Cellulose-based thermoelectric composites: A review on mechanism, strategies and applications

The ever-increasing demand for energy and environmental concerns have driven scientists to look for renewable and eco-friendly alternatives. Bio-based thermoelectric (TE) composite materials provide a promising solution to alleviate the global energy crisis due to their direct conversion of heat to electricity. Cellulose, the most abundant bio-polymer on earth with fascinating structure and desirable physicochemical properties, provides an excellent alternative matrix for TE materials. Here, recent studies on cellulose-based TE composites are comprehensively summarized. The fundamentals of TE materials, including TE effects, TE devices, and evaluation on conversion efficiency of TE materials are briefly introduced at the beginning. Then, the state-of-the-art methods for constructing cellulose-based TE composites in the forms of paper/film, aerogel, liquid, and hydrogel, are highlighted. TE performances of these composites are also compared. Following that, applications of cellulose-based TE composites in the fields of energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors) and sensing (e.g., self-powered sensors) are presented. Finally, opportunities and challenges that need investigation toward further development of cellulose-based TE composites are discussed.

NO2-Sensitive SnO2 Nanoparticles Prepared Using a Freeze-Drying Method

The n-type semiconductor SnO2 with a wide band gap (3.6 eV) is massively used in gas-sensitive materials, but pure SnO2 still suffers from a high operating temperature, low response, and tardy responding speed. To solve these problems, we prepared small-sized pure SnO2 using hydrothermal and freeze-drying methods (SnO2-FD) and compared it with SnO2 prepared using a normal drying method (SnO2-AD). The sensor of SnO2-FD had an ultra-high sensitivity to NO2 at 100 °C with excellent selectivity and humidity stability. The outstanding gas sensing properties are attributed to the modulation of energy band structure and the increased carrier concentration, making it more accessible for electron exchange with NO2. The excellent gas sensing properties of SnO2-FD indicate its tremendous potential as a NO2 sensor.

Structural Design for EMI Shielding: From Underlying Mechanisms to Common Pitfalls

Modern human civilization deeply relies on the rapid advancement of cutting-edge electronic systems that have revolutionized communication, education, aviation, and entertainment. However, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by digital systems poses a significant threat to the society, potentially leading to a future crisis. While numerous efforts are made to develop nanotechnological shielding systems to mitigate the detrimental effects of EMI, there is limited focus on creating absorption-dominant shielding solutions. Achieving absorption-dominant EMI shields requires careful structural design engineering, starting from the smallest components and considering the most effective electromagnetic wave attenuating factors. This review offers a comprehensive overview of shielding structures, emphasizing the critical elements of absorption-dominant shielding design, shielding mechanisms, limitations of both traditional and nanotechnological EMI shields, and common misconceptions about the foundational principles of EMI shielding science. This systematic review serves as a scientific guide for designing shielding structures that prioritize absorption, highlighting an often-overlooked aspect of shielding science.

Gel-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Flexible Sensing: Principles, Properties, and Applications

The rapid development of the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence technologies has increased the need for wearable, portable, and self-powered flexible sensing devices. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on gel materials (with excellent conductivity, mechanical tunability, environmental adaptability, and biocompatibility) are considered an advanced approach for developing a new generation of flexible sensors. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent advances in gel-based TENGs for flexible sensors, covering their principles, properties, and applications. Based on the development requirements for flexible sensors, the working mechanism of gel-based TENGs and the characteristic advantages of gels are introduced. Design strategies for the performance optimization of hydrogel-, organogel-, and aerogel-based TENGs are systematically summarized. In addition, the applications of gel-based TENGs in human motion sensing, tactile sensing, health monitoring, environmental monitoring, human-machine interaction, and other related fields are summarized. Finally, the challenges of gel-based TENGs for flexible sensing are discussed, and feasible strategies are proposed to guide future research.

Mechanically resilient hybrid aerogels containing fibers of dual-scale sizes and knotty networks for tissue regeneration

The structure and design flexibility of aerogels make them promising for soft tissue engineering, though they tend to come with brittleness and low elasticity. While increasing crosslinking density may improve mechanics, it also imparts brittleness. In soft tissue engineering, resilience against mechanical loads from mobile tissues is paramount. We report a hybrid aerogel that consists of self-reinforcing networks of micro- and nanofibers. Nanofiber segments physically entangle microfiber pillars, allowing efficient stress distribution through the intertwined fiber networks. We show that optimized hybrid aerogels have high specific tensile moduli (~1961.3 MPa cm3 g-1) and fracture energies (~7448.8 J m-2), while exhibiting super-elastic properties with rapid shape recovery (~1.8 s). We demonstrate that these aerogels induce rapid tissue ingrowth, extracellular matrix deposition, and neovascularization after subcutaneous implants in rats. Furthermore, we can apply them for engineering soft tissues via minimally invasive procedures, and hybrid aerogels can extend their versatility to become magnetically responsive or electrically conductive, enabling pressure sensing and actuation.

Trends on Aerogel-Based Biosensors for Medical Applications: An Overview

Aerogels are unique solid-state materials composed of interconnected 3D solid networks and a large number of air-filled pores. This structure leads to extended structural characteristics as well as physicochemical properties of the nanoscale building blocks to macroscale, and integrated typical features of aerogels, such as high porosity, large surface area, and low density, with specific properties of the various constituents. Due to their combination of excellent properties, aerogels attract much interest in various applications, ranging from medicine to construction. In recent decades, their potential was exploited in many aerogels' materials, either organic, inorganic or hybrid. Considerable research efforts in recent years have been devoted to the development of aerogel-based biosensors and encouraging accomplishments have been achieved. In this work, recent (2018-2023) and ground-breaking advances in the preparation, classification, and physicochemical properties of aerogels and their sensing applications are presented. Different types of biosensors in which aerogels play a fundamental role are being explored and are collected in this manuscript. Moreover, the current challenges and some perspectives for the development of high-performance aerogel-based biosensors are summarized.

Exploring the Versatility of Aerogels: Broad Applications in Biomedical Engineering, Astronautics, Energy Storage, Biosensing, and Current Progress

Aerogels are unique and extremely porous substances with fascinating characteristics such as ultra-low density, extraordinary surface area, and excellent thermal insulation capabilities. Due to their exceptional features, aerogels have attracted significant interest from various fields, including energy, environment, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. This review paper presents an overview of the trailblazing research on aerogels, aiming at their preparation, characterization, and applications. Various methods of aerogel synthesis, such as sol-gel, supercritical drying, are discussed. Additionally, recent progress in the characterization of aerogel structures, including their morphology, porosity, and thermal properties, are extensively reviewed. Finally, aerogel's utilizations in numerous disciplines, for instance, energy storage, thermal insulation, catalysis, environmental remedy, and biomedical applications, are summarized. This review paper provides a comprehensive understanding of aerogels and their prospective uses in diverse fields, highlighting their unique properties for future research and development.

Biomimetic, knittable aerogel fiber for thermal insulation textile

Aerogels have been considered as an ideal material for thermal insulation. Unfortunately, their application in textiles is greatly limited by their fragility and poor processability. We overcame these issues by encapsulating the aerogel fiber with a stretchable layer, mimicking the core-shell structure of polar bear hair. Despite its high internal porosity over 90%, our fiber is stretchable up to 1000% strain, which is greatly improved compared with that of traditional aerogel fibers (~2% strain). In addition to its washability and dyeability, our fiber is mechanically robust, retaining its stable thermal insulation property after 10,000 stretching cycles (100% strain). A sweater knitted with our fiber was only one-fifth as thick as down, with similar performance. Our strategy for this fiber provides rich possibilities for developing multifunctional aerogel fibers and textiles.

MXene/PPy@PDMS sponge-based flexible pressure sensor for human posture recognition with the assistance of a convolutional neural network in deep learning

The combination of flexible sensors and deep learning has attracted much attention as an efficient method for the recognition of human postures. In this paper, an in situ polymerized MXene/polypyrrole (PPy) composite is dip-coated on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge to fabricate an MXene/PPy@PDMS (MPP) piezoresistive sensor. The sponge sensor achieves ultrahigh sensitivity (6.8925 kPa-1) at 0-15 kPa, a short response/recovery time (100/110 ms), excellent stability (5000 cycles) and wash resistance. The synergistic effect of PPy and MXene improves the performance of the composite materials and facilitates the transfer of electrons, making the MPP sponge at least five times more sensitive than sponges based on each of the individual single materials. The large-area conductive network allows the MPP sensor to maintain excellent electrical performance over a large-scale pressure range. The MPP sensor can detect a variety of human body activity signals, such as radial artery pulse and different joint movements. The detection and analysis of human motion data, which is assisted by convolutional neural network (CNN) deep learning algorithms, enable the recognition and judgment of 16 types of human postures. The MXene/PPy flexible pressure sensor based on a PDMS sponge has broad application prospects in human motion detection, intelligent sensing and wearable devices.

Portable visual and electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide release from living cells based on dual-functional Pt-Ni hydrogels

It is important to monitor the intra-/extracellular concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in biological processes. However, miniaturized devices that enable portable and accurate H2O2 measurement are still in their infancy because of the difficulty of developing facile sensing strategies and highly integrated sensing devices. In this work, portable H2O2 sensors based on Pt-Ni hydrogels with excellent peroxidase-like and electrocatalytic activities are demonstrated. Thus, simple and sensitive H2O2 sensing is achieved through both colorimetric and electrochemical strategies. The as-fabricated H2O2 sensing chips exhibit favorable performance, with low detection limits (0.030 μM & 0.15 μM), wide linearity ranges (0.10 μM-10.0 mM & 0.50 μM-5.0 mM), outstanding long-term stability (up to 60 days), and excellent selectivity. With the aid of an M5stack development board, portable visual and electrochemical H2O2 sensors are successfully constructed without complicated and expensive equipment or professional operators. When applied to the detection of H2O2 released from HeLa cells, the results obtained by the developed sensors are in good agreement with those from an ultraviolet‒visible spectrophotometer (UV‒vis) (1.97 μM vs. 2.08 μM) and electrochemical station (1.77 μM vs. 1.84 μM).

The effect of synthesis conditions and process parameters on aerogel properties

Aerogels are remarkable nanoporous materials with unique properties such as low density, high porosity, high specific surface area, and interconnected pore networks. In addition, their ability to be synthesized from various precursors such as inorganics, organics, or hybrid, and the tunability of their properties make them very attractive for many applications such as adsorption, thermal insulation, catalysts, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. The physical and chemical properties and pore structure of aerogels are crucial in determining their application areas. Moreover, it is possible to tailor the aerogel properties to meet the specific requirements of each application. This review presents a comprehensive review of synthesis conditions and process parameters in tailoring aerogel properties. The effective parameters from the dissolution of the precursor step to the supercritical drying step, including the carbonization process for carbon aerogels, are investigated from the studies reported in the literature.

Development of a Novel H-Shaped Electrochemical Aptasensor for Detection of Hg2+ Based on Graphene Aerogels-Au Nanoparticles Composite

Hg2+, a highly toxic heavy metal, poses significant environmental and health risks, necessitating rapid detection methods. In this study, we employed an electrochemical aptasensor for rapid and sensitive detection of Hg2+ based on DNA strands (H2 and H3) immobilized graphene aerogels-Au nanoparticles (GAs-AuNPs) hybrid recognition interface and exonuclease III (Exo III)-mediated cyclic amplification. Firstly, Gas-AuNPs were modified on the surface of the ITO electrode to form a sensing interface to increase DNA loading and accelerate electron transfer. Then, DNA helper was generated with the addition of Hg2+ via Exo III-mediated cycling. Finally, the hairpin structures of H2 and H3 were opened with the DNA helper, and then the methylene blue (MB) functionalized DNA (A1 and A2) combined with the H2 and H3 to form an H-shaped structure. The current response of MB as an electrochemical probe was proportional to the concentration of Hg2+. Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor showed excellent performance for Hg2+, achieving a linear range from 1 fM to 10 nM and a detection limit of 0.16 fM. Furthermore, the aptasensor was used to detect Hg2+ in spiked milk samples, achieving a high recovery rate and demonstrating promising application prospects.

Mechanically Interlocked [2]Rotaxane Aerogels with Tunable Morphologies and Mechanical Properties

Mechanical bonds have been utilized as promising motifs to construct mechanically interlocked aerogels (MIAs) with mechanical adaptivity and multifunctionality. However, fabricating such aerogels with not only precise chemical structures but also dynamic features remains challenging. Herein, we present MIAs carrying dense [2]rotaxane units, which bestow both the stability and flexibility of the aerogel network. Owing to the stable chemical structure of a [2]rotaxane, MIAs possessing a precise and full-scale mechanically interlocked network could be fabricated with the aid of diverse solvents. In addition, the dynamic nature of the [2]rotaxane resulted in morphologies and mechanical performances of the MIAs that can be dramatically modulated under chemical stimuli. We hope that the structure-property relationship in MIAs will facilitate the development of mechanically interlocked materials and provide novel opportunities toward constructing smart materials with multifunctionalities.

Current trends in the detection and removal of heavy metal ions using functional materials

The shortage of freshwater resources caused by heavy metal pollution is an acute global issue, which has a great impact on environmental protection and human health. Therefore, the exploitation of new strategies for designing and synthesizing green, efficient, and economical materials for the detection and removal of heavy metal ions is crucial. Among the various methods for the detection and removal of heavy ions, advanced functional systems including nanomaterials, polymers, porous materials, and biomaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past several years due to their capabilities of real-time detection, excellent removal efficiency, anti-interference, quick response, high selectivity, and low limit of detection. In this tutorial review, we review the general design principles underlying the aforementioned functional materials, and in particular highlight the fundamental mechanisms and specific examples of detecting and removing heavy metal ions. Additionally, the methods which enhance water purification quality using these functional materials have been reviewed, also current challenges and opportunities in this exciting field have been highlighted, including the fabrication, subsequent treatment, and potential future applications of such functional materials. We envision that this tutorial review will provide invaluable guidance for the design of functional materials tailored towards the detection and removal of heavy metals, thereby expediting the development of high-performance materials and fostering the development of more efficient approaches to water pollution remediation.

Low temperature-resistant superhydrophobic and elastic cellulose aerogels derived from seaweed solid waste as efficient oil traps for oil/water separation

Aerogel has excellent application potential in adsorption, heat preservation, and other areas due to its typical advantages of low density and high porosity. However, there are several issues with the use of aerogel in oil/water separation, including weak mechanical qualities and challenges in eliminating organic contaminants at low temperature. Inspired by cellulose Iα, which has excellent performance at low temperature, this study used cellulose Iα nanofibers extracted from seaweed solid waste as the skeleton, through covalent cross-linked with ethylene imine polymer (PEI) and hydrophobic modification of 1, 4-phenyl diisocyanate (MDI), supplemented by freeze-drying technology to form three-dimensional sheet, and successfully obtained cellulose aerogels derived from seaweed solid waste (SWCA). The compression test shows that the maximum compressive stress of SWCA is 61 kPa, and the initial performance still maintains 82% after 40 cryogenic compression cycles. In addition, the contact angles of water and oil on the surface of the SWCA were 153° and 0°, respectively, and the stable hydrophobic time in simulated seawater is more than 3 h. By combining the elasticity and superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity, the SWCA with an oil absorption capacity of up to 11-30 times its mass, might be utilized repeatedly for the separation of an oil/water mixture.

Recent Advances in Nanocellulose Aerogels for Efficient Heavy Metal and Dye Removal

Water pollution is a significant environmental issue that has emerged because of industrial and economic growth. Human activities such as industrial, agricultural, and technological practices have increased the levels of pollutants in the environment, causing harm to both the environment and public health. Dyes and heavy metals are major contributors to water pollution. Organic dyes are a major concern because of their stability in water and their potential to absorb sunlight, increasing the temperature and disrupting the ecological balance. The presence of heavy metals in the production of textile dyes adds to the toxicity of the wastewater. Heavy metals are a global issue that can harm both human health and the environment and are mainly caused by urbanization and industrialization. To address this issue, researchers have focused on developing effective water treatment procedures, including adsorption, precipitation, and filtration. Among these methods, adsorption is a simple, efficient, and cheap method for removing organic dyes from water. Aerogels have shown potential as a promising adsorbent material because of their low density, high porosity, high surface area, low thermal and electrical conductivity, and ability to respond to external stimuli. Biomaterials such as cellulose, starch, chitosan, chitin, carrageenan, and graphene have been extensively studied for the production of sustainable aerogels for water treatment. Cellulose, which is abundant in nature, has received significant attention in recent years. This review highlights the potential of cellulose-based aerogels as a sustainable and efficient material for removing dyes and heavy metals from water during the treatment process.

A Review of Graphene-Based Materials/Polymer Composite Aerogels

The fabrication of composite materials is an effective way to improve the performance of a single material and expand its application range. In recent years, graphene-based materials/polymer composite aerogels have become a hot research field for preparing high-performance composites due to their special synergistic effects in mechanical and functional properties. In this paper, the preparation methods, structures, interactions, properties, and applications of graphene-based materials/polymer composite aerogels are discussed, and their development trend is projected. This paper aims to arouse extensive research interests in multidisciplinary fields and provide guidance for the rational design of advanced aerogel materials, which could then encourage efforts to use these new kinds of advanced materials in basic research and commercial applications.

Emerging Trends in Nanotechnology: Aerogel-Based Materials for Biomedical Applications

At present, aerogel is one of the most interesting materials globally. The network of aerogel consists of pores with nanometer widths, which leads to a variety of functional properties and broad applications. Aerogel is categorized as inorganic, organic, carbon, and biopolymers, and can be modified by the addition of advanced materials and nanofillers. Herein, this review critically discusses the basic preparation of aerogel from the sol-gel reaction with derivation and modification of a standard method to produce various aerogels for diverse functionalities. In addition, the biocompatibility of various types of aerogels were elaborated. Then, biomedical applications of aerogel were focused on this review as a drug delivery carrier, wound healing agent, antioxidant, anti-toxicity, bone regenerative, cartilage tissue activities and in dental fields. The clinical status of aerogel in the biomedical sector is shown to be similarly far from adequate. Moreover, due to their remarkable properties, aerogels are found to be preferably used as tissue scaffolds and drug delivery systems. The advanced studies in areas including self-healing, additive manufacturing (AM) technology, toxicity, and fluorescent-based aerogel are crucially important and are further addressed.

Ag Aerogel-Supported Single-Atom Hg Nanozyme Enables Efficient SERS Monitoring of Enhanced Oxidase-Like Catalysis

In this work, three-dimensional (3D) Ag aerogel-supported Hg single-atom catalysts (SACs) were explored as an efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to monitor the enhanced oxidase-like reaction. The influence of the concentrations of Hg²⁺ to prepare 3D Hg/Ag aerogel networks on their SERS properties to monitor the oxidase-like reaction has been investigated, and a specific enhancement with an optimized addition of Hg²⁺ has been achieved. The formation of Ag-supported Hg SACs with the optimized Hg²⁺ addition was identified from a high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) image and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement at an atomic level. This is the first discovery of Hg SACs for enzyme-like reaction applications inferred by SERS techniques. And density functional theory (DFT) was used to further reveal the oxidase-like catalytic mechanism of Hg/Ag SACs. This study provides a mild synthetic strategy to fabricate Ag aerogel-supported Hg single atoms to display promising prospects in various catalytic fields.

Nonenzymatic Sweat Wearable Uric Acid Sensor Based on N-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide/Au Dual Aerogels

Sweat wearable sensors enable noninvasive and real-time metabolite monitoring in human health management but lack accuracy and wearable applicability. The rational design of sensing electrode materials will be critical yet challenging. Herein, we report a dual aerogel-based nonenzymatic wearable sensor for the sensitive and selective detection of uric acid (UA) in human sweat. The three-dimensional porous dual-structural aerogels composed of Au nanowires and N-doped graphene nanosheets (noted as N-rGO/Au DAs) provide a large active surface, abundant access to the target, rapid electron transfer pathways, and a high intrinsic activity. Thus, a direct UA electro-oxidation is demonstrated at the N-rGO/Au DAs with a much higher activity than those at the individual gels (i.e., Au and N-rGO). Moreover, the resulting sensing chip displays high performance with a good anti-interfering ability, long-term stability, and excellent flexibility toward the UA detection. With the assistance of a wireless circuit, a wearable sensor is successfully applied in the real-time UA monitoring on human skin. The obtained result is comparable to that evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography. This dual aerogel-based nonenzymatic biosensing platform not only holds considerable promise for the reliable sweat metabolite monitoring but also opens an avenue for metal-based aerogels as flexible electrodes in wearable sensing.

Biopolymeric Fibrous Aerogels: The Sustainable Alternative for Water Remediation

The increment in water pollution due to the massive development in the industrial sector is a worldwide concern due to its impact on the environment and human health. Therefore, the development of new and sustainable alternatives for water remediation is needed. In this context, aerogels present high porosity, low density, and a remarkable adsorption capacity, making them candidates for remediation applications demonstrating high efficiency in removing pollutants from the air, soil, and water. Specifically, polymer-based aerogels could be modified in their high surface area to integrate functional groups, decrease their hydrophilicity, or increase their lipophilicity, among other variations, expanding and enhancing their efficiency as adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants in water. The aerogels based on natural polymers such as cellulose, chitosan, or alginate processed by different techniques presented high adsorption capacities, efficacy in oil/water separation and dye removal, and excellent recyclability after several cycles. Although there are different reviews based on aerogels, this work gives an overview of just the natural biopolymers employed to elaborate aerogels as an eco-friendly and renewable alternative. In addition, here we show the synthesis methods and applications in water cleaning from pollutants such as dyes, oil, and pharmaceuticals, providing novel information for the future development of biopolymeric-based aerogel.

Ultralight, Elastic, Hybrid Aerogel for Flexible/Wearable Piezoresistive Sensor and Solid-Solid/Gas-Solid Coupled Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Aerogels have been attracting wide attentions in flexible/wearable electronics because of their light weight, excellent flexibility, and electrical conductivity. However, multifunctional aerogel-based flexible/wearable electronics for human physiological/motion monitoring, and energy harvest/supply for mobile electronics, have been seldom reported yet. In this study, a kind of hybrid aerogel (GO/CNT HA) based on graphene oxide (GO) and carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CMWCNTs) is prepared which can not only used as piezoresistive sensors for human motion and physiological signal detections, but also as high performance triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) coupled with both solid-solid and gas-solid contact electrifications (CE). The repeatedly loading-unloading tests with 20 000 cycles exhibit its high and ultrastable piezoresistive sensor performances. Moreover, when the obtained aerogel is used as the electrode of a TENG, high electric output performance is produced due to the synergistic effect of solid-solid, and gas-solid interface CEs (3D electrification: solid-solid interface CE between the two solid electrification layers; gas-solid interface CE between the inner surface of GO/CNT HA and the air filled in the aerogel pores). This kind of aerogel promises good applications for human physiological/motion monitoring and energy harvest/supply in flexible/wearable electronics such as piezoresistive sensors and flexible TENG.

Biomolecule-Based Optical Metamaterials: Design and Applications

Metamaterials are broadly defined as artificial, electromagnetically homogeneous structures that exhibit unusual physical properties that are not present in nature. They possess extraordinary capabilities to bend electromagnetic waves. Their size, shape and composition can be engineered to modify their characteristics, such as iridescence, color shift, absorbance at different wavelengths, etc., and harness them as biosensors. Metamaterial construction from biological sources such as carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids represents a low-cost alternative, rendering high quantities and yields. In addition, the malleability of these biomaterials makes it possible to fabricate an endless number of structured materials such as composited nanoparticles, biofilms, nanofibers, quantum dots, and many others, with very specific, invaluable and tremendously useful optical characteristics. The intrinsic characteristics observed in biomaterials make them suitable for biomedical applications. This review addresses the optical characteristics of metamaterials obtained from the major macromolecules found in nature: carbohydrates, proteins and DNA, highlighting their biosensor field use, and pointing out their physical properties and production paths.

Aerogels Meet Phase Change Materials: Fundamentals, Advances, and Beyond

Benefiting from the inherent properties of ultralight weight, ultrahigh porosity, ultrahigh specific surface area, adjustable thermal/electrical conductivities, and mechanical flexibility, aerogels are considered ideal supporting alternatives to efficiently encapsulate phase change materials (PCMs) and rationalize phase transformation behaviors. The marriage of versatile aerogels and PCMs is a milestone in pioneering advanced multifunctional composite PCMs. Emerging aerogel-based composite PCMs with high energy storage density are accepted as a cutting-edge thermal energy storage (TES) concept, enabling advanced functionality of PCMs. Considering the lack of a timely and comprehensive review on aerogel-based composite PCMs, herein, we systematically retrospect the state-of-the-art advances of versatile aerogels for high-performance and multifunctional composite PCMs, with particular emphasis on advanced multiple functions, such as acoustic-thermal and solar-thermal-electricity energy conversion strategies, mechanical flexibility, flame retardancy, shape memory, intelligent grippers, and thermal infrared stealth. Emphasis is also given to the versatile roles of different aerogels in composite PCMs and the relationships between their architectures and thermophysical properties. This review also showcases the discovery of an interdisciplinary research field combining aerogels and 3D printing technology, which will contribute to pioneering cutting-edge PCMs. This review aims to arouse wider research interests among interdisciplinary fields and provide insightful guidance for the rational design of advanced multifunctional aerogel-based composite PCMs, thus facilitating the significant breakthroughs in both fundamental research and commercial applications.

Interfacially Locked Metal Aerogel Inside Porous Polymer Composite for Sensitive and Durable Flexible Piezoresistive Sensors

Flexible pressure sensors play significant roles in wearable devices, electronic skins, and human-machine interface (HMI). However, it remains challenging to develop flexible piezoresistive sensors with outstanding comprehensive performances, especially with excellent long-term durability. Herein, a facile "interfacial locking strategy" has been developed to fabricate metal aerogel-based pressure sensors with excellent sensitivity and prominent stability. The strategy broke the bottleneck of the intrinsically poor mechanical properties of metal aerogels by grafting them on highly elastic melamine sponge with the help of a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer as the interface-reinforcing media. The hierarchically porous conductive structure of the ensemble offered the as-prepared flexible piezoresistive sensor with a sensitivity as high as 12 kPa^-1 , a response time as fast as 85 ms, and a prominent durability over 23 000 compression cycles. The excellent comprehensive performance enables the successful application of the flexible piezoresistive sensor as two-dimensional (2D) array device as well as three-dimensional (3D) force-detecting device for real-time monitoring of HMI activities.

Bio-aerogels: Fabrication, properties and food applications

Traditional inorganic aerogels sustainability, biodegradability, and environmental safety concerns have driven researchers to find their safe green alternatives. Recently, interest in the application of bio-aerogels has rapidly increased in the food industry due to their unique characteristics such as high specific surface area and porosity, ultralow density, tunable pore size and morphology, and superior properties (physicochemical, mechanical, and functional). Bio-aerogels, a special category of highly porous unique materials, fabricated by the sol-gel method followed by drying processes, comprising three-dimensional networks of interconnected biopolymers (e.g., polysaccharides and proteins) with numerous air-filled pores. The production of bio-aerogels begins with the formation of a homogeneously dispersed precursor solution, followed by gelation and wet gel drying procedures by employing special drying techniques including atmospheric-, freeze-, and supercritical drying. Due to their special properties, bio-aerogels have emerged as sustainable biomaterial for many industrial applications, i.e., encapsulation and controlled delivery, active packaging, heavy metals separation, water and air filtration, oleogels, and biosensors. Bio-aerogels are low-cost, biocompatible, and biodegradable sustainable material that can be used in improving the processing, storage, transportation, and bioavailability of food additives, functional ingredients, and bioactive substances for their health benefits with enhanced shelf-life.

Aerogels for Biomedical, Energy and Sensing Applications

The term aerogel is used for unique solid-state structures composed of three-dimensional (3D) interconnected networks filled with a huge amount of air. These air-filled pores enhance the physicochemical properties and the structural characteristics in macroscale as well as integrate typical characteristics of aerogels, e.g., low density, high porosity and some specific properties of their constituents. These characteristics equip aerogels for highly sensitive and highly selective sensing and energy materials, e.g., biosensors, gas sensors, pressure and strain sensors, supercapacitors, catalysts and ion batteries, etc. In recent years, considerable research efforts are devoted towards the applications of aerogels and promising results have been achieved and reported. In this thematic issue, ground-breaking and recent advances in the field of biomedical, energy and sensing are presented and discussed in detail. In addition, some other perspectives and recent challenges for the synthesis of high performance and low-cost aerogels and their applications are also summarized.

Plasmon-induced transparency sensor for detection of minuscule refractive index changes in ultra-low index materials

Detection of low-index materials such as aerogels and also detection of refractive index variations in these materials is still a challenging task. Here, a high figure of merit (FOM) sensor based on plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) is proposed for the detection of aerogel refractive index changes. In the proposed PIT sensor, the transparency window in an opaque region arises from the coupling between surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode and planar waveguide mode. By comprising sub-wavelength grating (SWG) in the planar waveguide region, the maximum of the electric field of waveguide occurs in a low index media. This facilitates detection of the aerogels when they are used as the low index material (sensing material). Application of the subwavelength grating waveguide also improves the sensitivity of the sensor by a factor of six compared to a conventional structure with a homogenous waveguide. The proposed structure has a quality factor of Q ≥ 1800, and a reflection of 86%, and can detect the refractive index changes as low as Δn = 0.002 (around n = 1.0). The lineshape, Q-factor, and resonant wavelength of the transparency spectrum can be controlled by tailoring the structural parameters. Our work also has potential application in switching, filtering, and spectral shaping.

A Metallic Ion-Induced Self-Assembly Enabling Nanowire-Based Aerogels

The controlled assembly of nanowires is one of the key challenges in the development of a range of functional 3D aerogels with unique physicochemical properties for practical applications. However, the deep understanding of the dynamic assemble process for fabricating nanowire aerogels remains elusive. Herein, a facile strategy is presented for the metallic ion-induced assembly of nanowires into macroscopic aerogels via a solution-based process. This method enables the interconnecting between polymer-decorated nanowires via metallic coordination, resulting in plenty of nanowire bundles with the same orientation. Besides, the coordinated binding strength of nanowires with different metallic ions is also discussed. The assembly mechanism that the metallic ions induced dynamic behavior of nanowires is revealed via molecular dynamics theoretical evaluation. These findings benefit for constructing nanowire-based aerogels with unique structural features and multi-function, which pave new opportunities for other material systems.

Integrating Highly Porous and Flexible Au Hydrogels with Soft-MEMS Technologies for High-Performance Wearable Biosensing

Wearable biosensors for real-time and non-invasive detection of biomarkers are of importance in early diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Herein, a high-performance wearable biosensing platform was proposed by combining a three-dimensional hierarchical porous Au hydrogel-enzyme electrode with high biocompatibility, activity, and flexibility and soft-MEMS technologies with high precision and capability of mass production. Using glucose oxidase as the model enzyme, the glucose sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 10.51 μA mM^-1 cm^-2, a long durability over 15 days, and a good selectivity. Under the mechanical deformation (0 to 90°), it is able to maintain an almost constant performance with a low deviation of <1.84%. With the assistance of a wireless or a Bluetooth module, this wearable sensing platform achieves real-time and non-invasive glucose monitoring on human skins. Similarly, continuous lactic acid monitoring was also realized with lactate oxidase immobilized on the same sensing platform, further verifying the universality of this sensing platform. Therefore, our work holds promise to provide a universal, high-performance wearable biosensing platform for various biomarkers in sweat and reliable diagnostic information for health management.

Zirconia aerogels for thermal management: Review of synthesis, processing, and properties information architecture

Zirconia aerogels are porous nanomaterials with high specific surface areas and low thermal conductivities that are suitable for a wide range of functions. The applications of zirconia aerogels include numerous uses in thermal management systems that are specifically beneficial in aeronautics and aerospace systems. This review seeks to detail the synthesis, processing, and characterization of these unique materials. However, the many distinctive synthesis pathways and processing conditions of zirconia aerogels can make the optimization of these materials difficult, potentially inhibiting further development. Independent variables in the synthesis process alone include zirconium precursor, rare earth stabilizer, solvent system, gelation agent, and surfactant templating agent. If only two distinct options were available for each synthetic variable, there would be up to 32 different synthetic pathways; if there were three options for each variable, 243 different synthetic pathways would be possible. Apart from the gel synthesis, processing conditions, including drying method, drying temperature, drying solvent, and sintering temperature, as well as various techniques used to characterize aerogels, need to be considered. To mitigate the sheer volume of synthetic parameters, this review uses an architected information structure to contemplate approximately 600 aerogel materials, along with the synthesis and processing conditions that make each material unique. By utilizing this information structure, containing over 10,000 relationships amongst 3,800 nodes, the connection between specific properties of zirconia aerogels and the pathways used to produce them can be more easily visualized, leading to a more effective understanding of the many variables that are used in the synthesis and processing of these materials. This review seeks to utilize data science in a way that can elucidate structure-property relationships in colloidal chemistry, providing a more efficient way to evaluate the synthesis and processing of materials with high experimental dimensionality.

Recent Progress in Development of Wearable Pressure Sensors Derived from Biological Materials

This review summarizes recent progress in the use of biological materials (biomaterials) in wearable pressure sensors. Biomaterials are abundant, sustainable, biocompatible, and biodegradable. Especially, many have sophisticated hierarchical structure and biological characteristics, which are attractive candidates for facile and ecologically-benign fabrication of wearable pressure sensors that are biocompatible, biodegradable, and highly sensitivity. The biomaterials and structures that use them in wearable pressure sensors that exploit sensing mechanisms such as piezoelectric, triboelectric, piezoresistive and capacitive effects are present. Finally, remaining impediments are discussed to use of biomaterials in wearable pressure sensors.

Freeze-Casting with 3D-Printed Templates Creates Anisotropic Microchannels and Patterned Macrochannels within Biomimetic Nanofiber Aerogels for Rapid Cellular Infiltration

A new approach is described for fabricating 3D poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gelatin (1:1) nanofiber aerogels with patterned macrochannels and anisotropic microchannels by freeze-casting with 3D-printed sacrificial templates. Single layer or multiple layers of macrochannels are formed through an inverse replica of 3D-printed templates. Aligned microchannels formed by partially anisotropic freezing act as interconnected pores between templated macrochannels. The resulting macro-/microchannels within nanofiber aerogels significantly increase preosteoblast infiltration in vitro. The conjugation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-mimicking QK peptide to PCL/gelatin/gelatin methacryloyl (1:0.5:0.5) nanofiber aerogels with patterned macrochannels promotes the formation of a microvascular network of seeded human microvascular endothelial cells. Moreover, nanofiber aerogels with patterned macrochannels and anisotropic microchannels show significantly enhanced cellular infiltration rates and host tissue integration compared to aerogels without macrochannels following subcutaneous implantation in rats. Taken together, this novel class of nanofiber aerogels holds great potential in biomedical applications including tissue repair and regeneration, wound healing, and 3D tissue/disease modeling.

Structural Diversity in Cryoaerogel Synthesis

Different techniques that enable the selective microstructure design of aerogels without the use of additives are presented. For this, aerogels were prepared from platinum nanoparticle solutions using the cryoaerogelation method, and respective impacts of different freezing times, freezing media, and freezing temperatures were investigated with electron microscopy as well as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The use of lower freezing temperatures, freezing media with higher heat conductivities, and longer freezing periods led to extremely different network structures with enhanced stability. In detail, materials were created in the shape of lamellar, cellular, and dendritic networks. So far, without changing the building blocks, it was not possible to create the selective morphologies of resulting aerogels in cryoaerogelation. Now, these additive-free approaches enable targeted structuring and will open up new opportunities in the future cryoaerogel design.

Recent Progress on Nanocellulose Aerogels: Preparation, Modification, Composite Fabrication, Applications

The rapid development of modern industry and excessive consumption of petroleum-based polymers have triggered a double crisis presenting a shortage of nonrenewable resources and environmental pollution. However, this has provided an opportunity to stimulate researchers to harness native biobased materials for novel advanced materials and applications. Nanocellulose-based aerogels, using abundant and sustainable cellulose as raw material, present a third-generation of aerogels that combine traditional aerogels with high porosity and large specific surface area, as well as the excellent properties of cellulose itself. Currently, nanocellulose aerogels provide a highly attention-catching platform for a wide range of functional applications in various fields, e.g., adsorption, separation, energy storage, thermal insulation, electromagnetic interference shielding, and biomedical applications. Here, the preparation methods, modification strategies, composite fabrications, and further applications of nanocellulose aerogels are summarized, with additional discussions regarding the prospects and potential challenges in future development.

Aerogels in drug delivery: From design to application

Aerogels are the lightest processed solid materials on Earth and with the largest empty volume fraction in their structure. Composition versatility, modularity, and feasibility of industrial scale manufacturing are behind the fast emergence of aerogels in the drug delivery field. Compared to other 3D materials, the high porosity (interconnected mesopores) and high specific surface area of aerogels may allow faster loading of small-molecule drugs, less constrained access to inner regions of the matrix, and more efficient interactions of the biological milieu with the polymer matrix. Processing in supercritical CO₂ medium for both aerogel production (drying) and drug loading (impregnation) has remarkable advantages such as absence of an oxidizing environment, clean manufacture, and easiness for the scale-up under good manufacturing practices. The aerogel solid skeleton dictates the chemical affinity to the different drugs, which in turn determines the loading efficiency and the release pattern. Aerogels can be used to increase the solubility of BCS Class II and IV drugs because the drug can be deposited in amorphous state onto the large surface area of the skeleton, which facilitates a rapid contact with the body fluids, dissolution, and release. Conversely, tuning the aerogel structure by functionalization with drug-binding moieties or stimuli-responsive components, application of coatings and incorporation of drug-loaded aerogels into other matrices may enable site-specific, stimuli-responsive, or prolonged drug release. The present review deals with last decade advances in aerogels for drug delivery. An special focus is paid first on the loading efficiency of active ingredients and release kinetics under biorelevant conditions. Subsequent sections deal with aerogels intended to address specific therapeutic demands. In addition to oral delivery, the physical properties of the aerogels appear to be very advantageous for mucosal administration routes, such as pulmonary, nasal, or transdermal. A specific section devoted to recent achievements in gene therapy and theranostics is also included. In the last section, scale up strategies and life cycle assessment are comprehensively addressed.

Printed aerogels: chemistry, processing, and applications

As an extraordinarily lightweight and porous functional nanomaterial family, aerogels have attracted considerable interest in academia and industry in recent decades. Despite the application scopes, the modest mechanical durability of aerogels makes their processing and operation challenging, in particular, for situations demanding intricate physical structures. "Bottom-up" additive manufacturing technology has the potential to address this drawback. Indeed, since the first report of 3D printed aerogels in 2015, a new interdisciplinary research area combining aerogel and printing technology has emerged to push the boundaries of structure and performance, further broadening their application scope. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art of printed aerogels and presents a comprehensive view of their developments in the past 5 years, and highlights the key near- and mid-term challenges.

Curcumin-loaded metal oxide aerogels: supercritical drying and stability

Curcumin, known as a potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, has major limitations for its therapeutic use because of its lack of water solubility and relatively low bioavailability. We report for the first time the loading of different metal oxide aerogels with curcumin. The aerogels were prepared via the sol–gel process and dried under supercritical conditions. Mixing curcumin with the metal precursors prior to the formation of the solid network ensures maximum entrapment. The curcumin–network interactions stabilize the organic moiety and create hybrid aerogels as potential vehicles for curcumin in various media. The aerogels were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy to confirm their hybrid nature. The stability study by fluorescence spectroscopy revealed three distinct behaviors depending on the nature of the metal oxide: (i) a minor interaction between curcumin and the solid network slightly affecting the microenvironment; (ii) a quenching phenomenon when iron is present explained by a coordination between the iron ions and curcumin; and (iii) a strong complexation of the metal ions with curcumin after gelation.

Metal oxide aerogels are investigated as encapsulation media for curcumin, a polyphenol having potential uses in medicine, probing, and sensing.

The lightest solid meets the lightest gas: an overview of carbon aerogels and their composites for hydrogen related applications

Hydrogen, a renewable and recyclable energy, has been regarded as the best solution for global energy supply in the 21^st century. Hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and hydrogen sensing are three most important aspects for hydrogen economy. Interestingly, the lightest solid, carbon aerogels (CAs), has found wide applications in these aspects due to its unique characteristics including large specific surface area, hierarchical porous structure, high electrical conductivity, superb chemical stability, and low fabrication cost. Herein, various fabrication strategies of CAs are presented, and their applications in the three most important aspects are comprehensively reviewed. In addition, the challenges and prospects are also discussed. In the light of the recent progress in CAs for hydrogen-related applications, this review provides a comprehensive assessment on materials selection, synthesis, hydrogen adsorption characteristics of CAs and catalytic activity of CA-supported nanocatalysts, offering a strategic guide to build a close connection between CAs and hydrogen economy.

Hybrid Aerogel Nanocomposite of Dendritic Colloidal Silica and Hairy Nanocellulose: an Effective Dye Adsorbent

In this study, a new type of silica-cellulose hybrid aerogel was synthesized through a green and facile chemical cross-linking process. In a first step, dendritic fibrous nanostructured (colloidal) silica particles (DFNS) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal technique. Then, the surface of DFNS particles was functionalized with amine groups using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to produce DFNS-NH₂. In a second step, bifunctional hairy nanocellulose (BHNC) particles were functionalized with both aldehyde and carboxylic groups. The aldehyde groups of BHNC and the amine groups of DFNS-NH₂ chemically reacted through a Schiff base reaction to form a hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite. Therefore, no external cross-linker is required in the synthesis. This hybrid aerogel is very lightweight and highly porous with a density of 0.107 g mL^-1 and a porosity of 93.0 ± 0.4%. It has a large surface area of 350 m² g^-1, a large pore volume of 0.23 cm³ g^-1, and a small pore size of 3.9 nm. The developed aerogel contains both positively and negatively charged functional groups and is a highly efficient substrate for dye adsorption from water, for both cationic and anionic organic dyes. These aerogels were found to have an outstanding adsorption capacity toward methylene blue (MB) as a cationic dye and methyl orange (MO) as an anionic dye. The results show that the aerogels can adsorb MB and MO with a capacity of 270 and 300 mg dye/g adsorbent, respectively.
