Microplastics meet micropollutants in a central european river stream: Adsorption of pollutants to microplastics under environmentally relevant conditions

Microplastics have emerged as pervasive pollutants in aquatic environments, and their interaction with organic contaminants poses a significant environmental challenge. This study aimed to explore the adsorption of micropollutants onto microplastics in a river, examining different plastic materials and the effect of aging on adsorption capacity. Microplastics (low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) were introduced into a river stream, and a comprehensive analysis involving 297 organic pollutants was conducted. Passive samplers were deployed to monitor micropollutant presence in the river. Sixty-four analytes were identified in the river flow, with telmisartan being the most prevalent. Nonaged PVC showed the highest telmisartan concentration at 279 ng/g (168 ng/m2 regarding the microplastic surface), while aged PVC exhibited a fourfold decrease. Conversely, aged LDPE preferentially adsorbed metoprolol and tramadol, with concentrations increasing 12- and 3-fold, respectively, compared to nonaged LDPE. Azithromycin and clarithromycin, positively charged compounds, exhibited higher sorption to PET microplastics, regardless of aging. Diclofenac showed higher concentrations on nonaged PVC compared to aged PVC. Aging induced structural changes in microplastics, including color alterations, smaller particle production, and increased specific surface area. These changes influenced micropollutant adsorption, with hydrophobicity, dissociation constants, and the ionic form of pollutants being key factors. Aged microplastics generally showed different sorption properties. A comparison of microplastics and control sand particles indicated preferential micropollutant sorption to microplastics, underscoring their role as vectors for contaminant transport in aquatic ecosystems. Analysis of river sediment emphasized the significance of contact time in pollutant accumulation. Overall, this study provides insights into the complex interactions between microplastics and organic pollutants under environmental conditions and contributes to a better understanding of the fate and behavior of these two types of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems.

Microplastics in water resources: Global pollution circle, possible technological solutions, legislations, and future horizon

Beneath the surface of our ecosystems, microplastics (MPs) silently loom as a significant threat. These minuscule pollutants, invisible to the naked eye, wreak havoc on living organisms and disrupt the delicate balance of our environment. As we delve into a trove of data and reports, a troubling narrative unfolds: MPs pose a grave risk to both health and food chains with their diverse compositions and chemical characteristics. Nevertheless, the peril extends further. MPs infiltrate the environment and intertwine with other pollutants. Worldwide, microplastic levels fluctuate dramatically, ranging from 0.001 to 140 particles.m-3 in water and 0.2 to 8766 particles.g-1 in sediment, painting a stark picture of pervasive pollution. Coastal and marine ecosystems bear the brunt, with each organism laden with thousands of microplastic particles. MPs possess a remarkable ability to absorb a plethora of contaminants, and their environmental behavior is influenced by factors such as molecular weight and pH. Reported adsorption capacities of MPs vary greatly, spanning from 0.001 to 12,700 μg·g-1. These distressing figures serve as a clarion call, demanding immediate action and heightened environmental consciousness. Legislation, innovation, and sustainable practices stand as indispensable defenses against this encroaching menace. Grasping the intricate interplay between microplastics and pollutants is paramount, guiding us toward effective mitigation strategies and preserving our health ecosystems.

The mechanism of UV accelerated aging of polyvinyl chloride in marine environment: The role of free radicals

This study systematically investigated the photo-aging of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in deionized water, estuary water, and seawater. As the concentration of Cl- increases, the carbonyl index (CI) of PVC during photo aging also increases, indicating that Cl- plays a dominant role in PVC photoaging in the environment, which enhance carbonyl index and •OH radical accumulation. Unlike previous studies, this study discovered that halogen radicals were also generated during PVC aging. Compared to •OH radicals, halogen radicals exhibit stronger selectivity and are more conducive to the photo aging of PVC. Additionally, it was found that PVC shows specific toxicity to Paramecia caudatum at various concentrations both before and after aging, affecting the reproduction process of Paramecia caudatum. This study elucidates the mechanism by which anions in natural water bodies affect the rate of PVC aging, providing a scientific basis for understanding the photodegradation of MPs in the ocean.

Co-accumulation characteristics and interaction mechanism of microplastics and PFASs in a large shallow lake

Microplastics (MPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) coexist widely in lakes and affect ecological security. The coexistence characteristics and adsorption-desorption mechanisms between MPs and typical PFASs were explored in a typical eutrophic shallow lake (Taihu Lake). Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) are the primary types of MPs in Taihu Lake, with average abundances in water and sediment of 18630 n/m3 and 584 n/kg, respectively. The average concentrations of PFASs in water and sediment are 288.93 ng/L and 4.33 ng/g, with short-chain PFASs (C4-C7) being the main pollutants. Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) in both water and sediment contributed 38.48 % and 44.53 %, respectively, followed by hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA). The morphological characteristics of MPs influence the distribution of long-chain PFAS in lake water, while the presence of HFPO-DA and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) in sediment is directly linked to the concentration and size of MPs. A combination of field investigations and indoor experiments revealed that the irreversible adsorption characteristics between MPs and HFPO-DA may promote the high cumulative flux of HFPO-DA in sediment, and the biofilm on the surface of MPs significantly accelerates this accumulation process. The results provide a new perspective on the co-transport behavior of emerging pollutants in aquatic environments.

Factors influencing the distribution, risk, and transport of microplastics and heavy metals for wildlife and habitats in "island" landscapes: From source to sink

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals (HMs) are important pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems. In particular, the "island" landscape's weak resistance makes it vulnerable to pollution. However, there is a lack of research on MPs and HMs in island landscapes. Therefore, we used Helan Mountain as the research area. Assess the concentrations, spatial distribution, ecological risks, sources, and transport of MPs and HMs in the soil and blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) feces. Variations in geographical distribution showed a connection between human activity and pollutants. Risk assessment indicated soil and wildlife were influenced by long-term pollutant polarization and multi-element inclusion (Igeo, Class I; PHI, Class V; RI (MPs), 33 % Class II, and 17 % Class IV; HI = 452.08). Source apportionment showed that tourism and coal combustion were the primary sources of pollutants. Meanwhile, a new coupling model of PMF/Risk was applied to quantify the source contribution of various risk types indicated transportation roads and tourism sources were the main sources of ecological and health risks, respectively. Improve the traceability of pollution source risks. Furthermore, also developed a novel tracing model for pollutant transportation, revealing a unique "source-sink-source" cycle in pollutant transportation, which provides a new methodological framework for the division of pollution risk areas in nature reserves and the evaluation of spatial transport between sources and sinks. Overall, this study establishes a foundational framework for conducting comprehensive risk assessments and formulating strategies for pollution control and management.

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of different types of (aged) microplastics for napropamide in soils

The role of microplastics (MPs) as pollutant carriers and their influence on the fate of organic pollutants has received considerable attention. However, the impacts of MPs on the adsorption of amide herbicides in soil, have not been investigated. In this study, non-biodegradable (polyethylene, PEM) and biodegradable (polybutylene adipate terephthalate, PBATM) MPs were aged by exposure to one month of ultraviolet irradiation. The impacts of MPs on the adsorption of napropamide (Nap) in two agricultural soils (black soil [BS] and fluvo-aquic soil [CS]) were investigated through batch experiments. The findings suggested that the adsorption of Nap onto PEM was mainly governed by physical processes, while, chemical mechanisms, should not be overlooked on PBATM. With the addition of 0.2% MPs, the maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) and adsorption distribution coefficient (KF) of soil containing PEM (soil-PEM) were higher than that of soil-PBATM, however, the Qm and KF values of soil-PBATM for Nap were higher when the addition of MPs was 2%. After UV aging, the increased specific surface area of MPs led to an increased adhesion of soil particles. These were attributed to the different surface properties and concentrations of different (aged) MPs, resulting in differences in the inhibition effect by soil particles. The adhesion of soil particles was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, regardless of the addition of MPs, the Qm values of BS for Nap were higher than those for CS. In summary, MPs can alter the adsorption of Nap in soil, influencing both its mobility within the soil ecosystem and the environmental risk.

Analysis of the Adsorption Behavior of Phenanthrene on Microplastics Based on Two-Dimensional Correlation Spectroscopy

Microplastics (MPs), an emerging pollutant, widely co-occur with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment. Therefore, the interaction between MPs and PAHs has been the focus of much attention in recent years. In this study, three types of MPs, i.e., polypropylene, polystyrene, and poly(vinyl chloride), with the same main chain were selected as the adsorbents, with phenanthrene (PHE) as the representative PAHs. The adsorption mechanisms were explored from the perspective of the molecular spectral level using a combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) with a two-dimensional correlation technique. The adsorption kinetics results showed that the adsorption of PHE on the three MPs was dominated by chemisorption. However, the FT-IR analysis results indicated that no new covalent bond was created during the adsorption process. Based on the above research, a generalized two-dimensional (2D) correlation spectral technique was employed to investigate the sequence of functional group changes during the adsorption process for different MPs. Furthermore, the hybrid 2D correlation spectral technique explored the effect of side groups attached to the main chain molecules of MPs on adsorption. The results showed that for all three MPs, the functional groups in the side chain have a higher affinity for PHE, which is due to their higher hydrophobicity. This study provides a feasible way to analyze the adsorption of pollutants on MPs, and the results are important for understanding the adsorption interaction between PAHs and MPs in the aquatic environment.

Microplastics and Co-pollutants in soil and marine environments: Sorption and desorption dynamics in unveiling invisible danger and key to ecotoxicological risk assessment

Microplastics (MPs) and their co-pollutants pose significant threats to soil and marine environments, necessitating understanding of their colonization processes to combat the plastic pandemic and protect ecosystems. MPs can act as invisible carriers, concentrating and transporting pollutants, leading to a more widespread and potentially toxic impact than the presence of either MPs or the pollutants alone. Analyzing the sorption and desorption dynamics of MPs is crucial for understanding pollutants amplification and predicting the fate and transport of pollutants in soil and marine environments. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the sorption and desorption dynamics of MPs, highlighting the importance of considering these dynamics in ecotoxicological risk assessment of MPs pollution. The review identifies limitations of current frameworks that neglect these interactions and proposes incorporating sorption and desorption data into robust frameworks to improve the ability to predict ecological risks posed by MPs and co-pollutants in soil and marine environments. However, failure to address the interplay between sorption and desorption can result in underestimation of the true impact of MPs and co-pollutants, affecting livelihoods and agro-employments, and exacerbate poverty and community disputes (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 16). It can also affect food production and security (SDG 2), life below water and life on land (DSGs 14 and 15), cultural practices, and natural heritage (SDG 11.4). Hence, it is necessary to develop new approaches to ecotoxicological risk assessment that consider sorption and desorption processes in the interactions between the components in the framework to address the identified limitations.

The environmental effects of microplastics and microplastic derived dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments: A review

Currently, microplastics (MPs) have ubiquitously distributed in different aquatic environments. Due to the unique physicochemical properties, MPs exhibit a variety of environmental effects with the coexisted contaminants. MPs can not only alter the migration of contaminants via vector effect, but also affect the transformation process and fate of contaminants via environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs). The aging processes may enhance the interaction between MPs and co-existed contaminants. Thus, it is of great significance to review the aging mechanism of MPs and the influence of coexisted substances, the formation mechanism of EPFRs, environmental effects of MPs and relevant mechanism. Moreover, microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) may also influence the elemental biogeochemical cycles and the relevant environmental processes. However, the environmental implications of MP-DOM are rarely outlined. Finally, the knowledge gaps on environmental effects of MPs were proposed.

Plastisphere-hosted viruses: A review of interactions, behavior, and effects

Microbial communities, including bacteria, diatoms, and fungi, colonize plastic surfaces, forming biofilms known as the "plastisphere." Recent research has revealed that plastispheres also host a wide range of viruses, sparking interest in microbial ecology and virology. This shared habitat allows viruses to replicate, interact, infect, and spread, potentially impacting the environment and human health. Consequently, viruses attached to microplastics are now recognized to have broad effects on cellular and immune responses. However, the ecology and implications of viruses hosted in plastisphere habitats remain poorly understood, highlighting their fundamental importance as a subject of study. This review explores various pathways for virus attachment to plastispheres, factors influencing these interactions, their impacts within plastisphere and host-associated environments, and associated issues. It also summarizes current research and identifies knowledge gaps. We anticipate that this paper will help improve our predictive understanding of plastisphere viruses in natural settings and emphasizes the need for more research in real-world environments to advance the field.

Microplastics supply contaminants in food chain: non-negligible threat to health safety

The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) and organic pollutants (OPs) residues is commonly observed in diverse environmental settings, where their interactions can potentially alter the behavior, availability, and toxicity of OPs, thereby posing risks to ecosystems. Herein, we particularly emphasize the potential for bioaccumulation and the biomagnification effect of MPs in the presence of OPs within the food chain. Despite the ongoing influx of novel information, there exists a dearth of data concerning the destiny and consequences of MPs in the context of food pollution. Further endeavors are imperative to unravel the destiny and repercussions of MPs/OPs within food ecosystems and processing procedures, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the joint effect on human health and food quality. Nevertheless, the adsorption and desorption behavior of coexisting pollutants can be significantly influenced by MPs forming biofilms within real-world environments, including temperature, pH, and food constituents. A considerable portion of MPs tend to accumulate in the epidermis of vegetables and fruits, thus necessitating further research to comprehend the potential ramifications of MPs on the infiltration behavior of OPs on agricultural product surfaces.

Combined exposure of polystyrene microplastics and benzo[a]pyrene in rat: Study of the oxidative stress effects in the liver

Microplastics (MPs) and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) are prevalent environmental pollutants. Numerous studies have extensively reported their individual adverse effects on organisms. However, the combined effects and mechanisms of exposure in mammals remain unknown. Thus, this study aims to investigate the potential effects of oral administration of 0.5μm polystyrene (PS) MPs (1 mg/mL or 5 mg/mL), B[a]P (1 mg/mL or 5 mg/mL) and combined (1 mg/mL or 5 mg/mL) on 64 male SD rats by gavage method over 6-weeks. The results demonstrate that the liver histopathological examination showed that the liver lobules in the combined (5 mg/kg) group had blurred and loose boundaries, liver cord morphological disorders, and significant steatosis. The levels of AST, ALT, TC, and TG in the combined dose groups were significantly higher than those in the other groups, the combined (5 mg/kg) group had the lowest levels of antioxidant enzymes and the highest levels of oxidants. The expression of Nrf2 was lowest and the expression of P38, NF-κB, and TNF-α was highest in the combined (5 mg/kg) group. In conclusion, these findings indicate that the combination of PSMPs and B[a]P can cause the highest levels of oxidative stress and elicit markedly enhanced toxic effects, which cause severe liver damage.

Microplastics and PAHs mixed contamination: An in-depth review on the sources, co-occurrence, and fate in marine ecosystems

Microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic contaminants that have been found in marine ecosystems. This review aims to explore the sources and mechanisms of PAHs and MPs mixed contamination in marine environments. Understanding the released sources of PAHs and MPs is crucial for proposing appropriate regulations on the release of these contaminants. Additionally, the mechanisms of co-occurrence and the role of MPs in distributing PAHs in marine ecosystems were investigated in detail. Moreover, the chemical affinity between PAHs and MPs was proposed, highlighting the potential mechanisms that lead to their persistence in marine ecosystems. Moreover, we delve into the various factors influencing the co-occurrence, chemical affinity, and distribution of mixed contaminants in marine ecosystems. These factors, including environmental characteristics, MPs properties, PAHs molecular weight and hydrophobicity, and microbial interactions, were critically examined. The co-contamination raises concerns about the potential synergistic effects on their degradation and toxicity. Interesting, few studies have reported the enhanced photodegradation and biodegradation of contaminants under mixed contamination compared to their individual remediation. However, currently, the remediation strategies reported for PAHs and MPs mixed contamination are scarce and limited. While there have been some initiatives to remove PAHs and MPs individually, there is a lack of research specifically targeting the removal of mixed contaminants. This deficiency highlights the need for further investigation and the development of effective remediation approaches for the efficient remediation of PAHs and MPs from marine ecosystems.

Variation of Young's modulus suggested the main active sites for four different aging plastics at an early age time

Precisely determining which bonds are more sensitive when plastic aging occurs is critical to better understand the mechanisms of toxic release and microplastics formation. However, the relationship between chemical bonds with the active aging sites changes and the aging behavior of plastics at an early age is still unclear. Herein, the mechanical behavior of four polymers with different substituents was characterized by the high-resolution AFM. Young's modulus (YM) changes suggested that the cleavage of C-Cl bonds in PVC, C-H bonds in PE and PP, and C-F bonds in PTFE are the main active aging sites for plastic aging. The aging degree of the plastics followed the order of PVC > PP > PE > PTFE. Two aging periods exhibited different YM change behavior, the free radical and cross-linking resulted in a minor increase in YM during the initiation period. Numerous free radicals formed and cross-linking reaction happened, causing a significant increase in YM during the propagation period. Raman spectroscopy verified the formation of microplastics. This research develops promising strategies to quantitatively evaluate the aging degrees using AFM and establish the relationship between chemical bonds and mechanical behavior, which would provide new method to predict plastic pollution in actual environments.

Insight into the adsorption behaviors and bioaccessibility of three altered microplastics through three types of advanced oxidation processes

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can significantly alter the structural properties, environmental behaviors and human exposure level of microplastics in aquatic environments. Three typical microplastics (Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS)) and three AOPs (Heat-K2S2O8 (PDS), UV-H2O2, UV-peracetic acid (PAA)) were adopted to simulate the process when microplastics exposed to the sewage disposal system. 2-Nitrofluorene (2-NFlu) adsorption experiments found the equilibrium time decreased to 24 hours and the capacity increased up to 610 μg g-1, which means the adsorption efficiency has been greatly improved. The fitting results indicate the adsorption mechanism shifted from the partition dominant on pristine microplastic to the physical adsorption (pore filling) dominant. The alteration of specific surface area (21 to 152 m2 g-1), pore volume (0.003 to 0.148 cm3 g-1) and the particle size (123 to 16 μm) of microplastics after AOPs are implying the improvement for pore filling. Besides, the investigation of bioaccessibility is more complex, AOPs alter microplastic with more oxygen-containing functional groups and lower hydrophobicity detected by XPS and water contact angle, those modifications have increased the sorption concentration, especially in the human intestinal tract. Therefore, this indicates the actual exposure of organic compounds loaded in microplastic may be higher than in the pristine microplastic. This study can help to assess the human health risk of microplastic pollution in actual environments.

Revealing the long-term impact of photodegradation and fragmentation on HDPE in the marine environment: Origins of microplastics and dissolved organics

The extensive usage of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) materials in marine environments raises concerns about their potential contribution to plastic pollution. Various factors contribute to the degradation of HDPE in marine environments, including UV radiation, seawater hydrolysis, biodegradation, and mechanical stress. Despite their supposed long lifespans, there is still a lack of understanding about the long-term degradation mechanisms that cause weathering of seawater-exposed HDPE products. In this research, the impact of UV radiation on the degradation of HDPE pile sleeves was studied in natural as well as laboratory settings to isolate the UV effect. After nine years of exposure to the marine environment in natural settings, the HDPE pile sleeves exhibited an increase in oxygen-containing surface functional groups and more morphological changes compared to accelerated UVB irradiation in the laboratory. This indicated that combined non-UV mechanisms may play a major role in HDPE degradation than UV irradiation alone. However, UVB irradiation was found to release dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved nitrogen from HDPE pile sleeves, reaching levels of up to 15 mg/L and 2 mg/L, respectively. Our findings underscore the significance of taking into account both UV and non-UV degradation mechanisms when evaluating the role of HDPE in contributing to marine plastic pollution.

Microplastics as carriers of toxic pollutants: Source, transport, and toxicological effects

Microplastic pollution has emerged as a new environmental concern due to our reliance on plastic. Recent years have seen an upward trend in scholarly interest in the topic of microplastics carrying contaminants; however, the available review studies have largely focused on specific aspects of this issue, such as sorption, transport, and toxicological effects. Consequently, this review synthesizes the state-of-the-art knowledge on these topics by presenting key findings to guide better policy action toward microplastic management. Microplastics have been reported to absorb pollutants such as persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, and antibiotics, leading to their bioaccumulation in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Hydrophobic interactions are found to be the predominant sorption mechanism, especially for organic pollutants, although electrostatic forces, van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and pi-pi interactions are also noteworthy. This review reveals that physicochemical properties of microplastics, such as size, structure, and functional groups, and environmental compartment properties, such as pH, temperature, and salinity, influence the sorption of pollutants by microplastic. It has been found that microplastics influence the growth and metabolism of organisms. Inadequate methods for collection and analysis of environmental samples, lack of replication of real-world settings in laboratories, and a lack of understanding of the sorption mechanism and toxicity of microplastics impede current microplastic research. Therefore, future research should focus on filling in these knowledge gaps.

Interfacial quantum chemical characterization of aromatic organic matter adsorption on oxidized microplastic surfaces

Examining the adsorption efficiency of individual contaminants on microplastics (MPs) is resource-intensive and time-consuming. To address this challenge, combined laboratory adsorption experiments with model simulations were performed to investigate the adsorption capacities and mechanisms of MPs before and after aging. Our adsorption experiments revealed that aged polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs exhibited increased adsorption capacity for benzene, phenol, and naphthalene. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) simulations provided insights into changes in adsorption sites, adsorption energy, and charge density on MPs. The π bond of the benzene ring emerged as a pivotal factor in the adsorption process, with van der Waals forces exerting dominant influence. For instance, the adsorption energy of benzene on pristine PE was -0.01879 eV. When oxidized groups, such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, and carboxyl, on the surface of aged PE became the adsorption sites, the adsorption energy increased to -0.06976, -0.04781, and -0.04903 eV, respectively. Regions with unoxidized functional groups also exhibited higher adsorption energies than pristine PE. These results indicated that aged PE had a stronger affinity for benzene compared to pristine PE, enhancing its adsorption. Charge density difference and energy density of states corroborated this observation, revealing larger π-bond charge accumulation areas for benzene on aged PE, suggesting stronger dipole interactions and enhanced adsorption. Similar trends were observed for phenol and naphthalene. In summary, the DFT calculations aligned with the adsorption experiment findings, confirming the effectiveness of simulation methods in predicting changes in the adsorption performance of aged MPs.

Mechanistic insight into the role of typical microplastics in chlorination disinfection: Precursors and adsorbents of both MP-DOM and DBPs

Microplastics (MPs) in drinking water are predominantly < 10 µm. The leaching of MPs derived dissolved organic matters (MP-DOM) from 5 µm polypropylene MPs (PP-MPs) and polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) and the formation of MP-DOM derived disinfection byproducts during chlorination disinfection were first investigated. Comparably, PS-MPs are more vulnerable to chlorination and the primary attacks are on para C in aromatic side-chains via electrophilic Cl-substitution and oxidation by two-electron transfer. The O/C and Cl/C ratio of polystyrene MPs was linear and exponential versus initial available Cl2 concentrations, respectively. The significant PS-DOM leaching was observed with initial available Cl2 of 4.0 mg/L (USEPA recommended upper dose). As the initial available Cl2 concentration increased to 8.0 mg/L, the adsorption of chloro-phenolic-components of 200 Daltons in PS-DOM by 5 µm PS-MPs was observed for the first time. Trichloromethane (TCM) was identified as the dominant disinfection byproduct with a formation potential of 60.3 ± 7.8 and 73.7 ± 9.8 μg/mg for PS-DOM and PP-DOM, respectively. The derived TCM could adsorb onto PS-MPs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Extreme chlorination could reduce the maximal adsorption capacity of TCM on 5 µm PS-MPs from 196.68 ± 48.66 to 146.02 ± 32.98 μg/g. Thus, PS-MPs act as precursors and carriers of TCM in chlorination.

Microplastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems: Global implications and sustainable solutions

Although MPs have been widely detected in aquatic environments, their presence in terrestrial ecosystems remains largely unexplored. This review examines the multifaceted issues of MPs pollution in terrestrial ecosystem, covering various aspects from additives in plastics to global legislation and sustainable solutions. The study explores the widespread distribution of MPs worldwide and their potential antagonistic interactions with co-occurring contaminants, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of their environmental implications. The influence of MPs on soil and plants is discussed, shedding light on the potential consequences for terrestrial ecosystems and agricultural productivity. The aging mechanisms of MPs, including photo and thermal aging, are elucidated, along with the factors influencing their aging process. Furthermore, the review provides an overview of global legislation addressing plastic waste, including bans on specific plastic items and levies on single-use plastics. Sustainable solutions for MPs pollution are proposed, encompassing upstream approaches such as bioplastics, improved waste management practices, and wastewater treatment technologies, as well as downstream methods like physical and biological removal of MPs. The importance of international collaboration, comprehensive legislation, and global agreements is underscored as crucial in tackling this pervasive environmental challenge. This review may serve as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders, providing a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact and potential risks associated with MPs.

Efficient adsorption of organic pollutants phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) utilizing magnetite functionalized covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs): A promising future material for industrial applications

The utilization of phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) as the major component in plastic and its derivative industry has raised concerns among the public due to the harmful effects caused by these organic pollutants. These pollutants are found to exhibit unique physicochemical properties that allow the pollutants to have prolonged existence in the environment, thus causing damage to the environment. Since phthalates and bisphenol A are used in a variety of industrial applications, the industry must recover these compounds from its water before releasing the pollutants into the environment. As a result, these materials have a promising future in industrial applications. Therefore, the discovery of new quick and reliable abatement technologies is important to ensure that these organic pollutants can be detected and removed from the water sources. This review highlights the use of the adsorption method to remove phthalates and BPA from water sources by employing novel modified adsorbent magnetite functionalized covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs). MCOFs is a new class of porous materials that have demonstrated promising features in a variety of applications due to their adaptable structures, significant surface areas, configurable porosity, and customizable chemistry. The structural attributes, functional design strategies, and specialized for environmental applications before offering some closing thoughts and suggestions for further research were discussed in this paper in addition to developing an innovative solution for the industry to the accessibility for clean water.

Adsorption behaviors and bioavailability of tetrabromobisphenol A in the presence of polystyrene microplastic in soil: Effect of microplastics aging

Microplastics, a kind of emerging pollutant, have become a global environmental research hotspot in recent years due to its wide distribution in soil and its impact on soil ecosystems. However, little information is available on the interactions between microplastics and organic contaminants in soil, especially after microplastic aging. The impact of polystyrene (PS) microplastic aging on the sorption of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in soil and the desorption characteristics of TBBPA-loaded microplastics in different environments were studied. The results showed a significant increase of 76.3% in adsorption capacity of TBBPA onto PS microplastics after aging for 96 h. Based on the results of characterization analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the mechanisms of TBBPA adsorption changed mainly from hydrophobic and π-π interactions on pristine PS microplastics to hydrogen bond and π-π interactions on aged PS microplastics. The presence of PS microplastics increased the TBBPA sorption capacity onto soil-PS microplastics system and significantly altered the distribution of TBBPA on soil particles and PS microplastics. The high TBBPA desorption over 50% from aged PS microplastics in simulated earthworm gut environment suggested that TBBPA contamination combined with PS microplastics might pose a higher risk to macroinvertebrates in soil. Overall, these findings contribute to the understanding of impact of PS microplastic aging in soil on the environmental behaviors of TBBPA, and provide valuable reference for evaluating the potential risk posed by the co-existence of microplastics with organic contaminants in soil ecosystems.

The carrier effect mechanism of butachlor in water by three typical microplastics

Butachlor (BUT) is a widely used herbicide that can cause environmental problems when used excessively. BUT has been found to exist in large quantities in the water environment so far. As an agricultural pre-emergent herbicide, BUT can enter the water environment through multiple channels and cause pollution. This study investigated the mechanism of three types of microplastics (MPs): polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to remove BUT from water. The adsorption behavior between MPs and BUT under different factors, namely pH, salt ion concentration, and aging, was investigated. This study further investigated the desorption and aging of BUT-adsorbed MPs. In this research, the adsorption capacity of BUT by PE, PP, and PVC are 13.65 μg/g, 14.82 μg/g, and 18.88 μg/g, respectively, and the order of carrier effect was: PVC>PP>PE. Experiments show that MPs have low adsorption performance on the microgram level for BUT. The adsorption behavior of PE, PP, and PVC on BUT conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating the presence of physical and chemical adsorption. The Langmuir isotherm model fits well, indicating that the adsorption is a single-layer adsorption process. The pH value causes slight fluctuations in the overall carrier effect. Low concentration of salt ions can inhibit the carrier effect, and high concentration will promote the interaction between MPs and BUT. Aging experiments show that the carrier effect of the original materials was higher than the adsorption capacity of hydrogen peroxide and MPs after acid aging, and acid aging can cause the adsorption capacity to drop significantly.

Adsorption behaviors of chlorpyrifos on UV aged microplastics

Both non-degradable and biodegradable plastics can act as vectors of diverse organic pollutants. In this study, two types of biodegradable microplastics [poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA)] and one type of non-degradable microplastics [polypropylene (PP)] were selected to investigate the impacts of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for one month on microplastics surface modification and their adsorption behaviors for chlorpyrifos (CPF). The study revealed that PBAT held the largest adsorption capacity, and PLA held the fastest adsorption rate. The UV irradiation diminished the adsorption capacities on PLA and PP but enhanced the adsorption capacities on PBAT. The adsorption capacity normalized by specific surface area revealed that specific surface area was the dominant factor for affecting the adsorption capacities on PP and PLA after UV irradiation. These findings further clarify the interaction between CPF and microplastics, and provide a theoretical basis for assessing the ecological risk of microplastics in water.

Investigation of interfacial adsorption between microplastics and methylparaben in aqueous solution

Microplastics and parabens are considered to be a global contaminants, especially in the aquatic ecosystem. The interfacial interaction between four types of microplastics including polystyrene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinyl chloride, and methylparaben were investigated in this study. The results showed that molecular layer dominates the adsorption, with the rate significantly affected by both internal diffusion and external diffusion. Among the four types, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride showed the smallest and biggest adsorption capability, with the values were 0.656 and 1.269 mg g^-1, respectively. For the adsorption capability, smaller particle size and higher pH value possessed positive effects. However, the existence of metal ions could inhibit the adsorption process, except for a weak promotion at low salinity. Physical adsorption effects, such as electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond formation, and covalent bond formation, had been identified that dominated the adsorption. This finding could be served as a speculative foundation for the further study of the toxicity, migration, and ecological risk assessment of microplastics in aquatic ecosystem.

Insights into adsorption mechanisms of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on common microplastic particles: Experimental studies and modeling

Nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) and microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that pose a threat to the aquatic ecosystem. Knowledge of the NPAHs and MPs interaction will help the understanding of their fate and risks in natural environment. Here, the adsorption behavior and mechanism of typical NPAHs on microplastics were investigated. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm data showed that the adsorption of NPAHs was controlled by chemical adsorption and hydrophobic partition, because of excellent fit of kinetic and isothermal equations (R² > 0.9). The adsorption capacity (587-744 μg g^-1) was largely dependent on the hydrophobicity of NPAHs. The experiment of environmental factors confirmed the important role of pollutant hydrophobicity, with 1-Npyr of the highest hydrophobicity having the greatest adsorption on MPs (adsorption rate >90%) and less affected by solution pH and ionic strength (changer <5%). In the mixture system, MPs displayed high adsorption capacity for each compound; Interestingly, because compounds with smaller size were easy to occupy the adsorption sites in the pores of MPs, the adsorption of 2-Nflu (724 μg g^-1) was even greater than that of 9-Nant (713 μg g^-1) and 1-Npyr (703 μg g^-1). The model calculation of adsorption also shows that there is surface adsorption and hydrophobic distribution in the adsorption process. The findings provide new insights into the interactions of MPs with organic pollutants in complex environments.

Adsorption of typical natural organic matter on microplastics in aqueous solution: Kinetics, isotherm, influence factors and mechanism

With rapid urbanization, microplastics and natural organic matters (NOMs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environment, and microplastics could act as carriers for organic matters in the aqueous solution and may pose a potential risk. In this study, the adsorption behaviors and mechanism of typical NOM, humic acid (HA), on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics were investigated. Various influence factors such as solution pH, ions species and concentrations, particle size, and coexisting surfactants were studied. The results suggested that HA adsorption onto PVC and PS was low pH-dependent, and ion species and concentrations have a significant impact on the adsorption capacity. In addition, the particle size of PVC and PS microplastics exhibited a significant correlation with HA adsorption, and the adsorption process was influenced by the surfactant species and concentrations. Moreover, the adsorption behaviors of HA in different real water environments were tested, and UV aging exhibited the opposite effects on adsorption capacity of PVC and PS. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of HA onto PVC and PS were explored, indicating halogen bonding, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction play important roles in the adsorption process.

Co-occurrence of microplastics and organic/inorganic contaminants in organisms living in aquatic ecosystems: A review

Most studies on microplastics (MPs) and organisms, regardless of the MPs type and their presence in the environment and organisms, have been performed on a laboratory scale. In this review, reports of simultaneous analysis of the abundance of MPs and organic/inorganic contaminants in aquatic organisms in the natural environment have been collected and bibliometric analysis was performed. Biological and environmental factors affecting MPs absorption by organisms were discussed. The majority of microplastics were identified as fibrous and black with a small size (<500 μm). A positive correlation was reported between microplastic numbers and organic/inorganic contaminants in the tissue of some species. The most positive linear relationship between heavy metal and MPs was reported for Heniochus acuminatus from the Gulf of Mannar. To preserve biodiversity and the risks of transferring MPs and contaminants to aquatic organisms and humans, it is necessary to control microplastic contamination.

Sorption and desorption of bisphenols on commercial plastics and the effect of UV aging

Plastics gradually degrade in the natural environment from the effect of irradiation, which can change the surface properties of plastics and affect the migration behaviour of pollutants. Up to now, studies on the sorption/desorption behaviour of organic pollutants on aged plastics are still limited. In this study, several types of commercial plastics (polyurethane (PU), polyamide (PA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), expanded polystyrene (EPS)) were selected to investigate the sorption and release behaviour for four kinds of bisphenols (bisphenol-F, A, B, AP). The results from Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed evidence of oxidization and surface cracks of plastics after irradiation. The sorption behaviour for both fresh and aged plastics were dominated by hydrophobicity. In addition, the electrostatic force, H-bonding interaction, and π-π interaction were also the important factors impacting the sorption process. The desorption kinetics behaviour indicates that desorption becomes faster after aging. Hydrophobicity is also an important factor that affects desorption behaviour. This study showed that sorption capacity for most fresh and aged plastics was enhanced by the impact of salinity and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Increased temperature could increase the desorption of bisphenols on both fresh and aged plastics, which illustrated that warm environments would promote more pollutants be released from plastics to water bodies.

Combined toxicity of micro/nanoplastics loaded with environmental pollutants to organisms and cells: Role, effects, and mechanism

Micro/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) are ubiquitous in the environment and living organisms have been exposed to these substances for a long time. When MPs/NPs enter different organisms, they transport various pollutants, including heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, drugs, bacteria, and viruses, from the environment. On this basis, this paper summarizes the combined toxicity induced by MPs/NPs accumulating contaminants from the environment and entering organisms through a systematic review of 162 articles. Moreover, the factors influencing toxic interactions are critically discussed, thus highlighting the dominant role of the relative concentrations of contaminants in the combined toxic effects. Furthermore, for the first time, we describe the threats posed by MPs/NPs combined with other pollutants to human health, as well as their cytotoxic behavior and mechanism. We found that the "Trojan horse" effect of nanoplastics can increase the bioaccessibility of environmental pollutants, thus increasing the carcinogenic risk to humans. Simultaneously, the complex pollutants entering the cells are observed to be constantly dissociated due to the transport of lysosomes. However, current research on the intracellular release of MP/NP-loaded pollutants is relatively poor, which hinders the accurate in vivo toxicity assessment of combined pollutants. Based on the findings of our critical review, we recommend analyzing the toxic effects by clarifying the dose relationship of each component pollutant in cells, which is challenging yet crucial to exploring the toxic mechanism of combined pollution. In the future, our findings can contribute to establishing a system modeling the complete load-translocation toxicological mechanism of MP/NP-based composite pollutants.

Adsorption of Diclofenac Sodium by Aged Degradable and Non-Degradable Microplastics: Environmental Effects, Adsorption Mechanisms

Microplastics (MPs) are novel pollutants, which can carry toxic contaminants and are released in biota and accumulate. The adsorption behavior of MPs and aged MPs has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, the aging process of polystyrene (PS) and poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) plastics under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at a high temperature and their adsorption properties for the contaminant diclofenac sodium (DCF) before and after aging was investigated. There are many factors affecting the adsorption capacity of MPs. In this experiment, three aspects of MPs, organic pollutants, and environmental factors are explored. The Freundlich model as well as the pseudosecondary kinetic model is more applicable to the process of DCF adsorption by MPs. The main effects of adsorption of organic pollutants by MPs are electrostatic interactions, hydrogen-halogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. The adsorption capacity of the UV-aged MPs on DCF is significantly enhanced, and the order of adsorption capacity is Q(A-PBAT) (27.65 mg/g) > Q (A-PS) (23.91 mg/g) > Q (PBAT) (9.30 mg/g) > Q (PS) (9.21 mg/g). The results show that more active sites are generated on the surface of MPs after aging, which can enhance their adsorption capacity for organic pollutants. This adsorption mechanism will increase their role as contaminant carriers in the aquatic food chain.

Interactions of microplastics and soil pollutants in soil-plant systems

In recent years, increasing studies have been reported on characterization and detection of microplastics (MPs), and their interactions with organic pollutants (OPs) and heavy metals (HMs) in soils. However, a comprehensive review on the characteristics and factors that influence MPs distribution in soils, the sorption characteristics and mechanisms of soil contaminants by MPs, especially the interactions of MPs and their complexes with pollutants in the soil-plant systems remains rarely available at present. This review focuses on the sorption features and mechanisms of pollutants by MPs in soil and discussed the effects of MPs and their complexing with pollutants on soil properties, microbe and plants. The polarity of MPs significantly influenced the sorption of OPs, and different sorption mechanisms are involved for the hydrophobic and hydrophilic OPs. The sorption of OPs on MPs in soils is different from that in water. Aging of MPs can promote the sorption and migration of contaminants. The enhanced effects of biofilm in microplastisphere on the sorption of pollutants by MPs are critical, and interactions of soil environment-MPs-microbe-HMs-antibiotics increase the potential pathogens and larger release of resistance genes. The coexistence of HMs and MPs affected the growth of plants and the uptake of HMs and MPs by the plants. Moreover, the type, dose, shape and particle size of MPs have important influences on their interactions with pollutants and subsequent effects on soil properties, microbial activities and plant growth. This review also pointed out some knowledge gaps and constructive countermeasures to promote future research in this field.

Vector effect of polystyrene film microplastic in enriching Sudan III from natural particles and its burst release into simulated digestive fluid containing fatty acid

Microplastics (MPs) have aroused tremendous attentions because of their ability in accumulating contaminants from adjacent environment. However, their capability of concentrating hydrophobic organic contaminants might be influenced by huge amounts of coexisting natural particles (NaPs). Yet, our knowledge about the relative concentrating capability of MPs versus NaPs is still rare. Herein, the distribution behavior of several hydrophobic pollutants was studied in simplified MPs/NaPs/pollutant/water quaternary systems. We found that 1-(4-(phenylzao)phenyl)azo-2-naphthol (Sudan III) had similar distribution behavior with many hydrophobic pollutants and thus was used as a model pollutant. Polyethylene (PE) film debris derived from disposable plastic wrap was the most efficient microplastic which concentrated tens of times Sudan III than coexisting NaPs including bentonite, kaolin, sawdust, and diatomite. An enrichment coefficient of over 1000 times was observed in the case of PE film debris versus quartz sand. The concentrating capability of PE film MPs was found approximately equal to biochar particles. MPs seem to have limited contribution on the long distance transportation of hydrophobic organic pollutants. However, notably, over 70% of the adsorbed Sudan III could be released back into water within 0.5 h in the presence of 0.5% sodium oleate, which is a common amphipathic matter forming micelles in digestive fluid. Microplastics might play an important vector-like role in increasing the biological accumulation of hydrophobic pollutants via intestine digestive absorption. Due to much bigger quantity of NaPs, the relative concentrating effect of MPs to hydrophobic organic pollutants over NaPs is possibly a more reasonable reference when considering their potential ecological risk.

Transport of emerging organic ultraviolet (UV) filters in ceramic membranes: Role of polyethylene (PE) microplastics

Microplastics can be considered potential carriers of emerging organic ultraviolet (UV) filters due to their considerable adsorption capacity in wastewater treatment. The adsorption behavior of organic UV filters, which are commonly contained in personal care products to preserve the skin against UV radiation, onto polyethylene (PE) microplastics were systematically studied to investigate their combined effects. Kinetics and isotherm analyses revealed that the adsorption of four organic UV filters onto PE microplastic surfaces followed a multi-rate and a heterogeneous multi-layer pattern. Several factors including salinity, microplastic size, and dosage also influenced the adsorption efficiency due to hydrophobic interactions. A bench-scale cross-flow ceramic membrane filtration experiment was investigated to evaluate the role of PE microplastics on the retention performance of organic UV filters. The retentions for organic UV filters were 34.2%-37.8% in the non-existence of PE microplastics. Conversely, organic UV filter retentions were significantly increased up to 82.2%-97.9% when they were adsorbed onto the PE microplastics, which were almost completely retained by the ceramic membrane. Therefore, organic UV filters can likely migrate and eventually be carried by PE microplastics, thus increasing the retention of both emerging organic UV filters and microplastics prior to discharge from wastewater treatment facilities.

A critical review on interaction of microplastics with organic contaminants in soil and their ecological risks on soil organisms

The pollution of microplastics (MPs) in soil has become a global environmental problem. Due to high sorption capacity and persistence in environment, the MPs exhibit combined effects with organic pollutants in soil, thereby posing a potential risk to soil ecology and human health. However, limited reviews are available on this subject. Therefore, in response to this issue, this review provides an in-depth account of interaction of MPs with organic contaminants in soil and the combined risks to soil environment. The sorption of organic contaminants onto MPs is mainly through hydrophobic and π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, pore filling and electrostatic and van der Waals forces. The intrinsic characteristics of MPs, organic contaminants and soil are the key factors influencing the sorption of organic pollutants onto MPs. Importantly, the presence of MPs changes the sorption, degradation and transport behaviors of organic contaminants in soil, and affects the toxic effects of organic contaminants on soil organisms including animals, plants and soil microorganisms through synergistic or antagonistic effects. Source control, policy implementation and plastic removal are the main preventive and control measures to reduce soil MPs pollution. Finally, priorities for future research are proposed, such as field investigations of co-pollution, contribution of plastisphere to organic contaminant degradation, and mechanisms of MPs effects on organic contaminant toxicity.

Sorption of selected pharmaceutical compounds on polyethylene microplastics: Roles of pH, aging, and competitive sorption

Microplastics (MPs) as the carrier of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments have been concerned in recent years. However, the influences of environmental factors on the sorption of pharmaceuticals onto MPs, particularly the effect of the simultaneous sorption by MPs of different pharmaceuticals in multi-solute systems are still unclear. This study investigated the influences of pH, aging of MPs, and competition of pharmaceuticals on the sorptions of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), propranolol (PRP), and sertraline (SER) onto polyethylene MPs. In the 96 h pH-dependent experiments, the sorptions of the three pharmaceuticals were mainly driven by hydrophobic interaction. Besides, the ionization states of the three pharmaceuticals varied with the pH ranging from 2.00 to 12.00, and electrostatic interaction would affect the sorption affinities of the pharmaceuticals in different ionization states. In the aged MPs experiments, the MPs aged by UV irradiation showed a stronger sorption capacity than the pristine ones. Across the MPs under different UV irradiation durations, the 6 d aged MPs showed the highest sorption percentages of 23.0% and 17.6% for SER and PRP, respectively; for SMX, the highest sorption percentage of 5.4% was recorded with the 10 d aged MPs. In the multi-solute systems, the sorption kinetics of the three pharmaceuticals fit well with the pseudo-second-order model. The sorption quantities of the three pharmaceuticals onto MPs followed the order of SER cations (18.70 μg g^-1) > SMX anions (7.83 μg g^-1) > PRP cations (3.80 μg g^-1) at pH 7.00. The good fitting of the Freundlich model suggested a multilayer sorption of the three pharmaceuticals onto MPs. The SER with higher hydrophobicity would preferentially be adsorbed onto MPs and influenced the subsequently sorption processes of the other pharmaceuticals via electrostatic interactions. This may change the environmental fate of the contaminants, which should be carefully considered in future work.

The potential of polyethylene microplastics to transport copper in aquatic systems: Adsorption and desorption studies

Heavy metals and microplastics are two types of general contaminants that can cause significant damage to water systems and organisms. However, the interaction of heavy metal ions with microplastic in aquatic systems received less attention compared with that of organic contaminants. This study aims to explore the interaction of copper (II) ions with microplastic (polyethylene) in aquatic systems. The adsorption experiments were performed by varying several operational parameters including equilibrium pH, initial Cu (II) concentrations, and contact times. The microplastic was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared. The results confirmed the porous nature of the microplastic surface and the existence of various binding sites. The maximum Cu (II) uptake by microplastic was recorded as 1.23 mg/g at pH 5, according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The experimental isotherm data exhibited a good fit to the Toth model, followed by the Langmuir and Freundlich equations, according to the correlation coefficient and %error values. The pseudo-first kinetics equation showed a better fit to copper (II) kinetics data compared with the pseudo-second kinetics equation. Elution of copper (II) ions from copper (II)-loaded microplastic was attempted using several elutants, and the results indicated that 0.01 M HNO₃ performed well with elution efficiency over 99.5%. Thus, the elution experiments furnished proof that Cu-loaded microplastic may leach Cu (II) ions under rich acidic conditions, thereby aiding the transport of Cu (II) ions into the digestive tracts of aquatic organisms. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Polyethylene microplastics showed potential to sorb copper ions. The mechanism was electrostatic interaction between microplastics and metal ions. Maximum copper adsorption by microplastic was recorded as 1.23 mg/g. Once desorbed, Cu(II) transferred into the digestive tracts of aquatic organisms.

Binding Between Antibiotics and Polystyrene Nanoparticles Examined by NMR

Elucidating the interactions between plastic nanoparticles and small molecules is important to understanding these interactions as they occur in polluted waterways. For example, plastic that breaks down into micro- and nanoscale particles will interact with small molecule pollutants that are also present in contaminated waters. Other components of natural water, such as dissolved organic matter, will also influence these interactions. Here we use a collection of complementary NMR techniques to examine the binding between polystyrene nanoparticles and three common antibiotics, belonging to a class of molecules that are expected to be common in polluted water. Through examination of proton NMR signal intensity, relaxation times, saturation-transfer difference (STD) NMR, and competition STD-NMR, we find that the antibiotics have binding strengths in the order amoxicillin < metronidazole ≪ levofloxacin. Levofloxacin is able to compete for binding sites, preventing the other two antibiotics from binding. The presence of tannic acid disrupts the binding between levofloxacin and the polystyrene nanoparticles, but does not influence the binding between metronidazole and these nanoparticles.

Theoretical investigation on the interactions of microplastics with a SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragment and their potential impacts on viral transport and exposure

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic spread across the world and remains difficult to control. Environmental pollution and habitat conditions do facilitate SARS-CoV-2 transmission as well as increase the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2. The coexistence of microplastics (MPs) with SARS-CoV-2 affects the viral behavior in the indoor and outdoor environment, and it is essential to study the interactions between MPs and SARS-CoV-2 because they both are ubiquitously present in our environment. To determine the mechanisms underlying the impact of MPs on SARS-CoV-2, we used molecular dynamic simulations to investigate the molecular interactions between five MPs and a SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragment at temperatures ranging from 223 to 310 K in vacuum and in water. We furthermore compared the interactions of MPs and SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragment to the performance of SARS-CoV-1 and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA fragments in interacting with the MPs. The interaction affinity between the MPs and the SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragment was found to be greater than the affinity between the MPs and the SARS-CoV-1 or HBV RNA fragments, independent of the environmental media, temperature, and type of MPs. The mechanisms of the interaction between the MPs and the SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragment involved electrostatic and hydrophobic processes, and the interaction affinity was associated with the inherent structural parameters (i.e., molecular volume, polar surface area, and molecular topological index) of the MPs monomers. Although the evidence on the infectious potential of SARS-CoV-2 RNA is not fully understood, humans are exposed to MPs via their lungs, and the strong interaction with the gene materials of SARS-CoV-2 likely affects the exposure of humans to SARS-CoV-2.

The effect of adsorption on the fate of colloidal polystyrene microplastics in drinking water distribution system pipe scales

With microplastics (MPs) being continuously found in various environments, the pollution of water supply systems by MPs is receiving increasing attention. As the sediment in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs), pipe scales act as the interface for complex reactions between bulk water and pipe surfaces. Consequently, the fate of MPs in pipe scales requires exploration, especially colloidal MPs. In this study, MPs were detected in different pipe scale layers, with concentrations of 0.32-3.10 items g^-1. Subsequently, the adsorption interaction mechanisms between pipe scales and colloidal polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) were investigated through batch adsorption experiments. The findings indicated that pipe scales showed a potential adsorption capacity for PSMPs. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms results demonstrated that the PSMP adsorption process was physically dominant and complicated. van der Waals and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and pore filling were the main adsorption mechanisms. These results verify that colloidal MPs can be adsorbed by pipe scales, demonstrating that pipe scales play an essential role in the fate of colloidal MPs in DWDSs and the quality and security of drinking water. The secondary release of MPs from pipe scales is also worthy of attention due to the environmental and health risks.

Microplastics-sorbed phenanthrene and its derivatives are highly bioaccessible and may induce human cancer risks

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in environmental media and human diets and can enrich organic contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives. The bioaccessibilities and triggering cancer risks of MP-sorbed PAHs and PAH derivatives are closely linked with human health, which, however, were rarely focused on. This study explored the sorption behaviors of phenanthrene (PHE) and PHE derivatives on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) MPs, and assessed their bioaccessibilities in gastrointestinal fluids as well as their inducing human cancer risks. PE MPs harbored the highest sorption capacity, secondly the PP MPs, then the PS ones. Sorption of PHE and PHE derivatives on MPs was positively correlated with their hydrophobicities. The bioaccessibilities of sorbed PHE and PHE derivatives could reach 53.59 %±0.46 %-90.28 %±0.92 % in gastrointestinal fluids and 81.34 %±0.77 %-98.72 %±1.44 % in gastrointestinal fluids with the addition of Tenax (more close to the bioavailability). The hydrophobicities also controlled the bioaccessibilities of PHE and PHE derivatives in gastric fluids, and those in intestinal fluids with Tenax for PS MPs. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values for PHE, PHE-Cl, and PHE-NO2 on MPs at tested concentrations were all higher than the USEPA-suggested safety limit (10-6), and most of them were even higher than 10-4, which thus indicates serious cancer risks. This study promoted our understanding of the potential health threats posed by organic pollutant-bearing MPs in the environment.

Interactions of microplastics with organic, inorganic and bio-pollutants and the ecotoxicological effects on terrestrial and aquatic organisms

As emerging contaminants, microplastics (MPs) have attracted global attention. They are a potential risk to organisms, ecosystems and human health. MPs are characterized by small particle sizes, weak photodegradability, and are good environmental carriers. They can physically adsorb or chemically react with organic, inorganic and bio-pollutants to generate complex binary pollutants or change the environmental behaviors of these pollutants. We systematically reviewed the following aspects of MPs: (i) Adsorption of heavy metals and organic pollutants by MPs and the key environmental factors affecting adsorption behaviors; (ii) Enrichment and release of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) on MPs and the effects of MPs on ARG migration in the environment; (iii) Formation of "plastisphere" and interactions between MPs and microorganisms; (iv) Ecotoxicological effects of MPs and their co-exposures with other pollutants. Finally, scientific knowledge gaps and future research areas on MPs are summarized, including standardization of study methodologies, ecological effects and human health risks of MPs and their combination with other pollutants.

Competition adsorption of malachite green and rhodamine B on polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride microplastics in aqueous environment

Microplastics (MPs) will cause compound pollution by combining with organic pollutants in the aqueous environment. It is important for environmental protection to study the adsorption mechanism of different MPs for pollutants. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of malachite green (MG) and rhodamine B (RhB) on polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were studied in single systems and binary systems, separately. The results show that in single system, the adsorptions of between MPs for pollutants (MG and RhB) are more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model, the adsorption capacity of both MPs for MG is greater than that of RhB. The adsorption capacities of MG and RhB were 7.68 mg/g and 2.83 mg/g for PVC, 4.52 mg/g and 1.27 mg/g for PE. In the binary system, there exist competitive adsorption between MG and RhB on MPs. And the adsorption capacities of PVC for the two dyes are stronger than those of PE. This is attributed to the strong halogen-hydrogen bond between the two dyes and PVC, and the larger specific surface area of PVC. This study revealed the interaction and competitive adsorption mechanism between binary dyes and MPs, which is of great significance for understanding the interactions between dyes and MPs in the multi-component systems.

Interface behavior changes of weathered polystyrene with ciprofloxacin in seawater environment

With the progress of research on micro-nano plastics, the weathering degradation process in the natural environment has gradually become the focus of academic discussion. This study adopted the Fenton immersion method to accelerate the simulation of the weathering process of microplastics in nature, and explored the interface behavior of the weathered microplastics and hydrophilic antibiotics. It was found that the weathered polystyrene (PS) has a smaller crystallinity, increased oxygen-containing functional groups, and cracks appear on the surface, making it more likely to be weathered. At the same time, the rougher surface and stronger hydrophilicity of the weathered PS particles made it easier to adsorb hydrophilic antibiotics. Subsequent studies showed that the adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CIP·HCl) by weathered PS is much larger than that of original PS particles, whose maximum adsorption is 5.45 mg/g in the isotherm experiments. We found that the adsorption behavior of weathered PS particles with CIP in seawater would be weakened in the real seawater environment and humic acid, which might be due to the competitive adsorption of CIP by various ions. Further studies have shown that changes in the ionic strength and pH of the solution also affected the adsorption behavior to varying degrees. The results of dynamic adsorption were the same as the static adsorption, and the adsorption rate and capacity of weathered PS particles were enhanced compared with the original particles. The results of this article not only provided a data reference for studying the weathering process of microplastics but also helped to explore the ultimate fate of microplastics.

Plastic particles in medicine: A systematic review of exposure and effects to human health

Single-use plastics (SUPs) have become an essential constituent of our daily life. It is being exploited in numerous pharmaceutical and healthcare applications. Despite their advantages and widespread use in the pharma and medical sectors, the potential clinical problems of plastics, especially the release of micro-nanoplastics (MNPs) and additives from medical plastics (e.g. bags, containers, and administrative sets) and sorption of drugs remain understudied. Certainly, the MNPs are multifaceted stressors that cause detrimental effects to the ecosystem and human health. The origin and persistence of MNPs in pharmaceutical products, their administration to humans, endurance and possible health implication, translocation, and excretion have not been reviewed in detail. The prime focus of this article is to conduct a systematic review on the leaching of MNPs and additives from pharmaceutical containers/administrative sets and their interaction with the pharmaceutical constituents. This review also explores the primary and secondary routes of MNPs entry from healthcare plastic products and their potential health hazards to humans. Furthermore, the fate of plastic waste generated in hospitals, their disposal, and associated MNPs release to the environment, along with preventive, and alternative measures are discussed herein.

Adsorption of Tannic Acid and Macromolecular Humic/Fulvic Acid onto Polystyrene Microplastics: A Comparison Study

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been widely reported to influence the environmental behavior of microplastics (MPs), but little is known about the properties and mechanisms of interaction between specific DOM components and MPs. Here, we studied the adsorption of three representative DOM components (humic acid, HA; fulvic acid, FA; and tannic acid, TA) on polystyrene (PS) MPs in batch adsorption experiments. Results revealed that HA/FA adsorption was greater under acidic conditions, while higher TA adsorption on PS was found at pH 4 and 6. The divalent cation (Ca2+) exerted a more prominent role in enhancing HA, FA, and TA adsorption on PS than did monovalent ones (K+ and Na+). The adsorption process fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The adsorption site heterogeneity was evaluated using the site energy distribution analysis based on the Freundlich model. The greater binding ability of HA on the PS surface caused a more negatively charged surface than FA/TA, as reflected by Zeta potential values. The findings of this study not only provide valuable information about the adsorption behavior and interaction processes of various DOM components on PS MPs, but also aid our efforts to evaluate the environmental behaviors of MPs.

A Novel Analytical Approach to Assessing Sorption of Trace Organic Compounds into Micro- and Nanoplastic Particles

Assessing the sorption of trace organic compounds (TOrCs) into micro- and nanoplastic particles has traditionally been performed using an aqueous phase analysis or solvent extractions from the particle. Using thermal extraction/desorption–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-Pyr-GC/MS) offers a possibility to analyze the TOrCs directly from the particle without a long sample preparation. In this study, a combination of two analytical methods is demonstrated. First, the aqueous phase is quantified for TOrC concentrations using Gerstel Twister® and TD-GC/MS. Subsequently, the TOrCs on the particles are analyzed. Different polymer types and sizes (polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), 48 µm; polyethylene (PE), 48 µm; polystyrene (PS), 41 µm; and PS, 78 nm) were analyzed for three selected TOrCs (phenanthrene, triclosan, and α-cypermethrin). The results revealed that, over a period of 48 h, the highest and fastest sorption occurred for PS 78 nm particles. This was confirmed with a theoretical calculation of the particle surface area. It was also shown for the first time that direct quantification of TOrCs from PS 78 nm nanoparticles is possible. Furthermore, in a mixed solute solution, the three selected TOrCs were sorbed onto the particles simultaneously.

Microplastic properties and their interaction with hydrophobic organic contaminants: a review

Microplastics (MPs) have been defined as particles of size < 5 mm and are characterized by hydrophobicity and large surface areas. MPs interact with co-occurring hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) via sorption-desorption processes in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Ingestion of MPs by living organisms may increase exposure to HOC levels. The key mechanisms for the sorption of HOCs onto MPs are hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic interaction, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and Van der Waals forces (vdW). Polymer type, UV-light-induced surface modifications, and the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups have a greater influence on electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. In contrast, the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups negatively influences hydrophobic interaction. MP characteristics such as crystallinity, weathering, and surface morphology affect sorption capacity. Matrix properties such as pH, ionic strength, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) also influence sorption capacity by exerting synergistic/antagonistic effects. We reviewed the mechanisms of HOC sorption onto MPs and the polymer and matrix properties that influence the HOC sorption. Knowledge gaps and future research directions are outlined.

Nanoplastics in Aquatic Environments: Impacts on Aquatic Species and Interactions with Environmental Factors and Pollutants

Plastic production began in the early 1900s and it has transformed our way of life. Despite the many advantages of plastics, a massive amount of plastic waste is generated each year, threatening the environment and human health. Because of their pervasiveness and potential for health consequences, small plastic residues produced by the breakdown of larger particles have recently received considerable attention. Plastic particles at the nanometer scale (nanoplastics) are more easily absorbed, ingested, or inhaled and translocated to other tissues and organs than larger particles. Nanoplastics can also be transferred through the food web and between generations, have an influence on cellular function and physiology, and increase infections and disease susceptibility. This review will focus on current research on the toxicity of nanoplastics to aquatic species, taking into account their interactive effects with complex environmental mixtures and multiple stressors. It intends to summarize the cellular and molecular effects of nanoplastics on aquatic species; discuss the carrier effect of nanoplastics in the presence of single or complex environmental pollutants, pathogens, and weathering/aging processes; and include environmental stressors, such as temperature, salinity, pH, organic matter, and food availability, as factors influencing nanoplastic toxicity. Microplastics studies were also included in the discussion when the data with NPs were limited. Finally, this review will address knowledge gaps and critical questions in plastics’ ecotoxicity to contribute to future research in the field.
