Organophosphorus flame retardants in mangrove sediments from the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Investigation of alkyl, aryl, and chlorinated OPFRs in sediments from estuarine systems: Seasonal variation, spatial distribution and ecological risks assessment

Estuaries in South Africa are very important for biodiversity conservation and serve as focal points for leisure and tourism activities. The organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) levels in these aquatic systems haven't been documented in any studies as of yet. Due to the negative effects of persistent organic pollutants in South African estuaries, we examined the occurrence of eight OPFRs in sediments of two estuaries by studying their spatiotemporal distribution, season variation, and ecological risks. The Sundays Estuary (SDE), a semi-urbanized agricultural surrounding system, recorded an ∑8OPFR concentration in sediments that ranged from 0.71 to 22.5 ng/g dw, whereas Swartkops Estuary, a largely urbanized system, recorded a concentration that ranged from 0.61 to 119 ng/g dw. Alkyl-OPFRs were the prevalent homologue in both estuaries compared to the chlorinated and aryl groups. While TBP, TCPP, and TCrP were the most abundant compounds among the homologue groups. There was no distinct seasonal trend of ∑8OPFR concentration in either estuary, with summer and autumn seasons recording the highest concentrations in SDE and SWE, respectively. Ecological risks in the majority of the study sites for the detected compounds were at low (RQ < 0.1) and medium levels (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1) for certain species of fish, Daphnia magna and algae. However, the cumulative RQs for all the compounds had ∑RQs ≥1 for most sites in both estuaries, indicating that these organisms, if present in both estuaries, may be exposed to potential ecological concerns due to accumulated OPFR chemicals. The scope of future studies should be broadened to include research areas that are not only focus on the bioaccumulation patterns of these compounds but also find sustainable ways to reduce them from these estuarine environments.

Universal occurrence of organophosphate tri-esters and di-esters in marine sediments: Evidence from the Okinawa Trough in the East China Sea

Despite numerous data on organophosphate tri-esters (tri-OPEs) in the environment, literatures on organophosphate di-esters (di-OPEs) in field environment, especially marine sediments remain scarce. This study addresses this gap by analyzing 35 abyssal sediment samples from the middle Okinawa Trough in the East China Sea. A total of 25 tri-OPEs and 10 di-OPEs were determined, but 13 tri-OPEs and 2 di-OPEs were nondetectable in any of these sediment samples. The concentrations of ∑12tri-OPE and ∑8di-OPE were 0.108-32.2 ng/g (median 1.11 ng/g) and 0.548-15.0 ng/g (median 2.74 ng/g). Chlorinated (Cl) tri-OPEs were the dominant tri-esters, accounting for 47.5 % of total tri-OPEs on average, whereas chlorinated di-OPEs represented only 19.2 % of total di-OPEs. This discrepancy between the relatively higher percentage of Cl-tri-OPEs and lower abundance of Cl-di-OPEs may be ascribed to the stronger environmental persistence of chlorinated tri-OPEs. Source assessment suggested that di-OPEs were primarily originated from the degradation of tri-OPEs rather than industrial production. Long range waterborne transport facilitated by oceanic currents was an important input pathway for OPEs in sediments from the Okinawa Trough. These findings enhance the understanding of the sources and transport of OPEs in marine sediments, particularly in the Okinawa Trough.

Insights into the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological implications of organophosphate triesters in surface sediments from polluted urban rivers across China

Organophosphate triesters (tri-OPEs) are a kind of widespread contaminants in the world, particularly in China, which is a major producer and user of tri-OPEs. However, tri-OPE pollution in urban river sediments in China remains unclear. In current work, we carried out the first nationwide investigation to comprehensively monitor 10 conventional and five emerging tri-OPEs in sediments of 173 black-odorous urban rivers throughout China. Concentrations of 10 conventional and five emerging tri-OPEs were 3.8-1240 ng/g dw (mean: 253 ng/g dw) and 0.21-1107 ng/g dw (68 ng/g dw), respectively, and significantly differed among the cities sampled but generally decreased from Northeast and East China to Central and West China. These spatial patterns suggest that tri-OPE pollution was mainly from local sources and was controlled by the industrial and economic development levels in these four areas, as indicated by the significant correlations between tri-OPE concentrations and gross domestic production, gross industrial output, and daily wastewater treatment capacity. Although the tri-OPE composition varied spatially at different sites, which indicated different tri-OPE input patterns, it was commonly dominated by tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (conventional tri-OPEs) and bisphenol A-bis(diphenyl phosphate) and isodecyl diphenyl phosphate (emerging tri-OPEs). A risk assessment indicated that tri-OPEs in most sampling sediments had a low to moderate risk to aquatic organisms.

Organophosphate Triesters and Their Transformation Products in Sediments of Mangrove Wetlands in the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea

As emerging pollutants, organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been reported in coastal environments worldwide. Nevertheless, information on the occurrence and ecological risks of OPEs, especially the related transformation products, in mangrove wetlands is scarce. For the first time, the coexistence and distribution of OP triesters and their transformation products in three mangrove wetlands in the Beibu Gulf were investigated using ultrasonication and solid-phase extraction, followed by UHPLC-MS/MS detection. The studied OPEs widely existed in all the sampling sites, with the total concentrations ranging from 6.43 ng/g dry weight (dw) to 39.96 ng/g dw and from 3.33 ng/g dw to 22.50 ng/g dw for the OP triesters and transformation products, respectively. Mangrove wetlands tend to retain more OPEs than the surrounding coastal environment. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the TOC was not the sole factor in determining the OPEs' distribution, and degradation was not the main source of the transformation products in mangrove sediments in the Beibu Gulf. The ecological risks of selected OPEs for different organisms were also assessed, revealing a medium to high risk posed by OP diesters to organisms. The levels or coexistence of OPEs and their metabolites in mangroves need constant monitoring, and more toxicity data should be further studied to assess the effect on normal aquatic organisms.

Organophosphate flame retardants and their metabolites in the Pearl River Estuary: Occurrence, influencing factors, and ecological risk control strategies based on a mass balance model

Estuaries serve as crucial filters for land-based pollutants to the open sea, but there is a lack of information on the migration and fate of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) within estuaries. This study focused on the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) by examining the co-occurrence of OPFRs and their metabolites and quantifying their transport fluxes using a mass balance model. The seawater concentrations of OPFRs and their metabolites exhibited significant seasonal variations (p < 0.01), while the sediment concentrations of OPFRs reflected the long-term distributional equilibrium in the PRE. The concentration of Σ9OPFRs in seawater showed a relentless dilution from the entrance to the offshore region in the normal and wet seasons, which was significantly in accordance with the gradients of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and salinity (p < 0.05). Furthermore, horizontal migration dominated the transport of OPFRs, and the inventory assessment revealed that both the water column and sediment were important reservoirs in the PRE. According to the estimated fluxes from the mass balance model, riverine input emerged as the principal pathway for OPFR entry into the PRE (1.55 × 105, 6.28 × 104, and 9.00 × 104 kg/yr in the normal, dry and wet seasons, respectively), whereas outflow to the open sea predominantly determined the main fates of the OPFRs. The risk quotient (RQ) results showed that EHDPHP (0.835) in water posed medium ecological risk, while other OPFRs and metabolites presented relatively lower risk (RQ < 0.1). The risk control effects were evaluated through scenario simulations of mathematical fitting between controllable source factors and the RQ of risky OPFR. The risk of EHDPHP in the PRE could be effectively reduced by restricting its concentrations in entrance region (<9.31, 8.67, and 12.7 ng/L in the normal, dry and wet seasons, respectively) of the PRE. This research offers foundational insights into environmental management and pollution control strategies for emerging pollutants in estuaries.

Occurrence, source apportionment, and ecological risk assessment of organophosphate esters in surface sediment from the Ogun and Osun Rivers, Southwest Nigeria

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are synthetic chemicals widely used as e.g., flame retardants and plasticisers in various consumer products. Due to the toxicity of OPEs in aquatic ecosystems, exposure of fauna and flora to these compounds is of potential concern. In this study, the concentrations, profiles, sources, and ecological risk of eight OPEs were investigated in the sediments from the two major rivers in southwest Nigeria. Concentrations of ∑OPEs in surface sediments were in the range 13.1 - 2110 ng/g dry weight (dw) (median: 378 ng/g dw) in the Ogun River and 24.7-589 ng/g dw (median: 174 ng/g dw) in the Osun River. These concentrations are broadly within the range of those reported in surface sediment in previous studies conducted in other locations around the world. Tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) was the dominant OPE in the sediment samples with a median concentration of 337 and 126 ng/g dw for the Ogun and Osun Rivers respectively, while tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) was not detected in any sample. Excluding TBOEP, the chlorinated organophosphate esters: tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-chloro-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) were the dominant OPEs in the Osun River, while the aryl-OPEs: triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), and tri-m-tolyl phosphate (TMTP) were dominant in the Ogun River. Under a median exposure scenario, moderate ecological risk was predicted from exposure to TCIPP in the Osun River. In contrast, under a high exposure scenario, concentrations of TDCIPP (risk quotient, RQ = 5.33-5.37) constituted a high ecological risk in both rivers, with moderate risks observed for TBOEP (RQ = 0.022-0.18) and TCIPP (RQ = 0.097 - 0.16). Therefore, the risk to aquatic organisms from concomitant exposure to mixtures of OPEs in freshwater ecosystems requires further investigation.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) in a heavily polluted river in South China: Occurrence, spatiotemporal trends, sources, and phase distribution

In the past decade, organophosphate esters (OPEs) undergo rapid increase in production and use. Meanwhile, owing to their additive property, OPEs exhibit liability to escape from related products and therefore ubiquity in various environments. Moreover, numerous researches verify their bioavailability and negative effects on biota and human, hence their occurrence and associated risks have caught much concern, particularly those in aquatic systems. So far, however, OPEs in water are generally investigated as a whole, their phase distribution and behavior in waterbodies are incompletely characterized. We examined 25 OPEs in water (including dissolved and particulate phases), sediment, and sediment core samples from the Lian River, which flows through the Guiyu e-waste recycling zone and Shantou specific economic zone in South China. Compared to most global waterbodies, the Lian River showed high or ultrahigh OPE levels in both water and sediments, particularly in the reaches surrounded by e-waste recycling and plastic-related industries, which were the top two greatest OPE sources. Non-industrial and agriculture-related anthropogenic activities also contributed OPEs. Sediment core data suggested that OPEs have been present in waters in Guiyu since the 1960s and showed a temporal trend consistent with the local waste-recycling business. The phase distribution of OPEs in the Lian River was significantly correlated with their hydrophobicity and solubility. Owing to their wide range of physicochemical properties, OPE congeners showed significant percentage differences in the Lian River water and sediments. Generally, OPEs in water reflect their dynamic real-time inputs, while those in sediment signify their accumulative deposition, which is another cause of their phase distribution disparities in the Lian River. The physicochemical parameters of OPEs first imposed negative and then positive influences on their dissolved phase-sediment distribution, indicating the involvement of both the adsorption of dissolved OPEs and the deposition of particle-bound OPEs.

Effects of nitrogen stress on uptake and translocation of organophosphate esters by watermifoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum L.) in an aquatic ecosystem

Although organophosphate esters (OPEs) and nitrogen (N) are normally present in aquatic environments, the effects of the plant uptake, accumulation, and translocation of OPEs in different levels of N remain ambiguous. To better understand these processes, watermifoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum L.) as tested plant was chosen to investigate the effects of different N levels on the uptake and translocation of OPEs by plants in matched water-sediment-plant samples. After two months, we found the root-water concentration factors, root-sediment concentration factors, and translocation factors (TFs) were significantly changed with the levels of N (p < 0.05), implying that the presence of N could alter uptake, accumulation, and translocation of OPEs in M. aquaticum, particularly the process of root absorption. Low concentrations of N could remarkably promote the uptake of OPEs by M. aquaticum. However, when the concentrations of N in water were higher than 200 mg/L, the plants' growth and OPE accumulation by M. aquaticum were obviously inhibited with the elevated N contents. Moreover, the enrichment and environmental transport of OPEs in M. aquaticum seemed to be closely associated with physicochemical parameters; the octanol-water partition coefficient had significant relationships with measured organic carbon-normalized sediment-water partition coefficients and TFs in the present study. Additionally, the substituents and structures of OPEs could also affect the accumulation and translocation of OPEs in M. aquaticum, including the chlorination degree and alkyl chain length. This study could improve our understanding of uptake and translocation of OPEs in aquatic plants under different levels of N.

Environmental occurrence and ecotoxicity of aquaculture-derived plastic leachates

Plastic products such as fishing nets and foam buoys have been widely used in aquaculture. To enhance the desirable characteristics of the final equipment, plastic gear for aquaculture is mixed with a wide range of additives. Recent studies have shown that additives could be leached out to the environment with a long-term use of aquaculture plastics, forming aquaculture-derived plastic leachates. It should be emphasized that some leachates such as phthalic acid esters (PAEs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) are endocrine disruptors, which could increase the exposure risk of aquatic products and subsequently display potential threats to human health via food chain. However, systematic studies on the release, occurrence, bioaccumulation, and toxic effects of aquaculture-derived plastic leachates are missing, overlooking their potential sources and ecotoxicological risks in aquatic environments. We have reviewed and compared the concentrations of major plastic leachates in the water environment and organisms of global aquaculture and non-farmed areas, confirming that aquaculture leachate is an important source of contaminants in the environment. Moreover, the toxic effects of aquaculture-derived plastic additives and the related mechanisms are summarized with fish as a representative, revealing their potential health risk. In addition, we proposed current challenges and future research needs, which provides scientific guidance for the use and management of plastic products in aquaculture industries.

The physiological effect of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seed germination and seedling growth under the presence of copper

This study investigated the physiological and biochemical impacts of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) germination and growth performance in the presence and absence of copper. The study evaluated seed germination, growth, OPFRs concentrations, chlorophyll fluorescence index (F_v/F_m and F_v/F₀), and antioxidant enzyme activity. It also calculated the root accumulation of OPFRs and their root-stem translocation. At the germination stage, at a concentration of 20 μg·L^-1 OPFR exposure, wheat germination vigor, root, and shoot lengths were significantly decreased compared to the control. However, the addition of a high concentration of copper (60 mg·L^-1) decreased by 80%, 82%, and 87% in the seed germination vitality index and root and shoot elongation, respectively, compared to 20 μg·L^-1 of OPFR treatment. At the seedling stage, a concentration of 50 μg·L^-1 of OPFRs significantly decreased by 42% and 5.4% in wheat growth weight and the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) compared to the control. However, the addition of a low concentration of copper (15 mg·L^-1) slightly enhanced the growth weight compared to the other two co-exposure treatments, but the results were not significant (p > 0.05). After 7 days of exposure, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (indicates lipid peroxidation) content in wheat roots significantly increased compared to the control and was higher than in leaves. MDA contents in wheat roots and shoots were decreased by 18% and 6.5% when OPFRs were combined with low Cu treatment compared with single OPFRs treatment, but SOD activity was slightly improved. These results suggest that the co-exposure of copper and OPFRs enhances reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress tolerance. Seven OPFRs were detected in wheat roots and stems, with root concentration factors (RCFs) and translocation factors (TFs) ranging from 67 to 337 and 0.05 to 0.33, respectively, for the seven OPFRs in a single OPFR treatment. The addition of copper significantly increased OPFR accumulation in the root and aerial parts. In general, the addition of a low concentration of copper promoted wheat seedling elongation and biomass and did not significantly inhibit the germination process. OPFRs could mitigate the toxicity of low-concentration copper on wheat but had a weak detoxification effect on high-concentration copper. These results indicated that the combined toxicity of OPFRs and Cu had antagonistic effects on the early development and growth of wheat.

Uptake, accumulation, and translocation of organophosphate esters by watermifoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum) in an aquatic ecosystem: effects of chemical structure and concentrations

In order to explore the environmental behavior of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in aquatic environment, the accumulation and distribution of OPEs in water, sediment, and plant were investigated. In this study, watermifoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum) were exposed with ten OPEs for concentrations of 200 ng/g, 500 ng/g, 1000 ng/g, and 2000 ng/g, respectively. The concentrations of Σ₁₀OPEs in rhizosphere sediment were higher than those in non-rhizosphere sediment, demonstrating that rhizosphere processes tend to transport OPEs into the rhizosphere sediment. Most of the selected OPEs were not in equilibrium between water and sediment, and trend to retain in sediment. In addition, OPEs with relatively higher hydrophobicity had trend to retained in Myriophyllum aquaticum roots, whereas OPEs with lower hydrophobicity were more likely transported to shoots. In this study, octanol-water partition coefficient (K_OW) had significantly positive correlations with organic carbon-normalized soil-water partition coefficients (K_OC) and root-water concentration factors (RWCFs), but K_OW was negatively correlated with translocation factors (TFs). Moreover, the substituent types and initial levels of OPEs also have impacts on the plant uptake and accumulation. These observations will improve our understanding of the distribution and translocation of OPEs in aquatic environment.

Fluorescence turn-off sensing strategy based on Al-based MOF for selective detection of tricresyl phosphate

Tricresyl phosphate (TCP), a notable emerging pollutant with a high bioconcentration factor and biotoxicity, is a typical representative of aryl-organophosphorus flame retardants. The electrochemical and chromatographic technologies used in conventional TCP detection have a variety of drawbacks. Hence, it is crucial to suggest an easy, accurate, and selective method for detecting TCP. In this study, we presented a brand-new method based on NH₂-MIL-53(Al) nanoprobe for the direct luminescence assay of TCP. NH₂-MIL-53(Al) possessed an excellent crystal structure and superior optical qualities. Notably, the introduction of TCP caused a considerable dampening of the photoluminescence signal of the nanoprobe. The fluorescence response based on static quenching was verified by fluorescence lifetime decay curves. The thermodynamic analysis further concluded that TCP and nanoprobe spontaneously produced non-fluorescent complexes due to hydrophobic interaction. The quenching efficiency (F₀-F)/F₀ of the nanoprobe and the TCP concentration displayed good linearity in the scope of 0.3-3.0 μM (R² = 0.996), and the LOD was 0.058 μM under the ideal detection conditions. More significantly, the technique was effectively used to identify TCP in lake and tap water (RSD ≤5.79%), which provided a fresh perspective on how to recognize OPFRs in environmental water.

Source Identification of Organophosphate Esters through the Profiles in Proglacial and Ocean Sediments from Ny-Ålesund, the Arctic

Little is known about the sources and environmental behavior of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the Arctic, especially their transformation products. The present study unprecedentedly investigated both 16 tri-OPEs and 8 di-OPEs in proglacial and ocean sediments from Ny-Ålesund, the Arctic. Mean concentrations of tri-OPEs and di-OPEs in proglacial sediments were 487 and 341 pg/g dry weight (dw), respectively, which were significantly lower than those in ocean sediments (1692 and 525 pg/g dw). Ocean sediments might be simultaneously influenced by long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT), oceanic transport, and human activities, whereas proglacial sediments, since they are isolated from human settlements, may be dominantly affected by LRAT. Such source difference was evidenced by the contamination profile of OPEs: chlorinated tri-OPEs with high environmental persistence and high LRAT were dominant in proglacial sediments (66%); however, weakly environmentally persistent and highly hydrophobic aryl tri-OPEs were dominant in ocean sediments (47%), which were plausibly from local emission sources due to their low LRAT potential. Di-OPEs in proglacial and ocean sediments were dominated by groups of parent tri-OPEs with strong photodegradability, such as alkyl (75%) and aryl (58%). A higher mean molar ratio of di-OPE/tri-OPE in the proglacial sediment (14) than that in the ocean sediment (2.2) may be related to its higher photodegradation than that of the ocean sediment.

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of organophosphorus flame retardants and their degradation products in water and upper sediment of two urban rivers in Shenzhen, China

Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely used in various industrial manufacturing processes; thus, their environmental impact in agglomerated industrial areas is of great concern. In this study, seventeen kinds of OPFRs and five kinds of organophosphate diesters (Di-OPs) in water and upper sediment samples from two urban rivers in the agglomerated industrial area of Shenzhen city, China, were investigated. The results showed that the total concentrations of detectable OPFRs ranged from 3438.83 to 12,838.87 ng/L with an average of 6494.94 ng/L in water samples and from 47.16 to 524.46 ng/g (dry weight, dw) with an average of 181.48 ng/g dw in sediment. The values were higher than those in other rivers worldwide. Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is the predominant OPFRs in water and upper sediment, up to 10,664.23 ng/L in water and 414.12 ng/g dw in sediment. The total concentration of OPFRs of sediment samples in the Maozhou River was around twice as high as in the Guanlan River. The results indicated that the level of OPFRs was associated with the industrial activity intensity. Di-OPs exhibited lower concentrations than their parent compounds, and can be attributed to the degradation/metabolism of their parent compounds in the river. The sediment-water partition of OPFRs is significantly correlated with their log Kow values. Risk assessment revealed moderate ecological risks posed by OPFRs in water to aquatic organisms. The present study revealed the pollution status of OPFRs in rivers from agglomerated industrial and residential areas.

Spatiotemporal transitions of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in sediments from the Pearl River Delta, China

Recent regulations on the use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs, especially polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs) have led a sharp increase in the use of organophosphate esters (OPEs), which have become the subject of widespread environmental concern. To gain insights into their environmental transitions, we investigated the spatiotemporal trends and sources of 25 OPEs and 23 BFRs (21 PBDEs and two alternative BFRs) in sediments from the Pearl River Delta (PRD), the second economic/industrial region of China. Among them, PBDEs showed higher mean concentrations than OPEs and alt-BFRs in PRD sediments, a continual increase in most PRD areas, and positive correlations with most local socioeconomic parameters. The source analysis results indicated that all of these changes resulted from the substantial use/stock of PBDEs (especially deca-BDE) in this region, and BDE-209 displayed debromination in most sediments. OPEs demonstrated obvious increases in sediments from all major PRD rivers, especially those located in less-developed regions. This distribution might be related to the large-scale industry relocation from the central PRD area to its vicinities. Unexpectedly, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), an important deca-BDE substitute, presented considerable declines in the PRD sediments while several novel OPEs showed considerably high proportions, especially aryl-substituted OPEs, which merit further screening analysis.

Determination and environmental risk assessment of organophosphorus flame retardants in sediments of the South China Sea

As ubiquitous contaminants in the environment, organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) would eventually settle in marine sediment. In this study, concentrations, spatial distributions, and ecological risks of seven OPFRs in sediment samples of the South China Sea (SCS) were investigated for the first time. Total concentration of all OPFRs ranged from 2.5 to 32.3 ng/g dry weight (dw), in which the abundance of tri-cresyl phosphates (TCPs) was the highest. OPFRs in the SCS were at a medium level compared with those from other parts of the world. The nearshore ocean current, ship transportation, and riverine inputs might influence the spatial distributions of OPFRs. The total inventory of six OPFRs in sediment was estimated to be 202.8 tons (16.7×10⁴ km²). The hazard quotient (HQ) of OPFRs ranged from 0 to 3.2E-02, indicating the ignorable ecological risk of OPFRs in sediments of the SCS. This study provides insight into the occurrence of current-use OPFRs in the SCS which deserved long-term concern in the future due to their continuous terrigenous inputs.

Sub-chronic ecotoxicity of triphenyl phosphate to earthworms (Eisenia fetida) in artificial soil: Oxidative stress and DNA damage

As a flame retardant, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) is commonly added to various daily products. Due to its easy diffusion, TPHP pollution has become a global concern. Despite the wide focus on environmental risk, the sub-chronic ecotoxicity of TPHP in soil organisms remains unclear. In this study, the artificial soil exposure method was used to analyze the oxidative stress and DNA damage in earthworms with 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg/kg TPHP treatments through the response of reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes, malondialdehyde (MDA) and olive tail moment (OTM) at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Throughout the experimental period, the results showed that the ROS content in earthworms treated with 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg/kg TPHP treatments increased by 9.43-18.37 %, 6.07-25.73 %, 7.71-42.61 % and 8.22-46.70 %, respectively, compared to the control treatment. Meanwhile, the activities of antioxidant and detoxification enzymes in earthworms with all TPHP treatments were significantly activated after exposure for 7 and 14 days, and then inhibited at 21 and 28 days. Despite the protection of antioxidant enzymes and detoxification enzymes, MDA content in earthworms with the 20 mg/kg treatment still significantly increased at 7 and 14 days of exposure, as well as in the other three treatments. Compared to the control treatment, the obviously higher OTM values in earthworms with TPHP treatments possibly indicated a genotoxicity of TPHP in earthworms. Furthermore, the integrated biomarker response index (IBRv2) revealed that earthworms showed an obvious biochemical response TPHP-contaminated soil, which was strongly correlated with TPHP concentrations and exposure time. This study provides insights into the TPHP hazard in the soil environment and offers a reference to assess its environmental risk to soil ecosystems.

Organophosphate esters in agro-foods: Occurrence, sources and emerging challenges

Safety and sustainable agro-food production is important for food and nutrition security. Agro-foods safety is challenged by various emerging environmental contaminants. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been reported to occur in various agro-food items worldwide, which has resulted in increasing concerns for effects on health of humans and wildlife, including through agriculture. However, information on presence, sources and transfer routes of OPEs in agro-foods, and consequent health risks remains scant. This review critically evaluates available information on concentrations of OPEs in various agro-foods, and discusses potential sources of OPEs in agro-foods, which are closely related to the ambient agri-environment, agricultural inputs, and agro-foods processing. Some directions for future research are suggested. First, since food is an important exposure pathway to OPEs, systematic monitoring of concentrations of OPEs in various categories of agro-foods is recommended. Second, surveillance of concentrations and characteristics of OPEs in agro-foods and ambient agri-environments, agricultural inputs or processing in the agro-food chain is needed to obtain a more complete description of exposure and transmission behavior of OPEs in agro-foods. Third, future comprehensive studies of transmission, metabolism and accumulation of OPEs in animals or plants, are required. Finally, measures to control emissions of OPEs as sources to agriculture should be taken.

Occurrence and distribution of organophosphate flame retardants in seawater and sediment from coastal areas of the East China and Yellow Seas

Organophosphates (OPEs) are manmade organic pollutants that are widely used as flame retardants, plasticizers, and antifoaming and hydraulic agents. In this study, seven OPEs in seawater and sediment from the Yellow Sea and East China Sea were determined to study the distribution and diffusion behavior, and to evaluate the environmental risks. The ΣOPEs in the seawater and sediments ranged from below the method detection limit (<MDL) to 497.40 ng/L and from < MDL to 66.50 ng/g dw, respectively. Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), tris-(1, 3-Dichloro-2-Propyl) phosphate (TDCPP), and tri-meta-cresyl phosphate (TmCP) were the dominant OPEs in the seawater and sediments. OPEs were mainly distributed in coastal areas and the South Yellow Sea, indicating that they are mainly affected by land-based pollution and ocean currents. Fugacity analysis shows that tri-para-cresyl phosphate (TpCP) was in a state of equilibrium, while TDCPP, TnBP, and TmCP other OPEs tended to diffuse from sediment to water. The diffusion behavior of OPEs is mainly affected by their chemical properties. Hazard quotient (HQ) values of TmCP and TpCP in sediment samples were >1.0, indicating high ecological risks to aquatic organisms.

Terrigenous export and ocean currents' diffusion of organophosphorus flame retardants along China's adjacent seas

High demands for but strict regulatory measures on Organophosphorus Flame Retardants (OPFRs) have resulted in mainland China transitioning from the region that imports OPRFs to one that exports these substances. Simultaneously, large quantities of terrigenous OPFRs have been exported to adjacent seas by the major river systems, particularly the Yangtze River. This study examined the presence of ten OPFRs in China's adjacent seas. High levels of OPFRs were observed in seas south of mainland China, with Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) dominant. The terrigenous OPFRs were redistributed by the ocean surface currents, with OPFRs tending to accumulate in regions with lower current speed. The producers of OPFRs are mainly distributed along the Haihe, Yellow, and Yangtze river systems. The application of OPFRs to electric vehicle charging stations, charging connectors, and 5G infrastructure in the Chinese mainland will likely drive rapid growth in OPFR related industry in the future. The diffusion trend map of OPFR indicated that the Bohai Sea and the central northern Yellow Sea are at high risk of ecological damage in the spring. The offshore region of the north of the South China Sea tended to aggregate more OPFRs in summer. Regions of the OPFR aggregation effect were at a higher risk of ecological damage.

Bioaccumulation and translocation of organophosphate esters in a Mangrove Nature Reserve from the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Little is known about the distribution and bioaccumulation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in mangrove ecosystems. In this study, water, sediments, plants and animals were collected from Qi'ao Island Mangrove Nature Reserve to investigate the levels, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of OPEs. Concentrations of ΣOPEs in the mangrove plant Sonneratia apetala (an exotic species) were greater than those in Kandelia obovata (a native species). Translocation factors of OPEs in the two mangrove tree species were greater than 1, indicating that OPEs were mainly absorbed in aboveground tissues. Concentrations of OPEs in mangrove trees and animals were negatively correlated with their log K_ow, suggesting that accumulation of OPEs in mangrove biota was influenced by hydrophobicity. A significant difference for concentrations of ΣOPEs was found among the eight mangrove animal species. Concentrations of ΣOPEs in mangrove animals were related with lipid contents, feeding habits and K_ow of OPEs. Biota-sediment accumulation factor of OPEs was larger than 1, suggesting that bioaccumulation of OPEs occurred in mangrove animals. The targeted OPEs except isodecyl diphenyl phosphate were not biomagnified in mangrove animals. This study highlights bioaccumulation of OPEs in mangrove biota and suggests further concern about the ecological risk of OPEs to mangrove biota.

Human Exposure to Chlorinated Organophosphate Ester Flame Retardants and Plasticizers in an Industrial Area of Shenzhen, China

Human exposure to organophosphate esters (OPEs) is more pervasive in industrial areas manufacturing OPE-related products. OPE exposure is of great concern due to its associations with adverse health effects, while studies on OPE exposure in industrial districts are scarce. This study aimed to assess human exposure to OPEs in a typical industrial area producing large amounts of OPE-related products in Shenzhen, China. Tris (2-chloroethyl)-phosphate (TCEP), tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and other common OPEs were analyzed in urine (n = 30) and plasma (n = 21) samples. Moreover, we measured five OPE metabolites (mOPEs) in plasma samples (n = 21). The results show that TCPP and TCEP are dominant compounds, with moderate to high levels compared with those reported in urine and plasma samples from other regions. In addition, di-n-butyl phosphate (DnBP) and diethyl phosphite (DEP) were frequently detected in plasma samples and could be considered as biomarkers. Risk assessment revealed a moderate to high potential health risk from TCEP exposure. Our results provide basic data for human exposure to OPEs in industrial areas and call for the prevention and mitigation of industrial chlorinated OPE pollution.

A practical method to remove perfluorooctanoic acid from aqueous media using layer double hydride system: a prospect for environmental remediation

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an organic compound that is persistent and very toxic to living organisms and the environment. In this study, two kinds of Mg-Al-layered double hydroxides (namely LDH-1 and 2) were synthesized using hydrothermal and dry grinding methods and used to adsorb PFOA from aqueous solution. The kinetic study revealed that a pseudo-2nd order model was the best method for describing the kinetics of sorption, which could emphasize the chemical interaction between PFOAs and LDHs. Among the models tested, the Freundlich model was the best fit for the sorption isotherms. The removal rates of PFOA adsorption by LDH-1 and LDH-2 were 90% and 98.9%, respectively, in the lowest time compared with similar past studies using different adsorbents. The currently synthesized LDHs showed the least equilibrium time, without thermal treatment and the need for activation. The research bears prospects for removing PFOA from aqueous media, thereby demonstrating the potential of employing synthesized LDHs in a fixed-bed filter for the environmental remediation of PFOA-contaminated wastewater bodies.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Risk of Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Sediments from Jiulong River Estuary and Adjacent Western Taiwan Strait, China

Organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely prevalent in the environment and are of significant concern because of their potential toxicity to human health and wildlife. In this study, the concentration, frequency, spatial distribution, potential sources, and ecological risks of OPFRs in sediments from the Jiulong River estuary and the adjacent western Taiwan Strait were investigated. Concentrations of four of the five studied OPFRs were between <LOD and 36.6 ng/g. The distribution of all OPFRs, except 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), remained highly consistent with hydrological (salinity) trends. Furthermore, a significantly positive correlation between EHDPP and total concentrations suggested that it may be the dominant contaminant at both sites. Principal element analysis indicated multiple sources of OPFRs, which were categorized as emissions from road runoff and surface traffic, effects of atmospheric deposition and hydrologic conditions, and a combination of industrial and population effects. Ecological risk indicates that tris (chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and triphosphate ester (2,3-dibromopropyl) (TDBPP) have almost no risk, tris (clorisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) generally has low risk, while EHDPP has moderate risk with the highest value of 0.487 in the sediments from both sites. Meanwhile, TCPP and TCEP exhibit lower theoretical health risks but are still not negligible. Overall, this work provides data to support global pollutant studies and facilitate the implementation of pollutant control strategies.

Spatiotemporal distribution and mass loading of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in the Yellow River of China (Henan segment)

During three sampling periods in 2014, systematic investigations were conducted into contamination profiles of ten organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in both suspended particulate phase and water phase in the Yellow River (Henan Area). This research shows that OPFRs exist at lower concentrations in the suspended phase than in the water phase. The median concentration of 10 OPFRs (∑₁₀OPFRs) in the suspended particulate phase was 62.5 ng/g (fluctuating from ND to 6.17 × 10³ ng/g, dw), while their median concentration in the water phase was 109 ng/L (fluctuating from 35.6 to 469 ng/L). Among the selected 10 OPFRs, triethylphosphate (TEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) were the predominant compounds in the water phase (occupying 91.6% of the ∑₁₀OPFRs), while TCPP, TCEP, and tri-o-tolyl phosphate (o-TCP) were the most common in the suspended particulate phase, accounting for 90.1% of the ∑₁₀OPFRs. Across the three sampling periods, there was no significant seasonable variation for OPFRs either in the water phase or in the suspended particulate phase, except for TCEP and TCPP in the water phase. Compared with research findings relating to concentrations of OPFRs around China and abroad, the OPFRs of the Yellow River (Henan Area) in the water phase were at a moderate level. Suspended particles (SS) had a very important impact on the transportation of OPFRs in the studied area, with about 83.9% of ∑₁₀OPFRs inflow attributed to SS inflow and about 81.7% of ∑₁₀OPFRs outflow attributed to SS outflow. The total annual inflow and outflow of OPFRs were 7.72 × 10⁴ kg and 6.62 × 10⁴ kg in the studied area, respectively.

Seasonal variation, source identification, and risk assessment of organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers in surficial sediments from Liao River estuary wetland, China

Organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants and plasticizers in surficial sediments were collected in Liao River estuarine wetland during the dry, flood, and level periods to understand the seasonal variation, potential sources, and environmental risks. The concentrations of ∑₁₃OPEs ranged from 19.5 to 67.0 ng g^-1 dry weight (dw), with an average concentration of 30.6 ng g^-1 dw. OPEs pollution displayed a seasonal variation, the concentrations of OPEs in dry period > level period > flood period. Tributyl-n-phosphate was the predominant OPEs, which accounts for 29.7% of ∑₁₃OPEs. Principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization suggested that the pollution sources of OPEs also varied seasonally. The ecological risk of OPEs to aquatic organisms was low, and the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to human beings were also far below the acceptable level. 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate was the major compound causing ecological and non-carcinogenic risk, while tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate had the highest carcinogenic risk.

A review of environmental occurrence, analysis, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of organophosphate esters

The ban and restriction of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and major brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), due to their confirmed detrimental effects on wildlife and humans have paved the way for the wide application of organophosphate esters (OPEs). OPEs have been extensively used as alternative flame retardants, plasticizer, and antifoaming agents in various industrial and consumer products, which leads to an increase in production, usage, and discharge in the environment. We compile recent information on the production/usage and physicochemical properties of OPEs and discussed and compared the available sample treatment and analysis techniques of OPEs, including extraction, clean-up, and instrumental analysis. The occurrence of OPEs in sediment, aquatic biota, surface, and drinking water is documented. Toxicity, human exposure, and ecological risks of OPEs were summarized; toxicological data of several OPEs shows different adverse health effects on aquatic organisms and humans. Much attention was given to document evidence regarding the bioaccumulation and biomagnification potential of OPEs in aquatic organisms. Finally, identified research gaps and avenues for future studies are forwarded.

A review on the occurrence of organophosphate flame retardants in the aquatic environment in China and implications for risk assessment

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), used extensively as substitutes for polybrominated diphenyl ethers, are ubiquitous environmental contaminants. OPFR pollution in aquatic environments, the main sink of pollutants, has been studied extensively over the past decade. Here, we review the current knowledge on the consumption and applications of OPFRs, and on their ecotoxicity in aquatic environments worldwide. We also synthesize the available evidence on the occurrence of OPFRs in aquatic environments in China (wastewater treatment plant influent and effluent, surface water, sediment, aquatic biota, and drinking water). Across China, the measured concentrations of OPFRs differ by more than three orders of magnitude. Risk assessments based on these measurements indicate a low level of ecological risk from OPFRs in most aquatic environments in China, and a low risk to human health from drinking water and aquatic products. Finally, we identify gaps in the current knowledge and directions for further research on OPFRs in aquatic environments.

Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in the seawater and sediments of the Qinzhou Bay, Northern Beibu Gulf: Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks

The occurrence, distributions, and ecological risks of 11 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in the seawater and sediment samples from the Qinzhou Bay. The Σ₁₁OPFRs in the surface seawater and sediments ranged from 150 to 885 ng/L and from <the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 32.2 ng/g dw, respectively, with high levels of OPFRs in the industrialized and port areas. Tris (2-chloro-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP) were the dominant OPFRs in the surface seawater and sediments. The Σ₁₁OPFRs concentrations in the sediment core ranged 1.2-18.6 ng/g dw and the vertical trends showed a recent increase of OPFRs emissions, especially for TNBP and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP). Risk assessment revealed that individual OPFR could pose low to medium ecological risks, but the risk from the mixture of OPFRs on aquatic organisms requires more attention.

Occurrence and risk evaluation of organophosphorus flame retardants in two urban rivers in Yangtze River Delta

The occurrence and profiles of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in the Huangpu and Shiwuli Rivers, two urban rivers in the Yangtze River Delta, China. The total concentrations of OPEs were found at part-per-trillion ranges, with average concentrations that ranged from 424 to 1.84 × 10³ ng L^-1 for Huangpu River and 221 to 1.84 × 10³ ng L^-1 for Shiwuli River. Three chlorinated OPFRs including tris(chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), and tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) were the most abundant compounds among the investigated OPFRs, accounting for 90.6-99.8% of total concentrations. In Huangpu River, the OPFR concentrations were significantly higher in the dry season than in the wet season which indicates obvious seasonal variation. Chlorinated OPFR concentrations differed significantly between upstream and downstream reaches of the Shiwuli River, as the result of geographic features and wastewater discharge. Estimated risk was calculated to compare predicted no-effect concentrations (PNEC) to observed concentrations of OPFRs. The results indicated no significant acute adverse effects of OPFRs in the two urban rivers for fish, daphnia, or algae.

Legacy and novel flame retardants in water and sediment from highly industrialized bays of Korea: Occurrence, source tracking, decadal time trend, and ecological risks

Legacy and novel flame retardants (FRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel BFRs, and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were measured in water and sediment collected from highly industrialized bays of Korea. Predominant compounds in sediment were BDE 209, DBDPE, and BTBPE for BFRs, and TCPP and TBOEP for OPFRs, respectively. Higher alternative FR concentrations were observed compared to those reported for previous studies. The highest BFR concentrations were found in locations close to industrial complexes, while the OPFR concentrations were highest in locations close to domestic regions and a wastewater treatment plant. Different contamination sources were observed for BFRs and OPFRs. The ratio of DBDPE/BDE 209 in sediment ranged from 0.84 to 28, indicating a shift in consumption of BFRs. A significant decline in PBDEs suggests the effectiveness of domestic and global regulations. Despite this, sedimentary PBDE concentrations may pose adverse health risks to benthic organisms and humans.

Distribution, source apportionment and ecological risks of organophosphate esters in surface sediments from the Liao River, Northeast China

A total of 24 surface sediment samples were collected from Liao River, Northeast China. The concentration, spatial distribution, potential source, and ecological risk of 13 organophosphate esters (OPEs) flame retardants and plasticizers were analyzed. The total concentrations of OPEs varied considerably, ranging from 19.7 to 234 ng g^-1 dry weight (dw), with the mean concentrations of 64.2 ± 52.2 ng g^-1 dw. The OPEs pollution was increasing from upstream to downstream of Liao River. Compared with other sediments of rivers and lakes all over the world, Liao River has been seriously contaminated by OPEs, especially tributyl phosphate (TNBP) and tri-butoxyethyl phosphate (TBOEP). TNBP was the most abundant OPEs, followed by TBOEP and triphenylphosphine oxide. Their mean relative contributions were 26.3%, 12.4% and 11.6%, respectively. Positive matrix factorization indicated that OPEs in sediments from Liao River might be derived from plastic, textile, and polyurethane foam, anti-foam agent, hydraulic fluids, and coatings, indoor release, and chemical process emission. The risk of potential adverse effects of each individually OPEs on aquatic organisms were low (risk quotient less than 0.1). 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate was the main substance causing risk.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and alternative halogenated flame retardants in mangrove plants from Futian National Nature Reserve of Shenzhen City, South China

Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are ubiquitous in the environment, but little information is available about the bioaccumulation of HFRs in mangrove plants. In this study, three mangrove plant species were collected from Futian National Nature Reserve of Shenzhen City, South China to investigate the bioaccumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and several alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs), including decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), tetrabromop-xylene (pTBX), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) and dechlorane plus (DP). The mean concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE, pTBX, PBT, PBEB, HBB and DP in mangrove plant species were 2010, 1870, 36.2, 18.7, 40.1, 17.8, 9.68 and 120 pg g^-1 dry weight, respectively. PBDEs were the dominant HFRs in mangrove plant tissues, followed by DBDPE. The relative abundance of BDE 209 in three mangrove plant tissues were much lower than those in sediments. Significant negative relationships between log root bioaccumulation factors and log K_ow, and between log TF_r-s (from root to stem) and log K_ow were observed, indicating that HFRs with low hydrophobicity were easily absorbed by mangrove roots and stems. A positive correlation between log TF_s-l (from stem to leaf) and log K_ow were found, suggesting that air-leaf exchange may occur in mangrove plants. This study highlights the uptake of HFRs by mangrove plants, which can be used as remediation for HFRs contamination in the environment.

Occurrence, composition and biological risk of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in water of the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Since the production of brominated flame retardants has been gradually phased out, organophosphate esters (OPEs) are increasingly used as the substitutes. Given their toxicity and water solubility, OPEs may jeopardize the aquatic environment and organisms. Here, we examined the concentration, composition, and biological risk of OPEs in the water collected from the eight major waterways in the Pearl River Delta, a highly industrialized region in China. We found a widespread occurrence of OPEs in this region (∑₉OPEs: 134 to 442 ng L^-1), dominated by TCPP, TCEP, and TnBP. Halogenated OPEs were dominant over alkyl and aromatic OPEs. The biological risk of OPEs, mainly contributed by TPhP and TnBP, was low (RQ < 0.1). The contamination level of OPEs in the Pearl River Delta was likely associated with the degree of industrial activities. Although OPEs posed low risk to aquatic organisms, more attention should be paid to some OPEs in the future, such as TnBP, due to the high usage and toxicity. Considering the concentrations of OPEs worldwide and their usage, OPEs may become the emerging pollutants of global concern in the next decade.

Selective pressurized extraction as single-step extraction and clean-up for the determination of organophosphate ester flame retardant in Citrus aurantium leaves by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

In this work, an analytical method has been developed and validated for the determination of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in urban ornamental tree leaves. OPEs are flame retardants and plasticizers which are classified as health and environmental hazards substances. Their presence in urban air has been previously described. The method proposed in this work would allow the use of urban tree leaves as simple, cheap, and widely distributed in urban areas alternative to the existing active and passive sampler for sample collection. The method was based on sample treatment by selective pressurized liquid extraction (SPLE) and determination by gas chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry detector. After the optimization of the extraction solvent, the key parameters applied to SPLE (clean sorbent and sorbent amount applied for the sample clean-up, temperature, extraction cycles, and time) were optimized using a Box-Behnken response surface design. The method achieves high recoveries (higher than 60% for most of the target compounds), accuracies between 70 and 109%, and method detection and quantification limits ranged 0.05-4.96 ng/g dw (dry weight) and 0.15-14.4 ng/g dw, respectively. The method allowed the proper biomonitoring of OPE in tree leaves. Concentrations measured in analyzed samples were from 47.5 to 5477 ng/g dw (TEP). The most frequently detected compounds were triethyl phosphate tri-n-butyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate, while tris(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate was not detected in the analyzed samples. The proposed analytical method constitutes a starting point for the use of ornamental urban trees as passive sampler for the evaluation of OPE as air pollutants. Graphical Abstract.

Occurrence and distribution of organophosphate esters in sediment from northern Chinese coastal waters

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are used as flame retardants and plasticizers in many consumer products. Owing to OPEs' toxicity, exposure of organisms in aquatic ecosystems is a concern. Information that pertains to the occurrence and distribution of OPEs in marine aquatic environment, however, is scarce. In this study, concentrations and profiles of 14 OPE triesters were determined in sediment collected in coastal waters (Bohai Sea and East China Sea) of northern China. The total concentrations of OPEs (ΣOPEs) in surface sediment were in the range of 1.76-49.9 (median: 9.13) ng/g dry weight (dw), which were comparable to or lower than the range of concentrations reported for surface sediments worldwide. Tris(2-chloro-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tri-isobutyl phosphate (TiBP), and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) were the predominant OPEs found in surface sediment, collectively accounting for 81% of the total concentrations. ΣOPE concentrations in sediment core (range: 8.58-169, median: 31.6 ng/g dw) were generally higher than those found in surface sediment. The vertical distribution of OPEs in sediment core showed a gradual increasing trend in concentrations during the past decade.

Contamination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in watershed sediments and plants adjacent to e-waste sites

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are one of the persistent toxic organic pollutants in watersheds near electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) sites (EWS). Spatial redistribution, translocation and bioaccumulation of PBDEs in natural sediment-plant ecosystems, however, are still unclear. The contamination and distribution of PBDEs in core sediments and wetland plants from two EWS and two mangrove forest sites (MFS) were investigated. The eight PBDE congeners were all detected in plant tissue and sediment samples, indicating PBDE contamination was common and severe, and their spatial variations were significant. Although sediments from EWS had higher PBDE concentrations than those in MFS, with an extremely high value of 36392 ± 5992 ng g^-1 dw, mangroves could be the sink of PBDEs, as high concentrations (327 ± 48 ng g^-1 dw) were also detected in mangrove sediments. The historical usage of PBDEs was reflected by their distribution in mangrove sediment core but not so in e-waste sediment core. PBDEs were taken up and accumulated in six wetland plants, with more accumulation in mangrove plants. These results demonstrated that PBDEs were not only contaminated in sediments adjacent to e-waste sites but also plant tissues. PBDEs could enter other environments via plant littering and/or herbivorous processes that must not be neglected.

Halogenated flame retardants in mangrove sediments from the Pearl River Estuary, South China: Comparison with historical data and correlation with microbial community

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) and dechlorane plus (DP) were measured in sediments collected from three mangrove wetlands of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in South China. This study aims to investigate the distribution of these halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and the correlations between HFRs and microbial community structure in mangrove sediments. Concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE, TBBPA, HBCDD and DP in mangrove sediments ranged from 6.97 to 216.1, 3.70-26.0, 0.02-0.73, 0.02-37.5, 0.44-127.5 and 0.07-2.23 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Higher levels of PBDEs, BTBPE, HBCDD and DP were observed in sediments from Futian mangrove wetland of Shenzhen, the only nature reserve located in the downtown of China. The highest concentration of TBBPA found in mangrove sediments from Guangzhou was proximate to a ferry terminal and a dockyard where TBBPA is widely used in the coatings. PBDEs were the predominant HFRs in mangrove sediments, with an average contribution of 63.0%. Mangrove sediments from Guangzhou and Zhuhai showed an enrichment of (-)-α-HBCDD, (-)-β-HBCDD and (-)-γ-HBCDD. Concentrations of HFRs in mangrove sediments from Guangzhou increased significantly from 2012 to 2015, which was probably due to the establishment and rapid development of Nansha Free Trade Zone of Guangzhou. Redundancy analysis showed that HFRs may cause a shift of microbial community structure in mangrove sediments and the variations were significantly correlated with TBBPA, syn-DP and BTBPE.

A Review of a Class of Emerging Contaminants: The Classification, Distribution, Intensity of Consumption, Synthesis Routes, Environmental Effects and Expectation of Pollution Abatement to Organophosphate Flame Retardants (OPFRs)

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have been detected in various environmental matrices and have been identified as emerging contaminants (EC). Given the adverse influence of OPFRs, many researchers have focused on the absorption, bioaccumulation, metabolism, and internal exposure processes of OPFRs in animals and humans. This paper first reviews the evolution of various types of flame retardants (FRs) and the environmental pollution of OPFRs, the different absorption pathways of OPFRs by animals and humans (such as inhalation, ingestion, skin absorption and absorption), and then summarizes the environmental impacts of OPFRs, including their biological toxicity, bioaccumulation, persistence, migration, endocrine disruption and carcinogenicity. Based on limited available data and results, this study also summarizes the bioaccumulation and biomagnification potential of OPFRs in different types of biological and food nets. In addition, a new governance idea for the replacement of existing OPFRs from the source is proposed, seeking environmentally friendly alternatives to OPFRs in order to provide new ideas and theoretical guidance for the removal of OPFRs.

Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate treatment induces DNA damage, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in murine RAW264.7 macrophages

Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) is the most widely used organophosphorus flame retardant, which is now used instead of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). TDCPP has frequently been detected in inorganic environmental matrices, such as soil, water and air as well as biota. In vitro effects of TDCPP on cells had not been previously elucidated. Therefore, in the present study, cytotoxicity, DNA damage, cell cycle distribution, apoptosis caused by TDCPP was studied in RAW264.7 macrophage cells. TDCPP reduced viability of RAW264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner and caused damage to DNA that was detected by use of the comet assay and caused up-regulation of the level of γ-H2AX. TDCPP increased the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in RAW264.7 cells up to 1.44-fold compared to the control group at 12 hr. Percentages of cells in G1 and G2 phases of the cell cycle were dose-dependently greater in cells exposed to TDCPP. TDCPP significantly down-regulated expression of CDK-4, Cyclin D1, Cyclin B1, CDC-2, which are regulators of G1 and G2 phases of the cell cycle. These results demonstrated that TDCPP is cytotoxic and damages DNA in RAW264.7 cells, which resulted in arrest of the cell cycle at G1 and G2 phases and resulted in apoptosis, suggest the necessity to evaluate the effects of TDCPP on the immune system at the cellular level.

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs): A review on analytical methods and occurrence in wastewater and aquatic environment

Nowadays, there is an increasing concern for organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) due to high production and use following the phase out and stringent regulation in the use of brominated flame retardants. OPFRs represent a group of compounds with a wide range in their polarity, solubility and persistence. OPFRs are widely used as flame retardants in various consumer products such as textiles, electronics, industrial materials and furniture to prevent the risk of fire. They are also utilized as plasticizers, antifoaming or anti-wear agents in lacquers, hydraulic fluids and floor polishing agents. The present review outlines the current state of knowledge regardimg the analytical methodology applied for their determination in wastewater and aquatic environment as well as their occurrence in water, wastewater, sediments and sludge. Knowledge gaps and future perspectives have been identified, which include the elucidation of sources, pathways and fate of OPFRs in aquatic environment and possible risks.

Occurrence, distribution and behavior of emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in a Mediterranean wetland protected area

The analysis of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and organophosphate flame retardants (PFRs) in the different environmental compartments of a characteristic coastal wetland, the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain), is required for understanding the transport, accumulation and fate of these pollutants in an area under high anthropogenic pressure. Samples included 13 wastewater treatment plant influents, 13 effluents, 12 surface water, 19 sediment samples and 10 fish individuals from the Albufera Natural Park and the surrounding area. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were at the highest concentrations in water, 330.2 ng L^-1 and 47.8 ng L^-1, respectively. In fish and sediment PFOS was also the most detected while perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was in all types of water. Higher levels of target compounds (mainly PFASs) in wastewater effluents compared to influent suggested both, formation from precursors during treatment and poor removal efficiency. Mean levels of PFOS in water and fish were higher than the environmental quality standards (EQS) established by the European Union Directive 2013/39/EU. The influence of the metropolitan area of Valencia and its surrounding industrial belt could explain the significantly higher levels reported in the northern part (influenced by the Turia River).

Accelerated solvent extraction coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for simultaneous determination of 11 organophosphorus flame retardants in aquatic products

BACKGROUND

A new method based on accelerated solvent extraction was developed for the extraction and determination of 11 organophosphorus flame retardants by using a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry technique.

RESULTS

After optimization of the extraction temperature (80 °C), the extraction solvent (n-hexane), the flush volume (40%) and the static extraction time (4 min), all 11 organophosphorus flame retardants illustrated good linearities (R > 0.999). The limits of detection of the method ranged from 0.016 to 26.58 µg kg^-1 in the different matrices. The recoveries were 90.4-111.2% with relative standard deviations 0.21-5.3% for the various aquatic products.

CONCLUSION

The proposed method was applied successfully to detect 11 organophosphorus flame retardants in aquatic products, including grass carp, ribbon fish, mud fish, common eel, shrimp and frog. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Partition and source identification of organophosphate esters in the water and sediment of Taihu Lake, China

Taihu Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China, and has been heavily polluted by surrounding industrial activities. This study aimed to investigate the sources of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in Taihu Lake, and their partitioning behaviors between sediment and water. The total concentrations of the eleven target OPEs (∑OPEs) in the water and sediment of Taihu Lake were 166-1530 ng/L and 2.82-47.5 ng/g dw, respectively. The ∑OPEs in both water and sediment generally decreased from northwest to southeast. Extremely high level of ∑OPEs (1410-15,300 ng/L) was found in the flow-in rivers passing through the OPE manufacturing regions in Yixing. In both water and sediment, tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate and tris(chloroethyl) phosphate were the predominant OPEs. The sediment-water partitioning coefficients, log K_oc, of OPEs were calculated based on paired sediment and water samples, and they displayed strong correlation with their log K_ow (octanol-water), suggesting that their partition was dominated by hydrophobic interaction. Principle component analysis indicated that OPE manufacturing in Yixing was an important point source of OPEs, especially of TCIPP in Taihu Lake. Many OPE-related industries, such as electronic, textile, machine and plastic industries around Taihu Lake also made contributions to OPEs in the Lake.

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in water and sediment: Occurrence, distribution, and hotspots of contamination of Lake Shihwa, Korea

Contamination by organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) is an emerging concern in aquatic environments. Concentrations of 18 OPFRs were measured in water and sediments collected from the artificial Lake Shihwa. OPFR concentrations in sediments measured in this study were the highest reported worldwide, implying severe OPFR contamination. The highest concentrations of OPFRs were found in creeks taken near industrial complexes, and OPFR concentrations decreased with increasing distance from creeks to inshore or offshore lake waters. On-going OPFR contamination by wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharge was evidenced by the clear decrease in OPFRs in water samples collected moving away from WWTP outfall. TBEP and TEP were dominant in water samples, while TDCPP and TCPP were dominant in sediment samples. Differences in contamination profiles with sample matrices are likely due to hydrophobicity of individual OPFRs. Non-parametric multidimensional scaling ordination showed that OPFR contamination was affected by pollution inflow and proximity to industrial complexes.

Assessing bioaccessibility and bioavailability of chlorinated organophosphorus flame retardants in sediments

The distribution of chlorinated organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in sediments has been well documented, but the study about their bioavailability remains lacking. This study investigated the applicability of solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber and Tenax extraction to predict the bioavailability of two chlorinated OPFRs: tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate and tri(1,3-dichloro-2-isopropyl) phosphate, in sediments. Our results showed that both SPME fiber and Tenax extracted concentrations correlated significantly with the measured concentrations in the aquatic worm (Lumbriculus variegatus). We also measured the Tenax extracted concentrations at 6 and 24 h, and a strong linear relationship between these two time durations was found. In addition, the 6-h Tenax extracted concentrations also significantly correlated with the SPME fiber extracted concentrations, and the Tenax extracted concentrations were much higher than the SPME fiber extracted concentrations. These results demonstrate the efficiency of SPME and Tenax extraction methods to predict the bioavailability of chlorinated OPFRs in sediments, and it was found that the Tenax extraction is more promising than the SPME extraction.
