Enhancement of Cr(VI) removal efficiency via adsorption/photocatalysis synergy using electrospun chitosan/g-C3N4/TiO2 nanofibers

Effective radioactive strontium removal using lithium titanate decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene/polyacrylonitrile beads

A lithium titanate-decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene (LTO-MX) composite was synthesized through etching and alkali processes, and subsequently immobilized using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer via a phase inversion method. In the batch study, the strontium adsorption behavior followed the Redlich-Peterson isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The maximum adsorption capacity for strontium reached 24.05 mg/g. Furthermore, a continuous fixed-bed column study was performed using the LTO-MX PAN beads to remove strontium from aqueous solutions. The dynamic behavior of column adsorption was examined under various operating parameters such as initial strontium concentration, flow rate, and bed height. Dynamic modeling was employed to describe adsorption breakthrough properties based on these experimental data. Both the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models accurately simulated the breakthrough curves. The proposed mechanisms for strontium adsorption included encapsulation, electrostatic attraction, cation exchange, and surface complexation. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of LTO-MX PAN beads as adsorbents for the continuous removal of strontium from radioactive wastewater.

Visible light photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride using chitosan-loaded Z-scheme heterostructured material BiOCOOH/O-gC3N4

In this work, a Z-scheme heterostructured BiOCOOH/O-gC3N4 material was synthesized and immobilized on chitosan (CTS) to obtain the BiOCOOH/O-gC3N4/CTS photocatalytic material for photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (CTC).Our findings indicate that the composite material BiOCOOH/O-gC3N4, as well as the BiOCOOH/O-gC3N4/CTS composite membrane, displayed a significantly higher efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of CTC compared to BiOCOOH alone, owing to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis. Following four cycles of use, the composite material retained around 96 % of its initial photocatalytic degradation activity. The addition of CTS in the photocatalytic material resolved issues such as aggregation and difficult recovery commonly encountered with powder materials, thereby facilitating effective collision between the photocatalytic active sites and CTC. Experimental and theoretical calculations provided confirmation that the combination of BiOCOOH and O-gC3N4 effectively enhanced the light absorption capacity and photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of environmental factors such as pH value and anions on the photocatalytic degradation experiment, which offers valuable insights for the application of composite catalysts in wastewater treatment.

Synthesis, application and molecular docking of modified cellulose with diaminoguanidine as complexing agent for selective separation of Cu (II), Cd (II) and Hg (II) ions from alum sample

A new modified cellulose with diaminoguanidine (Cel-Gua) synthesized for specific recovery of Cu (II), Cd (II), and Hg (II) from the alum sample. Cellulose was silanized by 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane and then was modified with diaminoguanidine to obtain N-donor chelating fibers. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta potential, electrons disperse X-ray analysis, elemental analyses (C, H and N), and thermogravimetric analysis were used for characterization. Factors influencing the adsorption were thoroughly examined. Under the optimal conditions, the Cel-Gua sorbent displayed maximum adsorption capacities of 94.33, 112.10 and 95.78 mg/g for Cu (II), Cd (II), and Hg (II), respectively. The sorption process of metal ions is equipped by kinetic model PSO and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The calculated thermodynamic variables confirmed that the adsorption of Cu (II), Cd (II) and Hg (II) by Cel-Gua sorbent is a spontaneous and exothermic process. In our study, we used the molecular operating environment software to conduct molecular docking simulations on the Cel-Gua compound. The results of the docking simulations showed that the Cel-Gua compound displayed greater potency and a stronger affinity for the Avr2 effector protein derived from Fusarium oxysporum, a fungal plant pathogen (code 5OD4). The adsorbent was stable for 7 cycles, thus allowing its safe reutilization.

Eco-Friendly g-C3N4/Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Alginate Composite Hydrogels for Simultaneous Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dye Pollutants

The presented study was focused on the simple, eco-friendly synthesis of composite hydrogels of crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/alginate (SA) with encapsulated g-C3N4 nanoparticles. The structural, textural, morphological, optical, and mechanical properties were determined using different methods. The encapsulation of g-C3N4 into CMC/SA copolymer resulted in the formation of composite hydrogels with a coherent structure, enhanced porosity, excellent photostability, and good adhesion. The ability of composite hydrogels to eliminate structurally different dyes with the same or opposite charge properties (cationic Methylene Blue and anionic Orange G and Remazol Brilliant Blue R) in both single- and binary-dye systems was examined through adsorption and photocatalytic reactions. The interactions between the dyes and g-C3N4 and the negatively charged CMC/SA copolymers had a notable influence on both the adsorption capacity and photodegradation efficiency of the prepared composites. Scavenger studies and leaching tests were conducted to gain insights into the primary reactive species and to assess the stability and long-term performance of the g-C3N4/CMC/SA beads. The commendable photocatalytic activity and excellent recyclability, coupled with the elimination of costly catalyst separation requirements, render the g-C3N4/CMC/SA composite hydrogels cost-effective and environmentally friendly materials, and strongly support their selection for tackling environmental pollution issues.

Sustainable chitosan-based materials as heterogeneous catalyst for application in wastewater treatment and water purification: An up-to-date review

Water pollution is one of serious environmental issues due to the rapid development of industrial and agricultural sectors, and clean water resources have been receiving increasing attention. Recently, more and more studies have witnessed significant development of catalysts (metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, zero-valent metal, etc.) for wastewater treatment and water purification. Sustainable and clean catalysts immobilized into chitosan-based materials (Cat@CSbMs) are considered one of the most appealing subclasses of functional materials due to their high catalytic activity, high adsorption capacities, non-toxicity and relative stability. This review provides a summary of various upgrading renewable Cat@CSbMs (such as cocatalyst, photocatalyst, and Fenton-like reagent, etc.). As for engineering applications, further researches of Cat@CSbMs should focus on treating complex wastewater containing both heavy metals and organic pollutants, as well as developing continuous flow treatment methods for industrial wastewater using Cat@CSbMs. In conclusion, this review abridges the gap between different approaches for upgrading renewable and clean Cat@CSbMs and their future applications. This will contribute to the development of cleaner and sustainable Cat@CSbMs for wastewater treatment and water purification.

Lignin-Derived Sustainable Nano-Platforms: A Multifunctional Solution for an Efficient Dye Removal

In contrast to conventional non-biobased adsorbents, lignin emerges as a cost-effective and environmentally benign alternative for water treatment. This study identifies unexpected and unpredicted multifunctional properties of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs). LNPs, which are prepared by simple physical processes, demonstrated for the first time to behave as multifunctional materials able to adsorb and photodegrade methylene blue (MB) in aqueous medium upon UV irradiation. Furthermore, the synthetic approach adopted to synthesize LNPs - and therefore their surface properties - strongly affects their performances. More specifically, LNPs obtained by solvent-antisolvent nanoprecipitation (SLNPs) show the highest MB adsorption properties (98 % removal), reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 43.0 mg g-1, and the fastest adsorption kinetics with respect to other lignin-based adsorbents. Conversely, hydrotropic LNPs (HLNPs) exhibit exceptional photocatalytic activity, resulting in 98 % MB degradation over 6 hours of UV irradiation, combined with the ability to be easily recycled and reused. The present effort paves the way for the use of LNPs as efficient multifunctional materials able to perform concurrently adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of dye pollutants, toward the creation of a sustainable biobased water treatment platform.

Recent advances in chitosan-based nanocomposites for adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions

Due to the high concentration of various toxic and dangerous pollutants, industrial effluents have imposed increasing threats. Among the various processes for wastewater treatment, adsorption is widely used due to its simplicity, good treatment efficiency, availability of a wide range of adsorbents, and cost-effectiveness. Chitosan (CS) has received great attention as a pollutant adsorbent due to its low cost and many -OH and -NH2 functional groups that can bind heavy metal ions. However, weaknesses such as sensitivity to pH, low thermal stability and low mechanical strength, limit the application of CS in wastewater treatment. The modification of these functional groups can improve its performance via cross-linking and grafting agents. The porosity and specific surface area of CS in powder form are not ideal, so physical modification of CS via integration with other materials (e.g., metal oxide, zeolite, clay, etc.) leads to the creation of composite materials with improved absorption performance. This review provides reports on the application of CS and its nanocomposites (NCs) for the removal of various heavy metal ions. Synthesis strategy, adsorption mechanism and influencing factors on sorbents for heavy metals are discussed in detail.

A review on chitin dissolution as preparation for electrospinning application

Electrospinning has been acknowledged as an efficient technique for the fabrication of continuous nanofibers from polymeric based materials such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), cellulose acetate (CA), chitin nanocrystals and others. These nanofibers exhibit chemical and mechanical stability, high porosity, functionality, high surface area and one-dimensional orientation which make it extremely beneficial in industrial application. In recent years, research on chitin - a biopolymer derived from crustacean and fungal cell wall - had gained interest due to its unique structural arrangement, excellent physical and chemical properties, in which make it biodegradable, non-toxic and biocompatible. Chitin has been widely utilized in various applications such as wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, membranes, food packaging and others. However, chitin is insoluble in most solvents due to its highly crystalline structure. An appropriate solvent system is required for dissolving chitin to maximize its application and produce a fine and smooth electrospun nanofiber. This review focuses on the preparation of chitin polymer solution through dissolution process using different types of solvent system for electrospinning process. The effect of processing parameters also discussed by highlighting some representative examples. Finally, the perspectives are presented regarding the current application of electrospun chitin nanofibers in selected fields.

A review on chitosan/metal oxide nanocomposites for applications in environmental remediation

A cleaner and safer environment is one of the most important requirements in the future. It has become increasingly urgent and important to fabricate novel environmentally-friendly materials to remove various hazardous pollutants. Compared with traditional materials, chitosan is a more environmentally friendly material due to its abundance, biocompatibility, biodegradability, film-forming ability and hydrophilicity. As an abundant of -NH2 and -OH groups on chitosan molecular chain could chelate with all kinds of metal ions efficiently, chitosan-based materials hold great potential as a versatile supporting matrix for metal oxide nanomaterials (MONMs) (TiO2, ZnO, SnO2, Fe3O4, etc.). Recently, many chitosan/metal oxide nanomaterials (CS/MONMs) have been reported as adsorbents, photocatalysts, heterogeneous Fenton-like agents, and sensors for potential and practical applications in environmental remediation and monitoring. This review analyzed and summarized the recent advances in CS/MONMs composites, which will provide plentiful and meaningful information on the preparation and application of CS/MONMs composites for wastewater treatment and help researchers to better understand the potential of CS/MONMs composites for environmental remediation and monitoring. In addition, the challenges of CS/MONM have been proposed.

Surfactant supported chitosan for efficient removal of Cr(VI) and anionic food stuff dyes from aquatic solutions

In order to develop a novel and cost-effective adsorbent with outstanding adsorption capacity and excellent recyclability for anionic pollutants, the chitosan-modified cetyltrimethylammonium bromide sorbent (CS@CTAB) was fabricated. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, elemental analysis, Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Scanning electron microscopy have been applied to evaluate both raw and surfactant modified chitosan (CS@CTAB). Azorubine, Sunset Yellow, and hexavalent chromium were used to study the adsorption behavior of CS@CTAB under various parameters such as adsorbent dose, initial dye and metal ion concentration, contact time, and temperature. Adsorption equilibrium, kinetics models and thermodynamic parameters were investigated. The adsorption isotherm fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 492.6 mg/g, 492.6 mg/g, and 490.196 mg/g for Azorubine, Sunset Yellow, and Hexavalent Chromium, respectively. The kinetic studies showed that the pseudo-second-order model provided a better correlation between experimental data. Furthermore, the calculated thermodynamic parameters confirmed that the adsorption of Cr(VI), E110, and E122 by CS@CTAB material is a spontaneous and exothermic process. The fabricated CS@CTAB adsorbent was employed for the efficient elimination of Azorubine, Sunset Yellow, and hexavalent chromium from real water samples, synthetic mixtures, and colored soft drinks, with a percentage of recovery of ~ 96%. The plausible adsorption mechanisms of Azorubine, Sunset Yellow, and hexavalent chromium on the surface of CS@CTAB are elucidated. The adsorption anticipated to be due to electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond formation for hexavalent chromium; while the adsorption of Azorubine and Sunset Yellow, was assumed to be due to electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and n-π interaction. Finally, the study demonstrates the efficiency of CS@CTAB for the removal of anionic species from several samples, including natural water and colored beverages.

Heterojunction material BiYO3/g-C3N4 modified with cellulose nanofibers for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with large specific surface area and superb adsorption capacity are excellent photocatalyst carriers. In this study, heterojunction powder material BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄ was successfully synthesized for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The photocatalytic material BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄/CNFs was obtained by loading BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄ on CNFs using electrostatic self-assembly method. BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄/CNFs exhibit a fluffy porous structure and large specific surface area, strong absorption in the visible light range, and the rapid transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Polymer-modified photocatalytic materials overcome the disadvantages of powder materials that are easy to reunite and difficult to recover. With synergistic effects of adsorption and photocatalysis, the catalyst demonstrated excellent TC removal efficiency, and the composite maintained nearly 90 % of its initial photocatalytic degradation activity after five cycles of use. The superior photocatalytic activity of the catalysts is also attributable to the formation of heterojunctions, and the heterojunction electron transfer pathway was confirmed by experimental studies and theoretical calculations. This work demonstrates that there is great research potential in using polymer modified photocatalysts to improve photocatalyst performance.

Fabrication of covalent organic frameworks modified nanofibrous membrane for efficiently enriching and detecting the trace polychlorinated biphenyls in water

Enriching and detecting the trace pollutants in actual matrices are critical to evaluating the water quality. Herein, a novel nanofibrous membrane, named PAN-SiO₂@TpPa, was prepared by in situ growing β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COF-TpPa) on the aminated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, and adopted for enriching the trace polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in various natural water body (river, lake and sea water) through the solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) process. The resulted nanofibrous membrane owned abundant functional groups (-NH-, -OH and aromatic groups), outstandingly thermal and chemical stability, and excellent ability in extracting PCBs congeners. Based on the SPME process, the PCBs congeners could be quantitatively analyzed by the traditional gas chromatography (GC) method, with the satisfactory linear relationship (R²>0.99), low detection limit (LODs, 0.1∼5 ng L^-1), high enrichment factors (EFs, 2714∼3949) and multiple recycling (>150 runs). Meanwhile, when PAN-SiO₂@TpPa was adopted in the real water samples, the low matrix effects on the enrichment of PCBs at both 5 and 50 ng L^-1 over PAN-SiO₂@TpPa membrane firmly revealed the feasibility of enriching the trace PCBs in real water. Besides, the related mechanism of extracting PCBs on PAN-SiO₂@TpPa mainly involved the synergistic effect of hydrophobic effect, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding.

Research on the performance of modified blue coke in adsorbing hexavalent chromium

To solve the issue of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contamination in water bodies, blue coke powder (LC) was chemically changed using potassium hydroxide to create the modified material (GLC), which was then used to treat a Cr(VI)-containing wastewater solution. The differences between the modified and unmodified blue coke's adsorption characteristics for Cr(VI) were studied, and the impact of pH, starting solution concentration, and adsorption period on the GLC's adsorption performance was investigated. The adsorption behavior of the GLC was analyzed using isothermal adsorption models, kinetic models, and adsorption thermodynamic analysis. The mechanism of Cr(VI) adsorption by the GLC was investigated using characterization techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). With the biggest difference in removal rate at pH = 2, which was 2.42 times that of LC, batch adsorption experiments revealed that, under the same adsorption conditions, the GLC always performed better than LC. With a specific surface area that was three times that of LC and an average pore diameter that was 0.67 times that of LC, GLC had a more porous structure than LC. The alteration significantly increased the number of hydroxyls on the surface of GLC by altering the structural makeup of LC. The ideal pH for removing Cr(VI) was 2, and the ideal GLC adsorbent dosage was 2.0 g/L. Pseudo-second-order kinetic (PSO) model and Redlich-Peterson (RP) model can effectively describe the adsorption behavior of GLC for Cr(VI). Physical and chemical adsorption work together to remove Cr(VI) by GLC in a spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-increasing process, with oxidation-reduction processes playing a key role. GLC is a potent adsorbent that can be used to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Insights into engineered graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots for hazardous contaminants degradation in wastewater

Increased environmental pollution is a critical issue that must be addressed. Photocatalytic, adsorption, and membrane filtration methods are suitable in environmental governance because of their high selectivity, low cost, environment-friendly nature, and excellent treatment efficiency. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) quantum dots (QDs) have been considered as photocatalysts, adsorbents, and membrane materials for wastewater treatments, owing to their stability, adsorption capacity, photochemical properties, and low toxicity and cost. This review summarizes g-C₃N₄ QD synthesis techniques, operating parameters affecting the removal performance in the treatment process, modification effects with other semiconductors, and benefits and drawbacks of g-C₃N₄ QD-based materials. Furthermore, this review discusses the practical applications of g-C₃N₄ QDs as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and membrane materials for organic and inorganic contaminant treatments and their value-added product formation potential. Modified g-C₃N₄ QD-based material adsorbents, photocatalysts, and membranes present potentially applicable effects, such as removal of most waterborne contaminants. Excellent results were obtained for the reduction of methyl orange, bisphenol A, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, phenol, rhodamine B, E. coli, and Hg. Overall, this paper provides comprehensive background on g-C₃N₄ QD-based materials and their diverse applications in wastewater treatment, and it presents a foundation for the enhancement of similar unique materials in the future.

Nanocellulose/carbon dots hydrogel as superior intensifier of ZnO/AgBr nanocomposite with adsorption and photocatalysis synergy for Cr(VI) removal

A novel nanocellulose/carbon dots hydrogel (NCH) was fabricated using cellulose nanofibrils (CN), carbon dots (CD) and zinc oxide (ZnO)/silver bromide (AgBr) nanocomposite, where CD enhanced amino group-induced adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and promoted the photocatalytic properties of ZnO/AgBr nanocomposite via the transfer of photogenerated electrons, resulting in enhanced efficiency in the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The structure, morphology, and physicochemical properties of the prepared NCH were characterized, with the results of adsorption and photocatalysis experiments showing the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of the NCH to be 315 mg/g, 219 times that of the ZnO/AgBr nanocomposite; the apparent removal rate constant of the NCH was 0.0319 min^-1, 11.7 times that of the ZnO/AgBr nanocomposite. Furthermore, the removal performance of NCH was attributed to CD-enhanced synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis effects, supported by characterization and experimental results. This work provides insight into the design and fabrication of a novel adsorptive photocatalyst with CD-enhanced synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis effects for removing Cr(VI) from aqueous solution.

Enhancement of AFB1 Removal Efficiency via Adsorption/Photocatalysis Synergy Using Surface-Modified Electrospun PCL-g-C3N4/CQDs Membranes

Aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) is a highly toxic mycotoxin produced by aspergillus species under specific conditions as secondary metabolites. In this study, types of PCL (Polycaprolactone) membranes anchored (or not) to g-C₃N₄/CQDs composites were prepared using electrospinning technology with (or without) the following surface modification treatment to remove AFB₁. These membranes and g-C₃N₄/CQDs composites were characterized by SEM, TEM, UV-vis, XRD, XPS and FTIR to analyze their physical and chemical properties. Among them, the modified PCL-g-C₃N₄/CQDs electrospun membranes exhibited an excellent ability to degrade AFB₁ via synergistic effects of adsorption and photocatalysis, and the degradation rate of 0.5 μg/mL AFB₁ solution was observed to be up to 96.88% in 30 min under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the modified PCL-g-C₃N₄/CQDs electrospun membranes could be removed directly after the reaction process without centrifugal or magnetic separation, and the regeneration was a green approach synchronized with the reaction under visible light avoiding physical or chemical treatment. The mechanism of adsorption by electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding interaction was revealed and the mechanism of photodegradation of AFB₁ was also proposed based on active species trapping experiments. This study illuminated the highly synergic adsorption and photocatalytic AFB₁ removal efficiency without side effects from the modified PCL-g-C₃N₄/CQDs electrospun membranes, thereby offering a continual and green solution to AFB₁ removal in practical application.

Adsorption and photodegradation of reactive red 120 with nickel-iron-layered double hydroxide/biochar composites

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials were widely applied for adsorption and photodegradation of pollutants for wastewater treatment. New efficient LDH materials with adsorption and photodegradation abilities will be promising candidates for pollutants removal. Hence, a series of NiFe-LDH/biochar (NiFe/BC) were fabricated by the coprecipitation method for synergistic adsorption and photodegradation anionic dyes of reactive red 120 (RR120). The removal experiment showed that the addition of an appropriate amount of biochar into NiFe-LDH enhanced the adsorption capacity and its photocatalytic ability. The optimized NiFe/BC2 composite can remove 88.5 % of RR120 under visible light by adsorption and photocatalysis, which was much better than NiFe-LDH (63.3 %) and biochar (2.6 %). The photodegradation kinetic constant of the NiFe/BC2 composite was 3.1 and 104.8 times that of NiFe-LDH and BC. In addition, active species capture experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests revealed the removal mechanisms of NiFe/BC composites for RR120 removal. This work affords a feasible strategy for preparing LDH-based photocatalyst with excellent adsorption and photocatalytic performance for wastewater treatment.

Facile synthesis of direct Z-scheme UiO-66-NH2/PhC2Cu heterojunction with ultrahigh redox potential for enhanced photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and NOR degradation

Z-scheme heterojunction-based photocatalysts typically have robust removal efficiencies for water contaminants. Herein, we employed p-type PhC₂Cu and n-type UiO-66-NH₂ to develop a direct Z-scheme UiO-66-NH₂/PhC₂Cu photocatalyst with an ultrahigh redox potential for Cr(VI) photoreduction and norfloxacin (NOR) photodegradation. Moreover, UV-vis diffuse reflectance, photoelectrochemical measurements, photoluminescence (PL) spectra and electron spin resonance (ESR) technique revealed that the UiO-66-NH₂/PhC₂Cu composite boosted light capturing capacities to promote photocatalytic efficiencies. Strikingly, the optimized UiO-66-NH₂/PhC₂Cu50 wt% rapidly reduced Cr(VI) (96.2%, 15 min) and degraded NOR (97.9%, 60 min) under low-power blue LED light. In addition, the UiO-66-NH₂/PhC₂Cu photocatalyst also exhibited favorable mineralization capacity (78.4%, 120 min). Benefitting from the enhanced interfacial electron transfer and ultrahigh redox potential of the Z-scheme heterojunction, the UiO-66-NH₂/PhC₂Cu photocatalyst greatly enhanced the separation efficacies of photogenerated carriers. This resulting abundance of active species (e.g., e^-, h⁺, O₂^•-, and •OH) were generated to photo-reduce Cr(VI) and photo-oxidize NOR. Base on the identified intermediates, four degradation pathways of NOR were proposed. Finally, the Z-scheme mechanism were systematically confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ESR, cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests, and photodeposition techniques.

Eco-friendly cubic-ZnS coupled Cu7S4 spines on chitosan matrix: Unravelling defect-engineered nanoplatform for the photodegradation of p-chlorophenol

Novel ZnS-Cu₇S₄ nanohybrid supported on chitosan matrix, as an ideal photocatalyst, was fabricated by the sonochemical method wherein high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the co-existence of both ZnS and Cu₇S₄; presence of vacancy sites in ZnS was verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and their introduction could promote two-photon excitation facilitated visible light response and charge transport/separation. The type II interface is formed in the ZnS-Cu₇S₄/Chitosan heterojunction owing to interstitial states that promote charge separation. The ZnS-Cu₇S₄/Chitosan was used for the photodegradation of a pharmaceutical pollutant, p-chlorophenol (PCP); over 98.8% of PCP photodegradation was achieved under visible-light irradiation where the ensued ·O₂^- and ·OH serve a key role in the photodegradation of PCP. In vitro cytotoxicity studies substantiated that the ZnS-Cu₇S₄/Chitosan is nontoxic to the ecosystem and human beings and endowed with promising photodegradation properties and accessibility via an environmentally friendly design, bodes well for its potential remediation applications.

High capacity and fast removal of Cr(vi) by alkali lignin-based poly(tetraethylene pentamine-pyrogallol) sorbent

In this work, a novel alkali lignin-based adsorption material, alkali lignin-based poly(tetraethylene pentamine-pyrogallol) (AL-PTAP), was prepared using a Mannich reaction and catechol-amine reaction for removal of Cr(vi). It was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of tetraethylene pentamine (TEPA) dosage, pyrogallol (PL) dosage, contact time, pH, temperature and other factors on the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent were systematically investigated. These experimental data show that the adsorption behavior conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity is 769.2 mg g^-1 at 303 K, which is much higher than that of alkali lignin (AL). AL-PTAP can achieve a removal rate of almost 100% for Cr(vi) solutions with a concentration of less than 90 mg L^-1 at 1 min. Furthermore, the toxic Cr(vi) is partly reduced to nontoxic Cr(iii) during the adsorption process. Therefore, AL-PTAP is a fast and efficient alkali lignin-based adsorbent, which is expected to improve the utilization value of alkali lignin in Cr(vi) wastewater treatment.

Efficient organic contaminant and Cr (VI) synchronous removing by one-step modified molybdenite cathode microbial fuel cells

As a novel technique with a wide range of applications, microbial fuel cell (MFC) could simultaneously remove organic contaminants and heavy metals in complex wastewater, despite striking differences in physicochemical properties of these contaminant. But its wastewater treatment efficiency is restricted by its lower generation performance. However, approaches for the modification of MFCs' cathode with appropriate catalyst could effectively overcome this limitation. Herein, a new-type efficient cathode catalyst was invented through modifying natural molybdenite via one-step oxidation method. In this case, molybdenite had many changes in morphology (wave-shaped bending, fragmentation and decrescent diameter) during oxidation modification process, and oxidation-modified molybdenite could provide much more active sites for the cathode. After applying this novel cathode catalyst, the electric generation capacity of MFC system increased by 5.08 times, and its simultaneous degradation efficiency of methyl blue (MB) and Cr (VI) increased by 3.35 times (compared with graphite cathode MFC). This study provides a novel low-carbon and environmentally friendly way to prepare high efficiency cathode catalyst materials and provides a new idea of simultaneous purification for organic and metallic pollutants from complex wastewater.

Adsorption coupling photocatalytic removal of gaseous n-hexane by phosphorus-doped g-C3N4/TiO2/Zn(OAc)2-ACF composites

VOCs emission reduction in the petroleum and petrochemical industry is a hot and difficult topic at present. The single method may not be able to meet the actual treatment status. Therefore, the adsorption coupled photocatalytic degradation technology was used to remove VOCs. Phosphorus-doped carbon nitride (PCN) and PCN/TiO₂ were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel method, and then PCN/TiO₂/Zn(OAc)₂-ACF composites were prepared by ultrasonic impregnation on zinc acetate modified activated carbon fibers (Zn(OAc)₂-ACF). The removal efficiency of n-hexane by composite materials was explored in a self-made reactor, and the factors affecting removal efficiency, removal mechanism, and possible ways of degradation were investigated. The results showed that under the optimum reaction conditions (initial concentration of n-hexane 200 mg/m³, space velocity 1000 h^-1, light intensity 24 W, mass fraction of doped PCN 6%, loading twice, calcination temperature 450 °C), PCN/TiO₂/Zn(OAc)₂-ACF composite has the highest removal efficiency of n-hexane (90.2%). The adsorption capacity of the composites after doping the P element was 215.3 mg/g, which did not enhance the adsorption performance compared with that before doping, but the removal rate of n-hexane was higher. This showed that doping P element was helpful to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the composites.

Synthesis of Chitosan-TiO2 Nanocomposite for Efficient Cr(VI) Removal from Contaminated Wastewater Sorption Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Mechanism

A photolysis method was used to prepare a nanocomposite adsorbent (Chitosan-TiO₂) and was tested for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The produce nanocomposite was investigated using, XRD, BET, FTIR, FESEM-EDX and TEM before and after Cr(VI) adsorption. The XRD results shows prepared anatase phase of TiO₂ with 12 nm. According to BET measurements, the surface area of the TiO₂/chitosan nanocomposite was lower and archived to 26 m²/g, while the TEM and FESEM images show a uniform distribution of TiO₂ throughout the chitosan matrix. Adsorption and kinetic experiments were run in batch system under different conditions of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature. Experimental Cr(VI) adsorption equilibrium and kinetics data fitted well to Langmuir model. The calculated Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) value of nanocomposite was 488 mg/g. Moreover, the highest quantity of Cr(VI) uptake was achieved of pH = 2 and 45℃ and TiO₂ and CS-TiO₂ had respective removal efficiencies of 94 and 87.5%. The thermodynamic parameters of Cr(VI) adsorption by nanocomposite affirm the spontaneous and endothermic nature of process. Chromium adsorption mechanism by CS-TiO₂ nanocomposite were proposed and discussed.

Promoting a well-dispersion of MoO3 nanoparticles on fibrous silica catalyst via one-pot synthesis for enhanced photoredox environmental pollutants efficiency

The coexistence of pharmaceutical compounds and heavy metals in the aquatic environment has resulted in complications in the treatment process and thus, causing uproar among the citizens. The radical-based photocatalysis technology has aroused as an excellent method to eliminate both heavy metal and pharmaceutical compounds in the water. Herein, reported the utilization of the microemulsion technique for the preparation of nanoporous fibrous silica-molybdenum oxide (FSMo) towards simultaneous photocatalytic abatement of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and tetracycline (TC). The FESEM analysis showed the spherical morphology of the FSMo catalyst with dendrimeric silica fiber. The synthesized FSMo catalyst exhibited narrowed bandgap, high crystallinity, and well Mo element dispersion for enhanced photo-redox of Cr(VI) and TC. Remarkably, simultaneous remediation of the Cr(VI) and TC over FSMo demonstrated superior photocatalytic efficiency, 69% and 75%, respectively, than in the individual system, possibly due to the effective separation of photoinduced charges. The introduction of the Mo element to the silica framework via microemulsion technique demonstrated better dispersion of Mo compared to the incipient wetness impregnation method and thus, yielded higher photocatalytic activity towards simultaneous removal of TC and Cr(VI). Besides, quenching experiments revealed the electrons and holes as the active species that play a dominant role in the simultaneous photo-redox of Cr(VI) and TC. Lastly, the FSMo catalyst demonstrated high stability after four continuous cycles of simultaneous photocatalysis reactions, implying its potential as a suitable material for practical wastewater treatments.

Electrospun Porous Nanofibers: Pore−Forming Mechanisms and Applications for Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants in Wastewater

Electrospun porous nanofibers have large specific surface areas and abundant active centers, which can effectively improve the properties of nanofibers. In the field of photocatalysis, electrospun porous nanofibers can increase the contact area of loaded photocatalytic particles with light, shorten the electron transfer path, and improve photocatalytic activity. In this paper, the main pore−forming mechanisms of electrospun porous nanofiber are summarized as breath figures, phase separation (vapor−induced phase separation, non−solvent−induced phase separation, and thermally induced phase separation) and post−processing (selective removal). Then, the application of electrospun porous nanofiber loading photocatalytic particles in the degradation of pollutants (such as organic, inorganic, and bacteria) in water is introduced, and its future development prospected. Although porous structures are beneficial in improving the photocatalytic performance of nanofibers, they reduce their mechanical properties. Therefore, strategies for improving the mechanical properties of electrospun porous nanofibers are also briefly discussed.

Synthesis of a new magnetic Sulfacetamide-Ethylacetoacetate hydrazone-chitosan Schiff-base for Cr(VI) removal

In this study, a novel magnetic organic-inorganic composite was fabricated. Where, Chitosan, sulfacetamide and ethylacetoacetae were used to prepare a new Sulfacetamide-Ethylacetoacetate hydrazone-chitosan Schiff-base (SEH-CSB) with a variety of active sites that capable of forming coordinate covalent bonds with Cr(VI). This was followed by modification of the formed SHE-CSB with NiFe₂O₄ to obtain the magnetic Chitosan-Schiff-base (NiFe₂O₄@SEH-CSB). NiFe₂O₄@SEH-CSB was characterized using FTIR, zeta potential, SEM, VSM and XPS. Results clarified that SHE played a crucial role in the removal of Cr(VI). The removal of Cr(VI) on NiFe₂O₄@SEH-CSB was found to be more fitted to pseudo-2nd order kinetics model and Freundlich isotherm. Besides, the maximum adsorption capacity of NiFe₂O₄@SEH-CSB for Cr(VI) was found to be 373.61 mg/g. The plausible mechanism for the removal of Cr(VI) on NiFe₂O₄@SEH-CSB composite suggested coulombic interaction, outer-sphere complexation, ion-exchange, surface complexation and coordinate-covalent bond pathways. The magnetic property enabled easy recycling of NiFe₂O₄@SEH-CSB composite.

One-Step Preparation of PVDF/GO Electrospun Nanofibrous Membrane for High-Efficient Adsorption of Cr(VI)

Mass loading of functional particles on the surface of nanofibers is the key to efficient heavy metal treatment. However, it is still difficult to prepare nanofibers with a large number of functional particle loads on the surface simply and efficiently, which hinders the further improvement of performance and increases the cost. Here, a new one-step strategy was developed to maximize the adhesion of graphene oxide (GO) particle to the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers, which was combined with coaxial surface modification technology and blended electrospinning. The oxygen content on the as-prepared fiber surface increased from 0.44% to 9.32%, showing the maximized GO load. The increased adsorption sites and improved hydrophilicity greatly promoted the adsorption effect of Cr(VI). The adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) was 271 mg/g, and 99% removal rate could be achieved within 2 h for 20 mL Cr(VI) (100 mg/L), which was highly efficient. After five adsorption-desorption tests, the adsorption removal efficiency of the Cr(VI) maintained more than 80%, exhibiting excellent recycling performance. This simple method achieved maximum loading of functional particles on the fiber surface, realizing the efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions, which may promote the development of heavy-metal-polluted water treatment.

Pt-Chitosan-TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution via Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer Mechanism under Visible Light

The Pt-chitosan-TiO2 charge transfer (CT) complex was synthesized via the sol-gel and impregnation method. The synthesized photocatalysts were thoroughly characterized, and their photocatalytic activity were evaluated toward H2 production through water reduction under visible-light irradiation. The effect of the preparation conditions of the photocatalysts (the degree of deacetylation of chitosan, addition amount of chitosan, and calcination temperature) on the photocatalytic activity was discussed. The optimal Pt-10%DD75-T200 showed a H2 generation rate of 280.4 μmol within 3 h. The remarkable visible-light photocatalytic activity of Pt-chitosan-TiO2 was due to the CT complex formation between chitosan and TiO2, which extended the visible-light absorption and induced the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). The photocatalytic mechanism of Pt-chitosan-TiO2 was also investigated. This paper outlines a new and facile pathway for designing novel visible-light-driven photocatalysts that are based on TiO2 modified by polysaccharide biomass wastes that are widely found in nature.

Efficient all-in-one removal of total chromium over nonconjugated polymer-inorganic ZnIn2S4 semiconductor hybrid

Chromium (Cr)-containing wastewater has caused a serious threat to the environment due to its high toxicity and mobility. The traditional Cr removal methods are generally based on an inconvenient two-step process with the first transformation of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and the consecutive removal of Cr(III) by precipitation. Herein, we demonstrate the efficient all-in-one removal of total Cr through the simultaneous photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and in-situ fixation of Cr(III) over the nonconjugated polymer engineered ZnIn₂S₄ (P-ZIS) photocatalyst. By in-situ polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) modification of ZIS during the preparation process, the resulted P-ZIS can completely reduce Cr(VI) within 60 min under visible light irradiation. The kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction over P-ZIS is 2.8 times as that of pure ZIS, which is proved to be benefited from the enhanced light absorption, uplifted conduction band for strengthening reducibility, and accelerated charge carrier transfer. Moreover, as compared to ZIS, P-ZIS also exhibits significantly improved in-situ adsorption ability for Cr(III), thus resulting in efficient all-in-one elimination of total Cr within a single system. We show that this polymer engineered strategy could be a facile and versatile protocol for modulating the electronic structure and surface chemistry of the semiconductor photocatalysts towards complete, safe, and cost-efficient removal of Cr.

Biowaste derived hydroxyapatite embedded on two-dimensional g-C3N4 nanosheets for degradation of hazardous dye and pharmacological drug via Z-scheme charge transfer

In recent years, there has been an increase in demand for inexpensive biowaste-derived photocatalysts for the degradation of hazardous dyes and pharmacological drugs. Here, we developed eggshell derived hydroxyapatite nanoparticles entrenched on two-dimensional g-C₃N₄ nanosheets. The structural, morphological and photophysical behavior of the materials is confirmed through various analytical techniques. The photocatalytic performance of the highly efficient HAp/gC₃N₄ photocatalyst is evaluated against methylene blue (MB) and doxycycline drug contaminates under UV–visible light exposure. The HAp/gC₃N₄ photocatalyst exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance for MB dye (93.69%) and doxycycline drug (83.08%) compared to bare HAp and g-C₃N₄ nanosheets. The ultimate point to note is that the HAp/gC₃N₄ photocatalyst was recycled in four consecutive cycles without any degradation performance. Superoxide radicals play an important role in degradation performance, which has been confirmed by scavenger experiments. Therefore, the biowaste-derived HAp combined with gC₃N₄ nanosheets is a promising photocatalyst for the degradation of hazardous dyes and pharmacological drug wastes.

Synthesis of novel CuNb2O6/g-C3N4 binary photocatalyst towards efficient visible light reduction of Cr (VI) and dyes degradation for environmental remediation

The further development of an efficient and sustainable water treatment requires the development of a very active and controllable photocatalyst. The heterojunction is a promising site where the activity of such a photocatalyst can be enhanced. Organic dyes have become a severe concern in recent years owing to their significant presence in wastewater. Hexavalent Chromium (Cr (VI)) is a potential carcinogen also exhibiting great persistence in wastewater. So, a low-waste, high-performance materials is required to eliminate organic dyes and Cr (VI) from wastewater. In this study, CNO/g-CN (CuNb₂O₆/g-C₃N₄) photocatalyst synthesized via co-precipitation, followed by calcination which were characterized using physiochemical and photo-electrochemical approaches to identify their structural, photochemical and optical traits. The uniqueness of the synthesized photocatalyst is due to both its efficient photo-reduction of Cr (VI) and photo-degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene Blue (MB) and Methyl Orange (MO) under visible light. The CNO/g-CN composite with 30% CNO heterojunctions exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity with Cr (VI) 92.80% photoreduction and efficiency degradation for RhB, MB, MO of 99.6%, 98.50%, 99.0%, respectively, with constant rate (k). This efficient photocatalytic activity is attributed to the lower recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. Free radical trapping experiments showed that ^•O₂^- and h⁺ play an important role in the photodegradation. The study, therefore, opens an alternative route in the synthesis of very efficient binary photocatalysts for application in environmental remediation.

Photocatalytic Efficiency of Titanium Dioxide for Dyes and Heavy Metals Removal from Wastewater

The hazardous toxicity of dye materials, even in low concentrations, harms ecological systems. It releases a large number of contaminants into the water, resulting as waste water. Dyes prevent the process of photosynthesis by obstructing light passage, lowers the oxygen levels dissolved in the water. Also, a good number of the dyes and heavy metals are carcinogenic and mutagenic to human beings. Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a promising technology for removing organic, inorganic, and microbial pollutants from water and wastewater. It is preferable to other conventional wastewater treatment approaches due to its benefit, such as low cost, environmental friendliness, ability to proceed at ambient temperature and pressure conditions, and to completely degrade pollutants into environmentally safe products with suitable measures. The titanium oxide (TiO2) is one of the most promising material that has gained enormous importance in the field of energy and environmental applications. The unique physicochemical properties of TiO2 make it one of the best candidates among existing photocatalysts. This review provides an overview of strategies employed to augment its catalytic performance as well as the impact of different operational parameters on the removal proficiency of various organic and inorganic pollutants in water and wastewater treatment. Removal of Cr(VI) by biochar derived via co-pyrolysis of oily sludge and corn stalks

The co-pyrolysis of oily sludge with biomass to prepare carbon materials is not only an effective way to mitigate oily sludge pollution, but it is also a method of obtaining carbon materials. In this study, a carbon material (OS-CS AC) was obtained by the direct co-pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) and corn stalks (CS) and then applied to Cr(VI) removal. According to the hydroxy and carboxy masking experiments and the characterization of OS-CS AC by FT-IR, SEM, XPS, XRD, and N₂ physical adsorption–desorption, Cr(VI) can be adsorbed efficiently through pore filling, the surface oxygen-containing functional groups can promote the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) through electron donors, and the greater the electrostatic attraction between the electron-donating functional groups of OS-CS AC and the Cr(VI) is, the stronger the ability to remove Cr(VI). In addition, the removal process was discussed, and the results indicated that the McKay kinetic model, Langmuir isotherm model and Van't Hoff thermodynamic model were the most suitable models for removal. The main factors affecting the removal of Cr(VI) were discussed, and the removal of Cr(VI) reached 99.14%, which gives a comprehensive utilization way of oily sludge and corn stalks.

Comprehensive review on advanced reusability of g-C3N4 based photocatalysts for the removal of organic pollutants

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has attained significant research attention in energy and environmental remediation due to its excellent electronic structure, greater physical and chemical properties, and abundance. However, graphitic carbon nitride faces severe problems because of its high recombination rate and higher mass loss of the catalyst during recovery operations. This review emphasizes the methods to overcome the difficulties associated with recovery and reusability of the g-C₃N₄ based photocatalyst towards the redemption of pollutants present in wastewater. Different strategies like magnetic g-C₃N₄ based photocatalysts, immobilized photocatalytic systems, and photocatalytic membranes and their usage in photocatalytic applications are well described. Different preparation strategies of the graphic carbon nitride-based composites are elucidated. The key challenges and future perspectives of adopting these methods for photocatalytic applications are also mentioned.

A high-performance microreactor integrated with chitosan/ Bi2WO6/CNT/TiO2 nanofibers for adsorptive/photocatalytic removal of cephalexin from aqueous solution

A Z-scheme Bi₂WO₆/CNT/TiO₂ photocatalyst was synthesized hydrothermally and loaded on chitosan nanofibers with different mass percentages using the electrospinning process. The batch adsorption experiments for chitosan nanofibrous samples containing Bi₂WO₆/CNT/TiO₂ revealed that the adsorption process and its kinetic followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. A planar microreactor with a reusable plate-type configuration was fabricated employing an inexpensive micromachining technique and integrated with chitosan/Bi₂WO₆/CNT/TiO₂ nanofibers. The synergistic effect of the adsorption and photocatalysis was assessed for removing cephalexin under simulated sunlight irradiation in a continuous flow microreactor. The nanofibers containing 15 wt% of Bi₂WO₆/CNT/TiO₂ exhibited the most removal efficiency. The effects of operational variables were investigated in the microreactor and optimized using response surface methodology as light intensity = 17.45 W/m², retention time = 256 s, pH = 4.8, and initial cephalexin concentration = 29 mg/L. At this condition, cephalexin and TOC removal efficiencies reached 99.2% and 92.4%, respectively. The kinetic of disappearance of cephalexin under optimal conditions followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. The adsorption equilibrium constant deduced from this model was similar to that one calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model. At the optimum condition, cephalexin removal efficiency reduced to 80% after 1500 min of microreactor operation and the nanofibers revealed appropriate stability and reusability.

Facile Synthesis of Fe(0)@Activated Carbon Material as an Active Adsorbent towards the Removal of Cr (VI) from Aqueous Media

A novel adsorbent substrate based on zero-valent iron in activated carbon (Fe(0)@AC) was introduced in this work, and was evaluated as a cheap adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The as-prepared Fe(0)@AC material was chemically prepared via NaBH4 reduction in the presence of ferric chloride as an iron source, followed by the addition of powdered activated carbon. The different physicochemical tools confirm the successful preparation of Fe(0) composite with activated carbon as a heterogeneous composite with heterogeneous morphology of the rock-shape structure, which could play a role in the metal adsorption application. Interestingly, the removal efficiency (RE) of Cr(VI) was increased from 52% to 84% due to the Fe(0)@AC adsorbent being changed from 0.2 to 0.4 g/100 mL. Following this, the increase rate was stabilized, and the RE reached 95% in the case of 0.8 g/100 mL from Fe(0)@AC adsorbent. This result could be due to the increase in the sorbent active sites with more contents from Fe(0)@AC. The adsorption model based on the Langmuir approach could successfully describe the experimental outcomes for Cr(VI) removal by Fe(0)@AC with the correlation coefficient of 0.977. To conclude, Fe(0)@AC heterogeneous material is an active adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions.

Broad Spectral Response Z-Scheme Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous Carbon Quantum Dots/TiO2/g-C3N4 Composite for Boosting Photocatalysis

Photocatalytic degradation technology is one of the effective protocols to solve environmental problems. TiO₂ has always been favored for its photostability and low cost. However, the insufficient photocatalytic activity of TiO₂ limits its application due to the severe recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes and a narrow light response range. Therefore, 3DTCN, a TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ composite with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure was prepared by a colloidal crystal template technique to form a heterojunction for inhibiting the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. On 3DTCN, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were loaded by impregnation to obtain x % CQDs/3DTCN with a broad spectral response to light. The physical and chemical properties of samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution-TEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated via degrading the rhodamine B (RhB) dye, and the degradation efficiency of 1% CQDs/3DTCN (98%) was found to be much higher than that of 3DTCN (42%) in 80 min under simulated sunlight irradiation. Furthermore, it also possessed excellent durability. Meanwhile, the sample also showed an outstanding photoelectric property. Finally, the proposed mechanism of the composites had been mainly analyzed by density functional theory calculations. This work thus provides an idea to form a 3D structure heterojunction and further improve the photocatalytic activity.

Review of the Recent Advances in Electrospun Nanofibers Applications in Water Purification

Recently, nanofibers have come to be considered one of the sustainable routes with enormous applicability in different fields, such as wastewater treatment. Electrospun nanofibers can be fabricated from various materials, such as synthetic and natural polymers, and contribute to the synthesis of novel nanomaterials and nanocomposites. Therefore, they have promising properties, such as an interconnected porous structure, light weight, high porosity, and large surface area, and are easily modified with other polymeric materials or nanomaterials to enhance their suitability for specific applications. As such, this review surveys recent progress made in the use of electrospun nanofibers to purify polluted water, wherein the distinctive characteristics of this type of nanofiber are essential when using them to remove organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater, as well as for oil/water (O/W) separation.

Diverse biotechnological applications of multifunctional titanium dioxide nanoparticles: An up-to-date review

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the topmost widely used metallic oxide nanoparticles. Whether present in naked form or doped with metals or polymers, TiO₂ NPs perform immensely important functions. However, the alteration in size and shape by doping results in improving the physical, chemical, and biological behaviour of TiO₂ NPs. Hence, the differential effects of various TiO₂ nanostructures including nanoflakes, nanoflowers, and nanotubes in various domains of biotechnology have been elucidated by researchers. Recently, the exponential growth of research activities regarding TiO₂ NPs has been observed owing to their chemical stability, low toxicity, and multifaceted properties. Because of their enormous abundance, plants, humans, and environment are inevitably exposed to TiO₂ NPs. These NPs play a significant role in improving agricultural attributes, removing environmental pollution, and upgrading the domain of nanomedicine. Therefore, the currently ongoing studies about the employment of TiO₂ NPs in enhancement of different aspects of agriculture, environment, and medicine have been extensively discussed in this review.
