Abstract
Preparation for oxidative stress (POS) has been widely reported in animals under controlled laboratory conditions, but whether this phenomenon is visible in animals under natural conditions remains to be explored. Altitudinal gradients provide a good opportunity to address this question, since environmental conditions become more hostile with increasing altitude. Here, we investigated the levels of oxidative stress, oxidative damage, and antioxidant defenses in Chinese toads (Bufo gargarizans) along an altitudinal gradient (50 m, 1200 m, 2300 m, 3400 m above sea level). The results show that changing altitude led to a significantly lower ratio of oxidized to reduced glutathione in liver, with a higher value at 50 m. This ratio in muscle tissues did not differ significantly between altitudes of 50 m, 2300 m, and 3400 m. However, reduced glutathione content increased significantly along the altitude, with higher values in liver at 2300 m and higher values in skeletal muscle at 3400 m. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content in liver did not change significantly with increasing altitude. Brain and muscle tissues showed a higher MDA content at 50 m than the other three altitudes. The activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase, as well as total antioxidant capacity, also displayed tissue-specific upregulation in heart, skeletal muscle, and brain, but all of these antioxidant enzymes except for glutathione-S-transferase were significantly reduced in liver along the altitudinal gradient. In summary, environmental factors at higher altitude did not lead to higher levels of oxidative stress and oxidative damage in B. gargarizans, mainly due to stronger antioxidant defenses. This study corroborates the occurrence of POS in high-altitude toads living under field conditions and contributes to revealing the biochemical adaptations to extreme environments at higher altitude.

Abstract
Fugitive dust emissions play an important role in urban air quality. Much research on fugitive dust's effects has focused on human health and societal impacts, with limited work investigating effects on other species. The endangered Apodemia mormo langei butterfly is endemic to the Antioch Dunes, a small area on the south bank of the San Joaquin River in northern California, largely protected as a National Wildlife Refuge. Between the two protected portions of the dunes is a gypsum processing facility. Deposition of gypsum dust may adversely affect endangered insects, especially in their vulnerable larval life stage. Persistent westerly winds blow from the western section of the refuge, across the industrial facility, to the eastern protected dune area. Ambient particulate matter (PM) was collected at 30 sites in both sections of the refuge using passive samplers deployed at times matching the butterfly life cycle. The prevailing wind maintained upwind-downwind sampling orientation throughout the study. PM samples were analyzed for total mass, and elemental composition via X-ray fluorescence. Downwind concentrations of gypsum-related elements were between 4 (strontium) and 12 (sulfur) times higher than upwind loadings, suggesting deposition of PM from the gypsum facility. The effect of fugitive emissions was strongest at the industrial facility's fenceline, closest to a conveyor belt that loads gypsum. Combined with documented reductions in insect larval longevity when exposed to gypsum dust, the results suggest that gypsum deposition may be affecting the ecosystem and endangered species in the downwind unit of the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge.Implications: Fugitive dust has impacts not only on humans, but on other organisms. The Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge (ADNWR) in California, set aside to protect the endangered Apodemia mormo langei butterfly, consists of two land units separated by a gypsum processing facility in between them. In this study, we demonstrate fugitive gypsum dust deposition on the downwind unit of the ADNWR, which may impact the endangered butterfly and its ecosystem.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanistic implications behind wildlife responses to global changes is a central topic in eco-evolutionary research. In particular, anthropic pollution is known to impact wild populations across the globe, which may have even stronger consequences for species with complex life cycles. Among vertebrates, amphibians represent a paradigmatic example of metamorphosis, and their characteristics make them highly vulnerable to pollution. Here, we tested for differences in the redox status, telomere length, and locomotor performance across life stages of green frogs (Pelophylax perezi) from agrosystem and natural habitats, both constitutively and in response to an experimental ammonium exposure (10 mg/L). We found that larvae from the agrosystem constitutively showed an enhanced redox status (better antioxidant balance against H2O2, lower lipid peroxidation) but shorter telomeres as compared to larvae from the natural environment. The larval redox response to ammonium was, overall, similar in both habitats. In contrast, after metamorphosis, the redox status of individuals from the natural habitat seemed to cope better with ammonium exposure (denoted by lower lipid peroxidation), and differences between habitats in telomere length were no longer present. Intriguingly, while the swimming performance of larvae did not correlate with individual's physiology, metamorphs with lower glutathione reductase activity and longer telomeres had a better jumping performance. This may suggest that locomotor performance is both traded off with the production of reactive oxygen species and potentiated directly by longer telomeres or indirectly by the mechanisms that buffer their shortening. Overall, our study suggests that contrasting land-use histories can drive divergence in physiological pathways linked to individual health and lifespan. Since this pattern was life-stage dependent, divergent habitat conditions can have contrasting implications across the ontogenetic development of species with complex life cycles.

Abstract
Herbicides are the most commonly applied pesticides in Brazil, specifically those based on glyphosate, and are used for different crops, near the habitats of annual killifish. Annual killifish presents a short life cycle with generally restricted geographic distribution. In this context, we evaluated the effect of the Roundup Original© (65, 130 and 260 µg. L-1 of glyphosate) herbicide on different development stages (adult-young and senile) of the annual killifish (Cynopoecilus sp.). We quantified the oxidative balance markers (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase, lipid peroxidation levels, and total proteins). We observed that the senile individuals presented 2-fold higher lipid peroxidation levels associated with the maintenance of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity levels even after exposure to the herbicide. However, senile subjects were negatively impacted by the exposure to formulations containing glyphosate, and this was related to a loss of glutathione S-transferase activity. Our research demonstrated that the established physiological markers and this species look promising for toxicology studies.

Abstract
Cobalt (Co) is among the hazardous substances identified in aquatic environments. Industrialization and population growth have also contributed to climate change, namely in what concerns ocean temperature rise. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of temperature rise on the impacts caused by Co on Mytilus galloprovincialis. To this end, mussels were exposed for 28 days to 17 °C and 21 °C, without and with 200 μg L-1 of Co. Results showed no significant differences in Co bioaccumulation by the organisms between temperatures. A significant interaction between temperature and Co contamination was observed in terms of oxidative damage, detoxification capacity, and neurotoxicity, with a synergistic effect particularly evident in terms of biotransformation enzymes' activity. The obtained results point out that population survival and distribution may be limited in the long term, highlighting the need for future research on the combined effects of both stressors.

Abstract
The tail resorption process was an inevitable and pivotal transformation during amphibian metamorphosis. The present study investigated the mechanisms of tail resorption through histological and transcriptome analysis in Rana chensinensis. The results showed that tail resorption was initiated before the onset of metamorphic climax, and dramatically regressed after metamorphic climax by external-morphology measurement. The drastic disintegration of tail muscle and notochord occurred at Gs42-44, which were consistent with the trend of thyroid follicular cell height. Besides, expression level analysis and functional annotation of DEGs (differentially expressed genes) were conducted through RNA-seq analysis of the tail. Our study also analyzed the expression of genes related to oxidative stress, autophagy, apoptosis and degradation of cellular components in the tail of R. chensinensis. This study enriched the R. chensinensis transcriptome database and laid the foundation of further analysis of tail resorption.

Abstract
Airborne particulate matter is a significant concern to human health, but the effects of the deposition of dust on other species in the wild has not been well investigated. The vulnerability of insects to mineral dusts has been well known from agricultural management and the current co-occurrence of endangered species with dust-producing industry makes this knowledge more relevant and in need of expansion. To investigate the effects of fugitive gypsum dust on an endangered butterfly species, we exposed a surrogate lepidopterous species (Gloveria medusa; Lasiocampidae) to realistic quantities of gypsum dust either on its hostplant or externally applied to larvae. We then used surviving larvae in a choice experiment to ascertain if previous exposure to gypsum contaminated hostplant affected larval preferences. Consumption of gypsum-dusted foodplant increased risk of death for larvae significantly compared with both controls (hazard ratio = 4.80; 95% CI = 2.08-11.03; p = 0.0002) and the external treatment (HR = 2.85; 95% CI 1.41-5.76; p = 0.003). External treatment elevated death rate, but not significantly (HR = 1.68; 95% CI =0.65-4.33; p = 0.28). Elevated risk of death was greater for smaller larvae. Hostplant choice after previous exposure was not significant, but suggestive that larvae consume more of the hostplant in the condition that they previously experienced (either with or without gypsum). Based on these results and previous studies, we conclude that fugitive gypsum dust may affect populations through direct mortality, reduced developmental rates, lower weights, and extended development periods that disrupt natural phenology. Use of dust to reduce insect infestations is an ancient practice, and knowledge of these effects should be revived to address chronic harms of fugitive dust on insects as they face worldwide declines.

Abstract
It is generally believed that Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) biopesticides are harmless to non-target organisms; however, new research shows controversial results. We exposed acutely and chronicallyLithobates sylvaticusandAnaxyrus americanus tadpoles until metamorphic climax to VectoBac 200G (granules) and VectoBac 1200L (aqueous suspension) at 300-20,000 ITU/L covering field-relevant concentrations and higher. The data show that the exposure parameters tested did not affect significantly the survival, total length, total weight, hepatosomatic index, gonadosomatic index, the expression of genes of interest (i.e., related to xenobiotic exposure, oxidative stress, and metamorphosis), and the intestine tissue layer detachment ofL. sylvaticusandA. americanus in a concentration-response pattern. In contrast, VectoBac 200G significantly increased the median time to metamorphosis ofL. sylvaticus tadpoles by up to 3.5 days and decreased the median by up to 1 day inA. americanus. VectoBac 1200L significantly increased the median time to metamorphosis ofL. sylvaticusandA. americanustadpoles by up to 4.5 days. Also, the exposure to VectoBac 200G and 1200L altered the intestine bacterial community composition inA. americanus at application rates recommended by the manufacturer, which led to an increase in the relative abundance of Verrucomicrobia, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria. Changes in the intestine microbiota might impact the fitness of individuals, including the susceptibility to parasitic infections. Our results indicate that the effect of Bti commercial products is limited; however, we recommend that Bti-spraying activities in amphibian-rich ecosystems should be kept minimal until there is more conclusive research to assess if the changes in the time to metamorphosis and microbiota can lead to negative outcomes in amphibian populations and, eventually, the functioning of ecosystems.

Abstract
This study aimed to use bioassays (single and multispecies) with organisms from different trophic levels to assess soil quality in reclaimed coal mining areas. Soil samples were collected from four sites: two sites with recent reclaim processes (one using topsoil and other using clayey soil), an natural attenuation site, and a control soil. The evaluated parameters were divided into (1) ecotoxicological tests (avoidance test with Eisenia andrei (earthworms) and Armadillidium vulgare (isopods); germination test with Sinapis alba seeds (mustard); reproduction tests with Folsomia candida (collembolans); bacterial toxicity test); (2) population and community assessments (a fungal count; microbial community analysis using Biolog EcoPlatesTM); (3) microcosms scale evaluation (the MS-3 multispecies system); and (4) chemical analysis (soil parameters, soil metal, and cations and anions in soil leachate). Results pointed to toxicity in the natural attenuation site that compromised of habitat function, probably due to low pH and low nutrient levels. The most recent reclaim process, using topsoil and clay soil, improved soil quality and fertility, with a further increase in habitat quality and heterogeneity. This study shows that some techniques used to reclaim degraded mining areas are effective in rebuilding habitats, sustaining soil biota, and reestablishing ecosystem services.

Abstract
In natural ecosystems, living organisms are always subjected to a mixture of multiple heavy metals exposure, yet it is more common to study the effect of individual, rather than combined exposure. This study assessed the impacts of single or combined exposure to Cr and Cu on embryonic development, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism and apoptosis in the early development of Bufo gargarizans embryos. The total length, development stage and malformations of embryos were measured, and the mRNA expression of genes related to oxidative stress, lipid metabolism and apoptosis at Gs 18 and Gs 22 were determined by RT-qPCR. The results showed that all treatments significantly reduced the total length of embryos, delayed the stage of embryonic development and increased the proportion of malformed embryos. The Cr-Cu mixture treatment showed the greatest suppression of embryonic development and induced the highest rate of embryo malformation, compared to individual Cr and Cu treatments. In addition, the expression levels of oxidative stress genes (HSP90, SOD and GPx) and fatty acid β-oxidation-related genes (ACOXL, ECHS1 and SCP) showed an up-regulated trend in treatments compared to control groups. Conversely, the lipid synthesis-related mRNA gene expressions (KAR, TECR, ACSL3 and ACSL4) were down-regulated. Among them, the Cr-Cu mixture had the greatest impact on lipid metabolism gene expression. The treatments showed significant effects on the expression of apoptosis genes (Bcl-1 and Bax), with Bcl-1 mRNA expression increasing and Bax mRNA expression decreasing. These results indicated that exposure to individual Cr, Cu and a Cr-Cu mixture can lead to oxidative stress, disrupt lipid metabolism and promote apoptosis, and the Cr-Cu mixture could cause more serious negative effects on B. gargarizans embryos than Cr or Cu individually.

Abstract
The exploitation of coal is an important resource to generate energy worldwide. However, during the processes of coal extraction, transport, and cargo, dust particles are released into the environment. The aim of this study was to determine the toxicological effects of bituminous coal dust (<38 µm), obtained from a sample collected in a coal mine in Colombia, on the annelid Eisenia fetida. The earthworm culture was standardized under laboratory conditions to evaluate mortality, as well as morphological, physiological and histological changes using concentrations varying from 1 to 4% w/w coal dust in artificial soil, after 7, 14, and 28 days of exposure. In addition, an avoidance assay was carried out after 48-h treatment. Histopathological analysis was performed at the end of the experiment. After the sub-chronic exposure, an increase in mortality was observed at the highest coal dust concentration compared to the untreated group. Alterations in morphology and physiology of the exposed annelids were mostly evidenced at the greatest tested concentrations (3-4%) and exposure times (≥14 days). Changes included loss of weight and color, abundant mucus production, constriction, peeling of the epidermis, clitellum involution, violent movements and lethargy. Avoidance of coal dust-polluted soil followed a concentration-response relationship. Histopathological findings revealed changes on the cuticle, as well as in the circular and longitudinal muscle layers in animals living in soils containing 3 and 4% coal particles. In short, E. fetida exposed to coal dust experienced several pathological changes, suggesting that this pollutant may induce population problems in macroinvertebrates present in coal mining areas.

Abstract
Lithobates catesbeianus tadpoles were exposed to 1 μg L-1 of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) alone or combined (1:1 and 1:1:1) for 2 and 16 days. Results showed a significant increase in the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in the liver, kidney and muscle (except for GPx) in the groups exposed to metal either alone or co-exposed after 2 days compared to the control. After 16 days, SOD, CAT and GST activities decreased significantly in the liver and kidney and GPx activity increased in the liver. Reduced glutathione (GSH) increased in the liver and kidney following combined exposure and decreased after 2 days of metal exposure in the muscle. There were significant increases in lipid hydroperoxide (LPO) levels in the liver, kidney and muscle (2 and 16 days), with the highest levels after metal co-exposure. Cholinesterase (ChE) activity increased significantly in the brain after 2 days of exposure but decreased in the brain (16 days) and muscle (2 days) after exposure to metals, alone and combined. The current study highlighted that the antioxidant system of L. catesbeianus was sensitive to metals and specially to the co-exposure of the three metals, despite presenting differences in the response among tissues. In addition, tadpoles were sensitive at both periods of exposure, but in different modes with stress response (activation, up-regulation) at 2 days and oppression (down-regulation) at 16 days.

Abstract
This study aimed to verify possible alterations involving histological and oxidative stress parameters in the lungs of wild bats in the Carboniferous Basin of Santa Catarina (CBSC) state, Southern Brazil, as a means to evaluate the impact of coal dust on the health of wildlife. Specimens of frugivorous bat species Artibeus lituratus and Sturnira lilium were collected from an area free of coal dust contamination and from coal mining areas. Chemical composition, histological parameters, synthesis of oxidants and antioxidant enzymes, and oxidative damage in the lungs of bats were analyzed. Levels of Na, Cl, Cu, and Br were higher in both species collected in the CBSC than in the controls. Levels of K and Rb were higher in A. lituratus, and levels of Si, Ca, and Fe were higher in S. lilium collected in the carboniferous basin. Both bat species inhabiting the CBSC areas exhibited an increase in the degree of pulmonary emphysema compared to their counterparts collected from control areas. Sturnira lilium showed increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein (DCF) levels, while A. lituratus showed a significant decrease in nitrite levels in the CBSC samples. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity did not change significantly; however, the activity of catalase (CAT) and levels of glutathione (GSH) decreased in the A. lituratus group from CBSC compared to those in the controls. There were no differences in NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 protein (NQO1) abundance or nitrotyrosine expression among the different groups of bats. Total thiol levels showed a significant reduction in A. lituratus from CBSC, while the amount of malondialdehyde (MDA) was higher in both A. lituratus and S. lilium groups from coal mining areas. Our results suggested that bats, especially A. lituratus, living in the CBSC could be used as sentinel species for harmful effects of coal dust on the lungs.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the genotoxic effect of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), beet (Beta vulgaris L.), broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica), and kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) grown in vegetable garden built on the deposits of coal tailings. For this, we used 72 healthy male Swiss albino mice that received juice from the vegetables in an acute or chronic treatment. Using comet assay, we determined that acute administration of the juices of all vegetables from the coal-mining area was genotoxic, and increased the DNA damage in the blood, liver, and cerebral cortex of mice. Therefore, the present data suggest that intake of vegetables cultivated over coal waste results in an increase in DNA damage in some organs; this situation may pose a risk to health.

Abstract
In order to reduce the Cyrtotrachelus buqueti population, which is a serious pest in the bamboo industry, a range of approaches is required, which will be dependent on diverse gene expression influenced by environmental factors. In this study, samples from two regions of China, Muchuan in Sichuan Province and Chishui in Guizhou Province, were investigated through RNA-seq. Approximately 44 million high-quality reads were generated and 94.2% of the data was mapped to the transcriptome. A total of 15,641 out of the 29,406 identified genes were predicted. Moreover, 348 genes were differentially expressed between the two groups of imagoes (77 upregulated and 271 downregulated). The functional analysis showed that these genes were significantly enriched in the ribosome and metabolic pathway categories. The candidate genes contributing to the reduction in C. buqueti included 41 genes involved in the ribosome constitution category, five in the one‑carbon pool pathway by folate category, and five heat shock protein genes. The downregulation of these candidate genes seems to have impaired metabolic processes, such as protein, DNA, RNA, and purine synthesis, as well as carbon and folate metabolism, subsequently resulting in the observed population reduction of C. buqueti. Furthermore, temperature, heavy metal content, and pH might influence the population by altering the expressions of genes involved in these metabolic processes.

Abstract
This study analyzed the effect of different concentrations of herbicides (Facet®, Primoleo®, and Roundup®) on metabolism and oxidative balance (superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, lipid peroxidation) in the gills, liver, kidneys, and tail muscle of adult catfish. All herbicides caused protein depletion in gills, increased glycogen and triacylglycerol consumption in the liver, and changes in muscle glycogen. Roundup® and Primoleo® stimulated lipid deposition in the liver, while Roundup® and Facet® stimulated lipid consumption in gills. In kidneys, protein content increased after Roundup® and Primoleo® exposure, glycogen increased after Facet®, and lipids increased after Roundup®. Primoleo® had the strongest effect on muscle, with changes in all metabolites. Regarding oxidative stress, the liver and kidneys were the organs most affected by exposure to herbicides, and catalase was the main enzyme involved in the detoxification of these herbicides. A hierarchy of toxicity was established for the tested chemicals: Facet® > Primoleo® > Roundup®.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies indicate that living in proximity to coal mines is correlated with numerous diseases including cancer, and that exposure to PM10 and PM2.5 components could be associated with this phenomenon. However, the understanding of the mechanisms by which PM exerts its adverse effects is still incomplete and comes mainly from studies in occupationally exposed populations. The aims of this study were to: (1) evaluate DNA damage in lymphocytes assessing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome assay (CBMN-cyt) parameters; (2) identify aneugenic or clastogenic effects in lymphocytes of exposed populations using CREST immunostaining for micronuclei; (3) evaluate multi-elemental composition of atmospheric particulate matter; and (4) verify relation between the DNA damage and PM2.5 and PM10 levels around the mining area. Analysis revealed a significant increase in micronuclei frequency in binucleated (MNBN) and mononucleated (MNMONO) cells of individuals with residential proximity to open-pit coal mines compared to residents from non-mining areas. Correlation analysis demonstrated a highly significant association between PM2.5 levels, MNBN frequencies and CREST+ micronuclei induction in exposed residents. These results suggest that PM2.5 fraction generated in coal mining activities may induce whole chromosome loss (aneuploidy) preferentially, although there are also chromosome breaks. Analysis of the chemical composition of PM2.5 by PIXE demonstrated that Si, S, K and Cr concentrations varied significantly between coal mining and reference areas. Enrichment factor values (EF) showed that S, Cr and Cu were highly enriched in the coal mining areas. Compared to reference area, mining regions had also higher concentrations of extractable organic matter (EOM) related to nonpolar and polar compounds. Our results demonstrate that PM2.5 fraction represents the most important health risk for residents living near open-pit mines, underscoring the need for incorporation of ambient air standards based on PM2.5 measures in coal mining areas.

Abstract
The concentration and distribution of Mg, P, Cl, K, Cu and Zn in the dorsal hippocampus CA1 region of rat brains were studied during memory consolidation and reconsolidation processes stimulated with inhibitory avoidance (IA) tests. Experimental rats were divided into four groups: i) group not submitted to inhibitory avoidance task (IA-N); ii) group submitted to inhibitory avoidance training session (IA-Y); iii) group submitted to inhibitory avoidance reactivation session but did not step down from the platform (IAR-N); and iv) group submitted to avoidance reactivation session and stepped down from the platform (IAR-Y). Elemental concentration and distribution in the CA1 hippocampus region were obtained through the Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique. The results indicate that the concentration of Mg, P, Cl, K and Cu increased during memory consolidation. During the memory reconsolidation process, the concentrations of Mg, P, Cl and K increased, while Cu and Zn had no significant changes with respect to their basal condition. These results show that the major part of these elements may be engaged in memory consolidation could be also participating in memory reconsolidation. For all elements, the general trend related to their concentration did not change during reconsolidation regardless the presence of a novelty event, i.e. stepping down from the platform.

Abstract
Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are the environmental pollutants of growing concern. The aim of this study was to indicate the effects of typical PPCPs on the marsh frog Pelophylax ridibundus. We treated male frogs with waterborne ibuprofen (IBU, 250ng·L-1), triclosan (TCS, 500ng·L-1), or estrone (E1, 100ng·L-1) for 14days. Common vulnerability of the frogs was detected from dramatic decrease of Zn, total and metalated metallothionein (MT) concentrations, Zn/Cu ratio, the elevation of activity of glutathione-S-transferase, cathepsin D and DNA instability in the liver, the depletion of cholinesterase in the brain and cortisol in the blood plasma in all exposures. Nevertheless, lipofuscin concentration in the liver was always decreased. The groups were best distinguished by cytochrome P450 (CYP450) activity determined by ELISA. The exposure to IBU caused lesser damage, but elevated the levels of oxyradicals and glutathione (GSH and GSSG) and lysosomal membrane instability. Exposures to TCS and E1 provoked the endocrine disturbance (increased levels of vitellogenin and thyrotropin in blood plasma), decreased lactate dehydrogenase activity and increased level of pyruvate in the liver. TCS caused the increase of GSSG by 7.3 times and lactate levels. Only E1 lead to decrease of deiodinase activity in the liver, activation of CYP450 and caspase-3 and efflux of cathepsin D from lysosomes. Spectrophotometric and ELISA assays of MTs and CYP450 gave distinct results in E1-group. Broad disruption of the hormonal pathways caused by E1 could be of concern for the health status of frogs in their habitats.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) as risk markers for environmental stress are widely used to predict changes in the health and fitness of many animals exposed to pollutants. However, from the perspective of protecting declining amphibians, it remains to be verified which one would be a reliable indicator for amphibians exposed to long-term heavy metal pollution under natural conditions. In this study, the OS and FA of Bufo raddei exposed to natural heavy metal pollution were analyzed to determine which marker is more accurate for indicating heavy metal-induced stress. Three years of data were collected during the breeding season of B. raddei from Baiyin (BY), which has been mainly contaminated with Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd compounds for a long period, and from Liujiaxia (LJX), which is a relatively unpolluted area. Unexpectedly, although significant accumulation of the four heavy metals was found in the kidney and liver of B. raddei from BY, the levels of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and malondialdehyde in these two organs were found to be irregular, with low repeatability in both BY and LJX. However, significant differences in the levels of FA were observed in B. raddei populations from these two areas over the past 3 years (P < 0.01). The degrees of FA in B. raddei populations from BY and LJX were assessed as degree 4 and 1, respectively. In short, this study suggested that FA was a more reliable and effective indicator than OS to monitor and predict long-term environmental stress on anuran amphibians.

Abstract
As one of the most impactful industries, coal mining can promote several alterations at surrounding environment. In surface water, elevated concentrations of metals like Mn, Zn, Fe and Al are often observed. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the bioaccumulation and the sub-lethal effects of these metals on various organs of the Neotropical bivalve Anodontites trapesialis confined along a stream located near a coal mine, in order to assess a set of biomarkers that could be used for effectively monitoring coal mining areas. Clams were caged, for 96h, at two sites located upstream (Up1 and Up2) and two sites downstream (Dw1 and Dw2) from the mine. Metals bioaccumulation was determined in gills, mantle, digestive gland, muscle and hemolymph and the following biomarkers were measured in A. trapesialis tissues: total antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals, metallothionein content, lipid peroxidation (LPO), proteins carbonylation, glutathione S-transferase activity, superoxide dismutase activity and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The results showed that Al and Fe bioaccumulation in the gills and hemolymph, Al bioaccumulation in the mantle and muscle, increased LPO in the gills (Dw1 and Dw2) and mantle (Dw1), as well as reduced AChE activity in the muscle (Dw1 and Dw2) should be considered effective biomarkers for monitoring coal mining areas. A. trapesialis proved to be an efficient biological model, considering that biomarkers responses were observed in the clams after only 96h of confinement at Dw sites, accordingly this species could be a good candidate for monitoring Neotropical freshwaters.

Abstract
Lacustrine sediments accumulate pollutants that input from the lake watershed and can be released to the water column by sediment resuspension; thus, pollutants can change their bioavailability and exert adverse effects to aquatic biota. Shallow-urban lakes are particularly susceptible to receive pollutants from urban discharges and sediment resuspension. Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico City, an urban-shallow lake, faces multiple problems: urban sprawl, overexploitation of aquifers, drying of springs, discharge of wastewater from treatment plants, and sediment resuspension. The aquatic biota living in this ecosystem is continuously exposed to the release of pollutants from the sediments. We assessed the risk that pollutants released from sediments from Lake Xochimilco, Touristic (TZ) and Agriculture zone (AZ), can exert on a native amphibian species of the lake (Ambystoma mexicanum) through exposure bioassays to sediment elutriates. We evaluate alterations in the amphibian by three approaches: biochemical (level of lipid peroxidation, LPO), cellular (ultrastructure) and the liver histology of A. mexicanum and we compare them with a batch control. Additionally, we assessed heavy metals (Pb, Cd and Hg) in elutriates. Elutriates from TZ showed the highest concentrations of the metals assessed. Organisms exposed to sediment elutriates from either study sites showed higher LPO values than control organisms (p<0.05). Organisms exposed to elutriates from the TZ showed the most conspicuous damages: hepatic vasodilation of sinusoids, capillaries with erythrocytes, leukocyte infiltration and cytoplasmic vacuolation in hepatocytes. The biological responses assessed reflected the risk that faces A. mexicanum when is exposed for prolonged periods to sediment resuspension in Lake Xochimilco.
