Hydrogeochemical characteristics and air quality risks associated with gold mining operations in Egypt using geochemical modeling and risk indices

The success of industrial operations depends on the effective identification, appraisal, and mitigation of possible hazards and associated environmental concerns. This report provides a complete review of environmental management techniques at the Sukari Gold Mine (SGM), located in the southeastern desert of Egypt. Extensive environmental measurements were taken to assess air and water quality, identify hazards, and analyze risks on the SGM premises. Air quality and noise intensity levels were measured at 39 places around the mine's working region. The findings found noncompliance with the Egyptian Environmental Law's (EEL4/94) noise exposure limitations, with the Power Generator House having the maximum noise levels at 107 dB. Remedial measures such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and exposure limit reduction strategies are being considered to address elevated noise levels. Measurements of particulate matter (PM10) and noxious gases (e.g., CO, SO2, NO2, HCN, and NH3) were conducted in workplace and ambient environments. Elevated PM10 concentrations were particularly concerning in underground regions, forcing the deployment of water depression techniques and improved PPE measures. While gas emissions from most activities remained under regulatory limits, select zones showed hydrogen cyanide (HCN) levels that exceeded permitted thresholds, necessitating specific control actions. Using hazard index (HI) and risk rating assessments, this study found different risk profiles across SGM's workplaces, focusing on high-risk regions for focused intervention. Additionally, a water assessment near a Tailing Storage Facility (TSF) was conducted to monitor the impact of mining activities on groundwater quality. The study revealed that groundwater in the region belongs to the Na-K-Cl-SO4 and Ca-Mg-Cl-SO4 water classes, with potential degradation attributed to high mineralization processes induced by aquifer materials and seawater intrusion. The findings underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring, control measures, and implementation of programs to ensure environmental sustainability and minimize risks associated with mining activities in the Sukari Gold Mines. This research highlights the imperative of continuous monitoring, proactive control measures, and the implementation of environmental initiatives to ensure the sustainability of mining operations within the Sukari Gold Mines.

Receptor model-based sources and risk assessment of metals in sediment of the coastal construction-oriented aquatic system in Bangladesh

Metal pollution in sediment from construction areas raises ecological and health concerns, yet source-based sediment pollution in Bangladesh remains understudied. Our investigation focused on fifteen locations in the Kohelia River and the coastal regions near the Matarbari projects (Matarbari Power Plant, Matarbari Deep Seaport), assessing metal concentrations' sources and impacts on ecology and human well-being. Sediment quality indices indicated high Cd and Cr contamination, with sites near Matarbari projects being the most polluted. The positive matrix factorization model identified three anthropogenic sources and mixed sources. Matarbari projects contributed significantly to As (67.9 %), Mn (50.25 %), Cd (48.35 %), and Cr (41.0 %), while ship-breaking yards contributed Fe (58.0 %), Zn (55.5 %), Pb (53.8 %), and Cu (36.1 %). Ecological indices showed different impacts on aquatic life from metal pollution, but cancer risk levels stayed below the threshold set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. These findings underscore the need for targeted measures to address metal pollution.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination and Health Risk Associated with Cultivated Vegetables along Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, Bangladesh

The purpose of this research work is to evaluate the degree of eight heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni) contamination and health risks of three regularly consumed vegetables (papaya, bottle gourd, and esculent) near one of Bangladesh's busiest roadways, the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The heavy metal concentrations in 45 vegetable samples were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). These samples were collected from five different sampling sites based on various land use patterns adjacent to the highway. The average concentrations (mg/kg) of Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, and Ni were found to be 9.86, 246.8, 16.9, 28.0, 9.02, and 2.02, respectively, for papaya; 14.9, 281.2, 387.6, 49.0, 10.1, and 2.92, respectively, for bottle gourd; and 17.6, 183.4, 107.2, 80.7, 7.98, and 2.34, respectively, for esculent. The mean concentrations of Cr, Zn, and Mn in papaya, bottle gourd, and esculent were higher than the acceptable limit. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between Fe-Cu, Zn-Fe, Cu-Fe, and Fe-Zn in papaya; Cu-Zn, Fe-Cr, Zn-Ni, and Cr-Fe in bottle gourd; and Mn-Cr, Mn-Ni, Mn-Fe, and Cr-Ni in esculent, thereby indicating their common anthropogenic sources like agricultural activities, waste from the commercial area, filling station, and vehicular emissions. Health risk assessment through target hazard quotient (THQ) revealed the highest THQ of 9.52 for Cr in bottle gourd, which poses a high non-carcinogenic health risk to the localities upon the intake of these contaminated vegetables. Target cancer risk (TCR) was found to be highest for Cr in papaya (0.013) and bottle gourd (0.014). TCR trends were found for Cr in the following order: bottle gourd > esculent > papaya. This study contributed the greatest concern for both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health impacts through ingesting contaminated vegetables.

Experimental and pharmacoinformatic approaches unveil the neuropharmacological and analgesic potential of chloroform fraction of Roktoshirinchi (Achyranthes ferruginea Roxb.)

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Achyranthes ferruginea (A. ferruginea) Roxb. is a common plant used in traditional medicine in Asia and Africa. It has a variety of local names, including "Gulmanci" in Nigeria, "Dangar" in Pakistan, "Thola" in Ethiopia, and "Roktoshirinchi" in Bangladesh. It is edible and has several ethnomedical uses for a wide range of illnesses, including hysteria, dropsy, constipation, piles, boils, asthma, and shigellosis. However, the neuropharmacological and analgesic potential of A. ferruginea remains uninvestigated.

AIM OF THE STUDY

To assess the neuropharmacological and analgesic potential of A. ferruginea through a multifaceted approach encompassing both experimental and computational models.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Methanol was used to extract the leaves of A. ferruginea. It was then fractionated with low to high polar solvents (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and water) to get different fractions, including chloroform fraction (CLF). The study selected CLF at different doses and conducted advanced chemical element and proximate analyses, as well as phytochemical profiling using GC-MS. Toxicological studies were done at 300 μg per rat per day for 14 days. Cholinesterase inhibitory potential was checked using an in-vitro colorimetric assay. Acetic acid-induced writhing (AAWT) and formalin-induced licking tests (FILT) were used to assess anti-nociceptive effects. The forced swim test (FST), tail suspension test (TST), elevated plus maze (EPM), hole board test (HBT), and light and dark box test (LDB) were among the behavioral tests used to assess depression and anxiolytic activity. Network pharmacology-based analysis was performed on selected compounds using the search tool for interacting chemicals-5 (STITCH 5), Swiss target prediction tool, and search tool for the retrieval of interacting genes and proteins (STRING) database to link their role with genes involved in neurological disorders through gene ontology and reactome analysis.

RESULTS

Qualitative chemical element analysis revealed the presence of 15 elements, including Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, and Zn. The moisture content, ash value, and organic matter were found to be 11.12, 11.03, and 88.97%, respectively. GC-MS data revealed that the CLF possesses 25 phytoconstituents. Toxicological studies suggested the CLF has no effects on normal growth, hematological and biochemical parameters, or cellular organs after 14 days at 300 μg per rat. The CLF markedly reduced the activity of both acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase (IC50: 56.22 and 13.22 μg/mL, respectively). Promising dose-dependent analgesic activity (p < 0.05) was observed in chemically-induced pain models. The TST and FST showed a dose-dependent substantial reduction in immobility time due to the CLF. Treatment with CLF notably increased the number of open arm entries and time spent in the EPM test at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w. The CLF showed significant anxiolytic activity at 200 mg/kg b.w. in the HBT test, whereas a similar activity was observed at 400 mg/kg b.w. in the EPM test. A notable increase in the amount of time spent in the light compartment was observed in the LDB test by mice treated with CLF, suggesting an anxiolytic effect. A network pharmacology study demonstrated the relationship between the phytochemicals and a number of targets, such as PPARA, PPARG, CHRM1, and HTR2, which are connected to the shown bioactivities.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated the safety of A. ferruginea and its efficacy in attenuating cholinesterase inhibitory activity, central and peripheral pain, anxiety, and depression, warranting further exploration of its therapeutic potential.

Assessing metal(loid)s-Induced long-term spatiotemporal health risks in Coastal Regions, Bay of Bengal: A chemometric study

Despite sporadic and irregular studies on heavy metal(loid)s health risks in water, fish, and soil in the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal, no chemometric approaches have been applied to assess the human health risks comprehensively. This review aims to employ chemometric analysis to evaluate the long-term spatiotemporal health risks of metal(loid)s e.g., Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, As, Cr, Pb, Cu, and Ni in coastal water, fish, and soils from 2003 to 2023. Across coastal parts, studies on metal(loid)s were distributed with 40% in the southeast, 28% in the south-central, and 32% in the southwest regions. The southeastern area exhibited the highest contamination levels, primarily due to elevated Zn content (156.8 to 147.2 mg/L for Mn in water, 15.3 to 13.2 mg/kg for Cu in fish, and 50.6 to 46.4 mg/kg for Ni in soil), except for a few sites in the south-central region. Health risks associated with the ingestion of Fe, As, and Cd (water), Ni, Cr, and Pb (fish), and Cd, Cr, and Pb (soil) were identified, with non-carcinogenic risks existing exclusively through this route. Moreover, As, Cr, and Ni pose cancer risks for adults and children via ingestion in the southeastern region. Overall non-carcinogenic risks emphasized a significantly higher risk for children compared to adults, with six, two-, and six-times higher health risks through ingestion of water, fish, and soils along the southeastern coast. The study offers innovative sustainable management strategies and remediation policies aimed at reducing metal(loid)s contamination in various environmental media along coastal Bangladesh.

Origin, spatial distribution, sediment contamination, ecological and health risk evaluation of trace metals in sediments of ship breaking area of Bangladesh

Eleven trace metals (Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, As, Pb, and Ag) in sediments of Bangladesh's ship breaking area were measured by an atomic absorption spectrometer to determine origin, contamination extent, spatial distributions, and associated ecological and human health hazards. This study found considerable quantities of Pb, Cd, Mn, Zn, and Cu when compared with standards and high levels of Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, As, and Ag contamination according to pollution evaluation indices. Different indices indicate most of the sampling sites were highly polluted. However, spatial distribution maps indicate that trace metals were predominantly deposited in the northern and southern region. The ecological risk index revealed that Cd has the highest while Pb and As had moderate risk. Based on the health index values, Zn for both adults and children were higher than the safe limit while Mn, Pb, Cr, As, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Co for children were close to the threshold. The mean total carcinogenic risk values of Cr, As, and Ni for children and Ni for adults exceeded the permissible threshold. The cancer risk possibilities were further assessed using Monte Carlo simulation. Most trace metals have anthropogenic origins, which were attributed to ship breaking activities.

Cadmium and lead accumulation in important food crops due to wastewater irrigation: Pollution index and health risks assessment

The contamination of farm soils with heavy metals (HMs) has raised significant concerns due to the increased bioavailability and accumulation of HMs in agricultural food crops. To address this issue, a survey experiment was conducted in the suburbs of Multan and Faisalabad to investigate the spatial distribution, bioaccumulation, translocation, and health risks of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in agricultural crops. The results show a considerable concentration of Cd and Pb in soils irrigated with wastewater, even though these levels were below the permissible limits in water and soil matrices. The pollution index for Cd was mostly greater than 1 at the selected sites, indicating its accumulation in soil over time due to wastewater irrigation. Conversely, the pollution index for Pb was below 1 at all sites. Among the plants, Zea mays accumulated the highest concentration of Cd and Pb. The translocation factor from soil to root was highest for Brassica olearecea (7.037 for Cd) and Zea mays (6.383 for Pb). The target hazard quotient (THQ) value of Cd exceeded the non-carcinogenic limit for most vegetables. The highest value was found in Allium cepa (5.256) and the lowest in Allium sativum (0.040). In contrast, the THQ level of Pb was below the non-carcinogenic limit for most vegetables, except for Allium cepa (1.479), Solanum lycopersicum (1.367), and Solanum tuberosum (1.326). The study highlights that Allium cepa poses the highest health risk for humans, while Medicago sativa poses the highest risk for animals due to Cd and Pb contamination. These results underscore the urgent need for effective measures to mitigate the health risks associated with HM contamination in crops and soils.

Toxicity risks associated with heavy metals to fish species in the Transboundary River - Linked Ramsar Conservation Site of Tanguar Haor, Bangladesh

The presence of trace metals in aquatic ecosystems can have detrimental effects on fish survival. The Tanguar haor, a Ramsar conservation wetland, receives sediment and water from multiple transboundary rivers. However, there have been limited studies on the metal concentrations in fish species in this sediment-rich wetland. This study aimed to analyze the concentrations of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in water, sediment, and fish tissues. Higher concentrations of Cd and Pb were found in the water and sediment. All these metals were detected in eight fish species, including benthic and pelagic species. Among them, Systomus sarana, a pelagic fish that also consumes benthic organisms, exhibited a higher metal pollution index than other fish, particularly benthic species. The release of higher metal concentrations from sediment into the water has the potential to impact the accumulation of metals in fish. SYNOPSIS: This study on metal concentrations in fish species will aid policymaking on ecotoxicology research for transboundary river-connected wetlands.

Chromium and arsenic bioaccumulation and biomass potential of pink morning glory (Ipomoea carnea Jacq.)

Soil contamination with heavy metals and metalloids is a global concern nowadays. Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable way of mitigating such contamination by utilizing the plants' ability to accumulate, sequester, and stabilize elements. Biomass-producing plants may outperform hyperaccumulators in terms of total elemental removal and offer more cost-effectiveness through their usable biomass. Ipomoea carnea is a wild plant in the Asian region. It is resilient, spreads rapidly in a wide range of soil conditions, and has a high potential for biomass feedstock. In this work, we have tested this plant species for its growth performance and accumulation characteristics of Cr and As. In a pot experiment, the plants could easily grow from rootless stem segments in 2 weeks when garden soils are treated with 100-500 ppm of Cr and 20-300 ppm of As. Plant growth reduction was little at the moderate level of these elements, with a significant accumulation of elements in 45 days. Within this time, in the stems and leaves, the Cr concentrations were found to be 49 and 39 ppm, respectively, when treated with 500 ppm of Cr, whereas the As concentrations were obtained as 83 and 28 ppm, respectively, for the treatment with 300 ppm of As. To estimate the biomass production potential, the plant was grown with a density of 80,000 per ha under normal field conditions (without metal stress). At the harvest, the plants consisted of 80% stems, 11% leaves, and 9% belowground portions on a dry weight basis. The dry weight of stems, leaves, and belowground parts was 31.3%, 17.9%, and 23.7%, respectively. Overall, the estimated biomass was 25.8 Mg/ha/year from three harvests. The ability to regrow from the basal part makes it useful for continuous sequestration of toxic elements over multiple harvests. Our results show that I. carnea could lower Cr and As from contaminated soils and potentially a phytoremediation candidate considering accumulation rate and high amount of usable biomass production.

Toxic effects of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and tetracycline (TC) on the growth and development of Triticum aestivum: A meta-analysis

The environmental issue of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and tetracycline (TC) contamination in cereal crops has become a growing concern worldwide. An in-depth understanding of this issue would be of importance to promote effective management strategies for heavy metals and antibiotics worldwide. The present study was conducted to assess the toxic effects of heavy metals (Cd, Pb) and antibiotics (TC) on Triticum aestivum (T. aestivum, common wheat) based on studies conducted in the past 22 years. Data pertaining to the growth and development of T. aestivum were extracted and analyzed from 89 publications spanning from 2000 to 2022. Our results showed that Pb, Cd and TC significantly reduced growth and development by 11 %, 9 %, and 5 %, respectively. Additionally, significant accumulation of Cd (42 %) and Pb (17 %) was observed in T. aestivum samples, although there was little change in TC accumulation, which showed limited absorption, accumulation, and translocation of TC in wheat plants. Pb had the greatest impact on the yield of T. aestivum, followed by Cd, while TC had no apparent effect. Furthermore, exposure to Cd, Pb and TC reduced the photosynthetic rate due to chlorophyll reduction, with Cd having the most pronounced effect (58 %), followed by Pb (37 %) and TC (8 %). Cd exposure also significantly enhanced gaseous exchange (37 %) compared to TC and Pb, which reduced gaseous exchange by 4 % and 10 %, respectively. However, the treatments with TC (>50-100 mgL-1), Pb (>1000-2000 mg L-1) and Cd (>500-1000 mg L-1) increased the defense system of T. aestivum samples by 38 %, 15 %, and 11 %, respectively. The obtained findings have significant implications for risk assessment, pollution prevention, and remediation strategies to address soil contamination from Pb, Cd and TC in farmland.

Assessment of groundwater vulnerability for seawater intrusion using DRASTIC model in coastal area at Patuakhali District, Bangladesh

Seawater intrusion is a growing concern for coastal regions in Bangladesh. Overexploitation of groundwater, low rainfall, a high rate of evaporation, rising sea level, cyclones, storm surges, and shrimp cultivation are the causes of seawater intrusion that polluted the groundwater near the coastal area. High values of EC, TDS, Na+, and Cl- ions in groundwater indicate the seawater intrusion. Piper's Trilinear and Durov diagrams of groundwater indicated that most gathered groundwater show predominantly Na-Cl-type of water. Based on the USSL diagram, it is observed that the salinity of the study area is medium to high and the alkalinity is medium to very high. Also, in view of the Wilcox outline, most of the samples in the area of interest are permissible to doubtful, and doubtful to unsuitable. Chloride is moderately correlated with Na+ (R2 = 0.590) and poorly correlated with (HCO3-  + CO32-) (R2 = 0.128), which indicates seawater intrusion. According to a comparison of the levels of Fe and Mn in the groundwater of the study area with those recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Department of the Environment (DOE), twenty-two out of thirty-one samples exceed the acceptable limit for Fe and thirty out of thirty-one samples fall within the acceptable limit for Mn. The calculated water quality index reveals that most samples are of low drinking water quality. The research area's poor water type is found in the north-central and southern parts. The WQI geographic variation map reveals that the study's water has a WQI of more than 100, making it unsuitable for consumption. The final seawater intrusion vulnerability map clearly identifies the moderate to highly vulnerable zone of the study area using DRASTIC index parameters. DRASTIC index parameters revealed that some portions of the northwestern part of the sample area show a moderately vulnerable zone. And the rest of the sampling area indicates the highly vulnerable zone.

Heavy metals in popularly sold branded cigarettes in Bangladesh and associated health hazards from inhalation exposure

Tobacco products are widely recognized as a major contributor to death. Cigarette smoke contains several toxic chemicals including heavy metals particulate causing high health risks. However, limited information has been available on the health risks associated with the heavy metals in cigarettes commonly sold in the Bangladeshi market. This study evaluated the concentrations and potential health risks posed by ten concerned heavy metals in ten widely consumed cigarette brands in Bangladesh using an atomic absorption spectrometer. The concentration (mg/kg) ranges of heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Co, Ni, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn vary between 0.46-1.05, 0.55-1.03, 0.80-1.2, 0.22-0.40, 0.46-0.78, 2.59-3.03, 436.8-762.7, 115.8-184.4, 146.6-217.7, and 34.0-42.7, respectively. We assume that the heavy metals content among cigarette brands is varied due to the differences in the source of tobacco they use for cigarette preparation. The carcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals follow the order of Cr > Co > Cd > As > Ni > Pb, while the non-carcinogenic risks for Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn were greater than unity (HQ > 1), except for Fe. The existence of toxic heavy metals in cigarette tobacco may thus introduce noticeable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health impacts accompanying inhalation exposure. This study provides the first comprehensive report so far on heavy metal concentration and associated health risks in branded cigarettes commonly sold in Bangladesh. Hence, this data and the information provided can serve as a baseline as well as a reference for future research and have potential implications for policy and legislation in Bangladesh.

Effect of citric acid on phytoextraction potential of Cucurbita pepo, Lagenaria siceraria, and Raphanus sativus plants exposed to multi-metal stress

Phytoextraction is a novel technique that involves using plants to remove heavy metals from contaminated soils. An outdoor pot experiment was designed to evaluate the phytoextraction potential of three plant species Cucurbita pepo, Lagenaria siceraria, and Raphanus sativus in soil contaminated with multiple metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) under the application of citric acid. The results showed that Raphanus sativus, out of all the studied plants, had the highest root and shoot dry weight and the capacity to accumulate all heavy metals at higher concentrations except for Cu. The application of citric acid into the polluted soil significantly increased plant growth, biomass, and heavy metal uptake. High bioconcentration values indicate that Raphanus sativus is a promising plant for absorbing and accumulating Cd and Ni from the soil. The maximum values of bioconcentration were also observed by the application of citric acid. The values of metal translocation from the root to the shoot were varied by plant species and the citric acid application. Regarding the biomass, metal content, as well as removal metal percentage values, it became apparent that the Raphanus sativus plant was the most effective crop in removing heavy metals from multi-metal contaminated Soil. Generally, these findings emphasize that the application of citric acid could be a useful approach to assist Cd and Ni phytoextraction by Raphanus sativus plants. When these plants are growing as vegetable crops, more attention should be given to evaluating the heavy metal content in them, especially when adding citric acid to their soil through fertigation systems to avoid food chain contamination.

Human exposures to multiple water sources in the southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh: water quality, pollution sources, and preliminary health risks appraisals

The coastal areas of Bangladesh have poor accessibility to fresh drinking water and the groundwater is not suitable for drinking, cooking, and other domestic uses due to high levels of salinity and potentially toxic elements. The current study focuses on understanding of the distribution of some physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, EC, TDS, and salinity) and chemical elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Co, Pb, As, Cr, Cd, and Ni) with health perspective in drinking water from the southwestern coastal area of Bangladesh. The physicochemical properties of the water samples were examined with a multiparameter meter, while the elemental concentrations were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometer. Water quality index (WQI) and irrigation indices were utilized to determine the drinking water quality and irrigation feasibility, respectively, whereas hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard index (HI) were used to assess the probable pathways and the associated potential risks to human health. The concentrations of some toxic elements in measured samples were relatively higher compared to drinking water guidelines, indicating that ground and surface water are not apt for drinking and/or domestic uses. The multivariate statistical approaches linked the source of the pollutants in the studied water body mostly to the geogenic origin including saline water intrusion. WQI values ranged from 18 to 430, reflecting excellent to unsuitable categories of water quality. The assessment of human health risks due to exposure to contaminated water demonstrated both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks in the exposed residents of the study area. Therefore, appropriate long-term coastal area management strategies should be adopted in the study region for environmental sustainability. The findings of this research will be supportive in understanding the actual situation of fresh drinking water in the area for policymakers, planners, and environmentalists to take effective necessary measures to ensure safe drinking water in the study area.

Anthropogenic and natural contribution of potentially toxic elements in southwestern Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta, Bangladesh

Elemental composition, multivariate statistical analyses with the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model, and different pollution indices in Upper and Lower Southwestern Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) delta sediments were studied to characterize pollution, ecological risk and quantify potential toxic element sources of the area. Toxic metals concentrations were higher in Lower Delta and individual pollution indices showed Upper Delta was moderately polluted by arsenic, chromium, cobalt, copper and lead, and Lower Delta was moderately-strongly polluted by the same metals. Synergistic indices include Potential Ecological, Toxic, Nemerow, and Pollution Risk indices in Upper and Lower Delta sediment ranged from 47.17-128.07, 2.03-12.19, 29.92-65.42, 0.28-1.62, and 69.17-246.90, 8.00-13.47, 20.53-152.92, 1.18-1.58, indicated low and moderate risk pollution, respectively. Statistical models represent the metals dominantly originated from nature for Upper Delta, and both natural and anthropogenic activities contributed to Lower Delta sediment. The study found that the modern deposit in Lower Delta became more contaminated and thus enhanced ecological risk.

Identifying factors affecting irrigation metrics in the Haor basin using integrated Shannon's entropy, fuzzy logic and automatic linear model

The sustainability of agricultural practices is seriously threatened by the quality of water used for irrigation. This paper aims to evaluate the suitability of irrigation water and identify the region suitable for agricultural use in the Haor basin of Bangladesh using conventional irrigation indices such as sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), percent sodium (Na%), magnesium hazard ratio (MHR), permeability index (PI), and Kelly's ratio (KR), as well as novel irrigation indices such as, Shannon's entropy index for irrigation water quality (EWQ) and fuzzy logic index for irrigation water quality (FIWQI). The main influences of groundwater and surface water parameters on irrigation indices were predicted using automatic linear modeling (ALM). Forty water samples were collected from shallow tube wells, rivers, canals, ponds, and drainage systems within agricultural land sampled and analyzed for cations and anions. SAR and KR show that 52.5% and 60% of the samples exceeded the allowable level, respectively, indicating that they were unsuitable for irrigation. According to EWQI, about 55% of the analyzed samples were of good quality, while 45% were of medium quality. ALM predicted that KR (0.98), Na% (0.87), and MHR (0.14) were the main significant factors affecting SAR and KR. ALM shows that elevated sodium, magnesium, and calcium are the most important factors affecting irrigation water suitability. The EWQI and FIWQI integrated models showed that water from nearly 30% of the sampling sites would need treatment before use. A new suitability map created by overlaying all parameters showed that surface water and some groundwater in the western and southwestern portions are suitable for agriculture. The north-central part is unsuitable for irrigation due to excessive sodium and magnesium levels. This paper will highlight the irrigation pattern for regional water resource use, identify new suitable regions, and improve sustainable agricultural practices in the Haor basin.

Pollution trends and ecological risks of heavy metal(loid)s in coastal zones of Bangladesh: A chemometric review

Heavy metal(loid)s inputs contribute to human and environmental stresses in the coastal zones of Bangladesh. Several studies have been conducted on metal(loid)s pollution in sediment, soil, and water in the coastal zones. However, they are sporadic, and no attempt has been made in coastal zones from the standpoint of chemometric review. The current work aims to provide a chemometric assessment of the pollution trend of metal(loid)s, namely arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni) in sediments, soils, and water across the coastal zones from 2015 to 2022. The findings showed that 45.7, 15.2, and 39.1 % of studies on heavy metal(loid)s were concentrated in the eastern, central, and western zones of coastal Bangladesh. The obtained data were further modeled using chemometric approaches, such as the contamination factor, pollution load index, geoaccumulation index, degree of contamination, Nemerow's pollution index, and ecological risk index. The results revealed that metal(loid)s, primarily Cd, have severely polluted the sediments (contamination factor, CF = 5.20) and soils (CF = 9.35) of coastal regions. Water was moderately polluted (Nemerow's pollution index, P_N=5.22 ± 6.26) in the coastal area. The eastern zone was the most polluted compared to other zones, except for a few observations in the central zone. The overall ecological risks posed by metal(loid)s highlighted the significant ecological risk in sediments (ecological risk index, RI = 123.50) and soils (RI = 238.93) along the eastern coast. The coastal zone may have higher pollution levels due to the proximity of industrial effluent, residential sewage discharge, agricultural activities, sea transport, metallurgical industries, shipbreaking and recycling operations, and seaport activities, which are the major sources of metal(loid)s. This study will provide useful information to the relevant authorities and serve as the foundation for future management and policy decisions to reduce metal(loid) pollution in the coastal zones of southern Bangladesh.

Metal(loid)s in tap-water from schools in central Bangladesh (Mirpur): Source apportionment, water quality, and health risks appraisals

Considering the health risks originating from the exposure of metal(loid)s in tap-water and the concomitant vulnerability of school-going students, 25 composite tap water samples from different schools and colleges of central Bangladesh (Mirpur, Dhaka) were analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopic technique. Elemental abundances of Na, Mg, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb in the studied tap water samples varied from 4520 to 62250, 2760-29580, 210-3000, 15780-78130, 1.54-5.32, 7.00-196, 2.00-450, 0.04-1.45, 8.23-24.4, 0.10-813, 0.10-10.5, 0.002-0.212, and 1.55-15.8 μgL^-1, respectively. Dissolved metal(loid)s' concentrations were mostly within the national and international threshold values with few exceptions which were also consistent with the entropy-based water quality assessment. Multivariate statistical approaches demonstrated that hydro-geochemical processes like water-rock interactions mostly govern the major elemental (Na, Mg, K, Ca) compositions in tap water. However, anthropogenic processes typically control the trace elemental compositions where supply pipeline scaling was identified as the major source. Cluster analysis on sampling sites separated two groups of schools and colleges depending on their establishment years where tap water from older schools and colleges possesses relatively higher levels of metal(loid)s. Hence, gradual pipeline scaling on a temporal scale augmented the metal(loid)s' concentrations in tap-water. In terms of non-carcinogenic health risks estimation, studied tap-water seems to be safe, whereas elemental abundances of Pb and As can cause carcinogenic risks to school-going people. However, progressive deterioration of water quality by pipeline scaling will be supposed to cause significant health risks in the future, for which preventative measures should be adopted.

Macroalgae for biomonitoring of trace elements in relation to environmental parameters and seasonality in a sub-tropical mangrove estuary

Being a resourceful ecosystem, mangrove estuaries have always been subjected to trace elements (TEs) contamination, and therefore, the biomonitoring approach holds immense potential for surveilling the aquatic environment. To investigate the potentiality of mangrove macroalgae as biomonitors, estuarine water, intertidal-sediment, and macroalgal samples were collected from the Pasur River estuary of Sundarbans mangrove ecosystem, Bangladesh, and afterward studied through Atomic Absorption Spectrometer to quantify the levels of six concerned TEs (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd). This study utilized the geo-environmental and ecological indices and sediment characterization approaches (sediment quality guidelines-SQGs) for assessing the contamination scenario of the adjacent environment to macroalgae whereas the performance of studied algal groups was evaluated using Bio-contamination factor, Comprehensive bio-concentration index, and Metal accumulation index. Metal occurrence scheme in the water followed the order of Fe > Zn > Mn > Pb > Cd while Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd for both sediment and macroalgae. Both Pb and Cd exceeded the guideline limit in estuarine water and the indices approach manifested low to moderate contamination with enrichment from anthropogenic origin of Mn, Zn, and Cu in sediment. Moreover, the SQGs revealed rare biological effects of Cu on an aquatic community. Within algal samples, Chlorophyta contributed the highest biomass production, followed by Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. Statistical relationship disclosed the influence of environmental variables on TE's accumulation in Chlorophyta. By contrast, hydrochemical's association showed prevalence over the TEs accumulation process for Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. Bioaccumulation performance analysis revealed that the ability to accumulate TEs in macroalgal groups varied with seasons. Therefore, biomonitoring with macroalgae for the region of interest might require further temporal considerations.

Spatial distribution, water quality, human health risk assessment, and origin of heavy metals in groundwater and seawater around the ship-breaking area of Bangladesh

The concentrations of eleven heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, As, and Ag) were assessed in both groundwater and seawater collected from the ship-breaking industrial area of Bangladesh using an atomic absorption spectrometer. The investigation aimed to estimate the water quality and pollution level employing several indices, and its associated health risks for the first time in that area. This study found that Cd, Cr, Fe, Pb, Mn, and Ni were higher in both groundwater and seawater compared with WHO standards. Based on the WQI (water quality index) and EWQI (entropy water quality index) classifications, the quality of most of the groundwater is extremely poor or unsuitable for drinking purposes. Furthermore, the HPI (heavy metal pollution index), HEI (heavy metal evaluation index), and CD (degree of contamination) values of most groundwater and all seawater samples exhibit a higher degree of pollution. In addition, the results of NI (Nemerow pollution index) come to an end that both groundwater and seawater in the study area are mostly polluted by Fe, Mn, Pb, Cr, and Cd. Although the HI (hazard quotient index) values of almost all studied heavy metals in both cases of adults and children are within the safe limit, the HI value of Cr for an adult is near the threshold limit and the maximum HI value of Cr for children exceeds this limit. The carcinogenic risk reveals that Cr, Pb, As, and Cd produce detrimental effects on local people through the direct ingestion of groundwater. The pollution source is identified using principal component analysis and a Pearson correlation matrix as being primarily anthropogenic and attributed to intensive ship-breaking activities or other industries in the area.

Exposure and health risks of metals in imported and local brands' lipsticks and eye pencils from Bangladesh

Elemental contamination in cosmetics is a serious health concern as it can pose a cumulative effect on the user's body over a long period. The prime motive of the study was to assess the concentration of 10 concerning chemical elements (Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn) in imported and local lipsticks and eye pencil samples collected from retail outlets in central Bangladesh (Dhaka city) and to assess their dynamic health risks for users. A total of 18 lipsticks and 24 eye pencils were studied and concentrations of chemical elements were examined with atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The health risk assessment was performed for dermal and ingestion routes of the contaminants. The results reveal that the concentrations of the examined elements vary with colors, brands, and origins. Pb and As concentrations were found below the permissible limit but Cr concentration in some samples exceeded the allowable limit in cosmetics. Cd was not detected in any samples; however, other examined elements such as Co, Ni, Cu, Mn, Zn, and Fe were detected in considerable concentrations. Elements like Mn, Zn, and Fe were found at high levels. In the case of lipstick samples, elemental concentrations followed the order of Fe > Zn > Mn > Ni > Cr > Cu > Pb > Co > As, while the order was Fe > Cu > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cr > Co > Pb > As for eye pencil samples. Results of the hazards quotient (HQ) indicate that there were no non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic risks of elements in samples for dermal exposure. But the cancer risk values of Cr (HQ > 1 for ingestion) in brown color lipsticks and Ni indicate that lipsticks have some carcinogenic effects if they enter the user's body. Dermal cancer risk for eye pencils has also been calculated and for Pb, Cr, Ni, and As; the values were found within the acceptable ranges of 10^-6-10^-4. It is suggested that the allowable limit of all toxic elements in cosmetics must be established. Furthermore, continuous monitoring is urgently needed for personal care products like lipsticks and eye pencils commonly available in the local markets in the country like Bangladesh.

Evaluating heavy metal pollution risks and enzyme activity in soils with intensive hazelnut cultivation under humid ecological conditions

In order to promote sustainable agriculture and ensure food security, it has become more vital to identify the causes of soil pollution in agricultural areas. This study was carried out in order to determine the danger of heavy metal contamination in hazelnut production areas and to take the appropriate actions in accordance with the study's findings. In this context, the main objectives of this study were to (i) determine some physical, chemical, and biological properties and heavy metal concentrations of different soils in intensive hazelnut cultivation areas under humid ecological conditions; (ii) reveal the heavy metal pollution risks of these areas by their enrichment factor, contamination factor, geo-accumulation index, degree of contamination, pollution load index, and potential ecological risk index; (iii) analyze the quality of soils contaminated with heavy metals by their total enzyme activity index and the geometric mean of enzymatic activities; and (iv) explore the correlation between heavy metals and soil enzyme activity indices. According to our results, the average concentrations of heavy metals in the study area ranked as Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd. Based on EF, the area was evaluated as between deficiency to low enrichment and moderate enrichment for all elements except for Cd. When the parameters used to assess the risk of heavy metal contamination were evaluated, it was determined that the risk of contamination of other elements in the study area, except Cd, was low. Finally, analyzing the heavy metals and soil enzyme activity indices shows that there is a negative correlation between Ni and GMea and TEI.

Facile acid fermentation extraction of silkworm pupae oil and evaluation of its physical and chemical properties for utilization as edible oil

Considering the increasing demand for edible oil in recent times, their price in the world market is becoming skyrocketing. In this research, we produced cost-effective edible oil from desilked silkworm pupae (Bombyx mori) applying a facile acid fermentation process, for the first time. The extraction was performed using two different types of organic acids, 3% of each acetic and citric acid. The yield of the extracted oil was 3.52 ± 0.23% from fresh silkworm pupae. The produced oil was then characterized physically and chemically to know its suitability to be used as edible oil. The oil was found with a low peroxide and acid value of 4.82 meq/kg and 1.35 mg KOH/g oil, respectively, and comprised of different fatty acids, in which palmitic acid (32.04%) and oleic acid (34.62%) were in large portions among the total fatty acids. Additionally, the extracted oil included linoleic, α-linolenic, and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid which have health benefits. The oil was rich with minerals such as Iron, Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Phosphorus with a negligible concentration of toxic elements such as Manganese, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper, Lead, Cadmium, Chromium, Arsenic, and Silver, indicating a good nutritive value of the extracted oil. Overall, the outcomes of all the characterizations showed that the extracted oil could be used as good edible oil and the corresponding acid fermentation extraction process has the potential to be used as an effective oil extraction method for silkworm pupae.

Seasonal Assessment of some Potentially Toxic Elements with Possible Animal Health Risks in Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt

In the present investigation Br (Bromine), Cr (Chromium) and Pb (Lead) concentrations were assessed employing X-ray florescence spectrometry to evaluate seasonal variation of these elements in the xero-halophyte Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt., a shrub with high pastoral value. The results showed that A. canescens and its surrounding soil have similar accumulation patterns for Br and Pb across seasons, but Cr concentrations in shrubs are higher in spring than other seasons. The seasonal mean contents of trace elements in A. canescens descend in the following order: Cr (8.33 µg g^- 1) > Br (5.34 µg g^- 1) > Pb (0.24 µg g^- 1). The maximum element transfer factor (ETF) of Cr and Pb was recorded in summer and autumn. However, no significant difference between seasons was found for Br. Principle component analysis (PCA) showed that Br, Cr and Pb were associated negatively with soil during all seasons. In contrast, A. canescens was only associated to Cr contents in the spring. Results provide evidence also that the levels of Br, Cr and Pb were within the safety-limits recommended by the National Research Council (NRC) guidelines for animal nutrition.

Effects of shipwrecks on spatiotemporal dynamics of metal/loids in sediments and seafood safety in the Bay of Bengal

Metal/loid pollution from shipwrecking activities has drawn significant concern due to their persistent threat to the marine ecosystem and human health. We investigated the spatiotemporal distribution, pollution characteristics, risks, sources, and potential impact of metal/loids in the sediments and seafood in the Bay of Bengal at nearby open beaching shipwrecking yards in Bangladesh. We collected 78 sediments and 208 seafood samples from the exposed and control sites from 2018 to 2020 during the dry and wet seasons. The concentrations of 16 elements, including cadmium, arsenic, lead, chromium, manganese, copper, zinc, iron, tin, antimony, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, selenium, and thallium were measured using validated inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods. Based on the pollution indices (enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, pollution index, and pollution load index), lead, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, copper, zinc, and tin from the dry season showed higher contaminations compared to the wet and their concentrations were increased from 2018 to 2020 with seasonal fluctuations. Sediment cadmium and arsenic posed relatively higher and moderate ecological risks. Health risk analysis indicated that lead, cadmium, and inorganic arsenic (estimated) in seafood species pose a possible health threat to the general population. Further, there were possible ecological and health risks for the metal/loids in combination based on the ecological risk index in sediment and the hazard index in seafood, respectively. Source apportionment suggested that anthropogenic activities through uncontrolled shipwrecking operations over the last four decades were the largest polluting dominator, contributing 55-77% of the metal/loid concentrations. Therefore, the data may inform mitigation strategies for emission control at the shipwrecking yards to protect marine ecosystems and their local population.

Eco-geochemical evaluation of the Leizhou Peninsula (southern China) and the prediction of heavy metal content in soils

The Leizhou Peninsula is an important base for tropical and subtropical cash crops in China, but still lacks systematic research on regional eco-geochemical characteristics. Here the elemental results show that risk-free soils accounted for 9168 km² and were mainly concentrated in the northern Leizhou Peninsula, while risk-controllable soils occupied 3318 km² and were mostly distributed in the southern part. The contributor of the heavy metals in soils was mainly natural rocks, while the road traffic dust and coal combustion were also responsible for the origin of anomalous elements Cd, Cr, and Ni (0.004-1.8, 0.76-590, and 0.14-372 mg/kg, respectively). 90.15 % of the Leizhou Peninsula plants were not obviously contaminated, yet the comparison between the data collected in 1997 and 2018 allows us to speculate that Ni in the studied soils will reach the risk screening value in 7 years, followed by Cr and Cu in 39 and 92 years, respectively.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in soils and food crops from a coexist area of heavily industrialized and intensively cropping in the Chengdu Plain, Sichuan, China

Environmental pollution caused by rapid industrial activities are becoming increasingly drastic, particularly its impact on soil and plant health. The present study was conducted to investigate the heavy metal (loid) (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn) concentrations in soils and food biomass crops and estimate the potential health risks of metals to humans via consumption of contaminated food biomass crops from Shifang, a periurban agricultural areas in the Chengdu Plain, Sichuan, China. Results revealed that the soils have been experiencing a substantial accumulation of heavy metals, especially for Cd, with a mean of 0.84 mg kg⁻¹, about six times higher than the background values, of which 98% exceeded the pollution warning threshold of the China Soil Environmental Quality Standards. A total of 78% of all the grain part failed the national food standard for Cd. No significantly positive relationships between metal levels in food biomass crops and in the corresponding soils, indicated metals enrichment in soils were not entirely reflected to crops contaminant burdens. Estimated daily intake (EDI) of all the metals except for Pb, exceeded the oral reference dose (RfD) or the minimal risk levels recommended by USEPA and ATSDR. Target hazard quotients (THQs) of all the metals except for Cd was less than one indicated that potential health risk to the local inhabitant originated mainly from Cd exposure via cereals consumption. Mitigation strategies to curtail Cd-contaminated soils and crops Cd burdens need careful tailoring to meet the needs of health and safety in this region.

Chemical profiles and pharmacological insights of Anisomeles indica Kuntze: An experimental chemico-biological interaction

Anisomeles indica (L.) Kuntze is an ethnomedicinally important plant that has long been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including dyspepsia, abdominal pain, colic, allergies, inflammation, and rheumatic arthritis. However, the scientific framework underlying these medicinal properties is not well known. This study aimed to investigate the antidepressive, antidiarrheal, thrombolytic, and anti-inflammatory potential of a methanol extract of A. indica (MeOH-AI). The potential bioactive compounds in the MeOH-AI were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and antidepressant activities were evaluated using the tail suspension test (TST) and forced swim test (FST). Antidiarrheal effects were also assayed in castor oil-induced diarrhea and gastrointestinal motility studies. The anti-inflammatory activities were explored by examining the effects on protein inhibition and denaturation in heat- and hypotonic solution-induced hemolysis assays. The thrombolytic activity was evaluated using the clot lysis test in human blood. BIOVIA and Schrödinger Maestro (v11.1) were applied for docking analysis to determine binding interactions, and the absorption, distribution, metabolisms, excretion/toxicity (ADME/T) properties of bioactive compounds were explored using a web-based method. The GC-MS analysis of MeOH-AI revealed the presence of several bioactive compounds. MeOH-AI administration resulted in significant (p < 0.01) reductions in the immobility times for both the FST and TST compared with those in the control group. MeOH-AI also induced significant (p < 0.01) reductions in castor oil-induced diarrhea severity and gastrointestinal motility in a mouse model. In addition, the in vitro anti-inflammatory and thrombolytic activity studies produced remarkable responses. The binding assay showed that 4-dehydroxy-N-(4,5-methylenedioxy-2-nitrobenzylidene) tyramine interacts favorably with monoamine oxidase and serotonin and M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, displaying good pharmacokinetic properties, which may mediate the effects of MeOH-AI on depression and diarrhea. Overall, the research findings indicated that MeOH-AI has significant antidepressant, antidiarrheal, and anti-inflammatory effects and may represent an alternative source of novel therapeutic factors.

Exposure of the residents around the Three Gorges Reservoir, China to chromium, lead and arsenic and their health risk via food consumption

Hydrological management of the Three Gorges Dam has resulted in the interception of heavy metals in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). However, the exposure to heavy metals and health risks among local residents remained poorly understood. Here we collected 208 biomarker samples (hair) and 20 food species from typical regions in the TGR to assess the exposure levels of three toxic metals (Cr, Pb and As) in residents of the TGR, and subsequently investigated their health risk via dietary intake. Results indicated that hair Cr and As levels were below the reference value for normal people and threshold of skin lesions, respectively, whereas about 22% hair Pb exceeded the reference for clinical medicine, indicating a potential Pb exposure of local residents. Smoking habit and fish consumption were found to be predictors for hair Pb. In addition, the concentrations of heavy metals in all investigated food samples were below the limits of contaminants in food in China, except for Pb in the sweet potato and fish. The estimated daily intake of metals (DIMs) revealed that the intakes of Cr and As from studied food were under the recommended thresholds of Cr and As. However, the intake of Pb via diet exceeded the limit of the prevalence of chronic kidney disease and closed to the threshold for cardiovascular, which was probably associated with the high Pb concentrations of fish and sweet potato. Overall, residents around the TGR were at low exposure to Cr and As, but Pb exposure may need more attention.

Silicon Fertilization: A Step towards Cadmium-Free Fragrant Rice

Soil contamination with toxic cadmium (Cd) is becoming a serious global problem and poses a key hazard to environments and the health of human beings worldwide. The present study investigated the effects of foliar applications of three forms of silicate chemicals (calcium silicate, sodium silicate, and potassium silicate) at four rates (0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%) at tillering stage on rice growth and the accumulation of Cd under Cd stress (30 mg kg^-1). The results showed that Cd stress reduced the yield-related traits and enlarged Cd contents in different rice organs. The leaf gas exchange attributes and yield traits were enhanced, and the Cd accumulation and bioaccumulation factor in rice organs were reduced, especially in grains, through silicon application. In shoots, roots, and grains, foliar spray of Si reduced Cd contents by 40.3%, 50.7%, and 47.9%, respectively. The effectiveness of silicate compounds in reducing Cd toxicity varied with the kind of chemicals and doses of foliar applications. Foliar application of potassium silicate, at a rate of 0.5%, at tillering stage, showed the best effectiveness in improving grain yield, while mitigating Cd accumulation in rice grains. The outcome of this study provides a promising practicable approach in alleviating Cd toxicity in rice and preventing the entrance of Cd into the food chain.

Level of pesticides contamination in the major river systems: A review on South Asian countries perspective

Pesticides are chemical compounds used worldwide for different purposes. These chemicals are well known for their long life, high toxicity, and slow degradation process. Many developed countries including South Asian countries banned the use of pesticides for their adverse effects. However, several pesticides are found incessantly in water and soil. To highlight the recent situation of pesticide contamination in South Asian river systems, we have studied 136 relevant articles published from 2015 to 2020. Articles were gathered using several commonly available search engines and organized according to information related to river systems of South Asian countries. After thoroughly examining those research articles, we summarized that most of the river systems are contaminated by pesticides, where DDTs, HCHs, endosulfan, heptachlor, and chlorpyrifos are the key recognized compounds among them. Comparing the level of pesticides with standard guidelines, we found that the Tapi River and Chilika Lake of India are considerably more contaminated than other river basins. Multivariate analyses identified the industrial discharge and agricultural run-off of chemicals as the probable sources of pesticides in these rivers. By analyzing the amount of annual pesticide production, their use, and accordingly their considerable presence in the water systems of the South Asian countries, it is evident that the banned pesticides are used regularly by these countries and thus contaminating the environment. Therefore, the formulations of appropriate rules and their enforcement to control the manufacture and solicitation of such pesticides are an urgent need to save the environment.
