Bacterial and archaeal community distribution and stabilization of anaerobic sludge in a strengthen circulation anaerobic (SCA) reactor for municipal wastewater treatment

Reason and control strategy for denitrification and anammox sludge flotation in nitrogen removal process: Mechanisms, strategies and perspectives

Anaerobic biological treatment technology, especially denitrification and anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) technology as mainstream process, played dominant role in the field of biological wastewater treatment. However, the above process was prone to sludge floating during high load operation and thereby affecting the efficient and stable operation of the system. Excessive production of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) was considered to be the main reason for anaerobic granular sludge flotation, but the summaries in this area were not comprehensive enough. In this review, the potential mechanisms of denitrification and anammox sludge floatation were discussed from the perspective of granular sludge structural characteristics, nutrient transfer, and microbial flora change respectively, and the corresponding control strategies were also summarized. Finally, this paper indicated that future research on sludge flotation should focus on reducing the negative effects of EPS in sludge particles.

Impact analysis of hydraulic residence time and dissolved oxygen on performance efficiency and microbial community in N, N-dimethylformamide wastewater treated by an AnSBR-ASBR

Suitable operating parameters are one of the key factors to efficient and stable biological wastewater treatment of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) wastewater. In this study, an improved AnSBR-ASBR reactor (anaerobic sequencing batch reactor, AnSBR, and aerobic SBR, ASBR, run in series) was used to investigated the effects of operating conditions such as hydraulic residence time (HRT), AnSBR stirring speed and ASBR dissolved oxygen (DO) for DMF wastewater treatment. When HRT decreased from 24 h to 12 h, the average removal rates of COD by the AnSBR were 34.59% and 39.54%, respectively. Meanwhile, the removal rate of NH4+-N by ASBR decreased from 88.38% to 62.81%. The DMF removal rate reached the best at 18 h and the expression of dehydrogenase was the highest in the AnSBR. The abundance of Megasphaera, the dominant sugar-degrading bacteria in the AnSBR, continued to decline due to the decrease of HRT. The relative abundance of Methanobacterium gradually increased to 80.2% with the decrease of HRT and that hydrotrophic methanogenesis dominated the methanogenic process. The HRT decrease promoted butyrate and pyruvate metabolism in anaerobic sludge, but the proportion of glycolysis and methane metabolism decreased. The AnSBR-ASBR reactor had the best operation performance when HRT was 18 h, AnSBR speed was 220 r/min, and ASBR DO content was 3-4 mg/L. This study provided an effective reference for the reasonable selection of operating parameters in the treatment of DMF-containing wastewater by the AnSBR-ASBR.

The synergistic role of ozonation and hydrolysis acidification on the enhanced pre-treatment of high-strength refractory 2-butenal manufacture wastewater: Performance, metabolism, and mechanisms

Targeted removal of three key refractory toxic organic compounds (TOMs) in 2-butenal manufacturing wastewater (2-BMW) is critical for enhancing pre-treatment by hydrolysis acidification (HA). We investigated the pre-treatment of 2-BMW with HA, coupled with ozonation in this study. Our results indicated that the removal rate of these key TOMs and the detoxification rate reached almost 100% and 46.3%, respectively, by ozonation under only 0.099 mg O3/mg chemical oxygen demand (COD). The organic load rate (OLR) reached 10.25 ± 0.43 kg COD/m3·d, and the acidification degree (AD) and detoxification efficiency reached 56.0% and 98.3%, respectively, with enhancements of 35.1% and 55.2%, respectively, compared with HA alone. The removal rate of the three key TOMs was improved by > 75%. The degradation pathways of these key TOMs were ring cleavage and ester formation by ozonation, followed by fermentation and acid production by HA. Ultimately, the synergistic role of ozonation and HA was revealed. The preferential cleavage of these key TOMs by ozonation was achieved because of their high electron cloud density and multiple reaction sites, which generated more fermentation-friendly products. The fermentation and acid production reactions may be directly involved in these products. Functional bacteria and key metabolic pathways were also enhanced by ozonation.

Effects of upward flow rate and modified biochar location on the performance and microecology of an anaerobic reactor treating kitchen waste

Increasing the value of food waste through anaerobic digestion is an attractive strategy. Meanwhile, the anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste also faces some technical challenges. In this study, four EGSB reactors were equipped with Fe-Mg-chitosan bagasse biochar at different locations, and the reflux pump flow rate was increased to change the upward flow rate of the reactor. The effects of adding modified biochar at different locations under different upward flow rate on the efficacy and microecology of anaerobic reactors treating kitchen waste were investigated. Results showed that Chloroflexi was the dominant microorganism when the modified biochar was added to the lower, middle, and upper parts of the reactor and mixed in the reactor, accounting for 54%, 56%, 58%, and 47%, respectively, on day 45. With the increased upward flow rate, the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi increased, while Proteobacteria and Firmicutes decreased. It was worth noting that the best COD removal effect was achieved when the anaerobic reactor upward flow rate was v2 = 0.6 m/h and the modified biochar was added in the upper part of the reactor, during which the average COD removal rate reached 96%. In addition, mixing modified biochar throughout the reactor while increasing the upward flow rate provided the greatest stimulus for the secretion of tryptophan and aromatic proteins in the sludge extracellular polymeric substances. The results provided a certain technical reference for improving the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste and scientific support for the application of modified biochar to the anaerobic digestion process.

Dispersion assisted pretreatment for enhanced anaerobic biodegradability and biogas recovery -strategies and applications

Disperser assisted homogenization is a promising mechanical based disintegration process to improve the substrate biodegradability and biogas recovery from biomass. During dispersion, the extent of liquefaction relies on the dispersion parameters and biomass properties. Hence, assessment of the optimal parameters varies with type of disperser and biomass. Dispersion assisted homogenization of some biomass such as sludge is not only studied in lab scale but also investigated in full scale plants providing positive outcome. For instance, the large-scale investigation of disperser homogenization has attained nearly 40-50 percent increment in bioenergy recovery. However, research gaps in terms of energy and cost efficiency still exists. This review paper outlines the impact of disperser parameters, its efficiency in biomass disintegration and biogas recovery. It has been proposed to combine homogenization process in the bioenergy generation to investigate the energy and cost efficiency of the entire process.

Underlying function regulators of anaerobic granular sludge: Starvation and dormancy

Anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) is the core of anaerobic granular sludge bed system. In this study, the effect and its mechanism of stopping substrate supply on function of AnGS were investigated. The cutoff of exogenous substrate supply triggered AnGS to enter the dormant state. Some methanization microorganisms sporulated. The number and activity of methanization microorganisms based on 16S rDNA and 16S rRNA/16S rDNA ratio declined and stayed at 45.5% and 0.06% (bacteria), 48.7% and 0.39% (archaea) of the initial vegetative value, respectively. The resuming of exogenous substrate supply promoted AnGS to restore the vegetative state. The spores disappeared. The specific methanization activity of AnGS returned to the original level of 35.82 mL-CH4/g-VSS·d, but the delay time for gas production (DTGS) was prolonged from 9.54 to 18.04 h (0-132 d). The dormancy of methanization microorganisms was the main cause for the fluctuation of apparent function and the stability of intrinsic function of AnGS under starvation stress. The dormancy stabilized the structure and sustained the methanization community of AnGS via the reduction of EPS (structure binder/energy reserve) consumption.

A pilot-scale study of granule-based anaerobic reactors for biogas recovery from municipal wastewater under sub-mesophilic conditions

The influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT of 3-5 h) and temperature (20-25 °C) on performance and microbial dynamics of two pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors with different granule size distribution (UASB1 = 3-4 mm and UASB2 = 1-2 mm) were investigated for 217 days. Increasing the HRT to 5 h even at a lower temperature of 20 °C enhanced COD removal and biogas production with average of 59 ± 16% (up to 85%) and 73 ± 9 L/(m³·d) (up to 102 L/(m³·d)) for UASB1; 63 ± 16% (up to 85%) and 75 ± 9 L/(m³·d) (up to 90 L/(m³·d)) for UASB2, respectively. This is explained by sufficient contact time between microorganisms and substrate. Acetoclastic methanogenic activity was higher in UASB1 because Methanosaetaceae (produces methane from acetate) dominated (64 ± 4%). However, Methanoregulaceae (29 ± 3%) and Methanomicrobiales_unassigned (20 ± 6%) which produce methane from H₂/CO₂ and formate were significant in UASB2. The extent of change in the microbial dynamics with HRT and temperature was more obvious in the smaller granule reactor.

Integration of CW-MFC and anaerobic granular sludge to explore the intensified ammonification-nitrification-denitrification processes for nitrogen removal

The integration of constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) and anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) is an important way to promote its ammonification efficiency and decrease the land use scale. This study explored the integration of CW-MFC and AGS for nitrogen removal via the intensified ammonification-nitrification-denitrification processes with initial NH₃-N, NO₃-N, Org-N and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations of 10.5, 13.8, 21.4, and 45.7 mg L^-1 in wastewater. Two reactors with AGS inoculated with a separated area (R1) and directly inoculated into gravel substrate (R2) were designed, respectively. Results showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency could reach 85% in R1 and 81% in R2, and the conversion of Org-N to NH₃-N and NO₃-N to gaseous nitrogen were 80% and 90%, respectively. Although the conversion efficiency of NH₃-N to NO₂-N/NO₃-N via nitrification process was only 18%, it could reach 45%, 94%, and 98% with the aeration rates of 50-, 100-, and 200-mL min^-1. According to microstructural property and microbial community analyses, the separation gravel substrate and AGS areas in R1 availed for stable particle size of AGS, archaeal diversity, and metabolic activity even with a 1.5 times daily wastewater treatment capacity than that of R2. Overall, although the intensified ammonification-nitrification-denitrification processes for nitrogen removal could be achieved with supplementary aeration, further investigation is still needed to explore other substrate materials and high CW-MFC/AGS volume ratio for intensified nitrification process in CW-MFC associated with AGS.

Efficient reduction of reactive black 5 and Cr(Ⅵ) by a newly isolated bacterium of Ochrobactrum anthropi

It is important to obtain bacteria with the ability for reduction of dyes and Cr(Ⅵ) since dyes and Cr(Ⅵ) are often co-exist in textile wastewater. In this study, a new strain belonging to Ochrobactrum anthropi was isolated from textile wastewater, and could efficiently reduce Reactive Black 5 (RB 5) and Cr(Ⅵ). The results showed the degradation efficiency of RB 5 could achieve 100% and reduction efficiency of Cr(Ⅵ) was up to 80% within 3 days at initial RB 5 and Cr(Ⅵ) concentration of 400 mg/L and 20 mg/L. Mn²⁺ and Cu²⁺ could enhance the removal of RB 5 and Cr(Ⅵ), respectively. Glycerin, as electron donor, improved reduction efficiencies of RB 5 and Cr(Ⅵ). In addition, reduction mechanisms were further investigated. The results demonstrated that decreasing of RB 5 and Cr(Ⅵ) concentration were mainly through extracellular bioreduction rather than by adsorption. The FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the O‒H, C‒C and C‒H groups on the cell surface might be involved in the reduction of RB 5 and Cr(Ⅵ). The information gives useful insights into understanding of how the bacterium reduce RB 5 and Cr(Ⅵ). The results indicated that the strain had excellent application prospect for treating industrial wastewater.

Performance of DOuble Circulation Anaerobic Sludge bed reactor: Biomass self-balance

The calcification of Anaerobic Granular Sludge is a serious problem in the application of anaerobic methanization biotechnology. Regular replacement of calcified sludge with exogenous sludge is an effective method, but it is costly and troublesome. A new DOuble Circulation Anaerobic Sludge bed reactor was developed for the enhanced production of endogenous sludge to self-balance the discharge of calcified sludge. The sludge washout rate was demonstrated to fall by 45% and the sludge proliferation rate was shown to rise by 230%, offsetting the regular discharge of calcified sludge. The zoogloea in 100 μm dimension was revealed to be the intermediate component of sludge. The sludge proliferation mode was proposed as follows: (i) Growth of sludge; (ii) Self-cracking of sludge to release fragmental sludge; (iii) Migration of fragmental sludge by self-floatation; (iv) Accumulation of suspended sludge in the sedimentation chamber; (v) Re-granulation of suspended sludge with the aid of Venturi effect.

Effect of circulation and micro-aeration on sludge characteristics and microbial community in an ABR for treating traditional Chinese medicine wastewater

The effects of circulation reflux and micro-aeration on the performance of a modified anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) for treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater were evaluated. The characteristics of anaerobic sludge and microbial community structure in the modified ABR were also investigated. The results indicated that with conditions of reflux ratio of 1, reflux ratio of 2, reflux ratio of 2 with micro-aeration, and reflux ratio of 3, the modified ABR achieved an average COD removal efficiency of 90%, 87.7%, 87.8%, and 88.4%, respectively. In addition, the NH₃-N average removal efficiency was 45.1%, 50%, 55.9%, and 55.4%, respectively. The analysis of excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra of soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) showed that there were tyrosine-like, aromatic protein-like, and coenzyme F₄₂₀ substances in the sludge. The EPS were analysed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which showed that aromatic compounds were partially degraded, while the protein and polysaccharide compounds increased in each compartment of the modified ABR. Interestingly, the microbial community of anaerobic sludge analysis results showed that Chloroflexi was the dominant in the first, third and fourth compartments. Meanwhile, Levilinea and Methanothrix were the dominant species in the first and third compartments at the genus level.

Deciphering the archaeal communities in tree rhizosphere of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau

BACKGROUND

The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau represents one of the most important component of the terrestrial ecosystem and a particularly vulnerable region, which harbouring complex and diverse microbiota. The knowledge about their underground microorganisms have largely been studied, but the characteristics of rhizosphere microbiota, particularly archaeal communities remains unclear.

RESULTS

High-throughput Illumina sequencing was used to investigate the rhizosphere archaeal communities of two native alpine trees (Picea crassifolia and Populus szechuanica) living on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The archaeal community structure in rhizospheres significantly differed from that in bulk soil. Thaumarchaeota was the dominant archaeal phylum in all soils tested (92.46-98.01%), while its relative abundance in rhizospheres were significantly higher than that in bulk soil. Ammonium nitrogen, soil organic matter, available phosphorus and pH were significantly correlated with the archaeal community structure, and the deterministic processes dominated the assembly of archaeal communities across all soils. In addition, the network structures of the archaeal community in the rhizosphere were less complex than they were in the bulk soil, and an unclassified archaeal group (Unclassified_k_norank) was identified as the keystone species in all archaeal networks.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the structure, assembly and co-occurrence patterns of archaeal communities are significantly affected by the presence of roots of alpine trees living on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. This study provides new insights into our understanding of archaeal communities in vulnerable ecosystems.

Intestinal microbiota composition in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: establishment of bacterial and archaeal communities analyses

Background:

Emerging evidences have indicated that the composition of gut microbiota was significantly influenced by central nervous system diseases. The digestion and metabolism disturbances of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) might be strongly associated with ALS; however, this has rarely been evaluated in these populations. This study was to evaluate bacterial and archaeal composition of gut flora and the corresponding metabolism performance of these micro-organisms in fecal samples of patients with ALS.

Methods:

A comparative study was performed on the intestinal microbiota from eight patients with ALS and eight healthy individuals at Huadong Hospital during November 2017 to April 2018; meanwhile, the metabolite concentrations of human endotoxin, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), NO₂-N/NO₃-N, and γ-aminobutyric acid were also evaluated by spectrophotometry methods. The correlations between intestinal microbiota and metabolite concentration were compared between the two groups using one-way analysis of variance; the relative abundance of beneficial and harmful micro-organisms in fecal samples was also analyzed.

Results:

In general, the richness and evenness of bacterial and archaeal communities of healthy individuals were healthier than that of patients with ALS. The phylum Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, genus Methanobrevibacter showed an enhancive tendency in patients with ALS, whereas the relative abundance of beneficial micro-organisms (genera Faecalibacterium and Bacteroides) presented a significant decrease tendency in patients with ALS. In addition, the average concentrations of human endotoxin, SCFA, NO₂-N/NO₃-N, and γ-aminobutyric acid in patients with ALS and healthy individuals were 64.2 vs. 65.3 EU/mL, 57.5 vs. 55.3 μg/mL, 5.7 vs. 5.3 ng/mL, and 6.1 vs. 5.4 μmol/L, respectively, indicating that the digestion and metabolism functions of gastrointestinal tract of patients might decline with this disease.

Conclusions:

The relative abundance of beneficial and harmful micro-organisms respectively showed decrease and increase tendency in patients with ALS.

Expanded granular sludge blanket reactor treatment of food waste at ambient temperature: Analysis of nitrogen compositions and microbial community structure

The influent and effluent nitrogen compositions of an expanded granular sludge blanket (EGSB) reactor employed for treating food waste (FW) operated under ambient temperature was evaluated. Additionally, dynamic changes in the bacterial community structures and its metabolic functions were investigated. Results show that the EGSB reactor had a good effect on FW disposal and well resistance to variations in the organic loading rate. Furthermore, the COD concentration in the influent increased to about 10,000 mg/L and the COD removal rate stabilized at about 95%. The dissolved ammonia nitrogen (d-ammonia) content was the largest, accounting for approximately 70-80% of the dissolved nitrogen in the effluent. The amount of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) decreased by about 25%-33%. Amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism decreased at high organic loading rate (OLR). Meanwhile, the abundance of Methanothrix increased from 30.82% to 70.25%, whereas Methanobacterium decreased from 66.14% to 14.49%.

Deactivation mechanism of calcified anaerobic granule: Space occupation and pore blockage

Calcification and deactivation of high rate sludge bed reactors is a common and serious engineering problem in the application of anaerobic bioreactor. In this study, the characteristics and deactivation mechanism of calcified anaerobic granules were investigated. The results showed that the calcium content of calcified anaerobic granules was ten times higher than that of control anaerobic granules. A large part of the calcium accumulated in the center of anaerobic granules in the form of calcite, and a small part of the calcium distributed in the outer layer of anaerobic granules in the form of Ca-P deposit. The calcium core occupied a large space which was available for the functional microorganisms. The calcium salts deposited in the outer layer of granular sludge which led to the significant reduction of macropore volume. The porosity of calcified anaerobic granules decreased by 13% compared with that of control anaerobic granules, causing generally the decline of methanogenic activity (for example, by 13% at influent organic concentration of 6.6 g COD L^-1). The substrate gradient created by methanation of organic salts, including organic calcium salts, was deduced to be the driving force of anaerobic granule calcification, while the gradual accumulation of calcium salts in anaerobic granules was deduced to be the dominant factor for the decline of anaerobic granule activity.

The study of structure of anaerobic granules and methane producing pathways of pilot-scale UASB reactors treating municipal wastewater under sub-mesophilic conditions

This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the methane producing pathways and the characteristics of anaerobic granules treating municipal wastewater. For this purpose, two pilot scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors with different granule size distribution (1-2 mm and 3-4 mm) were investigated at operating temperatures of 20 °C and 28 °C for 239 days. There was an increased and stable biogas production when temperature was elevated to 28 °C likely due to reduction in methane solubility. Larger granules had multi-layered internal microstructures with higher acetoclastic methanogenic activities (250-437 mL CH₄ g^-1 VS d^-1) than smaller granules (150-260 mL CH₄ g^-1 VS d^-1). The relative abundance of acetoclastic methanogens of larger granules was higher, confirming acetoclastic methane producing pathway was more prominent. However, there was no significant difference in the performance of the two reactors because they were operating below their capacities in terms of organic loading rate to volatile solids ratio.

Bioenergy generation and degradation pathway of phenanthrene and anthracene in a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell with an anode amended with nZVI

The frequent occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic environments is of great concern because of their teratogenicity, toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity to plants, animals and human beings. In this study the bioelectricity generation, biodegradation, phytoextraction and substrate adsorption of phenanthrene and anthracene in a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) were investigated with an anode electrode amended with or without biochar-nZVI. During a 182-day operation period, the average removal efficiency for phenanthrene and anthracene ranged from 88.5% to 96.4%. The concentration of phenanthrene in roots, stems and laminas of T. orientalis was 14.9, 3.9 and 2.3 ng g^-1 respectively, while that of anthracene was 22.2, 3.1 and 1.3 ng g^-1, respectively. In addition, the application of nZVI was conducive to bioelectricity generation and organic compound degradation in the CW-MFC reactor. The distribution of the bacterial community indicated that the relative abundance of Bacillus, Paludibacter, Desulfovibrio and Lactococcus with a degradation capability for refractory organics was significantly increased. Especially the genus Bacillus for excreting catalase became more abundant. The results of our study indicate how to promote bioelectricity generation and biodegradation of refractory organic compounds in a CW-MFC by improving the culture conditions for bacteria.

Performance and microbial protein expression during anaerobic treatment of alkali-decrement wastewater using a strengthened circulation anaerobic reactor

Herein, a strengthened circulation anaerobic (SCA) reactor was employed for the treatment of actual alkali-decrement wastewater. The degradation mechanism of polyester oligomers and the relationship between the treatment performance and microbial community structure were systematically investigated using various advanced techniques. Results suggest that the accumulation of volatile fatty acids has an inhibitory effect on methanogenic activity. Molecular weight distributions suggest that only incomplete degradation of oligomers was achieved, due to acetogenic inhibition in the lower part of the SCA reactor. Meta-proteomic approach analysis revealed that the methanogens containing heterodisulfide reductase were the primary species involved in methane metabolism. Based on these findings, a possible degradation mechanism for alkali-decrement wastewater in the SCA reactor is proposed. This high-performance anaerobic reactor could be further scaled-up and optimized to serve as a promising and effective unit for the treatment of other refractory industrial wastewaters.

Granulation process in an expanded granular sludge blanket (EGSB) reactor for domestic sewage treatment: Impact of extracellular polymeric substances compositions and evolution of microbial population

In this study, an expanded granular sludge blanket (EGSB) reactor was used for the treatment of low-strength domestic sewage and the sludge granulation process was systematically investigated. At an optimized hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 h, up-flow velocity (V_up) of 1.9 m/h, and organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.16 kg COD/m³/d, the average COD removal efficiency was 71.5 ± 2.3%. Completely granular sludge can be observed after 107 d of continuous operation. Analysis of the distribution and composition of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) indicates that the tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) content shows an increasing trend, while the loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) content did not significantly alter after the granular sludge was formed. The three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix technique (3D-EEM) confirms that aromatic protein-like substances are of key importance to sludge granulation. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicates that the metabolism shifted from hydrogenotrophic (Methanobaterium) to aceticlastic methanogens (Methanosaeta) during sludge granulation.

Treatment of industrial dyeing wastewater with a pilot-scale strengthened circulation anaerobic reactor

We developed a pilot-scale strengthened circulation anaerobic (SCA) reactor (with an effective volume of 27 m³) and applied to the treatment of industrial textile wastewater. The treatment performance and the working mechanism were studied systematically and the key operational parameters were identified. The results demonstrated that a stable and excellent chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency of 62.7% and a maximum chromaticity removal efficiency of 73.5% were obtained at an optimal reflux ratio of 4. Interestingly, the bio-degradability was evidently improved after the SCA reactor treatment. The high throughput sequencing analysis indicated that the diversity of the bacteria or archaebacteria before the treatment was slightly higher than that after the treatment, which may be attributed to the production of certain toxic intermediates and/or characteristic pollutants during the treatment. Enzyme activity test and COD removal show that numerous microorganisms still maintained active in the anaerobic granular sludge even in a severe environment.

Correlating microbial community structure with operational conditions in biological aerated filter reactor for efficient nitrogen removal of municipal wastewater

In this study, the combination of strengthen circulation anaerobic (SCA) and biological aerated filter (BAF) reactor was employed to treat municipal wastewater. Different reflux percentages or gas/water ratios were selected for evaluating the removal performance of contaminants in SCA-BAF system and sequential nitrification and denitrification process in BAF reactor. In general, reflux percentage (200%) and gas/water ratio (3:1) were a relatively suitable operational condition for BAF reactor. The COD, NH₃-N, TN concentrations of effluents collected from BAF reactor varied in the ranges of 18-80, 0.2-7.2, 9.1-33.0 mg L^-1, respectively. A higher NO₃-N concentration in effluents of BAF reactor resulted from the lack of organic carbon resource in wastewater. High throughput sequencing analysis indicated that different nitrification and denitrification bacteria thrived in the BAF reactor. The DO, NO₂-N and NO₃-N concentrations showed a strong correlation with Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas in bacterial samples outlet (c and e) under gas/water ratio of 3:1.
