Abstract
Despite significant efforts by scientists in the development of advanced nanotechnology materials for smart diagnosis devices and drug delivery systems, the success of clinical trials remains largely elusive. In order to address this biomedical challenge, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained attention as a promising candidate due to their theranostic properties, which allow the simultaneous treatment and diagnosis of a disease. Moreover, MNPs have advantageous characteristics such as a larger surface area, high surface-to-volume ratio, enhanced mobility, mass transference and, more notably, easy manipulation under external magnetic fields. Besides, certain magnetic particle types based on the magnetite (Fe3O4) phase have already been FDA-approved, demonstrating biocompatible and low toxicity. Typically, surface modification and/or functional group conjugation are required to prevent oxidation and particle aggregation. A wide range of inorganic and organic molecules have been utilized to coat the surface of MNPs, including surfactants, antibodies, synthetic and natural polymers, silica, metals, and various other substances. Furthermore, various strategies have been developed for the synthesis and surface functionalization of MNPs to enhance their colloidal stability, biocompatibility, good response to an external magnetic field, etc. Both uncoated MNPs and those coated with inorganic and organic compounds exhibit versatility, making them suitable for a range of applications such as drug delivery systems (DDS), magnetic hyperthermia, fluorescent biological labels, biodetection and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Thus, this review provides an update of recently published MNPs works, providing a current discussion regarding their strategies of synthesis and surface modifications, biomedical applications, and perspectives.

Abstract
The development of facile and effective approaches to regulate the stability and reusability of metallic Co catalytic materials towards peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for remediating antibiotic pollutants remains challenging. In this study, we develop a one-step pyrolysis strategy to fabricate three-dimensional porous architecture assembled with N,S,O-codoped carbon nanotube-interwoven hierarchically porous carbon nanosheets encapsulated Co nanoparticles (Co@NSOC), which serve as chainmail catalysts for stable and reusable degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) through PMS activation. The optimal Co@NSOC-700-activated PMS system presents an excellent removal efficiency of 94.1 % for TCH within 10 min and a high cycling efficiency of 92.9 % after eight cycles. The encapsulated structure, abundant catalytic sites, superior hydrophilicity and strong magnetism contribute to the high performance. Further investigation demonstrates that both radical and nonradical pathways contribute to the TCH destruction, and 1O2 is verified as the dominant reactive substance. The possible degradation pathways and the toxicity of intermediates for TCH are evaluated. This work offers an innovative structure design and surface modulation strategy to fabricate robust catalysts towards environmental remediation.

Abstract
Catalysts play a pivotal role in advanced oxidation processes for the remediation of organic wastewater. In this study, a 3D carbon fiber@Fe3O4-CuO catalyst was fabricated, and its efficacy for persulfate activation to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was investigated at extremely low current density. The results of characterization revealed that the catalyst was uniformly distributed on the carbon fiber, and the loaded catalyst was Fe3O4-CuO nanoparticles with a diameter range of 20-50 nm. The SMX removal rate was significantly enhanced at extremely low current density by the metallic oxide catalyst loaded on carbon fiber. Approximately 90 % of SMX was degraded within 90 min when the electric current density was set at 0.1 mA cm-2. This modification process not only improved the persulfate activation efficiency but also enhanced the generation of hydrogen peroxide. Both radical and non-radical pathways were involved in the degradation of SMX. The degradation pathway mainly included hydroxylation, carboxylation, aniline cleavage, and desulfonation reactions. The quantitative structure-activity relationship model indicated that the potential risk of intermediate products to fish, daphnia, and green algae significantly decreased during the electrocatalytic oxidation process. This study provides a novel strategy for persulfate activation, which can significantly enhance the degradation efficiency, toxicity abatement, and energy usage effectiveness of electrocatalytic technology.

Abstract
Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were added into the aqueous phase to form nanofluid systems, in which ozone was used for the oxidation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in the solution. The nanomaterials were characterized using SEM, XRD, EDS, and FT-IR. The effects of nanoparticles size, addition ratio, and number of cycles on the process of ozone oxidation of TC were investigated. The results indicated that the addition ratio of nanoparticles have a certain impact on the performance of ozone oxidation. When the addition ratio increased from 0.02% to 0.4%, the removal rate of TC in the solution was improved significantly. Besides, the particle size of nanoparticles showed a greater impact on ozone oxidation. At the nanoscale, Fe3O4 nanoparticles exhibited significant strengthening properties, which is attributed to the construction of nanofluid systems. The removal rate of TC in solution decreased obviously with the increase of nanoparticles size. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles with particle size of 20 nm showed the most significant effect on TC degradation. The recycling experiment showed that magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles had stable regeneration performance. For three times of recycling treatment, with a Fe3O4 addition ratio of 0.4%, the removal rate of TC reached 98.7%, 97.21%, and 96%, respectively. Based on the characterization results, the strengthening mechanism was analyzed. The experimental results indicated that construction of nanofluids systems could improve the utilization rate of ozone, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were reusable and easily recyclable.

Abstract
Herein, Co3O4/TiO2-NRs electrodes with excellent photoresponse have been prepared via the plasma-assisted modification of Co3O4 on TiO2. With the combination of Co3O4 and TiO2, the composite electrode exhibited a red-shift phenomenon and the absorption of UV and visible light were enhanced to improve the light utilization efficiency. The Mott-Schottky diagram showed that a P-N heterojunction was successfully formed between Co3O4 and TiO2 on the electrode, which inhibited the recombination of electrons and holes, and had a high photocurrent density. In our photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) degradation experiments, the degradation rates of bisphenol A (BPA) by Co3O4/TiO2-NRs electrode in Na2SO4 and simulated seawater system reached 69.44 and 100%, respectively. The important role of ·O2-, ·OH, h+, and active chlorine (Cl·, HClO/ClO-, and Cl2) on the Co3O4/TiO2-NRs electrode during the degradation of BPA in simulated seawater was revealed. In addition, PEC combined with electrokinetic (EK) studies with the Co3O4/TiO2-NRs electrode were used for the degradation of BPA in muddy water, initially expanding the application scope of the PEC performance of the Co3O4/TiO2-NRs electrode for pollutants degradation, and had great potential for the subsequent treatment of muddy water pollutants.

Abstract
This study addresses the formidable persistence of tetracycline (TC) in the environment and its adverse impact on soil, water, and microbial ecosystems. To combat this issue, an innovative approach by varying polythiophene ((C4H4S)n; n = 3, 5, 7, 9) units and the subsequent interaction with Ti-doped graphene/boron nitride (Ti@GP_BN) nanocomposites was applied as catalysts for investigating the molecular structure, adsorption, excitation analysis, and photodegradation mechanism of tetracycline within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP-gd3bj/def2svp method. This study reveals a compelling correlation between the adsorption potential of the nanocomposites and their corresponding excitation behaviors, particularly notable in the fifth and seventh units of the polythiophene configuration. These units exhibit distinct excitation patterns, characterized by energy levels of 1.3406 and 924.81 nm wavelengths for the fifth unit and 1.3391 and 925.88 nm wavelengths for the seventh unit. Through exploring deeper, the examination of the exciton binding energy emerges as a pivotal factor, bolstering the outcomes derived from both UV-vis transition analysis and adsorption exploration. Notably, the calculated exciton binding energies of 0.120 and 0.103 eV for polythiophene units containing 5 and 7 segments, respectively, provide compelling confirmation of our findings. This convergence of data reinforces the integrity of our earlier analyses, enhancing our understanding of the intricate electronic and energetic interplay within these intricate systems. This study sheds light on the promising potential of the polythiophene/Ti-doped graphene/boron nitride nanocomposite as an efficient candidate for TC photodegradation, contributing to the advancement of sustainable environmental remediation strategies. This study was conducted theoretically; hence, experimental studies are needed to authenticate the use of the studied nanocomposites for degrading TC.

Abstract
A novel manganese-nitrogen co-doped biochar (MnN@BC) was synthesized and used as particle electrodes in three-dimensional (3D) electro-activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of refractory organic pollutants. All the spectroscopy (EDS, XRD, XPS, FTIR, and Raman) results indicated that Mn-N nanoclusters were successfully deposited and embedded in BC. The material appeared graphitized structure with more defects after Mn-N doping. MnN@BC in 3D electro-activation of PDS (E/MnN@BC/PDS) exhibited excellent performance in carbamazepine (CBZ) removal, with removal efficiency and degradation rates of 96.84% and 0.0582 min-1, respectively. Besides, MnN@BC was favorable for adsorption, electron transfer, and reactive oxidizing species (ROS) formation. MnN@BC had good recyclability in the E/MnN@BC/PDS system by the recycled experiments and characterization. Furthermore, quenching experiments, probe experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses suggested that •OH and 1O2 were the main ROS in the E/MnN@BC/PDS system, and the non-radical oxidation take a key part. In addition, this system achieved excellent CBZ degradation under wide pH range of 3-11, had good tolerance to natural organic matter and inorganic ions, and was efficient to various water matrices and other refractory organic pollutants. These findings provided new insights into particle electrode design and mechanisms enhancement in electro-activated PDS systems.

Ultrasound enhanced destruction of tetracycline hydrochloride with peroxydisulfate oxidation over FeS/NBC catalyst: Governing factors, strengthening mechanism and degradation pathway. CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 338:139418. [PMID: 37414292 DOI: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139418] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/24/2023] [Revised: 06/30/2023] [Accepted: 07/03/2023] [Indexed: 07/08/2023]
Abstract
In this study, FeS/N-doped biochar (NBC) derived from the co-pyrolysis of birch sawdust and Mohr's salt was applied to evaluate the efficiency of catalyzed peroxydisulfate (PDS) oxidation for tetracycline (TC) degradation. It is found that the combination of ultrasonic irradiation can distinctly enhance the removal of TC. This study investigated the effects of control factors such as PDS dose, solution pH, ultrasonic power, and frequency on TC degradation. Within the applied ultrasound intensity range, TC degradation increases with increasing frequency and power. However, excessive power can lead to a reduced efficiency. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the observed reaction kinetic constant of TC degradation increased from 0.0251 to 0.0474 min-1, with an increase of 89%. The removal ratio of TC also increased from ∼85% to ∼99% and the mineralization level from 45% to 64% within 90 min. Through the decomposition testing of PDS, reaction stoichiometric efficiency calculation, and electron paramagnetic resonance experiments, it is shown that the increase in TC degradation of the ultrasound-assisted FeS/NBC-PDS system was attributed to the increase in PDS decomposition and utilization, as well as the increase in SO4•- concentration. The radical quenching experiments showed that SO4•-, •OH, and O2•- radicals were the dominant active species in TC degradation. TC degradation pathways were speculated according to intermediates from HPLC-MS analysis. The test of simulated actual samples showed that dissolved organic matter, metal ions, and anions in waters can undercut the TC degradation in FeS/NBC-PDS system, but ultrasound can significantly reduce the negative impact of these factors.

Abstract
Tetracycline (TC) as a common antibiotic has adverse effects on human healthy and biological survival. In this study, a novel MXene/TiO2/Fe hybrid was designed and successfully synthesized by combination method of calcination and hydrothermal reduction. The photocatalysts were characterized by PXRD, SEM, TEM, VSM and XPS, etc. It was found that MXene/TiO2/Fe exhibited 2D multilayer structure like MXene. The in-situ synthesized TiO2 through calcinating MXene exhibited an octahedral biconical structure with exposed (001) and (101) facets. Surface heterojunction of (001) and (101) facets was formed within TiO2, which enhanced the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The residual MXene could play a role in co-catalyst to capture the photo-generated electrons from TiO2. Moreover, Fe nanoparticles not only optimize the band gap structure and increase the specific surface area, but also store the electrons as a good electrons acceptor, which further promote the separation of electrons and holes. The TC removal efficiency of optimal MXene/TiO2/Fe could reach 92% within 120 min. Moreover, the influence of external environment factors such as pH, catalyst dosages and common anions were investigated in detail. Mechanism analysis show that h+, •OH and •O2- are the main active substances. Finally, the degradation pathways were proposed according to LC-MS.

Abstract
The potential genotoxicity and non-biodegradability of antibiotics in the natural water bodies threaten the survival of various living things and cause serious environmental pollution and destruction. Three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical technology is considered a powerful means for antibiotic wastewater treatment as it can degrade non-biodegradable organic substances into non-toxic or harmless substances and even completely mineralize them under the action of electric current. Therefore, antibiotic wastewater treatment using 3D electrochemical technology has now become a hot research topic. Thus, in this review, a detailed and comprehensive investigation was conducted on the antibiotic wastewater treatment using 3D electrochemical technology, including the structure of the reactor, electrode materials, the influence of operating parameters, reaction mechanism, and combination with other technologies. Many studies have shown that the materials of electrode, especially particle electrode, have a great effect on the antibiotic wastewater treatment efficiency. The influence of operating parameters such as cell voltage, solution pH, and electrolyte concentration was very significant. Combination with other technologies such as membrane and biological technologies has effectively increased antibiotic removal and mineralization efficiency. In conclusion, the 3D electrochemical technology is considered as a promising technology for the antibiotic wastewater treatment. Finally, the possible research directions of the 3D electrochemical technology for antibiotic wastewater treatment were proposed.

Abstract
A new type of magnetic nanomaterial with Fe3O4 as the core and organic polymer as the shell was synthesized by seed emulsion polymerization. This material not only overcomes the problem of insufficient mechanical strength of the organic polymer, it also solves the problem that Fe3O4 is prone to oxidation and agglomeration. In order to make the particle size of Fe3O4 meet the requirement of the seed, the solvothermal method was used to prepare Fe3O4. The effects of the reaction time, amount of solvent, pH value, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) on the particle size of Fe3O4 were investigated. In addition, in order to accelerate the reaction rate, the feasibility of preparing Fe3O4 by microwave was studied. The results showed that under the optimum conditions, the particle size of Fe3O4 could reach 400 nm and had good magnetic properties. After three stages of oleic acid coating, seed emulsion polymerization, and C18 modification, the obtained C18-functionalized magnetic nanomaterials were used for the preparation of the chromatographic column. Under optimal conditions, stepwise elution significantly shortened the elution time of sulfamethyldiazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxypyridazine, and sulfamethoxazole while still achieving a baseline separation.

Abstract
Antibiotic mixtures in the environment result in the development of bacterial strains with resistance against multiple antibiotics. Oxidases are versatile that can bio-remove antibiotics. Various laccases (LACs), manganese peroxidases (MNPs), and versatile peroxidase (VP) were reconstructed in Pichia pastoris. For the single antibiotics, over 95.0% sulfamethoxazole within 48 h, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and norfloxacin within 96 h were bio-removed by recombinant VP with α-signal peptide, respectively. In a mixture of the four antibiotics, 80.2% tetracycline and 95.6% oxytetracycline were bio-removed by recombinant MNP2 with native signal peptide (NSP) within 8 h, whereas < 80.0% sulfamethoxazole was bio-removed within 72 h, indicating that signal peptides significantly impacted removal efficiencies of antibiotic mixtures. Regarding mediators for LACs, 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) resulted in better removal efficiencies of multi-antibiotic mixtures than 1-hydroxybenzotriazole or syringaldehyde. Furthermore, artificial microbial consortia (AMC) producing LAC2 and MNP2 with NSP significantly improved bio-removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (95.5%) in four-antibiotic mixtures within 48 h. Tetracycline and oxytetracycline were completely bio-removed by AMC within 48 and 72 h, respectively, indicating that AMC accelerated sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and oxytetracycline bio-removals. Additionally, transformation pathways of each antibiotic by recombinant oxidases were proposed. Taken together, this work provides a new strategy to simultaneously remove antibiotic mixtures by AMC.

Abstract
In electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs), the rate-limiting step is the mass transfer of pollutants to the electrodes due to the limited active surface areas. To this end, we established a three-dimensional (3D) EAOP system by coupling conventional graphite electrodes with dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The electrodes (particularly the anode) induced electric field spontaneously polarized CNTs into dispersed reactive particle electrodes (CNT-PEs) in the solution, which remarkably promoted electrochemical activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) to generate surface CNT-PDS* complexes and surface-bound radicals (SBRs). Based on the excited potential (ECNT-PEs) at different positions in the 3D electric field, CNT-PEs were activated into three states. (i) ECNT-PEs < Eorganic, CNT-PEs are chemically inert toward DCP oxidation; (ii) Eorganic < ECNT-PEs < Ewater, CNT-PEs will oxidize DCP via an electron-transfer process (ETP); (iii) ECNT-PEs > Ewater, both CNT-PDS* complexes and the anode will oxidize water to produce SBRs. Thus, DCP could be oxidized by CNT-PDS* complexes via ETP to form polychlorophenols on the CNT surface, causing rapid deactivation of the micro-electrodes. In contrast, SBRs attack DCP directly into chloride ions and hydroxylated products, maintaining the surface cleanliness and activity of CNT-PEs for long-term operations.

Abstract
Defect engineering is a promising method for improving the performance of MoS2 in various fields. In this study, sulfur-defect-enriched MoS2 (SD-MoS2) nanosheets were fabricated via a facile microwave-hydrothermal strategy in 10 min for tetracycline (TC) adsorption applications. The introduction of sulfur defects in MoS2 induced more exposed unsaturated sulfur atoms at the edge, enhancing the interaction between the adsorbent and antibiotic and improving the adsorption activity of the antibiotic. Density functional theory calculations further revealed that sulfur defects in MoS2 could alter the electronic structure and exhibited low TC adsorption energy of -2.09 eV. This work provides a new method for fabricating MoS2 nanosheets and other transition metal dichalcogenide-based adsorbents with enhanced antibiotic removal performance and a comprehensive understanding of antibiotic removal mechanisms in SD-MoS2.

Abstract
In the present study, we have successfully formulated a dual heterojunction of g-C3N4/BiOCl@MXene-Ti3C2 (GCBM) which was found to be highly active in the visible region. GCBM was found to be highly efficient for the degradation of an antibiotic, tetracycline (TC) as compared to the individual constituting units; g-C3N4 and BiOCl. Maximum of 97% TC degradation rate was obtained within 90 min of visible light irradiation for initial concentration of 10 mg/L of TC. Optical analysis exhibited that the synthesized heterojunction showed high absorption in the complete spectrum. The reactive species specified by the scavenger study showed the major involvement of •O2- and •OH radicals. The charge transfer mechanism showed that 2 schemes were majorly involvement in which Z-scheme was formed between g-C3N4 and BiOCl and Schottky junction was formed between g-C3N4 and Mxene-Ti3C2. The formation of Schottky junction helped in inhibiting the back transfer of photogenerated charges and thus, helped in reducing the recombination rate. The synthesized photocatalyst was found to be highly reusable and was studied for consecutive 5 cycles that generalized the high proficiency even after repetitive cycles.

Abstract
In the current study, a novel, green, low-cost, and sustainable path for the phyto-fabrication of Ag-Cu biochar nanocomposite (Ag-Cu/biochar) by Atriplex halimus biomass and aqueous extract is described. Surface plasmon resonance peaks were detected at 450 nm and 580 nm signifying the formation of both silver and copper nanoparticles, respectively on the biochar surface. XRD analysis confirmed the crystal structure of the phytosynthesized Ag-Cu/biochar whereas FT-IR, SEM, EDX, and XPS analyses confirmed the successful phytofabrication of the composite. Ag and Cu nanoparticles loaded on the biochar surface were almost spherically-shaped with a particle size ranging from 25 nm to 45 nm. Zeta potential of -25.5 mV showed the stability of Ag-Cu/biochar. The potential of this novel nanocomposite in the removal of doxycycline (DOX) was evident under different conditions as it reached nearly 100% under the optimum reaction conditions (DOX concentration; 50 ppm, pH; 9, a dose of Ag-Cu/biochar; 0.01 g, temperature; 25 °C, and H2O2 concentration; 100 mM). The promising regeneration of Ag-Cu/biochar was evident as the removal efficiency was 81% after 6 consecutive cycles. Ag-Cu/biochar was also shown an excellent antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacteria as well a promising antioxidant activity.

Study of Corrosion Mechanisms in Corrosive Media and Their Influence on the Absorption Capacity of Fe2O3/NdFeO3 Nanocomposites. NANOMATERIALS 2022; 12:nano12132302. Abstract
This paper presents the results of a study of the change in the stability of Fe2O3/NdFeO3 nanocomposites when exposed to aggressive media over a long period of time. The main purpose of these studies is to investigate the mechanisms of degradation and corrosion processes occurring in Fe2O3/NdFeO3 nanocomposites, as well as the influence of the phase composition on the properties and degradation resistance. According to the X-ray phase analysis, it was found that the variation of the initial components leads to the formation of mixed composition nanocomposites with different Fe2O3/NdFeO3 phase ratios. During corrosion tests, it was found that the dominance of the NdFeO3 phase in the composition of nanocomposites leads to a decrease in the degradation and amorphization rate of nanostructures by a factor of 1.5–2 compared to structures in which the Fe2O3 phase dominates. Such a difference in the degradation processes indicates the high stability of two-phase composites. Moreover, in the case of an aqueous medium, nanocomposites dominated by the NdFeO3 phase are practically not subjected to corrosion and deterioration of properties. The results obtained helped to determine the resistance of Fe2O3/NdFeO3 nanocomposites to degradation processes caused by exposure to aggressive media, as well as to determine the mechanisms of property changes in the process of degradation. The results of the study of the absorption capacity of Fe2O3/NdFeO3 nanocomposites in the case of the purification of aqueous media from manganese and arsenic showed that a change in the phase ratio in nanocomposites leads to an increase in the absorption efficiency of pollutants from aqueous media.

Abstract
In this work, a simple and green synthesis procedure for phytofabrication Zinc oxide-silver supported biochar nanocomposite (Ag/ZnO@BC) via Persicaria salicifolia biomass is investigated for the first time to uphold numerous green chemistry such as less hazardous chemical syntheses. XRD technique showed the crystal structure of the phytosynthesized Ag/ZnO@BC, whereas UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, TEM, and XPS analyses indicated the successful biosynthesis of the nanocomposite. Testing the photocatalytic potential of this novel nanocomposite in the removal of TC under different conditions unraveled its powerful photodegradation efficiency that reached 70.3% under the optimum reaction conditions: TC concentration; 50 ppm, pH; 6, a dose of Ag/ZnO@BC; 0.01 g, temperature; 25 °C, and H2O2 concentration; 100 mM. The reusability of Ag/ZnO@BC was evident as it reached 53% after six cycles of regeneration. Ag/ZnO@BC was also shown to be a potent antimicrobial agent against Klebsiella pneumonia as well as a promising antioxidant material. Therefore, the current work presented a novel nanocomposite that could be efficiently employed in various environmental and medical applications.

Abstract
An iron-copper graphite felt (Fe-Cu/HGF) electrode was successfully prepared by heat treatment and impregnation of graphite felt as the support followed by calcination, and an electro-activated peroxydisulfate (E-PDS) system with Fe-Cu/HGF as the cathode was constructed to degrade Diuron. This system synergistically activated PDS through electrochemical processes and transition metal catalysis. High-valence metal ions could be converted into low-valence metal ions by reduction at the cathode, and low-valence metal ions continuously activated PDS to generate more sulfate radicals (SO4-) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) to accelerate Diuron degradation. The Fe-Cu/HGF composite cathode exhibited a performance superior to graphite felt (RGF) obtained using pretreatment only, including increased hydrophilicity, significantly increased number of defect sites and larger electroactive surface area. Under optimized experimental degradation conditions, Diuron could be completely removed in 35 min, at which time copper ion leaching was not detected in the solution, while the total iron ion concentration was 0.27 mg L-1. Extending the reaction time to 6 h, the amount of total organic carbon was reduced to 32.2%. In addition, the free radicals that degraded Diuron were identified as mainly SO4- and OH with a slightly higher contribution of SO4-. The mechanism and pathways of Diuron degradation in the E-PDS system were determined. The E-PDS system was successfully applied to the degradation of other pollutants and the degradation of Diuron in different simulated water environments. In summary, the E-PDS system using Fe-Cu/HGF as the cathode is a promising treatment method for Diuron-containing wastewater.

Abstract
Tetracycline (TC) is a commonly used antibiotic that has gained wide spread notoriety owing to its high environmental risks. In this study, rich carbonyl-modified carbon-coated Fe0 was obtained by pyrolysis of MIL-100(Fe) in an Ar atmosphere, and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline in water. The roles of Fe0, carbon and surface carbonyl on PMS activation were investigated. Fe0 continuously activated PMS, acted as a sustained-release source of Fe2+, and could effectively activate PMS to produce SO4•-, O2•- and •OH. Carbon was found to do responsible for electron transportation during the activation of PMS and slow down the oxidation of Fe0. The carbonyl group on the carbon surface layer was the active site of 1O2, which explains the enhanced performance for TC degradation. When Ca = 0.1 g/L and C0 = 0.4 mM, TC degradation rate reached 96%, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of radicals (i.e., SO4•-, O2•-, •OH) and non-radical (i.e., 1O2). Finally, the degradation pathway was proposed by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), toxicities of the intermediate products were also evaluated. All results show that carbonyl-modified carbon-coated Fe0 possesses promising capacity for the removal of antibiotics from water.

Abstract
Heteroatoms doped carbon materials are widely used in the advanced oxidation process (AOPs) to remove organic pollutants in water due to the synergies effect between different heteroatoms. In this study, a novel kind of N, S co-doped magnetic mesoporous carbon nanosheets (Fe@NS-C) was prepared by simple one-step pyrolysis. Further, the influence of doping amount of S (L-methionine) and N (melamine) on catalytic activity was studied, the optimized sample Fe@NS-C-2-12/PMS showed a satisfying degradation ( 91.07%) for high concentrations of tetracycline (80 mg/L TC) in 10 min, which was attributed to the proper ratio of S content to N content (S(at.%)/ N(at.%)= 0.2097) in the sample could better play its synergistic effect by XPS analysis. The Fe@NS-C-2-12/ PMS system also exhibited satisfactory degradation effects in a wide pH range (3-10) and the existence of inorganic ions and humic acid. Then, the degradation mechanisms were mainly through the non-radical pathway (1O2 and electron transfer) and the major active sites were pyridinic N compared to thiophene S, CO, and Fe-Nx. This study could inspire the design of high-performance active and low-cost heteroatomic doping nano-magnetic catalysts for PMS-based waste treatment.

Abstract
The severe pollution caused by antibiotics has raised serious concerns in recent decades. In this study, graphene-like Enteromorpha biochar modified g-C3N4 (BC/CN) was synthesized and applied to degrade tetracycline by activating PMS under visible light, obtaining around 90% removal rate within 1 h. The Enteromorpha biochar can provide electron-withdrawing groups to adjust the electronic structure of g-C3N4, and induces more π-π interaction to decline the recombination of photocarriers. The environmental adaptability of the BC/CN/PMS/vis system was confirmed by the TC degradation in different initial pH, coexisting ions, and natural organic materials. In most cases, the system maintained over 78% degradation rate. The kinetics and mechanism of the system indicating that ∙O2-, 1O2 contributed more to the TC photocatalytic degradation than ∙OH, SO4∙-, and h+. During the process, TC underwent serials hydroxylation, demethylation, and ring-opening processes, and produced more than 40 intermediates in three pathways. Moreover, the BC/CN/PMS/vis system was proved to have at least a 50% degradation rate for more tetracyclines and quinolone antibiotics with the same condition.

Abstract
Herein, using Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) as a magnetic artificial peroxidase, an "on-off" ratiometric photoluminescence sensor with high-sensitivity and high-selectivity for coumarin was constructed based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between 7-hydroxycoumarin and rhodamine B (RB). The results showed that Fe3O4 NPs catalyzed H2O2 to generate nucleophilic group ·OH, which attacked the active site of coumarin and produced strong fluorescent 7-hydroxycoumarin molecules. Then, the fluorescence of RB was quenched with 7-hydroxycoumarin through the PET effect. The ratio signal generated in the above process was used for the quantitative detection of coumarin. Under optimized conditions, the linear range 0.5-25 mg/L was acquired for coumarin with the detection limit of 0.016 mg/L. This method had excellent selectivity and the recovery rate was 81.8%-106.8% with the relative standard deviation less than 5.6%, so it can be used for the quantitative analysis of coumarin in complex matrix samples.

Abstract
In this study, a AgCl/Bi24O31Cl10 composite heterostructure was constructed. Varying ratios of AgCl nanoparticles were immobilised onto the Bi24O31Cl10 rod-like structure. The physical and optical properties of the synthesised catalysts were characterised using a range of techniques. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was investigated by the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. The performance of the composite photocatalysts was 18 and 3.4 times better in 2-4,D and TC photodegradation when compared to Bi24O31Cl10 alone. The improved photocatalytic performance was due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects of the Ag nanoparticles deposited on the surface of the Xwt%AgCl/BOC thereby improving the separation of the electron–hole pair. The effects of the initial contaminant concentration, pH, photocatalyst loading were investigated. Trapping experiments were also carried out to deduce the reactive species responsible for the degradation process and a preliminary mechanism of degradation was proposed. Successful mineralisation of 2,4-D and TC at 65% and 63% efficiency was also measured after 24 h and the potential for reusability of the as-synthesised photocatalyst was established. This work reports a promising heterogeneous photocatalyst for the removal of pollutants such as TC and 2,4-D from wastewater.
