Differential patterns of functional connectivity in tremor dominant Parkinson's disease and essential tremor plus

Tremor dominant Parkinson's disease (TDPD) and essential tremor plus (ETP) syndrome are commonly encountered tremor dominant neurological disorders. Although the basal ganglia thalamocortical (BGTC) and cerebello thalamocortical (CTC) networks are implicated in tremorogenesis, the extent of functional connectivity alterations across disorders is uncertain. This study aims to evaluate functional connectivity of the BGTC and CTC in TDPD and ETP. Resting state functional MRI was acquired for 25 patients with TDPD, ETP and 22 healthy controls (HC). Following pre-processing and denoising, seed-to-voxel based connectivity was carried out at FDR < 0.05 using ROIs belonging to the BGTC and CTC. Fahn-Tolosa-Marin tremor rating scale (FTMRS) was correlated with the average connectivity values at FDR < 0.05. Compared to HC, TDPD showed decreased connectivity between cerebellum and pre, post central gyrus. While, ETP showed decreased connectivity between pallidum and occipital cortex, precuneus, cuneus compared to HC. In comparison to ETP, TDPD showed increased connectivity between precentral gyrus, pallidum, SNc with the default mode network (DMN), and decreased connectivity between cerebellum with superior, middle frontal gyrus was observed. Tremor severity positively correlated with connectivity between SNc and DMN in TDPD, and negatively correlated with pallidal connectivity in ETP. Pattern of BGTC, CTC involvement is differential i.e., higher connectivity of the BGTC nodes in TDPD, and higher connectivity of cerebellar nodes in ETP. The interesting observation of pallidal involvement in ETP suggests the role of BGTC in the pathogenesis of ETP, and indicated similarities in concepts of tremor genesis in TDPD and ETP.

Circadian functional changes of pain-processing brainstem nuclei and implications for cluster headache: A 7 Tesla imaging study

BACKGROUND

Pain thresholds and primary headaches, including cluster headache attacks, have circadian rhythmicity. Thus, they might share a common neuronal mechanism.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to elucidate how the modulation of nociceptive input in the brainstem changes from noon to midnight. Insights into the mechanism of these fluctuations could allow for new hypotheses about the pathophysiology of cluster headache.

METHODS

This repeated measure observational study was conducted at the University Hospital Zurich from December 2019 to November 2022. Healthy adults between 18 and 85 years of age were eligible. All participants were examined at noon and midnight. We tested the pain threshold on both sides of the foreheads with quantitative sensory testing, assessed tiredness levels, and obtained high-field (7 Tesla) and high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at each visit. Functional connectivity was assessed at the two visits by performing a region-of-interest analysis. We defined nuclei in the brainstem implicated in processing nociceptive input as well as the thalamus and suprachiasmatic nucleus as the region-of-interest.

RESULTS

Ten people were enrolled, and seven participants were included. First, we did not find statistically significant differences between noon and midnight of A-delta-mediated pain thresholds (median mechanical pain threshold at noon: left 9.2, right 9.2; at night: left 6.5, right 6.1). Second, after correction for a false discovery rate, we found changes in the mechanical pain sensitivity to have a statistically significant effect on changes in the functional connectivity between the left parabrachial nucleus and the suprachiasmatic nucleus (T = -40.79).

CONCLUSION

The MRI data analysis suggested that brain stem nuclei and the hypothalamus modulate A-delta-mediated pain perception; however, these changes in pain perception did not lead to statistically significantly differing pain thresholds between noon and midnight. Hence, our findings shed doubt on our hypothesis that the physiologic circadian rhythmicity of pain thresholds could drive the circadian rhythmicity of cluster headache attacks.

Transcranial focused ultrasound to the posterior cingulate cortex modulates default mode network and subjective experience: an fMRI pilot study

Background

Transcranial focused ultrasound (TFUS) is an emerging neuromodulation tool for temporarily altering brain activity and probing network functioning. The effects of TFUS on the default mode network (DMN) are unknown.

Objective

The study examined the effects of transcranial focused ultrasound (TFUS) on the functional connectivity of the default mode network (DMN), specifically by targeting the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). Additionally, we investigated the subjective effects of TFUS on mood, mindfulness, and self-related processing.

Methods

The study employed a randomized, single-blind design involving 30 healthy subjects. Participants were randomly assigned to either the active TFUS group or the sham TFUS group. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans were conducted before and after the TFUS application. To measure subjective effects, the Toronto Mindfulness Scale, the Visual Analog Mood Scale, and the Amsterdam Resting State Questionnaire were administered at baseline and 30 min after sonication. The Self Scale and an unstructured interview were also administered 30 min after sonication.

Results

The active TFUS group exhibited significant reductions in functional connectivity along the midline of the DMN, while the sham TFUS group showed no changes. The active TFUS group demonstrated increased state mindfulness, reduced Global Vigor, and temporary alterations in the sense of ego, sense of time, and recollection of memories. The sham TFUS group showed an increase in state mindfulness, too, with no other subjective effects.

Conclusions

TFUS targeted at the PCC can alter DMN connectivity and cause changes in subjective experience. These findings support the potential of TFUS to serve both as a research tool and as a potential therapeutic intervention.

Aberrant Functional Connectivity of the Salience Network in Adult Patients with Tic Disorders: A Resting-State fMRI Study

Tic disorders (TD) are characterized by the presence of motor and/or vocal tics. Common neurophysiological frameworks suggest dysregulations of the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) brain circuit that controls movement execution. Besides common tics, there are other "non-tic" symptoms that are primarily related to sensory perception, sensorimotor integration, attention, and social cognition. The existence of these symptoms, the sensory tic triggers, and the modifying effect of attention and cognitive control mechanisms on tics may indicate the salience network's (SN) involvement in the neurophysiology of TD. Resting-state functional MRI measurements were performed in 26 participants with TD and 25 healthy controls (HC). The group differences in resting-state functional connectivity patterns were measured based on seed-to-voxel connectivity analyses. Compared to HC, patients with TD exhibited altered connectivity between the core regions of the SN (insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and temporoparietal junction) and sensory, associative, and motor-related cortices. Furthermore, connectivity changes were observed in relation to the severity of tics in the TD group. The SN, particularly the insula, is likely to be an important site of dysregulation in TD. Our results provide evidence for large-scale neural deviations in TD beyond the CSTC pathologies. These findings may be relevant for developing treatment targets.

The interaction effect of high social support and resilience on functional connectivity using seed-based resting-state assessed by 7-Tesla ultra-high field MRI

Recent resilience research has increasingly emphasized the importance of focusing on investigating the protective factors in mentally healthy populations, complementing the traditional focus on psychopathology. Social support has emerged as a crucial element within the complex interplay of individual and socio-environmental factors that shape resilience. However, the neural underpinnings of the relationship between social support and resilience, particularly in healthy subjects, remain largely unexplored. With advances in neuroimaging techniques, such as ultra-high field MRI at 7T and beyond, researchers can more effectively investigate the neural mechanisms underlying these factors. Thus, our study employed ultra-high field rs-fMRI to explore how social support moderates the relationship between psychological resilience and functional connectivity in a healthy cohort. We hypothesized that enhanced social support would amplify resilience-associated connectivity within neural circuits essential for emotional regulation, cognitive processing, and adaptive problem-solving, signifying a synergistic interaction where strong social networks bolster the neural underpinnings of resilience. (n = 30). Through seed-based functional connectivity analyses and interaction analysis, we aimed to uncover the neural correlates at the interplay of social support and resilience. Our findings indicate that perceived social support significantly (p<0.001) alters functional connectivity in the right and left FP, PCC, and left hippocampus, affirming the pivotal roles of these regions in the brain's resilience network. Moreover, we identified significant moderation effects of social support across various brain regions, each showing unique connectivity patterns. Specifically, the right FP demonstrated a significant interaction effect where high social support levels were linked to increased connectivity with regions involved in socio-cognitive processing, while low social support showed opposite effects. Similar patterns by social support levels were observed in the left FP, with connectivity changes in clusters associated with emotional regulation and cognitive functions. The PCC's connectivity was distinctly influenced by support levels, elucidating its role in emotional and social cognition. Interestingly, the connectivity of the left hippocampus was not significantly impacted by social support levels, indicating a unique pattern within this region. These insights highlight the importance of high social support levels in enhancing the neural foundations of resilience and fostering adaptive neurological responses to environmental challenges.

Detecting language network alterations in mild cognitive impairment using task-based fMRI and resting-state fMRI: A comparative study

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to investigate the functional changes associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using independent component analysis (ICA) with the word generation task functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and resting-state fMRI.

METHODS

In this study 17 patients with MCI and age and education-matched 17 healthy individuals as control group are investigated. All participants underwent resting-state fMRI and task-based fMRI while performing the word generation task. ICA was used to identify the appropriate independent components (ICs) and their associated networks. The Dice Coefficient method was used to determine the relevance of the ICs to the networks of interest.

RESULTS

IC-14 was found relevant to language network in both resting-state and task-based fMRI, IC-4 to visual, and IC-28 to dorsal attention network (DAN) in word generation task-based fMRI by Sorento-Dice Coefficient. ICA showed increased activation in language network, which had a larger voxel size in resting-state functional MRI than word generation task-based fMRI in the bilateral lingual gyrus. Right temporo-occipital fusiform cortex, right hippocampus, and right thalamus were also activated in the task-based fMRI. Decreased activation was found in DAN and visual network MCI patients in word generation task-based fMRI.

CONCLUSION

Task-based fMRI and ICA are more sophisticated and reliable tools in evaluation cognitive impairments in language processing. Our findings support the neural mechanisms of the cognitive impairments in MCI.

Effect of positive social comparative feedback on the resting state connectivity of dopaminergic neural pathways: A preliminary investigation

Positive social comparative feedback is hypothesized to generate a dopamine response in the brain, similar to reward, by enhancing expectancies to support motor skill learning. However, no studies have utilized neuroimaging to examine this hypothesized dopaminergic mechanism. Therefore, the aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the effect of positive social comparative feedback on dopaminergic neural pathways measured by resting state connectivity. Thirty individuals practiced an implicit, motor sequence learning task and were assigned to groups that differed in feedback type. One group received feedback about their actual response time to complete the task (RT ONLY), while the other group received feedback about their response time with positive social comparison (RT + POS). Magnetic resonance imaging was acquired at the beginning and end of repetitive motor practice with feedback to measure practice-dependent changes in resting state brain connectivity. While both groups showed improvements in task performance and increases in performance expectancies, ventral tegmental area and the left nucleus accumbens (mesolimbic dopamine pathway) resting state connectivity increased in the RT + POS group but not in the RT ONLY group. Instead, the RT ONLY group showed increased connectivity between ventral tegmental area and primary motor cortex. Positive social comparative feedback during practice of a motor sequence task may induce a dopaminergic response in the brain along the mesolimbic pathway. However, given that absence of effects on expectancies and motor learning, more robust and individualized approaches may be needed to provide beneficial psychological and behavioral effects.

Can the neural representation of physical pain predict empathy for pain in others?

The question of whether physical pain and vicarious pain have some shared neural substrates is unresolved. Recent research has argued that physical and vicarious pain are represented by dissociable multivariate brain patterns by creating biomarkers for physical pain (Neurologic Pain Signature, NPS) and vicarious pain (Vicarious Pain Signature, VPS), respectively. In the current research, the NPS and two versions of the VPS were applied to three fMRI datasets (one new, two published) relating to vicarious pain which focused on between-subject differences in vicarious pain (Datasets 1 and 3) and within-subject manipulations of perspective taking (Dataset 2). Results show that (i) NPS can distinguish brain responses to images of pain vs no-pain and to a greater extent in vicarious pain responders who report experiencing pain when observing pain and (ii) neither version of the VPS mapped on to individual differences in vicarious pain and the two versions differed in their success in predicting vicarious pain overall. This study suggests that the NPS (created to detect physical pain) is, under some circumstances, sensitive to vicarious pain and there is significant variability in VPS measures (created to detect vicarious pain) to act as generalizable biomarkers of vicarious pain.

Resting-state functional connectivity and structural differences between smokers and healthy non-smokers

Previous studies have shown an association between cigarette use and altered resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in many large-scale networks, sometimes complemented by measures of cortical atrophy. In this study, we aimed to further explore the neural differences between smokers and healthy non-smokers through the integration of functional and structural analyses. Imaging data of fifty-two smokers and forty-five non-smokers were analyzed through an independent component analysis for group differences in rsFC. Smokers showed lower rsFC within the dorsal attention network (DAN) in the left superior and middle frontal gyrus and left superior division of the lateral occipital cortex compared to non-smokers; moreover, cigarette use was found to be associated with reduced grey matter volume in the left superior and middle frontal gyrus and right orbitofrontal cortex, partly overlapping with functional findings. Within smokers, daily cigarette consumption was positively associated with increased rsFC within the cerebellar network and the default mode network and decreased rsFC within the visual network and the salience network, while carbon monoxide level showed a positive association with increased rsFC within the sensorimotor network. Our results suggest that smoking negatively impacts rsFC within the DAN and that changes within this network might serve as a circuit-based biomarker for structural deficits.

Atypical language organization following perinatal infarctions of the left hemisphere is associated with structural changes in right-hemispheric grey matter

AIM

To assess how atypical language organization after early left-hemispheric brain lesions affects grey matter in the contralesional hemisphere.

METHOD

This was a cross-sectional study with between-group comparisons of 14 patients (six female, 8-26 years) with perinatal left-hemispheric brain lesions (two arterial ischemic strokes, 11 periventricular haemorrhagic infarctions, one without classification) and 14 typically developing age-matched controls (TDC) with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) documented left-hemispheric language organization (six female, 8-28 years). MRI data were analysed with SPM12, CAT12, and custom scripts. Language lateralization indices were determined by fMRI within a prefrontal mask and right-hemispheric grey matter group differences by voxel-based morphometry (VBM).

RESULTS

FMRI revealed left-dominance in seven patients with typical language organization (TYP) and right-dominance in seven patients with atypical language organization (ATYP) of 14 patients. VBM analysis of all patients versus controls showed grey matter reductions in the middle temporal gyrus of patients. A comparison between the two patient subgroups revealed an increase of grey matter in the middle frontal gyrus in the ATYP group. Voxel-based regression analysis confirmed that grey matter increases in the middle frontal gyrus were correlated with atypical language organization.

INTERPRETATION

Compatible with a non-specific lesion effect, we found areas of grey matter reduction in patients as compared to TDC. The grey matter increase in the middle frontal gyrus seems to reflect a specific compensatory effect in patients with atypical language organization.

WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS

Perinatal stroke leads to decreased grey matter in the contralesional hemisphere. Atypical language organization is associated with grey matter increases in contralesional language areas.

Investigating the effect of hippocampal sclerosis on parietal memory network

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to investigate differences in episodic memory networks between patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) due to hippocampal sclerosis and healthy controls, especially with regards to the parietal memory network (PMN), as well as their relation to neuropsychological memory performance after mesial temporal resection.

METHODS

28 healthy subjects as well as 21 patients with TLE (12 left, 9 right) were investigated using a spatial memory fMRI paradigm, which has been shown to activate the PMN. Regions of interest (ROI) were defined based on the results of the second-level analyses and activations within the predefined ROIs were compared across groups and correlated with postoperative verbal and nonverbal memory scores.

RESULTS

Healthy subjects showed activations within regions belonging to the dorsal visual stream and the PMN as well as the bilateral parahippocampal place area, the bilateral frontal eye field, and the bilateral middle frontal gyrus. Comparison between groups revealed that TLE patients activated significantly less in the left middle occipital gyrus and the right precuneus. The activation pattern in left TLE patients showed further reductions, mainly in areas belonging to the dorsal visual stream and the PMN within the left hemisphere. Activations within the left superior parietal lobulus, bilateral inferior parietal lobulus, bilateral middle temporal gyrus, left precuneus, left frontal eye field, and left middle frontal gyrus correlated significantly with postoperative verbal memory scores, and activations within the left superior parietal lobulus, left inferior parietal lobulus, left middle temporal gyrus, and left precuneus correlated significantly with higher performance in postoperative nonverbal memory scores.

SIGNIFICANCE

The PMN is involved in episodic memory encoding. Higher activations in areas belonging to the PMN and the dorsal visual stream, especially within the left hemisphere, before amygdalohippocampectomy may result in higher postoperative memory scores.

PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY

This study aims to investigate the effects of epilepsy due to hippocampal sclerosis, i.e. scarring in the temporal lobe, on memory networks in the brain. We discovered that especially patients with left-sided hippocampal sclerosis show reduced brain activations in visual areas and memory networks within the left hemisphere of the brain during orientation in space. Importantly, higher activations within these areas may result in better memory after epilepsy surgery.

Functional connectivity characteristics of the brain network involved in prickle perception of single fiber stimulation

BACKGROUND

The complex network connections, information transmission and organization play key roles in brain cognition on sensory stimulation. Previous studies showed that several brain regions of somatosensory, motor, emotional, cognitive, etc. are linked to fabric-evoked prickle. But the functional connectivity characteristics of the brain network involved in prickle perception is still unclear.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In the present study, resting state fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) with functional connectivity analysis was adopted to build the initial brain functional network, and task fMRI with psychophysiological interaction analysis was employed to investigate modulation features of prickling task to functional connections in the brain network.

RESULTS

The results showed that, in resting state, six groups or sub-networks can be identified in the prickle network, and when the subjects performed the prickling task, functional connectivity strength between some seed regions (e.g., somatosensory regions and precuneus, emotional regions and the prefrontal cortex, etc.) in the network increased.

CONCLUSION

Combining resting-state fMRI with task fMRI is a feasible and promising method to study functional connectivity characteristics of the brain network involved in prickle perception. It is inferred that the "itch" ingredient of prickle sensation was transmitted from somatosensory cortices to precuneus, and emotional attribute (e.g., pain) from somatosensory cortices to the prefrontal cortex and at last to emotional regions.

Brain connectivity patterns associated with individual differences in the access to experience-near personal semantics: a resting-state fMRI study

It has been proposed that a continuum of specificity exists between episodic and semantic autobiographical memory. Personal semantics have been theorized to situate intermediately on this continuum, with more "experience-near" personal semantics (enPS) closer to the episodic end. We used individual differences in behavior as a model to investigate brain networks associated with the access to episodic autobiographical (EAM) and enPS information, assessing the relation between performance in the EAM and enPS conditions of the Autobiographical Fluency Task (AFT) and intrinsic brain connectivity. Results of an intrinsic connectivity contrast analysis showed that the global connectivity of two clusters in the left and right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) was predicted by performance in the enPS conditions. Moreover, enPS scores predicted the connectivity strength of the right PCC with the bilateral anterior hippocampus (aHC), anterior middle temporal gyrus (aMTG) and medial orbitofrontal cortex, and the left aMTG and PCC. enPS scores also predicted the connectivity strength of the left PCC with the bilateral HC and MTG. The network highlighted involves parts of the core and of the dorsal medial subsystems of the Default Mode Network, in line with the proposal that enPS represents an intermediate entity between episodic and semantic memory.

Subcortical and default mode network connectivity is impaired in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex chronic condition with core symptoms of fatigue and cognitive dysfunction, suggesting a key role for the central nervous system in the pathophysiology of this disease. Several studies have reported altered functional connectivity (FC) related to motor and cognitive deficits in ME/CFS patients. In this study, we compared functional connectivity differences between 31 ME/CFS and 15 healthy controls (HCs) using 7 Tesla MRI. Functional scans were acquired during a cognitive Stroop color-word task, and blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) time series were computed for 27 regions of interest (ROIs) in the cerebellum, brainstem, and salience and default mode networks. A region-based comparison detected reduced FC between the pontine nucleus and cerebellum vermis IX (p = 0.027) for ME/CFS patients compared to HCs. Our ROI-to-voxel analysis found significant impairment of FC within the ponto-cerebellar regions in ME/CFS. Correlation analyses of connectivity with clinical scores in ME/CFS patients detected associations between FC and 'duration of illness' and 'memory scores' in salience network hubs and cerebellum vermis and between FC and 'respiratory rate' within the medulla and the default mode network FC. This novel investigation is the first to report the extensive involvement of aberrant ponto-cerebellar connections consistent with ME/CFS symptomatology. This highlights the involvement of the brainstem and the cerebellum in the pathomechanism of ME/CFS.

Cognitive training and brain stimulation in patients with cognitive impairment: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Repeated sessions of training and non-invasive brain stimulation have the potential to enhance cognition in patients with cognitive impairment. We hypothesized that combining cognitive training with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) will lead to performance improvement in the trained task and yield transfer to non-trained tasks.

METHODS

In our randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study, 46 patients with cognitive impairment (60-80 years) were randomly assigned to one of two interventional groups. We administered a 9-session cognitive training (consisting of a letter updating and a Markov decision-making task) over 3 weeks with concurrent 1-mA anodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (20 min in tDCS, 30 s in sham group). Primary outcome was trained task performance (letter updating task) immediately after training. Secondary outcomes included performance in tasks testing working memory (N-back task), decision-making (Wiener Matrices test) and verbal memory (verbal learning and memory test), and resting-state functional connectivity (FC). Tasks were administered at baseline, at post-assessment, and at 1- and 7-month follow-ups (FU). MRI was conducted at baseline and 7-month FU. Thirty-nine participants (85%) successfully completed the intervention. Data analyses are reported on the intention-to-treat (ITT) and the per-protocol (PP) sample.

RESULTS

For the primary outcome, no difference was observed in the ITT (β = 0.1, 95%-CI [- 1.2, 1.3, p = 0.93] or PP sample (β =  - 0.2, 95%-CI [- 1.6, 1.2], p = 0.77). However, secondary analyses in the N-back working memory task showed that, only in the PP sample, the tDCS outperformed the sham group (PP: % correct, β = 5.0, 95%-CI [- 0.1, 10.2], p = 0.06, d-prime β = 0.2, 95%-CI [0.0, 0.4], p = 0.02; ITT: % correct, β = 3.0, 95%-CI [- 3.9, 9.9], p = 0.39, d-prime β = 0.1, 95%-CI [- 0.1, 0.3], p = 0.5). Frontoparietal network FC was increased from baseline to 7-month FU in the tDCS compared to the sham group (pFDR < 0.05). Exploratory analyses showed a correlation between individual memory improvements and higher electric field magnitudes induced by tDCS (ρtDCS = 0.59, p = 0.02). Adverse events did not differ between groups, questionnaires indicated successful blinding (incidence rate ratio, 1.1, 95%-CI [0.5, 2.2]).

CONCLUSIONS

In sum, cognitive training with concurrent brain stimulation, compared to cognitive training with sham stimulation, did not lead to superior performance enhancements in patients with cognitive impairment. However, we observed transferred working memory benefits in patients who underwent the full 3-week intervention. MRI data pointed toward a potential intervention-induced modulation of neural network dynamics. A link between individual performance gains and electric fields suggested dosage-dependent effects of brain stimulation. Together, our findings do not support the immediate benefit of the combined intervention on the trained function, but provide exploratory evidence for transfer effects on working memory in patients with cognitive impairment. Future research needs to explore whether individualized protocols for both training and stimulation parameters might further enhance treatment gains.

Impact of prenatal marijuana exposure on adolescent brain structural and functional connectivity and behavioural outcomes

There has been an increase in the number of women using marijuana whilst pregnant. Previous studies have shown that children with prenatal marijuana exposure have developmental deficits in memory and decreased attentiveness. In this study, we assess whether prenatal marijuana exposure is associated with alterations in brain regional morphometry and functional and structural connectivity in adolescents. We downloaded behavioural scores and subject image files from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM Study. A total of 178 anatomical and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging files (88 prenatal marijuana exposure and 90 age- and gender-matched controls) and 152 resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging files (76 prenatal marijuana exposure and 76 controls) were obtained. Behavioural metrics based on the parent-reported child behavioural checklist were also obtained for each subject. The associations of prenatal marijuana exposure with 17 subscales of the child behavioural checklist were calculated. We assessed differences in brain morphometry based on voxel-based and surface-based morphometry in adolescents with prenatal marijuana exposure versus controls. We also evaluated group differences in structural and functional connectivity in adolescents for region-to-region connectivity and graph theoretical metrics. Interactions of prenatal marijuana exposure and graph networks were assessed for impact on behavioural scores. Multiple comparison correction was performed as appropriate. Adolescents with prenatal marijuana exposure had greater abnormal or borderline child behavioural checklist scores in 9 out of 17 subscales. There were no significant differences in voxel- or surface-based morphometry, structural connectivity or functional connectivity between prenatal marijuana exposure and controls. However, there were significant differences in prenatal marijuana exposure-graph network interactions with respect to behavioural scores. There were three structural prenatal marijuana exposure-graph network interactions and seven functional prenatal marijuana exposure-graph network interactions that were significantly associated with behavioural scores. Whilst this study was not able to confirm anatomical or functional differences between prenatal marijuana exposure and unexposed pre-adolescent children, there were prenatal marijuana exposure-brain structural and functional graph network interactions that were significantly associated with behavioural scores. This suggests that altered brain networks may underlie behavioural outcomes in adolescents with prenatal marijuana exposure. More work needs to be conducted to better understand the prognostic value of brain structural and functional network measures in prenatal marijuana exposure.

Functional connectivity of sensorimotor network is enhanced in spastic diplegic cerebral palsy: A multimodal study using fMRI and MEG

OBJECTIVE

To assess the effects to functional connectivity (FC) caused by lesions related to spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP) in children and adolescents using multiple imaging modalities.

METHODS

We used resting state magnetoencephalography (MEG) envelope signals in alpha, beta and gamma ranges and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals to quantify FC between selected sensorimotor regions of interest (ROIs) in 11 adolescents with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy and 24 typically developing controls. Motor performance of the hands was quantified with gross motor, fine motor and kinesthesia tests.

RESULTS

In fMRI, participants with CP showed enhanced FC within posterior parietal regions; in MEG, they showed enhanced interhemispheric FC between sensorimotor regions and posterior parietal regions both in alpha and lower beta bands. There was a correlation between the kinesthesia score and fronto-parietal connectivity in the control population.

CONCLUSIONS

CP is associated with enhanced FC in sensorimotor network. This difference is not correlated with hand coordination performance. The effect of the lesion is likely not fully captured by temporal correlation of ROI signals.

SIGNIFICANCE

Brain lesions can show as increased temporal correlation of activity between remote brain areas. We suggest this effect is likely separate from typical physiological correlates of functional connectivity.

Subthalamic functional connectivity associated with freezing of gait dopa-response

INTRODUCTION

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a prevalent and debilitating feature of Parkinson's Disease (PD). The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a center for controlled locomotion and a common DBS target. The objective of this study was to identify STN circuitry associated with FOG response to dopaminergic medication. In this study, we compare BOLD functional connectivity of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in participants with and without dopa-responsive FOG.

METHODS

55 PD participants either with FOG (n = 38) or without FOG (n = 17) were recruited. Among FOG participants 22 were dopa-responsive and 16 were dopa-unresponsive. STN whole-brain connectivity was performed using CONN toolbox. The relationship between the degree of self-reported FOG dopa-response and STN connectivity was evaluated using partial correlations corrected for age, disease duration, and levodopa equivalent daily dose.

RESULTS

Right STN connectivity with the cerebellar locomotor region and the temporal/occipital cortex was greater in the dopa-responsive FOG group (voxel threshold p < 0.01, FWE corrected p < 0.05). Left STN connectivity with the occipital cortex was greater in the dopa-responsive FOG group and connectivity with the postcentral gyrus was greater in the dopa-unresponsive FOG group. Strength of connectivity to these regions correlated with l-dopa induced improvement in UPDRS Item-14 (FOG), but not UPDRS Part-III (overall motor score).

DISCUSSION

We demonstrate that dopa-unresponsive FOG is associated with changes in BOLD functional connectivity between the STN and locomotor as well as sensory processing regions. This finding supports the conceptual framework that effective treatment for freezing of gait likely requires the engagement of both locomotor and sensory brain regions.

Visual stimulation by extensive visual media consumption can be beneficial for motor learning

In this randomized controlled intervention trial, we investigated whether intense visual stimulation through television watching can enhance visual information processing and motor learning performance. 74 healthy young adults were trained in a motor skill with visual information processing demands while being accommodated in a controlled environment for five days. The experimental manipulation (n = 37) consisted of prolonged television watching (i.e., 8 h/day, + 62.5% on average) to induce intense exposure to visual stimulation. The control group (n = 37) did not consume visual media. The groups were compared by motor learning performance throughout the study as well as pre/post visual attention parameters and resting-state network connectivity in functional MRI. We found that the intervention group performed significantly better in the motor learning task (+ 8.21% (95%-CI[12.04, 4.31], t(70) = 4.23, p < 0.001) while showing an increased capacity of visual short-term memory (+ 0.254, t(58) = - 3.19, p = 0.002) and increased connectivity between visual and motor-learning associated resting-state networks. Our findings suggest that the human brain might enter a state of accentuated visuomotor integration to support the implementation of motor learning with visual information processing demands if challenged by ample input of visual stimulation. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the persistence of this effect regarding participants exposed to accustomed amounts of visual media consumption.Clinical Trials Registration: This trial was registered in the German Clinical Trials Register/Deutsches Register klinischer Studien (DRKS): DRKS00019955.

Super-resolution QSM in little or no additional time for imaging (NATIve) using 2D EPI imaging in 3 orthogonal planes

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping has the potential to provide additional insights into neurological diseases but is typically based on a quite long (5-10 min) 3D gradient-echo scan which is highly sensitive to motion. We propose an ultra-fast acquisition based on three orthogonal (sagittal, coronal and axial) 2D simultaneous multi-slice EPI scans with 1 mm in-plane resolution and 3 mm thick slices. Images in each orientation are corrected for susceptibility-related distortions and co-registered with an iterative non-linear Minimum Deformation Averaging (Volgenmodel) approach to generate a high SNR, super-resolution data set with an isotropic resolution of close to 1 mm. The net acquisition time is 3 times the volume acquisition time of EPI or about 12 s, but the three volumes could also replace "dummy scans" in fMRI, making it feasible to acquire QSM in little or No Additional Time for Imaging (NATIve). NATIve QSM values agreed well with reference 3D GRE QSM in the basal ganglia in healthy subjects. In patients with multiple sclerosis, there was also a good agreement between the susceptibility values within lesions and control ROIs and all lesions which could be seen on 3D GRE QSMs could also be visualized on NATIve QSMs. The approach is faster than conventional 3D GRE by a factor of 25-50 and faster than 3D EPI by a factor of 3-5. As a 2D technique, NATIve QSM was shown to be much more robust to motion than the 3D GRE and 3D EPI, opening up the possibility of studying neurological diseases involving iron accumulation and demyelination in patients who find it difficult to lie still for long enough to acquire QSM data with conventional methods.

Different whole-brain functional connectivity correlates of reactive-proactive aggression and callous-unemotional traits in children and adolescents with disruptive behaviors

BACKGROUND

Disruptive behavior in children and adolescents can manifest as reactive aggression and proactive aggression and is modulated by callous-unemotional traits and other comorbidities. Neural correlates of these aggression dimensions or subtypes and comorbid symptoms remain largely unknown. This multi-center study investigated the relationship between resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) and aggression subtypes considering comorbidities.

METHODS

The large sample of children and adolescents aged 8-18 years (n = 207; mean age = 13.30±2.60 years, 150 males) included 118 cases with disruptive behavior (80 with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and/or Conduct Disorder) and 89 controls. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety symptom scores were analyzed as covariates when assessing group differences and dimensional aggression effects on hypothesis-free global and local voxel-to-voxel whole-brain rsFC based on functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3 Tesla.

RESULTS

Compared to controls, the cases demonstrated altered rsFC in frontal areas, when anxiety but not ADHD symptoms were controlled for. For cases, reactive and proactive aggression scores were related to global and local rsFC in the central gyrus and precuneus, regions linked to aggression-related impairments. Callous-unemotional trait severity was correlated with ICC in the inferior and middle temporal regions implicated in empathy, emotion, and reward processing. Most observed aggression subtype-specific patterns could only be identified when ADHD and anxiety were controlled for.

CONCLUSIONS

This study clarifies that hypothesis-free brain connectivity measures can disentangle distinct though overlapping dimensions of aggression in youths. Moreover, our results highlight the importance of considering comorbid symptoms to detect aggression-related rsFC alterations in youths.

Alterations via inter-regional connective relationships in Alzheimer's disease

Disruptions in the inter-regional connective correlation within the brain are believed to contribute to memory impairment. To detect these corresponding correlation networks in Alzheimer's disease (AD), we conducted three types of inter-regional correlation analysis, including structural covariance, functional connectivity and group-level independent component analysis (group-ICA). The analyzed data were obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, comprising 52 cognitively normal (CN) participants without subjective memory concerns, 52 individuals with late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI) and 52 patients with AD. We firstly performed vertex-wise cortical thickness analysis to identify brain regions with cortical thinning in AD and LMCI patients using structural MRI data. These regions served as seeds to construct both structural covariance networks and functional connectivity networks for each subject. Additionally, group-ICA was performed on the functional data to identify intrinsic brain networks at the cohort level. Through a comparison of the structural covariance and functional connectivity networks with ICA networks, we identified several inter-regional correlation networks that consistently exhibited abnormal connectivity patterns among AD and LMCI patients. Our findings suggest that reduced inter-regional connectivity is predominantly observed within a subnetwork of the default mode network, which includes the posterior cingulate and precuneus regions, in both AD and LMCI patients. This disruption of connectivity between key nodes within the default mode network provides evidence supporting the hypothesis that impairments in brain networks may contribute to memory deficits in AD and LMCI.

HD-tDCS induced changes in resting-state functional connectivity: Insights from EF modeling

BACKGROUND

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) holds promise for therapeutic use in psychiatric disorders. One obstacle for the implementation into clinical practice is response variability. One way to tackle this obstacle is the use of Individualized head models.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the variability of HD-tDCS induced electric fields (EFs) and its impact on resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) during different time windows.

METHODS

In this randomized, double-blind, and sham controlled study, seventy healthy males underwent 20 min of 1.5 mA HD-tDCS on the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) while undergoing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Individual head models and EF simulations were created from anatomical images. The effects of HD-tDCS on rsFC were assessed using a seed-to-voxel analysis. A subgroup analysis explored the relationship between EF magnitude and rsFC during different stimulation time windows.

RESULTS

Results highlighted significant variability in HD-tDCS-induced EFs. Compared to the sham group, the active group showed increased rsFC between the rIFG and the left prefrontal cortex, during and after stimulation. During active stimulation, EF magnitude correlated positively with rsFC between the rIFG and the left hippocampus initially, and negatively during the subsequent period.

CONCLUSION

This study indicated an HD-tDCS induced increase of rsFC between left and right prefrontal areas. Furthermore, an interaction between the magnitude and the duration of HD-tDCS on rsFC was observed. Due to the high EF variability that was apparent, these findings highlight the need for individualized HD-tDCS protocols and the creation of head models to optimize effects and reduce response heterogeneity.

Rapid neural changes during novel speech-sound learning: An fMRI and DTI study

While the functional and microstructural changes that occur when we learn new language skills are well documented, relatively little is known about the time course of these changes. Here a combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) study that tracks neural change over three days of learning Arabic phonetic categorization as a new language (L-training) is presented. Twenty adult native English-speaking (L-native) participants are scanned before and after training to perceive and produce L-training phonetic contrasts for one hour on three consecutive days. A third (Chinese) language is used as a control language (L-control). Behavioral results show significant performance improvement for L-training in both learnt tasks; the perception and production task. Imaging analysis reveals that, training-related hemodynamic fMRI signal and fractional anisotropy (FA) value increasing can be observed, in the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) and positively correlated with behavioral improvement. Moreover, post training functional connectivity findings show a significant increasing between LIFG and left inferior parietal lobule for L-training. These results indicate that three hours of phonetic categorization learning causes functional and microstructural changes that are typically associated with much more long-term learning.

Resting-State Functional Connectivity Difference in Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment Using Threshold-Free Cluster Enhancement

The disruption of functional connectivity is one of the early events that occurs in the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. This paper reports a study on the clustering structure of functional connectivity in eight important brain networks in healthy, AD, and prodromal stage subjects. We used the threshold-free cluster enhancement (TFCE) method to explore the connectivity from resting-state functional MR images (rs-fMRIs). We conducted the study on a total of 32 AD, 32 HC, and 31 MCI subjects. We modeled the brain as a graph-based network to study these impairments, and pairwise Pearson's correlation-based functional connectivity was used to construct the brain network. The study found that connections in the sensory motor network (SMN), dorsal attention network (DAN), salience network (SAN), default mode network (DMN), and cerebral network were severely affected in AD and MCI. The disruption in these networks may serve as potential biomarkers for distinguishing AD and MCI from HC. The study suggests that alterations in functional connectivity in these networks may contribute to cognitive deficits observed in AD and MCI. Additionally, a negative correlation was observed between the global clinical dementia rating (CDR) score and the Z-score of functional connectivity within identified clusters in AD subjects. These findings provide compelling evidence suggesting that the neurodegenerative disruption of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) connectivity is extensively distributed across multiple networks in individuals diagnosed with AD.

Prefrontal GABA and glutamate-glutamine levels affect sustained attention

Attention levels fluctuate during the course of daily activities. However, factors underlying sustained attention are still unknown. We investigated mechanisms of sustained attention using psychological, neuroimaging, and neurochemical approaches. Participants were scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while performing gradual-onset, continuous performance tasks (gradCPTs). In gradCPTs, narrations or visual scenes gradually changed from one to the next. Participants pressed a button for frequent Go trials as quickly as possible and withheld responses to infrequent No-go trials. Performance was better for the visual gradCPT than for the auditory gradCPT, but the 2 were correlated. The dorsal attention network was activated during intermittent responses, regardless of sensory modality. Reaction-time variability of gradCPTs was correlated with signal changes (SCs) in the left fronto-parietal regions. We also used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure levels of glutamate-glutamine (Glx) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the left prefrontal cortex (PFC). Glx levels were associated with performance under undemanding situations, whereas GABA levels were related to performance under demanding situations. Combined fMRI-MRS results demonstrated that SCs of the left PFC were positively correlated with neurometabolite levels. These findings suggest that a neural balance between excitation and inhibition is involved in attentional fluctuations and brain dynamics.

Light modulates task-dependent thalamo-cortical connectivity during an auditory attentional task

Exposure to blue wavelength light stimulates alertness and performance by modulating a widespread set of task-dependent cortical and subcortical areas. How light affects the crosstalk between brain areas to trigger this stimulating effect is not established. Here we record the brain activity of 19 healthy young participants (24.05±2.63; 12 women) while they complete an auditory attentional task in darkness or under an active (blue-enriched) or a control (orange) light, in an ultra-high-field 7 Tesla MRI scanner. We test if light modulates the effective connectivity between an area of the posterior associative thalamus, encompassing the pulvinar, and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), key areas in the regulation of attention. We find that only the blue-enriched light strengthens the connection from the posterior thalamus to the IPS. To the best of our knowledge, our results provide the first empirical data supporting that blue wavelength light affects ongoing non-visual cognitive activity by modulating task-dependent information flow from subcortical to cortical areas.

Functional activity of the caudate mediates the relation between early childhood microstructural variations and elevated metabolic syndrome scores

BACKGROUND

Metabolic syndrome score in children assesses the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in future. We aim to probe the role of the caudate in relation to the metabolic syndrome score. Furthermore, using both functional and structural neuroimaging, we aim to examine the interplay between functional and structural measures.

METHODS

A longitudinal birth cohort study with functional and structural neuroimaging data obtained at 4.5, 6.0 and 7.5 years and metabolic syndrome scores at 8.0 years was used. Pearson correlation and linear regression was used to test for correlation fractional anisotropy (FA) and fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALFF) of the caudate with metabolic syndrome scores. Mediation analysis was used to test if later brain measures mediated the relation between earlier brain measures and metabolic syndrome scores. Inhibitory control was also tested as a mediator of the relation between caudate brain measures and metabolic syndrome scores.

RESULTS

FA at 4.5 years and fALFF at 7.5 years of the left caudate was significantly correlated with metabolic syndrome scores. Post-hoc mediation analysis showed that fALFF at 7.5 years fully mediated the relation between FA at 4.5 years and metabolic syndrome scores. Inhibitory control was significantly correlated with fALFF at 7.5 years, but did not mediate the relation between fALFF at 7.5 years and metabolic syndrome scores.

CONCLUSIONS

We found that variations in caudate microstructure at 4.5 years predict later variation in functional activity at 7.5 years. This later variation in functional activity fully mediates the relation between microstructural changes in early childhood and metabolic syndrome scores at 8.0 years.

Artificial gravity during a spaceflight analog alters brain sensory connectivity

Spaceflight has numerous untoward effects on human physiology. Various countermeasures are under investigation including artificial gravity (AG). Here, we investigated whether AG alters resting-state brain functional connectivity changes during head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR), a spaceflight analog. Participants underwent 60 days of HDBR. Two groups received daily AG administered either continuously (cAG) or intermittently (iAG). A control group received no AG. We assessed resting-state functional connectivity before, during, and after HDBR. We also measured balance and mobility changes from pre- to post-HDBR. We examined how functional connectivity changes throughout HDBR and whether AG is associated with differential effects. We found differential connectivity changes by group between posterior parietal cortex and multiple somatosensory regions. The control group exhibited increased functional connectivity between these regions throughout HDBR whereas the cAG group showed decreased functional connectivity. This finding suggests that AG alters somatosensory reweighting during HDBR. We also observed brain-behavioral correlations that differed significantly by group. Control group participants who showed increased connectivity between the putamen and somatosensory cortex exhibited greater mobility declines post-HDBR. For the cAG group, increased connectivity between these regions was associated with little to no mobility declines post-HDBR. This suggests that when somatosensory stimulation is provided via AG, functional connectivity increases between the putamen and somatosensory cortex are compensatory in nature, resulting in reduced mobility declines. Given these findings, AG may be an effective countermeasure for the reduced somatosensory stimulation that occurs in both microgravity and HDBR.

Disrupted excitation-inhibition balance in cognitively normal individuals at risk of Alzheimer's disease

Background

Sex differences impact Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology, but cell-to-network level dysfunctions in the prodromal phase are unclear. Alterations in hippocampal excitation-inhibition balance (EIB) have recently been linked to early AD pathology.

Objective

Examine how AD risk factors (age, APOE-ɛ4, amyloid-β) relate to hippocampal EIB in cognitively normal males and females using connectome-level measures.

Methods

Individuals from the OASIS-3 cohort (age 42-95) were studied (N = 437), with a subset aged 65+ undergoing neuropsychological testing (N = 231).

Results

In absence of AD risk factors (APOE-ɛ4/Aβ+), whole-brain EIB decreases with age more significantly in males than females (p = 0.021, β = -0.007). Regression modeling including APOE-ɛ4 allele carriers (Aβ-) yielded a significant positive AGE-by-APOE interaction in the right hippocampus for females only (p = 0.013, β = 0.014), persisting with inclusion of Aβ+ individuals (p = 0.012, β = 0.014). Partial correlation analyses of neuropsychological testing showed significant associations with EIB in females: positive correlations between right hippocampal EIB with categorical fluency and whole-brain EIB with the trail-making test (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Sex differences in EIB emerge during normal aging and progresses differently with AD risk. Results suggest APOE-ɛ4 disrupts hippocampal balance more than amyloid in females. Increased excitation correlates positively with neuropsychological performance in the female group, suggesting a duality in terms of potential beneficial effects prior to cognitive impairment. This underscores the translational relevance of APOE-ɛ4 related hyperexcitation in females, potentially informing therapeutic targets or early interventions to mitigate AD progression in this vulnerable population.

Dynamic spatial coding in parietal cortex mediates tactile-motor transformation

Movements towards touch on the body require integrating tactile location and body posture information. Tactile processing and movement planning both rely on posterior parietal cortex (PPC) but their interplay is not understood. Here, human participants received tactile stimuli on their crossed and uncrossed feet, dissociating stimulus location relative to anatomy versus external space. Participants pointed to the touch or the equivalent location on the other foot, which dissociates sensory and motor locations. Multi-voxel pattern analysis of concurrently recorded fMRI signals revealed that tactile location was coded anatomically in anterior PPC but spatially in posterior PPC during sensory processing. After movement instructions were specified, PPC exclusively represented the movement goal in space, in regions associated with visuo-motor planning and with regional overlap for sensory, rule-related, and movement coding. Thus, PPC flexibly updates its spatial codes to accommodate rule-based transformation of sensory input to generate movement to environment and own body alike.

Early-Life Critical Windows of Susceptibility to Manganese Exposure and Sex-Specific Changes in Brain Connectivity in Late Adolescence

Background

Early-life environmental exposures during critical windows (CWs) of development can impact life course health. Exposure to neuroactive metals such as manganese (Mn) during prenatal and early postnatal CWs may disrupt typical brain development, leading to persistent behavioral changes. Males and females may be differentially vulnerable to Mn, presenting distinctive CWs to Mn exposure.

Methods

We used magnetic resonance imaging to investigate sex-specific associations between early-life Mn uptake and intrinsic functional connectivity in adolescence. A total of 71 participants (15-23 years old; 53% female) from the Public Health Impact of Manganese Exposure study completed a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. We estimated dentine Mn concentrations at prenatal, postnatal, and early childhood periods using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We performed seed-based correlation analyses to investigate the moderating effect of sex on the associations between Mn and intrinsic functional connectivity adjusting for age and socioeconomic status.

Results

We identified significant sex-specific associations between dentine Mn at all time points and intrinsic functional connectivity in brain regions involved in cognitive and motor function: 1) prenatal: dorsal striatum, occipital/frontal lobes, and middle frontal gyrus; 2) postnatal: right putamen and cerebellum; and 3) early childhood: putamen and occipital, frontal, and temporal lobes. Network associations differed depending on exposure timing, suggesting that different brain networks may present distinctive CWs to Mn.

Conclusions

These findings suggest that the developing brain is vulnerable to Mn exposure, with effects lasting through late adolescence, and that females and males are not equally vulnerable to these effects. Future studies should investigate cognitive and motor outcomes related to these associations.

Time dependent effects of cerebellar tDCS on cerebello-cortical connectivity networks in young adults

The cerebellum is involved in non-motor processing, supported by topographically distinct cerebellar activations and closed loop circuits between the cerebellum and the cortex. Disruptions to cerebellar function and network connectivity in aging or disease may negatively impact prefrontal function and processing. Cerebellar resources may be important for offloading cortical processing, providing crucial scaffolding for normative performance and function. Here, we used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to temporarily alter cerebellar function and subsequently investigated resting state network connectivity. This allows us to investigate network changes that may parallel what is seen in aging and clinical populations, providing additional insights into these key circuits. Critically, what happens to these circuits if the cerebellum is not functioning optimally remains relatively unknown. We employed a between-subjects design applying anodal (n=25), cathodal (n=25), or sham (n=24) stimulation to the cerebellum to examine the effect of stimulation on cerebello-cortical resting state connectivity in young adults. We predicted increased functional connectivity following cathodal stimulation and decreased functional connectivity following anodal stimulation. We found, anodal stimulation resulted in increased connectivity in both ipsilateral and contralateral regions of the cortex, perhaps indicative of a compensatory response to degraded cerebellar output. Additionally, a sliding window analysis also demonstrated a time dependent nature to the impacts of cerebellar tDCS on connectivity, particularly in cognitive region in the cortex. Assuming the difference in connectivity and network-behavior relationships here parallels what occurs in aging or disease, this may provide a mechanism whereby offloading of function to the cerebellum is negatively impacted, resulting in subsequent differences in prefrontal cortical activation patterns and performance deficits. These results might inform and update existing compensatory models of function to include the cerebellum as a vital structure needed for scaffolding.

Literacy, but not memory, is associated with hippocampal connectivity in illiterate adults

Background

The influence of hippocampal connectivity on memory performance is well established in individuals with high educational attainment. However, the role of hippocampal connectivity in illiterate populations remains poorly understood.

Methods

Thirty-five illiterate adults were administered a literacy assessment (Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults - TOFHLA), structural and resting state functional MRI and an episodic memory test (Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test). Illiteracy was defined as a TOFHLA score below 53. We evaluated the correlation between hippocampal connectivity at rest and both free recall and literacy scores.

Results

Participants were mostly female (57.1%) and Black (84.8%), with a median age of 50 years. The median TOFHLA literacy score was 28.0 [21.0;42.5] out of 100 points and the median free recall score was 30.0 [26.2;35] out of 48 points. The median gray matter volume of both the left and right hippocampi was 2.3 [2.1; 2.4] cm3. We observed a significant connectivity between both hippocampi and the precuneus and the ventral medial prefrontal cortex. Interestingly, the right hippocampal connectivity positively correlated with the literacy scores (β = 0.58, p = 0.008). There was no significant association between episodic memory and hippocampal connectivity. Neither memory nor literacy scores correlated with hippocampal gray matter volume.

Conclusions

Low literacy levels correlate with hippocampal connectivity in illiterate adults. The lack of association with memory scores might be associated with low brain reserve in illiterate adults.

Multielectrode Network Stimulation (ME-NETS) demonstrated by concurrent tDCS and fMRI

Non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can modulate activity of targeted brain regions. Whether tDCS can reliably and repeatedly modulate intrinsic connectivity of entire brain networks is unclear. We used concurrent tDCS-MRI to investigate the effect of high dose anodal tDCS on resting state connectivity within the Arcuate Fasciculus (AF) network, which spans the temporal, parietal, and frontal lobes and is connected via a structural backbone, the Arcuate Fasciculus (AF) white matter tract. Effects of high-dose tDCS (4mA) delivered via a single electrode placed over one of the AF nodes (single electrode stimulation, SE-S) was compared to the same dose split between multiple electrodes placed over AF-network nodes (multielectrode network stimulation, ME-NETS). While both SE-S and ME-NETS significantly modulated connectivity between AF network nodes (increasing connectivity during stimulation epochs), ME-NETS had a significantly larger and more reliable effect than SE-S. Moreover, comparison with a control network, the Inferior Longitudinal Fasciculus (ILF) network suggested that the effect of ME-NETS on connectivity was specific to the targeted AF-network. This finding was further supported by the results of a seed-to-voxel analysis wherein we found ME-NETS primarily modulated connectivity between AF-network nodes. Finally, an exploratory analysis looking at dynamic connectivity using sliding window correlation found strong and immediate modulation of connectivity during three stimulation epochs within the same imaging session.

Lifelong impairment in episodic re-experiencing: Neuropsychological and neuroimaging examination of a new case of Severely Deficient Autobiographical Memory

Autobiographical memory (AM) represents a complex and multimodal cognitive function, that allows an individual to collect and retrieve personal events and facts, enabling to develop and maintain the continuity of the self over time. Here we describe the case of DR (acronym of the fictional name Doriana Rossi), a 53-year-old woman, who complains of a specific and lifelong deficit in recalling autobiographical episodes. Along with an extensive neuropsychological assessment, DR underwent a structural and functional MRI examination to further define this impairment. The neuropsychological assessment revealed a deficit in episodic re-experiencing of her own personal life events. DR showed reduced cortical thickness in the Retrosplenial Complex in the left hemisphere, and in the Lateral Occipital Cortex, in the Prostriate Cortex and the Angular Gyrus in the right hemisphere. An altered pattern of activity in the calcarine cortex was detected during ordering of autobiographical events according to her own personal timeline. The present study provides further evidence about the existence of a severely deficient autobiographical memory condition in neurologically healthy people, with otherwise preserved cognitive functioning. Furthermore, the present data provide new important insights into neurocognitive mechanisms underpinning such a developmental condition.

Discrete Ricci curvatures capture age-related changes in human brain functional connectivity networks

Introduction

Geometry-inspired notions of discrete Ricci curvature have been successfully used as markers of disrupted brain connectivity in neuropsychiatric disorders, but their ability to characterize age-related changes in functional connectivity is unexplored.

Methods

We apply Forman-Ricci curvature and Ollivier-Ricci curvature to compare functional connectivity networks of healthy young and older subjects from the Max Planck Institute Leipzig Study for Mind-Body-Emotion Interactions (MPI-LEMON) dataset (N = 225).

Results

We found that both Forman-Ricci curvature and Ollivier-Ricci curvature can capture whole-brain and region-level age-related differences in functional connectivity. Meta-analysis decoding demonstrated that those brain regions with age-related curvature differences were associated with cognitive domains known to manifest age-related changes-movement, affective processing, and somatosensory processing. Moreover, the curvature values of some brain regions showing age-related differences exhibited correlations with behavioral scores of affective processing. Finally, we found an overlap between brain regions showing age-related curvature differences and those brain regions whose non-invasive stimulation resulted in improved movement performance in older adults.

Discussion

Our results suggest that both Forman-Ricci curvature and Ollivier-Ricci curvature correctly identify brain regions that are known to be functionally or clinically relevant. Our results add to a growing body of evidence demonstrating the sensitivity of discrete Ricci curvature measures to changes in the organization of functional connectivity networks, both in health and disease.

The processing of stress in a foreign language modulates functional antagonism between default mode and attention network regions

Lexical stress is an essential element of prosody. Mastering this prosodic feature is challenging, especially in a free-stress foreign language for individuals native to a fixed-stress language, a phenomenon referred to as stress deafness. By using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we elucidated the neuronal underpinnings of stress processing in a free-stress foreign language, and determined the underlying mechanism of stress deafness. Here, we contrasted behavioral and hemodynamic responses revealed by native speakers of a free-stress (German; N = 38) and a fixed-stress (French; N = 47) language while discriminating pairs of words in a free-stress foreign language (Spanish). Consistent with the stress deafness phenomenon, French speakers performed worse than German speakers in discriminating Spanish words based on cues of stress but not of vowel. Whole-brain analyses revealed widespread bilateral networks (cerebral regions including frontal, temporal and parietal areas as well as insular, subcortical and cerebellar structures), overlapping with the ones previously associated with stress processing within native languages. Moreover, our results provide evidence that the structures pertaining to a right-lateralized attention system (i.e., middle frontal gyrus, anterior insula) and the Default Mode Network modulate stress processing as a function of the performance level. In comparison to the German speakers, the French speakers activated the attention system and deactivated the Default Mode Network to a stronger degree, reflecting attentive engagement, likely a compensatory mechanism underlying the "stress-deaf" brain. The mechanism modulating stress processing argues for a rightward lateralization, indeed overlapping with the location covered by the dorsal stream but remaining unspecific to speech.

Functional connectivity analysis of childhood depressive symptoms

BACKGROUND

Childhood depression is a highly distinct and prevalent condition with an unknown neurobiological basis. We wish to explore the resting state fMRI data in children for potential associations between neural connectivity and childhood depressive symptoms.

METHODS

A longitudinal birth cohort study with neuroimaging data obtained at 4.5, 6.0 and 7.5 years of age and the Children Depression Inventory 2 (CDI) administered between 8.5 and 10.5 years was used. The CDI score was used as the dependent variable and tested for correlation, both simple Pearson and network based statistic, with the functional connectivity values obtained from the resting state fMRI. Cross-validated permutation testing with a general linear model was used to validate that the identified functional connections were indeed implicated in childhood depression.

RESULTS

Ten functional connections and four brain regions (Somatomotor Area B, Temporoparietal Junction, Orbitofrontal Cortex and Insula) were identified as significantly associated with childhood depressive symptoms for girls at 6.0 and 7.5 years. No significant functional connections were found in girls at 4.5 years or for boys at any timepoint. Network based statistic and permutation testing confirmed these findings.

CONCLUSIONS

This study revealed significant sex-dependent associations of neural connectivity and childhood depressive symptoms. The regions identified are implicated in speech/language, social cognition and information integration and suggest unique pathways to childhood depressive symptoms.

The role of the prefrontal cortex in semantic control for selecting weakly associated meanings in creative idea generation

Although semantic control is known to play a critical role in selecting weakly associated representations for creative idea generation, direct evidence for this is still lacking. The current study aimed to reveal the role of brain regions, including the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), medial frontal gyrus (MFG), and inferior parietal lobule (IPL), previously reported to be associated with creative idea generation. For this purpose, a functional MRI experiment with a newly developed category judgment task was conducted, which required participants to judge whether two words belonged to the same category. Importantly, weakly associated meanings were manipulated by the task condition, which required selecting an unused meaning of the homonym in a preceding semantic context. The results showed that the selection of a weakly associated meaning for a homonym was associated with an increased activation of the IFG and MFG and a decreased activation of the IPL. These results suggest that IFG and MFG contribute to semantic control processes recruited for the selection of weakly associated meanings and self-guided retrieval, whereas IPL appears to be unrelated to the control demand for creative idea generation.

Functional connectivity MRI quality control procedures in CONN

Quality control (QC) for functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (FC-MRI) is critical to ensure the validity of neuroimaging studies. Noise confounds are common in MRI data and, if not accounted for, may introduce biases in functional measures affecting the validity, replicability, and interpretation of FC-MRI study results. Although FC-MRI analysis rests on the assumption of adequate data processing, QC is underutilized and not systematically reported. Here, we describe a quality control pipeline for the visual and automated evaluation of MRI data implemented as part of the CONN toolbox. We analyzed publicly available resting state MRI data (N = 139 from 7 MRI sites) from the FMRI Open QC Project. Preprocessing steps included realignment, unwarp, normalization, segmentation, outlier identification, and smoothing. Data denoising was performed based on the combination of scrubbing, motion regression, and aCompCor - a principal component characterization of noise from minimally eroded masks of white matter and of cerebrospinal fluid tissues. Participant-level QC procedures included visual inspection of raw-level data and of representative images after each preprocessing step for each run, as well as the computation of automated descriptive QC measures such as average framewise displacement, average global signal change, prevalence of outlier scans, MNI to anatomical and functional overlap, anatomical to functional overlap, residual BOLD timeseries variability, effective degrees of freedom, and global correlation strength. Dataset-level QC procedures included the evaluation of inter-subject variability in the distributions of edge connectivity in a 1,000-node graph (FC distribution displays), and the estimation of residual associations across participants between functional connectivity strength and potential noise indicators such as participant's head motion and prevalence of outlier scans (QC-FC analyses). QC procedures are demonstrated on the reference dataset with an emphasis on visualization, and general recommendations for best practices are discussed in the context of functional connectivity and other fMRI analysis. We hope this work contributes toward the dissemination and standardization of QC testing performance reporting among peers and in scientific journals.

Dimensional personality impairment is associated with disruptions in intrinsic intralimbic functional connectivity

BACKGROUND

Recently proposed alternative dimensional models of personality disorder (PD) place the severity of impairments in self and interpersonal functioning at the core of personality pathology. However, associations of these impairments with disturbances in social, cognitive, and affective brain networks remain uninvestigated.

METHODS

The present study examined patterns of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in a sample of 74 age- and sex-matched participants (45 inpatients with PD and 29 healthy controls). At a minimum, PD patients carried a diagnosis of borderline PD, although the majority of the sample had one or more additional PDs. rsFC patterns in the following networks were compared between groups and in association with dimensional personality impairments: default mode network (DMN)/core mentalization, frontolimbic, salience, and central executive. Further, the extent to which variation in rsFC was explained by levels of personality impairment as compared to typology-specific borderline PD symptom severity was explored.

RESULTS

Relative to controls, the PD group showed disruptions in rsFC within the DMN/core mentalization and frontolimbic networks. Among PD patients, greater severity of dimensional self-interpersonal impairment was associated with stronger intralimbic rsFC. In contrast, severity of borderline PD-specific typology was not associated with any rsFC patterns.

CONCLUSIONS

Disruptions in core mentalization and affective networks are present in PD. Higher intralimbic functional connectivity may underlie self-interpersonal personality impairment in PD regardless of diagnostic typology-specific PD symptoms, providing initial neurobiological evidence supporting alternative dimensional conceptualizations of personality pathology.

Sex differences in the neural underpinnings of unimanual and bimanual control in adults

While many of the movements we make throughout our day involve just one upper limb, most daily movements require a certain degree of coordination between both upper limbs. Historically, sex differences in eye-hand coordination have been observed. As well, there are demonstrated sex-specific differences in hemisphere symmetry, interhemispheric connectivity, and motor cortex organization. While it has been suggested that these anatomical differences may underlie sex-related differences in performance, sex differences in the functional neural correlate underlying bimanual performance have not been explicitly investigated. In the current study we tested the hypothesis that the functional connectivity underlying bimanual movement control differed depending on the sex of an individual. Participants underwent MRI scanning to acquire anatomical and functional brain images. During the functional runs, participants performed unimanual and bimanual coordination tasks using two button boxes. The tasks included pressing the buttons in time to an auditory cue with either their left or their right hand individually (unimanual), or with both hands simultaneously (bimanual). The bimanual task was further divided into either an in-phase (mirror/symmetrical) or anti-phase (parallel/asymmetrical) condition. Participants were provided with extensive training to ensure task comprehension, and performance error rates were found to be equivalent between men and women. A generalized psychophysiological interaction (gPPI) analysis was implemented to examine how functional connectivity in each condition was modulated by sex. In support of our hypothesis, women and men demonstrated differences in the neural correlates underlying unimanual and bimanual movements. In line with previous literature, functional connectivity patterns showed sex-related differences for right- vs left-hand movements. Sex-specific functional connectivity during bimanual movements was not a sum of the functional connectivity underlying right- and left-hand unimanual movements. Further, women generally showed greater interhemispheric functional connectivity across all conditions compared to men and had greater connectivity between task-related cortical areas, while men had greater connectivity involving the cerebellum. Sex differences in brain connectivity were associated with both unimanual and bimanual movement control. Not only do these findings provide novel insight into the fundamentals of how the brain controls bimanual movements in both women and men, they also present potential clinical implications on how bimanual movement training used in rehabilitation can best be tailored to the needs of individuals.

Stability of associations between neuroticism and microstructural asymmetry of the cingulum during late childhood and adolescence: Insights from a longitudinal study with up to 11 waves

Adolescence is characterized by significant brain development and marks a period of the life span with an increased incidence of mood disorders, especially in females. The risk of developing mood disorders is also higher in individuals scoring high on neuroticism, a personality trait characterized by a tendency to experience negative and anxious emotions. We previously found in a cross-sectional study that neuroticism is associated with microstructural left-right asymmetry of the fronto-limbic white matter involved in emotional processing, with opposite effects in female and male adolescents. We now have extended this work collecting longitudinal data in 76 typically developing children and adolescents aged 7-18 years, including repeated MRI sampling up to 11 times. This enabled us, for the first time, to address the critical question, whether the association between neuroticism and frontal-limbic white matter asymmetry changes or remains stable across late childhood and adolescence. Neuroticism was assessed up to four times and showed good intraindividual stability and did not significantly change with age. Conforming our cross-sectional results, females scoring high on neuroticism displayed increased left-right cingulum fractional anisotropy (FA), while males showed decreased left-right cingulum FA asymmetry. Despite ongoing age-related increases in FA in cingulum, the association between neuroticism and cingulum FA asymmetry was already expressed in females in late childhood and remained stable across adolescence. In males, the association appeared to become more prominent during adolescence. Future longitudinal studies need to cover an earlier age span to elucidate the time point at which the relationship between neuroticism and cingulum FA asymmetry arises.

Sex-specific differences in resting-state functional brain activity in pediatric concussion

Pediatric concussion has a rising incidence and can lead to long-term symptoms in nearly 30% of children. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) disturbances are a common pathological feature of pediatric concussion, though no studies have explicitly examined sex-differences with respect to this outcome, precluding a sex-specific understanding of the functional neuropathology of pediatric concussion. Therefore, we performed a secondary data analysis of rs-fMRI data collected on children with concussion (n = 29) recruited from in a pediatric hospital setting, with greater than 12:1 matched control data accessed from the open-source ABIDE-II database. Seed-based and region of interest (ROI) analyses were used to examine sex-based rs-fMRI differences; threshold-free cluster enhancement (TFCE) and a family-wise error (FWE) corrected p-values were used to identify significantly different clusters. In comparing females with concussion to healthy females, groupwise differences were observed irrespective of seed selected. Notably, we observed (in order of largest effect) hypo-connectivity between the anterior cingulate cortex of the salience network and the thalamus and precuneus (TFCE = 1473.5, p-FWE < 0.001) and the cingulate gyrus (TFCE = 769.3, p-FWE = 0.009), and the seed (posterior cingulate cortex (PCC)) of the default mode network and the paracingulate gyrus (TFCE = 1275.7, p-FWE  < 0.001), occipital pole right (TFCE = 1045.0, p-FWE = 0.001), and sub-callosal cortex (TFCE = 844.9, p-FWE = 0.005). Hyper-connectivity was observed between the salience network seed and the cerebellum (TFCE = 1719.3, p-FWE < 0.001) and the PCC and the thalamus (TFCE = 1198.3, p-FWE < 0.001), cuneal cortex (1070.9, p-FWE = 0.001), and lateral occipital cortex left (TFCE = 832.8, p-FWE = 0.006). ROI analyses showed 10 and 5 significant clusters of hypo- and hyper-connectivity in females, respectively. Only one cluster of difference was found between males with concussion and healthy males on seed-based analyses, and 3 clusters on ROI analyses. There are alterations in rs-fMRI in females with concussion at one-month post-injury that are minimally present in males, which provides further evidence that recovery timelines in pediatric concussion may differ by sex.

Curiosity and mesolimbic functional connectivity drive information seeking in real life

Curiosity reflects an individual's intrinsic motivation to seek information in order to close information gaps. In laboratory-based experiments, both curiosity and information seeking have been associated with enhanced neural dynamics in the mesolimbic dopaminergic circuit. However, it is unclear whether curiosity and dopaminergic dynamics drive information seeking in real life. We investigated (i) whether curiosity predicts different characteristics of real-life information seeking and (ii) whether functional connectivity within the mesolimbic dopaminergic circuit is associated with information seeking outside the laboratory. Up to 15 months before the COVID-19 pandemic, curiosity and anxiety questionnaires and a 10-minute resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging session were conducted. In a follow-up survey early during the COVID-19 pandemic, participants repeated the questionnaires and completed an additional questionnaire about their COVID-19-related information seeking. Individual differences in curiosity but not anxiety were positively associated with the frequency of information-seeking behaviour. Additionally, the frequency of information seeking was predicted by individual differences in resting-state functional connectivity between the ventral tegmental area and the nucleus accumbens. The present translational study paves the way for future studies on the role of curiosity in real-life information seeking by showing that both curiosity and the mesolimbic dopaminergic functional network support real-life information-seeking behaviour.

Nonconscious information can be identified as task-relevant but not prioritized in working memory

Two critical features of working memory are the identification and appropriate use of task-relevant information while avoiding distraction. Here, in 3 experiments, we explored if these features can be achieved also for nonconscious stimuli. Participants performed a delayed match-to-sample task in which task relevance of 2 competing stimuli was indicated by a cue, and continuous flash suppression was used to manipulate the conscious/nonconscious visual experience. Experiment 1 revealed better-than-chance performance with nonconscious stimuli, demonstrating goal-directed use of nonconscious task-relevant information. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the cue that defined task relevance must be conscious to allow such goal-directed use. In Experiment 3, multi-voxel pattern analyses of brain activity revealed that only the target was prioritized and maintained during conscious trials. Conversely, during nonconscious trials, both target and distractor were maintained. However, decoding of task relevance during the probe/test phase demonstrated identification of both target and distractor information. These results show that identification of task-relevant information can operate also on nonconscious material. However, they do not support the prioritization of nonconscious task-relevant information, thus suggesting a mismatch in the attentional mechanisms involved during conscious and nonconscious working memory.

Cingulo-Opercular Subnetworks Motivate Frontoparietal Subnetworks during Distinct Cognitive Control Demands

Cognitive control is the ability to flexibly adapt behavior in a goal-directed manner when habit will not suffice. Control can be separated into distinct forms based on the timescale (present-future) and/or medium (external-internal) over which it operates. Both the frontoparietal network (FPN) and cingulo-opercular network (CON) are engaged during control, but their respective functions and interactions remain unclear. Here, we examined activations in the FPN and CON with fMRI in humans (male and female) during a task that manipulated control across timescales/mediums. The findings show that the CON can be distinguished into the following two separable subnetworks mirroring the FPN: a rostral/ventral subnetwork sensitive to future-oriented control involving internal representations, and a caudal/dorsal subnetwork sensitive to present-oriented control involving external representations. Relative to the FPN, activation in the CON was particularly pronounced during transitions into and out of particular control demands. Moreover, the relationship of each CON subnetwork to behavior was mediated by a respective FPN subnetwork. Such data are consistent with the idea that the CON motivates the FPN, which, in turn, drives behavior. Within the CON, the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) mediated the relationship between the anterior insula and FPN, suggesting that the dmPFC acts as the crux that links the CON to the FPN. Collectively, these data indicate that parallel CON-FPN subnetworks mediate controlled behaviors at distinct timescales/mediums.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The cingulo-opercular network (CON) and frontoparietal network (FPN) are engaged in diverse, demanding tasks. A functional model describing how areas within these networks can be distinguished, and also interact, would facilitate understanding of how the brain adapts to demanding situations. During a comprehensive control task, fMRI data revealed that the FPN and CON can be fractionated into subnetworks based on control demands that are either externally oriented for use in the present, or control demands that operate internally to guide future behavior. Moreover, we found evidence for a chain of relationships from the CON to FPN to behavior consistent with the idea that the CON drives the FPN to adapt behavior.

Intrinsic hippocampal connectivity is associated with individual differences in retrospective duration processing

The estimation of incidentally encoded durations of time intervals (retrospective duration processing) is thought to rely on the retrieval of contextual information associated with a sequence of events, automatically encoded in medial temporal lobe regions. "Time cells" have been described in the hippocampus (HC), encoding the temporal progression of events and their duration. However, whether the HC supports explicit retrospective duration judgments in humans, and which neural dynamics are involved, is still poorly understood. Here we used resting-state fMRI to test the relation between variations in intrinsic connectivity patterns of the HC, and individual differences in retrospective duration processing, assessed using a novel task involving the presentation of ecological stimuli. Results showed that retrospective duration discrimination performance predicted variations in the intrinsic connectivity of the bilateral HC with the right precentral gyrus; follow-up exploratory analyses suggested a role of the CA1 and CA4/DG subfields in driving the observed pattern. Findings provide insights on neural networks associated with implicit processing of durations in the second range.

Neural correlates of lexical stress processing in a foreign free-stress language

INTRODUCTION

The paper examines the discrimination of lexical stress contrasts in a foreign language from a neural perspective. The aim of the study was to identify the areas associated with word stress processing (in comparison with vowel processing), when listeners of a fixed-stress language have to process stress in a foreign free-stress language.

METHODS

We asked French-speaking participants to process stress and vowel contrasts in Spanish, a foreign language that the participants did not know. Participants performed a discrimination task on Spanish word pairs differing either with respect to word stress (penultimate or final stressed word) or with respect to the final vowel while functional magnetic resonance imaging data was acquired.

RESULTS

Behavioral results showed lower accuracy and longer reaction times for discriminating stress contrasts than vowel contrasts. The contrast Stress > Vowel revealed an increased bilateral activation of regions shown to be associated with stress processing (i.e., supplementary motor area, insula, middle/superior temporal gyrus), as well as a stronger involvement of areas related to more domain-general cognitive control functions (i.e., bilateral inferior frontal gyrus). The contrast Vowel > Stress showed an increased activation in regions typically associated with the default mode network (known for decreasing its activity during attentionally more demanding tasks).

CONCLUSION

When processing Spanish stress contrasts as compared to processing vowel contrasts, native listeners of French activated to a higher degree anterior networks including regions related to cognitive control. They also show a decrease in regions related to the default mode network. These findings, together with the behavioral results, reflect the higher cognitive demand, and therefore, the larger difficulties, for French-speaking listeners during stress processing as compared to vowel processing.
