Abstract
Isocyanates play an essential role in modern manufacturing processes, especially in polyurethane production. There are numerous synthesis strategies for isocyanates both under industrial and laboratory conditions, which do not prevent searching for alternative highly efficient synthetic protocols. Here, we report a detailed theoretical investigation of the mechanism of sulfur dioxide-catalyzed rearrangement of phenylnitrile oxide into phenyl isocyanate, which was first reported in 1977. The DLPNO-CCSD(T) method and up-to-date DFT protocols were used to perform a highly accurate quantum-chemical study of the rearrangement mechanism. An overview of various organic and inorganic catalysts has revealed other potential catalysts, such as sulfur trioxide and selenium dioxide. Furthermore, the present study elucidated how substituents in phenylnitrile oxide influence reaction kinetics. This study was performed by a self-organized collaboration of scientists initiated by a humorous post on the VK social network.

Abstract
The α-hydroxyethyl radical (CH3·CHOH, 2A) is a key intermediate in ethanol biochemistry, combustion, atmospheric chemistry, radiation chemistry, and astrochemistry. Experimental data on the vibrational spectrum of this radical are crucially important for reliable detection and understanding of the chemical dynamics of this species. This study represents the first detailed experimental report on the infrared absorption bands of the α-hydroxyethyl radical complemented by ab initio computations. The radical was generated in solid para-H2 and Xe matrices via the reactions of hydrogen atoms with matrix-isolated ethanol molecules and radiolysis of isolated ethanol molecules with x rays. The absorption bands with maxima at 3654.6, 3052.1, 1425.7, 1247.9, 1195.6 (1177.4), and 1048.4 cm-1, observed in para-H2 matrices appearing upon the H· atom reaction, were attributed to the OHstr, α-CHstr, CCstr, COstr + CCObend, COstr, and CCstr + CCObend vibrational modes of the CH3·CHOH radical, respectively. The absorption bands with the positions slightly red-shifted from those observed in para-H2 were detected in both the irradiated and post-irradiation annealed Xe matrices containing C2H5OH. The results of the experiments with the isotopically substituted ethanol molecules (CH3CD2OH and CD3CD2OH) and the quantum-chemical computations at the UCCSD(T)/L2a_3 level support the assignment. The photolysis with ultraviolet light (240-300 nm) results in the decay of the α-hydroxyethyl radical, yielding acetaldehyde and its isomer, vinyl alcohol. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical results suggests that the radical adopts the thermodynamically more stable anti-conformation in both matrices.

Abstract
The radiation- and chemically-induced radicals from tributyl phosphate (TBP) have been characterized by EPR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The yield of X-ray-generated TBP radicals measured by a PBN spin trap is 0.22 μmol J-1 (2.1 radicals/100 eV) at room temperature (298 K). The EPR spectra obtained by irradiating TBP with an electron beam at 77 K are in close agreement with literature data for samples irradiated with gamma- and X-rays [https://doi.org/10.1007/BF02165504, https://doi.org/10.1016/1359-0197(89)90319-6]. Possible conformers of alkyl-type, TBP-derived radicals were analyzed by Density Functional Theory calculations. The main contribution to the experimental spectrum at 77 K is shown to be made by a conformer of the CH3˙CHCH2-radical, which contains all carbon atoms of the butyl group in the same plane. The EPR spectra of TBP radicals induced by the OH radical in aqueous solution were measured for the first time using a continuous flow system. The formation of the alkyl-type TBP radicals CH3˙CHCH2-, ˙CH2CH2-, and -CH2˙CHO- in the ratio of 5/4/1 was detected; their spectral assignment was based on quantum chemical calculations with rotational averaging of HFC constants for the corresponding beta- and alpha-protons.

Abstract
Using the [3+2] cycloaddition reaction of [HC≡C-GePh2 -]2 (1) and a number of RCH2 N3 , this work described the synthesis of a series of novel heterocyclic digermanes, bitriazoles [1,4-C2 HN3 (CH2 R)GePh2 -]2 , 2-12 (R=Ph, p-Tol, p-C6 H4 NMe2 , p-C6 H4 OMe, p-C6 H4 Br, m-C6 H4 NO2 , 2-Naphth, CH2 -p-OC6 H4 CHO, CH2 -p-OC6 H4 COOMe, CH2 P(O)(OEt)2 , COOEt), difficult to produce by other methods. The structural peculiarities of these compounds were studied in detail by NMR spectroscopy and by XRD analysis (for 6, 9 and 10). The properties of 1-12 were studied by UV/vis and luminescence emission spectroscopy, electrochemistry and DFT calculations, indicating an effective conjugation in their molecules.

Abstract
CONTEXT The interaction of norbornadiene (NBD) and norbornene (NBE) with the palladium (111) and (100) surfaces have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Five configurations of adsorbed NBD may be formed on Pd(111): endo-tetra-σ, endo-di-σ,π, endo-di-π, exo-di-σ, and exo-π. The NBE molecule adsorbed on Pd(111) may exist in 4 configurations: endo-di-σ, endo-π, exo-di-σ, and exo-π. On Pd(100), a smaller number adsorption configurations of NBD and NBE are formed, since the double bonds of these molecules in the endo-orientation are bound only in a di-σ mode. The adsorption energy of NBD and NBE molecules on Pd(100) is noticeably higher compared to Pd(111), which is due to the surface geometry of Pd(100). The most stable configurations on both Pd facets are endo-tetra-σ for NBD and exo-di-σ for NBE. However, due to smaller adsorption area of the exo-di-σ configuration on Pd(111), a larger number of NBD molecules may adsorbed on the same surface area. Energetically favorable endo-tetra-σ (NBD) and exo-di-σ (NBE) configurations are very mobile on Pd(111). On Pd(100), only NBE molecules can migrate, while NBD migration is hindered due to the high activation barrier. METHODS All DFT calculations were performed using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof density functional (PBE) with the relativistic SBK effective core potential and TZ2P basis set in the PRIRODA program.

Abstract
A reaction of acyl chlorides derived from 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acids with piperazine allows the preparation of the corresponding 24-membered macrocycles in good yield. The structural and spectral properties of these new macrocyclic ligands were thoroughly investigated, revealing promising coordination properties towards f-elements (Am, Eu). It was shown that the prepared ligands can be used for selective extraction of Am(III) from alkaline-carbonate media in presence of Eu(III) with an SFAm/Eu up to 40. Their extraction efficiency is higher than calixarene-type extraction of the Am(III) and Eu(III) pair. Composition of macrocycle-metal complex with Eu(III) was investigated by luminescence and UV-vis spectroscopy. The possibility of such ligands to form complexes of L:Eu = 1:2 stoichiometry is revealed.

Abstract
Here, we report the study results of the nitration of 3,7,10-trioxo-2,4,6,8,9,11-hexaaza[3.3.3]propellane (THAP) by different nitrating agents such as nitric acid, mixed nitric/sulfuric acids, nitric anhydride, and mixed concentrated nitric acid/acetic anhydride to furnish 3,7,10-trioxo-2-nitro-2,4,6,8,9,11-hexaaza[3.3.3]propellane and 3,7,10-trioxo-2,8-dinitro-2,4,6,8,9,11-hexaaza[3.3.3]propellane, whereas a lactam-lactim rearrangement was found to take place upon vigorous cooling to give 10-hydroxy-2,4,6,8,9,11-hexaazatricyclo[3.3.3.01,5]undec-9-ene-3,7-dione. The two competing reactions, lactam-lactim rearrangement, and nitration were found to take place. The acylation of 3,7,10-trioxo-2,4,6,8,9,11-hexaaza[3.3.3]propellane was examined and the formation conditions of 2,6-di- and 2,6,9-triacetyl-substituted and 3,7,10-trioxo-2,4,6,8,9,11-hexaacetyl-2,4,6,8,9,11-hexaaza[3.3.3]propellane were established. The acetyl derivatives were found to be instable in an acidic medium and to undergo deacylation. The obtained findings correlate well with the quantum-chemical calculations.

Abstract
The NH3···CO complex can be considered an important building block for cold synthetic astrochemistry leading to the formation of complex organic molecules, including key prebiotic species. In this work, we have studied the radiation-induced transformations of this complex in Ar, Kr, and Xe matrices using FTIR spectroscopy. On the basis of comparison with the quantum chemical calculations at the CCSD(T)/L2a_3 level of theory, it was found that the initial complex had the configuration with hydrogen bonding through the carbon atom of CO. Irradiation of the matrix isolated complex with X-rays at 6 K leads to the formation of a number of synthetic products, namely, HNCO (in all matrices), formamide NH2CHO, NH2CO, and HNCO-H2 (in argon and krypton). The matrix effect on the product distribution was explained by the involvement of different excited states of the complex in their formation. It was suggested that formamide results from the singlet excited states while other species mainly originate from triplet excited states. The latter states are efficiently populated through ion-electron recombination (in all matrices) and through intersystem crossing (particularly, in xenon). High yield of the recombination triplet states is a feature of the processes induced by high-energy radiation (in contrast to direct photolysis). NCO, CN, and NO were found as minor secondary products at high adsorbed doses. The astrochemical implications of the obtained results are discussed.

Abstract
The family of isomeric H2C3O+• radical cations is of great interest for physical organic chemistry and chemistry occurring in extraterrestrial media. In this work, we have experimentally examined a unique synthetic route to the generation of H2C3O+• from the C2H2···CO intermolecular complex and also considered the relative stability and monomolecular transformations of the H2C3O+• isomers through high-level ab initio calculations. The structures, energetics, harmonic frequencies, hyperfine coupling constants, and isomerization pathways for several of the most important H2C3O+• isomers were calculated at the UCCSD(T) level of theory. The complementary FTIR and EPR studies in argon matrices at 5 K have demonstrated that the ionized C2H2···CO complex transforms into the E-HCCHCO+• isomer, and this latter species is supposed to be the key intermediate in further chemical transformations, providing a remarkable piece of evidence for kinetic control in low-temperature chemistry. Photolysis of this species at λ = 410-465 nm results in its transformation to the thermodynamically most stable H2CCCO+• isomer. Possible implications of the results and potentiality of the proposed synthetic strategy to the preparation of highly reactive organic radical cations are discussed.

Abstract
Difluoromethane is considered among the environment friendly alternatives to the ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons. Due to its chemical inertness and lack of UV absorption above 200 nm, this compound can easily come to the upper layers forming complexes with widely abundant atmospheric components, such as water. The radiation-induced degradation of this compound and its complexes may be significant for reliable prediction of its long-term evolution in the environment as well as for development of new ways for its removal. In this work we have studied the vibrational spectroscopic properties and mechanisms of the radiation-induced decay of the CH2F2⋯H2O under the action of X-rays using matrix isolation FTIR spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The IR spectrum of the complex in an argon matrix was characterized for the first time and assigned to a hydrogen-bonded structure with a binding energy of 11.1 kJ/mol (2.65 kcal/mol) (CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory). Complexation with water leads to a certain suppression of the efficiency of the radiation-induced decomposition of difluoromethane. The obtained results provide evidence for the radiation-induced formation of previously unreported CF2⋯H2O complex (in addition to other oxygen containing molecules, such as COF2 and CO). As demonstrated by calculations, the new difluorocarbene complex reveals a hydrogen bond and it is characterized by a binding energy of 5.73 kJ/mol (1.37 kcal/mol) (CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory).

Abstract
Reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is an important task in a frame of ecology and rational use of natural resources. Uranium, as the main component of SNF (>95%), can be recovered for further use as fresh nuclear fuel. To minimize an amount of solid radioactive waste generated during SNF reprocessing, new extractants are under investigation. Diamides of 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid are perspective tetradentate N-donor ligands that form strong complexes with f-elements, which are soluble in polar organic solvents. As an example of three ligands of this class, we conducted a comparative study and showed how the substituent in the amide functional group affects the extraction ability toward uranyl nitrate from nitric acid media. We have performed a careful study (NMR, FT-IR, XRD, RMC-EXAFS) of the structures of synthesized complexes of new ligands with uranyl nitrate and used quantum mechanical calculations to explain the discovered regularities through.

Abstract
Nitriles are important constituents of extraterrestrial media. Nitriles are supposed to play a crucial role in prebiotic chemistry occurring in the interstellar medium. In this work, we have investigated the low-temperature radiation-induced transformations of a 1 : 1 CH4HCN complex as a plausible precursor of the simplest nitriles using the matrix isolation approach with FTIR spectroscopic detection. The parent complexes isolated in a noble gas (Ng) matrix were obtained by deposition of the CH4/HCN/Ng gaseous mixture and characterized by comparison of experimental complexation-induced shifts of the HCN fundamentals with the results of the ab initio calculations. It was found that the X-ray irradiation of low-temperature matrices containing the isolated 1 : 1 CH4HCN complex resulted in the formation of acetonitrile (CH3CN) and isoacetonitrile (CH3NC) and it appears to be the first experimental evidence for the formation of C2 nitriles (acetonitrile and isoacetonitrile) from such a "building block". Additionally, a 1 : 1 CH4HNC complex was tentatively assigned to the irradiated Ar and Kr matrices. It is demonstrated that the matrix has a strong effect on the CH3CN/CH3NC yield ratio, which dramatically increases in the row Ar < Kr < Xe. Also, the efficiency of the radiation-induced formation of the CH4HNC complex was shown to decrease from Ar to Kr. It is believed that the proposed pathway for acetonitrile formation may be a significant step in the radiation-induced evolution leading to complex organic molecules and biomolecules under astrochemical conditions. Furthermore, the obtained results provide a prominent example of the impact of very weak intermolecular interactions on the radiation-induced transformations in cold media.

Abstract
Copper-exchanged zeolites are useful for stepwise conversion of methane to methanol at moderate temperatures. This process also generates some over-oxidation products like CO and CO2 . However, mechanistic pathways for methane over-oxidation by copper-oxo active sites in these zeolites have not been previously described. Adequate understanding of methane over-oxidation is useful for developing systems with higher methanol yields and selectivities. Here, we use density functional theory (DFT) to examine methane over-oxidation by [Cu3 O3 ]2+ active sites in zeolite mordenite MOR. The methyl group formed after activation of a methane C-H bond can be stabilized at a μ-oxo atom of the active site. This μ-(O-CH3 ) intermediate can undergo sequential hydrogen atom abstractions till eventual formation of a copper-monocarbonyl species. Adsorbed formaldehyde, water and formates are also formed during this process. The overall mechanistic path is exothermic, and all intermediate steps are facile at 200 °C. Release of CO from the copper-monocarbonyl costs only 3.4 kcal/mol. Thus, for high methanol selectivities, the methyl group from the first hydrogen atom abstraction step must be stabilized away from copper-oxo active sites. Indeed, it must be quickly trapped at an unreactive site (short diffusion lengths) while avoiding copper-oxo species (large paths between active sites). This stabilization of the methyl group away from the active sites is central to the high methanol selectivities obtained with stepwise methane-to-methanol conversion.

Abstract
A hydrogen-bonded CHF⋯HF complex was characterized by FTIR matrix isolation spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Three possible structures of this complex were found at the coupled-cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)/L3a_3] level of theory. The comparison between the experiment and theory reveals that the most stable structure with the binding energy of 6.48 kcal/mol is formed upon x-ray irradiation of isolated CH2F2 molecules in noble gas matrices (Ne, Ar, Xe). This species appears to be the first known intermolecular complex of monofluorocarbene, and its identification was unambiguously proved by IR absorptions corresponding to HF deformation (libration), CF stretching, H-C-F bending, and CH and HF stretching modes. It is worth noting that the corresponding spectral features in an argon matrix were previously tentatively ascribed to CH2F2 +· and HF⋯CHF-· [L. Andrews and F. T. Prochaska, J. Chem. Phys. 70, 4714 (1979)], but the calculations performed in the present study definitely support the re-assignment. The observed CHF⋯HF complex can be converted to the parent CH2F2 under the action of light with λ < 525 nm. The plausible mechanism of this conversion using the conical intersection concept is discussed.

Abstract
The mechanism of the noncatalytic bromination of carboranes was studied experimentally and theoretically. We found that the reactions of o- and m-carboranes 1 and 2 with elemental bromine are first order in the substrate but unusually high (approximately fifth) order in bromine. The calculated energy barriers of these reactions decrease sharply as more bromine molecules are added to the quantum-chemical system. A considerable primary deuterium kinetic isotope effect for the bromination of 2 indicates that the rate-limiting stage is B-H bond breakage. According to quantum-chemical reaction path calculations, the bond breakage proceeds after the intrusion of a bromine atom into the B-H σ-bond. The 9-Br and 9-OH substituents in carborane 1 strongly retard the bromination of the corresponding derivatives. The bromination mechanism of 9-OH-1 is complex and includes neutral, deprotonated, and protonated forms of the carborane. The high experimental kinetic reaction order in bromine, together with quantum chemical modeling, points to a specific mechanism of bromination facilitated by anionic bromine clusters which significantly stabilize the transition state.

Abstract
Cost-effectiveness and accuracy are two basic pillars in electronic structure calculations. While cost-effectiveness enhances applicability, high accuracy is sustained when employing advanced computational tools. With the gold standard method of ab initio quantum chemistry at the focal point, canonical CCSD(T) and modern explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-F12 calculations are employed hand in hand to develop accurate hybrid post-CBS extrapolation schemes, which are validated using popular training sets involving a total of 130 molecules. By using raw valence-only calculations at CCSD(T)/VDZ and CCSD(T)/VQZ-F12 levels of theory, the novel scheme leads to the prediction of absolute energies that differ on average (-0.170 ± 0.224) kcal mol-1 from the highest affordable CCSD(T)-F12b/V(Q,5)Z-F12 extrapolations, but only (-0.048 ± 0.228) kcal mol-1 from the post-CBS extrapolated values based on CBS(D,T), CBS(D,Q) and CBS(T,Q) energies. From the cost-effectiveness standpoint, the approach is a kind of pseudo one-point extrapolation scheme since its cost is basically that of the highest-rung raw energy where it is based. Variants that imply no additional cost are also discussed, emerging h-pCBS(dt,dq)ab as the most effective. The approach can also be used with PNO-based local correlation methods that gained popularity due to allowing coupled-cluster calculations even for large molecules at reduced computational cost, namely local PNO-CCSD(T) and PNO-CCSD(T)-F12b. To gauge the approach performance, both the hydrogen molecule and the O-C2H5 torsion path of ethyl-methyl-ether, an extra molecule here considered with presupposed existence in astrophysical objects, are also studied. Additionally, the nonbonding interactions in the A24 test set are revisited per se. The results show that the title approach may be useful in high-accuracy quantum chemistry, with further improvements requiring the inclusion of contributions beyond the theory here employed such as the ones due to relativistic and nonadiabatic effects.

Abstract
A general procedure for the optimization of atomic density-fitting basis functions is designed with the balance between accuracy and numerical stability in mind. Given one-electron wavefunctions and energies, weights are assigned to the product densities, modeling their contribution to the exchange and second-order correlation energy, and a simple weighted error measure is minimized. Generally contracted Gaussian auxiliary basis sets are optimized to match the wavefunction basis sets [D. N. Laikov, Theor. Chem. Acc. 138, 40 (2019)] for all 102 elements in a scalar-relativistic approximation [D. N. Laikov, J. Chem. Phys. 150, 061103 (2019)].

Abstract
Since there is no exact solution for problems in physics and chemistry, extrapolation methods may assume a key role in quantitative quantum chemistry. Two topics where it bears considerable impact are addressed, both at the heart of computational quantum chemistry: electronic structure and reaction dynamics. In the first, the problem of extrapolating the energy obtained by solving the electronic Schrödinger equation to the limit of the complete one-electron basis set is addressed. With the uniform-singlet-and-triplet-extrapolation (USTE) scheme at the focal point, the emphasis is on recent updates covering from the energy itself to other molecular properties. The second topic refers to extrapolation of quantum mechanical reactive scattering probabilities from zero total angular momentum to any of the values that it may assume when running quasiclassical trajectories, QCT/QM-[Formula: see text]J. With the extrapolation guided in both cases by physically motivated asymptotic theories, realism is seeked by avoiding unsecure jumps into the unknown. Although, mostly review oriented, a few issues are addressed for the first time here and there. Prospects for future work conclude the overview.

Abstract
Pyrene-based cyclophanes have been synthesized with the aim to realize a bellows-type sensing mechanism for the ratiometric detection of nucleotide concentrations in a buffered aqueous solution. The sensing mechanism involves the encapsulation of a nucleobase between two pyrene rings, which affects the monomer-excimer equilibrium of the receptor in the excited state. The nature of the spacer and its connection pattern to pyrene rings have been varied to achieve high selectivity for ATP. The 1,8-substituted pyrene-based cyclophane with the 2,2'-diaminodiethylamine spacer demonstrates the best selectivity for ATP showing a 50-fold increase in the monomer-excimer emission ratio upon saturation with the nucleotide. The receptor can detect ATP within the biological concentrations range over a wide pH range. NMR and spectroscopic studies have revealed the importance of hydrogen bonding and stacking interactions for achieving a required receptor selectivity. The probe has been successfully applied for the real-time monitoring of creatine kinase activity.

Abstract
An attractive strategy for C-Se bond formation by Ullmann-type copper(I)-promoted cross-coupling is developed. A wide range of aryliodides reacts with various disubstituted 2-selenohydantoins under mild conditions and provides Se-arylated imidazolines in moderate to high yields. Computational mechanistic studies show the oxidative addition/intramolecular reductive elimination likely to be the lowest-energy pathway. Cytotoxic activity of all 43 reaction products has been tested in vitro against MCF7 and A549 cancer cell lines with VA13 and MCF10a control cells.

Abstract
Density functionals with a range-separated treatment of the exchange energy are known to improve upon their semilocal forerunners and fixed-fraction hybrids. The conversion of a given semilocal functional into its short-range analog is not straightforward, however, and not even unique, because the latter has a higher information content that has to be recovered in some way. Simple models of the spherically averaged exchange hole as an interpolation between the uniform electron gas limit and a few-term Hermite function are developed here for use with generalized-gradient approximations, so that the energy density of the error-function-weighted Coulomb interaction is given by explicit closed-form expressions in terms of elementary and error functions. For comparison, some new nonoscillatory models in the spirit of earlier works are also built and studied; the energy densities from both kinds of models match rather closely (within less than 5%), but the latter slightly mismatches (by about 1%) the exact uniform electron gas limit.
