Abstract
An interbody fusion cage (Cage) is crucial in spinal decompression and fusion procedures for restoring normal vertebral curvature and rebuilding spinal stability. Currently, these Cages suffer from issues related to mismatched elastic modulus and insufficient bone integration capability. Therefore, a gel-casting technique is utilized to fabricate a biomimetic porous titanium alloy material from Ti6Al4V powder. The biomimetic porous Ti6Al4V is compared with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and 3D-printed Ti6Al4V materials and their respective Cages. Systematic validation is performed through mechanical testing, in vitro cell, in vivo rabbit bone defect implantation, and ovine anterior cervical discectomy and fusion experiments to evaluate the mechanical and biological performance of the materials. Although all three materials demonstrate good biocompatibility and osseointegration properties, the biomimetic porous Ti6Al4V, with its excellent mechanical properties and a structure closely resembling bone trabecular tissue, exhibited superior bone ingrowth and osseointegration performance. Compared to the PEEK and 3D-printed Ti6Al4V Cages, the biomimetic porous Ti6Al4V Cage outperforms in terms of intervertebral fusion performance, achieving excellent intervertebral fusion without the need for bone grafting, thereby enhancing cervical vertebra stability. This biomimetic porous Ti6Al4V Cage offers cost-effectiveness, presenting significant potential for clinical applications in spinal surgery.

Abstract
Additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable zinc (Zn) alloys have recently emerged as promising porous bone-substituting materials, due to their moderate degradation rates, good biocompatibility, geometrically ordered microarchitectures, and bone-mimicking mechanical properties. While AM Zn alloy porous scaffolds mimicking the mechanical properties of trabecular bone have been previously reported, mimicking the mechanical properties of cortical bone remains a formidable challenge. To overcome this challenge, we developed the AM Zn-3Mg alloy. We used laser powder bed fusion to process Zn-3Mg and compared it with pure Zn. The AM Zn-3Mg alloy exhibited significantly refined grains and a unique microstructure with interlaced α-Zn/Mg2Zn11 phases. The compressive properties of the solid Zn-3Mg specimens greatly exceeded their tensile properties, with a compressive yield strength of up to 601 MPa and an ultimate strain of >60 %. We then designed and fabricated functionally graded porous structures with a solid core and achieved cortical bone-mimicking mechanical properties, including a compressive yield strength of >120 MPa and an elastic modulus of ≈20 GPa. The biodegradation rates of the Zn-3Mg specimens were lower than those of pure Zn and could be adjusted by tuning the AM process parameters. The Zn-3Mg specimens also exhibited improved biocompatibility as compared to pure Zn, including higher metabolic activity and enhanced osteogenic behavior of MC3T3 cells cultured with the extracts from the Zn-3Mg alloy specimens. Altogether, these results marked major progress in developing AM porous biodegradable metallic bone substitutes, which paved the way toward clinical adoption of Zn-based scaffolds for the treatment of load-bearing bony defects. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Our study presents a significant advancement in the realm of biodegradable metallic bone substitutes through the development of an additively manufactured Zn-3Mg alloy. This novel alloy showcases refined grains and a distinctive microstructure, enabling the fabrication of functionally graded porous structures with mechanical properties resembling cortical bone. The achieved compressive yield strength and elastic modulus signify a critical leap toward mimicking the mechanical behavior of load-bearing bone. Moreover, our findings reveal tunable biodegradation rates and enhanced biocompatibility compared to pure Zn, emphasizing the potential clinical utility of Zn-based scaffolds for treating load-bearing bony defects. This breakthrough opens doors for the wider adoption of zinc-based materials in regenerative orthopedics.

Abstract
Additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable porous iron-manganese (FeMn) alloys have recently been developed as promising bone-substituting biomaterials. However, their corrosion fatigue behavior has not yet been studied. Here, we present the first study on the corrosion fatigue behavior of an extrusion-based AM porous Fe35Mn alloy under cyclic loading in air and in the revised simulated body fluid (r-SBF), including the fatigue crack morphology and distribution in the porous structure. We hypothesized that the fatigue behavior of the architected AM Fe35Mn alloy would be strongly affected by the simultaneous biodegradation process. We defined the endurance limit as the maximum stress at which the scaffolds could undergo 3 million loading cycles without failure. The endurance limit of the scaffolds was determined to be 90 % of their yield strength in air, but only 60 % in r-SBF. No notable crack formation in the specimens tested in air was observed even after loading up to 90 % of their yield strength. As for the specimens tested in r-SBF, however, cracks formed in the specimens subjected to loads exceeding 60 % of their yield strength appeared to initiate on the periphery and propagate toward the internal struts. Altogether, the results show that the extrusion-based AM porous Fe35Mn alloy is capable of tolerating up to 60 % of its yield strength for up to 3 million cycles, which corresponds to 1.5 years of use of load-bearing implants subjected to repetitive gait cycles. The fatigue performance of the alloy thus further enhances its potential for trabecular bone substitution subjected to cyclic compressive loading. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Fatigue behavior of extrusion-based AM porous Fe35Mn alloy scaffolds in air and revised simulated body fluid was studied. The Fe35Mn alloy scaffolds endured 90 % of their yield strength for up to 3 × 106 loading cycles in air. Moreover, the scaffolds tolerated 3 × 106 loading cycles at 60 % of their yield strength in revised simulated body fluid. The Fe35Mn alloy scaffolds exhibited a capacity of withstanding 1.5-year physiological loading when used as bone implants.

Abstract
The combination of bioactive Zn-2Mg alloy and additively manufactured porous scaffold is expected to achieve customizable biodegradable performance and enhanced bone regeneration. Herein, Zn-2Mg alloy scaffolds with different porosities, including 40% (G-40-2), 60% (G-60-2), and 80% (G-80-2), and different unit sizes, including 1.5 mm (G-60-1.5), 2 mm (G-60-2), and 2.5 mm (G-60-2.5), are manufactured by a triply periodic minimal surface design and a reliable laser powder bed fusion process. With the same unit size, compressive strength (CS) and elastic modulus (EM) of scaffolds substantially decrease with increasing porosities. With the same porosity, CS and EM just slightly decrease with increasing unit sizes. The weight loss after degradation increases with increasing porosities and decreasing unit sizes. In vivo tests indicate that Zn-2Mg alloy scaffolds exhibit satisfactory biocompatibility and osteogenic ability. The osteogenic ability of scaffolds is mainly determined by their physical and chemical characteristics. Scaffolds with lower porosities and smaller unit sizes show better osteogenesis due to their suitable pore size and larger surface area. The results indicate that the biodegradable performance of scaffolds can be accurately regulated on a large scale by structure design and the additively manufactured Zn-2Mg alloy scaffolds have improved osteogenic ability for treating bone defects.

Abstract
Electrospinning is a facile popular method for the creation of nano-micro fibers tissue engineering scaffolds. Here, polycaprolactone (PCL)/collagen (COL): polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) scaffolds (PCL/COL: PVP) were fabricated for bone regeneration. Various concentrations of Cephalexin (CEF) (0.5, 1, 1.5 wt. %) were added to PCL/COL: PVP scaffold to provide an antibacterial scaffold, and different concentrations of hydroxyapatite (HA) (1, 2, 5 wt. %) was electrospray on the surface of the scaffolds. The PCL/COL: PVP scaffold contained 1.5% CEF and coated with 2% HA was introduced as the best sample and in-vitro tests were performed on this scaffold based on the antibacterial and MTT test results. Morphology observations demonstrated a bead-free uniform combined nano-micro fibrous structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction tests confirmed the successful formation of the scaffolds and the wettability, swelling, and biodegradability evaluations of the scaffolds confirmed the hydrophilicity nature of the scaffold with high swelling properties and suitable biodegradation ratio. The scaffolds supported cell adhesion and represented high alkaline phosphatase activity. CEF loading led to antibacterial properties of the designed scaffolds and showed a suitable sustained release rate within 48 h. It seems that the electrospun PCL/COL: PVP scaffold loaded with 1.5% CEF and coated with 2% HA can be useful for bone regeneration applications that need further evaluation in the near future.

Abstract
The regeneration of osteochondral tissue necessitates the re-establishment of a gradient owing to the unique characteristics and healing potential of the chondral and osseous phases. As the self-healing capacity of hyaline cartilage is limited, timely mechanical support during neo-cartilage formation is crucial to achieving optimal repair efficacy. In this study, we devised a biodegradable bilayered scaffold, comprising chondroitin sulfate (CS) hydrogel to regenerate chondral tissue and a porous pure zinc (Zn) scaffold for regeneration of the underlying bone as mechanical support for the cartilage layer. The photocured CS hydrogel possessed a compressive strength of 82 kPa, while the porous pure Zn scaffold exhibited a yield strength of 11 MPa and a stiffness of 0.8 GPa. Such mechanical properties are similar to values reported for cancellous bone. In vitro biological experiments demonstrated that the bilayered scaffold displayed favorable cytocompatibility and promoted chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stem cells. Upon implantation, the scaffold facilitated the simultaneous regeneration of bone and cartilage tissue in a porcine model, resulting in (i) a smoother cartilage surface, (ii) more hyaline-like cartilage, and (iii) a superior integration into the adjacent host tissue. Our bilayered scaffold exhibits significant potential for clinical application in osteochondral regeneration.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and their respective alloys have attracted great attention as biodegradable bone-implant materials due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, the poor mechanical strength of Zn alloys and the rapid degradation rate of Mg alloys limit their clinical application. The manufacture of Zn and Mg bimetals may be a promising way to improve their mechanical and degradation properties. Here we report on Zn/Mg multilayered composites prepared via an accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process. With an increase in the number of ARB cycles, the thicknesses of the Zn layer and the Mg layer were reduced, while a large number of heterogeneous interfaces were introduced into the Zn/Mg multilayered composites. The composite samples after 14 ARB cycles showed the highest yield strength of 411±3 MPa and highest ultimate tensile strength of 501±3 MPa among all the ARB processed samples, significantly higher than those of the Zn/Zn and Mg/Mg multilayered samples. The Zn and Mg layers remained continuous in the Zn/Mg composite samples after annealing at 150 °C for 10 min, resulting in a decrease in yield strength from 411±3 MPa to 349±3 MPa but an increase in elongation from 8±1% to 28±1%. The degradation rate of the Zn/Mg multilayered composite samples in Hanks' solution was ranged from 127±18 µm/y to 6±1 µm/y. The Zn/Mg multilayered composites showed over 100% cell viability with their 25% and 12.5% extracts in relation to MG-63 cells after culturing for 3 d, indicating excellent cytocompatibility. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This work reports a biodegradable Zn/Mg multilayered composite prepared by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process. The yield and ultimate tensile strength of the Zn/Mg multilayered composites were improved due to grain refinement and the introduction of a large number of heterogeneous interfaces. The composite samples after 14 ARB cycles showed the highest yield strength of 411±3 MPa and highest ultimate tensile strength of 501±3 MPa among all the ARB processed samples. The degradation rate of the Zn/Mg multilayered composite meets the required degradation rate for biodegradable bone-implant materials. The results demonstrated that it is a very promising approach to improve the strength and biocompatibility of biodegradable Zn-based alloys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tissue-engineered bone materials are an effective tool to repair bone defects. In this study, a novel biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL)/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/calcium sulfate (CS) composite scaffold was prepared by using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. METHODS Scanning electron microscopy, gas expansion displacement, and contact goniometry were used to examine the 3D-printed PCL/β-TCP/CS composite scaffolds. The results showed that the PCL/β-TCP/CS scaffolds possessed controllable porosity, hydrophobicity, biodegradability, and suitable apatite mineralization ability. To confirm the bone regenerative properties of the fabricated composite scaffolds, scaffold extracts were prepared and evaluated for their cytotoxicity to bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and their ability to induce and osteogenic differentiation in BMSCs. RESULTS The PCL/β-TCP/CS composite scaffolds induced a higher level of differentiation of BMSCs than the PCL scaffolds, which occurred through the expression of bone metastasis-related genes. The New Zealand white rabbit radial defect experiment further demonstrated that PCL/β-TCP/CS scaffolds could promote bone regeneration. CONCLUSIONS In summary, the 3D-printed PCL/β-TCP/CS composite porous artificial bone has good cytocompatibility, osteoinductivity, and histocompatibility, which make it an ideal bone material for tissue engineering.

Abstract
The utilization of biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based implants for restoration of bone function following trauma represents a transformative approach in orthopaedic application. One such alloy, magnesium-10 weight percent gadolinium (Mg-10Gd), has been specifically developed to address the rapid degradation of Mg while enhancing its mechanical properties to promote bone healing. Previous studies have demonstrated that Mg-10Gd exhibits favorable osseointegration; however, it exhibits distinct ultrastructural adaptation in comparison to conventional implants like titanium (Ti). A crucial aspect that remains unexplored is the impact of Mg-10Gd degradation on the bone microarchitecture. To address this, we employed hierarchical three-dimensional imaging using synchrotron radiation in conjunction with image-based finite element modelling. By using the methods outlined, the vascular porosity, lacunar porosity and the lacunar-canaliculi network (LCN) morphology of bone around Mg-10Gd in comparison to Ti in a rat model from 4 weeks to 20 weeks post-implantation was investigated. Our investigation revealed that within our observation period, the degradation of Mg-10Gd implants was associated with significantly lower (p < 0.05) lacunar density in the surrounding bone, compared to Ti. Remarkably, the LCN morphology and the fluid flow analysis did not significantly differ for both implant types. In summary, a more pronounced lower lacunae distribution rather than their morphological changes was detected in the surrounding bone upon the degradation of Mg-10Gd implants. This implies potential disparities in bone remodelling rates when compared to Ti implants. Our findings shed light on the intricate relationship between Mg-10Gd degradation and bone microarchitecture, contributing to a deeper understanding of the implications for successful osseointegration.

Abstract
This investigation aims to assess the mechanical behavior and energy absorption properties of the open-cell nickel foams. The metal foams produced by electroforming of nickel on PU foams, also a heat treatment has applied to evaporate the PU foam, then a uniaxial compression test was applied to measure maximum compressive strength, energy absorption density, efficiency, and normalized stresses. The results indicate that compared with typical open-cell nickel foams and polymer precursors when the electroforming time is 12 h and a heat treatment has applied, the aforementioned properties of the metal foams had a significant improvement. Improvement of properties will change by increasing the time of electroforming. The heat treatment improved the energy absorption density of open-cell nickel foams for 3.7 times. For the best sample which is a metal foam with 12 h of electroforming with heat treatment the first maximum compressive strength, energy absorption density, and energy absorption efficiency reach 1.84 (MPa), 3.29 (mJ/mm3), and 73%, respectively.

Abstract
Additively manufactured (AM) degradable porous metallic biomaterials offer unique opportunities for satisfying the design requirements of an ideal bone substitute. Among the currently available biodegradable metals, iron has the highest elastic modulus, meaning that it would benefit the most from porous design. Given the successful preclinical applications of such biomaterials for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, the moderate compatibility of AM porous iron with osteoblast-like cells, reported in earlier studies, has been surprising. This may be because, as opposed to static in vitro conditions, the biodegradation products of iron in vivo are transported away and excreted. To better mimic the in situ situations of biodegradable biomaterials after implantation, we compared the biodegradation behavior and cytocompatibility of AM porous iron under static conditions to the conditions with dynamic in situ-like fluid flow perfusion in a bioreactor. Furthermore, the compatibility of these scaffolds with four different cell types was evaluated to better understand the implications of these implants for the complex process of natural wound healing. These included endothelial cells, L929 fibroblasts, RAW264.7 macrophage-like cells, and osteoblastic MG-63 cells. The biodegradation rate of the scaffolds was significantly increased in the perfusion bioreactor as compared to static immersion. Under either condition, the compatibility with L929 cells was the best. Moreover, the compatibility with all the cell types was much enhanced under physiomimetic dynamic flow conditions as compared to static biodegradation. Our study highlights the importance of physiomimetic culture conditions and cell type selection when evaluating the cytocompatibility of degradable biomaterials in vitro. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Additively manufactured (AM) degradable porous metals offer unique opportunities for the treatment of large bony defects. Despite the successful preclinical applications of biodegradable iron in the cardiovascular field, the moderate compatibility of AM porous iron with osteoblast-like cells was reported. To better mimic the in vivo condition, we compared the biodegradation behavior and cytocompatibility of AM porous iron under static condition to dynamic perfusion. Furthermore, the compatibility of these scaffolds with various cell types was evaluated to better simulate the process of natural wound healing. Our study suggests that AM porous iron holds great promise for orthopedic applications, while also highlighting the importance of physio-mimetic culture conditions and cell type selection when evaluating the cytocompatibility of degradable biomaterials in vitro.

Abstract
Background Currently, metal implants are widely used in orthopedic surgeries, including fracture fixation, spinal fusion, joint replacement, and bone tumor defect repair. However, conventional implants are difficult to be customized according to the recipient's skeletal anatomy and defect characteristics, leading to difficulties in meeting the individual needs of patients. Additive manufacturing (AM) or three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, an advanced digital fabrication technique capable of producing components with complex and precise structures, offers opportunities for personalization. Methods We systematically reviewed the literature on 3D printing orthopedic metal implants over the past 10 years. Relevant animal, cellular, and clinical studies were searched in PubMed and Web of Science. In this paper, we introduce the 3D printing method and the characteristics of biometals and summarize the properties of 3D printing metal implants and their clinical applications in orthopedic surgery. On this basis, we discuss potential possibilities for further generalization and improvement. Results 3D printing technology has facilitated the use of metal implants in different orthopedic procedures. By combining medical images from techniques such as CT and MRI, 3D printing technology allows the precise fabrication of complex metal implants based on the anatomy of the injured tissue. Such patient-specific implants not only reduce excessive mechanical strength and eliminate stress-shielding effects, but also improve biocompatibility and functionality, increase cell and nutrient permeability, and promote angiogenesis and bone growth. In addition, 3D printing technology has the advantages of low cost, fast manufacturing cycles, and high reproducibility, which can shorten patients' surgery and hospitalization time. Many clinical trials have been conducted using customized implants. However, the use of modeling software, the operation of printing equipment, the high demand for metal implant materials, and the lack of guidance from relevant laws and regulations have limited its further application. Conclusions There are advantages of 3D printing metal implants in orthopedic applications such as personalization, promotion of osseointegration, short production cycle, and high material utilization. With the continuous learning of modeling software by surgeons, the improvement of 3D printing technology, the development of metal materials that better meet clinical needs, and the improvement of laws and regulations, 3D printing metal implants can be applied to more orthopedic surgeries. The translational potential of this paper Precision, intelligence, and personalization are the future direction of orthopedics. It is reasonable to believe that 3D printing technology will be more deeply integrated with artificial intelligence, 4D printing, and big data to play a greater role in orthopedic metal implants and eventually become an important part of the digital economy. We aim to summarize the latest developments in 3D printing metal implants for engineers and surgeons to design implants that more closely mimic the morphology and function of native bone.

Abstract
Bone is a highly vascularized tissue, and the ability of magnesium (Mg) to promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis has been widely studied. The aim of bone tissue engineering is to repair bone tissue defects and restore its normal function. Various Mg-enriched materials that can promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis have been made. Here, we introduce several types of orthopedic clinical uses of Mg; recent advances in the study of metal materials releasing Mg ions (pure Mg, Mg alloy, coated Mg, Mg-rich composite, ceramic, and hydrogel) are reviewed. Most studies suggest that Mg can enhance vascularized osteogenesis in bone defect areas. Additionally, we summarized some research on the mechanisms related to vascularized osteogenesis. In addition, the experimental strategies for the research of Mg-enriched materials in the future are put forward, in which clarifying the specific mechanism of promoting angiogenesis is the crux.

Abstract
With the advancement of additive manufacturing (AM), customized vascular stents can now be fabricated to fit the curvatures and sizes of a narrowed or blocked blood vessel, thereby reducing the possibility of thrombosis and restenosis. More importantly, AM enables the design and fabrication of complex and functional stent unit cells that would otherwise be impossible to realize with conventional manufacturing techniques. Additionally, AM makes fast design iterations possible while also shortening the development time of vascular stents. This has led to the emergence of a new treatment paradigm in which custom and on-demand-fabricated stents will be used for just-in-time treatments. This review is focused on the recent advances in AM vascular stents aimed at meeting the mechanical and biological requirements. First, the biomaterials suitable for AM vascular stents are listed and briefly described. Second, we review the AM technologies that have been so far used to fabricate vascular stents as well as the performances they have achieved. Subsequently, the design criteria for the clinical application of AM vascular stents are discussed considering the currently encountered limitations in materials and AM techniques. Finally, the remaining challenges are highlighted and some future research directions are proposed to realize clinically-viable AM vascular stents. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Vascular stents have been widely used for the treatment of vascular disease. The recent progress in additive manufacturing (AM) has provided unprecedented opportunities for revolutionizing traditional vascular stents. In this manuscript, we review the applications of AM to the design and fabrication of vascular stents. This is an interdisciplinary subject area that has not been previously covered in the published review articles. Our objective is to not only present the state-of-the-art of AM biomaterials and technologies but to also critically assess the limitations and challenges that need to be overcome to speed up the clinical adoption of AM vascular stents with both anatomical superiority and mechanical and biological functionalities that exceed those of the currently available mass-produced devices.

Abstract
Biodegradable metallic materials are increasingly gaining ground in medical applications. Zn-based alloys show a degradation rate between those recorded for Mg-based materials with the fastest degradation rate and Fe-based materials with the slowest degradation rate. From the perspective of medical complications, it is essential to understand the size and nature of the degradation products developed from biodegradable materials, as well as the stage at which these residues are eliminated from the body. This paper presents investigations conducted on the corrosion/degradation products of an experimental material (ZnMgY alloy in cast and homogenized state) after immersion tests in three physiological solutions (Dulbecco's, Ringer's and simulated body fluid (SBF)). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to highlight the macroscopic and microscopic aspects of corrosion products and their effects on the surface. An X-ray energy dispersive detector (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) provided general information about the compounds based on their non-metallic character. The pH of the electrolyte solution was recorded for 72 h during immersion. The pH variation of the solution confirmed the main reactions proposed for the corrosion of ZnMg. The agglomerations of corrosion products were on the micrometer scale, mainly oxides, hydroxides and carbonates or phosphates. The corrosion effects on the surface were homogeneously spread, with a tendency to connect and form cracks or larger corrosion zones, transforming the pitting corrosion pattern into a generalized one. It was noticed that the alloy's microstructure strongly influences the corrosion characteristics.

Abstract
Bone tissue engineering (BTE) has become a hopeful potential treatment strategy for large bone defects, including bone tumors, trauma, and extensive fractures, where the self-healing property of bone cannot repair the defect. Bone tissue engineering is composed of three main elements: progenitor/stem cells, scaffold, and growth factors/biochemical cues. Among the various biomaterial scaffolds, hydrogels are broadly used in bone tissue engineering owing to their biocompatibility, controllable mechanical characteristics, osteoconductive, and osteoinductive properties. During bone tissue engineering, angiogenesis plays a central role in the failure or success of bone reconstruction via discarding wastes and providing oxygen, minerals, nutrients, and growth factors to the injured microenvironment. This review presents an overview of bone tissue engineering and its requirements, hydrogel structure and characterization, the applications of hydrogels in bone regeneration, and the promising roles of hydrogels in bone angiogenesis during bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
This study aimed to establish a surface modification technology for ZK60 magnesium alloy implants that can degrade uniformly over time and promote bone healing. It proposes a special micro-arc oxidation (MAO) treatment on ZK60 alloy that enables the composite electrolytes to create a coating with better corrosion resistance and solve the problems of uneven and excessive degradation. A magnesium alloy bone screw made in this way was able to promote the bone healing reaction after implantation in rabbits. Additionally, it was found that the MAO-treated samples could be sustained in simulated body-fluid solution, exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance and electrochemical stability. The Ca ions deposited in the MAO coating were not cytotoxic and were beneficial in enhancing bone healing after implantation.

Abstract
Bone defect repair is a complicated clinical problem, particularly when the defect is relatively large and the bone is unable to repair itself. Magnesium and its alloys have been introduced as versatile biomaterials to repair bone defects because of their excellent biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, bone-mimicking biomechanical features, and non-toxic and biodegradable properties. Therefore, magnesium alloys have become a popular research topic in the field of implants to treat critical bone defects. This review explores the popular Mg alloy research topics in the field of bone defects. Bibliometric analyses demonstrate that the degradation control and mechanical properties of Mg alloys are the main research focus for the treatment of bone defects. Furthermore, the additive manufacturing (AM) of Mg alloys is a promising approach for treating bone defects using implants with customized structures and functions. This work reviews the state of research on AM-Mg alloys and the current challenges in the field, mainly from the two aspects of controlling the degradation rate and the fabrication of excellent mechanical properties. First, the advantages, current progress, and challenges of the AM of Mg alloys for further application are discussed. The main mechanisms that lead to the rapid degradation of AM-Mg are then highlighted. Next, the typical methods and processing parameters of laser powder bed fusion fabrication on the degradation characteristics of Mg alloys are reviewed. The following section discusses how the above factors affect the mechanical properties of AM-Mg and the recent research progress. Finally, the current status of research on AM-Mg for bone defects is summarized, and some research directions for AM-Mg to drive the application of clinical orthopedic implants are suggested.

Abstract
The treatment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) has undergone a very significant transformation in recent decades, and endovascular interventions have gradually become one of the most common treatments. As permanent metal stents can cause some degree of long-term damage to patients, biodegradable stent materials are emerging as attractive potential alternatives. By reviewing the current research status and the advantages and disadvantages of existing biodegradable biomaterials, this review expects to provide a valuable reference for subsequent research on biodegradable biomaterials.

Abstract
Lumbar fusion often remains the last treatment option for various acute and chronic spinal conditions, including infectious and degenerative diseases. Placement of a cage in the intervertebral space has become a routine clinical treatment for spinal fusion surgery to provide sufficient biomechanical stability, which is required to achieve bony ingrowth of the implant. Routinely used cages for clinical application are made of titanium (Ti) or polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Ti has been used since the 1980s; however, its shortcomings, such as impaired radiographical opacity and higher elastic modulus compared to bone, have led to the development of PEEK cages, which are associated with reduced stress shielding as well as no radiographical artefacts. Since PEEK is bioinert, its osteointegration capacity is limited, which in turn enhances fibrotic tissue formation and peri-implant infections. To address shortcomings of both of these biomaterials, interdisciplinary teams have developed biodegradable cages. Rooted in promising preclinical large animal studies, a hollow cylindrical cage (Hydrosorb™) made of 70:30 poly-l-lactide-co-d, l-lactide acid (PLDLLA) was clinically studied. However, reduced bony integration and unfavourable long-term clinical outcomes prohibited its routine clinical application. More recently, scaffold-guided bone regeneration (SGBR) with application of highly porous biodegradable constructs is emerging. Advancements in additive manufacturing technology now allow the cage designs that match requirements, such as stiffness of surrounding tissues, while providing long-term biomechanical stability. A favourable clinical outcome has been observed in the treatment of various bone defects, particularly for 3D-printed composite scaffolds made of medical-grade polycaprolactone (mPCL) in combination with a ceramic filler material. Therefore, advanced cage design made of mPCL and ceramic may also carry initial high spinal forces up to the time of bony fusion and subsequently resorb without clinical side effects. Furthermore, surface modification of implants is an effective approach to simultaneously reduce microbial infection and improve tissue integration. We present a design concept for a scaffold surface which result in osteoconductive and antimicrobial properties that have the potential to achieve higher rates of fusion and less clinical complications. In this review, we explore the preclinical and clinical studies which used bioresorbable cages. Furthermore, we critically discuss the need for a cutting-edge research program that includes comprehensive preclinical in vitro and in vivo studies to enable successful translation from bench to bedside. We develop such a conceptual framework by examining the state-of-the-art literature and posing the questions that will guide this field in the coming years.

Abstract
Advancements in biomaterial manufacturing technologies calls for improved standards of fabrication and testing. Currently 3D-printable resins are being formulated which exhibit the potential to rapidly prototype biocompatible devices. For validation purposes, 3D-printed materials were subjected to a hierarchical validation onto the chorioallantoic membrane of the developing chicken, better known as the HET CAM assay. Working along these lines, prints made from poly-(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate (PEGDA), which had undergone appropriate post-print processing, outperformed other commercial resins. This material passed all tests without displaying adverse effects, as experienced with other resin types. Based on this finding, the micro bioreactors (MBR) design, first made of PDMS and that also passed with cell tests on the HET-CAM, was finally printed in PEGDA, and applied in vivo. Following this workflow shows the applicability of 3D-printable resins for biomedical device manufacturing, consents to adherence to the present standards of the 3R criteria in material research and development, and provides flexibility and fast iteration of design and test cycles for MBR adaptation and optimization.

Abstract
This paper describes the influence of defects occurring in struts under tension, obtained using the additive method of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), on the stress and strain distributions. The study used struts of different thicknesses separated from Ti-6Al-4V diamond lattice structures. For numerical modeling of stress and strain fields, models that reflect the realistic shape of the tested struts with their imperfections were used. The shape of the diamond structure struts was obtained based on microtomographic measurements. Based on the results obtained, the influence of defects in the material structure on the stress and strain distribution was analyzed. It was observed that the main factor influencing the stress and strain distribution in the struts are micronotches on their external surface. These imperfections have a significantly greater impact on the stress and strain concentration than the micropores inside. Furthermore, the interactions of the imperfections are also important, which in turn affects the stress distributions and the formation of bands of high-stress values inside the material. The relationship between the presence of micropores, the stress–strain curves, and the mechanical properties of the material was also assessed.

Abstract
Biodegradable metals (BM) and additive manufacturing (AM) are regarded revolutionary biomaterials and biofabrication technologies for bone repairing metal implants, the combination of both, namely AM of BM, is thus expected to solve the dual technical difficulties including "conventional medical metals are biologically inert and exist in the human body permanently" and "conventional manufacturing processes are inadequate to fabricate personalized implants of complicated structure". This work additively manufactured biodegradable Zn-Mg alloy porous scaffolds by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). By using the pre-alloyed Zn-xMg (x = 1, 2 and 5 wt.%) powder and the optimized processing conditions, high fusion quality with the relative density greater than 99.5% was confirmed for the L-PBF parts. The influence of Mg content on microstructure, mechanical properties, in vitro corrosion, cytocompatibility, in vivo degradation, biocompatibility and osteogenic effect was investigated. Fine α-Zn grains and precipitation phases including Mg2Zn11 and MgZn2 were observed in the Zn-xMg L-PBF parts. The hardness increased, and the strength increases firstly and then decreased with increasing the Mg content. The compressive strength and elastic modulus of Zn-1Mg porous scaffolds reached the highest as 40.9 ± 0.4 MPa and 1.17 ± 0.11 GPa, respectively, equivalent to those of cancellous bone. The corrosion rate and cell viability slightly rose with increasing the Mg content. Histological analysis after 6-week and 12-week implantation in rabbit femurs showed enhanced bone formation around the Zn-1Mg porous scaffolds compared with pure Zn counterparts. In summary, Zn-1Mg porous scaffolds produced by L-PBF presented promising results to fulfill customized requirements of biodegradable bone implants. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Additive manufacturing of biodegradable metal porous scaffolds is expected to solve the dual challenges from customized structures and bioactive function required for bone implants. It was the first to present a systematic in vitro and in vivo investigation into the compositions, microstructure, mechanical properties, biodegradation, biocompatibility and osteogenic effect of additively manufactured Zn-Mg alloy porous scaffolds. Reliable formation quality and performance evaluation was achieved by using the pre-alloyed Zn-xMg (x = 1, 2 and 5 wt.%) powder and the optimized laser powder bed fusion process. Although the Zn-1Mg scaffolds exhibited promising mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and osteogenic effect, their degradation rate needs to be further accelerated compared with the term of bone reconstruction.

Porous Magnesium (Mg) is a promising biodegradable scaffold for treating critical-size bone defects, and as an essential element for human metabolism, Mg has shown sufficient biocompatibility. Its elastic moduli and yield strengths are closer to those of cortical bone than common, inert metallic implants, effectively reducing stress concentrations around host tissue as well as stress shielding. More importantly, Mg can degrade and be absorbed in the human body in a safe and controlled manner, thereby reducing the need for second surgeries to remove implants. The development of porous Mg scaffolds via conventional selective laser melting (SLM) techniques has been limited due to Mg’s low boiling point, high vapor pressures, high reactivity, and non-ideal microstructures in additively manufactured parts. Here we present an exciting alternative to conventional additive techniques: 3D weaving with Mg wires that have controlled chemistries and microstructures. The weaving process offers high throughput manufacturing as well as porous architectures that can be optimized for stiffness and porosity with topology optimization. Once woven, we dip-coat the weaves with polylactic acid (PLA) to enhance their strength and corrosion resistance. Following fabrication, we characterize their mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and cell compatibility in vitro, and we use an intramuscular implantation model to evaluate their in vivo corrosion behavior and tissue response.

Abstract
The layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique has shown excellent potential in tissue engineering applications. The technique is mainly based on electrostatic attraction and involves the sequential adsorption of oppositely charged electrolyte complexes onto a substrate, resulting in uniform single layers that can be rapidly deposited to form nanolayer films. LbL has attracted significant attention as a coating technique due to it being a convenient and affordable fabrication method capable of achieving a wide range of biomaterial coatings while keeping the main biofunctionality of the substrate materials. One promising application is the use of nanolayer films fabricated by LbL assembly in the development of 3-dimensional (3D) bone scaffolds for bone repair and regeneration. Due to their versatility, nanoscale films offer an exciting opportunity for tailoring surface and bulk property modification of implants for osseous defect therapies. This review article discusses the state of the art of the LbL assembly technique, and the properties and functions of LbL-assembled films for engineered bone scaffold application, combination of multilayers for multifunctional coatings and recent advancements in the application of LbL assembly in bone tissue engineering. The recent decade has seen tremendous advances in the promising developments of LbL film systems and their impact on cell interaction and tissue repair. A deep understanding of the cell behaviour and biomaterial interaction for the further development of new generations of LbL films for tissue engineering are the most important targets for biomaterial research in the field. While there is still much to learn about the biological and physicochemical interactions at the interface of nano-surface coated scaffolds and biological systems, we provide a conceptual review to further progress in the LbL approach to 3D bone scaffold materials and inform the future of LbL development in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) alloy is one of the most widely used orthopedic implant materials due to its mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility nature. Porous Ti64 structures are gaining more research interest as bone implants as they can help in reducing the stress-shielding effect when compared to their solid counterpart. The literature shows that porous Ti64 implants fabricated using different additive manufacturing (AM) process routes, such as laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and electron beam melting (EBM) can be tailored to mimic the mechanical properties of natural bone. This review paper categorizes porous implant designs into non-gradient (uniform) and gradient (non-uniform) porous structures. Gradient porous design appears to be more promising for orthopedic applications due to its closeness towards natural bone morphology and improved mechanical properties. In addition, this paper outlines the details on bone structure and its properties, mechanical properties, fatigue behavior, multifunctional porous implant designs, current challenges, and literature gaps in the research studies on porous Ti64 bone implants.

Abstract
In this study, a porous titanium zirconium (TiZr)-based bulk metallic foam was successfully fabricated using the Cu spacer by employing the hot press method. TiZr-based bulk metallic foams with porosities ranging from 0% to 50% were fabricated and analyzed. The results indicate that thermal conductivity increased with the addition of Cu spacer; the increased thermal conductivity reduced the holding time in the hot press method. Moreover, the compressive strength decreased from 1261 to 76 MPa when the porosity of the TiZr-based bulk metallic foam increased to 50%, and the compressive strength was predictable. In addition, the foam demonstrated favorable biocompatibility in cell viability, cell migration capacity, and calcium deposition tests. Moreover, the pore size of the porous TiZr-based bulk metallic foam was around 120 µm. In conclusion, TiZr-based bulk metallic foam has favorable biocompatibility, mechanical property controllability, and porous structure for bone ingrowth and subsequent enhanced osteointegration. This porous TiZr-based bulk metallic foam has great potential as an orthopedic implant to enhance bone healing and decrease healing time.

Abstract
Objectives Current surgical fracture treatment paradigms, which use rigid metallic constructs to heal bones, provide reasonable clinical outcomes; however, they do not leverage recent advances in our understanding of bone healing and mechanotransduction throughout bone healing. The objective of this review was to investigate the efficacy and potential clinical applicability of surgical techniques and implants that deliberately introduce interfragmentary motion throughout the healing process. Methods The authors searched PubMed and Google Scholar databases for articles reporting on fracture repair using dynamic locking plates, dynamized surgical techniques, and reverse dynamization. Data collection also included assessment of additively manufactured (AM) implants that provide dynamic mechanical behaviors. Results Forty articles were included for final review. It was found that accelerated rates of fracture healing can be achieved with staged 2-part surgeries or dynamic implant designs. Temporal dynamization, where static fixation of bones is followed by the introduction of micromotion and controlled loading, has been shown to improve callus volume and accelerate the healing response. Reverse dynamization, where micromotion is encouraged during early callus formation and arrested later, may represent a significant advance for the treatment of critical defect injuries. Advances in AM techniques will likely provide the ability to create high-resolution implants capable of dynamized and reverse dynamized modalities. Conclusions There is no one-size-fits-all approach to optimization of fracture healing. However, it has been clearly demonstrated that fracture treatment can be enhanced by systematically altering the construct stiffness throughout the different phases of healing, which may be achieved with AM implant designs.

Abstract
Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) of magnesium (Mg) alloy porous scaffolds is expected to solve the dual challenges from customized structures and biodegradable functions required for repairing bone defects. However, one of the key technical difficulties lies in the poor L-PBF process performance of Mg, contributed by the high susceptibility to oxidation, vaporization, thermal expansion, and powder attachment etc. This work investigated the influence of L-PBF energy input and scanning strategy on the formation quality of porous scaffolds by using WE43 powder, and characterized the microstructure, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, biodegradation and osteogenic effect of the as-built WE43 porous scaffolds. With the customized energy input and scanning strategy, the relative density of struts reached over 99.5%, and the geometrical error between the designed and the fabricated porosity declined to below 10%. Massive secondary phases including intermetallic precipitates and oxides were observed. The compressive strength (4.37–23.49 MPa) and elastic modulus (154.40–873.02 MPa) were comparable to those of cancellous bone. Good biocompatibility was observed by in vitro cell viability and in vivo implantation. The biodegradation of as-built porous scaffolds promoted the osteogenic effect, but the structural integrity devastated after 12 h by the immersion tests in Hank's solution and after 4 weeks by the implantation in rabbits' femur, indicating an excessively rapid degradation rate. In vitro and in vivo investigations were performed on WE43 porous scaffolds. Reliable fusion quality and dimensional accuracy were achieved. The compressive strength and Young modulus ranged 4.37–23.49 and 154.40–873.02 MPa. Good biocompatibility and improved osteogenic effect were observed. The massive secondary phases as well as the enlarged specific surface resulted to a rapid degradation rate.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, biodegradable metals (BMs) have emerged as promising materials to fabricate temporary biomedical devices, with the purpose of avoiding potential side effects of permanent implants. In this review, we first surveyed the current status of BMs in neuroscience, and briefly summarized the representative stents for treating vascular stenosis. Then, inspired by the convincing clinical evidence on the in vivo safety of Mg alloys as cardiovascular stents, we analyzed the possibility of producing biodegradable cerebrovascular Mg alloy stents for treating ischemic stroke. For these novel applications, some key factors should also be considered in designing BM brain stents, including the anatomic features of the cerebral vasculature, hemodynamic influences, neuro-cytocompatibility and selection of alloying elements. This work may provide insights into the future design and fabrication of BM neurological devices, especially for brain stents. The current status of the application of biodegradable metals (BM) in neuroscience was presented. We analyzed the possibility of producing biodegradable cerebrovascular Mg alloy stents for ischemic stroke treatment. Key factors in designing BM brain stents were discussed. This work may provide insights into the future design and fabrication of BM neurological devices, especially for brain stents.

Abstract
Despite significant achievements in the understanding and treatment of cancer, it remains a major burden. Traditional therapeutic approaches based on the 'one-size-fits-all' paradigm are becoming obsolete, as demonstrated by the increasing number of patients failing to respond to treatments. In contrast, more precise approaches based on individualized genetic profiling of tumors have already demonstrated their potential. However, even more personalized treatments display shortcomings mainly associated with systemic delivery, such as low local drug efficacy or specificity. A large amount of effort is currently being invested in developing precision medicine-based strategies for improving the efficiency of cancer theranostics and modelling, which are envisioned to be more accurate, standardized, localized, and less expensive. To this end, interdisciplinary research fields, such as biomedicine, material sciences, pharmacology, chemistry, tissue engineering, and nanotechnology, must converge for boosting the precision cancer ecosystem. In this regard, precision biomaterials have emerged as a promising strategy to detect, model, and treat cancer more efficiently. These are defined as those biomaterials precisely engineered with specific theranostic functions and bioactive components, with the possibility to be tailored to the cancer patient needs, thus having a vast potential in the increasing demand for more efficient treatments. In this review, we discuss the latest advances in the field of precision biomaterials in cancer research, which are expected to revolutionize disease management, focusing on their uses for cancer modelling, detection, and therapeutic applications. We finally comment on the needed requirements to accelerate their application in the clinic to improve cancer patient prognosis.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) has enabled the fabrication of biodegradable porous metals to satisfy the desired characteristics for orthopedic applications. The geometrical design on AM biodegradable metallic scaffolds has been found to offer a favorable opportunity to regulate their mechanical and degradation performance in previous studies, however mostly confined to static responses. In this study, we presented the effect of the geometrical design on the dynamic responses of AM Mg scaffolds for the first time. Three different types of porous structures, based on various unit cells (i.e., biomimetic, diamond, and sheet-based gyroid), were established and then subjected to selective laser melting (SLM) process using group-developed Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr alloy (JDBM) powders. The topology after dynamic electropolishing, dynamic compressive properties, and dynamic biodegradation behavior of the AM Mg scaffolds were comprehensively evaluated. It was found that dynamic electropolishing effectively removed the excessive adhered powders on the surfaces and resulted in similar geometrical deviations amongst the AM Mg scaffolds, independent of their porous structures. The geometrical design significantly affected the compressive fatigue properties of the AM Mg scaffolds, of which the sheeted-based gyroid structure demonstrated a superior fatigue endurance limit of 0.85 at 106 cycles. Furthermore, in vitro dynamic immersion behaviors of the AM Mg scaffolds revealed a decent dependence on local architectures, where the sheeted-based gyroid scaffold experienced the lowest structural loss with a relatively uniform degradation mode. The obtained results indicate that the geometrical design could provide a promising strategy to develop desirable bone substitutes for the treatment of critical-size load-bearing defects. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Additive manufacturing (AM) has provided unprecedented opportunities to fabricate geometrically complex biodegradable scaffolds where the topological design becomes a key determinant on comprehensive performance. In this paper, we fabricate 3 AM biodegradable Mg scaffolds (i.e., biomimetic, diamond, and sheet-based gyroid) and report the effect of the geometrical design on the dynamic responses of AM Mg scaffolds for the first time. The results revealed that the sheeted-based gyroid scaffold exhibited the best combination of superior compressive fatigue properties and relatively uniform dynamic biodegradation mode, suggesting that the regulation of the porous structures could be an effective approach for the optimization of AM Mg scaffolds as to satisfy clinical requirements in orthopedic applications.

Abstract
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing of pure tantalum and their graded lattice structures was systematically investigated, with emphasis on their microstructure evolution, phase formation, surface energy and biological properties in comparison with conventionally forged pure Ta. The LPBF fabricated Ta (LPBF-Ta) exhibited lower contact angles and higher surface energy than the forged-Ta which indicated the better wettability of the LPBF-Ta. The adhesion and proliferation of rat bone marrow stromal cells (rBMSCs) were also enhanced for the LPBF-Ta when compared to forged-Ta. Three different Ta graded gyroid lattice structures (i.e., uniform structure, Y-gradient structure, Z-gradient structure) were designed and fabricated using the same optimised LPBF parameters. Y-gradient structures exhibited the best plateau stress and compressive modulus among three different graded structures due to the maximum local volume fraction on the fracture plane. In fatigue response, Y-gradient outperformed the other two gyroid structures under varying stresses. In terms of cell culture response, the uniform structures performed the best biocompatibility due to its suitable pore size for cell adhesion and growth. This study provides new and in-depth insights into the LPBF additive manufacturing of pure Ta graded lattice structures with desired fatigue and biological properties for load-bearing orthopaedic applications.

Abstract
Additively manufactured biodegradable porous iron has been only very recently demonstrated. Two major limitations of such a biomaterial are very low biodegradability and incompatibility with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here, we present a novel biomaterial that resolves both of those limitations. We used extrusion-based 3D printing to fabricate ex situ-alloyed biodegradable iron-manganese scaffolds that are non-ferromagnetic and exhibit enhanced rates of biodegradation. We developed ink formulations containing iron and 25, 30, or 35 wt% manganese powders, and debinding and sintering process to achieve Fe-Mn scaffolds with 69% porosity. The Fe25Mn scaffolds had the ε-martensite and γ-austenite phases, while the Fe30Mn and Fe35Mn scaffolds had only the γ-austenite phase. All iron-manganese alloys exhibited weakly paramagnetic behavior, confirming their potential to be used as MRI-friendly bone substitutes. The in vitro biodegradation rates of the scaffolds were very much enhanced (i.e., 4.0 to 4.6 times higher than that of porous iron), with the Fe35Mn alloy exhibiting the highest rate of biodegradation (i.e., 0.23 mm/y). While the elastic moduli and yield strengths of the scaffolds decreased over 28 days of in vitro biodegradation, those values remained in the range of cancellous bone. The culture of preosteoblasts on the porous iron-manganese scaffolds revealed that cells could develop filopodia on the scaffolds, but their viability was reduced by the effect of biodegradation. Altogether, this research marks a major breakthrough and demonstrates the great prospects of multi-material extrusion-based 3D printing to further address the remaining issues of porous iron-based materials and, eventually, develop ideal bone substitutes. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: 3D printed porous iron biomaterials for bone substitution still encounter limitations, such as the slow biodegradation and magnetic resonance imaging incompatibility. Aiming to solve the two fundamental issues of iron, we present ex-situ alloyed porous iron-manganese scaffolds fabricated by means of multi-material extrusion-based 3D printing. Our porous iron-manganese possessed enhanced biodegradability, non-ferromagnetic property, and bone-mimicking mechanical property throughout the in vitro biodegradation period. The results demonstrated a great prospect of multi-material extrusion-based 3D printing to further address the remaining challenges of porous iron-based biomaterials to be an ideal biodegradable bone substitutes.

Abstract
For orthopaedic applications, additive manufactured (AM) porous scaffolds made of absorbable metals such as magnesium, zinc or iron are of particular interest. They do not only offer the potential to design and fabricate bio-mimetic or rather bone-equivalent mechanical properties, they also do not need to be removed in further surgery. Located in a physiological environment, scaffolds made of absorbable metals show a decreasing Young’s modulus over time, due to product dissolution. For magnesium-based scaffolds during the first days an increase of the smeared Young’s modulus can be observed, which is mainly attributed to a forming substrate layer of degradation products on the strut surfaces. In this study, the influence of degradation products on the stiffness properties of metallic scaffolds is investigated. For this, analytical calculations and finite-element simulations are performed to study the influence of the substrate layer thickness and Young’s modulus for single struts and for a new scaffold geometry with adapted polar cubic face-centered unit cells with vertical struts (f2cc,z). The finite-element model is further validated by compression tests on AM scaffolds made from Zn1Mg (1 wt% Mg). The results show that even low thicknesses and Young’s moduli of the substrate layer significantly increases the smeared Young’s modulus under axial compression.

Abstract
Advanced pore morphology (APM) foam elements are almost spherical foam elements with a solid outer shell and a porous internal structure mainly used in applications with compressive loading. To determine how the deformation of the internal structure and its changes during compression are related to its mechanical response, in-situ time-resolved X-ray computed microtomography experiments were performed, where the APM foam elements were 3D scanned during a loading procedure. Simultaneously applying mechanical loading and radiographical imaging enabled new insights into the deformation behaviour of the APM foam samples when the mechanical response was correlated with the internal deformation of the samples. It was found that the highest stiffness of the APM elements is reached before the appearance of the first shear band. After this point, the stiffness of the APM element reduces up to the point of the first self-contact between the internal pore walls, increasing the sample stiffness towards the densification region.

Abstract
The key feature of Fe-Mn alloys is gradual degradability and non-magneticity, with laser power bed fusion (LPBF) parameters influencing the microstructure and chemical composition. Our study focuses on biodegradable Fe-Mn alloys produced by mechanically mixing pure metal feedstock powders as part of the LPBF process. The Mn content and, consequently, the γ-ε phase formation in LPBF samples are directly correlated with an adapted energy-density (E) equation by combining the five primary LPBF parameters. We varied laser power (P) in a range of 200-350 W and scanning speed at 400 and 800 mm/s, and a comprehensive study was performed on samples with similar E. The study also showed an almost linear correlation between the LPBF's laser power and the material's hardness and porosity. The corrosion resistance was significantly reduced (from 13 to 400 μm/year) for the LPBF samples compared to a conventionally produced sample due to the dual-phase microstructure, increased porosity and other defects. The static immersion test showed that the process parameters greatly influence the quantity of oxides and the distribution of their diameters in the LPBF samples and, therefore, their corrosion stability. The most challenging part of the study was reducing the amount of ε phase relative to γ phase to increase the non-magnetic properties of the LPBF samples.

Abstract
Iron (Fe) and Fe-based materials have been vigorously explored in orthopedic applications in the past decade mainly owing to their promising mechanical properties including high yield strength, elastic modulus and ductility. Nevertheless, their corrosion products and low corrosion kinetics are the major concerns that need to be improved further despite their appealing mechanical strengths. The current studies on porous Fe-based scaffolds show an improved corrosion rate but the in vitro biocompatibility is still problematic in general. Unlike the Mg implants, the biodegradation and bioabsorption of Fe-based implants are still not well described. This vague issue could implicate the development of Fe-based materials as potential medical implants as they have not reached the clinical trial stage yet. Thus, there is a need to understand in-depth the Fe corrosion behavior and its bioabsorption mechanism to facilitate the material design of Fe-based scaffolds and further improve its biocompatibility. This manuscript provides an important insight into the basic bioabsorption of the multi-ranged Fe-based corrosion products with a review of the latest progress on the corrosion & in vitro biocompatibility of porous Fe-based scaffolds together with the remaining challenges and the perspective on the future direction.

Abstract
Powder metallurgy is one of the most prevalent ways for metallic degradable materials preparation. Knowledge of the properties of initial powders used during this procedure is therefore of great importance. Two different metals, iron and zinc, were selected and studied in this paper due to their promising properties in the field of biodegradable implants. Raw powders were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX). Powders (Fe, Zn and Fe-Zn in a weight ratio of 1:1) were then compressed at the pressure of 545 MPa to the form of pellets with a diameter of 1.7 cm. Surface morphology and degradation behavior in the Hanks´ solution were studied and evaluated. Electrochemical polarization tests along with the static immersion tests carried out for 21 days were employed for corrosion behavior characterization. The highest corrosion rate was observed for pure Zn powder followed by the Fe-Zn and Fe, respectively. A mixed Fe-Zn sample showed similar properties as pure zinc with no signs of iron degradation after 21 days due to the effect of galvanic protection secured by the zinc acting as a sacrificial anode.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mesoporous hydroxylapatite (MHAP) might be important for bone regeneration, and ursolic acid (UA) has anti-inflammatory effects. Accordingly, we developed, for the first time, ursolic acid-loaded MHAP-chitosan (MHAP-CS-UA) scaffolds to treat bone defects. METHODS In vitro, we synthesize biomaterial scaffolds. By SEM, XRD, EDS and FTIR, we test the performance of the hybrid scaffolds. By drug release, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, alizarin red staining, and Western blotting, we test the anti-inflammatory and osteo-inductive properties of scaffolds. In vivo, we verify osseointegration ability and bone regeneration. RESULTS The MHAP is a rod-shaped structure with a length of 100~300nm and a diameter of 40~60nm. The critical structure gives the micro-scaffold a property of control release due to the pore sizes of 1.6~4.3 nm in hydroxyapatite and the hydrogen bonding between the scaffolds and UA drugs. The released UA drugs could notably inhibit the polarization of macrophages to pro-inflammatory macrophages (M1 type) and promote the expression of osteogenic-related genes (COL1, ALP and OPG) and osteogenic-related proteins (BMP-2, RUNX2 and COL1). CONCLUSION The MHAP-CS-UA scaffolds have good anti-inflammatory, osseointegration, osteo-inductivity and bone regeneration. And they will be the novel and promising candidates to cure the bone disease.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the effect of the particle size range, the freeze casting temperature and sintering temperature on the capillarity performance and mechanical properties of Ni wicks manufactured by freeze-casting. The use of Ni/camphene-polystyrene suspensions creates wicks with an open porosity above 80% and average pore sizes of 38 μm to 17 μm by tailoring the particle size ranges and freezing temperatures employed. The incorporation of PS and the use of a continuous freeze-casting process reduces the particle sedimentation and generates a highly interconnected pore structure with regular pore sizes across the sample. The capillarity performances exhibit a fast and complete water adsorption, especially in Ni wicks freeze-casted at 10 °C and sintered at 800 °C, but only when the smaller particle size range is used do Ni wicks achieve sufficient mechanical strength.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing's attributes include print customization, low per-unit cost for small- to mid-batch production, seamless interfacing with mainstream medical 3D imaging techniques, and feasibility to create free-form objects in materials that are biocompatible and biodegradable. Consequently, additive manufacturing is apposite for a wide range of biomedical applications including custom biocompatible implants that mimic the mechanical response of bone, biodegradable scaffolds with engineered degradation rate, medical surgical tools, and biomedical instrumentation. This review surveys the materials, 3D printing methods and technologies, and biomedical applications of metal 3D printing, providing a historical perspective while focusing on the state of the art. It then identifies a number of exciting directions of future growth: (a) the improvement of mainstream additive manufacturing methods and associated feedstock; (b) the exploration of mature, less utilized metal 3D printing techniques; (c) the optimization of additively manufactured load-bearing structures via artificial intelligence; and (d) the creation of monolithic, multimaterial, finely featured, multifunctional implants.

Abstract
Bone regenerative engineering provides a great platform for bone tissue regeneration covering cells, growth factors and other dynamic forces for fabricating scaffolds. Diversified biomaterials and their fabrication methods have emerged for fabricating patient specific bioactive scaffolds with controlled microstructures for bridging complex bone defects. The goal of this review is to summarize the points of scaffold design as well as applications for bone regeneration based on both electrospinning and 3D bioprinting. It first briefly introduces biological characteristics of bone regeneration and summarizes the applications of different types of material and the considerations for bone regeneration including polymers, ceramics, metals and composites. We then discuss electrospinning nanofibrous scaffold applied for the bone regenerative engineering with various properties, components and structures. Meanwhile, diverse design in the 3D bioprinting scaffolds for osteogenesis especially in the role of drug and bioactive factors delivery are assembled. Finally, we discuss challenges and future prospects in the development of electrospinning and 3D bioprinting for osteogenesis and prominent strategies and directions in future.

Abstract
Iron, while attracting less attention than magnesium and zinc, is still one of the best candidates for biodegradable metal stents thanks its biocompatibility, great elastic moduli and high strength. Due to the low corrosion rate, and thus slow biodegradation, iron stents have still not been put into use. While these problems have still not been fully resolved, many studies have been published that propose different approaches to the issues. This brief overview report summarises the latest developments in the field of biodegradable iron-based stents and presents some techniques that can accelerate their biocorrosion rate. Basic data related to iron metabolism and its biocompatibility, the mechanism of the corrosion process, as well as a critical look at the rate of degradation of iron-based systems obtained by several different methods are included. All this illustrates as the title says, what was done within the topic of biodegradable iron-based materials and what more can be done.

Abstract
Micro arc oxidation (MAO) is a prominent surface treatment to form bioceramic coating layers with beneficial physical, chemical, and biological properties on the metal substrates for biomaterial applications. In this study, MAO treatment has been performed to modify the surface characteristics of AZ31 Mg alloy to enhance the biocompatibility and corrosion resistance for implant applications by using an electrolytic mixture of Ca3(PO4)2 and C10H16N2O8 (EDTA) in the solutions. For this purpose, the calcium phosphate (Ca-P) containing thin film was successfully fabricated on the surface of the implant material. After in-vivo implantation into the rabbit bone for four weeks, the apparent growth of soft tissues and bone healing effects have been documented. The morphology, microstructure, chemical composition, and phase structures of the coating were identified by SEM, XPS, and XRD. The corrosion resistance of the coating was analyzed by polarization and salt spray test. The coatings consist of Ca-P compounds continuously have proliferation activity and show better corrosion resistance and lower roughness in comparison to mere MAO coated AZ31. The corrosion current density decreased to approximately 2.81 × 10-7 A/cm2 and roughness was reduced to 0.622 μm. Thus, based on the results, it was anticipated that the development of degradable materials and implants would be feasible using this method. This study aims to fabricate MAO coatings for orthopedic magnesium implants that can enhance bioactivity, biocompatibility, and prevent additional surgery and implant-related infections to be used in clinical applications.

Abstract
Design an implant similar to the human bone is one of the critical problems in bone tissue engineering. Metal porous scaffolds have good prospects in bone tissue replacement due to their matching elastic modulus, better strength, and biocompatibility. However, traditional processing methods are challenging to fabricate scaffolds with a porous structure, limiting the development of porous scaffolds. With the advancement of additive manufacturing (AM) and computer-aided technologies, the development of porous metal scaffolds also ushers in unprecedented opportunities. In recent years, many new metal materials and innovative design methods are used to fabricate porous scaffolds with excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. This article reviews the research progress of porous metal scaffolds, and introduces the AM technologies used in porous metal scaffolds. Then the applications of different metal materials in bone scaffolds are summarized, and the advantages and limitations of various scaffold design methods are discussed. Finally, we look forward to the development prospects of AM in porous metal scaffolds.

Abstract
Recent advances in the field of metallic additive manufacturing have expanded production capabilities for bone implants to include porous lattice structures. While traditional models of de novo bone formation can be applied to fully dense implant materials, their applicability to the interior of porous materials has not been well-characterized. Unlike other reviews that focus on materials and mechanical properties of lattice structures, this review compiles biological performance from in vivo studies in pre-clinical models only. First, we introduce the most common lattice geometry designs employed in vivo and discuss some of their fabrication advantages and limitations. Then lattice geometry is correlated to quantitative (histomorphometric) and qualitative (histological) assessments of osseointegration. We group studies according to two common implant variables: pore size and percent porosity, and explore the extent of osseointegration using common measures, including bone-implant contact (BIC), bone area (BA), bone volume/total volume (BV/TV) and biomechanical stability, for various animal models and implantation times. Based on this, trends related to in vivo bone formation on the interior of lattice structures are presented. Common challenges with lattice structures are highlighted, including nonuniformity of bone growth through the entirety of the lattice structure due to occlusion effects and avascularity. This review paper identifies a lack of systematic in vivo studies on porous AM implants to target optimum geometric design, including pore shape, size, and percent porosity in controlled animal models and critical-sized defects. Further work focusing on surface modification strategies and systematic geometric studies to homogenize in vivo bone growth through the scaffold interior are recommended to increase implant stability in the early stages of osseointegration.

Abstract
One of the biggest challenges in tissue engineering is the manufacturing of porous structures that are customized in size and shape and that mimic natural bone structure. Additive manufacturing is known as a sufficient method to produce 3D porous structures used as bone substitutes in large segmental bone defects. The literature indicates that the mechanical and biological properties of scaffolds highly depend on geometrical features of structure (pore size, pore shape, porosity), surface morphology, and chemistry. The objective of this review is to present the latest advances and trends in the development of titanium scaffolds concerning the relationships between applied materials, manufacturing methods, and interior architecture determined by porosity, pore shape, and size, and the mechanical, biological, chemical, and physical properties. Such a review is assumed to show the real achievements and, on the other side, shortages in so far research.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) porous zinc (Zn) with a moderate degradation rate is a promising candidate for biodegradable bone scaffolds. However, fabrication of such scaffolds with adequate mechanical properties remains a challenge. Moreover, the composition, crystallography and microstructure of the in vivo degradation products formed at or near the implant-bone interface are still not precisely known. Here, we have fabricated porous Fe@Zn scaffolds with skeletons consisting of an inner core layer of Fe and an outer shell layer of Zn using template-assisted electrodeposition technique, and systematically evaluated their porous structure, mechanical properties, degradation mechanism, antibacterial ability and in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. In situ site-specific focused ion beam micromilling and transmission electron microscopy were used to identify the in vivo degradation products at the nanometer scale. The 3D porous Fe@Zn scaffolds show similar structure and comparable mechanical properties to human cancellous bone. The degradation rates can be adjusted by varying the layer thickness of Zn and Fe. The antibacterial rates reach over 95% against S. aureus and almost 100% against E. coli. A threshold of released Zn ion concentration (~ 0.3 mM) was found to determine the in vitro biocompatibility. Intense new bone formation and ingrowth were observed despite with a slight inflammatory response. The in vivo degradation products were identified to be equiaxed nanocrystalline zinc oxide with dispersed zinc carbonate. This study not only demonstrates the feasibility of porous Fe@Zn for biodegradable bone implants, but also provides significant insight into the degradation mechanism of porous Zn in physiological environment.

Abstract
To improve mechanical properties of keratin (KR) porous scaffolds, we prepared a PEGylated keratin through thiol-ene click reaction. Several porous scaffolds were prepared by blending PEGylated keratin with sodium alginate (SA). The surface morphology, mechanical properties, and porosity of scaffolds were detailed studied at different KR/SA proportions. The results showed the content of SA had an effect on pore formation and mechanical properties. When the mass ratio of KR to SA was 2:1, the stress of yield point of the keratin porous scaffold reached 1.24 MPa, and also showed good deformation recovery ability. The PEGylated keratin porous scaffold had a high porosity and great cytocompatibility. Its' porosity is up to 81.7% and the cell viability is about 117.78%. This allows it to absorb the simulated plasma quickly (9.20 ± 0.37 g/g). In addition, the structural stability and acid-base stability of the keratin porous scaffold were also improved after PEGylation. Overall, the PEGylated keratin porous scaffold will be promising in tissue materials due to its great physical, chemical, and biological properties.
