Abstract
BACKGROUND Artificial intelligence (AI) for ultrasound scanning in regional anaesthesia is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field. There is a risk that work could be undertaken in parallel by different elements of the community but with a lack of knowledge transfer between disciplines, leading to repetition and diverging methodologies. This scoping review aimed to identify and map the available literature on the accuracy and utility of AI systems for ultrasound scanning in regional anaesthesia. METHODS A literature search was conducted using Medline, Embase, CINAHL, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library. Clinical trial registries, a registry of doctoral theses, regulatory authority databases, and websites of learned societies in the field were searched. Online commercial sources were also reviewed. RESULTS In total, 13,014 sources were identified; 116 were included for full-text review. A marked change in AI techniques was noted in 2016-17, from which point on the predominant technique used was deep learning. Methods of evaluating accuracy are variable, meaning it is impossible to compare the performance of one model with another. Evaluations of utility are more comparable, but predominantly gained from the simulation setting with limited clinical data on efficacy or safety. Study methodology and reporting lack standardisation. CONCLUSIONS There is a lack of structure to the evaluation of accuracy and utility of AI for ultrasound scanning in regional anaesthesia, which hinders rigorous appraisal and clinical uptake. A framework for consistent evaluation is needed to inform model evaluation, allow comparison between approaches/models, and facilitate appropriate clinical adoption.

Abstract
The negative effect of caponization on the structural, geometric and mechanical parameters of femur and tibia has been shown in a few studies. Nevertheless, its influence on tibia bone microarchitecture is still largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of castration on the microstructural parameters of the trabecular and compact bone of tibia bone in crossbred chickens. The experiment involved 96 roosters derived from crossing Yellowleg Partridge hens ([Formula: see text]-33) and Rhode Island Red cockerels (R-11) fattened until the 16th, 20th and 24th week of life. Animals were randomly divided into 2 groups of 48 each. Group I (control) consisted of intact roosters and group II (experimental) consisted of birds subjected to caponization at the 8th week of age. The castration surgery had no influence on some properties within compact bone such as osteon diameter On.Dm, osteon perimeter On.Pm, osteon area On.Ar, osteocyte lacunar number Ot.Lc.N, osteon bone area On.B.Ar, osteon wall thickness On.W.Th as well as thick-mature collagen content in all analyzed age groups of animals. Nevertheless, our results demonstrate that castration caused a decrease of Haversian canal area Hc.Ar, osteocyte lacunar area Ot.Lc.Ar and osteocyte lacunar porosity Ot.Lc.Po among the 16-week-old birds, decrease of Haversian canal perimeter Hc.Pm and increase of fraction of bone area On.B.Ar/On.Ar among 16- and 24-week-old individuals and also an increase of osteocyte lacunar density Ot.Lc.Dn in the osteons of the oldest roosters. Additionally, some microstructural parameters of trabecular bone show the negative effect of caponization. The youngest 16-week-old capons were characterized by thinnin the trabecular in the epiphysis part of tibia. Moreover, in the case of 24-week-old, there is an increase in the trabecular separation Tb.Sp with simultaneous decrease of trabecular number Tb.N compared to roosters, which may suggest the increase of the bone resorption among the oldest individuals. The increased bone turnover in the epiphysis part of the tibia bone also indicates changes in the collagen fibers distribution, where among 20-week-old animals there is a decrease in the content of immature thin collagen fibers with simultaneous increase in the content of mature thick collagen fibers. Furthermore, among the oldest 24-week-old individuals we can observe the increased thick-to-thin collagen ratio, which may be a sign of slowing down in bone formation.

Abstract
The presented study focuses on assessing the effect of caponization on the densitometric, osteometric, geometric and biomechanical parameters of tibial bones in crossbred chickens. The study was carried out on 96 hybrids between Yellowleg Partridge hens (Ż-33) and Rhode Island Red cockerels (R-11) aged 16 weeks, 20 weeks and 24 weeks. Birds were randomly assigned to 2 groups-the control group (n = 48; which consisted of intact roosters) and the experimental group (n = 48, which consisted of individuals subjected to caponization at the age of 8 weeks). The caponization had no effect on the densitometric, osteometric and geometric parameters (except the horizontal internal diameter of 16-week-old individuals) of tibia bone, as well as the content of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and the Ca/P ratio in the bone mineral fraction in all analyzed age groups of animals. However, it contributes to a lower percentage of ash in the bones of capons at 20 and 24 weeks of age compared to cockerels. On the contrary, some mechanical and material parameters show the negative effect of caponization. Ultimate load and bending moment decreased in capons in all of the analyzed age groups of animals and yield load, stiffness and ultimate stress also decreased but only in the group of 20-week-old and 24-week-old individuals. This can contribute to the weakening of the capon bones, and in the perspective of prolonged maintenance to their deformation and even fracture.

Abstract
The phase 1b 16-BCNI-001/CTRIAL-IE 16-02 CyBorD-DARA trial investigated the combination of Daratumumab with cyclophosphamide, bortezomib and dexamethasone in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM), followed by autologous stem cell transplantation and Daratumumab maintenance. CR/sCR rates were 50% after transplant and 62.5% at end of treatment. The overall percentage of patients achieving complete response or better was 77.8%. Progression-free survival rate at end of maintenance was 81.3% and estimated 2-year overall survival was 88.9%. 37.5% of patients demonstrated sustained MRD negativity to a level of 10-5 from transplant to analysis at EOT. In this phase 1b study, we have shown CyBorD-DARA to be an effective and well-tolerated immunomodulatory agent-free regiment in transplant-eligible NDMM.

Abstract
Background: The risk of cardiovascular disease in type 1 diabetes remains extremely high, despite marked advances in blood glucose control and even the widespread use of cholesterol synthesis inhibitors. Thus, a deeper understanding of insulin regulation of cholesterol metabolism, and its disruption in type 1 diabetes, could reveal better treatment strategies. Methods: To define the mechanisms by which insulin controls plasma cholesterol levels, we knocked down the insulin receptor, FoxO1, and the key bile acid synthesis enzyme, CYP8B1. We measured bile acid composition, cholesterol absorption, and plasma cholesterol. In parallel, we measured markers of cholesterol absorption and synthesis in humans with type 1 diabetes treated with ezetimibe and statins in a double-blind crossover study. Results: Mice with hepatic deletion of the insulin receptor showed marked increases in 12α-hydroxylated bile acids (12HBAs), cholesterol absorption, and plasma cholesterol. This phenotype was entirely reversed by hepatic deletion of FoxO1. FoxO1 is inhibited by insulin, and required for the production of 12HBAs, which promote intestinal cholesterol absorption and suppress hepatic cholesterol synthesis. Knockdown of Cyp8b1 normalized 12HBA levels and completely prevented hypercholesterolemia in mice with hepatic deletion of the insulin receptor (n=5-30) as well as mouse models of type 1 diabetes (n=5-22). In parallel, the cholesterol absorption inhibitor, ezetimibe, normalized cholesterol absorption and LDL-cholesterol in patients with type 1 diabetes as well as, or better than, the cholesterol synthesis inhibitor, simvastatin (n=20). Conclusions: Insulin, by inhibiting FoxO1 in the liver, reduces 12HBAs, cholesterol absorption, and plasma cholesterol levels. Thus, type 1 diabetes leads to a unique set of derangements in cholesterol metabolism, with increased absorption rather than synthesis. These derangements are reversed by ezetimibe, but not statins, which are currently the first line of lipid-lowering treatment in type 1 diabetes. Taken together, these data suggest that a personalized approach to lipid lowering in type 1 diabetes may be more effective and highlight the need for further studies specifically in this group of patients.

Abstract
Solid wettability is especially important for biomaterials and implants in the context of microbial adhesion to their surfaces. This adhesion can be inhibited by changes in biomaterial surface roughness and/or its hydrophilic–hydrophobic balance. The surface hydrophilic–hydrophobic balance can be changed by the specifics of the surface treatment (proper conditions of surface preparation) or adsorption of different substances. From the practical point of view, in systems that include biomaterials and implants, the adsorption of compounds characterized by bacteriostatic or bactericidal properties is especially desirable. Substances that are able to change the surface properties of a given solid as a result of their adsorption and possess at least bacteriostatic properties include sucrose ester surfactants. Thus, in our studies the analysis of a specific surface treatment effect (proper passivation conditions) on a biomaterial alloy’s (Ti6Al4V ELI, Grade 23) properties was performed based on measurements of the contact angles of water, formamide and diiodomethane. In addition, the changes in the studied solid surface’s properties resulting from the sucrose monodecanoate (SMD) and sucrose monolaurate (SML) molecules’ adsorption at the solid–water interface were also analyzed. For the analysis, the values of the contact angles of aqueous solutions of SMD and SML were measured at 293 K, and the surface tensions of the aqueous solutions of studied surfactants measured earlier were tested. From the above-mentioned tests, it was found that water environment significantly influences the components and parameters of Ti6Al4V ELI’s surface tension. It also occurred that the addition of both SMD and SML to water (separately) caused a drop in the water contact angle on Ti6Al4V ELI’s surface. However, the sucrose monolaurate surfactant is characterized by a slightly better tendency towards adsorption at the solid–water interface in the studied system compared to sucrose monodecanoate. Additionally, based on the components and parameters of Ti6Al4V ELI’s surface tension calculated from the proper values of components and parameters of model liquids, it was possible to predict the wettability of Ti6Al4V ELI using the aqueous solutions of SMD and SML at various concentrations in the solution.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine shell quality of eggs laid by some strains of native breed hens of different ages, with special consideration of their effect on lysozyme concentration and enzymatic activity. Evaluation was made of the eggshells from 6 breeds/strains of laying hens covered by the gene pool protection program in Poland: Greenleg Partridge (Z-11), Yellowleg Partridge (Ż-33), Rhode Island Red (R-11), Rhode Island White (A-33), Sussex (S-66), and Leghorn (H-22). Significant (P ≤ 0.01) differences were established for all the shell quality characteristics between hen strains. As the birds aged, shell weight and porosity increased, and shell compression strength decreased in all the experimental groups. Lysozyme content was lowest in white-shelled eggs (H-22) and highest in cream-colored and light brown eggs (Z-11, Ż-33, and R-11). Furthermore, age of hens had a greater effect on lysozyme concentration and activity in the eggs than on shell quality traits. Regardless of the layer genotype, eggs from older hens showed higher lysozyme concentration and enzymatic activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in cholesterol absorption and cholesterol synthesis may promote dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). OBJECTIVE To assess cholesterol synthesis and absorption in lean individuals, obese individuals, and individuals with T2DM. METHODS We measured lathosterol and lanosterol (markers of cholesterol synthesis) as well as campesterol and β-sitosterol (markers of cholesterol absorption) in the serum of 15 to 26 years old individuals with T2DM (n = 95), as well as their lean (n = 98) and obese (n = 92) controls. RESULTS Individuals with T2DM showed a 51% increase in lathosterol and a 65% increase in lanosterol compared to lean controls. Similarly, obese individuals showed a 31% increase in lathosterol compared to lean controls. Lathosterol and lanosterol were positively correlated with body mass index, fasting insulin and glucose, serum triglycerides, and C-reactive protein, and negatively correlated with HDL-cholesterol. In contrast, campesterol and β-sitosterol were not altered in individuals with T2DM. Moreover, campesterol and β-sitosterol were negatively correlated with body mass index, fasting insulin, and C-reactive protein and were positively correlated with HDL-cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents and young adults with T2DM show evidence of increased cholesterol synthesis compared to non-diabetic lean controls. These findings suggest that T2DM may promote cardiovascular disease by increasing cholesterol synthesis, and provide additional rationale for the use of cholesterol synthesis inhibitors in this group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To optimize treatment and prevent cardiovascular disease in subjects with type 1 diabetes, it is important to determine how cholesterol metabolism changes with type 1 diabetes. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to compare plasma levels of campesterol and β-sitosterol, markers of cholesterol absorption, as well as lathosterol, a marker of cholesterol synthesis, in youth with and without type 1 diabetes. METHODS Serum samples were obtained from adolescent subjects with type 1 diabetes (n = 175, mean age 15.2 years, mean duration of diabetes 8.2 years) and without diabetes (n = 74, mean age 15.4 years). Campesterol, β-sitosterol, and lathosterol, were measured using targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, compared between groups, and correlated with the available cardiometabolic variables. RESULTS Campesterol and β-sitosterol levels were 30% higher in subjects with type 1 diabetes and positively correlated with hemoglobin A1c levels. In contrast, lathosterol levels were 20% lower in subjects with type 1 diabetes and positively correlated with triglycerides, body mass index, and systolic blood pressure. CONCLUSION Plasma markers suggest that cholesterol absorption is increased, whereas cholesterol synthesis is decreased in adolescent subjects with type 1 diabetes. Further studies to address the impact of these changes on the relative efficacy of cholesterol absorption and synthesis inhibitors in subjects with type 1 diabetes are urgently needed.

Abstract
1. In this study, 240 ISA Brown hens were fed diets containing different levels of hybrid rye, and the influence of xylanase addition on laying performance and egg quality was evaluated. 2. Birds were allocated to 10 treatment groups with 12 replicates (cages) of two hens and were fed, from week 26 to 50, isocaloric and isonitrogenous experimental diets. A 5 × 2 experimental arrangement was applied, using diets with increasing level of rye (0%, 10%, 15%, 20% or 25%) with or without xylanase supplementation (200 mg/kg of feed; Ronozyme WX (CT) with minimum xylanase activity of 1,000 FXU/g). 3. Increasing dietary level of rye did not affect daily mass of eggs, mean egg weight or feed conversion ratio (P > 0.05). Laying rate decreased in all groups fed with rye. Egg and eggshell quality indices were unaffected by dietary rye grain (P > 0.05); however, rye inclusion significantly decreased yolk colour on the DSM scale (P < 0.05). In comparison with the control group, high dietary levels of rye (25%) significantly increased viscosity of small intestine content (P < 0.05). Diet supplementation with xylanase had no significant effect on egg production indices and egg quality (except for yolk colour) but decreased the viscosity of intestinal content in laying hens fed high levels of rye (P < 0.05). 4. The results of this experiment suggest that rye may be incorporated to a level of 25% in the diet of laying hens without any strong negative effect on egg performance, while xylanase added to high-rye grain reduced the viscosity of intestinal content; however, it did not positively affect the laying performance or egg quality.

Abstract
Solid–liquid interface properties play a crucial role in the adsorption and adhesion of different microorganisms to the solid. There are some methods to inhibit microorganisms’ adsorption at the solid–liquid interface and their adhesion to the solid. These methods can be divided into bulk phase and surface modification. They are often based on the surfactants’ effect on the wettability of the solid in a given system, due to the fact that adsorption and wetting properties of the food additive antimicrobial surfactants (sucrose monolaurate and sucrose monodecanoate as well as some other sugar-based ones (n-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside, n-dodecyl-β-d-glucopyranoside, n-dodecyl-β-d-maltoside)) in the solid-aqueous solution of surfactant-air system were considered. Quantitative description of adsorption of the studied compounds at the solid–liquid interface was made based on the contact angle of the aqueous solutions of studied surfactants on polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, poly(methyl methacrylate), polyamide and quartz surface and their surface tension. From the above-mentioned considerations, it can be seen that during the wettability process of the studied solids, surfactants are oriented in a specific direction depending on the type of the solid and surfactant. This specific orientation and adsorption of surfactant molecules at the solid–water interface cause changes of the solid surface properties and its wettability, which was successfully predicted in the studied systems.

Abstract
The adsorption of surfactants at the water-air and solid-water interfaces and their wetting properties decide their practical applications. Therefore the adsorption of monorhamnolipid, surfactin, n-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside, n-dodecyl-β-d-glucopyranoside, n-dodecyl-β-d-maltoside, sucrose monodecanoate, sucrose monododecanoate, Tween 20, Tween 60, and Tween 80 at the water-air, polytetrafluoroethylene-water, polyethylene-water, poly(methyl methacrylate)-water, polyamide-water, and quartz-water interfaces, their tendency to form micelles as well as their wetting properties, were considered in the light of their microscopic properties. For this purpose, the components and parameters of the surfactant tail and head, water and solids surface tension, and surfactant contactable area with adherent medium were applied for prediction of surfactant-surfactant and surfactant-solid interactions through the water phase with regard to their adsorption, micellization, and wetting processes. Next, the Gibbs free energy of interactions was compared to the Gibbs free energy of surfactant adsorption at the water-air and solid-water interfaces as well as the micellization. It appeared that from the surfactant-surfactant and surfactant-solid interactions through the water phase determined on the basis of the tail and head of surfactant surface tension, it is possible to predict the surfactant tendency to adsorb at the water-air and solid-water interfaces, as well as to form micelles.

Abstract
Recommendations on screening and nutritional support for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) have been presented by international nutritional societies, but nutritional practices remain poorly standardized. Following the general policy of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) to standardize transplantation procedures, the Complications and Quality of Life Working Party and Nursing Research Group carried out a survey among all EBMT centers about their current nutritional practices. The aim of this study was to better understand current practices, differences from available guidelines, and possible barriers for recommended nutritional therapy. Responses from 90 centers (19%) from 23 countries were received. We observed a marked variability in nutritional care between EBMT centers and a substantial lack of standardized operating procedures in screening patients for malnutrition and management of gastrointestinal GVHD. Furthermore, our study confirmed neutropenic diet as standard of care in most centers as well a preference for parenteral nutritional support over enteral. On the basis of these findings, future EBMT efforts will focus on better implementation of international nutritional guidelines into clinical practice.

Abstract
1. The effects of changes in technical efficiency on the increase of broiler production are presented for the period 1994-2013 based on the panel data from seven farms located in southern and central Poland. A total of 766 cycles were analysed. 2. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used to assess the changes of output elasticities as well as technical changes in broiler production, for 5-year sub-periods separately. 3. Technical indices of broiler production significantly improved between years 1994-2013: feed conversion ratio decreased from 2.50 kg/kg to 1.78 kg/kg, mortality rate from 8.8% to 4.0% and daily weight gain increased from 37.1 g/d to 58.7 g/d, respectively. 4. Before accession to the EU, there was a substantial increase of fixed capital connected with modernisation of buildings and equipment. In the period 1994-2013, inputs of fixed capital per kilogram of livestock increased by 72% and at the same time the input of labour decreased by 56%. 5. Technical changes in years 1994-1998 contributed to a rapid production increase at a rate of 4.6% annually and only by up to 0.7% annually during 2009-2013. The slowdown of production rate increase after 2009 was partially caused by decreasing the stocking density.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pancreatic- and brain-derived hormone amylin promotes negative energy balance and is receiving increasing attention as a promising obesity therapeutic. However, the neurobiological substrates mediating amylin's effects are not fully characterized. We postulated that amylin acts in the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg), an understudied neural processing hub for reward and homeostatic feeding signals. METHODS We used immunohistochemical and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses to examine expression of the amylin receptor complex in rat LDTg tissue. Behavioral experiments were performed to examine the mechanisms underlying the hypophagic effects of amylin receptor activation in the LDTg. RESULTS Immunohistochemical and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses show expression of the amylin receptor complex in the LDTg. Activation of LDTg amylin receptors by the agonist salmon calcitonin dose-dependently reduces body weight, food intake, and motivated feeding behaviors. Acute pharmacological studies and longer-term adeno-associated viral knockdown experiments indicate that LDTg amylin receptor signaling is physiologically and potentially preclinically relevant for energy balance control. Finally, immunohistochemical data indicate that LDTg amylin receptors are expressed on gamma-aminobutyric acidergic neurons, and behavioral results suggest that local gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor signaling mediates the hypophagia after LDTg amylin receptor activation. CONCLUSIONS These findings identify the LDTg as a novel nucleus with therapeutic potential in mediating amylin's effects on energy balance through gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor signaling.

Abstract
Succinic acid is a platform chemical of recognized industrial value and accordingly faces a continuous challenge to enable manufacturing from most attractive raw materials. It is mainly produced from glucose, using microbial fermentation. Here, we explore and optimize succinate production from sucrose, a globally applied substrate in biotechnology, using the rumen bacterium Basfia succiniciproducens DD1. As basis of the strain optimization, the yet unknown sucrose metabolism of the microbe was studied, using 13C metabolic flux analyses. When grown in batch culture on sucrose, the bacterium exhibited a high succinate yield of 1molmol-1 and a by-product spectrum, which did not match the expected PTS-mediated sucrose catabolism. This led to the discovery of a fructokinase, involved in sucrose catabolism. The flux approach unraveled that the fructokinase and the fructose PTS both contribute to phosphorylation of the fructose part of sucrose. The contribution of the fructokinase reduces the undesired loss of the succinate precursor PEP into pyruvate and into pyruvate-derived by-products and enables increased succinate production, exclusively via the reductive TCA cycle branch. These findings were used to design superior producers. Mutants, which (i) overexpress the beneficial fructokinase, (II) lack the competing fructose PTS, and (iii) combine both traits, produce significantly more succinate. In a fed-batch process, B. succiniciproducens ΔfruA achieved a titer of 71gL-1 succinate and a yield of 2.5molmol-1 from sucrose.

Abstract
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an aggressive method of treatment affecting patient's homeostasis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the initial nutritional status of HSCT patients and nutritional status in early posttransplantation period. The prospective study included 100 consecutive patients with hematological malignancies subjected to HSCT. The nutritional status evaluation was made using the nutritional screening scales, anthropometric and biochemical parameters, as well. On the day +7 following HSCT significant decrease in concentration of total protein (5.8 g/dl), albumin (3.6 g/dl) and transferrin (165 mg/dl) were observed (P < 0.001), although the mean body mass/BMI were within the normal range. On the day +14, the biochemical parameters of the nutritional status were even lower (P < 0.001). Poorer nutritional status was associated with worse performance status and mucositis escalation. The adequate nutritional support plan is important element of the whole transplantation procedure.

Abstract
Amylin is produced in the pancreas and the brain, and acts centrally to reduce feeding and body weight. Recent data show that amylin can act in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to reduce palatable food intake and promote negative energy balance, but the behavioral mechanisms by which these effects occur are not fully understood. The ability of VTA amylin signaling to reduce intake of specific palatable macronutrients (fat or carbohydrate) was tested in rats in several paradigms, including one-bottle acceptance tests, two-bottle choice tests, and a free-choice diet. Data show that VTA amylin receptor activation with the amylin receptor agonist salmon calcitonin (sCT) preferentially and potently reduces intake of fat, with more variable suppression of sucrose intake. Intake of a non-nutritive sweetener is also decreased by intra-VTA administration of sCT. As several feeding-related signals that act in the mesolimbic system also impact motivated behaviors besides feeding, we tested the hypothesis that the suppressive effects of amylin signaling in the VTA extend to other motivationally relevant stimuli. Results show that intra-VTA sCT reduces water intake in response to central administration of the dipsogenic peptide angiotensin II, but has no effect on ad libitum water intake in the absence of food. Importantly, open field and social interaction studies show that VTA amylin signaling does not produce anxiety-like behaviors. Collectively, these findings reveal a novel ability of VTA amylin receptor activation to alter palatable macronutrient intake, and also demonstrate a broader role of VTA amylin signaling for the control of motivated ingestive behaviors beyond feeding.

Abstract
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an incretin hormone released from intestinal L-cells in response to food entering into the gastrointestinal tract. GLP-1-based pharmaceuticals improve blood glucose regulation and reduce feeding. Specific macronutrients, when ingested, may trigger GLP-1 secretion and enhance the effects of systemic sitagliptin, a pharmacological inhibitor of DPP-IV (an enzyme that rapidly degrades GLP-1). In particular, macronutrient constituents found in dairy foods may act as potent secretagogues for GLP-1, and acute preclinical trials show that ingestion of dairy protein may represent a promising adjunct behavioral therapy in combination with sitagliptin. To test this hypothesis further, chow-maintained or high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese rats received daily IP injections of sitagliptin (6mg/kg) or saline in combination with a twice-daily 8ml oral gavage of milk protein concentrate (MPC; 80/20% casein/whey; 0.5kcal/ml), soy protein (non-dairy control; 0.5kcal/ml) or 0.9% NaCl for two months. Food intake and body weight were recorded every 24-48h; blood glucose regulation was examined at baseline and at 3 and 6.5weeks via a 2h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT; 25% glucose; 2g/kg). MPC and soy protein significantly suppressed cumulative caloric intake in HFD but not chow-maintained rats. AUC analyses for OGTT show suppression in glycemia by sitagliptin with MPC or soy in chow- and HFD-maintained rats, suggesting that chronic ingestion of dairy or soy proteins may augment endogenous GLP-1 signaling and the glycemic- and food intake-suppressive effects of DPP-IV inhibition.

Abstract
The beneficial glycemic and food intake-suppressive effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) have made this neuroendocrine system a leading target for pharmacological approaches to the treatment of diabetes and obesity. One strategy to increase the activity of endogenous GLP-1 is to prevent the rapid degradation of the hormone by the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV). However, despite the expression of both DPP-IV and GLP-1 in the brain, and the clear importance of central GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) signaling for glycemic and energy balance control, the metabolic effects of central inhibition of DPP-IV activity are unclear. To test whether hindbrain DPP-IV inhibition suppresses blood glucose, feeding, and body weight gain, the effects of 4th intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of the FDA-approved DPP-IV inhibitor sitagliptin were evaluated. Results indicate that hindbrain delivery of sitagliptin improves glycemic control in a GLP-1R-dependent manner, suggesting that this effect is due at least in part to increased endogenous brainstem GLP-1 activity after sitagliptin administration. Furthermore, 4th ICV injection of sitagliptin reduced 24h body weight gain and energy intake, with a selective suppression of high-fat diet, but not chow, intake. These data reveal a novel role for hindbrain GLP-1R activation in glycemic control and also demonstrate that DPP-IV inhibition in the caudal brainstem promotes negative energy balance.

Abstract
Abstract. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of particle size of a dietary Ca source on egg production and eggshell quality when added to hens' diets that have different levels of calcium. The experiment was carried out on 216 ISA Brown hens (25 to 70 weeks of age), allocated to 9 groups of 12 replicates (cages), with two birds in each cage. A 3 × 3 factorial arrangement was used, with three dietary levels of calcium (3.20, 3.70 and 4.20 %) and three levels of dietary substitutions (0, 25 and 50 %) of fine particles of limestone (FPL, diameter 0.2–0.6 mm) with large particles of limestone (LPL, diameter 1.0–1.4 mm) as a Ca source. The level of Ca in the diet had no effect on egg production, mean egg weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio or eggshell quality parameters (P > 0.05). Substitution of FPL with LPL did not affect laying performance indices or eggshell quality at 30, 43 and 53 weeks of age (P > 0.05); however, it increased (P < 0.05) eggshell percentage, thickness, density and breaking strength in older hens (69 weeks of age). In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrated that a level of 3.20 % Ca in a layer's diet is sufficient through the entire laying cycle to maintain good egg production and eggshell quality and that partial (25 or 50 %) substitution of fine- with large-particle limestone can, irrespective of the level of Ca in the diet, improve eggshell quality in aged laying hens.

Abstract
Cancer, being in fact a generalized disease involving the whole organism, is most frequently associated with metabolic deregulation, a latent inflammatory state and anorexia of various degrees. The pathogenesis of this disorder is complex, with multiple dilemmas remaining unsolved. The clinical consequences of the above-mentioned disturbances include cancer-related cachexia and anorexia-cachexia syndrome. These complex clinical entities worsen the prognosis, and lead to deterioration of the quality of life and performance status, and thus require multimodal treatment. Optimal therapy should include nutritional support coupled with pharmacotherapy targeted at underlying pathomechanisms of cachexia. Nevertheless, many issues still need explanation, and efficacious and comprehensive therapy of cancer-related cachexia remains a future objective.

Abstract
1. A total of 192 ISA Brown hens were given diets containing a high concentration of maize dried distiller's grains with solubles (DDGS) and the effect of selected feed additives on laying performance and egg quality was determined. 2. Birds were allocated to 8 treatment groups with 12 replicates (cages) of two hens and were given, from week 26 to 55, iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous experimental diets with or without a high concentration of DDGS (200 g/kg). The diet containing DDGS was not supplemented or supplemented with enzymes (xylanase and phytase), sodium butyrate, probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus salivarius) and a mixture of herbal extracts (Taraxaci siccum, Urticae siccum and Salviae siccum), inulin or chitosan. 3. The inclusion of DDGS in the diet had no effect on number of eggs produced, total egg mass, mean egg weight, feed intake or feed conversion ratio. Egg and eggshell quality parameters were also unaffected by dietary DDGS. The yolk colour score (points in Roche scale) was significantly increased by DDGS inclusion. DDGS in the diet caused some changes in the yolk lipid profile that were rather unfavourable from a dietary perspective (an increase of cholesterol content, and PUFA n-6/PUFA n-3 ratio). 4. During the experimental period (26-55 weeks of age) supplementation of the diet containing a high concentration of DDGS with enzymes, inulin as well as chitosan, increased number of eggs produced and daily egg mass. In older hens (50 weeks of age) inulin positively affected eggshell quality parameters, i.e. shell percentage, thickness and density. Diet supplementation with herb extracts, inulin or chitosan, decreased the content of cholesterol in yolks. 5. The results of this study suggest that DDGS may be incorporated up to a concentration of 200 g/kg in the diet of laying hens without any negative effects on egg performance. Moreover, supplementation of xylanase and phytase, as well as inulin and chitosan, can positively affect the performance of layers given diets with a high concentration of DDGS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), the commonest childhood malignancy has seen remarkable progress since the 1960s with cure rates now approaching 85%. To achieve this patients undergo intensive treatment that usually takes 2.5-3.5 years involving on average 15 different chemotherapeutic drugs. In 1971, Donald Pinkel reported Total Therapy-Protocol V that used 5 drugs and cranial radiation therapy over a similar time period. Today, one half of these patients (Pinkel's children) remain alive and free of leukaemia. AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact post-induction minimal residual disease (MRD) levels had on survival and its relationship with the more established clinical and biological prognostic predictors of outcome in the hope of identifying a subgroup of patients that are at very low risk of failure. METHODS A retrospective review of 250 Irish children with ALL was carried out. MRD status after 28 days of induction chemotherapy and other known predictors of outcome were correlated with 5 year event-free survival (EFS). RESULTS MRD status was the strongest predictor of outcome with 5 year EFS rates greater that 90% seen in those patients with low-risk MRD and this was associated with TEL/AML1 rearrangement, high hyperdiploidy (HH) karyotype and female gender. CONCLUSION Both MRD and karyotype are powerful determinants of outcome in childhood ALL. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that the majority of children cured by Pinkel et al. in the late 1960s were most likely composed of low-risk MRD, TEL/AML1 and HH patients.

Abstract
Plastic PicoRad detectors with activated charcoal have been used for radon monitoring in local kindergartens and schools in two cities, Kalisz and Ostrów Wielkopolski, in the region of Greater Poland. Detectors were exposed for a standard time of 48 h during the autumn and winter of 2011 in 103 rooms (Kalisz) and 55 rooms (Ostrów Wlkp), respectively. The detectors were calibrated in the certified radon chamber of the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection in Warsaw, Poland. The arithmetic and geometric means of indoor radon concentrations in the examined rooms were 46.0 and 30.3 Bq/m3 for Kalisz and 48.9 and 29.8 Bq/m3 for Ostrów Wlkp, respectively. The measured levels of the indoor radon concentrations were relatively low, since the main source of indoor radon for these low storey (max. three storeys) buildings is radon escaping from the underlying soil with a low 226Ra concentration (~15 Bq/m3). Therefore, the calculated annual effective doses from that source for the children in Kalisz and Ostrów Wlkp were also low 0.35 mSv.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) constitute leading cause of morbidity, disability and premature mortality. Oxidative processes are involved in the pathogenesis of NCDs. OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship between lipid peroxidation (LPO), an index of oxidative damage to membrane lipids, or carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a tumor marker, and potential risk factors for NCDs in women at midlife and beyond. METHODS Data on lifestyle, such as dietary habits, smoking, physical activity, etc. and medical history, were assessed by a questionnaire in 323 female outpatients of the Regional Centre of Menopause and Osteoporosis - Outpatient Department of Endocrinology, Lodz (Poland), at midlife and beyond. Blood serum LPO and CEA levels, as well as anthropometric measurements were evaluated. RESULTS Positive correlations between LPO level and body mass or body mass index or hip circumference were found. LPO level was increased in women who did not declare regular menstrual cycles. CEA level was increased in women who smoked (and positively correlated with duration of smoking), who consumed pickled food every day and over-consumed animal fats, who had not breastfed in the past, as well as in women with malignancy in anamnesis. Logistic regression analysis has revealed that LPO constitutes the independent positive determinant, whereas CEA constitutes the independent negative determinant, of obesity. Moreover, CEA was independently associated with malignancy in anamnesis, cigarette smoking and animal fat over-consumption. CONCLUSION Both LPO and CEA are independently associated with certain modifiable risk factors for NCDs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Substrates of Fenton reaction (Fe(2+)+H(2)O(2)-->Fe(3+)+*OH+OH-) may be used to experimentally induce oxidative damage to macromolecules. The study aimed at evaluating effects of Fe(2+) and/or H(2)O(2) on lipid peroxidation in porcine ovary homogenates. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ovary homogenates were incubated in the presence of either H2O2 (100, 50, 25, 10, 5.0, 2.5, 1.0, 0.5, 0.25, 0.01, 0.001 mM) or FeSO(4) (Fe2+) (300, 150, 75, 30, 15, 7.5, 3.0, 1.5, 0.75 microM), or of those two factors used together: Fe(2+) (30 microM) plus H(2)O(2) (concentrations as above), or H(2)O(2) (0.5 mM) plus Fe(2+) (concentrations as above). The concentration of malondialdehyde+4-hydroxyalkenals constituted the lipid peroxidation index. RESULTS H(2)O(2) alone did not affect lipid peroxidation in porcine ovary homogenates at all, whereas Fe(2+) (300, 150, 75, 30, and 15 microM) alone increased lipid peroxidation in a concentration dependent manner. When Fe(2+) and H(2)O(2) were applied together, lipid peroxidation increased significantly without any concentration related effect of H(2)O(2), but with a clear concentration dependent effect of Fe(2+); the damaging effect of Fe(2+), used together with H(2)O(2), was the same as the one, obtained after Fe(2+) was applied alone. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, external H(2)O(2) is not indispensable for experimental induction of lipid peroxidation by Fenton reaction in porcine ovary homogenates.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The results of numerous studies have recently revealed that the motor activity are able to prolong the live of middle-aged and elderly human subjects preventing serious diseases and premature death. A regular physical activity decreases the number of fat cells and increases their vulnerability to insulin. Physical exercises regulate the metabolic disorders observed in obesity. The physical activity of persons with lipid disorders may induce some favorable changes and an increase the HDL of cholesterol fraction. The influence of physical activity on fat and carbohydrate changes was confirmed in some studies. The aim of the study was to evaluate the selected parameters of the fat and carbohydrate changes in subjects after 15 days health-related training performed on rehabilitation and reconditioning tables SLENDER-LIFE. MATERIAL AND METHODS A group of 50 patients during health-resort therapy were examined on the first and last day of training for biochemical blood parameters. RESULTS The examined biochemical parameters were reduced statistically significantly in all subjects, as follows: the total cholesterol concentration, the LDL value fraction of cholesterol, triglycerides, and the glucose concentration. CONCLUSIONS It has been documented that the level of the HDL fraction of cholesterol and the basic energy index were increased in the examined subjects. The training on the rehabilitation and reconditioning tables has been confirmed by the subjects as useful and efficient.

Abstract
UNLABELLED More and more people in the world contend with overweight or obesity, and this phenomenon at the moment is being recognized as one of the most important problems of modern civilization observed in many developed countries. Change of the lifestyle connected with turning from the active life to the more sedentary one and bad eating habits led to the development of overweight and obesity at an alarmingly fast rate with the parallel development of interests directed on conducting the research and looking for the effective methods of fighting against the overweight and obesity. The aim of the study was to evaluate some parameters of body weight among people being put on the healthy training on the rehabilitation and keep-fit tables Slender-Life. MATERIAL AND METHODS A group of 50 patients treated in sanatorium were included into the observation. Double measurement of body weight and thickness of the skin and fat were performed during the first and last days of the fifteen day training on the formerly mentioned tables. RESULTS The statistically important decrease of examined parameters including the real body weight, fat mass, the BMI indication and the thickness of the skin and fat folds was detected. CONCLUSIONS The healthy training on the rehabilitation and keep-fit tables Slender-Life causes the increase of the body fat-free weight. The positive acceptation of the rehabilitation on tables Slender-Life proves it should be applied.

Abstract
We investigate a two-dimensional problem of an isolated self-interacting end-grafted polymer, pulled by one end. In the thermodynamic limit, we find that the model has only two different phases, namely a collapsed phase and a stretched phase. We show that the phase diagram obtained by Kumar [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 128101 (2007)] for small systems, where differences between various statistical ensembles play an important role, differs from the phase diagram obtained here in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract
We present results for a lattice model of polymers where the type of beta sheet formation can be controlled by different types of hydrogen bonds depending on the relative orientation of close segments of the polymer. Tuning these different interaction strengths leads to low-temperature structures with different types of orientational order. We perform simulations of this model and so present the phase diagram, ascertaining the nature of the phases and the order of the transitions between these phases.

Abstract
We introduce a new class of models for polymer collapse, given by random walks on regular lattices which are weighted according to multiple site visits. A Boltzmann weight omegal is assigned to each (l+1)-fold visited lattice site, and self-avoidance is incorporated by restricting to a maximal number K of visits to any site via setting omegal=0 for l>or=K. In this Letter we study this model on the square and simple cubic lattices for the case K=3. Moreover, we consider a variant of this model, in which we forbid immediate self-reversal of the random walk. We perform simulations for random walks up to n=1024 steps using FlatPERM, a flat histogram stochastic growth algorithm. We find evidence that the existence of a collapse transition depends sensitively on the details of the model and has an unexpected dependence on dimension.
