Performance evaluation of typical flocculants for efficient harvesting of Chlorella sorokiniana under different carbon application modes

In this study, the growth characteristics of microalgae cultured with different carbon sources were analyzed, and the flocculation characteristics under the influence of carbon sources were evaluated using three typical flocculants. The results showed that the organic carbon sources could significantly increase the content of extracellular proteins in microalgae. Specifically, the extracellular protein concentrations of microalgae cultured with pure BG-11, ethanol, sodium acetate and glucose were 18.2 29.2, 97.3, and 34.7 mg/g, respectively. During the flocculation process, microalgae cultured with sodium acetate exhibited a weak response to the flocculant because of excessive extracellular proteins inhibited flocculation. In addition, the flocculation efficiency was also less than 50.0% cultured with sodium acetate in all pH test ranges when alum and chitosan were used as flocculants. It could be inferred that the flocculant initially happened to charge neutralization with the negatively charged proteins in the solution and then bridged the charges with the microalgae. These findings provide insights into the effects of different carbon sources on microalgal flocculation, promising organic integration of microalgae wastewater treatment and harvesting.

Advances in understanding and mitigating Atrazine's environmental and health impact: A comprehensive review

Atrazine is a widely used herbicide in agriculture, and it has garnered significant attention because of its potential risks to the environment and human health. The extensive utilization of atrazine, alongside its persistence in water and soil, underscores the critical need to develop safe and efficient removal strategies. This comprehensive review aims to spotlight atrazine's potential impact on ecosystems and public health, particularly its enduring presence in soil, water, and plants. As a known toxic endocrine disruptor, atrazine poses environmental and health risks. The review navigates through innovative removal techniques across soil and water environments, elucidating microbial degradation, phytoremediation, and advanced methodologies such as electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) and photocatalysis. The review notably emphasizes the complex process of atrazine degradation and ongoing scientific efforts to address this, recognizing its potential risks to both the environment and human health.

Physiological and transcriptomic analysis reveals the toxicological mechanisms of polystyrene micro- and nano-plastics in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

With the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment, the toxicity of micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) to microalgae has attracted increasing attention. However, the underlying toxic mechanisms of MNPs remain to be elucidated. In this study, we synthesized micro- and nano-scale of polystyrene MNPs (PS MNPs) to investigate their toxicity and toxic mechanisms in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. We found that PS MNPs significantly inhibit the production of photosynthetic pigments and increase soluble protein content. The detailed analysis of results shows that both materials affect photosynthetic efficiency by damaging the donor side, reaction center, and electron transfer of photosystem II. Moreover, compared to PS MPs, PS NPs have a greater negative impact on algal cells. Analyzing the transcriptome of cells suggests that the most sensitive metabolic pathways in response to PS MNPs involve oxidative phosphorylation, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and photosynthesis. Especially, genes related to photosynthesis and oxidative phosphorylation showed significant changes in expression after exposure to PS MNPs. This study provided molecular-level insights into the toxic mechanisms of PS MNPs on microalgae.

Sensitivity and antioxidant response of forest species seedlings to the atrazine under simulated conditions of subsurface water contamination

Atrazine is an herbicide with a high soil leaching capacity, contaminating subsurface water sources. Once the water table is contaminated, riparian species can be exposed to atrazine. In this way, understanding the impacts of this exposure must be evaluated for planning strategies that minimize the effects of this herbicide on native forest species. We aimed to evaluate forest species' sensitivity and antioxidant response to exposure to subsurface waters contaminated with atrazine, as well the dissipation this herbicide. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design, with three replications and one plant per experimental unit. The treatments were arranged in a 2 × 10 factorial. The first factor corresponded to the presence or absence (control) of the atrazine in the subsurface water. The second factor comprised 10 forest species: Amburana cearensis, Anadenanthera macrocarpa, Bauhinia cheilantha, Enterolobium contortisiliquum, Hymenaea courbaril, Libidibia ferrea, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, Mimosa tenuiflora, Myracrodruon urundeuva, and Tabebuia aurea. The forest species studied showed different sensitivity levels to atrazine in subsurface water. A. cearensis and B. cheilantha species do not have efficient antioxidant systems to prevent severe oxidative damage. The species A. macrocarpa, E. contortisiliquum, L. ferrea, and M. caesalpiniifolia are moderately affected by atrazine. H. courbaril, M. urundeuva, and T. aurea showed greater tolerance to atrazine due to the action of the antioxidant system of these species, avoiding membrane degradation events linked to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Among the forest species, H. courbaril has the most significant remedial potential due to its greater tolerance and reduced atrazine concentrations in the soil.

Unveiling the hidden risks: Pesticide residues in aquaculture systems

The present study systematically assessed the presence and ecological risks of 79 pesticides in various aquaculture systems, namely pond aquaculture (PA), greenhouse aquaculture (GA), and raceway aquaculture (RA) at different aquaculture stages, along with evaluating the pesticide removal of four tailwater treatment systems. Sixteen herbicides and two fungicides were identified, with the total concentrations ranging from 8.33 ng/L to 3248.45 ng/L. The PA system demonstrated significantly higher concentrations (p < 0.05) and a wider range of pesticide residues compared to the GA and RA systems. Prometryn, simetryn, atrazine, and thifluzamide were found to be the predominant pesticides across all three aquaculture modes, suggesting their significance as pollutants that warrant monitoring. Additionally, the findings indicated that the early aquaculture stage exhibits the highest levels of pesticide concentration, underscoring the importance of heightened monitoring and regulatory interventions during this phase. Furthermore, among the four tailwater treatment systems analyzed, the recirculating tailwater treatment system exhibited the highest efficacy in pesticide removal. A comprehensive risk assessment revealed minimal ecological risks in both the aquaculture and tailwater environments. However, the pesticide mixtures present high risks to algae and low to medium risks to aquatic invertebrates and fish, particularly during the early stages of aquaculture. Simetryn and prometryn were identified as high-risk pesticides. Based on the prioritization index, simetryn, prometryn, diuron, and ametryn are recommended for prioritization in risk assessment. This study offers valuable data for pesticide control and serves as a reference for the establishment of a standardized pesticide monitoring and management system at various stages of aquaculture.

Alleviating binary toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics and atrazine to Chlorella vulgaris through humic acid interaction: Long-term toxicity using environmentally relevant concentrations

In this study, microalgae Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) were simultaneously exposed to environmental concentrations of amino-functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NH2; 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 mg/L) and the world's second most used pesticide, the herbicide atrazine (ATZ; 10 μg/L), in the absence and presence of humic acid (HA; 1 mg/L) for 21 days. Due to the low concentrations of PS-NH2, the majority of them could not cause a significant difference in the end-points of biomass, chlorophylls a and b, total antioxidant, total protein, and superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde compared to the control group (p > 0.05). On the other hand, by adding ATZ to the PS-NH2, all the mentioned end-point values showed a considerable difference from the control (p < 0.05). The exposure of PS-NH2+ATZ treatments to the HA could remarkably reduce their toxicity, additionally, HA was able to decrease the changes in the expression of genes related to oxidative stress (e.g., superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, and catalase) in the C. vulgaris in the most toxic treatment group (e.g., PS-NH2+ATZ). The synergistic toxicity of the PS-NH2+ATZ group could be due to their enhanced bioavailability for algal cells. Nevertheless, the toxicity alleviation in the PS-NH2+ATZ treatment group after the addition of HA could be due to the eco-corona formation, and changes in their zeta potential from positive to negative value, which would increase their electrostatic repulsion with the C. vulgaris cells, in such a way that HA also caused a decrease in the formation of C. vulgaris-NPs hetero-aggregates. This research underscores the complex interplay between PS-NH2, ATZ, and HA in aquatic environments and their collective impact on microalgal communities.

Harmony in detoxification: Microalgae unleashing the potential of lignocellulosic pretreatment wastewater for resource utilization

Lignocellulosic biomass is a pivotal renewable resource in biorefinery process, requiring pretreatment, primarily chemical pretreatment, for effective depolymerization and subsequent transformation. This process yields solid residue for saccharification and lignocellulosic pretreatment wastewater (LPW), which comprises sugars and inhibitors such as phenols and furans. This study explored the microalgal capacity to treat LPW, focusing on two key hydrolysate inhibitors: furfural and vanillin, which impact the growth of six green microalgae. Chlorella sorokiniana exhibited higher tolerance to furfural and vanillin. However, both inhibitors hindered the growth of C. sorokiniana and disrupted algal photosynthetic system, with vanillin displaying superior inhibition. A synergistic inhibitory effect (Q < 0.85) was observed with furfural and vanillin on algal growth. Furfural transformation to low-toxic furfuryl alcohol was rapid, yet the addition of vanillin hindered this process. Vanillin stimulated carbohydrate accumulation, with 50.48 % observed in the 0.1 g/L furfural + 0.1 g/L vanillin group. Additionally, vanillin enhanced the accumulation of C16: 0 and C18: 2, reaching 21.71 % and 40.36 %, respectively, with 0.1 g/L vanillin. This study proposed a microalgae-based detoxification and resource utilization approach for LPW, enhancing the comprehensive utilization of lignocellulosic components. The observed biomass modifications also suggested potential applications for biofuel production, contributing to the evolving landscape of sustainable biorefinery processes.

Presence of humic acid in the environment holds promise as a potential mitigating factor for the joint toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics and herbicide atrazine to Chlorella vulgaris: 96-H acute toxicity

Increasing amounts of amino-functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NH2) are entering aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns. Hence, this study investigated 96-h acute toxicity of PS-NH2 and its combination with the pesticide atrazine (ATZ) in the absence/presence of humic acid (HA) on the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris). Results showed that both PS-NH2 and PS-NH2+ATZ reduced algal growth, photosynthetic pigments, protein content, and antioxidant capacity, while increasing enzymatic activities. Gene expression related to oxidative stress was altered in C. vulgaris exposed to these treatments. Morphological and intracellular changes were also observed. The combined toxicity of PS-NH2+ATZ demonstrated a synergistic effect, but the addition of environmentally relevant concentration of HA significantly alleviated its toxicity to C. vulgaris, indicating an antagonistic effect due to the emergence of an eco-corona, and entrapment and sedimentation of PS-NH2+ATZ particles by HA. This study firstly highlights the role of HA in mitigating the toxicity of PS-NH2 when combined with other harmful compounds, enhancing our understanding of HA's presence in the environment.

Discovery of two novel bioactive algicidal substances from Brevibacillus sp. via metabolomics profiling and back-validation

Identifying potent bacterial algicidal agents is essential for the development of effective, safe, and economically viable algaecides. Challenges in isolating and purifying these substances from complex secretions have impeded progress in this field. Metabolomics profiling, an efficient strategy for identifying metabolites, was pioneered in identifying bacterial algicidal substances in this study. Extracellular secretions from different generations of the algicidal bacterium Brevibacillus sp. were isolated for comprehensive analysis. Specifically, a higher algicidal efficacy was observed in the secretion from Generation 3 (G3) of Brevibacillus sp. compared to Generation 1 (G1). Subsequent metabolomics profiling comparing G3 and 1 revealed 83 significantly up-regulated metabolites, of which 9 were identified as potential algicidal candidates. Back-validation highlighted the potency of 4-acetamidobutanoic acid (4-ABC) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQL), which exhibited robust algicidal activity with 3d-EC50 values of 6.40 mg/L and 92.90 µg/L, respectively. These substances disrupted photosynthetic activity in M. aeruginosa by ceasing electron transfer in PSⅡ, like the impact exerted by Brevibacillus sp. secretion. These findings confirmed that 4-ABC and 8-HQL were the main algicidal components derived from Brevibacillus sp.. Thus, this study presents a streamlined strategy for identifying bacterial algicidal substances and unveils two novel and highly active algicidal substances. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) pose significant environmental problems and health effects to humans and other organisms. The increasing frequency of HCBs has emerged as a pressing global concern. Bacterial-derived algicidal substances are expected to serve as effective, safe, and economically viable algaecides against HCBs. This study presents a streamlined strategy for identifying bacterial algicidal substances and unveils two novel substances (4-ABC and 8-HQL). These two substances demonstrate remarkable algicidal activity and disrupt the photosynthetic system in M. aeruginosa. They hold potential as prospective algaecides for addressing HCBs.

Advancing sustainable seawater disinfection: Enhanced inactivation and mechanism of pulsed UV-LEDs irradiation on Tetraselmis sp

Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs), as a novel ultraviolet light source with flexible pulse mode, has gained significant attention for applications in water disinfection and food sterilization. This study investigated the comparative inactivation efficiency of Tetraselmis sp. with continuous and pulsed UV-LEDs irradiation, exploring different wavelengths, duty rates and pulse frequencies. The results reveal a significant enhancement in inactivation efficiency (p < 0.05) under pulsed conditions even at the same UV dose, with inactivation efficiency increasing as duty rate or pulse frequency decreases. The optimal conditions for achieving peak inactivation efficacy are identified as a duty rate of 50% and a pulse frequency of 5 Hz. Within this parameter space, pulsed irradiation leads to a remarkable 1.7-fold increase in inactivation efficiency at UV265 nm and a 1.5-fold increase at UV285 nm compared to continuous irradiation, respectively. Additionally, the disruptive impacts on photosynthetic performance are more pronounced with pulsed irradiation, particularly at the 5 Hz pulse frequency. In shed of these findings, the application of pulsed UV-LEDs irradiation emerges as a promising alternative to the conventional continuous UV disinfection methods in the area of seawater disinfection, offering higher disinfection efficacy and energy consumption.

Responses in Plant Growth and Root Exudates of Pistia stratiotes under Zn and Cu Stress

At present, the situation regarding heavy metal pollution in aquatic environments is becoming more and more serious. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals in aquatic plants causes obvious phytotoxicity, which can also induce secondary pollution in the aquatic environment. Zinc and copper, as indispensable elements for plant growth, are also prominent heavy metals in water pollution in China, and their concentrations play a crucial role in plant growth. In this study, we investigated the response of Pistia stratiotes (P. stratiotes) to different concentrations of Zn and Cu, and the results showed that plant growth and photosynthesis were inhibited under both Zn (1, 2, 4, and 8 mg/L) and Cu (0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1 mg/L) stresses. The relative growth rates of P. stratiotes under 8 mg/L Zn or 1 mg/L Cu stress were 6.33% and 6.90%, which were much lower than those in the control group (10.86%). Meanwhile, Zn and Cu stress caused insignificant change in the relative water contents of plants. The decrease in phlorophyll fluorescence parameters and chlorophyll contents suggested the significant photoinhibition of Zn and Cu stress. Chemical analysis of plant root exudates showed that the root secretion species obtained by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) mainly included amino acids, alkanes, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, and more. Compared with the control group, the influence of Zn or Cu on the reduction in relative amounts of exudates was greater than that on the increase. The results of this study provide important data for the utilization of P. stratiotes in heavy metal-polluted water environments.

Biological-based techniques for real-time water-quality studies: Assessment of non-invasive (swimming consistency and respiration) and toxicity (antioxidants) biomarkers of zebrafish

Swimming consistency and respiration of fish are recognized as the non-invasive stress biomarkers. Their alterations could directly indicate the presence of pollutants in the water ecosystem. Since these biomarkers are a routine process for fish, it is difficult to monitor their activity manually. For this reason, experts employ engineering technologies to create sensors that can monitor the regular activities of fish. Knowing the importance of these non-invasive stress biomarkers, we developed online biological behavior monitoring system-OBBMS and online biological respiratory response monitoring system-OBRRMS to monitor real-time swimming consistency and respiratory response of fish, respectively. We continuously monitored the swimming consistency and respiration (OCR, CER and RQ) of zebrafish (control and atrazine-treatments) for 7 days using our homemade real-time biological response monitoring systems. Furthermore, we analyzed oxidative stress indicators (SOD, CAT and POD) within the vital tissues (gills, brain and muscle) of zebrafish during stipulated sampling periods. The differences in the swimming consistency and respiratory rate of zebrafish between the control and atrazine treatments could be precisely differentiated on the real-time datasets of OBBMS and OBRRMS. The zebrafish exposed to atrazine toxin showed a concentration-dependent effect (hypoactivity). The OCR and CER were increased in the atrazine treated zebrafish. Both Treatment I and II received a negative response for RQ. Atrazine toxicity let to a rise in the levels of SOD, CAT and POD in the vital tissues of zebrafish. The continuous acquisition of fish signals is achieved which is one of the main merits of our OBBMS and OBRRMS. Additionally, no special data processing was done, the real-time data sets were directly used on statistical tools and the differences between the factors (groups, photoperiods, exposure periods and their interactions) were identified precisely. Hence, our OBBMS and OBRRMS could be a promising tool for biological response-based real-time water quality monitoring studies.

Microalgae cultivation with recycled harvesting water achieved economic and sustainable production of biomass and lipid: Feasibility assessment and inhibitory factors analysis

This study was conducted to achieve economic and sustainable production of biomass and lipids from Chlorella sorokiniana by recirculating cultivation with recycled harvesting water, to identify the major inhibitory factors in recirculating culture, and to analyze accordingly economic benefits. The results showed that recirculating microalgae cultivation (RMC) could obtain 0.20-0.32 g/L biomass and lipid content increased by 23.1 %-38.5 %. Correlation analysis showed that the extracellular polysaccharide (PSext), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and chromaticity of recirculating water inhibited photosynthesis and induced oxidative stress, thus inhibiting the growth of C. sorokiniana. In addition, the economic benefits analysis found that circulating the medium twice could save about 30 % of production cost, which is the most economical RMC solution. In conclusion, this study verified the feasibility and economy of RMC, and provided a better understanding of inhibitory factors identification in culture.

Toxicity of tigecycline on the freshwater microalga Scenedesmus obliquus: Photosynthetic and transcriptional responses

Tigecycline (TGC) is a new tetracycline antibiotic medication against multidrug-resistant bacteria. However, the toxicity of TGC to microalgae remains largely unknown. In this study, the toxicity of TGC on Scenedesmus obliquus was examined, focusing on changes in algal growth, photosynthetic activity, and transcriptome. According to an acute toxicity test, the IC10 and IC50 values were 0.72 mg/L and 4.15 mg/L, respectively. Analyses of photosynthetic efficiency and related parameters, such as light absorption, energy capture, and electron transport, identified a 35% perturbation in the IC50 group, while the IC10 group remained largely unaffected. Transcriptomic analysis showed that in the IC10 and IC50 treatment groups, there were 874 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (220 upregulated and 654 downregulated) and 4289 DEGs (2660 upregulated and 1629 downregulated), respectively. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed that TGC treatment markedly affected photosynthesis, electron transport, and chloroplast functions. In the IC50 group, a clear upregulation of genes related to photosynthesis and chloroplast functions was observed, which could be an adaptive stress response. In the IC10 group, significant downregulation of DEGs involved in ribosomal pathways and peptide biosynthesis processes was observed. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genomes enrichment analysis showed that treatment with TGC also disrupted energy production, protein synthesis, and metabolic processes in S. obliquus. Significant downregulation of key proteins related to Photosystem II was observed under the IC10 TGC treatment. Conversely, IC50 TGC treatment resulted in substantial upregulation across a broad array of photosystem-related proteins from both Photosystems II and I. IC10 and IC50 TGC treatments differentially influenced proteins involved in the photosynthetic electron transport process. This study emphasizes the potential risks of TGC pollution to microalgae, which contributes to a better understanding of the effects of antibiotic contamination in aquatic ecosystems.

Effects of polystyrene microplastics on Euglena gracilis: Intracellular distribution and the protozoan transcriptional responses

Microplastics (MPs) introduced into aquatic environments inevitably interact with aquatic organisms such as plankton, potentially yielding adverse effects on the aquatic ecosystem. The extent to which MPs can infiltrate planktonic cells and evoke a molecular response remains largely unknown. In the present study, the internalization of fluorescently labeled polystyrene (PS) MPs on Euglena gracilis cells was investigated, determining the transcriptional responses within protozoa after an 8-day exposure period. The results showed that exposure to 25 mg/L PS-MPs for 8 days, significantly inhibited protozoan growth (P < 0.05) and decreased the chlorophyll a content of E. gracilis. The photosynthetic efficiency of E. gracilis was suppressed by MPs after 4 days, and then recovered to control values by the eighth day. Fluorescence imaging confirmed the presence of MPs in E. gracilis. Transcriptomic analysis revealed the influence of PS-MPs on a diverse range of transcriptional processes, encompassing oxidative phosphorylation, oxidation-reduction process, photosynthesis, and antioxidant enzymes. Notably, a majority of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) exhibited down-regulation. Furthermore, PS-MPs disturbed the transcriptional regulation of chloroplasts and photosynthesis. These findings indicate a direct interaction between PS-MPs and organelles within E. gracilis cells following internalization, thereby disrupting regular gene expression patterns and posing a substantial environmental risk to the aquatic ecosystem.

Effect of atrazine on testicular toxicity involves accommodative disorder of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes system and testosterone synthesis in European quail (Coturnix coturnix)

Due to the wide use of atrazine (ATR), the concern has increased regarding the negative impact of ATR on reproduction. Nevertheless, the reproductive effects caused by different exposure concentrations and the severity of toxic damage are poorly understood. In organisms, ATR is metabolized and degraded through phase II enzyme systems, and changes in cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes may have a regulatory role in the harm of ATR. However, less information is available on the induction of CYPs by ATR in avian organisms, and even less on its effects on the testis. Birds are exposed to ATR mainly through food residues and contaminated water, the purpose of this study was to examine reproductive toxicity by different exposure concentrations and elaborate metabolic disorders caused by ATR in European quail (Coturnix coturnix). In this study, the quail were given ATR at 50 mg/kg, 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg by oral gavage for 45 days, and the testicular weight coefficients, histopathology and ultrastructure of testes, primary biochemical functions, sex steroid hormones, critical protein levels in the testosterone synthesis pathway, the expression of genes involved CYPs, gonad axis and nuclear receptors expression were investigated. Altogether, testicular coefficient decreased significantly in the high-dose group (1.22%) compared with the control group (3.03%) after 45 days of ATR exposure, and ATR is a potent CYP disruptor that acts through the NXRs and steroid receptor subfamily (APND, CAR, ERND and ERα) without a dose-dependent manner. Notably, ATR interfered with the homeostasis of hormones by triggering the expression of hormones on the gonad axis (LH and E2). These results suggest that exposure to ATR can cause testicular toxicity involving accommodative disorder of phase II enzyme and testosterone synthesis in European quail.

Responses to herbicides of Arctic and temperate microalgae grown under different light intensities

In aquatic ecosystems, microalgae are exposed to light fluctuations at different frequencies due to daily and seasonal changes. Although concentrations of herbicides are lower in Arctic than in temperate regions, atrazine and simazine, are increasingly found in northern aquatic systems because of long-distance aerial dispersal of widespread applications in the south and antifouling biocides used on ships. The toxic effects of atrazine on temperate microalgae are well documented, but very little is known about their effects on Arctic marine microalgae in relation to their temperate counterparts after light adaptation to variable light intensities. We therefore investigated the impacts of atrazine and simazine on photosynthetic activity, PSII energy fluxes, pigment content, photoprotective ability (NPQ), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) content under three light intensities. The goal was to better understand differences in physiological responses to light fluctuations between Arctic and temperate microalgae and to determine how these different characteristics affect their responses to herbicides. The Arctic diatom Chaetoceros showed stronger light adaptation capacity than the Arctic green algae Micromonas. Atrazine and simazine inhibited the growth and photosynthetic electron transport, affected the pigment content, and disturbed the energy balance between light absorption and utilization. As a result, during high light adaptation and in the presence of herbicides, photoprotective pigments were synthesized and NPQ was highly activated. Nevertheless, these protective responses were insufficient to prevent oxidative damage caused by herbicides in both species from both regions, but at different extent depending on the species. Our study demonstrates that light is important in regulating herbicide toxicity in both Arctic and temperate microalgal strains. Moreover, eco-physiological differences in light responses are likely to support changes in the algal community, especially as the Arctic ocean becomes more polluted and bright with continued human impacts.

Treatment of atrazine-containing wastewater by algae-bacteria consortia: Signal transmission and metabolic mechanism

Atrazine is a toxic endocrine disruptor. Biological treatment methods are considered to be effective. In the present study, a modified version of the algae-bacteria consortia (ABC) was established and a control was simultaneously set up to investigate the synergistic relationship between bacteria and algae and the mechanism by which atrazine is metabolized by those microorganisms. The total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency of the ABC reached 89.24% and the atrazine concentration was reduced to below the level recommended by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regulatory standards within 25 days. The protein signal released from the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by the microorganisms triggered the resistance mechanism of the algae, and the conversion of humic acid to fulvic acid and electron transfer constituted the synergistic mechanism between the bacteria and algae. The mechanism by which atrazine is metabolized by the ABC mainly consists of hydrogen bonding, H-pi interactions, and cation exchange with atzA for hydrolysis, followed by a reaction with atzC for decomposition to non-toxic cyanuric acid. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum for bacterial community evolution under atrazine stress, and the analysis revealed that the removal of atrazine within the ABC was mainly dependent on the proportion of Proteobacteria and the expression of degradation genes (p < 0.01). EPS played a major role in the removal of atrazine within the single bacteria group (p < 0.01).

Quantitative Representation of Water Quality Biotoxicity by Algal Photosynthetic Inhibition

The method based on the photosynthetic inhibition effect of algae offers the advantages of swift response and straightforward measurement. Nonetheless, this effect is influenced by both the environment and the state of the algae themselves. Additionally, a single parameter is vulnerable to uncertainties, rendering the measurement accuracy and stability inadequate. This paper employed currently utilized photosynthetic fluorescence parameters, including Fv/Fm(maximum photochemical quantum yield), Performance Indicator (PI_abs), Comprehensive Parameter Index (CPI) and Performance Index of Comprehensive Toxicity Effect (PI_cte), as quantitative toxicity characteristic parameters. The paper compared the univariate curve fitting results with the multivariate data-driven model results and investigated the effectiveness of Back Propagation(BP) Neural Network and Support Vector Machine for Regression (SVR) models to enhance the accuracy and stability of toxicity detection. Using Dichlorophenyl Dimethylurea (DCMU) samples as an example, the mean Relative Root Mean Square Error (RRMSE) corresponding to the optimal parameter PI_cte for the dose-effect curve fitting was 1.246 in the concentration range of 1.25-200 µg/L. On the other hand, the mean RRMSEs corresponding to the results of the BP neural network and SVR models were 0.506 and 0.474, respectively. Notably, BP neural network exhibited excellent prediction accuracy in the medium-high concentration range of 7.5-200 µg/L, with a mean RRSME of only 0.056. Regarding the stability of the results, the mean Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) of the univariate dose-effect curve results was 15.1% within the concentration range of 50-200 µg/L. In contrast, the mean RSDs for both BP neural network and SVR results were less than 5%. In the concentration range of 1.25-200 µg/L, the mean RSDs were 6.1% and 16.5%, with the BP neural network performing well. The experimental results of Atrazine were analyzed to further validate the effectiveness of the BP neural network in improving the accuracy and stability of results. These findings provided valuable insights for the development of biotoxicity detection by using the algae photosynthetic inhibition method.

A Sensitive Response Index Selection for Rapid Assessment of Heavy Metals Toxicity to the Photosynthesis of Chlorella pyrenoidosa Based on Rapid Chlorophyll Fluorescence Induction Kinetics

Heavy metals as toxic pollutants have important impacts on the photosynthesis of microalgae, thus seriously threatening the normal material circulation and energy flow of the aquatic ecosystem. In order to rapidly and sensitively detect the toxicity of heavy metals to microalgal photosynthesis, in this study, the effects of four typical toxic heavy metals, chromium (Cr(VI)), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and copper (Cu), on nine photosynthetic fluorescence parameters (φ_Po, Ψ_Eo, φ_Eo, δ_Ro, Ψ_Ro, φ_Ro, F_V/F_O, PI_ABS, and S_m) derived from the chlorophyll fluorescence rise kinetics (OJIP) curve of microalga Chlorella pyrenoidosa, were investigated based on the chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics technique. By analyzing the change trends of each parameter with the concentrations of the four heavy metals, we found that compared with other parameters, φ_Po (maximum photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II), F_V/F_O (photochemical parameter of photosystem II), PI_ABS (photosynthetic performance index), and S_m (normalized area of the OJIP curve) demonstrated the same monotonic change characteristics with an increase in concentration of each heavy metal, indicating that these four parameters could be used as response indexes to quantitatively detect the toxicity of heavy metals. By further comparing the response performances of φ_Po, F_V/F_O, PI_ABS, and S_m to Cr(VI), Cd, Hg, and Cu, the results indicated that whether it was analyzed from the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC), the influence degree by equal concentration of heavy metal, the 10% effective concentration (EC₁₀), or the median effective concentration (EC₅₀), the response sensitivities of PI_ABS to each heavy metal were all significantly superior to those of φ_Ro, F_V/F_O, and S_m. Thus, PI_ABS was the most suitable response index for sensitive detection of heavy metals toxicity. Using PI_ABS as a response index to compare the toxicity of Cr(VI), Cd, Hg, and Cu to C. pyrenoidosa photosynthesis within 4 h by EC₅₀ values, the results indicated that Hg was the most toxic, while Cr(VI) toxicity was the lowest. This study provides a sensitive response index for rapidly detecting the toxicity of heavy metals to microalgae based on the chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics technique.

Degradation of atrazine by electroactivation of persulfate using FeCuO@C modified composite cathode: Synergistic activation mechanism

In sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), high-efficiency and perdurable materials have drawn considerable interest for use as cathodes, which can effectively degrade refractory organic contaminants through the synergistic electro-activation and transition metal activation of persulfate (PS). Here, the FeCuO@C modified composite cathode (FeCuO@C/AGF) was synthesized via the solvothermal and thermal treatment method based on the CuFe-MOF-74 structure, and the electro-activation PS process (EC/FeCuO@C/AGF/PS) was developed to effectively remove atrazine (ATZ). The surface morphology, electrochemical characteristics, chemical composition, crystal structure, and electrode surface wettability of FeCuO@C/AGF were investigated. It was found that the proposed EC/FeCuO@C/AGF/PS process can successfully remove 100% of ATZ in 20 min at a low current density (2 mA cm^-2) and a low PS concentration (0.4 mM), and PS is successfully activated by combining the electrical and transition metal synergistic activation. The FeCuO@C/AGF cathode exhibits outstanding catalytic functionality over a broad pH range (2-9) and remains stable over five successive cycles. Additionally, the active species involved in the reaction as well as the potential ATZ degradation reaction mechanisms and pathways are discussed. Electrochemical oxidation is a process in which both radicals (SO₄^·-, ·OH, and O₂^·-) and non-radical (¹O₂) participate in the degradation of ATZ. The intermediates of the ATZ degradation process were studied upon the toxicity changing, and the toxicity of the intermediates was found to be reduced during degradation. These results present a novel approach toward the establishment of an effective and reliable electrode in SR-AOPs that can efficiently treat pesticide wastewater.

Evaluation of Cd2+ stress on Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 based on single-cell elemental accumulation and algal toxicological response

With the development of single cell analysis techniques, the concept of precision toxicology has been proposed in recent years. Due to the heterogeneity of cells, we need to perform toxicological assessments on individual cells. Microalgae, one kind of important primary producers, play as a major pathway by which heavy metals enter the food chain and thus accumulate/transfer to higher trophic levels. Herein, the biosorption of Cd (Ex-Cd) and bioaccumulation of Cd (In-Cd) for Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 were investigated by online 3D droplet microfluidic device combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detection. Meanwhile, the algal toxicological responses of the algae cell to Cd²⁺ exposure under different concentration (50, 100, and 150 μg L ^- 1) and time (15 min, 24, 48 and 96 h) were studied. Combining single-cell analysis with toxicological indicators, the toxicity mechanism of Cd²⁺to algal was discussed. The single cell analysis results revealed heterogeneity in cellular uptake of Cd²⁺. The proportion of Cd-containing cells and Cd content in single algal cells all reached the maximum at 24 h. The uptake of Cd²⁺ occurred within 15 min under all tested exposure concentrations and a large part of Cd²⁺ were adsorbed on the algal cells surface. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that cell density, chlorophyll a and carotenoids were significantly negatively correlated with Cd accumulation, whereas ROS level and SOD activity were significantly positively correlated with Cd accumulation. It suggested that Cd²⁺accumulated intracellular would show toxic effects on the algal cells and oxidative stress is the main mechanism of Cd toxicity to algal cells. This work promotes our understanding of the toxicological responses of microalgae under Cd stress at single cells level.

Simultaneous carbon dioxide sequestration and nitrate removal by Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp. consortium

Carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides are the main components of fossil flue gas causing the most serious environmental problems. Developing a sustainable and green method to treat carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides of flue gas is still challenging. Here, a co-cultured microalgae/bacteria system, Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp., was developed for simultaneous sequestration of CO₂ and removal of nitrogen oxides from flue gas, as well as producing valuable microalgae biomass. The co-cultured Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp. showed the highest CO₂ fixation and NO₃^--N removal rate of 0.482 g L^-1d^-1 and 129.6 mg L^-1d^-1, the total chlorophyll accumulation rate of 65.6 mg L^-1 at the initial volume ratio of Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp. as 1:10. The NO₃^--N removal rate can be increased to 183.5 mg L^-1d^-1 by continuous addition of 0.6 g L^-1d^-1 of glucose, which was 37% higher than that of co-culture system without the addition of glucose. Photosynthetic activity and carbonic anhydrase activity of Chlorella vulgaris were significantly increased when co-cultured with Pseudomonas sp. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy indicated that the humic acid-like substances released from Pseudomonas sp. could increase the growth of microalgae. This work provides an attractive way to simultaneously treatment of CO₂ and NO_X from flue gas to produce valuable microalgal biomass.

Effects of Graphene Oxide on the Growth and Photosynthesis of the Emergent Plant Iris pseudacorus

The extensive applications of graphene oxide (GO) inevitably lead to entry into the natural aquatic environment. However, information on its toxicity to emergent plants is still lacking. In this study, an emergent plant, Iris pseudacorus, was exposed to GO (1, 20, 80, and 140 mg·L^-1) under hydroponic conditions for 15 weeks. Changes in plant growth were assessed by analyzing plant biomass and photosynthetic pigment contents; the photosynthesis response was verified by measuring chlorophyll a fluorescence; and the nutrient levels of the plant were evaluated. Results showed that GO at 20-140 mg·L^-1 significantly increased plant dry weight by 37-84% and photosynthetic pigment contents by 26-178%, and 80 mg·L^-1 was the optimal concentration. PSII activity, adjustment capacities of electron transport in PSII, the grouping or energetic connectivity between PSII units, light energy conversion efficiency, photosynthesis performance indexes (by 11-51%), and contents of several nutrient elements (N, Fe, and Cu) were increased by 49-69%, 34-84%, and 11-38%, respectively. These findings indicate that GO can enhance plant growth by promoting plant photosynthesis performance and improving plant nutrient levels, and has great application potential in promoting the growth and development of this emergent plant as a phytoremediation agent.

Effect of GR24 concentrations on tetracycline and nutrient removal from biogas slurry by different microalgae-based technologies

A biogas slurry composed of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and antibiotics was generated. Investigations into the nutrient and tetracycline removal performance of four microalgae-based contaminant removal technologies, including Chlorella vulgaris, C. vulgaris co-cultured with endophytic bacteria, C. vulgaris co-cultured with Ganoderma lucidum, and C. vulgaris co-cultured with G. lucidum and endophytic bacteria, were conducted. The algal-bacterial-fungal consortium with 10^-9 M strigolactone (GR24) yielded the maximum growth rate and average daily yield for algae at 0.325 ± 0.03 d^-1 and 0.192 ± 0.02 g L^-1 d^-1, respectively. The highest nutrient/ tetracycline removal efficiencies were 83.28 ± 7.95 % for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 82.62 ± 7.97 % for total nitrogen (TN), 85.15 ± 8.26 % for total phosphorus (TP) and 83.92 ± 7.65 % for tetracycline. Adding an algal-bacterial-fungal consortium with an optimal synthetic analog GR24 concentration is seemingly an encouraging strategy for enhancing pollutant removal by algae, possibly overcoming the challenges of eutrophication and antibiotic pollution.

Using δFIP as a potential biomarker for risk assessment of environmental pollutants in aquatic ecosystem: A case study of marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC7002

Increased hazardous substances application causes more environmental pollution and risks for human health. Microalgae are the important biological groups in marine ecosystem, and considered to be sensitive to environmental pollutants. Therefore, toxicity test on marine microalgae could provide the most efficient method for aquatic toxicity assessment, and could also be used as the early warning signals in aquatic ecosystem. In view of this, our study aimed at investigating the toxicity potential of two typical organic compounds, and screening out novel photosynthetic indicators for the risk assessment of environmental pollutants. In this study, benzyl alcohol and 2-phenylethanol were chosen as the target organic compounds, and preliminary toxicity mechanism of these organic compounds on marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC7002 was investigated with chlorophyll fluorescence technology. Results showed that PCC7002 could be affected by benzyl alcohol or 2-phenylethanol stress, and the toxicity effect was concentration-dependent. And external benzyl alcohol and 2-phenylethanol stress damaged the oxygen evolving complex, and suppressed electron transport at the donor and receptor sides of photosystem II (PSII), influencing the absorption, transfer, and application of light energy. Furthermore, potential biomarkers were screened by half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) on the basis of pearson correlation coefficient analysis, and fluorescence intensity difference between the I-step and P-step of OJIP curve (δF_IP) seems to be the most sensitive indicator for external stress. This study would be of significant interest to the biomarker community, and pave the way for the practical resource for marine pollution monitoring and assessment.

Evaluation of growth and antioxidant responses of freshwater microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus dimorphus under exposure of moxifloxacin

As one of the fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics, moxifloxacin (MOX) has been frequently released to the aquatic environment, threatening local organisms. However, researches on its ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms are still limited. This study analyzed effects of MOX on the growth, photosynthesis and oxidative stress of two common types of freshwater microalgae, Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus dimorphus. The 96 h-EC₅₀ values of MOX for C. sorokiniana and S. dimorphus were 28.42 and 26.37 mg/L, respectively. Although variations of specific indicators for photosynthetic fluorescence intensity were different, photosystems of two types of microalgae were irreversibly damaged. The malondialdehyde content and superoxide dismutase of C. sorokiniana and S. dimorphus evidently increased, indicating that the exposure of MOX caused serious oxidative stress. Chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids contents of C. sorokiniana increased, probably resulting from the resistance to oxidative stress, whereas they were inhibited due to oxidation damage as for S. dimorphus. Risk quotients (RQs) of MOX for C. sorokiniana and S. dimorphus in wastewater were 7.882 and 8.495, respectively, which demonstrated that MOX had a considerable risk to aquatic environment, especially in the context of its increasing use in practice.

The effects of influent chemical oxygen demand and strigolactone analog concentration on integral biogas upgrading and pollutants removal from piggery wastewater by different microalgae-based technologies

Microalgae-based technologies are promising strategies for efficient wastewater treatment and biogas upgrading. In this study, three types of microalga-fungi/bacteria symbiotic systems stimulated with the strigolactone analog (GR24) were used to simultaneously remove nutrients from treated piggery wastewater and CO₂ from biogas. The effects of initial concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and GR24 on nutrient removal and biogas upgrading were investigated. When the initial COD concentration was 1200 mg/L, the Chlorella vulgaris-Ganoderma lucidum-endophytic bacteria co-cultivation systems achieved the best photosynthetic performance and microalgae growth. Moreover, under the appropriate COD concentration (1200 mg/L), the highest nutrient/CO₂ removal efficiencies were obtained. In addition, 10^-9 M GR24 significantly accelerated nutrient/CO₂ removal efficiencies. These findings provide a theoretical basis for scale-up experiments using microalgae-based technologies.

Removal of tetracycline from water by catalytic photodegradation combined with the microalga Scenedesmus obliquus and the responses of algal photosynthesis and transcription

The antibiotic tetracycline (TC) and its degradation products (TDPs) in degradation solution present serious environmental problems, such as human health damage and ecological risk; thus further treatment is required before being released into the aquatic environment. Furthermore, their environmental impact on microalgae remains unclear. In this study, TC was degraded by photocatalysis using birnessite and UV irradiation, followed by biological purification using the microalga Scenedesmus obliquus. In addition, the photosynthetic activity and transcription of the microalgae were examined to evaluate the toxicity of TC and TDPs. The results show that photocatalytic degradation efficiency reached 92.7% after 30 min, and 11 intermediate products were detected. The microalgae achieved a high TC removal efficiency (99.7%) after 8 days. Exposure to the degraded TC solution (D) resulted in significantly lower (p < 0.05) biomass than the pure TC (T), and S. obliquus in the T treatment showed better resilience than the D treatment. Transcriptomic assays for different treatments revealed differential gene expression mainly involving the photosynthesis, ribosome, translation and peptide metabolic progresses. The up-regulation of photosynthesis-related genes and differential expression of chloroplast genes may be important for S. obliquus to acquire high photosynthetic efficiency and growth recovery when exposed to TC and TDPs. Our study provides a reference for TC removal using a combination of catalytic degradation and microalgal purification, and it is also helpful for understanding the environmental risk of TDPs in natural aquatic environments.

Performance of a Combined Bacteria/Zeolite Permeable Barrier on the Rehabilitation of Wastewater Containing Atrazine and Heavy Metals

Several chemicals, such as pesticides and heavy metals, are frequently encountered together in environment matrices, becoming a priority concerning the prevention of their emissions, as well as their removal from the environment. In this sense, this work aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a permeable biosorbent bio-barrier reactor (PBR) on the removal of atrazine and heavy metals (copper and zinc) from aqueous solutions. The permeable bio-barrier was built with a bacterial biofilm of R. viscosum supported on 13X zeolite. One of the aims of this work is the investigation of the toxic effects of atrazine, copper and zinc on the bacterial growth, as well as the assessment of their ability to adapt to repeated exposure to contaminants and to degrade atrazine. The growth of R. viscosum was not affected by concentrations of atrazine bellow 7 mg/L. However, copper and zinc in binary solutions were able to inhibit the growth of bacteria for all the concentrations tested (5 to 40 mg/L). The pre-acclimation of the bacteria to the contaminants allowed for an increase of 50% of the bacterial growth. Biodegradation tests showed that 35% of atrazine was removed/degraded, revealing that this herbicide is a recalcitrant compound that is hard to degrade by pure cultures. The development of a PBR with R. viscosum supported on zeolite was successfully performed and the removal rates were 85% for copper, 95% for zinc and 25% for atrazine, showing the potential of the sustainable and low-cost technology herein proposed.

An insight into algicidal characteristics of Bacillus altitudinis G3 from dysfunctional photosystem and overproduction of reactive oxygen species

Cyanobacterial blooms negatively affect aquatic ecosystems and human health. Algicidal bacteria can efficiently kill bloom-causing cyanobacteria. Bacillus altitudinis G3 isolated from Dianchi Lake shows high algicidal activity against Microcystis aeruginosa. In this study, we investigated its algicidal characteristics including attack mode, photosynthesis responses, and source and the contribution of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The results showed that G3 efficiently and specifically killed M. aeruginosa mainly by releasing both thermolabile and thermostable algicidal substances, which exhibited the highest algicidal activity (99.8%, 72 h) in bacterial mid-logarithmic growth phase. The algicidal ratio under full-light conditions (99.5%, 60 h) was significantly higher than under dark conditions (<20%, P < 0.001). G3 filtrate caused photosystem dysfunction by decreasing photosynthetic efficiency, as indicated by significantly decreased F_v/F_m and PI_ABS (P < 0.001) values. It also inhibited photosynthetic electron transfer as indicated by significantly decreased rETR (P < 0.001), especially Q_A^- downstream, as revealed by significantly decreased φE_o and ψ_o, and increased M_o (P < 0.001). These results indicated that the algicidal activity of G3 filtrate is light-dependent, and the cyanobacterial photosystem is an important target. Cyanobacterial ROS and malondialdehyde contents greatly increased by 37.1% and 208% at 36 h, respectively. ROS levels decreased by 49.2% (9 h) when diuron (3-(3-4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) partially blocked photosynthetic electron transport from Q_A to Q_B. Therefore, excessive ROS were produced from disrupted photosynthesis, especially the inhibited electron transport area in Q_A^- downstream, and caused severe lipid peroxidation with significantly increased MDA content and oxidative stress in cyanobacteria. The ROS scavenger N-acetyl-l-cysteine significantly decreased both cyanobacterial ROS levels (34%) and algicidal ratio (52%, P < 0.05) at 39 h. Thus, excessive ROS production due to G3 filtrate administration significantly contributed to its algicidal effect. G3 could be an excellent algicide to control M. aeruginosa blooms in waters under suitable light conditions.

Growth, ROS accumulation site, and photosynthesis inhibition mechanism of Chlorella vulgaris by triclosan

Although the addition of triclosan (TCS) in consumer products has been strictly restricted, its continuous applications in hospitals and other medical facilities and its numerous residues still pose a potential risk to aquatic organisms and aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the growth, biochemical alterations, and physiological responses of Chlorella vulgaris exposed to different concentrations of TCS. The potential toxicity mechanisms associated with excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and disruption of photosynthetic system II (PSII) were also analyzed. The results indicated that the growth, cellular ultrastructure, and physiology of C. vulgaris were severely affected by TCS in a dose-effect dependent manner. TCS inhibited the growth of C. vulgaris, leading to mitochondria enlargement, the disordering of the arrangement of thylakoids, cell wall rupture, organelles loss, and the cytoplasm lysis. TCS induced severe oxidative damage characterized by ROS accumulation, elevated malondialdehyde (MDA), and up-regulation of antioxidant enzyme activities. Moreover, in TCS-induced algal cells, the main sites of ROS accumulation were chloroplasts, mitochondria, and cell membranes, with ROS accumulating most in the mitochondria. In addition, TCS caused damage to the reaction center (RC inactivation), donor side (OEC damage), and accepted side (electron transport from Q_A to Q_B) of PSII in C. vulgaris, leading to inhibition of photosynthetic activity. These results could provide novel insights into the mechanisms of TCS-induced ROS accumulation and photosynthetic inhibition in C. vulgaris, which would contribute to a deep understanding of TCS toxicity on algae.

Effect of different CO2 concentrations on biogas upgrading and nutrient removal by microalgae-fungi co-culture

Owing to the high carbon dioxide (CO₂)-fixation efficiency, microalgae-based technology has been widely used for biogas purification. The present study explored the effect of CO₂ concentration on biogas purification by an algal-fungal-bacterial symbiotic system. Two algal-fungal-bacterial symbiotic systems were cultivated to purify four simulated biogas samples with different CO₂ concentrations. The results showed that GR24, a synthetic analog of strigolactone, stimulated the growth of the algal-fungal-bacterial symbiotic system. The optimal CO₂ concentration for the purification of the simulated biogas was 45% (V/V), and the optimal symbiotic system was Chlorella vulgaris-Ganoderma lucidum-endophytic bacteria-GR24. The maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD; 82.61 ± 7.73%), total nitrogen (TN; 81.36 ± 7.97%), total phosphorus (TP; 85.69 ± 8.19), and CO₂ (69.23 ± 6.56%) removal efficiencies were detected with the addition of 10^-9 M GR24 to the C. vulgaris-G. lucidum-endophytic bacterial symbiotic system. These findings confirmed the effect of CO₂ concentration on the purification of biogas by the algal-bacterial symbiotic system. The study provides a theoretical basis for further research on the treatment of wastewater and biogas.

Role of naphthaleneacetic acid in the degradation of bisphenol A and wastewater treatment by microalgae: Enhancement and signaling

Coupling microalgae cultivation with wastewater treatment is a promising environmentally sustainable development strategy. However, toxics such as Bisphenol A (BPA) in wastewater damage microalgae cells and reduces bioresources production. Phytohormone regulation has the potential to solve this issue. However, phytohormone research is still in its infancy. In this work, 0.2 μM naphthyl acetic acid (NAA) significantly enhanced Chlorella vulgaris BPA detoxification by 127.3% and Chlorella biomass production by 46.4%. NAA helps Chlorella convert bisphenol A into small non-toxic intermediates by enhancing the expression of associated enzymes. Simultaneously, NAA promoted carbon fixation and photosynthetic metabolism. Activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway strengthened the downstream antioxidant system while improving photosynthesis and intracellular starch and lipid synthesis. Carbohydrates, pigment, and lipid production was significantly enhanced by 20.0%, 46.9%, and 21.8%, respectively. A new insight is provided into how phytohormones may increase microalgae in wastewater's bioresource transformation and toxicity resistance.

Adsorption and Photocatalytic Degradation of Pesticides into Nanocomposites: A Review

The extensive use of pesticides in agriculture has significantly impacted the environment and human health, as these pollutants are inadequately disposed of into water bodies. In addition, pesticides can cause adverse effects on humans and aquatic animals due to their incomplete removal from the aqueous medium by conventional wastewater treatments. Therefore, processes such as heterogeneous photocatalysis and adsorption by nanocomposites have received special attention in the scientific community due to their unique properties and ability to degrade and remove several organic pollutants, including pesticides. This report reviews the use of nanocomposites in pesticide adsorption and photocatalytic degradation from aqueous solutions. A bibliographic search was performed using the ScienceDirect, American Chemical Society (ACS), and Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) indexes, using Boolean logic and the following descriptors: "pesticide degradation" AND "photocatalysis" AND "nanocomposites"; "nanocomposites" AND "pesticides" AND "adsorption". The search was limited to research article documents in the last ten years (from January 2012 to June 2022). The results made it possible to verify that the most dangerous pesticides are not the most commonly degraded/removed from wastewater. At the same time, the potential of the supported nanocatalysts and nanoadsorbents in the decontamination of wastewater-containing pesticides is confirmed once they present reduced bandgap energy, which occurs over a wide range of wavelengths. Moreover, due to the great affinity of the supported nanocatalysts with pesticides, better charge separation, high removal, and degradation values are reported for these organic compounds. Thus, the class of the nanocomposites investigated in this work, magnetic or not, can be characterized as suitable nanomaterials with potential and unique properties useful in heterogeneous photocatalysts and the adsorption of pesticides.

Effects of Tetracycline on Scenedesmus obliquus Microalgae Photosynthetic Processes

Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics can be detected worldwide in the aquatic environment due to their extensive use and low utilization efficiency, and they may affect the physiological processes of non-target organisms. In this study, the acute and sub-acute toxicities of TC on the freshwater microalga Scenedesmus obliquus were investigated with an emphasis on algal photosynthesis and transcription alterations during an 8 d TC exposure. The results showed that the IC₁₀, IC₃₀ and IC₅₀ values were 1.8, 4.1 and 6.9 mg/L, respectively. During sub-acute exposure, the microalgae of the IC₁₀ treatment was able to recover comparable growth to that of the control by day 7, while significantly lower cell densities were observed in the IC₃₀ and IC₅₀ treatments at the end of the exposure. The photosynthetic efficiency F_v/F_M of S. obliquus first decreased as the TC concentration increased and then returned to a level close to that of the control on day 8, accompanied by an increase in photosynthetic activities, including light harvesting, electron transport and energy dissipation. Transcriptomic analysis of the IC₁₀ treatment (1.8 mg/L TC) revealed that 2157 differentially expressed genes were up-regulated and 1629 were down-regulated compared with the control. KEGG and GO enrichments demonstrated that 28 photosynthesis-related genes involving light-harvesting chlorophyll protein complex, photosystem I, photosystem II, photosynthetic electron transport and enzymes were up-regulated, which may be the factor responsible for the enhanced photosynthesis and recovery of the microalgae. Our work may be helpful not only for gaining a better understanding of the environmental risk of TC at concentrations close to the real levels in natural waters, but also for explaining photosynthesis and related gene transcription induced by antibiotics.

Photosynthetic Characteristics and Chloroplast Ultrastructure Responses of Citrus Leaves to Copper Toxicity Induced by Bordeaux Mixture in Greenhouse

Bordeaux mixture (Bm) is a copper (Cu)-based pesticide that has been widely used for controlling citrus scab and citrus canker. However, frequent spraying of Bm is toxic to citrus. To our knowledge, few studies are available that discuss how the photosynthetic characteristics and chloroplast ultrastructure of citrus leaves are affected by Cu toxicity induced by excessive Bm. In the study, two-year-old seedlings of Citrus grandis (C. grandis) and Citrus sinensis (C. sinensis), which were precultured in pots, were foliar-sprayed with deionized water (as control) or Bm diluted 500-fold at intervals of 7 days for 6 times (4 times as recommended by the manufacturer) to investigate the leaf Cu absorption, photosynthesis, chloroplast ultrastructure and antioxidant enzymatic activities. Bm foliar-sprayed 6 times on citrus seedlings increased the leaf Cu content, decreased the photosynthetic pigments content and destroyed the chloroplast ultrastructure, which induced leaf chlorosis and photosynthetic inhibition. A lower Cu absorption, a higher light photon-electron transfer efficiency, a relative integrity of chloroplast ultrastructure and a promoted antioxidant protection contributed to a higher photosynthetic activity of C. grandis than C. sinensis under excessive spraying of Bm. The present study provides crucial references for screening and selecting citrus species with a higher tolerance to Cu toxicity induced by excessive Bm.

Efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate mediated by Co(II)-CeO2 as a novel heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of refractory organic contaminants: Degradation pathway, mechanism and toxicity assessment

A series of Co(II)-CeO₂ mixed metal oxides were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-calcination procedure for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degrading toxic and difficult biodegradable organics. Co(II)-CeO₂ showed excellent degradation performance toward rhodamine B (RhB), toluidine blue, methylene blue and diclofenac. RhB is a refractory organic contaminant, and ecotoxicological evaluation unraveled its harmfulness to the biosphere. RhB was selected as the model pollutant to investigate catalytic mechanisms. Parameters affecting degradation performance were profoundly investigated, including Co:Ce feed ratio, initial pH, PMS dosage, catalyst dosage, RhB concentration, coexisting ions and reaction temperature. Reaction mechanisms were proposed based on density functional theory calculations and identifications of reactive oxygen species. Improvements have been achieved in seven aspects compared to previous studies, including 100% degradation ratio in both real water samples and each reuse of the catalyst, ultrafast degradation rate, cost-effectiveness of the catalyst, toxicity-attenuation provided by the developed degradation method, high degree of mineralization for the model pollutant, negligible leaching of active sites, and the enhancement of catalytic performance by utilizing trace leached cobalt, endowing the technique with broad applicability and prospect.

Pesticide pollutants in the environment - A critical review on remediation techniques, mechanism and toxicological impact

The excessive and unorganised utilisation of pesticides have posed negative impacts on soil and water at higher levels. Pesticides are a major class of persistent organic compounds with high resistance to natural biodegradation and enhanced tendency to bio accumulate. The severe health hazards imposed on the living organisms hinder the ecosystem and lead to chronic and irreversible health issues. Photocatalytic method is reported as a potential alternative with a variety of techniques and materials that are safer, easier, durable, cost-effective and efficient. Nanomaterials play a key role in this domain due to their versatility. In particular, nanostructured materials of organized shapes and morphological properties have gained enormous attention in research and real-time applications. Specifically, nanomaterials like nanotubes, nanorods and nanowires have unique properties and anisotropic structure that make them more suitable for treating pesticide wastes with photocatalysis. Variety of tuning methods and materials are emerging to enhance the activity of titanium and zinc based nanocatalysts in remediation methods. In the present article, four pesticides, namely, atrazine, chlorpyrifos, paraquat and naphthalene are chosen due to their common occurrence and usage in agricultural applications. These pesticides are highly toxic and need special attention to explore appropriate remediation methods. The report also details the latest innovations reported by several research studies in exploring the potential of specially synthesised nanoparticles for photocatalytic removal of pesticide pollutants from environment. For zinc-based hybrid nanomaterials, the maximum disintegration reported were 99%, 98%, 73.3% and 92.3% for atrazine, chlorpyrifos, paraquat and naphthalene, respectively.

Toxicity, biodegradation of moxifloxacin and gatifloxacin on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and their metabolic fate

The novel fourth-generation fluoroquinolones (FQs) were developed to improve the antimicrobial activity and their utilization has rapidly increased in recent years. However, knowledge of the ecotoxicity and microalgae-mediated biodegradation of these novel FQs is limited. In this research, the toxic effects of moxifloxacin (MOX) and gatifloxacin (GAT) on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as well as their biodegradation and metabolic fate were investigated. The results showed that the toxicity of MOX to C. reinhardtii was higher than that of GAT, and increased with culture time. Chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment content analyses suggested that the decrease in photosynthetic efficiency was primarily caused by the inhibition of electron transport after Q_A in PSII complex. These FQs induced oxidative damage in cells, and the antioxidation mechanisms of C. reinhardtii were analyzed. The maximum MOX removal of 77.67% by C. reinhardtii was achieved at 1 mg/L MOX, whereas the maximum GAT removal of 34.04% was attained at 20 mg/L GAT. The different hydrophilicity and lipophilicity of these FQs resulted in distinct findings in biodegradation experiments. Identification of the transformation products suggested that the likely biodegradation pathways of FQs by C. reinhardtii were hydroxylation, demethylation, and ring cleavage.

Metabolomics revealed the photosynthetic performance and metabolomic characteristics of Euglena gracilis under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions

Photosynthetic and metabolomic performance of Euglena gracilis was examined and compared under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions. Autotrophic protozoa (AP) obtained greater biomass (about 33% higher) than the mixotrophic protozoa (MP) after 12 days of growth. AP maintained steady photosynthesis, while MP showed a remarkable decrease in photosynthetic efficiency and dropped to an extremely low level at day 12. In MP, low light absorption and photosynthetic electron transport efficiency, and high energy dissipation were reflected by the chlorophyll (chl a) fluorescence (OJIP) of the protozoa. The values of Ψ_O, Φ_Eo, and ET_O/RC of MP decreased to extremely low levels, to 1/15, 1/46, and 1/9 those of AP, respectively, while DI_O/RC increased to approximately 16 times that of AP. A total of 137 metabolites were showed significant differences between AP and MP. AP accumulated more monosaccharide, lipids, and alkaloids, while MP produced more amino acids, peptides, and long-chain fatty acids including poly-unsaturated fatty acids. The top nine most important enriched pathways obtained from KEGG mapping were related to ABC transporters, biosynthesis of amino acids, purine metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism. There were significant differences between AP and MP in photosynthetic activity, metabolites, and metabolic pathways. This work presented useful information for the production of high value bioproducts in E. gracilis cultured under different nutritional conditions.

Trace phenolic acids simultaneously enhance degradation of chlorophenol and biofuel production by Chlorella regularis

Coupling the cultivation of microalgae with wastewater treatment is a promising technology to recover bioresources from wastewater. However, toxic pollutants in wastewater seriously inhibit the growth of microalgae and the removal of pollutants. Phenolic acids are similar to phytohormones, could potentially relieve the toxicity to microalgae and simultaneously promote pollutant degradation and lipid accumulation. Chlorella and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) were utilized to simulate the toxic wastewater treatment, and the roles of two typical phenolic acids, such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HBA) and caffeic acid (CA), were explored. The 0.2 μM concentration of p-HBA or CA improved the specific growth rate by 7.6% by enhancing photosynthesis and DNA replication. The oxidative damage caused by 4-CP was reduced by 30.3-49.7% via the synthesis of more antioxidant enzymes and the direct scavenging of free radicals by phenolic acids. Furthermore, the 4-CP removal rate increased by 27.0%, and toxic 4-CP was degraded into non-toxic compounds. The phenolic acids did not change the 4-CP degradation pathway but accelerated its removal and detoxification by enhancing the expression of 4-CP degradation enzymes. Simultaneously, lipid production increased by 20.5-23.1% due to the upregulation of enzymes related to fatty acid and triacylglycerol synthesis. Trace phenolic acids stimulated the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling cascade and the calcium signaling pathway to regulate the physiology of the microalgae and protect cells from toxic stress. This study provides a promising new strategy for toxic wastewater treatment and bioresource recovery.

Integration of Metabolomics and Transcriptomics for Investigating the Tolerance of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica) to Atrazine Stress

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is a monotypic species widely planted in China. However, residual atrazine, a commonly used maize herbicide, in soil, is a major abiotic stress to millet. Here, we investigated atrazine tolerance in millet based on the field experiments, then obtained an atrazine-resistant variety (Gongai2, GA2) and an atrazine-sensitive variety (Longgu31, LG31). To examine the effects of atrazine on genes and metabolites in millet plants, we compared the transcriptomic and metabolomic profiles between GA2 and LG31 seedling leaves. The results showed that 2,208 differentially expressed genes (DEGs; 501 upregulated, 1,707 downregulated) and 192 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs; 82 upregulated, 110 downregulate) were identified in atrazine-treated GA2, while in atrazine-treated LG31, 1,773 DEGs (761 upregulated, 1,012 downregulated) and 215 DEMs (95 upregulated, 120 downregulated) were identified. The bioinformatics analysis of DEGs and DEMs showed that many biosynthetic metabolism pathways were significantly enriched in GA2 and LG31, such as glutathione metabolism (oxiglutatione, γ-glutamylcysteine; GSTU6, GSTU1, GSTF1), amino acid biosynthesis (L-cysteine, N-acetyl-L-glutamic acid; ArgB, GS, hisC, POX1), and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis [trans-5-o-(4-coumaroyl)shikimate; HST, C3'H]. Meanwhile, the co-expression analysis indicated that GA2 plants had enhanced atrazine tolerance owing to improved glutathione metabolism and proline biosynthesis, and the enrichment of scopoletin may help LG31 plants resist atrazine stress. Herein, we screened an atrazine-resistant millet variety and generated valuable information that may deepen our understanding of the complex molecular mechanism underlying the response to atrazine stress in millet.

Simultaneous biogas upgrading and biogas slurry treatment by different microalgae-based technologies under various strigolactone analog (GR24) concentrations

In this research, the effects of exogenous strigolactone analog (GR24) on the growth rate, daily productivity and photosynthesis of symbiotes of Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris)-Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum)-endophytic bacteria, C. vulgaris-G. lucidum-activated sludge and C. vulgaris-G. lucidum-multi-walled carbon nanotube, and the simultaneous treatment of biogas slurry and biogas were examined. The C. vulgaris-G. lucidum-endophytic bacteria symbiote achieved the best treatment effectiveness for biogas slurry and biogas, with removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and CO₂ of 81.4 ± 7.6%, 79.6 ± 7.6%, 82.5 ± 8.2%, and 67.3 ± 6.3% under the optimal GR24 concentration of 10^-9 M. Moreover, the treatment effects were positively correlated with growth performance and photosynthesis efficiency of the symbiote. These findings advance the development and application of symbiotic systems in the field of wastewater treatment and biogas upgrading.

Phytotoxicity of atrazine combined with cadmium on photosynthetic apparatus of the emergent plant species Iris pseudacorus

The combined pollution, instead of single pollution, has become a widespread contamination phenomenon in aquatic environment. However, little information is now available about the joint effects of the combined pollution, especially co-existed pesticides and heavy metals, on aquatic plants. In the present study, using continuous excitation chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and the OJIP transient, comparisons of herbicide atrazine (ATZ) phytotoxicity on Iris pseudacorus between in the presence and absence of cadmium (Cd) were evaluated over an exposure period of three weeks under laboratory conditions. Results showed that both ATZ and Cd were toxic to I. pseudacorus. The ratio F_v/F_o, specific electron transport energy (ET₀/RC), and photochemistry efficiency (PI_abs and PI_total) of this emergent plant species at individual ATZ and Cd concentrations were significantly lower than those of the control. ATZ mainly inhibited electron transport beyond Q_A at PSII acceptor side as indicated by the sharp rise of the J-step level of fluorescence rise kinetics. A pronounced K-step and the loss of I-step due to the damage on the OEC and PSI also occurred when ATZ was at or above 1.0 mg·L^-1. In comparison to ATZ alone, ATZ combined with Cd resulted in a lower amplitude rise in J-step with apparent J-I and I-P phases; and significantly lower F_o with higher F_v/F_o, as well as greater ET₀/RC with higher values of PI_abs and PI_total. However, the adverse influences of ATZ combined with Cd on the above indicators were still significant as compared with the control. Therefore, the coexistence of Cd alleviated the individual phytotoxicities of ATZ, whereas combined pollution of ATZ and Cd still induced the decline in photosynthetic performance of I. pseudacorus, and its potential ecological impacts on the aquatic vegetation cannot be ignored. Our findings offer a better understanding of the joint effects of the pesticide and heavy metal on non-target aquatic plants, and provided valuable insights into the interaction of these pollutants in aquatic environment.

Performance of different microalgae-fungi-bacteria co-culture technologies in photosynthetic and removal performance in response to various GR24 concentrations

The purification effect of two different microalgae-fungi-bacteria symbiosis technologies on biogas and biogas slurry was studied to determine the best symbiosis treatment technology and the suitable concentration of GR24. The results showed that the purification effect of biogas slurry in Chlorella vulgaris-Ganoderma lucidum-endophytic bacteria (S395-2) symbiont co-culture system was better than that of the biogas slurry in Scenedesmus obliquus-Pleurotus ostreatus-S395-2 symbionts. Following 10^-9 M GR24 treatment, Chlorella vulgaris-Ganoderma lucidum-S395-2 symbionts had elevated mean daily production rate and growth rate by 1.92 and 1.46 folds in comparison with blank group. After adjusting the GR24 level within the range of 10^-9 M-10^-7 M, Ganoderma lucidum-assisted Chlorella vulgaris-S395-2 attained higher maximal removal rates for TN, COD, CO₂, and TP by 10.78%, 14.62%, 3.86%, and 9.07%, respectively, compared to the rates when GR24 was not added.

Assessing and modeling nitrite inhibition in microalgae-bacteria consortia for wastewater treatment by means of photo-respirometric and chlorophyll fluorescence techniques

Total nitrite (TNO₂ = HNO₂ + NO^-₂) accumulation due to the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was monitored in microalgae-bacteria consortia, and the inhibitory effect of nitrite/free nitrous acid (NO₂-N/FNA) on microalgae photosynthesis and inhibition mechanism was studied. A culture of Scenedesmus was used to run two sets of batch reactors at different pH and TNO₂ concentrations to evaluate the toxic potential of NO₂-N and FNA. Photo-respirometric tests showed that NO₂-N accumulation has a negative impact on net oxygen production rate (OPR_NET). Chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis was used to examine the biochemical effects of NO₂-N stress and the mechanism of NO₂-N inhibition. The electron transport rate (ETR), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and JIP-test revealed that the electron transport chain between Photosystems II and I (PS II and PS I) was hindered at NO₂-N concentrations above 25 g N m^-3. Electron acceptor Q_A was not able to reoxidize and could not transfer electrons to the next electron acceptor, Q_B, accumulating P₆₈₀⁺ (excited PS II reaction center) and limiting oxygen production. A semi-continuous reactor containing a Scenedesmus culture was monitored by photo-respirometry tests and Chlorophyll a fluorescence to calibrate NO₂-N inhibition (5-35 g N m^-3). Non-competitive inhibition and Hill-type models were compared to select the best-fitting inhibition equations. Inhibition was correctly modeled by the Hill-type model and a half inhibition constant (K_I) for OPR_NET, NPQ, maximum photosynthetic rate (ETR_MAX) and the performance index PI_ABS was 23.7 ± 1.2, 26.36 ± 1.10, 39 ± 2 and 26.5 ± 0.4, respectively.

Effects of co-exposure of the triazine herbicides atrazine, prometryn and terbutryn on Phaeodactylum tricornutum photosynthesis and nutritional value

Triazine herbicides are widely used in agricultural production, and large amounts of herbicide residue enter the ocean through surface runoff. In this study, the toxicities of the triazine herbicides atrazine, prometryn and terbutryn (separately and mixed) to Phaeodactylum tricornutum were investigated. The EC50 values of atrazine, prometryn and terbutryn were 28.38 μg L^-1, 8.86 μg L^-1, and 1.38 μg L^-1, respectively. The EC50 of an equitoxic mixture of the three herbicides was 0.78 TU, indicating that they had synergistic effects. The equitoxic mixture accumulated in P. tricornutum, which damaged chloroplast and mitochondria structures and significantly decrease the biomass, levels of key cellular components (such as chlorophyll a (chl a), carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, fatty acid content) and the effective photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII, ∆Fv/Fm). The mixture also downregulated key genes in the light response (PsbD, PetF), dark response (PGK, PRK), tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle (CS, ID, OGD, and MS) and fatty acid synthesis (FABB, SCD, and PTD9). P. tricornutum partially alleviates the effects of the mixture on photosynthesis and fatty acid synthesis by upregulating PetD, PsaB, RbcL and FabI expression. The triazine herbicide mixture reduced the biomass and nutritional value of marine phytoplankton by inhibiting photosynthesis and energy metabolism.

Nutrient and tetracycline removal from simulated biogas slurry and biogas upgrading by microalgae cultivation under different carbon nanotubes concentrations

The present study sought to determine the effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) concentrations (0-10 mg L^-1) on tetracycline (TC) and biogas slurry nutrient removal by microalga Chlorella vulgaris cultivation. Treatments with 1 mg L^-1 MWCNTs yielded the maximum chlorophyll a content, dry weight, and algal density of 143.73 ± 3.11 μg L^-1, 0.81 ± 0.008 g L^-1, and 5.83×10⁷ cells L^-1, respectively, suggesting that 1 mg L^-1 MWCNTs could enhance microalgal growth performance and photosynthesis effectively. The highest removal rates of chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, TC, and CO₂ under 1 mg L^-1 MWCNTs were 90.43 ± 5.15%, 78.12 ± 4.33%, 77.07 ± 4.12%, 89.64 ± 3.08%, and 64.26 ± 0.71%, respectively. These results elucidated that moderate MWCNTs concentrations might promote TC and nutrient removal by enhancing Chlorella vulgaris photosynthesis activity.

Contribution of vitamin B12 to biogas upgrading and nutrient removal by different microalgae-based technology

The algae-based technology has a positive effect on the treatment of biogas slurry and the purification of biogas, while vitamin B12 (VB12) is one of the important regulatory substances in the algae-based cultivation system. In this study, different concentrations of VB12 were used in three microalgal treatment technologies to assess their effect on simultaneous removal of nutrients from biogas slurry and removal of CO₂ from raw biogas. Results showed that Chlorella vulgaris exhibited higher growth rate, mean daily productivity, chlorophyll a content, carbonic anhydrase activity and better photosynthetic properties when co-cultivated with Ganoderma lucidum, rather than when co-cultivated with activated sludge or under mono-cultivation. Maximum mean chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and CO₂ removal efficiencies were found to be 84.29 ± 8.28%, 83.27 ± 8.14%, 85.27 ± 8.46% and 65.71 ± 6.35%, respectively when microalgae were co-cultivated with Ganoderma lucidum under 100 ng L^-1 of VB12. This study shows the potential of microalgae and fungi co-cultivation supplemented with VB12 for the simultaneous upgradation of biogas production as well as for the purification of biogas slurry.
