Emission characterization of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants from iron ore sintering process in China

Linking industrial emissions and dietary exposure to human burdens of polychlorinated naphthalenes

Relationships between toxic pollutant emissions during industrial processes and toxic pollutant dietary intakes and adverse health burdens have not yet been quantitatively clarified. Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are typical industrial pollutants that are carcinogenic and of increasing concern. In this study, we established an interpretable machine learning model for quantifying the contributions of industrial emissions and dietary intakes of PCNs to health effects. We used the SHapley Additive exPlanations model to achieve individualized interpretability, enabling us to evaluate the specific contributions of individual feature values towards PCNs concentration levels. A strong relationship between PCN dietary intake and body burden was found using a robust large-scale PCN diet survey database for China containing the results of the analyses of 17,280 dietary samples and 4480 breast milk samples. Industrial emissions and dietary intake contributed 12 % and 52 %, respectively, of the PCN burden in breast milk. The model quantified the contributions of food consumption and industrial emissions to PCN exposure, which will be useful for performing accurate health risk assessments and developing reduction strategies of PCNs.

Emission reduction of PCDD/Fs by flue gas recirculation and activated carbon in the iron ore sintering

One of the main sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the environment is the sintering of iron ore. Both flue gas recirculation (FGR) and activated carbon (AC), which have the impact of decreasing both PCDD/Fs and conventional pollutants (NOx, SO2, etc.), are significant technologies for the abatement of PCDD/Fs from the sintering exhaust gas. This work involved the first measurement of PCDD/Fs emissions during FGR and a thorough analysis of the impact of PCDD/Fs reduction following the coupling of FGR and AC technologies. According to the measured data, the ratio of PCDFs to PCDDs in the sintered flue gas was 6.8, indicating that during the sintering process, the PCDD/Fs were primarily produced by de novo synthesis. Further investigation revealed that FGR initially removed 60.7% of PCDD/Fs by returning it to the high temperature bed, and AC further removed 95.2% of the remaining PCDD/Fs through physical adsorption. While AC is better at removing PCDFs and can efficiently remove tetra-to octa-chlorinated homologs, FGR is more effective at removing PCDDs and has higher removal efficiency for hexa-to octa-chlorinated PCDD/Fs. Together, they complement each other with a removal rate of 98.1%. The study's findings are instructional for the process design of combining FGR and AC technologies to reduce PCDD/Fs in the sintered flue gas.

Target the neglected VOCs emission from iron and steel industry in China for air quality improvement

Recent years have witnessed significant improvement in China's air quality. Strict environmental protection measures have led to significant decreases in sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NO _x ), and particulate matter (PM) emissions since 2013. But there is no denying that the air quality in 135 cities is inferior to reaching the Ambient Air Quality Standards (GB 3095-2012) in 2020. In terms of temporal, geographic, and historical aspects, we have analyzed the potential connections between China's air quality and the iron and steel industry. The non-target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions from iron and steel industry, especially from the iron ore sinter process, may be an underappreciated index imposing a negative effect on the surrounding areas of China. Therefore, we appeal the authorities to pay more attention on VOCs emission from the iron and steel industry and establish new environmental standards. And different iron steel flue gas pollutants will be eliminated concurrently with the promotion and application of new technology.

Concentrations, congener patterns, and correlations of unintentional persistent organic pollutants in cement kilns co-processing hazardous waste

Emissions from two typical cement kilns co-processing different kind of hazardous waste were analyzed for 143 congeners of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls, polychlorinated naphthalenes, polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. The congener distributions in different process stages were investigated. One of the plants co-processed waste chemical reagents from laboratories. The emission factor (TEQ basis) for the plant was 2.09 ng WHO2005 TEQ/t, with the kiln head and the kiln back end contributing 1.18, 0.91 ng WHO2005 TEQ/t, respectively. The other plant co-processed municipal waste incineration fly ash. The emission factor for the plant was 0.12 ng WHO2005 TEQ/t, with the kiln head and the kiln back end contributing 0.022, and 0.10 ng WHO2005 TEQ/t. These results indicate that co-processing of waste containing reagents from laboratories may lead to higher emission levels than co-processing of other types of waste. The congener patterns of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in ash samples from the humidifier tower were similar to those in samples from the bag filter at the kiln back end. The correlation coefficients of five pollutants between the humidifier and bag filters samples were generally high, which indicated that conditions in those two stages similarly favored the formation of these POPs. Comparison of the concentrations for different process stages suggested that the main stage for formation of unintentional POPs was the humidifier tower. These results improve our understanding of emission characteristics and could be used for simultaneous control of multiple POPs.

Catalytic activity and stability of a Cr modified Co–Fe LDO catalyst in the simultaneous catalytic reduction of NOx and oxidation of o-DCB

In this paper, a Co–Fe LDO catalyst was prepared by combining K2Cr2O7 and Cr(NO3)3 to modify the LDH precursor.

Toxic organic pollutants in Greek house dust: Implications for human exposure and health risk

Organic contaminants often documented in house dust include mainly chemicals released from construction materials and consumer products and compounds emitted from indoor combustion activities. The occurrence of major chemical classes of toxic organic pollutants, included polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs), was for the first time investigated in house dust in Greece. The mean concentrations of ∑₁₆PAHs, ∑₂₀PBDEs, ∑₇NPAHs and∑₁₅PCBs in house dust were 4650 ng g^-1, 564 ng g^-1, 7.52 ng g^-1, and 6.29 ng g^-1, respectively. Exposure to dust organic contaminants via ingestion, inhalation and dermal absorption was estimated for two age classes (adults and children) and carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were assessed. The hazard index (HI) for adults and children for PBDEs, PCBs, PAHs and NPAHs in all samples was less than 1 suggesting a very low level of concern for all human age group due to exposure to those chemicals. Total carcinogenic risk via the three exposure pathways (ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact) was within the safe range of 10^-6 to 10^-4.

Occurrence, profiles, and control of unintentional POPs in the steelmaking industry: A review

The steelmaking industry is an important source of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UP-POPs). This review summarizes the emission levels, characteristics, and formation mechanisms of UP-POPs, including halogenated dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, polychlorinated naphthalenes, and penta- and hexa- chlorobenzenes in the steelmaking industry to improve our understanding of the emissions of UP-POPs from the steelmaking industry. The factors influencing UP-POP formation during the iron ore sintering (IOS) process are also reviewed. The raw materials and temperature during the steelmaking process are important factors influencing UP-POP generation. Raw materials containing plastics, paints, cutting oil, rubber, and iron from electronic waste recycling can contribute to high emissions of UP-POPs during steelmaking processes. Electrostatic precipitator dust contains chlorine, carbon, and metals, which are usually recycled as a component of the raw material, and could also promote dioxin formation and emissions from IOS. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are easily formed in high concentrations at temperatures in the range of 200 °C-650 °C. This review also provides a comprehensive summary of the UP-POP emission limits in the steel industry worldwide and the best available techniques and environmental practices for UP-POP emission reduction. The information in this review will be useful for the reduction of UP-POPs in the steelmaking process.

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Emissions from Steelmaking Electric Arc Furnaces

Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) in steelmaking plants are a major source of dioxins. Preheating of steelmaking raw materials is widely used in EAFs to reduce energy consumption. Few studies have investigated emissions of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from EAFs, and the PCB emission levels and characteristics during preheating are unknown. In this study, PCB concentrations and distributions in stack gases emitted during EAF preheating were determined. The average dioxin-like PCB concentrations in stack gases emitted during preheating of three EAFs were 1236.1, 81,664.4, and 669.8 pg/Nm³, respectively. These values were greatly influenced by the composition of the steelmaking raw materials. The PCB profiles in all samples were dominated by less-chlorinated homologs. PCB emission factor for preheating in the EAFs is 0.58 µg WHO-TEQ/ton averagely, indicating significant emissions of PCBs from preheating process. The data will be useful for developing approaches for preventing and controlling PCB emissions from EAFs.

Concentrations, profiles, emission inventory, and risk assessment of chlorinated benzenes in bottom ash and fly ash of municipal and medical waste incinerators in northern Vietnam

Concentrations and congener profiles of seven di- to hexachlorinated benzenes (CBzs) were characterized in bottom ash and fly ash samples collected simultaneously from one medical waste incinerator (MEWI) and one municipal waste incinerator (MUWI) in northern Vietnam. Total concentrations of seven CBzs in the fly ash samples ranged from 6.98 to 34.4 (median 19.1) ng g^-1 in the MEWI, and ranged from 59.1 to 391 (median 197) ng g^-1 in the MUWI. Concentrations of CBzs in the bottom ash samples of the MEWI (median 1.95; range 1.53-5.98 ng g^-1) were also lower than those measured in the MUWI samples (median 17.4; range 14.5-42.6 ng g^-1). Levels of CBzs in the fly ash samples were significantly higher than concentrations measured in the bottom ash samples, partially indicating the low-temperature catalytic formation of these pollutants in post-combustion zone. In general, higher chlorinated congeners (e.g., hexachlorobenzene, pentachlorobenzene, and 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene) were more abundant than lower chlorinated compounds. However, compositional profiles of CBzs were different between the ash types and incinerators and even between the same sample types of different sampling days, suggesting that the formation of CBzs in these incinerators is complicated and influenced by many factors. Emission factors and annual emission amounts of CBzs were estimated for the two incinerators by using actually measured data of CBz concentrations in the ash. Daily intake doses and cancer risks of ash-bound CBzs estimated for workers in the two incinerators were generally lower than critical values, but cancer risks caused by other relevant pollutants (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and dioxin-related compounds) were not considered.

Inhibition Effect and Mechanism of Thiourea on Electrophilic Chlorination of Aromatics in Combustion Flue Gas

Thiourea can effectively inhibit the formation of highly toxic chlorinated aromatics in postcombustion zone. However, the inhibition mechanism was still not adequately understood. In this study, naphthalene was adopted as a model aromatic compound to investigate the inhibition effect and mechanism of thiourea on the formation of chlorinated aromatics via electrophilic chlorination over Cu and Fe chlorides. Thiourea addition resulted in the reductions of 77.6-99.8% and 36.4-98.1% in the yield of polychlorinated naphthalenes from naphthalene chlorination mediated by CuCl₂ and FeCl₃ at 150-300 °C, respectively. The inhibition efficiency of chlorination presented a decreasing tendency with increasing reaction temperature and O₂ content in flue gas. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the thiourea-induced reduction of highly active Cu (II) and Fe (III) chlorides to less active Cu (I) and Fe (II) chlorides was a primary mechanism for inhibiting aromatic chlorination. [thiourea-Cu]⁺ complex generated during the reduction process could be transformed into CuS and Cu₂S, and isomeric reaction product NH₄SCN could react with Cu²⁺ to produce Cu(SCN)₂ and then also form Cu sulfides, suggesting sulfidization of Cu chloride was another important inhibition mechanism. Chlorination inhibition induced by the volatile decomposition products of thiourea might only play a minor role.

Concentrations and profiles of persistent organic pollutants unintentionally produced by secondary nonferrous metal smelters: Updated emission factors and diagnostic ratios for identifying sources

Secondary nonferrous metal smelters are important sources of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UPOPs) including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes, pentachlorobenzene, and hexachlorobenzene. Quantifying UPOP emissions by the main sources is an important step when evaluating UPOP emissions and establishing an inventory. In this study, field investigations were performed to allow UPOP emissions and distributions in stack gases emitted by secondary nonferrous metal smelters to be compared. A total of 25 stack gas samples were collected from secondary copper smelters (SCus), secondary zinc smelters, and secondary lead smelters in China. The mean toxic equivalent concentrations (TEQs) and mass concentrations of most of the UPOPs were highest in the secondary zinc smelter stack gas samples, next highest in the SCu stack gas samples, and lowest in the secondary lead smelter stack gas samples. The mean dioxin-like PCB and polychlorinated naphthalene TEQs were ∼8.9 and ∼6.6 times higher in stack gases from a SCu equipped with an oxygen-enriched smelting furnace than in stack gases from a SCu with a converter furnace. The mean PCB-118 to PCB-123 ratios and CN-10 to CN-35 ratios varied strongly and could be used as diagnostic ratios for apportioning the sources of UPOPs in the environment. Emission factors for dioxin-like PCBs, polychlorinated naphthalenes, pentachlorobenzene, and hexachlorobenzene in stack gases from secondary nonferrous metal smelters were derived and updated. The results improve our understanding of UPOP emission and provide data for establishing UPOP emission inventories for secondary nonferrous metal smelters.

Research on pollution prevention and control BAT of PCDD/Fs in secondary copper industry

Secondary copper industry has received more and more attention due to its high Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) emissions. Best available technologies (BAT) plays an important role in prevention of PCDD/Fs pollution for secondary copper industry and is recommended by the Stockholm Convention on POPs. In this study, AHP-Delphi method-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is used to evaluate the 5 smelting technologies that are usually applied in secondary copper industry. The result shows that the Kaldo smelting technology and Ausmelt/ISA smelting technology rank top because of its superior technical performance and good environmental benefits. Then, Kaldo furnace and bag filter were selected as a preliminary validation study on the feasibility of BAT. The results of PCDD/Fs analysis showed that the combination of Kaldo furnace and bag filter can meet the requirements of PCDD/Fs pollution prevention and should be recommended for the treatment of low grades copper scrap.

Long-term emission sampling validation for PCDD/Fs control of compliance to permitted Emission Limit Values at a large sinter plant

Continuous sampling of emission into air of dioxins has been one of the targets of Directive 2010/75/EU Of The European Parliament And Of The Council on industrial emissions (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control, IED Directive) since year 2010. The present research was aimed at verifying the applicability of a long-term sampling system at the sinter plant of a large steel works in Taranto, Southern Italy, and to perform its validation compared to the standard reference method. Automated long-term samplings of 15 and 30 d were performed in parallel with manual short-term sampling, the latter with a frequency of two per week. Concentrations range was 0.05-0.20 ng I-TEQ/N m3 thus ensuring good coverage around the level of interest of 0.1 ng I-TEQ/N m3, as a typical Emission Limit Value for combustion plants. In addition the long-term device was used for short-time sampling in parallel with manual sampling showing an external variability between ± 0.05 ng I-TEQ/N m3 thus proving to be acceptable. As a result of the successful validation trial the long term emission sampling was enforced as Emission Limit Value official control technique.

Thermochemical formation of multiple unintentional persistent organic pollutants on metallurgical fly ash and their correlations

Metallurgical processes are currently the predominant anthropogenic sources of multiple unintentional persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated and brominated PAHs (Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs). Understanding the formation of multiple POPs is important for source control. These POPs could be formed through fly ash-mediated heterogeneous reactions. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the thermochemical (150-450 °C) formation of these POPs on fly ash samples collected from a secondary aluminum smelter, secondary lead smelter, and iron ore sintering plant. The maximum concentrations of PCNs and PCBs were 154.5 and 181.3 times those in the original fly ash, respectively. Formation variations of PAHs, Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs, and PBDEs were different from that of PCBs and PCNs. The PAHs concentration, which was the highest among the POPs in the original fly ash, decreased sharply by 95% at 150 °C. The ∑₁₉Cl-PAHs and ∑₁₉Br-PAHs increased marginally at 250 °C before decreasing slightly at 350 °C. The PBDE concentrations decreased under 250 °C and increased at 350 °C. PCNs, PCBs, and PCDD/Fs showed good correlations, all of which had a negative relationship with the PAHs. There were no significant correlations between PAHs and Cl/Br-PAHs. Low brominated congeners could be formed by destruction of higher brominated congeners because of thermal instability of the PBDEs.

Characterization of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in flue gas from thermal industrial processes in Vietnam: A comprehensive investigation on emission profiles and levels

The emission profiles and levels of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (U-POPs) comprising polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) were comprehensively investigated in flue gas released from 20 facilities belonging to 11 thermal industrial processes in Vietnam. Levels and patterns of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in flue gas samples varied widely between sectors and different facilities in the same sector, suggesting different formation mechanisms involved. Flue gas concentrations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs generally decreased in the order: industrial waste incinerator > secondary zinc production > coal fired craft boiler > coal fired power plant ≈ medical waste incinerator > steel production ≈ cement production > secondary copper production > coal fired industrial boiler > secondary tin production ≈ municipal waste incinerator. Results obtained from diagnostic ratio and fingerprint analysis have revealed that the stack emissions of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs were probably attributed to the de novo formation and incomplete destruction of input materials containing technical PCB oils or paints. The average emission factors of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs ranged from 0.011 to 374 μg WHO-TEQ tonne^-1 for the studied facilities. A total emission amount of 4.89-11.4 g WHO-TEQ year^-1 was estimated for the 20 facilities investigated in our study. This is the first comprehensive investigation on the unintentional emissions of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs from a wide range of industrial sectors in Vietnam.

Parameters affecting the formation mechanisms of dioxins in the steel manufacture process

With the implementation of the new national standards in the steel industry, dioxins (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs)) emission and control have attracted more and more attention in China. The PCDD/Fs levels and signatures of nine steelmaking materials and by-products were experimentally analysed and compared, including five kinds of steelmaking fly ash (sintering fly ash, basic oxygen furnace fly ash, electric arc furnace fly ash and two kinds of blast furnace fly), three kind of steel sludge (continuous casting sludge, hot rolling sludge and cold rolling sludge) and sintering raw material. Dioxin formation from the sintering fly ash was highest of all 9 materials. Furthermore, highly chlorinated PCDD/Fs homologues were abundant in that sample, while the profiles were contrary to those of other materials. More importantly, the entire isomer signatures of all 61 samples were analysed, involving various materials, temperatures, oxygen levels, particle size and inhibitors, with special emphasis on those congeners associated with chlorophenol precursor routes, as well as seventeen 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs. Strong correlation was found among seven PCDD-congeners of CP-route. The analysis of the molecular structure of these congeners revealed that 2,4,6/2,3,5-trichlorophenol may act as a precursor to form all those PCDD-congeners by condensation. In addition, the influence of various factors (temperature, oxygen level, particle size, inhibitors addition etc.) on the relative importance of CP-route congeners and 2,3,7,8-substituted congeners was discussed, with the goal of shedding more light on the mechanism of PCDD/Fs-formation.

The ignored emission of volatile organic compounds from iron ore sinter process

Iron ore sintering is a major source of gaseous and particulate pollutants emission in iron smelt plant. The aim of present study is to characterize the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission profiles from iron ore sintering process. Both sinter pot test and sinter simulation experiment were conducted and compared. Out results showed that sinter process produced large quantity of VOCs together with NO_x and SO₂. VOCs and NO were produced simultaneously in sinter pot test from 3 to 24 min after ignition, flowed by SO₂ production from 15 min to the end of sintering. Total VOCs (TVOC) concentration in sinter flue gas was affected by the coal and coke ratio in sinter raw material. The maximum TVOC concentration was 34.5 ppm when using 100% coal as fuel. Sinter simulation experiments found that the number of VOCs species and their concentrations were found by sinter temperature. The largest VOCs species varieties were obtained at 500 °C. Benzene, toluene, xylene and ethylbenzene were major VOCs in sinter flue gas based on the results from both simulation test and sinter pot. It thus demonstrated that in addition to NO_x, SO₂ and metal oxide particles, sinter flue gas also contained significant amount of VOCs whose environmental impact cannot be ignored. Based on our work, it is timely needed to establish a new VOC emission standard for sinter flue gas and develop advanced techniques to simultaneously eliminate multi-pollutants in iron ore sinter process.

Levels, profiles, and emission characteristics of chlorobenzenes in ash samples from some industrial thermal facilities in northern Vietnam

Chlorobenzenes (CBzs) are unintentionally produced organic contaminants from different thermal industrial processes, which have been scarcely surveyed in Asian developing countries including Vietnam. In this study, residue concentrations, profiles, emission factors, and annual emissions of seven chlorobenzene compounds were investigated in fly ash and bottom ash samples of some industrial facilities including brick making plant, steel and zinc production plants, and industrial and municipal waste incinerators in northern Vietnam. Total concentrations of seven CBzs in the ash samples were generally decreased in the order: industrial waste incinerator > municipal waste incinerator > steel-making plant > brick making plant. Emission pattern of CBzs varied considerably among different industrial plants, with 1,2- and 1,3-dichloro-, 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-, and hexachlorobenzene as predominant compounds in the industrial waste incinerators and steel-making plants. Emission factors of CBzs estimated for the fly ash and bottom ash samples were in the range of 118-2020 and 5.3-22,600 μg ton^-1, respectively. Average annual emissions (AEs) of total seven CBzs estimated for fly ash and bottom ash in the investigated plants were in the range of 154-54,300 and 20,160-161,400 mg year^-1, respectively. The AEs of CBzs estimated for fly ash in the steel-making plant were higher than those in the waste incinerators. Meanwhile, CBz emissions for bottom ash were the highest in the steel-making plant, followed by the industrial and municipal waste incinerators. This is among the first studies on the emission characteristics of both low and highly chlorinated benzenes from industrial activities in Vietnam.

Reassessment and update of emission factors for unintentional dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls

One of the major goals of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants is to continuously reduce the releases of unintentional persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDF) or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) from anthropogenic sources. Until now, most efforts have focused on the releases of PCDD/PCDF and to a lesser extent on unintentionally generated PCB, and therefore, release inventories reported as toxic equivalents (TEQ) do not include the twelve dioxin-like PCB (dl-PCB). In order to facilitate the development of national release inventories for the total TEQ - consisting of PCDD, PCDF and PCB - this study collected and summarized published emission factors (EFs) of unintentional dl-PCB or calculated them from measured data for the sources listed in the UNEP Toolkit. In total, 286 EFs for dl-PCB were found (or could be calculated) whereby 233 described release to air, 23 EFs addressed to residue, 25 EFs to product; and only 5 EFs addressed releases to land. Taking into account performance criteria such as the facility type and scale or abatement technologies, the EFs were grouped and assigned to the source categories and/or classes used in the UNEP Toolkit. With these newly added data and EFs of dl-PCB, the already existing EFs in the Toolkit can be improved and amended. In addition, a statistically significant correlation between the EF_Air of dl-PCB proposed in this study and EF_Air of PCDD/PCDF recommended in the Toolkit was observed.

Unintentional production of persistent chlorinated and brominated organic pollutants during iron ore sintering processes

Iron ore sintering (SNT) processes are major sources of unintentionally produced chlorinated persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). However, few studies of emissions of brominated POPs, such as polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), during SNT have been performed. Stack gas and fly ash samples from six typical SNT plants in China were collected and analyzed to determine the concentrations and profiles of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, PCNs, PBDD/Fs, and PBDEs, as well as any correlations among these compounds. The PCDD/F, PCB, PCN, PBDD/F, and PBDE emission factors were 2.47, 0.61, 552, 0.32, and 107μgt^-1, respectively (109, 4.07, 10.4, 4.41 and 0.02ng toxic equivalents t^-1, respectively). PCBs were the most abundant compounds by mass, while PCNs were the next most abundant, contributing 51% and 42% to the total POP concentration, respectively. However, PCDD/Fs were the dominant contributors to the chlorinated and brominated POP toxic equivalent concentrations, contributing 89% to the total toxic equivalent concentration. The PCDD/F and other chlorinated and brominated POP concentrations were positively correlated, indicating that chlorinated and brominated POP emissions could be synergistically decreased using the best available technologies/best environmental practices already developed for PCDD/Fs.

Gas-phase and particle-phase PCDD/F congener distributions in the flue gas from an iron ore sintering plant

The activated carbon injection-circulating fluidized bed (ACI-CFB)-bag filter coupling technique was studied in an iron ore sintering plant. For comparison, the removal efficiencies under the conditions without or with ACI technology were both evaluated. It was found that the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) removal efficiency for total international toxic equivalence quantity (I-TEQ) concentration was improved from 91.61% to 97.36% when ACI was employed, revealing that ACI was very conducive to further controlling the PCDD/F emissions. Detailed congener distributions of PCDD/Fs in the gas-phase and particle-phase of the Inlet and Outlet samples were determined. Additionally, the PCDD/F distribution for the Fly ash-with ACI sample of was also studied.

Synergetic inhibition of PCDD/F formation from pentachlorophenol by mixtures of urea and calcium oxide

Chlorophenols are structurally similar to PCDD/Fs and have been considered as highly potential precursors for PCDD/Fs formation. The suppressing effects of PCDD/F formation from pentachlorophenol (PCP) were investigated on various mass ratios of CaO and urea. The total concentration of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, mostly dominated by OCDD, was determined to be 48.58-10186ng/mg in inhibitor-reaction systems, being much lower than that in blank reaction system (75654ng/mg). Interestingly, compared with pure CaO and urea reaction system, the concentration and TEQ of formed 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs in mixed urea/CaO reaction system were lower, especially with 5-20% urea reaction systems being respectively at decrease by 96.5-99.4% and 99.2-99.7%. The suppression efficiency of TEQ in 5-20% urea reaction systems could be always approximately 100% under 250-350°C. These results suggested that mixed inhibitors, especially 5-20% urea inhibitors, have a synergetic inhibition effect for PCDD/Fs formation from PCP. Mixed inhibitor generated several intermediates, involving CO2, H2O, NH3, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, HNCO, biuret and ammelide. The complex between PCP and Ca, N-doped species, lower chlorinated phenols and benzenediol, and organic acids were also determined. Synergetic inhibition mechanism may be attributed to accelerated facilitation of acid-base reaction and N doping. The decomposition of PCP itself also contributes to prevent PCDD/Fs formation.

Research on persistent organic pollutants in China on a national scale: 10 years after the enforcement of the Stockholm Convention

As a signatory of the Stockholm Convention and the largest developing country, China plays a very important role in implementation of the convention to reduce and finally eliminate persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the world. In the past ten years after the enforcement in 2004, Chinese Government and scientists have made great progress on the study of POPs. The present work aims to provide an overview on recent studies on POPs in China, with particular focus on usage/emission inventory, residue inventory, and pollution status of POPs on national scale. Several legend (old) and new target POPs were comprehensively summarized with progress on inventory. Furthermore, several national scale monitoring programs have been selected for the occurrence, spatial and temporal trends of POPs in China, which are compared with Asian data and Global data. Based on the observed results, some important scientific issues, such as the primary and secondary distribution patterns, the primary and secondary fractionations, and air-soil exchange of POPs, are also discussed. It is proposed that more studies should be carried out for the new targeted POPs in future for both the national and global interests.

Emission of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UPOPs) from municipal waste incinerators in China

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pentachlorobenzene (PeCBz) and hexachlorobenzene (HxCBz), which are listed in the Stockholm Convention, are commonly known as unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UPOPs). As municipal waste incinerators (MWIs) have burgeoned in China, the emission of UPOPs is of great concerns. Compared to the extensive studies of PCDD/Fs emission, not much information of non-dioxin UPOPs (i.e., PCBs, HxCBz, and PeCBz) is available. In the present study, samples from raw gas (RG) after boiler, stack gas (SG) after air pollution control devices (APCDs) and fly ash (FA) samples were collected from typical MWIs in China. The analyses of SG samples indicate that PCDD/Fs are the major contributor to TEQ value, but non-dioxin UPOPs are the dominant compounds in terms of mass concentration. The mean emission factors of dl-PCBs, PeCBz, and HxCBz in SG are 0.372, 144, and 84.7 μg/t, respectively. In contrast with gaseous samples, FA contains higher mass concentration of PCDD/Fs and PCBs than that of PeCBz and HxCBz. In terms of homologues distribution of PCBs, di- to tetra-CBs were the predominant species in both SG and FA samples. PCB-126 is the major contributor to the TEQ concentration. The comparison of UPOPs composition in SG and RG samples shows that activated carbon adsorption process is capable of removing most PCDD/Fs, but less efficient for the removal of non-dioxin UPOPs.

Removal of polychlorinated biphenyls by desulfurization and emissions of polychlorinated biphenyls from sintering plants

The influence of desulfurization on polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from sintering plants was investigated. The concentrations of dioxin-like (dl) PCBs, toxic equivalents (TEQs), indicator PCBs, and total tri- to deca-chlorinated PCB homolog groups (∑PCBs) in the flue gases at the desulfurization system inlets were 290-1906 pg m(-3) (2.4-18.8 pg World Health Organization (WHO) TEQ m(-3)), 420-2885 pg m(-3), and 6496-22,648 pg m(-3), respectively. Desulfurization reduced the values to 43.3-500 pg m(-3) (0.46-9.5 pg WHO-TEQ m(-3)), 183-587 pg m(-3), and 2383-11,639 pg m(-3), respectively. The removed PCBs were adsorbed by gypsum from the flue gas; the PCB concentration distributions at the inlets and outlets and in the gypsum samples were similar. The emission factors were 9.86 ng WHO-TEQ t(-1) for the flue gas and 8.37 ng WHO-TEQ t(-1) for gypsum. Desulfurization decreased the annual atmospheric PCB emissions from 48.6 to 30.7 g WHO-TEQ, and the estimated annual emissions in gypsum were 8.06 g WHO-TEQ. PCBs in the gypsum have not been effectively eliminated and will probably reenter the environment and in turn become a new source of PCB emission. The PCB concentrations in fly ashes from series-connected electrostatic precipitators clearly increased.

Regenerable magnetic octahedral layer catalyst for gaseous UPOPs removal

Hexachlorobenzene (HCBz), pentachlorobenzene (PeCBz), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UPOPs) emitted from waste combustion and industrial processes. In this study, Fe3O4 fabricated manganese oxide octahedral layer (Fe/OL) and Cu-doped OL (Fe/Cu-OL) catalysts were synthesized and they exhibited high activity for catalytic destruction of UPOPs, but also suffered from deactivation. The deactivation of Fe/Cu-OL can be assigned to the formation of surface MnClx species. As for Fe/OL, Mn sites are protected from chlorination by tunnel K(+), and the deactivation is ascribed to the blocking of active sites by KCl crystal. Simple water washing can completely regenerate the spent catalysts due to the dissolution of surface MnClx or KCl. With the advantage of magnetism, catalysts can be easily separated from water. Although Fe/Cu-OL has higher catalytic activity than Fe/OL, it is less stable in water washing due to the collapse of Mn framework structure. Considering the protection role of K(+), the spent Fe/Cu-OL was regenerated by KNO3 solution to induce additional K(+) onto the structure. In this way, the activity can be recovered while the unwanted dissolution of Mn is avoided.

Estimation and characterization of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutant emission from converter steelmaking processes

Unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UP-POPs) including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) were characterized and quantified in stack gas and fly ash from the second ventilation systems in five typical converters in five different steelmaking plants. The 2378-substituted PCDD/Fs (2378-PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like PCB (dl-PCBs) toxic equivalents (TEQs) were 1.84-10.3 pg WHO-TEQ Nm(-3) in the stack gas and 5.59-87.6 pg WHO-TEQ g(-1) in the fly ash, and the PCN TEQs were 0.06-0.56 pg TEQ Nm(-3) in the stack gas and 0.03-0.08 pg TEQ g(-1) in the fly ash. The concentrations of UP-POPs in the present study were generally lower than those in other metallurgical processes, such as electric arc furnaces, iron ore sintering, and secondary metallurgical processes. Adding scrap metal might increase UP-POP emissions, indicating that raw material composition was a key influence on emissions. HxCDF, HpCDF, OCDF, HpCDD, and OCDD were the dominant PCDD/Fs in the stack gas and fly ash. TeCB and PeCB were dominant in the stack gas, but HxCB provided more to the total PCB concentrations in the fly ash. The lower chlorinated PCNs were dominant in all of the samples. The 2378-PCDD/F, dl-PCB, and PCN emission factors in stack gases from the steelmaking converter processes (per ton of steel produced) were 1.88-2.89, 0.14-0.76, and 229-759 μg t(-1), respectively.
