Abstract
Highly trained aerobic athletes progressively use most of their breathing reserve with increased exercise intensity during whole-body exercise. Additionally, females typically present proportionally smaller lungs than males. Therefore, sex, exercise intensity, and breathing reserve use likely influence the volume and time in which respiratory parameters vary between consecutive breaths during whole-body exercise. However, breath-by-breath variability has been scarcely investigated during exercise. Accordingly, we sought to investigate breath-by-breath pulmonary ventilation (V̇E), tidal volume (VT), and respiratory frequency (fR) variability during a maximal treadmill incremental exercise test in 17 females and 18 males highly trained professional endurance runners. The breath-by-breath variability was analyzed by root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) within 1-minute windows. Females had lower absolute and percent predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) than males, as well as lower height-adjusted absolute FVC than males. V̇E and VT reserve use were similar between the sexes at peak exercise. While RMSSDV̇E and RMSSDfR did not change over exercise (P > 0.05), RMSSDVT progressively decreased (P < 0.001). RMSSDVT was negatively correlated with VT reserve use only in males. Females showed lower RMSSDV̇E than males during the entire exercise test (P < 0.001). At iso-V̇E reserve use, between-sex differences in RMSSDV̇E persisted (P = 0.003). Our findings indicate that exercise intensity decreases VT variability in professional runners, which is linked to VT reserve use in males but not females. Additionally, the female sex lowers V̇E variability regardless of exercise intensity and V̇E reserve use.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of peppermint essential oil to improve the physical performance of runners in running protocol until exhaustion. METHODS In a clinical, randomized, double-blind, cross-over and controlled study, fourteen male recreational runners (37.1 ± 2.0 years; 24 ± 1.1 kg/m2; 53.1 ± 1.7 mL kg min) performed two runs to exhaustion at 70% of VO2max, after intake of 500 mL of water added with 0.05 mL of peppermint essential oil (PEO) or placebo (PLA), plus 400 mL of the drink during the initial part of the exercise. Records were made of body temperature (BT), thermal sensation (TS), thermal comfort (TC), subjective perception of effort (SPE), sweat rate (SR), and urine volume and density. RESULTS Time to exhaustion was 109.9 ± 6.9 min in PEO and 98.5 ± 6.2 min in PLA (p = 0.009; effect size: 0.826). No significant changes were observed in the values of BT, TS, TC, SPE, SR, lost body mass, and urine volume and density (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Peppermint essential oil added to water before and during a race significantly increases the time to exhaustion of recreational runners but without altering BT, TS, TC, or hydration status, so the mechanisms involved were not clarified in this study. Abstract
ABSTRACT Cycling is a growing sport worldwide since the COVID-19 pandemic. With the growing availability and interest in long distance events, professional and amateur cyclists are pushing themselves further and harder than ever before. Training and nutrition should be understood by the sports medicine professional in order to guide counseling toward proper fueling to avoid health consequences. This article reviews macronutrients and micronutrients, periodized training and nutrition, and the relevance of the ketogenic diet for endurance cyclists riding greater than 90 min.

Abstract
Our aim was to characterize fluid intake during outdoor team sport training and use generalized additive models to quantify interactions with the environment and performance. Fluid intake, body mass (BM) and internal/external training load data were recorded for male rugby union (n = 19) and soccer (n = 19) athletes before/after field training sessions throughout an 11-week preseason (357 observations). Running performance (GPS) and environmental conditions were recorded each session and generalized additive models were applied in the analysis of data. Mean body mass loss throughout all training sessions was -1.11 ± 0.63 kg (~1.3%) compared with a mean fluid intake at each session of 958 ± 476 mL during the experimental period. For sessions >110 min, when fluid intake reached ~10-19 mL·kg-1 BM the total distance increased (7.47 to 8.06 km, 7.6%; P = 0.049). Fluid intake above ~10 mL·kg-1 BM was associated with a 4.1% increase in high-speed running distance (P < 0.0001). Most outdoor team sport athletes fail to match fluid loss during training, and fluid intake is a strong predictor of running performance. Improved hydration practices during training should be beneficial and we provide a practical ingestion range to promote improved exercise capacity in outdoor team sport training sessions.

Abstract
Hemoconcentration during exercise is a well-known phenomenon, however, the extent to which dehydration is involved is unclear. In our study, the effect of dehydration on exercise-induced hemoconcentration was examined in 12 elite Hungarian kayak-canoe athletes. The changes of blood markers were examined during acute maximal workload in hydrated and dehydrated states. Dehydration was achieved by exercise, during a 120-minute extensive-aerobic preload. Our research is one of the first studies in which the changes in blood components were examined with a higher time resolution and a wider range of the measured parameters. Hydration status had no effect on the dynamics of hemoconcentration during both the hydrated (HS) and dehydrated (DHS) load, although lower maximal power output were measured after the 120-minute preload [HS Hemoglobin(Hgb)Max median 17.4 (q1 17.03; q3 17.9) g/dl vs. DHS HgbMax median 16.9 (q1 16.43; q3 17.6) g/dl (n.s); HS Hematocrit(Hct)Max 53.50 (q1 52.28; q3 54.8) % vs. DHS HctMax 51.90 (q1 50.35; q3 53.93) % (n.s)]. Thirty minutes after the maximal loading, complete hemodilution was confirmed in both exercises. Dehydration had no effect on hemoconcentration or hemodilution in the recovery period [HS HgbR30' 15.7 (q1 15.15; q3 16.05) g/dl (n.s.) vs. DHS HgbR30' 15.75 (q1 15.48; q3 16.13) g/dl (n.s.), HS HctR30' 48.15 (q1 46.5; q3 49.2) % vs. DHS HctR30' 48.25 (q1 47.48; q3 49.45) % (n.s.)], however, plasma osmolality did not follow a corresponding decrease in hemoglobin and hematocrit in the dehydrated group. Based on our data, metabolic products (glucose, lactate, sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate ion, blood urea nitrogen) induced osmolality may not play a major role in the regulation of hemoconcentration and post-exercise hemodilution. From our results, we can conclude that hemoconcentration depends mainly on the intensity of the exercise.

Abstract
Adequate hydration represents the balance between the water intake and loss and has an unambiguous significance for public health and it is essential to sustain life. The changes in electrolyte balance which occur during and after training affect on athletes health and performance. Therefore, fluid replacement with adequate mineral composition is of utmost importance. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of low mineral water from the well Sneznik-1/79 on anthropometric, functional, biochemical parameters and redox status of professional basketball players. In total, 17 male basketball players were included, during the pre-competitive mesocycle, and after the initial testing, they were randomly divided into two groups: group 1 - consumed the commercial drinking water for four weeks (n=7), and group 2 - consumed water from the well Sneznik-1/79 for four weeks (n=10). Determination of the anthropometric, functional, biochemical parameters and redox status was performed. Our results pointed out that consumption of mineral water from the well Sneznik is completely safe from the aspect of affecting various anthropometric, functional and biochemical parameters as well as systemic oxidative stress of professional athletes. In addition, existence of discretely better effects over commercial drinking water indicates that a long period of monitoring may certainly be of interest for further investigation.

Abstract
Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) was first described as water intoxication by Noakes et al. in 1985 and has become an important topic linked to several pathological conditions. However, despite progressive research, neurological disorders and even deaths due to hyponatremic encephalopathy continue to occur. Therefore, and due to the growing popularity of exercise-associated hyponatremia, this topic is of great importance for marathon runners and all professionals involved in runners' training (e.g., coaches, medical staff, nutritionists, and trainers). The present narrative review sought to evaluate the prevalence of EAH among marathon runners and to identify associated etiological and risk factors. Furthermore, the aim was to derive preventive and therapeutic action plans for marathon runners based on current evidence. The search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar using a predefined search algorithm by aggregating multiple terms (marathon run; exercise; sport; EAH; electrolyte disorder; fluid balance; dehydration; sodium concentration; hyponatremia). By this criterion, 135 articles were considered for the present study. Our results revealed that a complex interaction of different factors could cause EAH, which can be differentiated into event-related (high temperatures) and person-related (female sex) risk factors. There is variation in the reported prevalence of EAH, and two major studies indicated an incidence ranging from 7 to 15% for symptomatic and asymptomatic EAH. Athletes and coaches must be aware of EAH and its related problems and take appropriate measures for both training and competition. Coaches need to educate their athletes about the early symptoms of EAH to intervene at the earliest possible stage. In addition, individual hydration strategies need to be developed for the daily training routine, ideally in regard to sweat rate and salt losses via sweat. Future studies need to investigate the correlation between the risk factors of EAH and specific subgroups of marathon runners.

Abstract
Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between regional and total phase angle (PhA) with lower-body neuromuscular performance in young elite soccer players. Methods: Sixteen elite male soccer players (14.3 ± 1.0 years) participated in this study. Lower (LPhA)- and upper (UPhA)-hemisome PhA together with whole-body PhA (WBPhA) were measured by a bioelectrical-impedance analysis (BIA), while appendicular arm and leg lean soft tissue (ALST and LLST, respectively) were estimated. Urine osmolarity (UOsm) and urine-specific gravity (USG) were also considered. Sprints over 10 m and 20 m and countermovement jump (CMJ) tests were employed to evaluate neuromuscular performance. Results: LPhA (p = 0.003) and UOsm (p = 0.012) explained 62% of the variance in the 10 m sprint. UOsm (p = 0.001) and both LPhA (p < 0.001) and WBPhA (p = 0.024) explained 81% of the total variance in the 20 m sprint. The CMJ height was affected by LPhA (p < 0.001) and UOsm (p = 0.024), which overall explained 68% of its variance (p < 0.05), while 93% of the CMJ power variance was explained by LPhA (p < 0.001), ALST (p < 0.001), and WBPhA (p = 0.011). Conclusions: Regional PhA is a relevant and non-invasive tool to monitor lower-body neuromuscular performance in elite youth soccer. Specifically, LPhA may be favored over WBPhA as more informative.

Abstract
We compared the effect of programmed (PFI) and thirst-driven (TDFI) fluid intake on prolonged cycling performance and exercise associated muscle cramps (EAMC). Eight male endurance athletes (26 ± 6 years) completed two trials consisting of 5 h of cycling at 61% V˙O2peak followed by a 20 km time-trial (TT) in a randomized crossover sequence at 30 °C, 35% relative humidity. EAMC was assessed after the TT with maximal voluntary isometric contractions of the shortened right plantar flexors. Water intake was either programmed to limit body mass loss to 1% (PFI) or consumed based on perceived thirst (TDFI). Body mass loss reached 1.5 ± 1.0% for PFI and 2.5 ± 0.9% for TDFI (p = 0.10). Power output during the 20 km TT was higher (p < 0.05) for PFI (278 ± 41 W) than TDFI (263 ± 39 W), but the total performance time, including the breaks to urinate, was similar (p = 0.48) between conditions. The prevalence of EAMC of the plantar flexors was similar between the drinking conditions. Cyclists competing in the heat for over 5 h may benefit from PFI aiming to limit body mass loss to <2% when a high intensity effort is required in the later phase of the race and when time lost for urination is not a consideration.

Abstract
Cycling is predominantly an endurance sport in which fuel utilization for energy production relies on the availability and delivery of oxygen to exercising muscle. Nutrition and training interventions to improve endurance performance are continually evolving, but ultimately, prescription should aim to generate improvements in cycling power and velocity while prioritizing athlete health and well-being. The wide range of cycling events and the different environments in which events take place pose a variety of nutrition-related challenges for cyclists. This review addresses some of these challenges and highlights recent advancements in nutrition for cycling performance.

Abstract
It is the position of Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA) that exercise in hot and/or humid environments, or with significant clothing and/or equipment that prevents body heat loss (i.e., exertional heat stress), provides significant challenges to an athlete's nutritional status, health, and performance. Exertional heat stress, especially when prolonged, can perturb thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems. Heat acclimation or acclimatization provides beneficial adaptations and should be undertaken where possible. Athletes should aim to begin exercise euhydrated. Furthermore, preexercise hyperhydration may be desirable in some scenarios and can be achieved through acute sodium or glycerol loading protocols. The assessment of fluid balance during exercise, together with gastrointestinal tolerance to fluid intake, and the appropriateness of thirst responses provide valuable information to inform fluid replacement strategies that should be integrated with event fuel requirements. Such strategies should also consider fluid availability and opportunities to drink, to prevent significant under- or overconsumption during exercise. Postexercise beverage choices can be influenced by the required timeframe for return to euhydration and co-ingestion of meals and snacks. Ingested beverage temperature can influence core temperature, with cold/icy beverages of potential use before and during exertional heat stress, while use of menthol can alter thermal sensation. Practical challenges in supporting athletes in teams and traveling for competition require careful planning. Finally, specific athletic population groups have unique nutritional needs in the context of exertional heat stress (i.e., youth, endurance/ultra-endurance athletes, and para-sport athletes), and specific adjustments to nutrition strategies should be made for these population groups.

Abstract
Physiological strain during exercise is increased by mild dehydration (∼1%-3% body mass loss). This response may be sex-dependent, but there are no direct comparative data in this regard. This review aimed to develop a framework for future research by exploring the potential impact of sex on thermoregulatory and cardiac strain associated with exercise-induced dehydration. Sex-based comparisons were achieved by comparing trends from studies that implemented similar experimental protocols but recruited males and females separately. This revealed a higher core temperature (Tc) in response to exercise-induced dehydration in both sexes; however, it seemingly occurred at a lower percent body mass loss in females. Although less clear, similar trends existed for cardiac strain. The average female may have a lower body water volume per body mass compared with males, and therefore the same percent body mass loss between the sexes may represent a larger portion of total body water in females potentially posing a greater physiological strain. In addition, the rate at which Tc increases at exercise onset might be faster in females and induce a greater thermoregulatory challenge earlier into exercise. The Tc response at exercise onset is associated with lower sweating rates in females, which is commonly attributed to sex differences in metabolic heat production. However, a reduced sweat gland sensitivity to stimuli, lower fluid output per sweat gland, and sex hormones promoting fluid retention in females may also contribute. In conclusion, the limited evidence suggests that sex-based differences exist in thermoregulatory and cardiac strain associated with exercise-induced dehydration, and this warrants future investigations.

Abstract
Preserving the hydration status means to balance daily fluids and salt losses with gains, where the losses depend on several physiological and environmental factors. Especially for athletes, these losses could be relevant and negatively influence the performance: therefore, their hydro-saline status must be preserved with personalized pre- and rehydration plans all along the performance period. Scientific literature in this field is mainly dedicated to artificial sport drinks. Different territories in most world areas are rich in drinking natural mineral spring waters with saline compositions that reflect their geological origin and that are used for human health (often under medical prescription). However, scarce scientific attention has been dedicated to the use of these waters for athletes. We therefore reviewed the existing literature from the innovative viewpoint of matching spring water mineral compositions with different athletic performances and their hydro-saline requirements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Climate change is set to exacerbate occupational heat strain, the combined effect of environmental and internal heat stress on the body, threatening human health and wellbeing. Therefore, identifying effective, affordable, feasible and sustainable solutions to mitigate the negative effects on worker health and productivity, is an increasingly urgent need. OBJECTIVES To systematically identify and evaluate methods that mitigate occupational heat strain in order to provide scientific-based guidance for practitioners. METHODS An umbrella review was conducted in biomedical databases employing the following eligibility criteria: 1) ambient temperatures > 28 °C or hypohydrated participants, 2) healthy adults, 3) reported psychophysiological (thermal comfort, heart rate or core temperature) and/or performance (physical or cognitive) outcomes, 4) written in English, and 5) published before November 6, 2019. A second search for original research articles was performed to identify interventions of relevance but lacking systematic reviews. All identified interventions were independently evaluated by all co-authors on four point scales for effectiveness, cost, feasibility and environmental impact. RESULTS Following screening, 36 systematic reviews fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The most effective solutions at mitigating occupational heat strain were wearing specialized cooling garments, (physiological) heat acclimation, improving aerobic fitness, cold water immersion, and applying ventilation. Although air-conditioning and cooling garments in ideal settings provide best scores for effectiveness, the limited applicability in certain industrial settings, high economic cost and high environmental impact are drawbacks for these solutions. However, (physiological) acclimatization, planned breaks, shading and optimized clothing properties are attractive alternative solutions when economic and ecological sustainability aspects are included in the overall evaluation. DISCUSSION Choosing the most effective solution or combinations of methods to mitigate occupational heat strain will be scenario-specific. However, this paper provides a framework for integrating effectiveness, cost, feasibility (indoors and outdoor) and ecologic sustainability to provide occupational health and safety professionals with evidence-based guidelines.

Abstract
The impact of alterations in hydration status on human physiology and performance responses during exercise is one of the oldest research topics in sport and exercise nutrition. This body of work has mainly focussed on the impact of reduced body water stores (i.e. hypohydration) on these outcomes, on the whole demonstrating that hypohydration impairs endurance performance, likely via detrimental effects on a number of physiological functions. However, an important consideration, that has received little attention, is the methods that have traditionally been used to investigate how hypohydration affects exercise outcomes, as those used may confound the results of many studies. There are two main methodological limitations in much of the published literature that perhaps make the results of studies investigating performance outcomes difficult to interpret. First, subjects involved in studies are generally not blinded to the intervention taking place (i.e. they know what their hydration status is), which may introduce expectancy effects. Second, most of the methods used to induce hypohydration are both uncomfortable and unfamiliar to the subjects, meaning that alterations in performance may be caused by this discomfort, rather than hypohydration per se. This review discusses these methodological considerations and provides an overview of the small body of recent work that has attempted to correct some of these methodological issues. On balance, these recent blinded hydration studies suggest hypohydration equivalent to 2–3% body mass decreases endurance cycling performance in the heat, at least when no/little fluid is ingested.

Abstract
Abstract
Adequate hydration represents the balance between the water intake and loss and has an unambiguous significance for public health and it is essential to sustain life. The changes in electrolyte balance which occur during and after training affect on athletes health and performance. Therefore, fluid replacement with adequate mineral composition is of utmost importance. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of low mineral water from the well Sneznik-1/79 on anthropometric, functional, biochemical parameters and redox status of professional basketball players. In total, 17 male basketball players were included, during the pre-competitive mesocycle, and after the initial testing, they were randomly divided into two groups: group 1 – consumed the commercial drinking water for four weeks (n = 7), and group 2 – consumed water from the well Sneznik-1/79 for four weeks (n = 10).
Determination of the anthropometric, functional, biochemical parameters and redox status was performed. Our results pointed out that consumption of mineral water from the well Sneznik is completely safe from the aspect of affecting various anthropometric, functional and biochemical parameters as well as systemic oxidative stress of professional athletes. In addition, existence of discretely better effects over commercial drinking water indicates that a long period of monitoring may certainly be of interest for further investigation.

Abstract
Electrolyzed hydrogen water (EHW) is generated at a cathode. It contains many hydrogen molecules with high alkaline properties. The physiological effects of ingesting EHW during endurance exercise are unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of ingesting EHW during endurance exercise in a heated environment on body fluid balance and exercise performance. Twelve triathletes (20.0 ± 1.3 years, 171 ± 6 cm, 60.6 ± 3.9 kg, V̇O2max 67.1 ± 3.8 mL/kg/min) performed pedaling exercise for 60 min at 65% of V̇O2max consuming either purified water (CON trial) or EHW (EHW trial) and then conducted an incremental pedaling test. Blood parameters, tissue temperature, and respiratory variables were determined during 60 min of exercise. The time to exhaustion (TTE) during the incremental pedaling test was also determined. Body weights were 1.1 ± 0.4 kg lower after exercise, with no significant differences between trials. Plasma volume and serum osmolality and blood sodium and potassium concentrations significantly changed with exercise, but no significant differences were observed between trials. The pH, blood lactate and bicarbonate concentrations, and changes in skin and muscle temperature did not significantly differ between the two trials. Energy expenditure during exercise was significantly (P = 0.04) lower in the EHW trial (13.2 ± 0.5 kcal/min) than in the CON trial (13.7 ± 0.4 kcal/min). TTE did not significantly differ between the trials. In conclusion, EHW ingestion during endurance exercise in a heated environment decreased energy expenditure but did not affect body fluid balance or exercise performance. Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effects of dehydration on metabolic and neuromuscular functionality performance during a cycling exercise. Ten male subjects (age 23.4 ± 2.7 years; body weight 74.6 ± 10.4 kg; height 177.3 ± 4.6 cm) cycled at 65% VO2max for 60 min followed by a time-to-trial (TT) at 95% VO2max, in two different conditions: dehydration (DEH) and hydration (HYD). The bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and body weight measurements were performed to assess body fluid changes. Heart rate (HR), energy cost, minute ventilation, oxygen uptake, and metabolic power were evaluated during the experiments. In addition, neuromuscular activity of the vastus medialis and biceps femoris muscles were assessed by surface electromyography. After exercise induced dehydration, the bioimpedance vector significantly lengthens along the major axis of the BIVA graph, in conformity with the body weight change (-2%), that indicates a fluid loss. Metabolic and neuromuscular parameters significantly increased during TT at 95% VO2max with respect to constant workload at 65% of VO2max. Dehydration during a one-hour cycling test and subsequent TT caused a significant increase in HR, while neuromuscular function showed a lower muscle activation in dehydration conditions on both constant workload and on TT. Furthermore, a significant difference between HYD and DEH for TT duration was found.

Effect of Thirst-Driven Fluid Intake on 1 H Cycling Time-Trial Performance in Trained Endurance Athletes. Sports (Basel) 2019; 7:sports7100223. Abstract
A meta-analysis demonstrated that programmed fluid intake (PFI) aimed at fully replacing sweat losses during a 1 h high-intensity cycling exercise impairs performance compared with no fluid intake (NFI). It was reported that thirst-driven fluid intake (TDFI) may optimize cycling performance, compared with when fluid is consumed more than thirst dictates. However, how TDFI, compared with PFI and NFI, impacts performance during a 1 h cycling time-trial performance remains unknown. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of NFI, TDFI and PFI on 1 h cycling time-trial performance. Using a randomized, crossover and counterbalanced protocol, 9 (7 males and 2 females) trained endurance athletes (30 ± 9 years; Peak V · O2∶ 59 ± 8 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed three 1 h cycling time-trials (30 °C, 50% RH) with either NFI, TDFI or PFI designed to maintain body mass (BM) at ~0.5% of pre-exercise BM. Body mass loss reached 2.9 ± 0.4, 2.2 ± 0.3 and 0.6 ± 0.2% with NFI, TDFI and PFI, respectively. Heart rate, rectal and mean skin temperatures and ratings of perceived exertion and of abdominal discomfort diverged marginally among trials. Mean distance completed (NFI: 35.6 ± 1.9 km; TDFI: 35.8 ± 2.0; PFI: 35.7 ± 2.0) and, hence, average power output maintained during the time-trials did not significantly differ among trials, and the impact of both PFI and TDFI vs. NFI was deemed trivial or unclear. These findings indicate that neither PFI nor TDFI are likely to offer any advantage over NFI during a 1 h cycling time-trial.

Abstract
The health and performance of ultra-endurance athletes is dependent on avoidance of performance limiting hypohydration while also avoiding the potentially fatal consequences of exercise-associated hyponatremia due to overhydration. In this work, key factors related to maintaining proper hydration during ultra-endurance activities are discussed. In general, proper hydration need not be complicated and has been well demonstrated to be achieved by simply drinking to thirst and consuming a typical race diet during ultra-endurance events without need for supplemental sodium. As body mass is lost from oxidation of stored fuel, and water supporting the intravascular volume is generated from endogenous fuel oxidation and released with glycogen oxidation, the commonly promoted hydration guidelines of avoiding body mass losses of >2% can result in overhydration during ultra-endurance activities. Thus, some body mass loss should occur during prolonged exercise, and appropriate hydration can be maintained by drinking to the dictates of thirst.

Abstract
Functional beverages represent a palatable and efficient way to hydrate and reintegrate electrolytes, carbohydrates, and other nutrients employed and/or lost during physical training and/or competitions. Bodily hydration during sporting activity is one of the best indicators of health in athletes and can be a limiting factor for sport performance. Indeed, dehydration strongly decreases athletic performance until it is a risk to health. As for other nutrients, each of them is reported to support athletes' needs both during the physical activity and/or in the post-workout. In this study, we review the current knowledge of macronutrient-enriched functional beverages in sport taking into account the athletes' health, sports performance, and recovery.

Abstract
It is not unusual for those participating in ultra-endurance (> 4 hr) events to develop varying degrees of either hypohydration or hyperhydration. Yet, it is important for ultra-endurance athletes to avoid the performance limiting and potentially fatal consequences of these conditions. During short periods of exercise (< 1 hr), trivial effects on the relationship between body mass change and hydration status result from body mass loss due to oxidation of endogenous fuel stores, and water supporting the intravascular volume being generated from endogenous fuel oxidation and released with glycogen oxidation. However, these effects have meaningful implications during prolonged exercise. In fact, body mass loses well over 2% may be required during some ultra-endurance activities to avoid hyperhydration. Therefore, the typical hydration guidelines to avoid more than 2% body mass loss do not apply in ultra-endurance activities and can potentially result in hyperhydration. Fortunately, achieving the balance of proper hydration during ultra-endurance activities need not be complicated and has been well demonstrated to generally be achieved by simply drinking to thirst and avoiding excessive sodium supplementation with intention of replacing all sodium losses during the exercise.

Abstract
Background Athletes commonly consume insufficient fluid and electrolytes just prior to, or during training and competition. Unlike non-athletes or athletes who do not engage in frequent rigorous and prolonged training sessions, “hard trainers” may require additional sodium and better benefit from a hydration plan tailored to their individual physiology. The purpose of this randomized cross-over study was to determine whether a hydration plan based off of an athlete’s sweat rate and sodium loss improves anaerobic and neurocognitive performance during a moderate to hard training session as well as heart rate recovery from this session. Methods Collegiate athletes who were injury free and could exercise at ≥ 75% of their maximum heart rate for a minimum of 45 min were recruited for this randomized, cross-over study. After completing a questionnaire assessing hydration habits, participants were randomized either to a prescription hydration plan (PHP), which considered sweat rate and sodium loss or instructed to follow their normal ad libitum hydration habits (NHP) during training. Attention and awareness, as well as lower body anaerobic power (standing long jump) were assessed immediately before and after a moderate to hard training session of ≥ 45 min. Heart rate recovery was also measured. After a washout period of 7 days, the PHP group repeated the training bout with their normal hydration routine, while the NHP group were provided with a PHP plan and were assessed as previously described. Results Fifteen athletes from three different sports, aged 20 ± 0.85 years, participated in this study. Most participants reported feeling somewhat or very dehydrated after a typical training session. Compared to their NHP, participants following a PHP jumped 4.53 ± 3.80 in. farther, tracked moving objects 0.36 ± 0.60 m/second faster, and exhibited a faster heart rate recovery following a moderate to hard training session of 45–120 min in duration. Conclusion A tailored hydration plan, based on an athlete’s fluid and sodium loss has the potential to improve anaerobic power, attention and awareness, and heart rate recovery time.
