Carboxymethyl chitosan grafted trisiloxane surfactant nanoparticles with pH sensitivity for sustained release of pesticide

Characterization of ultrasonic-assisted antifungal film loaded with fermented walnut meal on Rosa roxburghii Tratt during near-freezing temperature storage

Fermented walnut meal (FW) has antifungal activity against Penicillium victoriae, a fungus responsible for Rosa roxbughii Tratt spoilage. This study characterized and applied ultrasonic-assisted antifungal film loaded with FW to preserve R. roxbughii Tratt during near-freezing temperature (NFT). Results showed that O2 and CO2 transmission rates decreased by 80.02% and 29.05%, respectively, and antimicrobial properties were improved with ultrasound at 560 W for 5 min and 1% FW. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results revealed ultrasound improved hydrogen bonds and inductive effect via ─NH, ─OH, and C═O bonds. The addition of FW led to the formation of CMCS-GL-FW polymer via C═O bond. Thermogravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscope results demonstrated thermal degradation process was decomposed by ultrasound, and the internal structure of P. victoriae was accelerated by the addition of FW. Compared to the U-CMCS/GL group, the vitamin C content, peroxidase, and catalase activities of U-CMCS/GL/FW were enhanced by 4.24%, 8.52%, and 14.3% during NFT (-0.8 to -0.4°C), respectively. Particularly, the fungal count of the U-CMCS/GL/FW group did not exceed 105 CFU g-1 at the end of storage, and the relative abundance of P. victoriae decreased to 0.007%. Our findings provide an effective route for agricultural waste as natural antifungal compounds in the active packaging industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: In this study, the barrier and antimicrobial properties of film were successfully improved by ultrasonic treatment and loaded fermented walnut meal. The ultrasonic-assisted antifungal film loaded with fermented walnut meal effectively delayed the degradation of nutrients and reduced microbial invasion of Rosa roxburghii Tratt. These results provide a theoretical basis for the application of agricultural waste in the food packaging industry.

Bioactive modification of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) film surfaces by hyaluronic acid and chitosan for enhanced cell adhesion

Cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) has recently emerged as an attractive material in biomedical fields for its high purity, excellent stability and chemical resistance, particularly in applications of microfluidic chips, prefilled syringes and bone regeneration. However, the high hydrophobicity of COC has inhibited the adhesion of cells and biological macromolecules, such as proteins, etc., significantly limiting its broader applications. In this study, we propose a new method to modify COC surfaces by sequential coating with polydopamine (PDA) followed by hyaluronic acid (HA) or O-carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), while comparing the impacts of the positively charged HA and negatively charged CMC on protein adsorption and cell adhesion. FTIR and XPS measurements confirmed the successful modification on COC films, resulting in surfaces with highly increased hydrophilicity, anti-oxidative properties, and improved protein adsorption. Moreover, negatively charged HA, with signal transduction capabilities showed a greater effect in promoting cell adhesion. Thus, we present a straightforward strategy for enhancing the hydrophilicity of COC surfaces, offering new insights into COC modification and potential biomedical applications.

Downsizing gum Arabic-based abamectin particles using flash nanoprecipitation method for enhanced pesticide deposition

Pesticides are vital for ensuring crop protection and stable yields, but their low efficiency and eco-unfriendly carriers raise environmental concerns. In this study, abamectin nanopesticides were designed and fabricated using natural polysaccharides [gum arabic (GA)] and a co-stabiliser via flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) method to reduce the size of nanopesticides and enhance their foliar affinity and deposition. Various co-stabilisers were innovatively introduced into the FNP process; the synergy between GA and the co-stabiliser significantly reduced the particle size (111.5 nm), narrowed the size distribution (polydispersity index = 0.078), and enhanced the stability and release performance of the nanopesticides. Importantly, the downsized nanopesticides effectively improved retention on leaf surfaces, reducing pesticide loss. In addition, because of the excellent control capability of the FNP method, the particle size of the nanopesticides could be flexibly adjusted by modifying the flow-based process parameters. Nanopesticides with small sizes demonstrated good control efficacy against Tetranychus urticae, comparable to those of commercial emulsion in water formulations. This study provides an effective approach for enhancing the utilisation efficiency of pesticide droplets by reducing particle size to ensure sustainable agriculture.

Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology in Agricultural Pesticide Delivery: A Review

Pesticides play a crucial role in ensuring food production and food security. Conventional pesticide formulations can not meet the current needs of social and economic development, and they also can not meet the requirements of green agriculture. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, stable, safe, and environmentally friendly pesticide formulations to gradually replace old formulations which have high pollution and low efficacy. The rise of nanotechnology provides new possibilities for innovation in pesticide formulations. Through reasonable design and construction of an environmentally friendly pesticide delivery system (PDS) based on multifunctional nanocarriers, the drawbacks of conventional pesticides can be effectively solved, realizing a water-based, nanosized, targeted, efficient, and safe pesticide system. In the past five years, researchers in chemistry, materials science, botany, entomology, plant protection, and other fields are paying close attention to the research of nanomaterials based PDSs and nanopesticide formulations and have made certain research achievements. These explorations provide useful references for promoting the innovation of nanopesticides and developing a new generation of green and environmentally friendly pesticide formulations. This Perspective summarizes the recent advances of nanomaterials in PDSs and nanopesticide innovation, aiming to provide useful guidance for carrier selection, surface engineering, controlled release conditions, and application in agriculture.

Induction of antiherbivore defense responses in poplars using a methyl jasmonate and mesoporous silica nanoparticle complex

BACKGROUND

Poplar in China has long been plagued by the fall webworm Hyphantria cunea. Enhancing plant immunity using chemical elicitors is an environmentally friendly approach to pest control. The phytohormone methyl jasmonate (MeJA) can stimulate the chemical defenses of poplars against herbivores but has been shown to have limited efficacy in practice. Here, we studied the effects of a MeJA and mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) complex (MeJA@MSN) regarding the induction of poplar resistance to H. cunea, which may provide strategies for the effective use of MeJA.

RESULTS

The silicon-based phytohormone complex (MeJA@MSNs) exhibited excellent biological and physiochemical properties, such as excellent biocompatibility and plant tissue transportability. The changes in metabolites in poplar leaves induced by MeJA, MSNs, and MeJA@MSNs were investigated by metabolic analysis. MeJA@MSNs led to highly potent induced resistance along with elevated salicylaldehyde content, which increased with the dose administered. The salicylaldehyde metabolite showed a strong antifeedant effect on H. cunea larvae at a dosage of 1 μg, with the 50% lethal dose being 20.4 μg/mg. Furthermore, transcriptional analysis showed that MeJA@MSNs upregulated key genes in biosynthetic pathways more than MeJA and MSNs.

CONCLUSION

Our results show that MeJA and MSNs interact positively in poplar, leading to salicylaldehyde accumulation and increased induced resistance to H. cunea, providing new insights into the underlying resistance mechanisms induced by MeJA@MSNs. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

A flexible modulated pesticide release platform through poly(urethane-urea) microcapsules: effect of different crosslinkers compositions

BACKGROUND

Polymeric microcapsules (MCs) have become an important issue and have attracted increasing attention because of their tunable physical and chemical properties. Diverse shell structures can confer multiple properties on MCs.

RESULTS

Different polyols (1,4-butanediol and glycerin) and polyamines (triethylenetetramine and isophorondiamine) were selected as crosslinkers to obtain emamectin benzoate (EB)-loaded poly(urethane-urea) MCs (PU-MCs) by interfacial polymerization. The four obtained PU-MCs showed sphericity with different degrees of smoothness on their surfaces, and displayed a uniform size distribution ranging from 500 to 700 nm. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy showed that the shell thickness was roughly uniform, and was greatly influenced by the type and structure of the crosslinker. GI-MCs, prepared using glycerin and isophorondiamine, had the largest shell thickness. GT-MCs, obtained using glycerin and triethylenetetramine, had the highest encapsulation efficiency and drug-loading content, and BT-MCs, obtained using mixtures of 1,4-butanediol and triethylenetetramine, had the fastest release behavior. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the greater the degree of shell crosslinking, the higher decomposition temperature and the greater the thermal stability. A BT-MC suspension had the lowest viscosity and contact angle with the best wettability. Bioassay experiments showed that BT-MCs exhibited good insecticidal activity against Plutella xylostella larvae with a half-maximal lethal concentration of 4.19 mg/L. Furthermore, a BT-MC suspension showed good thermal and light stability, with potential applications in minimizing the toxicity of EB through sustained release.

CONCLUSION

Various properties of EB-loaded PU-MCs were modulated through simple selection of different polyols and polyamines during fabrication, which might have an important role in constructing the pesticide delivery system and improving pesticide utilization. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Siloxane Containing Polyether Groups-Synthesis and Use as an Anti-Biocorrosion Coating

In the presented study, the effectiveness of a siloxane polyether (HOL7) coating on glass against microbiological colonization was assessed using microalgae as a key component of widespread aerial biofilms. The siloxane polyether was successfully synthesized by a hydrosilylation reaction in the presence of Karstedt's catalyst. The product structure was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and GPC analysis. In addition, the thermal stability of HOL7 was studied by thermogravimetric measurement. Subsequently, the surfaces of glass plates were modified with the obtained organosilicon derivative. In the next step, a microalgal experiment was conducted. A mixture of four strains of algal taxa isolated from building materials was used for the experiment-Chlorodium saccharophilum PNK010, Klebsormidium flaccidum PNK013, Pseudostichococcus monallantoides PNK037, and Trebouxia aggregata PNK080. The choice of these algae followed from their wide occurrence in terrestrial environments. Application of an organofunctional siloxane compound on the glass reduced, more or less effectively, the photosynthetic activity of algal cells, depending on the concentration of the compound. Since the structure of the compound was not based on biocide-active agents, its effectiveness was associated with a reduction in water content in the cells.

Preparation and characterization of ternary polysaccharide hydrogels based on carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl chitosan, and carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin

A series of ternary polysaccharide hydrogels were facile prepared by incorporating carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into the carboxymethyl chitosan/carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin (CMCS/CMCD) complex solution based on multiple physical interactions. Structure properties of the CMC/CMCS/CMCD hydrogels were revealed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TG. The rheological and texture properties, temperature/pH-response behaviors, biocompatablity, and antimicrobial activity of the hydrogels were determined in detail. These results showed that the existence of electron force and hydrogen bond among three components leading to formation of the hydrogels, displaying good mechanical characteristic, stable solid-like rheological properties, controllable swelling and degradation behaviors, and excellent biocompatibility. Additionally, the swelling kinetics can be well described by the Schott's pseudo second order model. Moreover, the hydrogels loaded with cinnamic acid (CA) exhibited good antimicrobial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the antimicrobial activity was related to the composition of the prepared hydrogels. The novel ternary polysaccharide hydrogels may have good application prospects in food and bio-medicine.

Self-Assembled Nanocarrier Delivery Systems for Bioactive Compounds

Although bioactive compounds (BCs) have many important functions, their applications are greatly limited due to their own defects. The development of nanocarriers (NCs) technology has gradually overcome the defects of BCs. NCs are equally important as BCs to some extent. Self-assembly (SA) methods to build NCs have many advantages than chemical methods, and SA has significant impact on the structure and function of NCs. However, the relationship among SA mechanism, structure, and function has not been given enough attention. Therefore, from the perspective of bottom-up building mechanism, the concept of SA-structure-function of NCs is emphasized to promote the development of SA-based NCs. First, the conditions and forces for occurring SA are introduced, and then the SA basis and molecular mechanism of protein, polysaccharide, and lipid are summarized. Then, varieties of the structures formed based on SA are introduced in detail. Finally, facing the defects of BCs and how to be well solved by NCs are also elaborated. This review attempts to describe the great significance of constructing artificial NCs to deliver BCs from the aspects of SA-structure-function, so as to promote the development of SA-based NCs and the wide application of BCs.

Fabrication and property of the avermectin-attapulgite composites regulated by mixed-surfactants and sodium alginate

OA-AP, DTAB-AP, DDBAB-AP complexes were synthesized by introducing surfactants of OA, DTAB and DDBAB into attapulgite (AP). The complexes were systematically characterized. The appearance of new diffraction peaks at low angle indicated a new lamellar structure of OA (DTAB, DDBAB)-AP complexes. Then, the pesticide avermectin (AV) composites of AV/DTAB-OA-AP, AV/DDBAB-OA-AP, sodium alginate (SA) @AV/DTAB-OA-AP and SA@AV/DDBAB-OA-AP were prepared and investigated detailedly. The basal spacings of AV/DTAB-OA-AP and AV/DDBAB-OA-AP were bigger than those of OA-AP and DTAB(DDBAB)-AP. The existences of AV, surfactants and SA molecules of the composites were further confirmed. Furthermore the effect of SA on AV release behaviors of SA@AV/DTAB (DDBAB)-OA-AP microspheres was investigated and compared. Compared to AV/DTAB (DDBAB)-OA-AP, the released rate of the microspheres decreased remarkably. The AV release behaviors of AV/DTAB (DDBAB)-OA-AP could be fitted with pseudo second-order model, while the first-order model was better to describe those of the microspheres. Finally, the bioassay of the microspheres were studied and analyzed. The microspheres had a longer duration and control effect on Mythimna separata. This study could be helpful to provide a pesticide delivery system to improve the utilization efficiency of pesticides.

Research Progress in Structure Synthesis, Properties, and Applications of Small-Molecule Silicone Surfactants

Silicone surfactants have garnered significant research attention owing to their superior properties, such as wettability, ductility, and permeability. Small-molecular silicone surfactants with simple molecular structures outperform polymeric silicone surfactants in terms of surface activity, emulsification, wetting, foaming, and other areas. Moreover, silicone surfactants with small molecules exhibit a diverse and rich molecular structure. This review discusses various synthetic routes for the synthesis of different classes of surfactants, including single-chain, "umbrella" structure, double chain, bolaform, Gemini, and stimulus-responsive surfactants. The fundamental surface/interface properties of the synthesized surfactants are also highlighted. Additionally, these surfactants have demonstrated enormous potential in agricultural synergism, drug delivery, mineral flotation, enhanced oil recovery, separation, and extraction, and foam fire-fighting.

A Promising Plant-Based Eugenol-Loaded Nano Delivery System (EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS) for Enhanced Antibacterial and Insect Repellent Behavior

Pathogens and pests pose significant threats to global crop productivity and plant immunity, necessitating urgent measures from researchers to prevent pathogen contamination and pest damage to crops. A natural plant-based antibacterial agent, eugenol (EUG), has demonstrated excellent antimicrobial and insect repellent capabilities, but the characteristics of volatilization and poor dissolution limit the practical application. The nanoization of pesticide formulations holds promise in the development of highly effective pesticides for antibacterial and insecticidal purposes. Herein, a eugenol-loaded nano delivery system (EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS) was synthesized using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as a functional monomer to connect carrier core structure carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with shell structure chitosan (CS), and EUG was encapsulated within the carrier. EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS demonstrated excellent leaf affinity, with minimum contact angles (CAs) of 37.83 and 70.52° on hydrophilic and hydrophobic vegetable leaf surfaces, respectively. Moreover, the maximum liquid holding capacity (LHC) of EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic vegetable leaf surfaces demonstrates a noteworthy 55.24% enhancement compared to the LHC of pure EUG. The in vitro release curve of EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS exhibited an initial burst followed by stable sustained release. It is with satisfaction that the nano delivery system demonstrated exceptional antibacterial properties against S. aureus and satisfactory insecticidal efficacy against Spodoptera litura. The development of this eugenol-loaded nano delivery system holds significant potential for enhanced antibacterial and insect repellents in agriculture, paving the way for the application of volatile bioactive substances.

High deposition and precise stimulus-response release performance of lignin-coated dendritic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles for efficient pesticide utilization

The inefficient and improper use of conventional pesticides has prompted the development of targeted and cost-effective pesticide delivery systems, which aim to optimize the efficient utilization of pesticides while minimizing environmental pollution in surrounding areas. In this paper, a dual-stimuli-responsive pesticide slow-release nanopesticide system (NES@DMONs@LGN) was designed in this study, utilizing mesoporous silica (DMONs) as a nanocarrier and lignin (LGN) as a capping agent to encapsulate the pesticide molecules within DMONs. This system enables intelligent release of pesticide molecules while preventing environmental pollution caused by leakage. Additionally, NES@DMONs@LGN exhibit excellent specific loading efficiency. The abundant hydrophilic functional groups in the lignin layer on the surface of NES@DMONs@LGN can establish hydrogen bonds with advanced fatty acids and fatty alcohols present in the waxy epidermis of plants, thereby significantly enhancing carrier wettability and adhesion. Typically, phytophagous lepidopteran pests have an alkaline midgut and possess lignin-degrading enzymes. The NES@DMONs@LGN developed in this study are capable of rapid release under high temperature and alkaline conditions. Therefore, the precise release of pesticide molecules in the target pests can be achieved, thus increasing the actual utilization rate of pesticides. The experimental results demonstrated that NES@DMONs@LGN effectively prevented photodegradation of the active ingredient after 48 h of UV irradiation, resulting in a 3.7-fold improvement in photostability and providing robust UV protection. By encapsulating pesticide molecules with nanocarriers, the release of pesticides in non-targeted environments can be prevented, thereby significantly reducing toxicity to zebrafish. Thus, this study provides a promising solution for sustainable greening of agriculture.

Preparation and application of the thermo-/pH-/ ion-sensitive semi-IPN hydrogel based on chitosan

Chitosan based hydrogels with multiple stimulus responses have broad application prospects in many fields. Considering the advantages of semi interpenetrating network (IPN) technology and the special temperature and ion responsiveness of polymers containing zwitterionic groups, a semi-IPN hydrogel was prepared through in situ free radical polymerization of N,N-dimethyl acrylamide and [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide with polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker and carboxymethyl chitosan as filler. The gel mass fraction and swelling ratio were measured, and the preparation conditions were optimized. The result indicated that the hydrogel possessed a unique thermo-/pH-/ ion-sensitive behavior. The swelling ratio increased with the increase of temperature and ion concentration, and showed a decreasing trend with the increase in pH. In addition, the hydrogel was stable when the stimuli changed. Adsorption behavior of the hydrogel to Eosin Y (EY) was systematically investigated. The adsorption process can be described well by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that it was a chemical adsorption. The experiments indicated that the hydrogel exhibited good antifouling and reusability features. Therefore, the semi-IPN hydrogel with antifouling properties and thermo-/pH-/ion-sensitivity can be easily manufactured is expected to find applications in water treatment fields.

Chitosan nanoplatforms in agriculture for multi-potential applications - Adsorption/removal, sustained release, sensing of pollutants & delivering their alternatives - A comprehensive review

An increase in the global population has led to an increment in the food consumption, which has demanded high food production. To meet the production demands, different techniques and technologies are adopted in agriculture the past 70 years, where utilization of the industry-manufactured/synthetic pesticides (SPTCs - e.g., herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, nematicides, acaricides, avicides, and so on) is one of them. However, it has been later revealed that the usage of SPTCs has negatively impacted the environment - especially water and soil, and also agricultural products - mainly foods. Though preventive measures are taken by government agencies, still the utilization rate of SPTCs is high, and consequently, their maximum residual limit (MRL) levels in food are above tolerance, which further results in serious health concerns in humans. So, there is an immediate need for decreasing the utilization of the SPTCs by delivering them effectively at reduced levels in agriculture but with the required efficacy. Apart from that, it is mandatory to detect/sense and also to remove them to lessen the environmental pollution, while developing effective alternative techniques/technologies. Among many suitable materials that are developed/idenified, chitosan, a bio-polymer has gained great attention and is comprehensively implemented in all the above-mentioned applications - sensing, delivery and removal, due to their excellent and required properties. Though many works are available, in this work, a special attention is given to chitosan and its derivatives (i.e., chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs))based removal, controlled release and sensing of the SPTCs - specifically herbicides and insecticides. Moreover, the chitosan/CNPs-based protective effects on the in vivo models during/after their exposure to the SPTCs, and the current technologies like clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) as alternatives for SPTCs are also reviewed.

Chitosan-based nanopesticides enhanced anti-fungal activity against strawberry anthracnose as "sugar-coated bombs"

A chitosan-based nanoparticle was prepared using chitosan (CS) and O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMCS). Our study revealed that chitosan/O-carboxymethyl chitosan/tebuconazole nanoparticles (CS/O-CMCS/TBA NPs) exhibited superior antifungal activity, foliar adhesion, and microbial target adhesion performance compared to commercial suspension concentrate (SC). The antifungal activity of CS/O-CMCS/TBA NPs against C. gloeosporioides, with a 3.13-fold increase in efficacy over TBA (SC). We also found that low concentrations of CS/O-CMCS NPs promoted the growth of C. gloeosporioides and enhanced the fungal catabolism of chitosan. Overall, the CS/O-CMCS/TBA NPs were found to possess the remarkable capability to selectively aggregate around pathogenic microorganisms and CS/O-CMCS NPs can enhance the fungal catabolism of chitosan. CS/O-CMCS/TBA NPs, as a "sugar-coated bomb", was a promising asset for effective plant disease management and pesticide utilization through the affinity of chitosan-based nanoparticles and C. gloeosporioides, enabling targeted delivery and targeted release of their encapsulated active ingredient, which was important for the development and application of biocompatible chitosan-based nanopesticides.

Characterisation, slow-release, and antibacterial properties of carboxymethyl chitosan/inulin hydrogel film loaded with novel antilisterial durancin GL

This paper reports the development of a hydrogel film with antibacterial activity and controlled release characteristics. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) is grafted onto durancin GL and inulin via a mediated reaction between N-hydroxysuccinimide and 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride. Rheology tests, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and lap shear tests confirmed the formation of a stable chemical cross-linking and excellent adhesion hydrogel with 4 % CMCS and 8 % inulin. The CMCS/inulin hydrogel film loaded with durancin GL appears transparent and uniform. FTIR spectroscopy results reveal the interaction mode among CMCS, inulin, durancin GL, and the hydrogel film structure. Cross-linking improved thermal stability and water-vapour barrier performance. The hydrophobicity of CMCS/inulin @Durancin GL increased under a durancin GL concentration of 0.036 g/30 mL, and the release of active substances is prolonged. In-vitro antibacterial capacity and salmon preservation experiments show that the addition of durancin GL enhanced the antibacterial activity of the hydrogel film. Therefore, CMCS/inulin@Durancin GL hydrogel films can be used as fresh-keeping packaging materials in practical applications.

Recent advances in stimuli-response mechanisms of nano-enabled controlled-release fertilizers and pesticides

Nanotechnology-enabled fertilizers and pesticides, especially those capable of releasing plant nutrients or pesticide active ingredients (AIs) in a controlled manner, can effectively enhance crop nutrition and protection while minimizing the environmental impacts of agricultural activities. Herein, we review the fundamentals and recent advances in nanofertilizers and nanopesticides with controlled-release properties, enabled by nanocarriers responsive to environmental and biological stimuli, including pH change, temperature, light, redox conditions, and the presence of enzymes. For pH-responsive nanocarriers, pH change can induce structural changes or degradation of the nanocarriers or cleave the bonding between nutrients/pesticide AIs and the nanocarriers. Similarly, temperature response typically involves structural changes in nanocarriers, and higher temperatures can accelerate the release by diffusion promoting or bond breaking. Photothermal materials enable responses to infrared light, and photolabile moieties (e.g., o-nitrobenzyl and azobenzene) are required for achieving ultraviolet light responses. Redox-responsive nanocarriers contain disulfide bonds or ferric iron, whereas enzyme-responsive nanocarriers typically contain the enzyme's substrate as a building block. For fabricating nanofertilizers, pH-responsive nanocarriers have been well explored, but only a few studies have reported temperature- and enzyme-responsive nanocarriers. In comparison, there have been more reports on nanopesticides, which are responsive to a range of stimuli, including many with dual- or triple-responsiveness. Nano-enabled controlled-release fertilizers and pesticides show tremendous potential for enhancing the utilization efficiency of nutrients and pesticide AIs. However, to expand their practical applications, future research should focus on optimizing their performance under realistic conditions, lowering costs, and addressing regulatory and public concerns over environmental and safety risks.

Carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin grafted hollow copper sulfide@mesoporous silica carriers for stimuli-responsive pesticide delivery

Stimuli-responsive controlled release systems have received extensive attention to improve the pesticide bioavailability and minimize environmental pollution. Herein, a multiple stimuli-responsive IMI@HCuS@mSiO₂ @ -ss-CβCD delivery system was constructed using modified carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin (CβCD-ss-COOH) as sealing materials, hollow copper sulfide nanoparticles with amino-functionalized mesoporous silica shell (HCuS@mSiO₂-NH₂) as carriers and imidacloprid (IMI) as the model drug. The cavity structure of HCuS@mSiO₂-NH₂ would provide a large space for pesticide loading. The results revealed that HCuS@mSiO₂-ss-CβCD was approximately 230 nm in size and the loading efficiency for IMI was 25.7%, and exhibited better biosafety on bacteria and seed. HCuS carriers were also served as photothermal agent and possessed high photothermal conversion effect (η = 38.4%). IMI@HCuS@mSiO₂ @ -ss-CβCD displayed excellent foliage adhesion and multiple stimuli-responsive release properties to pH, α-amylase, GSH, and NIR. The photostability of IMI embedded in CuS@mSiO₂ @ -ss-CβCD was approximately 10 times that of IMI solution. This work provides an efficient nanoplatform for realizing pesticide delivery.

Smart Protein-Based Fluorescent Nanoparticles Prepared by a Continuous Nanoprecipitation Method for Pesticides' Precise Delivery and Tracing

It is highly desirable to develop smart and green pesticide nanoformulations for improving pesticide targeting and reducing their inherent toxicity. Herein, we demonstrate a continuous nanoprecipitation method to construct a novel type of enzyme-responsive fluorescent nanopesticides (denoted as ABM@BSA-FITC/GA NPs) based on abamectin, fluorescein isothiocyanate isomer (FITC)-modified protein, and food-grade gum arabic. The as-prepared ABM@BSA-FITC/GA NPs exhibit good water dispersibility, excellent storage stability, and enhanced wettability compared to commercial formulations. The controlled release of pesticides can be achieved through protein degradation caused by trypsin. Most importantly, the deposition, distribution, and transport of the ABM@BSA-FITC/GA NPs are precisely tracked on target plants (cabbage and cucumber) by fluorescence. Furthermore, the ABM@BSA-FITC/GA NPs show the high control efficacy against Plutella xylostella L., which is comparable with commercial emulsifiable concentrate formulation. In consideration of its eco-friendly composition and absence of organic solvent, this pesticide nanoformulation has promising potential in sustainable plant protection.

Synthesis of Carboxyl Modified Polyether Polysiloxane Surfactant for the Biodegradable Foam Fire Extinguishing Agents

It is necessary to develop novel and efficient alternatives to fluorocarbon surfactant and prepare fluorine-free environmentally-friendly fire extinguishing agent. The carboxyl modified polyether polysiloxane surfactant (CMPS) with high surface activity was synthesized via the esterification reaction using hydroxyl-containing polyether modified polysiloxane (HPMS) and maleic anhydride (MA) as raw materials. The process conditions of the esterification reaction were optimized by orthogonal tests, and the optimum process parameters were determined as follows: reaction temperature of 85 °C, reaction time of 4.5 h, isopropyl alcohol content of 20% and the molar ratio of HPMS/MA of 1/1. The chemical structure, surface activity, aggregation behavior, foam properties, wetting properties and electron distribution were systematically investigated. It was found that the carboxyl group was successfully grafted into silicone molecule, and the conjugated system was formed, which changed the interaction force between the molecules and would affect the surface activity of the aqueous solution. The CMPS exhibited excellent surface activity and could effectively reduce the water's surface tension to 18.46 mN/m. The CMPS formed spherical aggregates in aqueous solution, and the contact angle value of CMPS is 15.56°, illustrating that CMPS had excellent hydrophilicity and wetting performance. The CMPS can enhance the foam property and has good stability. The electron distribution results indicate that the introduced carboxyl groups are more inclined towards the negative charge band, which would be conducive to weak the interaction between molecules and improve the surface activity of the solution. Consequently, new foam fire extinguishing agents were prepared by using CMPS as a key component and they exhibited excellent fire-fighting performance. The prepared CMPS would be the optimal alternative to fluorocarbon surfactant and could be applied in foam extinguishing agents.

Redox and pH dual sensitive carboxymethyl chitosan functionalized polydopamine nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin for tumor chemo-photothermal therapy

The high expression of reduced glutathione (GSH) and low pH in tumor sites have encouraged new ideas for targeted drug release. The tumor microenvironment is a crucial target for studying the anti-tumor efficiency of photothermal therapy because the microenvironment plays a key role in cancer progression, local resistance, immune escaping, and metastasis. Herein, active mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin and functionalized with N,N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine (BAC) and cross-linked carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) were used to induce simultaneous redox- and pH-sensitive activity to achieve photothermal enhanced synergistic chemotherapy. The inherent disulfide bonds of BAC were able to deplete glutathione, thus increasing the oxidative stress in tumor cells and enhancing the release of doxorubicin. Additionally, the imine bonds between CMC and BAC were stimulated and decomposed in the acidic tumor microenvironment, improving the efficiency of light conversion through exposure to polydopamine. Moreover, in vitro and in vivo investigations demonstrated that this nanocomposite exhibited improved selective doxorubicin release in conditions mimicking the tumor microenvironment and low toxicity towards non-cancerous tissues, suggesting there is high potential for the clinical translation of this synergistic chemo-photothermal therapeutic agent.

Activity of chitin/chitosan/chitosan oligosaccharide against plant pathogenic nematodes and potential modes of application in agriculture: A review

Chemical nematicide is the most common method of controlling plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN). Given the negative impact of chemical nematicides on the environment and ecosystem, it is necessary to seek their alternatives and novel modes of application. Chitin oligo/polysaccharide (COPS), including chitosan and chitosan oligosaccharide, has unique biological properties. By producing ammonia, encouraging the growth of antagonistic bacteria, and enhancing crop tolerance, COPSs help suppress PPN growth during soil remediation. COPS is also an effective sustained-release carrier that can be used to overcome the shortcomings of nematicidal substances. This review summarizes the advancements of COPS research in nematode control from three perspectives of action mechanism as well as in slow-release carrier-loaded nematicides. Further, it discusses potential agricultural applications for nematode disease management.

pH-responsive λ-cyhalothrin nanopesticides for effective pest control and reduced toxicity to Harmonia axyridis

In this study, pH-responsive LC@O-CMCS/PU nanoparticles were prepared by encapsulating λ-cyhalothrin (LC) with O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMCS) to form LC/O-CMCS and then covering it with polyurethane (PU). Characterization and performance test results demonstrate that LC@O-CMCS/PU had good alkaline release properties and pesticide loading performance. Compared to commercial formulations containing large amounts of emulsifiers (e.g., emulsifiable concentrate, EC), LC@O-CMCS/PU showed better leaf-surface adhesion. On the dried pesticide-applied surfaces, the acute contact toxicity of LC@O-CMCS/PU to Harmonia axyridis (H. axyridis) was nearly 20 times lower than that of LC EC. Due to the slow-releasing property of LC@O-CMCS/PU, only 16.38 % of LC was released at 48 h in dew and effectively reduced the toxicity of dew. On the pesticide-applied leaves with dew, exposure to the LC (EC) caused 86.66 % mortality of H. axyridis larvae significantly higher than the LC@O-CMCS/PU, which was only 16.66 % lethality. Additionally, quantitative analysis demonstrated 11.33 mg/kg of λ-cyhalothrin in the dew on LC@O-CMCS/PU lower than LC (EC) with 4.54 mg/kg. In summary, LC@O-CMCS/PU effectively improves the safety of λ-cyhalothrin to H. axyridis and has great potential to be used in pest control combining natural enemies and chemical pesticides.

Polysaccharides for Medical Technology: Properties and Applications

Over the past decade, the use of polysaccharides has gained tremendous attention in the field of medical technology. They have been applied in various sectors such as tissue engineering, drug delivery system, face mask, and bio-sensing. This review article provides an overview and background of polysaccharides for biomedical uses. Different types of polysaccharides, for example, cellulose and its derivatives, chitin and chitosan, hyaluronic acid, alginate, and pectin are presented. They are fabricated in various forms such as hydrogels, nanoparticles, membranes, and as porous mediums. Successful development and improvement of polysaccharide-based materials will effectively help users to enhance their quality of personal health, decrease cost, and eventually increase the quality of life with respect to sustainability.

Chronic exposure to the star polycation (SPc) nanocarrier in the larval stage adversely impairs life history traits in Drosophila melanogaster

BACKGROUND

Nanomaterials are widely used as pesticide adjuvants to increase pesticide efficiency and minimize environmental pollution. But it is increasingly recognized that nanocarrier is a double-edged sword, as nanoparticles are emerging as new environmental pollutants. This study aimed to determine the biotoxicity of a widely applied star polycation (SPc) nanocarrier using Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly, as an in vivo model.

RESULTS

The lethal concentration 50 (LC₅₀) value of SPc was identified as 2.14 g/L toward third-instar larvae and 26.33 g/L for adults. Chronic exposure to a sub lethal concentration of SPc (1 g/L) in the larval stage showed long-lasting adverse effects on key life history traits. Exposure to SPc at larval stage adversely impacted the lifespan, fertility, climbing ability as well as stresses resistance of emerged adults. RNA-sequencing analysis found that SPc resulted in aberrant expression of genes involved in metabolism, innate immunity, stress response and hormone production in the larvae. Orally administrated SPc nanoparticles were mainly accumulated in intestine cells, while systemic responses were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings indicate that SPc nanoparticles are hazardous to fruit flies at multiple levels, which could help us to develop guidelines for further large-scale application.

Advances in stimuli-responsive systems for pesticides delivery: Recent efforts and future outlook

Effective pest management for enhanced crop output is one of the primary goals of establishing sustainable agricultural practices in the world. Pesticides are critical in preventing biological disasters, ensuring crop productivity, and fostering sustainable agricultural production growth. Studies showed that crops are unable to properly utilize pesticides because of several limiting factors, such as leaching and bioconversion, thereby damaging ecosystems and human health. In recent years, stimuli-responsive systems for pesticides delivery (SRSP) by nanotechnology demonstrated excellent promise in enhancing the effectiveness and safety of pesticides. SRSP are being developed with the goal of delivering precise amounts of active substances in response to biological needs and environmental factors. An in-depth analysis of carrier materials, design fundamentals, and classification of SRSP were provided. The adhesion of SRSP to crop tissue, absorption, translocation in and within plants, mobility in the soil, and toxicity were also discussed. The problems and shortcomings that need be resolved to accelerate the actual deployment of SRSP were highlighted in this review.

Biodegradable and Light-Responsive Polymeric Nanoparticles for Environmentally Safe Herbicide Delivery

The low utilization efficiency of pesticides exerts an adverse impact on the environment and human health. Polymer-related controlled-release nanosized pesticide systems provide a promising and efficient way to overcome the problem. In this work, a biodegradable and light-responsive amphiphilic polymer was synthesized via 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine-promoted polyesterification under mild conditions (low temperature, no vacuum, and no inert gas protection). We used this polymer to fabricate a light-triggered controlled-release nanosized pesticide system. The herbicide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), was selected as a model drug to show its potential as a controlled-release pesticide system. It was found that the 2,4-D-loaded polymeric nanoparticles were stable without the treatment of UV, while the release rate of 2,4-D from the nanoparticles gradually increased after treatment with UV light. Pot trial showed that the 2,4-D-loaded polymer nanoparticles showed a good herbicidal effect. Finally, toxicity studies suggested that the polymer can reduce toxicity to nontarget organisms.

O-carboxymethyl chitosan/gelatin/silver-copper hydroxyapatite composite films with enhanced antibacterial and wound healing properties

Wound dressing composite films of O-carboxymethyl chitosan (OCMC) and gelatin were prepared and mixed with hydroxyapatite (HA) composited with Silver (Ag) and Copper (Cu) at different concentrations. The chemical, thermal, morphological, and biological properties of the composite films were studied. The analysis by FTIR confirmed the presence of interactions between gelatin and OCMC, and at the same time, the polymer matrix interactions with Ag-Cu/HA complex. The inclusion of nanoparticle to the composite was associated with an improvement of the thermal stability, morphological roughness, a 9–12% more hydrophobic behavior (composite C1, C5, and C8), increase in antibacterial activity from 23.2 to 33.1% for gram negative bacteria and from 37.28 to 40.59% for gram positive bacteria, and with a cell viability greater than 100% for 24 and 72 h. The films obtained can serve as a wound healing dressing and regenerating biomaterial.

Development of Cationic Cellulose-Modified Bentonite-Alginate Nanocomposite Gels for Sustained Release of Alachlor

The nanocomposite gel prepared from nanoclay and natural polysaccharides showed a good sustained-release property. Herein, a cationic cellulose-modified bentonite-alginate nanocomposite gel was prepared and used to enhance the sustained release of alachlor. The underlying effect and mechanism of the structure of modified bentonite-alginate nanocomposite gels on the release behavior of alachlor were explored by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The results showed that the release of alachlor from the nanocomposite gels was dominated by Fickian diffusion and closely related to the adsorption capacity and permeability of the matrix. The cationic cellulose intercalated into the interlayer space of bentonite through an ion exchange reaction, which significantly enhanced the hydrophobicity of bentonite and its interaction with alachlor. The stacking aggregation of bentonite nanoplatelets and permeability of the gel network were decreased through the electrostatic interaction between cationic cellulose and alginate molecular chains, thus remarkably enhancing the sustained-release property of the nanocomposite gel. The release kinetics revealed that the release rate of alachlor from the nanocomposite gel first decreased and then increased as the content of bentonite and modified bentonite gradually increased. Also, the best sustained-release property of the nanocomposite gel was obtained at bentonite and modified bentonite additions of about 10%, under which the release time of 50% alachlor (T ₅₀) from bentonite-alginate and modified bentonite-alginate nanocomposite gels was 4.4 and 5.6 times longer than the release time from pure alginate gels, respectively.

A comparative study on physicochemical and micellar solubilization performance between monoglucosyl rebaudioside A and rebaudioside A

BACKGROUND

Rebaudioside A (RA) and its monoglucosyl derivative, as like rebaudioside D (RD) are the most popular stevia glycosides but possess poor solubility in water, which limited their application as edible surfactants, the applications as in micellar solubilization and drug delivery. Meanwhile, effect of the monoglucosyl attached to RA moiety remains unclear.

RESULTS

Monoglucosyl rebaudioside A (RAG1) was synthesized via hydrolyzing the transglycosylation product of RA with 95% of RA converted. RAG1 content in raw reaction mixture was as high as 69.5% of total glycosides, and harvested with a content of 88.2% by simple filtration. The RAG1 exhibited an aqueous solubility of 87 folds of RA or 391 folds of RD at 25 °C. The surface activity of RAG1 solution was higher than RA and invincible to RD. The RAG1 micelles promoted aqueous solubility of idebenone (IDE) up to 500 folds higher at 25 °C. The cumulative release rate of IDE encapsulated in RAG1 micelles was 777.5% or 456.7% higher of that of free IDE in simulated gastric/intestinal fluids in 14 h, respectively. The RAG1-IDE remained the same in 98 days at 25 °C.

CONCLUSION

The α-linked glucosyl to RA induced higher hydrophilicity and surface activity than that resulted by β-linked glucosyl, making RAG1 not only dramatically raise the aqueous solubility of RA, but also endow IDE folds higher in bioaccessibility, yet making the capsule stable at storage. The results would provide a new edible delivery nanocarrier for encapsulation of hydrophobic bioactive components. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Co-encapsulation of Egg-White-Derived Peptides (EWDP) and Curcumin within the Polysaccharide-Based Amphiphilic Nanoparticles for Promising Oral Bioavailability Enhancement: Role of EWDP

The comprehensive utilization of food-derived nutraceuticals with different polarities has been extremely restricted by their poor bioavailability and coexistence in a single system. This study aimed to fabricate a self-assembly of amphiphilic nanoparticles (NPs) for the hydrophilic EWDP and hydrophobic curcumin based on the carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) shell and γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) core. Notably, EWDP could cooperate with CMCS to yield superior colloidal properties with an excellent curcumin aqueous solubility and co-encapsulation capacity (>10%) for the NPs (pH 2.0-7.0). This phenomenon was mainly ascribed to the additional hydrogen-bonding network and hydrophobic interaction introduced by EWDP. Besides, the overall antioxidant activity, bioaccessibility, gastrointestinal stability, and Caco-2 cell absorption properties were significantly improved in the presence of EWDP (>20% increase). Therefore, EWDP could function as both a potential affinity agent and a nutrition enhancer to expand the co-delivery applications for diverse nutraceuticals with promising oral bioavailability enhancement in food and pharmaceutical areas.

Nano-enabled agrochemicals/materials: Potential human health impact, risk assessment, management strategies and future prospects

Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing technology that will have a significant impact on product development in the next few years. The technology is already being employed in cutting-edge cosmetic and healthcare products. Nanotechnology and nanoparticles have a strong potential for product and process innovation in the food industrial sector. This is already being demonstrated by food product availability made using nanotechnology. Nanotechnologies will have an impact on food security, packaging materials, delivery systems, bioavailability, and new disease detection materials in the food production chain, contributing to the UN Millennium Development Goals targets. Food products using nanoparticles are already gaining traction into the market, with an emphasis on online sales. This means that pre- and post-marketing regulatory frameworks and risk assessments must meet certain standards. There are potential advantages of nanotechnologies for agriculture, consumers and the food industry at large as they are with other new and growing technologies. However, little is understood about the safety implications of applying nanotechnologies to agriculture and incorporating nanoparticles into food. As a result, policymakers and scientists must move quickly, as regulatory systems appear to require change, and scientists should contribute to these adaptations. Their combined efforts should make it easier to reduce health and environmental impacts while also promoting the economic growth of nanotechnologies in the food supply chain. This review highlighted the benefits of a number of nano enabled agrochemicals/materials, the potential health impacts as well as the risk assessment and risk management for nanoparticles in the agriculture and food production chain.

Carboxymethyl chitosan incorporated with gliadin/phlorotannin nanoparticles enables the formation of new active packaging films

Advanced carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) based functional films were fabricated by involving some amounts of gliadin/phlorotannin nanoparticles (GPNPs) using a solution casting method. GPNPs were synthesized by an antisolvent precipitation approach, and they presented a spherical morphology with a mean diameter of 145.30 ± 2.06 nm. The effect of GPNPs concentration on the structural, physical, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of CMCS-GPNPs (C-G) functional films was evaluated. It was found that the added GPNPs were homogeneously distributed over the whole CMCS matrix, allowing to reduce the free volume of the nanocomposite matrix and subsequently improve the physical properties of the final film (evidenced by mechanical and water barrier properties). FT-IR spectra indicated the intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interaction, within the matrix of the nanocomposite films were increased. Impressively, the anti-ultraviolet properties, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial behaviors of the as-formed C-G functional films were greatly enhanced compared to the pure CMCS film. All these results suggested that our as-prepared C-G nanocomposite films could be a promising food packaging material.

Physicochemical properties of films produced using nanoemulsions stabilized by carboxymethyl chitosan-peptide conjugates and application in blueberry preservation

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh)-peptide conjugates were produced by grafting CMCh with peptides from hemp seed, maize and casein. The nanoemulsions stabilized by these conjugates had smaller droplet size and better emulsifying properties. Nanoemulsions stabilized by conjugates were used to develop active films containing Camellia essential oil and the effect of conjugation on physicochemical properties of resulting films was evaluated. Water vapor and oxygen barrier properties, tensile strength, flexibility, and temperature of endothermic peak increased 6.6-19.8% and 6.9-27.2%, 40.1-96.6%, 61.4-83.3% and 7.8-18.5%, respectively when the CMCh-peptide conjugates were used to emulsify the essential oil. The conjugation helped to form compact structure. All of the films containing essential oil emulsions stabilized by conjugates showed the ability to extend the shelf-life of blueberry by maintaining the firmness, reducing the weight loss and slowing down the formation of soluble solids.

Natural polysaccharides based self-assembled nanoparticles for biomedical applications - A review

In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) derived from the self-assembly of natural polysaccharides have shown great potential in the biomedical field. Here, we described several self-assembly modes of natural polysaccharides in detail, summarized the natural polysaccharides mostly used for self-assembly, and provided insights into the current applications and achievements of these self-assembled NPs. As one of the most widespread substances in nature, most natural polysaccharides exhibit advantages of biodegradability, low immunogenicity, low toxicity, and degradable properties. Therefore, they have been fully explored, and the application of chitosan, hyaluronic acid, alginate, starch, and their derivatives has been extensively studied, especially in the fields of biomedical. Polysaccharides based NPs were proved to improve the solubility of insoluble drugs, enhance tissue target ability and realize the controlled and sustained release of drugs. When modified by hydrophobic groups, the amphiphilic polysaccharides can self-assemble into NPs. Other driven forces of self-assembly include electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds. Up to the present, polysaccharides-based nanoparticles have been widely applied for tumor treatment, antibacterial application, gene therapy, photodynamic therapy and transporting insulin.

Advances in Controlled-Release Pesticide Formulations with Improved Efficacy and Targetability

Pesticides are commonly used in modern agriculture and are important for global food security. However, postapplication losses due to degradation, photolysis, evaporation, leaching, surface runoff, and other processes may substantially reduce their efficacy. Controlled-release formulations can achieve the permeation-regulated transfer of an active ingredient from a reservoir to a target surface. Thus, they can maintain an active ingredient at a predetermined concentration for a specified period. This can reduce degradation and dissipation and other losses and has the potential to improve efficacy. Recent developments in controlled-release technology have adapted the concepts of intelligence and precision from the pharmaceutical industry. In this review, we present recent advances in the development of controlled-release formulations and discuss details of the preparation methods, material improvements, and application technologies.

Solution properties of N-(2-allyl-butyl ether)-O-carboxymethyl chitosan and N-(2-allyl-isooctyl ether)-O-carboxymethyl chitosan

pH-sensitive and amphiphilic chitosan derivatives can be used as hydrophobic drug carriers, and their rheological properties play a key role in their performance. In this paper, two pH-responsive and amphiphilic chitosan derivatives, N-(2-allyl-butyl glycidyl ether)-O-carboxymethyl chitosan (HBCC) and N-(2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether)-O-carboxymethyl chitosan (H2ECC) were synthesized, and their rheological properties were studied. The influence of parameters including concentrations of HBCC and H2ECC, the degree of substitution, solution pH, and [Ca²⁺] on the rheological properties were investigated. The results showed that the overlap and entanglement concentration of HBCC and H2ECC was ca. 1.7 wt% and 5 wt%, respectively. The dilute and semidilute solutions showed Newtonian behavior. Above 5 wt%, strong networks formed, and shear-thinning behavior appeared at high shear rates (>10 s^-1) for entangled solutions. A high degree of substitution and pH near the isoelectric points of HBCC and H2ECC corresponded to a low viscosity and viscoelasticity. In addition, Ca²⁺ played a shielding effect on the -COO^- groups at low concentrations (<10 mmol/L), whereas it acted as a cross-linker when [Ca²⁺] ≥ 20 mmol/L. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds were examined by molecular dynamics simulations. The results provide new information related to the application of HBCC and H2ECC for hydrophobic drug packaging and transportation.

Nano-Enable Materials Promoting Sustainability and Resilience in Modern Agriculture

Intensive conventional agriculture and climate change have induced severe ecological damages and threatened global food security, claiming a reorientation of agricultural management and public policies towards a more sustainable development model. In this context, nanomaterials promise to support this transition by promoting mitigation, enhancing productivity, and reducing contamination. This review gathers recent research innovations on smart nanoformulations and delivery systems improving crop protection and plant nutrition, nanoremediation strategies for contaminated soils, nanosensors for plant health and food quality and safety monitoring, and nanomaterials as smart food-packaging. It also highlights the impact of engineered nanomaterials on soil microbial communities, and potential environmental risks, along with future research directions. Although large-scale production and in-field testing of nano-agrochemicals are still ongoing, the collected information indicates improvements in uptake, use efficiency, targeted delivery of the active ingredients, and reduction of leaching and pollution. Nanoremediation seems to have a low negative impact on microbial communities while promoting biodiversity. Nanosensors enable high-resolution crop monitoring and sustainable management of the resources, while nano-packaging confers catalytic, antimicrobial, and barrier properties, preserving food safety and preventing food waste. Though, the application of nanomaterials to the agri-food sector requires a specific risk assessment supporting proper regulations and public acceptance.

Carboxymethyl chitosan-pullulan edible films enriched with galangal essential oil: Characterization and application in mango preservation

This study aimed to develop an active edible film based on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and pullulan (Pul) incorporated with galangal essential oil (GEO) by the casting method. And their physical properties, structural and preservation effect on mangoes were characterized. The CMCS/Pul ratio was determined to be 2.5:2.5 after the optimization of physical properties, mechanical properties and barrier properties of the blend film. The results of FT-IR and XRD showed that hydroxyl groups of Pul interacted with the carboxyl groups of CMCS and the blend films had good compatibility. Good thermal stability of CMCS/Pul-GEO films was further proven by TGA curves. The CMCS/Pul-8 %GEO film showed effective preservations on mango fruits during 15 days of storage at 25 ± 1 °C, based on the characterization by fruits weight loss, firmness, titratable acidity, soluble solids. Consequently, CMCS/Pul-GEO blend films may be a promising eco-friendly packaging material for the industrial application of fruit preservation.

Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks prepared from castor oil-based waterborne polyurethanes and carboxymethyl chitosan

A series of vegetable oil-based waterborne polyurethane composites were prepared through construction of novel semi-interpenetrating polymers network using carboxymethyl chitosan (CA) as the secondary polymer phase. The effects of CA contents on storage stability, and particle size distribution of the composite dispersions and thermal stability, mechanical properties and surface wettability of composite films were investigated and discussed. The results showed that the composite dispersions displayed excellent storage stability and the biomass contents of resulting films were high up to 80 %. A significant increase in crosslinking density and glass transition temperature of the composite films were observed as the CA contents increased, which was attributed to the increasing hard segment of films and strong hydrogen bonding interaction between polyurethanes and CA. This work provided a simple method to tailor the performance of environmentally friendly vegetable oil-based waterborne polyurethane, which could find application in the field of coatings, adhesives, ink and so on.

"Umbrella" Structure Trisiloxane Surfactant: Synthesis and Application for Reverse Flotation of Phosphorite Ore in Phosphate Fertilizer Production

Phosphorite is generally used in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer and plays a vital role in the development of agricultural and food production. Nonetheless, how to obtain phosphorite concentrates efficiently and sustainably has become an urgent problem. In this study, a newly designed trisiloxane surfactant, N-(2-Aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrisiloxane (AATS), has been prepared and utilized as an emerging collector for reverse flotation of phosphorite ore. Its collecting ability was compared with the conventional surfactant 1-dodecamine (DDA). In the collector concentration tests, AATS with lower concentrations showed stronger collecting ability for quartz. In the pH tests, AATS always performed better than DDA in the acidic or alkaline condition. In bench-scale flotation experiments, the P₂O₅ recovery of phosphorite concentrates with 150 g/t AATS was 10.77% higher than that with 300 g/t DDA, which proved that AATS can be applied to the sustainable production of phosphorite concentrates. For a 4000 t/d phosphorite ore processing plant, the profit could be increased 7,014,702.07 USD every year by using AATS as the collector. Therefore, this work provides a promising approach to enhance the production efficiency of phosphate fertilizer and to promote the sustainable development of agriculture.

Coumarin-Containing Light-Responsive Carboxymethyl Chitosan Micelles as Nanocarriers for Controlled Release of Pesticide

Currently, controlled release formulations (CRFs) of pesticides in response to biotic and/or abiotic stimuli have shown great potential for providing “on-demand” smart release of loaded active ingredients. In this study, amphiphilic biopolymers were prepared by introducing hydrophobic (7-diethylaminocoumarin-4-yl)methyl succinate (DEACMS) onto the main chain of hydrophilic carboxymethylchitosan (CMCS) via the formation of amide bonds which were able to self-assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous media and were utilized as light-responsive nanocarriers for the controlled release of pesticides. FTIR and NMR characterizations confirmed the successful synthesis of the CMCS-DEACMS conjugate. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) decreased with the increase in the substitution of DEACMS on CMCS, which ranged from 0.013 to 0.042 mg/mL. Upon irradiation under simulated sunlight, the hydrodynamic diameter, morphology, photophysical properties and photolysis were researched by means of dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Moreover, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was used as a model pesticide and encapsulated into the CMCS-DEACMS micelles. In these micelle formulations, the release of 2,4-D was promoted upon simulated sunlight irradiation, during which the coumarin moieties were cleaved from the CMCS backbone, resulting in a shift of the hydrophilic–hydrophobic balance and destabilization of the micelles. Additionally, bioassay studies suggested that this 2,4-D contained which micelles showed good bioactivity on the target plant without harming the nontarget plant. Thereby, the light-responsive CMCS-DEACMS micelles bearing photocleavable coumarin moieties provide a smart delivery platform for agrochemicals.
