Emerging concern of nano-pollution in agro-ecosystem: Flip side of nanotechnology

Nanomaterials (NMs) have proven to be a game-changer in agriculture, showcasing their potential to boost plant growth and safeguarding crops. The agricultural sector has widely adopted NMs, benefiting from their small size, high surface area, and optical properties to augment crop productivity and provide protection against various stressors. This is attributed to their unique characteristics, contributing to their widespread use in agriculture. Human exposure from various components of agro-environmental sectors (soil, crops) NMs residues are likely to upsurge with exposure paths may stimulates bioaccumulation in food chain. With the aim to achieve sustainability, nanotechnology (NTs) do exhibit its potentials in various domains of agriculture also have its flip side too. In this review article we have opted a fusion approach using bibliometric based analysis of global research trend followed by a holistic assessment of pros and cons i.e. toxicological aspect too. Moreover, we have also tried to analyse the current scenario of policy associated with the application of NMs in agro-environment.

An evaluation of arsenic contamination status and its potential health risk assessment in villages of Nadia and North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India

The present study was conducted to evaluate the arsenic (As) contamination and possible associated health hazards to exposed population in four villages of two districts (Nadia and North 24 Parganas) of West Bengal, India. The study included two villages each from Nadia (Jaguli and Kugacchi) and North 24 Parganas (Chamta and Byaspur) districts. Groundwater, surface water, soil, rice grains and rice-based food samples were collected from these villages. The results revealed the presence of As in high concentrations in groundwater (35.00 to 186.00 µg L-1), surface water (30.00 to 61.00 µg L-1), soil (46.17 to 66.00 mg kg-1), rice grains (0.017 to 1.27 µg g-1) and rice-based food products (0.012 to 0.40 µg g-1). The maximum As levels were recorded in all types of samples collected from Kugacchi village. The rice grain samples included high-yielding and local varieties, and the level of As in high-yielding varieties was found to be higher (0.72 to 1.27 µg g-1) than in local varieties (0.25 to 1.06 µg g-1). The data of As concentrations was used for understanding the hazard quotient (HQ) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) to the As-exposed population, and significant non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were revealed considering consumption of rice grains at 400 g per day. The study demonstrates the severity of As contamination in the surveyed villages, which may pose a hindrance to attainment of sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030 and proposes the implementation of requisite safety measures.

An extensive review of arsenic dynamics and its distribution in soil-aqueous-rice plant systems in south and Southeast Asia with bibliographic and meta-data analysis

Millions of people worldwide are affected by arsenic (As) contamination, particularly in South and Southeast Asian countries, where large-scale dependence on the usage of As-contaminated groundwater in drinking and irrigation is a familiar practice. Rice (Oryza sativa) cultivation is commonly done in South and Southeast Asian countries as a preferable crop which takes up more As than any other cereals. The present article has performed a scientific meta-data analysis and extensive bibliometric analysis to demonstrate the research trend in global rice As contamination scenario in the timeframe of 1980-2023. This study identified that China contributes most with the maximum number of publications followed by India, USA, UK and Bangladesh. The two words 'arsenic' and 'rice' have been identified as the most dominant keywords used by the authors, found through co-occurrence cluster analysis with author keyword association study. The comprehensive perceptive attained about the factors affecting As load in plant tissue and the nature of the micro-environment augment the contamination of rice cultivars in the region. This extensive review analyses soil parameters through meta-data regression assessment that influence and control As dynamics in soil with its further loading into rice grains and presents that As content and OM are inversely related and slightly correlated to the pH increment of the soil. Additionally, irrigation and water management practices have been found as a potential modulator of soil As concentration and bioavailability, presented through a linear fit with 95% confidence interval method.

Evaluation of efficacy of non-coding RNA in abiotic stress management of field crops: Current status and future prospective

Abiotic stresses are responsible for the major losses in crop yield all over the world. Stresses generate harmful ROS which can impair cellular processes in plants. Therefore, plants have evolved antioxidant systems in defence against the stress-induced damages. The frequency of occurrence of abiotic stressors has increased several-fold due to the climate change experienced in recent times and projected for the future. This had particularly aggravated the risk of yield losses and threatened global food security. Non-coding RNAs are the part of eukaryotic genome that does not code for any proteins. However, they have been recently found to have a crucial role in the responses of plants to both abiotic and biotic stresses. There are different types of ncRNAs, for example, miRNAs and lncRNAs, which have the potential to regulate the expression of stress-related genes at the levels of transcription, post-transcription, and translation of proteins. The lncRNAs are also able to impart their epigenetic effects on the target genes through the alteration of the status of histone modification and organization of the chromatins. The current review attempts to deliver a comprehensive account of the role of ncRNAs in the regulation of plants' abiotic stress responses through ROS homeostasis. The potential applications ncRNAs in amelioration of abiotic stresses in field crops also have been evaluated.

Analysis of the vertical distribution of 137Cs and 239,240Pu in waterlogged and non-boggy soils by the sequential extraction method

Mobile capabilities of ¹³⁷Cs, ^239,240Pu and some stable element physicochemical forms were studied in soil layers at a depth of 6-8 cm (maximum concentrations of radionuclides) of non-boggy and waterlogged soil cores sampled on the shores of Lake Bedugnis (Lithuania). Soil samples were acidic with small amount of clay (muscovite). The radionuclide activity concentrations were about 2.5 times higher in non-boggy soil. It was explained by different conditions of deposition of radioactive fallout at these sampling sites and density of the soil samples. The value of the exchangeable fraction of radionuclides is shown to be an indicator of their migration capabilities in the soil. Under anaerobic conditions in waterlogged soil (stagnant pore water conditions) and due to the presence of clay admixture, ∼90% of ¹³⁷Cs was concentrated in the residual fraction and its mobility was low. ^239,240Pu was concentrated mainly in organic matter with rather large exchangeable fractions (∼9.6-∼13.9%). Under oxidizing conditions in non-boggy soil (dynamic pore water conditions in the case of rain), ^239,240Pu was mostly concentrated in the oxide fraction. Its exchangeable fractions were less than those in waterlogged soil and, respectively, its mobility was lower. In non-boggy soils, exchangeable fractions of ¹³⁷Cs were large and varied in the range of 10.1-12.2%, which indicated its high mobility. In the case, ¹³⁷Cs adsorption by clay materials was reduced and its residual fraction did not exceed 71.3%. The obtained data show that in the area of Lake Bedugnis, the migration capabilities of ¹³⁷Cs and ^239,240Pu change in antiphase.

An assessment of various potentially toxic elements and associated health risks in agricultural soil along the middle Gangetic basin, India

The present study analysed the levels of potentially toxic elements along with physico-chemical properties of agricultural soil samples (n = 59) collected from fields situated along the path of river Ganga in the middle Gangetic floodplain in two districts, Ballia and Ghazipur. Arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) levels were analysed by Wavelength Dispersive-X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (WD-XRF) and the associated health risks along with diverse indices were calculated. The mean concentrations of As, Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn and Ni were found to be 15, 42, 85, 18, 87 and 47 mg kg^-1, respectively in Ballia and 13, 31, 73, 22, 77 and 34 mg kg^-1, respectively in Ghazipur. Physico-chemical properties like pH, ORP and organic matter were found to be 7.91, 209 and 1.20, respectively in Ballia and 8.51, 155 and 1.25, respectively in Ghazipur. The calculated health quotient (HQ) for all the elements was observed to be within the threshold value of one, however with few exemptions. Therefore, the present study showcases the contamination of potentially toxic elements in agricultural fields and possible health hazards for people.

Antioxidant enzymes and transporter genes mediate arsenic stress reduction in rice (Oryza sativa L.) upon thiourea supplementation

Thiourea (TU) is a chemo-priming agent and non-physiological reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger whose application has been found to reduce As accumulation in rice grains along with improved growth and yield. The present field study explored TU-mediated mechanistic changes in silicon (Si) assimilation in root/shoot, biochemical and molecular mechanisms of arsenic (As) stress amelioration in rice cultivars. Gosai and Satabdi (IET-4786) rice cultivars were selected for field experiment at three different places; control field and two other As contaminated experimental fields (EF1 and EF2) in West Bengal, India. The average As reduction was observed to be 9.5% and 19.8% whereas the yield increment was 8.8% and 17.7% for gosai and satabdi, respectively among all the three experimental fields. The positive interrelation was also observed between improved internal ultrastructure anatomy and enhanced Si assimilation (36%-423%) upon TU application. The level of photosynthetic pigments was increased by 29.8%-99.2%. Further, activities of antioxidant enzymes were harmonically altered in TU supplemented plants. The expression of various As related transporter genes in flag leaf and developing grains (inflorescence) was changed in both the rice cultivars (gosai and satabdi). It was also presumably responsible for observed As reduction in grains. Thus, TU application was found to be an efficient and sustainable agronomic practice for amelioration of As toxicity in rice plants in As contaminated field conditions.

Enhanced phytoremediation of Metal(loid)s via spiked ZVI nanoparticles: An urban clean-up strategy with ornamental plants

The increasing industrialization and urbanization are also triggering environmental pollution, mostly unnoticed, in the case of soil pollution due to uncontrolled contamination by toxic elemental dispersion. The present study focused on this aspect and studied the clean-up of urban soil in a low-cost and eco-friendly way to restrict arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) contamination. Four potential ornamental plants, Catharanthus roseus (vinca), Cosmos bipinnatus (cosmos), Gomphrena globose (globosa) and Impatiens balsamina (balsamina) were used along with zero valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticles (Fe NPs) for remediation of the soil spiked with As (70 mg kg-1), Pb (600 mg kg-1) and Hg (15 mg kg-1) in a 60 d pot experiment. All plants were divided into four groups viz. control, spiked, spiked+20 mg kg-1 ZVI NP and spiked+50 mg kg-1 ZVI NP. FTIR and SEM were used for ZVI NP characterization. Soil and plant analyses and elemental assessments were done using ICP-MS, XRF and SEM. Among the four plants, cosmos showed the maximum accumulation of toxic elements (41.24 ± 0.022 mg kg-1 As, 139.15 ± 11.2 mg kg-1 Pb and 15.57 ± 0.27 mg kg-1 Hg) at 60 d. The application of ZVI NP at 20 mg kg-1 dosage was found to further augment plants' potential for metal(loid)s accumulation without negatively hampering their growth. Cosmos were observed to reduce soil As from 81.35 ± 1.34 mg kg-1 to 28.16 ± 1.38 mg kg-1 (65.38%), Pb from 1132.47 ± 4.66 to 516.09 ± 3.15 mg kg-1 (54.42%) and Hg from 17.35 ± 0.88 to 6.65 ± 0.4 mg kg-1 (61.67%) at 60 d in spiked + 20 mg kg-1 ZVI NP treatment. Balsamina was the most sensitive plant and showed the least metal(loid)s accumulation. In conclusion, three of these plants are potent enough to use together for a better and enhanced removal of toxic elements from the contaminated soil with cosmos to be the best amongst these in urban areas.

Spatial distribution, risk assessment, and source identification of pollutants around gold tailings ponds: a case study in Pinggu District, Beijing, China

This work investigated heavy metal and cyanide pollution in surface soils and edible plants around Yanzhuang gold tailings ponds in the region of Yanzhuang Village in Pinggu District, Beijing. Surface soil samples were collected from 33 sites around gold tailings ponds, and concentrations of seven heavy metals (i.e., Sb, As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Hg) and cyanide were analyzed to determine their spatial distributions, pollution degrees, and sources. The potential ecological risks of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Hg were preliminarily assessed. The results showed that the mean cyanide, Sb, As, Cd, Cu, and Pb concentrations were higher than the standard values. The pollutant concentrations around the tailings ponds were high and decreased with increasing distance from the ponds. The single pollution index indicated that cyanide, As, and Cd were the main pollutants. The Nemerow pollution index revealed a large region and serious degree of heavy metal pollution in soils. The potential ecological risk level of the study area was moderate, with Cd and As posing the main risks. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that the heavy metal and cyanide pollution present mainly derived from gold tailings, with agricultural pollution also had a certain effect. However, the 12 edible plants sampled were basically not polluted.

Arsenic dynamics and flux assessment under drying-wetting irrigation and enhanced microbial diversity in paddy soils: A four year study in Bengal delta plain

Arsenic (As) assessment in agricultural soils and corresponding crops is necessary from the global health safety perspective. To the best of our knowledge, we are reporting for the first time, As flux determining parametric equations for paddy field with seasonal rice cultivation under conventional flooding and dry-wet irrigation approaches. Rigorous field experiments and measuring quantitative parameters, flushed out or percolated into the deeper soil As flux was assessed. A wintery (boro)-monsoonal (aman) study from 2016 to 2019 has been conducted showing the efficiency of dry-wet irrigation on reduction of soil As bioavailability. The reduction in boro was 52.4% in 2016 to 64.8% in 2019 while in aman, it was 61% in 2016 to 74.9% in 2019. Low bioavailability was correlated to plant's internal vascular structure that was found more rigid and firm in dry-wet field grown plants. Observed soil physico-chemical parameters clearly influenced As bioavailability as well as soil microbial community. Assessment of microbial diversity using metagenomics under altered water regime was done by population analysis, relative abundance, species richness, Krona chart comparison. Dry-wet field was found to be more diverse and enriched in microbial community than that of the flooded soil indicating an affective reduction of As bioavailability under biotic-abiotic factors.

Thiourea supplementation mediated reduction of grain arsenic in rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars: A two year field study

The present study delineates the interactions of arsenic (As), a carcinogenic metalloid, and thiourea (TU), a non-physiological reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger, in rice plants grown in As contaminated fields in West Bengal, India. The study was performed for four consecutive seasons (two boro and two aman) in 2016 and 2017 with two local rice cultivars; Gosai and Satabdi (IET-4786) in a control and two As contaminated experimental fields. Thiourea (0.05% wt/vol) treatment was given in the form of seed priming and foliar spray. Thiourea significantly improved growth and yield of rice plants and reduced As concentration in root, shoot, husk and grains in both cultivars and fields. The reduction in As concentration ranged from 10.3% to 27.5% in four seasons in different fields. The average (four seasons) increase in yield was recorded about ~8.1% and ~11.5% in control, ~20.2% and ~18.6% in experimental field 1, and ~16.2% and ~24.1% in experimental field 2, for gosai and satabdi, respectively. Mean hazard quotient (HQ) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values of As reduced upon TU supplementation for both cultivars as compared to that of non-TU plants. Hence, TU can be effectively used to cultivate rice safely in As contaminated fields.

Evaluation of heavy metal pollution in the Zayandeh-Rud River as the only permanent river in the central plateau of Iran

Zayandeh-Rud River is the only permanent river in the central plateau of Iran. This river has been subject to an extensive discharge of wastewater and effluents from several point and nonpoint pollution sources. Accordingly, sediment quality of Zayandeh-Rud River in Varzaneh region, were studied. Algae and the sediment were sampled through 3 replications at 6 stations in the downstream after crossing through the Isfahan city and reaching Gavkhuni international wetland. Chlorophyll content and As, Pb, and Cd concentrations were measured in each sample Cladophora sp. and Oscillatoria sp. were identified using standard identification keys. The mean concentrations of metals in all stations exceeded background levels. Mean concentration of arsenic (162.9 mg/kg) in the sediment is about 31 times more than the ISQG standard (5.9 mg/kg) and considerably higher than the similar studies in Iran and other regions of the world. The mean concentration of As in algae samples is higher than the most polluted areas of the world. The mean concentration of Pb in the sediment (19.69 mg/kg) is lower than the ISQGs standard (35 mg/kg) and most of the studied river in north of Iran such as Chalous, Baboul-Rud, Gorgan-Rud (North), Khiav (North West), and Anzali wetland. The mean concentration of Cd in the sediment (2.11 mg/kg) is significantly higher than ISQG standard (0.6 mg/kg and some north highly polluted wetlands of Iran such as Anzali. There is a significant positive correlation between the mean concentrations of As and Pb in the sediment and Cladophora sp. tissue, and a negative one between the mean concentration of Pb in the sediment and chlorophyll b/a. There are significant negative correlations between the mean concentration of As in the sediment and chlorophyll a, and the total chlorophyll concentration in Oscillatoria sp. The results of Muller index indicate that the concentrations of Pb, Cd, and As in all stations occur in the Unpolluted, Moderate/Heavy, and Heavy/Extreme groups, respectively. Degree of contamination and modified degree of contamination show very high degree of pollution in the studied area. RI in all the stations showed very high ecological risk. The bioaccumulation factor for all metals in both algae is less than one. So, these two species may not be described as heavy metal accumulators. This study is an alarm for the Zayandeh-Rud River as the most important freshwater source for the Iranian Plateau. Graphical abstract.

Arsenic mitigation in rice grain loading via alternative irrigation by proposed water management practices

Over the past three decades, the occurrence of high concentrations of arsenic (As) in drinking-water and its subsequent poisoning in rice has been recognized as a major public-health concern globally, especially in Ganga Delta Plain with more than 80 million peoples in serious As exposure far beyond than its allowable limit. An extensive field study was conducted for consecutive four years viz. 2013 to 2016, introducing a process of intermittent irrigation pattern comparing to the conventional practice of rice cultivation in India. The practice provides a combination of aerobic and anaerobic irrigation resulting better rice productivity with lesser arsenic mobility and accumulation in rice grains. This present research finding clearly points out to the marked reduction of arsenic load from average 1.6 mg/kg to 0.5 mg/kg in rice grain, much closer to FAO/WHO prescribed safe limit and in the continuous practice of proposed agricultural strategy resulting in a gradual decrease of 15% bioavailable arsenic in each year. Total productivity (in kg/hectare) also increased by 540 kg/year in boro and 340 kg/year in amon subsequently achieving the prescribed safe limit of As in grain.

An assessment of arsenic hazard in groundwater-soil-rice system in two villages of Nadia district, West Bengal, India

The present study measured arsenic (As) concentrations in soil, groundwater and rice grain samples in two villages, Sarapur and Chinili, under Chakdaha block, Nadia district, West Bengal, India. This study also included a survey of the two villages to understand the knowledge among villagers about the As problem. Soil and groundwater samples were collected from fields in two villages while rice grain samples were collected from villagers' houses. The results revealed the presence of As in higher concentrations than the maximum permissible limit of As in drinking water (10 µg L^-1 and 50 µg L^-1 by WHO and Indian standard, respectively) in groundwater [124.50 ± 1.11 µg L^-1 (Sarapur) and 138.20 ± 1.34 µg L^-1 (Chinili)]. The level of As in soil was found to range from 47.7 ± 0.14 to 49.3 ± 0.19 mg Kg^-1 in Sarapur and from 57.5 ± 0.25 to 62.5 ± 0.44 mg Kg^-1 in Chinili which are also higher than European Union maximum acceptable limit in agricultural soil (i.e. 20 mg Kg^-1). The analysis of As in rice grains of five varieties, collected from residents of two villages, showed the presence of higher than recommended safe level of As in rice by FAO/WHO (0.2 mg Kg^-1). The As concentration order was Gosai (0.95 ± 0.044 mg kg^-1), Satabdi (0.79 ± 0.038 mg kg^-1), Banskathi (0.60 ± 0.026 mg kg^-1), Kunti (0.47 ± 0.018 mg kg^-1) and Ranjit (0.29 ± 0.021 mg kg^-1). Importantly, Gosai and Satabdi were the most popular varieties being consumed by local people. The data of consumption of rice per day in the survey was used for the measurement of average daily dose and hazard quotient. It was seen that the As hazard was negatively correlated to the age of residents. Therefore, children and toddlers were at higher risk of As exposure than elderly people. In addition, people with skin related As toxicity symptoms were also cited in the two villages. The study emphasized the severity of As problem in remote areas of West Bengal, India where people consume As tainted rice due to lack of awareness about the As problem and associated health issues.

Ultra-structure alteration via enhanced silicon uptake in arsenic stressed rice cultivars under intermittent irrigation practices in Bengal delta basin

The study implements a periodical intermittent water cycle during rice cultivation providing insight potential in minimizing soil bio-available arsenic. Soil As concentrations were 34 ± 0.49 and 72.03 ± 0.54 mg kg-1 As respectively in two selected fields with rice cultivars gosai and satabdi, in comparison to 42.26 ± 0.37 and 83.69 ± 0.48 mg kg-1 in continuously flooded field soil, determined through ICP-MS. The study found higher translocation of silicon from soil to rice plant parts under intermittent irrigation having pH range of 7.6-9.4 and greater availability of soil organic content that in turn release more labile silicon from soil to aqueous phase for plant accumulation. This increased uptake of silicon strengthens rice shoots, nodes and leaf xylem-phloem integrity compared to conventional continuously flooded rice cultivation approach, suppressing the arsenic translocation, as observed under FE-SEM real-time imaging. Fresh plants were analysed for bioaccumulation and translocation factors of arsenic and silicon to justify the enhanced silicon uptake under proposed practice. Plant stress regulator enzymes viz. malondialdehyde (MDA), total protein, superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) from both conditions and found to be better in intermittent method over conventional practice with higher productivity.

Phytomanagement of trace metals in mangrove sediments of Hormozgan, Iran, using gray mangrove (Avicennia marina)

Trace elements (Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) in root and leaf tissues of the gray mangrove (Avicennia marina) and in corresponding sediment samples were studied. Samples were taken from the inflow/outflow points in two distinct habitats, i.e., the Hara Protected Area and the Azini Bay, of Hormozgan Province in south Iran. Heavy metal concentrations (μg g^-1 of dry weight) in the sediments of the Hara Protected Area ranged from 16.0 to 68.0 for Pb, 15.0 to 52.0 for Zn, 9.0 to 27.0 for Cu, and 1.0 to 3.3 for Cd. In the Azini Bay, these concentrations ranged from 7.1 to 27.5 for Pb, 17.1 to 55.9 for Zn, 12.1 to 37.9 for Cu, and 0.2 to 2.3 for Cd. The accumulation trend of heavy metal concentrations in the roots of A. marina was in the order Pb (16.1) > Zn (15.8) > Cu (9.3) > Cd (1.3) μg g^-1 of dry weight in the Hara Protected Area and in the order Zn (13.7) > Cu (9.4) > Pb (5.5) > Cd (0.6) μg g^-1 of dry weight in the Azini Bay. The value of translocation factor (TLF) was smaller than 1 in both regions. It was estimated from 0.44 to 0.62 in the Hara Protected Area and from 0.51 to 1.01 in the Azini Bay. The enrichment coefficient for root (ECR) varied from 0.32 to 0.93 in the Hara Protected Area and from 0.32 to 0.51 in the Azini Bay. The ratio of heavy metals in leaves/sediments (ECL) also varied from 0.01 to 0.67 in the Hara Protected Area and from 0.01 to 0.47 in the Azini Bay. The enrichment coefficient for leaf (ECL) was always lower than ECR in both regions. Based on the above findings, A. marina can be regarded as an excluder for the heavy metals examined in this study, given its low efficiency in translocating and accumulating the heavy metals in the shoots. Apart from serving as a baseline for the study area, findings could be useful for mitigating heavy metal contamination in these sensitive ecosystems through possible phytomanagement using gray mangrove.

Vermiremediation of metal(loid)s via Eichornia crassipes phytomass extraction: A sustainable technique for plant amelioration

Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), imparts deficiency of soluble arsenic and other toxic metal (loid)s through rhizofiltration and phytoaccumulation. Without proper management strategy, this phytoremediation of metal (loid)s might fail and get reverted back to the environment, contaminating the nearby water bodies. This study, focused on bio-conversion of phytoremediating hyacinths, spiked with 100 times and greater arsenic, lead and cadmium concentrations than the average water contamination, ranging in 58.81 ± 0.394, 16.74 ± 0.367, 12.18 ± 0.153 mg Kg^-1arsenic, 18.95 ± 0.212, 9.53 ± 0.054, 6.83 ± 0.306 mg kg^-1 lead and 2.79 ± 0.033, 1.39 ± 0.025, 0.92 ± 0.045 mg kg^-1 cadmium, respectively in root, shoot and leaves, proving it's phytoaccumulation capacity. Next, these hyacinths has been used as a source of organic supplement for preparing vermicompost using Eisenia fetida following analysis of total metal content and sequential extraction. Control soil was having 134.69 ± 2.47 mg kg^-1 arsenic in compare to 44.6 ± 0.91 mg kg^-1 at premature stage of compost to 23.9 ± 1.55 mg kg^-1 at mature compost indicating sustainable fate of phytoremediated vermicompost. This vermiremediation of arsenic and other toxic elements, restricted the bioavailability of soil pollutants. Furthermore, processed compost amended as organic fertilizer, growing chickpea, coriander, tomato and chilli plant, resulted in negligible metal(loid)s in treated samples, enhancing also plant's growth and production.

Effects of ferrous sulfate amendment and water management on rice growth and metal(loid) accumulation in arsenic and lead co-contaminated soil

Arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) commonly co-exist with high concentrations in paddy soil mainly due to human activities in south of China. This study investigates the effect of ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄) amendment and water management on rice growth and arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) accumulation in rice plants. A paddy soil co-contaminated with As and Pb was chosen for the pot experiment with three FeSO₄ levels (0, 0.25, and 1%, on a dry weight basis) and two water managements (flooded, non-flooded). The concentrations of As and Pb in iron plaques and rice plants were determined. Application of FeSO₄ and non-flooded conditions significantly accelerated the growth of rice plants. With the addition of FeSO₄, iron plaques were significantly promoted and most of the As and Pb were sequestered in the iron plaques. The addition of 0.25% FeSO₄ and non-flooded conditions did not significantly change the accumulation of As and Pb in rice grains. The practice also significantly decreased the translocation factor (TF) of As and Pb from roots to above-ground parts which might have been aided by the reduction of As and Pb availability in soil, the preventing effect of rice roots, and the formation of more reduced glutathione (GSH). Flooded conditions decreased the Pb concentration in rice plants, but increased As accumulation. Moreover, rice grew thin and weak and even died under flooded conditions. Overall, an appropriate FeSO₄ dose and non-flooded conditions might be feasible for rice cultivation, especially addressing the As issue in the co-contaminated soil. However, further detailed studies to decrease the accumulation of Pb in edible parts and the field application in As and Pb co-contaminated soil are recommended.

Effect of water cadmium concentration and water level on the growth performance of Salix triandroides cuttings

The growth performance of Salix triandroides cuttings at three water cadmium (Cd) concentrations (0, 20, and 40 mg L^-1) and three water levels (- 40 cm, water level 40 cm below the soil surface; 0 cm, water level even with the soil surface; and 40 cm, water level 40 cm above soil surface) was investigated to evaluate its potential in phytoextraction strategies. Compared to cuttings in the - 40 or 0 cm water levels, cuttings in the 40 cm water level showed significantly lower biomass, height, and adventitious root length and significantly fewer leaves and adventitious roots. However, these growth and morphological parameters were not different among the three water Cd concentrations. Water level decreased stomatal conduction and transpiration rate but showed no significant effects on chlorophyll concentration or photosynthetic rate. Chlorophyll concentration and stomatal conductance were higher at 40 mg L^-1 Cd treatment than at 0 or 20 mg L^-1 Cd treatment; yet, photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate were not different. Cd concentration in the leaves and stems increased as the water level increased, but the highest Cd concentration in the roots occurred in the 0 cm water level. As water Cd concentration increased, Cd concentration in the leaves, stems, and roots increased in all three water levels, except in stems in the - 40 cm water level. Under Cd stress, cuttings in the - 40 or 0 cm water levels were characterized by a higher bioaccumulation coefficient, but a lower translocation factor, than those in the 40 cm water level. However, the bioaccumulation coefficient increased with increasing water Cd concentration in all three water levels, as did the translocation factor in the 40 cm water level. The tolerance index for the cuttings was the same among all water levels and water Cd concentrations. The results clearly indicated that the low water level increased plant growth and Cd accumulation in underground parts, while the high water level decreased plant growth but increased Cd accumulation in aboveground parts.
