Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke survivors demonstrate decreased physical activity (PA) and take time to return to participation in everyday life, but the relationship between the two variables is unknown. OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation and trajectory over time between levels of PA and participation in everyday life in stroke survivors. METHODS PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Rehabilitation&Sport Medicine Source, and PEDro databases were searched from inception to January 2024. Cross-sectional and prospective studies evaluating both levels of PA and participation in stroke survivors were included. Two reviewers independently conducted the study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. Meta-analyses of pooled correlation coefficients were calculated when at least two studies reported a correlation coefficient between the same PA and participation outcomes. RESULTS Of 4962 studies identified, 49 were included in the systematic review. Studies were rated high (55%%) or fair (45%) quality. A wide range of monitoring methodologies for assessing PA and participation were found in the 23 prospective studies. Seven studies were included in the meta-analyses, showing a positive moderate correlation between PA time and participation in activities of daily living (n = 148; r = 0.52; P < 0.01; I2 = 81%) in participants <6 months post-stroke, and between PA time and the participation in all areas (n = 126; r = 0.44; P < 0.01; I2 = 0%) in participants ≥6 months post-stroke. Overall, while PA showed significant improvements over time, participation only showed a tendency. CONCLUSION Despite the heterogeneity, consistent positive associations were found between PA time and participation levels in some areas. Establishing consensus is crucial to reduce heterogeneity and facilitate data pooling.

Abstract
To gain insights into the impact of upper limb (UL) dysfunctions after breast cancer treatment, this study aimed to develop a temporal convolutional neural network (TCN) to detect functional daily UL use in breast cancer survivors using data from a wrist-worn accelerometer. A pre-existing dataset of 10 breast cancer survivors was used that contained raw 3-axis acceleration data and simultaneously recorded video data, captured during four daily life activities. The input of our TCN consists of a 3-axis acceleration sequence with a receptive field of 243 samples. The 4 ResNet TCN blocks perform dilated temporal convolutions with a kernel of size 3 and a dilation rate that increases by a factor of 3 after each iteration. Outcomes of interest were functional UL use (minutes) and percentage UL use. We found strong agreement between the video and predicted data for functional UL use (ICC = 0.975) and moderately strong agreement for %UL use (ICC = 0.794). The TCN model overestimated the functional UL use by 0.71 min and 3.06%. Model performance showed good accuracy, f1, and AUPRC scores (0.875, 0.909, 0.954, respectively). In conclusion, using wrist-worn accelerometer data, the TCN model effectively identified functional UL use in daily life among breast cancer survivors.

Abstract
Stroke survivors face participation restrictions, yet little is known regarding how social support affects the association between an individual's abilities and participation. Through a Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model lens, social support was examined as a potential mediator between ability and participation in cognitively and mobility-demanding activities for stroke survivors with aphasia (persons with aphasia [PWA]) and without aphasia (persons without aphasia [PWOA]). A cross-sectional design, including PWA (n = 50) and PWOA (n = 59) examined associations among person factors (physical impairment, cognition), an environmental factor (social support), and occupational participation through cognitively- and mobility-demanding activity subscales of the Activity Card Sort. Cognition was associated with participation in cognitively demanding activities for both groups, though social support was a mediator only for PWA. Physical impairment was associated with participation in mobility-demanding activities for PWOA, though social support did not mediate that relationship. Social support is key to PWA participating in cognitively demanding activities post-stroke.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Active patient participation is an important factor in optimizing post-stroke recovery, yet it is often low, regardless of stroke severity. The reasons behind this trend are unclear. PURPOSE To explore how people who have suffered a stroke, perceive the transition from independence to dependence and whether their role in post-stroke rehabilitation influences active participation. METHODS In-depth interviews with 17 people who have had a stroke. Data were analyzed using systematic text condensation informed by the concept of autonomy from enactive theory. RESULTS Two categories emerged. The first captures how the stroke and the resultant hospital admission produces a shift from being an autonomous subject to "an object on an assembly line." Protocol-based investigations, inactivity, and a lack of patient involvement predominantly determine the hospital context. The second category illuminates how people who have survived a stroke passively adapt to the hospital system, a behavior that stands in contrast to the participatory enablement facilitated by community. Patients feel more prepared for the transition home after in-patient rehabilitation rather than following direct discharge from hospital. CONCLUSION Bodily changes, the traditional patient role, and the hospital context collectively exacerbate a reduction of individual autonomy. Thus, an interactive partnership between people who survived a stroke and multidisciplinary professionals may strengthen autonomy and promote participation after a stroke.

Abstract
Environments have a modifying effect on the participation of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in all areas of life. This cross-sectional study investigated parental perspectives on supportive or hindering environments and the daily contextual strategies parents used to enhance their children's participation. Qualitative and quantitative data gathered from 115 parents from German-speaking Switzerland using the participation and environment measure-child and youth (PEM-CY) were analyzed. Results revealed 45 environmental supports and barriers at home, at school, and in the community. Contextual strategies were identified in combination with people, activities, time, objects, and places. Parental perspectives on participation and their contextual strategies should be considered in environmental-based interventions to support the participation of children and adolescents with ASD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine the face, convergent validity, internal consistency, and stability reliability of the impact on participation and autonomy-Persian version (IPA-p) scale for using among Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Trained experts interviewed 227 type 2 diabetes patients who were registered in out-patient Diabetes Clinic of Ali-Ibn Abi-Talib Hospital, (Rafsanjan, Southeast Iran from May 2018 to February 2019) and their relatives to assess the face and convergent validity, internal consistency, and stability reliability of the IPA-p scale. A checklist was used to collect demographic information and also to record expert's̛̛̛̛̛̛ points of view about the scale to assess face validity. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha, and stability was assessed using interclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Test-retest method was used to detect the reliability of the questionnaire. Respondents completed the IPA-p scale on the two occasions with an interval of 30-45 days. RESULTS In relation to convergent validity, the confirmatory model showed an acceptable fit and the scale had a highly convergent validity. Exploratory factor analysis showed that the IPA-p scale has a ten-factor structure that explained 77.42% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha between the mean IPA-p scores achieved on the two occasions ranged from 0.65 to 0.92. Test-retest ICCs for the ten domains were between 0.64 and 0.81. CONCLUSIONS The IPA-p questionnaire can be a relatively valid and reliable instrument for assessing self-reported participation among Iranian type 2 diabetes patients. However, some improvement is needed to make it fully suitable for using among Persian-language diabetic patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To gain insight into the interaction between nurses and patients in early rehabilitation and the role of patient participation in this context. RESEARCH DESIGN AND SETTING A qualitative study with a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was conducted in two units/hospitals from January 2022 to January 2023, utilizing observations and video recordings of eight nurse/patient dyads combined with post observation interviews with the nurses. The study was analysed by systematic text condensation and video analysis, informed by interaction theory. FINDINGS Two contrasting categories emerged: 1) Absent invitations: the nurse performed procedures without involving the patient; in other situations, the nurse informed the patient without requesting participation. Simultaneously, spontaneous patient movements were not acknowledged by the nurse. The nurses explained that this practice occurred due to time pressure, oversights, a lack of belief regarding patients' capacities, the unit's culture and little training. 2) Invitations that strengthened participation: the nurse verbally requested activity that often resulted in an inadequate response, or bodily extended invitations that sometimes led to joint active movement. Patients were the most active participants when nurses combined verbal prompts, eye contact, physical handling, and dialogue. In the interviews, the nurses emphasized giving patients enough time to participate and repeatedly encouraged participation because the patient's condition and capacity constantly fluctuated. CONCLUSION Interactions that combine verbal and bodily invitations appear crucial for patient participation in early rehabilitation in the intensive care unit, emphasizing the importance of integrated tailored bodily communication. The nurses' lack of insight into and attention to the patient's bodily potential for active movement combined with a paternalistic approach to the patient's situation may hinder patients' active participation. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE Integrated forms of interaction that explore patients' capacity and potential for participation should be employed in line with verbal communication. Developing competence in early rehabilitation should be emphasized in critical care nurses' education and training.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Participating in family gatherings can provide enjoyment and quality time together as a family. However, being the primary carers, mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder may experience this phenomenon differently. The purpose of this study is to explore how available literature describes mothers' experiences of participation in family gatherings and social events with their children with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS A scoping review was used to explore available literature and identify studies describing mothers' experiences of family gatherings and social events with their children. A thematic synthesis was performed to analyse and synthesise the findings. RESULTS A total of 8 articles were included for review. The analysis of the included studies resulted in one central theme-Negative experiences despite strategies-and four analytical themes: Feeling fear, stress, and anxiety; Avoiding family gatherings; Enjoying less and becoming less confident; and Using strategies. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder experience difficulties during gatherings even when using strategies, hence limiting their participation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In accordance with Swedish national dementia guidelines, persons with dementia residing in nursing homes should have the possibility to participate in everyday occupations. Securing choices and desires for participating in occupations is challenging due to the nature of dementia and is not evident in empirical studies regarding nursing home residents. AIM to describe gaps in participation in everyday occupations among persons with dementia living in a nursing home, as reported by a proxy respondent. METHOD To record the congruence or discrepancy between doing and wanting to do, the Occupational Gaps Questionnaire was used. Results were analysed with descriptive statistics. RESULTS The respondents scored that over half of the persons with dementia had two or more occupational gaps and one-fourth wanted to participate in minor shopping. However, less than two percent were deemed to do this activity. CONCLUSIONS Persons with dementia living in nursing homes risk restrictions in participation. Securing valuable information regarding individuals' choices and desires, adhering to the persons' inherent rights to expression, can be the first step in promoting participation in everyday occupations. SIGNIFICANCE Occupational therapists with their unique theoretical knowledge can facilitate participation in occupations, supporting the citizenship of nursing home residents.

BACKGROUND Most stroke survivors face restrictions in functional disability and social participation, which can impede their recovery and community reintegration. Participation self-efficacy refers to survivors' confidence in using strategies to manage participation in areas including community living and work engagement. This study aimed to assess the association between participation self-efficacy and participation among stroke survivors. METHODS This study adopted a cross-sectional correlational design with a convenience sample of 336 stroke survivors recruited from five hospitals in China. Participation self-efficacy was measured using the Chinese version of the Participation Strategies Self-Efficacy Scale (PS-SES-C) and participation measured using the Chinese version of the Reintegration to Normal Living Index (RNLI-C). The association between participation self-efficacy and participation was examined using multiple regression analysis with adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS Participants had a mean age of 69.9 ± 11.5 years, with most (81.6%) having an ischaemic stroke, and more than half (61.6%) a first-ever stroke. After adjustment for potential confounders, every 10-point increase in the PS-SES-C total score was significantly associated with an average 1.3-point increase in the RNLI-C total score (B = 1.313, SE = 0.196, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that participation self-efficacy is significantly associated with participation among Chinese community-dwelling survivors of a mild or moderate stroke. This suggests that rehabilitation programmes for stroke survivors may be more effective if they incorporate participation-focused strategies designed to enhance self-efficacy. (229 words).

Abstract
Objective To examine individual- and environmental-level factors associated with perceived participation performance and satisfaction in people with chronic stroke. Design Cross-sectional study using secondary data analysis of baseline data from a randomized controlled trial. Setting Community-based setting. Participants Community-dwelling adults with mild to moderate stroke (N=113; mean age=57 years; 58 males). Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures Main outcomes were measured with the Reintegration to Normal Living Index (perceived participation performance) and Patient-Reported Outcome Measure Information System satisfaction with participation in social roles (perceived participation satisfaction). Other variables collected included personal (eg, age, perceived recovery), health-related (eg, time since stroke, number of comorbidities), body function-related (eg, Stroke Impact Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), and environmental (eg, World Health Organization Quality of Life Short Form Environmental subscale) data. Results Depression, fatigue, mobility, and environmental support showed moderate to strong, statistically significant associations with participation performance and satisfaction in people with stroke. Perceived recovery was moderately associated with participation performance but not with participation satisfaction. Conclusions Returning to participation is a complex process after stroke. Results suggest that various personal, body function-related, and environmental factors are associated with participation performance and satisfaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify critical illness survivors' perceived barriers and facilitators to resuming performance of meaningful activities when transitioning from hospital to home. DESIGN Secondary content analysis of semistructured interviews about patients' experiences of intensive care (primary analysis disseminated on the patient-facing website www.healthtalk.org). Two coders characterised patient-perceived barriers and facilitators to resuming meaningful activities. To facilitate clinical application, we mapped the codes onto the Person-Task-Environment model of performance, a patient-centred rehabilitation model that characterises complex interactions among the person, task and environment when performing activities. SETTING United Kingdom, 2005-2006. PARTICIPANTS 39 adult critical illness survivors, sampled for variation among demographics and illness experiences. RESULTS Person-related barriers included negative mood or affect, perceived setbacks; weakness or limited endurance; pain or discomfort; inadequate nutrition or hydration; poor concentration/confusion; disordered sleep/hallucinations/nightmares; mistrust of people or information; and altered appearance. Task-related barriers included miscommunication and managing conflicting priorities. Environment-related barriers included non-supportive health services and policies; challenging social attitudes; incompatible patient-family coping (emotional trauma and physical disability); equipment problems; overstimulation; understimulation; and environmental inaccessibility. Person-related facilitators included motivation or attitude; experiencing progress; and religion or spirituality. Task-related facilitators included communication. Environment-related facilitators included support from family, friends or healthcare providers; supportive health services and policies; equipment; community resources; medications; and accessible housing. Barriers decreased and facilitators increased over time. Six barrier-facilitator domains dominated based on frequency and emphasis across all performance goals: mood/motivation, setbacks/progress, fatiguability/strength; mis/communication; lack/community support; lack/health services and policies. CONCLUSIONS Critical illness survivors described a comprehensive inventory of 18 barriers and 11 facilitators that align with the Person-Task-Environment model of performance. Six dominant barrier-facilitator domains seem strong targets for impactful interventions. These results verify previous knowledge and offer novel opportunities for optimising patient-centred care and reducing disability after critical illness.

Abstract
Evidence to inform rehabilitation service delivery for individuals with deafblindness, especially in the Indian context, is inadequate. Rehabilitation professionals often find it challenging to design rehabilitation interventions that promote participation for those with deafblindness. Therefore, our purpose was to understand the contextual factors that influence the participation of individuals with deafblindness in India from the perspectives of those who are involved in providing rehabilitation services to them. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) as a framework, we conducted two focus group discussions with 16 rehabilitation service providers in India. We used a content analysis approach to examine the data. Rehabilitation service providers perceived participation barriers to be linked primarily to the social environment. Specifically, participants identified four major factors acting as barriers, including (a) lack of awareness about deafblindness; (b) negative attitudes and stigma associated with disability; (c) lack of access to resources such as assistive technology and interpreter support; and (d) communication challenges associated with severe impairments. Facilitators include accessibility of the built environment for multisensory impairments, affordable technology, provision of an interpreter and personal support worker, and training on deafblindness for professionals. The participation of individuals with deafblindness could be enhanced by identifying and removing environmental barriers and improving knowledge about deafblindness among rehabilitation professionals for proper identification, assessment, and access to rehabilitation services.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the participation patterns of Korean children with and without disabilities at home, and the environmental factors affecting their participation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Korean Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth were applied to 184 caregivers of children aged 5 to 13 years in South Korea. To explore home participation patterns and environmental factors at the item level, analysis of covariance, Pearson's chi-square tests, and radar plots were used. RESULTS The largest group differences in participation frequency were in "school preparation" and "homework" and those at involvement level were in "indoor play and games," "getting together with other people," "school preparation," and "homework." More caregivers of children with disabilities desired changes in their children's participation in all activities. They also perceived that "physical, cognitive, and social demands of typical home activities," "supplies," and "money" hindered children's home participation. CONCLUSIONS The findings provide information about how Korean children participated in home-based activities, whether their caregivers desired changes in their participation, and what environmental factors impede their home participation. These can help service providers understand the interaction between participation and environmental factors and offer insight into where their service goals should be focused for the successful participation of children with disabilities at home.Implications for RehabilitationAs children with disabilities spend much time at home, their parents need to consider both how many times their children participate and how much they get involved in home-based activities.Rehabilitation service providers need to focus on whether parents are satisfied with their children's participation in home activities to decide where much effort is needed for meaningfully occupying children's time at home.The goal of rehabilitation services can be to mitigate a poor fit between children's abilities and the demands of activities for successful participation in home activities.Measuring not only the quantity of participation but also the quality of participation is helpful for setting a collaborative goal with parents to improve the participation of children with disabilities at home.

Abstract
The ultimate goal of any upper-limb neurorehabilitation procedure is to improve upper-limb functioning in daily life. While clinic-based assessments provide an assessment of what a patient can do, they do not completely reflect what a patient does in his/her daily life. The use of compensatory strategies such as the use of the less affected upper-limb or excessive use of trunk in daily life is a common behavioral pattern seen in patients with hemiparesis. To this end, there has been an increasing interest in the use of wearable sensors to objectively assess upper-limb functioning. This paper presents a framework for assessing upper-limb functioning using sensors by providing: (a) a set of definitions of important constructs associated with upper-limb functioning; (b) different visualization methods for evaluating upper-limb functioning; and (c) two new measures for quantifying how much an upper-limb is used and the relative bias in their use. The demonstration of some of these components is presented using data collected from inertial measurement units from a previous study. The proposed framework can help guide the future technical and clinical work in this area to realize valid, objective, and robust tools for assessing upper-limb functioning. This will in turn drive the refinement and standardization of the assessment of upper-limb functioning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the structural validity of the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory - Participation subscale (M2PI) in a sample of Veterans and to assess whether the tool functioned similarly for male and female Veterans DESIGN: Rasch analysis of M2PI records from the National Veterans TBI Health Registry database from 2012-2018. SETTING National VA Polytrauma System of Care outpatient settings. PARTICIPANTS Veterans with a clinically confirmed history of TBI (N = 6,065; 94% male). INTERVENTIONS Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) M2PI, a five-point Likert-type scale with eight items. For this analysis, the two employment items were treated individually for a total of nine items. RESULTS The employment items misfit the Rasch Measurement model (paid employment MnSq=1.40; other employment MnSq=1.34) and were removed from subsequent iterations. The final model had eigenvalue 1.87 on the 1st contrast, suggesting unidimensionality of the remaining 7 items. Item order from least to most participation restriction was transportation, self-care, residence management, financial management, initiation, leisure, and social contact. Wright's person separation reliability for non-normal distributions was 0.93 indicating appropriateness of M2PI for making individual-level treatment decisions. Mean person measure was -0.92 logits (SD 1.34) suggesting that participants did not report restrictions on most items (item mean = 0 logits). 3.8% of the sample had the minimum score (no impairment on all items) and 0.2% had the maximum score. Four items had different item calibrations (≥0.25 logits) for females compared to males but the hierarchy of items was unchanged when the female sample was examined separately. CONCLUSION(S) These findings suggest that, although employment is a poor indicator of participation restrictions among Veterans with TBI, the M2PI is unidimensional. Because of subtle differences in scale function between male and female Veterans, M2PI should be part of a more thorough clinical interview about participation strengths and restrictions.

Abstract
School-based Physical Education (PE) is important, especially to students with disabilities whose participation in physical activities out of school is limited. The development over time of participation-related constructs in relation to students’ perceived functioning and achievement is explored. Students in mainstream inclusive secondary school self-rated their PE-specific self-efficacy, general school self-efficacy, aptitude to participate in PE, and perceived physical and socio-cognitive functional skills at two timepoints, year 7 and year 9. Results were compared between three groups of students with: disabilities (n = 28), high grades (n = 47), or low grades (n = 30) in PE. Over time, perceived physical skills of students with disabilities became strongly associated with self-efficacy and aptitude to participate. Perceived socio-cognitive skills in the study sample improved and had a positive effect on PE-specific self-efficacy. Efforts should be made to limit the accelerated negative impact of perceived restricted functioning of students with disabilities. Grading criteria need to be developed to comply with standards adapted to fit abilities of students with disabilities. Meaningful learning experiences appear to be created when participation is promoted and capacity beliefs (PE-specific self-efficacy) are boosted. Allocating resources to support the development of students’ socio-cognitive skills seem to have potential for overall positive school outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To cross-culturally adapt and investigate the psychometric properties of a Chinese-translated version of the Participation Strategies Self Efficacy Scale (PS-SES). MATERIALS AND METHODS The translation/back-translation procedure was done in line with cross-cultural adaptation international guidelines. 378 stroke survivors were recruited to complete the questionnaires. The psychometric properties of the PS-SES were evaluated by determining item analysis, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, construct validity, convergent validity and floor/ceiling effects, respectively. RESULTS The intraclass correlation coefficient using the two-way random model (ICC) (test-retest) was 0.923 (95% confidence interval (CI):0.844-0.962; p < 0.05). Cronbach's alpha and split-half reliability (internal consistency) for the PS-SES-C was 0.968 and 0.906, respectively. For the content validity, the I-CVI of the PS-SES-C was ranged from 0.860 to 1.000 and the S-CVI was 0.949. In the exploratory factor analysis, a six-factor solution explained 80.695% of the variance. A moderate correlation was found between the PS-SES-C and the Chinese version of WHODAS 2.0 (-0.430). A strong correlation was found between the PS-SES-C and the SSEQ-C (0.626). CONCLUSION The PS-SES-C showed satisfactory psychometric properties. It can be considered a reliable and valid instrument to assess the participation strategies self-efficacy of stroke survivors in China.Implications for RehabilitationThe Participation Strategies Self Efficacy Scale was translated into Chinese through a rigorous cultural adaptation process.PS-SES-C is now a reliable and valid tool for Chinese-speaking patients who have suffered from a stroke.It is necessary to assess the participation strategies self-efficacy of strokesurvivors in China and develop targeted intervention programs.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate stroke survivors' activity participation 3-months after stroke, reasons for activity participation and the change in reason for activity participation. METHOD Thirty stroke survivors were administered the Activity Card Sort-Australia concurrent with a semi-structured interview about their activity participation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and spiral content analysis. RESULTS Participants had returned, in part, to 96% of their previous leisure, social/educational and household activities 3-months after-stroke; retaining more sedentary and home-based activities but fewer physically demanding and community-based activities. Thirteen participants described a change in their reasons for their activity participation. Personal, environmental and temporal dimensions explained these reasons for activity participation, as well as the changes in reason for activity participation. Full activity participation involved participants' orchestrating a dynamic mix of fulfilling their personal desires according to their current physical, mental and emotional capacity; their social, organizational and physical environmental demands and obligations; and their routines, available time and future plans. CONCLUSION Qualitative interviews extend our understanding of the process of returning to participation in life activities and occupations following stroke to reveal that it involves the stroke survivor in a dynamic adaptation process of synchronizing personal, environmental and temporal dimensions in their daily lives.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONRehabilitation professionals need to recognize the unique knowledge and ability stroke survivors have to manage their capacities, activities, occupations and environments.Client-centered practice involving true collaborative partnerships are needed to ensure stroke survivors return more satisfactorily to their activities and occupations.Rehabilitation professionals need to continually consider the ongoing changing relationships that occur between the person, their capacities, social, organizational and physical environments, and the person's activity/occupational participation during recovery from stroke.Returning to full activity/occupational participation after stroke is a dynamic and continuous process.Rehabilitation needs to be provided in different forms at different stages beyond the immediate post-stroke time so that stroke survivors benefit from the "right rehabilitation" at the "right time" throughout their recovery journey.

Abstract
Participation in everyday activities at home and in the community is essential for children's development and well-being. Limited information exists about participation patterns of preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study examines these participation patterns in both the home and community, and the extent to which environmental factors and social communication abilities are associated with participation. Fifty-four parents of preschool-aged children with ASD completed the Participation and Environment Measure for Young Children and the Autism Classification System of Functioning: Social Communication. The children had a mean age of 48.9 (8.4) months. Patterns of participation were studied using descriptive statistics, radar graphs, and Spearman correlations. Children with ASD participated in a variety of activities at home and in the community, but showed a higher participation frequency at home. Parents identified different barriers (e.g., social demands) and supports (e.g., attitudes) in both settings. There was a moderate positive association between children's social communication abilities and their levels of involvement during participation and the diversity of activities. This study highlights the importance of social communication abilities in the participation of preschool children with ASD, and the need to support parents while they work to improve their child's participation, especially within their communities.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE A key objective of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is community integration; yet, nearly 30 yr later, little is known about the participation of people with disabilities who transition from institutions to the community. OBJECTIVE To understand how people with disabilities describe full participation after transitioning from an institution to the community and to identify environmental barriers and facilitators to participation during and after this transition. DESIGN The ADA-Participatory Action Research Consortium (ADA-PARC), a collaboration among researchers, people with disabilities, and community organizations, is implementing a multimethod, participatory action research study of participation among people with disabilities posttransition. This article presents qualitative findings from semistructured interviews collected as part of the larger ADA-PARC project. SETTING ADA-PARC community partners across the United States. PARTICIPANTS One hundred fifty-three adults with disabilities. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES We used a semistructured interview guide to ask participants about their experiences during and after transition to the community. RESULTS We identified four themes: (1) the process of transition as ongoing rather than a single event, (2) access to everyday occupations as full participation and what fully represents "living a life," (3) environmental barriers to participation, and (4) social identity as participation as the transformative process of moving from the disempowering isolation of the institution to being integrated into the community. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE As people with disabilities transition into community settings, they require ongoing supports to facilitate their full, long-term participation. WHAT THIS ARTICLE ADDS People with disabilities reported that transitioning from institutions to the community was itself not enough to support their full community participation; rather, they viewed transition as an ongoing process, and they needed services and supports to fully participate. Occupational therapy practitioners working in institutional and community settings can partner with local disability advocacy communities to support their clients' sense of identity and self-confidence during and after transition to the community.

Abstract
RÉSUMÉUne recherche interdisciplinaire faisant appel à des méthodes qualitatives a été menée pour étudier les obstacles et les facilitateurs relatifs à la participation culturelle des aînés des Premières Nations qui utilisent la mobilité sur roues et vivent dans des réserves en Ontario (Canada). Les thèmes ont été divisés en trois grandes catégories : (1) l’impact de la participation des aînés à des activités culturelles, (2) l’utilité des aides à la mobilité sur roues et (3) les obstacles freinant la participation à des événements culturels. Les obstacles incluent le manque de transports, l’incapacité de sortir du domicile en toute sécurité et de manière indépendante, l’irrégularité du terrain des réserves ; la stigmatisation associée au handicap, et le sentiment d’être un fardeau. Les résultats suggèrent que la mobilité sur roues peut augmenter la participation active des aînés aux événements culturels, mais démontrent aussi la nécessité de faciliter l’utilisation de cette mobilité dans les réserves en Ontario.

Abstract
Introduction: Defining and measuring limitations in functional status post-concussion has been challenging, as generic measures do not accurately reflect issues most relevant to adults with persistent post-concussion symptoms.Purpose: To develop a new concussion-specific measure of functional status for use in clinical practice and intervention trials.Method: We developed a conceptual model of functioning based on concepts identified from a previous qualitative study with persons with concussion and clinicians. An initial set of questionnaire items was generated from the concepts, codes, and conceptual model. Items were refined using cognitive interviews elicit feedback on their relevance and acceptability.Results: We developed an initial set of 145 items categorized by concepts that were reduced to 50. Our final item set resulted in the COncussion REcovery Questionnaire, which contains a total of 53 items split into 3 separate scales: the Post-Concussion Functional Scale, Concussion Modifiers Scale, and Global Functional Recovery Scale.Conclusion: The new Concussion Recovery Questionnaire is a self-reported measure of functional status for monitoring outcomes in clinical practice and in clinical intervention trials following concussion. Further studies are necessary to provide evidence of the measure's psychometric properties and to determine the questionnaire's ability to facilitate clinical decision-making.

Abstract
Objective: There has been a significant change within clinical practice in childhood disability from "treating" at the level of body function to ecological approaches that address the child's involvement in everyday life. Clinical assessment, and robust tools to support this, are of key importance. The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the ACHIEVE Assessment in a clinical dataset. The ACHIEVE assessment is a parent and teacher report of participation in home, school and community settings, important contributory factors for participation, and environmental factors. Design: ACHIEVE scores of children were collected from parents and teachers. The Rasch Rating Scale Model produced model estimates with WINSTEPS software. Setting: Clinical rehabilitation settings in Scotland (United Kingdom). Subjects: 401 parents and 335 teachers of 402 children participated resulting in a final sample of 736 responses. Children (78% male) were 4-17 years old (mean 7.91 years SD 2.61). Children had a range of disabilities including Developmental Coordination Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Results: The study includes a large clinical sample of children with disabilities. The results demonstrate that the ACHIEVE Assessment can provide unidimensional measurements of children's participation and important contributory factors for participation. Differential item functioning analysis indicated majority of items were comparable between parent and teacher report. Conclusions: The results confirm evidence of appropriate psychometric properties of the ACHIEVE Assessment. ACHIEVE is a comprehensive tool that enables identification of patterns and issues around participation for clinical and research purposes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Physical, cognitive and psychological factors such as self-efficacy and motivation affect participation in populations with acquired disabilities. Volition is defined as a person's motivation for participating in occupation. The concept of 'volition' expands similar concepts and theories, which focus mostly on cognitive processes that influence motivation. Although volition seems to affect participation, the association between these two concepts has not been examined in populations with acquired disabilities. This scoping review explored this association. METHODS The literature review used a structured five-stage framework, according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Seven electronic databases (CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, The Cochrane Library-Wiley, OTseeker) and Google Scholar were searched for relevant articles, published in English from January 2001 to May 2018. RESULTS A total of 18 articles, relating to populations with various diagnoses were included. Two directly examined volition and participation and showed a positive association between them. Other articles discussed the effect of participants' chronic condition on their volition and participation, the effect of volition on participation, or the effect on participation of an intervention addressing volition. CONCLUSIONS An acquired disability affects both volition and participation, and volition seems to affect participation among people with acquired disabilities. Few articles showed positive effects of interventions that addressed clients' volition, on participation. Further research should include additional health conditions and types of literature, to better understand the association between these concepts. This understanding will contribute to the development of occupational therapy interventions that emphasise volition, in order to improve participation outcomes.

Abstract
The Activity Card Sort (ACS) measures the level of participation, as perceived by each person which, unlike other scales, makes it both personal and significant. However, there is a limitation to applying the ACS to Spanish older adults as it is restricted to culturally relevant activities solely in the United States. Therefore, the aim of this study was to select activity items that reflected Spanish older adults' lifestyles in order to develop the Activity Card Sort-Spain Version (ACS-SP). Frequently, activities performed in Spain (n = 103) were listed in an initial draft. The Likert scale was administrated to a large group of Spanish nationals over the age of 60 years (n = 98) to establish which type of activities will be eventually included in the Spanish version. The final version was drawn up comprising 79 activities distributed between four performance areas. In addition, other activities that were not previously included by other assessment tools were considered and have been listed in this review, such as taking a nap, going out for a drink or “tapas,” or searching for a job. The gradual adaptation to ACS for Spaniards will make it possible to measure the level of an individual's participation within a community. However, further work on psychometric properties is needed.

Abstract
Participation is a primary goal of neurorehabilitation; however, most individuals post stroke experience significant restrictions in participation as they attempt to resume their everyday roles and routines. Despite this emphasis on participation, there is a paucity of evidence-based interventions for optimizing this outcome and a limited understanding of factors that contribute to poor participation outcomes. Caregiver support at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation positively influences physical and psychological outcomes after stroke but more research is needed to understand the association between social support and participation. This study aimed to examine the independent contribution of perceived social support to participation 3 months post discharge from inpatient stroke rehabilitation. This study was a secondary analysis of the Stroke Recovery in Underserved Populations 2005–2006 data. Participants were adults ≥55 years old, living in the community 3 months post discharge from inpatient rehabilitation for ischemic stroke (n = 422). Hierarchical linear regressions were performed. The primary variables of interest were the PAR-PRO Measure of Home and Community Participation and the Duke–University of North Carolina Functional Social Support Questionnaire. Perceived social support at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation for ischemic stroke contributed uniquely to the variance in participation 3 months later (β = 0.396, P < 0.001) after controlling for race, sex, age, years of education, comorbidities, stroke symptoms, depression, FIM Motor, and FIM Cognitive. Social support accounted for 12.2% of the variance in participation and was the strongest predictor of participation relative to the other independently significant predictors in the model including FIM Motor and depression. There is already a focus on caregiver training during inpatient rehabilitation related to basic self-care, transfers, and medical management. These findings suggest the need for rehabilitation professionals to also address social support during discharge planning in the context of promoting participation. Given the findings, expanding caregiver training is necessary but novel interventions and programs must be carefully developed to avoid increasing caregiver burden.

Abstract
Purpose: Participation in activities of everyday life is seen as main goal of rehabilitation after a stroke and return to work is an important factor to consider for the substantial number of persons having a stroke at working age. The current study aims to investigate whether returning to work would predict self-perceived participation and autonomy in everyday life after a stroke, from a long-term perspective.Materials and methods: Persons with first-ever stroke at age 18-63 years in 2009-2010, Gothenburg, were included. As 5-year follow-up, the Impact on Participation and Autonomy questionnaire was sent out, investigating self-perceived participation/autonomy in five levels, and work status was investigated from national sick-absence registers. Prediction of work on participation/autonomy was investigated with logistic regression.Results: A total of 109 participants (49%) responded to the questionnaire. The majority (69-94%) perceived very good participation/autonomy in all domains and 59% were working 5 years after stroke. Working was a significant predictor of high participation/autonomy in all domains of the questionnaire.Conclusions: Being able to return to work after a stroke seems to be important for self-perceived participation/autonomy. This emphasizes the importance of work-oriented information and rehabilitation after a stroke at working age.Implications for rehabilitationThe current study shows that the majority report high self-perceived participation and autonomy in everyday life and 59% are working 5 years after a stroke in working age.To work 5 years after a stroke was a significant predictor for self-perceived participation and autonomy in everyday life.Since stroke is becoming more common among working age persons and work seem important for perceived participation and autonomy, to optimize the return to work by for instance work-oriented information and vocational rehabilitation is important.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify and describe the contextual factors that influence the participation of people with deafblindness in India. DESIGN Qualitative study, using directed content analysis approach and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a framework to analyze the data. SETTING Community and social participation settings. PARTICIPANTS Community-dwelling individuals with deafblindness (N=16). Age ranges from 18-45 years. INTERVENTIONS Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Personal and environmental factors that influence the participation of individuals with deafblindness using the ICF framework. RESULTS Results indicate that the age of onset and nature of impairment (deafblindness) and willingness to explain the condition (functional consequences of deafblindness) emerged as important personal factors. Access to resources such as assistive technology, social support, and deafblind-specific services were found to be enablers of participation. Lack of services, systems, and policies specific to deafblindness along with negative societal attitude toward disability were highly perceived environmental barriers that influence participation of people with deafblindness in India. CONCLUSIONS Professionals must acknowledge aspects of the environment in conducting assessments and delivering interventions and understand the dynamic interactions between environment of the individual and his/her concurrent vision and hearing impairments. Approaches to enable participation require rehabilitation professionals to work with those with deafblindness to advocate for removal of environmental barriers and ensure provision of appropriate resources from the government to facilitate their participation. Social policy and government must ensure emphasis on awareness about deafblindness, access to deafblind-specific services, positive societal attitude, and opportunities for full participation for people with deafblindness in society.

Abstract
Introduction Improvement of arm-hand function and arm-hand skill performance in stroke patients is reported by many authors. However, therapy content often is poorly described, data on actual arm-hand use are scarce, and, as follow-up time often is very short, little information on patients’ mid- and long-term progression is available. Also, outcome data mainly stem from either a general patient group, unstratified for the severity of arm-hand impairment, or a very specific patient group. Objectives To investigate to what extent the rate of improvement or deterioration of actual arm-hand use differs between stroke patients with either a severely, moderately or mildly affected arm-hand, during and after rehabilitation involving a well-defined rehabilitation program. Methods Design: single–armed prospective cohort study. Outcome measure: affected arm-hand use during daily tasks (accelerometry), expressed as ‘Intensity-of arm-hand-use’ and ‘Duration-of-arm-hand-use’ during waking hours. Measurement dates: at admission, clinical discharge and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months post-discharge. Statistics: Two-way repeated measures ANOVAs. Results Seventy-six patients (63 males); mean age: 57.6 years (sd:10.6); post-stroke time: 29.8 days (sd:20.1) participated. Between baseline and 1-year follow-up, Intensity-of-arm-hand-use on the affected side increased by 51%, 114% and 14% (p < .000) in the mildly, moderately and severely affected patients, respectively. Similarly, Duration-of-arm-hand-use increased by 26%, 220% and 161% (p < .000). Regarding bimanual arm-hand use: Intensity-of-arm-hand-use increased by 44%, 74% and 30% (p < .000), whereas Duration-of-arm-hand-use increased by 10%, 22% and 16% (p < .000). Conclusion Stroke survivors with a severely, moderately or mildly affected arm-hand showed different, though (clinically) important, improvements in actual arm-hand use during the rehabilitation phase. Intensity-of-arm-hand-use and Duration-of-arm-hand-use significantly improved in both unimanual and bimanual tasks/skills. These improvements were maintained until at least 1 year post-discharge.

Abstract
Objective To enhance the understanding of long-term participation in working-aged people 7–8 years after stroke. Methods This study had a qualitative design, using a thematic analysis methodology. Eleven individuals took part in an in depth interview 7–8 years after a first time stroke. They had received care at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, and were recruited as a heterogenic sample with respect to age, gender, stroke severity and subtype. Results From the participants’ experiences four themes emerged: “Returning to work after stroke”; “Working life 7–8 years after stroke”; “Social life 7–8 years after stroke”; and “A state of reorientation in life”. Quotes about experienced participation in everyday life were summarized and presented as “Participation after stroke narratives”. Participants chose to emphasize on work- and social life when describing situations of successful participation. Being included in the wider community and having a sense of purpose, when interacting with others, were factors that these narratives had in common. Participants had gradually become accustomed to a somewhat altered life situation. Some consequences after stroke were still considered frustrating in social or work situations. However, the importance of these issues had reduced and were no longer problematized. Conclusions Participants felt content with their everyday life in general, which was a principal and positive result of this study. Reaching a stage of acceptance seemed to be a complex and continuous struggle, and an individual approach in long-term rehabilitation would be valuable to support this personal process. More knowledge about what factors that facilitate participation in people of working-age many years after stroke is needed, so that more people can reach a state of positive identity and participation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the incidence and number of occupational gaps 5 years after stroke and find possible predictors and explanatory factors for increased number of experienced gaps. MATERIAL AND METHODS The participants were diagnosed with first-time stroke in Gothenburg during 2009-2010. Medical records from their hospital stay were used to obtain baseline data. The Occupational Gaps Questionnaire and the Swedish stroke registers follow-up questionnaire were sent out. Data from the Occupational Gaps Questionnaire were used as a dependent variable and baseline data and questions from the stroke registry were used as independent variables in logistic regression. RESULTS Five years poststroke, 49.5% experienced a higher number of occupational gaps compared to a healthy reference population. Predictors for an increased number of gaps were higher age at stroke onset and a higher degree of functional dependency. Explanatory factors for an increased number of gaps in the study population were higher age at follow-up and feelings of depression. CONCLUSIONS Older age at the time of stroke and functional dependency can predict an increased number of occupational gaps. Older age and feelings of depression are connected to an increased number of occupational gaps. Individuals at risk should be provided with additional interventions to reduce participation restrictions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Participation in community-based recreation and leisure activities may afford valuable opportunities to young people with cognitive disabilities (CD) to develop important self-determination skills needed for success in adulthood. To evaluate whether these programmes are achieving their intended impact, it is important to have a tool that captures the perspective of the participants using an accessible method. This article describes the content development and evaluation of accessibility and feasibility of the Participatory Experience Survey (PES). METHOD Participant observation and focus group sessions were conducted in conjunction with a summer youth programme hosted by a special education advocacy organisation. Photos were used to guide identification of factors influencing both negative and positive experiences. Findings informed question content. Three groups of stakeholders, parents of youth with CD (Group 1), service providers (Group 2), and experts in cognitive disability and/or programme planning (Group 3) reviewed the PES to provide feedback on the relevance and accessibility of the measure. After stakeholder feedback was incorporated, cognitive interviewing was conducted with young people with CD to assess instrument accessibility and appropriateness for use in context. RESULTS Youth described their participation in three categories: personal, social and environmental. Stakeholder Groups 1 and 2 identified 15 questions as needing revisions. Seven additional questions were added based on suggestions from stakeholder Group 3. Cognitive interviewing led to revision of 13 questions and removal of 16 questions due to issues related to vocabulary, item meaning, response bias, repetitiveness and length. CONCLUSION The PES has the potential to offer programmes a means to more fully include young people with disabilities in programme evaluations, leading to better-structured, more supportive programmes. Additional validity and feasibility work is needed to confirm these initial findings.

Abstract
Purpose: Deafblindness, also known as dual sensory loss, creates a distinct condition more disabling than either deafness or blindness alone. The participation experiences of persons with deafblindness have not been understood well. This phenomenological study aims to understand the meanings of participation for persons with deafblindness and identify the domains of life that are important to them.Methods: We used the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as a guiding framework. Sixteen adults with deafblindness were interviewed between March and May 2017 in India using a qualitative interview guide.Results: Findings suggest participation as a dynamic, individualized construct that is not just an end outcome. Rather, it is a means to achieve other goals important to the participants such as gaining respect, autonomy, independence, support and relationships, to fulfill aspirations and responsibilities, and to feel included and recognized in society. Life domains that they deemed important for participation were communication and access to information, mobility, relationships, education and productivity, and recreation and leisure.Conclusions: In order to enhance societal participation of people with deafblindness, a significant change in the focus of rehabilitation services is required which involves professionals viewing participation as both a means and an end outcome while designing interventions.

Abstract
Background. Current assessments do not capture the dynamic and complex process of managing different individual and environmental factors influencing community participation post-stroke. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Community Participation Activation Scale (CPAS) in persons with stroke. Method. Rating scale structure, unidimensionality, reliability and precision, construct validity, and differential item functioning of the CPAS were examined with 93 community-dwelling people with stroke. Findings. The CPAS consists of 15 action items and 10 attitude items. Person separation reliabilities of the action and attitude domains were .75 and .72, respectively, and internal consistency reliabilities were good (>.80). The CPAS showed low to moderate correlation with community integration and enfranchisement constructs. Implications. The CPAS may be used as an assessment to better understand an individual’s level of activation and to inform individually designed, participation-focused interventions, although it needs further improvement to be used as a clinical measure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deafblindness, also known as dual sensory loss, is a varying combination of visual and hearing impairment in the same individual. Interest in this topic has increased recently due to evidence suggesting an increase in prevalence of this condition among older adults. Persons with deafblindness frequently experience participation barriers and social isolation. Developing an understanding of their experiences can inform the design of programs and policies to enhance participation of people with deafblindness in society. OBJECTIVE To identify and summarize available research literature on participation experiences of people with deafblindness or dual sensory loss. METHODS A comprehensive literature search of eight databases (CINAHL/EBSCO, Embase, ERIC, Global Health, MEDLINE, ProQuest, PsycINFO, PubMed) was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) during January 2017 and last updated in June 2017. In addition, non-peer reviewed (grey) literature was also retrieved in the form of online published reports of research projects by 16 deafblind-specific organizations across the globe. To be included, sources had to be published after 1990, had persons with deafblindness as the focal population, and focused on their participation experiences. RESULTS A total 1172 sources were identified of which 54 studies were included. The findings reveal that persons with deafblindness, regardless of origin of their impairment, experience difficulty in communication, mobility, daily living functioning, and social interactions. While these experiences may vary between individuals with congenital versus acquired conditions, they generally feel socially isolated, insecure and uncertain about their future. CONCLUSION Participation experiences of persons with deafblindness are shaped by dynamic interactions between personal factors (such as onset and type of impairments) and environmental influences (such as attitude, technology, and supports). A better understanding of participation experiences may help professionals in placing emphasis on affected participation domains to design services to enhance participation of people with deafblindness.

Abstract
Participation is a central concept in health and well-being and healthcare, yet operationalizing this concept has been difficult. Its definition, uses in healthcare, and impacts on recovery require ongoing research. Our review question goes like this: from the longitudinal evidence investigating participation among stroke survivors, what are the patterns of participation recovery in stroke survivors over time, and what interventions are used to improve participation? To fully understand these questions, we also ask, how is participation defined in the stroke literature, and what are the measures of participation used in the stroke literature? A systematic scoping review was undertaken using the search terms "stroke," "longitudinal," "participation," and "outcome" in seven databases. Articles included were published until April 2017, written in English, and had at least two longitudinal assessments of participation. Fifty-nine articles met the inclusion criteria. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health was the most frequent definition of participation used (34%). There were 22 different measures of participation. Eight of ten studies demonstrated significant improvements in participation up to 12 months poststroke. Efficacy of interventions and their impact on participation varied. The various definitions, measures, and intervention efficacies of participation highlight the need for further research worldwide into achieving meaningful participation and quality of life among stroke survivors. Future practice should include participation as a main outcome measure.

Abstract
The influence of a person's environment and its modifying potential on participation is well recognized for most childhood disabilities, but scarcely studied for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A scoping review was conducted, the aim of which was to map the existing literature about supporting and hindering environments for the participation of adolescents with ASD. Sources of scientific evidence were searched for in four databases. Inclusion criteria were the perspectives of adolescents between 12 and 21, families, peers, or significant others; ecologic validity; and a clear connection between environment and participation. The publication dates ranged from 2001 to 2014 and partly up to 2018. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) served as the guiding framework for inclusion/exclusion during the selection process. Thematic analysis was performed by five independent reviewers. Results were additionally validated by stakeholders. This scoping review identified 5528 articles, and finally included 31 studies. Two main themes were found: "providing security" indicates how the environment, and specifically the parental, physical, and informational environments, have a securing or intimidating effect. The second theme, "helping to connect", indicates which environments support or hinder social relationships or social activities, and hence participation. An additional third main theme, "tension in participation", relates to ambiguities that seem essential to understand participation or isolation of adolescents with ASD. Results show that participation is a value-laden concept. This research widens the field of dealing with adolescents with ASD, as it directs attention towards the responsibility of the environment regarding participation.

Abstract
Purpose: Evaluating the influence of person-environment interactions on students' performance is a fundamental requirement for planning individualized educational interventions. Such understanding grounded the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as a reference framework to support special needs assessment in the Portuguese educational system. This study sought to investigate the extent to which special education teams reported relationships between Body Functions, Activities and Participation, and Environmental Factors in Individualized Education Programmes for students with additional support needs and what types of relations were mostly described.Materials and methods: Using content analysis, 176 Individualized Education Programmes were examined. A coding scheme based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health was developed to categorize and quantify code-relations.Results and conclusions: Code-relations consisted in 6.1% out of the total of meaning units found in textual segments concerning assessment and intervention processes. Code-relations were chiefly focused on mental functions, learning and applying knowledge, and products and technology. Intervention plans were predominantly presented as separate lists of goals and strategies, focusing Activities and Participation (67.8%), Body Functions (16.1%) and Environmental Factors (16.2%). Within the reduced amount of contents in which there was a match between goals and strategies, only 8.2% were directly connected with assessment data. Recommendations are made for the implementation of an interactive approach when using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in educational contexts.Implications for rehabilitationThe adoption of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in the educational context goes beyond the use of a universal language including, as well, the potential to foster a multidimensional and comprehensive approach to students' needs.Professionals' approach in special needs assessment is often partial and segmented, suggesting a narrow understanding of the relationships between body functions, activities and participation, and environmental factors.Our findings support the need for an expanded focus on person-environment interactions, considering students' participation in different domains of life - besides learning - as well as the impact of environmental barriers over students' participation;Training programmes centred on a biopsychosocial understanding of human functioning, the establishment of a transdisciplinary collaborative culture and the use of dynamic assessment tools may equip professionals with appropriate conditions to use the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health within an interactive perspective.

Abstract
Task-specific dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by a painless loss of dexterity specific to a particular motor skill. This disorder is prevalent among writers, musicians, dancers and athletes. No current treatment is predictably effective, and the disorder generally ends the careers of affected individuals. Traditional disease models of dystonia have a number of limitations with regard to task-specific dystonia. We therefore discuss emerging evidence that the disorder has its origins within normal compensatory mechanisms of a healthy motor system in which the representation and reproduction of motor skill are disrupted. We describe how risk factors for task-specific dystonia can be stratified and translated into mechanisms of dysfunctional motor control. The proposed model aims to define new directions for experimental research and stimulate therapeutic advances for this highly disabling disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown that stroke has a differential impact in women compared to men. Women are more likely to survive strokes than men, yet they experience more severe strokes resulting in greater poststroke disability. However, few studies have characterized sex differences in functional ability after stroke. This study examined sex differences in long-term disability among stroke survivors. METHODS This was a retrospective analysis of the 2015 National Health Interview Survey. Respondents were asked to rate their ability to perform 11 functional tasks. Univariate comparisons were completed to evaluate sex differences in performance, and multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the odds of reporting functional limitations. RESULTS Five hundred fourteen men and 641 women stroke survivors completed the survey (mean age: 66.9 years). Approximately 75% of the sample reported having hypertension, 61% high cholesterol, 33% diabetes, 24% heart disease, 21% heart attack, and 16% chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In the predictive models, men were less likely to report "very difficult/can't do at all" in walking ¼ mile (odds ratios [OR] = 0.68, 95% CI 0.51-0.90), climbing 10 steps (OR = 0.65, 95% CI 0.49-0.85), standing 2 hours (OR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.50-0.87), stooping (OR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.39-0.68), reaching overhead (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.49-0.97), carrying 10 pounds (OR = 0.45, 95% CI 0.34-0.59), and pushing large objects (OR = 0.37, 95% CI 0.28-0.5) compared to women. CONCLUSIONS The functional outcomes of men stroke survivors were significantly greater than women. The specific factors that contribute to sex differences in stroke-related outcomes are not entirely clear. Future research is needed to better understand these differences to ensure that equity of care is received.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined patterns of social participation among individuals experiencing their first dysvascular lower extremity amputation. We identified the types of social participation valued by this population and explored factors that were associated with individuals' levels of participation and their subjective satisfaction with participation. DESIGN A prospective cohort was recruited from four Veterans Administration Medical Centers and followed for 1 yr after amputation. Social participation was measured with a modified version of the Community Integration Questionnaire. Potential correlates included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Modified Social Support Survey, Locomotor Capability Index 5, Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire, and self-rated health. RESULTS At 1-yr postamputation, participants indicated that the most valued aspects of social participation were maintaining close friendships, visiting loved ones, and managing finances. Levels of social participation and satisfaction with participation were modest at 1-yr postamputation. Higher levels of social participation at 1 yr were related to better baseline mental status, better premorbid mobility, and lower amputation level. Higher satisfaction with participation was related to greater baseline social support. CONCLUSIONS Individuals' social participation may be influenced by physical and cognitive factors, whereas their satisfaction with participation may be influenced by psychosocial factors. Rehabilitation specialists are encouraged to address both aspects of social participation when formulating and pursuing rehabilitation goals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To promote health and well-being, and to meet the desires of the growing elderly population to age in place, elderly spousal caregivers need adequate support such as respite care services. More knowledge is needed about elderly spousal caregivers' experiences in relation to participation, which is an aspect of health that remains relatively unexplored for this group. AIM To explore and describe how elderly spousal caregivers experience and discuss participation in everyday life when living in shifting contexts due to the use of respite care. METHOD A grounded theory approach was used during data generation and analysis, which involved repeated focus group interviews with 12 spousal caregivers. RESULTS Complexity and ambiguity was understood to imbue participation in everyday life. Being in charge of everyday life was challenging for spousal caregivers, and created a need for personal time. Respite care and home care service gave them time, although when interacting with social contexts other issues arose that influenced their own recovery. CONCLUSIONS A holistic 'situation centered' approach that focuses on the elderly couple's life story and needs might capture a wider perspective and enable adequate support that influences their health, well-being, and participation in everyday life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Studies have investigated predictors of participation and showed that fewer depressive symptoms, physical independence, and age could predict the level of participation after stroke. Association between self-assessed functions and perceived levels of participation over time is not yet known. The aim of this study was to investigate perceptions of participation and how this related to background characteristics and self-assessed rehabilitation outcomes, at 1, 6, and 12 months post-stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS To capture experienced functioning and participation, a self-assessment questionnaire, the Stroke Impact Scale (SIS), was used at 1, 6, and 12 months post-stroke. Possible variables with impact on perceived participation were investigated with logistic regression: perceived physical functions, memory and thinking, emotion and communication (SIS), as well as background characteristics. In addition, directions, distributions, and strength of correlations between each independent variable and the participation domain were analyzed using scatterplots. RESULTS Participation scores were widely distributed during the first year post-stroke. Significant associations were only found between perceived Physical score and participation during the first year post-stroke (1 month, n=92, P<.001; 6 months, n=79, P=.001; 12 months, n=78, P=.002). A moderate-to-high participation score was observed in combination with a high level of perceived emotional health and cognitive skills, at 1, 6, and 12 months. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that to improve participation during the first year post-stroke, physical functioning as well as emotional and cognitive health can be important areas of concern when forming rehabilitation interventions.

Abstract
Environment plays a vital role in affecting participation of young children in home, school, and community. Knowledge of environmental barriers helps to develop solutions or strategies that enable participation. The study compared the environmental barriers perceived by parents of preschool children with physical disabilities (PD, n = 142) and with typical development (TD, n = 192) in Taiwan. Parents identified environmental barriers by structured interview using the Chinese version of the Child and Adolescent Scale of Environment (CASE-C). The CASE-C is an 18-item measure of the impact of problems with physical, social, and attitudinal environmental features. Differences between the PD and TD groups in the summary scores for the CASE-C and the percentages of parents who perceived a problem for each item were examined by the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and Chi-square test. Parents of children with PD more often identified barriers related to family resources and community programs or services, social attitudes, assistance and supports outside of home, physical design of home and community, transportation, and assistive devices or equipment. Greater impacts of barriers were also reported by parents of preschool children with PD. Our findings provide evidence of environmental barriers that inform practice and policies to modify the barriers and provide an accessible and inclusive environment for families with young children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The quality of life in neurological disorders (Neuro-QoL) is a U.S. National Institutes of Health initiative that produced a set of self-report measures of physical, mental, and social health experienced by adults or children who have a neurological condition or disorder. OBJECTIVE To describe the content of the Neuro-QoL at the item level using the World Health Organization's international classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF). METHODS We assessed the Neuro-QoL for its content coverage of functioning and disability relative to each of the four ICF domains (i.e., body functions, body structures, activities and participation, and environment). We used second-level ICF three-digit codes to classify items into categories within each ICF domain and computed the percentage of categories within each ICF domain that were represented in the Neuro-QoL items. RESULTS All items of Neuro-QoL could be mapped to the ICF categories at the second-level classification codes. The activities and participation domain and the mental functions category of the body functions domain were the areas most often represented by Neuro-QoL. Neuro-QoL provides limited coverage of the environmental factors and body structure domains. CONCLUSIONS Neuro-QoL measures map well to the ICF. The Neuro-QoL-ICF-mapped items provide a blueprint for users to select appropriate measures in ICF-based measurement applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the impact on participation and autonomy (IPA) questionnaire. The Finnish version of IPA (IPAFin) was translated into Finnish using the protocol for linguistic validation for patient-reported outcomes instruments. METHODS A total of 194 persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) (mean age 50 years SD 9, 72% female) with moderate to severe disability participated in this study. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to confirm the four factor structure of the IPAFin. The work and educational opportunities domain was excluded from analysis, because it was only applicable to 51 persons. Internal consistency was investigated by calculating Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS CFA confirmed the construct validity of the IPA (standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) = 0.06, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.93, Tucker-Lewis index =0.93, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.06), indicating a good fit to the model. There was no difference in the models for females and males. Cronbach's alpha for the domains ranged between 0.80 and 0.91, indicating good homogeneity. CONCLUSIONS The construct validity and reliability of the IPAFin is acceptable. IPAFin is a suitable measure of participation in persons with MS.
