Review of Rare Earth Elements as Fertilizers and Feed Additives: A Knowledge Gap Analysis

Cellular Response of Adapted and Non-Adapted Tetrahymena thermophila Strains to Europium Eu(III) Compounds

Europium is one of the most reactive lanthanides and humans use it in many different applications, but we still know little about its potential toxicity and cellular response to its exposure. Two strains of the eukaryotic microorganism model Tetrahymena thermophila were adapted to high concentrations of two Eu(III) compounds (EuCl3 or Eu2O3) and compared to a control strain and cultures treated with both compounds. In this ciliate, EuCl3 is more toxic than Eu2O3. LC50 values show that this microorganism is more resistant to these Eu(III) compounds than other microorganisms. Oxidative stress originated mainly by Eu2O3 is minimized by overexpression of genes encoding important antioxidant enzymes. The overexpression of metallothionein genes under treatment with Eu(III) compounds supports the possibility that this lanthanide may interact with the -SH groups of the cysteine residues from metallothioneins and/or displace essential cations of these proteins during their homeostatic function. Both lipid metabolism (lipid droplets fusing with europium-containing vacuoles) and autophagy are involved in the cellular response to europium stress. Bioaccumulation, together with a possible biomineralization to europium phosphate, seems to be the main mechanism of Eu(III) detoxification in these cells.

Rare earth contamination of edible vegetation: Ce, La, and summed REE in fungi

The increasing and diversified use of rare earth elements (REE) is considered a potential source of pollution of environmental media including soils. This work documents critically overview data on the occurrence of REE in the fruiting bodies of wild and farmed species of edible and medicinal mushrooms, as this was identified as the largest published dataset of REE occurrence in foodstuff. Most of the literature reported occurrences of cerium (Ce) and lanthanum (La), but a number of studies lacked data on all lanthanides. The Ce, La, and summed REE occurrences were assessed through the criteria of environmental geochemistry, analytical chemistry, food toxicology, mushroom systematics, and ecology. Ce and La accumulate similarly in fruiting bodies and are not fractionated during uptake, maintaining the occurrence patterns of their growing substrates. Similarly, there is no credible evidence of variable REE uptake because the evaluated species data show natural, unfractionated patterns in accordance with the Oddo-Harkins' order of environmental lanthanide occurrence. Thus, lithosphere occurrence patterns of Ce and La as the first and the third most abundant lanthanides are reflected in wild and farmed mushrooms regardless of substrate and show that Ce is around twice more abundant than La. The current state of knowledge provides no evidence that mushroom consumption at these REE occurrence levels poses a health risk either by themselves or when included with other dietary exposure. Macromycetes appear to bio-exclude lanthanides because independently reported bioconcentration factors for different species and collection sites, typically range from < 1 to 0.001. This is reflected in fruiting body concentrations which are four to two orders of magnitude lower than growing substrates. Determination of dose- and time-dependent hepatotoxicity and apoptosis of Lanthanum oxide nanoparticles in female Swiss albino mice

Nanosized lanthanum oxide particles (La2O3) are commonly utilized in various industries. The potential health risks associated with La2O3 nanoparticles, cytotoxic effects at varying doses and time intervals, and the mechanisms behind their induction of behavioral changes remain uncertain and necessitate further investigation. Therefore, this study examined in vivo hepatotoxicity, considering the quantity (60, 150, and 300 mg/kg) and time-dependent induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) over one week or 21 days. The mice received intraperitoneal injections of three different concentrations in Milli-Q water. Throughout the experiments, no physical changes or weight loss were observed among the groups. However, after 21 days, only the highest concentration showed signs of anxiety in the activity cage (p < 0.05). Subsequently, all animals treated with La2O3 NPs exhibited a significant loss of learning and memory recall using the Active Avoidances test, after 21 days (p < 0.001). Markers for anti-reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly upregulated in response to all concentrations of NPs after seven days compared to the control group. This was confirmed by a significant increase in glutathione peroxidase (Gpx1) and pro-apoptotic Caspase-3 expression at the lowest and highest doses. Additionally, both transcription and protein levels of the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 surpassed P53 protein in a dosage-dependent manner, indicating activation of the primary anti-apoptosis pathway. After 21 days, P53 levels exceeded BCL-2 protein levels, confirming a significant loss of BCL-2 mRNA, particularly at the 300 mg/kg concentration. Furthermore, a higher transcription level of Caspase-3, SOD, and Gpx1 was observed, with the highest values detected at the 300 mg/kg concentration, indicating the activation of cell death. Histopathological analysis of the liver illustrated apoptotic bodies resulting from La2O3 NP concentration. The investigation revealed multiple inflammatory foci, cytoplasmic degeneration, steatosis, and DNA fragmentation consistent with increased damage over time due to higher concentrations. Blood samples were also analyzed to determine liver enzymatic changes, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lipid profiles. The results showed significant differences among all La2O3 NP concentrations, with the most pronounced damage observed at the 300 mg/kg dose even after 21 days. Based on an animal model, this study suggests that La2O3 hepatotoxicity is likely caused by the size and shape of nanoparticles (NPs), following a dose and time-dependent mechanism that induces the production of reactive oxygen species and behavioral changes such as anxiety and memory loss.

Boosting plant resilience: The promise of rare earth nanomaterials in growth, physiology, and stress mitigation

Rare earth elements (REE) have been extensively used in a variety of applications such as cell phones, electric vehicles, and lasers. REEs are also used as nanomaterials (NMs), which have distinctive features that make them suitable candidates for biomedical applications. In this review, we have highlighted the role of rare earth element nanomaterials (REE-NMs) in the growth of plants and physiology, including seed sprouting rate, shoot biomass, root biomass, and photosynthetic parameters. In addition, we discuss the role of REE-NMs in the biochemical and molecular responses of plants. Crucially, REE-NMs influence the primary metabolites of plants, namely sugars, amino acids, lipids, vitamins, enzymes, polyols, sorbitol, and mannitol, and secondary metabolites, like terpenoids, alkaloids, phenolics, and sulfur-containing compounds. Despite their protective effects, elevated concentrations of NMs are reported to induce toxicity and affect plant growth when compared with lower concentrations, and they not only induce toxicity in plants but also affect soil microbes, aquatic organisms, and humans via the food chain. Overall, we are still at an early stage of understanding the role of REE in plant physiology and growth, and it is essential to examine the interaction of nanoparticles with plant metabolites and their impact on the expression of plant genes and signaling networks.

Lanthanum promotes Solanum nigrum L. growth and phytoremediation of cadmium and lead through endocytosis: Physiological and biochemical response, heavy metal uptake and visualization

Rare earth elements (REEs) are important to enhance agricultural productivity. The utilization of phytoremediation as a green technology for addressing heavy metal (HMs) contamination in soil and wastewater has gained significant attention. In our research, we conducted indoor hydroponic experiments to examine the impacts of lanthanum (La) on the growth and enrichment capacity of Solanum nigrum L. (S. nigrum). S. nigrum was cultivated in 10 mg·L-1 of cadmium (Cd), 25 mg·L-1 of lead (Pb), and a mixture of both (5 mg·L-1 Cd + 15 mg·L-1 Pb). Additionally, S. nigrum were subjected to foliar spray or hydroponic supplementation of La(III). The treatment with La(III) significantly increased total fresh weight by 17.82 % to 42.20 %, compared to the treatment without La(III). Furthermore, La(III) facilitated the endocytosis of roots and enhanced Cd2+ flux ranging from 15.64 % to 75.99 % when compared to the treatment without La(III). Foliar and hydroponic application of La(III) resulted in an increase in the translocation factors (TF) in plants of Cd and Pb compared to treatments without La(III). These findings can offer valuable insights into the potential of La(III) to enhance the phytoremediation of soil or wastewater polluted with compounds.

Rare Earths-The Answer to Everything

Rare earths, scandium, yttrium, and the fifteen lanthanoids from lanthanum to lutetium, are classified as critical metals because of their ubiquity in daily life. They are present in magnets in cars, especially electric cars; green electricity generating systems and computers; in steel manufacturing; in glass and light emission materials especially for safety lighting and lasers; in exhaust emission catalysts and supports; catalysts in artificial rubber production; in agriculture and animal husbandry; in health and especially cancer diagnosis and treatment; and in a variety of materials and electronic products essential to modern living. They have the potential to replace toxic chromates for corrosion inhibition, in magnetic refrigeration, a variety of new materials, and their role in agriculture may expand. This review examines their role in sustainability, the environment, recycling, corrosion inhibition, crop production, animal feedstocks, catalysis, health, and materials, as well as considering future uses.

A Two-Generation Reproductive Toxicity Study of Cerium Nitrate in Sprague-Dawley Rats

A two-generation reproductive toxicity study was performed to evaluate the effects of cerium nitrate on the development of the parent, offspring, and third generation of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. A total of 240 SD rats (30 rats/sex/group) were randomly divided into four dosage groups according to body weight: 0 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, 90 mg/kg, and 270 mg/kg. The rats were administered different dosages of cerium nitrate by oral gavage. There were no observed changes related to cerium nitrate in body weight, food consumption, sperm survival rate, motility, mating rate, conception rate, abortion rate, uterine plus fetal weight, uterine weight, corpus luteum number, implantation rate, live fetus number (rate), stillbirth number (rate), absorbed fetus number (rate), appearance, visceral, and skeletal in rats of each generation dosage group. In addition, the pathological findings showed no significant lesions associated with cerium nitrate toxicity in all tissues and organs, including reproductive organs. In conclusion, the present study showed that long-term oral gavage of cerium nitrate at 30 mg/kg, 90 mg/kg, and 270 mg/kg had no significant effect on reproduction and the developmental ability of their offspring in rats. The no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of cerium nitrate in SD rats was higher than 270 mg/kg.

Unraveling the impact of lanthanum on methane consuming microbial communities in rice field soils

The discovery of the lanthanide requiring enzymes in microbes was a significant scientific discovery that opened a whole new avenue of biotechnological research of this important group of metals. However, the ecological impact of lanthanides on microbial communities utilizing methane (CH4) remains largely unexplored. In this study, a laboratory microcosm model experiment was performed using rice field soils with different pH origins (5.76, 7.2, and 8.36) and different concentrations of La3+ in the form of lanthanum chloride (LaCl3). Results clearly showed that CH4 consumption was inhibited by the addition of La3+ but that the response depended on the soil origin and pH. 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the genus Methylobacter, Methylosarcina, and Methylocystis as key players in CH4 consumption under La3+ addition. We suggest that the soil microbiome involved in CH4 consumption can generally tolerate addition of high concentrations of La3+, and adjustments in community composition ensured ecosystem functionality over time. As La3+ concentrations increase, the way that the soil microbiome reacts may not only differ within the same environment but also vary when comparing different environments, underscoring the need for further research into this subject.

Blood concentrations of metals, essential trace elements, rare earth elements and other chemicals in the general adult population of Barcelona: Distribution and associated sociodemographic factors

BACKGROUND

Very little information is available on the population distribution and on sociodemographic predictors of body concentrations of rare earth elements (REE) and other chemicals used in the manufacturing of high-tech devices.

OBJECTIVES

To analyze the distribution and associated sociodemographic factors of blood concentrations of chemical elements (including some metals, essential trace elements, rare earth elements and other minority elements) in a representative sample of the general population of Barcelona (Spain).

METHODS

A sample of participants in the Barcelona Health Survey of 2016 (N = 240) were interviewed face-to-face, gave blood, and underwent a physical exam. Concentrations of 50 chemical elements were analyzed by ICP-MS in whole blood samples.

RESULTS

All 50 chemicals studied, including 26 REE and minority elements, were detected. Lead, silver, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, antimony, strontium, thallium and six essential trace elements were detected in more than 70% of the population. The most frequently detected REE and minority elements were europium (62%), thulium (56%), gold (41%), indium (31%), ruthenium (24%), and tantalum (20%). Less affluent occupational social classes had higher percentages of detection of some REE. Median concentrations of silver, arsenic, cadmium and mercury were: 0.091, 3.01, 0.309, and 3.33 ng/mL, respectively. Women had lower median concentrations than men of lead (1.47 vs. 2.04 μg/dL, respectively), iron and zinc, and higher concentrations of copper and manganese. The influence of sociodemographic characteristics on chemical concentrations differed by sex.

CONCLUSIONS

While well-known contaminants as lead, mercury, cadmium, or arsenic were detected in the majority of the population, numerous individuals had also detectable concentrations of chemicals as europium, indium, thulium, or gold. Sociodemographic and physical characteristics (sex, age, social class, weight change) influenced concentrations of some chemicals.

Harnessing the composition of dissolved organic matter in lagoon sediment in association with rare earth elements using fluorescence and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy

Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) plays a pivotal role in influencing metal binding and mobility within lagoon sediments. However, there exists a gap in understanding the compositional alterations of DOM concerning Rare Earth Elements (REEs) across varying pollution gradients. This study aimed to characterize DOM and examine its relationship with REEs in sediment cores from different pollution levels in Yundang Lagoon, China using excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). The results raveled four distinct fluorescent components. Among these, two correspond to humic-like substances, while the remaining two are attributed to protein-like substances. Remarkably, the prevalence of protein-like compounds was observed to exceed 58% of the total fluorescence intensity across all the investigated sites. Furthermore, a substantial discrepancy in total fluorescence intensity was detected between the Songbai Lake and the Inner and Outer Lagoon, indicating a variance in DOM content. In terms of REEs, the average concentration of total REEs was notably elevated within the Songbai Lake sediments (318.36 mg/kg) as compared to the Inner and Outer Lagoon sediments (296.36 and 278.05 mg/kg, respectively). Of significance is the enrichment of Light Rare Earth Elements (LREEs), particularly Ce, La, Pr, and Nd, over Heavy REEs (HREEs) across all surveyed locations. Intriguingly, a coherent trend emerged wherein the fluorescence intensity and LREE concentrations exhibited a synchronized increase from Outer to Inner to Songbai Lake core sediments. This observation substantiates a strong correlation between DOM content and pollution levels (p < 0.05). By shedding light on the intricate interplay between DOM and REEs within urban aquatic sediments, this study imparts novel insights which enrich our comprehension of urban environmental dynamics.

Toxicokinetics of praseodymium and cerium administered as chloride salts in Sprague-Dawley rats: impacts of the dose and of co-exposure with additional rare earth elements

We conducted a rat exposure study to assess the impacts of dose and co-exposure with other rare earth elements (REEs) on the toxicokinetics of praseodymium (Pr) and cerium (Ce). We first determined the kinetic profiles of elemental Pr and Ce in blood, urine and feces along with tissue levels at sacrifice on the seventh day following intravenous injection of PrCl3 or CeCl3 at 0.3 or 1 mg/kg bw (of the chloride salts) in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 5 per group). In blood, Pr and Ce half-lives for the initial phase (t1/2α) increased with increasing doses, while their half-lives for the terminal phase (t1/2β) were similar at both doses. In urine, a minor excretion route, no significant effect of the dose on the cumulative excretion was apparent. In feces, a major excretion route, the fraction of the Pr dose recovered was significantly lower at the 1 mg/kg bw dose compared to the 0.3 mg/kg bw dose, while no significant dose effect was apparent for Ce. In the liver and spleen, which are the main sites of REEs accumulation, there was a significant effect of the dose only for Ce retention in the spleen (i.e., increased retention of Ce in spleen at higher dose). Results were compared with those of a previous toxicokinetic study with a similar design but an exposure to a quaternary mixture of CeCl3, PrCl3, NdCl3 and YCl3, each administered at 0.3 mg/kg bw or 1 mg/kg bw. A mixture effect was apparent for the initial elimination phase (t1/2α) of Pr and Ce from blood and for the fecal excretion of Ce at the 1 mg/kg bw. In urine and liver, there was no evident overall mixture effect; in the spleen, there was a higher retention of Pr and Ce in rats exposed to the mixture at the 0.3 mg/kg bw, but not at the 1 mg/kg bw dose. Overall, this study showed that the dose and mixture exposure are two important factors to consider as determinants of the toxicokinetics of REEs.

Human and environmental exposure to rare earth elements in gold mining areas in the northeastern Amazon

Rudimentary methods are used to exploit gold (Au) in several artisanal mines in the Amazon, producing hazardous wastes that may pose risks of contamination by rare earth elements (REEs). The objectives of this study were to quantify the concentrations of REEs and assess their environmental and human health risks in artisanal Au mining areas in the northeastern Amazon. Thus, 25 samples of soils and mining wastes were collected in underground, colluvial, and cyanidation exploration sites, as well as in a natural forest that was considered as a reference area. The concentrations of REEs were quantified using alkaline fusion and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the results were used to estimate pollution indices and risks associated with the contaminants. All REEs showed higher concentrations in waste deposition areas than in the reference area, especially Ce, Sc, Nd, La, Pr, Sm, and Eu. Pollution and enrichment levels were higher in the underground and cyanidation mining areas, with very high contamination factors (6.2-27) for Ce, Eu, La, Nd, Pr, Sm, and Sc, and significant to very high enrichment factors (5.5-20) for Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Sc. The ecological risk indices varied from moderate (167.3) to high (365.7) in the most polluted sites, but risks to human health were low in all areas studied. The results of this study indicate that artisanal Au mining has the potential to cause contamination, enrichment, and ecological risks by REEs in the northeastern Amazon. Mitigation measures should be implemented to protect the environment from the negative impacts of these contaminants.

How tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) BY-2 cells cope with Eu(III) - a microspectroscopic study

The extensive use of lanthanides in science, industry and high-technology products is accompanied by an anthropogenic input of rare earth elements into the environment. Knowledge of a metal's environmental fate is essential for reasonable risk assessment and remediation approaches. In the present study, Eu(III) was representatively used as a luminescent probe to study the chemical environment and to elucidate the molecular interactions of lanthanides with a suspension cell culture of Nicotiana tabacum BY-2. Biochemical methods were combined with luminescence spectroscopy, two-dimensional microspectroscopic mappings, and data deconvolution methods to resolve the bioassociation behavior and spatial distribution of Eu(III) in plant cells. BY-2 cells were found to gradually take up the metal after exposure to 100 μM Eu(III) without significant loss of viability. Time-resolved luminescence measurements were used to specify the occurrence of Eu(III) species as a function of time, revealing the transformation of an initial Eu(III) species into another after 24 h exposure. Chemical microscopy and subsequent iterative factor analysis reveal the presence of four distinct Eu(III) species located at different cellular compartments, e.g., the cell nucleus, nucleolus and cell walls, which could be assigned to intracellular binding motifs. In addition, a special type of bioaccumulation occurs through the formation of a Eu(III)-containing oxalate biomineral, which is already formed within the first 24 hours after metal exposure. Oxalate crystals were also obtained in analogous experiments with Gd and Sm. These results indicate that tobacco BY-2 cells induce the precipitation of metal oxalate biominerals for detoxification of lanthanides, although they also bind to other cellular ligands at the same time.

Yttrium chloride induces ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes via iron accumulation and triggers cardiac lipid peroxidation and inflammation that cause heart adverse events in mice

The growing presence of yttrium (Y) in the environment raises concern regarding its safety and toxicity. However, limited toxicological data are available to determine cardiotoxicity of Y and its underlying mechanisms. In the present study, yttrium chloride (YCl3) intervention with different doses was performed in male Kunming mice for the toxicological evaluation of Y in the heart. After 28 days of intragastric administration, 500 mg/kg·bw YCl3 induces iron accumulation in cardiomyocytes, and triggers ferroptosis through the glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4)/glutathione (GSH)/system Xc- axis via the inhibition of Nrf2 signaling pathway. This process led to cardiac lipid peroxidation and inflammatory response. Further RNA sequencing transcriptome analysis found that many genes involved in ferroptosis and lipid metabolism-related pathways were enriched. The ferroptosis induced by YCl3 in cardiomyocytes ultimately caused cardiac injury and dysfunction in mice. Our findings assist in the elucidation of the potential subacute cardiotoxicity of Y3+ and its underlying mechanisms.

Rare earths and other elements content in hen eggs sold in Italy: comparison among main types of farming methods and consumer's health risk assessment

Recently, in Italy, consumers are choosing hen eggs from farming systems with higher ethical value, due to their perception of a related higher quality and safety. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the existence of differences in elemental content in Italian eggs from organic, barn, and caged hen farming methods and to determine the related potential consumer exposure risk to inorganic contaminants due to the consumption of eggs. One hundred seventy-six egg samples were collected and analyzed using Q-ICP-MS to investigate the content of 14 elements (Pb, As, Hg, Cd, Tl, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Se, Co, Ni, V, and Cr) and 13 rare earth elements (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb). The scenarios of exposure to rare earth and other elements from eggs were estimated for three age groups of consumers. The daily intake values were always lower than the respective safety reference values. In conclusion, Italian hen eggs contain low levels of rare earth and other elements, and therefore, their consumption does not represent a risk of exposure. Finally, no significant differences in contaminants between conventional and organic farming methods were found.

Lanthanum Supplementation Alleviates Tomato Root Growth Suppression under Low Light Stress

Supplementation with rare earth elements (REEs) such as lanthanum and cerium has been shown to promote plant elongation and/or increase crop yields. On the other hand, there are reports that REE supplementation of plants has no such effect. The appropriate modes for REE utilization and the underlying mechanism are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated how REE supplementation of plants under low light stress affects plant growth and gene expression. Under low light stress conditions, tomato root elongation was observed to be reduced by about half. This suppression of root elongation was found to be considerably alleviated by 20 mM lanthanum ion supplementation. This effect was plant-species-dependent and nutrient-condition-dependent. Under low light stress, the expression of the genes for phytochrome-interacting factor, which induces auxin synthesis, and several auxin-synthesis-related proteins were markedly upregulated by lanthanum ion supplementation. Thus, we speculate that REE supplementation of plants results in auxin-induced cell elongation and alleviates growth suppression under stress conditions.

Triazine Herbicide and NPK Fertilizer Exposure: Accumulation of Heavy Metals and Rare Earth Elements, Effects on Cuticle Melanization, and Immunocompetence in the Model Species Tenebrio molitor

The increasing use of agrochemicals, including fertilizers and herbicides, has led to worrying metal contamination of soils and waters and raises serious questions about the effects of their transfer to different levels of the trophic web. Accumulation and biomagnification of essential (K, Na, Mg, Zn, Ca), nonessential (Sr, Hg, Rb, Ba, Se, Cd, Cr, Pb, As), and rare earth elements (REEs) were investigated in newly emerged adults of Tenebrio molitor exposed to field-admitted concentrations of a metribuzin-based herbicide and an NPK blend fertilizer. Chemical analyses were performed using inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) supported by unsupervised pattern recognition techniques. Physiological parameters such as cuticle melanization, cellular (circulating hemocytes), and humoral (phenoloxidase enzyme activity) immune responses and mass loss were tested as exposure markers in both sexes. The results showed that NPK fertilizer application is the main cause of REE accumulation in beetles over time, besides toxic elements (Sr, Hg, Cr, Rb, Ba, Ni, Al, V, U) also present in the herbicide-treated beetles. The biomagnification of Cu and Zn suggested a high potential for food web transfer in agroecosystems. Gender differences in element concentrations suggested that males and females differ in element uptake and excretion. Differences in phenotypic traits show that exposure affects metabolic pathways involving sequestration and detoxification during the transition phase from immature-to-mature beetles, triggering a redistribution of resources between sexual maturation and immune responses. Our findings highlight the importance of setting limits for metals and REEs in herbicides and fertilizers to avoid adverse effects on species that provide ecosystem services and contribute to soil health in agroecosystems.

Cerium and samarium blocked antioxidant enzymes in wheat plants

This work was conducted to study positive and negative impacts of cerium (Ce) and samarium (Sm) on two cultivars (Arta and Baharan) in wheat plant. Symbols of stress such as proline, malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant enzymes, which may be complicated in the suppression responses of plants, were also studied. Wheat plants were exposed to 0, 2500, 5000, 7500, 10,000 and 15,000 μM of Ce and Sm for 7 days. The growth enhanced in plants treated with lesser Ce and Sm concentration (2500 μM) and declined in plants treated with upper concentrations as compared to untreated plants. The treatment with 2500 μM of Ce and Sm increased dry weigh in Arta by 68.42 and 20% and in Baharan by 32.14% and 27.3%. Thus, Ce and Sm had hormesis effect on growth in wheat plants. According to plant's growth parameter patterns, Arta cultivar had more sensitive to Sm than to Ce, whereas Baharan cultivar had sensitive to Ce than to Sm. Our results indicated impact of Ce and Sm on proline accumulation depended on the dosage of Ce and Sm. It was observed that Ce and Sm accumulated in wheat plants at higher exposure doses. Increment of MDA content by Ce and Sm treatments showed that these metals caused oxidative stress in wheat plants. Ce and Sm blocked enzymatic antioxidant system (superoxide dismutases, peroxidase and polyphenol peroxidase) in wheat. In wheat plants treated with lower Ce and Sm concentrations higher amounts of non-enzymatic antioxidant metabolites were detected. Thus, we showed the potential negative impact of unsuitable utilization of REEs in plants and suggested growth and interruption in physiological and biochemical mechanisms as a possible factor to recognize the underlying toxicological processes.

Foliar application of lanthanum promotes growth and phytoremediation potential Solanum nigrum L

The hormetic effect of rare earth elements (REEs) has been found in a variety of crops and has been promoting crop growth for decades. Spraying leaves with REEs can enhance the endocytosis of plant roots. The non-selectivity of endocytosis is conducive to the direct absorption of environmental pollutants. The hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum L. (S. nigrum), as a plant with high biomass and heavy metal tolerance, is a good candidate for phytoremediation. La(III), as a typical light REE, also has an obvious hormetic effect on S. nigrum. At 10 μM La(III), the biomass of S. nigrum reached the maximum, which was 89% greater than the control, and La(III) concentration was much lower than the previously reported optimum of 56 μM for general plants. In the present study, enhanced endocytosis after foliar spraying of La(III) was firstly observed in the root cell of hyperaccumulation plants, and La(III) increased the biomass of S. nigrum by improving the photosynthetic system, and promoting nutrient uptake and root development. The antioxidant defense system improved by La(III) contributed to the tolerance of S. nigrum to heavy metals. Applying a reasonable range of La(III) is beneficial to improving S. nigrum growth and tolerance of heavy metals. Compared with spraying deionized water, the translocation factor and bioaccumulation factor value of S. nigrum to cadmium increased by 15% and 21% respectively when spraying 10 μM La(III). Our findings provide a reference for improving hyperaccumulator plant growth and biomass, which improves phytoremediation efficiency.

Plasma-Membrane-Localized Transporter NREET1 is Responsible for Rare Earth Element Uptake in Hyperaccumulator Dicranopteris linearis

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical for numerous modern technologies, and demand is increasing globally; however, production steps are resource-intensive and environmentally damaging. Some plant species are able to hyperaccumulate REEs, and understanding the biology behind this phenomenon could play a pivotal role in developing more environmentally friendly REE recovery technologies. Here, we identified a REE transporter NRAMP REE Transporter 1 (NREET1) from the REE hyperaccumulator fern Dicranopteris linearis. Although NREET1 belongs to the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (NRAMP) family, it shares a low similarity with other NRAMP members. When expressed in yeast, NREET1 exhibited REE transport capacity, but it could not transport divalent metals, such as zinc, nickel, manganese, or iron. NREET1 is mainly expressed in D. linearis roots and predominantly localized in the plasma membrane. Expression studies in Arabidopsis thaliana revealed that NREET1 functions as a transporter mediating REE uptake and transfer from root cell walls into the cytoplasm. Moreover, NREET1 has a higher affinity for transporting light REEs compared to heavy REEs, which is consistent to the preferential enrichment of light REEs in field-grown D. linearis. We therefore conclude that NREET1 may play an important role in the uptake and consequently hyperaccumulation of REEs in D. linearis. These findings lay the foundation for the use of synthetic biology techniques to design and produce sustainable, plant-based REE recovery systems.

Evaluation of Rare Earth Element-Associated Hormetic Effects in Candidate Fertilizers and Livestock Feed Additives

Rare earth elements (REEs) are recognized as emerging contaminants with implications in human and environmental health. Apart from their adverse effects, REEs have been reported as having positive effects when amended to fertilizers and livestock feed additives, thus suggesting a hormetic trend, implying a concentration-related shift from stimulation to inhibition and toxicity, with analogous trends that have been assessed for a number of xenobiotics. In view of optimizing the success of REE mixtures in stimulating crop yield and/or livestock growth or egg production, one should foresee the comparative concentration-related effects of individual REEs (e.g., Ce and La) vs. their mixtures, which may display distinct trends. The results might prompt further explorations on the use of REE mixtures vs. single REEs aimed at optimizing the preparation of fertilizers and feed additives, in view of the potential recognition of their use in agronomy and zootechny.

Influence of ionic cerium and cerium oxide nanoparticles on Zea mays seedlings grown with and without cadmium

Cerium (Ce⁴⁺) and cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂-NPs) have diversified reported effects on plants. Once dispersed in the environment their fate is not well understood, especially in co-existence with other pollutants like cadmium (Cd). The effect of co-application of Ce and Cd are reported in various studies, but the role of Ce source (ionic or bulk) and nanoparticle size is still unknown in cereal plants like maize (Zea mays). To better understand the synergistic effects of Ce and Cd, 500 mg kg^-1 Ce coming from ionic (Ce⁴⁺ as CeSO₄) and CeO₂ nano sources (10 nm, 50 nm, and 100 nm) alone and in combination with 0.5 mg Cd kg^-1 sand were applied to maize seedlings. Growth, physiology, root structure, anatomy, and ionic homeostasis in maize were measured. The results revealed that Ce⁴⁺ resulted in overall decrease in seedling growth, biomass and resulted in higher heavy metal (in control sets) and Cd (in Cd spiked sets) uptake in maize seedlings' root and shoot. The effects of CeO₂-NPs were found to be dependent on particle size; in fact, under Cd-0 (non-Cd spiked sets) CeO₂-100 nm showed beneficial effects compared to the control. While under co-application with Cd, CeO₂-50 nm showed net beneficial effects on maize seedling growth parameters. The Ce alone, and in combination with Cd, altered the root suberin barrier formation. Both ionic and nano Ce sources alone and in co-existence with Cd behaved differently for tissue elemental concentrations (Ce, Cd, micronutrients like B, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Fe and elements Co, Si) suggesting a strong influence of Cd-Ce coexistence on the element's uptake and translocation in maize.

Effects of Dietary Rare Earth Chitosan Chelate on Performance, Egg Quality, Immune and Antioxidant Capacity, and Intestinal Digestive Enzyme Activity of Laying Hens

Rare earth chitosan chelate salt (RECC) is a potential feed additive and is a product of the chelation effect between rare earth ions and chitosan. This research study aims to explore the effects of dietary RECC on performance, egg quality, intestinal digestive function, and the immune and antioxidant capacity of laying hens in the late phase of production. A total of 360 56-week-old Dawu Jinfeng laying hens were randomly allotted into four treatment groups with six replicates per treatment and 15 birds per replicate. The laying hens were fed the basal diet supplemented with, respectively, 0 (control: CON), 100 (R1), 200 (R2), and 400 (R3) mg/kg for 8 weeks. Dietary RECC significantly improved average daily feed intake (ADFI) and average daily egg yield in both linear and quadratic manner (p < 0.05). In addition, albumen height and HU were improved significantly (p < 0.05) in a dose-dependent manner of RECC. In addition, a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in serum TP, IgA, and MDA for the R1 group and IgG in the R2 group were notable, while the increase in serum TP and decrease in T-AOC were found for R3 dietary group compared to CON (p < 0.05). The level of intestinal IL-2 and TNF-α was decreased by dietary RECC (p < 0.01). The activities of the digestive enzyme (α-Amylase, lipase, and Trypsin) showed a quadratic change with an increase and then decrease in response to increasing dose of RECC, 200 mg/kg RECC significantly increased the activity of lipase and Trypsin (p < 0.01). Supplementation of dietary RECC at low doses compared to higher doses impacted positive effects on the antioxidant capacity and immune function (p < 0.05). The utilization of RECC as a feed additive in the diet of aged laying hens exerted beneficial effects on egg production, albumen quality, humoral immunity, inflammatory response, and activity of digestive enzymes. Thus, the regulation of antioxidant capacity and duodenal function via increased enzyme activity and immune and inflammatory response were critical to the improvement of laying performance and egg quality in aged hens. The optimal supplemental dose is 100-200 mg/kg.

Hormetic Effects of Cerium, Lanthanum and Their Combination at Sub-micromolar Concentrations in Sea Urchin Sperm

Rare earth elements (REEs) cerium (Ce) and lanthanum (La) and their combination were tested across a concentration range, from toxic (10^-4 to 10^-5 M) to lower concentrations (10^-6 to 10^-8 M) for their effects on sea urchin (Sphaerechinus granularis) sperm. A significantly decreased fertilization rate (FR) was found for sperm exposed to 10^-5 M Ce, La and their combination, opposed to a significant increase of FR following 10^-7 and 10^-8 M REE sperm exposure. The offspring of REE-exposed sperm showed significantly increased developmental defects following sperm exposure to 10^-5 M REEs vs. untreated controls, while exposure to 10^-7 and 10^-8 M REEs resulted in significantly decreased rates of developmental defects. Both of observed effects-on sperm fertilization success and on offspring quality-were closely exerted by Ce or La or their combination.

Outlining Potential Biomarkers of Exposure and Effect to Critical Minerals: Nutritionally Essential Trace Elements and the Rare Earth Elements

Emerging and low-carbon technologies and innovations are driving a need for domestic sources, sustainable use, and availability of critical minerals (CMs)-those vital to the national and economic security of the United States. Understanding the known and potential health effects of exposures to such mineral commodities can inform prudent and environmentally responsible handling and harvesting. We review the occurrence, use, predominant exposure pathways, and adverse outcome pathways (AOP) for human and fish receptors of those CMs that are nutritionally essential trace metals (specifically, cobalt, chromium, manganese, nickel, and zinc), as well as the rare earth elements. Biological responses to some elements having comparable biogeochemistry can sometimes be similar. Candidate quantifiable biomarkers for assessing potential AOP are conveyed.

Occurrence, geochemical characteristics, enrichment, and ecological risks of rare earth elements in sediments of "the Yellow river-Estuary-bay" system

Recent studies have suggested that rare earth elements (REEs) are contaminants of emerging concern. Moreover, the understanding of the occurrence and risks of REEs in river-estuary-bay systems is limited. The present study investigated the distributions, geochemical characteristics, and ecological risks of Y and 14 REEs (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) in sediments from the Yellow River to its estuary and adjacent Laizhou Bay. The average total concentrations of Y and REEs in the sediments generally increased from the Yellow River (149 mg/kg) to the estuary (165 mg/kg) and Laizhou Bay (173 mg/kg). In the estuarine core sediments, the concentrations of Y, light REEs (LREEs), and heavy REEs (HREEs) were in the ranges of 19.5-31.4 mg/kg, 58.6-156 mg/kg, and 12.3-19.1 mg/kg, respectively, from the 1700s to 2018, showing no obvious increasing or decreasing trends. The surface and core sediments from the river to the bay were characterized by obvious fractionation between LREEs and HREEs. In sediments, Fe minerals and clay are believed to promote the accumulation of REEs, especially HREEs. The enrichment levels of REEs generally increased from the middle reaches of the Yellow River to the bay, and Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb, and Lu were the most enriched elements in the sediments. Lu had moderate potential ecological risks in sediments of "the Yellow River-estuary-bay" system, and other REEs had relatively low ecological risks. The potential ecological risk indices of Y and REEs ranged from 78.7 to 144, showing increasing trends from the Yellow River to its estuary and adjacent bay, which should raise concerns regarding emerging contaminant management around estuarine and coastal regions.

Effect of cerium on the production of reactive oxygen species in the root of Arabidopsis thaliana: An in vitro study

In the current study, the effect of trivalent cerium (Ce³⁺ ) on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was investigated in the root of Arabidopsis thaliana by an in vitro study. The roots of A. thaliana were exposed with 0, 1, and 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ for 12 h in vitro. It was found that the level of H₂ O₂ , O₂ ^.- , and ·OH was enhanced by 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ , but reduced by 1 μmol/L Ce³⁺ . The activities of peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and superoxidase dismutase (SOD) were enhanced by 1 μmol/L Ce³⁺ , but reduced by 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ . Moreover, we used a laser-scanning confocal microscopy to detect the changes of ROS in the root cells of A. thaliana by using a fluorochrome 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (H₂ DCF-DA). It showed that the level of ROS was declined in the root cells treated by 1 μmol/L Ce³⁺ , but the oscillation of ROS was found in the root cells treated with 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ . In addition, REEs affect the uptake of mineral elements, which may be related to the oxidative stress in the cells of roots. In all, the data of our study indicated that the appropriate concentration of Ce³⁺ exhibited an anti-oxidation property and improved the defense system in the root cells of A. thaliana.

Accumulation and distribution characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) in the naturally grown marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) from the soil

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered environmental pollutants that have received extensive attention recently. The accumulation of REEs in plants is important because REEs can eventually enter the human body via the food chain. Marigolds are widely utilized as medicinal and commercial plants in medicine, feed, and therapeutics. Due to the extremely high demand for marigold in global, it is urgent to investigate the accumulation and distribution of REEs in marigold plants to reduce human and animal health risks. Marigold leaves tended to bioaccumulate the highest amounts of REEs from soil compared with other tissues. The distribution patterns of REEs in marigold were similar to those in the rhizosphere soil, which was enriched in light rare earth elements. Cerium accumulated most in marigold and soil, accounting for nearly 50% of ΣREEs, followed by lanthanum, neodymium, and yttrium. Roots were the most susceptible tissue affected by soil REE concentration, and a significant positive correlation was observed for REEs in the roots of marigold and soils (R = 0.87), while no significant correlation was observed for REEs in soils and other tissues. REEs were poorly transferred from soil to marigold, with bioaccumulation factor values for all tissues of marigold less than one. Additionally, REEs exhibited a positive correlation with Al and Fe in the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers of marigold. The present research revealed the biological interactions between marigold and soil and the distribution of REEs in various parts of marigold. It provides a reference for large-scale commercial cultivation and potential environmental risk in the future.

The elements of life: A biocentric tour of the periodic table

Living systems are built from a small subset of the atomic elements, including the bulk macronutrients (C,H,N,O,P,S) and ions (Mg,K,Na,Ca) together with a small but variable set of trace elements (micronutrients). Here, we provide a global survey of how chemical elements contribute to life. We define five classes of elements: those that are (i) essential for all life, (ii) essential for many organisms in all three domains of life, (iii) essential or beneficial for many organisms in at least one domain, (iv) beneficial to at least some species, and (v) of no known beneficial use. The ability of cells to sustain life when individual elements are absent or limiting relies on complex physiological and evolutionary mechanisms (elemental economy). This survey of elemental use across the tree of life is encapsulated in a web-based, interactive periodic table that summarizes the roles chemical elements in biology and highlights corresponding mechanisms of elemental economy.

Proteomic Analysis Reveals the Association between the Pathways of Glutathione and α-Linolenic Acid Metabolism and Lanthanum Accumulation in Tea Plants

Lanthanum can affect the growth and development of the tea plant. Tieguanyin (TGY) and Shuixian (SX) cultivars of Camellia sinensis were selected to explore the mechanism underlying the accumulation of lanthanum (tea plants' most accumulated rare earth element) through proteomics. Roots and fresh leaves of TGY and SX with low- and high-accumulation potential for lanthanum, respectively, were studied; 845 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified. Gene ontology analysis showed that DEPs were involved in redox processes and related to molecular functions. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes metabolic pathway analysis showed that DEPs were associated with glutathione (GSH) and α-linolenic acid metabolism, plant pathogen interaction, and oxidative phosphorylation. Thirty-seven proteins in the GSH metabolism pathway showed significant differences, wherein 18 GSH S-transferases showed differential expression patterns in the root system. Compared with the control, expression ratios of GST (TEA004130.1) and GST (TEA032216.1) in TGY leaves were 6.84 and 4.06, respectively, after lanthanum treatment; these were significantly higher than those in SX leaves. The LOX2.1 (TEA011765.1) and LOX2.1 (TEA011776.1) expression ratios in the α-linolenic acid metabolic pathway were 2.44 and 6.43, respectively, in TGY roots, which were significantly higher than those in SX roots. The synthesis of specific substances induces lanthanum-associated defense responses in TGY, which is of great significance for plant yield stability.

Mechanisms of cerium-induced stress in plants: A meta-analysis

A comprehensive evaluation of the effects of cerium on plants is lacking even though cerium is extensively applied to the environment. Here, the effects of cerium on plants were meta-analyzed using a newly developed database consisting of approximately 8500 entries of published data. Cerium affects plants by acting as oxidative stressor causing hormesis, with positive effects at low concentrations and adverse effects at high doses. Production of reactive oxygen species and its linked induction of antioxidant enzymes (e.g. catalase and superoxide dismutase) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (e.g. glutathione) are major mechanisms driving plant response mechanisms. Cerium also affects redox signaling, as indicated by altered GSH/GSSG redox pair, and electrolyte leakage, Ca²⁺, K⁺, and K⁺/Na⁺, indicating an important role of K⁺ and Na⁺ homeostasis in cerium-induced stress and altered mineral (ion) balance. The responses of the plants to cerium are further extended to photosynthesis rate (A), stomatal conductance (g_s), photosynthetic efficiency of PSII, electron transport rate, and quantum yield of PSII. However, photosynthesis response is regulated not only by physiological controls (e.g. g_s), but also by biochemical controls, such as via changed Hill reaction and RuBisCO carboxylation. Cerium concentrations <0.1-25 mg L^-1 commonly enhance chlorophyll a and b, g_s, A, and plant biomass, whereas concentrations >50 mg L^-1 suppress such fitness-critical traits at trait-specific concentrations. There was no evidence that cerium enhances yields. Observations were lacking for yield response to low concentrations of cerium, whereas concentrations >50 mg Kg^-1 suppress yields, in line with the response of chlorophyll a and b. Cerium affects the uptake and tissue concentrations of several micro- and macro-nutrients, including heavy metals. This study enlightens the understanding of some mechanisms underlying plant responses to cerium and provides critical information that can pave the way to reducing the cerium load in the environment and its associated ecological and human health risks.

On the meta-analysis of hormetic effects

The evidence for hormetic responses with chemical effects at doses lower than the no-observed-adverse-effect-level (sub-NOAEL) is increasing, creating a need for meta-analyses of sub-NOAEL effects across studies. However, the distinct features of hormetic responses complicate the procedures of meta-analyses aiming to study sub-NOAEL, hormetic effects, and there is no standardized methodology to serve as a guideline. In this piece, a protocol is proposed, which covers the selection of more holistic keywords to be integrated into the literature search queries, the designation of control, and the identification of NOAEL (and thus sub-NOAEL dose responses). It also considers the selection of the response indicators and the incorporation of time and dose as sources of variation. This protocol can serve as a reference point for a harmonized and more robust methodology to meta-analyze sub-NOAEL effects of chemicals on living organisms.

Dietary Exposure Assessment of Rare Earth Elements in the Chinese Population

Rare earth elements (REEs) are widely found in foods. A high intake of REEs may have associations with adverse effects on human health. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of REEs in foods in China and to assess the risk of dietary REEs exposure in the Chinese population. The mean concentrations of the total REEs in 27,457 food samples from 11 food categories ranged from 0.04 to 1.41 mg/kg. The daily mean dietary exposure of the total REEs was 1.62 μg/kg BW in the general Chinese population and ranged from 1.61 to 2.80 μg/kg BW in different sex-age groups. The high consumer exposure (95th percentile, P95) was 4.83 μg/kg BW, 9.38% of the temporary ADI (tADI) of REEs (51.5 μg/kg BW). None of the P95 exposure exceeded the tADI in all of the sub-groups. Lanthanum, cerium, and yttrium accounted for approximately 63% of the total exposure of the 16 REEs. The hazard index of 16 REEs was far below 1. Therefore, the health risk of dietary REEs exposure in the general Chinese population was low. No cumulative risk was found for the 16 REEs in China. The results indicate there was no need to stipulate the limits of REEs in foods.

Regulatory actions of rare earth elements (La and Gd) on the cell cycle of root tips in rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.)

The continuous expansion of the application of rare earth elements (REEs) in various fields has attracted attention to their biosafety. At present, the molecular mechanisms underlying the biological effects of REEs are unclear. In this study, the effects of lanthanum (La) and gadolinium (Gd) on cell cycle progression in the root tips of rice seedlings were investigated. Low concentrations of REEs (0.1 mg L^-1) induced an increase in the number of cells in the prophase and metaphase, while high concentrations of REEs (10 mg L^-1) induced an increase in the number of cells in the late and terminal stages of the cell cycle, and apoptosis or necrosis. Additionally, low concentrations of REEs induced a significant increase in the expression of the cell cycle factors WEE1, CDKA;1, and CYCB1;1, and promoted the G2/M phase and accelerated root tip growth. However, at high REEs concentrations, the DNA damage response sensitized by BRCA1, MRE11, and TP53 could that prevent root tip growth by inhibiting the transcription factor E2F, resulting in obvious G1/S phase transition block and delayed G2/M phase conversion. Furthermore, by comparing the biological effect mechanisms of La and Gd, we found that these two REEs share regulatory actions on the cell cycle of root tips in rice seedlings.

Phytotoxicity effect concentrations (ECx) for Ce, Nd and Eu added to soil relative to total and bioaccessible soil REE concentrations, and tissue REE accumulations

Toxicity thresholds (EC_x) for radish, tomato, and durum wheat growth endpoints (shoot length, shoot mass, root length) to Ce, Nd or Eu added to a black organic soil were determined from 14-day dose-response growth assays. EC₁₀ expressed as total soil [REE] had a more than twenty-fold range, from 337 mg/kg to more than >8000 mg/kg. Averaged over all REEs and endpoints, durum wheat was more tolerant than radish and tomato; and averaged over all endpoints, Eu appeared to be the most phytotoxic of the three REEs. Bioaccessibility of each REE was determined by extraction with 0.01 M CaCl₂, which for all three REEs in this soil was quite low, <0.10% of total. However, bioaccessibility of Eu was five or six times greater than that for Ce and Nd, and thus could explain its apparently greater toxicity, namely that Eu was more likely to be accumulated at the site of toxic action in the plant. To discern inherent toxicity from enhanced bioaccumulation, concentration of each REE in root and shoot tissues was determined, for a tissue-residue approach to toxicity assessment. The EC₁₀ expressed as tissue concentration was lower for Nd than for Ce and Eu, thus the most toxic of the three REEs. As for many cationic inorganic elements, toxicity varies with the chemistry of the exposure medium due to its effects on bioaccessibility. Simple methods to harmonize toxicity thresholds from different media enables greater integration into regulatory standards. When EC₂₅ from this and other studies were normalized to CaCl₂-extractable REE in their respective media, the range in Ce EC₂₅ was reduced from 20-fold to 2.5-fold, and the range for Eu EC₂₅ was reduced from 25-fold to 3-fold. This novel and low-input approach to meta-analysis of toxicity thresholds demonstrates the value of considering soil physico-chemical properties as modifiers of soil REE toxicity.

Rare earth elements in the upland soils of northern China: Spatial variation, relationships, and risk assessment

While global demand for rare earth elements (REEs) is rapidly growing, recent studies have suggested that REEs are pollutants of emerging concern. In this study, the spatial distribution and risk assessments of REEs in the upland soils of northern China were comprehensively investigated. The total REE concentrations ranged from 81 to 180 mg/kg, with average concentrations of 123, 128, and 98.3 mg/kg in the northwestern, northern, and northeastern zones, respectively. The decreasing trend of REE contents from northwest to northeast might be influenced by variation in the REE metallogenic belt distribution, mining activities, and precipitation intensity in these regions. The ratio of light rare elements (LREEs) to heavy rare elements (HREEs) ranged from 5.04 to 9.06, revealing obvious fractionation between them in upland soils and indicating that LREEs enrichment was common in northern China. The significantly positive correlations between the REEs indicated that REEs might frequently coexist and share similar sources in the upland soils of northern China. Based on a modified ecological risk index (eRI), REEs were estimated to pose relatively low ecological risks to current environmental residues, with eRI values ranging from 0.564 to 0.984. Fortunately, the estimated daily intakes of REEs from soils for children (1.08-2.41 μg/kg/day) and adults (0.119-0.312 μg/kg/day) were well below the safety thresholds. However, the health risks posed by REEs in upland soils were estimated to be higher for children. Thus, the continuous monitoring of REE abundance in soils is essential to avoid potential health risks.

Photosynthetic, antioxidative, and metabolic adjustments of a crop plant to elevated levels of La and Ce exposure

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been widely applied as fertilizers in farmland of China for decades to improve the yield and quality of crops. Unfortunately, adverse effects on plants have been observed due to overdosing with REEs. Until now, the toxicology of REEs was mainly evaluated based on phenotypic responses, but knowledge gaps still exist concerning their metabolic effects. Here, the physiological responses and nontargeted metabolomics studies were combined to systematically explore the potential effects of La and Ce on a crop plant, wheat Triticum aestivum. It was observed that REEs accumulated in the shoots of wheat, with significant reduction of the shoot biomass at higher exposure doses. The disturbance of photosynthesis and induced oxidative stress were identified by analyzing indicators of the photosynthetic (chlorophyll a/b, carotenoid and rubisco) and antioxidant systems (POD, CAT, SOD, GSH and MDA). Furthermore, the global metabolic profiles of REEs treatment groups and the non-exposed control group were screened and compared, and the metabolomic disturbance of REEs was dose-dependent. A high overlap of significantly changed metabolites and matched disturbed biological pathways was found between La and Ce treatments, indicating similarity of their toxicity mechanism in wheat shoots. Generally, the perturbed metabolomic pathways were mainly related to carbohydrate, amino acid and nucleotide/side metabolism, suggesting a disturbance of carbon and nitrogen metabolism, which finally affected the growth of wheat. We thus proved the potential adverse effect of inappropriate application of REEs in crop plants and postulated metabolomics as a feasible tool to identify the underlying toxicological mechanisms.

Water quality criteria for lanthanum for freshwater aquatic organisms derived via species sensitivity distributions and interspecies correlation estimation models

The increasing exploitation and application of rare earth elements (REEs) may induce hazardous risks to freshwater aquatic organisms. Due to the lack of water quality criteria (WQC) and sufficient reliable toxicity data, little information is available on the ecological risk of REEs in surface water. In this study, lanthanum (La) toxicity data were collected from published toxicological studies, and the data quality was assessed using a toxicological data reliability assessment tool. To obtain more toxicity data, Daphnia magna, Cyprinus carpio, and Dania rerio embryos were selected as surrogate species, and an interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) model was used to predict the toxicity of La for untested species. The species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) of La toxicity and WQC were investigated. Differences were observed in the hazardous concentrations for 5% of species (HC₅), but no statistically significant differences were noted in the SSD curves between the measured acute toxicity data and the predicted data. For the SSDs constructed from the measured toxicity data, the ICE-predicted toxicity data and all acute data supplemented with the ICE-predicted data, the acute WQC values of La were 88, 1022 and 256 μg/L, respectively. According to the SSD and corresponding HC₅ of chronic toxicity data, the chronic WQC was 14 μg/L. The results provide a scientific reference for establishing WQC for freshwater aquatic organisms and ecological risk assessments of REEs.

Inflammation and accompanied disrupted hematopoiesis in adult mouse induced by rare earth element nanoparticles

Rare earth element nanoparticles (REE NPs) or agents have been used extensively in various fields. Human exposure to REE NPs is an increasing concern. To date, REE NP-mediated comprehensive immune responses after incorporation into the body remain unclear. In our study, using gadolinium oxide NPs (Gd₂O₃) as a typical REE NP, we systematically investigated immune responses in vivo. The liver and spleen were the main sites where Gd₂O₃ retained and accumulated, while Gd₂O₃ content per unit tissue mass in the spleen was 4.4 times higher than that in the liver. Gd₂O₃ increased the number of monocyte-derived macrophages and myeloid-derived dendritic cells (M-DCs) in the liver. In the spleen, Gd₂O₃ caused infiltration of neutrophils, M-DCs, and B cells. The accumulation of Gd₂O₃ in the liver or spleen also contributed to an increased concentration of cytokines in peripheral blood. In both the bone marrow and spleen, Gd₂O₃ led to increased populations of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), multipotent progenitors, and common lymphoid progenitors. Compared to the decreased monocytes in peripheral blood on day 2, a significant decrease of circulating lymphocytes on day 7 was still observed, suggesting the exposure duration led to variable effects. This might be explained by the sustained accumulation of Gd₂O₃ in the liver and spleen. Together, our study systemically depicted the alterations in mature immune alterations together with hematopoiesis in both myeloid and lymphoid lineages induced by Gd₂O₃ exposure. Our findings will facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the interactions of immune system with REE NPs in vivo.

Association of Rare Earth Elements with Passive Smoking among Housewives in Shanxi Province, China

Background: Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging contaminants. Previous studies reported the association between REEs and active smoking, but little is known about the effects of passive smoking on this condition. In China, female passive smoking is widespread, particularly in rural areas. Objective: This study aimed to estimate the relationship between REEs accumulation and passive smoking among rural housewives. Methods: We recruited 385 subjects in Shanxi Province of northern China, of whom 117 housewives were exposed to passive smoking, and 268 were not. We analyzed 15 REEs in the hair of housewives with ICP–MS, including lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, and yttrium. Results: The results indicated higher levels of 14 REEs except for Sm in both the univariate and adjusted models among the housewives exposed to passive smoking. The increasing linear trend of adjusted odds ratios of 15 REEs supported their association. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models showed that 15 REEs had a significant overall effect, and Eu had a single-exposure effect with passive smoking. Conclusion: We concluded that passive smoking might be associated with increased exposure to REEs among rural housewives.

Some examples of interactions between certain rare earth elements and soil

The rare earth elements represent an increasingly more and more important industrial resource. The increased use may result in waste generation, and their impact upon the environment quality has not been studied sufficiently. Their interaction with soil has been studied in this paper. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm has been determined for lanthanum, erbium and gadolinium at three different soil types (humus, clay and sand type), whereas the sequential extraction at these soil types has been applied for lanthanum and neodymium. The interaction of certain rare earth elements with soil components has been tested as well as the quantity in which these elements are bound to soil and later on extracted in solutions. The objective was to determine the soil capacity for disposal, first of all, of the electronic waste that contains these elements and to assume their fate in the environment.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Effects of Rare Earth Elements on Growth and Chlorophyll of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) Seedling

Rare earth elements (REEs) of low concentration are usually beneficial to plant growth, while they are toxic at high concentrations. The effects of treatment with lanthanum (La) (10 and 20 μM), cerium (Ce) (10 and 20 μM), and terbium (Tb) (10 and 20 μM) on seedling growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), which is one of the most important perennial leguminous forages in the world, were studied. The results showed that all three REE treatments quickened the germination of seeds. The length of shoot under La (20 μM) treatment was significantly shortened (P < 0.05). In addition, treatment with La, Ce, and Tb had a "hormesis effect" on root length. There was a significant decrease in chlorophyll content on treatment with the three REEs, and the degree of decline was in the order of La < Ce < Tb, under the same concentration. In vitro experiments and quantum chemical calculations were further performed to explain why the treatments with REEs reduced the chlorophyll content. In vitro experiments showed that La, Ce, and Tb treatments reduced the absorbance of chlorophyll, and the decrease followed in the order of La > Ce > Tb. Quantum chemical calculations predicted that the decrease in absorption intensity was caused by the reactions between La, Ce, Tb, and chlorophyll, which formed lanthanides-chlorophyll; and there were five types of stable lanthanides-chlorophyll. In conclusion, the decrease in chlorophyll content on treatment with REEs was caused by the change in chlorophyll structure.

Role of Oxidative Stress in La2O3 Nanoparticle-Induced Cytotoxicity and Apoptosis in CHANG and HuH-7 Cells

Introduction

Nanoparticles are extensively applied in pharmaceutical, agriculture, food processing industries, and in many other fields. In the current experiment, we have determined the mechanism of toxicity of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (La₂O₃ NPs) on human liver cell lines.

Methods

Before the investigation, we have characterized the size and shape of La₂O₃ NPs using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The mean size of the La₂O₃ NPs was found 32 ±1.6 nm with a sheet-like shape. The cytotoxicity effect of La₂O₃ NPs for 24 h on CHANG and HuH-7 cells was determined by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays.

Results

The cytotoxicity was observed in a concentration-dependent manner in both cells but NPs were more toxic to HuH-7 than CHANG cells. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was determined using fluorescent dye 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFDA) and high green fluorescence was observed in HuH-7 cells than CHANG cells. Oxidative stress biomarker such as glutathione (GSH) was decreased and antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) was increased but SOD level was decreased in HuH-7 cells than CHANG cells. Apoptotic cells were determined by using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis. Maximum percentage of the apoptotic cell was observed at 300 µg/mL in HuH-7 cells. DNA double-stranded breakage was observed by comet assay and maximum DNA damage was found in CHANG cells than HuH-7 cells at 300 µg/mL La2O3 NPs for 24 h.

Conclusion

Thus, this study demonstrated that La2O3 NPs were toxic to human liver cells and induced more toxicity in HuH-7 cells than CHANG cells.
