Human health risk assessment of DDTs and HCHs through dietary exposure in Nanjing, China

Pesticide residues and risk assessment of trunk-injected pesticides in pine nut (Pinus koraiensis) seeds

Pine nuts, the edible seeds of pines (Family: Pinaceae, Pinus spp.), are popular worldwide, particularly those from the Korean pine tree (Pinus koraiensis), which is economically significant and widely exported. The spread of pine wilt disease (PWD) caused by pinewood nematodes (PWNs) has necessitated the use of trunk injections of pesticides in Korea, raising concerns about pesticide residues in edible pine nuts. This study investigated the concentration of pesticide residues in pine nuts from trunk-injected trees and assessed their potential health risks to consumers. After Korean pine tree was trunk-injected with pesticide, the pine nuts were subsequently harvested and analyzed for pesticide residues using LC‒MS/MS. Short- and long-term risk assessments of trunk-injected pesticides in pine nuts were conducted. Abamectin and emamectin benzoate were not detected, while acetamiprid and sulfoxaflor were detected, but their levels were below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by Korea, the EU, and the US. The short-term and long-term risk assessments indicated negligible health risks for consumers from these residues. Despite the low risk, we recommend continued monitoring of pesticide residues in pine nuts intended for sale to ensure consumer safety.

A nationwide characterization of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in livestock and poultry food products across China: Residual levels, origin and the associated health risks

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are still occurring in various foodstuffs after the ban on their use. However, it remains unclear concerning the contamination source of OCPs in livestock and poultry food products and associated health risks. To fill this gap, we characterized the residual levels of 19 OCPs in multiple types of meats and eggs, which were sampled across China within the same period. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were dominant in eggs, with the mean levels being 0.76 and 2.03 μg/kg for chicken eggs and duck eggs, respectively. By contrast, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) were the top one OCP in beef and lamb, with its mean levels being 0.51 and 0.65 μg/kg, respectively. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was rather detected in the poultry products. The componential ratio analysis implicated recent inputs of several banned OCPs including technical HCH and DDT, HCB and aldrin in multiple regions, which may origin from local industrial activities or possible illegal use. Risk assessment based on the risk quotient method suggested that daily consumption of cooked meats and eggs contaminated by dieldrin may pose a carcinogenic risk in adult residents of Jiangsu province. We concluded that OCPs remain present in meats and eggs at levels of health concern regionally in China.

Grain transportation and consumption reshapes the α-HCH exposure picture of China

Socio-economic activities like food trade can increase the uncertainty of human risk of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). We compared the change in model predicted α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH) cancer risk (CR) with and without grain trade in mainland China. In scenario without grain logistics, α-HCH moved fast away from southern and southeastern China via northward atmospheric transport. However, the grain logistics from northeastern China delivers the α-HCH previously accumulated in northeastern sink back to densely populated areas in recent years, which enhance CR by >50 % in the southern seaboard of China. The northward movement of grain production center and recent grain deficiency in southern provinces induced by dietary pattern changes is identified as the major driving factors of the reversed transport of α-HCH. The finding highlights the potential of socio-economic activities that can otherwise offset the risk reduction effect of the geochemical cycle of POPs.

Exploring chitin: novel pathways and structures as promising targets for biopesticides

Chitin, the most prevalent polymer in nature, a significant structural polysaccharide that comes in second only to cellulose. Chitin is a crucial component of fungal cell walls and also present in many other creatures, such as viruses, plants, animals, insect exoskeletons, and crustacean shells. Chitin presents itself as a promising target for the development of biopesticides. It focuses on unraveling the unique structures and biochemical pathways associated with chitin, aiming to identify vulnerabilities that can be strategically leveraged for effective and environmentally sustainable pest control. It involves a comprehensive analysis of chitinase enzymes, chitin biosynthesis, and chitin-related processes across diverse organisms. By elucidating the molecular intricacies involved in chitin metabolism, this review seeks to unveil potential points of intervention that can disrupt essential biological processes in target pests without harming non-target species. This holistic approach to understanding chitin-related pathways aims to inform the design and optimization of biopesticides with enhanced specificity and reduced ecological impact. The outcomes of this study hold great promise for advancing innovative and eco-friendly pest management strategies. By targeting chitin structures and pathways, biopesticides developed based on these findings may offer a sustainable and selective alternative to conventional chemical pesticides, contributing to the ongoing efforts towards more environmentally conscious and effective pest control solutions.

Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Milk and Dairy Products in Croatia: A Health Risk Assessment

The aim of this study was to evaluate contamination levels and the frequency of detection of organochlorine (OCPs) and organophosphate pesticides (OPPs), pyrethroids, carbamates and polychlorinated biphenyls (seven PCB congeners) in a total of 534 samples of cow's, sheep's and goat's milk and dairy products from Croatia. Concentrations above the limit of quantification (LOQ) were measured for fourteen OCPs, nine OPPs, six pyrethroids, one carbamate and PCBs with a total of 172 results, and no concentrations exceeded the maximal residue levels defined by the European Union. The mean concentrations of pesticides and the sum of seven PCBs were determined in the ranges 0.92-17.4 μg/kg and 1.38-2.74 μg/kg. Pesticides were quantified in 27% of samples, and seven PCBs were quantified in 5.23% of samples. Among the three pesticide groups, the highest numbers of quantified results were found for OCPs (12.1-20.8%). The highest frequencies of detection were found for the sum of 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its isomers (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene and seven PCBs. The sum of seven PCBs was quantified within the range of 3.3-6.67% of samples per milk type and dairy products. Among the OPPs, the highest frequency of detection was found for chlorpyrifos in cow's milk. Based on the estimated daily intakes, chronic risk characterisation showed no risk for adults or ten-year-old children for the consumption of cow's milk and dairy products.

Review of the Terminology, Approaches, and Formulations Used in the Guidelines on Quantitative Risk Assessment of Chemical Hazards in Food

This paper reviews the published terminology, mathematical models, and the possible approaches used to characterise the risk of foodborne chemical hazards, particularly pesticides, metals, mycotoxins, acrylamide, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results confirmed the wide variability of the nomenclature used, e.g., 28 different ways of referencing exposure, 13 of cancer risk, or 9 of slope factor. On the other hand, a total of 16 equations were identified to formulate all the risk characterisation parameters of interest. Therefore, the present study proposes a terminology and formulation for some risk characterisation parameters based on the guidelines of international organisations and the literature review. The mathematical model used for non-genotoxic hazards is a ratio in all cases. However, the authors used the probability of cancer or different ratios, such as the margin of exposure (MOE) for genotoxic hazards. For each effect studied per hazard, the non-genotoxic effect was mostly studied in pesticides (79.73%), the genotoxic effect was mostly studied in PAHs (71.15%), and both effects were mainly studied in metals (59.4%). The authors of the works reviewed generally opted for a deterministic approach, although most of those who assessed the risk for mycotoxins or the ratio and risk for acrylamide used the probabilistic approach.

Distribution of Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Food of Animal Origin in Croatia

Pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental pollutants. When entering the food chain, they can represent a public health problem due to their negative effects on health. In this study, concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), organophosphate pesticides (OPPs), pyrethroids, carbamates, and PCBs-a total 73 compounds-were determined in a total of 2268 samples of fat tissues (beef, pork, sheep, goat, poultry, game, horse, rabbit) and processed fat, meat, and processed meat products collected in Croatia during an 8-year period. In fatty tissues, 787 results exceeded the limits of quantification (LOQ): 16 OCPs, eight OPPs, six pyrethroids, one carbamate, and seven PCBs. The most positive results in fat samples were found for OCPs, with a frequency of quantification in the range of 57.5-87.5%. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) were quantified in the highest percentages, in the ranges of 5.5-66.7% and 5.4-55.8%. Concentrations above the MRL values were determined for chlorpyrifos in pork fat and for resmethrin in six fat samples and one pâté. In 984 samples of meat and meat products, only 62 results exceeded the LOQ values. The highest frequency of quantification was determined for OCPs (25 samples), of which 40% were DDT isomers (60% DDE). Frequency quantifications of PCBs in fat samples were between 7.23 and 36.7%. An evaluation of the health risk assessment showed that the consumption of fat, meat, and meat products does not pose a threat to consumer health, since all EDI values were well below the respective toxicological reference values.

Circulating organochlorine pesticide levels, genetic predisposition and the risk of incident type 2 diabetes

Persistent organochlorine pesticide (OCP) has been associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and genetic polymorphism might modify such an association. However, prospective evidence remains scarce. We conducted a nested case-control study comprising 1006 incident diabetic cases and 1006 matched non-diabetic controls [sex and age (±5 years)] from 2008 to 2013 (mean follow-up period: ∼4.6 years) based on the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort in Shiyan City of China, determined baseline levels of nineteen OCPs, and examined the associations of circulating OCPs, both individually and collectively, with incident T2D risk. We also constructed overall genetic risk score (GRS) based on 161 T2D-associated variants and five pathway-specific cluster GRSs based on established variants derived from the Asian population. Compared with the first quartile of serum β-BHC levels, the multivariable-adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of incident T2D risk in the second, third, and fourth quartiles were 0.98 (0.70-1.39), 1.43 (0.99-2.07), and 1.75 (1.14-2.68), respectively (FDR-adjusted Ptrend = 0.03). A positive association was observed between serum OCP mixture and incident T2D risk and can be largely attributed to β-BHC. Furthermore, serum β-BHC and p,p'-DDE showed significant interactions with the GRS for lipodystrophy, a T2D-related pathway representing fat redistribution to viscera, on T2D risk (Pinteraction < 0.05). In conclusion, higher circulating OCP levels were independently associated with an increased risk of T2D, with β-BHC possibly being the major contributor. Genetic predisposition to T2D-related morbidity, such as visceral adiposity, should be considered when assessing the risk of T2D conferred by OCPs.

Spatial distribution and seasonal variation of pesticide residues in the sediment, seawater, and edible seaweeds: Environmental and human health risk assessment

This study evaluates the distribution of pesticide residues (PRs) and assesses the ecological and human health risks posed by them from seawater, sediment and edible seaweeds in the Gulf of Mannar. Results showed that hexachlorocyclohexane, heptachlor, aldrin, endrin and endosulfan were the predominant PRs. The maximum concentration of PRs was observed in the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Their concentrations in sediment exceeded interim sediment quality guidelines, indicating significant risks to benthic organisms. Except for endrin, the presence of other organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) was below the maximum residual limit. Human health risk assessment revealed that the estimated daily intake of PRs through seaweeds was below the acceptable daily intake. The hazard quotient and hazard ratio were <1, implying that the study seaweeds do not pose significant health risks. The presence of endrin in edible seaweeds, however, indicates safety concerns for consumers and the continued use of banned OCPs in agriculture.

Pesticide pestilence: Global scenario and recent advances in detection and degradation methods

Increased anthropogenic activities are confronted as the main cause for rising environmental and health concerns globally, presenting an indisputable threat to both environment and human well-being. Modern-day industrialization has given rise to a cascade of concurrent environmental and health challenges. The global human population is growing at an alarming rate, posing tremendous pressure on future food security, and healthy and environmentally sustainable diets for all. To feed all, the global food production needs to increase by 50% by 2050, but this increase has to occur from the limited arable land, and under the present-day climate variabilities. Pesticides have become an integral component of contemporary agricultural system, safeguarding crops from pests and diseases and their use must be reduce to fulfill the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) agenda . However, their indiscriminate use, lengthy half-lives, and high persistence in soil and aquatic ecosystems have impacted global sustainability, overshot the planetary boundaries and damaged the pure sources of life with severe and negative impacts on environmental and human health. Here in this review, we have provided an overview of the background of pesticide use and pollution status and action strategies of top pesticide-using nations. Additionally, we have summarized biosensor-based methodologies for the rapid detection of pesticide residue. Finally, omics-based approaches and their role in pesticide mitigation and sustainable development have been discussed qualitatively. The main aim of this review is to provide the scientific facts for pesticide management and application and to provide a clean, green, and sustainable environment for future generations.

Residues of carcinogenic pesticides in food: a systematic review

Most agricultural products are exposed to pesticides. Organochlorine (OCPs) insecticides have been banned for years due to their persistence in the environment and lipophilic properties. On the other hand, some carcinogenic organophosphates are used in high amounts. Therefore, this systematic review was performed with the keywords; pesticide, carcinogenic, carcinogen, residue, contamination, pollution, and food to determine the type of food and pesticide. 663 manuscripts were found by searching in databases. After initial screening and quality assessment of full text, 26 manuscripts were selected. In this study, by reviewing selected manuscripts, about 13 pesticides were associated with carcinogenic effects. These pesticides were Chlorothalonil, Glyphosate, Tetrachlorvinphos, Parathion, Malathion, Diazinon, heptachlor, Hexachlorobenzene, aldrin, dieldrin, DDT, chlordane, Lindane. Most of these pesticides were organochlorine. The organochlorine pesticides are primarily detected in foods of animal origin. In some studies, the amount of carcinogenic organochlorine was higher than the permissible levels. From the carcinogenic herbicide, Glyphosate. An important finding of this systematic review is that carcinogenic organochlorines are still a threat to cancer incidence.

Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in raw bovine milk from various dairy farms in Beja, Tunisia: contamination status, dietary intake, and health risk assessment for the consumers

We determined organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in raw bovine milk taken directly from the milking equipment for different animals and various farms in Béja region, which is one of the largest milk producing areas in Tunisia. All milk samples were contaminated with one or more pesticides and exhibited measurable concentrations of some PCB congeners. The residue levels are generally marked by the predominance of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) (median: 17.60 ng g^-1 fat), followed by hexachlorobenzene (HCB) (median: 14.31 ng g^-1 fat), PCBs (median: 4.71 ng g^-1 fat), and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) (median: 0.77 ng g^-1 fat). DDT/DDE ratios across the samples vary between 0.09 to 32.24 and exhibit the hypothesis of sustaining illegal use of the banned pesticide. The historical or recent use of OCPs and possible emission sources of PCBs identified near studied farms may lead to increased levels of these contaminants in produced milk. The estimated daily intake (EDI) values were several orders of magnitude below the tolerable daily intake (TDI) fixed by FAO/WHO, though recorded concentration in some samples exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs) fixed by the EU, especially for OCPs. According to health risk assessments, consumption of raw milk did not pose an obvious cancer risk or other health problems for local inhabitants.

Typical organic contaminants in hair of adult residents between inland and coastal capital cities in China: Differences in levels and composition profiles, and potential impact factors

The growing of urbanization, industrialization, and agricultural production have resulted in the increasing contamination of typical organic contaminants (OCs) in China. However, data on differences in exposure characteristics of typical OCs between the coastal and inland cities among residents in China are limited. In this study, hair samples were collected from adult residents in 10 and 17 provincial capital cities in coastal and inland China, respectively, to investigate the differences in the levels and composition profiles of typical OCs. The potential factors impacting the human exposure to OCs were also examined based on the relationship among the hair OC levels and the population characteristics and statistical indicators. The median concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane's (DDTs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) in hair of coastal urban residents were 3.64, 5.58, and 268 ng/g, respectively, while their concentrations in samples from inland urban residents were 1.84, 3.85, and 202 ng/g, respectively. Coastal residents showed significantly higher hair OC concentrations than inland residents (p < 0.05). BDE209 and p,p'-DDE were the predominant chemicals for PBDEs and DDTs, respectively, in both coastal and inland cities. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) was the dominant PFR in coastal residents' hair, while triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) was the major PFR in inland residents' hair, possibly owing to the different usages of the PFRs. Significant gender differences were observed in the levels and composition profiles of OCs (p < 0.05). The levels of p,p'-DDE and TCIPP were significantly related to the gross domestic product (GDP), gross secondary industry product, and the per capita consumption of aquatic products (p < 0.05). This study provides scientific data for evaluating human exposure to OCs in urban residents at a large scale and its associations with statistical indicators including urbanization, industrialization, agricultural production, and diet in China.

Residual levels and dietary exposure risk assessment of banned pesticides in fruits and vegetables from Chinese market based on long-term nontargeted screening by HPLC-Q-TOF/MS

The negative impact of banned pesticides is of special importance for their high toxicity. In this study, nationwide screening of banned pesticides in 37462 fruit and vegetable samples was carried out from 2012 to 2018 using a self-developed HPLC-Q-TOF/MS technique. The dietary exposure risks associated with the banned pesticides were assessed. The results showed that 66.62 % of the samples were detected at least one pesticide. Among the pesticide-positive samples, a total of 18 banned pesticides were detected in 1798 samples for 1896 times. The risk assessment revealed that 11.71 % of the positive detections exceeded the safety limits and posed an unacceptable risk, while 37.29 % of the positive detections posed acceptable risks. According to the screening and assessment results, two national maps were presented to show the total detection ratios of the banned pesticides and the unacceptable risks of dietary exposure. It should be noted that omethoate had higher residual concentration, unacceptable risk frequency and unacceptable risk proportion. This is the first nationwide comprehensive report on screening and risk assessment banned pesticides.

Cumulative Risk Assessment of Dietary Exposure to Pesticide Residues in Brown Rice (Oryza sativa L.) from the Three Main Rice-Growing Regions in China during 2016–2020

The residual levels of 25 monitored pesticides in 6,229 brown rice samples obtained from the 17 provinces of the three main rice-growing regions in China during 2016–2020 were analyzed, and the cumulative risks of chronic and acute exposure to pesticides for the Chinese population were assessed. The QuEChERS extraction coupled with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for simultaneous determination of 25 pesticide residues in brown rice was developed and validated with good accuracy and precision (recoveries of 70%–120% and RSD ≤20%). The overall detection rate and over the maximum residue limit (MRL) rate of pesticides in brown rice decreased from 39.15% and 3.59% in 2016 to 34.11% and 1.53% in 2020, respectively. The Yangtze River basin had a higher detection rate and over MRL rate (43.14% and 2.88%, respectively) compared with the Southeast Coastal region (37.28% and 2.77%) and the Northeast Plain (11.28% and 0.17%). Isoprothiolane (13.57%) and carbendazim (8.32%) were the most frequently detected in rice samples. Pesticide residues exceeding the MRLs were found most often in triazophos (0.75%) and isocarbophos (0.51%). The risk ranking of pesticide residues based on the ranking matrix showed that carbofuran, methamidophos, and isocarbophos had the highest residual risk scores of 25.09, 25.01, and 25.00, respectively. 17.7% of rice samples contained two or more pesticide residues. The cumulative risk assessments based on the relative potency factor (RPF) approach revealed that the cumulative risks of chronic and acute dietary exposure to organophosphorus, neonicotinoid insecticides, and triazole fungicides from rice ranged from 7.43 × 10−4 to 3.36 × 10−2, which were not considered of health concern. The study provides national-scale information on the contamination levels and health risks of pesticide residues in rice, which can help develop continuous monitoring programs for pesticide residue contamination in rice in China.

Modification and validation of the simultaneous detection of 38 pesticide residues method by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry with QuEChERS extraction in different oil crops and products

RATIONALE

Oil crops and products are important food materials in daily life. Pesticide residues in food could directly and indirectly endanger human health. However, the method for detecting multiple pesticides simultaneously is limited. In this study, an easy and efficient method for the simultaneous determination of 38 pesticides in oil crops and products was established and validated.

METHODS

All samples were treated with a modified QuEChERS procedure followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS/MS) analysis. Mass spectrometry was performed in positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mode. The mobile phase consisted of 0.1% formic acid in water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile. The column used was a Poroshell 120 EC-C18 and the flow rate was 0.3 mL/min.

RESULTS

The method was validated so that the calibration curves for all pesticides had good linearity in the concentration range of 10-1000 μg/L with correlation coefficients (R² ) above 0.9945. The recovery rates were between 70.1 and 120.0%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) (n = 6) ≤20.0%. The limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.5 to 10 μg/kg, limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 2.0 to 30 μg/kg, and the matrix effect (ME) ranged from -18.77 to 19.33%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The method proved to be accurate, sensitive, and stable. It can be used for rapid screening and confirmation of 38 pesticide residues in oil crops and products which takes 10 min for sample extraction and clean-up with less requirement of solvents. This study provides a technical basis for regulatory analysis and quality supervision of foods.

One-century sedimentary record, sources, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Dianchi Lake, China

In this study, the sedimentary records, sources, and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Dianchi Lake were analyzed. The concentrations of ΣPAH₁₆ in the sediments of Dianchi Lake ranged from 368 to 990 ng/g, with an average value of 572 ng/g, peaking in 1988. Economic development, rapid population growth, and rapid growth of coal consumption have a greater impact on the HMW (high molecular weight) PAHs than on the LMW (low molecular weight) PAHs in the sedimentary environment. The results of the diagnostic ratios and PCA (principal component analysis) model show that the main sources of PAHs were coal and biomass combustion, as well as the fossil fuel combustion in individual years. The risk assessment results showed that the PAH concentrations in the sediment were within a safe range. In the past 100 years of sediment pore water, other 2-3 ring LMW PAHs were within a safe range (except for Phe, which reached chronic toxic pollution levels in some years). With an increase in industrialization and urbanization, the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum has increased, and some of the 4-6 ring HMW PAHs have reached chronic toxicity or even acute toxicity in the sediment pore water.

Simultaneous determination of 35 organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in the serum of the general population in Wuhan by solid phase extraction-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

有机氯农药(OCPs)和多氯联苯(PCBs)是两类重要的持久性有机污染物,可在环境介质中长期存在,并通过多种途径进入人体,导致人体的高暴露风险。OCPs和PCBs对人体存在诸多健康危害,精准定量人体内OCPs和PCBs的暴露水平是健康效应评价的关键。该研究基于固相萃取-气相色谱-串联质谱联用技术(SPE-GC-MS/MS)建立了同时检测100 μL血清中35种OCPs和PCBs的分析方法。血清样品经尿素沉淀蛋白后,采用Oasis^® HLB小柱净化,正己烷-二氯甲烷混合溶液(1∶1, v/v)洗脱,氮吹近干,正己烷定容,多反应监测(MRM)模式检测,内标法定量分析。结果表明,OCPs和PCBs在0.05~50.0 ng/mL范围内线性关系良好,检出限在1.2~71.4 ng/L之间。35种目标分析物的加标回收率在72.6%~142%之间,相对标准偏差小于25%。利用所建立的方法检测了武汉市普通人群血清样本中OCPs和PCBs的浓度水平,结果表明武汉市普通人群广泛暴露于OCPs和PCBs,且以OCPs为主。有8种OCPs和7种PCBs检出率高于50%,其中p,p'-滴滴伊、p,p'-滴滴滴和甲氧滴滴涕检出率达100%,非类二噁英PCBs是PCBs的主要成分。血清中OCPs浓度随年龄增长呈升高趋势,在60岁以上存在性别差异;不同性别、年龄人群血清中PCBs浓度无统计学差异。该方法样本用量少,操作简便,具有较高的准确度和精密度,适用于环境健康研究中大量人群血清样本中痕量OCPs和PCBs的生物监测。

Estimating the dietary exposure and risk of persistent organic pollutants in China: A national analysis

Substantial heterogeneities have been found in previous estimations of the risk from dietary exposures to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China, mainly due to spatiotemporal variations. To comprehensively evaluate the dietary risks of POPs listed in the Stockholm Convention, more than 27,580 data records from 753 reports published over the last three decades were examined. Respectively, for various food categories, the results obtained for the range of mean concentrations of POPs are as follows: total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs: 1.4-27.1 μg/kg), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs: 1.8-29.3 μg/kg), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs: 0.046-2.82 μg/kg), polychorinated biphenyls (PCBs: 0.05-7.57 μg/kg), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD&Fs: 2.9-210 pg toxic equivalent (TEQ)/kg), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA: 0.02-0.97 μg/kg), perfluoroctane sulfonate (PFOS: 0.00082-2.76 μg/kg) and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs: 64-348.92 μg/kg). Temporal decreasing trends were observed for DDTs, HCHs, PBDEs, PCDD&Fs, and PFOA, with no significant change for other POPs. Meanwhile, the estimated daily intake for adults were 75.2 ± 43.6 ng/kg/day for DDTs, 123 ± 87 ng/kg/day for HCHs, 0.37 ± 0.17 pg TEQ/kg/day for PCDD&Fs, 17.8 ± 9.5 ng/kg/day for PCBs, 3.3 ± 1.8 ng/kg/day for PBDEs, 3.6 ± 1.9 ng/kg/day for PFOA, 3.3 ± 2.0 ng/kg/day for PFOS, and 2.5 ± 1.6 μg/kg/day for SCCPs. Furthermore, non-carcinogenic risks were the highest for PCBs (0.89) and PCDD&Fs (0.53), followed by PFOA (0.18), PFOS (0.17), HCHs (0.062), SCCPs (0.025), DDTs (0.0075), and PBDEs (0.00047). These findings illustrated that exposure to POPs declined due to the control policies implemented in China, while the cumulative risk of POPs was still higher than 1, indicating continuous efforts are required to mitigate associated contamination.

Risk of dietary intake of organochlorine pesticides among the childbearing-age women: A multiple follow-up study in North China

Exposure to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) can cause adverse health effects in the female population. We investigated the dietary OCP intake of childbearing-age women living in large agricultural areas of Northern China, as well as their associated health risks. Ten childbearing-age women were recruited during 2015-2016. Their weekly dietary intake diaries and food samples were collected over the course of five visits. The OCP residues of 322 food samples from seven categories (i.e., cereal, vegetable, fruit, fish, meat, egg, and milk) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The average concentrations of the total hexachlorocyclohexanes (ΣHCH), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes and their metabolites (ΣDDX), endosulfans (ΣES), and dieldrin and endrin (ΣDrin) in all food categories were, overall, much lower than the maximum residue limits. Relative high mean residues of ΣDrin and ΣES were found in fruits (ΣDrin: 0.687 ng g-1 wet weight (w.w.), ΣES: 2.24 ng g-1 w.w.) and vegetables (ΣDrin: 0.690 ng g-1 w.w., ΣES: 2.11 ng g-1 w.w.). The estimated daily dietary intake (EDI) of these compounds was calculated, with mean levels of 10.6 (ΣES) > 4.37 (ΣDrin) > 1.51 (ΣHCH) > 0.850 (ΣDDX) ng kg-1 day-1. Women during the heating period (from January to March) tended to ingest more ΣHCH, ΣDDX, ΣDrin, and ΣES. Overall, women had no obvious non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks due to intake of OCPs, but 83.9% of them has potential carcinogenic risk, with estimated life carcinogenic risk (LCR) exceeding 10-6. Furthermore, women had a higher potential carcinogenic risk during the heating period (mean LCR: 1.33 × 10-5) than during the non-heating period (mean LCR: 8.50 × 10-6). ΣDrin was the dominant OCP responsible for health risks, followed by ΣHCH. We concluded that women in North China still have some dietary OCP intake, especially during the heating period.

Associations of Dietary Exposure to Organochlorine Pesticides from Plant-Origin Foods with Lipid Metabolism and Inflammation in Women: A Multiple Follow-up Study in North China

This study explored effects of dietary OCP intake from plant-origin foods (cereals, fruits, and vegetables) consumption on lipid metabolism and inflammation of women using a multiple follow-up study. The results showed that dietary intake of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) [β = - 10.11, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): - 17.32, - 2.905] and o,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) (β = - 6.077, 95%CI: - 9.954, - 2.200) were overall negatively associated with serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), whereas other OCPs were not. Serum interleukin (IL)-8 was positively associated with intake of dieldrin (β = 0.390, 95%CI: 0.105, 0.674), endosulfan-β (β = 0.361, 95%CI: 0.198, 0.523), total endosulfan (β = 0.136, 95%CI: 0.037, 0.234), and total OCPs (β = 0.084, 95%CI: 0.016, 0.153), and negatively correlated with intake of p,p'-DDE (β = - 2.692, 95%CI: - 5.185, - 0.198). We concluded that dietary intake of some individual DDT-, DDE- dieldrin-, and endosulfan-class chemicals from plant-origin foods may interfere with lipid metabolism and inflammation responses.

Bioaccessibility dependence of dietary exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites and hexachlorocyclohexane isomers and their induced health risk: A case study in Beijing City, China

Bioaccessibility is essential for evaluating dietary intake of contaminants. However, there is insufficient information on the dependence of dietary intake and risk assessment of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDXs) and hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs) on bioaccessibility. Here, we investigated the bioaccessibilities of DDXs and HCHs in various foods and their influences on assessing exposure in the residents of Beijing City, China. Forty-three major foods in five types (fruit, vegetables, cereals, aquatic food, and meat) were sampled, and the bioaccessibility of DDXs and HCHs was evaluated using a static in vitro gastrointestinal digestion model. The bioaccessibility of DDXs in different food types ranked in the order of meat > vegetables > fruit > cereals > aquatic food, with mean ± standard deviation values of 62.2 ± 22.1%, 20.5 ± 10.6%, 12.4 ± 3.66%, 11.2 ± 9.69%, and 10.7 ± 4.97%, respectively. The highest average bioaccessibility of HCHs was found in meat (83.4 ± 14.2%), followed by fruit (41.0 ± 12.5%), vegetables (37.6 ± 18.1%), aquatic foods (24.2 ± 9.22%), and cereals (8.73 ± 4.07%). The estimated daily intakes (EDI) of the sum of DDXs and the sum of HCHs based on the bioaccessible concentration were only about 17% and 55% of the total EDI based on the residual concentration, respectively. Meat was found to play a more important role in EDI after bioaccessibility correction. The proportion of the population with potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks markedly decreased when considering bioaccessibility. It was concluded that bioaccessibility should be integrated into dietary exposure evaluation.

Anthropogenic-Driven Alterations in Black Carbon Sequestration and the Structure in a Deep Plateau Lake

The continuous flux of organic carbon (OC) from terrestrial ecosystems into inland water is an important component of the global carbon cycle. The buried OC pool in inland water sediments is considerable, and black carbon (BC) is a significant contributor to this OC pool because of the continuous growth in BC emissions. Therefore, determining the effect of BC on total OC burial and variations in the structure of BC during the burial process will contribute significantly to our understanding of lacustrine carbon cycling. This study investigated BC burial and its structural variations in response to anthropogenic drivers using four dated sedimentary cores from a deep plateau lake in China. The BC burial rate rose from 0.96 ± 0.64 g·m^-2·y^-1 (mean of sedimentary cores pre-1960s) to 4.83 ± 1.25 g·m^-2·y^-1 (after 2000), which is a 5.48 ± 2.12-fold rise. The increase of char was similar to those of BC. The growth rate of soot was 7.20 ± 4.30 times, which is higher than that of BC and char, increasing from 0.12 ± 0.08 to 0.64 ± 0.23 g·m^-2·y^-1. There was a decreasing trend in the ratio of char and soot at a mean rate of 62.8 ± 6.46% (excluding core 3) in relation to increased fossil fuel consumption. The contribution of BC to OC burial showed a significant increasing trend from the past to the present, particularly in cores 3 and 4, and the mean contribution of the four cores was 11.78 ± 2.84%. Source tracer results from positive matrix factorization confirmed that the substantial use of fossil fuels has promoted BC burial and altered the BC structure. This has resulted in BC with a higher aromatic content in the lake sediment, which exhibits reduced reactivity and increased stability. The strong correlation between BC and allochthonous total OC indicates that the input pathways of the buried BC in this plateau lake sediment were terrestrial surface processes and not atmospheric deposition.

Elimination of organochlorine pesticides from water by a new activated carbon prepared from Phoenix dactylifera date stones

This work focused on the characterization of activated carbon (AC) prepared by pyrolysis-chemical activation with phosphoric acid (60%) from date stones derived from three categories of date palm Phoenix dactylifera (Ajwa, Anbari, Khudri), and on its feasibility of elimination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water samples. The obtained results showed that the three-produced AC date stone had developed a porous structure, large specific surface area, and acidic property. Due to the high SBET (> 1200 m²/g), Ajwa stones activated coal was considered as the best AC that can be used for the adsorption of environmental contaminants. The effects of several parameters such as the Ajwa AC dose, the time of contact, the initial concentration of pesticides, and the pH were evaluated. The results showed that the adsorption balance of organochlorine pesticides on this AC was reached after a contact time of 60 min at an optimal pHzpc equal to 2. In addition, 0.4 g of AC was the best quantity found to retain the largest quantity of pesticides while considering the economic part.

Agriculture Development, Pesticide Application and Its Impact on the Environment

Pesticides are indispensable in agricultural production. They have been used by farmers to control weeds and insects, and their remarkable increases in agricultural products have been reported. The increase in the world's population in the 20th century could not have been possible without a parallel increase in food production. About one-third of agricultural products are produced depending on the application of pesticides. Without the use of pesticides, there would be a 78% loss of fruit production, a 54% loss of vegetable production, and a 32% loss of cereal production. Therefore, pesticides play a critical role in reducing diseases and increasing crop yields worldwide. Thus, it is essential to discuss the agricultural development process; the historical perspective, types and specific uses of pesticides; and pesticide behavior, its contamination, and adverse effects on the natural environment. The review study indicates that agricultural development has a long history in many places around the world. The history of pesticide use can be divided into three periods of time. Pesticides are classified by different classification terms such as chemical classes, functional groups, modes of action, and toxicity. Pesticides are used to kill pests and control weeds using chemical ingredients; hence, they can also be toxic to other organisms, including birds, fish, beneficial insects, and non-target plants, as well as air, water, soil, and crops. Moreover, pesticide contamination moves away from the target plants, resulting in environmental pollution. Such chemical residues impact human health through environmental and food contamination. In addition, climate change-related factors also impact on pesticide application and result in increased pesticide usage and pesticide pollution. Therefore, this review will provide the scientific information necessary for pesticide application and management in the future.

Levels and profiles of persistent organic pollutants in breast milk in China and their potential health risks to breastfed infants: A review

Although some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were prohibited or limited in use several decades ago, they are still frequently detected in the human body. The purpose of this study was to understand the levels and profiles of POPs in breast milk in China and assess their potential health risks among breastfed infants under six months of age. A literature review focused on China was performed for studies published from 2001 to 2020. The POP levels in breast milk along with other important variables were extracted, and then the average individual POP levels in breast milk were estimated. This review summarises the distribution of traditional and new POPs, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), legacy brominated flame retardants (BFRs), perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and chlorinated paraffins (CPs) and reported notably high levels of short-chain chlorinated paraffins and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl) ethylene (p,p'-DDE) in breast milk. Although the levels of traditional POPs generally declined over time, especially p,p'-DDE and beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH), women living in coastal areas, urban areas, and southern China still have a high body burden of certain POPs. In the present study, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of POPs through breastfeeding was used to evaluate the health risk for infants by comparing with acceptable levels. The findings suggested that infants born in coastal areas most likely suffered potential health risk from exposure to DDT, and the health risk of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in infants in most nationwide regions remains a concern. More importantly, the EDI of PCBs for infants exceeds the safe limit on a national scale. Continuous surveillance of PCBs in breast milk is critical to evaluate the potential health effects on humans.

Analysis of Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in Various Vegetable Oils Collected in Chinese Markets

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), chemicals frequently used in agriculture, are a group of highly toxic and persistent organic pollutants. This study assesses the distribution and congener profiles of residual OCPs in 11 types of vegetable oils collected from Chinese markets. All samples were extracted using the modified QuEChERS method prior to analysis by gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The sesame oil samples had the highest concentration of OCPs, within the range of 15.30-59.38 ng/g, whereas the peanut oil samples had the lowest OCP concentrations, within the range of 10.83-35.65 ng/g. The possible effect of the processing technology on the pesticide residues in these vegetable oils was also evaluated. It was found that the pressing method leaves more OCPs in vegetable oils than the aqueous extraction and cold-pressing, but the result for leaching was not obvious. In light of the obtained results, it was estimated that the average daily intake of different pesticides is between 0.01 and 2.20 ng/kg bw/day for urban and rural households. Hence, it can be affirmed that, given the amount of the concentration of OCPs detected in the vegetable oils collected from Chinese markets, there are no obvious health risks for urban and rural households by intake.

Residual effects of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in an e-waste recycling area compared with heavy metal pollution

Disposal of e-waste is a global issue and has caused serious pollution in recycling areas. Most of these areas had once developed intensive agriculture and might incur organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) pollution. However, this used to be neglected. Here we discuss the joint effects via analyzing OCPs and heavy metals in a notorious e-waste recycling area. The OCPs showed higher (p = 0.005) pollution levels in soils from agricultural zone than in core e-waste recycling zone, which is opposite for heavy metals (p = 0.02). The OCPs and heavy metals showed the highest concentrations in the open burning site locating in the boundary between the e-waste and agricultural zones. Composition profiles further indicated that the land use changes from agriculture to e-waste industry might accelerate the release of buried OCPs. Worse still, the OCPs and heavy metals might pose carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to local residents, respectively.

Sediment record of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Dianchi lake, southwest China: Influence of energy structure changes and economic development

Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a sediment core from Dianchi Lake, southwest China, were analysed. The influence of changes in China's energy structure for 2-6 ringed PAHs was investigated to assess sources and the impact of socioeconomic development on temporal changes in concentrations. The concentration of the ΣPAH₁₆ ranged from 746 to 2293 ng g^-1. Prior to the 1960s relatively low concentrations of the ΣPAH₁₆ and a larger proportion of 2-3-ring PAHs indicated that biomass combustion was the main source of PAHs. A rapid increase in the concentrations of 2-3 ring PAHs between 1975 and 2004 was attributed to population growth and coal consumption. A declining trend since 2004 was interpreted as being due to local changes in household energy usage. Increased concentrations of 4-ring PAH between 1975-2005 and 5-6-ring PAHs between the 1980s to 2004 showed correlations with increased coal consumption and the number of motor vehicles, respectively. These were caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization in the Dianchi watershed following the implementation of the Reform and Open Policy in 1978. A subsequent decline in the concentrations of 4-ring and 5-6-ring PAHs may have been due to decreased coal consumption and improvements in emission standards, respectively. Source apportionment by a PMF model revealed that coal combustion (29.2%), vehicle emissions (24.2%), petrogenic sources (21.8%), and biomass combustion (24.9%) were the sources of PAHs in the lake sediment core, and that coal combustion was the most important regional source of PAHs pollution.

Presence and Health Risks of Obsolete and Emerging Pesticides in Paddy Rice and Soil from Thailand and China

Organochlorine (OCPs) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) have been intensively applied in rice paddy field farming to control pest infestation and increase the yield. In this study, we investigated the presence of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in paddy rice and soil from rice plantations in Thailand and China. According to concentration and distribution of OCPs, the most abundant OCPs residues in rice and soil from Thailand and China were dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and hexachlorocyclohexanes. The OPPs of methidathion, carbophenothion, chlorpyrifos, and diazinon were common to Thailand and China in both types of samples. The detection frequency of multiple types of these pesticides was greater than 50% of total samples. The relative concentration of some OPPs residues in rice and soil from Thailand and China were significantly different from each other (p < 0.0083), whereas, no significant difference was observed for the relative concentration of OCPs residues in rice and soil from both countries, except for HCHs (p < 0.05). Bioaccumulation factors of OCPs between rice and soil samples indicated that OCPs and OPPs in soil could accumulate in rice. The carcinogenic and non- carcinogenic risks of OCPs and OPPs seem to be in the safe range as recommended by the European Union.

Occurrence of banned and commonly used pesticide residues in concentrated leachate: Implications for ecological risk assessment

Amounts of banned and current pesticides have been used in domestic and agricultural pest control, and their residues have accumulated along the waste stream. In this work, pesticides were characterized in concentrated leachates (CLs) from 5 municipal landfill sites, 2 incineration plants and 1 composting plant in six provinces. A total of 31 pesticides were detected which included 8 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs, 303-2974 ng/L), 16 organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs, 1380-13,274 ng/L) and 7 synthetic pyrethroids (SPs, 319-5636 ng/L). Despite the ten years ban of hexachlorocyclohexane, methamidophos and parathion-methyl, they were still in CL at a mean value of 320 ng/L and 88 ng/L, respectively. The average Σ₈OCPs, Σ₁₆OPPs and Σ₇SPs in CL from landfill sites were approximately 2.8, 1.1 and 4.5 times higher than those from incineration plants, which might have been influenced by pH, moisture and/or HRT. Additionally, it was found that CL from incineration plants and composting plant with lower pesticide contents posed a much higher acute and chronic eco-risk. Methamidophos was the dominant pesticide in CL from incineration plants, which was much higher than any other pesticides detected. The annual emissions of Σ₈OCPs, Σ₁₆OPPs and Σ₇SPs discharged from landfill-CL were estimated to be 2370, 10,357 and 2994 g, respectively. It was evident from the study that long-term release of CL after waste disposal could cause potential risk of ecological pollution.

Metabolomics study and meta-analysis on the association between maternal pesticide exposome and birth outcomes

BACKGROUND

Pregnant women are exposed to a number of pesticides which are widely used in China. Their potential risks on reproduction and infants are still unknown.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to investigate whether infant's birth weight and length of gestation were associated with levels of various pesticides in maternal blood based on Nanjing Medical University (NMU) affiliated hospitals data and meta-analysis, and also to explore the possible intermediate metabolomics pathways.

METHODS

Eligible subjects (n = 102) were included in this study from the affiliated hospitals of NMU. Gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and Q-Exactive mass spectrometer (QE) were used to detect 37 pesticides (9 organophosphorus pesticides, 7 organochlorine pesticides, 5 carbamate pesticides, and 16 others) and 161 metabolites (53 in animo acid metabolism 47 in lipid metabolism, 18 in carbohydrate metabolism, 14 in nucleotide metabolism and 29 in other metabolisms) in maternal blood, respectively. Multi-linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were performed to identify the association of single/mixed pesticide exposure in maternal blood with birth weight and length of gestation. Moreover, we conducted a meta-analysis including additional 2497 subjects to evaluate whether exposure to key pesticide, β-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) was associated with decreased birth weight globally. Mediation analysis was used to explore the metabolic alteration mediating the association between key pesticide exposure and birth outcomes.

RESULTS

We found that decreased birth weight was significantly associated with increasing levels of mecarbam and β-HCH. We did not find any association between length of gestation and these pesticides. Among pesticides with detection rate more than 50%, BKMR analysis found an overall negative association of mixed pesticides exposure with birth weight, and verified that β-HCH was the key pesticide for such effect. Meta-analysis revealed a significantly negative association between exposure to β-HCH and birth weight. Metabolomics identified three metabolites and five metabolites as significant mediators for the effect of mecarbam and β-HCH, respectively, among which glyceraldehyde and its related glycerolipid metabolism and thyroxine and its related thyroid hormone metabolism were found to be the mostly enriched mediating metabolic pathway.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the comprehensive pesticide exposome and metabolome wide associational study combined with meta-analysis, we found that prenatal exposure to β-HCH and mecarbam decreased birth weight via disrupting thyroid hormone metabolism and glyceraldehyde metabolism, providing new insights into the toxic effects of exposure to pesticides on birth outcomes.

Impact of environmental contaminants on reproductive health of male domestic ruminants: a review

Environmental contaminants are gaining more attention in the livestock sector lately due to their harmful effects on productivity and fertility of livestock. Recent research indicates that many domestic ruminants are becoming subfertile/infertile due to confounding reasons associated with management. Contaminants like metals, metalloids, herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, chemicals, or natural contaminants are present everywhere in day to day life and are becoming a threat to the livestock. Studies on a broad-spectrum of animals suggest that high doses of acute or low doses of chronic exposure to the contaminants lead to disruption of multi-organs/systems including reproductive function. The lowered reproductive efficiency in animals is attributed to the endocrine disruptor activities of the environmental contaminants on the gonads, affecting gametogenesis and steroidogenesis. In vitro studies on testicular cells and the semen suggest that spermatozoa are more susceptible to damage by environmental contaminants. The quality of the semen happens to be a critical factor in the livestock industry. Contaminants affecting gametogenesis and steroidogenesis may lead to devastating consequences to the livestock reproduction, and thus the production. However, there is a lack of collective data on the effect of such environmental contaminants on the fertility of male domestic ruminants. This review discusses the studies related to the impact of environmental contaminants on male fertility in large (bull and buffalo) and small (sheep and goat) ruminants by focusing on the underlying molecular interactions between the contaminants and gonads.

The decomposition and ecological risk of DDTs and HCHs in the soil-water system of the Meijiang River

This research project was designed to study the residues of OCPs (organochlorine pesticides) in the sediments of the Meijiang River Basin. Samples from the Meijiang River Basin were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after being pretreated by Soxhlet extraction, and their compositions, distributions and sources were evaluated. The current study presents the distribution of OCPs in the soils and sediments of the Meijiang River Basin. The results demonstrate that OCPs contamination is an important environmental concern due to the excessive use of these compounds in the agricultural and industrial sectors. The ratios of α-HCH/γ-HCH, (DDE + DDD)/∑DDTs, p,p-DDT/o,p-DDT, and DDD/DDE were used as indices for identifying the possible pollution sources and assessing the decomposition of the parent compounds and the recent γ-HCH and DDT inputs. At the XY (Xiyang) and DSGYY (Dongshenggongyeyan) sites, the pollutants had industrial origins. At other sites (QTH (Qutianhu), LXC (Longxichun), ZJC (Zhenjiaochun), HKC (Hekouchun), GS (Guangshan) and RGQ (Raogongqiao)), the pollution was caused by dissolved organic matter. The SHB site was polluted by transportation and upstream pollutants. At the SXC (Shixichun), YZX (Youzhihe), DSH (Dongshihe) and ZGG (Zhegupai) sites, the metabolite was p,p'-DDD and was produced in an environment with anaerobic conditions. At the FJC (Fujiangkou), QTH (Qiutianhu), GS (Guangshang) and MX (Meixi) sites, the metabolite was DDE and was produced under aerobic conditions. In view of the health risks, the risk quotients for these contaminants were evaluated, and all risk quotients were less than 1 under the best-case scenario. This result suggests that the investigated pollutants may pose little hazard to the local ecosystem. The sediments containing toxic pesticides had a less than 55% ecological risk, indicating that the ecological risk of HCHs in the soils from the Meijiang River Basin is low.

Risk assessment of organochlorine pesticides in drinking water source of the Yangtze River

Organochlorine pesticides have been banned for many years, but the residual trace amount of organochlorine in water may still pose ecotoxicological risk. Meanwhile, the potential risk of organochlorine pesticides released from sediments, especially into drinking water sources, is receiving increasing attention. The present study assessed the pollution and potential risk of drinking water sources along the midstream and downstream Yangtze River. Residues of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water, suspended particle matter (SPM), and sediment were evaluated with isotope dilution HRGC/HRMS. The results indicated that OCPs in water, SPM, and sediment ranged in 0.52-92.97 ng/L, 0.10-4.10 ng/L, and 0.038-11.36 ng/g, respectively. The predominant OCPs in water, SPM, and sediment were β-HCH, p,p'-DDE and PeCB. At site Y1, 8, 13, 18, β-HCH has a higher proportion in sediment samples, while, α-HCH has a higher proportion in SPM samples. The industrial use of HCHs in the history was the main HCHs source for most water and sediment samples, which indicated an absence of fresh inputs of industrial HCHs. Meanwhile, the abundance of p,p'-DDE in water, sediment and SPM samples could be attributed to long-term aerobic degradation of DDTs. The values of ffsw of HCHs, DDTs and PeCB indicate the transfer from water to sediment. Risk assessment showed that HCHs and DDTs posed low ecotoxicological risk to the Yangtze River.

Residues of legacy organochlorine pesticides and DDT metabolites in highly consumed fish from the polluted Guanabara Bay, Brazil: distribution and assessment of human health risk

Organochlorine (OCP) pesticides were determined in samples of sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis), whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), and mullet (Mugil liza) from Guanabara Bay (state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). OCP concentrations and fish consumption were linked with acceptable daily intake values in order to assess the human health risk for the Brazilian population. The total concentrations of OCPs (Σ OCP) was 6.6 ng/g f.w., 7.5 ng/g f.w., and 2.8 ng/g f.w. for sardines, corvina, and mullet, respectively. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) among the species related to o,p'-DDD and o,p'-DDT concentrations. Both DDT-related compounds were 5 and 76 times more abundant in sardines than in whitemouth croaker and mullet. Newly discovered DDT metabolite, o-Cl-DDMU, was frequently detected in the fish. None of the samples exceeded the maximum limits for acceptable levels of OCP residues. According to the data of average intake of Brazilian population, none of three species exceeded toxicological parameter. The investigated fishes are considered as safe for human consumption in regard to exposure of the studied OCPs. However, fish may be a intake source of OCP metabolites such as o-Cl-DDMU whose toxicity is still unknown.

Shorter interval and multiple flooding-drying cycling enhanced the mineralization of 14C-DDT in a paddy soil

DDT and its main metabolites (DDTs) are still the residual contaminants in soil. Sequential anaerobic-aerobic cycling has long been approved for enhancing the degradation of DDTs in soil. However, there is a lack of study investigating whether anaerobic-aerobic cycling would enhance the mineralization of DDT, and what a kind of anaerobic-aerobic management regimes would be optimal. To fill these gaps, the fate of ¹⁴C-DDT under different flooding-drying cycles was examined in a paddy soil by monitoring its mineralization and bioavailability. The results show the total mineralization of ¹⁴C-DDT in 314 days accounted for 1.01%, 1.30%, and 1.41%, individually for the treatments subjected to one, two, and three flooding-drying cycles. By comparison, the treatment subjected to the permanently aerobic phase had only 0.12% cumulative mineralization. Shorter intervals and multiple flooding-drying cycles enhanced the mineralization of ¹⁴C-DDT, however, reduced its bioavailability. Therefore, the enhanced mineralization was explained from an abiotic pathway as predicted by the one-electron reduction potential (E₁), the Fukui function for nucleophilic attack (f⁺) and the steps for anaerobic decarboxylation. From a practical view, it is important to investigate how the anaerobic-aerobic interval and frequency would affect the degradation and mineralization of DDT, which is very essential in developing remediation strategies.

Dietary exposure and risk assessment of organochlorine pesticide residues in rural communities living within catchment areas of iSimangaliso World Heritage Site, South Africa

Dietary intake of contaminated food is a major route of human exposure to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Despite the prevalence of OCP usage in southern Africa for several decades, their impact on socioeconomically vulnerable communities remains largely overlooked. We investigated the accumulation of OCPs in crops commonly cultivated by rural communities surrounding iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa. All samples analysed were found to be contaminated, with total OCP concentrations ranging between 190 and 240 ng g^-1 ww. Elevated levels of OCP residues were detected in all products, with the majority of samples exceeding European Commission's maximum residue limits (MRLs). We combine these results with local OCP fish tissue estimates to assess potential dietary risks. Cumulative risk assessment indicated potential non-cancer risks associated with heptachlor epoxide, while a cancer risk as high as 1 in 10 was found to be associated with aldrin and dieldrin. This far exceeds USEPA guidelines and indicates that OCP residues in crops and fish from the study area pose a high risk to human health. The results of this study call for further attention to be given to the health implications of continued OCP use not only within the study area but also in Southern Africa in general.

Historical Records and Source Apportionment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Over the Past 100 Years in Dianchi Lake, a Plateau Lake in Southwest China

Two sediment cores were collected from Dianchi Lake, a plateau lake in Southwest China, to study the temporal trends and to investigate the sources of sedimentary deposited polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. The ΣPAH16 concentration in the two sediment cores ranged from 172.5 to 2244.8 ng/g and from 211.4 to 1777.8 ng/g, with mean values of 1106.2 and 865.1 ng/g, respectively. Three temporal trends for the ΣPAH16 concentration and the composition of PAHs in Dianchi Lake all showed three typical changing stages: (1) slight changes in deeper segments before the 1950s; (2) a rapid increase in PAH concentrations between the 1960s and 1990s; and (3) a slight reduction from the 1990s onward. These trends differ from those observed in developed countries due to differences in the timing of industrialization and urbanization processes. According to the results of the molecular ratios and principal component analysis, the PAH deposition was dominated by coal combustion, wood combustion, and vehicle emissions before and after the 1960s, respectively.
