Abstract
The current study utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy to examine the neural mechanisms underlying the effect of referential and emotional information on novel word learning. After learning the meaning of novel words in different sentences, participants were asked to complete a semantic consistency judgment task and a source judgment task. The behavioral data and neural data were recorded simultaneously. The results showed that: (1) referential information affected the novel word learning; (2) the interaction between referential and emotional information was significant; (3) these effects were associated with neural activities in the frontal and temporal lobe, mainly in the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the inferior frontal gyrus, the middle temporal gyrus, the superior temporal gyrus, and the premotor and supplementary motor cortex. The findings suggested that self-referential information could promote the novel word learning. Notably, referential and emotional information jointly affected the novel word learning in the frontal and temporal lobe, indicating the integrative contributions of both referential and emotional information to novel word learning.

Abstract
While discrimination based on race, gender, and other factors is well-documented, the discrimination faced by left-handed individuals is often overlooked. To address this gap, a study developed the Perceived Handism Discrimination Scale (PHDS) to assess how left-handed people perceive discrimination related to their hand preference. The original questionnaire consisted of 20 items using a 7-point Likert scale and was evaluated by experts using Lawshe's methodology. After refinement, the scale was reduced to 12 items, and further analysis through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with two separate samples (n=200 each) led to a final scale of 10 items clustered around two significant factors: cultural and individual dimensions of perceived handism discrimination. The PHDS demonstrated good psychometric properties, including reliability and statistical significance in factor analyses. However, the fit of the assumptions underlying EFA and CFA was not ideal, suggesting that further refinement is needed. Despite this, the PHDS represents a valuable tool for identifying perceived handism discrimination, ultimately aiming to inform policies that mitigate its effects in society.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to characterize dysfunctional cerebral activation in patients with schizophrenia while they performed a response inhibition task. To achieve this, performance on the task and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were compared between healthy control subjects (HC) and patients with schizophrenia (SZ). We focused on the default mode network (DMN), as there is strong evidence in the literature that lack of DMN suppression in schizophrenia is associated with cognitive impairment including poor response inhibition. fMRI was used to measure blood-oxygen-level-dependent activation in 84 subjects (44 SZ and 40 HC) while they performed a Go NoGo task. The subjects were also evaluated for psychiatric symptoms and immediate visual memory. SZ performed more poorly than HC on the task; they had a higher number of commission errors. On the fMRI, the patients consistently evidenced higher activation than the controls in several areas of the default mode network (DMN) including the precuneus, rostral anterior cingulate, parahippocampus and insula. The higher brain activation in the patients with schizophrenia indicates a failure to deactivate the DMN while they perform the response inhibition task. These findings point to the importance of DMN dysfunction as an underlying cause of impairment in response inhibition in schizophrenia. DMN disruptions play an essential role in the cognitive impairment present in schizophrenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) is a frequently used psychometric tool to evaluate the dental anxiety level of dental patients or the general population. However, it was largely unclear if MDAS was consistently administered in the original format in the academic literature. This work aimed to survey the literature published in the last 10 years to reveal the current usage of MDAS. METHODS Web of Science and Scopus were queried to identify papers that mentioned the use of MDAS. RESULTS Among a total of 260 analyzed papers, 101 papers included comprehensive information regarding both the questions posed and the response format employed. Two papers only used an explicitly renamed MDAS with modified contents. Among the 258 papers that used MDAS that were supposed to be standardized, many discrepancies from the original version were discovered. There were only 39 papers that strictly followed the recommended scoring scheme: if a participant had a score of ≥ 19, he or she might be highly dentally anxious. Notable modifications included the use of a cut-off score different from the original recommendation, the use of multiple cut-off scores, modifications of the response format or descriptors, and modifications to the question items especially adding extra questions. CONCLUSIONS These modifications would create confusion when researchers and clinicians tried to compare data across studies. Researchers are recommended to administer MDAS in its original format.

Abstract
Individuals who vary their preferred hand when performing different types of manual activities, so-called mixed handers (MH), have been frequently reported to outperform individuals with a consistent (right) hand preference (cRH) on tasks assessing declarative-memory functions. For example, in one influential study, this MH advantage extended to incidental learning from presumed "deep" semantic processing of verbal stimuli but not from "shallow" phonemic or structural processing. In the present study, we aimed to replicate this research finding in two separate participant samples. First, in a pre-registered and sample-size planned experiment we confronted 49 participants (23 MH; 26 cRH) with "phonemic" and "semantic" word evaluation tasks (using a within design), followed by a surprise delayed recognition test. In a second experiment, we repeated the same procedure with 65 other participants (31 MH, 34 cRH). A mixed-effect analyses of variance found a significant main effect of Encoding Condition (phonemic vs. semantic tasks) in both experiments (effect size: ηp2 = .81 to .85), indicating the classical level-of processing effect with higher recognition hits and sensitivity (d') for words that followed semantic versus phonemic encoding. However, the predicted interaction effect of Encoding Condition with Handedness Group was not statistically significant for either sample (all ηp2 < .03), nor was the main effect of Handedness Group. Thus, our findings conflicted with those of the original study in two independent samples. As we had sufficient statistical power to be confident in our failure to detect a genuine group difference, we cannot confirm the previously reported MH over cRH advantage in incidental learning of verbal material. We discuss possible reasons for these contradictory results and the theoretical implications of this discovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The human brain displays structural and functional disparities between its hemispheres, with such asymmetry extending to the frontal aslant tract. This plays a role in a variety of cognitive functions, including speech production, language processing, and executive functions. However, the factors influencing the laterality of the frontal aslant tract remain incompletely understood. Handedness is hypothesized to impact frontal aslant tract laterality, given its involvement in both language and motor control. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between handedness and frontal aslant tract lateralization, providing insight into this aspect of brain organization. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Automated Tractography Pipeline was used to generate the frontal aslant tract for both right and left hemispheres in a cohort of 720 subjects sourced from the publicly available Human Connectome Project in Aging database. Subsequently, macrostructural and microstructural parameters of the right and left frontal aslant tract were extracted for each individual in the study population. The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory scores were used for the classification of handedness, and a comparative analysis across various handedness groups was performed. RESULTS An age-related decline in both macrostructural parameters and microstructural integrity was noted within the studied population. The frontal aslant tract demonstrated a greater volume and larger diameter in male subjects compared with female participants. Additionally, a left-side laterality of the frontal aslant tract was observed within the general population. In the right-handed group, the volume (P < .001), length (P < .001), and diameter (P = .004) of the left frontal aslant tract were found to be higher than those of the right frontal aslant tract. Conversely, in the left-handed group, the volume (P = .040) and diameter (P = .032) of the left frontal aslant tract were lower than those of the right frontal aslant tract. Furthermore, in the right-handed group, the volume and diameter of the frontal aslant tract showed left-sided lateralization, while in the left-handed group, a right-sided lateralization was evident. CONCLUSIONS The laterality of the frontal aslant tract appears to differ with handedness. This finding highlights the complex interaction between brain lateralization and handedness, emphasizing the importance of considering handedness as a factor in evaluating brain structure and function.

Abstract
Background: Hand laterality has an impact on surgical gestures. In this study, we sought to measure the multi-parameter variability of the microsurgical gesture depending on the hand used and the differences between expert microsurgeons and novices. Methods: Ten experienced microsurgeons and twenty medical students with no prior microsurgical experience performed arterial anastomosis on a chicken wing artery using dominant and non-dominant hands. We measured time and force using a homemade force-sensing microsurgical needle holder, heart rate variability with a Polar H10 chest strap, anxiety with the STAI-Y questionnaire and anastomosis quality using the MARS 10 scale. Results: In the microsurgeons' group, duration of anastomosis (p = 0.037), force applied to the needle holder (p = 0.047), anxiety (p = 0.05) and MARS10 (p = 0.291) were better with the dominant hand. For novices, there was no difference between the dominant and non-dominant hand pertaining to force, time and stress level. There were no differences between microsurgeons and novices pertaining to force and anxiety using the non-dominant hand. Conclusions: The study highlighted a marked laterality among microsurgical experts, a finding that may be explained by current learning methods. Surprisingly, no laterality is observed in students, suggesting that for a specific gesture completely different from everyday tasks, laterality is not predefined. Ambidexterity training in the residency curriculum seems relevant and may help microsurgeons improve performance and postoperative outcomes.

Abstract
An increased prevalence of mixed-handedness has been reported in several neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, there is high between-study variability in the definition of mixed-handedness, leading to a major methodological problem in clinical laterality research and endangering replicability and comparability of research findings. Adding to this challenge is the fact that sometimes researchers use the concepts of mixed-handedness and ambidexterity interchangeably. Therefore, having a consensus on how to determine mixed-handedness and how to distinguish it from ambidexterity is crucial for clinical laterality research. To this end, hand preference and hand performance data from more than 600 participants from the Dortmund Vital Study (Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05155397), a population-based study in Germany, was analyzed to ascertain an optimal classification to determine mixed-handedness and ambidexterity. Using a combination of latent class analyses, effect size determination, and comparisons with the existing literature, we establish that an LQ cut-off criterion of +/-60 for mixed-handedness is optimal for future clinical laterality studies. Moreover, we show that mixed-handedness and ambidexterity are not identical and that the terms should not be used interchangeably. We further highlight the need for a consensus on how to mathematically determine ambidexterity as results of existing categorization schemes largely differ.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05155397; https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT05155397.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD) represents a significant and pressing global public health concern, with far-reaching and deleterious consequences for individuals, communities, and healthcare systems. The craving caused by smoking cue is an important trigger for relapse, fundamentally hindering the cessation of cigarette smoking. Mindfulness interventions focusing on cue-reactivity was effective for the treatment of related dependence. Brief mindfulness training (BMT) meets the short-term needs for intervention but the effects still need to be examined. The objective of the present study is to investigate the impact of BMT intervention on smoking cue-reactivity among Chinese college students with TUD, to uncover the dynamic models of brain function involved in this process. METHOD A randomized control trial (RCT) based on electroencephalography (EEG) was designed. We aim to recruit 90 participants and randomly assign to the BMT and control group (CON) with 1:1 ratio. A brief mindfulness training will be administered to experimental group. After the intervention, data collection will be conducted in the follow-up stage with 5 timepoints of assessments. EEG data will be recorded during the smoking cue-reactivity task and 'STOP' brief mindfulness task. The primary outcomes include subjective reports of smoking craving, changes in EEG indicators, and mindfulness measures. The secondary outcomes will be daily smoking behaviours, affect and impulsivity, as well as indicators reflecting correlation between mindfulness and smoking cue-reactivity. To evaluate the impact of mindfulness training, a series of linear mixed-effects models will be employed. Specifically, within-group effects will be examined by analysing the longitudinal data. Additionally, the effect size for all statistical measurements will be reported, offering a comprehensive view of the observed effects. DISCUSSION The current study aims to assess the impact of brief mindfulness-based intervention on smoking cue-reactivity in TUD. It also expected to enhance our understanding of the underlying processes involved in brain function and explore potential EEG biomarkers at multiple time points. Abstract
Lateralization is a key aspect of brain architecture and handedness is its primary manifestation. The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) and the laterality quotient (LQ) assess the direction and consistency of handedness and require translation and cross-cultural adaptation to guarantee construct validity. We developed a standardized Italian EHI version. The developed Italian version was tested on 202 Italian subjects, classified into three hand types based on their LQs: right, mixed, and left. The frequency of left-handedness in Italians and other populations was compared to previous data. LQs from the twenty- and the ten-item original inventories were also compared. We conducted a factorial analysis. Mcdonald's Omega tested internal consistency. The prevalence of left-handedness was 6.4%, consistent with prior findings in Italian samples and other EHI translations. Age was the only socio-demographic variable that significantly affected the LQ. The internal consistency of the Italian EHI was excellent. Handedness is a feature of several cognitive functions and some neuropsychological diseases; it is influenced by socio-demographic and cultural factors and the instrument used to assess it. To provide a consistent and comparable evaluation of the construct, we recommend using this validated Italian translation of the EHI.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the electroencephalographic profile of elite and non-elite basketball players seconds before and during the basketball free throw. Sixteen male subjects in the elite group (national team/premier league players with an average age of 22.06 ± 1.56) and 16 male non-elite subjects (university players with an average age of 22.37 ± 1.45) voluntarily participated in this research. Electroencephalographic data were measured from 28 cortical areas using a mobile wireless device. ANOVA with repeated measures were also performed to investigate the characteristics of theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands. The findings showed the higher cortical activity of the elite group. Different frequency bands exhibited similar asymmetry patterns, suggesting the higher activity of the left hemisphere in most of the homologous sites. Moreover, the activity of frequency bands in the left hemisphere rose by approaching the moment of throw. Furthermore, the activity of a limited number of right hemisphere sites increased by getting closer to the moment of action. In general, hemispheric asymmetry in favor of the left hemisphere has a cortical pattern, reflecting high-performance activities. In addition, the characteristics of different frequency bands of hemispheres are directed toward increasing cognitive processing, attention focusing, and inhibiting irrelevant information.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is often seen as a bridge between schizophrenia and depression in terms of symptomatology and etiology. Interestingly, hemispheric asymmetries as well as behavioral lateralization are shifted towards a tendency of left-side or mixed-side bias in schizophrenia whereas no shift is observed in subjects with depression. Given the role of BD with both, (hypo)manic and depressive episodes, investigating hemispheric asymmetries in subjects with BD is an interesting objective. METHOD A systematic review of studies including measures of behavioral lateralization in the form of handedness, footedness, eyedness, and language lateralization was performed resulting in 25 suitable studies. RESULTS A broad variety of methods was used to assess behavioral lateralization, especially for eyedness, footedness, and language lateralization hindering the integration of results. Additionally, for hand preference, studies frequently used different cut-off scores and classification systems. Overall, studies do not support alteration in side preference in BD subjects. Studies focusing on differences in handedness demonstrate that subjects show equal rates of right- and non-right-handedness as the general population. Few studies focusing on manic episodes point towards increased left-side bias in ear and eye dominance, but the small sample sizes and conflicting results warrant further investigation. CONCLUSION The results reinforce that some disorders, such as BD, should not be treated as a homogenous group but sub-groups should be analyzed within the patient's population. Particularly, clinical implications resulting from neuroimaging studies highlight the need to study hemispheric asymmetries given that they may be important to consider for brain stimulation protocols.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study describes the educational experiences of left-handed (LH) surgeons and provides recommendations for educating LH trainees, who face challenges due to their handedness. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS A mixed methods analysis was performed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with LH trainees, LH attendings, and right-handed (RH) attendings representing 4 hospitals within a large academic hospital system. Questions were curated from current literature to explore the educational experiences of LH trainees. Inductive and iterative coding techniques were employed to manually generate themes. Laterality questionnaires for skills in daily life and surgery were collected and analyzed. RESULTS Laterality questionnaires demonstrate that LH trainees and surgeons are more mixed-handed and use their nondominant hand to a greater extent in surgery compared to daily life than RH attendings. Key themes were identified in the dimension of learning, including that initial decisions for which hand to use remain fixed throughout career, LH learning is largely self-directed, forced conformation to RH norms and microaggressions are common, LH instruments are rarely practical, and LH surgeons are advantaged with situational ambidexterity. Key themes related to teaching include that communication regarding handedness is lacking, RH surgeons are often unaware of/resistant to a LH approach, the onus is on the trainee to suggest accommodations to use their left hand, and attendings rarely effectively mentor LH learners in using their left hand. CONCLUSIONS Left-handed surgeons face challenges in an environment designed for RH individuals, represented by themes regarding learning and teaching experiences of LH surgeons told by themselves and their teachers. Recommendations were created for LH trainees in learning, all attendings in teaching, LH attendings in their opportunity to mentor, and surgical societies in supporting LH trainees. Development of resources for LH trainees could fill a substantial gap. Exploration of how LH surgeons evolve situational ambidexterity could benefit all surgeons.

Abstract
Motor imagery based brain-computer interfaces (MI-BCIs) have excellent application prospects in motor enhancement and rehabilitation. However, MI-induced electroencephalogram features applied to MI-BCI usually vary from person to person. This study aimed to investigate whether the motor ability of the individual upper limbs was associated with these features, which helps understand the causes of inter-subject variability. We focused on the behavioral and psychological factors reflecting motor abilities. We first obtained the behavioral scale scores from Edinburgh Handedness Questionnaire, Maximum Grip Strength Test, and Purdue Pegboard Test assessments to evaluate the motor execution ability. We also required the subjects to complete the psychological Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3 estimate, representing MI ability. Then we recorded EEG signals from all twenty-two subjects during MI tasks. Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise regression were used to analyze the relationships between MI-induced relative event-related desynchronization (rERD) patterns and motor abilities. Both Purdue Pegboard Test and Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3 scores had significant correlations with MI-induced neural oscillation patterns. Notably, the Purdue Pegboard Test of the left hand had the most significant correlation with the alpha rERD. The results of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the Purdue Pegboard Test and Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3 could best predict the MI-induced rERD. The results demonstrate that hand dexterity and fine motor coordination are significantly related to MI-induced neural activities. In addition, the method of imagining is also relevant to MI features. Therefore, this study is meaningful for understanding individual differences and the design of user-centered MI-BCI.

Abstract
Hand preference is one of the behavioral expressions of lateralization in the brain. Previous fMRI studies showed the activation in several regions including the motor cortex and the cerebellum during single-hand movement. However, functional connectivity related to hand preference has not been investigated. Here, we used the generalized psychophysiological interaction (gPPI) approach to investigate the alteration of functional connectivity during single-hand movement from the resting state in right-hand subjects. The functional connectivity in interhemispheric motor-related regions including the supplementary motor area, the precentral gyrus, and the cerebellum was significantly increased during non-dominant hand movement, while functional connectivity was not increased during dominant hand movement. The general linear model (GLM) showed activation in contralateral supplementary motor area, contralateral precentral gyrus, and ipsilateral cerebellum during right- or left-hand movement. These results indicate that a combination of GLM and gPPI analysis can detect the lateralization of hand preference more clearly.

Abstract
There is contradictory evidence on the influence of handedness on depression and anxiety. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between handedness and rumination, which is robustly associated with both depression and anxiety. This study aimed to examine the influence of direction and consistency of handedness on rumination, considering four different classifications of handedness. The study sample included 406 participants (282 females) who attended an online survey and answered a demographic questionnaire, the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory, the Ruminative Response Scale, and the second edition of the Beck Depression Inventory. Considering four different classifications of handedness, a series of one-way ANOVAs was conducted to investigate any differences between the handedness groups. Besides, linear regression models were used to predict depression or rumination scores among the whole study sample, left-handers, and right-handers. Consistency of handedness predicted rumination among right-handers (but not left-handers), with a direct association between consistency and brooding/total rumination scores. Also, consistent left-handers and consistent right-handers showed higher brooding scores than inconsistent right-handers. Overall, the results supported the significant influence of both direction and consistency of handedness on individual differences in rumination and suggested consistent- and left-handedness as perpetuating factors for ruminative response style.

Abstract
ABSTRACTStress exposure and reactivity may show differential associations with handedness, but shallow phenotyping may influence the current knowledge. Importantly, different handedness measures do not necessarily show high correlations with each other and should not be used interchangeably as they may reflect different dimensions of laterality. Here, data on handedness from 599 participants in the population-based, longitudinal Dortmund Vital Study was used to determine various asymmetry indices. Hand preference was assessed with the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) and the lateral preference inventory (LPI) measuring handedness, footedness, earedness, and eyedness. Hand performance was determined using the pegboard test. In addition, data on several dimensions of stress exposure and reactivity, including hair cortisol, and mental well-being was analysed to determine associations with handedness. All handedness measures correlated significantly with each other, with the strongest correlation between the EHI and the LPI handedness score. The EHI and LPI hand measures resulted in the highest effect sizes and most consistent correlations with stress or mental well-being. In contrast, the pegboard test only showed very little association with the stress and mental well-being measures. This highlights the importance of handedness phenotyping. Including preference measures is recommended to disentangle the link between handedness and mental health.

Abstract
Research has demonstrated that performing a sequence of saccadic horizontal eye movements prior to retrieval facilitates performance on tests of episodic memory. This has been observed in both laboratory tasks of retention and autobiographical memory. To date, the work has centred on performance in younger individuals. This paper extends previous investigations by examining the effects of saccadic eye movements in older persons. Autobiographical episodic and semantic memory fluency was assessed in younger (age range 18-35, mean = 22.50), and older (age range 55-87, mean = 70.35) participants following saccadic (vs. fixation control) manipulations. The main effects of eye movements and age were found for episodic autobiographical memory (greater fluency after eye movements and in younger participants). Semantic autobiographical memory showed a main effect of age (greater fluency in younger participants), whereas general semantic memory showed no effect of age or eye movement. These findings indicate that saccadic horizontal eye movements can enhance episodic personal memory in older individuals. This has implications as a technique to improve autobiographical recollection in the elderly and as an adjunct in reminiscence therapy.

Abstract
Genetics are undoubtedly implicated in the ontogenesis of laterality. Nonetheless, environmental factors, such as the intrauterine environment, may also play a role in the development of functional and behavioral lateralization. The aim of this study was to test the Left-Otolithic Dominance Theory (LODT; Previc, 1991) by investigating a hypothetical developmental pattern where it is assumed that a breech presentation, which is putatively associated with a dysfunctional and weakly lateralized vestibular system, can lead to weak handedness and atypical development associated with language and motor difficulties. We used the ALSPAC cohort of children from 7 to 10 years of age to conduct our investigation. Our results failed to show an association between the vestibular system and fetal presentation, nor any influence of the latter on hand preference, hand performance, or language and motor development. Bayesian statistical analyses supported these findings. Contrary to our LODT-derived hypotheses, this study offers evidence that fetal presentation does not influence the vestibular system's lateralization and seems to be a poor indicator for handedness. This proof-of-concept study explores the potential of developing objective pain identification based on the analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Data were collected from participants living with chronic fibromyalgia pain (n = 4) and from healthy volunteers (n = 7) submitted to experimental pain by the application of capsaicin cream (1%) on the right upper trapezius. This data collection was conducted in two parts: (1) baseline measures including pain intensity and EEG signals, with the participant at rest; (2) active measures collected under the execution of a visuo-motor task, including EEG signals and the task performance index. The main measure for the objective identification of the presence of pain was the coefficient of variation of the upper envelope (CVUE) of the EEG signal from left fronto-central (FC5) and left temporal (T7) electrodes, in alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (12-30 Hz) and gamma (30-43 Hz) frequency bands. The task performance index was also calculated. CVUE (%) was compared between groups: those with chronic fibromyalgia pain, healthy volunteers with "No pain" and healthy volunteers with experimentally-induced pain. The identification of the presence of pain was determined by an increased CVUE in beta (CVUEβ) from the EEG signals captured at the left FC5 electrode. More specifically, CVUEβ increased up to 20% in the pain condition at rest. In addition, no correlation was found between CVUEβ and pain intensity or the task performance index. These results support the objective identification of the presence of pain based on the quantification of the coefficient of variation of the upper envelope of the EEG signal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditional repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) remains applicable in speech studies on healthy participants. Although the procedure of inducing speech arrest by rTMS has been used for over 25 years, there are still significant discrepancies in its methodology. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to simplify and improve the old methodology of triggering speech arrest by (rTMS). Our goal was to establish the best step-by-step algorithm and verify the procedure on a representative group of participants. METHODS 47 healthy, right-handed volunteers (23 men and 24 women) at a median age of 23 (range 19-34) were included in the study. Handedness was determined using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory Test. After setting the individual's motor threshold (MT) and heuristic choice of the place of stimulation, which targeted Inferior Frontal Gyrus (IFG), participants were asked to count downwards from 20 to 10. While counting, a series of 2-second pulses was generated at a frequency of 2 Hz at 120% or 150% of MT. The procedure was video-recorded and subsequently assessed by 3 independent reviewers and self-assessed by participants on visual analogue scales for the effect and comfort of stimulation. RESULTS Speech arrest was induced in 45 people (95.7%). Language dominance was determined to be either left-sided (for 42.2%) or bilateral (55.3%). Total speech arrest was observed more often in participants for whom Broca's area was active exclusively in the left hemisphere. CONCLUSION In our study, we present the step-by-step procedure for a simplified, as far as possible, methodology of inducing speech arrest using rTMS with its verification on a representative group of right-handed healthy individuals. Our results prove that the chosen stimulation parameters present a good efficacy ratio and seems to be justified. The traditional applications of rTMS in speech studies may be highly broadened if the methods used are further improved and simplified.

Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) technology has increased clinical attention in the health care of schizophrenia spectrum disorders in both diagnoses of the symptoms and assessment of schizotypal traits. However, the exact nature of VR-induced positive treatment effect in schizotypy is still unknown. In this study, VR technology was used as a non-invasive neurocognitive trigger to test the asymmetric visuospatial representational instability found in individuals with high schizotypy. The study aimed to reveal the brain functional hemispheric laterality in physical and virtual realities in individuals with schizotypal traits. Fifty-one healthy, right-handed participants (24 males and 27 females) were enrolled through public advertisements. Hemispheric functional asymmetry was measured by the Line Bisection Task (LBT). The results revealed that (a) LBT bias in the physical reality showed a handedness-related leftward pseudoneglect, however, similar handedness-related pseudoneglect in VR has not been found. (b) Comparing LBT bias in physically real and VR environments showed rightward drift in VR environments independently to the degree of handedness. (c) The schizotypy has no association with handedness, however, the cognitive schizotypy is related to the LBT bias. Higher cognitive schizotypy in VR associated with left hemispatial pseudoneglect. In conclusion, schizotypy is associated with ambiguous behavioral and cognitive functional laterality. In individuals with high cognitive schizotypy, the VR environment enhanced the representational articulation of the left hemispace. This effect may be originated from the enhancement of the right hemisphere overactivation and is followed by a lower mental control of the overt behavior.

Abstract
Handedness influences differences in lateralization of language areas as well as dominance of motor and somatosensory cortices. However, differences in whole-brain functional connectivity (i.e., functional connectomes) due to handedness have been relatively understudied beyond pre-specified networks of interest. Here, we compared functional connectomes of left- and right-handed individuals at the whole brain level. We explored differences in functional connectivity of previously established regions of interest, and showed differences between primarily left- and primarily right-handed individuals in the motor, somatosensory, and language areas using functional connectivity. We then proceeded to investigate these differences in the whole brain and found that the functional connectivity of left- and right-handed individuals are not specific to networks of interest, but extend across every region of the brain. In particular, we found that connections between and within the cerebellum show distinct patterns of connectivity. To put these effects into context, we show that the effect sizes associated with handedness differences account for a similar amount of individual differences in the connectome as sex differences. Together these results shed light on regions of the brain beyond those traditionally explored that contribute to differences in the functional organization of left- and right-handed individuals and underscore that handedness effects are neurobiologically meaningful in addition to being statistically significant.

Abstract
Handedness is part of our everyday lives, but where does it come from? Researchers studying nonhuman primates and young children have approached this question from different perspectives—evolutionary and developmental, respectively. Their work converges on the conclusion that measurement matters in the science of handedness. Coming to a consensus on assessment will guide future research into the origins of handedness. A candidate behavior for promoting multidisciplinary comparison is role-differentiated bimanual manipulation.

Abstract
ABSTRACTBecause self-report hand preference measures are limited to investigating cognitive aspects of manual laterality, valid, easy-to-administer and economic behavioural methods are needed for capturing the motoric component of handedness. Therefore, this study introduces the Handedness Index Practical Task (HI20) and tests it in a sample of 206 students (Mage = 23.79 years, SDage = 3.01 years), half of whom were self-specified left-handers. After confirming good reliabilities at the subscale and total scale levels, k-means cluster analysis allowed an empirically based partitioning of test subjects into left- (n = 72), mixed- (n = 23) and right-handers (n = 111). To validate this categorization and the HI20 index, data were compared with the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI), EHI-short, HI22 and hand grip strength. The congruency between the HI20 clusters and alternative categorizations ranged from 95.6% to 84.0%, while the clusters explained large portions of variance in grip strength differences. The HI20 sub- and total scores showed strong correlations with other measures of lateral preference. Altogether, the freely available HI20 emerges as a reliable and valid alternative for behavioural handedness assessment, whose power lies in explaining differential hand use patterns and enabling fine-grained examinations of handedness.

Abstract
Psychopathy has historically been conceptualized as a mental disorder, but there is growing evidence that it may instead be an alternative, adaptive life history strategy designed by natural selection. Although the etiology of mental disorders is not fully understood, one likely contributor is perturbations affecting neurodevelopment. Nonright-handedness is a sign of such perturbations, and therefore can be used to test these competing models. If psychopathy is a mental disorder, psychopaths should show elevated rates of nonright-handedness. However, an adaptive strategy perspective expects psychopaths to be neurologically healthy and therefore predicts typical rates of nonright-handedness. We meta-analyzed 16 studies that investigated the association between psychopathy and handedness in various populations. There was no difference in the rates of nonright-handedness between community participants high and low in psychopathy. Furthermore, there was no difference between psychopathic and nonpsychopathic offenders in rates of nonright-handedness, though there was a tendency for offenders scoring higher on the Interpersonal/Affective dimension of psychopathy to have lower rates of nonright-handedness, and for offenders scoring higher on the Behavioral dimension of psychopathy to have higher rates of nonright-handedness. Lastly, there was no difference in rates of nonright-handedness between psychopathic and nonpsychopathic mental health patients. Thus, our results fail to support the mental disorder model and partly support the adaptive strategy model. We discuss limitations of the meta-analysis and implications for theories of the origins of psychopathy.

Abstract
Subject handedness is an important parameter to be evaluated and accounted for in neuroscience studies dealing with laterality. The aim of this study was to survey for the details of how researchers administered the Edinburgh handedness inventory (EHI) to assess subject handedness. Web of Science and PubMed databases was searched on 3 August 2021 to identify functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) articles published since 2013 using the EHI or citing Oldfield, the original paper that introduced the EHI. Articles not actually using the EHI and/or its variants were excluded. Two reviewers performed the screening independently and disagreements were solved by mutual consensus. Most of the 406 studies using the EHI did not report details regarding the number of items (94.1%), identity of items (96.1%), response format (97.0%), and cutoff score for right-handedness (87.2%). Items were found dropped or replaced, with response format and cutoff score changed without citing references that justified the modifications. A clearer reporting of the details of the EHI as an assessment tool for determining subject handedness should be encouraged.

Abstract
The relationship between handedness, laterality, and inhibitory control is a valuable benchmark for testing the hypothesis of the right-hemispheric specialization of inhibition. According to this theory, and given that to stop a limb movement, it is sufficient to alter the activity of the contralateral hemisphere, then suppressing a left arm movement should be faster than suppressing a right-arm movement. This is because, in the latter case, inhibitory commands produced in the right hemisphere should be sent to the other hemisphere. Further, as lateralization of cognitive functions in left-handers is less pronounced than in right-handers, in the former, the inhibitory control should rely on both hemispheres. We tested these predictions on a medium-large sample of left- and right-handers (n = 52). Each participant completed two sessions of the reaching versions of the stop-signal task, one using the right arm and one using the left arm. We found that reactive and proactive inhibition do not differ according to handedness. However, we found a significant advantage of the right versus the left arm in canceling movements outright. By contrast, there were no differences in proactive inhibition. As we also found that participants performed movements faster with the right than with the left arm, we interpret our results in light of the dominant role of the left hemisphere in some aspects of motor control.

Abstract
Lateral preference is a widespread organizational principle in human and nonhuman animals. In humans, the most apparent lateralized trait (handedness) is unique in the animal kingdom because of a very pronounced bias towards right-handedness on a population level. In this study, based on previous experiments, we test the hypothesis that this bias was-among other factors-shaped by evolution through the facilitation of social learning. We exposed 134 subjects to footage of right- or left-handed knot making and analyzed whether concordant handedness between instructor and student facilitated quicker and more successful imitation. We used a set of nautical knots of different difficulty levels in order to test whether the potential effect of concordance became stronger with increasing knot difficulty. For all three performance measures (time until correct completion, number of attempts needed and correct imitation), we found hand congruency and difficulty level to be significant predictors but not the interaction of the two. We conclude that concordance of handedness between teacher and student of a motor skill enhances the speed and accuracy of imitation, which may have been a beneficial trait for selection to act upon, thereby shaping the human population bias in handedness.

Abstract
Handedness has long been tied to personality, but detailed explanations for the association are lacking. Importantly for purposes of theory development, measures of approach and withdrawal associated with Big Five personality traits have also been traced back to activity in brain areas that relate to handedness. Specifically, increased right-hemisphere frontal activity appears to be linked to both withdrawal motivation and left/inconsistent-handedness, while increased left-hemisphere frontal activity is associated with approach motivation and right/consistent-handedness. Cerebral motivational asymmetries therefore present one plausible mechanism by which approach and withdrawal motivation could mediate the relationship between handedness and personality. We tested this possibility in a large online study (N = 499) in which participants completed multiple survey measures. Results indicated that approach/withdrawal motivation partially accounts for relationships between handedness and personality.

Abstract
The experience of owning a body is built upon the integration of exteroceptive, interoceptive, and proprioceptive signals. Recently, it has been suggested that motor signals could be particularly important in producing the feeling of body part ownership. One thus may hypothesize that the strength of this feeling may not be spatially uniform; rather, it could vary as a function of the degree by which different body parts are involved in motor behavior. Given that our dominant hand plays a leading role in our motor behavior, we hypothesized that it could be more strongly associated with one’s self compared to its non-dominant counterpart. To explore whether this possible asymmetry manifests as a stronger implicit association of the right hand (vs left hand) with the self, we administered the Implicit Association Test to a group of 70 healthy individuals. To control whether this asymmetric association is human-body specific, we further tested whether a similar asymmetry characterizes the association between a right (vs left) animal body part with the concept of self, in an independent sample of subjects (N = 70, 140 subjects total). Our results revealed a linear relationship between the magnitude of the implicit association between the right hand with the self and the subject’s handedness. In detail, the strength of this association increased as a function of hand preference. Critically, the handedness score did not predict the association of the right-animal body part with the self. These findings suggest that, in healthy individuals, the dominant and non-dominant hands are differently perceived at an implicit level as belonging to the self. We argue that such asymmetry may stem from the different roles that the two hands play in our adaptive motor behavior.

Abstract
The author presents his perspective on the character of science, development, and handedness and relates these to his investigations of the early development of handedness. After presenting some ideas on what hemispheric specialization of function might mean for neural processing and how handedness should be assessed, the neuroscience of control of the arms/hands and interhemispheric communication and coordination are examined for how developmental processes can affect these mechanisms. The author’s work on the development of early handedness is reviewed and placed within a context of cascading events in which different forms of handedness emerge from earlier forms but not in a deterministic manner. This approach supports a continuous rather than categorical distribution of handedness and accounts for the predominance of right-handedness while maintaining a minority of left-handedness. Finally, the relation of the development of handedness to the development of several language and cognitive skills is examined.

Abstract
PURPOSE Handedness has been strongly linked to cerebral lateralisation for language. Literature on atypical handedness and its association with focal epilepsy starting from early childhood is limited and needs exploration. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, the prevalence of atypical handedness (left-handedness and ambidexterity) was compared between children with left/right focal epilepsy aged 3-14 years without any definite motor deficit, between August 2019 and July 2020. Cognition, behavioral abnormalities, working memory, and executive function were also compared between the groups. Various clinical, demographic, and radiological variables were explored to determine any association with the presence of atypical handedness. RESULTS Of the total 79 children (45 boys, 57 % mean age 6.5 ± 2.3 years, 41-left focal epilepsy) with focal epilepsy enrolled for the study, the prevalence of atypical handedness was found to be 12.6 % (10/79). No association between atypical handedness and clinical/demographic variables including left/right focal epilepsy was observed in the study excepting neuroimaging abnormality (p = 0.0008 and 0.02 respectively). This increased prevalence of neuroimaging abnormality in patients with atypical handedness was significant in multivariate analysis, after adjusting for confounding variables. Similarly, intelligence quotient (full scale, verbal and non-verbal, as well as sub-domains), behavioral abnormality (internalizing and externalizing score on CBCL), scores on picture memory, simple copying, and missing scan task were not significantly different between children with left and right focal epilepsy or children with atypical handedness and right-handedness. CONCLUSION Atypical handedness is not more frequent in children with left focal epilepsy as compared to right focal epilepsy.

Abstract
Competing theories have posited roles for foetal androgen exposure in the development of human handedness. However, due to practical and ethical considerations, few studies have used hormonal measures to examine this possibility. The current paper reviews this literature and reveals a generally inconsistent pattern of results. We also present data from a longitudinal study of prenatal sex hormone exposure and subsequent handedness. More specifically, we examine correlations between testosterone and estradiol measured from second trimester amniotic fluid and hand preference (Dutch language version of the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory) and hand skill asymmetry (pegboard task) measured at 15 years of age. Prenatal sex hormone exposure was not associated with the direction of hand preference in either males or females. However, in females, high levels of prenatal testosterone were associated with weaker lateralisation of hand skill, and high levels of prenatal estradiol were associated with weaker hand preference. In addition, high levels of prenatal testosterone were associated with increased task duration (i.e., slow hand speed) for the right and left hands of males. The pattern of results observed here is not entirely consistent with any of the main theories linking sex hormones with handedness, suggesting that an association between these variables may be more complex than initially thought.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Acupuncture is used as an alternative treatment for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The associated therapeutic effect of acupuncture is often attributed to its modulatory effect on the activity of the pre-frontal cortex (PFC), although the mechanism is not well-studied. We employed a repeated measures design to investigate the brain modulatory effect of acupuncture on the PFC in a group of patients with MDD and investigated whether the modulatory effect is influenced by the severity of the disease. Methods: A total of 47 patients diagnosed with MDD were enrolled in this functional near-infrared spectroscopy experiment. The severity of depressive symptoms was measured at baseline using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-24 (HAMD). The cortical activation in the bilateral PFC areas during a verbal fluency task (VFT) was measured before and after a single session of acupuncture in the Baihui acupoint. We further explored the potential correlation between the severity of MDD and task-related activation before and after acupuncture. Results: A single session of acupuncture significantly tended to enhance the activation level of the left frontopolar cortex in patients with severe depression during VFT, but a null effect was found in those with mild to moderate depression. Among patients with severe depression, a strong correlation was observed between HAMD scores and the change in VFT-related activation after acupuncture in the left dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC). Conclusion: A single session of acupuncture did not significantly modulate the activation of the left PFC in patients with mild to moderate depression; however, it demonstrated a tendency to enhance the activation of the frontopolar area in patients with severe depression. Among patients with severe depression, there is a correlation between the activation by acupuncture of left DLPFC during executive functioning and the severity of depressive symptoms, suggesting that the brain activity induced by acupuncture is likely to be influenced by the baseline disease severity in patients with MDD.

Abstract
Open data initiatives such as the UK Biobank and Human Connectome Project provide researchers with access to neuroimaging, genetic, and other data for large samples of left-and right-handed participants, allowing for more robust investigations of handedness than ever before. Handedness inventories are universal tools for assessing participant handedness in these large-scale neuroimaging contexts. These self-report measures are typically used to screen and recruit subjects, but they are also widely used as variables in statistical analyses of fMRI and other data. Recent investigations into the validity of handedness inventories, however, suggest that self-report data from these inventories might not reflect hand preference/performance as faithfully as previously thought. Using data from the Human Connectome Project, we assessed correspondence between three handedness measures - the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI), the Rolyan 9-hole pegboard, and grip strength - in 1179 healthy subjects. We show poor association between the different handedness measures, with roughly 10% of the sample having at least one behavioural measure which indicates hand-performance bias opposite to the EHI score, and over 65% of left-handers having one or more mismatched handedness scores. We discuss implications for future work, urging researchers to critically consider direction, degree, and consistency of handedness in their data.

Abstract
The biomechanical function of the wrist is widely assessed by measuring the range of motion (RoM) in two separate orthogonal planes: flexion-extension (FE) and radioulnar deviation (RUD). However, the two motions are coupled. The aim of this study is to compare wrist circumduction with FE and RUD RoM in terms of representativeness of the kinematic requirements for performing activities of daily living (ADL). To this end, the wrist motion of healthy participants was measured while performing maximum RoM in FE and in RUD, circumduction, and thirty-two representative ADL. Active and functional RoM (ARoM and FRoM) were computed in each plane, the evolving circumduction curves were adjusted to ellipses, and intensity maps representing the frequency of the coupling angles in ADL were plotted, both per ADL and globally for both hands. Ellipses representing different percentages of coupling angles in ADL were also plotted. Wrist circumduction fits the coupling angles measured in ADL better than ARoM or FRoM. As a novelty, quantitative data for both circumduction and the coupling angles required in ADL are provided, shedding light on the real biomechanical function requirements of the wrist. Results might be used to quantify mobility reduction and its impact on the performance of ADL, globally and per ADL, to enhance rehabilitation strategies, as well as in clinical decision-making, robotics, and prostheses.

Abstract
Researchers have long been interested in whether lateral preference is associated with giftedness, season of birth, and/or ADHD constructs (short attention span, high level of activity, and impulsivity). The objective of this study was to examine these associations in a large, longitudinal sample of U.S. children (National Collaborative Perinatal Project (CPP), 1959-1973). Children born to women in this pregnancy cohort underwent a neonatal exam and an exam at age 7 years to assess lateral preference of the hand and eye, IQ on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), and ADHD symptoms. Children with perinatal/neonatal risk factors for neurologic impairment or early signs of neurological abnormality were excluded from our analyses. The final sample included 25,385 children. Associations between laterality and IQ were examined using linear and logistic regression models adjusted for sex, race, and socioeconomic status. Associations between laterality and ADHD symptoms and between season of birth and laterality were estimated using multivariable logistic regression. In this large, longitudinal study of neurologically healthy children, modest associations were observed between hand/eye preference and IQ and hyperactivity only.

Abstract
Although consistency of handedness (the strength of dominant hand preference) is increasingly recognized as an important individual difference, there are questions about how to best measure it. A recent meta-analysis showed that researchers have often failed to report details of responses and response formats to handedness test items. In addition to measuring handedness direction (i.e., left versus right handedness), there can be utility to dichotomizing the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) into consistent and inconsistent dominant handedness, despite controversy over the best means of doing so. In this study, we performed a discriminant function analysis of EHI items to determine which items best predicted handedness consistency versus handedness direction. Although the same discriminant function accounted for most of the variance for both dependent measures, writing and drawing EHI items were the strongest predictors of handedness direction and combing and opening jars items were the strongest predictors of handedness consistency. As different items on the EHI predicted these different handedness dimensions, we discuss the implications of dichotomizing EHI items into both relevant dimensions for both biological and environmental theories of the basis of handedness and for future handedness research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left-handedness prevalence has been consistently reported at around 10% with heritability estimates at around 25%. Higher left-handedness prevalence has been reported in males and in twins. Lower prevalence has been reported in Asia, but it remains unclear whether this is due to biological or cultural factors. Most studies are based on samples with European ethnicities and using the preferred hand for writing as key assessment. Here, we investigated handedness in a sample of Chinese school children in Hong Kong, including 426 singletons and 205 pairs of twins, using both the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory and Pegboard Task. RESULTS Based on a binary definition of writing hand, we found a higher prevalence of left-handedness (8%) than what was previously reported in Asian datasets. We found no evidence of increased left-handedness in twins, but our results were in line with previous findings showing that males have a higher tendency to be left-handed than females. Heritability was similar for both hand preference (21%) and laterality indexes (22%). However, these two handedness measures present only a moderate correlation (.42) and appear to be underpinned by different genetic factors. CONCLUSION In summary, we report new reference data for an ethnic group usually underrepresented in the literature. Our heritability analysis supports the idea that different measures will capture different components of handedness and, as a consequence, datasets assessed with heterogeneous criteria are not easily combined or compared.

Abstract
Saccade-induced retrieval enhancement (SIRE) effects refer to the finding that memory can be enhanced when a short period of saccadic eye movements takes place prior to retrieval. Previous published work testifies to this eye movement advantage, but no work has yet examined if SIRE effects can be found when retrieval demands are high as a result of testing non-studied memoranda that are identical in name/conceptual codes, similar in perceptual features, but differ in terms of perceptual-item-specific information. The results indicate SIRE effects can be found under such conditions and are independent of encoding orientation (intentional vs. incidental). More particularly, SIRE effects manifested themselves in terms of the retrieval of item-specific detail and recollection (vs. familiarity). In terms of the latter, recollection but not familiarity was enhanced by eye movements. These findings are considered in the context of extant theories of SIRE and related research.

Abstract
The importance of diverse lifestyle factors in sustaining cognition during aging and delaying the onset of decline in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias cannot be overstated. We explored the influence of cognitive, social, and physical lifestyle factors on resting-state lagged linear connectivity (LLC) in high-density electroencephalography (EEG) in adults, ages 35-75 years. Diverse lifestyle factors build cognitive reserve (CR), protecting cognition in the presence of physical brain decline. Differences in LLC were examined between high- and low-CR groups formed using cognitive, social, and exercise lifestyle factors. LLC is a measure of lagged coherence that excludes zero phase contributions and limits the effects of volume conduction on connectivity estimates. Significant differences in LLC were identified for cognitive and social factors, but not exercise. Participants high in social CR possessed greater local and long-range connectivity in theta and low alpha for eyes-open and eyes-closed recording conditions. In contrast, participants high in cognitive CR exhibited greater eyes-closed long-range connectivity between the occipital lobe and other cortical regions in low alpha. Greater eyes-closed local LLC in delta was also present in men high in cognitive CR. Cognitive factor scores correlated with sustained attention, whereas social factors scores correlated with spatial working memory. Gender was a significant covariate in our analyses, with women displaying higher local and long-range LLC in low beta. Our findings support distinct relationships between CR and LLC, as well as CR and cognitive function for cognitive and social subcomponents. These patterns reflect the importance of diverse lifestyle factors in building CR.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to develop and validate an instrument to quantitatively assess the handedness of basketballers in basketball tasks (Basketball Handedness Inventory, BaHI) and to compare it with their handedness in daily activities by the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI). The participants were 111 basketballers and 40 controls. All subjects completed the EHI and only basketballers filled in the BaHI. To validate the BaHI, a voluntary subsample of basketballers repeated the BaHI. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a two-factor model. Our results show that: (i) Handedness score (R) in daily actions did not differ between basketball players (R by EHI = 69.3 ± 44.6) and the control group (R by EHI = 64.5 ± 58.6); (ii) basketballers more frequently favored performing certain sport tasks with the left hand or mixed hands (as highlighted by R by BaHI = 50.1 ± 47.1), although their choice was primarily the right hand in everyday gestures; and (iii) this preference was especially true for athletes at the highest levels of performance (R by BaHI of A1 league = 38.6 ± 58.3) and for those playing in selected roles (point guard's R = 29.4 ± 67.4). Our findings suggest that professional training induces handedness changes in basketball tasks. The BaHI provides a valid and reliable measure of the skilled hand in basketball. This will allow coaches to assess mastery of the ball according to the hand used by the athlete in the different tasks and roles.

Abstract
An individual's nervous and cognitive systems are lateralized, and handedness represents a behavioral manifestation of such organization. Therefore, accurately and reliably measuring handedness has repercussion on our understanding of both the human brain and cognition. The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) is the most frequently used instrument to measure handedness both in clinical practice and research. We assessed the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the EHI in a sample of 348 Chilean university students by confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach's alpha and composite reliability were calculated to evaluate the internal consistency and reliability of the EHI, while the average variance extracted was estimated to evaluate its convergent validity. A 10-item unifactorial structure was confirmed, with factor loadings ≥0.50, showing excellent goodness-of-fit indicators, very high internal consistency and adequate composite reliability and convergent validity. Socio-demographic variables (sex, area of residence and belonging to an indigenous people or community) did not significantly modulate the EHI scores. Overall, by using this validated version of the EHI to accurately and reliably measure handedness in the greater Spanish population, researchers will be able to produce robust data to tackle the still open questions of lateralization in human cognitive and neural architecture.

Abstract
A previous study reported superior categorical and coordinate spatial task performance in inconsistent-versus consistent-right-handers (ICH versus CRH). Propper et al. used a three-dimensional (3D) computer-based task wherein individuals navigated to 21 locations within a realistic cityscape. During testing, participants were queried on their categorical and coordinate spatial knowledge of the map. In that study, the categorical and coordinate tasks may have inadvertently encouraged language coding of learned spatial information, potentially confounding spatial processing with recall ability for language-based information. Also, that study used a between-subjects design, which precludes examination of relationships between spatial knowledge as a function of handedness. The present study duplicated the learning task in Propper et al. using test stimuli that more faithfully represent spatial, and not language-based, information, as well as a within-subjects design. Results did not significantly replicate the previous study. Possible reasons for this finding are discussed.

Abstract
Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is widely used to probe corticospinal excitability through Motor Evoked Potential (MEP) amplitude measurements. The input-output (I/O) curve is a sigmoid-shaped relation between the MEP amplitude at incremented TMS intensities. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between seven parameters derived from the sigmoid function. Methods: Principal Component Analysis and Spearman's rank correlation matrices were used to determine if the seven I/O curve parameters capture similar or, conversely, different aspects of the corticospinal excitability in 24 healthy subjects and 40 stroke survivors with a hand motor impairment. Results: Maximum amplitude (MEPmax), peak slope, area under the I/O curve (AUC), and MEP amplitude recorded at 140% of the resting motor threshold showed strong linear relationships with each other (ρ > 0.72, p < 0.001). Results were found to be similar in healthy subjects and in both hemispheres of stroke patients. Our results did not support an added benefit of sampling entire I/O curves in both healthy subjects and stroke patients, with the exception of S50, the stimulus intensity needed to obtain half of MEPmax amplitude. Conclusions: This demonstrates that MEP elicited at a single stimulus intensity allows to capture the same characteristics of the corticospinal excitability as measured by the AUC, MEPmax and the peak slope, which may be of interest in both clinical and research settings. However, it is still necessary to plot I/O curves if an effect or a difference is expected at S50.

Abstract
Questionnaires are commonly used to measure handedness. However, popular measures do not capture hand preference by skill type, thus reducing handedness to a single dimension. An exception is the Home Handedness Questionnaire (HHQ), an action-based measure developed initially for children, which measures skills across two dimensions of handedness: unimanual actions and role differentiated bimanual manipulation (RDBM). The goal of the current study was to confirm the factor structure of the HHQ in a large sample of adults (N = 1051). A secondary goal was to measure RDBM hand preference in adults. To further validate the HHQ, participants also completed the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI). Confirmatory factor analysis verified the two-factor structure of the HHQ, and a one-factor solution was replicated for the EHI. Individuals that were classified as consistent on the EHI had stronger preferences for unimanual and RDBM hand use on the HHQ. Right hand patterning was reduced for RDBM compared to unimanual on the HHQ, and the EHI. The HHQ was found to be reliable and valid against the EHI. The HHQ offers researchers a tool to examine individual differences across manual skills that comprise the neuropsychological phenomenon handedness, and to more broadly examine laterality patterns with respect to cognition.
