The role of visible light active TiO2 specimens on the solar photocatalytic disinfection of E. coli

Effect of humic acid on visible light photocatalytic inactivation of bacteriophage f2 with electrospinning Cu-TiO2 nanofibers: insight into the mechanisms

Photocatalytic disinfection is a promising technology with low cost and high efficiency. However, most of the current studies on photocatalytic disinfection ignore the widespread presence of natural organic matter (NOM) in water bodies, so the incomplete conclusions obtained may not be applicable. Herein, this paper systematically studied the influence of humic acid (HA), one of the most important components of NOM, on the photocatalytic inactivation of bacteriophage f2 with electrospinning Cu-TiO2 nanofibers. We found that with the addition of HA, the light transmittance of the solution at 550 nm decreased from 94 to 60%, and the band gap of the photocatalyst was increased from 2.96 to 3.05 eV. Compared with reacting without HA, the degradation amount of RNA of f2 decreased by 88.7% after HA was added, and the RNA concentration increased from 1.95 to 4.38 ng·μL-1 after the reaction. Hence, we propose mechanisms of the effect of HA on photocatalytic disinfection: photo-shielding, passivation of photocatalysts, quenching of free radicals, and virus protection. Photo-shielding and photocatalyst passivation lead to the decrease of photocatalyst activity, and the reactive oxygen species (ROSs) (·OH, ·O2-, 1O2, H2O2) are further trapped by HA. The HA in water also can protect the shape of phage f2 and reduce the leakage of protein and the destruction of ribonucleic acid (RNA). This work provides an insight into the mechanisms for the influence of HA in photocatalytic disinfection process and a theoretical basis for its practical application.

Removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes by nanoscale zero-valent iron activated persulfate: Implication for the contribution of pH decrease

The mechanism of removing antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) by persulfate was attributed to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the potential contribution of decreased pH in persulfate system to ARB and ARGs removal has rarely been reported. Here, the efficiency and mechanism of removing ARB and ARGs by nanoscale zero-valent iron activated persulfate (nZVI/PS) were investigated. Results showed that the ARB (2 × 10⁸ CFU/mL) could be completely inactivated within 5 min, and the removal efficiencies of sul1 and intI1 were 98.95% and 99.64% by nZVI/20 mM PS, respectively. Investigation of mechanism revealed that hydroxyl radicals was the dominant ROS of nZVI/PS in removing ARB and ARGs. Importantly, the pH of nZVI/PS system was greatly decreased, even to 2.9 in nZVI/20 mM PS system. Impressively, when the pH of the bacterial suspension was adjusted to 2.9, the removal efficiency of ARB, sul1 and intI1 were 60.33%, 73.76% and 71.51% within 30 min, respectively. Further excitation-emission-matrix analysis confirmed that decreased pH contributed to ARB damage. The above results on the effect of pH indicated that the decreased pH of nZVI/PS system also made an important contribution for the removal of ARB and ARGs.

Preparation and modification methods of defective titanium dioxide-based nanoparticles for photocatalytic wastewater treatment-a comprehensive review

The rapid population growth and industrial expansion worldwide have created serious water contamination concerns. To curb the pollution issue, it has become imperative to use a versatile material for the treatment. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been recognized as the most-studied nanoparticle in various fields of science and engineering due to its availability, low cost, efficiency, and other fascinating properties with a wide range of applications in modern technology. Recent studies revealed the photocatalytic activity of the material for the treatment of industrial effluents to promote environmental sustainability. With the wide band gap energy of 3.2 eV, TiO₂ can be activated under UV light; thus, many strategies have been proposed to extend its photoabsorption to the visible light region. In what follows, this has generated increasing attention to study its characteristics and structural modifications in different forms for photocatalytic applications. The present review provides an insight into the understanding of the synthesis methods of TiO₂, the current progress in the treatment techniques for the degradation of wide environmental pollutants employing modified TiO₂ nanoparticles, and the factors affecting its photocatalytic activities. Further, recent developments in using titania for practical applications, the approach for designing novel nanomaterials, and the prospects and opportunities in this exciting area have been discussed.

Thermal modeling, characterization, and enviro-economic investigations on inclined felt sheet solar distiller for seawater desalination

Sustainable desalination can be achieved by adopting renewable energy-based low-cost and low-impact desalting techniques. In this investigation, capability of inclined felt sheet solar distiller in desalting seawater is assessed by evaluating its performance, distillate water quality, economics, and environmental impacts. The distiller with 1.18-m² aperture area produced around 4.60 L/day of distillate for a cumulative incident solar radiation intensity of about 20.52 MJ/m² day. Its pollutant removal efficiency is very much superior to other available solar stills reported in literatures. Thermal model developed for estimating distiller's performance is able to predict its productivity with reasonable accuracy (only 8.0% deviation from experimental values) and was used for estimating distiller's performance in various seashore locations in India with varying clear days (191 to 246). Yearly mean distillate production and thermal and exergy efficiencies of the proposed distiller range between 3.60 to 4.50 L/day, 36.45 to 42.39%, and 2.85 to 3.65%, respectively, in east seashore locations of India. Moreover, 18.46 tons of CO₂, 132.72 kg of SO₂, and 54.20 kg of NO emission can be mitigated by adopting the distiller for potable water production. Distillate production cost of inclined felt sheet solar distiller is in the range of 1.15 to 2.29 INR/L and highly depends on the interest rate at which the distiller is financed. Generation of reasonable quantity of high-quality potable water at low cost with huge environmental benefits makes proposed inclined felt sheet solar distiller a suitable option for quenching thirst in coastal and remote locations.

Solar disinfection (SODIS) technologies as alternative for large-scale public drinking water supply: Advances and challenges

Gastrointestinal waterborne diseases, continue to stand out among the most lethal diseases in developing countries, because of consuming contaminated water taken from unsafe sources. Advances made in recent decades in methods of solar water disinfection (SODIS) have shown that SODIS is an effective and inexpensive method of providing drinking water, capable of substantially reducing the prevalence and mortality of waterborne diseases. The increased impact of SODIS in communities lacking drinking water services depends on a successful upgrade from conventional SODIS (based on PET bottle reactors) in high flow continuous flow systems for solar water disinfection (CFSSWD). This review aimed to identify the main limitations of conventional SODIS that hinder its application as a large-scale drinking water supply strategy, and to propose ways to overcome these limitations (without making it economically inaccessible) based on the current frontier of advances technological. It was found that the successful development of the CFSSWD depends on overcoming the current limitations of conventional SODIS and the development of systems whose configurations allow combining the properties of solar pasteurization (SOPAS) and SODIS. Different improvements need to be made to the main components of the CFSSWD, such as increasing the performance of solar radiation collectors, photo and thermal reactors and heat exchangers. The integration of disinfection technologies based on photocatalytic and photothermal nanomaterials also needs to be achieved. The performance evaluation of the CFSSWD should be made considering resistant microorganisms, such as the environmental resistance structures of bacteria or protozoa (spores or (oo)cysts) as targets of disinfection approaches.

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic disinfection of raw surface waters (300-5000 CFU/mL) using reusable coated Ru/WO3/ZrO2

We selected ruthenium (Ru) to improve the photocatalytic activity of a WO₃/ZrO₂ composite. The synthesized Ru/WO₃/ZrO₂ was then compared to a benchmark photocatalyst (S-TiO₂) in terms of photocatalytic disinfection of raw surface waters collected from the Nile Delta region, Egypt. The photocatalysts were immobilized on aluminum plates with polysiloxane to test them in repetitive cycles under the irradiation of a metal-halide lamp. Bacterial concentrations in the raw waters ranged from 300 to 5000 CFU/mL (CFU: colony-forming units) and different species and genus were detected including gram-negative (e.g., shigella, salmonella, vibrio parahaemolyticus, and vibrio cholera) and gram-positive bacteria (e.g., enterococcus). Ru/WO₃/ZrO₂ deactivated over 90 % of the bacterial content within 120 min for most sources, whereas S-TiO₂ did not perform as highly. The bacterial count after 240 min of irradiation was below the detection limit for all different water sources. Moreover, the inhabitation of photocatalytic disinfection by natural organic matter (NOM) was investigated. Ru/WO₃/ZrO₂ was stable for four continuous cycles (960 min in total), suggesting the viability for practical application.

Thermal-Sprayed Photocatalytic Coatings for Biocidal Applications: A Review

There have been ever-growing demands for disinfection of water and air in recent years. Efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective methods of disinfection for pathogens are vital to the health of human beings. The photocatalysis route has attracted worldwide attention due to its highly efficient oxidative capabilities and sustainable recycling, which can be used to realize the disinfection purposes without secondary pollution. Though many studies have comprehensively reviewed the work about photocatalytic disinfection, including design and fabrication of photocatalytic coatings, inactivation mechanisms, or practical applications, systematic reviews about the disinfection photocatalysis coatings from fabrication to effort for practical use are still rare. Among different ways of fabricating photocatalytic materials, thermal spray is a versatile surface coating technique and competitive in constructing large-scale functional coatings, which is a most promising way for the future environmental purification, biomedical and life health applications. In this review, we briefly introduced various photocatalytic materials and corresponding inactivation mechanisms for virus, bacteria and fungus. We summarized the thermal-sprayed photocatalysts and their antimicrobial performances. Finally, we discussed the future perspectives of the photocatalytic disinfection coatings for potential applications. This review would shed light on the development and implementation of sustainable disinfection strategies that is applicable for extensive use for controlling pathogens in the near future.

Photocatalytic degradation of organic micropollutants: Inhibition mechanisms by different fractions of natural organic matter

Natural organic matter (NOM) can inhibit the photocatalytic degradation of organic micropollutants (OMPs) through inner filter effect, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and competitive adsorption. However, previous studies have focused solely on the bulk properties of NOM and our understanding of the inhibition mechanism by NOM fractions during photocatalytic degradation of OMP is still fragmentary. In this study, five well-characterized different NOM samples (i.e., secondary treated wastewater, river water, and three standard NOM surrogates) were used to elucidate the inhibition mechanisms during photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine (a model OMP) using TiO₂ and its composites with carbon nanotubes (CNT-TiO₂) under UVC and solar-light irradiation. The results indicated that terrestrially derived NOM with high aromaticity, a low oxygen/carbon atom ratio, and large molecular weight is the major fraction that participates in ROS scavenging, competitive adsorption, and inner filter effect. Furthermore, the modeling analysis suggested that inner filter effect due to NOM and ROS scavenging was the most influential inhibitory mechanism. In the case of secondary treated wastewater, the presence of high concentrations of inorganic species (e.g., PO₄^3-, Cl^-, and NO₃^-) together with NOM significantly reduced the photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine. Overall, the methods and the results of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of NOM fractions on photocatalysis and highlight the need to further consider the interplay between NOM and background inorganic constituents in photocatalytic degradation of OMP.

A comprehensive review on the use of second generation TiO2 photocatalysts: Microorganism inactivation

Photocatalytic disinfection practices have been applied for decades and attract current interest along with the developments in synthesis of novel photocatalysts. A survey based investigation was performed for elucidation of photocatalytic treatment details as well as disinfection mechanism of microorganisms. The present work brings significant information on the utilization of second generation TiO₂ photocatalysts for inactivation of microorganisms typically using E. coli as the model microorganism. Special interest was devoted to the role of organic matrix either generated during treatment or as a natural component. Studies on photocatalytic disinfection were extensively reviewed and evaluated with respect to basic operational parameters related to photocatalysis, and types and properties of microorganisms investigated. Degradation mechanism and behavior of microorganisms towards reactive oxygen species during disinfection and organic matrix effects were also addressed. For successful utilization and effective assessment of visible light active photocatalysts, standard protocols for disinfection activity testing have to be set. Further improvement of the efficiency of these materials would be promising for future applications in water treatment processes.
