Abstract
Background Postmenopausal women are at an increased risk of arterial stiffness, which can be assessed using estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum klotho levels and ePWV in postmenopausal women. Methods This cross-sectional study used data from postmenopausal women who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2016. Participants were divided into two groups based on the presence of hypertension. Weighted multivariate linear regression was used to analyze the relationship between serum Klotho levels and ePWV in each group. Restricted cubic spline models with multivariable adjustments were employed to examine nonlinear associations within each group. Results Our analysis included 4,468 postmenopausal women from the NHANES database, with 1,671 in the non-hypertensive group and 2,797 in the hypertensive group. In all regression models, serum Klotho (ln-transformed) levels were significantly and independently negatively correlated with ePWV in the non-hypertensive group. After fully adjusting for confounders, a 1-unit increase in ln(Klotho) was associated with a 0.13 m/s decrease in ePWV (β = -0.13, 95% CI -0.23 to -0.03; p = 0.008). Additionally, in the fully adjusted model, participants in the highest quartile of ln(Klotho) had an ePWV value 0.14 m/s lower than those in the lowest quartile (p for trend = 0.017; 95% CI -0.23 to -0.05; p = 0.002). This negative correlation was consistent across subgroups and was particularly significant among women aged < 60 years, nonsmokers, and non-Hispanic Black women. However, no association was observed between serum Klotho levels and ePWV in the hypertensive group. Conclusion Hypertension may affect the relationship between serum Klotho level and ePWV in postmenopausal women. Increased serum Klotho levels may reduce arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women. Further studies are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Objectives The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among patients with ischemic stroke is relatively high. The visceral fat area (VFA) is a predictor of MetS. This study aimed to estimate sex-specific optimal cut-off values of VFA and MetS risk factors among patients with ischemic stroke. Methods A cross-sectional study including 851 patients with ischemic stroke was conducted between March 2019 and January 2020 in a tertiary hospital in the northeast of China. VFA was measured using the dual bioelectrical impedance method. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate MetS risk factors, and the VFA cut-off value was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Results The overall prevalence of MetS was 43.4%. After adjusting for potential confounders, female sex (odds ratio [OR] = 2.86, p < 0.001), the presence of visceral obesity according to VFA (OR = 7.45, p < 0.001), being overweight (OR = 2.75, p < 0.001) or obesity (OR = 6.00, p < 0.001) were associated with an increased risk of MetS. The correlation between VFA and MetS in patients with ischemic stroke was strongest with cut-off values of 104.3 cm2 (sensitivity 73.0%, specificity 83.1%) for men, and 94.1 cm2 (sensitivity 70.9%, specificity 72.9%) for women. Conclusion MetS affected approximately a half of patients with ischemic stroke. Female sex, visceral obesity, and body mass index were independent risk factors for the development of MetS. Sex-specific reference values for VFA are proposed for the prediction of incident MetS in patients with ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Menopause is an endocrine shift leading to increased vulnerability for cognitive impairment and dementia risk factors, in part due to loss of neuroprotective circulating estrogens. Systemic replacement of estrogen post-menopause has limitations, including risk for estrogen-sensitive cancers. A promising therapeutic approach therefore might be to deliver estrogen only to the brain. We examined whether we could enhance cognitive performance by delivering estrogen exclusively to the brain in ovariectomized mice (a surgical menopause model). We treated mice with the prodrug 10β,17β-dihydroxyestra-1,4-dien-3-one (DHED), which can be administered systemically but is converted to 17β-estradiol only in the brain. Young and middle-aged C57BL/6 J mice received ovariectomy and subcutaneous implant containing vehicle or DHED and underwent cognitive testing to assess memory after 1-3.5 months of treatment. Low and medium doses of DHED did not alter metabolic status in middle-aged mice. In both age groups, DHED treatment improved spatial memory in ovariectomized mice. Additional testing in middle-aged mice showed that DHED treatment improved working and recognition memory in ovariectomized mice. These results lay the foundation for future studies determining if this intervention is as efficacious in models of dementia with comorbid risk factors.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women. After menopause, sex-specific and gender-specific factors may play an important role in increasing CVD risk, with changes in sex hormones, body fat distribution, lipid and metabolic profile, and structural and functional vascular modifications. Premature and early-onset menopause are detrimental to cardiovascular health due to the early cessation of the protective effect of endogenous estrogen. An independent association of menopause with an increased risk of CVD has been documented in early menopause (<45 years). Sex-related differences are relevant in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; different enzyme formations, drug compatibility, efficacy, and side effects vary for different sexes. Despite some progress in sex and gender research in CVD, disparities remain. Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is available at mid-life for symptoms of menopause and may impact cardiovascular risk. Taken early, MHT may reduce CVD morbimortality. However, this is balanced against the risk of increased thrombosis. This paper reviews physiologic changes that contribute to cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women and discusses clinical implications. Specifically, it explores the atheroprotective effects of estrogen and MHT and the associations between menopause with lipid levels, hypertension, body composition, and diabetes for women at mid-life and beyond.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is considered to be an important parameter of cardio-metabolic health and contributing to the development of atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes. The incidence of MetS significantly increases in postmenopausal women, therefore, the perimenopausal period is considered a critical phase for prevention. We aimed to use four machine learning methods to predict whether perimenopausal women will develop MetS within 2 years. METHODS Women aged 45-55 years who underwent 2 consecutive years of physical examinations in Ninth Clinical College of Peking University between January 2021 and December 2022 were included. We extracted 26 features from physical examinations, and used backward selection method to select top 10 features with the largest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), Random forest (RF), Multilayer perceptron (MLP) and Logistic regression (LR) were used to establish the model. Those performance were measured by AUC, accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score. SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) value was used to identify risk factors affecting perimenopausal MetS. RESULTS A total of 8700 women had physical examination records, and 2,254 women finally met the inclusion criteria. For predicting MetS events, RF and XGBoost had the highest AUC (0.96, 0.95, respectively). XGBoost has the highest F1 value (F1 = 0.77), followed by RF, LR and MLP. SHAP value suggested that the top 5 variables affecting MetS in this study were Waist circumference, Fasting blood glucose, High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, Triglycerides and Diastolic blood pressure, respectively. CONCLUSION We've developed a targeted MetS risk prediction model for perimenopausal women, using health examination data. This model enables early identification of high MetS risk in this group, offering significant benefits for individual health management and wider socio-economic health initiatives.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome poses a significant health concern, particularly among postmenopausal women who are vulnerable to its adverse effects. Emerging evidence suggests a potential role of vitamin D in mitigating metabolic syndrome risk factors, prompting interest in its supplementation as a therapeutic intervention. This comprehensive review examines the impact of vitamin D supplementation on metabolic syndrome variables in postmenopausal women. Through a systematic synthesis of existing literature, we assess the evidence supporting the beneficial effects of vitamin D on insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, and inflammation markers in this population. While findings suggest potential benefits, uncertainties remain regarding optimal dosage and duration of supplementation. Implications for clinical practice underscore the importance of assessing vitamin D status and considering supplementation as part of a comprehensive approach to metabolic health management. Furthermore, public health initiatives promoting adequate vitamin D intake may help mitigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated complications. However, further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, establish optimal supplementation protocols, and explore potential interactions with other nutrients or medications. Long-term randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate the sustained effects of vitamin D supplementation on metabolic health outcomes in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the significant increase in cardiovascular events in women after menopause, studies comparing postmenopausal women and men are scarce. METHODS We analyzed data from a nationwide, multicenter, prospective registry and enrolled 2412 patients with stable chest pain who underwent elective coronary angiography. Binary coronary artery disease (b-CAD) was defined as the ≥50% stenosis of epicardial coronary arteries, including the left main coronary artery. RESULTS Compared with the men, postmenopausal women were older (66.6 ± 8.5 vs. 59.5 ± 11.4 years) and had higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (49.0 ± 12.8 vs. 43.6 ± 11.6 mg/dl, P < 0.01). The prevalence of diabetes did not differ significantly ( P = 0.40), and smoking was more common in men than in postmenopausal women ( P ≤ 0.01). At enrollment, b-CAD and revascularization were more common in men than in postmenopausal women (50.3% vs. 41.0% and 14.4% vs. 9.7%, respectively; both P < 0.01). However, multivariate analyses revealed that revascularization [odds ratio (OR): 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.49-1.08] was not significantly related to sex and a similar result was found in age propensity-matched population (OR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.52-1.24). During the follow-up period, the secondary composite cardiovascular outcomes were lower in postmenopausal women than in men (OR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.31-0.98), also consistent with the result using the age propensity-mated population (OR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.13-0.85). CONCLUSION Postmenopausal women experienced coronary revascularization comparable to those in men at enrollment, despite the average age of postmenopausal women was 7 years older than that of men.Postmenopausal women exhibit better clinical outcomes than those of men if optimal treatment is provided.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common and presents in a large proportion-up to 30%-of the global adult female population. Several factors have been linked with NAFLD in women, such as age, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. To extract appropriate details about the topic, we conducted an extensive search using various medical subject headings and entry terms including 'Menopause', 'Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease', 'Insulin resistance', and 'BMI'. This exhaustive search resulted in a total of 180 studies, among which only 19 were able to meet the inclusion criteria. While most of these studies indicated a significant rise in NAFLD prevalence among postmenopausal women, two did not find strong evidence linking menopause with NAFLD. Moreover, it was observed that women with NAFLD had higher insulin resistance levels and BMIs compared to those without the condition. In summary, it is important to consider specific factors like risk profile, hormonal status, and age along with metabolic components when treating women presenting with NAFLD. There is need for data-driven research on how gender affects the sensitivity of biomarkers towards NAFLD as well as the development of sex-specific prediction models-this would help personalize management approaches for women, who stand to benefit greatly from such tailored interventions.

Abstract
On March 28, 2024, the Council of Experts "High-dose vitamin D (Devilam) in the practice of obstetrician-gynecologist, gynecologist and endocrinologist" was held in Moscow with the participation of leading experts gynecologists, endocrinologists and obstetricians-gynecologists, during which new possibilities for the use of high-dose vitamin D in patients of various ages who need correction of existing vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency.

Abstract
Loss of ovarian function imparts increased susceptibility to obesity and metabolic disease. These effects are largely attributed to decreased estradiol (E2), but the role of increased follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in modulating energy balance has not been fully investigated. Previous work that blocked FSH binding to its receptor in mice suggested this hormone may play a part in modulating body weight and energy expenditure after ovariectomy (OVX). We used an alternate approach to isolate the individual and combined contributions of FSH and E2 in mediating energy imbalance and changes in tissue-level metabolic health. Female Wistar rats were ovariectomized and given the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist degarelix to suppress FSH production. E2 and FSH were then added back individually and in combination for a period of 3 wk. Energy balance, body mass composition, and transcriptomic profiles of individual tissues were obtained. In contrast to previous studies, suppression and replacement of FSH in our paradigm had no effect on body weight, body composition, food intake, or energy expenditure. We did, however, observe organ-specific effects of FSH that produced unique transcriptomic signatures of FSH in retroperitoneal white adipose tissue. These included reductions in biological processes related to lipogenesis and carbohydrate transport. In addition, rats administered FSH had reduced liver triglyceride concentration (P < 0.001), which correlated with FSH-induced changes at the transcriptomic level. Although not appearing to modulate energy balance after loss of ovarian function in rats, FSH may still impart tissue-specific effects in the liver and white adipose tissue that might affect the metabolic health of those organs.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We find no effect of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on energy balance using a novel model in which rats are ovariectomized, subjected to gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonism, and systematically given back FSH by osmotic pump. However, tissue-specific effects of FSH on adipose tissue and liver were observed in this study. These include unique transcriptomic signatures induced by the hormone and a stark reduction in hepatic triglyceride accumulation.

Abstract
Interest in sex differences related to coronary artery disease (CAD) has steadily increased, and the risk factors for CAD show distinct sex differences. For women, cardiovascular risk increases significantly after menopause due to a decrease in estrogen levels. In older individuals, increased arterial stiffness results in a higher pulse pressure, leading to a more common occurrence of isolated systolic hypertension; these changes are more noticeable in women. While the incidence of diabetes is similar in both sexes, women with diabetes face a 50% higher relative risk of fatal coronary heart disease compared to men. Smoking significantly increases the risk of ischemic heart disease in women, particularly those who are younger. The decrease in estrogen in women leads to a redistribution of fat, resulting in increased abdominal obesity and, consequently, an elevated cardiovascular risk. Pregnancy and reproductive factors also have a significant impact on CAD risks in women. Additionally, disparities exist in medical practice. Women are less likely to be prescribed cardioprotective drugs, referred for interventional or surgical treatments, or included in clinical research than men. By increasing awareness of these sex differences and addressing the disparities, we can progress toward more personalized treatment strategies, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional status is a modifiable factor associated with perimenopausal women's health and quality of life. Assessing body composition indicators helps to comprehensively understand nutritional status compared with using body mass index (BMI) only. However, few published studies measured the trends in body composition among perimenopausal women. OBJECTIVES To assess the one-year trajectory of the nutritional status of perimenopausal women and to explore its influential factors. METHODS A community-based observational study with 3-wave repeated measurements at 6-month intervals was carried out. The nutritional status indicators include weight, body mass index (BMI), and body composition variables. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to assess body composition. Repeated measures ANOVA and Chi-square test were used to calculate the changes in nutritional status and generalized estimating equations were performed to explore their influential factors. RESULTS 2760 participants completed the study. Increasing trajectories in weight (from 56.05 ± 7.55 to 57.02 ± 7.60), fat mass (from 17.99 ± 4.80 to 20.49 ± 4.90), and waist-hip ratio (from 0.86 ± 0.04 to 0.91 ± 0.15) were found (P < 0.001). Decreasing trajectories in skeletal muscle (from 20.30 ± 2.38 to 19.19 ± 2.46), protein level (from 7.39 ± 0.79 to 7.06 ± 0.81), and total body water (from 27.87 ± 2.92 to 27.00 ± 3.01) were found (P < 0.001). Being married/unmarried with a partner and without negative life events were associated with higher total body water, skeletal muscle, and protein level, while negatively associated with fat mass and waist-hip ratio. Age was positively associated with fat mass (P < 0.001). Participants with junior high school education were prone to increased fat mass (P = 0.018) compared with those holding primary school education and below. A per capita monthly income of 1500 to 3000 Yuan was associated with higher total body water, skeletal muscle, and protein level (P < 0.001) compared with a per capita monthly income of less than 1500 Yuan. CONCLUSION Worsening nutritional status exists in perimenopausal women, which is characterized by increased weight, fat mass, and waist-hip ratio, and decreased skeletal muscle, total body water, and protein level. For greater efficiency, precision nutritional interventions are needed, and recipients should be classified into different risk levels based on their sociodemographic background.

Abstract
AIM Insulin resistance (IR) may participate in the pathogenesis of hypertension by mediating low-grade systemic inflammation. The triglycerides-glucose (TyG) index has recently been suggested as a reliable alternative biochemical marker of IR compared with traditional methods. Herein, we speculated TyG index may also be associated with hypertension. METHODS Data of adults were extracted from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 2009-2015 in this retrospective cohort study. The TyG index was calculated using the formula: TyG = Ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) ×fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2]. Associations between TyG index and hypertension were evaluated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses of age and gender were also performed. In addition, we assessed the interaction effect between TyG index and body mass index (BMI) on hypertension in participants with different age and gender. RESULTS Among 3,413 eligible participants, 1,627 (47.67%) developed hypertension. The average TyG index in hypertension group and non-hypertension group was 8.58 and 8.39 respectively. After adjusting for covariates, we found that compared with participants with TyG index ≤ 8.41 (median value), those who had higher TyG index seemed to have higher odds of hypertension [OR = 1.17, 95%CI: (1.01-1.37)]. Similarly, this association was also discovered in participants who aged ≤ 65 years old [OR = 1.19, 95%CI: (1.01-1.39)] or were female [OR = 1.35, 95%CI: (1.10-1.65)]. Additionally, there was a potential additive interaction effect between obesity and TyG index on hypertension. CONCLUSION High TyG index was associated with high odds of hypertension in general population in China, but the causal relationship between them needed further exploration.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents the leading cause of death and accounts for almost 50% of all deaths in women worldwide. The menopausal transition is associated with central body fat accumulation, a decrease in energy expenditure, weight gain, insulin resistance and a pro-atherogenic lipid profile. Moreover, menopause is independently associated with an adverse effect on functional and structural indices of subclinical atherosclerosis. Women with premature ovarian insufficiency have heightened CVD risk compared to women of natural age at menopause. Furthermore, women with severe menopausal symptoms may have a more adverse cardiometabolic profile than those without symptoms. We reviewed the latest evidence on the cardiovascular management of perimenopausal or postmenopausal women. Clinicians should aim for cardiovascular risk stratification, followed by dietary and lifestyle advice as required based on individual needs. The medical management of cardiometabolic risk factors at midlife should always be individualized, focusing on hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia. Menopausal hormone therapy, when prescribed for the management of bothersome menopausal symptoms or for the prevention of osteoporosis, has also a beneficial effect on cardiometabolic risk factors. This narrative review aims to summarize the cardiometabolic alternations occurring during the menopausal transition and to outline the appropriate prevention strategies to prevent future cardiovascular adverse outcomes.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Little is known about whether early menopause in Chinese ethnicity is associated with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to determine whether self-reported early menopause (either surgical or natural menopause at an age <50 year) was associated with first AMI in Chinese women. Methods: The study population was from the INTERHEART China Study, part of the INTERHEART global study. INTERHEART global study was a standardized case-control study that was designed to evaluate the risk factors for first AMI among 52 countries. Data for demographic factors, education, income, and cardiovascular risk factors were obtained by structured questionnaires. A standard set of questions that inquired about menstrual history was included in the interview. Results: Of the 1,771 Chinese women, 1,563 (88.3%) reported either natural or surgical menopause. In univariate logistic regression model, women with early menopause had higher risk of AMI (odds ratio [OR]: 1.51; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.23-1.87). After controlling for age, birth control measures, type of menopause, and other traditional risk factors (including waist/hip ratio, lifestyle factors, history of hypertension and diabetes, psychosocial factors, and apolipoprotein B [ApoB]/A1 [ApoA1]), the risk for AMI remained (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.03-1.79). The population attributable risk for AMI in women with early menopause at <50 years was 10.1% (95% CI: 4.0-20.0) compared with women who had menopause at ≥50 years. Conclusion: Early menopause is associated with increased risk of AMI in Chinese women, independent of other traditional coronary heart disease risk factors.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of yoga on the frequency of MetS and its impact on cardiovascular risk markers in climacteric women. We recruited 84 sedentary women between 40 and 65 years diagnosed with MetS. Participants were randomly assigned to a 24-week yoga intervention or control group. We evaluated the frequency of MetS and changes in the individual components of MetS at baseline and after 24 weeks. We also assessed the impact of yoga practices on cardiovascular risk through the following markers: High-sensitivity C-reactive Protein (hs-CRP), Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP), Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI), and Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP). The frequency of MetS reduced significantly after 24 weeks of yoga practice (- 34.1%; p < 0.001). Statistical analysis showed that the frequency of MetS was significantly lower in the yoga group (65.9%; n = 27) than in the control group (93.0%; n = 40) after 24 weeks (p = 0.002). Regarding the individual components of MetS, yoga practitioners had statistically lower waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, HDLc, and glucose serum concentrations than the control group after 24 weeks. Yoga practitioners also had a significant decrease in hs-CRP serum concentrations (3.27 ± 2.95 mg/L vs. 2.52 ± 2.14 mg/L; p = 0.040) and a lower frequency of moderate or high cardiovascular risk (48.8% vs. 34.1%; p = 0.001) after 24 weeks of practice. The yoga group had LAP values significantly lower than the control group after the intervention period (55.8 ± 38.04 vs. 73.9 ± 40.7; p = 0.039). Yoga practice demonstrated to be an effective therapeutic to manage MetS and reduce cardiovascular risk in climacteric women.

Abstract
AIMS We aim to explore the cumulative predictive value of elevated serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and visceral fat area (VFA) for metabolic syndrome (MS) development in postmenopausal women. METHODS A total of 1006 postmenopausal females were enrolled in a 10-year prospective longitudinal study from 2011 to 2021 in the community of Banknote Printing Company of Chengdu. The sociodemographic information collection and anthropometric measurements were made by a professional nurse. Fasting blood samples were drawn for chemical analysis of fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and TSH. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to measure VFA. All the participants were categorized into four groups according to median VFA and serum level of TSH. RESULTS A total of 793 postmenopausal females without MS underwent a 10-year follow-up study grouping by TSH and VFA: Group 1 (TSH level <4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA < 70 cm2 ), Group 2 (TSH level ≥4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA < 70 cm2 ), Group 3 (TSH level <4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA ≥70 cm2 ) and Group 4 (TSH level ≥4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA ≥70 cm2 ). During the 10-year follow-up, MS was newly developed in 326 (41.1%) subjects. The incidence of MS was 29.8% (n = 53), 35.2% (n = 63), 41% (n = 87), and 55% (n = 123) from Group 1 to Group 4 (Group 4 vs other groups, p < .001). Cox regression analysis for MS prediction demonstrated that both TSH (Model 3, hazard ratio [HR] = 1.07 [95% confidence interval, 1.05-1.09]) and VFA (Model 4, HR = 1.02 [95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.08]) were not only independent predictors of MS but also involved some interaction between each other (p for interaction = .021). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that mutual interaction between higher TSH and VFA contributed to the development of MS. Further studies are needed to clarify these contributions.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Vasomotor symptoms are frequently experienced by women during menopause and have been linked to obesity. Severity of menopausal symptoms is a distinct construct from presence of symptoms, and the relation between severity of symptoms and obesity is less established. The purpose of this brief narrative review was to summarize evidence from recent studies on associations between menopausal symptom severity and measures of obesity. RECENT FINDINGS Sixteen articles were identified that specifically assessed and reported on the severity of menopausal symptoms in relation to measures of obesity including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio. Most studies to date show that greater BMI, waist size, and waist-to-hip ratio are associated with greater severity of menopausal symptoms. Given the large segment of women who will experience symptoms and that severity of symptoms influences treatment decisions, future studies are needed to determine how weight management efforts may reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms.

Abstract
Postmenopausal osteoporosis and poor dietary habits can lead to overweightness and obesity. Bisphosphonates are the first-line treatment for osteoporosis. However, some studies show that they may increase the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Considering the antimicrobial, angiogenic and vasodilatory potential of nitric oxide, this study aims to evaluate the local activity of this substance during the placement of surface-treated implants. Seventy-two Wistar rats were divided into three groups: SHAM (SHAM surgery), OVX + HD (ovariectomy + cafeteria diet), and OVX + HD + RIS (ovariectomy + cafeteria diet + sodium risedronate treatment), which were further subdivided according to the surface treatment of the future implant: CONV (conventional), TE10, or TE100 (TERPY at 10 or 100 μM concentration); n = 8 per subgroup. The animals underwent surgery for implant installation in the proximal tibia metaphysis and were euthanized after 28 days. Data obtained from removal torque and RT-PCR (OPG, RANKL, ALP, IBSP and VEGF expression) were subjected to statistical analysis at 5% significance level. For biomechanical analysis, TE10 produced better results in the OVX + HD group (7.4 N/cm, SD = 0.6819). Molecular analysis showed: (1) significant increase in OPG gene expression in OVX groups with TE10; (2) decreased RANKL expression in OVX + HD + RIS compared to OVX + HD; (3) significantly increased expressions of IBSP and VEGF for OVX + HD + RIS TE10. At its lowest concentration, TERPY has the potential to improve peri-implant conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) is advised before 40-45 years of age for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. This study describes the effect of RRSO on lipid determinants, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and C-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS A total of 142 women with increased risk of ovarian cancer were included, 92 premenopausal and 50 postmenopausal. Serum levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and total cholesterol, triglycerides, HbA1c and CRP were determined at three points in time: before (T0) and 6 weeks (T1) and 7 months (T2) following RRSO. The Hot Flush Rating Scale was administered at the same time points. RESULTS In premenopausal women, levels of HDL-cholesterol, the cholesterol ratio and HBA1c increased significantly over time, although still staying within the reference range. In this group, hot flushes increased over time (p < 0.001). In postmenopausal women, no significant changes were observed following RRSO. At T2, serum LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, HbA1c and CRP were significantly lower in premenopausal women compared to postmenopausal women, whereas HDL was increased. CONCLUSIONS Seven months after RRSO, the lipid profile in premenopausal women had changed, although still staying within the reference range. For postmenopausal women, we did not observe any significant changes. Our results do not suggest a worsening of cardiovascular risk within 7 months of RRSO.

Abstract
Menopause is a major endocrinological shift that leads to an increased vulnerability to the risk factors for cognitive impairment and dementia. This is thought to be due to the loss of circulating estrogens, which exert many potent neuroprotective effects in the brain. Systemic replacement of estrogen post-menopause has many limitations, including increased risk for estrogen-sensitive cancers. A more promising therapeutic approach therefore might be to deliver estrogen only to the brain thus limiting adverse peripheral side effects. We examined whether we could enhance cognitive performance by delivering estrogen exclusively to the brain in post-menopausal mice. We modeled surgical menopause via bilateral ovariectomy (OVX). We treated mice with the pro-drug 10β,17β-dihydroxyestra-1,4-dien-3-one (DHED), which can be administered systemically but is converted to 17β-estradiol only in the brain. Young (2.5-month) and middle-aged (11-month-old) female C57BL/6J mice received ovariectomy and a subcutaneous implant containing vehicle (cholesterol) or DHED. At 3.5 months old (young group) and 14.5 months old (middle-aged group), mice underwent behavior testing to assess memory. DHED did not significantly alter metabolic status in middle-aged, post-menopausal mice. In both young and middle-aged mice, the brain-specific estrogen DHED improved spatial memory. Additional testing in middle-aged mice also showed that DHED improved working and recognition memory. These promising results lay the foundation for future studies aimed at determining if this intervention is as efficacious in models of dementia that have comorbid risk factors.

Abstract
Introduction Natural menopause is an inevitable biological process with significant implications for women's health. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying menopause are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the molecular and cellular changes occurring in the ovary before and after perimenopause. Methods Single-cell sequencing data from the GTEx V8 cohort (30-39: 14 individuals; 40-49: 37 individuals; 50-59: 61 individuals) and transcriptome sequencing data from ovarian tissue were analyzed. Seurat was used for single-cell sequencing data analysis, while harmony was employed for data integration. Cell differentiation trajectories were inferred using CytoTrace. CIBERSORTX assessed cell infiltration scores in ovarian tissue. WGCNA evaluated co-expression network characteristics in pre- and post-perimenopausal ovarian tissue. Functional enrichment analysis of co-expression modules was conducted using ClusterprofileR and Metascape. DESeq2 performed differential expression analysis. Master regulator analysis and signaling pathway activity analysis were carried out using MsViper and Progeny, respectively. Machine learning models were constructed using Orange3. Results We identified the differentiation trajectory of follicular cells in the ovary as ARID5B+ Granulosa -> JUN+ Granulosa -> KRT18+ Granulosa -> MT-CO2+ Granulosa -> GSTA1+ Granulosa -> HMGB1+ Granulosa. Genes driving Granulosa differentiation, including RBP1, TMSB10, SERPINE2, and TMSB4X, were enriched in ATP-dependent activity regulation pathways. Genes involved in maintaining the Granulosa state, such as DCN, ARID5B, EIF1, and HSP90AB1, were enriched in the response to unfolded protein and chaperone-mediated protein complex assembly pathways. Increased contents of terminally differentiated HMGB1+ Granulosa and GSTA1+ Granulosa were observed in the ovaries of individuals aged 50-69. Signaling pathway activity analysis indicated a gradual decrease in TGFb and MAPK pathway activity with menopause progression, while p53 pathway activity increased. Master regulator analysis revealed significant activation of transcription factors FOXR1, OTX2, MYBL2, HNF1A, and FOXN4 in the 30-39 age group, and GLI1, SMAD1, SMAD7, APP, and EGR1 in the 40-49 age group. Additionally, a diagnostic model based on 16 transcription factors (Logistic Regression L2) achieved reliable performance in determining ovarian status before and after perimenopause. Conclusion This study provides insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying natural menopause in the ovary. The findings contribute to our understanding of perimenopausal changes and offer a foundation for health management strategies for women during this transition.

Abstract
Postmenopausal obesity is a rising problem. Melatonin (Mel) is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland that regulates the circadian rhythms and improves obesity. In this experiment, ovariectomized (OVX) rats were used as a menopause model to explore the effects of Mel supplementation on lipid metabolism, body fat accumulation, and obesity. Nine-week-old female rats underwent an OVX surgery and were assigned to the following groups: control group (C), low-dose group (L, 10 mg/kg body weight (BW) Mel), medium-dose group (M, 20 mg/kg BW Mel), and high-dose group (H, 50 mg/kg BW Mel), administered by gavage for 8 weeks. The results showed that the OVX rats supplemented with low, medium, and high doses of Mel for 8 weeks exhibited reduced BW gain, perirenal fat mass, and gonads fat mass, and an increased serum irisin level. Low and high doses of Mel induced brite/beige adipocytes in the white adipose tissues. In addition, the messenger RNA levels of the fatty acid synthesis enzymes were significantly reduced after the high-dose Mel supplementation. Thus, Mel can reduce the hepatic fatty acid synthesis and promote the browning of white adipose tissues through irisin; thereby, improving obesity and body fat accumulation in OVX rats.

Abstract
Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) plays a crucial role in reproductive function in both sexes. It also mediates cellular responses to estrogens in multiple nonreproductive organ systems, many of which regulate systemic metabolic homeostasis and inflammatory processes in mammals. The loss of estrogens and/or ERα agonism during aging is associated with the emergence of several comorbid conditions, particularly in females undergoing the menopausal transition. Emerging data also suggests that male mammals likely benefit from ERα agonism if done in a way that circumvents feminizing characteristics. This has led us, and others, to speculate that tissue-specific ERα agonism may hold therapeutic potential for curtailing aging and chronic disease burden in males and females that are at high-risk of cancer and/or cardiovascular events with traditional estrogen replacement therapies. In this mini-review, we emphasize the role of ERα in the brain and liver, summarizing recent evidence that indicates these two organs systems mediate the beneficial effects of estrogens on metabolism and inflammation during aging. We also discuss how 17α-estradiol administration elicits health benefits in an ERα-dependent manner, which provides proof-of-concept that ERα may be a druggable target for attenuating aging and age-related disease burden.

Abstract
Postmenopausal women have more risk factors for metabolic syndrome, and genetic alterations in SLC30A8 (zinc transporter 8 [ZnT8]) are directly related to these factors. Our aim was to assess the relationship of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs11558471 in the SLC30A8/ZnT8 gene with cardiometabolic markers in postmenopausal women. This cross-sectional study included 53 postmenopausal women divided into two groups according to the SNP genotype (AG + GG [n = 25] and AA [n = 28]). Anthropometric, dietary, and biochemical (glycemic, lipidic, hepatic, renal, and hormonal markers) variables were evaluated and compared between groups. No differences in glycemic, hepatic, renal, and hormonal markers were found between groups. However, the group with the polymorphic allele (AG + GG) had a better lipid profile than non-carriers (total cholesterol, p = 0.041; low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-c], p = 0.035; non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [non-HDL-c], p = 0.043). Logistic regression showed that the group with polymorphic allele had lower chances of increasing levels of LDL-c (odds ratio [OR] = 0.225, p = 0.012) and non-HDL-c (OR = 0.316, p = 0.045). After adjusting for age, body mass index, physical activity, and use of diabetes and dyslipidemia drugs, only LDL-c remained associated (OR = 0.218; p = 0.017). The variant allele of SNP rs11558471 in the SLC30A8 gene was associated with better LDL-c levels, which helps reduce the risks for cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Remnant cholesterol (RC) is a highly atherogenic lipid. Previous studies have shown that RC was closely associated with many metabolism-related diseases. However, the relationship of RC with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear. This study's objective is to investigate the relationship of RC with MetS. A total of 60,799 adults who received health assessments were included in this study. RC was calculated by subtracting the directly measured values for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) from total cholesterol (TC) and divided into 5 groups according to its quintile. MetS diagnosis according to National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) definitions. Application of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and multivariate logistic regression to assess the association of RC with MetS. In RC quintile groups, the prevalence of MetS was 0.84, 1.10, 1.92, 3.87 and 37.71%, respectively. Multivariate logical regression analysis showed that RC and MetS maintained a stable independent positive correlation between both sexes. An interaction test further showed that the MetS risk associated with RC was significantly higher in women than in men. Moreover, ROC analysis results showed that RC had high accuracy in identifying MetS, especially among young and middle-aged men [(area under the curve: AUC) < 30 years: 0.9572, 30-39 years: 0.9306, 40-49 years: 0.9067]. The current study provided the first evidence of a positive association between RC and MetS, and that this correlation was stronger in women than in man, which may be due to the relative deficiency of estrogen in women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the interactive effect of supplementation with a native potential probiotic lactobacillus and 8-week high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in a menopause-induced metabolic syndrome. METHODS A total of 40 ovariectomized (OVX) Wistar rats were divided into five groups: control (OVX + Vehicle), exercise (EXE) (OVX + Exe), probiotic (Prob) (OVX + Prob), exercise and probiotic (OVX + Exe + Prob), and sham surgery. After the end of the treatment interventions, body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), visceral fat, and serum concentrations of glucose, insulin, lipid profile, and adiponectin were measured using colorimetric analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. RESULTS Data revealed a significant decrease in weight, waist circumference , visceral fat, BMI, and levels of glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, triacylglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), but an increase in high-density lipoprotein and adiponectin levels (P = 0.001), in OVX + Exe + Prob compared with the OVX + Vehicle group. CONCLUSIONS The present study indicates that native probiotic lactobacillus combined with HIIT effectively reduces body weight, visceral fat, and levels of LDL, glucose, and insulin and increases adiponectin level, although exercise contributes more to fat reduction and probiotics to insulin resistance.

Abstract
Postmenopausal women represent an important target population in need of preventative cardiometabolic approaches. The loss of estrogen following the menopause eliminates protections against metabolic dysfunction, largely due to its role in the health and function of adipose tissue. In addition, some studies associate the menopause with reduced physical activity, which could potentially exacerbate the deleterious cardiometabolic risk profile accompanying the menopause. Meanwhile, exercise has adipocyte-specific effects that may alleviate the adverse impact of estrogen loss through the menopausal transition period and beyond. Exercise thus remains the best therapeutic agent available to mitigate menopause-associated metabolic dysfunction and represents a vital behavioral strategy to prevent and alleviate health decline in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) during the menopausal transition might partly attribute to the changes in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). However, few studies were conducted to examine the associations of FSH and LH concentrations with MetS at the full range of reproductive aging, especially in the US population. The aim of this study is to examine the associations of FSH, LH, and LH/FSH ratio with the risk of MetS and severity score in the US women. METHODS Data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Women aged from 35 to 60 years were eligible. MetS was defined as having at least 3 of the following: a waist circumference ≥ 88 cm, a triglycerides level ≥ 150 mg/dL, a high density lipoprotein < 50 mg/dL, a systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 85 mm Hg or taking hypertension medications, or a fasting plasma glucose level ≥100 mg/dL or taking diabetes medications. The MetS severity score was calculated according to race/ethnicity- specific equation. RESULTS There were 3,831 women included in this study. Increases in serum FSH and LH levels per 1 SD were separately linked to a 22.6% (OR: 0.774; 95% CI: 0.646, 0.929; and P= 0.006) and 18.5% (OR: 0.815; 95% CI: 0.690, 0.962; and P= 0.006) lower risk of MetS only in postmenopausal women. Meanwhile, increases in serum FSH and LH levels per 1SD were associated with a decrease of -0.157 (95% CI :-2.967, -2.034) and -0.078 (95% CI: -2.688, -1.806) MetS severity score in perimenopausal women and -0.195 (95% CI: -2.192, -1.023) and -0.098 (95% CI:-1.884, -0.733) in postmenopausal women. However, LH/FSH ratio had no connections with the risk of MetS and MetS severity score across the menopausal transition. CONCLUSIONS Elevated serum FSH and LH levels, but not LH/FSH ratio, were associated with a lower risk of MetS and MetS severity score, especially in postmenopausal women. Therefore, serum FSH and LH levels might be efficient predictors for screening and identifying women at risk of MetS across the menopausal transition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between reproductive variables and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components among Chinese women aged 40 years and older. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4453 women aged 40 years and older in Guangxi, China. The associations between women's reproductive factors and MetS were analyzed using a logistic regression model. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS was 23.9% in this population. Women with MetS were mostly older, more likely to be postmenopausal, and had higher parity. Compared to women with one prior live birth, those with three or more live births had the highest odds of having MetS (odds ratio [OR] = 1.56; 95% CI, 1.23-1.99). Similarly, compared to premenopausal women, postmenopausal participants had higher odds of having MetS (OR = 1.86; 95% CI, 1.49-2.31). No associations were observed between MetS and abortion or with age at menarche. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that multiparity and menopausal status may be associated with the development of MetS. The inconsistency seen in epidemiological research to date calls for further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiparity is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). A more androgenic sex hormone profile, with a higher testosterone (T)/estradiol (E2) ratio, is associated with worse CVD outcomes in women and might be one mechanism linking multiparity to increased CVD risk. We investigated the relationship between parity and sex hormones at mid-to-older age. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 2979 women with data on parity and endogenous sex hormone levels from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a community-based cohort. Parity and gravidity (our exposures) were categorized as 0 (reference), 1-2, 3-4, or ≥ 5. Our outcome measures were T, E2, sex hormone binding globulin, dehydroepiandrosterone, and T/E2 ratio. Progressively adjusted linear regression was used to evaluate the association of parity/gravidity with sex hormones. RESULTS In multivariable adjusted models, there were no significant associations of parity with E2, dehydroepiandrosterone, and sex hormone binding globulin. Compared with nulliparity, after adjustment for CVD risk factors, women with 1-2 and 3-4 live births had higher T, but this was not significant for grand multiparity (≥ 5 live births). However, grand multigravidity (≥ 5 pregnancies) was associated with 10% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1%-20%) higher T and 14% (95% CI, 1%-29%) higher T/E2, compared with null gravidity. Grand multiparity was associated with an 18% (95% CI, 4%-34%) higher T/E2 ratio compared with nulliparity, after adjustment for CVD risk factors. CONCLUSIONS In this multiethnic cohort, women with grand multigravidity and grand multiparity had higher T/E2 levels, reflecting a more androgenic sex hormone profile. Longitudinal studies on sex hormones' influence on the relationship between multiparity and CVD are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radix Angelica dahuricae (RAD), a well-known traditional Chinese medicine, displays a promising effect on alleviating lipid metabolism. However, the improvement of RAD on oestrogen deficiency-induced dyslipidaemia and the underlying mechanism are unclear. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to study the effect of RAD on oestrogen deficiency-induced dyslipidaemia in ovariectomized (OVX) rats and investigate the involvement of the gut microbiota and bile acid signalling in the protective effects. METHODS Bilateral ovariectomy was executed to establish an oestrogen deficiency model. Serum biochemical indexes, liver lipids, inflammatory cytokines and histomorphology were evaluated. Gut microbes were analysed via 16S rRNA sequencing. Faecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and serum bile acids were quantified by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and ultra-high-performance chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), respectively. The expression of genes related to bile acid synthesis, metabolism and enterohepatic circulation in the liver and caecum was measured by real-time PCR. RESULTS The results displayed that RAD administration markedly decreased body weight, TC and TG levels in the serum and liver, and hepatic steatosis and inflammation in OVX rats. RAD administration could significantly regulate the gut microbial composition, increasing the abundance of Lactobacillus, increasing the content of bile salt hydrolase (BSH), and reestablishing the SCFA profile and bile acid metabolism profile in OVX rats. RAD administration could increase the gene expression of HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) and cytochrome P450 7A1(CYP7A1) and regulate the gene expression of the related receptors as well as proteins in enterohepatic circulation. CONCLUSIONS RAD alleviated oestrogen deficiency-induced dyslipidaemia in OVX rats. Modulation of the gut microbiota composition and bile acid signalling may be the underlying mechanism.

Abstract
Menopause is an aging process and an important time equivalent to one-third of a woman's lifetime. Menopause significantly increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD)/metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MFFLD), and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Women experience a variety of symptoms in the perimenopausal period, and these symptoms are distressing for most women. Many factors worsen a woman's menopausal experience, and controlling these factors may be a strategy to improve postmenopausal women's health. This review aimed to confirm the association between menopause and metabolic diseases (especially MetS), including pathophysiology, definition, prevalence, diagnosis, management, and prevention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Equol is an active metabolite of soy isoflavone. As a phytoestrogen, equol has the potential to prevent metabolic disorders such as hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and obesity. This study aimed to determine the association between equol production and metabolic syndrome (METS) in postmenopausal women. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 1,345 women aged 50 to 69 years who underwent health checkups from February 2018 to November 2021 at four health centers in Fukushima, Japan. Equol producers were defined as those with a urinary equol concentration of 1.0 μM or more. METS was defined based on Japanese diagnostic criteria including abdominal obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and glucose intolerance. The association between equol production and METS was estimated by logistic regression analysis, with adjustments for age, exercise, physical activity, and fast walking. RESULTS Of the 1,345 women, 378 (28.1%) were equol producers. The proportion of women who had METS (6.6% vs 10.9%) was significantly lower in the equol-producing group than in the nonproducing group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that equol production was significantly associated with METS (odds ratio, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.38-0.95). CONCLUSIONS Equol production was associated with a lower prevalence of METS among women aged 50 to 69 years.

Abstract
Background High serum uric acid (SUA) levels increase the risk of overall cancer morbidity and mortality, particularly for digestive malignancies. Nevertheless, the correlation between SUA level and clinical outcomes of the postoperative patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) treated by chemotherapy is unclear. This study aimed at exploring the relationship between baseline SUA level and progression-free survival (PFS), disease control rate (DCR), and safety in postoperative CRC patients receiving chemotherapy. Patients and Methods We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the relationship between baseline SUA level and PFS, DCR, and incidence of serious adverse events of 736 postoperative CRC patients treated with FOLFOX, FOLFIRI or XELOX at our center. Results Data from our center suggested that high baseline SUA level is linked to poor PFS in non-metastatic CRC patients using FOLFOX (HR=2.59, 95%CI: 1.29-11.31, p=0.018) and in male patients using FOLFIRI (HR=3.77, 95%CI: 1.57-39.49, p=0.012). In patients treated by FOLFIRI, a high SUA is also linked to a low DCR (p=0.035). In patients using FOLFOX, high baseline SUA level is also linked to a high incidence of neutropenia (p=0.0037). For patients using XELOX, there is no significant correlation between SUA level and PFS, effectiveness, or safety. Conclusions These findings imply that a high SUA level is a promising biomarker associated with poor PFS, DCR and safety of postoperative CRC patients when treated with FOLFOX or FOLFIRI.

Abstract
CONTEXT Body fat gain associated with menopause has been attributed to estradiol (E2) withdrawal. Hypoestrogenism is unlikely to be the only contributing factor, however. OBJECTIVE Given the links between sleep and metabolic health, we examined the effects of an experimental menopausal model of sleep fragmentation on energy metabolism. METHODS Twenty premenopausal women (age 21-45 years) underwent a 5-night inpatient study during the mid-to-late follicular phase (estrogenized; n = 20) and the same protocol was repeated in a subset of the participants (n = 9) following leuprolide-induced E2 suppression (hypo-estrogenized). During each 5-night study, there were 2 nights of unfragmented sleep followed by 3 nights of fragmented sleep. Indirect calorimetry was used to assess fasted resting energy expenditure (REE) and substrate oxidation. RESULTS Sleep fragmentation in the estrogenized state increased the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) and carbohydrate oxidation while decreasing fat oxidation (all P < 0.01). Similarly, in the hypo-estrogenized state without sleep fragmentation, RER and carbohydrate oxidation increased and fat oxidation decreased (all P < 0.01); addition of sleep fragmentation to the hypo-estrogenized state did not produce further effects beyond that observed for either intervention alone (P < 0.05). There were no effects of either sleep fragmentation or E2 state on REE. CONCLUSION Sleep fragmentation and hypoestrogenism each independently alter fasting substrate oxidation in a manner that may contribute to body fat gain. These findings are important for understanding mechanisms underlying propensity to body fat gain in women across the menopause transition.

Association between Cholesterol Level and the Risk of Hematologic Malignancy According to Menopausal Status: A Korean Nationwide Cohort Study. Biomedicines 2022; 10:biomedicines10071617. Abstract
Recent studies have revealed the possible association between serum cholesterol levels and hematologic malignancy (HM). However, limited information is available about how reproductive factors interact with this association. Therefore, we investigated the roles of serum cholesterol in the risk of HM according to the menopausal status. We finally identified 1,189,806 premenopausal and 1,621,604 postmenopausal women who underwent a national health screening program in 2009 using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Overall, 5449 (0.19%) developed HM. Among postmenopausal women, the inverse associations were observed between total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, and the risk of overall HM. In premenopausal women, the highest quartile of HDL-C was associated with a reduced risk of HM compared with the lowest quartile of HDL-C consistent with results in postmenopausal women (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.68–0.95]), whereas the highest quartile of triglyceride (TG) showed an increased risk of HM compared to the lowest quartile of TG, (aHR 1.22, 95% CI [1.02,1.44]) only in premenopausal women. Our finding suggests that lipid profiles are differently associated with HM risk by menopausal status.

Abstract
Background There is a limited number of studies on the dose-response relationship between serum uric acid and impaired glucose metabolism in people without diabetes, and no large-scale research exploring the relationship in women without diabetes is based on menopausal status. Consequently, the present study aimed to investigate the above relationship in United States adults without diabetes. Materials and Methods Data from 2,498 men and 2,650 women aged ≥20 years were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2016 conducted in the United States. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to evaluate the association between uric acid and impaired glucose metabolism. Restricted cubic spline analysis, sensitivity analysis, and stratified analysis by menopausal status were performed to explore the above relationships. Results A positive correlation was found between uric acid and the risk of insulin resistance in all participants (P < 0.05). In binary logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for confounding factors, compared with the lowest quartile of uric acid, the odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) of insulin resistance in the highest quartile was 1.9 (1.1-3.1) and 2.2 (1.2-4.3) in men and women, respectively. A significant positive relationship was also observed between uric acid and impaired fasting glucose and hyperinsulinemia in women, while in men, uric acid was positively associated with the risk of hyperinsulinemia but not impaired fasting glucose. Restricted cubic spline showed that the odds ratios of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia increased with elevating uric acid levels in both men and women. When stratified by menopause, the association remained significant in pre-menopausal women aged ≥20, but insignificant in post-menopausal women. Conclusion Uric acid was positively associated with the risk of impaired glucose metabolism in a cohort of United States adults, and uric acid increased the risk of insulin resistance in pre-menopausal, but not in post-menopausal women.

Abstract
The high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in persons with schizophrenia has spurred investigational efforts to study the mechanism beneath its pathophysiology. Early psychosis dysfunction is present across multiple organ systems. On this account, schizophrenia may be a multisystem disorder in which one organ system is predominantly affected and where other organ systems are also concurrently involved. Growing evidence of the overlapping neurobiological profiles of metabolic risk factors and psychiatric symptoms, such as an association with cognitive dysfunction, altered autonomic nervous system regulation, desynchrony in the resting-state default mode network, and shared genetic liability, suggest that metabolic syndrome and schizophrenia are connected via common pathways that are central to schizophrenia pathogenesis, which may be underpinned by oxytocin system dysfunction. Oxytocin, a hormone that involves in the mechanisms of food intake and metabolic homeostasis, may partly explain this piece of the puzzle in the mechanism underlying this association. Given its prosocial and anorexigenic properties, oxytocin has been administered intranasally to investigate its therapeutic potential in schizophrenia and obesity. Although the pathophysiology and mechanisms of oxytocinergic dysfunction in metabolic syndrome and schizophrenia are both complex and it is still too early to draw a conclusion upon, oxytocinergic dysfunction may yield a new mechanistic insight into schizophrenia pathogenesis and treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate anthropometric, biochemical and clinical parameters in climacteric yoga practitioners. METHODS This study investigated 108 climacteric women. We recruited 28 women between 40 and 65 years old who started yoga practices in premenopause and had already practiced for at least 5 years. As controls, we selected 30 physical activity (PA) practitioners who had practiced for at least 5 years and 50 sedentary women in the same age range. We conduced anthropometric, biochemical and blood pressure measurements. RESULTS The yoga group had significantly lower fasting blood glucose than the PA practitioners and sedentary women. Yoga practitioners also had lower weight, body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage and waist-to-height ratio; higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol; lower levels of triglycerides, insulin, Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance, uric acid, apolipoprotein B and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein; and lower frequency of metabolic syndrome, lipid accumulation product, visceral adiposity index and systolic blood pressure than the sedentary women. CONCLUSION Yoga practitioners had lower glucose serum concentrations than the PA practitioners and sedentary women. Overall, the yoga group also had better anthropometric, biochemical and clinical variables than the other groups. Although further investigation is required, yoga practice in premenopause seems to be beneficial for women when they reach menopause.

Abstract
During the postmenopausal period, there are metabolic alterations that predispose individuals to metabolic syndrome (MS), oxidative stress (OS), and the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to compare the concentrations of OS markers in postmenopausal women with and without MS. Malondialdehyde, carbonyl groups, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were quantified. We conducted a cross-sectional study: Group 1 (n = 42) included women without MS, and Group 2 (n = 58) comprised women with MS. Participants' age was similar between groups. Glucose, insulin, the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, triglycerides, uric acid, and body mass index were significantly lower in postmenopausal women without MS. OS markers were significantly lower in Group 1 vs. Group 2: malondialdehyde, 31.32 ± 14.93 vs. 40.27 ± 17.62 pmol MDA/mg dry weight (p = .01); protein carbonylation, 6325 ± 1551 vs. 7163 ± 1029 pmol PC/mg protein (p = .0003); and TAC, 1497 ± 297.3 vs. 1619 ± 278.8 pmol Trolox equivalent/mg protein (p = .041). OS markers were significantly higher in postmenopausal women with MS. Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? Oxidative stress has been implicated in numerous disease processes; however, information on the relationship between oxidative stress and metabolic syndrome among postmenopausal women remains limited.What do the results of this study add? Our results indicate that in postmenopausal Mexican women, oxidative stress markers were significantly lower in those without metabolic syndrome, whereas total antioxidant capacity was higher in those with metabolic syndrome, which could be explained as an antioxidant defense mechanism capable of neutralising excess oxidative damage markers.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This study is of interest to a broad audience because it compares the concentrations of oxidative stress markers in postmenopausal women with and without metabolic syndrome. Our study could support intervention with supplements or foods rich in antioxidants as lifestyle modifications in postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Depletion of ovarian reserve during menopausal transition raises follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) markedly and menopause is related to an increased risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study examined the relationship between FSH and MetS in postmenopausal women.We evaluated the anthropometric values, lipid profiles, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level, Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and serum adipokines levels in 219 postmenopausal women. Serum FSH and estradiol levels were significantly lower in the MetS group than in the non-MetS group. An inverse correlation was observed between FSH with body fat mass (BFM), and HOMA-IR, and a positive correlation was found between FSH and adiponectin level after adjustment for age, years since menopause, BMI, and serum estradiol.The odds ratio for MetS was higher significantly in the lowest quartile of FSH level than the highest quartile of FSH level (odd ratio = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.09-1.75). Our study showed an increased FSH level favored insulin sensitivity with a higher adiponectin and lower HOMA-IR as well as a lower incidence of MetS in postmenopausal women.These findings suggest a new approach to the role of FSH for regulating energy metabolism and for use as a biomarker of MetS risk in postmenopausal women.This systematic review is based on published researches, so there is no ethical approval required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Visceral obesity in adolescent girls increased the risk of cardiometabolic disease. A simple indicator has been developed to assess metabolic risk through visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP) in people with visceral obesity.
AIM: This study analyzed the relationship between VAI and LAP with insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in obese female adolescents.
METHODS: An observational study was conducted on 120 students at Universitas Diponegoro. VAI was obtained from calculation formulations which includes body mass index, waist circumference (WC), triglycerides (TGs), and High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. LAP was obtained from calculation formulation which include WC and TGs. IR values were obtained based on the calculation of homeostasis for assessment models IR. The metabolic syndrome score (cMetS) was obtained by the calculation of components of WC, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, TG, and HDL cholesterol. Bivariate analysis using the Spearman Rank correlation test.
RESULTS: We found that 40% of subjects had a VAI score that was considered at risk. As many as 20.8% of obese adolescent girls experience MetS while the other 79.2% are pre-metabolic syndrome and 83.3% of subjects have experienced IR. VAI showed a significant relationship with IR (p ≤ 0.001; r = 0.667) and cMetS (p = 0.007; p = 0.245). LAP showed a significant relationship with IR (p < 0,001; r = 0,385) and MS (p < 0,001; r = 0.372).
CONCLUSION: We found that VAI and LAP could be an indicator for estimating IR and MS in obese female adolescent.

Abstract
Malondialdehyde (MDA) represents one of the final products of lipid peroxidation that is thought to be enhanced and accelerated in patients affected by bipolar disorder (BD). Purpose of the present article is to critically summarize the available data about MDA as a candidate biomarker for BD. First, we carried out a systematic review of the literature selecting those papers that evaluated MDA levels in BD. Then, we performed two separate meta-analyses: one of the studies that compared healthy controls (HC) with unmedicated BD and one with the studies that assessed MDA levels before and after treatment in BD, showing that bipolar patients experience more oxidative stress than healthy subjects and that treatment is effective in reducing MDA levels. In the first set of studies, we also explored through a meta-regression whether age, gender and experiencing an episode specifically influenced the difference between BD and HC in MDA levels. Bipolar patients compared to healthy subjects had higher MDA levels (SMD: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.23-1.64). Age (p < 0.01), gender (p < 0.01) and the presence of a current mood episode (p < 0.01) significantly influenced MDA plasma/serum levels. Specifically, studies that included more female, older subjects and more BD in euthymia were more likely to have higher MDA levels. Finally, patients after treatment had lower levels of MDA compared to baseline (SMD: -0.52, 95% CI: -0.85 -0.19). More studies are needed to draw definitive conclusions.

Abstract
Neurological aging is frequently viewed as a linear process of decline, whereas in reality, it is a dynamic non-linear process. The dynamic nature of neurological aging is exemplified during midlife in the female brain. To investigate fundamental mechanisms of midlife aging that underlie risk for development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in late life, we investigated the brain at greatest risk for the disease, the aging female brain. Outcomes of our research indicate that mid-life aging in the female is characterized by the emergence of three phases: early chronological (pre-menopause), endocrinological (peri-menopause) and late chronological (post-menopause) aging. The endocrinological aging program is sandwiched between early and late chronological aging. Throughout the three stages of midlife aging, two systems of biology, metabolic and immune, are tightly integrated through a network of signaling cascades. The network of signaling between these two systems of biology underlie an orchestrated sequence of adaptative starvation responses that shift the brain from near exclusive dependence on a single fuel, glucose, to utilization of an auxiliary fuel derived from lipids, ketone bodies. The dismantling of the estrogen control of glucose metabolism during mid-life aging is a critical contributor to the shift in fuel systems and emergence of dynamic neuroimmune phenotype. The shift in fuel reliance, puts the largest reservoir of local fatty acids, white matter, at risk for catabolism as a source of lipids to generate ketone bodies through astrocytic beta oxidation. APOE4 genotype accelerates the tipping point for emergence of the bioenergetic crisis. While outcomes derived from research conducted in the female brain are not directly translatable to the male brain, the questions addressed in a female centric program of research are directly applicable to investigation of the male brain. Like females, males with AD exhibit deficits in the bioenergetic system of the brain, activation of the immune system and hallmark Alzheimer's pathologies. The drivers and trajectory of mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration in the male brain will undoubtedly share common aspects with the female in addition to factors unique to the male. Preclinical and clinical evidence indicate that midlife endocrine aging can also be a transitional bridge to autoimmune disorders. Collectively, the data indicate that endocrinological aging is a critical period "tipping point" in midlife which can initiate emergence of the prodromal stage of late-onset-Alzheimer's disease. Interventions that target both immune and metabolic shifts that occur during midlife aging have the potential to alter the trajectory of Alzheimer's risk in late life. Further, to achieve precision medicine for AD, chromosomal sex is a critical variable to consider along with APOE genotype, other genetic risk factors and stage of disease.
