Abstract
Abnormal immune and inflammatory responses are considered to contribute to schizophrenia (SZ). The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inexpensive and reproducible marker of systemic inflammatory responses. Accumulating studies have demonstrated that NLR values are increased in SZ compared to healthy controls and closely related to clinical symptoms in antipsychotic-naïve first-episode SZ (ANFES) patients. However, to our knowledge, only one study has examined NLR in relation to neurocognition in 27 first-episode psychosis patients and 27 controls. This study aimed to examine the relationship of NLR values with cognitive performances in ANFES patients with a larger sample size. Whole blood cell counts were measured in ninety-seven ANFES patients and fifty-six control subjects. The neurocognitive functions of all subjects were measured by the repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status (RBANS). ANFES patients performed worse on cognition and had increased NLR values relative to healthy controls. In addition, increased NLR was negatively associated with cognitive functions in ANFES patients. Lymphocyte count was positively correlated with cognitive functions in patients. These findings suggest that the abnormal immune and inflammation system indicated by NLR may be involved in the cognitive functions in ANFES patients.

Abstract
Cytokines are among the important effectors and messenger molecules for restoring the homeostasis tissue after an inflammatory response. The association between IL-6 and IL-10 genes polymorphisms with the schizophrenia susceptibility have yielded controversial results. To reconcile the results, a systematic review followed by meta-analysis was performed to assess the association. We carried out literature searches of PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, and Web of Sciences databases. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated to assess the strength of the association. Subgroup analysis, heterogeneity analyses, and publication bias were also calculated in the meta-analysis. A total of 22 case-control studies, consisting of 4,993 schizophrenic patients and 5,195 healthy controls, were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis suggests that the IL-6 rs1800795 polymorphism displays a protective role against schizophrenia, while the IL-10 rs1800896 and rs1800872 polymorphisms confer an increased risk of schizophrenia. Similar results were found in subgroup analysis by ethnicity. We did not find association between IL-10 rs1800871 polymorphism and schizophrenia susceptibility. Finally, this meta-analysis suggested that the dysregulation of cytokines could lead to the pathogenesis of the schizophrenia.

Abstract
Immune gene variants are known to be associated with the risk of psychiatric disorders, their clinical manifestations, and their response to therapy. This narrative review summarizes the current literature over the past decade on the association of polymorphic variants of cytokine genes with risk, severity, and response to treatment for severe mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. A search of literature in databases was carried out using keywords related to depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, inflammation, and cytokines. Gene lists were extracted from publications to identify common genes and pathways for these mental disorders. Associations between polymorphic variants of the IL1B, IL6, and TNFA genes were the most replicated and relevant in depression. Polymorphic variants of the IL1B, IL6, IL6R, IL10, IL17A, and TNFA genes have been associated with schizophrenia. Bipolar disorder has mainly been associated with polymorphic variants of the IL1B gene. Interestingly, the IL6R gene polymorphism (rs2228145) was associated with all three diseases. Some cytokine genes have also been associated with clinical presentation and response to pharmacotherapy. There is also evidence that some specific polymorphic variants may affect the expression of cytokine genes. Thus, the data from this review indicate a link between neuroinflammation and severe mental disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The relationships among interleukin (IL)-10 levels, anxiety, and cognitive status after stroke remain controversial. We aimed to determine the associations of serum IL-10 levels with poststroke anxiety (PSA) and poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). METHODS We recruited 350 patients with stroke, of whom only 151 completed a 1-month follow-up assessment. The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) were used to assess the cognitive status and anxiety, respectively. Serum IL-10 levels were measured within 24 hours of admission. RESULTS IL-10 levels were significantly lower in the PSA group than in the non-PSA group, and they were negatively associated with HAMA scores (r=-0.371, p<0.001). After adjusting for all potential confounders, IL-10 levels remained an independent predictor of PSA (odds ratio=0.471, 95% confidence interval=0.237-0.936, p=0.032). IL-10 levels were strongly correlated with behavior during interviews, psychic anxiety, and somatic anxiety. Patients without PSCI had higher IL-10 levels were higher in non-PSCI patients than in PSCI patients, and they were positively associated with MMSE scores in the bivariate correlation analysis (r=0.169, p=0.038), and also with memory capacity, naming ability, and copying capacity. However, IL-10 did not predict PSCI in the univariable or multivariable logistic regression. CONCLUSIONS Low IL-10 levels were associated with increased risks of PSA and PSCI at a 1-month follow-up after stroke. Serum IL-10 levels may therefore be helpful in predicting PSA.

Abstract
Evidence from clinical, preclinical, and post-mortem studies supports the inflammatory/immune hypothesis of schizophrenia pathogenesis. Less evident is the link between the inflammatory background and two well-recognized functional and structural findings of schizophrenia pathophysiology: the dopamine-glutamate aberrant interaction and the alteration of dendritic spines architecture, both believed to be the “quantal” elements of cortical-subcortical dysfunctional network. In this systematic review, we tried to capture the major findings linking inflammation, aberrant glutamate-dopamine interaction, and post-synaptic changes under a direct and inverse translational perspective, a paramount picture that at present is lacking. The inflammatory effects on dopaminergic function appear to be bidirectional: the inflammation influences dopamine release, and dopamine acts as a regulator of discrete inflammatory processes involved in schizophrenia such as dysregulated interleukin and kynurenine pathways. Furthermore, the link between inflammation and glutamate is strongly supported by clinical studies aimed at exploring overactive microglia in schizophrenia patients and maternal immune activation models, indicating impaired glutamate regulation and reduced N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) function. In addition, an inflammatory/immune-induced alteration of post-synaptic density scaffold proteins, crucial for downstream NMDAR signaling and synaptic efficacy, has been demonstrated. According to these findings, a significant increase in plasma inflammatory markers has been found in schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls, associated with reduced cortical integrity and functional connectivity, relevant to the cognitive deficit of schizophrenia. Finally, the link between altered inflammatory/immune responses raises relevant questions regarding potential new therapeutic strategies specifically for those forms of schizophrenia that are resistant to canonical antipsychotics or unresponsive to clozapine.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the impact of inflammatory cytokines on the cognitive performance of patients with schizophrenia. The included patients met the criteria for schizophrenia spectrum disorder and were aged between 15 and 40 years, with a duration of illness ≤1 year. Plasma tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α; interferon-γ; and interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-12 levels were measured. A computerized neurocognitive battery, measures for social cognitive function, and clinical measures were administered. A total of 174 patients with first-episode psychosis were enrolled. The TNF-α level was negatively correlated with scores on the digit span, verbal learning, and Wisconsin card sorting tests, and the number of correct responses on the continuous performance test (CR-CPT), whereas a positive correlation was detected with the trail making test (TMT)-B time. The interferon-γ level was negatively correlated with performance on the false belief and visual learning tests. The IL-1β level was positively correlated with the TMT-A time and CPT reaction time, whereas it was negatively correlated with the CR-CPT and performance on the visual learning and social cognitive tests. The IL-12 level was negatively correlated with the CR-CPT and false belief test. Our results suggest that proinflammatory cytokines are associated with cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a classic anti-inflammatory cytokine that exerts its effects via the receptor complexes IL-10RA and IL-10RB. Loss of IL-10RB results in many diseases. Moreover, IL-10RB is closely associated with neuronal survival and synaptic formation. However, the regulation of IL-10RB gene expression remains elusive. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the expression of IL-10RB gene is increased in brain of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its transcriptional regulation. METHODS We examined the gene expression of AD patient brain from public database and detected the protein expression of AD model mouse brain by western blot. We constructed a variety of reporter gene plasmids with different lengths or mutation sites, tested the promoter activity and defined the functional region of the promoter with the luciferase reporter assay. The protein-DNA binding between transcription factors and the promoter was analyzed using chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). RESULTS We found that the IL-10RB is elevated in the brain of AD patient and AD model mice. The minimal promoter of the IL-10RB gene is located in the -90 to +51 bp region (relative to the transcriptional start site) and is sufficient for high-level expression of the IL-10RB gene. Transcription factors Sp8 and Sp9 bind to the IL-10RB promoter in vitro. The overexpression or knockdown of Sp8 and Sp9 affected the IL-10RB promoter activity and its gene expression. CONCLUSION Our study functionally characterized the promoter of the IL-10RB gene and demonstrated that Sp8 and Sp9 regulated its expression.

Abstract
AIM A metabolomics approach has recently been used to identify metabolites associated with response to antipsychotic treatment. This study was designed to identify the predictive biomarkers of response to olanzapine monotherapy using a metabolomics-based strategy. METHODS Twenty-five first-episode and drug-naïve female patients with schizophrenia were recruited and treated with olanzapine for 4 weeks. Psychiatric symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline and 4-week follow-up. RESULTS Positive subscore, general psychopathology subscore, and PANSS total score were significantly decreased after treatment. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS)-based metabolomics approach identified 72 differential metabolites after treatment. In addition, the baseline levels of methyl n-formylanthranilate (MNFT) were correlated with the rate of reduction in the positive subscore or PANSS total score. However, increase in MNFT after treatment was not associated with the rate of reduction in the PANSS total score or its subscores. Subsequent regression analysis revealed that the baseline MNFT levels predicted the treatment outcomes after olanzapine monotherapy for 4 weeks in patients with schizophrenia. CONCLUSIONS Our study results suggest that the baseline MNFT levels in the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism may be predictive of the treatment response to olanzapine in schizophrenia.

Abstract
AIM Cognitive deficits are the core factors impacting quality of life among patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Effective method of treatment for this domain of symptoms remains lacking. Recent evidence suggests the link between impaired cognition and aberrant inflammatory response. Severity of symptoms might be linked to individual genetic predispositions and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding interleukins and their receptors. Current genetic association studies include anti-inflammatory interleukins, such as IL10. Functional polymorphisms of IL10 (rs1800871, rs18008729) have been indicated to affect information processing in schizophrenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, we analyzed the potential impact of 27 functional SNPs in 8 cytokine genes on cognitive parameters measured by Wisconsin card-sorting test (WCST) in schizophrenia group (n = 150) and healthy controls (n = 152). RESULTS We found significant associations of two functional polymorphisms of IL10 (rs1800871, rs1800872) and WCST results. Allele A carriers in rs1800871 performed significantly better in Percent of Conceptual Level Responses (CLR%). Allele A carriers in rs1800871 and allele T carriers in rs1800872 obtained better results in Completed Categories (CC). The impact of illness duration was observed, with better performance of recent-onset patients. CONCLUSIONS Results of this study indicate that genetic variants of inflammatory response are associated with cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. The role of cytokines in schizophrenia need to be investigated in the aspect of pro-/anti-inflammatory imbalance. Altered inflammatory response promote chronic mild inflammation in the brain and aberrant synaptic plasticity.

Abstract
This review is focused on several psychiatric disorders in which cognitive impairment is a major component of the disease, influencing life quality. There are plenty of data proving that cognitive impairment accompanies and even underlies some psychiatric disorders. In addition, sources provide information on the biological background of cognitive problems associated with mental illness. This scientific review aims to summarize the current knowledge about neurobiological mechanisms of cognitive impairment in people with schizophrenia, depression, mild cognitive impairment and dementia (including Alzheimer's disease).The review provides data about the prevalence of cognitive impairment in people with mental illness and associated biological markers.

Abstract
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) tolerance can reduce the neuroinflammation caused by high fat maternal diets; however, there are no reports that have evaluated the effects of prenatal LPS exposure on the memories of the offspring of high-fat diet fed dams. This study evaluated the effects of prenatal LPS exposure on the inflammatory parameters and redox status in the brain, as well as the object recognition memory of adolescent offspring of Wistar rat dams that were treated with a high-fat diet during gestation and lactation. Female pregnant Wistar rats randomly received a standard diet (17.5% fat) or a high-fat diet (45.0% fat) during gestation and lactation. On gestation days 8, 10, and 12, half of the females in each group were intraperitoneally treated with LPS (0.1 mg.kg-1). After weaning, the male offspring were placed in cages in standard conditions, and at 6 weeks old, animals underwent the novel object recognition test (for short- and long-term memory). The offspring of the high-fat diet fed dams showed increased hippocampus IL-6 levels (21-days-old) and impaired short-term memories. These effects were avoided in the offspring of high-fat diet fed dams submitted to prenatal LPS exposure, which showed greater hippocampus IL-10 levels (at 21- and 50-days-old), increased antioxidant activity (50-days-old) in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, without memory impairments (short- and long-term memory). IL-6 has been consistently implicated in memory deficits and as an endogenous mechanism for limiting plasticity, while IL-10 regulates glial activation and has a strong association with improvements in cognitive function. Prenatal LPS exposure preventing the increase of IL-6 in the hippocampus and the impairment to short-term object recognition memory caused by the high-fat maternal diet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In psychotic and mood disorders, immune alterations are hypothesized to underlie cognitive symptoms, as they have been associated with elevated blood levels of inflammatory cytokines, kynurenine metabolites, and markers of microglial activation. The current meta-analysis synthesizes all available clinical evidence on the associations between immunomarkers (IMs) and cognition in these psychiatric illnesses. METHODS Pubmed, Web of Science, and Psycinfo were searched for peer-reviewed studies on schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), or major depressive disorder (MDD) including an association analysis between at least one baseline neuropsychological outcome measure (NP) and one IM (PROSPERO ID:CRD42021278371). Quality assessment was performed using BIOCROSS. Correlation meta-analyses, and random effect models, were conducted in Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3 investigating the association between eight cognitive domains and pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory indices (PII and AII) as well as individual IM. RESULTS Seventy-five studies (n = 29,104) revealed global cognitive performance (GCP) to be very weakly associated to PII (r = -0.076; p = 0.003; I2 = 77.4) or AII (r = 0.067; p = 0.334; I2 = 38.0) in the combined patient sample. Very weak associations between blood-based immune markers and global or domain-specific GCP were found, either combined or stratified by diagnostic subgroup (GCP x PII: SZ: r = -0.036, p = 0.370, I2 = 70.4; BD: r = -0.095, p = 0.013, I2 = 44.0; MDD: r = -0.133, p = 0.040, I2 = 83.5). We found evidence of publication bias. DISCUSSION There is evidence of only a weak association between blood-based immune markers and cognition in mood and psychotic disorders. Significant publication and reporting biases were observed and most likely underlie the inflation of such associations in individual studies.

OBJECTIVE Cognitive improvement after antipsychotic agents in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) appears to involve redox regulation through neurotrophins such as brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). This study examined whether cognitive improvement was associated with the increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and whether higher levels of BDNF could have a permissive role in allowing SOD to improve cognition. METHODS We examined this hypothesis in 183 drug-naïve first-episode SCZ patients taking risperidone monotherapy for 12 weeks. We measured total copper-zinc SOD (CuZn-SOD), manganese SOD (Mn-SOD), and SOD activities and BDNF levels in these patients and compared their levels with 152 healthy controls. We assessed cognitive functioning and clinical symptoms at baseline and 12-week follow-up. RESULTS After treatment with risperidone, CuZn-SOD activity was significantly increased, and BDNF levels were slightly increased. Increased CuZn-SOD activity was associated with the cognitive effectiveness of risperidone monotherapy. The BDNF levels and SOD activities were correlated at baseline but not after 12-week treatment. Furthermore, baseline CuZn-SOD activity positively correlated with improvement on the delayed memory subscale of the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status only in the high BDNF subgroup. CONCLUSIONS Our longitudinal study suggests that risperidone can enhance SOD activity and that, in combination with higher baseline BDNF levels acting in a permissive role, can improve cognitive impairments in SCZ. Greater baseline CuZn-SOD activity also may have predictive value for cognitive improvement of delayed memory in SCZ patients receiving risperidone treatment.

Abstract
The role of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the mechanisms of learning and memory, modulation of synaptic plasticity in the mammalian brain has not received sufficient attention. These issues are discussed in this review, and among the many cytokines, attention is paid to the most studied in this respect IL-10, IL-4, IL-13 and TGF-β. The level of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the brain tends to increase during memory acquisition, but the significance of such an increase is unclear. We hypothesize that anti-inflammatory cytokines primarily protect and optimize the functioning of neuronal circuits involved in information processing. The increased local activity of neurons during memory acquisition activates many signaling molecules, and some of them can trigger unwanted processes (including neuroinflammation), but increased levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines prevent this triggering. Each of the anti-inflammatory cytokines plays a specific role in supporting information processing. For example, the role of IL-4 and IL-13 in recruiting T cells to the meninges during training in healthy animals has been most studied. It has also been shown that TGF-β is able to optimize late stage LTP in the hippocampus and support the consolidation of memory traces in behavioral studies. Cytokines have an effect on learning and memory through their influence on neuroplasticity, neurogenesis in the hippocampus and regulation of the neurovascular unit. Experiments have shown such an effect, and the data obtained create the prerequisites for new therapeutic approaches to the correction of cognitive impairments.

Abstract
ApoE gene polymorphism may be involved in the change in blood lipid profile and cognitive impairment of the general population. However, few studies explored the effects of ApoE gene polymorphism on blood lipid levels and cognition in schizophrenia. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was employed to evaluate the cognition and the SNPStats was used to investigate the association of ApoE rs429358 with schizophrenia. The models of analysis of covariance and multivariate analysis were conducted to investigate the effect of ApoE rs429358 on cognition in schizophrenia. Altogether, 637 patients with schizophrenia and 467 healthy controls were recruited in this study. The findings in the case group found that both the ApoA1 and ApoB levels were predictors for RBANS total score (p < 0.001 vs. p = 0.011), immediate memory (p < 0.001 vs. p = 0.019), language (p < 0.001 vs. p = 0.013), attention (p < 0.001 vs. p < 0.001), except ApoA1 level only was a predictor for visuospatial/constructional (p = 0.014) and delayed memory (p < 0.001). When the association was examined in different ApoE rs429358 genotype subgroups, the association between ApoA1 level and RBANS scores (except for the language score) or between ApoB level and RBANS scores (except for the attention score) was regulated by ApoE rs429358. Our results suggest that patients with schizophrenia have broad cognitive impairment compared with healthy controls. For patients with schizophrenia, both ApoA1 and ApoB levels were positively associated with cognition. There was a significant association between ApoA1 or ApoB levels and cognition in schizophrenia, which was regulated by the ApoE rs429358.

Abstract
Dopaminergic and inflammatory systems have been proven to play an important role in the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia. Although increasing evidence indicates two systems have strong interaction, the relevant research on this interaction is still limited. Catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10) play critical functions in dopaminergic and inflammatory systems respectively, and their genetic polymorphisms are both associated with cognitive function. However, the interactive effect of their genetic polymorphisms has not been investigated. In this study, COMT Val158Met (rs4680) and IL-10 -592A/C (rs1800872) polymorphisms were measured in patients with chronic schizophrenia (n = 244) and healthy controls (n = 396), and their cognitive functions were assessed using the "Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status" (RBANS). We found that IL-10 alone had no effect on cognitive function, while COMT affected language ability and interacted with the schizophrenia (case vs control) or sex in multiple RBANS indexes. Additionally, we found there was a significant interactive effect between IL-10 and COMT polymorphisms on multiple cognitive indexes of RBANS. In detail, the analysis showed that the IL-10 polymorphism had opposite effects on cognitive function in different COMT genotype carriers; meanwhile, the polymorphism of COMT only had a significant effect on cognitive function in IL-10 C carriers. And this interaction was more significant in schizophrenia than in controls. Our study discovered for the first time, there is an interactive effect between IL-10 and COMT genetic polymorphisms on cognitive function, which is valuable for further investigations and drug administrations associated with both systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ecological epidemiology suggests that hospital admissions for schizophrenia are associated with an increased environmental PM2.5, but no prospective study has verified this result, and the physiological mechanism is not clear. METHODS We used a repeated-measures design to prospectively assess the association of environmental PM2.5 and the risk of relapse in schizophrenia, and used two linear mixed-effects models to explore possible mediating effects of immune cytokines on the premise of controlling confounders. RESULTS We import the data using EpiData software, and collate and analyze of the data using R software. The increase of PM2.5 at lag0 had the greatest impact on the relapse of schizophrenia (for each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, the relapse risk score increased by 1.504, that is to say, odds ratio (OR) = 4.500 (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.849-7.106,P < 0.001)), and cumulative effects lasted for four days with the maximum at the second day (for each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, the relapse risk score increased by 1.301, OR = 3.673 (95%CI: 1.962-6.876,P < 0.001)). PM2.5 exposure was statistically related to four symptom dimensions of early signs scale (ESS), and the symptoms most affected by the increased PM2.5 were depression/withdrawal (ESSN) (OR = 1.990, 95%CI: 1.701-2.328), anxiety/agitation (ESS-A) (OR = 1.537, 95%CI: 1.340-1.763), initial psychosis (ESS-IP) (OR = 1.398, 95%CI: 1.151-1.697), and disinhibition (ESS-D) (OR = 1.235, 95%CI: 1.133-1.347). Furthermore, there are three statistically significant pathways in intermediary analysis: of PM2.5 and relapse risk: "PM2.5 → IL-17 → ESS", "PM2.5 → IL-17 → ESS-A", and "PM2.5 → IL-17 → ESS-N", and the intermediary ratio of IL-17 was 11.66%, 16.37% and 22.55%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Increased environmental PM2.5 is a risk factor for the relapse of schizophrenia. Early relapse identification and intervention based on clinical characteristics are of great significance for timely termination of relapse and slowing down of relapse.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is evidence that microRNA-195 (miR-195) is associated with schizophrenia (SZ) and cognition, but the relationship between miR-195 and cognitive impairment in SZ is still unknown. Sex differences in both microRNA (miRNA) expression and cognition were found in SZ. We aim to investigate whether sex moderates the relationship between miR-195 levels and cognition in SZ. METHODS We recruited 121 drug-free SZ patients and 129 healthy controls. miR-195 expression levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were measured using qRT-PCR. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was performed to assess cognitive function. MANCOVA, ANCOVA, correlation analysis and hierarchical linear regression analysis were used to test the effect of sex on the aforementioned variables. RESULTS All RBANS scores significantly decreased in patients compared to healthy controls (all p < 0.001); ANCOVA analysis demonstrated female SZ patients had lower delayed memory score (F = 15.36, p < 0.001) and total score (F = 5.26, p = 0.024) than male patients. There was no diagnosis, sex or sex by diagnosis interaction effect on miR-195 levels (all p > 0.05). Interestingly, correlation analysis showed significant negative association between miR-195 and attention score (r = -0.389, p = 0.019), delayed memory score (r= -0.351, p = 0.036), and total score (r = -0.386, p = 0.020) only in female patients. Hierarchical regression analysis showed sex by miR-195 interaction was a significant predictor of the RBANS total score (ΔR2 = 0.042, F(1, 67) = 4.71, p = 0.033). CONCLUSION Our data indicate that miR-195 is associated with cognitive impairment in female SZ patients, and it may be involved in the underlying mechanism of sex differences in cognitive impairment in SZ.

Abstract
Prior evidence suggested that inflammation and inflammatory cytokines polymorphisms might be essential in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) and cognitive decline. The following study investigated the associations between interleukin-35 (IL-35) polymorphisms and cognitive decline in CHD patients over a 2-year period.CHD patients were enrolled between January 2015 and January 2016. Cognitive function, including memory, orientation, verbal and attention were assessed using Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-Modified (TICS-m) during a 2-year follow-up. Genotypes of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including rs2243115, rs568408, rs582054, rs583911, rs428253, rs4740 and rs393581 of IL-35 were examined by MassArray (Sequenom). The differences of TICS-m score between 2-year interval were used to estimate the cognitive decline; linear regression model was used to analyze the association between IL-35 polymorphisms and cognitive decline in CHD patients after a 2-year follow-up.The mean age of study individuals was 60.58 (±7.86) years old. There were 255 (68.5%) males and 117 (31.5%) female patients. The TICS-m scores, including overall cognition score, verbal attention and memory scores gradually decreased over a 2 year follow up period (P < .001, respectively), whereas there was no difference in orientation function score between the 1-year and 2-year follow-up (P = .448). Furthermore, after adjusting for age, sex, history of hypertension(HT) and Diabetes mellitus(DM), smoking, education, Therapy regimen (PCI, CABG, medication) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and the severity of coronary artery stenosis (Gensini score), no association was found between IL-35 rs2243115, rs568408, rs582054, rs583911, rs428253, rs4740 genotypes and cognitive decline in CHD patients over a 2-year period.Our data reveled that IL-35 polymorphisms was not associated with cognitive decline in CHD patients over a 2-year period. Yet, further studies are needed to confirm the role of cytokine gene polymorphisms in cognitive decline among CHD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior resting state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging studies (rs-fMRI) via the regional homogeneity (ReHo) method have demonstrated inconsistent and conflicting results because of several confounding factors, such as small sample size, medicinal influence, and illness duration. Relationships between ReHo measures and cognitive impairments in patients with drug-naive First-Episode Schizophrenia (dn-FES) are rarely reported. This study was conducted to explore the correlations between ReHo measures and cognitive deficits and clinical symptoms in patients with dn-FES. METHODS A total of 69 patients with dn-FES and 74 healthy controls were recruited. MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB), Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), and Positive And Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to assess cognitive function, Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and clinical symptoms, respectively. The correlations between ReHo maps and cognitive deficits and the severity of symptoms were examined using strict correlation analysis. RESULTS ReHo values in right Middle Frontal Gyrus (MFG) and Superior Frontal Gyrus (SFG) increased in dn-FES group, whereas ReHo values in right cuneus decreased. Correlation analysis showed that the ReHo values in right MFG positively correlated with attention/vigilance impairments, social cognition deficits, and the severity of clinical manifestations. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that abnormal spontaneous activities in right MFG reflect illness severity and cognitive deficits, which also serve as a basis for establishing objective diagnostic markers and might be a clinical intervention target for treating patients with schizophrenia.

Advancing study of cognitive impairments for antipsychotic-naïve psychosis comparing high-income versus low- and middle-income countries with a focus on urban China: Systematic review of cognition and study methodology. Abstract
BACKGROUND Comparing the course of antipsychotic-naïve psychosis in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) may help to illuminate core pathophysiologies associated with this condition. Previous reviews-primarily from high-income countries (HIC)-identified cognitive deficits in antipsychotic-naïve, first-episode psychosis, but did not examine whether individuals with psychosis with longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP > 5 years) were included, nor whether LMIC were broadly represented. METHOD A comprehensive search of PUBMED from January 2002-August 2018 identified 36 studies that compared cognitive functioning in antipsychotic-naïve individuals with psychosis (IWP) and healthy controls, 20 from HIC and 16 from LMIC. RESULTS A key gap was identified in that LMIC study samples were primarily shorter DUP (<5 years) and were primarily conducted in urban China. Most studies matched cases and controls for age and gender but only 9 (24%) had sufficient statistical power for cognitive comparisons. Compared with healthy controls, performance of antipsychotic-naïve IWP was significantly worse in 81.3% (230/283) of different tests of cognitive domains assessed (90.1% in LMIC [118/131] and 73.7% [112/152] in HIC). CONCLUSIONS Most LMIC studies of cognition in antipsychotic-naïve IWP adopted standardized procedures and, like HIC studies, found broad-based impairments in cognitive functioning. However, these LMIC studies were often underpowered and primarily included samples typical of HIC: primarily male, young-adult, high-school educated IWP, in their first episode of illness with relatively short DUP (<5 years). To enhance understanding of the long-term natural course of cognitive impairments in untreated psychosis, future studies from LMIC should recruit community-dwelling IWP from rural areas where DUP may be longer.

Abstract
There is evidence that obesity or higher body mass index is correlated with cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Recent studies have demonstrated that genetic risk factors, such as the NRG3, are correlated with both elevated BMI and reduced cognitive function. In present study, we aimed to determine whether possession of the NRG3 rs10748842 influences the correlation between elevated BMI and reduced cognitive ability in schizophrenia. To our knowledge, this has never been examined before. A total of 625 inpatients with schizophrenia and 400 controls were recruited. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was performed to assess cognitive function. We used multiple analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), analyses of covariance (ANCOVA), Pearson correlations, partial correlations, and multivariate regression analysis to test the influence of NRG3 rs10748842 on the aforementioned variables. All RBANS five sub-scores and total score were lower in patients than those in controls (all p < 0.001). Patients carrying NRG3 rs10748842 TC + CC heterozygous genotype had lower attention score compared to TT homozygous genotype (adjusted F = 4.77, p = 0.029). BMI was positively associated with language score in patients (β = 0.387, t = 2.59, p = 0.01). Interestingly, we further found positive association between BMI and language score in TT carriers (partial correlations: r = 0.13, adjusted p = 0.004; multivariate regression: β = 0.42, t = 2.66, p = 0.008), but not in CT + CC carrier (p > 0.05). Our study demonstrated that NRG3 rs10748842 was associated with cognitive impairments, especially attention performance in schizophrenia. Moreover, NRG3 rs10748842 altered the effect of BMI on cognitive impairments as measured by the RBANS language score in chronic patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract
Schizophrenia, a multisystem disorder with an unknown etiology, is associated with several immune dysfunctions, including abnormal levels of circulating cytokines. In this review, we investigated the changes of cytokines in schizophrenic patients, their connection with behavioral symptoms severity and their potential clinical implications. We also assessed the possible causative role of abnormal cytokine levels in schizophrenia pathogenesis. Based on meta-analyses, we categorized cytokines according to their changes in schizophrenic patients into four groups: (1) increased cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-1β, IL-12, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, (2) non-altered cytokines, including IL-2, IL-4, and IL-17, (3) increased or non-altered cytokines, including IL-8 and interferon (IFN)-γ, and (4) IL-10 with increased, decreased, and non-altered levels. Notably, alterations in cytokines may be variable in four different categories of SP, including first-episode and drug-naïve, first-episode and non-drug-naïve, stable chronic, and chronic in acute relapse. Furthermore, disease duration, symptoms severity, incidence of aggression, and cognitive abilities are correlated with levels of certain cytokines. Clinical implications of investigating the levels of cytokine in schizophrenic patients include early diagnosis, novel therapeutic targets development, patient stratification for choosing the best therapeutic protocol, and predicting the prognosis and treatment response. The levels of IL-6, IL-8, IFN-γ, IL-2 are related to the treatment response. The available evidence shows a potential causative role for cytokines in schizophrenia development. There is a substantial need for studies investigating the levels of cytokines before disease development and delineating the therapeutic implications of the disrupted cytokine levels in schizophrenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common clinical complication, with an underlying pathophysiology linked to heightened levels of neuroinflammation. However, it requires clarification as to whether the depth of anesthesia modulates postoperative cognitive dysfunction. This study investigated the association between depth of anesthesia and POCD in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery. METHODS A total of 120 patients aged 60 years or older who were planned for abdominal surgery under total intravenous anesthesia were included in this study. The depth of anesthesia was guided by monitoring Bispectral Index (BIS) data. All study participants completed a battery of nine neuropsychological tests before surgery and at 7 days and 3 months after surgery. POCD was calculated by using the reliable change index. Plasma concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-10, S-100β, and norepinephrine (NE) were measured. RESULTS The incidence of POCD at 7 days after surgery in the deep anesthesia group was 19.2% (10/52), which was significantly lower (p = 0.032) than the light anesthesia group 39.6% (21/53). The depth of anesthesia had no effect on POCD at 3 months after surgery (10.3% vs 14.6%, respectively, p = 0.558). Similarly, plasma levels of CRP and IL-1β in deep anesthesia group were lower than that in light anesthesia group at 7 days after surgery (p < 0.05), but not at 3 months after surgery (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences in the plasma concentration of IL-10, S-100β, and NE between the groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Deep anesthesia under total intravenous anesthesia could decrease the occurrence of short-term POCD and inhibit postoperative peripheral inflammation in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery, compared with light anesthesia.

Abstract
Background: Schizophrenia is characterized by the disruption of microstructural white matter (WM) integrity, while the pathogenesis remains unclear. Inflammation has been associated with the WM pathology in schizophrenia. Interleukin 10 (IL-10) has been proven to be related to schizophrenia in both animal and human models. The aim of this study was to explore whether peripheral IL-10 was associated with microstructural WM integrity in schizophrenia. Methods: A total of 47 patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and 49 healthy controls (HC) underwent diffusion tensor imaging and venous blood sampling. Tract-based spatial statistics was conducted to explore the differences in fractional anisotropy (FA), radial diffusivity (RD), mean diffusivity (MD), and axial diffusivity (AD) between patients and controls. A quantitative chemiluminescence assay was performed to measure peripheral IL-10 levels. General linear regression analysis using a stepwise method was applied to examine the relationship between peripheral IL-10 and diffusion measures. Results: Compared with the HC, peripheral IL-10 levels were higher and a significant reduction of FA and AD, and increase of RD and MD were observed in SZ (corrected p < 0.05). A regression analysis revealed that peripheral IL-10 was negatively correlated with FA in the right posterior thalamic radiation and left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, in SZ (β = -0.51, p = 0.01; β = -0.47, p = 0.02, respectively) but not in HC (β = -0.01, p = 0.95; β = -0.003, p = 0.98, respectively), and the differences in regression curves were significant (z = 2.50, p = 0.01; z = 2.37, p = 0.02, respectively). IL-10 was negatively connected with MD in the right parietal arcuate fasciculus (β = -0.40, p = 0.048) and body of the corpus callosum (β = -0.43, p = 0.03) in SZ, while not in HC. The magnitude of correlation in the patient and control group was different (z = 2.48, p = 0.01 and z = 2.61, p < 0.01, respectively). In addition, IL-10 was positively correlated with RD in the right parietal arcuate fasciculus in patients (β = 0.45, p = 0.04) but not in HC (β = 0.26, p = 0.94), but the correlation coefficients were not significant (z = 0.98, p = 0.32). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that elevated peripheral IL-10 levels were associated with the disruption of microstructural WM integrity in schizophrenia, supporting the notion that inflammation plays a regulatory role in the pathology of microstructural WM and is associated with schizophrenia.

Abstract
Cognitive impairments reported across psychiatric conditions (ie, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and posttraumatic stress disorder) strongly impair the quality of life of patients and the recovery of those conditions. There is therefore a great need for consideration for cognitive dysfunction in the management of psychiatric disorders. The redundant pattern of cognitive impairments across such conditions suggests possible shared mechanisms potentially leading to their development. Here, we review for the first time the possible role of inflammation in cognitive dysfunctions across psychiatric disorders. Raised inflammatory processes (microglia activation and elevated cytokine levels) across diagnoses could therefore disrupt neurobiological mechanisms regulating cognition, including Hebbian and homeostatic plasticity, neurogenesis, neurotrophic factor, the HPA axis, and the kynurenine pathway. This redundant association between elevated inflammation and cognitive alterations across psychiatric disorders hence suggests that a cross-disorder approach using pharmacological and nonpharmacological (ie, physical activity and nutrition) anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory strategies should be considered in the management of cognition in psychiatry.

Abstract
Inflammation has been demonstrated to be involved in Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis. There were evidences that the disturbance of the protective function of IL-10 gene contributed to PD. In our study, haplotype analyses were conducted of IL-10 rs1800871 and rs1800872 on 371 PD patients. Because the two SNPs exposed significant linkage disequilibrium demonstrated by Haploview software, we included 177 carriers of both rs1800871 and rs1800872 and 190 noncarriers in clinical phenotype analyses. As to nonmotor symptoms, the score of the gastrointestinal dysfunction domain in Nonmotor Symptom Scale (NMSS) was lower in the carrier group of both SNPs than in the noncarrier group in PD patients (SC: -0.198, p : 023). Other nonmotor symptoms reflected by relevant rating scales showed negative results. As to comorbidity, no significant statistical significance was observed between the two SNPs and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). In conclusion, we found less severe gastrointestinal dysfunctions of both IL-10 rs1800871 and rs1800872 carriers than noncarriers in PD.

Abstract
Recent compelling research has demonstrated a pathophysiologic role for proinflammatory cytokines of microglial origin in decreasing neurocognitive function. Psychiatric diseases are already known to have reduced cognitive function and are also associated with increased inflammation. To elaborate on these data, our study aims to investigate how a particular polymorphism of the tumor necrosis factor gene, TNF-α -1031T/C, affects neurocognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia. We recruited 905 patients with schizophrenia and 571 healthy control subjects. We employed the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) to test for neurocognitive function and the positive and negative syndrome scale to evaluate schizophrenia severity. The -1031T/C polymorphism was genotyped in both healthy controls and schizophrenic patients. Our results demonstrate that patients with the C allele (either T/C or C/C) possessed increased immediate memory index, visuospatial/constructional index, and RBANS total scores as compared to patients without it (p < .05). In healthy controls, there was no significant difference across genotypes (p > .05). Our findings demonstrate that the TNF-α -1031T/C polymorphism may not play a role in the susceptibility of schizophrenia itself, but may be involved in the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia. This suggests an important role for cytokine signaling in mediating the severity of cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this article was to perform a systematic review of studies investigating the association between peripheral levels of cytokines and C-reactive protein (CRP), cytokine gene polymorphisms and cognition in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS The following databases: PubMed, CINAHL Complete, Academic Search Complete, ERIC and Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition databases were searched according to the PRISMA guidelines. We included studies that investigated the association between peripheral levels of CRP and cytokines, cytokine gene polymorphisms and cognitive performance in schizophrenia and/or BD patients. Subsequently, quality assessment of eligible publications was performed. Results were synthesized by discussing main findings around correlations between inflammatory markers and cognition. RESULTS Most consistent results indicate worse cognitive performance in schizophrenia patients with higher CRP levels. Less consistent evidence suggests better cognitive functioning of schizophrenia patients with higher levels of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Evidence for the involvement of other cytokines in cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia is less convincing due to discordant results or scarcity of studies. Due to low number of studies, it is difficult to draw conclusions on the involvement of CRP and cytokine alterations in the development of cognitive deficits in BD. Single studies suggest the role of CRP, interleukin(IL)-1 receptor antagonist, IL-6 and TNF-α with its receptors in the development of cognitive impairment in BD. CONCLUSIONS Peripheral inflammation might be related to cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and BD. Unequivocal conclusions cannot be made due to methodological heterogeneity and low number of studies investigating particular cytokines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CD226 is a cell surface adhesion molecule expressed in the immune system and central nervous system. Although the role of CD226 in the function of immune cells has been well studied, there has been no report on the potential functional significance of CD226 in neural cells. METHODS We investigated the role of CD226 on the cognitive function and behaviors using CD226 knockout (CD226KO) and wild-type mice. The spatial learning and memory were characterized using Morris water maze test, and the behaviors were evaluated using open field and elevated plus maze tests. IL-10 expression in the hippocampus was measured using RT-PCR and ELISA. RESULTS The results showed that CD226KO mice displayed increased spatial learning and memory than the wild-type controls. We also found that genetic deletion of CD226 resulted in decreased anxiety-like behaviors. In addition, the hippocampal expression level of IL-10 was increased in the CD226KO mice compared with the WT mice. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that CD226 plays an important role in the modulation of cognition and anxiety in mice.

Abstract
Cognitive deficits have been regarded as one of the most significant clinical symptoms of depressive disorder. Accumulating evidence has shown that apolipoprotein B (ApoB) levels, which are responsible for inducing neurodegeneration, may be involved in cognitive deficits. This study examines cognitive deficits, and the correlation of serum ApoB levels with cognitive deficits of depressive disorder. 90 depressive patients and 90 healthy controls with matched age and gender were recruited. Cognition was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Serum ApoB levels in depressive patients were measured by immunoturbidimetric method. Our results showed that depressive patients had lower scores of cognition including RBANS total score and subscales of language and delayed memory (all, p < 0.001) than healthy controls after controlling for the variables. The differences in cognitive functions also passed Bonferroni corrections. Serum ApoB levels were negatively correlated with delayed memory score in depressive patients (r = −0.30, p = 0.01). Furthermore, stepwise multivariate regression analysis indicated that serum ApoB levels independently contributed to delayed memory in depressive patients (t = −2.68, p = 0.01). Our findings support that serum ApoB levels may be involved in delayed memory decline in depressive patients. Depressive patients also experience greater cognitive deficits, especially in delayed memory and language than healthy controls.

Abstract
Early life immune aberrations have strongly been associated with the risk of schizophrenia. Amongst them, inflammation induced neurodevelopmental origin has emerged as one of the widely recognized underlying mechanisms. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an important anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory cytokine. It modulates the expression of another immuno-inhibitory molecule, Human Leukocyte Antigen-G (HLA-G), predominantly expressed at the feto-maternal interface. Under physiological conditions, IL-10 and HLA-G molecules regulate the feto-maternal immune homeostasis by limiting the inflammatory states and influence the outcome of pregnancy. The aberrant expression of these molecules can cause pregnancy complications, which are known to confer strong risk to schizophrenia in the offspring. However, there is a considerable lack of information on the effect of the functional interactions between IL-10 and HLA-G on the risk of schizophrenia. We therefore examined the impact of possible correlation between IL-10 genetic variations and the plasma levels of soluble HLA-G (sHLA-G) on schizophrenia risk. Genotyping of IL10 (-592 C>A, -1082 A>G) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was performed by PCR-RFLP method in 219 schizophrenia patients and 197 healthy subjects and levels of sHLA-G were estimated by ELISA in 46 patients and 44 healthy subjects. There was no significant difference in the genotype and allele frequencies between the groups for both the IL10 SNPs analyzed. However, we observed a correlation between IL10 genetic variation and plasma levels of sHLA-G in schizophrenia patients. Patients carrying CC genotype of IL10 -592C>A polymorphism had significantly lower sHLA-G levels compared to CA and AA genotypes. Our findings suggest the impact of possible correlation between IL-10 and HLA-G on schizophrenia risk.
