Metallurgical slag properties as a support material for bimetallic nanoparticles and their use in the removal of malachite green dye

Zinc oxide decorated plantain peel activated carbon for adsorption of cationic malachite green dye: Mechanistic, kinetics and thermodynamics modeling

Reports have shown that malachite green (MG) dye causes various hormonal disruptions and health hazards, hence, its removal from water has become a top priority. In this work, zinc oxide decorated plantain peels activated carbon (ZnO@PPAC) was developed via a hydrothermal approach. Physicochemical characterization of the ZnO@PPAC nanocomposite with a 205.2 m2/g surface area, porosity of 614.68 and dominance of acidic sites from Boehm study established the potency of ZnO@PPAC. Spectroscopic characterization of ZnO@PPAC vis-a-viz thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Powdered X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy and High Resolution - Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) depict the thermal stability via phase transition, functional group, crystallinity with interspatial spacing, morphology and spherical and nano-rod-like shape of the ZnO@PPAC heterostructure with electron mapping respectively. Adsorption of malachite green dye onto ZnO@PPAC nanocomposite was influenced by different operational parameters. Equilibrium data across the three temperatures (303, 313, and 323 K) were most favorably described by Freundlich indicating the ZnO@PPAC heterogeneous nature. 77.517 mg/g monolayer capacity of ZnO@PPAC was superior to other adsorbents compared. Pore-diffusion predominated in the mechanism and kinetic data best fit the pseudo-second-order. Thermodynamics studies showed the feasible, endothermic, and spontaneous nature of the sequestration. The ZnO@PPAC was therefore shown to be a sustainable and efficient material for MG dye uptake and hereby endorsed for the treatment of industrial effluent.

Electrochemical sensors modified with iron oxide nanoparticles/nanocomposites for voltammetric detection of Pb (II) in water: A review

Permissible limits of Pb2+ in drinking water are being reduced from 10 μgL-1 to 5 μgL-1, which calls for rapid, and highly reliable detection techniques. Electrochemical sensors have garnered attention in detection of heavy metal ions in environmental samples due to their ease of operation, low cost, and rapid detection responses. Selectivity, sensitivity and detection capabilities of these sensors, can be enhanced by modifying their working electrodes (WEs) with iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and/or their composites. Therefore, this review is an in-depth analysis of the deployment of IONPs/nanocomposites in modification of electrochemical sensors for detection of Pb2+ in drinking water over the past decade. From the analyzed studies (n = 23), the optimal solution pH, deposition potential, and deposition time ranged between 3 and 5.6, -0.7 to -1.4 V vs Ag/AgCl, and 100-400 s, respectively. Majority of the studies employed square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (n = 16), in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution (n = 19) for detection of Pb2+. Limits of detection obtained (2.5 x 10-9 - 4.5 μg/L) were below the permissible levels which indicated good sensitivities of the modified electrodes. Despite the great performance of these modified electrodes, the primary source of IONPs has always been commercial iron-based salts in addition to the use of so many materials as modifying agents of these IONPs. This may limit reproducibility and sustainability of the WEs due to lengthy and costly preparation protocols. Steel and/or iron industrial wastes can be alternatively employed in generation of IONPs for modification of electrochemical sensors. Additionally, biomass-based activated carbons enriched with surface functional groups are also used in modification of bare IONPs, and subsequently bare electrodes. However, these two areas still need to be fully explored.

Non-conventional, burnt Shorea robusta leaf extract mediated green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles and facile removal of eriochrome black T dye from water

The present study evaluates the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using water extract of Sal leaves (Shorea Robusta) for efficient removal of Eriochrome black-T from the water and wastewater. The material is characterized using FESEM, FTIR, EDX, pHzpc, XRD, BET, and TGA analysis. XRD confirmed the synthesis of ZnO with an average crystallite size of 35.24 nm a surface area of 95.939 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.280 cm3/g. The pHzpc of the material is 7.45. The study evaluates the effects of contact time (0-100 min), pH (3-10), concentration (10-50 mg/L), and temperature (298-328K). The Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.993) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.998) were found to be the best-fit models. The maximum uptake capacity is 265.554 mg/g. The interaction is spontaneous (ΔG° -12.889 to-14.898 kJ/mol), endothermic ΔH° (4.290-14.216 kJ/mol) with an increase in spontaneity at the solid-liquid junction. The dye-loaded ZnO NPs were successfully regenerated in dilute NaOH solution and 1:1 methanol water, achieving regeneration efficiencies of 78% and 60%, respectively. The reusability of the ZnO NPs was ascertained for up to three consecutive cycles.

Effective removal of malachite green from local dyeing wastewater using zinc-tungstate based materials

The frequent use of an industrial dye such as malachite green (MG) has caused major water body deterioration and is one of the most pressing global challenges, demanding effective treatment techniques. To solve these issues, a simplistic method was developed to synthesize zinc-tungstate (ZnWO4) nanoparticles and also dope the surface matrix of the ZnWO4 nanoparticles using nonmetals of boron (B), carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) at different ratios for enhanced MG removal from wastewater. The prepared nanomaterials were characterized by different methods for crystal structure composition, surface properties, surface morphology, microstructures, functional groups, and elemental oxidation states. The BET analysis revealed a mesoporous structure with surface areas of 30.740 m2/g for ZnWO4, 38.513 m2/g for ZnWO4@BCN, 37.368 m2/g for ZnWO4@BCN/B, 39.325 m2/g for ZnWO4@BCN/C, and 45.436 m2/g for ZnWO4@BCN/N nanocomposites. The best removal of MG was accomplished at pH (8), contact period (50 min), nanoadsorbent dose (0.8 g/L), initial MG concentration (20 mg/L), and temperature (303 K). The maximum adsorption capacities of ZnWO4 and ZnWO4@BCN/N towards MG were 218.645 and 251.758 mg/g, respectively. At equilibrium, the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were the best fits for the experimental data of MG adsorption on both nanoadsorbents. After eight cycles of adsorption and desorption, both ZnWO4 and ZnWO4@BCN/N were found to be good at removing MG, with efficiencies of 71.00 and 74.20%, respectively. Thermodynamic investigations further validated the spontaneity and endothermic nature of the adsorption process. All study findings confirm the nanoadsorbents exceptional capability and economic feasibility for removing MG dye.

Iron oxide nanoparticles/nanocomposites derived from steel and iron wastes for water treatment: A review

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are characterized by superior magnetic properties, high surface area to volume ratio, and active surface functional groups. These properties aid in removal of pollutants from water, through adsorption and/or photocatalysis, justifying the choice of IONPs in water treatment systems. IONPs are usually developed from commercial chemicals of ferric and ferrous salts alongside other reagents, a procedure that is costly, environmentally unfriendly and limits their mass production. On the other hand, steel and iron industries produce both solid and liquid wastes which in most cases are piled, discharged into water streams or landfilled as strategies to dispose them off. Such practices are detrimental to environmental ecosystems. Given the high content of iron present in these wastes, they can be used to generate IONPs. This work reviewed published literature through selected key words on the deployment of steel and/or iron-based wastes as IONPs precursors for water treatment. The findings reveal that steel waste-derived IONPs have properties such as specific surface area, particle sizes, saturation magnetization, and surface functional groups that are comparable or sometimes better than those synthesized from commercial salts. Furthermore, the steel waste-derived IONPs have high removal efficacy for heavy metals and dyes from water with possibilities of being regenerated. The performance of steel waste-derived IONPs can be enhanced by functionalization with different reagents such as chitosan, graphene, and biomass based activated carbons. Nonetheless, there is need to explore the potential of steel waste-based IONPs in removing contaminants of emerging concern, modifying pollutant detection sensors, their techno-economic feasibility in large treatment plants, toxicity of these nanoparticles when ingested into the human body, among other areas.

A novel MIL-125(Ti)-based nanocomposite for enhanced adsorption and catalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride: Synergetic mechanism of calcination and the nitrogen-containing reticulated surface layer

A multi-nitrogen conjugated organic molecule (TPE-2Py) was selected to surface modify the calcined MIL-125(Ti) to prepare a nanocomposite (TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti)) for adsorption and photodegradation of organic pollutant (tetracycline hydrochloride) under visible light. A novel reticulated surface layer was formed on the nanocomposite, and the adsorption capacity of TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti) for tetracycline hydrochloride can reach 157.7 mg/g under neutral conditions, which is higher than that of most other reported materials. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies show that the adsorption is a spontaneous heat absorption process, dominated by chemisorption, in which electrostatic interaction, π-π conjugation and Ti-N covalent bonds played dominant roles. The photocatalytic study shows that the visible photo-degradation efficiency of TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti) for tetracycline hydrochloride can further reach 89.1% after adsorption. Mechanism studies reveal that •O₂^- and h⁺ play a major role in the degradation process, and the separation and transfer rate of photo-generated carriers increase, improving its visible photocatalytic performance. This study revealed the relationship between the adsorption/photocatalytic properties of the nanocomposite and the structure of the molecular as well as the calcination, providing a convenient strategy to regulate the removal efficiency of MOFs materials towards organic pollutants. Furthermore, TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti) exhibits good reusability and even better removal efficiency for tetracycline hydrochloride in real water samples, indicating its sustainable treatment of pollutants in contaminated water.

Mechanism and isotherm modeling of effective adsorption of malachite green as endocrine disruptive dye using Acid Functionalized Maize Cob (AFMC)

Cationic Malachite green has been identified as a candidate for the endocrine disruptive compound found in the environment. In this study, the mechanism and isotherm modeling of effective adsorption of cationic malachite green dye onto acid-functionalized maize cob (AFMC) was investigated by batch technique. The operational parameters such as initial concentration (100–600 mg/L); contact time (10–120 min) and pH (3–10) influenced the removal efficiency and quantity adsorbed. A maximum of 99.3% removal efficiency was obtained at optimum conditions. AFMC physicochemical properties (surface area 1329 m²/g and particle size 300 μm < Ф < 250 μm) enhanced its efficiency. Based on R² > 0.97 and consistently low values of adsorption statistical error functions (ASEF), equilibrium data were best fitted to Freundlich isotherm. Kinetic data were best described by a pseudo-second-order model with consistent R² > 0.98 and validated by ASEF. The mechanism of the process was better described by intraparticle diffusion. Evidence of the adsorption process was confirmed by the change in morphology via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and surface chemistry by Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR). The performance of AFMC enlisted it as a sustainable and promising low-cost adsorbent from agro-residue for treatment of endocrine disruptive dye polluted water.

Forward osmosis membranes for high-efficiency desalination with Nano-MoS2 composite substrates

Attractive membranes are critical for improving efficiencies of forward osmosis (FO) desalination process. In this study, a novel FO-PES-MoS₂ thin film composite (TFC) membrane was assembled using the phase transfer method through merging MoS₂ nanosheets into substrate casting solution. A sequence of characterization techniques was applied to test microstructures and physicochemical properties of the membranes and modification mechanisms based on MoS₂ concentrations. Desalination efficiencies of the fabricated membranes were assessed by three NaCl draw solutions. Compared to the blank membrane, the MoS₂-contained membranes had a thinner active layer, more upright and open pore structure, higher porosity, and lower surface roughness. 1 wt% MoS₂ content was the optimal modification condition, and water flux increased by 35.01% under this condition. Simultaneously, reverse salt flux of the FO-PES-1-MoS₂ membrane declined by 29.15% under 1 M NaCl draw solution, indicating increased salt ion rejection performance of the modified membranes. Moreover, J_s/J_v ratio indicated that MoS₂ nanosheets helped stabilize the desalination performance of the membranes. This study demonstrated that the novel FO-PES-MoS₂ TFC membranes possessed improved performances and showed promising properties for saline water desalination.

An AFM-IR study on surface properties of nano-TiO2 coated polyethylene (PE) thin film as influenced by photocatalytic aging process

Most plastic wastes undergo extensive photo-aging in the environment, and the aged plastics exhibit different surface properties from pristine ones. Here, we investigate the surface properties of a nano-TiO₂ coated polyethylene (PE) film as influenced by photocatalytic aging process using an atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) technique. Results showed that the height range of the as-prepared samples was about 30 nm, and the equivalent diameter of nano-TiO₂ was ~70 nm. The photo-induced oxidation of the CH₂ bond occurred on the surface of the PE film. Photo-aging mainly affected the thermal properties of PE film in a local area, especially affecting the components surrounding the nano-TiO₂ particle. The glass transition temperature of unaged PE film mainly changed in the range of 93.9-96.5 °C, but after aging the temperature gradually increased with the distance to nano-TiO₂ increasing from near to far. The plastic film surrounding the nano-TiO₂ particle became stiffer after photo-aging, and the photocatalytic reaction had an effect on the stiffness of the film material. The second characteristic peaks with resonance deviations (i.e., 110, 112, and 115 kHz) were used for Lorentz contact resonance (LCR) measurements. The mechanical properties of PE film after photo-aging were closely related to the distance between nano-TiO₂ and film surface. These research findings are conducive for us to understand better the photo-induced aging process of functional plastic film.
