Sorption of toxic metal ions by solid sorbents: A predictive speciation approach based on complex formation constants in aqueous solution

Chelating Agents in Soil Remediation: A New Method for a Pragmatic Choice of the Right Chelator

Soil pollution by metal ions constitutes one of the most significant environmental problems in the world, being the ecosystems of extended areas wholly compromised. The remediation of soils is an impelling necessity, and different methodologies are used and studied for reaching this goal. Among them, the application of chelating agents is one of the most promising since it could allow the removal of metal ions while preserving the most meaningful properties of the original soils. The research in this field requires the joined contribute of different expertise spanning from biology to chemistry. In this work, we propose a parsimonious and pragmatic approach for screening among a range of potential chelating agents. This methodology, the Nurchi's method, is based on an extension of the Reilley procedure for EDTA titrations. This allows forecasting the binding ability of chelating agents toward the target polluting metal ions and those typically found in soils, based on the knowledge of the related protonation and complex formation constants. The method is thoroughly developed, and then tested by application to some representative cases. Its use and relevance in biomedical and industrial applications is also discussed.

Safranin O-functionalized cuboid mesoporous silica material for fluorescent sensing and adsorption of permanganate

A new safranin O-based chelating fluorophore coupled, dual-functionalized organic–inorganic hybrid material has been prepared for simultaneous MnO₄⁻ detection and adsorption in aqueous media and living organisms such as limnodrilus claparedianus and zebrafish.

κ-Carrageenan/Sodium alginate double-network hydrogel with enhanced mechanical properties, anti-swelling, and adsorption capacity

The abuse of antibiotics is becoming increasingly serious, particularly in offshore aquaculture areas. Double-network polymer gel has good prospects for environmental application for the removal of antibiotics. In this work, κ-Carrageenan/Sodium Alginate (κ-car/SA) double-network hydrogels were designed and synthesized with enhanced mechanical properties, anti-swelling, and adsorption capacity. It was found that the intermolecular interaction and viscosity tend to increase with the increasing concentration of κ-carrageenan. The swelling degree of the composite hydrogel in NaCl solution presented a decreasing trend with the increase of carrageenan. SA can effectively improve the mechanical properties of κ-carrageenan composite gel and enhance its compressive resistance and elasticity. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) was used as the model pollutant for testing the adsorption performance. The results show that the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model is more suitable for fitting the adsorption isotherm data of CIP on gel beads, which indicates that κ-car/SA hydrogels have heterogeneous surface and different binding sites. κ-car/SA composite double-network hydrogels exhibit excellent adsorption properties for CIP (229 mg/g). The optimal adsorption capacity of κ-car/SA composite hydrogels was obtained at pH 4, and the adsorption capacity of the hydrogels increased with increasing ion concentration. FTIR spectroscopy and the Zeta potential test analyses showed that the adsorption mechanism may be explained by hydrogen bonding and the electrostatic interactions between κ-car/SA composite hydrogels and CIP. The formation of the new double-network hydrogel provided good properties and development potential for the adsorption of antibiotic in water.

An Anthracene Excimer Fluorescence Probe on Mesoporous Silica for Dual Functions of Detection and Adsorption of Mercury (II) and Copper (II) with Biological In Vivo Applications

Dual functional activity by the same organic-inorganic hybrid material toward selective metal ion detection and its adsorption has drawn more attraction in the field of sensing. However, most of the hybrid materials in the literature are either for sensing studies or adsorption studies. In this manuscript, a fluorescent active hybrid material SiO₂ @PBATPA is synthesized by covalent coupling of anthracene-based chelating ligand N,N'-(propane-1,3-diyl) bis(N-(anthracen-9-ylmethyl)-2-((3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl) amino) acetamide) (PBATPA) within the mesopores of newly synthesized cubic mesoporous silica. The synthetic strategy is designed to form an exclusively intramolecular excimer on a solid surface, which is then used as a sensory tool for selective detection of metal ions through fluorescence quenching by the destruction of excimer upon metal ion binding. The dual functions of sensing and adsorption studies show selectivity toward Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ among various metal ions with detection limits of 37 and 6 ppb, respectively, and adsorption capacities of 482 and 246 mg g^-1 , respectively. This material can be used as a sensory cum adsorbent material in real food samples and living organisms such as the brine shrimp Artemia salina without any toxic effects from the material.

Removal of Mn (II) by Sodium Alginate/Graphene Oxide Composite Double-Network Hydrogel Beads from Aqueous Solutions

After the successful preparation of empirical double network hydrogel beads from graphene oxide/sodium alginate(GO/SA), its cationic metal adsorption performance in aqueous solutions were investigated. Taking Mn(II) as an example, the contribution of several factors including pH, bead dosage, temperature, contact time and initial concentration ions to adsorption efficiency were examined. The Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) results indicate that the GO/SA double (GAD) network hydrogel bead strongly interpenetrate and the adsorption of Mn(II) is mainly influenced by solution pH, bead dose and temperature. The GAD beads exhibit an excellent adsorption capacity of 56.49 mg g⁻¹. The adsorption process fit both Pseudo-second order kinetic model (R² > 0.97) and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm (R² > 0.99) and is spontaneous. After seven rounds of adsorption-desorption cycle, the adsorption capacity of GAD hydrogel remained unchanged at 18.11 mg/g.

Removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions using waste textiles/poly(acrylic acid) composite synthesized by radical polymerization technique

Waste textiles (WTs) are the inevitable outcome of human activity and should be separated and recycled in view of sustainable development. In this work, WT was modified through grafting with acrylic acid (AA) via radical polymerization process using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator and microwave and/or UV irradiation as energy supply. The acrylic acid-grafted waste textiles (WT-g-AA) thus obtained was then used as an adsorbent to remove Pb(II) from Pb(II)-containing wastewater. The effects of pH, initial concentrations of Pb(II) and adsorbent dose were investigated, and around 95% Pb(II) can be removed from the aqueous solution containing 10mg/L at pH6.0-8.0. The experimental adsorption isotherm data was fitted to the Langmuir model with maximum adsorption capacity of 35.7mg Pb/g WT-g-AA. The Pb-absorbed WT-g-AA was stripped using dilute nitric acid solution and the adsorption capacity of Pb-free material decreased from 95.4% (cycle 1) to 91.1% (cycle 3). It was considered that the WT-g-AA adsorption for Pb(II) may be realized through the ion-exchange mechanism between COOH and Pb(II). The promising results manifested that WT-g-AA powder was an efficient, eco-friendly and reusable adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) from wastewater.

Characterization of Pb2+ biosorption by psychrotrophic strain Pseudomonas sp. I3 isolated from permafrost soil of Mohe wetland in Northeast China

Due to the long and severe winter in Northeast China, wastewater containing lead (Pb) is treated inefficiently, resulting in irregular disposal. In order to solve this problem, a Pb-resistant psychrotrophic bacterium, Pseudomonas sp. I3, was isolated from permafrost soil of Mohe wetland and served as biosorbent for Pb²⁺ removal under 15 °C. The minimum inhibitory concentration of strain I3 for Pb²⁺ was 7.5 mM, which was higher than that of Escherichia coli DH5α (1.5 mM). However, acid digestion results showed that these two bacteria had a comparable biosorption capacity for Pb²⁺, suggesting no direct relationship between biosorption ability of bacteria and their metal-resistance. Acid digestion results also proved that intracellular Pb accumulation was mainly contributed to the distinct performance between living and non-living biosorbents, which was further confirmed by the analyses of TEM-EDS. Results of FTIR revealed that functional groups including CH₂, CO, CN, NH, COO and SO₃ were participated in the biosorption process of the tested biosorbents no matter bacteria were living or not. The effects of environmental factors including pH, temperature, biomass dose, operation time and initial Pb²⁺ concentration were investigated through a batch of biosorption experiments. The equilibrium data for living and non-living biosorbent were well fitted to Langmuir model with their maximum Pb²⁺ biosorption capacities of 49.48 and 42.37 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data for each biosorbent were well described by pseudo-second order kinetic model. Overall, Pseudomonas sp. I3 seemed to be an effective biosorbent for cleansing Pb²⁺ from contaminated wastewater at low temperature.

Recovery of valuable metals from electronic scraps by clays and organo-clays: Study on bi-ionic model solutions

The demand of valuable metals, as precious metals and rare earths, is constantly increasing in the global market, as many and different technological applications exploit these materials because of their unique properties. Since natural resources are located just in focused areas, an interesting possibility could be the recovery of metals from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). The aim of this work is to evaluate the recovery potentialities of clays and organo-clay based systems towards the metals contained in the solutions of electronic scraps dissolved in strong acid, by preliminary tests on bi-ionic model solutions. Lanthanum has been chosen as representative of the rare earths while copper has been considered since it is by far the most used metal in electric and electronic equipment. The considered sorbents are a montmorillonitic clay and two polyamine based organo-clays. Uptake and release processes have been carried out in order to assess the performances of these solids and to evaluate the uptake and release mechanisms. The results showed that the cationic exchange is the prevailing mechanism in the case of pristine clay, while both coordinating effect due to amino groups and cationic exchange occur in the case of modified clays, respectively accounting for copper and lanthanum uptake. Furthermore the pH was found having a great influence in both the adsorption and desorption phenomena.

Simultaneously detection of calcium and magnesium in various samples by calmagite and chemometrics data processing

The current study describes results of the application of radial basis function-partial least squares (RBF-PLS), partial robust M-regression (PRM), singular value decomposition (SVD), evolving factor analysis (EFA), multivariate curve resolution with alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) and rank annihilation factor analysis (RAFA) methods for the purposes of simultaneous determination of trace amounts calcium (Ca(2+)) and magnesium (Mg(2+)) and exploratory analysis based on their colored complexes formation with 1-(1-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-phenylazo)-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (calmagite) as chromomeric reagent. The complex formation Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) with calmagite was investigated under pH10.20. The performance of RBF-PLS model in detection of minerals was compared with PRM as a linear model. The pure concentration and spectral profiles were obtained using MCR-ALS. EFA and SVD were used to distinguish the number species. The stability constants of the complexes were derived using RAFA. Finally, RBF-PLS was utilized for simultaneous determination of minerals in pharmaceutical formulation and various vegetable samples.

Application of a new version of GA-RBF neural network for simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of Zn(II), Fe(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) in real samples: An exploratory study of their complexation abilities toward MTB

The current study for the first time is devoted to the application of whole space genetic algorithm-radial basis function network (wsGA-RBFN) method to determine the content micro minerals of Zn(2+), Fe(2+), Co(2+) and Cu(2+) based on their complexes formation with methylthymol blue (MTB) spectrophotometrically in various pharmaceutical products and vegetable samples. Advantage of wsGA-RBFN compared to GA-RBFN is that centers can be located in any point of the samples spaces. Initially, the parameters controlling behavior of the system were investigated and optimum conditions were selected. Then, an exploratory analysis of complex systems was carried out by chemometrics approaches such as SVD, EFA, MCR-ALS and RAFA. The optimal parameters and conditions for constructing the proposed model of wsGA-RBFN were obtained from processing the data set of synthetic samples. Finally, wsGA-RBFN was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of Zn(2+), Fe(2+), Co(2+) and Cu(2+) in tomato, white cabbage, red cabbage and lettuce and pharmaceutical products included iron, zinc, multi complete and B12 ampoule.

A double network gel as low cost and easy recycle adsorbent: Highly efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) pollutants from wastewater

A high strength of polyving alcohol/polyacrylic acid double network gel (PVA/PAA gel) adsorbent was successfully prepared by a simple two-step method in this study. The gel adsorbent possessed the advantages of low cost and high adsorptivity for heavy metals in solution. The maximum uptake capacities of PVA/PAA gel were 194.99 mg/g for Pb(II) and 115.88 mg/g for Cd(II) inferred from the Langmuir model at 303 K. At the concentration levels of Pb(II)<150 mg/L and Cd(II)<100mg/L, the Pb(II) and Cd(II) could be completely adsorbed, showing a great potential of removing heavy metals from wastewater. Simultaneously, the PVA/PAA gel adsorbent exhibited an excellent reusability. Even in the fifth cycle, the removal efficiencies of both Pb(II) and Cd(II) remained nearly 100%. Significantly, the gel adsorbent displayed a satisfactory performance of removing heavy metals in actual industrial effluent. The results reveal that the double network gel can be considered as a potential candidate for practical application.

Use of natural clays as sorbent materials for rare earth ions: Materials characterization and set up of the operative parameters

Two mineral clays of the montmorillonite group were tested as sorbents for the removal of Rare Earths (REs) from liquid solutions. Lanthanum and neodymium model solutions were used to perform uptake tests in order to: (a) verify the clays sorption capability, (b) investigate the sorption mechanisms and (c) optimize the experimental parameters, such as contact time and pH. The desorption was also studied, in order to evaluate the feasibility of REs recovery from waters. The adsorption-desorption procedure with the optimized parameters was also tested on a leaching solution obtained by dissolution of a dismantled NdFeB magnet of a hard-disk. The clays were fully characterized after REs adsorption and desorption by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); the liquid phase was characterized via Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) analyses. The experimental results show that both clays are able to capture and release La and Nd ions, with an ion exchange mechanism. The best total efficiency (capture ≈ 50%, release ≈ 70%) is obtained when the uptake and release processes are performed at pH=5 and pH=1 respectively; in real leached scrap solutions, the uptake is around 40% but release efficiency is strongly decreased passing from a mono-ion system to a real system (from 80% to 5%). Furthermore, a strong matrix effect is found, with the matrix largely affecting both the uptake and the release of neodymium.

Epoxy resin modified with amine as an effective complexing agent of metal cations

A simple synthesis of a material capable of metal cation removal is proposed. The material was a derivative of epoxy resin containing amine groups. It is insoluble in water and in this study it was characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The sorbent obtained was tested for its ability to remove coper(II), cadmium(II) and lead(II) from water solutions. The tests were performed for different concentrations of metal ions (10–200 mg L−1) and at different pH (2.0–9.0). The effects of temperature and stirring time, as well as reusability of the sorbent were also studied in batch experiments. In the optimum conditions, the decrease in the cation concentration in aqueous solutions was observed in the order Cu&gt;Pb&gt;Cd but for each ion the decrease was at least 50% of the initial concentration. The sorbent has demonstrated high effectiveness in cation sorption and after regeneration it can be applied repeatedly in the process described.
