interviewing these children and adolescents and their caregivers following group participation. INTERVENTIONS/METHODS Children and adolescents were randomized to the Social Skills Intervention Program or the attention control group. Using purposive sampling, 12 patients (average age, 11.42 years) and 12 caregivers were interviewed following group participation. The Social Skills Intervention Program consists of eight 2-hour manualized sessions delivered weekly; each session was structured around a social skill (eg, making friends, bullying) through arts and crafts and cognitive-behavioral strategies. The sessions in the control group were structured around daily themes (eg, summer activities) doing arts and crafts. Interviews were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS Themes unique to the intervention program included improved self-control and self-acceptance, reduced feelings of sadness, and improved problem solving. Themes common to both groups included group bonding over similar experiences, increased social confidence with peers and family, and reduced acting out. CONCLUSIONS This study uncovered additional unique intervention effects not captured by quantitative measures: improved self-control and problem solving and benefits of the group experience in general. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Findings support the need for group socialization opportunities for children with brain tumors. Nurses can promote socializing opportunities for children and adolescent survivors of brain tumors during and after medical treatment ends to prevent social competence deterioration.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study explores human flourishing (HF) in adolescents with cancer (AC) as witnessed by their health care providers, and it develops a list of critical attributes associated with HF to describe the positive outcomes witnessed. DESIGN AND METHODS Our study used a qualitative descriptive design incorporating data from an open-ended electronic survey and semi-structured individual interviews with 17 pediatric oncology health care providers. RESULTS We found 3 major themes (positive forward motion, connectedness, and self-character) representing 11 critical attributes of human flourishing in AC: (1) initiative and enterprise, (2) positivity and evocativeness, (3) tranquility and maturity, (4) perseverance and tenacity, (5) compassion and empathy, (6) social engagement and connection, (7) wisdom and translation into life, (8) supportive background, (9) self-awareness and self-agency, (10) transcendence and full potential, and (11) meaning-making. CONCLUSIONS Understanding the concept of HF as it applies to the needs of AC is a step toward establishing it as a comprehensive health care goal and toward developing care provider guidelines for its promotion. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Given the attributes of HF in AC, nurses can consider HF as an ultimate nursing care outcome and should focus on goals of care beyond disease treatment and symptoms mitigation when providing care for this population. Holistic, individualized assessment, timely care during each phase of treatment, and developmentally tailored intervention should be provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To know the perception of children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment about hospitalization. METHODS Qualitative research conducted with 13 children and adolescents hospitalized for cancer treatment at a referral hospital in southern Brazil. Semi-structured interviews mediated by the drawing technique were conducted from May to November 2018. Data was submitted to inductive thematic analysis based on the theoretical framework of Brazil's National Humanization Policy. RESULTS Disturbances were detected in the professionals' communication with the hospitalized children and adolescents. The participants felt socially isolated and highlighted the importance of recreational activities during hospitalization. CONCLUSION Infant cancer is complex and needs multidisciplinary care during the treatment, enabling the organization of healthy and welcoming spaces that favor humanization of care.

Objectives
The preschool years (ages 4–6) are essential for the development of social–emotional skills, such as problem solving, emotion regulation, and conflict resolution. For children with cancer treated during this period, especially those with brain tumors, there are questions regarding the consequences of missed normative social experiences. The objective of this pilot study was to explore the social–emotional functioning of young children with brain tumors, as compared to those with non-CNS solid tumors, who have recently completed treatment.
Methods
Children with brain (n = 23) or solid tumors (n = 20) 4–6 years of age (5.42 ± 0.73 years; 60.5% male, 65.1% white) who were 8.21 (SD = 2.42) months post-treatment completed objective measures (Challenging Situations Task, NEPSY-II) of social functioning while a caregiver completed questionnaires (e.g., BASC-3, NIH Toolbox Emotion Measures).
Results
A large portion of the sample (brain tumor: 65.2%, solid tumor: 44.4%) fell in the clinical range on parent-report measures of peer interaction. There were no statistically significant differences between patient groups across measures, but effect sizes suggest youth with brain tumors potentially experienced more difficulties on some indices. All children were more likely to choose prosocial responses when presented with a challenging social situation where they were physically provoked (e.g., hit) versus socially provoked (e.g., left out).
Conclusions
Preschool-aged children with cancer may experience weaknesses in social functioning shortly after treatment, with youth with brain tumors potentially demonstrating greater concerns. Emphasizing social interaction is critical to ensure young children have the opportunity to develop critical social–emotional skills.

Abstract
Background Interprofessional education in childhood cancer is a multifaceted field involving multiple healthcare professionals with general and specialised knowledge and skills. Complex treatment, care and rehabilitation require continuous professional development and maintenance of healthcare professionals’ competencies in their field of expertise. However, limited knowledge exists in comparing interprofessional and monoprofessional education. Only a few randomised studies have evaluated the effectiveness and efficiency of interprofessional education. The objective of this single-centre, investigator-initiated cluster randomised trial is to study the effect of interprofessional versus monoprofessional case-based learning on healthcare professionals’ knowledge of gastrointestinal side effects and attitudes towards team collaboration. Methods This study will randomise healthcare professionals to participate in either the experimental interprofessional group or the control monoprofessional group of case-based learning. The topic of the case-based intervention will be gastrointestinal side effects, one of six categories identified in a three-round Scandinavian Delphi study as relevant for interprofessional education in childhood cancer. The primary outcome is the self-reported questionnaire Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale. Secondary outcomes are measured by the self-reported questionnaires Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale Questionnaire, Safety Attitudes Questionnaire, and knowledge will be evaluated using a multiple-choice quiz. Participants will receive the self-reported questionnaires about 2 weeks before and 1 month after the intervention. On the day of the intervention, participants will answer a multiple-choice quiz before and after the case-based learning. Linear mixed models will be used to compare differences between the two groups in mean scores postintervention, adjusting for preintervention scores. Discussion This study will provide insight into the differences between interprofessional and monoprofessional case-based learning and how it affects healthcare professionals’ knowledge of gastrointestinal side effects and attitudes towards team collaboration. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Brain tumors during childhood may disrupt the development and maintenance of friendships due to the impact of disease- and treatment-related factors on functioning. The goal of this study was to determine if children treated for either a brain tumor or a non-central nervous system (CNS) solid tumor could name a friend and to evaluate the social information processes associated with the ability to name a friend. METHOD Youth (ages 7-14) treated for either a brain tumor (n = 47; mean age = 10.51 years) or a non-CNS solid tumor (n = 34; mean age = 11.29) completed an assessment within 6 months of the conclusion of treatment that included asking participants to name a friend and completing measures of social information processing (SIP). Rates of self-reported friendship were compared between groups and correlates of being able to name a friend were evaluated. RESULTS Youth treated for a brain tumor (61.7%) were significantly less likely to name a friend compared with youth treated for a non-CNS solid tumor (85.3%). Diagnosis type (brain vs. non-CNS), relapse status, attribution style, and facial affect recognition were significant predictors of being able to name a friend or not in a logistic regression model. CONCLUSIONS Youth treated for a brain tumor and those who experienced a disease relapse are at risk for impairments in friendships; difficulties with SIP may increase this risk. Targeted screening and intervention efforts for children diagnosed with brain tumors and those who have relapsed could address difficulties with peers.

Abstract
Survivors of childhood cancer are at risk of experiencing fatigue, pain, lower levels of physical activity, increased engagement in risky health behavior, and poor social adjustment, after finishing treatment. Risks are more pronounced for survivors of specific diagnoses or receiving specific treatment protocols. Interventions to address these outcomes are in their infancy. Future research should focus on exploring the antecedents and consequences of these outcomes. In the meantime, researchers and cancer centers should attempt to provide high-quality and accessible health information to survivors through various media outlets to encourage healthy behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To delineate the impact of treatment exposures and chronic health conditions on psychological, educational, and social outcomes in adolescent survivors of Wilms tumor. METHODS Parent reports from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study were analyzed for 666 adolescent survivors of Wilms tumor and 698 adolescent siblings. Adjusting for race and household income, survivors were compared to siblings on the Behavior Problems Index and educational outcomes. Multivariable modified Poisson regression estimated relative risks (RR) for therapeutic exposures and chronic health conditions (CTCAE 4.03 graded) among survivors, adjusting for sex, race, income, and age at diagnosis. RESULTS Compared to siblings, adolescent survivors of Wilms tumor were more likely to take psychoactive medication (9.4% vs. 5.1%, p < 0.001) and utilize special education services (25.5% vs. 12.6%, p < 0.001) but did not differ significantly in emotional and behavioral problems. Survivors were less likely to be friendless (7.2% vs. 10.1%, p = 0.04) but were more likely to have difficulty getting along with friends (14.5% vs. 7.8%, p < 0.001). Among survivors, use of special education services was associated with abdomen plus chest radiation (RR = 1.98, CI:1.18-3.34). Those with grade 2-4 cardiovascular conditions had higher risk for anxiety/depression (RR = 1.95, CI:1.19-3.19), headstrong behaviors (RR = 1.91, CI:1.26-2.89), and inattention (RR = 1.56, CI:1.02-2.40). CONCLUSIONS Adolescent survivors of Wilms tumor were similar to siblings with respect to mental health concerns overall but were more likely to require special education. Monitoring of psychosocial and academic problems through adolescence is warranted, especially among those treated with radiation to the abdomen plus chest or with cardiac conditions.

Abstract
Childhood cancer survivors are at higher risk of developing neurocognitive deficits due to the intensive treatment they received at an early age. Most studies on childhood cancer survivorship have so far focused on the Western populations. Due to the ethnic, genetic, environmental, and cultural differences, clinical data of the Western populations may not be representative of Asian countries. This scoping review systematically summarized the existing clinical evidence of the neurocognitive impairment of Asian childhood cancer survivors. We searched the Embase and Medline databases for studies assessing the neurocognitive functions of survivors in Asia, who were diagnosed with cancer before the age of 19 and completed active treatment. The literature search identified 13 studies involving 2212 participants from five Asian countries: South Korea (n = 4, 30.8%), Taiwan (n = 3, 23.1%), Japan (n = 3, 23.1%), Hong Kong (n = 2, 15.4%), and Thailand (n = 1, 7.7%). The included studies focused on CNS tumors (n = 10, 76.9%), hematological malignancies (n = 7, 53.8%), or heterogeneous cancer diagnoses (n = 3, 23.1%). Collectively, mild-to-moderate impairment in intelligence was observed in 10.0 to 42.8% of survivors, which seemed higher than the reported rate in Western survivors. We speculate that the ethnic and genetic variations in drug responses and susceptibility to adverse chronic toxicities may have contributed to the differences in the prevalence and severity of neurocognitive impairment between these two populations. To better understand the effects of culturally relevant and region-specific environmental risk factors on the post-treatment neurocognitive development in cancer survivors, a holistic approach that addresses the complex interactions between biological, physical, and psychosocial factors is needed. This will aid the development of effective intervention strategies to improve the functional and psychosocial outcomes of cancer survivors in Asian societies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Children diagnosed with cancer experience stress associated with their diagnosis and treatment and are at heightened risk for problems in social adjustment. This study investigated the association between coping with cancer-related stress and problems in social adjustment across the first year after a pediatric cancer diagnosis. METHODS Mothers of children (ages 5-17 years) with cancer (N = 312) were recruited from two children's hospitals. Mother's reported on their child's social adjustment and coping near diagnosis (T1) and 12 months (T2). RESULTS Primary, secondary control, and disengagement coping were significantly associated with concurrent social adjustment at 12 months. The bivariate associations between baseline primary and secondary control coping and social problems 12 months later were no longer significant in a multivariate regression model. CONCLUSIONS These findings inform our understanding of the association between coping with cancer-related stress and social adjustment of children diagnosed with cancer. Interventions teaching primary and secondary control coping strategies for cancer-related stressors may offer some benefit to concurrent youth social adjustment. Further research is needed on how best to support social adjustment in this population over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social interaction and peer relationships are critical for development, especially for adolescents and young adults (AYA). Cancer treatment may disrupt social functioning and impact quality of life. Prior research into AYA social functioning has primarily been qualitative in nature or assessed via broad measures of functioning. Given the multi-dimensional nature of social functioning, and its importance for AYA, a person-centered approach to analyses is needed. METHODS AYA survivors of childhood cancer, ages 13 to 23 (n = 192, 51% male) and at least 1 year post-treatment (M = 7.35 ± 4.18 years post), completed measures to assess perceived social functioning, social support, and positive and negative affect. Caregivers also completed a measure of social functioning. Latent profile analysis was used to empirically derive profiles of perceived social functioning using the self-perception profile for adolescents (SPPA). RESULTS A 3-class solution provided the best fit to the data: 58.9% average, 33.7% high, and 7.5% low functioning. The average group reported mean scores that were similar to normative values available in the SPPA manual. Demographic and medical factors were unrelated to class membership. Social support and positive/negative affect differed significantly by class; caregiver-report of social functioning did not. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the majority of AYA survivors of childhood cancer are doing well socially, with perceived adequate social functioning associated with both high levels of social support as well as greater perceptions of positive affect. Future work is needed to elucidate longitudinal trajectories of social functioning, as well as to identify and intervene with those survivors who are struggling.

Abstract
Pediatric palliative care aims to alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life of children with serious disease and increase support for their parents and other family members. Integration of palliative care into the routine care of children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer has resulted in improved outcomes in patients and their families. The field of pediatric palliative oncology-encompassing primary palliative care provided by the multidisciplinary oncology team as well as subspecialty palliative care provided by the palliative care team for more complex cases-is unique from palliative care in adults given its focus on care of the child and the larger family. In this review, we focus on advancements in the specific domains within pediatric palliative oncology care including family-centered communication, assessment and management of physical symptoms and distress, psychosocial concerns, and spiritual considerations of the patient, parents, and siblings.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to explore adolescent and young adult (AYA) experiences and preferences for social support early within the continuum of cancer treatment. METHODS AYAs aged 15-25 years old at diagnosis were recruited from 6 clinical services that were purposively selected for providing specialist cancer care to AYAs across 3 Australian states and within paediatric and adult services. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted by telephone 6-24 months from diagnosis. The narrative-based interviews included preferences for psychosocial support. Interviews were transcribed and thematic analysis was undertaken using grounded theory methodology. RESULTS 60 AYAs were interviewed (mean age 20.52 [SD 2.97] years; 58% male; 72% adult settings). Analysis revealed that parents provided the foundation of emotional, informational and instrumental social support, even for older AYAs and those with partners and children. Informal emotional engagement with cancer peers was strongly appreciated during hospital treatment, while healthy peers provided welcome diversion at this time and during the transition towards their usual life. Nurses and allied health staff provided informational support to hospitalised AYAs and also provided a strong source of emotional support. Formal peer support programs were not endorsed by AYAs early in treatment but appreciated to be of greater interest to some following treatment completion. CONCLUSION Social support was predominantly provided by family, peers and health professionals. The sources and types of support most welcomed by AYAs varied according to the intensity and phase of cancer treatment and where the young person was in their cancer trajectory.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Long-term childhood cancer survivors are at risk for frailty and have significant health-related issues in adulthood. Various health promotion interventions have been proposed to enhance quality of life including wilderness therapy, which applies the impact of nature on health in a therapeutic context. Previous studies have described positive outcomes linked with various wilderness-related therapies for cancer survivors. However, there is no clarity on the role these therapies play in childhood cancer. The current scoping review aims to systematically map the concept, content and outcome of wilderness therapy for childhood cancer survivors. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This review will be guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers' manual for scoping reviews. A systematic literature search using medical subject headings (MeSH) and text words related to wilderness therapy and childhood cancer survivors will be performed in EMBASE, ERIC, Medline, Psycinfo, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus and Svemed+, Sociological Abstracts, supplemented by grey literature searches. Eligible quantitative and qualitative studies will be screened, included, assessed for quality and extracted for data by two reviewers independently. Results will be described in a narrative style, reported in extraction tables and diagrams, and where appropriate in themes and text. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study describes a protocol for a scoping review that will undertake secondary analysis of data already published in literature and is therefore exempt from medical ethical review. The scoping review will inform understanding of the benefits and risks of wilderness therapy for childhood cancer survivors, their families, practitioners, clinicians and researchers, and will help elucidate the steps necessary for building its evidence base going forward. Results will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Abstract
Children with cancer and their families experience shifts in spiritual wellness from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship or bereavement. An interdisciplinary team conducted a systematic review of quantitative and qualitative research on spiritual assessments, interventions, and outcomes in childhood cancer following PRISMA guidelines using a PROSPERO registered protocol. Thirty-nine well-designed studies were included in the final analysis. The findings from this systematic review indicate the need for early spiritual assessment with offering of continued support for the spiritual functioning of children with cancer and their families as a standard of care.

Abstract
PURPOSE Children with brain tumors (BT) are at risk for difficulties with social functioning. Research to date has focused on deficits, with no studies identifying areas of strength or resilience. Our objective was to assess the potential influence of connectedness on social functioning in youth with BT as compared with children with other cancers. METHODS Children with cancer (20 with BT, 33 with other diagnoses) were enrolled on a longitudinal study of psychosocial functioning. The current study included measures from time 2 (+1 year after enrollment; Mage = 13.11 ± 2.31, Mtimesincediagnosis = 4.95 ± 3.74 years) and time 3 (+3 years after enrollment; Mage = 14.98 ± 2.36, Mtimesincediagnosis = 6.82 ± 3.81 years). Youth completed the Hemingway Measure of Adolescent Connectedness (HMAC) at time 2. Two years later, social functioning was assessed by the self- and proxy-report versions of the Social-Emotional Assets and Resilience Scale (SEARS). RESULTS Youth with BT perceived that they were less connected to friends (t(50) = -2.13, P = 0.04), but similarly connected to peers as youth with other cancers. Youth with BT also demonstrated lower social functioning by self- and parent report. Connectedness to friends significantly mediated the relationship between diagnostic category and self-reported social functioning, such that youth with BT who reported being more connected to friends also indicated greater social functioning. Analyses using connectedness to peers and/or parent-reported social functioning were nonsignificant. CONCLUSIONS Perceiving a connection to a friend may be a protective factor that could mitigate deficits in social functioning in youth with BT. Additional research is needed to further assess the potential benefits of this construct.

Are we friends? Best friend nominations in pediatric brain tumor survivors and associated factors. Support Care Cancer 2019; 27:4237-4244. Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTSs) are at risk of impairments in social competence. Limited information is available regarding nominations and reciprocated nominations of PBTSs as best friends and factors which may predict these. PROCEDURE Caregivers of children (n = 32) aged 8-16 (38% low-grade glioma, 34% medulloblastoma, 28% other) completed ratings of child adjustment at baseline (T1) and PBTSs and classmates completed the Three Best Friends measure approximately 12 months later (T2). Sociometric data yielded ratings of best friend nominations and reciprocated best friend nominations. RESULTS Nominations of PBTSs as best friends were not significantly different than controls, but PBTSs had fewer reciprocated best friend nominations than controls. Approximately half of PBTSs in this study did not have any reciprocated best friend nominations and 25% were not nominated by any peer as a best friend. Greater symptoms of depression and lower social skills in PBTSs were associated with fewer nominations as a best friend by peers and a greater likelihood of no reciprocal best friend nominations. Greater difficulties in emotional control were associated with fewer nominations as a best friend by peers. CONCLUSIONS The discrepancy between reciprocated best friend nominations and best friend nominations highlights a need to attend to reciprocal friendships in PBTSs and further understand social information processes in this population. Longitudinal analyses illustrate the impact of emotional adjustment on PBTS friendships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychosocial follow-up in survivorship is a standard of care in pediatric oncology; however, little is known about patients' psychosocial functioning during the transition off active treatment, a unique time in the cancer journey. This study examined the social adjustment of adolescent cancer patients during this transition period, which has been understudied to date. PROCEDURE Participants were 21 patients (ages 12-18 years; age M = 14.71 years; 62% female, 81% White) with various cancer diagnoses. Patients and their parents completed the Social Competence subscale of the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), respectively, PedsQL Social Functioning subscale, and a semistructured interview 1-2 months prior to ending treatment (time 1) and 3-7 months after ending treatment (time 2). RESULTS YSR and CBCL social competence scores were within the normal range at both time points. PedsQL social functioning scores were more consistent with norms for pediatric cancer samples at time 1 and norms for healthy children at time 2, with self-reported scores significantly improving from time 1 to time 2. A subset of patients had elevated social concerns at time 1, a number that decreased by time 2. Interviews revealed both positive and negative themes related to peer relationships and support, quantity of friends, and socialization. CONCLUSIONS Most adolescent cancer patients are socially well adjusted as they transition off treatment, although a subset have elevated concerns. Interviews provide insight into complex social experiences not captured on questionnaires. Patients may benefit from screening and support during this unique time.

Abstract
Youth with brain tumors are at risk for late effects. Families report that survivors' difficulties with peer relationships are among the most distressing and impactful on quality of life. As such, interventions have been designed to improve social functioning. The objective was to review the nine published social skills intervention studies for survivors of brain tumors with regard to study design, participation rates, skills targeted, assessment measures, and outcomes. Results of this review were used to discuss future directions, with a focus on alternative approaches to inclusion criteria (including developmental considerations and screening for weaknesses), intervention timing and modality.

Abstract
Pediatric patients undergoing treatment for oncology diagnoses are likely to experience stress, anxiety, and social isolation. One role of a pediatric oncology nurse is to incorporate play into daily hospital routines. By using medical and normative play, nurses can decrease distress and promote normal growth and development. However, the use of play is not limited to pediatric patients. Oncology nurses who work with adults can incorporate similar strategies within their patient populations to reduce anxiety and stress and to improve quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With published evidence-based Standards for Psychosocial Care for Children with Cancer and their Families, it is important to know the current status of their implementation. This paper presents data on delivery of psychosocial care related to the Standards in the United States. PROCEDURE Pediatric oncologists, psychosocial leaders, and administrators in pediatric oncology from 144 programs completed an online survey. Participants reported on the extent to which psychosocial care consistent with the Standards was implemented and was comprehensive and state of the art. They also reported on specific practices and services for each Standard and the extent to which psychosocial care was integrated into broader medical care. RESULTS Participants indicated that psychosocial care consistent with the Standards was usually or always provided at their center for most of the Standards. However, only half of the oncologists (55.6%) and psychosocial leaders (45.6%) agreed or strongly agreed that their psychosocial care was comprehensive and state of the art. Types of psychosocial care provided included evidence-based and less established approaches but were most often provided when problems were identified, rather than proactively. The perception of state of the art care was associated with practices indicative of integrated psychosocial care and the extent to which the Standards are currently implemented. CONCLUSION Many oncologists and psychosocial leaders perceive that the delivery of psychosocial care at their center is consistent with the Standards. However, care is quite variable, with evidence for the value of more integrated models of psychosocial services.

Abstract
PURPOSE To qualitatively examine the experiences of diagnosis and treatment, and attitudes toward ongoing healthcare of adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of AYA cancer, to determine barriers to healthcare engagement in the early survivorship period. METHODS Forty-two participants aged between 15 and 25 years were recruited between February 2013 and October 2015 as part of a larger Australia-wide study. This study analyzed data collected through a semistructured telephone interview. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim and then coded line-by-line. Data were analyzed for emergent themes using the qualitative software NVivo. RESULTS Many participants demonstrated a good understanding of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Participants expressed high levels of confidence in their healthcare teams and demonstrated a conscientious approach to their ongoing cancer-specific and general healthcare. However, most AYAs had expectations of the cancer journey that differed from the realities of their experiences. CONCLUSIONS The results further highlight the crucial role of healthcare professionals in ensuring AYA cancer patients have accurate expectations of diagnosis and treatment, and develop a strong working knowledge of their disease that is maintained into survivorship. AYA cancer survivors may require ongoing education and support to stay engaged with long-term follow-up care.

Abstract
Young adult survivors of childhood cancer (N = 47) completed essays exploring situational coping within a mixed methods study. Data were qualitatively analyzed using consensual qualitative research-modified methodology. Five themes emerged: (1) initial reactions to cancer, (2) adjustment/coping with cancer diagnosis and treatment, (3) provisions of social support, (4) perceived effects of cancer experience, and (5) reflections on the cancer experience. Perceptions of childhood cancer experiences appear generally positive, with the majority of negative reactions emerging immediately following diagnosis. Cognitive behavioral and supportive interventions may be most beneficial in the initial postdiagnosis period and should emphasize lasting benefits, accomplishments, and profound effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine if a group social skills intervention program improves social competence and quality of life (QOL) in pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS). METHODS We conducted a randomized control trial in which PBTS (8-16 years old, off therapy for over 3 months) were allocated to receive social skills training (eg, cooperation, assertion, using social cognitive problem solving strategies, role playing, games, and arts and crafts) in 8 weekly 2-hour sessions, or an attention placebo control (games and arts and crafts only). Outcomes were self-reported, proxy-reported (caregiver), and teacher-reported using the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS), to measure social competence, and the Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL4.0, generic) to measure QOL at baseline, after intervention, and at 6 months follow-up. At baseline, SSRS were stratified into low and high scores and included as a covariate in the analysis. RESULTS Compared to controls (n = 48), PBTS in the intervention group (n = 43) reported significantly better total and empathy SSRS scores, with improvements persisting at follow-up. The PBTS in the intervention group who had low scores at baseline reported the greatest improvements. Proxy and teacher reports showed no intervention effect. CONCLUSIONS Participating in group social skills intervention can improve self-reported social competence that persisted to follow up. The PBTS should be given the opportunity to participate in social skills groups to improve social competence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer treatment can have profound effects on the growth and development of pediatric patients. Different models of psychosocial development and behavioral treatment approaches aid children receiving medical treatment. Providing education, anticipatory guidance, and individualized support to child and their families is a psychosocial standard. OBJECTIVE Clarify the different models of psychosocial development and applicable psychosocial interventions to better prepare and tailor cancer treatment to pediatric patients. METHODS Authors reviewed existing evidenced-based literature in oncology, psychology, developmental, and psychiatric while drawing on case examples and expert knowledge to illustrate the impact of cancer treatment on pediatric patients, analyze developmentally individualized needs, and describe facilitative interventions. RESULT Pediatric patients of all ages cope and adjust better to all phases of treatment when their care is delivered in a developmentally-informed and psychosocially thoughtful way. CONCLUSION Providers can comprehensively prepare their patients and families for treatment better by utilizing a psychosocially- and developmentally-informed framework while meeting individualized unique needs of patients. An integrated multidisciplinary psychosocial support team is facilitative in anticipating and meeting the needs of pediatric cancer patients and has recently become a psychosocial standard of care.

Abstract
Pediatric oncology psychosocial professionals collaborated with an interdisciplinary group of experts and stakeholders and developed evidence-based standards for pediatric psychosocial care. Given the breadth of research evidence and traditions of clinical care, 15 standards were derived. Each standard is based on a systematic review of relevant literature and used the AGREE II process to evaluate the quality of the evidence. This article describes the methods used to develop the standards and introduces the 15 articles included in this special issue. Established standards help ensure that all children with cancer and their families receive essential psychosocial care.
