Nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors for detection of amino acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and muscle tissue. They also play a significant role in physiological processes related to energy, recovery, mood, muscle and brain function, fat burning and stimulating growth hormone or insulin secretion. Accurate determination of amino acids in biological fluids is necessary because any changes in their normal ranges in the body warn diseases like kidney disease, liver disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. To date, many methods such as liquid chromatography, fluorescence mass spectrometry, etc. have been used for the determination of amino acids. Compared with the above techniques, electrochemical systems using modified electrodes offer a rapid, accurate, cheap, real-time analytical path through simple operations with high selectivity and sensitivity. Nanomaterials have found many interests to create smart electrochemical sensors in different application fields e.g. biomedical, environmental, and food analysis because of their exceptional properties. This review summarizes recent advances in the development of nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors in 2017-2022 for the detection of amino acids in various matrices such as serum, urine, blood and pharmaceuticals.

Enhanced Cr(vi) removal by hierarchical CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2via reduction and adsorption processes

CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2 shows excellent removal performance towards Cr(vi) due to its excellent electrostatic effect as well as the reduction process originating from the –CH group.

Electrochemical Amino Acid Sensing: A Review on Challenges and Achievements

The rapid growth of research in electrochemistry in the last decade has resulted in a significant advancement in exploiting electrochemical strategies for assessing biological substances. Among these, amino acids are of utmost interest due to their key role in human health. Indeed, an unbalanced amino acid level is the origin of several metabolic and genetic diseases, which has led to a great need for effective and reliable evaluation methods. This review is an effort to summarize and present both challenges and achievements in electrochemical amino acid sensing from the last decade (from 2010 onwards) to show where limitations and advantages stem from. In this review, we place special emphasis on five well-known electroactive amino acids, namely cysteine, tyrosine, tryptophan, methionine and histidine. The recent research and achievements in this area and significant performance metrics of the proposed electrochemical sensors, including the limit of detection, sensitivity, stability, linear dynamic range(s) and applicability in real sample analysis, are summarized and presented in separate sections. More than 400 recent scientific studies were included in this review to portray a rich set of ideas and exemplify the capabilities of the electrochemical strategies to detect these essential biomolecules at trace and even ultra-trace levels. Finally, we discuss, in the last section, the remaining issues and the opportunities to push the boundaries of our knowledge in amino acid electrochemistry even further.

Synthesis, characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity study of Co and Ni ferrite nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel method

In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of NiFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) which are widely used in the biomedical area. There is still limited knowledge how the properties of these materials are influenced by different chemical routes. In this work, we investigated the effect of heat treatment over cytotoxicity of cobalt and niquel ferrites NPs synthesized by sol-gel method. Then the samples were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis (FTIR), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The average crystallite sizes of the particles were found to be in the range of 20–35 nm. The hemocompatibility (erythrocytes and leukocytes) was checked. Cytotoxicity results were similar to those of the control test sample, therefore suggesting hemocompatibility of the tested materials.

NIR-Driven Intracellular Photocatalytic O2 Evolution on Z-Scheme Ni3S2/Cu1.8S@HA for Hypoxic Tumor Therapy

Hypoxia in a tumor microenvironment (TME) has inhibited the photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy. Here, Ni₃S₂/Cu_1.8S nanoheterostructures were synthesized as a new photosensitizer, which also realizes the intracellular photocatalytic O₂ evolution to relieve hypoxia in TME and enhance PDT as well. With the narrow band gap (below 1.5 eV), the near infrared (NIR) (808 nm) can stimulate their separation of the electron-hole. The novel Z-scheme nanoheterostructures, testified by experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, possess a higher redox ability, endowing the photoexited holes with sufficient potential to oxide H₂O into O₂, directly. Meanwhile, the photostimulated electrons can capture the dissolved O₂ to form a toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, Ni₃S₂/Cu_1.8S nanocomposites also possess the catalase-/peroxidase-like activity to convert the endogenous H₂O₂ into ·OH and O₂, which not only cause chemodynamic therapy (CDT) but also alleviate hypoxia to assist the PDT as well. In addition, owing to the narrow band gap, they possess a high NIR harvest and great photothermal conversion efficiency (49.5%). It is noted that the nanocomposites also exhibit novel biodegradation and can be metabolized and eliminated via feces and urine within 2 weeks. The present single electrons in Ni/Cu ions induce the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ability for Ni₃S₂/Cu_1.8S. To make sure that the cancer cells were specifically targeted, hyaluronic acid (HA) was grafted outside and Ni₃S₂/Cu_1.8S@HA integrated photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and photothermal therapy (PTT) to exhibit the great anticancer efficiency for hypoxic tumor elimination.

Review on the advancements of magnetic gels: towards multifunctional magnetic liposome-hydrogel composites for biomedical applications

Magnetic gels have been gaining great attention in nanomedicine, as they combine features of hydrogels and magnetic nanoparticles into a single system. The incorporation of liposomes in magnetic gels further leads to a more robust multifunctional system enabling more functions and spatiotemporal control required for biomedical applications, which includes on-demand drug release. In this review, magnetic gels components are initially introduced, as well as an overview of advancements on the development, tuneability, manipulation and application of these materials. After a discussion of the advantages of combining hydrogels with liposomes, the properties, fabrication strategies and applications of magnetic liposome-hydrogel composites (magnetic lipogels or magnetolipogels) are reviewed. Overall, the progress of magnetic gels towards smart multifunctional materials are emphasized, considering the contributions for future developments.

Recent developments in voltammetric and amperometric sensors for cysteine detection

This review article aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in the voltammetric and amperometric sensing of cysteine (Cys). The introduction summarizes the important role of Cys as an essential amino acid, techniques for its sensing, and the utilization of electrochemical methods and chemically modified electrodes for its determination. The main section covers voltammetric and amperometric sensing of Cys based on glassy carbon electrodes, screen printed electrodes, and carbon paste electrodes, modified with various electrocatalytic materials. The conclusion section discusses the current challenges of Cys determination and the future perspectives.

Plant-derived silica nanoparticles and composites for biosensors, bioimaging, drug delivery and supercapacitors: a review

Silica nanoparticles have rapidly found applications in medicine, supercapacitors, batteries, optical fibers and concrete materials, because silica nanoparticles have tunable physical, chemical, optical and mechanical properties. In most applications, high-purity silica comes from synthetic organic precursors, yet this approach could be costly, polluting and non-biocompatible. Alternatively, natural silica sources from biomass are often cheap and abundant, yet they contain impurities. Silica can be extracted from corn cob, coffee husk, rice husk, sugarcane bagasse and wheat husk wastes, which are often disposed of in rivers, lands and ponds. These wastes can be used to prepare homogenous silica nanoparticles. Here we review properties, preparation and applications of silica nanoparticles. Preparation includes chemical and biomass methods. Applications include biosensors, bioimaging, drug delivery and supercapacitors. In particular, to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, recent research has shown that silver nanocluster/silica deposited on a mask reduces SARS-Cov-2 infectivity to zero.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in electroanalytical methods: A review

Magnetic nanomaterials (MNMs) have gained high attention in different fields of studies due to their ferromagnetic/superparamagnetic properties and their low toxicity and high biocompatibility. MNMs contain magnetic elements such as iron and nickel in metallic, bimetallic, metal oxide, and mixed metal oxide. In electroanalytical methods, MNMs have been applied as sorbents for sample preparation before the electrochemical detection (sorbent role), as the electrode modifier (catalytic role), and the integration of the above two roles (as both sorbent and catalytic agent). In this paper, the application of MNMs in electroanalytical methods have been classified based on the main role of the nanomaterial and discussed separately. Furthermore, catalytic activities of MNMs in electroanalytical methods such as redox electrocatalytic, nanozymes catalytic (peroxidase, catalase activity, oxidase activity, superoxide dismutase activity), catalyst gate, and nanocontainer have been discussed.

Mesopourous Fe3O4@SiO2-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite: Green sonochemical synthesis using strawberry fruit extract as a capping agent, characterization and their application in sulfasalazine delivery and cytotoxicity

The present study introduces a simple, biocompatible and effective drug delivery system by using mesoporous nanocomposite-based platform. To achieve this goal, mesopourous Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite (mFSH) was synthesized by sonochemical process in presence of strawberry fruit extract as capping agent (mFSH-SW). The impact of various factors such as sonication time (5, 15, 30 and 45 min), capping agent (cherry (CH), strawberry (SW), malus domestica (MD), andean blackberry (AB)), pH (10, 11 and 12) and sonication power (30, 60 and 80 W) were investigated to reach optimum condition. To reach high efficiency of drug loading, mFSH was grafted with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES). Uniform, regular and spherical morphology of nanocomposite were specified by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dynamic light scattering (DLS), nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The mean pore size, surface area, and pore volume of mFSH-SW were 63.2 m² g^-1, 14.1 nm and 0.24 cm³ g^-1, respectively. Sulfasalazine (SLN) loading and release were carried out by various products. The functionalized mFSH-SW showed high adsorption capacity (approximately 59.1 %) for SLN that possesses amino functional groups. The results showed that 100 % of SLN-loaded nanocomposite could be released after 36 h at intestinal conditions (pH = 6.8). In addition, in-vitro and in-vivo toxicity investigations of product were performed with apoptosis/necrosis, XTT and pathology assay, respectively. All in all, unique properties of the nanocomposite including low toxicity, high drug loading, slow release and biodegradable showed that it can be used in biomedical sciences.

A voltammetric sensor based on reduced graphene oxide-hemin-Ag nanocomposites for sensitive determination of tyrosine

A novel voltammetric sensor was designed and used for the determination of l-tyrosine (l-Tyr) by surface modification of a glassy carbon electrode with reduced graphene oxide-hemin-Ag (rGO-H-Ag) nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method and characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The determination of l-Tyr was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and further quantified using differential pulse voltammetry. The results revealed a significant enhanced electrochemical oxidation effect for l-Tyr at the nanocomposites modified electrode. Two linear ranges from 0.1 to 100 μM and 100 to 1000 μM as well as a low detection limit of 30 nM (S/N = 3) were obtained. In addition, the sensor also demonstrated good selectivity, reproducibility and stability.

A novel electrochemical sensor for the sensitive determination of l-Tyr was designed with a rGO-H-Ag nanocomposite modified electrode.

Evaluation of Cell-detaching Effect of EDTA in Combination with Oxaliplatin for a Possible Application in HIPEC After Cytoreductive Surgery: A Preliminary in-vitro Study

BACKGROUND

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), a commonly used compound in laboratory medicine, is known for its membrane-destabilization capacity and cell-detaching effect. This preliminary study aims to assess the potential of EDTA in removing residual tumor cell clusters. Using an in-vitro model, this effect is then compared to the cytotoxic effect of oxaliplatin which is routinely administered during HIPEC procedures. The overall cell toxicity and cell detaching effects of EDTA are compared to those of Oxaliplatin and the additive effect is quantified.

METHODS

HT-29 (ATCC® HTB-38™) cells were treated with A) EDTA only B) Oxaliplatin only and C) both agents using an in-vitro model. Cytotoxicity and cell detachment following EDTA application were measured via colorimetric MTS assay. Additionally, detached cell groups were visualized using light microscopy and further analyzed by means of electron microscopy.

RESULTS

When solely applied, EDTA does not exhibit any cell toxicity nor does it add any toxicity to oxaliplatin. However, EDTA enhances the detachment of adherent colon carcinoma cells by removing up to 65% (p<0.05) of the total initial cell amount. In comparison, the sole application of highly concentrated oxaliplatin induced cell mortality by up to 66% (p<0.05). While detached cells showed no mortality after EDTA treatment, cell clusters exhibited a decreased amount of extracellular and adhesive matrix in-between cells. When combined, Oxaliplatin and EDTA display a significant additive effect with only 30% (mean p <0.01) of residual vitality detected in the initial well. EDTA and Oxaliplatin remove up to 81% (p <0.01) of adhesive HT-29 cells from the surface either by cytotoxic effects or cell detachment.

CONCLUSION

Our data support EDTA's potential to remove microscopical tumor cell clusters from the peritoneum and possibly act as a supplementary agent in HIPEC procedures with chemotherapy. While adding EDTA to HIPEC procedures may significantly decrease the risk of PM recurrence, further in-vivo and clinical trials are required to evaluate this effect.

Biomimetic nanoparticle loading obatoclax mesylate for the treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) through suppressing Bcl-2 signaling

Lung cancer still remains a leading cause of cancer mortality in the world. Obatoclax mesylate (OM), a B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia/lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family antagonist, is a potential antitumor drug. However, its poor aqueous solubility restricts its clinical application. Although these inherent defects, nanotechnology can be used to improve the solubility and tumor target of OM, promoting its antitumor efficiency. In the present study, the poly(lactic-coglycolic acid) (PLGA) was used and combined with red blood-cell membrane (RBCm) to explore if OM-loaded RBCm nanoparticles could improve the antitumor efficacy of OM for the treatment of lung cancer with relatively lower side effects compared with the free OM. The good physicochemical stability of the prepared RBCm-OM/PLGA nanoparticles was confirmed, and the optimal size of 153 nm was screened out, along with sustained drug release behavior. We found that RBCm-OM/PLGA nanoparticles effectively reduced the proliferation of lung cancer cells. Additionally, RBCm-OM/PLGA nanoparticles considerably induced apoptosis in lung cancer cells by reducing Bcl-2 expression levels, accompanied with the improved Cyto-c releases in cytoplasm and Caspase-3 activation. Mitochondrial membrane potential was also obviously impaired in lung cancer cells incubated with RBCm-OM/PLGA nanoparticles. Compared with free OM, RBCm-OM/PLGA nanoparticles could greatly prolong the drug circulation time in vivo and upgraded the drug concentration accumulated in tumor tissue. Furthermore, RBCm-OM/PLGA nanoparticles exerted stronger antitumor efficacy in vivo against lung cancer progression with superior safety. Therefore, RBCm-OM/PLGA nanoparticles provided new potential for lung cancer therapy with the improved safety and therapeutic effect.

Preparation of A Magnetic Nanosensor Based on Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles for The Electrochemical Determination of Methyldopa in The Presence of Uric Acid

AIM AND OBJECTIVE

Methyldopa is one of the medications that is used for the treatment of hypertension. Therefore, the determination of methyldopa in the presence of other biological components is essential. In this work, a promising electrochemical sensor based on CoFe₂O₄ magnetic nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode (CoFe₂O₄/GCE) was developed for electrochemical determination of methyldopa in the presence of uric acid. Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized via chemical method.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Characterizing the CoFe₂O₄ was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and cyclic voltammetry techniques.

RESULTS

Under the optimal experimental conditions, the current response of the electrochemical sensor obtained with differential pulse voltammetry was increased linearly in the concentration range from 1.45 to 15.1 μmol L^-1 with the detection limit of 1.07 μmol L^-1 for methyldopa. Also, by using the proposed method, methyldopa and uric acid could be analyzed in a mixture independently. The difference in peak potential for analytes is about 150 mV.

CONCLUSION

The present sensor was successfully applied for the determination of methyldopa in the presence of uric acid in biological samples and the pharmaceutical samples with satisfactory results.

Oscillating of physicochemical and biological properties of metal particles on their sonochemical treatment

Different metal particles are increasingly used to target bacteria as an alternative to antibiotics. Despite numerous data about treating bacterial infections, the utilization of metal particles in antibacterial coatings for implantable devices and medicinal materials promoting wound healing. The antibacterial mechanisms of nanoscale and microscale particles are poorly understood, but the currently accepted mechanisms include oxidative stress induction, metal ion release, and non-oxidative mechanisms. Thus, investigation of the antibacterial mechanisms of nanostructured metal particles is very important for the development of more effective antimicrobial materials. However, it is very difficult to develop a proper model for revealing the antibacterial mechanisms due to difficulty to choose a method that allows obtaining materials of various properties under approximately the same conditions. In this paper, we propose a green and feasible technique to create critical conditions for modification of zinc particles at highly non-equilibrium states. We demonstrate that the sonication process can be useful for fabrication the materials with oscillating physical, chemical and antibacterial properties. We believe this method besides medical applications can be also used in natural science basic research as an experimental tool for modelling the physical and chemical processes. After the sonication, the zinc particles exhibit a different surface morphology and amount of leached Zn²⁺ ions compared to initial ones. It has been revealed that oscillations of the Zn²⁺ ions concentration lead to oscillation the antibacterial properties. Thus, the properties of the materials can be easily altered by adjusting the ultrasound energy dissipated via varying the sonication.

Green synthesis of Zingiberis rhizoma-based carbon dots attenuates chemical and thermal stimulus pain in mice

Aim: To evaluate the analgesic activity of Zingiberis rhizoma-based carbon dots (ZR-CDs). Materials & methods: Novel ZR-CDs were prepared via a facile, green pyrolysis method. Microstructure, optical and functional group properties were characterized. Acetic acid writhing, hot-plate and tail-immersion tests were performed using mice to evaluate the analgesic activity of ZR-CDs, followed by a preliminary study on the analgesic mechanism. Results: ZR-CDs with a quantum yield of 5.2% had a diameter ranging from 2.23 to 3.77 nm. Remarkable analgesic effect of ZR-CDs was observed against both thermal and chemical stimulus tests, possibly mediated by an opioid-like mechanism and the regulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine levels. Conclusion: ZR-CDs have a promising potential for biomedical application in relieving pain-related diseases.

Pursuing for the better lung cancer therapy effect: Comparison of two different kinds of hyaluronic acid and nitroimidazole co-decorated nanomedicines

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer associated deaths worldwide. Compared with traditional chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), specific targeted therapies are better choices for advanced patients to improve their survival. In this study, we attempted to fabricate Nitroimidazoles (NI) and Hyaluronic acid (HA) co-decorated, cisplatin (DDP) loaded polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) (NI/HA-DDP-PNPs) and lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPNs) (NI/HA-DDP-LPNs) for the facilitated drug delivery at lung tumor regions (hypoxic regions). In vitro cytotoxicity and cellular uptake; In vivo anti-tumor activity and in vivo tissue biodistribution of PNPs and LPNs were evaluated and compared in lung carcinoma cells and xenograft. Hydrodynamic size of NI/HA-DDP-LPNs was 185.6 ± 4.7 nm, which is larger than that of NI/HA-DDP-PNPs (136.7 ± 3.5 nm). The zeta potential of NI/HA-DDP-PNPs (-31.2 ± 2.7 mV) was more negative than NI/HA-DDP-LPNs (-22.3 ± 2.1 mV). The peak plasma concentration (C_max) achieved from NI/HA-DDP-PNPs and NI/HA-DDP-LPNs was 35.2 ± 1.6 and 37.3 ± 1.7 μg/mL. The half-life (T_1/2) of NI/HA-DDP-PNPs and NI/HA-DDP-LPNs was 12.03 ± 0.75 and 11.78 ± 0.89 h. Area Under Curve (AUC) of NI/HA-DDP-PNPs and NI/HA-DDP-LPNs showed no significant difference while greater than other groups. NI/HA-DDP-LPNs exhibited excellent antitumor effect against drug-resistant human lung cancer A549/DDP cells in vitro and in vivo, better than that of NI/HA-DDP-PNPs. Considering that the low toxicity of NI/HA-DDP-LPNs and NI/HA-DDP-PNPs, NI/HA-DDP-LPNs could be a more promising system for lung cancer targeted therapy.

Manganese oxide doped carbon dots for temperature-responsive biosensing and target bioimaging

We report on the synthesis of manganese oxide doped CDs (MnO_x-CDs) by a hydrothermal strategy using manganese (III) acetylacetonate (Mn(III) (C₅H₇O₂)₃) as the only raw materials. The MnO_x-CDs exhibit water solubility, favorable biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and show blue fluorescence with excitation/emission maxima at 326/442 nm with a quantum yield of 11.3%, allowing efficient cellular imaging. The MnO_x-CDs have a reversible temperature-sensitive fluorescent property in vitro within 10-60 °C, which can also be used as a sensitive thermometer in living cells. By a scratch assay, the MnO_x-CDs can restrain the migration of HepG2 cancer cells, which make the MnO_x-CDs be attractive candidates for liver cancer adjuvant treatment. Besides, the fluorescence of the MnO_x-CDs is quenched in the presence of Fe³⁺ due to the formation of a nonfluorescent MnO_x-CDs-Fe³⁺ complex between oxygen-containing groups on the surface of MnO_x-CDs and Fe³⁺, and the quenched fluorescence of MnO_x-CDs can be turn-on by dissociation of MnO_x-CDs-Fe³⁺ complexes by biothiols including L-cysteine, homocysteine and glutathione. Therefore, the Fe³⁺ and biothiols can be sequentially detected with high reliability and accuracy via exploiting the on-off-on nanosensor at room temperature, respectively. Further application to detection biothiols in human serum indicated that the probe was practicality and feasibility in medical field.

Selective ultrasonic assisted synthesis of iron oxide mesoporous structures based on sulfonated melamine formaldehyde and survey of nanorod/sphere, sphere and core/shell on their catalysts properties for the Biginelli reaction

Sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde including iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by sulfonation of melamine-formaldehyde and then Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were bounded onto the surface of sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde (SMF). Two different iron oxide nanostructures including nanorods/spheres and nanospheres on sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde (SMF/Fe₃O₄) were obtained only by modifying the time of radiation from 4 to 8 h in our synthetic method. Furthermore core/shell (Fe₃O₄@SMF) was prepared by entrapping Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles as the core and sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde as the outer shell. The prepared components were characterized via, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), titration, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Barret-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analysis, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). According to obtained results, the synthesized products had a thermal stability near 180 °C, particle-size distribution around of 20-140 nm and surface area between 6 and 10 m²/g. In this study, vapor was used as a heat source. These effective and magnetically recoverable catalysts were employed for the synthesis of numerous 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones by utilizing aldehydes, ethylacetoacetate and urea. Functional easiness, excellent yields, short reaction time, the simplicity of work-up or filter, and thermal stability of these catalysts created them as appropriate heterogeneous systems and acceptable alternative to different heterogeneous catalysts.

Magnetically retrievable ferrite nanoparticles in the catalysis application

In the present review, we summarized the applications of magnetic spinel ferrite nanoparticles as catalysts in organic reactions and transformations. Catalytic applications are comprised of using mostly cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc ferrites, along with their mixed-metal combinations based on nano ferrites. The spinel ferrites (SFs) are gained principally by wet-chemical, sol-gel or co-precipitation methods, more infrequently by the mechanical high-energy ball milling, spark plasma sintering, sonochemical technique, microwave heating or hydrothermal route. Catalytic processes with the application of ferrite nanoparticles are included decomposition (in particular photocatalytic), reactions of dehydrogenation, oxidation, alkylation, CC coupling, removing organic/inorganic contaminants from aqueous solutions. As significant and remarkable advantages, ferrite nanocatalysts not only are environmentally benign and compatible with green chemistry aspects but also can be simply recovered from reaction systems and recycled up to several times almost without significant loss of their catalytic activity.

Transition Metal-Substituted Krebs-Type Polyoxometalate-Doped PEDOT Films

The transition metal-substituted Krebs-type polyoxometalates (POMs) [Sb₂W₂₀M₂O₇₀(H₂O)₆]^n-, M = Fe(III), Co(II), or Cu(II), were surface immobilized within the conducting polymer 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) on glassy carbon electrode surfaces. The immobilized films of different thicknesses were characterized by electrochemical and surface-based techniques. The inherent redox activity for the Krebs-type POMs, [Sb₂W₂₀M₂O₇₀(H₂O)₆]^n-, M = Fe(III), Co(II), or Cu(II), that were observed in the solution phase were maintained in the polymeric PEDOT matrix. The resulting films were found to be extremely stable toward redox switching between the various POM-based redox states. The films exhibited pH-dependent redox activity and thin layer behavior up to 100 mV s^-1. The films were found to be highly conductive through the employment of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Surface characterization of the films was carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy graph.

Multifunctional nanoparticles for genetic engineering and bioimaging of natural killer (NK) cell therapeutics

Recently, natural killer (NK)-based immunotherapy has attracted attention as a next-generation cell-based cancer treatment strategy due to its mild side effects and excellent therapeutic efficacy. Here, we describe multifunctional nanoparticles (MF-NPs) capable of genetically manipulating NK cells and tracking them in vivo through non-invasive magnetic resonance (MR) and fluorescence optical imaging. The MF-NPs were synthesized with a core-shell structure by conjugation of a cationic polymer labeled with a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent molecule, with the aid of a polydopamine (PDA) coating layer. When administered to NKs, the MF-NPs exhibited excellent cytocompatibility, efficiently delivered genetic materials into the immune cells, and induced target protein expression. In particular, the MF-NPs could induce the expression of EGFR targeting chimeric antigen receptors (EGFR-CARs) on the NK cell surface, which improved the cells' anti-cancer cytotoxic effect both in vitro and in vivo. Finally, when NK cells labeled with MF-NPs were injected into live mice, MF-NP-labeled NK cells could be successfully imaged using fluorescence and MR imaging devices. Our findings indicate that MF-NPs have great potential for application of NK cells, as well as other types of cell therapies involving genetic engineering and in vivo monitoring of cell trafficking.

Impedimetric aptasensor for the label-free and selective detection of Interleukin-6 for colorectal cancer screening

Despite the fact that cancer research has experienced important advances and remarkable improvement in the curing processes during the last decades, this disease still occupies a leading position among the causes of death worldwide. It has been demonstrated that there is an interconnection between the overexpression of interleukin-6 cytokine and the tumor growth, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance in several types of malignancies. Herein, a highly sensitive and selective aptasensor for quantitative detection of interleukin-6 was developed by using a glassy carbon electrode modified with p-aminobenzoic acid, p-aminothiophenol and gold nanoparticles. A thio-terminated aptamer specific for interleukin-6 was immobilized on the surface of the modified electrode via the formation of gold-sulfur bonds. This DNA oligonucleotide was then used as a detection probe to capture the target protein at the biosensor surface allowing label-free detection by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The developed aptasensor showed a good linear response from 5 pgmL^-1 to 100 ngmL^-1 with a detection limit of 1.6 pgmL^-1, within the range of physiological concentration of the protein. The biosensor exhibited high selectivity and has been successfully used to detect interleukin-6 in blood samples collected from patients suffering of colorectal cancer, with excellent recoveries after the addition of known amount of the target protein.

Magnetic nanocarriers: Evolution of spinel ferrites for medical applications

A valuable site-directed application in the field of nanomedicine is targeted drug delivery using magnetic metal oxide nanoparticles by applying an external magnetic field at the target tissue. The magnetic property of these structures allows controlling the orientation and location of particles by changing the direction of the applied external magnetic field. Pharmaceutical design and research in the field of nanotechnology offer novel solutions for diagnosis and therapies. This review summarizes magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic spinel ferrit's properties, remarkable approaches in magnetic liposomes, magnetic polymeric nanoparticles, MRI, hyperthermia and especially magnetic drug delivery systems, which have recently developed in the field of magnetic nanoparticles and their medicinal applications. Here, we discuss spinel ferrite (SF) as magnetic materials that are a significant class of composite metal oxides. They contain ferric ions and have the general structural formula M²⁺Fe₂³⁺O₄ (where M = Co,Ni,Zn,etc.). This structure indicates unique multifunctional properties, such as excellent magnetic characteristics, high specific surface area, surface active sites, high chemical stability, tuneable shape and size, and options for functionalization. The review assesses the current efforts on synthesis, properties and medical application of magnetic spinel ferrites nanoparticles based on cobalt, nickel and zinc. Based on this review, it can be concluded that MNPs and SFNPs have unlimited ability in biomedical applications. However, the practical application of SFNPs on a huge scale still needs to be considered and evaluated.

Recent Progress in the Development of Conducting Polymer-Based Nanocomposites for Electrochemical Biosensors Applications: A Mini-Review

Among various immobilizing materials, conductive polymer-based nanocomposites have been widely applied to fabricate the biosensors, because of their outstanding properties such as excellent electrocatalytic activity, high conductivity, and strong adsorptive ability compared to conventional conductive polymers. Electrochemical biosensors have played a significant role in delivering the diagnostic information and therapy monitoring in a rapid, simple, and low cost portable device. This paper reviews the recent developments in conductive polymer-based nanocomposites and their applications in electrochemical biosensors. The article starts with a general and concise comparison between the properties of conducting polymers and conducting polymer nanocomposites. Next, the current applications of conductive polymer-based nanocomposites of some important conducting polymers such as PANI, PPy, and PEDOT in enzymatic and nonenzymatic electrochemical biosensors are overviewed. This review article covers an 8-year period beginning in 2010.

A glassy carbon electrode modified with hollow cubic cuprous oxide for voltammetric sensing of L-cysteine

This paper reports on an electrochemical sensing system for L-cysteine. It is based on the use of hollow cubic Cu₂O particles that were prepared in two steps. First, the Cu₂O/ polystyrene (PS) composites were prepared by a surface ion exchange strategy for in-situ reductive deposition on the surface of carboxy-capped PS particles. Thereafter, the PS particles were removed from the Cu₂O/PS composites by treatment with tetrahydrofuran (THF). The resulting hollow cubic Cu₂O particles were placed in a Nafion matrix on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) which exhibits high surface area, good site accessibility and excellent electrocatalytic activity for L-cysteine. The cyclic voltammetric response of the modified GCE to L-cysteine is about 2.8-fold stronger than when using a GCE modified with pure Cu₂O. The detection limit for L-cysteine is lower by about 1 order of magnitude, and the working voltage is rather low (-0.08 V vs. Ag/AgCl). An excellent electrochemical selectivity for L-cysteine over other amino acids was also achieved. The method was successfully applied to the determination of L-cysteine in pharmaceutical samples.
