Abstract
Importance Recognizing associations between exposure to common environmental toxicants and mental disorders such as depression is crucial for guiding targeted mechanism research and the initiation of disease prevention efforts. Objectives To comprehensively screen and assess the associations between potential environmental toxicants and depressive symptoms and to assess whether systemic inflammation serves as a mediator. Design, Setting, and Participants A total of 3427 participants from the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination and Survey who had information on blood or urine concentrations of environmental toxicants and depression scores assessed by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were included. Statistical analysis was performed from July 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024. Exposures Sixty-two toxicants in 10 categories included acrylamide, arsenic, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, iodine, metals, nicotine metabolites, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compound (VOC) metabolites; and perchlorate, nitrate, and thiocyanate. Main Outcomes and Measures An exposome-wide association study and the deletion-substitution-addition algorithm were used to assess associations with depression scores (PHQ-9 ≥5) adjusted for other important covariates. A mediation analysis framework was used to evaluate the mediating role of systemic inflammation assessed by the peripheral white blood cell count. Results Among the 3427 adults included, 1735 (50.6%) were women, 2683 (78.3%) were younger than 65 years, and 744 (21.7%) were 65 years or older, with 839 (24.5%) having depressive symptoms. In terms of race and ethnicity, 570 participants (16.6%) were Mexican American, 679 (19.8%) were non-Hispanic Black, and 1314 (38.3%) were non-Hispanic White. We identified associations between 27 chemical compounds or metals in 6 of 10 categories of environmental toxicants and the prevalence of depressive symptoms, including the VOC metabolites N-acetyl-S-(2-hydroxy-3-butenyl)-l-cysteine (odds ratio [OR], 1.74 [95% CI, 1.38, 2.18]) and total nicotine equivalent-2 (OR, 1.42 [95% CI, 1.26-1.59]). Men and younger individuals appear more vulnerable to environmental toxicants than women and older individuals. Peripheral white blood cell count mediated 5% to 19% of the associations. Conclusions and Relevance In this representative cross-sectional study of adults with environmental toxicant exposures, 6 categories of environmental toxicants were associated with depressive symptoms with mediation by systemic inflammation. This research provides insight into selecting environmental targets for mechanistic research into the causes of depression and facilitating efforts to reduce environmental exposures.

Abstract
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey provides comprehensive data on demographics, sociology, health and nutrition. Conducted in 2-year cycles since 1999, most of its data are publicly accessible, making it pivotal for research areas like studying social determinants of health or tracking trends in health metrics such as obesity or diabetes. Assembling the data and analyzing it presents a number of technical and analytic challenges. This paper introduces the nhanesA R package, which is designed to assist researchers in data retrieval and analysis and to enable the sharing and extension of prior research efforts. We believe that fostering community-driven activity in data reproducibility and sharing of analytic methods will greatly benefit the scientific community and propel scientific advancements. Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between specific chemical components of PM2.5 and depression remains largely unknown. METHODS We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover analysis with a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to evaluate the relationship of PM2.5 and its chemical components, including black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), sulfate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-), and ammonium (NH4+), with the depression incidence. Daily depression outpatients were enrolled from Huizhou, Shenzhen, and Zhaoqing. RESULTS Among 247,281 outpatients, we found the strongest cumulative effects of PM2.5 and its chemical components with the odd ratios (ORs) of 1.607 (95% CI: 1.321, 1.956) and 1.417 (95% CI: 1.245, 1.612) at the 50th percentile of PM2.5 and OM at lag 21, respectively. Furthermore, the ORs with SO42- and NH4+ at the 75th percentile on the same lag day were 1.418 (95% CI: 1.247, 1.613) and 1.025 (95% CI: 1.009, 1.140). Relatively stronger associations were observed among females and the elderly. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that PM2.5 and its chemical components might be important risk factors for depression. Reducing PM2.5 emissions, with a particular focus on the major sources of SO42- and OM, might potentially alleviate the burden of depression in South China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent significant components of environmental pollution, typically occurring as mixtures, raising concerns about their potential impact on human health. However, the combined effect of HMs and PAHs exposure on depression has not been explored. METHODS Leveraging National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data spanning 2005 to 2016, we employ survey-weighted multiple logistic regression models to probe the interrelation between HMs, PAHs, and depression. This exploration is complemented by age and gender-stratified analyses, as well as a determination of the dose-response linkage via restricted cubic spline regression. Furthermore, the combined impact of HMs and PAHs on depression was evaluated through a range of statistical methodologies. RESULTS The study encompasses 7732 adults. Our findings unveil notable associations, indicating the significant influence of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and all six PAHs metabolites on depression. Moreover, mixed exposure to HMs and PAHs emerges as a substantial contributor to an augmented depression risk, with Cd, Pb, 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-NAP), 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-FLU), and 1-hydroxypyrene (1-PYR) likely driving this positive relationship. Intriguingly, subgroup analyses highlight greater prominence of these connections among individuals aged 20-59 and among women. Furthermore, the results tentatively suggest a potential interplay between Cd and 2-NAP in relation to depression. CONCLUSION This study posits that exposure to both individual and combined HMs and PAHs may be associated with an elevated risk of depression. Further prospective investigations are warranted to substantiate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence shows that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure may adversely affect human health. However, the links between combined exposure to PAHs and neuropsychiatric manifestations in perimenopausal women remain unclear. METHODS To explore these relationships further, we used the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) of the 2005-2012 cycles. After filtering, five hundred forty-seven perimenopausal women aged 45-55 years were included in our analysis. Eight PAHs metabolites were measured to represent PAHs exposure in the body. In our study, depression, sleep disorders, and frequent mental distress (FMD) were used to describe the neuropsychiatric manifestations. Because of the bivariate correlations among PAHs compounds, principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to achieve the dimension reduction process of PAHs compounds. To figure out if there is a relationship between urinary PAH metabolites and outcomes, multiple logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used. RESULTS The findings showed that urinary PAHs concentrations in a certain range were related to neuropsychiatric manifestations. In detail, the results of logistic regressions, RCS, and BKMR all indicated that urinary PAHs were positively correlated with depression. In addition, the results of principal components regression and RCS showed associations between urinary PAHs and the risk of FMD or sleep disorders, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to PAHs was linked to neuropsychiatric manifestations in perimenopausal women, but more pertinent researches are required to understand the connections fully.

Abstract
Although several epidemiological studies have suggested that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may induce brain atrophy, no longitudinal study has investigated the effect of PAH exposure on brain structural changes. This study examined the longitudinal associations between urinary PAH metabolites and brain cortical thickness. We obtained urinary concentrations of PAH metabolites and brain magnetic resonance images from 327 adults (≥50 years of age) without dementia at baseline and 3-year follow-up. We obtained whole-brain and regional cortical thicknesses, as well as an Alzheimer's disease (AD)-specific marker for cortical atrophy (a higher score indicated a greater similarity to patients with AD) at baseline and follow-up. We built a linear mixed-effect model including each of urinary PAH metabolites as the time-varying exposure variable of interest. We found that increases in urinary concentrations of 1-hydroxypyrene (β = -0.004; 95% CI, -0.008 to -0.001) and 2-hydroxyfluorene (β = -0.011; 95% CI, -0.015 to -0.006) were significantly associated with a reduced whole-brain cortical thickness. A urinary concentration of 2-hydroxyfluorene was significantly associated with an increased AD-specific cortical atrophy score (β = 2.031; 95% CI, 0.512 to 3.550). The specific brain regions showing the association of urinary concentrations of 1-hydroxypyrene, 2-naphthol, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, or 2-hydroxyfluorene with cortical thinning were the frontal, parietal, temporal, and cingulate lobes. These findings suggested that exposure to PAHs may reduce brain cortical thickness and increase the similarity to AD-specific cortical atrophy patterns in adults.

Abstract
The association of formaldehyde exposure with depression remains unknown. We used the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015-2016 to evaluate the association between formaldehyde exposure and depression. Multivariable logistic regressions and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were implemented to examine the association between formaldehyde exposure and depression. A total of 1336 participants were included in the analysis, of which 110 (8.23%) participants were depressed. After adjusting for confounders, a significant association between formaldehyde exposure and depression (OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00-1.02, P = 0.043) was observed. The RCS plot showed a positive association in a linear manner (PNonlinear = 0.109), and the risk began to rise rapidly with concentrations above 129.37 nmol/g HB. The positive association remained in participants with high-intensity physical activity (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.02-1.13, P = 0.003), but not in participants with other physical activities. Moreover, we constructed a novel nomogram to easily estimate the individual-specific probabilities of depression. In conclusion, formaldehyde exposure was associated with an elevated risk of depression, and the effect exhibited differences in participants with different levels of physical activity.

Abstract
Worldwide, skin cancer affects millions of people yearly and is broadly classified into melanoma and nonmelanoma types of skin cancer. The toxicity of metals to human health is a public and clinical health problem due to their widespread use in tools, machinery, and appliances as well as their widespread distribution in the air, water, and soil. Arsenic is a carcinogenic metalloid and available in the Earth's crust. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic to humans, and incomplete combustion of fossil fuels is the main source of PAHs. Human populations exposed to metals from various sources can lead to various diseases including cancer. Limited studies are conducted to simultaneously assess the correlation of multiple arsenic, PAHs, metals with the occurrence of skin cancer. This study aimed to analyze the association between six PAHs compounds, seven types of arsenic, and fourteen metals from urine specimen with skin cancer in US adults. We performed a cross-sectional analysis using data from a total of 14,716 adults from the National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) database for three cycles ranging from 2011-2012 to 2015-2016. Specialized weighted complex survey logit regressions were conducted. Linear logit regression models using only main effects were performed first to identify the correlation between the selected demographic and lifestyle variables and melanoma, nonmelanoma, and unknown types of skin cancer. A second set of linear, main-effects logit regression models were constructed to examine the correlation between melanoma, nonmelanoma, and other types of skin cancers and seven types of arsenic (arsenous acid, arsenic acid, arsenobetaine, arsenocholine, dimethylarsinic acid, monomethylacrsonic acid, and total arsenic), six PAHs (1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxyphenathrene, and 1-hydroxypyrene), and fourteen metals (barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, molybdenum, manganese, lead, antimony, tin, strontium, thallium, tungsten, uranium, and mercury) when adjusted for the selected covariates. The statistical analysis was conducted using R software, version 4.0.4. A marginal positive significant correlation between total arsenic and nonmelanoma was observed. This study identified a significant positive association between barium, cadmium, cesium, mercury, tin, and melanoma development. Cesium showed a significant positive statistical association for nonmelanoma, and thallium showed a borderline significant statistical association for nonmelanoma. A statistically significant positive association was found between cadmium and an unknown type of skin cancer. The findings of this study indicated a statistically significant positive association between skin cancer and barium, cadmium, cesium, tin, mercury, and thallium. Further studies are recommended in humans to refute or confirm these findings.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic changed the learning style of university students in the US, affecting their mental health of students. This study aims to understand the factors that influenced depression during the COVID-19 pandemic in the New Mexico State University (NMSU) student population. Methods A questionnaire assessing mental health and lifestyle factors was delivered to NMSU students by using QualtricsXM software. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire- 9 (PHQ-9); depression was defined as a score ≥10. Single and multifactor logistic regression was performed using R software. Results This study determined that the prevalence of depression among female students was 72% and 56.30% among male students. Several covariates were significant for increased odds of depression in students, including decreased diet quality (OR: 5.126, 95% CI: 3.186-8.338), annual household income $10,000 - $20,000 (OR: 3.161, 95% CI: 1.444-7.423), increased alcohol consumption (OR: 2.362, 95% CI: 1.504-3.787), increased smoking (OR: 3.581, 95% CI:1.671-8.911), quarantining due to COVID (OR: 2.001, 95% CI: 1.348-2.976), and family member dying of COVID (OR: 1.916, 95% CI: 1.072-3.623). Covariates of being male (OR: 0.501, 95% CI: 0.324-0.776), married (OR: 0.499, 95% CI: 0.318-0.786), eating a balanced diet (OR: 0.472, 95% CI: 0.316-0.705), and sleeping 7-8 h per night (OR: 0.271, 95% CI: 0.175-0.417) were all protective factors for depression in NMSU students. Limitation This is a cross-sectional study, and therefore, causation cannot be determined. Conclusion Several factors regarding demographics, lifestyle, living arrangements, alcohol and tobacco use, sleeping behavior, family vaccination, and COVID status were significantly associated with depression in students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Background The aim of the current study was to investigate the link between human exposure to PAHs with short sleep duration (SSD) and self-reported trouble sleeping. Methods A total of 9,754 participants and 9,777 participants obtained from NHANES 2005-2016 were included in this cross-sectional study about SSD and self-reported trouble sleeping, respectively. The association between urinary PAHs metabolites with the prevalence of SSD and self-reported trouble sleeping by the weighted multivariate logistic regression model, restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves, and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression. Results After adjusting for all covariates, 1-hydroxynapthalene, 2-hydroxynapthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, and 1-hydroxyphenanthrene demonstrated positive associations with SSD prevalence. Besides, 1-hydroxynapthalene, 2-hydroxynapthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, and 1-hydroxyphenanthrene exhibited positive associations with the prevalence of self-reported trouble sleeping following the adjustment for all covariates. RCS curves confirmed the non-linear associations between 1-hydroxynapthalene, 2-hydroxynapthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, and 1-hydroxyphenanthrene with the prevalence of SSD, and 1-hydroxynapthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, and 2-hydroxyfluorene with the prevalence of self-reported trouble sleeping. The WQS results showed that mixed exposure to PAH metabolites had a significant positive association with the prevalence of SSD (OR: 1.087, 95% CI: 1.026, 1.152, p = 0.004) and self-reported trouble sleeping (OR: 1.190, 95% CI: 1.108, 1.278, p < 0.001). Conclusion Urinary concentrations of PAH metabolites exhibited a close association with the prevalence of SSD and self-reported trouble sleeping in US adults. More emphasis should be placed on the importance of environmental effects on sleep health.

Abstract
Crude petroleum oil spillage is becoming a global concern for environmental pollution and poses a severe threat to flora and fauna. Bioremediation is considered a clean, eco-friendly, and cost-effective process to achieve success among the several technologies adopted to mitigate fossil fuel pollution. However, due to the hydrophobic and recalcitrant nature of the oily components, they are not readily bioavailable to the biological components for the remediation process. In the last decade, nanoparticle-based restoration of oil-contaminated, owing to several attractive properties, has gained significant momentum. Thus, intertwining nano- and bioremediation can lead to a suitable technology termed 'nanobioremediation' expected to nullify bioremediation's drawbacks. Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI), an advanced and sophisticated technique that utilizes digital brains or software to perform different tasks, may radically transfer the bioremediation process to develop an efficient, faster, robust, and more accurate method for rehabilitating oil-contaminated systems. The present review outlines the critical issues associated with the conventional bioremediation process. It analyses the significance of the nanobioremediation process in combination with AI to overcome such drawbacks of a traditional approach for efficiently remedying crude petroleum oil-contaminated sites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have examined the combined effects of dietary and lifestyle factors on depressive symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the association between oxidative balance score (OBS) and depressive symptoms and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS A total of 21,283 adults from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Depressive symptoms were defined as a total score of ≥10 on the Patient's Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Twenty dietary and lifestyle factors were selected to calculate the OBS. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between OBS and depression risk. Mediation analyses were conducted to explore the roles of oxidative stress and inflammatory markers. RESULTS In multivariate model, a significant negative association was found between OBS and depression risk. Compared with those in OBS tertile 1, participants in tertile 3 had lower odds of developing depressive symptoms (OR:0.50; 95 % CI:0.40-0.62; P < 0.001). Restricted cubic splines showed a linear relationship between OBS and depression risk (P for nonlinearity = 0.67). Moreover, higher OBS was found to be associated with lower depression scores (β = -0.07; 95 % CI:-0.08, -0.05; P < 0.001). GGT concentrations and WBC counts mediated the association between OBS and depression scores by 5.72 % and 5.42 %, respectively (both P < 0.001), with a joint mediated effect of 10.77 % (P < 0.001). LIMITATIONS This study was a cross-sectional design making it difficult to infer a causal association. CONCLUSIONS OBS is negatively associated with depression, which may be mediated in part by oxidative stress and inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been demonstrated to be neurotoxic. OBJECTIVES To summarize the existing epidemiological studies to quantify the effects of PAHs exposure on child neurodevelopment and adult emotional disorders. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA We conducted a systematic literature search for studies of child neurodevelopment and adult emotional disorders published in English up to April 2022 in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Embase using combinations of MeSH terms and Entry terms, and the articles were filtered out according to data availability. A variety of common PAHs were included in the meta-analysis: 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 9-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, 3-hydroxyphenanthrene, 4-hydroxyphenanthrene, 9-hydroxyphenanthrene, 1-hydroxypyrene and benzoapyrene (BaP). STUDY EVALUATION AND SYNTHESIS METHODS We extracted the content of each article, summarized its design characteristics and performed quality evaluation. We combined the odds ratio (OR) available in various studies to obtain the risk of PAHs exposure and adaptive, language, social, attention, motor skills and child depression/anxiety in children ≤ 15 years old. In addition, we also conducted a meta-analysis on the relationship between PAHs exposure and the risk of depression in adults. RESULTS We included a total of 16 epidemiological studies (4 cross-sectional studies and 12 cohort studies). The sample size of all included studies ranged from 110 to 9625. Prenatal exposure to PAHs was found to be associated with increased risk of social behavior (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.00-2.54), attention (OR = 2.99, 95% CI: 1.48-6.02), motor skill problems (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.27-2.86) and any adverse neurodevelopmental outcome in children (OR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.69-2.62). In addition, we found that PAHs exposure could increase the risk of adult depression, with 2-hydroxyfluorene exposure showing the highest combined OR (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.10-2.00). CONCLUSIONS The results suggested that PAHs exposure are associated with increased risk of child neurodevelopment and adult depression. The neurotoxic effects of PAHs exposure in human being should be paid more attention. The results suggested that PAHs exposure are associated with increased risk of child neurodevelopment and adult depression. Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the primary causes of death with poor life expectancy after diagnosis. History of past respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), emphysema, and chronic bronchitis can increase the risk of lung cancer. Very few studies are available to simultaneously assess multiple respiratory diseases and lung cancer. The objective of this study was to investigate correlations between asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and chronic obstructive lung disease with lung cancer in the US adult population. This was a cross-sectional study using data from a total of 23,523 adult participants from the National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) datasets for seven cycles ranging from 2003-2004 to 2015-2016. To analyze the data, specialized weighted complex survey logit regressions were conducted. Linear logit regression models using only main-effects were constructed first to assess the correlation between the selected demographic and lifestyle variables and asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and COPD. A second set of linear, main-effects logit regression models were constructed to examine the correlation between lung cancer and asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, COPD when corrected for the selected covariates. The study identified positive correlations between emphysema, chronic bronchitis, COPD, and lung cancer. No correlation between asthma and lung cancer was established. Of the covariates studied, race/ethnicity, marital status, highest educational level, age, family income to poverty ratio, and lifetime smoking were also found to be correlated with the presence of lung cancer. Correlations between the covariates gender, body mass index, alcohol consumption, and country of birth and lung cancer were not found. The study established statistically significant correlations between lung cancer and the lung diseases emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and COPD. The lack of association between asthma and lung cancer may arise from the timeline of diagnosis asthma or type of lung cancer. The study also established significant correlations between lung cancer and several of the covariates included in the analysis. It also established correlations between the covariates and the lung diseases asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and COPD.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Emerging evidence has suggested harmful associations of air pollutants with neurodegenerative diseases among older adults. However, little is known about outcomes regarding late-life mental disorders, such as geriatric depression. OBJECTIVE To investigate if long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with increased risk of late-life depression diagnosis among older adults in the US. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This population-based longitudinal cohort study consisted of US Medicare enrollees older than 64 years. Data were obtained from the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Chronic Conditions Warehouse. The participants were continuously enrolled in the Fee-for-Service program and both Medicare Part A and Part B. After the 5-year washout period at entry, a total of 8 907 422 unique individuals were covered over the study period of 2005 to 2016, who contributed to 1 526 690 late-onset depression diagnoses. Data analyses were performed between March 2022 and November 2022. EXPOSURES The exposures consisted of residential long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), measured in micrograms per cubic meter; nitrogen dioxide (NO2), measured in parts per billion; and ozone (O3), measured in parts per billion. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Late-life depression diagnoses were identified via information from all available Medicare claims (ie, hospital inpatient, skilled nursing facility, home health agency, hospital outpatient, and physician visits). Date of the first occurrence was obtained. Hazard ratios and percentage change in risk were estimated via stratified Cox proportional hazards models accounting for climate coexposures, neighborhood greenness, socioeconomic conditions, health care access, and urbanicity level. RESULTS A total of 8 907 422 Medicare enrollees were included in this study with 56.8% being female individuals and 90.2% being White individuals. The mean (SD) age at entry (after washout period) was 73.7 (4.8) years. Each 5-unit increase in long-term mean exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and O3 was associated with an adjusted percentage increase in depression risk of 0.91% (95% CI, 0.02%-1.81%), 0.61% (95% CI, 0.31%- 0.92%), and 2.13% (95% CI, 1.63%-2.64%), respectively, based on a tripollutant model. Effect size heterogeneity was found among subpopulations by comorbidity condition and neighborhood contextual backgrounds. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this cohort study among US Medicare enrollees, harmful associations were observed between long-term exposure to air pollution and increased risk of late-life depression diagnosis.

Abstract
In recent years, there is growing evidence that long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with depressive symptoms. However, little is known about the individual effects of PM2.5 components, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. We investigated the association between long-term exposure to major components of PM2.5 and worsening depressive symptoms in Chinese adults based on a large, long-term, nationally representative, population-based prospective cohort. Our data were derived from China Family Panel Study (CFPS) wave 2012, 2016 and 2018 and a long-term (2010-2019) high-resolution PM2.5 components dataset covering the whole China. We assessed respondents' depressive symptoms using standardized scales and applied advanced Fixed-effect ordered logit model (FE-ologit) to capture the ordinal nature of respondents' depressive symptoms and control for individual-specific and time-invariant effects to investigate their associations with PM2.5 components. We included 9503 respondents and the FE-ologit model results indicated that the odds ratio of increase per standard unit was 1.118 (95 % CI: 1.020, 1.225) for black carbon, 1.134 (95 % CI: 1.028, 1.252) for organic matter, 1.127 for ammonium (95 % CI: 1.011, 1.255), 1.107 for nitrate (95 % CI: 0.981, 1.248), and 1.117 for sulfate (95 % CI: 1.020, 1.224). Our study suggests that long-term exposure to PM2.5 components is significantly associated with worsening of depressive symptoms, and that different components may have different toxicity. Reducing PM2.5 emissions, especially the major sources of organic matter and ammonium, may reduce the burden of depressive symptoms in Chinese adults.

Abstract
Arsenic is a known carcinogen and is naturally available in earth's crust. Inorganic arsenic is an environmental pollutant with immunosuppressive properties. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. HPV is linked to several types of cancers in males, including oral, anal, and penile cancer. However, limited information is available on the effect of arsenic on HPV in males. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of urinary arsenic species (speciated and total) and the prevalence of HPV infection in the male population. HPV prevalence in males was analyzed using the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine associations of seven types of urinary arsenic species (arsenous acid, arsenic acid, arsenobetaine, arsenocholine, dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), total arsenic acid) with HPV risk for male participants aged 18-59 years (N = 1516). Demographic characteristics were included in the logistic regression model for each arsenic variable. All statistical analyses were conducted by using the software R (version 4.2.0). Increasing DMA was positively associated with the prevalence of low-risk HPV (odds ratio (OR): 1.075, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.025, 1.128) in addition to the sum of total toxic arsenic species (TUA1) including arsenous acid, arsenic acid, DMA, and MMA (OR: 1.068, 95% CI: 1.022, 1.116). High-risk HPV strains were found to be positively associated with arsenic acid (OR: 1.806, 95% CI: 1.134, 2.876) and total arsenic minus the sum of the two organic arsenic species arsenobetaine and arsenocholine (TUA2) at quartile 3 (Q3) level (OR: 1.523, 95% CI: 1.102, 2.103). The logistic regression models also showed that race and marital status were significant factors related to high-risk HPV. Our study reported that DMA and TUA1 are associated with low-risk HPV and arsenic acid is associated with high-risk HPV infections in males. Future research is required to confirm or refute this finding.

Abstract
Metals, arsenic, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have all been linked to respiratory diseases. Chronic bronchitis, which is a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a major public health concern and source of morbidity and mortality in the US. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation of 14 urinary metals (antimony, barium, cadmium, cesium, cobalt, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, strontium, thallium, tin, tungsten, uranium), seven species of arsenic, and seven forms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations and chronic bronchitis in the US population. A cross-sectional analysis using three datasets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2011 and 2016 in adults, aged 20 years and older. Chronic bronchitis was determined using a self-questionnaire from the NHANES dataset. A specialized weighted complex survey design analysis package was used to analyze NHANES data. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine the correlation between urinary metals, arsenic, PAHs, and chronic bronchitis. Models were adjusted for lifestyle and demographic factors. A total of 4186 participants were analyzed; 49.8% were female and 40.5% were non-Hispanic White. All seven types of PAHs showed a positive association with chronic bronchitis (1-hydroxynaphthalene odds ratio (OR): 1.559, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.271-1.912; 2-hydroxynaphthalene OR: 2.498, 95% CI: 1.524-4.095; 3-hydroxyfluorene OR: 2.752, 95% CI: 2.100-3.608; 2-hydroxyfluorene OR: 3.461, 95% CI: 2.438-4.914; 1-hydroxyphenanthrene OR: 2.442, 95% CI: 1.515-3.937; 1-hydroxypyrene OR: 2.828, 95% CI: 1.728-4.629; 2 & 3-hydroxyphenanthrene OR: 3.690, 95% CI: 2.309-5.896). Of the metals, only urinary cadmium showed a statistically significant positive association (OR: 2.435, 95% CI: 1.401-4.235) with chronic bronchitis. No other metals or arsenic were correlated with chronic bronchitis. Seven forms of urinary PAHs, cadmium, and several demographic factors were associated with chronic bronchitis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Environmental exposure to metals and chemicals can increase the risk of acute and chronic pulmonary diseases in the human population. This study aimed to analyze seven forms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), seven types of arsenic species, fourteen types of urinary metals including antimony, barium, cadmium, cesium, cobalt, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, strontium, thallium, tin, tungsten, uranium, and the link with emphysema in the US adult cigarette smoking population. METHODS A specialized weighted complex survey design analysis using 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) datasets was conducted. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between urinary metals, arsenic, PAHs, and emphysema in adult smokers. R software was used to conduct the statistical analysis. RESULTS All 4th quantile concentrations of PAHs, including 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxypyrene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, and 2 & 3-hydroxyphenanthrene, were significantly associated with emphysema in smokers. The 3rd quantile of 1-hydroxypyrene were also associated with increased odds of emphysema in smokers. Among arsenic and metals, the 4th quantile of cadmium was associated with an increased odds of emphysema in smokers. The 3rd quantile of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and 4th quantile of mercury were found to have inverse relationships with emphysema in smokers. Several demographic factors had significant associations with emphysema in smokers. CONCLUSION Urinary PAHs and cadmium were associated with increased odds of emphysema in smokers. DMA and mercury had an inverse association with emphysema in smokers.

Abstract
Associations between environmental metals and chemicals and adverse human health effects have emerged recently, but the links among environmental metals and respiratory diseases are less studied. The aim of this study was to assess 14 urinary metals (cadmium, barium, cobalt, molybdenum, mercury, cesium, manganese, antimony, lead, tin, strontium, tungsten, thallium, and uranium), seven species of arsenic (arsenous acid, arsenic acid, arsenobetaine, arsenocholine, dimethylarsinic acid, monomethylarsonic acid, and total arsenic) and seven polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) (1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 1-hydroxypyrene, 2 & 3-hydroxyphenanthrene) compounds' concentrations in urine and the correlation with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the adult US population. A cross-sectional analysis using the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset was conducted. Self-questionnaires related to COPD criteria were used to identify the COPD cases. The correlation between urinary metals and PAH compounds and COPD was calculated. The total study population analyzed included 2885 adults aged 20 years and older. Seven types of urinary PAHs including 1-hydroxynaphthalene [odds ratio (OR): 1.832, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.210, 2.775], 2-hydroxynaphthalene [OR: 3.361, 95% CI: 1.519, 7.440], 3-hydroxyfluorene [OR: 2.641, 95% CI: 1.381, 5.053], 2-hydroxyfluorene [OR: 3.628, 95% CI: 1.754, 7.506], 1-hydroxyphenanthrene [OR: 2.864, 95% CI: 1.307, 6.277], 1-hydroxypyrene [OR: 4.949, 95% CI: 2.540, 9.643] and 2 & 3-hydroxyphenanthrene [OR: 3.487, 95% CI: 1.382, 8.795] were positively associated with COPD. Urinary cadmium [OR: 12.382, 95% CI: 4.459, 34.383] and tin [OR: 1.743, 95% CI: 1.189, 2.555] showed positive associations with increased odds of COPD. The other types of urinary metals were not associated with COPD. The study observed that urinary PAHs, cadmium, and tin are significantly associated with COPD.

Abstract
A growing body of research has investigated the relationship between indoor air pollution from solid fuel and depression risk. Our study aimed to elucidate the relationship between indoor air pollution from solid fuel and depression in observational studies. The effect of indoor air pollution on depression was estimated using pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Heterogeneity was evaluated by the I-squared value (I2), and the random-effects model was adopted as the summary method. We finalized nine articles with 70,214 subjects. The results showed a statistically positive relationship between the use of household solid fuel and depression (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.09-1.36). Subgroup analysis based on fuel type groups demonstrated that indoor air pollution from solid fuel was a higher risk to depression (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1. 10-1.39; I2 = 67.0%) than that from biomass (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 0.96-1.45; I2 = 66.5%). In terms of fuel use, the use of solid fuel for cooking and heating increased depression risk, and the pooled ORs were 1.21 (95% CI = 1.08-1.36) and 1.23 (95% CI = 1.13-1.34). Exposure to indoor air pollution from solid fuel might increase depression risk.

Abstract
Although solid fuel use for cooking is linked to an increased risk for depression, there is limited evidence on the effects of cooking duration and kitchen ventilation on these associations in rural areas. Among 29 903 participants from the Henan Rural Cohort, the independent and combined associations of cooking fuel type, cooking duration, and kitchen ventilation with depressive and anxiety symptoms were examined by logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of solid fuel use for depressive and anxiety symptoms were 1.237 (1.041, 1.469) and 1.384 (1.153, 1.662), respectively. Increased cooking duration was associated with an increased prevalence of depressive symptoms (aOR: 1.098, 95% CI: 1.033, 1.166) and anxiety symptoms (aOR: 1.074, 95% CI: 1.009, 1.144). Solid fuel use and long-duration cooking associated with increased prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms were only observed in individuals without kitchen ventilation. Kitchen ventilation may attenuate the positive associations of solid fuel use and long-duration cooking with the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms, which suggested popularizing clean fuel and promoting kitchen ventilation may be effective strategies to improve mental health related to household air pollution sourced from solid fuel use and long-duration cooking.

Abstract
PURPOSE Metal and chemical exposure can cause acute and chronic respiratory diseases in humans. The purpose of this analysis was to analyze 14 types of urinary metals including mercury, uranium, tin, lead, antimony, barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, molybdenum, manganese, strontium, thallium, tungsten, six types of speciated arsenic, total arsenic and seven forms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the link with self-reported emphysema in the US adult population. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis using the 2011-2012, 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey datasets was conducted. A specialized weighted complex survey design analysis package was used in analyzing the data. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between urinary metals, arsenic, and PAHs and self-reported emphysema among all participants and among non-smokers only. Models were adjusted for lifestyle and demographic factors. RESULTS A total of 4,181 adults were analyzed. 1-Hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxypyrene, and 2 & 3-hydroxyphenanthrene were positively associated with self-reported emphysema. Positive associations were also observed in cadmium and cesium with self-reported emphysema. Among non-smokers, quantiles among 2-hydroxynaphthalene, arsenocholine, total urinary arsenic, cesium, and tin were associated with increased odds of self-reported emphysema. Quantiles among 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, cadmium, manganese, lead, antimony, thallium, and tungsten were associated with an inverse relationship with self-reported emphysema in non-smokers. CONCLUSION The study determined that six types of urinary PAHs, cadmium, and cesium are positively associated with self-reported emphysema. Certain quantiles of 2-hydroxynaphthalene, arsenocholine, total urinary arsenic, cesium, and tin are positively associated with self-reported emphysema among non-smokers.
