Monitoring contaminants of emerging concern from tertiary wastewater treatment plants using passive sampling modelled with performance reference compounds

The behavior of pharmaceutically active compounds and contrast agents during wastewater treatment - Combining sampling strategies and analytical techniques: A critical review

Increasing consumption of pharmaceuticals and the respective consequences for the aquatic environment have been the focus of many studies over the last thirty years. Various aspects in this field were investigated, considering diverse pharmaceutical groups and employing a wide range of research methodologies. Various questions from the perspectives of different research areas were devised and answered, resulting in a large mix of individual findings and conclusions. Collectively, the results of the studies offer a comprehensive overview. The large variety of methods and strategies, however, demands close attention when comparing and combining information from heterogeneous projects. This review critically examines the application of diverse sampling techniques as well as analytical methods in investigations concerning the behavior of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) and contrast agents (CAs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The combination of sampling and analysis is discussed with regard to its suitability for specific scientific problems. Different research focuses need different methods and answer different questions. An overview of studies dealing with the fate and degradation of PhACs and CAs in WWTPs is presented, discussing their strategic approaches and findings. This review includes surveys of anticancer drugs, antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs, antidiabetics, beta blockers, hormonal contraceptives, lipid lowering agents, antidepressants as well as contrast agents for X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging.

Fine-tuning inflow prediction models: integrating optimization algorithms and TRMM data for enhanced accuracy

This research explores machine learning algorithms for reservoir inflow prediction, including long short-term memory (LSTM), random forest (RF), and metaheuristic-optimized models. The impact of feature engineering techniques such as discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and XGBoost feature selection is investigated. LSTM shows promise, with LSTM-XGBoost exhibiting strong generalization from 179.81 m3/s RMSE (root mean square error) in training to 49.42 m3/s in testing. The RF-XGBoost and models incorporating DWT, like LSTM-DWT and RF-DWT, also perform well, underscoring the significance of feature engineering. Comparisons illustrate enhancements with DWT: LSTM and RF reduce training and testing RMSE substantially when using DWT. Metaheuristic models like MLP-ABC and LSSVR-PSO benefit from DWT as well, with the LSSVR-PSO-DWT model demonstrating excellent predictive accuracy, showing 133.97 m3/s RMSE in training and 47.08 m3/s RMSE in testing. This model synergistically combines LSSVR, PSO, and DWT, emerging as the top performers by effectively capturing intricate reservoir inflow patterns.

Association of fluoride exposure with disease burden and neurodevelopment outcomes in children in South Korea

BACKGROUND

Community water fluoridation is an effective public health strategy for preventing dental caries, yet. Concerns exist about potential health problems. This study explores associations between tap water fluoride levels and pediatric disease burden, as well as neurodevelopmental outcomes at 6 years of age.

METHODS

This nationwide population-based cohort study included children born in Korean cities with and without tap water fluoridation projects, between 2006 and 2012, aiming for a fluoride concentration of 0.8 ± 0.2 mg/L in treated tap water. Data from the National Health Insurance Service were used, spanning from birth to 2018. The relationship between exposure to fluoridated tap water and incidence of 16 childhood diseases that were previously identified as potentially linked to fluoride exposure were examined. Additionally, we evaluated the neurodevelopmental outcomes across various domains, including gross motor, fine motor, cognition, language, social skills, and self-help functions. These assessments were performed using data from a comprehensive national health screening program for children aged six years.

RESULTS

A fluoride-unexposed group included 22,881 children, whereas a fluoride-exposed group comprised 29,991 children (52% males). Children in the fluoride-exposed group had a decreased risk of dental caries and bone fractures [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval, CI), 0.76 (0.63-0.93) and 0.89 (0.82-0.93), respectively] and increased risk of hepatic failures [1.85, (1.14-2.98)] compared to those in the unexposed group. Additionally, the risk ratio of abnormal neurodevelopmental screening outcomes increased by 9%, but this was statistically uncertain (95% CI, 0.95-1.26).

CONCLUSIONS

Fluoridated tap water was associated with an increased risk of hepatic failure but a decreased risk of bone fractures in children. The association between fluoridated tap water and neurodevelopmental screening outcomes at 6 years remains unclear, highlighting the need for further studies to clarify this association.

Evaluation of phosphate insecticides and common herbicides: monitoring and risk assessment in water treatment plant, distribution networks, and underground water wells

Despite the negative effects that the use of pesticides (such as herbicides and insecticides) have on human health and water resources, a significant portion of the world's agricultural production depends on them. The purpose of this study was to determine selected residual concentrations of pesticides (diazinon, ethion, malathion, alachlor, methyl-parathion, trifluralin, atrazine, chlorpyrifos, and azinphos-methyl) in samples from Shiraz potable water sources. For this purpose, water treatment plant, groundwater wells, treated surface water, and a mixture of groundwater and treated surface water were taken. In addition, statistical and risk analyses (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) were used. According to the results, chlorpyrifos with 84.4% had the highest removal efficiency and methyl-parathion with 10% had the lowest removal rate in the Shiraz water treatment plant process. The highest mean concentration was related to azinphos-methyl (1.5 μg/L) and chlorpyrifos (0.59 μg/L) in the groundwater samples. All measured compounds in water source samples were below standard levels, except for chlorpyrifos and azinphos-methyl, which were reported in groundwater above the limit recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The results showed that while the selected pesticides measured had a low non-carcinogenic risk for both adults and children, malathion and trifluralin posed a high carcinogenic risk for adults.

Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage from buildings housing residents with different vulnerability levels

During the last three years, various restrictions have been set up to limit the transmission of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). While these rules apply at a large scale (e.g., country-wide level) human-to-human transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), occurs at a small scale. Different preventive policies and testing protocols were implemented in buildings where COVID-19 poses a threat (e.g., elderly residences) or constitutes a disruptive force (e.g., schools). In this study, we sampled sewage from different buildings (a school, a university campus, a university residence, and an elderly residence) that host residents of different levels of vulnerability. Our main goal was to assess the agreement between the SARS-CoV-2 concentration in wastewater and the policies applied in these buildings. All buildings were sampled using passive samplers while 24 h composite samples were also collected from the elderly residence. Results showed that passive samplers performed comparably well to composite samples while being cost-effective to keep track of COVID-19 prevalence. In the elderly residence, the comparison of sampling protocols (passive vs. active) combined with the strict clinical testing allowed us to compare the sensitivities of the two methods. Active sampling was more sensitive than passive sampling, as the former was able to detect a COVID-19 prevalence of 0.4 %, compared to a prevalence of 2.2 % for passive sampling. The number of COVID-19-positive individuals was tracked clinically in all the monitored buildings. More frequent detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater was observed in residential buildings than in non-residential buildings using passive samplers. In all buildings, sewage surveillance can be used to complement COVID-19 clinical testing regimes, as the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater remained positive even when no COVID-19-positive individuals were reported. Passive sampling is useful for building managers to adapt their COVID-19 mitigation policies.

Compounds of wastewater origin in remote upland lakes in Ireland

It is well established that persistent organic pollutants are transported long distances in the atmosphere and deposited into aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in remote areas, including high altitude lakes. The objective of this research was to evaluate whether compounds of wastewater origin were present in four remote upland headwater lakes in Ireland that primarily receive loadings from atmospheric deposition. Using Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) deployed in the lakes for 60 to 68 days, seven compounds were detected at levels that could be quantified but 25 of the target compounds were not detected. The detected compounds included the cannabinoid metabolite, tetrahydrocannabinol carboxylate (THC-COOH), codeine, acetaminophen (paracetamol), ibuprofen, and the artificial sweeteners, sucralose, and saccharin, which were all present at concentrations estimated to be < 125 ng/L. Caffeine was also present in the lakes at estimated concentrations between 213 and 1320 ng/L. Cocaine and tramadol were detected in POCIS deployed in some of the lakes, but at levels below the limits of quantitation. The highest concentrations of the target analytes were detected in two lakes located in the eastern part of Ireland. These data are consistent with regional atmospheric transport of these compounds originating from wastewater treatment plants in Ireland. However, contaminants from wastewater treatment plants in the United Kingdom may also be a source in these upland lakes that are located far from emissions of urban pollution.

Building-level wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 is associated with transmission and variant trends in a university setting

The University of South Carolina (UofSC) was among the first universities to include building-level wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 to complement clinical testing during its reopening in the Fall 2020 semester. In the Spring 2021 semester, 24h composite wastewater samples were collected twice per week from 10 residence halls and the on-campus student isolation and quarantine building. The isolation and quarantine building served as a positive control site. The wastewater was analyzed using RT-ddPCR for the quantification of nucleocapsid genes (N1 and N2) to identify viral transmission trends within residence halls. Log10 SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations were compared to both new clinical cases identified in the days following wastewater collection and recovered cases returning to sites during the days preceding sample collection to test temporal and spatial associations. There was a statistically significant positive relationship between the number of cases reported from the sites during the seven-day period following wastewater sampling and the log10 viral RNA copies/L (overall IRR 1.08 (1.02, 1.16) p-value 0.0126). Additionally, a statistically significant positive relationship was identified between the number of cases returning to the residence halls after completing isolation during the seven-day period preceding wastewater sampling and the log10 viral RNA copies/L (overall 1.09 (1.01, 1.17) p-value 0.0222). The statistical significance of both identified cases and recovered return cases on log10 viral RNA copies/L in wastewater indicates the importance of including both types of clinical data in wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) research. Genetic mutations associated with variants of concern (VOCs) were also monitored. The emergence of the Alpha variant on campus was identified, which contributed to the second wave of COVID-19 cases at UofSC. The study was able to identify sub-community transmission hotspots for targeted intervention in real-time, making WBE cost-effective and creating less of a burden on the general public compared to repeated individual testing methods.

A Review of In Situ Methods-Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT) and Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS) for the Collection and Concentration of Marine Biotoxins and Pharmaceuticals in Environmental Waters

Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT) and Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS) are in situ methods that have been applied to pre-concentrate a range of marine toxins, pesticides and pharmaceutical compounds that occur at low levels in marine and environmental waters. Recent research has identified the widespread distribution of biotoxins and pharmaceuticals in environmental waters (marine, brackish and freshwater) highlighting the need for the development of effective techniques to generate accurate quantitative water system profiles. In this manuscript, we reviewed in situ methods known as Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT) and Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS) for the collection and concentration of marine biotoxins, freshwater cyanotoxins and pharmaceuticals in environmental waters since the 1980s to present. Twelve different adsorption substrates in SPATT and 18 different sorbents in POCIS were reviewed for their ability to absorb a range of lipophilic and hydrophilic marine biotoxins, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, antibiotics and microcystins in marine water, freshwater and wastewater. This review suggests the gaps in reported studies, outlines future research possibilities and guides researchers who wish to work on water contaminates using Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT) and Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS) technologies.

Health risk of consuming Sphoeroides spp. from the Navachiste Lagoon complex due to its trace metals and organochlorine pesticides content

The Navachiste complex (NAV) is impacted by neighbored human activities and is located in the southwestern coastal zone of the Gulf of California. The study determines the trace metal (TM) and organochlorine pesticides (OCP) health risk content in the edible tissue of Sphoeroides spp. from NAV. The daily intakes (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were calculated. Twenty OCP and seven TM were detected. Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn were above MRLs. The γ‒Chlordane was the most frequent OCP. The highest average concentration was for α‒HCH, followed by γ‒chlordane. With the high ratios of γ‒HCH, p, p'‒ DDD and p, p'‒DDD, and the absence of p, p'‒ DDT, the higher ratios for dieldrin and endrin than for aldrin, α‒ chlordane, γ‒chlordane, heptachlor, and heptachlor epoxide indicates historical contamination. In contrast, the residual products of methoxychlor, endosulfan, and its isomers indicate endosulfan's recent use. The TM EDI, THQ > 1 (at 120 g day-1), and the ILCR (> 1 × 10-6) were above minimum levels, showing a high-risk potential for cancer development in the long term.

Calibration and field validation of POCIS passive samplers for tracking artificial sweeteners as indicators of municipal wastewater contamination in surface waters

Polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) are widely used to track contaminants in surface waters. However, POCIS have not been used previously to monitor for artificial sweeteners as an indicator of wastewater pollution. In this study, we report for the first time the POCIS sampling rates (Rs_cal) for four artificial sweetener compounds, acesulfame (0.001 L/day), sucralose (0.114 L/day), cyclamate (0.001 L/day), and saccharin (0.002 L/day). We also prepared a modified POCIS with Strata X-AW anion exchange resin as a sorbent (i.e., ax-POCIS) and determined the sampling rates for sucralose (0.060 L/day) and acesulfame (0.128 L/day). Rs_cal values were adjusted according to the rate of loss of the performance reference compound, metoprolol-d₆ from deployed POCIS to yield field sampling rates (i.e., Rs_field). Field validation of the monitoring method was conducted in Presqu'ile Bay on the north-central coast of Lake Ontario that is impacted by discharges from a sewage lagoon. POCIS were deployed at four sites within the bay and in the lagoon discharge. The four artificial sweeteners, as well as caffeine, ibuprofen, and other microcontaminants of sewage origin, were present throughout the bay at estimated concentrations in the ng/L range, and in the lagoon discharge at estimated concentrations higher by approximately one order of magnitude. Because acesulfame is present in ionic form over the pH range of natural waters, there are uncertainties related to the sampling rates using the standard POCIS. Sucralose is recommended as the best choice for source tracking using POCIS. There was good agreement between the concentrations of sucralose estimated from POCIS and the measured concentrations in grab samples of surface water in the bay. The present study provides key data for monitoring artificial sweeteners using POCIS.

Collateral implications of carbon and metal pollution on carbon dioxide emission at land-water interface of the Ganga River

Atmospheric CO₂ source and sink is among the most debated issues that have puzzled climate change geochemist for decades. Here, we tested whether heavy metal pollutants in river sediments favor preservation of organic matter through shielding microbial degradation. We measured CO₂ emission and extracellular enzyme activities at land-water interface (LWI) of 7 sites along a 285 km main stem of the Ganga River and 60 locations up- and downstream of two contrasting point sources discharging urban (Assi drain; Asdr) and industrial (Ramnagar drain; Rmdr) wastewaters to the river. We found the lowest CO₂ flux at Rmdr mouth characterized by the highest concentrations of Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cd. The fluxes were relatively higher at locations up- and downstream Rmdr. Substrate induced respiration (SIR), protease, FDAase, and β-D-glucosidase all showed a similar trend, but phenol oxidase and alkaline phosphatase showed opposite trend at the main river stem and Asdr. Sites rich in terrestrially derived organic matter have high phenol oxidase activity with low CO₂ emission. The CO₂ emission in the main river stem showed curvilinear relationships with total heavy metals (∑THM; R² = 0.68; p < 0.001) and TOC (R² = 0.65; p < 0.001). The dynamic fit model of main stem data showed that the ∑THM above 337.4 µg g^-1 were able to significantly decrease the activities of protease, FDAase, and β-D-glucosidase. The study has implications for understanding C-cycling in human-impacted river sediments where metal pollution shields microbial degradation consequently carbon and nutrient release and merits attention towards river management decisions.

Sources of microbial contamination in the watershed and coastal zone of Soufriere, St. Lucia

The Sustainable Development Goal 6 calls for global progress by 2030 in treating domestic wastewater and providing access to adequate sanitation facilities. However, meeting these goals will be a challenge for most Small Island Developing States, including Caribbean island nations. In the nearshore zone of the Soufriere region on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, there is a history of high levels of bacteria of fecal origin. Possible land-based sources of microbial contamination in the Soufriere Bay include discharges from the Soufriere River and transport of wastewater, including fecal material from the town of Soufriere. This area is an important tourist destination and supports a local fishery. To identify the sources of microbial contamination in Soufriere Bay, a range of monitoring methods were employed in this study. In grab samples of surface water collected from the Soufriere River, counts of total coliforms and Escherichia coli were elevated above water quality guidelines. However, the spikes in concentrations of these indicator organisms in the river did not necessarily coincide with the spikes in the levels of total coliforms and E. coli detected in samples collected on the same dates in Soufriere Bay, indicating that there are other sources of pollution in the Bay besides discharges from the river. Monitoring for chemical indicators of wastewater (i.e., caffeine, sucralose, fluconazole) in the Soufriere River indicated that there are inputs of sewage or human fecal material throughout the watershed. However, analysis of Bacteroidales 16S rRNA genetic markers for fecal bacteria originating from humans, bovine ruminants, or other warm-blooded animals indicated that the majority of microbial contamination in the river was not from humans. Monitoring for chemical indicators of wastewater using passive samplers deployed in Soufriere Bay indicated that there are two "hot spots" of contamination located offshore of economically depressed areas of the town of Soufriere. This study indicates that efforts to control contamination of Soufriere Bay by fecal microorganisms must include management of pollution originating from both sewage and domestic animals in the watershed.

Land-use history impacts spatial patterns and composition of woody plant species across a 35-hectare temperate forest plot

Land-use history is the template upon which contemporary plant and tree populations establish and interact with one another and exerts a legacy on the structure and dynamics of species assemblages and ecosystems. We use the first census (2010-2014) of a 35-ha forest-dynamics plot at the Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts to describe the composition and structure of the woody plants in this plot, assess their spatial associations within and among the dominant species using univariate and bivariate spatial point-pattern analysis, and examine the interactions between land-use history and ecological processes. The plot includes 108,632 live stems ≥ 1 cm in diameter (2,215 individuals/ha) and 7,595 standing dead stems ≥ 5 cm in diameter. Live tree basal area averaged 42.25 m²/ha, of which 84% was represented by Tsuga canadensis (14.0 m²/ ha), Quercus rubra (northern red oak; 9.6 m2/ ha), Acer rubrum (7.2 m²/ ha) and Pinus strobus (eastern white pine; 4.4 m²/ ha). These same four species also comprised 78% of the live aboveground biomass, which averaged 245.2 Mg/ ha. Across all species and size classes, the forest contains a preponderance (> 80,000) of small stems (<10-cm diameter) that exhibit a reverse-J size distribution. Significant spatial clustering of abundant overstory species was observed at all spatial scales examined. Spatial distributions of A. rubrum and Q. rubra showed negative intraspecific correlations in diameters up to at least a 150-m spatial lag, likely indicative of crowding effects in dense forest patches following intensive past land use. Bivariate marked point-pattern analysis, showed that T. canadensis and Q. rubra diameters were negatively associated with one another, indicating resource competition for light. Distribution and abundance of the common overstory species are predicted best by soil type, tree neighborhood effects, and two aspects of land-use history: when fields were abandoned in the late 19th century and the succeeding forest types recorded in 1908. In contrast, a history of intensive logging prior to 1950 and a damaging hurricane in 1938 appear to have had little effect on the distribution and abundance of present-day tree species. Our findings suggest that current day composition and structure are still being influenced by anthropogenic disturbances that occurred over a century ago.

Spatiotemporal trends and annual fluxes of pharmaceuticals in a Scottish priority catchment

Pharmaceuticals (a class of emerging contaminants) are continuously introduced into effluent-receiving surface waters due to their incomplete removal within wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This work investigated the presence and distribution of eight commonly used human pharmaceuticals in the River Dee (Scotland, UK), a Scottish Environment Protection Agency priority catchment that is a conservation site and important raw water source. Grab sampling and passive sampling (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler, POCIS) was performed over 12 months, targeting: paracetamol, ibuprofen, and diclofenac (analgesics/anti-inflammatories); clarithromycin and trimethoprim (antibiotics); carbamazepine and fluoxetine (psychoactive drugs); and 17α-ethynylestradiol (estrogen hormone). Sampling sites spanned from the river's rural source to the heavily urbanised estuary into the North Sea. Ibuprofen (ranging 0.8-697 ng/L), paracetamol (ranging 4-658 ng/L), trimethoprim (ranging 3-505 ng/L), diclofenac (ranging 2-324 ng/L) and carbamazepine (ranging 1-222 ng/L) were consistently detected at the highest concentrations through grab sampling, with concentrations generally increasing down river with increasing urbanisation. However, POCIS revealed trace contamination of most compounds throughout the river (commonly <0.5 ng/L), indicating pollution may be related to diffuse sources. Analysis of river flows revealed that low flow and warm seasons corresponded to statistically significantly higher concentrations of diclofenac and carbamazepine, two compounds of environmental and regulatory concern. Below the largest WWTP, annual average fluxes ranged 0.1 kg/yr (clarithromycin) to 143.8 kg/yr (paracetamol), with 226.2 kg/yr for total target compounds. It was estimated that this source contributed >70% of the total mass loads (dissolved phase) of the target compounds in the river. As the River Dee is an important raw water source and conservation site, additional catchment monitoring is warranted to safeguard water quality and assess environmental risk of emerging contaminants, particularly in relation to unusual weather patterns, climate change and population growth.

Simultaneous determination of pesticides from soils: a comparison between QuEChERS extraction and Dutch mini-Luke extraction methods

The expanding nature of the agricultural sector has fuelled the intensification of plant protection products usage, including pesticides. These pesticides may persist in soils, necessitating their accurate determination in a variety of soil types. However, due to their complex nature, the effective extraction of pesticide residues from soil matrices can present challenges to pesticide detection and quantification. This research compared two well-known extraction methods, QuEChERS and Dutch mini-Luke, by assessing their specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, precision and reproducibility in extracting seven distinct pesticides with a range of chemico-physical characteristics from Irish soils. The HPLC-UV conditions were optimised to separate the seven pesticides, and it was shown that both extraction methods successfully extracted neonicotinoids with recovery values ranging between 85 and 115%. Fluroxypyr and prothioconazole could not be efficiently extracted using QuEChERS, however, the recovery values of both the analytes ranged between 59 and 117% using Dutch mini-Luke. Furthermore, with the exception of prothioconazole using Dutch mini-Luke, both extraction methods resulted in reproducibility and precision values below or equal to 20%. Lastly, Dutch mini-Luke is noted to have a lower matrix effect than QuEChERS, except for prothioconazole. The comparison results showed that Dutch mini-Luke resulted in superior method sensitivity, better recovery, and lower matrix effect towards most investigated analytes and was the only extraction technique that successfully extracted all pesticides analysed in soil matrices.

Persistent pollution episodes, transport pathways, and potential sources of air pollution during the heating season of 2016-2017 in Lanzhou, China

As one of the most important industrial cities in Northwest China, Lanzhou currently suffers from serious air pollution. This study analyzed the formation mechanism and potential source areas of persistent air pollution in Lanzhou during the heating period from November 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017 based on the air pollutant concentrations and relevant meteorological data. Our findings indicate that particulate pollution was extremely severe during the study period. The daily PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ concentrations had significantly negative correlations with daily temperature, wind speed, maximum daily boundary layer height, while the daily PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ concentrations showed significantly positive correlations with daily relative humidity. Five persistent pollution episodes were identified and classified as either stagnant accumulation or explosive growth types according to the mechanism of pollution formation and evolution. The PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ concentrations and PM_2.5/PM₁₀ ratio followed a growing "saw-tooth cycle" pattern during the stagnant accumulation type event. Dust storms caused abrupt peaks in PM₁₀ and a sharp decrease in the PM_2.5/PM₁₀ ratio in explosive growth type events. The potential sources of PM₁₀ were mainly distributed in the Kumtag Desert in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Qaidam Basin and Hehuang Valley in Qinghai Province, and the western and eastern Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province. The contributions to PM₁₀ were more than 120 μg/m³. The important potential sources of PM_2.5 were located in Hehuang Valley in Qinghai and Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu; the concentrations of PM_2.5 were more than 60 μg/m³.

[Research progress on lyophilization for pretreatment of emerging organic contaminants in environmental samples]

有机新污染物是一类在先进分析技术帮助下新鉴定的、现有法规未管制的、人为源的有机污染物。有机新污染物主要包括药品与个人护理、农药、全氟化合物、内分泌干扰物等,其会产生内分泌干扰效应、诱发抗性基因传播,还对人类和野生生物的生存与发展构成潜在威胁,因此检测环境样品中的有机新污染物浓度对生态环境和人体健康具有重大意义。由于环境样品中的有机新污染物浓度较低,为了达到检测仪器的检测要求,通常需要对环境样品进行前处理,包括样品的净化和浓缩。冷冻干燥技术是一种在真空干燥条件下通过升华方式去除水分的前处理技术,主要包括样品冷冻、初级干燥和再干燥3个阶段,常用于食品和药品行业。在药品行业中,冷冻干燥技术能维持药品的生物活性和化学活性,保持药品的物理化学特性。近年来,冷冻干燥技术逐步用于环境水样中有机新污染物的前处理。其主要的操作步骤包括水样预处理、冷冻干燥、洗脱、吹干、过滤、定容和上机检测。冷冻干燥技术具有操作简单、低成本、样品处理体积少、样品易保存和处理过程中样品损失少等优点,具有广泛应用于环境样品中有机新污染物监测的潜力。该文综述了环境样品中有机新污染物常见的种类,并重点介绍冷冻干燥技术的原理及其在环境样品前处理过程中的应用,提出了冷冻干燥技术在环境分析中的应用前景,为环境样品中有机新污染物的监测提供了参考。

Grazing behaviour of tropical calanoid copepods and its effect on phytoplankton community structure

The Netravathi estuary is a micro- to mesotidal, tropical, shallow estuary with an abundant density of phytoplankton. The impact of the zooplankton grazing rate and the selected environmental variables on the phytoplankton community structure was studied seasonally from 2017 to 2019. Microplanktons of centric diatoms such as Skeletonema costatum and Cosinodiscus radiatus dominated during monsoon seasons, whereas dinoflagellates such as Peridinium sp. and Ceratium furca were observed in high numbers at the estuary during non-monsoon seasons. Water temperature showed a strong association with grazing rates of microzooplankton (r = 0.910). Canonical correspondence analysis studies established an intensification in grazing rate during non-monsoon seasons by calanoid copepods which in turn occasioned the reduction of microplanktons belonging to diatoms. Moreover, during monsoon seasons, diminution in grazing rates of calanoid copepods coupled with the presence of micro larvae as a secondary consumer of zooplankton resulted in the proliferation of centric diatoms. The grazing behaviour of microzooplankton affected the phytoplankton species diversity of the estuary in a negative manner (D = 0.29 in 2017 Pre-M, D = 0.76 in 2019 Pre-M). Selective grazing behaviour of calanoid copepods concerning temperature alteration exerted a strong influence in determining the phytoplankton community structure of the estuary to a great extent.

Extremely high concentrations of zinc in birch tree leaves collected in Chelyabinsk, Russia

Zinc is an essential trace element and a vital microelement for human health. Zinc can be toxic when exposures exceed physiological needs. Toxic effects in humans are most evident from inhalation exposure to high concentrations of Zn compounds. Urban air pollution can be especially dangerous due to the Zn content in airborne dust. Tree leaves can absorb significant levels of zinc. In this study, leaf deposition of Zn was investigated in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Russian zinc production plant and metallurgical plant are located in Chelyabinsk. Extremely high concentrations of Zn (316-4000 mg kg^-1) were found in the leaves of birch trees. It is well known that traffic also is Zn source in an urban environment. Trees, growing at the different distances from zinc production and metallurgical plants and road to identify the contribution of each source (road or industry), were studied. Through SEM analysis, the prevalence of small particulates (PM10 and less), containing Zn, illustrated leaf Zn deposition from the air by passing root accumulation. It was shown that emission of zinc production plant and the metallurgical plant is the main source of leaf Zn deposition in Chelyabinsk.

A critical review on various feedstocks as sustainable substrates for biosurfactants production: a way towards cleaner production

The quest for a chemical surfactant substitute has been fuelled by increased environmental awareness. The benefits that biosurfactants present like biodegradability, and biocompatibility over their chemical and synthetic counterparts has contributed immensely to their popularity and use in various industries such as petrochemicals, mining, metallurgy, agrochemicals, fertilizers, beverages, cosmetics, etc. With the growing demand for biosurfactants, researchers are looking for low-cost waste materials to use them as substrates, which will lower the manufacturing costs while providing waste management services as an add-on benefit. The use of low-cost substrates will significantly reduce the cost of producing biosurfactants. This paper discusses the use of various feedstocks in the production of biosurfactants, which not only reduces the cost of waste treatment but also provides an opportunity to profit from the sale of the biosurfactant. Furthermore, it includes state-of-the-art information about employing municipal solid waste as a sustainable feedstock for biosurfactant production, which has not been simultaneously covered in many published literatures on biosurfactant production from different feedstocks. It also addresses the myriad of other issues associated with the processing of biosurfactants, as well as the methods used to address these issues and perspectives, which will move society towards cleaner production.

Contamination of obsterics and gynecology hospital air by bacterial and fungal aerosols associated with nosocomial infections

Bacterial and fungal bioaerosols are a global concern due to nosocomial infections, especially in developing countries. Our study aimed to detect fungal and bacterial bioaerosols in different wards of an obstetrics and gynecology hospital air samples. 240 bioaerosol samples were collected by performing impaction method from different wards of a hospital in the central part of Iran, during two seasons. Fungi genera and bacteria species are recognized by cultivation. Concentrations of bacteria and fungi were ranged from 44 to 75 CFU/m3 and 8 to 22 CFU/m3, respectively. Labor Delivery and Recovery (LDR) and Emergency room had first and second most contaminated air among all the hospital wards. No significant difference between microbial load of wards which used natural ventilation and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system was observed. The microbial load was not affected significantly by temperature, working shift, and Inpatient Bed Occupancy Rate (IBOR). Fungal load related significantly with relative humidity. Staphylococcus aureus (detected in 48.3% of samples) and Penicillium (27%) were the most predominant isolated bacteria and fungi, respectively. The results revealed that the level of bacteria and fungi responsible for nosocomial infections in the air of this hospital is very low. Although levels of microbial contamination are relatively low, it is important to investigate the effect of bioaerosols on nosocomial infections, especially in neonates.

Pharmaceuticals in source waters of 95 First Nations in Canada

OBJECTIVES

Pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants in the environment. Little has been published about the presence of pharmaceuticals in waterbodies nearby or on reserve land of First Nations in Canada. The objectives of this study were to (1) quantify the level of pharmaceuticals in First Nations' surface waters, (2) calculate the human health risks of the mixtures found, and (3) measure the exposure to pharmaceuticals in First Nations' drinking water where source water was highly contaminated.

METHODS

This participatory study measured the levels of 43 pharmaceuticals from surface water samples taken at three water sampling sites chosen by the 95 participating First Nations. The sites were in proximity to recreational areas, fishing areas, drinking water sources, and/or wastewater outflows. When elevated levels of pharmaceutical mixtures were found in samples, drinking water samples were obtained and analyzed for potential pharmaceuticals. Human health risks were calculated by an established protocol.

RESULTS

In total, 432 samples were collected at 302 water sampling sites (285 surface water, 11 drinking water, and 6 wastewater sites). Quantifiable levels of 35 pharmaceuticals were found in 79 of the 95 (83%) participating First Nations at 193 of the 285 surface water sites (68%). Overall, the levels found were comparable to or lower than those found in other studies in Canada and worldwide.

CONCLUSION

In almost all participating First Nations, there is no human health risk from consuming surface water for drinking. However, surface water in the vicinity of major urban centres should not be used as secondary untreated water sources due to the elevated human health risk associated with exposure to the mixtures of multiple pharmaceuticals detected.

Assessment of emerging polar organic pollutants linked to contaminant pathways within an urban estuary using non-targeted analysis

A comprehensive, non-targeted analysis of polar organic pollutants using high resolution/accurate mass (HR/AM) mass spectrometry approaches has been applied to water samples from San Francisco (SF) Bay, a major urban estuary on the western coast of the United States, to assess occurrence of emerging contaminants and inform future monitoring and management activities. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) were deployed selectively to evaluate the influence of three contaminant pathways: urban stormwater runoff (San Leandro Bay), wastewater effluent (Coyote Creek, Lower South Bay), and agricultural runoff (Napa River). Grab samples were collected before and after deployment of the passive samplers to provide a quantitative snapshot of contaminants for comparison. Composite samples of wastewater effluent (24 hours) were also collected from several wastewater dischargers. Samples were analyzed using liquid-chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry. Resulting data were analyzed using a customized workflow designed for high-fidelity detection, prioritization, identification, and semi-quantitation of detected molecular features. Approximately 6350 compounds were detected in the combined data set, with 424 of those compounds tentatively identified through high quality spectral library match scores. Compounds identified included ethoxylated surfactants, pesticide and pharmaceutical transformation products, polymer additives, and rubber vulcanization agents. Compounds identified in samples were reflective of the apparent sources and pathways of organic pollutant inputs, with stormwater-influenced samples dominated by additive chemicals likely derived from plastics and vehicle tires, as well as ethoxylated surfactants.

Evaluation of a recirculating hydroponic bed bioreactor for removal of contaminants of emerging concern from tertiary-treated wastewater effluent

Tertiary-treated effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Tucson, AZ, was added to recirculating hydroponic bed bioreactors filled with light expanded clay aggregate (LECA) and recirculated for 10 days. Bioreactors were planted with high and low densities of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) and Bacillus thuringiensis cotton (Gossypium sp.). The experiment also included a non-planted bioreactor treatment and a control bioreactor with neither plants nor substrate medium. Of 46 contaminants of emerging conern assayed with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), 16 were initially identified at detectable levels in the effluent. After one day, concentrations of Ibuprofen and Diphenhydramine fell below detection limits in all treatments as well as the control. After five days, initial concentrations of atenolol, benzotriazole, carbamazepine, hydrochlorothiazide, iohexol, iopamidol iopromide, primidone, sulfamethoxazole and tris TCPP were reduced by greater than 80% in all treatments, while the control exhibited little to no removal. Diclofenac, simazine and sucralose exhibited variable removal rates among treatments ranging from 44 to 84% after five days. After 10 days, concentrations of DEET, diclofenac, iopromide, primidone and simazine were all below detection levels, while there was near zero removal in the control. Bioreactors planted with cotton had significantly more removal of sulfamethoxazole than unplanted bioreactors by 16-19% after five days and by an additional 18-20% removal after 10 days. The percentage uptake of benzotriazole by every planted treatment was significantly higher than the non-planted treatment after five and 10 days. Significant contaminant removal occurred in the media substrate, likely through adsorption to LECA or microbial degradation. More research is needed to examine specific pathways of degradation and removal by various microbials and plants.

Contamination and oxidative stress biomarkers in estuarine fish following a mine tailing disaster

BACKGROUND

The Rio Doce estuary, in Brazil, was impacted by the deposition of iron mine tailings, caused by the collapse of a dam in 2015. Based on published baseline datasets, the estuary has been experiencing chronic trace metal contamination effects since 2017, with potential bioaccumulation in fishes and human health risks. As metal and metalloid concentrations in aquatic ecosystems pose severe threats to the aquatic biota, we hypothesized that the trace metals in estuarine sediments nearly two years after the disaster would lead to bioaccumulation in demersal fishes and result in the biosynthesis of metal-responsive proteins.

METHODS

We measured As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Se and Zn concentrations in sediment samples in August 2017 and compared to published baseline levels. Also, trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, Se and Zn) and protein (metallothionein and reduced glutathione) concentrations were quantified in the liver and muscle tissues of five fish species (Cathorops spixii, Genidens genidens, Eugerres brasilianus, Diapterus rhombeus and Mugil sp.) from the estuary, commonly used as food sources by local populations.

RESULTS

Our results revealed high trace metal concentrations in estuarine sediments, when compared to published baseline values for the same estuary. The demersal fish species C. spixii and G. genidens had the highest concentrations of As, Cr, Mn, Hg, and Se in both, hepatic and muscle, tissues. Trace metal bioaccumulation in fish was correlated with the biosynthesis of metallothionein and reduced glutathione in both, liver and muscle, tissues, suggesting active physiological responses to contamination sources. The trace metal concentrations determined in fish tissues were also present in the estuarine sediments at the time of this study. Some elements had concentrations above the maximum permissible limits for human consumption in fish muscles (e.g., As, Cr, Mn, Se and Zn), suggesting potential human health risks that require further studies. Our study supports the high biogeochemical mobility of toxic elements between sediments and the bottom-dwelling biota in estuarine ecosystems.

The performance of emerging materials derived from waste organism blood and saponified modified orange peel for immobilization of available Cd in soil

Waste organism blood (WOB) and orange peel are emerging stabilization materials obtained as by-products from agricultural processes, which are quite suitable for heavy metal immobilization in soil. In this work, waste organism blood and chemically modified orange peel (SOP) were investigated as potential sorbents for immobilization of available Cd in soil. Application of 5% WOB and SOP effectively immobilized cadmium (Cd) with an associated regulation of soil pH, among which the pH of acidic soil increased most significantly. While the application of 3% SOP alone stabilized almost the same amount of available Cd compared to WOB, it caused the highest stabilization rate of 58.85% when applied at 5%. By contrast, SOP combined with WOB (the mass ratio of the material is 1 : 1) at a 5% addition rate stabilized the available Cd in soils remarkably, with a stabilization rate of 57.74%. This study revealed that the soil particles after stabilization have a more compact and flaky structure, and the SOP and WOB had a particular pore structure, which was helpful for the adsorption of available Cd in soil. This study put forward new insights into the potential effects of Cd immobilization in contaminated soil by newly emerging stabilization biomass materials (WOB and SOP).

Assessment of water quality compartments in Kor River, IRAN

A comprehensive risk assessment tool may have advantages for investigating complex water quality data and for a better understanding of the ecological status of the studied systems including aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, the impact of agricultural, industrial, and domestic sources on the quality of the Kor River in Fars Province, Iran are investigated. The study developed a procedure consists of pollution index (P_i), water quality index (WQI), and data grouping as a useful simple tool to assist water quality management. The pollution indicators used in the development of P_i and WQI are 15 physical, chemical, and biological variables in the river water. According to the world guideline standards, an appropriate weight is assigned to each indicator, scores of P_i are determined, a composite WQI is formulated, and a water quality grouping score is proposed. Pollution risk levels along the river are highlighted using the grouping score and dominant pollution sources are determined. Results revealed that pollution sources influence the water quality indicator content so that some sites are under the high influence of sewage disposal and industrial effluents and some others under the influence of agricultural runoff. Results also provide insight into the development of better pollution control strategies for the Kor River and other aquatic ecosystems affected by industrial, agricultural, and domestic pollution sources.

Groundwater pollution source apportionment using principal component analysis in a multiple land-use area in southwestern China

Identification of different pollution sources in groundwater is challenging, especially in areas with diverse land uses and receiving multiple inputs. In this study, principal component analysis (PCA) was combined with geographic information system (GIS) to explore the spatial and temporal variation of groundwater quality and to identify the sources of pollution and main factors governing the quality of groundwater in a multiple land-use area in southwestern China. Groundwater samples collected from 26 wells in 2012 and 38 wells in 2018 were analyzed for 13 water quality parameters. The PCA results showed that the hydro-geochemical process was the predominant factor determining groundwater quality, followed by agricultural activities, domestic sewage discharges, and industrial sewage discharges. Agriculture expansion from 2012 to 2018 resulted in increased apportionment of agricultural pollution. In contrast, economic restructure and infrastructure improvement reduced the contributions of domestic sewage and industrial pollution. Anthropogenic activities were found the major causes of elevated nitrogen concentrations (NO₃^-, NO₂^-, NH₄⁺) in groundwater, highlighting the necessity of controlling N sources through effective fertilizer managements in agricultural areas and reducing sewage discharges in urban areas. The applications of GIS and PCA successfully identified the sources of pollutants and major factors driving the variations of groundwater quality in tested years.

Pesticides in Surface Waters in Argentina Monitored Using Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers

Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) were deployed in two watersheds in Córdoba province and one watershed in Buenos Aires province in Argentina. The fungicides, tebuconazole, carbendazim and azoxystrobin, and the herbicides, atrazine, dicamba and 2,4-D were detected in POCIS deployed in each of the three watersheds. Estimated time weighted average concentrations of atrazine were greater than 2 µg/L at the outflow of Brava Lake in Buenos Aires province, and this concentration exceeds the Canadian water quality guideline for protection of aquatic life. The concentrations of all other pesticides were less than 400 ng/L. The distribution of pesticides detected in surface waters indicated that the sources were runoff from agricultural and urban lands and discharges from wastewater treatment plants.

Short-term stability assessment for the analysis of emerging contaminants in seawater

This paper describes the stability study performed in seawater and seawater extracts (spiked at ~ 200 ng/L) for 23 emerging contaminants. Four different alternatives were tested at six different times (0, 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 days): (i) seawater at 4 °C, (ii) mixed-mode solid-phase extraction cartridge (Bond Elute Plexa and Strata X-AW) stored at - 20 °C, (iii) polyethersulfone hollow fibre stored at - 20 °C and (iv) methanol extracts once the samples were extracted from PES hollow fibre and stored at - 20 °C. Moreover, the integrity of the supporting polymeric phases was studied by Raman, optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetric and thermogravimetric analysis. As may be expected, seawater samples showed the lowest stability (losses between 21 and 99%) while methanol extract provides stable results (losses < 30%) over the tested period. In the case of solid-phase cartridges, the stability profile showed an average loss of 7% while, in polyethersulfone hollow fibres, losses up to 58% were observed. Finally, we were able to relate the lower efficiency of polyethersulfone fibres with the wettability of this material based on the thermogravimetric analysis.

Heavy metals concentration and human health risk assessment in seven commercial fish species from Asafo Market, Ghana

Health risk assessment and heavy metal accumulation were evaluated in the muscles of widely consumed Trachurus trachurus, Lutjanus fulgens, Lutjanus goreensis, Acanthocybium solandri, Pagellus bellottii, Scomber colias and Dentex congoensis fish species in Asafo, Ghana. The fish samples were prepared using a wet digestion method and the heavy metals analysis was performed with the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (UNICAM 969). The results revealed that Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb concentrations were below the permissible values set by several health institutions. The health risk assessment based on non-carcinogenic and cancer factors effect indicates no adverse health effect of fish intake. The results of heavy metal concentrations showed that different varieties of fish could be safe for human intake and the results are anticipated to create alertness among the local people.

Neonicotinoid pesticides in drinking water in agricultural regions of southern Ontario, Canada

Because of the persistence and solubility of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs), there is concern that these compounds may contaminate sources of drinking water. The objective of this project was to evaluate the distribution of NNIs in raw and treated drinking water from selected municipalities that draw their water from the lower Great Lakes in areas of southern Ontario, Canada where there is high intensity agriculture. Sites were monitored using Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) and by collecting grab samples at six drinking water treatment plants. Thiamethoxam, clothianidin and imidacloprid were detected in both POCIS and grab samples of raw water. The frequency of detection of NNIs was much lower in treated drinking water, but some compounds were still detected at estimated concentrations in the low ng L^-1 range. Thiamethoxam was detected in one grab sample of raw drinking water at a mean concentration of 0.28 μg L^-1, which is above the guidelines for drinking water recommended in some jurisdictions, including the European Union directive on pesticide levels <0.1 μg L^-1 in water intended for human consumption. Further work is required to determine whether contamination of sources of drinking water with this class of insecticides is a global problem in agricultural regions.

Removal of ciprofloxacin from seawater by reverse osmosis

Much of the deterioration of water resources is anthropogenically caused as a consequence of the incessant production of chemical compounds to obtain the quality of life that society demands today. This constant presence and harmful accumulation of these pollutants in different ecosystems have seen them emerge as a major concern both for human health and for environmental safety. Scientific advances have succeeded in legislating against, reducing and even eliminating priority pollutants, while new technologies are being constantly developed to identify and treat newly emerging pollutants. The objective of this work is the evaluation of the seawater reverse osmosis membrane as a method for the removal of an antibiotic present in seawater. The novelty of the study is that the tests were undertaken using water of high ionic strength. A critical selection of the antibiotic to be used in the study was carried out. The experiments were performed under constant pressure conditions, employing synthetic seawater in a pilot-scale unit with a commercial spiral-wound reverse osmosis membrane. Results are shown in terms of selectivity of the reverse osmosis process for antibiotic removal. The RO membrane element successfully reject most of the ciprofloxacin (removal rate >90%), with maximum rejection value of 99.96%.

Metabolic Costs of Exposure to Wastewater Effluent Lead to Compensatory Adjustments in Respiratory Physiology in Bluegill Sunfish

Municipal wastewater effluent is a major source of aquatic pollution and has potential to impact cellular energy metabolism. However, it is poorly understood whether wastewater exposure impacts whole-animal metabolism and whether this can be accommodated with adjustments in respiratory physiology. We caged bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) for 21 days at two sites downstream (either 50 or 830 m) from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Survival was reduced in fish caged at both downstream sites compared to an uncontaminated reference site. Standard rates of O₂ consumption increased in fish at contaminated sites, reflecting a metabolic cost of wastewater exposure. Several physiological adjustments accompanied this metabolic cost, including an expansion of the gill surface area available for gas exchange (reduced interlamellar cell mass), a decreased blood-O₂ affinity (which likely facilitates O₂ unloading at respiring tissues), increased respiratory capacities for oxidative phosphorylation in isolated liver mitochondria (supported by increased succinate dehydrogenase, but not citrate synthase, activity), and decreased mitochondrial emission of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We conclude that exposure to wastewater effluent invokes a metabolic cost that leads to compensatory respiratory improvements in O₂ uptake, delivery, and utilization.
