Associations of Contemporary Screen Time Modalities With Early Adolescent Nutrition

OBJECTIVE

To determine the associations between screen time across several contemporary screen modalities (eg, television, video games, text, video chat, social media) and adherence to the Mediterranean-DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) intervention for neurodegenerative delay (MIND) diet in early adolescents.

METHODS

We analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study of 9 to 12-year-old adolescents in the United States. Multiple linear regression analyses examined the relationship between self-reported screen time measures at baseline (year 0) and the 1-year follow-up (year 1) and caregiver-reported nutrition assessments at year 1, providing a prospective and cross-sectional analysis. Cross-sectional marginal predicted probabilities were calculated.

RESULTS

In a sample of 8267 adolescents (49.0% female, 56.9% white), mean age 10 years, total screen time increased from 3.80 h/d at year 0 to 4.61 h/d at year 1. Change in total screen time from year 0 and year 1 was associated with lower nutrition scores at year 1.

PROSPECTIVE

Screen time spent on television, video games, and videos at year 0 was associated with lower nutrition scores at year 1. Cross-sectional: Screen time spent on television, video games, videos, texting, and social media at year 1 was associated with lower MIND diet scores at year 1.

CONCLUSIONS

Both traditional (television) and several contemporary modalities of screen time are associated, prospectively and cross-sectionally, with lower overall diet quality, measured by the MIND diet nutrition score, in early adolescents. Future studies should further explore the effect of rising digital platforms and media on overall adolescent nutrition.

Loneliness in the Digital World: protocol for a co-produced ecological momentary assessment study in adolescents

INTRODUCTION

Loneliness has been identified as an important public health issue, peaking during adolescence. Previous research has suggested that social interaction is a key factor in loneliness, and positive social interaction can act as a protective factor against loneliness. However, it is unclear whether there are differing impacts of in-person and online social interaction on adolescents' loneliness and mental health. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) designs are ideally suited for better understanding these associations.

METHOD AND ANALYSIS

In the 'Loneliness in the Digital World' study, we will use a co-developed EMA design to capture daily social interactions, loneliness and mental health such as positive and negative emotions, depression and anxiety in approximately 200 adolescents aged 12-15 years. We will combine this with comprehensive information gathered from online surveys. Analysing the data using techniques such as dynamic structural equation modelling, we will examine, among other research questions, the associations between online and in-person social interaction and feelings of loneliness. The results can help inform interventions to support adolescents with high levels of loneliness and poor mental health.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

We received the ethics approval for the data collection from The Academic and Clinical Central Office for Research and Development, followed by the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine Ethics panel at University of Edinburgh, and finally reviewed by East of Scotland Research Ethics Service. The results will be disseminated through journal publications, conferences and seminar presentations and to relevant stakeholders such as teachers.

Sedentary behaviour profiles and longitudinal associations with academic performance in youth: The UP&DOWN study

The current study evaluated longitudinal associations between profile transitions of context-specific sedentary behaviour (SB) and changes in academic performance (AP) among school-aged youth. Participants were 466 children and 717 adolescents (50.8% males) aged 8-18 years (children = 7.92 ± 0.41 years; adolescents = 11.85 ± 1.53 years). Non-school SBs and AP were evaluated at baseline and two years later. General linear mixed models were implemented, controlling for age, region, parental education, body mass index, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Cross-sectionally, participants with an Educative-profile (i.e., highest scores in doing homework with/without computer and reading for fun) had higher AP when compared to other profiles. Longitudinally, males who changed from a Screen- to an Educative-profile had higher AP than males who changed from an Educative- to a Social- or Screen-SB profile (p < 0.01). No significant differences were found in females. These findings show the importance of analysing SB patterns from a qualitative perspective (i.e., context-specific for boosting school children AP) and highlighting time spent in educative as the most positive for AP, as well the need to implement interventions to reduce time on screen and social behaviours, especially targeting males.
