Carbon-14 labeled transformation of atrazine in soils: Comparison of superabsorbent hydrogel coating and technical material

Atrazine exhibits adverse effects on diverse organisms in both terrestrial and aquatic environments, even though it effectively targets specific organisms. This study employed superabsorbent hydrogels to coat 14C-atrazine coupled with a four-compartment model to determine the fate of this herbicide in three oxic soils over a 100-day incubation period. Mineralization of atrazine was limited in all soils, with rates remaining below 3.5 %. The encapsulation treatment reduced mineralization of atrazine in soil A and soil B. Bound residues ranged from 26.1 to 43.6 % at 100 d. The encapsulation treatment enhanced the degradation of atrazine and reduced the content of deethylatrazine in soil A, but significantly increased the content of deisopropylatrazine in soil A and hydroxyatrazine in soil C. Using the obtained data, we also constructed a four-compartment model to clarify the relationships among the parent compound, degradation products, bound residues, and mineralization. This model accurately fits the fate of atrazine in the present work. Additionally, the correlation study suggested that both soil parameters and superabsorbent hydrogels played significant roles in influencing atrazine transformation. These findings serve as a reference for evaluating the environmental impact of superabsorbent hydrogels in atrazine pollution reduction and offer a foundational model approach for a comprehensive understanding of organic pollutants.

Unlocking the potential of soil microbial communities for bioremediation of emerging organic contaminants: omics-based approaches

The remediation of emerging contaminants presents a pressing environmental challenge, necessitating innovative approaches for effective mitigation. This review article delves into the untapped potential of soil microbial communities in the bioremediation of emerging contaminants. Bioremediation, while a promising method, often proves time-consuming and requires a deep comprehension of microbial intricacies for enhancement. Given the challenges presented by the inability to culture many of these microorganisms, conventional methods are inadequate for achieving this goal. While omics-based methods provide an innovative approach to understanding the fundamental aspects, processes, and connections among microorganisms that are essential for improving bioremediation strategies. By exploring the latest advancements in omics technologies, this review aims to shed light on how these approaches can unlock the hidden capabilities of soil microbial communities, paving the way for more efficient and sustainable remediation solutions.

Joint toxic mechanism of clothianidin and prochloraz in the earthworm (Eisenia fetida)

Pesticides are typically present as combinations within soil ecosystems and have detrimental effects on untamed surroundings. However, the collective impacts and fundamental mechanisms of pesticides on soil living beings are currently inadequately assessed. In our current work, we evaluated the interactive consequences of clothianidin (CLO) and prochloraz (PRO) on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) using several toxicological tests, such as acute adverse effects, biocatalytic activity, and alterations in transcriptional activity. The findings revealed that CLO (with a 14-day LC50 value of 6.08 mg kg-1) exhibited greater toxicity compared to PRO (with a 14-day LC50 value of 79.41 mg kg-1). Moreover, the combinations of CLO and PRO had synergistic acute effects on E. fetida. Additionally, the activities of POD, CAT, and GST were significantly varied in most instances of single and mixed treatments when compared to the control. Surprisingly, the transcriptional levels of four genes (gst, sod, crt, and ann), related to oxidative load, metabolic detoxification systems, endoplasmic reticulum, and oxytocin neuropeptide, respectively, were also altered in response to single and mixture exposures, as compared to the control. Alterations in enzyme activity and gene transcriptional level could serve as early indicators for detecting co-exposure to pesticides. The findings of this research offered valuable holistic understanding regarding the toxicity of pesticide combinations on earthworms. Further research should be conducted to investigate the persistent effects of pesticide mixtures on terrestrial invertebrates in order to draw definitive conclusions about the associated risks.

First Clarification of the Involvement of Glycosyltransferase MdUGT73CG22 in the Detoxification Metabolism of Nicosulfuron in Apple

Nicosulfuron, an acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor herbicide, is a broad-spectrum and highly effective post-emergence herbicide. Glycosyltransferases (GTs) are widely found in organisms and transfer sugar molecules from donors to acceptors to form glycosides or sugar esters, thereby altering the physicochemical properties of the acceptor molecule, such as participating in detoxification. In this study, nine glycosyltransferases in group D of the apple glycosyltransferase family I were predicted to possibly be involved in the detoxification metabolism of ALS-inhibiting herbicides based on gene chip data published online. In order to confirm this, we analysed whether the expression of the nine glycosyltransferase genes in group D was induced by the previously reported ALS-inhibiting herbicides by real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction). It was found that the ALS-inhibiting herbicide nicosulfuron significantly increased the expression of the MdUGT73CG22 gene in group D. Further investigation of the mechanism of action revealed that the apple glycosyltransferase MdUGT73CG22 glycosylated and modified nicosulfuron both in vivo and ex vivo to form nicosulfuron glycosides, which were involved in detoxification metabolism. In conclusion, a new glycosyltransferase, MdUGT73CG22, was identified for the first time in this study, which can glycosylate modifications of the ALS-inhibiting herbicide nicosulfuron and may be involved in the detoxification process in plants, which can help to further improve the knowledge of the non-targeted mechanism of herbicides.

Metagenomic analysis of soil microbial communities associated with Poa alpigena Lindm in Haixin Mountain, Qinghai Lake

To investigate the impact of Poa alpigena Lindm on rhizosphere and bulk soil microorganisms in Haixin Mountain, Qinghai Lake, this study employed metagenomics technology to analyze the microbial communities of the samples. Results showed that 65 phyla, 139 classes, 278 orders, 596 families, 2376 genera, and 5545 species of soil microorganisms were identified from rhizosphere and bulk soil samples. Additionally, a microbial gene library specific to Poa alpigena Lindm was established for Qinghai Lake. Through α-diversity analysis, the richness and diversity of bulk microorganisms both significantly had a higher value than that in rhizosphere soil. The indicator microorganisms of rhizosphere and bulk soil at class level were Actinobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria, respectively. KEGG pathway analysis indicated that Carotenoid biosynthesis, Starch and sucrose metabolism, Bacterial chemotaxis, MAPK signaling pathway, Terpenoid backbone biosynthesis, and vancomycin resistance were the key differential metabolic pathways of rhizosphere soil microorganisms; in contrast, in bulk soil, the key differential metabolic were Benzoate degradation, Glycolysis gluconeogenesis, Aminobenzoate degradation, ABC transporters, Glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, Degradation of aromatic compounds, Methane metabolism, Pyruvate metabolism and Microbial metabolism diverse environments. Our results indicated that Poa alpigena Lindm rhizosphere soil possessed selectivity for microorganisms in Qinghai Lake Haixin Mountain, and the rhizosphere soil also provided a suitable survival environment for microorganisms.

Performance evaluation of rhamnolipid biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its effect on marine oil-spill remediation

This study aimed to reveal that the effect of biosurfactant on the dispersion and degradation of crude oil. Whole genome analysis showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa GB-3 contained abundant genes involved in biosurfactant synthesis and metabolic processes and had the potential to degrade oil. The biosurfactant produced by strain GB-3 was screened by various methods. The results showed that the surface tension reduction activity was 28.6 mN·m-1 and emulsification stability was exhibited at different pH, salinity and temperature. The biosurfactant was identified as rhamnolipid by LC-MS and FTIR. The fermentation conditions of strain GB-3 were optimized by response surface methodology, finally the optimal system (carbon source: glucose, nitrogen source: ammonium sulfate, C/N ratio:16:1, pH: 7, temperature: 30-35 °C) was determined. Compared with the initial fermentation, the yield of biosurfactant increased by 4.4 times after optimization. In addition, rhamnolipid biosurfactant as a dispersant could make the dispersion of crude oil reach 38% within seven days, which enhanced the bioavailability of crude oil. As a biostimulant, it could also improve the activity of indigenous microorganism and increase the degradation rate of crude oil by 10-15%. This study suggested that rhamnolipid biosurfactant had application prospect in bioremediation of marine oil-spill.

Strategies for mitigation of pesticides from the environment through alternative approaches: A review of recent developments and future prospects

Chemical-based peticides are having negative impacts on both the healths of human beings and plants as well. The World Health Organisation (WHO), reported that each year, >25 million individuals in poor nations are having acute pesticide poisoning cases along with 20,000 fatal injuries at global level. Normally, only ∼0.1% of the pesticide reaches to the intended targets, and rest amount is expected to come into the food chain/environment for a longer period of time. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce the amounts of pesticides present in the soil. Physical or chemical treatments are either expensive or incapable to do so. Hence, pesticide detoxification can be achieved through bioremediation/biotechnologies, including nano-based methodologies, integrated approaches etc. These are relatively affordable, efficient and environmentally sound methods. Therefore, alternate strategies like as advanced biotechnological tools like as CRISPR Cas system, RNAi and genetic engineering for development of insects and pest resistant plants which are directly involved in the development of disease- and pest-resistant plants and indirectly reduce the use of pesticides. Omics tools and multi omics approaches like metagenomics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics for the efficient functional gene mining and their validation for bioremediation of pesticides also discussed from the literatures. Overall, the review focuses on the most recent advancements in bioremediation methods to lessen the effects of pesticides along with the role of microorganisms in pesticides elimination. Further, pesticide detection is also a big challenge which can be done by using HPLC, GC, SERS, and LSPR ELISA etc. which have also been described in this review.

Low-Cost Plant-Protection Unmanned Ground Vehicle System for Variable Weeding Using Machine Vision

This study presents a machine vision-based variable weeding system for plant- protection unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to address the issues of pesticide waste and environmental pollution that are readily caused by traditional spraying agricultural machinery. The system utilizes fuzzy rules to achieve adaptive modification of the Kp, Ki, and Kd adjustment parameters of the PID control algorithm and combines them with an interleaved period PWM controller to reduce the impact of nonlinear variations in water pressure on the performance of the system, and to improve the stability and control accuracy of the system. After testing various image threshold segmentation and image graying algorithms, the normalized super green algorithm (2G-R-B) and the fast iterative threshold segmentation method were adopted as the best combination. This combination effectively distinguished between the vegetation and the background, and thus improved the accuracy of the pixel extraction algorithm for vegetation distribution. The results of orthogonal testing by selected four representative spraying duty cycles-25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%-showed that the pressure variation was less than 0.05 MPa, the average spraying error was less than 2%, and the highest error was less than 5% throughout the test. Finally, the performance of the system was comprehensively evaluated through field trials. The evaluation showed that the system was able to adjust the corresponding spraying volume in real time according to the vegetation distribution under the decision-making based on machine vision algorithms, which proved the low cost and effectiveness of the designed variable weed control system.

Application of biochar on soil bioelectrochemical remediation: behind roles, progress, and potential

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) that combine electrochemistry with biological methods have gained attention in the remediation of polluted environments, including wastewater, sludge, sediments, and soils. The most attractive advantage of BESs is that the solid electrode is used as an inexhaustible electron acceptor or donor, and biocurrent directly converted from organics can afford the reaction energy of contaminant breakdown, crossing the internal energy barrier of endothermic degradation, which achieves a continuous biodegradation process without the simultaneous use of exogenetic chemicals and bioelectricity recovery. However, soil BESs are hindered by expensive electrode materials, difficult pollutant and electron transfer, low microbial competitive activity, and biocompatibility in contamination remediation. Fortunately, introducing biochar into soil BESs could reveal a high potential in addressing these BES inadequacies. The characteristics of biochar, e.g., conductivity, transferability, high specific surface area, high porosity, large functional groups, and biocompatibility, can improve the performance of soil BESs. In fact, biochar not only carries electrons but also transfers nutrients, pollutants, and even bacteria by facilitating transmission in the bioelectric field of BESs. Consequently, the abilities of biochar make for better functionality of BESs. This review collates information on the roles, application, and progress of biochar in soil BESs, and future prospects are given. It is beneficial for environmental researchers and engineers to extend BES application in environmental remediation and to assist the progress of carbon sequestration and emission reduction based on the inertia of biochar and the blocking of electron flow to form methane.

A critical review of sustainable pesticide remediation in contaminated sites: Research challenges and mechanistic insights

Incidental pesticide application on farmlands can result in contamination of off-target biota, soil, groundwater, and surrounding ecosystems. To manage these pesticide contaminations sustainably, it is important to utilize advanced approaches to pesticide decontamination. This review assesses various innovative strategies applied for remediating pesticide-contaminated sites, including physical, chemical, biological, and nanoremediation. Integrated remediation approaches appear to be more effective than singular technologies. Bioremediation and chemical remediation are considered suitable and sustainable strategies for decontaminating contaminated soils. Furthermore, this study highlights key mechanisms underlying advanced pesticide remediation that have not been systematically studied. The transformation of applied pesticides into metabolites through various biotic and chemical triggering factors is well documented. Ex-situ and in-situ technologies are the two main categories employed for pesticide remediation. However, when selecting a remediation technique, it is important to consider factors such as application sites, cost-effectiveness, and specific purpose. In this review, the sustainability of existing pesticide remediation strategies is thoroughly analyzed as a pioneering effort. Additionally, the study summarizes research uncertainties and technical challenges associated with different remediation approaches. Lastly, specific recommendations and policy advocacy are suggested to enhance contemporary remediation approaches for cleaning up pesticide-contaminated sites.

Phytochemicals, Probiotics, Recombinant Proteins: Enzymatic Remedies to Pesticide Poisonings in Bees

The ongoing global decline of bees threatens biodiversity and food safety as both wild plants and crops rely on bee pollination to produce viable progeny or high-quality products in high yields. Pesticide exposure is a major driving force for the decline, yet pesticide use remains unreconciled with bee conservation since studies demonstrate that bees continue to be heavily exposed to and threatened by pesticides in crops and natural habitats. Pharmaceutical methods, including the administration of phytochemicals, probiotics (beneficial bacteria), and recombinant proteins (enzymes) with detoxification functions, show promise as potential solutions to mitigate pesticide poisonings. We discuss how these new methods can be appropriately developed and applied in agriculture from bee biology and ecotoxicology perspectives. As countless phytochemicals, probiotics, and recombinant proteins exist, this Perspective will provide suggestive guidance to accelerate the development of new techniques by directing research and resources toward promising candidates. Furthermore, we discuss practical limitations of the new methods mentioned above in realistic field applications and propose recommendations to overcome these limitations. This Perspective builds a framework to allow researchers to use new detoxification techniques more efficiently in order to mitigate the harmful impacts of pesticides on bees.

Microbial degradation of plant toxins

Plants produce a variety of secondary metabolites in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Although they have many functions, a subclass of toxic secondary metabolites mainly serve plants as deterring agents against herbivores, insects, or pathogens. Microorganisms present in divergent ecological niches, such as soil, water, or insect and rumen gut systems have been found capable of detoxifying these metabolites. As a result of detoxification, microbes gain growth nutrients and benefit their herbivory host via detoxifying symbiosis. Here, we review current knowledge on microbial degradation of toxic alkaloids, glucosinolates, terpenes, and polyphenols with an emphasis on the genes and enzymes involved in breakdown pathways. We highlight that the insect-associated microbes might find application in biotechnology and become targets for an alternative microbial pest control strategy.

Efficacy of drip irrigation with thiamethoxam on control of Monolepta hieroglyphica, and uptake, translocation and dietary risk of thiamethoxam in maize

BACKGROUND

Monolepta hieroglyphica (Motschulsky) is an important agricultural pest that causes significant economic losses in terms of crop production. Conventional pesticide spraying treatments can result in pesticide drift, endanger nontarget organisms and cause pests to fly away, resulting in unsatisfactory prevention and control effects. To study the effect of thiamethoxam on the control of maize M. hieroglyphica, a field experiment was conducted to determine the optimal thiamethoxam application dose, its spatial and temporal distribution dynamics, and its dietary risk based on its control effect when applied by spray and drip irrigation.

RESULTS

The results of the field trials showed that compared with spray irrigation, drip irrigation resulted in greater control starting from Day 5. This result was a consequence of the hysteresis effect of thiamethoxam being first absorbed by the roots and then continuously transferred upward, where it accumulates. After 30 days of drip irrigation with 75 and 150 g a.i. ha-1 thiamethoxam, the control effect on M. hieroglyphica was 32.41-49.44% and 69.77-80.57%, respectively. The results of the dietary risk assessment showed that the risk of thiamethoxam ingestion through maize kernels was acceptable regarding its effect on human health.

CONCLUSIONS

Drip irrigation with thiamethoxam can improve the effective utilization rate of pesticides, achieve precise control of maize M. hieroglyphica, and provide a new method for sustainable agricultural production. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Biofilm formation in xenobiotic-degrading microorganisms

The increased presence of xenobiotics affects living organisms and the environment at large on a global scale. Microbial degradation is effective for the removal of xenobiotics from the ecosystem. In natural habitats, biofilms are formed by single or multiple populations attached to biotic/abiotic surfaces and interfaces. The attachment of microbial cells to these surfaces is possible via the matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). However, the molecular machinery underlying the development of biofilms differs depending on the microbial species. Biofilms act as biocatalysts and degrade xenobiotic compounds, thereby removing them from the environment. Quorum sensing (QS) helps with biofilm formation and is linked to the development of biofilms in natural contaminated sites. To date, scant information is available about the biofilm-mediated degradation of toxic chemicals from the environment. Therefore, we review novel insights into the impact of microbial biofilms in xenobiotic contamination remediation, the regulation of biofilms in contaminated sites, and the implications for large-scale xenobiotic compound treatment.

Co-exposure of dimethomorph and imidacloprid: effects on soil bacterial communities in vineyard soil

In Taiwan, the pesticides dimethomorph and imidacloprid are recommended for pest control in vineyards. Therefore, tank-mixing of these two pesticides is usually a routine practice before application. This study analyzed the influence of vineyard soil microbial flora under the recommended and high dosages (100 times the recommended dosage) of dimethomorph and imidacloprid. Individual and combined applications of pesticides were also tested through batches of soil incubation experiments. Four treatments-control (C), dimethomorph (DT), imidacloprid (IM), and mixed application of dimethomorph and imidacloprid (ID)-were used in the experimental design. From the soil metabolism, no significant reaction was observed after 2 months in the recommended dosage group, regardless of whether the pesticides were being applied individually or combined. For the high dosage, imidacloprid showed a higher effect than the co-exposure treatments, showing a possible prolonged effect after its repetitive application. From PCoA analysis, pesticide treatments altered the soil ecology after 2 months, and the effect of imidacloprid can be explicitly observed at high dosages. At the phylum level, Acidobacteria can indicate pesticide application around the recommended dosage. It was inhibited by ID on day 7 and was augmented by all pesticides on day 63. The effect of the recommended dosage of pesticide mixtures after 2 months of incubation was revealed in the minor families Gemmataceae and Pirellulaceae, while the high dosage treatments affected both the core and the minor families. Our findings verified the changes in the composition of microbial communities upon pesticide application, which would affect carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorous cycles, and contaminant removal ability within the vineyard.

Current-use pesticide exposure pathways in Czech adults and children from the CELSPAC-SPECIMEn cohort

INTRODUCTION

In this study, we aimed to characterise exposure to pyrethroids, organophosphates, and tebuconazole through multiple pathways in 110 parent-child pairs participating in the CELSPAC-SPECIMEn study.

METHODS

First, we estimated the daily intake (EDI) of pesticides based on measured urinary metabolites. Second, we compared EDI with estimated pesticide intake from food. We used multiple linear regression to identify the main predictors of urinary pesticide concentrations. We also assessed the relationship between urinary pesticide concentrations and organic and non-organic food consumption while controlling for a range of factors. Finally, we employed a model to estimate inhalation and dermal exposure due to spray drift and volatilization after assuming pesticide application in crop fields.

RESULTS

EDI was often higher in children in comparison to adults, especially in the winter season. A comparison of food intake estimates and EDI suggested diet as a critical pathway of tebuconazole exposure, less so in the case of organophosphates. Regression models showed that consumption per g of peaches/apricots was associated with an increase of 0.37% CI [0.23% to 0.51%] in urinary tebuconazole metabolite concentrations. Consumption of white bread was associated with an increase of 0.21% CI [0.08% to 0.35%], and consumption of organic strawberries was inversely associated (-61.52% CI [-79.34% to -28.32%]), with urinary pyrethroid metabolite concentrations. Inhalation and dermal exposure seemed to represent a relatively small contribution to pesticide exposure as compared to dietary intake.

CONCLUSION

In our study population, findings indicate diet plays a significant role in exposure to the analysed pesticides. We found an influence of potential exposure due to spray drift and volatilization among the subpopulation residing near presumably sprayed crop fields to be minimal in comparison. However, the lack of data indicating actual spraying occurred during the critical 24-hour period prior to urine sample collection could be a significant contributing factor.

Comparative Genomics of Pesticide-Degrading Enterococcus Symbionts of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Leads to the Identification of Two New Species and the Reappraisal of Insect-Associated Enterococcus Species

Enterococcus species have been described as core members of the microbial community of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and have been previously reported as insecticide degrading agents. This study aimed to investigate the molecular composition of these microbial symbionts of S. frugiperda to better understand their association with the host and their potential for insecticide metabolization. Through phenotypic assays and comparative genomic analyses of several pesticide-degrading Enterococcus isolated from the gut of S. frugiperda larvae, we identified two new species: Enterococcus entomosocium n. sp. and Enterococcus spodopteracolus n. sp. Their identities as new species were confirmed by whole genome alignment, utilizing cut-offs of 95-96% for the average nucleotide identity (ANI) and 70% for the digital DNA: DNA hybridization (dDDH) values. The systematic positioning of these new species within the genus Enterococcus was resolved using genome-based analysis, revealing Enterococcus casseliflavus as a sister group of E. entomosocium n. sp., and Enterococcus mundtii as a sister group of E. spodopteracolus n. sp. Comparative genomic analyses of several isolates of E. entomosocium n. sp. and E. spodopteracolus n. sp. provided a better assessment of the interactions established in the symbiotic association with S. frugiperda and led to the discovery of misidentified new species of Enterococcus associated with insects. Our analyses indicated that the potential of E. entomosocium n. sp. and E. spodopteracolus n. sp. to metabolize different pesticides arises from molecular mechanisms that result in rapid evolution of new phenotypes in response to environmental stressors, in this case, the pesticides their host insect is exposed to.

Exploring microbial diversity responses in agricultural fields: a comparative analysis under pesticide stress and non-stress conditions

Exposure to pesticides changes the microbial community structure in contaminated agricultural fields. To analyze the changes in the native microbial composition qRT-PCR, a metagenomic study was conducted. The qRT-PCR results exhibited that the uncontaminated soil has a higher copy number of 16S rDNA relative to the soil contaminated with pesticide. Metagenome analysis interprets that uncontaminated soil is enriched with proteobacteria in comparison with pesticide-contaminated soil. However, the presence of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroides was found to be dominant in the pesticide-spiked soil. Additionally, the presence of new phyla such as Chloroflexi, Planctomycetes, and Verrucomicrobia was noted in the pesticide-spiked soil, while Acidobacteria and Crenarchaeota were observed to be extinct. These findings highlight that exposure to pesticides on soil significantly impacts the biological composition of the soil. The abundance of microbial composition under pesticide stress could be of better use for the treatment of biodegradation and bioremediation of pesticides in contaminated environments.

Fipronil Degradation in Soil by Enterobacter chengduensis Strain G2.8: Metabolic Perspective

Fipronil is an insecticide widely used in the agricultural and veterinary sectors for its efficacy in pest control. The presence of fipronil in the environment is mainly due to agricultural and domestic practices and is frequently found in different types of environmental matrices in concentrations ranging from µg/L to mg/L and can be hazardous to non-target organisms due to its high toxicity. This study was carried out to obtain and characterize microorganisms from soil which are capable of biodegrading fipronil that could be of great biotechnological interest. For this purpose, bioprospecting was carried out using fipronil (0.6 g/L) as the main source of carbon and nitrogen for growth. Once obtained, the strain was identified by sequencing the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene and the capacity to degrade fipronil was monitored by GC-MS. Our study showed a presence in soil samples of the strain identified as Enterobacter chengduensis, which was able to metabolize fipronil and its metabolites during the mineralization process. Enterobacter chengduensis was able to biodegrade fipronil (96%) and its metabolites fipronil-sulfone (92%) and fipronil-sulfide (79%) in 14 days. Overall, the results of this study provided a bacterium with great potential that could contribute to the degradation of fipronil in the environment.

Coupling multifactor dominated the biochemical response and the alterations of intestinal microflora of earthworm Pheretima guillelmi due to typical herbicides

The excessive application of herbicides on farmlands can substantially reduce labor costs and increase crop yields, but can also have undesirable effects on terrestrial ecosystems. To evaluate the ecological toxicity of herbicides, metolachlor and fomesafen, two typical herbicides that are extensively used worldwide were chosen as target pollutants, and the endogeic earthworm Pheretima guillelmi, which is widely distributed in China, was selected as the test organism. A laboratory-scale microcosmic experiment was set, and energy resources, enzymes, and the composition and connections of intestinal microorganisms in earthworms were determined. Both herbicides depleted the energy resources of the earthworms, especially glycogen contents; increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes; and inhibited acetylcholinesterase. Moreover, the richness and diversity of the intestinal bacterial community of the earthworms were suppressed. Additionally, the bacterial composition at the genus level changed greatly and the connections between dominant bacteria increased dramatically. Most interactions among the bacterial genera belonging to the same and different phyla showed mutualism and competition, respectively. Importantly, metolachlor with higher toxicity had a transitory effect on these indicators in earthworms, whereas fomesafen, with lower toxicity but stronger bioaccumulation potential, exerted a sustaining impact on earthworms. Collectively, these results indicate that the toxic effects of herbicides on terrestrial organisms should be comprehensively considered in combination with biological toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and other factors.

Rhizospheric bacteria: the key to sustainable heavy metal detoxification strategies

The increasing rate of industrialization, anthropogenic, and geological activities have expedited the release of heavy metals (HMs) at higher concentration in environment. HM contamination resulting due to its persistent nature, injudicious use poses a potential threat by causing metal toxicities in humans and animals as well as severe damage to aquatic organisms. Bioremediation is an emerging and reliable solution for mitigation of these contaminants using rhizospheric microorganisms in an environmentally safe manner. The strategies are based on exploiting microbial metabolism and various approaches developed by plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) to minimize the toxicity concentration of HM at optimum levels for the environmental clean-up. Rhizospheric bacteria are employed for significant growth of plants in soil contaminated with HM. Exploitation of bacteria possessing plant-beneficial traits as well as metal detoxifying property is an economical and promising approach for bioremediation of HM. Microbial cells exhibit different mechanisms of HM resistance such as active transport, extra cellular barrier, extracellular and intracellular sequestration, and reduction of HM. Tolerance of HM in microorganisms may be chromosomal or plasmid originated. Proteins such as MerT and MerA of mer operon and czcCBA, ArsR, ArsA, ArsD, ArsB, and ArsC genes are responsible for metal detoxification in bacterial cell. This review gives insights about the potential of rhizospheric bacteria in HM removal from various polluted areas. In addition, it also gives deep insights about different mechanism of action expressed by microorganisms for HM detoxification. The dual-purpose use of biological agent as plant growth enhancement and remediation of HM contaminated site is the most significant future prospect of this article.

Nano-biochar: recent progress, challenges, and opportunities for sustainable environmental remediation

Biochar is a carbonaceous by-product of lignocellulosic biomass developed by various thermochemical processes. Biochar can be transformed into "nano-biochar" by size reduction to nano-meters level. Nano-biochar presents remarkable physico-chemical behavior in comparison to macro-biochar including; higher stability, unique nanostructure, higher catalytic ability, larger specific surface area, higher porosity, improved surface functionality, and surface active sites. Nano-biochar efficiently regulates the transport and absorption of vital micro-and macro-nutrients, in addition to toxic contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, antibiotics). However an extensive understanding of the recent nano-biochar studies is essential for large scale implementations, including development, physico-chemical properties and targeted use. Nano-biochar toxicity on different organisms and its in-direct effect on humans is an important issue of concern and needs to be extensively evaluated for large scale applications. This review provides a detailed insight on nanobiochar research for (1) development methodologies, (2) compositions and properties, (3) characterization methods, (4) potentiality as emerging sorbent, photocatalyst, enzyme carrier for environmental application, and (5) environmental concerns.

Pesticide pestilence: Global scenario and recent advances in detection and degradation methods

Increased anthropogenic activities are confronted as the main cause for rising environmental and health concerns globally, presenting an indisputable threat to both environment and human well-being. Modern-day industrialization has given rise to a cascade of concurrent environmental and health challenges. The global human population is growing at an alarming rate, posing tremendous pressure on future food security, and healthy and environmentally sustainable diets for all. To feed all, the global food production needs to increase by 50% by 2050, but this increase has to occur from the limited arable land, and under the present-day climate variabilities. Pesticides have become an integral component of contemporary agricultural system, safeguarding crops from pests and diseases and their use must be reduce to fulfill the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) agenda . However, their indiscriminate use, lengthy half-lives, and high persistence in soil and aquatic ecosystems have impacted global sustainability, overshot the planetary boundaries and damaged the pure sources of life with severe and negative impacts on environmental and human health. Here in this review, we have provided an overview of the background of pesticide use and pollution status and action strategies of top pesticide-using nations. Additionally, we have summarized biosensor-based methodologies for the rapid detection of pesticide residue. Finally, omics-based approaches and their role in pesticide mitigation and sustainable development have been discussed qualitatively. The main aim of this review is to provide the scientific facts for pesticide management and application and to provide a clean, green, and sustainable environment for future generations.

Effects of Thiamethoxam and Fenvalerate Residue Levels on Light-Stable Isotopes of Leafy Vegetables

Accurate identification of the rational and standardized use of pesticides is important for the sustainable development of agriculture while maintaining a high quality. The insecticides thiamethoxam and fenvalerate and the vegetables spinach, cabbage, and lettuce were used here as study objects. Descriptive analysis and primary reaction kinetic equations were used to analyze the changes in metabolic residues of the two insecticides after different numbers of application in three vegetables. The effects of pesticide residue levels on the δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, δ²H, and δ¹⁸O values of vegetables were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and correlation analysis. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was applied to build discrimination models of the vegetables with different pesticide residues based on stable isotopes. The results showed that the first degradation residues of thiamethoxam and fenvalerate in spinach, cabbage, and lettuce conformed to primary reaction kinetic equations, but the degradation half-lives were long, and accumulation occurred in the second application. The differences in the four stable isotope ratios in the control group of the three vegetables were statistically significant, and two-thirds of the stable isotope ratios in the three vegetables with different numbers of pesticide applications were significantly different. The δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values of spinach, the δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, and δ²H values of cabbage, and the δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, δ²H, and δ¹⁸O values of lettuce were significantly correlated with different residues of thiamethoxam and/or fenvalerate applications. The control groups of the three vegetables, spinach-thiamethoxam-first, spinach-thiamethoxam-second, cabbage-thiamethoxam-second, cabbage-fenvalerate-first, and lettuce-thiamethoxam-first, were fully identified by PLS-DA models, while the identification models of other vegetables containing pesticide residues still need to be further improved. The results provide technical support for identifying the rational use of pesticides in vegetables and provide a reference method for guaranteeing the authenticity of green and organic vegetables.

Nano-based smart formulations: A potential solution to the hazardous effects of pesticide on the environment

Inefficient usage, overdose, and post-application losses of conventional pesticides have resulted in severe ecological and environmental issues, such as pesticide resistance, environmental contamination, and soil degradation. Advances in nano-based smart formulations are promising novel methods to decrease the hazardous impacts of pesticide on the environment. In light of the lack of a systematic and critical summary of these aspects, this work has been structured to critically assess the roles and specific mechanisms of smart nanoformulations (NFs) in mitigating the adverse impacts of pesticide on the environment, along with an evaluation of their final environmental fate, safety, and application prospects. Our study provides a novel perspective for a better understanding of the potential functions of smart NFs in reducing environmental pollution. Additionally, this study offers meaningful information for the safe and effective use of these nanoproducts in field applications in the near future.

An Exploratory Study of the Metabolite Profiling from Pesticides Exposed Workers

Pesticides constitute a category of chemical products intended specifically for the control and mitigation of pests. With their constant increase in use, the risk to human health and the environment has increased proportionally due to occupational and environmental exposure to these compounds. The use of these chemicals is associated with several toxic effects related to acute and chronic toxicity, such as infertility, hormonal disorders and cancer. The present work aimed to study the metabolic profile of individuals occupationally exposed to pesticides, using a metabolomics tool to identify potential new biomarkers. Metabolomics analysis was carried out on plasma and urine samples from individuals exposed and non-exposed occupationally, using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS). Non-targeted metabolomics analysis, using principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) or partial least squares discriminant orthogonal analysis (OPLS-DA), demonstrated good separation of the samples and identified 21 discriminating metabolites in plasma and 17 in urine. The analysis of the ROC curve indicated the compounds with the greatest potential for biomarkers. Comprehensive analysis of the metabolic pathways influenced by exposure to pesticides revealed alterations, mainly in lipid and amino acid metabolism. This study indicates that the use of metabolomics provides important information about complex biological responses.

Deciphering the recent trends in pesticide bioremediation using genome editing and multi-omics approaches: a review

Pesticide pollution in recent times has emerged as a grave environmental problem contaminating both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems owing to their widespread use. Bioremediation using gene editing and system biology could be developed as an eco-friendly and proficient tool to remediate pesticide-contaminated sites due to its advantages and greater public acceptance over the physical and chemical methods. However, it is indispensable to understand the different aspects associated with microbial metabolism and their physiology for efficient pesticide remediation. Therefore, this review paper analyses the different gene editing tools and multi-omics methods in microbes to produce relevant evidence regarding genes, proteins and metabolites associated with pesticide remediation and the approaches to contend against pesticide-induced stress. We systematically discussed and analyzed the recent reports (2015-2022) on multi-omics methods for pesticide degradation to elucidate the mechanisms and the recent advances associated with the behaviour of microbes under diverse environmental conditions. This study envisages that CRISPR-Cas, ZFN and TALEN as gene editing tools utilizing Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli and Achromobacter sp. can be employed for remediation of chlorpyrifos, parathion-methyl, carbaryl, triphenyltin and triazophos by creating gRNA for expressing specific genes for the bioremediation. Similarly, systems biology accompanying multi-omics tactics revealed that microbial strains from Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas putida, Burkholderia cenocepacia, Rhodococcus sp. and Pencillium oxalicum are capable of degrading deltamethrin, p-nitrophenol, chlorimuron-ethyl and nicosulfuron. This review lends notable insights into the research gaps and provides potential solutions for pesticide remediation by using different microbe-assisted technologies. The inferences drawn from the current study will help researchers, ecologists, and decision-makers gain comprehensive knowledge of value and application of systems biology and gene editing in bioremediation assessments.

Biodegradation of Iprodione and Chlorpyrifos Using an Immobilized Bacterial Consortium in a Packed-Bed Bioreactor

This work provides the basis for implementing a continuous treatment system using a bacterial consortium for wastewater containing a pesticide mixture of iprodione (IPR) and chlorpyrifos (CHL). Two bacterial strains (Achromobacter spanius C1 and Pseudomonas rhodesiae C4) isolated from the biomixture of a biopurification system were able to efficiently remove pesticides IPR and CHL at different concentrations (10 to 100 mg L^-1) from the liquid medium as individual strains and free consortium. The half-life time (T_1/2) for IPR and CHL was determined for individual strains and a free bacterial consortium. However, when the free bacterial consortium was used, a lower T_1/2 was obtained, especially for CHL. Based on these results, an immobilized bacterial consortium was formulated with each bacterial strain encapsulated individually in alginate beads. Then, different inoculum concentrations (5, 10, and 15% w/v) of the immobilized consortium were evaluated in batch experiments for IPR and CHL removal. The inoculum concentration of 15% w/v demonstrated the highest pesticide removal. Using this inoculum concentration, the packed-bed bioreactor with an immobilized bacterial consortium was operated in continuous mode at different flow rates (30, 60, and 90 mL h^-1) at a pesticide concentration of 50 mg L^-1 each. The performance in the bioreactor demonstrated that it is possible to efficiently remove a pesticide mixture of IPR and CHL in a continuous system. The metabolites 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA) and 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) were produced, and a slight accumulation of TCP was observed. The bioreactor was influenced by TCP accumulation but was able to recover performance quickly. Finally, after 60 days of operation, the removal efficiency was 96% for IPR and 82% for CHL. The findings of this study demonstrate that it is possible to remove IPR and CHL from pesticide-containing wastewater in a continuous system.

Insights of microbial community evolution under benzisothiazolinone exposure in different soil environments

Benzisothiazolinones (1, 2-benzisothiazoline-3-one; BIT) is widely used to control bacterial and fungal diseases of various crops, and their residues in soil may play an important role in the interaction between soil microorganisms. We studied microbial remediation in five representative soils under different soil conditions (unsterilized, sterilized and flooded) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate the effect of microorganisms on the degradation of BIT residues in soils to minimize the potentially toxic effects of BIT. High-throughput sequencing data showed that the structure and abundance of bacterial communities in BIT soils changed greatly, which might affect their degradation pathways, while Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) results showed that there was no significant difference in the fungal community in different treatments of the five soils, but the degradation rate of BIT was more influenced by anaerobic microorganisms. Furthermore, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria were the predominant bacterial phyla, accounting for 93.74% of all OTUs, which played an important role in the degradation of BIT. Lysinibacillus had a high relative abundance (21.10%) under flooded treatment conditions in Jilin soil, and its bioremediation may be a reason for the rapid degradation of BIT in flooded treatment. Besides, only soil organic matter (SOM) and pH among the soil properties had significant effects on the microbial community. Based on the further analysis of bacterial phenotype, some microorganisms related to the biodegradation of BIT were found, mainly belonging to Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. This study provides a useful theoretical basis for the biodegradation of BIT using isolated microorganisms.

Microbial degradation and transformation of benzo[a]pyrene by using a white-rot fungus Pleurotus eryngii F032

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmentally recalcitrant contaminants formed from naturally or incomplete combustion of organic materials and some of them are difficult to degrade due to their hydrophobicity and persistency. Benzo [a]pyrene (BaP), is one of PAHs that having five fused benzene and reported as mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic compounds. Biodegradation is one of promising techniques due to its relatively low economic cost and microorganism is a natural capacity to consume hydrocarbons. In this investigation, Pleurotus eryngii F032 was grown in 20 mL of modified mineral salt broth (MSB) supplemented with BaP under static and agitated culture. Within 20 days, static culture removed 59% of BaP, whereas agitated culture removed the highest amount (73%). To expedite BaP elimination, the mechanism and behavior of BaP biosorption and biotransformation by Pleurotus eryngii F032 were additionally examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The optimal conditions for P. eryngii F032 to eliminate BaP were 25 °C, a C/N ratio of 8, pH 3 and 0.2% inoculum concentration. At an initial BaP content of 10 mg/L, more than 50% was effectively eliminated within 20 days under these conditions. Salinity, glucose, and rhamnolipids were the most important factors impacting BaP biodegradation. GC-MS found degradation products such as BaP-3,6-quinone, indicating plausible metabolic routes. Finally, it may be assumed that the primary mechanism by which white-rot fungi eliminate BaP is by the utilization of biotransformation enzymes such as laccase to mineralize the PAHs. Hence, Pleurotus eryngii F032 could be an ideal candidate to treat PAHs contaminated soils.

Microalgae-based removal of pollutants from wastewaters: Occurrence, toxicity and circular economy

The natural and anthropogenic sources of water bodies are contaminated with diverse categories of pollutants such as antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, organic compounds, and other industrial chemicals. Depending on the type and the origin of the pollutants, the degree of contamination can be categorized into lower to higher concentrations. Therefore, the removal of hazardous chemicals from the environment is an important aspect. The physical, chemical and biological approaches have been developed and implemented to treat wastewaters. The microbial and algal treatment methods have emerged as a growing field due to their eco-friendly and sustainable approach. Particularly, microalgae emerged as a potential organism for the treatment of contaminated water bodies. The microalgae of the genera Chlorella, Anabaena, Ankistrodesmus, Aphanizomenon, Arthrospira, Botryococcus, Chlamydomonas, Chlorogloeopsis, Dunaliella, Haematococcus, Isochrysis, Nannochloropsis, Porphyridium, Synechococcus, Scenedesmus, and Spirulina reported for the wastewater treatment and biomass production. Microalgae have the potential for adsorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation. The microalgal strains can mitigate the hazardous chemicals via their diverse cellular mechanisms. Applications of the microalgae strains were found to be effective for sustainable developments and circular economy due to the production of biomass with the utilization of pollutants.

Reciprocal interactions between anthropogenic stressors and insect microbiota

Insects play many important roles in nature due to their diversity, ecological role, and impact on agriculture or human health. They are directly influenced by environmental changes and in particular anthropic activities that constitute an important driver of change in the environmental characteristics. Insects face numerous anthropogenic stressors and have evolved various detoxication mechanisms to survive and/or resist to these compounds. Recent studies highligted the pressure exerted by xenobiotics on insect life-cycle and the important role of insect-associated bacterial microbiota in the insect responses to environmental changes. Stressor exposure can have various impacts on the composition and structure of insect microbiota that in turn may influence insect biology. Moreover, bacterial communities associated with insects can be directly or indirectly involved in detoxification processes with the selection of certain microorganisms capable of degrading xenobiotics. Further studies are needed to assess the role of insect-associated microbiota as key contributor to the xenobiotic metabolism and thus as a driver for insect adaptation to polluted habitats.

Indigenous bacterial consortium-mediated cypermethrin degradation in the presence of organic amendments and Zea mays plants

Cypermethrin is a toxic pyrethroid insecticide that is widely used in agricultural and household activities. One of the most serious issues is its persistence in the environment, because it is easily transported to the soil and aquatic ecosystem. The biodegradation of cypermethrin is emerging as an environmentally friendly method for large-scale treatment. This study examined the application of a novel binary bacterial combination-based (Bacillus thuringiensis strain SG4 and Bacillus sp. strain SG2) approach used for the enhanced degradation of cypermethrin from the environment. The bacterial strains degraded cypermethrin (80% and 85%) in the presence of external nitrogen sources (KNO₃ and NaNO₃). Furthermore, when immobilized in agar disc beads, the co-culture degraded cypermethrin (91.3%) with a half-life (t_1/2) of 4.3 days compared to 4.9 days using sodium alginate beads. Cereal straw, farmyard manure, press mud compost, fresh cow dung, and gypsum were used as organic amendments in the soil to stimulate cypermethrin degradation. Cereal straw promoted the fastest cypermethrin degradation among the different organic amendments tested, with a t_1/2 of 4.4 days. The impact of cypermethrin-degrading bacterial consortium on cypermethrin rhizoremediation was also investigated. Bacterial inoculums exhibited beneficial effects on plant biomass. Moreover, Zea mays and the bacterial partnership substantially enhanced cypermethrin degradation in soil. Six intermediate metabolites were detected during the degradation of cypermethrin, indicating that cypermethrin could be degraded first by the hydrolysis of its carboxyl ester bond, followed by the cleavage of the diaryl linkage and subsequent metabolism. Our findings highlight the promising potential and advantages of the bacterial consortium for the bioremediation of a cypermethrin-contaminated environment.

Mycodegradation of diazinon pesticide utilizing fungal strains isolated from polluted soil

The current study aimed to isolate biodegradable soil fungi capable of metabolizing diazinon. The collected soil samples were investigated for diazinon pollution to detect the pesticide level in the polluted soil samples. Food poisoning techniques were utilized to preliminary investigate the biodegradation efficiency of the isolated fungal strains to diazinon pesticide using solid and liquid medium and also to detect their tolerance to different concentrations. GC-MS analysis of control and treated flasks were achieved to determine the diazinon residues for confirmation of the biodegradation efficiency. The total diazinon residues in the collected soil samples was found to be 0.106 mg/kg. Out of thirteen fungal strains isolated form diazinon polluted soils, six strains were potentially active in diazinon biodegradation. Food poisoning technique showed that A. niger, B. antennata, F. graminearum, P. digitatum, R. stolonifer and T. viride strains recorded fungal growth diameters of 65.2 ± 0.18, 57.5 ± 0.41, 47.2 ± 0.36, 56.5 ± 0.27, 85.0 ± 0.01, 85.0 ± 0.06 mm respectively in the treated group which were non significantly different compared to that of control (P > 0.05), indicating the high efficiency of these strains in diazinon degradation compared to the other isolated strains. GC-MS analysis revealed that B. antennata was the most efficient strain in diazinon degradation recording 32.24 ± 0.15 ppm concentration after 10 days incubation. Linear regression analysis confirmed that B. antennata was the most effective biodegradable strain recording the highest diazinon dissipation (83.88%) with the lowest T_1/2 value of 5.96 days while T. viride, A. niger, R. stolonifer and F. graminearum exhibited a high biodegradable activities reducing diazinon to 80.26%, 78.22%, 77.36% and 75.43% respectively after 10 days incubation. In conclusion, these tolerant fungi could be considered as promising, eco-friendly and biodegradable fungi for the efficient and potential removal of hazardous diazinon from polluted soil.

Genome-wide identification of Oryza sativa: A new insight for advanced analysis of ABC transporter genes associated with the degradation of four pesticides

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter is a large genes superfamily. It involves transportation of diverse substrates (e.g., heavy metal, amino acids, pesticides, metabolites). The ABC transporters can be strongly induced by environmental stress and responsible for the phase III metabolic process of toxic compounds in plants. To investigate the potential molecular and biochemical function of ABC transporters in response to pesticides, we used bioinformatics and high-throughput sequencing to identify 107 loci from rice (Oryza sativa) exposed to different pesticides (ametryn, AME; bentazone, BNTZ; fomesafen, FSA; mesotrione, MTR) and annotated as ABC transporter genes. ABC transporter genes were categorized to eight subfamilies including ABCA-G and ABCI. ABCG subfamily was the largest group in rice genome followed by ABCC subfamily and ABCB subfamily. The distribution of each ABC transporter on twelve chromosomes was identified. The result showed that a large number of genes were scattered around chromosome. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were selected for cis-acting analysis under pesticide stress. Multiple cis-elements for biological functions such as hormone-sensitive elements and defense-related elements were found to involve the initiation and regulation of transcription. Comprehensive phylogenetic analysis and domain prediction of all ABC DEGs from rice and Arabidopsis were carried out. The docking analysis of ABC transporters and pesticides provided insights into the key amino acid residues involved in the binding of the pesticides. Consequently, the results provided applicable information and reference for a more functional analysis of ABC transporter genes on regulation of pesticide metabolism and transport in plants.

Cold-adapted strains as plant growth-promoting bacteria on soybean seeds and biocontrol agents against Macrophomina phaseolina

AIM

To characterise cold-adapted bacteria by testing their PGP features and antagonistic activity against Macrophomina phaseolina, both in vitro and coating soybean seeds (Glycine max (L.) Merr.).

METHODS AND RESULTS

Burkholderia gladioli MB39, Serratia proteamaculans 136 and Serratia proteamaculans 137 were evaluated. In vitro tests showed that S. proteamaculans 136 and 137 produce siderophore and indole-acetic acid (IAA), solubilise phosphate and fix nitrogen. Additionally, B. gladioli MB39 and S. proteamaculans 137 showed hydrolase activity and potent antifungal effects. The biocontrol efficacy over soybean seeds was evaluated using in vitro and green-house methods by immersing seeds into each bacterial suspension. As a result, S. proteamaculans 136 has improved the performance in all the seed-germination evaluated parameters. In addition, S. proteamaculans 137 and B. gladioli MB39 strongly inhibited M. phaseolina, reducing the infection index values to 10% and 0%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Serratia proteamaculans 136, 137 and Burkholderia gladioli MB39 showed plant growth promotion features and inhibition of Macrophomina phaseolina infection by producing different antifungal compounds.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

Our results reinforce the application of cold-adapted Serratia proteamaculans and Burkholderia gladioli bacterial strains as candidates for developing microbial formulation to promote plant growth and guarantee antifungal protection in soybean crops.

Tetracycline bioremediation using the novel Serratia marcescens strain WW1 isolated from a wastewater treatment plant

Tetracycline pollution is an emerging threat in aquatic and terrestrial environments because of its widespread applications in human disease, livestock, and aquaculture. Present study, investigated the tetracycline degrading novel Serratia marcescens strain WW1, which was isolated from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Toxicity analysis of tetracycline with strain WW1 indicates that its intermediate metabolites are not toxic for the indicator bacteria and algae. The degradation conditions for the tetracycline optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) were determined as: pH 6.0; temperature, 36 °C; tetracycline concentration, 20 mg L^-1; and inoculum size, 100 μL (OD∼0.5). The strain WW1 was able to utilize tetracycline during the growth phase, and it degraded 89.5% of the tetracycline within 48 h. The degradation kinetics suggested the strain perform significant tetracycline removal with half-life (t_1/2) 239.04 and 12.44 h in control and treatments. Tetracycline and its intermediates were analyzed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS). It was observed that strain WW1 could efficiently metabolize the tetracycline within 48 h of experiment. The ability of strain WW1 to degrade tetracycline justifies its use as an environmentally-useful bacterium. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that the degradation of antibiotics is possible using indigenous microbial strains.

Role of Insect Gut Microbiota in Pesticide Degradation: A Review

Insect pests cause significant agricultural and economic losses to crops worldwide due to their destructive activities. Pesticides are designed to be poisonous and are intentionally released into the environment to combat the menace caused by these noxious pests. To survive, these insects can resist toxic substances introduced by humans in the form of pesticides. According to recent findings, microbes that live in insect as symbionts have recently been found to protect their hosts against toxins. Symbioses that have been formed are between the pests and various microbes, a defensive mechanism against pathogens and pesticides. Insects' guts provide unique conditions for microbial colonization, and resident bacteria can deliver numerous benefits to their hosts. Insects vary significantly in their reliance on gut microbes for basic functions. Insect digestive tracts are very different in shape and chemical properties, which have a big impact on the structure and composition of the microbial community. Insect gut microbiota has been found to contribute to feeding, parasite and pathogen protection, immune response modulation, and pesticide breakdown. The current review will examine the roles of gut microbiota in pesticide detoxification and the mechanisms behind the development of resistance in insects to various pesticides. To better understand the detoxifying microbiota in agriculturally significant pest insects, we provided comprehensive information regarding the role of gut microbiota in the detoxification of pesticides.
