Abstract
Petrochemical resources are non-renewable, which has impeded the development of synthetic polymers. The poor degradability of synthetic polymers poses substantial environmental pressure. Additionally, the high cost of synthetic biopolymers with excellent degradation performance limits their widespread application. Thus, it is crucial to seek green, sustainable, low-cost polymers as alternatives to petrochemical-based synthetic polymers and synthetic biopolymers. Chitin is a natural and renewable biopolymer discovered in crustacean shells, insect exoskeletons, and fungal cell walls. Chitin chains consist of crystalline and amorphous regions. Note that various treatments can be employed to remove the amorphous region, enhancing the crystallinity of chitin. Chitin nanowhiskers are a high crystallinity nanoscale chitin product with a high aspect ratio, a large surface area, adjustable surface morphology, and biocompatibility. They discover widespread applications in biomedicine, environmental treatment, food packaging, and biomaterials. Various methods can be utilized for preparing chitin nanowhiskers, including chemical, ionic liquids, deacetylation, and mechanical methods. However, developing an environmentally friendly preparation process remains a big challenge for expanding their applications in different materials and large-scale production. This article comprehensively analyzes chitin nanowhiskers' preparation strategies and their drawbacks. It also highlights the extensive application in different materials and various fields, besides the potential for commercial application.

Abstract
Metal and metal oxide nanocomposites have unique properties and are promising for antibacterial and anticancer applications. In this work, we aimed to highlight the relationship between the biosynthesis ways of silver and gold-doped zinc oxide nanocomposites and their functions as anticancer on cell lines (MCF-7 and HepG2). The propolis was used to biosynthesize four different nanoparticles with the same components, including zinc, gold and silver. The nanocomposites were characterized using various techniques, including ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and cytotoxicity assays. The result of this study showed that formed nanocomposites have a similar level of Zn, Au, and Ag, ranging from 23-34%, 2-6%, and 2-3%, respectively. In addition, adding the components simultaneously produces the fastest color change, and the fabricated nanoparticles have spherical shapes with different layers. In addition, the prepared nanoparticles influenced the cell viability of the cancer cell lines, with the most effective one when Zn, Au, and Ag were added spontaneously to form a nanocomposite called (All) with IC50 of 24.5 µg/mL for MCF7 cells and 29.1 µg/mL for HepG2 cells. Thus, the study illustrates that the preparation of nanocomposite generated through green synthesis with different methods significantly affects the structure and function and may improve the synthesis of nanocomposite to be developed into an efficacious therapeutic agent for cancers. In addition, this study opens the door toward a novel track in the field of nanocomposites as it links the synthesis with structure and function. Further anti-cancer properties, as well as animal testing are needed for those nanocomposites.

Abstract
Packaging plays a crucial role in protecting food by providing excellent mechanical properties as well as effectively blocking water vapor, oxygen, oil, and other contaminants. The low degradation of widely used petroleum-based plastics leads to environmental pollution and poses health risks. This has drawn interest in renewable biopolymers as sustainable alternatives. The seafood industry generates significant waste that is rich in bioactive substances like chitin, chitosan, gelatins, and alginate, which can replace synthetic polymers in food packaging. Although biopolymers offer biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, their films often lack mechanical and barrier properties compared with synthetic polymer films. This comprehensive review discusses the chemical structure, characteristics, and extraction methods of biopolymers derived from seafood waste and their usage in the packaging area as reinforcement or base materials to guide researchers toward successful plastics replacement and commercialization. Our review highlights recent advancements in improving the thermal durability, mechanical strength, and barrier properties of seafood waste-derived packaging, explores the mechanisms behind these improvements, and briefly mentions the antimicrobial activities and mechanisms gained from these biopolymers. In addition, the remaining challenges and future directions for using seafood waste-derived biopolymers for packaging are discussed. This review aims to guide ongoing efforts to develop seafood waste-derived biopolymer films that can ultimately replace traditional plastic packaging.

Abstract
Color indicator films incorporating aronia extract powder (AEP) and biopolymers like agar, carrageenan, and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) were developed to monitor kimchi freshness. AEP-containing films showed strong UV-barrier properties, and reduced light transmittance by 99.12 % for agar, 98.86 % for carrageenan, and 98.67 % for CNF-based films. All AEP-films exhibited high sensitivity to pH changes and vapor exposure to ammonia and acetic acid. Color change notably influenced by the polymer type, particularly evident with ammonia vapor exposure, especially in the AEP/carrageenan film. The chemical structure and thermal stability of the biopolymers remained unchanged after AEP-addition. Tensile strength increased by 24.2 % for AEP/CNF but decreased by 19.4 % for AEP/agar and 24.3 % for AEP/carrageenan films. AEP-containing films displayed strong antioxidant activity, with 99 % free radical scavenging in ABTS and ~ 80 % in DPPH assays. Alkalized AEP-indicator films were more effective in detecting color changes during kimchi packaging tests. Among the labels, alkalized AEP/agar film showed the most obvious color change from green-gray (fresh kimchi, pH 5.5, acidity 0.48 %) to pale brown (optimal fermentation, pH 4.6, acidity 0.70 %), and pale violet-brown (over-fermented, pH 3.80, acidity 1.35 %). Alkalized AEP-indicator films offer promising real-time detection of packed fermented foods like kimchi.

Abstract
Nanomaterial-based wound dressings have been extensively studied for the treatment of both minor and life-threatening tissue injuries. These wound dressings must possess several crucial characteristics, such as tissue compatibility, non-toxicity, appropriate biodegradability to facilitate wound healing, effective antibacterial activity to prevent infection, and adequate physical and mechanical strength to withstand repetitive dynamic forces that could potentially disrupt the healing process. Nevertheless, the development of nanostructured wound dressings that incorporate various functional micro- and nanomaterials in distinct architectures, each serving specific purposes, presents significant challenges. In this study, we successfully developed a novel multifunctional wound dressing based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fibrous membranes produced by solution-blow spinning (SBS) and electrospinning. The PLA-based membranes underwent surface modifications aimed at tailoring their properties for utilization as effective wound dressing platforms. Initially, beta-chitin whiskers were deposited onto the membrane surface through filtration, imparting hydrophilic character. Afterward, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were incorporated onto the beta-chitin layer using a spray deposition method, resulting in platforms with antimicrobial properties against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Cytotoxicity studies demonstrated the biocompatibility of the membranes with the neonatal human dermal fibroblast (HDFn) cell line. Moreover, bilayer membranes exhibited a high surface area and porosity (> 80%), remarkable stability in aqueous media, and favorable mechanical properties, making them promising candidates for application as multifunctional wound dressings.

Abstract
Current trends in food packaging systems are toward biodegradable polymer materials, especially the food biopolymer films made from polysaccharides and proteins, but they are limited by mechanical strength and barrier properties. Nano-chitin has great economic value as a highly efficient functional and reinforcing material. The combination of nano-chitin and food biopolymers offers good opportunities to prepare biodegradable packaging films with enhanced physicochemical and functional properties. This review aims to give the latest advances in nano-chitin preparation strategies and its uses in food biopolymer film reinforcement and applications. The first part systematically introduces various preparation methods for nano-chitin, including chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) and chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs). The nano-chitin reinforced biodegradable films based on food biopolymers, such as polysaccharides and proteins, are described in the second part. The last part provides an overview of the current applications of nano-chitin reinforced food biopolymer films in the food industry.

Abstract
Chitin-based nanoparticles are polysaccharide materials that can be produced from a waste stream of the seafood industry: crustacean shells. These nanoparticles have received exponentially growing attention, especially in the field of medicine and agriculture owing to their renewable origin, biodegradability, facile modification, and functionality adjustment. Due to their exceptional mechanical strength and high surface area, chitin-based nanoparticles are ideal candidates for reinforcing biodegradable plastics to ultimately replace traditional plastics. This review discusses the preparation methods for chitin-based nanoparticles and their applications. Special focus is on biodegradable plastics for food packaging making use of the features that can be created by the chitin-based nanoparticles.

Abstract
In this paper, gamma-irradiation was successfully used to intensify the yield of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) produced by the fungus Alternaria tenuissima as a sustainable and green process. The obtained data showed that 500 Gy of gamma-irradiation increased ZnONPs' yield to approximately four-fold. The synthesized ZnONPs were then exploited to develop active Carboxymethyl Cellulose films by casting method at two different concentration of ZnONPs 0.5% and 1.0%. The physicochemical, mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the prepared films were evaluated. The incorporation of ZnONPs in the Carboxymethyl Cellulose films had significantly decreased solubility (from 78.31% to 66.04% and 59.72%), water vapor permeability (from 0.475 g m-2 to 0.093 g m-2 and 0.026 g m-2), and oxygen transfer rate (from 24.7 × 10-2 to 2.3 × 10-2 and 1.8 × 10-2) of the respective prepared films. Meanwhile, tensile strength (from 183.2 MPa to 203.34 MPa and 235.94 MPa), elongation (from 13.0% to 62.5% and 83.7%), and Yang's modulus (from 325.344 to 1410.0 and 1814.96 MPa) of these films were increased. Moreover, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against several human and plant pathogens the prepared of Carboxymethyl Cellulose-ZnONPs films were significantly increased. In conclusion, the prepared Carboxymethyl Cellulose-ZnONPs films showed enhanced activities in comparison with Carboxymethyl Cellulose film without NPs. With these advantages, the fabricated Carboxymethyl Cellulose-ZnONPs films in this study could be effectively utilized as protective edible coating films of food products.

Abstract
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films containing lysozyme (Lys) were prepared in this study and changes in properties of the films were investigated. Enhancement in mechanical properties was observed with increased Lys, maximum (0.05 g/100 mL) reached to 39.07 MPa (TS) and 25.04 % (EAB). Meanwhile, water resistance ability improved, the minimum (0.05 g/100 mL) reached to 0.42 g·mm·(m2·h·KPa)-1, 84.62 % of pure CMC film. Thermogravimetric test showed better thermal stability of films. Scanning electron microscope illustrated that few cracks on surface of films. Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy supported that more intermolecular hydrogen between Lys and CMC was formed with increased Lys, yet keeping increasing formed less intermolecular hydrogen. X-ray Diffraction observed the aggregated Lys by crystal structure. Antibacterial test showed an inhibitory effect on two common food-borne pathogens. Weight loss experiment indicated that films reduced the dry consumption of meat. Overall, the modification of CMC film by adding Lys was effective.

Abstract
Interest in the use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in surface coatings and films has increased as its incorporation can significantly improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of coatings and film solutions. In an effort to produce green or eco-friendly products, the potential use of ZnO NPs biosynthesized from natural resources to replace conventional petroleum-derived polymers has been investigated. This review provides an insight into the growing trend of incorporating ZnO NPs into synthetic or semi-synthetic or bio-based polymeric materials via different synthesis methods as well as its characteristics and potential applications in surface coatings and films. The antimicrobial potential of ZnO NPs to inhibit the growth of various types of microorganisms as well as its use in surface coatings or films to impart antimicrobial activities that prevent the spread of microorganisms, especially the COVID-19 virus, was also discussed.

Abstract
Fully bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) blends plasticized with tributyrin (TB), and their nanocomposite based on chitin nanoparticles (ChNPs) was developed using melt mixing followed by a compression molding process. The combination of PHB and ChNPs had an impact on the crystallinity of the plasticized PLA matrix, thus improving its oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties as well as displaying a UV light-blocking effect. The addition of 2 wt% of ChNP induced an improvement on the initial thermal degradation temperature and the overall migration behavior of blends, which had been compromised by the presence of TB. All processed materials were fully disintegrated under composting conditions, suggesting their potential application as fully biodegradable packaging materials.

Abstract
This study presents the isolation, characterization, and kinetic analyses of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from date palm waste in the United Arab Emirates. After bleaching date palm stem waste with acidified NaClO2 and delignification via NaOH treatments, cellulose was extracted. Mineral acid hydrolysis (62 wt % H2SO4) was performed at 45 °C for 45 min to produce crystalline nanocellulose. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and chemical composition analysis confirmed the removal of noncellulosic constituents. The crystallinity index increased gradually with chemical treatments, according to the obtained X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry results revealed that the CNC has high thermal stability. The Coats-Redfern method was used to determine the kinetic parameters. The kinetic analysis confirmed that CNC has more activation energy than cellulose and thus confirms its compact and resistive crystalline structure. This has been attributable to the stronger hydrogen bonding in CNC crystalline domains than that in cellulose crystalline domains. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that lignin and hemicellulose were eliminated after chemical pretreatments, and CNC with a rodlike shape was obtained after hydrolysis. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy confirmed the nanoscale of crystalline cellulose. ζ potential analysis indicated that the CNC afforded a stable suspension (-29.27 mV), which is less prone to flocculation. Kinetic analyses of cellulose and cellulose nanocrystals isolated from date palm waste are useful for making composites and designing selective pyrolysis reactors.

Abstract
The development of nanocellulose fibril (NCF)-based films for use in food packaging has aroused tremendous attention because of their good biodegradability. In this work, NCFs isolated from bamboo parenchyma cell were used to fabricate the composite film with embedded silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Results demonstrate that the low content of AgNPs, especially at content of 0.1 wt% in the composite film could slightly improve the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composite film by about 11.0%, owing to the reduced thickness of cellulose crystallites and decreased amount of adsorbed water, as well as the increment in crystallinity and the hydrogen-bond intensity confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurement and Fourier transform infrared spectra. On the other hand, high content of AgNPs could enhance antimicrobial activity and thermal stability while showed negligible negative effect on tensile properties. Specifically, the maximum inhibition zone of the composite film (with AgNPs content of 0.1 wt%) was 13.5 ± 0.8 mm against Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) and 7.5 ± 0.3 mm against Escherichia coli (E. coli). The strong antimicrobial activity of NCF-based films highlights their potential as a biodegradable food packaging material.

Abstract
Nanomaterials, and in particular metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), have significantly contributed to the production of healthier, safer, and higher-quality foods and food packaging with special properties, such as greater mechanical strength, improved gas barrier capacity, increased water repellency and ability to inhibit microbial contamination, ensuring higher quality and longer product shelf life. MNPs can also be incorporated into chemical and biological sensors, enabling the design of fast and sensitive monitoring devices to assess food quality, from freshness to detection of allergens, food-borne pathogens or toxins. This review summarizes recent developments in the use of MNPs in the field of food science and technology. Additionally, a brief overview of MNP synthesis and characterization techniques is provided, as well as of the toxicity, biosafety and regulatory issues of MNPs in the agricultural, feed and food sectors.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistant microorganisms have become an enormous global challenge, and are predicted to cause hundreds of millions of deaths. Therefore, the search for novel/alternative antimicrobial agents is a grand global challenge. Cellulose is an abundant biopolymer with the advantages of low cost, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. With the recent growth of nanotechnology and nanomedicine, numerous researchers have investigated nanofibril cellulose to try to develop an anti-bacterial biomaterial. However, nanofibril cellulose has no inherent antibacterial activity, and therefore cannot be used on its own. To empower cellulose with anti-bacterial properties, new efficient nanomaterials have been designed based on cellulose-based nanofibrils as potential wound dressings, food packaging, and for other antibacterial applications. In this review we summarize reports concerning the therapeutic potential of cellulose-based nanofibrils against various bacterial infections.

Abstract
Safe coating formulated from biopolymer can be an alternative for better packaging for fruits. Among biopolymers used for safe coating, polysaccharides attracted more attention due to its biocompatibility and edibility. However, polysaccharide-based materials have weaknesses such as low water barrier and mechanical properties which result in lower capability on preserving the coated fruits. Hence, the incorporation of nanoparticles (NPs) such as zinc oxide (ZnO) is expected to increase the ability of polysaccharide-based coating for the enhancement of fruit shelf life. In this review paper, the basic information and the latest updates on the incorporation of ZnO NPs into the polysaccharide-based safe coating for fruit are presented. Various research has investigated polysaccharide-ZnO nanocomposite safe coating to prolong the shelf life of fruits. The polysaccharides used include chitosan, alginate, carrageenan, cellulose, and pectin. Overall, polysaccharide-ZnO nanocomposites can improve the shelf life of fruits by reducing weight loss, maintaining firmness, reducing the ripening process, reducing respiration, reducing the oxidation process, and inhibiting microbial growth. Finally, the challenges and potential of ZnO NPs as an active agent in the safe coating application are also discussed.

Abstract
Nanocomposite films of soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS)/nano zinc oxide (nZnO) reinforced with microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) were developed by solvent casting method. The structure, optical, barrier, thermal, surface wettability, mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity of the SSPS/MFC, SSPS/nZnO and SSPS/nZnO/MFC nanocomposite films were evaluated. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra indicated interactions between SSPS and the nano-fillers. The nanocomposite films containing MFC showed improved tensile strength, stiffness, ultraviolet (UV) light barrier property, thermal stability and water resistance when compared with the neat SSPS film. The nZnO-incorporated nanocomposite films exhibited good antimicrobial activity against E. coli and B. subtlis. Overall, the MFC-reinforced SSPS/nZnO nanocomposite films possessed desirable characteristics to be considered as potential candidates for antimicrobial packaging and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is widely used in biomedical applications, engineering sciences, and food technology. The application of nanocompounds play a pivotal role in food protection, preservation, and increasing its shelf life. The changing lifestyle, use of pesticides, and biological and/or chemical contaminants present in food directly affect its quality. Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) are useful to develop products with antimicrobial activity and with the potential to improve shelf life of food and food products. Due to the prevention of microbial growth, MNPs have attracted the attention of researchers. Biopolymers/polymers can be easily combined with different MNPs which act as a vehicle not only for one type of particles but also as a hybrid system that allows a combination of natural compounds with metallic nanocompounds. However, there is a need for risk evaluation to use nanoparticles in food packaging. In this review, we aim to discuss how MNPs incorporated into polymers/biopolymers matrices can be used for food preservation, considering the quality and safety, which are desirable in food technology.

Abstract
Chitin nanocrystals (ChNC) were isolated from shrimp shells powder using acid hydrolysis and ammonium persulfate methods. Multifunctional carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) composite films were prepared by adding ChNC and grapefruit seed extract (GSE), and their effects on the optical, mechanical, water vapor barrier, and antibacterial properties of CMC film were investigated. The isolated ChNC had a needle-like structure with a length of 340-370 nm and a diameter of 18-20 nm depending on the isolation method. The CMC films prepared with ChNC and GSE were transparent with high UV barrier properties. The addition of GSE reduced the strength (TS) and stiffness (EM) of CMC films by 10.4% and 30.3%, respectively, while the flexibility (EB) increased by 17.7%. However, when the ChNC was added, the TS and EM of CMC film increased by 19.7% and 58.7%, respectively, and the EB remained the same. The addition of ChNC reduced the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the CMC film by 27%. CMC films containing GSE also showed strong antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogenic bacteria, E. coli and L. monocytogenes.

Abstract
In this study, silver (Ag), zinc oxide (ZnO), and copper oxide (CuO) metallic nanoparticles were used in preparation of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nanobiocomposite films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (EDXA), water vapor permeability (WVP), ultraviolet and visible light (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and mechanical and microbial tests were used to determine the characteristics of the obtained active films. SEM results showed that the CMC nanobiocomposite films had roughness deflection levels and the EDXA test confirmed the presence of Ag, ZnO, and Cuo nanoparticles in the biopolymer tissue. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirmed that with addition of metallic nanoparticles to the pure CMC film, absorption rate increased and WVP decreased. In the mechanical tests, addition of nanoparticles also increased the tensile strength of the films, and the nanobiocomposite films exhibited higher resistance compared to the pure CMC film. Films incorporating metallic nanoparticles showed antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus growth. Thus, nanobiocomposite films can be used as active packaging films and could increase the shelf-life of the food.

Abstract
Objective: The microbial, physico-chemical and optical corruptions threaten a variety of foods and drugs and consequently the human biological safety and its accessible resources. The humanbeing's tendency towards bio-based materials and natural plant-extracts led to an increase in the usage of antimicrobial biocomposites based on medicinal herbs. Miswak (Salvadora persica L.) extract (SPE) has been proved effective for its antimicrobial and other biological activities. Therefore, in this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (TONP) and SPE were applied to fabricate antimicrobial carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) based bio-nanocomposites which would simultaneously promote some thermo-physical and barrier properties. Methods: CMC-neat film (C1), CMC/TONP-2% (C2) and CMC/TONP-2% with 150, 300 and 450 mg/mL SPE (SPE150, SPE30 and SPE450, respectively) were fabricated. The physical and mechanical properties; elemental mapping analysis (MAP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA-DTG); fourier transform infrared (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and UV-vis spectroscopies were done to further validate the results. Results: Addition of TONP (2%) improved the blocking of UV light at 280 nm while SPE-containing nanocomposites completely blocked it. FTIR, XRD and SEM confirmed the formation of homogeneous films and high miscibility of applied materials. TONP led to an increase in Young's modulus (YM) and stress at break (SB) while SPE decreased them and enhanced the elongation to break (EB) (flexibility) of the active nanocomposites. Compared to CMC-film, the thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA-DTG) showed a higher thermal stability for CMC/TONP and CMC/TONP/SPE nanocomposites. The EDX spectroscopy and elemental mapping analysis (MAP) proved the existence and well-distributedness of Na, K, Cl, S, Ti, F and N elements in SPE-activated nanocomposites. The pure SPE and SPE-activated nanocomposites showed a favorable antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. Conclusion: The CMC-TiO2-SPE nanocomposites were homogeneously produced. Combination of TiO2 nanoparticles and dose-dependent SPE led to an improvement of thermal stability, and high potential in antimicrobial and UV-barrier properties. These results can generally highlight the role of the fabricated antimicrobial bio-nanocomposites as a based for different applications especially in food/drug packaging or coating.

Abstract
Waste from non-degradable plastics is becoming an increasingly serious problem. Therefore, more and more research focuses on the development of materials with biodegradable properties. Bio-polymers are excellent raw materials for the production of such materials. Bio-based biopolymer films reinforced with nanostructures have become an interesting area of research. Nanocomposite films are a group of materials that mainly consist of bio-based natural (e.g., chitosan, starch) and synthetic (e.g., poly(lactic acid)) polymers and nanofillers (clay, organic, inorganic, or carbon nanostructures), with different properties. The interaction between environmentally friendly biopolymers and nanofillers leads to the improved functionality of nanocomposite materials. Depending on the properties of nanofillers, new or improved properties of nanocomposites can be obtained such as: barrier properties, improved mechanical strength, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties or thermal stability. This review compiles information about biopolymers used as the matrix for the films with nanofillers as the active agents. Particular emphasis has been placed on the influence of nanofillers on functional properties of biopolymer films and their possible use within the food industry and food packaging systems. The possible applications of those nanocomposite films within other industries (medicine, drug and chemical industry, tissue engineering) is also briefly summarized.

Abstract
There is an increasing interest toward biodegradable active packaging because of consumer demand and environmental concerns. Despite this interest, poor thermal, mechanical, and water barrier properties of biodegradable polymers such as gelatin limit their application in food packaging. In this study, to prevail these limitations, the gelatin-based nanocomposite containing chitosan nanofiber (CHNF) and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were fabricated and characterized by FTIR, SEM, and DSC analyses. The results showed the appropriate interactions between gelatin matrix, CHNF and ZnONPs due to their good compatibility. Additionally, the nanocomposite showed high mechanical and water barrier properties due to its high dense and less permeable structure. The incorporation of CHNF compensated the negative effect of ZnONPs on the color properties of gelatin film. In addition, the synergistic effect between CHNF and ZnONPs improved the antibacterial activity of nanocomposite. In conclusion, the fabricated bio nanocomposite indicated considerable potential for food packaging.

Abstract
In this study, a variety of nanocomposites, namely, MEL@AgNPs, MEL@ZnONPs, and Ag-ZnO/MEL/GA were biosynthesized using MEL and gum arabic to serve in biomedical applications. The synthesized nanocomposites were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and FTIR spectroscopy. The physicochemical properties and biomedical activities of the synthesized nanocomposites were investigated. The Ag-ZnO/MEL/GA nanocomposites showed greater antidiabetic activity against α-amylase and α-glucosidase, and higher antibacterial activity compared to MEL@AgNPs and MEL@ZnONPs. Furthermore, HepG2 cells were exposed to MEL@AgNPs, MEL@ZnONPs, and Ag-ZnO/MEL/GA nanocomposites for 24 h and their IC50 values were 63.25, 26.91 and 28.97 μg mL-1 (P < 0.05), respectively. According to this comparative study, it is apparent that the Ag-ZnO/MEL/GA nanocomposites have a great potential to serve as antitumor agents against HepG2, and antidiabetic and antibacterial agents.

Abstract
The bacterial infections have always a serious problem to public health. Scientists are developing new antibacterial materials to overcome this problem. Polysaccharides are promising biopolymers due to their diverse biological functions, low toxicity, and high biodegradability. Chitin and chitosan have antibacterial properties due to their cationic nature, while cellulose/bacterial cellulose does not possess any antibacterial activity. Moreover, the insolubility of chitin in common solvents, the poor solubility of chitosan in water, and the low mechanical properties of chitosan have restricted their biomedical applications. In order to solve these problems, chemical modifications such as quaternization, carboxymethylation, cationization, or surface modification of these polymers with different antimicrobial agents, including metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, are carried out to obtain new materials with improved physiochemical and biological properties. This mini review describes the recent progress in such derivatives and composites with potential antibacterial applications.

Abstract
In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibrous membranes containing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were successfully fabricated by the combination of electrospinning and a green reduction approach. Through the electrospinning technique, uniform and smooth nanofibres can be obtained, and the Ag NPs with a narrow size distributions are well dispersed in PVA nanofibres. The investigation indicates that the mass ratio of reductant tea polyphenols and AgNO3 play a crucial role in controlling the size of the Ag NPs. More importantly, multi-layered fabrics with a layer of PVA/Ag NP nanofibrous membrane layered onto cotton substrates were developed and applied to shoe insoles. The fabricated shoe insoles with functionalized PVA nanofibres exhibit remarkable antimicrobial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus (i.e. antibacterial rate > 99%). The creation of such an encouraging fabric could establish a new optimization methodology for producing nanoengineered functional textiles. This study aims to develop an antimicrobial insole with an electrospun nanofibre mat which contains green reduced Ag NPs by a facile fabrication method.![]()

Abstract
The utilization of nanocellulose has increasingly gained attentions from various research fields, especially the field of polymer nanocomposites owing to the growing environmental hazardous of petroleum based fiber products. Meanwhile, the searching of alternative cellulose sources from different plants has become the interests for producing nanocellulose with varying characterizations that expectedly suit in specific field of applications. In this content the long and strong bast fibers from plant species was gradually getting its remarkable position in the field of nanocellulose extraction and nanocomposites fabrications. This review article intended to present an overview of the chemical structure of cellulose, different types of nanocellulose, bast fibers compositions, structure, polylactic acid (PLA) and the most probable processing techniques on the developments of nanocellulose from different bast fibers especially jute, kenaf, hemp, flax, ramie and roselle and its nanocomposites. This article however more focused on the fabrication of PLA based nanocomposites due to its high firmness, biodegradability and sustainability properties in developed products towards the environment. Along with this it also explored a couple of issues to improve the processing techniques of bast fibers nanocellulose and its reinforcement in the PLA biopolymer as final products.

Abstract
AbstractThe infectious diseases caused by various bacteria pose serious threat to human health. To solve this problem, antibacterial agents have been widely used in people’s daily life to deactivate or kill these bacteria. Among the antibacterial agents, ZnO is one of the most promising metal oxide antibacterial agents due to its non-toxic nature and safe properties. To expand its application, many composites of ZnO have been widely studied. Cellulose, as one of the most abundant biopolymers, has many merits like biodegradability, biocompatibility and low cost. Thus, many studies focus on synthesized cellulose/ZnO. The synthetic strategy includes both chemical and physical methods. Many of them have been shown that cellulose/ZnO composites have excellent antibacterial activity and are environment-friendly and have many applications for example food packing, antibacterial fibers and so on. This review mainly discusses the preparation methods of cellulose/ZnO and their effect on the morphology and properties.

Abstract
In this research, a novel carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based nanocomposite films containing sodium montmorillonite (MMT) (5%wt) and zinc oxide (ZnO) (1, 2, 3 and 4%wt) nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated via casting method. The results revealed that addition of NPs decreased water vapor permeability of the films by about 53%, while moisture content, density and glass transition temperature increased. The nanomaterials enhanced resistance of the nanocomposites against tensile stress at the expense of elongation at break. Nano-ZnO was very effective than nanoclay in UV-light blocking (99% vs. 60%) associated with sacrificing the films transparency. Formation of hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of CMC and MMT was evidenced by FTIR spectroscopy. According to the XRD analysis, clay nanolayers formed an exfoliated structure in the nanocomposites, whereas ZnO NPs raised crystallinity. SEM micrographs showed well-dispersed MMT and ZnO NPs through the films surface. Antibacterial test showed that vulnerability of Gram-positive S. aureus toward ZnO NPs was more than that of Gram-negative E. Coli. In conclusion, simultaneous incorporation of MMT and ZnO NPs improved the functional characteristics of CMC film and extended the potential for food packaging applications.
