Abstract
In the elderly, the coexistence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and frailty is frequent. Much has been described about pharmacological management and glycemic control goals. However, there is a knowledge gap in terms of the objectives and characteristics of interventions, especially nutritional ones, for this population. A scoping review was performed to document the objectives, characteristics, and results of nutritional interventions in older people with T2DM and frailty. The five-stage framework of Arksey and O'Malley was used, as was the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. The results stand out for three trends, as follows: (1) experimental studies with multicomponent intervention physical exercise programs and nutritional programs based on educational processes or behavioral intervention; (2) observational studies with an association of the kind of diet assessed by scales and their relation to stages of frailty; (3) a review that updates recommendations on pharmacological and non-pharmacological, diet, exercise, management, as well as glucose control goals for diabetes in frail older persons. Finally, the evidence shows that management of T2DM in older adults with frailty requires goals and interventions tailored to their functional capacity and health condition. The exercise, diet, and education programs reviewed have demonstrated their effectiveness in improving physical performance, reducing the risk of frailty or progression to more advanced stages, and achieving better glycemic control.

Abstract
To identify patterns in big medical datasets and use Deep Learning and Machine Learning (ML) to reliably diagnose Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD), researchers are currently delving deeply into these fields. Training on large datasets and producing highly accurate validation results is exceedingly difficult. Furthermore, early and precise diagnosis is necessary due to the increased global prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the increasing complexity of healthcare datasets makes it challenging to detect feature connections and produce precise predictions. To address these issues, the Intelligent Cardiovascular Disease Diagnosis based on Ant Colony Optimisation with Enhanced Deep Learning (ICVD-ACOEDL) model was developed. This model employs feature selection (FS) and hyperparameter optimization to diagnose CVD. Applying a min-max scaler, medical data is first consistently prepared. The key feature that sets ICVD-ACOEDL apart is the use of Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) to select an optimal feature subset, which in turn helps to upgrade the performance of the ensuring deep learning enhanced neural network (DLENN) classifier. The model reforms the hyperparameters of DLENN for CVD classification using Bayesian optimization. Comprehensive evaluations on benchmark medical datasets show that ICVD-ACOEDL exceeds existing techniques, indicating that it could have a significant impact on CVD diagnosis. The model furnishes a workable way to increase CVD classification efficiency and accuracy in real-world medical situations by incorporating ACO for feature selection, min-max scaling for data pre-processing, and Bayesian optimization for hyperparameter tweaking.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of death globally. Recent advancements in sequencing technologies have led to the identification of a unique population of macrophages within the heart, termed cardiac resident macrophages (CRMs), which exhibit self-renewal capabilities and play crucial roles in regulating cardiac homeostasis, inflammation, as well as injury and repair processes. This literature review aims to elucidate the origin and phenotypic characteristics of CRMs, comprehensively outline their contributions to cardiac homeostasis and further summarize their functional roles and molecular mechanisms implicated in the onset and progression of cardiovascular diseases. These insights are poised to pave the way for novel therapeutic strategies centred on targeted interventions based on the distinctive properties of resident macrophages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marital status is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and overall mortality, yet limited research on this topic in elderly individuals is available. Our aim was to comprehensively assess the impact of marital status and other family factors on CVD incidence and long-term mortality among elderly people. METHODS Data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2002/2005/2008-2018) for participants aged ≥60 years were analysed. A cross-sectional study initially examined the correlation between spouses, offspring, living arrangements, and CVD using logistic regression. Subsequently, a retrospective cohort study investigated the long-term associations of these factors with overall mortality via Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS The study involved 48 510 subjects (average age: 87 years). The cross-sectional analysis revealed a correlation between living with a spouse and an increased incidence of heart disease (adjusted OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.04-1.55) and cerebrovascular disease/stroke (adjusted OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.11-1.42). According to the retrospective cohort analysis, living with a spouse significantly reduced overall mortality (adjusted HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.80-0.87), irrespective of marital relationship quality. Conversely, living with offspring (adjusted HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.08-1.16), having more children (adjusted Pnonlinearity = 0.427) or cohabitants (adjusted Pnonlinearity < 0.0001) were associated with increased overall mortality. CONCLUSION In the elderly population, being married and living with a spouse were not significantly associated with a decrease in CVD incidence but were associated with a reduction in long-term overall mortality. Living with offspring, having more children, or having a larger family size did not replicate the protective effect but indicated greater overall mortality.

Abstract
The global population is experiencing an aging trend; however, this increased longevity is not necessarily accompanied by improved health in older age. A significant consequence of this demographic shift is the rising prevalence of multiple chronic illnesses, posing challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. Aging is a major risk factor for multimorbidity, which marks a progressive decline in resilience and a dysregulation of multisystem homeostasis. Cardiovascular risk factors, along with aging and comorbidities, play a critical role in the development of heart disease. Among comorbidities, age itself stands out as one of the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease, with its prevalence and incidence notably increasing in the elderly population. However, elderly individuals, especially those who are frail and have multiple comorbidities, are under-represented in primary and secondary prevention trials aimed at addressing traditional cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. There are concerns regarding the optimal intensity of treatment, taking into account tolerability and the risk of drug interactions. Additionally, uncertainty persists regarding therapeutic targets across different age groups. This article provides an overview of the relationship between aging and cardiovascular disease, highlighting various cardiovascular prevention issues in the elderly population.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationship between serum cholesterol levels and the ratio of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in the blood serum and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In Phase I of the study, 9704 individuals between the age of 35 and 65 years were recruited. Phase II of the cohort study comprised 7561 participants who completed the 10-year follow-up. The variables which were measured at the baseline of the study included gender, age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP); biochemical parameters including serum Cu, Zn, copper-zinc ratio (Cu/Zn), zinc-copper ratio (Zn/Cu); fasted lipid profile consisting of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) as well as fasting serum glucose, and triglycerides-glucose (TyG) index. Decision tree (DT) and logical regression (LR) models were applied to examine the relationship between the aforementioned factors and CVD. CVD was diagnosed in 837 individuals (378 males and 459 females) out of 7561 participants. According to the LR models, SBP, TC, HDL, age, Zn/Cu, and TyG index for males and SBP, age, TyG index, HDL, TC, Cu/Zn, and Cu for females had the highest correlation with CVD (p-value ≤ 0.033). Based on the DT algorithm, 88% of males with SPB < 129.66 mmHg, younger age (age < 53 years), TyG index < 9.53, 173 ≤ TC < 187 mg/dL, and HDL ≥ 32 mg/dL had the lowest risk of CVD. Also, 98% of females with SBP < 128 mmHg, TyG index < 9.68, age < 44, TC < 222 mg/dL, and HDL ≥ 63.7 mg/dL had the lowest risk of CVD. It can be concluded that the Zn/Cu for men and Cu/Zn for women, along with dyslipidemia and SBP, could significantly predict the risk of CVD in this cohort from northeastern Iran.

Abstract
With increasing age, dyslipidemia becomes a common health problem in the middle-aged and elderly population, posing a significant risk of cardiovascular disease. Aerobic exercise, as a non-pharmacological intervention, is considered to be effective in improving blood lipid levels, but the extent to which different types of aerobic exercise affect blood lipids is not clear. This study aims to investigate the effects of 12 different aerobic exercises on total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in middle-aged and elderly people aged 45 years and over through systematic review and Bayesian network Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. We systematically searched relevant databases and included eligible randomized controlled trials. Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to compare the effects of 12 types of aerobic exercise on lipid levels. A total of 487 randomized controlled trials involving middle-aged and elderly people over 45 years old were included. The results of the network meta-analysis showed that all types of aerobic exercise could reduce blood lipid levels compared with no intervention in middle-aged and elderly people. In terms of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, swimming had the most significant effect. For HDL cholesterol, dance showed a better effect. Studies have shown that swimming and dancing have a positive effect on improving blood lipid levels in middle-aged and elderly people. It is recommended to choose the appropriate type of exercise according to personal preference and physical condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To our knowledge, only one study has examined the association between glucose variability (GV) and mortality in the elderly population with diabetes. GV was assessed by HbA1c, and a J-shaped curve was observed in the relationship between HbA1c thresholds and mortality. No study of GV was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdown. This study aims to evaluate whether GV is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in patients aged 75 years or older with and without COVID-19 who were followed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdown measures. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study of 407,492 patients from the AGED-MADRID dataset aged 83.5 (SD 5.8) years; 63.2% were women, and 29.3% had diabetes. GV was measured by the coefficient of variation of fasting plasma glucose (CV-FPG) over 6 years of follow-up (2015-2020). The outcome measure was all-cause mortality in 2020. Four models of logistic regression were performed, from simple (age, sex) to fully adjusted, to assess the effect of CV-FPG on all-cause mortality. RESULTS During follow-up, 34,925 patients died (14,999 women and 19,926 men), with an all-cause mortality rate of 822.3 per 10,000 person-years (95% confidence interval (CI), 813.7 to 822.3) (739 per 10,000; 95% CI 728.7 to 739.0 in women and 967.1 per 10,000; 95% CI 951.7 to 967.2 in men). The highest quartile of CV-FPG was significantly more common in the deceased group (40.1% vs. 23.6%; p < 0.001). In the fully adjusted model including dementia (Alzheimer's disease) and basal FPG, the odds ratio for mortality ranged from 1.88 to 2.06 in patients with T2DM and from 2.30 to 2.61 in patients with normoglycaemia, according to different sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS GV has clear implications for clinical practice, as its assessment as a risk prediction tool should be included in the routine follow-up of the elderly and in a comprehensive geriatric assessment. Electronic health records can incorporate tools that allow its calculation, and with this information, clinicians will have a broader view of the medium- and long-term prognosis of their patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We aimed to investigate the association between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and various anthropometric indices, as well as the serum levels of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), copper-zinc ratio (Cu/Zn ratio) and zinc-copper ratio (Zn/Cu ratio), in a large population sample from northeastern Iranian. METHOD 9704 individuals aged 35 to 65 were enrolled in the first phase of the study. After a 10-year follow-up, 7560 participants were enrolled into the second phase. The variables used in this study included demographic characteristics, such as gender and age; biochemical parameters including: serum Zn, Cu, Cu/Zn ratio, and Zn/Cu ratio; anthropometric parameters including: waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The relationship between the aforementioned indices and CVD was examined using decision tree (DT) and logistic regression (LR) models. RESULTS A total of 837 individuals were diagnosed with CVD among the 7560 participants. LR analysis showed that BMI, age, WH zinc-copper ratio (Zn/Cu ratio), and serum Zn/Cu ratio were significantly associated the development of CVD in men, and WHR, age, BMI, serum Cu, and Cu/Zn ratio in women. DT analysis showed that, age was the most important predictor of CVD in both genders. 71% of women, older than 49 years, with a WHR≥ 0.89, serum Cu< 75 (µg/dl), BMI≥ 22.93 (kg/m2), and serum Cu≥ 14 (µg/dl), had the highest risk of CVD. In men, among those who were ≥ 53 years, with a WHR≥ 0.98, serum Zn/Cu ratio< 1.69, and BMI≥ 22.30, had the highest risk of CVD. CONCLUSION Among Iranian adult population, BMI, age, and WHR were one of the predictors of CVD for both genders. The Zn/Cu ratio was CVD predictor for men while Cu/Zn ratio was CVD predictor for women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate clinical characteristics, effectiveness, and tolerability of preventive anti- calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in the elderly. Anti-CGRP mAbs have demonstrated efficacy and safety in patients with migraine although there is limited information regarding the elderly. DESIGN We performed a multicenter case-control study of cases (patients over 65 years old) and controls (sex-matched patients under 55 years old) with migraine receiving anti-CGRP mAbs. METHODS We included the demographic characteristics, effectiveness-reduction in the number of monthly headache days (MHD) and monthly migraine days (MMD), 30%, 50%, and 75% responder rates-and treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs). The primary endpoint was the 50% response rate regarding MHD at weeks 20-24; exploratory 50% response predictors in the elderly were evaluated. RESULTS In total, 228 patients were included: 114 cases , 114 controls-. Among cases 84.2% (96/114) were women, 79.8% (91/114) CM; mean age of cases 70.1 years old (range: 66-86); mean age of controls was 42.9 years old(range: 38-49). Cases had a higher percentage of vascular risk factors (P < .05),older age of onset (P < .001) and more reported prior preventive treatments (P < .001). Regarding effectiveness in cases, 50% response rate was achieved by 57.5% (42/73) at 20-24 weeks, with lower reduction in the MHD at 8-12 weeks (5 [7.2], 8 [9.1]; P = .001) and a higher reduction in MMD at 20-24 weeks (10.7 [9.1], 9.2 [7.7]; P = .04) compared to the control group. The percentage of TEAEs was similar in the 2 groups. Diagnosis of episodic migraine (EM) (P = .03) and lower number of MHD at baseline (P = .001) were associated with a 50% response in the elderly in univariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides real world evidence of effectiveness and safety of anti-CGRP mAbs for migraine in patients without upper age-limit and possible predictors of anti-CGRP response in the elderly.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The true global burden of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is unknown. Reducing risk factors for stroke and cardiovascular disease would inevitably curtail VCI. AREAS COVERED The authors review current diagnosis, epidemiology, and risk factors for VCI. VCI increases in older age and by inheritance of known genetic traits. They emphasize modifiable risk factors identified by the 2020 Lancet Dementia Commission. The most profound risks for VCI also include lower education, cardiometabolic factors, and compromised cognitive reserve. Finally, they discuss pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. EXPERT OPINION By virtue of the high frequencies of stroke and cardiovascular disease the global prevalence of VCI is expectedly higher than prevalent neurodegenerative disorders causing dementia. Since ~ 90% of the global burden of stroke can be attributed to modifiable risk factors, a formidable opportunity arises to reduce the burden of not only stroke but VCI outcomes including progression from mild to the major in form of vascular dementia. Strict control of vascular risk factors and secondary prevention of cerebrovascular disease via pharmacological interventions will impact on burden of VCI. Non-pharmacological measures by adopting healthy diets and encouraging physical and cognitive activities and urging multidomain approaches are important for prevention of VCI and preservation of vascular brain health.

Abstract
This study aims to examine the impact of the microfluidic preparation process on the quality of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) co-delivered with scutellarin (SCU) and paeoniflorin (PAE) in comparison to a conventional emulsification method and to evaluatethe potential cardio-protective effect of SCU-PAE PLGA NPs produced through emulsification method. As compared with microfluidics, the nanoparticles prepared by emulsification method exhibited a smaller size, higher encapsulation efficiency, higher drug loading and lower viscosity for injection. Subsequently, a rat myocardial ischemia (MI) was established using male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (250 ± 20 g) subcutaneously injected with 85 mg/kg isoproterenol (ISO) for two consecutive days. The pharmacokinetic findings demonstrated that our SCU-PAE PLGA NPs exhibited prolonged blood circulation time in MI rats, leading to increased levels of SCU and PAE in the heart. This resulted in significant improvements in electrocardiogram and cardiac index, as well as reduced serum levels of CK, LDH, AST. Histopathological analysis using H&E and TUNEL staining provided further evidence of improved cardiac function and decreased apoptosis. Additionally, experiments measuring SOD, MDA, GSH, NO, TNF-α and IL-6 levels indicated that SCU-PAE PLGA NPs may effectively treat MI through oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways, thereby establishing it as a promising therapeutic intervention.

Background We aimed to explore the association between lipids and the survival and walking ability of hip fractures in geriatric patients after surgery. Methods Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was established to explore the nonlinear relationship between lipids and 1-year mortality of hip fractures, and the cut-off points were also determined by RCS. Then, the patients were divided into three groups: low, middle, and high levels of LDL-c. Then, the survival and walking ability of patients from different groups were compared, and the Cox regression and Logistics regression were used to identify the relationships between lipids and the survival and walking ability of hip fractures. Results The patients with middle levels of LDL-c had a significantly high survival probability than those with low or high levels of LDL-c (p < 0.001). The patients with low levels of LDL-c and with high levels of LDL-c may have a poor prognosis compared with patients with middle levels of LDL-c in 6-month mortality, 6-month free walking ability, 1-year mortality, and 1-year free walking ability (All p < 0.05). Conclusion Low and high levels of LDL-c may both relate to the poor survival and walking ability of hip fractures.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as arterial hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, etc., still represent the main cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. They significantly modify the patients' quality of life with a tremendous economic impact. It is well established that cardiovascular risk factors increase the probability of fatal and non-fatal cardiac events. These risk factors are classified into modifiable (smoking, arterial hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, low HDL cholesterol, diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption, high-fat and high-calorie diet, reduced physical activity) and non-modifiable (sex, age, family history, of previous cardiovascular disease). Hence, CVD prevention is based on early identification and management of modifiable risk factors whose impact on the CV outcome is now performed by the use of CV risk assessment models, such as the Framingham Risk Score, Pooled Cohort Equations, or the SCORE2. However, in recent years, emerging, non-traditional factors (metabolic and non-metabolic) seem to significantly affect this assessment. In this article, we aim at defining these emerging factors and describe the potential mechanisms by which they might contribute to the development of CVD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many studies have been published to assess the best anthropometric measurements associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but controversies still exist. AIM Investigating the association between CVDs and anthropometric measurements among Iranian adults. METHODS For a total population of 9354 aged 35 to 65, a prospective study was designed. Anthropometric measurements including ABSI (A Body Shape Index), Body Adiposity Index (BAI), Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist to Height Ratio (WHtR), Body Round Index (BRI), HC (Hip Circumference), Demispan, Mid-arm circumference (MAC), Waist-to-hip (WH) and Waist Circumference (WC) were completed. The association between these parameters and CVDs were assessed through logistic regression (LR) and decision tree (DT) models. RESULTS During the 6-year follow-up, 4596 individuals (49%) developed CVDs. According to the LR, age, BAI, BMI, Demispan, and BRI, in male and age, WC, BMI, and BAI in female had a significant association with CVDs (p-value < 0.03). Age and BRI for male and age and BMI for female represent the most appropriate estimates for CVDs (OR: 1.07, (95% CI: 1.06, 1.08), 1.36 (1.22, 1.51), 1.14 (1.13, 1.15), and 1.05 (1.02, 1.07), respectively). In the DT for male, those with BRI ≥ 3.87, age ≥ 46 years, and BMI ≥ 35.97 had the highest risk to develop CVDs (90%). Also, in the DT for female, those with age ≥ 54 years and WC ≥ 84 had the highest risk to develop CVDs (71%). CONCLUSION BRI and age in male and age and BMI in female had the greatest association with CVDs. Also, BRI and BMI was the strongest indices for this prediction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonylphenol (NP) is a common environmental endocrine disruptor that is associated with the development of cardiovascular disease. However, the toxic effect of NP on mitochondria in the heart of offspring to exposed individuals remains exclusive. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether perinatal NP exposure causes mitochondrial damage in the hearts of offspring of exposed individuals and determine its mechanism of action through both animal and cell experiments. METHODS AND RESULTS For the in vivo experiment, pregnant rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control group (corn oil, C), low dose group (2.5 mg/kg/day, L-NP group), medium dose group (50 mg/kg/day, M-NP group), and high dose group (100 mg/kg/day, H-NP group), with 12 rats in each group. The NP concentration in the hearts of offspring at PND21 and PND90 increased with the increase of the NP dose. Perinatal NP exposure induced a gradual increase in systolic blood pressure in offspring at PND90. In the H-NP group, there was a high degree of inflammatory cell infiltration, myofibril breaks, inconspicuous or absent nuclei, and pink collagen deposition. At PND90, the membrane integrity of mitochondria in the H-NP group was disrupted, the cristae disorder was aggravated, and there was internal lysis with vacuolation. Compared to the control group, the mitochondrial membrane potential of offspring at PND21 and PND90 was decreased in each of the NP exposure groups. NP exposure decreased the activity of mitochondrial respiratory enzyme complex I (CI) and increased the activity of mitochondrial respiratory enzyme complex IV (CIV) in the offspring. At PND21 and PND90, the mRNA and protein expression levels of cardiac mitochondrial PGC-1α, NRF-1, and TFAM decreased with increasing NP dose in a dose-dependent manner. In the in vitro experiment, H9C2 cells were divided into the following four groups: the blank group, RSV group (15 μg/ml), RSV + NP group (15 μg/ml RSV + 120 mmol/L NP), and NP group (120 mmol/L). With increasing NP concentration, the cell survival rate gradually decreased. Compared to the control, the membrane potential was significantly decreased in the NP group; the protein expression levels of SIRT1, PGC-1α, NRF-1, and TFAM in the NP group were significantly lower. CONCLUSION Perinatal NP exposure caused mitochondrial damage and dysfunction in the offspring of exposed individuals in a dose-dependent manner. This toxic effect may be related to NP-induced mitochondrial pathology in the offspring and the inhibition of both gene and protein expression involved in the PGC-1α/NRF-1/TFAM mitochondrial biogenesis signaling pathway following NP exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An elevated level of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) frequently accompanies an episode of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). However, the predictive value of cTnI in elderly SVT patients has not been examined. METHODS We collected the electronic medical records of elderly SVT patients (over 65 years old) who visited four Taiwanese emergency departments over a 2-year period. The patients who underwent cTnI testing were included in the cohort and further categorized based on their cTnI results (positive or negative). The study's primary outcomes were the 5-year risks of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and SVT recurrence. RESULTS One hundred and twenty-four patients met the inclusion criteria. Of these patients, 39 (31.5%) had a positive cTnI result, and 85 (68.5%) had a negative cTnI result. Patients with a positive cTnI result were older (p = 0.029) and had a longer hospital stay (p = 0.023) than those with a negative cTnI result. Multivariate analysis showed that age > 75 years (OR = 2.41; 95% CI 1.07-5.45; p = 0.034) was an independent predictor for cTnI elevation. In the survival analysis, no difference in the incidence of five-year MACE (p = 0.656) was observed between the cTnI-positive and cTnI-negative groups. Multivariate analysis revealed that a history of coronary artery disease was the only significant independent risk factor for MACE (HR = 4.30; 95% 95% CI 1.41-13.05; p = 0.010). For SVT recurrence, the multivariate analysis revealed that previous SVT (HR = 3.37; 95% CI 1.53-7.39; p = 0.002), smoking history (HR = 2.32; 95% CI 1.03-5.24; p = 0.043), and RFA treatment (HR = 0.20; 95% CI 0.06-0.65; p = 0.008) were significant independent predictors. CONCLUSIONS An increased cardiac troponin level may not effectively indicate the risk of MACE in elderly SVT patients. Physicians might want to be cautious when interpreting troponin test results for this specific patient group.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of aspirin in conjunction with various statins for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention in the general population of the United States (U.S.). A total of 3778 people from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2011 to 2018 were included in our analysis. After adjusting for sociodemographic and common cardiovascular risk factors, we used multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine aspirin should be combined with which type of statin for better CVD preventive effects. Subgroup analyses were carried out subsequently. In comparison to the aspirin use alone, the odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for CVD were 0.43 (0.33, 0.57), 0.69 (0.42, 1.13), 0.44 (0.31, 0.62), 0.34 (0.23, 0.50) and 0.64 (0.49, 0.84) for the combination use of aspirin and atorvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin as well as simvastatin, respectively, in the fully-adjusted model. Aspirin combined with rosuvastatin was more effective in the prevention of individual CVD, including congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina pectoris and heart attack, than aspirin combined with other statins. In conclusion, statins combined with aspirin have a clear advantage over aspirin alone in preventing CVD. In addition, when various sex, age, and fitness levels were considered, as well as with and without diabetes mellitus, the combination usage of aspirin and rosuvastatin had the greatest CVD preventive effects than aspirin coupled with other statins.

Abstract
Resident macrophages (R-mac) are a subset of macrophages with self-renewal functions, which play a pivotal role in the homeostasis, inflammation, injury, and repair of the heart. In this paper, we summarize the knowledge related to cardiac R-mac and describe their dominating functions in myocardial infarction, such as inhibiting fibrosis and adverse remodeling, promoting revascularization and improving arrhythmia, etc. In the last, we sketch out the extended application of R-mac in tissue engineering, providing a novel direction of research and application for the therapy in the future.

COVID-19 patient characteristics and time to viral clearance: A retrospective observational study in a multiethnic population (United Arab Emirates). J Clin Virol 2022; 157:105297. Abstract
BACKGROUND SARS-CoV-2 virus is the causing agent of COVID-19. The factors contributing to delayed viral clearance are still unclear. METHODS We investigated the factors influencing the time to viral clearance in COVID-19 patients using medical records from 1785 adult patients of various ethnicities treated at NMC Royal Hospital in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The Cox-proportional Hazard Model was utilized to identify risk variables for delayed viral clearance, and the Kaplan-Meier plot was used to measure the time to viral clearance among different groups. RESULTS several factors have been associated with an increased risk of delayed viral clearance, including advanced age (p = 0.006), presence of cardiovascular diseases (p = 0.016), presentation with upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) (p = 0.043), and combined gastrointestinal (GIT) and symptoms (URTI) (p = 0.012). ICU admission and severity of COVID-19 also increased the risk for delayed viral clearance (p = 0.006, p < 0.001, respectively). 'The overall median viral clearance time was 24 days. It was 32 days among patients over 60, 21 among those with URTI, GIT symptoms, and asymptomatic, 24 among diabetics, and 46.5 days among cardiovascular patients. The median time till viral clearance was 30 days among severe COVID-19 patients and 39 days among ICU-admitted patients. CONCLUSIONS We concluded that advanced age, cardiovascular comorbidities, disease presentation, and severe COVID-19 outcomes increased the risk of delayed viral clearance. Identifying these factors allow decision makers to implement an early and comprehensive management strategy to improve the outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is an essential national condition throughout China in the 21st century. Cardio-cerebral vascular disease (CCVD) is a common chronic vascular disease in the elderly. Despite aging becoming an increasingly pressing issue, there has been no comprehensive national investigation into the risk factors, prevalence, and management of CCVD among the elderly population in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS Through the 4th Survey of the Aged Population in Urban and Rural China (SSAPUR), a nationally representative sample of 224,142 adults aged more than 60 years was surveyed using a multistage, stratified sampling method. The 4th SSAPUR was used to investigate CCVD in the elderly. Univariate and multivariate logistic proportional regression analyses explored the risk factors. These risk factors were then entered into a multivariate linear regression model to identify independent predictive factors for CCVD. Disease management was assessed from the self-reported history of physician diagnosis, treatments, and hospital visits among individuals with CCVD. RESULTS After excluding samples with missing information, 215,041 individuals were included in the analysis. The overall prevalence of CCVD was 26%. Living in a rural area, being older, being female, having low literacy, smoking, getting little sleep, losing a spouse, being single, not getting enough exercise, having a bad financial situation, and not taking part in public welfare programs were the main risk factors for CCVD among the elderly in China (P < 0.05). In the multivariate linear regression model, holding all other variables at any fixed value, CCVD remained associated with "urban and rural" (β = 0.012, P < 0.001), "age" (β = -0.003, P < 0.001), "sex" (β = -0.022, P < 0.001), "education level" (β = -0.017, P < 0.001), "marriage" (β = 0.004, P = 0.047), "smoking" (β = 0.012, P = 0.003), "drinking" (β = -0.015, P = 0.001), and "sleep" (β = 0.008, P = 0.005). There were no collinearity problems among these factors. CONCLUSION Major risk factors for prevalent CCVD among the elderly in China include the following: rural residence, female, low literacy level, poor sleep quality, bereavement, non-marriage, living alone, lack of exercise, poor financial situation, and non-participation in public welfare activities. Chinese national policies for preventing, controlling, and managing risk factors for CCVD in the elderly must be urgently developed.

Abstract
Background Cardiac injuries following trauma are associated with a worse clinical outcome. So-called trauma-induced secondary cardiac injuries have been recently described after experimental long bone fracture even in absence of direct heart damage. With the progressive aging of our society, the number of elderly trauma victims rises and therefore the incidence of hip fractures increases. Hip fractures were previously shown to be associated with adverse cardiac events in elderly individuals, which have mainly been attributed to pre-conditioned cardiac diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of hip fractures on the heart in healthy young and middle-aged mice. Materials and Methods Young (12-week-old) and middle-aged (52-week-old) female C57BL/6 mice either received an intramedullary stabilized proximal femur fracture or sham treatment. The observation time points included 6 and 24 h. Systemic levels of pro-inflammatory mediators as well as local inflammation and alterations in myocardial structure, metabolism and calcium homeostasis in left ventricular tissue was analyzed following hip fracture by multiplex analysis, RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry. Results After hip fracture young and middle-aged mice showed increased systemic IL-6 and KC levels, which were significantly elevated in the middle-aged animals. Furthermore, the middle-aged mice showed enhanced myocardial expression of HMGB1, TLR2/4, TNF, IL1β and NLRP3 as well as considerable alterations in the myocardial expression of glucose- and fatty acid transporters (HFABP, GLUT4), calcium homeostasis proteins (SERCA) and cardiac structure proteins (desmin, troponin I) compared to the young animals following hip fracture. Conclusion Young and middle-aged mice showed local myocardial alterations, which might predispose for the development of secondary cardiac injury following hip fracture. Age and the age-associated phenomenon of ‘inflammaging’ seemed to be an independent risk factor aggravating and accelerating cardiac alterations following hip fracture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysregulation of some metabolic factors increases the risk of dementia. It remains unclear if overall metabolic dysregulation, or only certain components, contribute to cognitive aging and if these associations are sex specific. METHODS Data from the 2006-2016 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) was used to analyze 7 103 participants aged 65 and older at baseline (58% women). We created a metabolic-dysregulation risk score (MDRS) composed of blood pressure/hypertension status, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c)/diabetes status, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and waist circumference, and assessed cognitive trajectories from repeated measures of the HRS-Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (HRS-TICS) over 10 years of follow-up. Linear mixed-effects models estimated associations between MDRS or individual metabolic factors (biomarkers) with mean and change in HRS-TICS scores and assessed sex-modification of these associations. RESULTS Participants with higher MDRSs had lower mean HRS-TICS scores, but there were no statistically significant differences in rate of decline. Sex stratification showed this association was present for women only. MDRS biomarkers revealed heterogeneity in the strength and direction of associations with HRS-TICS. Lower HRS-TICS levels were associated with hypertension, higher HbA1c/diabetes, and lower HDL-C and TC, whereas faster rate of cognitive decline was associated with hypertension, higher HbA1c/diabetes, and higher TC. Participants with higher HbA1c/diabetes presented worse cognitive trajectories. Sex differences indicated that women with higher HbA1c/diabetes to have lower HRS-TICS levels, whereas hypertensive males presented better cognitive trajectory. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that metabolic dysregulation is more strongly associated with cognition in women compared with men, though sex differences vary by individual biomarker.

Abstract
Objective: To identify and map learning needs and educational strategies for adult patients in the preoperative period of myocardial revascularization. Materials and method: Scoping review conducted between March and April 2021 in national and international databases to identify records published in scientific journals and gray literature, without period. Results: The selected sample consisted of 35 records, composed mostly of articles (32; 91.42 %) published from 1990 to 2021. The learning needs of patients before surgery were categorized into cardiovascular system and coronary artery disease; procedures and routines before, during, and after surgery. In addition, several educational strategies implemented in the studies were identified. Conclusions: The learning needs identified can contribute to planning and implementing patient-centered educational strategies before surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The aging population is expected to reach 2 billion by 2050, but the impact of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) on the elderly has been insufficiently addressed. We aimed to clarify the prevalence of SSD in China and to identify physical and psychological differences between the elderly and non-elderly. METHODS In this prospective multi-center study, 9020 participants aged (2206 non-elderly adults and 6814 elderly adults) from 105 communities of Shanghai were included (Assessment of Somatic Symptom in Chinese Community-Dwelling People, clinical trial number NCT04815863, registered on 06/12/2020). The Somatic Symptom Scale-China (SSS-CN) questionnaire was used to measure SSD. Depressive and anxiety disorders were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), respectively. RESULTS The prevalence of SSD in the elderly was higher than that in the non-elderly (63.2% vs. 45.3%). The elderly suffered more severe SSD (20.4% moderate and severe in elderly vs. 12.0% in non-elderly) and are 1.560 times more likely to have the disorder (95%CI: 1.399-1.739; p < .001) than the non-elderly. Comorbidity of depressive or anxiety disorders was 3.7 times higher than would be expected in the general population. Additionally, the results of adjusted multivariate analyses identified older age, female sex, and comorbid physical diseases as predictive risk factors of SSD in the elderly group. CONCLUSIONS With higher prevalence of common physical problems (including hypertension, diabetes mellitus and cardio/cerebrovascular disease), the elderly in Shanghai are more vulnerable to have SSD and are more likely to suffer from comorbid depressive and anxiety disorders. SSD screening should be given more attention in the elderly, especially among older females with several comorbid physical diseases.

Abstract
Human aging is a complex phenomenon characterized by a wide spectrum of biological changes which impact on behavioral and social aspects. Age-related changes are accompanied by a decline in biological function and increased vulnerability leading to frailty, thereby advanced age is identified among the major risk factors of the main chronic human diseases. Aging is characterized by a state of chronic low-grade inflammation, also referred as inflammaging. It recognizes a multifactorial pathogenesis with a prominent role of the innate immune system activation, resulting in tissue degeneration and contributing to adverse outcomes. It is widely recognized that inflammation plays a central role in the development and progression of numerous chronic and cardiovascular diseases. In particular, low-grade inflammation, through an increased risk of atherosclerosis and insulin resistance, promote cardiovascular diseases in the elderly. Low-grade inflammation is also promoted by visceral adiposity, whose accumulation is paralleled by an increased inflammatory status. Aging is associated to increase in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), the visceral fat depot of the heart. Structural and functional changes in EAT have been shown to be associated with several heart diseases, including coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure. EAT increase is associated with a greater production and secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators and neuro-hormones, so that thickened EAT can pathologically influence, in a paracrine and vasocrine manner, the structure and function of the heart and is associated to a worse cardiovascular outcome. In this review, we will discuss the evidence underlying the interplay between inflammaging, EAT accumulation and cardiovascular diseases. We will examine and discuss the importance of EAT quantification, its characteristics and changes with age and its clinical implication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effects of fatigue on health in older age are well studied, yet little is known about the clinical relevance of energy perception. AIMS To explore cross-sectional associations of self-reported energy with physical and mental health metrics in the Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study. METHODS Participants rated their energy from 0 to 10; the outcome was energy dichotomized at the median (≥ 7 = higher energy). Four domains were assessed: depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale); physical performance (function: usual and rapid gait speed; fitness: 400-m walk time); physical activity (casual walking, walking for exercise, and intense exercise); and cognitive function (Modified Mini-Mental State Examination and Digit Symbol Substitution Test). Covariates bivariately associated with energy entered a multivariable logistic regression model, adjusted for demographics, chronic conditions, and strength. RESULTS Depressive symptoms, physical performance and activity, but not cognition, were bivariately associated with energy (p < 0.0005). Younger age, male sex, greater strength, and absence of chronic conditions predicted higher energy (p < 0.001). In a multivariable model, depressive symptoms [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 95% CI 0.69 (0.62, 0.76)] and 400-m walk times [aOR = 0.81 (0.72, 0.91)] were inversely associated with energy; usual and rapid gait speed [aOR = 1.3 (1.2, 1.4); aOR = 1.2 (1.1-1.4)], and time spent in intense exercise [aOR = 1.4 (1.1-1.7)] were positively associated with energy. DISCUSSION In this cohort with a range of chronic conditions and fatigue, perceiving higher energy levels may reflect better emotional and physical health. CONCLUSION Energy should be considered in multidimensional clinical assessments of older age.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Despite considerable progress in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of CVDs, new diagnostic biomarkers and new therapeutic measures are urgently needed to reduce the mortality of CVDs and improve the therapeutic effect. RNA methylations regulate almost all aspects of RNA processing, such as RNA nuclear export, translation, splicing and non-coding RNA processing. In view of the importance of RNA methylations in the pathogenesis of diseases, this work reviews the molecular structures, biological functions of five kinds of RNA methylations (m6A, m5C, m1a, m6am and m7G) and their effects on CVDs, including pulmonary hypertension, hypertension, vascular calcification, cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure. In CVDs, m6A “writers” catalyze the installation of m6A on RNAs, while “erasers” remove these modifications. Finally, the “readers” of m6A further influence the mRNA splicing, nuclear export, translation and degradation. M5C, m1A, m6Am and m7G are new types of RNA methylations, their roles in CVDs need to be further explored. RNA methylations have become a new research hotspot and the roles in CVDs is gradually emerging, the review of the molecular characteristics, biological functions and effects of RNA methylation on CVDs will contribute to the elucidation of the pathological mechanisms of CVDs and the discovery of new diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets of CVDs.

Abstract
PURPOSE To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to elucidate the effects of raloxifene on the lipid profile in elderly individuals. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs was performed following the PRISMA statement. Data on triglycerides (TGs), total cholesterol (TC), HDL-C, and LDL-C were extracted. Relevant publications up to October 2020 were detected through searches in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases. Changes were reported as weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% CIs using random-effects models. FINDINGS Nine studies were selected, with a duration of intervention ranging from 2 and 12 months and a raloxifene dose of 60 to 120 mg/d. Studies were performed in healthy individuals and in those with disorders, such as osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and kidney disease required long-term hemodialysis. Overall, TG (WMD, -6.50 mg/dL; 95% CI, -34.18 to 21.20 mg/eL; P = 0.646), LDL-C (WMD, -17.86 mg/dL; 95% CI, -42.44 to 6.72 mg/dL; P = 0.154), and HDL-C (WMD, 2.35 mg/dL; 95% CI, -1.14 to 5.84 mg/dL; P = 0.187) levels did not change significantly after the administration of raloxifene. In contrast, TC levels decreased after raloxifene therapy (WMD, -6.59 mg/dL; 95% CI, -13.13 to -0.05 mg/dL; P = 0.048). IMPLICATIONS Raloxifene therapy decreased TC levels but did not alter TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C concentrations in elderly individuals. Regarding the LDL-C levels, although the finding lacked statistical significance, we believe that there was a mean reduction that deserves further clinical attention as much as TC.

Abstract
Introduction: Cardiometabolic diseases are a global public health problem, with significant increases in their prevalence. Different epigenetic factors involved in the progression of metabolic alterations have been described, such as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). H19 is a multifunctional lncRNA expressed from the maternal allele, with low expression after birth, except in the skeletal muscle and heart. Recent studies have linked its dysregulation to alterations in cell metabolism.Areas covered: H19 plays a role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatic and renal fibrosis, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation. H19 acts mainly as a competitive endogenous RNA of molecules involved in pathways that regulate cell metabolism. In this review, we analyzed the dysregulation of H19 in cardiometabolic diseases and its relationship with molecular alterations in different signaling pathways.Expert opinion: The association of H19 with the development of cardiometabolic diseases, indicates that H19 could be a therapeutic target and prognostic biomarker for these diseases. Controversies have been reported regarding the expression of H19 in some metabolic diseases, therefore, it is necessary to continue research to clarify its pathogenic effect in different organs.

Abstract
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is very commonly performed among the cardiovascular surgeries, and delayed recovery (DR) is a kind of serious complications in patients with CPB. It is necessary to assess the risk factors for DR in patients with CPB, to provide evidence into the management of CPB patients.Patients undergoing CPB in our hospital from January 2018 to March 2020 were included. Cases that consciousness has not recovered 12 hours after anesthesia were considered as DR. The preoperative and intraoperative variables of CPB patients were collected and analyzed. Logistic regressions were conducted to analyze the potential influencing factor.A total of 756 CPB patients were included, and the incidence of DR was 9.79%. There were significant differences on the age, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), glutamic pvruvic transaminase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine (SCr) between patients with and without DR (all P < .05); there were no significant differences in the types of surgical procedure (all P > .05); there were significant differences on the duration of CPB, duration of aortic cross clamp (ACC), duration of surgery, minimum nasopharyngeal temperature, and transfusion of packed red blood cells between patients with and without DR (all P < .05). Logistic regression analysis indicated that duration of CPB ≥132 minutes (odds ratio [OR] 4.12, 1.02-8.33), BUN ≥9 mmol/L (OR 4.05, 1.37-8.41), infusion of red blood cell suspension (OR 3.93, 1.25-7.63), duration of surgery ≥350 minutes (OR 3.17, 1.24-5.20), age ≥6 (OR 3.01, 1.38-6.84) were the independent risk factors for DR in patients with CPB (all P < .05).Extra attention and care are needed for those CPB patients with duration of CPB ≥132 minutes, BUN ≥9 mmol/L, infusion of red blood cell suspension, duration of surgery ≥350 minutes, and age ≥60.

Abstract
We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effects of magnesium (Mg) supplementation on the lipid profile in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients. Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Embase databases were searched to infinity until 30 January 2020. Weighted mean differences (WMD) were pooled using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were reported using standard methods. The pooled analysis of 12 randomized controlled trial s indicated that Mg administration led to significant reduction of serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (p = 0.006). However, our results revealed that Mg supplementation did not have any effect on triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) serum concentrations among T2DM patients in comparison with the control group. Subgroup analysis based on duration of study suggested that more than 12 weeks of Mg supplementation significantly decreased the serum TC levels (p = 0.002). Subgroup analysis comparing the dose of intervention indicated that Mg supplementation less than 300 mg significantly decreased the serum LDL concentrations (p < 0.001), while more than 300 mg of Mg supplementation significantly increased the serum HDL levels (p = 0.026). In a subgroup analysis comparing the type of intervention, it displayed that inorganic Mg supplementation decreased the LDL (p < 0.001) and TC (p = 0.003) levels, while organic Mg supplementation showed no difference. Mg supplementation has a beneficial effect on lowering LDL level in T2DM patients. However, we have to note that any research performed so far is not sufficient for making robust guidelines to use Mg supplementation in clinical practice.

Abstract
Background-Dyslipidemia is one of the prominent risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide. Dyslipidemia has various causes, including metabolic capacity, genetic problems, physical inactivity, and dietary habits. This study aimed to determine the association between dyslipidemia and exposure to heavy metals in adults. Methods-Using data from the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2017), 5345 participants aged ≥20 years who were tested for heavy metal levels were analyzed in this study. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to assess the factors affecting the prevalence of dyslipidemia. Results-The risks of dyslipidemia among all and male participants with mercury (Hg) levels of ≥2.75 μg/L (corresponding to the Korean average level) were 1.273 and 1.699 times higher than in those with levels of <2.75 μg/L, respectively. The factors that significantly affected the dyslipidemia risk were age, household income, body mass index, and subjective health status in both males and females. Conclusions-In adult males, exposure to Hg at higher-than-average levels was positively associated with dyslipidemia. These results provide a basis for targeted prevention strategies for dyslipidemia using lifestyle guidelines for reducing Hg exposure and healthy behavioral interventions.

Cardiovascular aging in humans is characterized by structural pathologic remodeling including cardiac and vascular fibrosis, hypertrophy, stiffness, micro- and macro-circulatory impairment, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction precipitating heart failure with either reduced or preserved ejection fraction, and cardiovascular cell death. Cellular senescence, an important hallmark of aging, is a critical factor that impairs repair and regeneration of damaged cells in cardiovascular tissues whereas autophagy, an intracellular catabolic process is an essential inherent mechanism that removes senescent cells throughout life time in all tissues. Several recent reviews have highlighted the fact that all longevity treatment paradigms to mitigate progression of aging-related pathologies converge in induction of autophagy, activation of AMP kinase (AMPK) and Sirtuin pathway, and inhibition of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). These longevity treatments include health style changes such as caloric restriction, and drug treatments using rapamycin, the first FDA-approved longevity drug, as well as other experimental longevity drugs such as metformin, rapamycin, aspirin, and resveratrol. However, in the heart tissue, autophagy induction has to be tightly regulated since evidence show excessive autophagy results in cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Here we discuss emerging evidence for microRNA-mediated tight regulation of autophagy in the heart in response to treatment with rapamycin, and novel approaches to monitor autophagy progression in a temporal manner to diagnose and regulate autophagy induction by longevity treatments.

Abstract
Several epidemiological studies demonstrate that moderate (red) wine consumption may afford protection against cardiovascular diseases. Protection is ascribed to the biological activity of wine components, many of which, however, are discarded during winemaking. In vitro rat thoracic aorta rings contracted with phenylephrine or KCl were used to assess the vasorelaxant activity of extracts from wine pomaces (seeds and skins) of the Calabrian autochthonous grape variety Magliocco dolce (Arvino). NMR spectroscopy was used to ascertain their chemical composition. Data demonstrate that seed and skin, but not must, extracts are capable of relaxing vascular preparations in an endothelium-dependent manner, similarly to the red wine extract, due to the presence of comparable amounts of bioactive constituents. In rings pre-contracted with 20–30 mM KCl, only seed extracts showed a moderate relaxation. The most efficacious vasodilating extract (wine) showed a good antioxidant profile in both [(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl)acid] radical (DPPH) and [2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] radical (ABTS) assays. In conclusion, winemaking from Magliocco dolce grape can provide potentially health-promoting by-products useful in cardiovascular disease management.
