Antibiotics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in marine food webs of the Yellow River Estuary: Occurrence, trophic transfer, and human health risks

Antibiotics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common environmental contaminants in the aquatic region encompassing the estuary of the Yellow River and Laizhou Bay. But little information is available about the trophic transfer of antibiotics and PAHs in the marine food web of this area. This study investigated the occurrence and trophic transfer of 19 antibiotics and 16 PAHs in marine organisms from a food web of Laizhou Bay of the Yellow River estuary. Sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, and 2 to 4-ring PAHs were the dominant contaminants in organisms. There was a significant positive correlation between the log total concentration of sulfonamides and trophic level (TL). Sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, and erythromycin had biomagnification effects, while ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin had biological dilution effects. The log total concentration of PAHs had a significant negative correlation with TL. Naphthalene, fluorene, anthracene, pyrene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene had biological dilution effects. The distinct correlations of trophic magnification factors Dow of antibiotics and Kow of 2 to 5-ring PAHs, indicating that the potential of these two coefficients for predicting their transfer. Risk assessment indicated that the consumption of seafood containing antibiotics and PAHs in Laizhou Bay of the Yellow River estuary posed health and carcinogenic risks to human, respectively.

Occurrence and seasonal variations of antibiotic micro-pollutants in the Wei River, China

In this study, a systematic monitoring campaign of 30 antibiotics belonging to tetracyclines (TCs), macrolides (MLs), fluoroquinolones (FQs) and sulfonamides (SAs) was performed in the Xi'an section of the Wei River during three sampling events (December 2021, June 2022, and September 2022). The total concentrations of antibiotics in water ranged from 297 to 461 ng/L with high detection frequencies ranging from 45% to 100% for the various antibiotics. A marked seasonal variation in concentrations was found with total antibiotic concentrations in winter being 1.5 and 2 times higher than those in the summer and autumn seasons, respectively. The main contaminants in both winter and summer seasons were FQs, but in the autumn SAs were more abundant, suggesting different seasonal sources or more effective runoff for certain antibiotics during periods of rainfall. Combined analysis using redundancy and clustering analysis indicated that the distribution of antibiotics in the Wei River was affected by the confluence with dilution of tributaries and outlet of domestic sewage. Ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient (RQ) showed that most antibiotics in water samples posed insignificant risk to fish and green algae, as well as insignificant to low risk to Daphnia. The water-sediment distribution coefficients of SAs were higher than those of other antibiotics, indicating that particle-bound runoff could be a significant source for this class of antibiotics.

Impact of cadmium and diclofenac exposure on biochemical responses, transcriptome, gut microflora, and growth performance in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodonidella)

In recent years, the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and diclofenac (DCF) in water have frequently exceeded the standard; however, the toxic effects of these two pollutants on grass carp under single and combined exposure are unknown. In this study, the concentrations of pollutants in different tissues were detected, and the toxicities of the two pollutants to grass carp under different exposure conditions were compared based on growth traits, biochemical responses, gut microbiome, and transcriptomes. Based on these findings, the brain showed the lowest levels of Cd and DCF accumulation. Oxidative stress and pathological damage were observed in the brain and intestines. Changes in the structure and abundance of the gut microflora affect the synthesis of neurotransmitters, such as GABA and steroids. Differentially expressed genes in the brain were enriched in circadian rhythm functions. The expression of PER, CLOCK,1L-1β, 1L-17, and other genes are related to the abundance of Akkermansia, which indicates that the disorder of gut microflora will affect the normal circadian rhythm of the brain. All indices in the recovery group showed an increasing trend. Overall, the toxicity of Cd and DCF showed antagonism, and a single exposure had a stronger effect on gut microorganisms and circadian rhythm, which provided a scientific basis for exploring the comprehensive effects of different pollutants.

Toxic effects of combined exposure to cadmium and diclofenac on freshwater crayfish (Procambarus clarkii): Insights from antioxidant enzyme activity, histopathology, and gut microbiome

In recent years, excessive discharge of pollutants has led to increasing concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and diclofenac (DCF) in water; however, the toxicity mechanism of combined exposure of the two pollutants to aquatic animals has not been fully studied. Procambarus clarkii is an economically important aquatic species that is easily affected by Cd and DCF. This study examined the effects of combined exposure to Cd and DCF on the tissue accumulation, physiology, biochemistry, and gut microflora of P. clarkii. The results showed that Cd and DCF accumulated in tissues in the order of hepatopancreas > gill > intestine > muscle. The hepatopancreas and intestines were subjected to severe oxidative stress, with significantly increased antioxidant enzyme activity. Pathological examination revealed lumen expansion and epithelial vacuolisation in the hepatopancreas and damage to the villous capillaries and wall in the intestine. The co-exposure to Cadmium (Cd) and Diclofenac (DCF) disrupts the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio, impairing the regular functioning of intestinal microbiota in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. This disturbance consequently hinders the absorption and utilization of energy and nutrients in Procambarus clarkii. This study offers critical insights into the toxicological mechanisms underlying the combined effects of Cd and DCF, and suggests potential approaches to alleviate their adverse impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

Environmental pitfalls and associated human health risks and ecological impacts from landfill leachate contaminants: Current evidence, recommended interventions and future directions

The improper management of solid waste, particularly the dumping of untreated municipal solid waste, poses a growing global challenge in both developed and developing nations. The generation of leachate is one of the significant issues that arise from this practice, and it can have harmful impacts on both the environment and public health. This paper presents an overview of the primary waste types that generate landfill leachate and their characteristics. This includes examining the distribution of waste types in landfills globally and how they have changed over time, which can provide valuable insights into potential pollutants in a given area and their trends. With a lack of specific regulations and growing concerns regarding environmental and health impacts, the paper also focuses on emerging contaminants. Furthermore, the environmental and ecological impacts of leachate, along with associated health risks, are analyzed. The potential applications of landfill leachate, suggested interventions and future directions are also discussed in the manuscript. Finally, this work addresses future research directions in landfill leachate studies, with attention, for the first time to the potentialities that artificial intelligence can offer for landfill leachate management, studies, and applications.

Nano-clay montmorillonite removes tetracycline in water: Factors and adsorption mechanism in aquatic environments

In response to escalating environmental concerns surrounding antibiotic pollution, the utilization of calcium-montmorillonite minerals for tetracycline wastewater treatment is gaining prominence. This study systematically analyzed the physicochemical properties of calcium-montmorillonite through scanning electron microscope, contact angle analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It explored the adsorption efficacy and mechanisms for tetracycline removal, considering factors like initial pH, adsorption duration, concentration, and co-cations (Na+ and Ca2+). Under optimized conditions, achieving over 90% tetracycline removal with a maximum adsorption capacity of 526 mg/g, the study revealed competitive adsorption sites for coexisting cations. The Langmuir model best described the monolayer adsorption process, while kinetic studies favored the pseudo-first-order model. This research offers comprehensive insights into tetracycline adsorption on calcium-montmorillonite, emphasizing its potential as an efficient, cost-effective adsorbent for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Dissipation of twelve organic micropollutants in three different soils: Effect of soil characteristics and microbial composition

The dissipation kinetics and half-lives of selected organic micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and others, were systematically investigated and compared among different soil types. While some pollutants (e.g., atorvastatin, valsartan, and bisphenol S) disappeared rapidly in all the tested soils, many of them (e.g., telmisartan, memantine, venlafaxine, and azithromycin) remained persistent. Irrespective of the soil characteristics, venlafaxine showed the lowest dissipation kinetics and the longest half-lives (250 to approximately 500 days) among the stable compounds. The highest first and second-order kinetics were, however, recorded for valsartan (k1; 0.262 day-1) and atorvastatin (k2; 33.8 g μg-1 day-1) respectively. Nevertheless, more than 90% (i.e., DT90) of all the rapidly dissipated compounds (i.e., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) disappeared from the tested soils within a short timescale (i.e., 5-36 days). Dissipation of pollutants that are more susceptible to microbial degradation (e.g., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) seems to be slower for soils possessing the lowest microbial biomass C (Cmic) and total phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAtotal), which also found statistically significant. Our results revealing the persistence of several organic pollutants in agricultural soils, which might impact the quality of these soils, the groundwater, and eventually on the related biota, is of high environmental significance.

Pharmaceutical residues in the ecosystem: Antibiotic resistance, health impacts, and removal techniques

Hospital wastewater has emerged as a major category of environmental pollutants over the past two decades, but its prevalence in freshwater is less well documented than other types of contaminants. Due to compound complexity and improper operations, conventional treatment is unable to remove pharmaceuticals from hospital wastewater. Advanced treatment technologies may eliminate pharmaceuticals, but there are still concerns about cost and energy use. There should be a legal and regulatory framework in place to control the flow of hospital wastewater. Here, we review the latest scientific knowledge regarding effective pharmaceutical cleanup strategies and treatment procedures to achieve that goal. Successful treatment techniques are also highlighted, such as pre-treatment or on-site facilities that control hospital wastewater where it is used in hospitals. Due to the prioritization, the regulatory agencies will be able to assess and monitor the concentration of pharmaceutical residues in groundwater, surface water, and drinking water. Based on the data obtained, the conventional WWTPs remove 10-60% of pharmaceutical residues. However, most PhACs are eliminated during the secondary or advanced therapy stages, and an overall elimination rate higher than 90% can be achieved. This review also highlights and compares the suitability of currently used treatment technologies and identifies the merits and demerits of each technology to upgrade the system to tackle future challenges. For this reason, pharmaceutical compound rankings in regulatory agencies should be the subject of prospective studies.

Biological-Activity-Based Prioritization of Antidepressants in Wastewater in England and Japan

Antidepressants are one of the most commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals. Although they have been frequently detected in aquatic environments around the globe, little is known regarding their adverse effects on humans and aquatic organisms. Recently, an in vitro monoamine transporter inhibition assay was developed to detect transporter-inhibitory activities of antidepressants in wastewater in Japan. However, it was unclear which antidepressants were responsible for transporter-inhibitory activities in wastewater. Herein, the per capita consumption of 32 antidepressants, their excretion of unchanged parent compounds, per capita water consumption, removal rate during wastewater treatment processes, and potency values from the monoamine transporter inhibition assay were used to prioritize antidepressants of concern in effluent wastewater in England and Japan. In both countries, sertraline and O-desmethylvenlafaxine had the highest contribution to inhibitory activities against the human serotonin transporter (hSERT) and zebrafish SERT (zSERT), respectively. It was found that the antidepressants inhibited the zSERT more strongly than the hSERT. The inhibitory activities found against the zSERT in wastewater in England and Japan were higher than thresholds for abnormal behavior in fish. The antidepressants prioritized in this study provide insight into launching environmental monitoring and ecotoxicological studies of antidepressants.

Comprehensive analysis of the fates and risks of veterinary antibiotics in a small ecosystem comprising a pig farm and its surroundings in Northeast China

This study investigated the behavior of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in a small farm ecosystem. Manure and environmental samples were collected around a large pig farm in northeast China. Thirty-four VAs in six categories were analyzed. Then, a multimedia fugacity model was used to estimate the fates of VAs in the environment. The results showed that VAs were prevalent in manure, soil, water, and sediment, but not in crops. Compared with fresh manure, VA levels were significantly lower in surface manure piles left in the open air for 3-6 months. The main VAs, tetracyclines and quinolones, decreased by 427.12 and 158.45 µg/kg, respectively. VAs from manure piles were transported to the surroundings and migrated vertically into deep soil. The concentrations of ∑VAs detected in agricultural soils were 0.03-4.60 µg/kg; > 94% of the mass inventory of the VAs was retained in soil organic matter (SOM), suggesting that SOM is the main reservoir for antibiotics in soil. Risk assessment and model analysis indicated that the negative impact of mixed antibiotics at low concentrations in farmland on crops may be mediated by indirect effects, rather than direct effects. Our findings highlight the environmental fates and risks of antibiotics from livestock farms.

Pharmaceutical Drugs in Aquatic Environment and their Toxic Effect on <i>Pangasius sp.</i> : An Overview

One of the fastest-growing freshwater fish varieties is the Pangasius sp., which has a great capability for production and export growth. When Pangasius sp. is exposed to substances such as diclofenac, phenol, quinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracycline, even at low environmental exposure levels the fish tissue can develop chronic risk, genetic abnormalities, and histopathological changes. They come into contact with these antibiotics mostly through the discharge of pharmaceutical industry effluents, which contain antibiotic residues that are not been completely eliminated by wastewater treatment, thereby posing environmental concerns when released into aquatic ecosystems. The main objective of this review paper is to study the effect of the concentration of pharmaceutical drugs, farming techniques, and various substitutes for antibiotics that can be utilized to enhance the growth performance of Pangasius sp. Few studies conducted on toxicity demonstrated that increased mucus production in the gills and intestines, histological abnormalities in the liver and skin, and impaired immunoglobulin production have all been linked to sublethal phenol concentrations in fish. The consumption of these contaminated Pangasius sp. can raise various human health concerns. Therefore, exposure of Pangasius sp. to the detrimental pharmaceutical drug from industrial effluent must be held serious concern. Further research is required to conserve human health and the ecosystem.

Adsorptive removal of tetracycline from aqueous solutions using magnetic Fe2O3 / activated carbon prepared from Cynometra ramiflora fruit waste

Herein, the sustainable fabrication of magnetic iron oxide nanoadsorbent prepared with activated carbon of inedible Cynometra ramiflora fruit has been investigated. Activated carbon was obtained from phosphoric acid-treated C. ramiflora fruit, which was then utilized for the synthesis of magnetic nanocomposite (CRAC@Fe₂O₃). The formed nanocomposite was a porous irregular dense matrix of amorphous evenly sized spherical nanoparticles, as visualized by FESEM, and also contained carbon, oxygen, iron, and phosphorous in its elemental composition. FT-IR spectrum depicted characteristic bands attributing to Fe-O, C-OH, C-N, CC, and -OH bonds. VSM and XRD results proved that CRAC@Fe₂O₃ was superparamagnetic with a moderate degree of crystallinity and high saturation magnetization value (1.66 emu/g). Superior surface area, pore size, and pore volume of 766.75 m²/g, 2.11 nm, and 0.4050 cm³/g respectively were measured on BET analysis of CRAC@Fe₂O₃ nanocomposite, indicating their suitability for use as an adsorbent. On application of this nanocomposite for adsorption of tetracycline, maximum removal of 95.78% of 50 ppm TC at pH 4, CRAC@Fe₂O₃ 0.4 g/L in 240 min. The adsorption of TC by CRAC@Fe₂O₃ was confirmed as monolayer sorption by ionic interaction (R² = 0.9999) as it followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.9801). CRAC@Fe₂O₃ showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 312.5 mg/g towards TC antibiotics indicating its potential for the treatment of antibiotic-contaminated samples. Since negative ΔG^o and positive ΔH^o and ΔS^o values were obtained at all tested temperatures during the thermodynamic studies, the adsorption was confirmed to be endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible with an enhanced degree of randomness.

Association between fluoroquinolone exposure and children's growth and development: A multisite biomonitoring-based study in northern China

BACKGROUND

Although animal experiments found that antibiotic exposure during early life increased adiposity, limited human epidemiological evidence is available for the effects of veterinary antibiotic exposure on children's growth and development.

OBJECTIVE

This study was conducted to examine the body burden of fluoroquinolones in northern Chinese children and assess its association with growth and development.

METHODS

After recruiting 233 children aged 0-15 years from 12 different sites in northern China in 2020, we measured urinary concentrations of 5 respective fluoroquinolones (fleroxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin) by high performance liquid chromatography. Categories of children's growth and development were identified based on the Z score of body mass index. The health risks of individual and combined antibiotic exposure were estimated by the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI), respectively. The association between children's growth and development with antibiotic concentrations was evaluated via multiple logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

In total, 4 antibiotics, fleroxacin, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin, were found in urine samples of northern Chinese children at an overall frequency of 57.08%. Due to diet and economic differences, antibiotic concentrations in urine samples differed by study area, and the highest concentrations were found in Tianjin, Henan, and Beijing. The percentage of the participants with HQ > 1 caused by ciprofloxacin exposure was 20.61%, and the HI values in 23.18% of samples exceeded 1, suggesting potential health risks. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of overweight or obesity risk of tertile 2 of enrofloxacin was 3.01 (1.12, 8.11), indicating an increase in overweight or obesity risk for children with middle-concentration enrofloxacin exposure.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to show a positive association of enrofloxacin internal exposure with overweight or obesity risk in children, demonstrating that more attention should be given to the usage and disposal of fluoroquinolones to safeguard children's health.

Impact of water matrices on oxidation effects and mechanisms of pharmaceuticals by ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation technologies: A review

The binding between water components (dissolved organic matters, anions and cations) and pharmaceuticals influences the migration and transformation of pollutants. Herein, the impact of water matrices on drug degradation, as well as the electrical energy demands during UV, UV/catalysts, UV/O₃, UV/H₂O₂-based, UV/persulfate and UV/chlorine processes were systemically evaluated. The enhancement effects of water constituents are due to the powerful reactive species formation, the recombination reduction of electrons and holes of catalyst and the catalyst regeneration; the inhibition results from the light attenuation, quenching effects of the excited states of target pollutants and reactive species, the stable complexations generation and the catalyst deactivation. The transformation pathways of the same pollutant in various AOPs have high similarities. At the same time, each oxidant also can act as a special nucleophile or electrophile, depending on the functional groups of the target compound. The electrical energy per order (EEO) of drugs degradation may follow the order of EEO_UV > EEO_UV/catalyst > EEO_UV/H2O2 > EEO_UV/PS > EEO_UV/chlorine or EEO_UV/O3. Meanwhile, it is crucial to balance the cost-benefit assessment and toxic by-products formation, and the comparison of the contaminant degradation pathways and productions in the presence of different water matrices is still lacking.

Vertical distribution of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in a representative municipal solid waste landfill, China

The vertical distribution of sulfonamides (SAs), tetracyclines (TCs), macrolides (MLs), and their related antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were comprehensively investigated and characterized in a representative municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill in China. The total concentrations of target antibiotics in the MSW landfill were SAs > TCs > MLs. The abundances of mexF (10.78 ± 0.65 log₁₀copies/g) and sul genes (9.15 ± 0.54 log₁₀copies/g) were relatively high, while the tet genes (7.19 ± 0.77 log₁₀copies/g) were the lowest. Both the abundance of antibiotics and genes fluctuated with landfill depth, and the ARGs of the same antibiotics were consistent with depth change. Intl1 and sul genes (sul1, sul2) were tightly connected, and a close relationship also existed between tet genes (tetM, tetQ) and MLs resistance genes (ermB, mefA). High-throughput sequencing showed the dominant genera were Sporosarcina (38%) and Thiobacillus (17%) at sampling points A and C, while the microbial community varied with depth increase at point B were Brevundimonas (20%), Sporosarcina (20%), Pseudomonas (24%), Lysobacter (28%), and Thioalkalimicrobium (14%), respectively. Network analysis further visualized the relationship among antibiotics, genes, and microbial communities and the results indicated the non-random connection among them and the possible host of the target gene. Even at 12.0 m below the landfill surface, the pollution of antibiotics resistance was still serious, which posed difficulties for subsequent landfill remediation and pollution control.

Oxidative Degradation of Pharmaceutical Waste, Theophylline, from Natural Environment

The elimination of organic contaminants from natural resources is extremely important to ensure their (re-)usability. In this report, the degradation of a model pharmaceutical compound, theophylline, is compared between natural and laboratory-controlled environments. While the concentration of H2O2 variably affected the degradation efficiency (approximately from 8 to 20 min for complete degradation) in the photo-irradiation experiments, the inorganic compounds (NaNO3, KH2PO4 and ZnSO4) present in the medium seemed to affect the degradation by scavenging hydroxyl radicals (•OH). The end-product studies using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) ruled out the involvement of secondary radicals in the degradation mechanism. The quantitative calculation with the help of authentic standards pointed out the predominant role of hydroxylation pathways, especially in the initial stages. Although a noticeable decline in the degradation efficiency was observed in river water samples (complete degradation after 25 min with an approximately 20% total organic carbon (TOC) removal), appreciable TOC removal (70%) was eventually achieved after prolonged irradiation (1 h) and in the presence of additional H2O2 (5 times), revealing the potential of our technique. The results furnished in this report could be considered as a preliminary step for the construction of •OH-based wastewater treatment methodologies for the remediation of toxic pollutants from the real environment.

In-situ electrodeposition synthesis of Z-scheme rGO/g-C3N4/TNAs photoelectrodes and its degradation mechanism for oxytetracycline in dual-chamber photoelectrocatalytic system

The dual-chamber photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system possess advantages in the degradation efficiency and processing cost of organic contaminants. In this study, TiO₂ nanotube arrays modified by rGO and g-C₃N₄ (rGO/g-C₃N₄/TNAs) photoelectrodes were successfully prepared. The surface micromorphology, chemical structure, crystal structure, and basic element composition of rGO/g-C₃N₄/TNAs photoelectrodes were studied by SEM, FTIR, XRD, Raman, and XPS. UV-vis absorption, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and photoelectrochemical (PECH) tests were used to explore the photoelectrochemical characteristics of rGO/g-C₃N₄/TNAs photoelectrodes. Under simulated sunlight illumination, the dual-chamber PEC system with external bias voltage was used to investigate the degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) on rGO/g-C₃N₄/TNAs photoelectrodes. The results showed that rGO and g-C₃N₄ were successfully loaded on TNAs, and the separation efficiency of electrons and holes at rGO/g-C₃N₄/TNAs photoelectrodes was improved. The light absorption range of rGO/g-C₃N₄/TNAs photoelectrodes extends to the visible light region and has better light absorption performance. Compared with the photocatalytic process, when 1.2 V bias voltage was applied, the degradation efficiency of OTC in anode and cathode chambers in PEC were increased by 3.28% and 44.01% within 60 min, respectively. In addition, the anode and cathode chambers have different degradation effects on OTC. Both the external bias voltage and initial pH have significant effects in cathode chamber, but have little effect in photoanode chamber. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectra and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry showed that there were different intermediates in the degradation process of OTC. This study indicated that for the dual-chamber PEC system, rGO/g-C₃N₄/TNAs photoelectrodes exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance and have potential application prospects in water environmental remediation.

Distribution and genomic characterization of tigecycline-resistant tet(X4)-positive Escherichia coli of swine farm origin

Abstract

The emergence of plasmid-mediated tigecycline-resistant strains is posing a serious threat to food safety and human health, which has attracted worldwide attention. The tigecycline resistance gene tet (X4) has been found in diverse sources, but the distribution of tet (X4) and its genetic background in the animal farming environment is not fully understood. Thirty-two tet (X)-positive Escherichia coli strains isolated from 159 samples collected from swine farms showed resistance to tigecycline. The tet (X)-positive strains were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility testing, conjugation assay, PCR, Illumina and long-read Nanopore sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis. A total of 11 different sequence types (STs) were identified and most of them belonged to phylogroup A, except ST641. In total, 196 possible prophage sequences were identified and some of the prophage regions were found to carry resistance genes, including tet (X4). Furthermore, our results showed possible correlations between CRISPR spacer sequences and serotypes or STs. The co-existence of tigecycline-resistant tet (A) variants and tet (X4) complicates the evolution of vital resistance genes in farming environments. Further, four reorganization plasmids carrying tet (X4) were observed, and the formation mechanism mainly involved homologous recombination. These findings contribute significantly to a better understanding of the diversity and complexity of tet (X4)-bearing plasmids, an emerging novel public health concern.

Nano-adsorbents an effective candidate for removal of toxic pharmaceutical compounds from aqueous environment: A critical review on emerging trends

Advancements in medical research has resulted in the modernization of healthcare facilities, subsequently leading to a higher level of production and usage of pharmaceuticals to sustain better quality of life. Pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) possess high genotoxicity and eco-toxicity thus presenting numerous side effects to living beings on long-term exposure. The fate and toxicity of PhACs were explored in detail, aiming to elucidate their occurrence and transmission in wastewater treatment systems (WWTPs). Adsorption of pharmaceutical compounds using Nano-adsorbents has gained momentum in recent years owing to their low-cost, high surface area and effectiveness. This review has been conducted in order to widen the utilization of Nano adsorbents in the adsorption of pharmaceutical compounds with a focus on the aqueous environment. The synthesis routes and properties of Nano-adsorbents for removal of PhACs were assessed in a comprehensive way. The recovery and reuse ability of nano-adsorbents also forms an integral part of its application in the removal of PhACs and has hence been delineated.

Occurrence and ecotoxicity of cytostatic drugs 5-fluorouracil and methotrexate in the freshwater unionid Elliptio complanata

Municipal effluents continuously release cytostatic drugs with unknown consequences in aquatic organisms. The purpose of the study was to examine the sublethal toxicity of 2 commonly-found cytostatic drugs 5-fluouracile (5-FLU) and methotrexate (MTX) to endemic Elliptio complanata freshwater mussels. The mussels were exposed of each drugs at 0, 4, 20 and 100 μg/L for 96 h t 15 °C. After the exposure period, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and dehydrofolate reductase (DHFR) activities, DNA damage and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were determined. The drugs were detected in mussel tissues with no evidence of accumulation with either drugs. The drug 5-FLU gave a larger spectrum of effects than MTX such as increased DHFR, decreased LPO and DNA strand breaks (repair activity) suggesting that the mussels were metabolically hindered and reduced DNA repair activity. The drug MTX only increased DHFR activity in the gonad. Hence, the data suggest that these drugs are biologically active in freshwater mussels and based on the reported maximum levels of these drugs in municipal effluents, the observed effects are likely in sessile freshwater mussel species downstream urban sources of pollution.

Advanced Two-Dimensional Heterojunction Photocatalysts of Stoichiometric and Non-Stoichiometric Bismuth Oxyhalides with Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Applications

Semiconductor-based photocatalysis has been identified as an encouraging approach for solving the two main challenging problems, viz., remedying our polluted environment and the generation of sustainable chemical energy. Stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX and BixOyXz where X = Cl, Br, and I) are a relatively new class of semiconductors that have attracted considerable interest for photocatalysis applications due to attributes, viz., high stability, suitable band structure, modifiable energy bandgap and two-dimensional layered structure capable of generating an internal electric field. Recently, the construction of heterojunction photocatalysts, especially 2D/2D systems, has convincingly drawn momentous attention practicably owing to the productive influence of having two dissimilar layered semiconductors in face-to-face contact with each other. This review has systematically summarized the recent progress on the 2D/2D heterojunction constructed between BiOX/BixOyXz with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The band structure of individual components, various fabrication methods, different strategies developed for improving the photocatalytic performance and their applications in the degradation of various organic contaminants, hydrogen (H2) evolution, carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction, nitrogen (N2) fixation and the organic synthesis of clean chemicals are summarized. The perspectives and plausible opportunities for developing high performance BiOX/BixOyXz-g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalysts are also discussed.

Removal of pharmaceutical metabolites in wastewater ozonation including their fate in different post-treatments

Advanced treatment technologies for the removal of pharmaceuticals and other organic micropollutants in WWTPs primarily target the removal of parent compounds. Nevertheless, the removal of metabolites originating from human- or microbial metabolism during biological treatment needs comparable consideration, as some of them might be present in high concentrations and contribute to toxicity. This study was conducted to elucidate the removal of human and microbial metabolites of pharmaceuticals as a function of the specific ozone dose. Ozonation was performed on four sites with two pilot- and two full-scale plants operated downstream of conventional activated sludge plants. The ozone reactivity of all metabolites (expressed as the ozone dose to remove 90% of the compound/decadic ozone dose) was lower than those of their parent compounds. The decadic ozone dose was 1.0, 1.3 and 1.1 mg O₃/mg DOC for Epoxy-carbamazepine, Di-OH-carbamazepine and N-Desmethyl tramadol, respectively. 20-40% of the remaining metabolites were removed in a polishing sand/BAC-filter (biological activated carbon). Similar removal was observed for Epoxy-carbamazepine, Di-OH-carbamazepine and Hydroxy-diclofenac in a constructed wetland. However, the sand/anthracite filter had no effect. All four metabolites were removed in a GAC (granulated activated carbon) filter.

Contamination, distribution, and risk assessment of antibiotics in the urban surface water of the Pearl River in Guangzhou, South China

To assess the impact of antibiotic pollution to the ecosystem in urban water, the occurrence, seasonal, and spatial distributions, potential sources, and ecological risks of 18 targeted antibiotics in urban river, Pearl River located in Guangzhou city, were investigated. Surface water samples were sampled from 24 sites in Guangzhou center of Pearl River during dry and wet seasons. The results indicated that the concentrations of antibiotic residues were at the nanogram per liter level, except sulfamethazine (SMD) (μg/L). Sulfonamides (SAs) were the dominant antibiotics, contributing 60.4-65.0% to the total antibiotics. The concentrations of SAs, fluoroquinolones (QUs), macrolides (MLs), tetracyclines (TCs), and lincosamides (LCs) were higher in dry season than those in wet season at most sampling sites, which possibly resulted from the dilution effect of heavy rainfall. The concentrations of the antibiotic residues in Guangzhou were comparable or higher than other urban rivers. The calculation on risk quotients indicated that erythromycin-H₂O (ETM-H₂O) and tetracycline (TC) were of high risks. The source identification by the Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) method suggested that municipal wastewater treatment plants were primary sources of antibiotics. These results would provide important information for the environmental protect.

Voltammetric Determination of Amoxicillin Using a Reduced Graphite Oxide Nanosheet Electrode

A reduced graphite oxide nanosheet electrode (RGOnS) was prepared as a sensor for amoxicillin (AMX) detection, an antibiotic commonly used in the livestock farm, by the square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry technique. Graphite oxide with nanosheet shape was produced from a graphite electrode by a chronoamperometry process at 5 V and then an electrochemical reduction process was carried out to form RGOnS with restored long-range conjugated networks and better conductivity. The electrodes were characterized by SEM, EDX, and FTIR spectroscopy. The RGOnS electrode prepared at an optimal reduction potential of -1 V for 120 s exhibits a larger electrochemical active surface area, and the obtained oxidation signal of AMX is approximately ten times higher than that of the pristine graphite electrode. The analytical conditions such as the pH of electrolyte and accumulation time were optimized. The calibration curve built under the optimal conditions provided a good linear relationship in the range of AMX concentration from 0.5-80 µM with the correlation coefficient of 0.9992. The limit of detection was calculated as 0.193 µM. Satisfactory results are obtained from the detection of the AMX in different samples using the prepared electrode.

A survey of sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics in the environment

Antibiotics are poorly metabolized, and can enter the environment via human waste streams, agricultural run-off and pharmaceutical effluent. We consequently expect to see a concentration gradient of antibiotic compounds radiating from areas of human population. Such antibiotics should be thought of as pollutants, as they can accumulate, and have biological effects. These antibiotic pollutants can increase rates of mutation and lateral transfer events, and continue to exert selection pressure even at sub-inhibitory concentrations. Here, we conducted a literature survey on environmental concentrations of antibiotics. We collated 887 data points from 40 peer-reviewed papers. We then determined whether these concentrations were biologically relevant by comparing them to their minimum selective concentrations, usually defined as between 1/4 and 1/230 of the minimum inhibitory concentration. Environmental concentrations of antibiotics surveyed often fall into this range. In general, the antibiotic concentrations recorded in aquatic and sediment samples were similar. These findings indicate that environmental concentrations of antibiotics are likely to be influencing microbial ecology, and to be driving the selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Effect of Amoxicillin on Nitrogen Oxidation Bacteria Present in Activated Sludge: Respirometry Investigation

Amoxicillin (AMX) is one of the most widely used antibiotics in the world and its presence in wastewater is of great concern for its potential to bacteria selection. However, there is still a gap about the toxicity effect of AMX in nitrifier biomass from activated sludge (AS). This study is based on the implementation of respirometric tests in batches in order to evaluate the toxic effluent toxicity in the nitrification process of AS. The tests were conducted by comparing respiration rates with effluent containing ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) and nitrite nitrogen (NO₂^--N) called "reference" and batches containing toxic effluent doped with different concentrations of AMX here called "process." Results with effluent containing concentrations greater than 100 mg L^-1 showed that AMX negatively affected the specific growth rate (μ_m) of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) (from 0.50 d^-1 to 0.13 d^-1) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) (from 0.64 d^-1 to 0.15 d^-1). Although there is no total inhibition of populations, these μ_m values are limiting for a feasible development of the nitrification process in AS systems. The removal of AMX decreased from 99 to 37% (liquid phase) when the concentration of AMX increased (20 mg L^-1 to 200 mg L^-1). A decrease in the microbial community AOB and NOB was observed through fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), corroborating the results of respirometry. In summary, the study showed that the inhibition of the AS nitrification process occurs in the presence of high concentrations of AMX and the most susceptible group are the NOB.

Water quality impacts of bridge stormwater runoff from scupper drains on receiving waters: A review

This article provides insight into the environmental significance of bridge deck stormwater runoff from scupper drains on receiving water bodies through a review of over eighty sources of information including research and review articles, technical reports and government websites. This article discusses sources and impacts of stormwater pollutants and presents potential methods for predicting impacts of stormwater runoff on receiving waters from highways and bridges. Records of similarities and possible differences between highway and bridge deck stormwater runoff are provided, and the significance of scupper drains as points of runoff discharge from bridges is discussed. Factors that influence bridge deck stormwater runoff quality include the location of the bridge, dimensions of the bridge deck, composition of the road surface, age of the bridge, design and maintenance of the drainage system, traffic volume, and intensity and frequency of rainfall events. Several pollutants of concern are discussed, such as heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, solids, nutrients, oil, grease, polychlorinated biphenyls, and perfluorinated compounds. This review also discusses available methods for treatment of bridge deck runoff and the challenge of applying these methods for treatment of bridge deck runoff, as compared to treatment of highway runoff. Finally, this article considers the application of the stochastic empirical loading and dilution model (SELDM), a joint product of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Federal Highway Administration, to predict and assess the potential effects of runoff on receiving waters.

Development of an epigenetic tetracycline sensor system based on DNA methylation

Bacterial live cell sensors are potentially powerful tools for the detection of environmental toxins. In this work, we have established and validated a flow cytometry readout for an existing bacterial arabinose sensor system with DNA methylation based memory function (Maier et al., 2017, Nat. Comm., 8:15336). Flow cytometry readout is convenient and enables a multiparameter analysis providing information about single-cell variability, which is beneficial for further development of sensor systems of this type in the future. We then designed a tetracycline sensor system, because of the importance of antibiotics pollution in the light of multi-resistant pathogens. To this end, a tetracycline trigger plasmid was constructed by replacing the araC repressor gene and the ara operator of the arabinose trigger plasmid with the tetR gene coding for the tetracycline repressor and the tet operon. After combination with the memory plasmid, the tetracycline sensor system was shown to be functional in E. coli allowing to detect and memorize the presence of tetracycline. Due to a positive feedback between the trigger and memory systems, the combined whole-cell biosensor showed a very high sensitivity for tetracycline with a detection threshold at 0.1 ng/ml tetracycline, which may be a general property of sensors of this type. Moreover, acute presence of tetracycline and past exposure can be detected by this sensor using the dual readout of two reporter fluorophores.

Spatial and temporal variations of antibiotics in a tidal river

Estuary is an important route for the transport of terrestrial contaminants to the ocean. Its unique hydrodynamic properties may influence the fate and distribution of pollutants. Previous studies have shown that severe pollution because of antibiotics has occurred in many inland surface waterbodies; however, the behavior of antibiotic residuals remains poorly understood in estuarine environments. In this study, the occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of seven selected antibiotics (i.e., sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, and roxithromycin) in a tidal river were investigated through one continuous and four synoptic sampling events. Results show that the concentrations of most antibiotics are in the nanogram per liter level, except for trimethoprim with the highest concentration up to 12,440 ng L^-1 during the wet season. Except for sulfamethazine, the other six antibiotics showed high concentrations (i.e., > 100 ng L^-1) in at least one sampling campaign. Different temporal distribution patterns of these antibiotics indicated that they were mainly controlled by source loading, flow condition, and discharge amounts. Spatial distribution indicated that the main pollution source of trimethoprim was located in lower reaches, while the other six antibiotics mainly came from the upstream sources. Based on the theoretical dilution line, erythromycin and roxithromycin degraded in the tidal river, whereas the other five types of antibiotics showed a conservative behavior. Tide has important effects on the spatial distribution of antibiotics, especially those with a wide concentration range, in estuarine environments. Furthermore, risk assessment based on the calculated risk quotients showed that five types of antibiotics pose high risks to aquatic organisms. These observations provided new insight into the distribution and transport of common antibiotics in estuarine environments.

Identifying targets of potential concern by a screening level ecological risk assessment of human use pharmaceuticals in China

The pollution of pharmaceuticals has attracted a lot of concerns during recent years. The goal of this study was to identify targets of ecological concern considering human use pharmaceuticals marketed in China. We constructed a database for 593 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) by collecting their information on use and emission (e.g. production, human excretion, and removal by wastewater treatment) to calculated predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) by using an adapted European Medicines Agency method. PECs were comparable to the reported measurements for most APIs, demonstrating that the adapted method is reliable for the prioritization practice. Then PECs were compared to toxicity thresholds of three aquatic taxa (algae, daphnia, and fish). As a result, a total of 31 APIs, which were potentially risky and should be taken into consideration in future studies, were identified. Three APIs would pose a high risk with risk quotient (RQ) greater than 10. Six APIs were identified with moderate risks (1 < RQ < 10), and four of them were not reported before: rifaximin, griseofulvin, amikacin, and niclosamide. Of the 22 APIs with low risks (0.1 < RQ < 1), 17 have never been monitored previously in China and even worldwide. This study has yielded some probable antibiotics that should be considered as monitoring targets in China in the future.

Tetracyclines, sulfonamides and quinolones and their corresponding resistance genes in coastal areas of Beibu Gulf, China

As the rapid development of aquaculture in the Beibu Gulf, large number of antibiotics was released into marine aquatic environment. But little integrated studies concerned on the occurrence and correlation of antibiotics with their corresponding ARGs in this region. We investigated the abundance of three prevalent categories of antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), analyzed the potential correlation among antibiotics, ARGs and sediment properties in eight terminal rivers, nine semi-closed sites and eight nearshore areas from Beibu Gulf. Residual concentrations of total antibiotics ranged from 51.04 to 137.64 μg/kg, TETs had higher concentrations than FQs and SAs. Conventional PCR of ARGs revealed intI1, sul2, tetB, tetC and tetG had 100% detection frequency in all samples. Quantitative analysis showed sul genes were dominant compared to tet genes. The abundance of antibiotics and ARGs were decreased from river to open sea. Significant correlations (p < .05) between intI1 and ARGs (sul2 and tetG) were revealed by Pearson analysis, indicating that intI1 gene played a significant role in the occurrence and diffusion of ARGs. Significant correlations among the ARGs, the corresponding or irrelevant residual antibiotics and sediment characteristics were observed by redundancy analysis and network. Due to the potential health risks of antibiotics with corresponding ARGs, the control and treatment measures should deserve wide attention.

Amoxicillin removal by pre-denitrification membrane bioreactor (A/O-MBR): Performance evaluation, degradation by-products, and antibiotic resistant bacteria

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are one of the treatment technologies with the potential to remove emerging compounds from wastewater. The present work evaluated the efficiency of an MBR pilot system in removing amoxicillin from synthetic wastewater using a continuous flow pre-denitrification MBR (A/O-MBR) pilot unit. The system operated in three phases: (1) synthetic wastewater and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 40 h; (2) adding amoxicillin 100 μg L^-1 to the influent, and (3) varying flowrate to HRT of 20 h. Liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry analysis confirmed the presence of five amoxicillin degradation by-products in the effluent. The addition of amoxicillin did not affect chemical oxygen demand (COD) or dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal efficiencies. Respirometry showed that amoxicillin level did not inhibit heterotrophic bacteria metabolism. The change in HRT reduced the DOC removal (from 84% to 66%) but did not influence COD (>94%) or total nitrogen (>72%). The amoxicillin and by-products removal decreased from 80% to 54% with HRT change. Adsorption and biodegradation represented the largest removed fraction of the antibiotic in the A/O-MBR system (68%). Ecotoxicity assays showed P. fluorescens was more resistant and E. coli less resistant to amoxicillin residues at effluent sample matrix.

Molecularly imprinted polymers-captivity ZnO nanorods for sensitive and selective detecting environmental pollutant

To develop the semiconductor of ZnO nanomaterials as the fluorescence sensor without leakage toxicity. Here, a molecularly imprinted polymer captivity ZnO nanorods (NRs) (MIPs-captivity ZnO NRs) was fabricated by precipitation polymerization. Such traditional technology was not only achieved the specific recognition for direct fluorescent quantification of the target tetracycline (TC) through fluorescence quenching, but also formed the shield to reduce the toxic effects of ZnO towards organisms. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the MIPs-captivity ZnO NRs were effectively applied to the direct fluorescence quantification of TC with excellent stability. Moreover, the practical analytical performance of the MIPs-captivity ZnO NRs was assayed by appraising the detection effects of TC in water sample from the Yangtze River with satisfactory results.

Environmental risk assessment of diclofenac residues in surface waters and wastewater: a hidden global threat to aquatic ecosystem

Pharmaceuticals are chemical compounds employed as medicinal drugs. They have severe physic-chemical properties which make them destructive for non-target species. Consequently, their continuous addition in the environment may pose hazardous effects. Among these, diclofenac (DCF), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is extensively used in Pakistan which may lead to its accumulation in both terrestrial and aquatic environment. Present study aims to assess the presence and concentration of pharmaceutically active drug (DCF) in surface water and wastewater of twin cities of Pakistan (Rawalpindi and Islamabad). For this purpose, a validated high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was adopted involving solid-phase extraction procedure. Wastewater samples were collected from various sites of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Results of HPLC analysis revealed that DCF was extant with considerably high concentration, not only in wastewater but also in surface water samples. Concentrations as high as 216 μg L^-1 was detected in Rawat industrial area and low as 8 μg L^-1 was detected in dairy farm wastewater samples collected from Taramri. However, maximum DCF levels in residential wastewater and hospital wastewater were detected to be 105 μg L^-1 and 34 μg L^-1, respectively. Moreover, the highest detected level (116 μg L^-1) was found in surface water of Sawan River. Further, results of ecological risk assessment revealed its possible toxic effects of DCF on various aquatic organisms.

Hormesis-induced gap between the guidelines and reality in ecological risk assessment

Guidelines of ecological risk assessment (ERA) used worldwide, based on S-shaped threshold dose-response curve, fail to consider hormesis, a biphasic dose-response model represented as a J-shaped or an inverted U-shaped curve, that occurs in real-life environment. Now that humans are routinely exposed to chemicals below the threshold where hormetic stimulation prevails, it is noteworthy that over-strictness about chemical control also means a waste of limited resources. So hormesis leads to the gap between guidelines with S-shaped model and reality with hormesis model concerning ERA. In this study, hormetic effects of sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) on the bioluminescence of Aliivibrio fischeri (A. f) under 41 conditions to simulate the real environment were investigated and compared with ERA practice by some parameters, such as no observed effect concentration (NOEC), hormetic-stimulatory range (HSR) and goal concentration (GC). Not only is the reproducibility of hormesis in real-life contexts confirmed, binomial distribution (p = 0.644 > 0.05) of the relative position of GC and HSR is also found, revealing a 50% probability for GC to falls in HSR, which proves the over-strictness of ERA both qualitatively and quantitatively. This study provides a novel view for ERA that hormetic principles should dominate, and conditions where S-shaped dose-response model works should be singled out on a specific basis to bridge the hormesis-induced gap.

Biological Activity-Based Prioritization of Pharmaceuticals in Wastewater for Environmental Monitoring: G Protein-Coupled Receptor Inhibitors

Pharmaceuticals raise concerns for aquatic species owing to their biological activities. It is estimated that nearly 40% of marketed pharmaceuticals target G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Using an in vitro transforming growth factor-α (TGFα) shedding assay, we previously detected antagonistic activities of GPCR-acting pharmaceuticals against angiotensin (AT1), dopamine (D2), acetylcholine (M1), adrenergic family members (β1), and histamine (H1) receptors at up to μg-antagonist-equivalent quantities/L in wastewater in England and Japan. However, which pharmaceuticals were responsible for biological activities in wastewater remained unclear. Here, we used (1) the consumption of GPCR-acting pharmaceuticals, particularly antagonists, as calculated from prescriptions, (2) their urinary excretion, and (3) their potency measured by the TGFα shedding assay to prioritize them for analysis in wastewater in England and Japan. We calculated predicted activities of 48 GPCR-acting pharmaceuticals in influents in England and Japan and identified which were mainly responsible for antagonistic activities in wastewater against each GPCR. Mixtures of pharmaceuticals tested in this study were confirmed to behave additively. The combination of consumption and potency is useful in prioritizing pharmaceuticals for environmental monitoring and toxicity testing.

Carbamazepine, cadmium chloride and polybrominated diphenyl ether-47, synergistically modulate the expression of antioxidants and cell cycle biomarkers, in the marine fish cell line SAF-1

A wide range of contaminants, industrial by-products, plastics, and pharmaceutics belonging to various categories, have been found in sea water. Although these compounds are detected at concentrations that might be considered as sub-lethal, under certain conditions they could act synergistically producing unexpected effects in term of toxicity or perturbation of biochemical markers leading to standard pathway. In this study, the Sparus aurata fibroblast cell line SAF-1, was exposed to increasing concentrations of carbamazepine (CBZ), polybrominated diphenyl ether 47 (BDE-47) and cadmium chloride (CdCl₂) until 72 h, to evaluate the cytotoxicity and the expression of genes related to antioxidant defense, cell cycle and energetic balance. In general, both vitality and gene expression were affected by the exposure to the different toxicants, in terms of antioxidant defense and cell cycle control, showing the most significant effects in cells exposed to the mixture of the three compounds, respect to the single compounds separately. The synergic effect of the compounds on the analyzed biomarkers, underlie the potential negative impact of the contaminants on health of marine organisms.

Tetracycline removal by double-metal-crosslinked alginate/graphene hydrogels through an enhanced Fenton reaction

Polymer hydrogel usually has limited catalytic activity and stability in Fenton catalysis. Here, we presented for the first time the preparation of a novel double-metal-crosslinked alginate hydrogel using graphene oxide to facilitate the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycles. Five multivalent metal cations were used as crosslinkers to prepare different alginate-GO-M (Fe(III), Fe(II), La(III), Ce(III), and Co(II)), and the effects of assisted metal cations (La(III), Ce(III), and Co(II)) on different Fe(II) bimetallic alginate-GO-Fe-M(AG-Fe-M) complexes were investigated. Double-metal-crosslinked alginate-GO hydrogels can degrade tetracycline much faster during the initial 10 min than single-metal-crosslinked hydrogels. In addition, the release of iron from AG-Fe-Ce (10.59 ppm) was less than that from AG-Fe-Co (21.57 ppm) and AG-Fe-La (25.6 ppm) during the Fenton reaction. More importantly, the AG-Fe-Ce did not release TOC and maintained most of the catalytic activity after four reuse cycles, confirmed its excellent stability. For the treatment of raw water containing a high proportion of proteinaceous matter and tetracycline, the AG-Fe-Ce significantly reduced the molecular weight of the dissolved organic matter. We deduced that the humic acid and protein show good complexation ability to tetracycline, thereby reduced its bioavailability. This study provides new insights into the synthesis of polymer catalysts for water treatment.

Distribution and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals in surface water of the Yeongsan river, Republic of Korea

This study examined the distribution of pharmaceuticals in Yeongsan River and at point sources (PSs) in the associated water system, and performed a risk assessment based on our findings. The samples included effluents collected from three sewage treatment plants (PS1, PS2, and PS3) and two industrial complexes (PS4 and PS5) as well as surface water collected from seven mainstreams and 11 tributaries of the river. The target pharmaceuticals were acetylsalicylic acid, carbamazepine, clarithromycin, naproxen, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfathiazole, and trimethoprim, which were detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. All pharmaceuticals except acetylsalicylic acid and sulfathiazole were found in PS1, PS2, and PS3 samples, whereas acetylsalicylic acid, carbamazepine, sulfamethazine, and sulfamethoxazole were found in PS4, most of the pharmaceuticals were not present in PS5. The rank order of pharmaceutical concentration in surface water was carbamazepine (97.2%, 0.2067 μg/L) > sulfamethoxazole (88.9%, 0.1132 μg/L) > naproxen (51.4%, 0.0516 μg/L) > clarithromycin (43.1%, 0.0427 μg/L). The distribution of pharmaceuticals in the Yeongsan River at PSs and non-PSs differed, and higher concentrations of human pharmaceuticals were detected in upstream and midstream areas whereas higher concentrations of animal pharmaceuticals were found downstream. Hazard quotients (HQs) evaluated at each sites based on mean concentration and 95% upper confidence limits (95% UCLs) were all less than one, indicating a low risk of toxicity. The findings of this study are expected to be useful for risk assessment of aquatic ecosystems.

Occurrence and Risk Assessment of Antibiotics in Manure, Soil, Wastewater, Groundwater from Livestock and Poultry Farms in Xuzhou, China

Antibiotics in manure, soil, wastewater, and groundwater samples from the livestock and poultry farms in Xuzhou City were investigated in the present study. The concentrations of antibiotics in all matrices varied greatly among farms. Total concentrations of fluoroquinolones and macrolides were much higher than those of sulfonamides in manures and soil samples. Total concentrations of antibiotics in wastewater of livestock farms were higher than those of poultry farm. Josamycin (JM) and tilmicosin (TIL) accounted for more than 74% of the nine macrolides in all groundwater samples. Sulfamethizole (SMT), fleroxacin (FLE), cinoxacin (CIN) and JM were the main antibiotics detected in manure and soil samples, while sulfamethoxypyridazine (SMP), sulfameter (SME), SMT, FLE, JM and TIL accounted for a large proportion of antibiotics in surface and groundwater. The risk assessment of target antibiotics revealed that JM in wastewater showed relatively high RQs for aquatic organisms.

Identification of effective parameters for anti-inflammatory concentration in València City's wastewater using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis

The current literature about pharmaceutical and personal care compounds (PPCPs) focuses on identifying their concentration and toxicological risk both in surface water and in wastewater. However, the influence of urban areas (population ageing, income level, hospitals and others) has not yet been analysed. Knowing how a population (and its facilities) affects PPCPs' presence in wastewater is important to identify the conditions that are responsible for their presence. In this work, the influence of water consumption, population ageing, income level, hospitals and nursing homes on the anti-inflammatory concentration have been analysed. To fill the gap between the quantitative data on PPCPs' concentration and the qualitative reasoning of the influence of urban areas on the anti-inflammatory concentration, the use of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is proposed. The fsQCA results are presented as recipes that show the different causal combinations of conditions that explain the presence of anti-inflammatories in wastewater. Using fsQCA for urban wastewater management with the aim of explaining the presence of anti-inflammatories in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a novelty in the literature. The results obtained here show the influence of water consumption (WATCON), hospitals (HOSP) and population ageing (POPAG) as the main conditions for the anti-inflammatory concentration in Valèncian wastewater. Specifically, these conditions are present in all the recipes obtained with consistency of 99%. Through the results obtained, it would be possible to identify that HOSP are the main facilities that discharge anti-inflammatories into urban wastewater. Hence, the necessity of preventive measures to avoid the anti-inflammatory discharge into water bodies has been showed. Furthermore, under a methodological point of view, this work highlights the eligibility of fsQCA as a wastewater cycle management tool.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water, sediments, aquatic organisms, and fish feeds in the Pearl River Delta: Occurrence, distribution, potential sources, and health risk assessment

This study investigated the occurrence, distribution, and potential sources of 34 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water, sediments, aquatic organisms (fish and shellfish), and fish feeds from the mariculture areas of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The health risk presented by this class of compounds was also assessed in relation to their intake via seafood consumption. Of the 34 PPCPs, a total of 9, 21, 14, and 28 PPCPs were detected in water, sediments, fish feeds, and aquatic organisms, respectively. Trimethoprim, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and spectinomycin were detected in all matrices. The levels of PPCPs in water and sediment samples were relatively low. Spectinomycin, paracetamol, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ibuprofen were the most frequently detected PPCPs in feeds. Ibuprofen and ketoprofen were widely detected in aquatic organisms, with average concentrations of 562 and 267 ng/g wet weight, respectively. The residual levels of PPCPs in shellfish such as ME (mussel, Mytilus edulis) and OS (oyster, Ostrea gigas) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those in other species including CA (topmouth culter, Culter alburnus) and EO (orbfish, Ephippus orbis). Correlation analysis indicated that the medicated feeds were a potential source of PPCPs in the mariculture areas of the PRD, but other anthropogenic sources should not be ignored. Based on maximum residue limits and acceptable daily intake, the health risks presented to humans via seafood consumption are negligible. However, as multiple antibiotics were frequently detected in the mariculture environment, aquatic organisms, and feeds, the induction and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance associated with antibiotic usage in aquaculture would be of great concern. It is necessary to establish a centralized management system and control the use of veterinary drugs in mariculture to protect the aquaculture environment and ensure the safety of seafood.

Ecotoxicological Effect of Single and Combined Exposure of Carbamazepine and Cadmium on Female Danio rerio: A Multibiomarker Study

In aquatic environments, organisms are exposed to mixtures of pollutants which may change the toxicity profile of each contaminant, compared to its toxicity alone. Carbamazepine (CBZ) and cadmium (Cd) are among the pollutants that co-occur in aquatic environments. To date, most research about their toxicity towards aquatic vertebrates is based on single exposure experiments. The present study aims to evaluate single and combined effects of CBZ and Cd on biomarkers in female Danio rerio (zebrafish) by exposing them to environmentally relevant concentrations of these two pollutants for ten days. Four kinds of biomarkers involved in antioxidant systems, energy metabolism, nervous system, and endocrine disruption, respectively, were studied. Our research results coincided with those of former studies in single exposure experiments. However, the combined exposure of CBZ and Cd exerted different responses from other studies in which these two contaminants were examined alone in zebrafish. The present study evidenced the need to conduct more coexposure studies to enhance the environmental relevance of these experimental results.
