Investigation of a modified metal-organic framework UiO-66 with nanoscale zero-valent iron for removal of uranium (VI) from aqueous solution

Fabrication of granular three-dimensional graphene oxide/UiO-66 adsorbent for high uranium adsorption: Density functional theory and fixed bed column studies

This study presents a thorough investigation of the novel application of graphene oxide (GO) modified with melamine formaldehyde to fabricate granular three-dimensional GO (3D-GO), followed by the introduction of UiO-66 doping (3D-GO/U) for high uranium (U) adsorption. The U(VI) adsorption isotherms revealed that 3D-GO/U-10 with 10 % UiO-66 incorporation exhibited an impressive adsorption capacity of 375.5 mg g-1 and remained high U(VI) sorption performance in wide pH range. The introduction of UiO-66 to 3D-GO (3D-GO/U-10) led to the deagglomeration of the UiO-66 particles. The in situ surface-enhanced-Raman-spectroscopy-analysis and density-functional-theory simulations showed the symmetric metal center site Zr-O2 on UiO-66 was discovered to exhibit the highest adsorption energy (-3.21 eV) for U(VI) species due to the electrons transfer from the oxygen atom to U(VI) drives the covalent bonding between the symmetric metal center sites Zr-O2 and U(VI) on 3D-GO/U-10. The 3D-GO/U-10 was regenerated using a 0.1 M Na2CO3/0.01 M H2O2 solution and achieved up to 89.7 % U(VI) removal in the 5th cycle. The continuous flow column experiments results revealed 3D-GO/U-10 can regenerate and maintain a U(VI) removal capacity of ∼76 % for up to 4 cycles column experiments. Therefore, 3D-GO/U-10 exhibits great potential for removing U(VI) from water bodies.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Thermal Emitter for High-Performance Passive Radiative Cooling

Passive radiative cooling represents a transformative approach to achieving sustainable cooling on Earth without relying on energy consumption. In this research, the optical characteristics of five readily accessible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): ZIF-67(Co), MOF-74(Ni), HKUST-1(Cu), MOF-801(Zr), and UiO-66(Zr) are meticulously explored. The objective is to identify the pivotal factors that influence their ability to facilitate radiative cooling. Through an in-depth analysis encompassing spectroscopic features, surface texture, and porosity, it is found that the MOFs' cooling efficacy is largely influenced by their optical bandgaps and functional groups, although other factors like chemical composition and structural characteristics remain to be considered. Notably, UiO-66(Zr) emerged as the standout performer, boasting an impressive solar reflectance of 91% and a mid-infrared emissivity of 96.8%. Remarkably, a fabric treated with UiO-66(Zr) achieved a substantial sub-ambient cooling effect, lowering temperatures by up to 5 °C and delivering a cooling power of 26 W m-2 at 300 K. The findings underscore the vast potential of MOFs in offering new opportunities to advance passive radiative cooling technologies, paving the way for their extensive application in this field.

Collaborative adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of high concentration pharmaceutical pollutants in water using a novel dendritic fibrous nano-silica modified with chitosan and UiO-66

This study presents a novel hybrid mesoporous material for degrading drug pollutants in water. The hybrid materials, derived from UiO-66 metal-organic framework and chitosan, coated on nano-silica, showed excellent drug adsorption through hydrogen-bonding interactions and efficient photodegradation of antibiotics. The hybrid material's enhanced conductivity and reduced band gap significantly improved pollution reduction by minimising electron-hole recombination. This allows for more efficient charge transport and better light absorption, boosting the material's ability to break down pollutants. Structural and morphological analyses were conducted using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Optimising the adsorption-photodegradation process involved investigating pH, catalyst dose, and radiation time. Non-linear optimisation revealed an efficiency exceeding 85 % for 400 mg/L tetracycline and doxycycline, the model antibiotics. The optimal parameters for maximal elimination were determined as pH = 4.3, hybrid mesosphere dose = 4.0 mg/mL, and radiation time = 10 min. Kinetic studies favored pseudo-second-order diffusion models over pseudo-first-order models. The hybrid mesosphere showed sustained efficiency after three cycles and performed well in real aqueous samples, removing over 80 % of each antibiotic. This study demonstrates the potential of the hybrid mesoporous material for removing pharmaceutical pollutants in water systems.

Controllable integration of nano zero-valent iron into MOFs with different structures for the purification of hexavalent chromium-contaminated water: Combined insights of scavenging performance and potential mechanism investigations

This work combined the stability of the porous structure of metal-organic frameworks with the strong reducibility of nano zero-valent iron, for the controllable integration of NZVI into MOFs to utilize the advantages of each component with enhancing the rapid decontamination and scavenging of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Hence, four kinds of MOFs/NZVI composites namely ZIF67/NZVI, MOF74/NZVI, MIL101(Fe)/NZVI, CuBTC/NZVI, were prepared for Cr(VI) capture. The results indicated that the stable structure of ZIF67, MOF74, MIL101(Fe), CuBTC, was beneficial for the dispersion of NZVI that could help more close contact between MOFs/NZVI reactive sites and Cr(VI), subsequently, MOFs/NZVI was proved to be better scavengers for Cr(VI) scavenging than NZVI alone. The Cr(VI) capture achieved the maximum adsorption capacity at pH ~ 4.0, which might be due to the participation of more H+ in the reaction and better corrosion of NZVI at lower pH. Mechanism investigation demonstrated synergy of adsorption, reduction and surface precipitation resulted in enhanced Cr(VI) scavenging, and Fe(0), dissolved and surface-bound Fe(II) were the primary reducing species. The findings of this investigation indicated that the as-prepared composites of ZIF67/NZVI, MOF74/NZVI, MIL101(Fe)/NZVI, CuBTC/NZVI, with high oxidation resistance and excellent reactivity, could provide reference for the decontamination and purification of actual Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Development of a novel bionanocomposite of UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate crosslinked by calcium chloride for azo dye removal: Insight into adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics

In the present work, UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate bionanocomposite adsorbent was fabricated using the in-situ crosslinking-gelation method, characterized by different techniques, and finally used for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution. Adsorption studies were performed using batch experiments and the influencing operational parameters such as contact time, initial pH solution, temperature, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pHPZC, swelling, regeneration, and reuse of the adsorbent were investigated. The various kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion) and isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich) were used to analysis of the experiment results. The results were best fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of dye on the adsorbent was obtained at 9.96 mg/g at pH = 11. The value of pHPZC for the adsorbent was obtained at about 8. According to thermodynamic parameters, the dye adsorption was found as spontaneous and endothermic due to the negative value of the ΔG° and ΔH°. After 4 times of reusability cycles, the adsorption efficiency remained above 86 %, which represented a certain regeneration ability. As a result, this research indicates that UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate bionanocomposite can be utilized as a promising bio-adsorbent for azo dye removal from contaminated wastewater.

Insights into the long-term immobilization performances and mechanisms of CMC-Fe0/FeS with different sulfur sources for uranium under anoxic and oxic aging

Nanoscale zerovalent iron (Fe0)-based materials have been demonstrated to be a effective method for the U(VI) removal. However, limited research has been conducted on the long-term immobilization efficiency and mechanism of Fe0-based materials for U(VI), which are essential for achieving safe handling and disposal of U(VI) on a large scale. In this study, the prepared carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sulfurization dual stabilized Fe0 (CMC-Fe0/FeS) exhibited excellent long-term immobilization performances for U(VI) under both anoxic and oxic conditions, with the immobilization efficiencies were respectively reached over 98.0 % and 94.8 % after 180 days of aging. Most importantly, different from the immobilization mechanisms of the fresh CMC-Fe0/FeS for U(VI) (the adsorption effect of -COOH and -OH groups, coordination effect with sulfur species, as well as reduction effect of Fe0), the re-mobilized U(VI) were finally re-immobilized by the formed FeOOH and Fe3O4 on the aged CMC-Fe0/FeS. Under anoxic conditions, more Fe3O4 was produced, which may be the main reason for the long-term immobilization U(VI). Under oxic conditions, the production of Fe3O4 and FeOOH were relatively high, which both played significant roles in re-immobilizing U(VI) through surface complexation, reduction and incorporation effects.

Colorimetric sensing for the sensitive detection of UO22+via the phosphorylation functionalized mesoporous silica-based controlled release system

In this study, we developed a simple and sensitive colorimetric sensing method for the detection of UO22+, which was built to release MB from the molybdenum disulfide with a phosphate group (MoS2-PO4) gated mesoporous silica nanoparticles functionalized phosphate group (MSN-PO4) with UO22+ chelating. In the presence of UO22+, MoS2-PO4 can be effectively adsorbed onto the surface of MSN-PO4 based on the coordination chemistry for strong affinity between the P-O bond and UO22+. The adsorbed MoS2-PO4 was then utilized as an ideal gate material to control the release of signal molecules (MB) entrapped within the pores of MSN-PO4, resulting in a detectable decrease in the absorption peak at 663 nm. This colorimetric sensing demonstrated the advantages of simplicity and easy manipulation and exhibited a linear response to the concentration of UO22+ within the range of 0.02-0.2 μM. The detection limit of UO22+ was determined to be 0.85 nM, which was lower than the limit (130 nmol L-1) set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Furthermore, the proposed colorimetric sensing method has been utilized to determine UO22+ in samples of Xiangjiang River and tap water, and a high recovery rate was achieved. This method shows promising potential in preventing and controlling environmental pollution.

Effective adsorption of amoxicillin by using UIO-66@ Cr-MIL-101 nanohybrid: isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic, and optimization by central composite design

In this research, the amoxicillin (AMX) removal was studied on a prepared nanosorbent from MOFs. The aim of this research work is to prepare nanohybrids based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an efficient nanosorbent for the absorption of amoxicillin drug. In this study, UIO-66 nanoparticles (UIO-66 NPs) were prepared from Zirconium (Zr) metal and 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (BDC). Then UIO-66@Cr-MIL-101 nanohybrid was synthesized by hydrothermal method. Structural and physicochemical properties of nanohybrid UIO-66@Cr-MIL-101 were characterized by different analyses such as X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), therapeutic goods administration (TGA), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The effect of four fundamental variables effective on adsorption was optimized by the central composite response surface methodology (CCRSM). This parameters including loading percentage of Cr-MIL-101 NPs (10-30%), initial concentration of AMX (20-140 mg L-1), contact time (20-60 min), and pH (20-10). The removal percentage (Re%) of AMX equal to 99.50% was obtained under the following conditions: The loading value of 20% Wt%, the initial concentration of AMX 80 mg L-1, contact time 20 min, and pH = 6. Also, the experimental data were investigated with famous kinetic models and isotherms, and it was observed that AMX removal by nanohybrid is correlated with the PSO kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm.

Significance of MOF adsorbents in uranium remediation from water

Uranium is considered as one of the most perilous radioactive contaminants in the aqueous environment. It has shown detrimental effects on both flora and fauna and because of its toxicities on human beings, therefore its exclusion from the aqueous environment is very essential. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an adsorbent for the removal of uranium from the aqueous environment could be a good approach. MOFs possess unique properties like high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, etc. This makes them promising adsorbents for the removal of uranium from contaminated water. In this paper, sources of uranium in the water environment, human health disorders, and application of the different types of MOFs as well as the mechanisms of uranium removal have been discussed meticulously.

N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) malonamide based amidoxime functionalized polymer immobilized in biomembranes for highly selective adsorption of uranium(VI)

Amidoxime compounds have been widely used in metal separation and recovery because of their excellent chelating properties to metal ions, especially to uranium (VI). In this study, N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) malonamide was obtained from ethanolamine and dimethyl malonate, and used to prepare a two-dimensional network polymer, then the obtained polymer was immobilized in an environmentally friendly chitosan biomembrane, which enhanced its stability and hydrophobicity, meanwhile the amidoxime functionalization was achieved by oximation reaction of bromoacetonitrile, the application of the material further extends to uranium (VI) separation in solutions. Due to the synergistic action of amide group and amidoxime group, poly (ethanolamine-malonamide) based amidoxime biomembranes (PEA-AOM) showed extraordinary adsorption effect on uranium (VI), among which the saturation adsorption capacity of PEA-AOM-2 was 748.64 mg/g. PEA-AOM-2 also had good reusability (following five cycles of adsorption-desorption, the recovery rate maintained at 88%) and selectivity for uranium (VI), showing satisfactory results in competitive ion coexistence system and simulated seawater experiments. This study demonstrated that PEA-AOM-2 provided a new option for uranium (VI) separation in complex environment and low-concentration uranium background.

Modeling and spectroscopic investigation of U(VI) removal on porous amidoxime-functionalized metal organic framework derived from macromolecular carbohydrate

The investigation of interaction mechanism of U(VI) selective removal on amidoxime-functionalized metal organic framework (i.e., UiO-66(Zr)-AO) derived from macromolecular carbohydrate is conducive to apply metal organic frameworks in actual environmental remediation. The batch experiments showed that UiO-66(Zr)-AO displayed the fast removal rate (equilibrium time of 0.5 h), high adsorption capacity (384.6 mg/g), excellent regeneration performance (<10 % decrease after three cycles) towards U(VI) removal due to the unprecedented chemical stability, large surface area and simple fabrication. U(VI) removal at different pH can be satisfactorily fitted by diffuse layer modeling with cation exchange at low pH and an inner-sphere surface complexation at high pH. The inner-sphere surface complexation was further demonstrated by X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. These findings revealed that UiO-66(Zr)-AO can be an effective adsorbent to remove the radionuclides from aqueous solution, which is crucial for recycling of uranium resource and decreasing the uranium harm to the environment.

Reduction and adsorption of uranium(VI) from aqueous solutions using nanoscale zero-valent manganese

Nano zero-valent manganese (nZVMn) is theoretically expected to exhibit high reducibility and adsorption capacity, yet its feasibility, performance, and mechanism for reducing and adsorbing hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) from wastewater remain unclear. In this study, nZVMn was prepared via borohydride reduction, and its behaviors about reduction and adsorption of U(VI), as well as the underlying mechanism, were investigated. Results indicated that nZVMn exhibited a maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity of 625.3 mg/g at a pH of 6 and an adsorbent dosage of 1 g/L, and the co-existing ions (K⁺, Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Tl⁺, Cl^-) at studied range had little interference on U(VI) adsorption. Furthermore, nZVMn effectively removed U(VI) from rare-earth ore leachate at a dosage of 1.5 g/L, resulting in a U(VI) concentration of lower than 0.017 mg/L in the effluent. Comparative tests demonstrated the superiority of nZVMn over other manganese oxides (Mn₂O₃ and Mn₃O₄). Characterization analyses, including X-ray diffraction and depth profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, combined with density functional theory calculation revealed that the reaction mechanism of U(VI) using nZVMn involved reduction, surface complexation, hydrolysis precipitation, and electrostatic attraction. This study provides a new alternative for efficient removal of U(VI) from wastewater and improves the understanding of the interaction between nZVMn and U(VI).

Sustainable removal of uranium from acidic wastewater using various mineral raw materials

Various types of plutonic and volcanic rocks and their alteration products from Greece (serpentinite, magnesite and andesite), have been used for sustainable removal of Uranium (U) from the acidic drainage of Kirki mine, as well as for the pH increase of the polluted solutions. In this light, this study aims at the further understanding and improvement of the ecofriendly reuse of sterile, natural raw materials (including those remaining through industrial processing and engineering testing of aggregate rocks), for remediation of acid mine drainage. The selected rocks constitute such residues of sterile materials were used as filters in experimental continuous flow devices in the form of batch-type columns, in order to investigate acidic remediation properties with special focus on U removal. The initial pH of the wastewater was 2.90 and increased after seven (7) days of experimental application and more specifically from the fourth day onwards. Uranium removal became quantitatively significant once pH reached the value of 5.09. The volcanic rocks appeared to be more effective for U removal than the plutonic ones because of microtextural differences. However, optimum U removal was mainly achieved by serpentinite: while the raw materials rich in Mg strongly reacted and remediated the pH of the drainage water waste. Furthermore, the increase of pH values due to the presence of mineral raw materials, provided increased oxidation potential which deactivated the toxic load of metals, particularly U. Consequently, batch-type serpentinite reaction with the tailing fluid caused a drop in U concentration from an initial value of 254 ppb to the one of 8 ppb, which corresponds to 97% of removal. Andesite presented the second best reactant for experimental remediation, especially when it was mixed with magnetically separated mineral fractions. Despite the fact that the proposed methodology is currently at a relatively low Technology Readiness Level (TRL), it carries the potential to become an extremely effective and low-cost alternative to conventional environmental restoration technologies.

Zr-MOF/NiS2 hybrids on nickel foam as advanced electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution

As a typical transition-metal sulfides (TMS), nickel disulfide (NiS₂) has attracted great attention in terms of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Howbeit, owing to the poor conductivity, slow reaction kinetics and instability of NiS₂, its HER activity is still necessary to be improved. In this work, we designed hybrid structures consisting of the nickel foam (NF) as a self-supporting electrode, NiS₂ derived from the sulfuration of NF and Zr-MOF grown on the surface of NiS₂@NF (Zr-MOF/NiS₂@NF). Due to the synergistic effect between the different constituents, the obtained Zr-MOF/NiS₂@NF demonstrates ideal electrochemical hydrogen evolution ability in acidic and alkalescent environment, reaching a standard current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at overpotentials of 110 and 72 mV in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. What is more, it also maintains excellent electrocatalytic durability for 10 h in both electrolytes. This work could provide a useful guidance on effectively combining metal sulfide with MOF for high-performance HER electrocatalysts.

MOF@biomass hybrids: Trends on advanced functional materials for adsorption

This contribution aims to demonstrate the scope of new hybrids between biomass and metal-organic frameworks (MOF@biomass) used in the adsorption process of pollutants. After a brief presentation of the use of the main series of MOFs as efficient adsorbents for different types of pollutants, the limitations of these structures related to particle size and hydrodynamic problems during their application are highlighted. Lignocellulosic biomasses are also recognized as an alternative adsorbent, mainly due to their high natural abundance and their low environmental impact during and after their application. The limited capacity of bioadsorbents becomes important in this research. Consequently, the largest amount of information existing in the last ten years on MOF-Biomass functionalization as a hybrid and improvement technology for adsorption processes is compiled, analyzed, compared and contrasted. So far, there is no evidence of works that exploit the concept of functionalization of adsorbents of different nature to give rise to new hybrid materials. Through this review it was found that the hybrids obtained show a higher adsorption capacity (Qe) compared to their precursors, due to the increase of organic functional groups provided by the biomass. Thus, for heavy metals, dyes, Arsenium anions and other organic and pharmaceutical compounds, there are increases in Qe of about 100 mg g^-1. The possibility of the new hybrid being studied for desorption and reuse processes is also raised, resulting in a new line of research that is attractive for the industry from an economic and environmental point of view. The functionalization methods and techniques used in the studies cited in this article are outlined. In conclusion, this research brings a new horizon of study in the field of adsorption and mentions the main future challenges related to new sustainable applications.

A Critical Review of the Removal of Radionuclides from Wastewater Employing Activated Carbon as an Adsorbent

Radionuclide-contaminated water is carcinogenic and poses numerous severe health risks and environmental dangers. The activated carbon (AC)-based adsorption technique has great potential for treating radionuclide-contaminated water due to its simple design, high efficiency, wide pH range, quickness, low cost and environmental friendliness. This critical review first provides a brief overview of the concerned radionuclides with their associated health hazards as well as different removal techniques and their efficacy of removing them. Following this overview, this study summarizes the surface characteristics and adsorption capabilities of AC derived from different biomass precursors. It compares the adsorption performance of AC to other adsorbents, such as zeolite, graphene, carbon nano-tubes and metal-organic frameworks. Furthermore, this study highlights the different factors that influence the physical characteristics of AC and adsorption capacity, including contact time, solution pH, initial concentration of radionuclides, the initial dosage of the adsorbent, and adsorption temperature. The theoretical models of adsorption isotherm and kinetics, along with their fitting parameter values for AC/radionuclide pairs, are also reviewed. Finally, the modification procedures of pristine AC, factors determining AC characteristics and the impact of modifying agents on the adsorption ability of AC are elucidated in this study; therefore, further research and development can be promoted for designing a highly efficient and practical adsorption-based radionuclide removal system.

Soya bean derived activated carbon as an efficient adsorbent for capture of valuable heavy metals from waste aqueous solution

The removal of hazardous metal ions from liquid waste effluents is very important for water as well as environmental safety. In this regard, this article discusses in detail the U(VI) uptake from aquatic environment using biomass-based Soya Bean activated carbon (labeled as AC-SB). XRD, SEM, FTIR, Raman, and BET analysis were used to characterize the synthesized AC-SB sorbent. Batch-type experiments were used to investigate the effect of various parameters on adsorption efficiency, including pH, metal-ion concentration, temperature, and contact time. The sorption experimental data have been described well with pseudo-second-order kinetic mathematical equations. The equilibrium state of the uptake reaction was 120 min. The Langmuir isotherm model accurately described the equilibrium process which declares that the uranium sorption is a monolayer and homogeneous process. The sorption capacity of the prepared AC was 32.7 mg g−1. Thermodynamic analysis explore that the U(VI) uptake process is endothermic, feasible and spontenous process. The displayed results demonstrate that the prepared AC-SB sorbent could be used as the proper material for uranium sorption from real matrix samples.

Impact of industrial effluents on the environment and human health and their remediation using MOFs-based hybrid membrane filtration techniques

The hazardous risk posed by industrial effluent discharge into the ecosystem has raised a plethora of environmental issues, public health, and safety concerns. The effluents from industries such as tanning, leather, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and textiles are create significant stress on the aquatic ecosystem, which induces significant toxicity, involved in endocrine disruptions, and inhibits reproductive functions. Therefore, this review presented an overall abridgment of the effects of these effluents and their ability to synergize with modern pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetic chemicals, nanoparticles, and heavy metals. We further emphasize the metal organic framework (MOF) based membrane filtration approach for remediation of industrial effluents in comparison to the traditional remediation process. The MOF based-hybrid membrane filters provide higher reusability, better adsorption, and superior removal rates through the implication of nanotechnology, while the traditional remediation process offers poorer filtration rates and stability.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Adsorption and Detection of Uranium(VI) from Aqueous Solution

The steady supply of uranium resources and the reduction or elimination of the ecological and human health hazards of wastewater containing uranium make the recovery and detection of uranium in water greatly important. Thus, the development of effective adsorbents and sensors has received growing attention. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possessing fascinating characteristics such as high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, and luminescence have been widely used for either uranium adsorption or sensing. Now pertinent research has transited slowly into simultaneous uranium adsorption and detection. In this review, the progress on the research of MOF-based materials used for both adsorption and detection of uranium in water is first summarized. The adsorption mechanisms between uranium species in aqueous solution and MOF-based materials are elaborated by macroscopic batch experiments combined with microscopic spectral technology. Moreover, the application of MOF-based materials as uranium sensors is focused on their typical structures, sensing mechanisms, and the representative examples. Furthermore, the bifunctional MOF-based materials used for simultaneous detection and adsorption of U(VI) from aqueous solution are introduced. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and perspectives of MOF-based materials for uranium adsorption and detection to provide a useful inspiration and significant reference for further developing better adsorbents and sensors for uranium containment and detection.

Enhancing the Overall Electrocatalytic Water-Splitting Efficiency of Mo2C Nanoparticles by Forming Hybrids with UiO-66 MOF

For efficient electrocatalytic water-splitting, developing a nonprecious-metal-based stable and highly active material is the most challenging task. In this paper, we have devised a synthesis strategy for a hybrid catalyst composed of molybdenum carbide (Mo₂C) and a Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) (UiO-66) via the solvothermal process. Synergistic effects between Mo₂C and UiO-66 lead to a decrease in the hydrogen adsorption energy on the catalysts, and Mo₂C/UiO-66 hybrids offer excellent catalytic activity in an alkaline environment for water-splitting. Particularly, the optimized Mo₂C/UiO-66 hybrid, termed MCU-2 with 50:50 wt % of both components, displayed the best catalytic performance for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). It offered a small overpotential of 174.1 mV to attain a current density of 10 mA/cm² and a Tafel plot value of 147 mV/dec for HER. It also offered a low overpotential of around 180 mV to attain a current density of 20 mA/cm² and a Tafel plot value of 134 mV/dec for OER. Additionally, the catalyst was stable for over 24 h and ∼1000 cycles with a very minute shift in performance, and the electrolyzer indicates that a potential of ∼1.3 V is required to reach 10 mA/cm² current density. It can be inferred from the results that the Mo₂C/UiO-66 hybrid is a promising candidate as a nonexpensive and active catalyst for overall electrocatalytic water-splitting as the devised catalyst exhibits enhanced kinetics for both OER and HER, a more exposed surface area, faster electron transport, and enhanced diffusion of the electrolyte.

Phosphate group functionalized magnetic metal-organic framework nanocomposite for highly efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution

The phosphate group functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the adsorbent for removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution still suffer from low adsorption efficiency, due to the low grafting rate of groups into the skeleton structure. Herein, a novel phosphate group functionalized metal-organic framework nanoparticles (denoted as Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@UiO-66-TPP NPs) designed and prepared by the chelation between Zr and phytic acid, showing fast adsorption rate and outstanding selectivity in aqueous media including 10 coexisting ions. The Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@UiO-66-TPP was properly characterized by TEM, FT-IR, BET, VSM and Zeta potential measurement. The removal performance of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@UiO-66-TPP for U(VI) was investigated systematically using batch experiments under different conditions, including solution pH, incubation time, temperature and initial U(VI) concentration. The adsorption kinetics, isotherm, selectivity studies revealed that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@UiO-66-TPP NPs possess fast adsorption rates (approximately 15 min to reach equilibrium), high adsorption capacities (307.8 mg/g) and outstanding selectivity (S_u = 94.4%) towards U(VI), which in terms of performance are much better than most of the other magnetic adsorbents. Furthermore, the adsorbent could be reused for U(VI) removal without obvious loss of adsorption capacity after five consecutive cycles. The research work provides a novel strategy to assemble phosphate group-functionalized MOFs.

Flammability and Thermal Kinetic Analysis of UiO-66-Based PMMA Polymer Composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as novel flame retardants for polymers, which, typically, can improve their thermal stability and flame retardancy. However, there is a lack of specific studies on the thermal decomposition kinetics of MOF-based polymer composites, although it is known that they are important for the modeling of flaming ignition, burning, and flame spread over them. The thermal decomposition mechanisms of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) have been well investigated, which makes PMMA an ideal polymer to evaluate how fillers affect its decomposition process and kinetics. Thus, in this study, UiO-66, a common type of MOF, was embedded into PMMA to form a composite. Based on the results from the microscale combustion calorimeter, the values of the apparent activation energy of PMMA/UiO-66 composites were calculated and compared against those of neat PMMA. Furthermore, under cone calorimeter tests, UiO-66, at only 1.5 wt%, can reduce the maximum burning intensity and average mass loss rate of PMMA by 14.3% and 12.4%, respectively. By combining UiO-66 and SiO₂ to form a composite, it can contribute to forming a more compact protective layer, which shows a synergistic effect on reducing the maximum burning intensity and average mass loss rate of PMMA by 22.0% and 14.7%, respectively.

Efficiently immobilizing uranium (VI) by oxidized carbon foam

Oxidized carbon foam (oxidized CF) was prepared by using a facile chemical oxidation treatment at relatively low temperature of 450 °C and applied to capture uranyl cation [U(VI)] from aqueous solutions. The effects of pH, contact time, initial U(VI) concentration, and temperature on the U(VI) absorption performance of oxidized CF were investigated by batch experiments. The oxidized CF was illustrated to exhibit fast sorption kinetics (92% removal within 15 min and 98% removal in 2 h) and high sorption capacity (305.77 mg g^-1 at pH 5) toward U(VI). Integrated analyses combining energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were applied on the U(VI)-loaded oxidized CF, showing the introduction of carboxyl groups as U(VI) sorption sites on the surface of CF after oxidation treatment. Furthermore, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy was employed to identify the binding modes of U(VI) indicating that each UO₂²⁺ cation is coordinated with one or two carboxyl groups on the equatorial plane. Notably, the low content of U(VI) in wastewater can be efficiently immobilized by the oxidized CF, and the immobilized U(VI) can be further concentrated and converted into Na₂U₂O₇ or U₃O₈ by a simple sintering step. These findings presented in this work suggest the potential of using oxidized CF for further treatment of low concentration wastewater containing U(VI).

Metal-Organic-Framework Based Functional Materials for Uranium Recovery: Performance Optimization and Structure/Functionality-Activity Relationships

Uranium recovery has profound significance in both uranium resource acquisition and pollution treatment. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention as potential uranium adsorbents owing to their tunable structural topology and designable functionalities. This review explores the research progress in representative classic MOFs (MIL-101, UiO-66, ZIF-8/ZIF-67) and other advanced MOF-based materials for efficient uranium extraction in aqueous or seawater environments. The uranium uptake mechanism of the MOF-based materials is refined, and the structure/functionality-property relationship is further systematically elucidated. By summarizing the typical functionalization and structure design methods, the performance improvement strategies for MOF-based adsorbents are emphasized. Finally, the present challenges and potential opportunities are proposed for the breakthrough of high-performance MOF-based materials in uranium extraction.

Synthesis of MOFs/GO composite for corrosion resistance application on carbon steel

Two unreported metal–organic frameworks [Cu(6-Me-2,3-pydc)(1,10-phen)·7H₂O]_n (namely Cu-MOF) and [Mn₂(2,2′-bca)₂(H₂O)₂]_n (namely Mn-MOF) were synthesized by a solvothermal method and their structures were characterized and confirmed by elemental analysis, X-ray single crystal diffraction, Fourier infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Cu-MOF/graphene (Cu-MOF/GR), Cu-MOF/graphene oxide (Cu-MOF/GO), Mn-MOF/graphene (Mn-MOF/GR) and Mn-MOF/graphene oxide (Mn-MOF/GO) composite materials were successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method and characterized and analyzed by PXRD, SEM and TEM. In order to study the corrosion inhibition properties of the Cu-MOF/GR, Cu-MOF/GO, Mn-MOF/GR and Mn-MOF/GO composite materials on carbon steel, they were mixed with waterborne acrylic varnish to prepare a series of composite coatings to explore in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution by electrochemical measurements and results showed that the total polarization resistance of the 3% Cu-MOF/GO and 3% Mn-MOF/GO composite coatings on the carbon steel surface were relatively large, and were 55 097 and 55 729 Ω cm², respectively, which could effectively protect the carbon steel from corrosion. After immersion for 30 days, the 3% Mn-MOF/GO composite still maintained high corrosion resistance, the |Z| values were still as high as 23 804 Ω cm². Therefore, MOFs compounded with GO can produce a synergistic corrosion inhibition effect and improve the corrosion resistance of the coating; this conclusion is well confirmed by the adhesion capability test.
