TiO2-based photocatalysts from type-II to S-scheme heterojunction and their applications

Photocatalysis is a promising sustainable technology to remove organic pollution and convert solar energy into chemical energy. Titanium dioxide has drawn extensive attention in this field owing to its high activity under UV light, good chemical stability, large availability, low price and low toxicity. However, the poor quantum efficiency derived from fast electron/hole recombination, the limited utilization of sunlight, and a weak reducing ability still hinder its practical application. Among the modification strategies of TiO2 to enhance its performance, the construction of heterojunctions with other semiconductors is a powerful and versatile way to maximise the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and steer their transport toward enhanced efficiency and selectivity. Here, the research progress and current status of TiO2 modification are reviewed, focusing on heterojunctions. A rapid evolution of the understanding of the different charge transfer mechanisms is witnessed from traditional type II to the recently conceptualised S-scheme. Particular attention is paid to different synthetic approaches and interface engineering methods designed to improve and control the interfacial charge transfer, and several cases of TiO2 heterostructures with metal oxides, metal sulfides and carbon nitride are discussed. The application hotspots of TiO2-based photocatalysts are summarized, including hydrogen generation by water splitting, solar fuel production by CO2 conversion, and the degradation of organic water pollutants. Hints about less studied and emerging processes are also provided. Finally, the main issues and challenges related to the sustainability and scalability of photocatalytic technologies in view of their commercialization are highlighted, outlining future directions of development.

Preparation and characterization of cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogels for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange

Biopolymer-based hydrogels have received great attention in wastewater treatment due to their excellent properties, e.g., high adsorption capacity, fast kinetics, reusability and ease of operation. In the present work, cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogels were prepared via co-dissolution and regeneration process as well as hydrothermal in situ synthesis of β-FeOOH. Effect of β-FeOOH loading on the properties of the composite hydrogels and the removal efficiency of methyl orange (MO) was investigated. Results showed that β-FeOOH was uniformly loaded onto the hydrogel framework, and the nanoporous structure of composite hydrogels could increase not only the effective contact area between β-FeOOH and the pollutants but also the active sites. Moreover, the increased β-FeOOH loading led to the enhanced MO removal rate under light conditions. When the loading time was extended from 6 h to 9 h, the MO removal rate increased by 21%, which can be mainly due to the photocatalytic degradation. In addition, MO removal rate reached 97.75% within 40 min under optimal conditions and attained 80.81% after five repetitions. The trapping experiment and EPR results indicated that the main active species were hydrogel radicals and holes. Consequently, this work provides an effective preparation approach for cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogel with high adsorption and photocatalytic degradation, which would hold great promise for wastewater treatment applications.

On the versatility of graphene-cellulose composites: An overview and bibliometric assessment

Practical benefits of graphene-cellulose composites (GCC) are categorical. Diverse salient features like thermal and electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and durability make GCC advantageous for widespread applications. Despite extensive studies the basic understanding of various fundamental aspects of this novel complex remains deficient. Based on this fact, a critical overview and bibliometric analysis involving the overall prospects of GCC was made wherein a total of 1245 research articles from the Scopus database published during the year 2002 to 2020 were used. For the bibliometric assessment, various criteria including the publication outputs, co-authorships, affiliated countries, and co-occurrences of the authors' keywords were explored. Environmental amiability, sustainability, economy, and energy efficiency of GCC were emphasized. In addition, the recent trends, upcoming challenges, and applied interests of GCC were highlighted. The findings revealed that the studies on GCC related to the energy storage, adsorption, sensing, and printing are ever-increasing, indicating the global research drifts on GCC. The bibliometric map analysis displayed that among the researchers from 61 countries/territories, China alone contributed about 50 % of the international publications. It is asserted that the current article may offer taxonomy to navigate into the field of GCC wherein stronger collaboration networks can be established worldwide through integrated research activities desirable for sustainable development.

Multifaceted Hydrogel Scaffolds: Bridging the Gap between Biomedical Needs and Environmental Sustainability

Hydrogels are dynamically evolving 3D networks composed of hydrophilic polymer scaffolds with significant applications in the healthcare and environmental sectors. Notably, protein-based hydrogels mimic the extracellular matrix, promoting cell adhesion. Further enhancing cell proliferation within these scaffolds are matrix-metalloproteinase-triggered amino acid motifs. Integration of cell-friendly modules like peptides and proteins expands hydrogel functionality. These exceptional properties position hydrogels for diverse applications, including biomedicine, biosensors, environmental remediation, and the food industry. Despite significant progress, there is ongoing research to optimize hydrogels for biomedical and environmental applications further. Engineering novel hydrogels with favorable characteristics is crucial for regulating tissue architecture and facilitating ecological remediation. This review explores the synthesis, physicochemical properties, and biological implications of various hydrogel types and their extensive applications in biomedicine and environmental sectors. It elaborates on their potential applications, bridging the gap between advancements in the healthcare sector and solutions for environmental issues.

Cellulose supported TiO2/Cu2O for highly asymmetric conjugate addition of α,β-unsaturated compounds in aqueous phase

A series of new kind green cellulose-supported bimetallic TiO2/Cu2O (Cell@TiO2/Cu2O) catalytic materials were obtained by in-situ reduction method employing cellulose as the carrier. The effects of metal percentage composition on the morphology and construction of the catalytic materials were systematically investigated. The Cell@TiO2/Cu2O were characterized by FT-IR, TG, XPS, SEM, TEM, EDS, and the element content was obtained by elemental analysis. Then, the achieved catalytic materials were applied to the chiral borylation reaction of α,β-unsaturated compounds, including nitrile compounds, esters, and α,β-unsaturated ketones. Remarkably, this approach provides an efficient strategy to gain an important class of chiral organic boron compounds with target chiral products in high yields as well as enantioselectivities. Besides, the Cell@TiO2/Cu2O could be easily recycled and effectively reused. This work constructed bimetallic TiO2/Cu2O on cellulose as a newly catalyst to obtain chiral boron compounds in aqueous phase.

Preparation of modified humic acid/TiO2/P(AA-co-AM) nanocomposite hydrogels with enhanced dye adsorption and photocatalysis

A novel composite hydrogel with exceptional adsorption and photocatalytic properties was synthesized using modified coal-based humic acid (HA-C), modified titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, acrylic acid (AA), and acrylamide (AM) as precursors. The modification of HA-C and TiO2 significantly enhances the structural support provided by the hydrogel for photocatalytic components. Moreover, we investigated the effects of monomer ratio, dye concentration, temperature, and pH on the material properties. Additionally, we tested the mechanical strength, swelling behavior, and reusability of the hydrogels. The composite hydrogel's adsorption performance and synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic performance were evaluated based on its removal rate for both absorbed and degraded methylene blue (MB). Remarkably, incorporating HA-C greatly improved the adsorption efficiency of the composite hydrogel for methylene blue to a maximum capacity of 1490 mg g-1. Furthermore, TiO2 nanoparticles in the structure promoted MB degradation with an efficiency exceeding 96.5%. The hydrogel exhibited excellent recoverability and reusability through nine cycles of adsorption/desorption as well as six cycles of degradation.

Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants Using a Polyvinylidene Fluoride/Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Cuprous Oxide Composite Membrane

Enhancing the efficiency of photocatalysts in the removal of organic pollutants is of vital importance in wastewater treatment. In this work, a set of composite membranes that can be used for efficient removal of the organic dyes, such as methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), and Congo red (CR), were prepared through coblending/electrospinning techniques using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the substrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the dispersing agent and wettability regulator, and cuprous oxide (Cu2O) as the photocatalyst. The results showed that Cu2O particles were well encapsulated in the electrospun PVDF/PVP fibers, and the composite membranes exhibited apparently enhanced hydrophilicity. Furthermore, compared with the pure Cu2O particles, the composite membranes not only showed a higher photocatalytic degradation ratio for MO (93.6%) but also showed a much higher degradation rate (62.4 mg/(mg·h)) in comparison with the other reported Cu2O-based composite photocatalytic materials in the literature. In addition, the membrane sample also had excellent recycling stability, and the retention rate of its removal ability maintained 92.1% after 5 times of recycling. Furthermore, the composite membranes also showed high removal ability toward MB and CR, with photocatalytic degradation ratios of 81.4 and 76.1%, respectively. This work indicates that the prepared PVDF/PVP-Cu2O composite membranes possess promising application prospects in wastewater treatment.

The prospect of CuxO-based catalysts in photocatalysis: From pollutant degradation, CO2 reduction, and H2 production to N2 fixation

The topic of photocatalysis and CuxO-based materials has been intertwined for quite a long time. Its relatively high abundance in the earth's crust makes it an important target for researchers around the globe. One of the properties exploited by researchers is its ability to exist in different oxidation states (Cu0, Cu+, Cu2+, and Cu3+) and its implications on photocatalytic efficiency improvement. Recently, they have been extensively used as photocatalytic materials for dye and pollutant degradation. However, it has almost reached saturation levels, therefore, currently, they are being mostly utilized for CO2 reduction and H2 evolution. Hence, this review will discuss the evolution (in application) of CuxO-based photocatalysts, relating to their past, present, and future. Moreover, photocatalytic efficiency improvement strategies such as doping, heterojunction formation, and carbonaceous construction with other materials will also be touched upon. Finally, the prospect of Cu2O-based photocatalysts will be discussed in the field of photocatalytic N2 fixation to ammonia. The significance of N2 chemisorption on photocatalysts to maximize ammonia production will also be given importance.

A review of carbon nanomaterials/bacterial cellulose composites for nanomedicine applications

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) mainly include fullerene, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, and their derivatives. As a new type of material in the field of nanomaterials, it has outstanding physical and chemical properties, such as minor size effects, substantial specific surface area, extremely high reaction activity, biocompatibility, and chemical stability, which have attracted widespread attention in the medical community in the past decade. However, the single use of carbon nanomaterials has problems such as self-aggregation and poor water solubility. Researchers have recently combined them with bacterial cellulose to form a new intelligent composite material to improve the defects of carbon nanomaterials. This composite material has been widely synthesized and used in targeted drug delivery, biosensors, antibacterial dressings, tissue engineering scaffolds, and other nanomedicine fields. This paper mainly reviews the research progress of carbon nanomaterials based on bacterial cellulose in nanomedicine. In addition, the potential cytotoxicity of these composite materials and their components in vitro and in vivo was discussed, as well as the challenges and gaps that need to be addressed in future clinical applications.

Cost-effective efficient materials for dye degradation using non-aqueous sol-gel route

In the present studies, the synthesis of pure ZnO nanoparticles and Mg and S-doped ZnO particles were carried out using a non-aqueous sol-gel method. The synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) are characterized using XRD, FESEM, EDX, FTIR, UV-Vis-DRS, XPS, PL, and BET surface area analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to examine the crystallization of ZnO, Mg-ZnO, and S-ZnO samples. The Mg-ZnO and S-ZnO samples exhibit significant c-axis compression and smaller crystallite sizes as compared to undoped ZnO. The optical band gap of Mg-ZnO and S-ZnO NPs were found to be 2.93 eV and 2.32 eV, respectively, which are lower than that of ZnO NPs (3.05 eV). The S-doped ZnO resulted in the homogenous distribution of sulfur ions in the ZnO lattice crystal. XPS analysis revealed that the doped S element was mostly S4+ and S6+. A systematic evaluation has been conducted to assess the influence of several operational parameters, including doped/undoped stoichiometry, solution pH, catalyst dosage, and radical trapping experiment, on the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine 6G (Rh 6G) dye. Furthermore, we investigated the photocatalytic degradation activity of ZnO, Mg-ZnO, and S-ZnO samples with aquoues solution of 5 ppm Rhodamine 6G (Rh 6G) at room temperature. Results indicated that pure ZnO nanoparticles have the highest photocatalytic degradation rate constant (0.00344 min-1), compared to the samples Mg-ZnO (0.00104 min-1) and S-ZnO (0.00108 min-1) with Rh 6G dye in presence of visible light emitting diode (Vis-LED) source at room temperature. The enhanced visible light photocatalytic activities of pure ZnO NPs were attributed to their superior surface properties (18.30 m2/g) and effective electron-hole separation.

Evaluation of chitosan-Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite for the enhancement of shelf life of chili and banana fruits

Post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables account for a large share of food waste in the world due to improper handling and packaging. By using the sol-gel method, Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite was prepared in this study from micro-sized commercial TiO2 powder and incorporated in a chitosan-cellulose matrix for the purpose of promising food packaging. The particle size and distribution of Ag nanoparticles (9.2437 nm size) confirmed their successful inclusion in the TiO2 surface. The morphology of the package assured the successful and uniform disbursement of Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite into the chitosan-cellulose matrix, which led to enhanced water resistance and photocatalytic activity. The developed package is proficient in hindering the growth of fecal coliform bacteria (Esche (Escherichia coli) by 9 mm in the agar plate. Moreover, the efficient application of chitosan-Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite in food coating and packaging was examined in extending shelf life, minimizing water loss, and preventing microbial infection during the storage of chili (up to 7 days at 37 °C) and banana, respectively. It can be concluded from the results that chitosan-Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite-based food coating and packaging have competent potential for enhancing the shelf life of moist foods.

Titanium doped cobalt ferrite fabricated graphene oxide nanocomposite for efficient photocatalytic and antibacterial activities

Dyes and microbes are the main sources of water pollution and their treatment with titanium doped cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CoTixFe2-xO4 NPs) is highly challenging due to the recombination ability of their electron-hole pairs which could be mitigated by making their composite with graphene oxide (GO). In the present study, titanium doped cobalt ferrite was fabricated on GO (CoTi0.2Fe1.8O4/GO NC) via the facile ultrasonication method and its confirmation was done by various analytical studies. Homogeneous dispersion of spherical CoTi0.2Fe1.8O4 NPs on the GO surface was realized by SEM analysis. Excellent crystallinity was corroborated by XRD while a Zeta Potential value -21.52 mV depicted exceptional stability. The photocatalytic power of CoTi0.2Fe1.8O/GO NC against Congo Red (CR) dye showed 91% degradation efficiency after 120 min visible light irradiation under optimum conditions of pH 9 and dye concentration 1 mg L-1 which was reasonably higher as compared to bare CoTi0.2Fe1.8O NPs (78% degradation efficiency). The improved photocatalytic performance is accredited to its narrow bandgap value (1.07 eV) and enhanced charge separation as indicated by the Tauc plot and Photoluminescence analysis, respectively. Additionally, CoTi0.2Fe1.8O/GO NC could be readily regenerated and reused five times with only ∼2% performance loss. Meanwhile, MICs of CoTi0.2Fe1.8O4/GO NC against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus were 0.046 and 0.093 mg mL-1 while MBCs were 0.093 and 0.187 mg mL-1, respectively. Thereby, optimized NC can open new avenues for the degradation of dyes from polluted water besides acting as a promising antimicrobial agent by rupturing the cell walls of pathogens.

Production of copper nanoparticle-immobilized chitin nanofibers and their role in plant disease control

Chitin is used in agriculture to improve crop production; however, its use is limited due to difficulties in its handling. A chitin nanofiber (CNF) overcomes this issue and, due to its elicitor activity, has great potential for crop protection. To expand CNF utilization, a copper nanoparticles-based antimicrobic CNF (CuNPs/CNF) was prepared using a chemical reduction method. The formation of CuNPs was confirmed via scanning electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the amount of CuNPs on the CNF was dose-dependent on the precursor salt, copper acetate. CuNPs endowed the CNF with strong antimicrobial activity against Alternaria brassicicola and Pectobacterium carotovorum. Moreover, the CuNPs/CNF reduced pathogen infection in cabbage. The antimicrobial activity and disease prevention of the CuNPs/CNF was increased compared to the corresponding CNF or commercial agrochemical Bordeaux treatment. These results indicate that CuNPs conferred antimicrobial activity on the CNF and increased the efficacy of plant disease protection.

Development of Blended Biopolymer-Based Photocatalytic Hydrogel Beads for Adsorption and Photodegradation of Dyes

Blended biopolymer-based photocatalytic hydrogel beads were synthesized by dissolving the biopolymers in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][Ac]), adding TiO2, and reconstituting the beads with ethanol. The incorporation of modifying biopolymer significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of the cellulose/TiO2 beads. Cellulose/carrageenan/TiO2 beads exhibited a 7.0-fold increase in adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB). In contrast, cellulose/chitosan/TiO2 beads showed a 4.8-fold increase in adsorption capacity for methyl orange (MO) compared with cellulose/TiO2 beads. In addition, cellulose/TiO2 microbeads were prepared through the sol-gel transition of the [Emim][Ac]-in-oil emulsion to enhance photodegradation activity. These microbeads displayed a 4.6-fold higher adsorption capacity and 2.8-fold higher photodegradation activity for MB than the millimeter-sized beads. Furthermore, they exhibited superior dye removal efficiencies for various dyes such as Congo red, MO, MB, crystal violet, and rhodamine B, surpassing the performance of larger beads. To expand the industrial applicability of the microbeads, biopolymer/TiO2 magnetic microbeads were developed by incorporating Fe2O3. These magnetic microbeads outperformed millimeter-sized beads regarding the efficiency and time required for MB removal from aqueous solutions. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties of magnetic microbeads can be easily controlled by adjusting the type of biopolymer modifier, the TiO2 and magnetic particle content, and the ratio of each component based on the target molecule. Therefore, biopolymer-based photocatalytic magnetic microbeads have great potential not only in environmental fields but also in biomedical fields.

Synergistically Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation by Coupling Slow-Photon Effect with Z-Scheme Charge Transfer in CdS QDs/IO-TiO2 Heterojunction

Lower light absorption and faster carrier recombination are significant challenges in photocatalysis. This study introduces a novel approach to address these challenges by anchoring cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) on inverse opal (IO)-TiO₂, which increases light absorption and promotes carriers' separation by coupling slow-photon effect with Z-scheme charge transfer. Specifically, the IO-TiO₂ was created by etching a polystyrene opal template, which resulted in a periodic structure that enhances light absorption by reflecting light in the stop band. The size of CdS quantum dots (QDs) was regulated to achieve appropriate alignment of energy bands between CdS QDs and IO-TiO₂, promoting carrier transfer through alterations in charge transfer modes and resulting in synergistic-amplified photocatalysis. Theoretical simulations and electrochemical investigations demonstrated the coexistence of slow-photon effects and Z-scheme transfer. The system's photodegradation performance was tested using rhodamine B as a model. This novel hierarchical structure of the Z-scheme heterojunction exhibits degradability 7.82 and 4.34 times greater than pristine CdS QDs and IO-TiO₂, respectively. This study serves as a source of inspiration for enhancing the photocatalytic capabilities of IO-TiO₂ and broadening its scope of potential applications.

Synergistic Promotion of Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange by Fluorine- and Silicon-Doped TiO2/AC Composite Material

The direct or indirect discharge of organic pollutants causes serious environmental problems and endangers human health. The high electron-hole recombination rate greatly limits the catalytic efficiency of traditional TiO2-based catalysts. Therefore, starting from low-cost activated carbon (AC), a photocatalyst (F-Si-TiO2/AC) comprising fluorine (F)- and silicon (Si)-doped TiO2 loaded on AC has been developed. F-Si-TiO2/AC has a porous structure. TiO2 nanoparticles were uniformly fixed on the surface or pores of AC, producing many catalytic sites. The band gap of F-Si-TiO2/AC is only 2.7 eV. In addition, F-Si-TiO2/AC exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity toward methyl orange (MO) (57%) in the dark after 60 min. Under the optimal preparation conditions, F-Si-TiO2/AC showed a significant photodegradation performance toward MO, reaching 97.7% after irradiation with visible light for 70 min. Even under the action of different anions and cations, its degradation efficiency is the lowest, at 64.0%, which has good prospects for practical application. At the same time, F-Si-TiO2/AC has long-term, stable, practical application potential and can be easily recovered from the solution. Therefore, this work provides new insights for the fabrication of low-cost, porous, activated, carbon-based photocatalysts, which can be used as high-performance photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Heterojunction material BiYO3/g-C3N4 modified with cellulose nanofibers for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with large specific surface area and superb adsorption capacity are excellent photocatalyst carriers. In this study, heterojunction powder material BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄ was successfully synthesized for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The photocatalytic material BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄/CNFs was obtained by loading BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄ on CNFs using electrostatic self-assembly method. BiYO₃/g-C₃N₄/CNFs exhibit a fluffy porous structure and large specific surface area, strong absorption in the visible light range, and the rapid transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Polymer-modified photocatalytic materials overcome the disadvantages of powder materials that are easy to reunite and difficult to recover. With synergistic effects of adsorption and photocatalysis, the catalyst demonstrated excellent TC removal efficiency, and the composite maintained nearly 90 % of its initial photocatalytic degradation activity after five cycles of use. The superior photocatalytic activity of the catalysts is also attributable to the formation of heterojunctions, and the heterojunction electron transfer pathway was confirmed by experimental studies and theoretical calculations. This work demonstrates that there is great research potential in using polymer modified photocatalysts to improve photocatalyst performance.

Insights into the Degradation Mechanisms of TCH by Magnetic Fe3S4/Cu2O Composite

Unique Fe₃S₄/Cu₂O composites were constructed with high Fenton-like photocatalytic activity through the impregnation coprecipitation method. The structure, morphology, optical, magnetic, and photocatalytic properties of the as-prepared composites were explored in detail. The findings suggest that small Cu₂O particles were grown on the surface of Fe₃S₄. The removal efficiency of TCH by Fe₃S₄/Cu₂O was 65.7, 4.75, and 3.67 times higher than that of pure Fe₃S₄, Cu₂O, and the Fe₃S₄ + Cu₂O mixture, respectively, when the mass ratio of Fe₃S₄ and Cu₂O was 1:1 at pH 7.2. The synergistic effect between Cu₂O and Fe₃S₄ was the main factor for TCH degradation. The Cu⁺ species from Cu₂O increased the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ cycle during the Fenton reaction. ^•O₂^- and h⁺ were the main active radicals; however, ^•OH and e^- played the second role in the photocatalytic degradation reaction. Moreover, the Fe₃S₄/Cu₂O composite retained good recyclability and versatility, and could be conveniently separated by a magnet.

Chitosan and cellulose-based composite hydrogels with embedded titanium dioxide nanoparticles as candidates for biomedical applications

Hydrogel based matrices and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) are well established materials in bone tissue engineering. Nevertheless, there is still a challenge to design appropriate composites with enhanced mechanical properties and improved cell growth. Progressing in this direction, we synthesized nanocomposite hydrogels by impregnating TiO₂ NPs in a chitosan and cellulose-based hydrogel matrix containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), to enhance the mechanical stability and swelling capacity. Although, TiO₂ has been incorporated into single and double component matrix systems, it has rarely been combined with a tri-component hydrogel matrix system. The doping of NPs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. Our results showed that incorporation of TiO₂ NPs improved the tensile properties of the hydrogels significantly. Furthermore, we performed biological evaluation of scaffolds, swelling degree, bioactivity assessment, and hemolytic tests to prove that all types of hydrogels were safe for use in the human body. The culturing of human osteoblast-like cells MG-63 on hydrogels showed better adhesion of cells in the presence of TiO₂ and showed increasing proliferation with increasing amount of TiO₂. Our results showed that the sample with the highest TiO₂ concentration, CS/MC/PVA/TiO₂ (1 %) had the best biological properties.

Latest avenues on titanium oxide-based nanomaterials to mitigate the pollutants and antibacterial: Recent insights, challenges, and future perspectives

Titanium oxide-based nanomaterials (TiOBNs) have been widely utilized as potential photocatalysts for various applications such as water remediation, oxidation, carbon dioxide reduction, antibacterial, food packing, etc. The benefits from TiOBNs for each application above have been determined as producing the quality of treated water, hydrogen gas as green energy, and valuable fuels. It also acts as potential material protecting foods (inactivation of bacteria and removal of ethylene) and increases shelf life for food storage. This review focuses on recent applications, challenges and future perspectives of TiOBNs to inhibit pollutants and bacteria. Firstly, the application of TiOBNs to treat emerging organic contaminants in wastewater was investigated. In particular, the photodegradation of antibiotics pollutants and ethylene using TiOBNs are described. Secondly, applying TiOBNs for antibacterial to reduce disease, disinfection, and food spoiling has been discussed. Thirdly, the photocatalytic mechanisms of TiOBNs to mitigate organic pollutants and antibacterial were determined. Finally, the challenges for different applications and future perspectives have been outlined.

Application of Unsupervised Learning for the Evaluation of Aerogels' Efficiency towards Dye Removal-A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) Approach

Water scarcity is a growing global issue, particularly in areas with limited freshwater sources, urging for sustainable water management practices to insure equitable access for all people. One way to address this problem is to implement advanced methods for treating existing contaminated water to offer more clean water. Adsorption through membranes technology is an important water treatment technique, and nanocellulose (NC)-, chitosan (CS)-, and graphene (G)- based aerogels are considered good adsorbents. To estimate the efficiency of dye removal for the mentioned aerogels, we intend to use an unsupervised machine learning approach known as "Principal Component Analysis". PCA showed that the chitosan-based ones have the lowest regeneration efficiencies, along with a moderate number of regenerations. NC2, NC9, and G5 are preferred where there is high adsorption energy to the membrane, and high porosities could be tolerated, but this allows lower removal efficiencies of dye contaminants. NC3, NC5, NC6, and NC11 have high removal efficiencies even with low porosities and surface area. In brief, PCA presents a powerful tool to unravel the efficiency of aerogels towards dye removal. Hence, several conditions need to be considered when employing or even manufacturing the investigated aerogels.

Cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles-based nano-biocomposite for abatement of water and wastewater pollutants

Nanostructured materials offer a significant role in wastewater treatment with diminished capital and operational expense, low dose, and pollutant selectivity. Specifically, the nanocomposites of cellulose with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have drawn a prodigious interest because of the extraordinary cellulose properties, high specific surface area, and pollutant selectivity of NPs. Integrating inorganic NPs with cellulose biopolymers for wastewater treatment is a promising advantage for inorganic NPs, such as colloidal stability, agglomeration prevention, and easy isolation of magnetic material after use. This article presents a comprehensive overview of water treatment approaches following wastewater remediation by green and environmentally friendly cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles-based bio-nanocomposites. The functionalization of cellulose, functionalization mechanism, and engineered hybrid materials were thoroughly discussed. Moreover, we also highlighted the purification of wastewater through the composites of cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles via adsorption, photocatalytic and antibacterial approach.

Investigation on the role of graphene-based composites for in photocatalytic degradation of phenol-based compounds in wastewater: a review

The ineptitude of conventional water management systems to eradicate noxious compounds leads to the development of advanced treatment systems. The disclosure of graphene-based photocatalytic degradation for the eradication of phenolic compounds has become the "apple of the eye" for many researchers. This review article describes the advanced research progress during the period of 2008-2021 in graphene-based nanocomposites and discusses their different synthesis methods. We will also talk about the applications of nanocomposite in water splitting, dye degradation, solar fuel generations, and organic transformations. Multicomponent heterojunction structure, co-catalyst cohering, and noble metal coupling have been inspected to enhance the photocatalytic performance of graphene-based composite by increasing charge separation and stability. The photocatalytic system's remarkable stability has been described in terms of facile recyclability. The adsorption ability of phenolic compounds has been addressed in the form of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm with various factors (pH, concentration, the intensity of light, the effect of catalyst, the effect of time, etc.). The purpose of this review is to survey mechanisms and processes that enlist graphene-based composite in terms of efficacy and dose of catalyst required to attain 99% degradation. Nanoparticles may cause toxicity and a pretext for their toxicity has been mentioned. Finally, it is anticipated that this article could allocate consequential knowledge to fabricating graphene-based composites that are in crucial demand of being discussed in future research.

Cellulose nanofibrils-graphene hybrids: recent advances in fabrication, properties, and applications

With the fast-developing social economy and the acceleration of industrialization, seeking effective renewable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly resources that show promising properties is an urgent task and a crucial means to achieve sustainable progress in the face of the growing depletion of non-renewable resources and the deterioration of environmental issues. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are natural polymeric nanomaterials with excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, good mechanical features, high strength, low density, high specific surface area, and tunable chemistry. Their combination with other nanomaterials, such as graphene derivatives (GNMs), has been demonstrated to be effective since they produce hybrids with outstanding physicochemical properties, tailorable functionality, and high performance. In this review, recent advances in the preparation, modification, and emerging application of CNFs/GNMs hybrids are described and discussed using the latest studies. First, the concise background of nanocellulose and graphene derivatives is provided, followed by the interfacial interactions between CNFs and GNMs. The different hybrids exhibit great promise in separation, adsorption, optics, flexible electronics, energy storage, thermal management, barrier and packaging, and electromagnetic shielding. The main challenges that inhibit the applicability of these hybrids are finally highlighted, and some perspectives for future research directions are provided.

Trilateral Multi-Functional Polyamide 12 Nanocomposites with Binary Inclusions for Medical Grade Material Extrusion 3D Printing: The Effect of Titanium Nitride in Mechanical Reinforcement and Copper/Cuprous Oxide as Antibacterial Agents

In this work, for the first time, polyamide 12 (PA12) nanocomposites with binary inclusions in material extrusion (MEX) 3D printing were developed. The aim was to achieve an enhanced mechanical response with the addition of titanium nitride (TiN) and antibacterial performance with the addition of copper (Cu) or cuprous oxide (Cu2O), towards the development of multi-functional nanocomposite materials, exploiting the 3D printing process benefits. The prepared nanocomposites were fully characterized for their mechanical properties. The thermal properties were also investigated. Morphological characterization was performed with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The antibacterial performance was investigated with an agar-well diffusion screening process. Overall, the introduction of these nanofillers induced antibacterial performance in the PA12 matrix materials, while at the same time, the mechanical performance was significantly increased. The results of the study show high potential for expanding the areas in which 3D printing can be used.

Smart Polycationic Hydrogel Dressing for Dynamic Wound Healing

It is challenging for traditional wound dressings to adapt to the complex and changeable environment, due to the lack of stable, efficient, and continuous bactericidal activity. They also cannot be satisfied in a multifunctional sensing platform to reconstruct skin sensory functions for human health monitoring. A multifunctional hydrogel dressing is developed here for the treatment of infected wounds and human health monitoring, which is based on alginate and polycation. The in situ polymerization and solvent displacement method are used to functionalize the hydrogel for the improvement of antifreezing, water retention, and environmental adaptability, as well as the adhesion and photothermal property. As a wound dressing, the as-prepared hydrogel exhibits an excellent antibacterial property against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In a rat model of full-thickness wound infection, it significantly accelerates the healing of infected wounds with a high healing rate of 96.49%. In the further multifunctional sensory tests, the hydrogel shows multiple response modes of strain, pressure and temperature, and sensing stability. An idea is provided here to develop a smart hydrogel dressing that can accelerate wound healing and achieve human health monitoring.

Recent Progress of Cellulose-Based Hydrogel Photocatalysts and Their Applications

With the development of science and technology, photocatalytic technology is of great interest. Nanosized photocatalysts are easy to agglomerate in an aqueous solution, which is unfavorable for recycling. Therefore, hydrogel-based photocatalytic composites were born. Compared with other photocatalytic carriers, hydrogels have a three-dimensional network structure, high water absorption, and a controllable shape. Meanwhile, the high permeability of these composites is an effective way to promote photocatalysis technology by inhibiting nanoparticle photo corrosion, while significantly ensuring the catalytic activity of the photocatalysts. With the growing energy crisis and limited reserves of traditional energy sources such as oil, the attention of researchers was drawn to natural polymers. Like almost all abundant natural polymer compounds in the world, cellulose has the advantages of non-toxicity, degradability, and biocompatibility. It is used as a class of reproducible crude material for the preparation of hydrogel photocatalytic composites. The network structure and high hydroxyl active sites of cellulose-based hydrogels improve the adsorption performance of catalysts and avoid nanoparticle collisions, indirectly enhancing their photocatalytic performance. In this paper, we sum up the current research progress of cellulose-based hydrogels. After briefly discussing the properties and preparation methods of cellulose and its descendant hydrogels, we explore the effects of hydrogels on photocatalytic properties. Next, the cellulose-based hydrogel photocatalytic composites are classified according to the type of catalyst, and the research progress in different fields is reviewed. Finally, the challenges they will face are summarized, and the development trends are prospected.

Solar-Light-Driven Ag9(SiO4)2NO3 for Efficient Photocatalytic Bactericidal Performance

Photocatalytic materials are being investigated as effective bactericides due to their superior ability to inactivate a broad range of dangerous microbes. In this study, the following two types of bacteria were employed for bactericidal purposes: Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The shape, crystal structure, element percentage, and optical properties of Ag9(SiO4)2NO3 were examined after it was successfully synthesized by a standard mixing and grinding processing route. Bactericidal efficiency was recorded at 100% by the following two types of light sources: solar and simulated light, with initial photocatalyst concentration of 2 µg/mL, and 97% and 95% of bactericidal activity in ultra-low photocatalyst concentration of 0.2 µg/mL by solar and simulated light, respectively, after 10 min. The survival rate was studied for 6 min, resulting in 99.8% inhibition at the photocatalyst dose of 2 µg/mL. The mechanism of bactericidal efficiency was found to be that the photocatalyst has high oxidation potential in the valence band. Consequently, holes play a significant part in bactericidal efficiency.

Recent advances in the hybridization of cellulose and carbon nanomaterials: Interactions, structural design, functional tailoring, and applications

Due to the good biocompatibility and flexibility of cellulose and the excellent optical, electronic, as well as mechanical properties of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), cellulose/CNM hybrid materials have been widely synthesized and used in energy storage, sensors, adsorption, biomedicine, and many other fields. In this review, we present recent advances (2016-current) in the design, structural design, functional tailoring and various applications of cellulose/CNM hybrid materials. For this aim, first the interactions between cellulose and CNMs for promoting the formation of cellulose/CNM materials are analyzed, and then the hybridization between cellulose with various CNMs for tailoring the structures and functions of hybrid materials is introduced. Further, abundant applications of cellulose/CNM hybrid materials in various fields are presented and discussed. This comprehensive review will be helpful for readers to understand the functional design and facile synthesis of cellulose-based nanocomposites, and to promote the high-performance utilization and sustainability of biomass materials in the future.

Development and Optimization of Medical-Grade Multi-Functional Polyamide 12-Cuprous Oxide Nanocomposites with Superior Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties for Cost-Effective 3D Printing

In the current study, nanocomposites of medical-grade polyamide 12 (PA12) with incorporated copper (I) oxide (cuprous oxide-Cu2O) were prepared and fully characterized for their mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial properties. The investigation was performed on specimens manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF) and aimed to produce multi-purpose geometrically complex nanocomposite materials that could be employed in medical, food, and other sectors. Tensile, flexural, impact and Vickers microhardness measurements were conducted on the 3D-printed specimens. The fractographic inspection was conducted utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to determine the fracture mechanism and qualitatively evaluate the process. Moreover, the thermal properties were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (D/TGA). Finally, their antibacterial performance was assessed through a screening method of well agar diffusion. The results demonstrate that the overall optimum performance was achieved for the nanocomposites with 2.0 wt.% loading, while 0.5 wt.% to 4.0 wt.% loading was concluded to have discrete improvements of either the mechanical, the thermal, or the antibacterial performance.

Recent developments in hydrogels containing copper and palladium for the catalytic reduction/degradation of organic pollutants

The elimination of toxic and hazardous contaminants from different environmental media has become a global challenge, causing researchers to focus on the treatment of pollutants. Accordingly, the elimination of inorganic and organic pollutants using sustainable, effective, and low-cost heterogeneous catalysts is considered as one of the most essential routes for this aim. Thus, many efforts have been devoted to the synthesis of novel compounds and improving their catalytic performance. Recently, palladium- and copper-based hydrogels have been used as catalysts for reduction, degradation, and decomposition reactions because they have significant features such as high mechanical strength, thermal stability, and high surface area. Herein, we summarize the progress achieved in this field, including the various methods for the synthesis of copper- and palladium-based hydrogel catalysts and their applications for environmental remediation. Moreover, palladium- and copper-based hydrogel catalysts, which have certain advantages, including high catalytic ability, reusability, easy work-up, and simple synthesis, are proposed as a new group of effective catalysts.

Role of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch-Derived Cellulose in Improving the Sonocatalytic Activity of Silver-Doped Titanium Dioxide

In this study, a novel cellulose/Ag/TiO₂ nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The cellulose extracted from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) could address the disposal issue created by OPEFB biomass. Characterization studies such as FESEM, EDX, HRTEM, XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, PL, XPS, and surface analysis were conducted. It was observed that the incorporation of cellulose could hinder the agglomeration, reduce the band gap energy to 3 eV, increase the specific surface area to 150.22 m³/g, and lower the recombination rate of the generated electron-hole pairs compared to Ag/TiO₂ nanoparticles. The excellent properties enhance the sonocatalytic degradation efficiency of 10 mg/L Congo red (up to 81.3% after 10 min ultrasonic irradiation) in the presence of 0.5 g/L cellulose/Ag/TiO₂ at 24 kHz and 280 W. The improvement of catalytic activity was due to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag and numerous hydroxyl groups on cellulose that capture the holes, which delay the recombination rate of the charge carriers in TiO₂. This study demonstrated an alternative approach in the development of an efficient sonocatalyst for the sonocatalytic degradation of Congo red.
