Evaluation of an in-injection port thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method for analysis of non-polar organic compounds in ambient aerosol samples

Identification of organic constituents on atmospheric particulate matter in the East Asian background air of free troposphere by GC×GC-TOFMS

The presence of organic compounds on the particulate matter (PM) or aerosols can arise from the condensation of gaseous organic compounds on the existing aerosols, or from organic precursors to form secondary organic aerosols (SOA) through photochemistry. The objective of this study is to characterize organic constituents on aerosols relevant to their emission sources and the key compounds revealing the evolution of aerosols with the use of a novel analytical technique. A time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) coupled with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) was developed using a flow type of modulator instead of a thermal type as a prelude to field applications without the need for cryogen. The methodology of GC×GC-TOFMS is discussed in this study in detail. Since the coarse PM (PM10-2.5) may exhibit with a relatively high OC content compared to PM2.5, the GC×GC results have been obtained by analyzing PM10 samples collected in parallel with OC/EC analysis of PM2.5 samples at the Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS, 23.47°N, 120.87°E, 2862 m ASL) as the high-mountain background site in East Asia. We found that the organic analytes were in a majority in the range of 12-30 carbon numbers falling in the category of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) with 43 compounds of alcohol, aldehyde, ketone, and ester varieties if excluding alkanes. Intriguingly, trace amounts of plasticizers and phosphorus flame retardants such as phthalates (PAEs) and triphenyl phosphate (TPP) were also found, likely originating from regions involved in open burning of household solid waste in Southeast Asia or e-waste recycling in southern China and along the long-range transport route. Compounds such as these are unique to the specific sources, demonstrating the wide spread of these hazardous compounds in the environment.

Unambiguous Analysis and Systematic Mapping of Oxygenated Aromatic Compounds in Atmospheric Aerosols Using Ultrahigh-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Compositional analysis of organic aerosols (OAs) at the molecular level has been a long-standing challenge in field and laboratory studies. In this work, we applied different extraction protocols to aerosol samples collected from the ambient atmosphere and biomass burning sources, followed by Orbitrap mass spectrometric analysis with a soft electrospray ionization source operating in both positive and negative ionization modes. To systematically map the distribution of mono- and dioxygenated aromatic compounds (referred to as aromatic CHO1 and CHO2 formulas) in OA, we developed a unique two-dimensional Kendrick mass defect (2D KMD) framework. Our analysis unveiled a total of (76, 64, 70) aromatic CHO1 formulas and (103, 110, 106) CHO2 formulas, corresponding to samples obtained from ambient air, rice straw burning, and sugarcane leaf burning, respectively. These results reveal a significant number of additional distinct formulas exclusively present in ambient samples, suggesting a significant chemical transformation of OAs in the atmosphere. The analytical approach can be further extended to incorporate multiple layers of 2D KMD, enabling systematic mapping of the unexplored chemical space for complex environmental samples.

Insight into personal exposure characteristics and health effects of PM2.5 and PM0.25-bound PAHs and their derivatives with different heating ways in the Fenwei Plain, China

Personal exposure (PE) to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives in particulate matter with two aerodynamic sizes of 2.5 and 0.25 μm (PM2.5 and PM0.25) from rural housewives was studied in the Fenwei Plain, China. A total of 15 households were divided into five different groups based on the type of solid fuel and heating device used, including biomass briquette-furnace (BBF), biomass-elevated Kang (BEK), outdoor lump coal-boiler (OLC), indoor briquette coal-stove (IBC), and electricity (ELE). The PE concentrations of the PAHs and biomarkers in urine collected from the participants were determined. The results showed that the PE concentrations of total quantified PAHs in the biomass group (i.e., BBF and BEK) were 2.2 and 2.0 times higher than those in the coal groups (i.e., OLC and IBC) in PM2.5 and PM0.25, respectively. The housewives who used biomass as fuel suffered from higher potential health impacts than the coal fuel users. The incremental lifetime cancer risk for the PAHs in PM2.5 in the BBF and BEK groups exceeded the international safety threshold. Furthermore, the PE concentrations of oxygenated PAH (o-PAHs) in PM2.5 and PM0.25 in the biomass groups and the nitrated PAHs (n-PAHs) in PM0.25 in the coal groups showed strong correlations with the biomarkers. The results of this study proved the associations between exposure to the different classes of PAHs and health hazards. The findings could also serve as a guideline in establishing efficient measures for using solid fuels for cooking and household warming in northern China.

Exposure and health risk assessment of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during winter at residential homes: A case study in four Chinese cities

Residential indoor PM2.5 were concurrently collected in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Xi'an during the winter and early spring seasons of 2016-2017, for updating the current knowledge of the spatial variation of indoor air pollution and the potential health risks in China. PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were characterized, and the associated inhalation cancer risks were assessed by a probabilistic approach. Higher levels of indoor PAHs were identified in Xi'an residences (averaged at 176.27 ng m-3) with those of other cities ranging from 3.07 to 15.85 ng m-3. Traffic-related fuel combustion was identified as a common contributor to indoor PAHs through outdoor infiltration for all investigated cities. Indoor PAHs profiles showed city-specific differences, while distinctions between profiles based on indoor activities or ambient air quality were limited. Similar with the total PAHs concentrations, the estimated toxic equivalencies (TEQ) with reference to benzo[a]pyrene in Xi'an residences (median at 18.05 ng m-3) were above the recommended value of 1 ng m-3 and were magnitudes higher than the other investigated cities with estimated median TEQ ranging from 0.27 to 1.55 ng m-3. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) due to PAHs inhalation exposure was identified with a descending order of adult (median at 8.42 × 10-8) > adolescent (2.77 × 10-8) > children (2.20 × 10-8) > senior (1.72 × 10-8) for different age groups. Considering the lifetime exposure-associated cancer risk (LCR), potential risks were identified for residents in Xi'an as an LCR level over 1 × 10-6 was identified for half of the adolescent group (median at 8.96 × 10-7), and exceedances were identified for about 90 % of the groups of adults (10th percentile at 8.29 × 10-7) and seniors (10th percentile at 1.02 × 10-6). The associated LCR estimated for other cities were relatively insignificant.

Characterization and Risk Assessment of PM2.5-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and their Derivatives Emitted from a Typical Pesticide Factory in China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives have received extensive attention due to their negative effects on the environment and on human health. However, few studies have performed comprehensive assessments of PAHs emitted from pesticide factories. This study assessed the concentration, composition, and health risk of 52 PM_2.5-bound PAHs during the daytime and nighttime in the vicinity of a typical pesticide factory. The total concentration of 52 PAHs (Σ52PAHs) ranged from 53.04 to 663.55 ng/m³. No significant differences were observed between daytime and nighttime PAH concentrations. The average concentrations of twenty-two parent PAHs, seven alkylated PAHs, ten oxygenated PAHs, and twelve nitrated PAHs were 112.55 ± 89.69, 18.05 ± 13.76, 66.13 ± 54.79, and 3.90 ± 2.24 ng/m³, respectively. A higher proportion of high-molecular-weight (4-5 rings) PAHs than low-molecular-weight (2-3 rings) PAHs was observed. This was likely due to the high-temperature combustion of fuels. Analysis of diagnostic ratios indicated that the PAHs were likely derived from coal combustion and mixed sources. The total carcinogenic equivalent toxicity ranged from 15.93 to 181.27 ng/m³. The incremental lifetime cancer risk from inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact with the PAHs was 2.33 × 10^-3 for men and 2.53 × 10^-3 for women, and the loss of life expectancy due to the PAHs was 11,915 min (about 0.023 year) for men and 12,952 min (about 0.025 year) for women. These results suggest that long-term exposure to PM_2.5 emissions from a pesticide factory has significant adverse effects on health. The study results support implementing the characterization of PAH emissions from pesticide factories and provides a scientific basis for optimizing the living environment around pesticide factories.

Characterizing atmospheric biological aerosols at a suburban site in Guangzhou, southern China by airborne microbes, proteins and saccharides

Bioaerosols in ambient environment can be evaluated using various techniques. However, the results of bioaerosols obtained using different methods are rarely compared. The relationships between different bioaerosol indicators and their behaviors under the influence of environment factors are seldom investigated. Here we used airborne microbial numbers, proteins and saccharides concentrations as the indicators to characterize bioaerosols in two seasons with different source contribution, air pollution situation and meteorological conditions. The observation was conducted at a suburban site in Guangzhou, southern China, during the winter and spring periods of 2021. Airborne microbes were observed with an average of (1.82 ± 1.33) × 10⁶ cells/m³, converted to the mass concentration level of 0.42 ± 0.30 μg/m³, comparable but lower than that of proteins (0.81 ± 0.48 μg/m³). Both of them were much higher than the average concentration of saccharides (19.93 ± 11.53 ng/m³). During the winter period, significant and good correlations were observed between the three components. In spring, a biological outbreak was observed in late March with a strong elevation of airborne microbes followed by elevations of proteins and saccharides. The retardation of proteins and saccharides could be the result of the enhanced release from microorganisms under the influence of atmospheric oxidation processes. Saccharides in PM_2.5 were studied to reveal the contribution of specific sources of bioaerosols (e.g. fungi, pollen, plants and soil). Our results show that primary emissions and secondary processes should play their roles in the variations of these biological components. By comparing the results of the three methods, this study provides an insight into the applicability and variability of bioaerosols characterization in the ambient environment with respect to various influences of sources, atmospheric processes and environmental conditions.

Health risk assessment of inorganic and organic constituents of the coarse and fine PM in an industrialized region of Brazil

A health risk assessment of inorganic and organic species associated with coarse and fine particulate matter (PM) was conducted in Southeastern Brazil. TSP, PM₁₀, and PM_2.5 samples were collected, and their elemental (metals/metalloids) and organic (PAHs) composition were determined by EDXRF and GC-MS. The health risks were determined through hazard quotient (HQ) and cancer risk (CR). It was found that different elements and routes of exposure lead to different health risks, even for the PM concentration in compliance with air quality standards. The major routes of exposure for adults were inhalation and dermal contact whereas for children were ingestion and dermal contact. High non-cancer risks (HQ) caused by Cl and Fe exposure were associated with coarser fractions, PM₁₀ and TSP, respectively, whereas high HQ for Se, Sb, and V exposure were associated with PM_2.5. HQ values for children were near twice that for adults, and CR values were 65 % to 130 % higher for children than for adults. CR posed by PAHs was negligible. The results highlighted that the HQ might be over- or underestimated depending on the form in which the element Cl is determined (elemental or ion), reinforcing the need for an embracing chemical characterization of the PM. High HQ values were found related to the exposure to some elements present in the TSP, showing that this PM fraction should not be neglected.

Evidence of non-tailpipe emission contributions to PM2.5 and PM10 near southern California highways

Particulate Matter (PM) concentrations near highways are influenced by vehicle tailpipe and non-tailpipe emissions, other emission sources, and urban background aerosols. This study collected PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ filter samples near two southern California highways (I-5 and I-710) over two weeks in winter 2020. Samples were analyzed for chemical source markers. Mean PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ concentrations were approximately 10-15 and 30 μg/m³, respectively. Organic matter, mineral dust, and elemental carbon (EC) were the most abundant PM components. EC and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at I-710 were 19-26% and 47% higher than those at the I-5 sites, respectively, likely due to a larger proportion of diesel vehicles. High correlations were found for elements with common sources, such as markers for brake wear (e.g., Fe, Ba, Cu, and Zr) and road dust (e.g., Al, Si, Ca, and Mn). Based on rubber abundances, the contributions of tire tread particles to PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ mass were approximately 8.0% at I-5 and 5.5% at I-710. Two different tire brands showed significantly different Si, Zn, carbon, and natural rubber abundances.

Occurrence and Risk Assessment of Personal PM2.5-Bound Phthalates Exposure for Adults in Hong Kong

We performed personal PM_2.5 monitoring involving 56 adult residents in Hong Kong. Additionally, paired personal and residential indoor fine particle (PM_2.5) samples were collected from 26 homes and from 3 fixed monitoring locations (i.e., outdoor samples). Six PM_2.5-bound phthalate esters (PAEs)-including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP)-were measured using a thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometer method. Average ∑₆PAEs (i.e., summation of six PAE congeners) concentrations in personal PM_2.5 exposure (699.4 ng/m³) were comparable with those in residential indoors (646.9 ng/m³), and both were slightly lower than the outdoor levels. DEHP was the most abundant PAE congener (80.3%-85.0%) and found at the highest levels in different exposure categories, followed by BBP, DnBP, and DnOP. Strong correlations were observed between DEHP with DnBP (r_s: 0.81-0.90; p < 0.01), BBP (r_s: 0.81-0.90; p < 0.01), and DnOP (r_s: 0.87-0.93; p < 0.01) in each exposure category. However, no apparent intercorrelations were shown for PAE congeners. Higher indoor concentrations and a stronger correlation between DMP and DEP were found compared with outdoor concentrations. Principal component analysis affirmed heterogeneous distribution and notable variations in PAE sources across different exposure categories. The average daily intakes of ∑₆PAEs and DEHP via inhalation were 0.14-0.17 and 0.12-0.16 μg/kg-day for adults in Hong Kong. A time-weighted model was used to estimate PAE exposures incorporating residential indoor and outdoor exposure and time activities. The inhalation cancer risks attributable to measured and estimated personal exposure to DEHP exceeded the U.S. EPA's benchmark (1 × 10^-6). The results provide critical information for mitigation strategies, suggesting that PAEs from both ambient and indoor sources should be considered when exploring the inhalation health risks of PAEs exposure.

Plastic Burning Impacts on Atmospheric Fine Particulate Matter at Urban and Rural Sites in the USA and Bangladesh

To better understand the impact of plastic burning on atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), we evaluated two methods for the quantification of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene (TPB), a molecular tracer of plastic burning. Compared to traditional solvent-extraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) techniques, thermal-desorption (TD) GCMS provided higher throughput, lower limits of detection, more precise spike recoveries, a wider linear quantification range, and reduced solvent use. This method enabled quantification of TPB in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) samples collected at rural and urban sites in the USA and Bangladesh. These analyses demonstrated a measurable impact of plastic burning at 5 of the 6 study locations, with the largest absolute and relative TPB concentrations occurring in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where plastic burning is expected to be a significant source of PM_2.5. Background-level contributions of plastic burning in the USA were estimated to be 0.004-0.03 μg m^-3 of PM_2.5 mass. Across the four sites in the USA, the lower estimate of plastic burning contributions to PM_2.5 ranged 0.04-0.8%, while the median estimate ranged 0.3-3% (save for Atlanta, Georgia, in the wintertime at 2-7%). The results demonstrate a consistent presence of plastic burning emissions in ambient PM_2.5 across urban and rural sites in the USA, with a relatively small impact in comparison to other anthropogenic combustion sources in most cases. Much higher TPB concentrations were observed in Dhaka, with estimated plastic burning impacts on PM_2.5 ranging from a lower estimate of 0.3-1.8 μg m^-3 (0.6-2% of PM_2.5) and the median estimate ranging 2-35 μg m^-3 (5-15% of PM_2.5). The methodological advances and new measurements presented herein help to assess the air quality impacts of burning plastic more broadly.

Chemical characterization of PM2.5 in heavy polluted industrial zones in the Guanzhong Plain, northwest China: Determination of fingerprint source profiles

Industrial emission has been proved to be an important source of atmospheric PM_2.5, which causes serious air pollution and health impacts. The air quality of the industrial zones, which are the intermediate stationary areas between the direct emissions and diffusion to the atmosphere, is always overlooked. In this study, the PM_2.5 filter samples were collected in the six representative types of industrial zones in four cities of the Guanzhong Plain in 2020. The chemical characteristics of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) in the zones were investigated. The mass concentrations of 13 elements and 39 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM_2.5 were quantified. Cement and concrete (CC) and brick production (BP) exhibited a similar chemical composition profile characterized by high proportions of calcium (Ca), aluminum (Al), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF), 1-nitronaphthalene (1N-NAP), and 3-nitrofluoranthene (3N-FLA). Glassware and ceramics (GC) showed a distinguishable profile with a relatively low ratio of copper/cadmium (Cu/Cd) and lead (Pb)/Cd. The profile for metal forging (MF) was abundant in vanadium (V), Pb, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (IcdP) and also recognized by particular diagnostic ratios of nitrated-PAHs (n-PAHs). The highest proportions of several metals such as chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), Cd, and fluoranthene (FLA) were found in the thermoelectric industry (TI) due to a large amount of coal consumption in the manufacture processing. Chemical production (CP) was the only industrial type using natural gas as the main fuel in this study, which shows the distinguishing feature of relatively high proportions of low molecular weight parent-PAHs (p-PAHs) and 2-ring oxygenated-PAHs (o-PAHs). This study not only attains the detailed chemical fingerprints, but also the potential tracers and ratios, which are of great significance for refining source apportionment and relieving PM_2.5 pollution contributed by the industrial sources.

Field measurements of PM2.5 emissions from typical solid fuel combustion in rural households in Fenhe Basin, China

Solid fuel is the most widely used energy source for cooking and heating in the rural households in developing countries. In this study, emissions from 13 fuel-stove combinations were studied in two typical rural villages in the Fenhe Basin, Shanxi Province, China. This study gathered data on the emission characteristics of particles with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 μm (PM_2.5), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and 21 parent and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pPAHs and oPAHs, respectively); the mechanism of gas formation was also determined. The PM_2.5 EFs of biomass burning ranged from 4.11 ± 2.12 to 138 ± 47.2 g/kg, which was higher than that of coal combustion (1.57 ± 0.89 to 4.11 ± 0.63 g/kg). Notably, the average PM_2.5 EFs of biomass burning in a traditional stove and elevated kang were 50.9 ± 13.8 and 23.0 ± 3.99 g/kg, respectively, suggesting that the elevated kang had superior emission mitigation. Wood pellet burning in a biomass furnace yielded lower PM_2.5 EFs than firewood burning in the biomass furnace, which demonstrated wood pellet combustion's superior emission reduction effect. The relative contribution of OC4 to OC subfractions may be useable as tools for identifying the sources of coal and biomass burning. Regarding PAHs, biomass with abundant lignin pyrolysis produced numerous hydroxyl radicals that were conducive to the release of greater proportions of oPAHs. By contrast, pPAHs had greater relative contributions in coal combustion. Regarding gaseous pollutants, its formation mechanism varied with combustion phase. Emission differences between the two phases were mainly determined by the relative contributions of volatile C/N and char. Clarifying the pollutant formation mechanism can better guide the implementation of emission control from household solid fuel combustion.

Characteristics and health risks of parent, alkylated, and oxygenated PAHs and their contributions to reactive oxygen species from PM2.5 vehicular emissions in the longest tunnel in downtown Xi'an, China

A vehicular emission study was conducted in the longest inner-city tunnel in Xi'an, northwestern China in four time periods (I: 07:30-10:30, II: 11:00-14:00, III: 16:30-19:30, and IV: 20:00-23:00 LST). A sum of 40 PAHs, including parent (p-PAHs), alkylated (a-PAHs), and oxygenated (o-PAHs) in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) were quantified. The relationships between the PAHs and the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were also studied. The average total quantified PAHs concentration was 236.3 ± 48.3 ng m^-3. The p-PAHs were found to be the most dominated group, accounting for an average of 88.1% of the total quantified PAHs, followed by a-PAHs (6.1%) and o-PAHs (5.8%). On the base of the number of aromatic rings, the groups of ≤5 rings (92.5 ± 1.2%) had higher fractions than the high ones (≥6 rings, 7.5 ± 1.2%) for pPAHs. Diurnal variations of PAHs subgroups exhibited the highest levels in Period III, consistent with the largest traffic counts in evening rush hours. However, less reduction of few PAHs in the night period demonstrates that the emissions of compressed natural gas (CNG) and methanol-fueled vehicles cannot be ignored while their contribution increased. High ROS activity levels were observed in the traffic-dominated samples, implying the potential oxidative damages to humans. Additionally, diurnal variation of the ROS activity was consistent with the total quantified PAHs and toxic equivalency of benzo[a]pyrene. Good correlations (R > 0.6, p < 0.05) were seen between individual groups of PAHs (especially for 3-5 rings p-PAHs, 4 rings a-PAHs, and 2-3 rings o-PAHs) and ROS activity, supporting that the vehicular emitted PAHs possibly initiate oxidative stress. The multiple linear regression analysis further illustrated that chrysene contributed the highest (25.0%) to ROS activity. In addition to highlighting the potential hazards to the PAHs from the vehicular emission, their roles to mitigate the health effects by formations of ROS were firstly reported in northwestern China.

Apportionment of Vehicle Fleet Emissions by Linear Regression, Positive Matrix Factorization, and Emission Modeling

Real-world emission factors for different vehicle types and their contributions to roadside air pollution are needed for air-quality management. Tunnel measurements have been used to estimate emission factors for several vehicle types using linear regression or receptor-based source apportionment. However, the accuracy and uncertainties of these methods have not been sufficiently discussed. This study applies four methods to derive emission factors for different vehicle types from tunnel measurements in Hong Kong, China: (1) simple linear regressions (SLR); (2) multiple linear regressions (MLR); (3) positive matrix factorization (PMF); and (4) EMission FACtors for Hong Kong (EMFAC-HK). Separable vehicle types include those fueled by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline, and diesel. PMF was the most useful, as it simultaneously seeks source profiles and source contributions. Diesel-, gasoline-, and LPG-fueled vehicle emissions accounted for 52%, 10%, and 5% of PM2.5 mass, respectively, while ammonium sulfate (~20%), ammonium nitrate (6%), and road dust (7%) were also large contributors. MLR exhibited the highest relative uncertainties, typically over twice those determined by SLR. EMFAC-HK has the lowest relative uncertainties due to its assumption of a single average emission factor for each pollutant and each vehicle category under specific conditions. The relative uncertainties of SLR and PMF are comparable.

Molecular and elemental marker-based source apportionment of fine particulate matter at six sites in Hong Kong, China

Source apportionment of PM_2.5 was performed using positive matrix factorization (PMF) based on chemical speciation data from 24-h filters collected throughout 2015 at six sampling sites of varying urban influences in Hong Kong. The input data include major inorganic ions, organic and elemental carbon, elements, and organic tracers. Nine factors were resolved, including (1) secondary sulfate formation process, (2) secondary nitrate formation process, (3) industrial emissions, (4) biomass burning, (5) primary biogenic emissions, (6) vehicle emissions, (7) residual oil combustion, (8) dust, and (9) aged sea salt. The PMF-resolved factor contributions in conjunction with air mass back trajectories showed that the two major sources for PM_2.5 mass, secondary sulfate (annual: 41%) and secondary nitrate (annual: 9.9%), were dominantly associated with regional and super-regional pollutant transport. Vehicular emissions are the most important local source, and its contributions exhibit a clear spatial variation pattern, with the highest (6.9 μg/m³, 24% of PM_2.5) at a downtown roadside location and the lowest (0.4 μg/m³, 2.0% PM_2.5) at two background sites away from city centers. The ability of producing a more reliable source separation and identifying new sources (e.g. primary biogenic source in this study) was a direct advantageous result of including organic tracers in the PMF analysis. PMF analysis conducted on the same dataset in this study but without including the organic tracers failed to separate the biomass burning emissions and industrial/coal combustion emissions. PMF analysis without the organic tracers would also over-apportion the contribution of vehicular emissions to PM_2.5, which would bias the evaluation of the effectiveness of vehicle-related control measures. This work demonstrates the importance of organic markers in achieving more comprehensive and less biased source apportionment results.

FT-ICR mass spectrometry for molecular characterization of water-insoluble organic compounds in winter atmospheric fine particulate matters

Water-insoluble organic compounds (WIOCs) are an important fraction of atmospheric fine particulate matters (PM_2.5), which could affect the climate system and threaten human health potentially. In this study, molecular characterization of WIOCs in PM_2.5 were investigated by 15 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) source in positive ion mode. A total of 2573 and 1875 molecular formulas were identified in WIOCs extracted by dichloromethane, which were collected in hazy and normal days, respectively. The identified molecular formulas were further classified into four major subgroups, including CH, CHN, CHO and CHNO compounds. CHO compounds predominated in WIOCs, accounting for more than 60% in both samples. CHNO compounds (26.6%) and CH compounds (16.1%) were the second highest subgroups in WIOCs from the hazy days and normal days, respectively. The relative abundance and number of nitro-substituted aromatic compounds were significantly higher in hazy days than in normal days. The molecular composition of WIOCs was more complex in hazy days while more aromatic compounds were identified in normal days.

[Design and application of online derivatization device for polar organics on atmospheric particulate filter]

An online derivatization device for the analysis of polar organic compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is designed. The derivatization reaction occurs in the hot GC injection port, and this is also known as injection port derivatization (IPD). IPD is usually performed in two ways: 1) direct IPD and 2) ion-pair extraction, followed by IPD. In both cases, the derivatization reagent reacts in liquid form. However, a method for online derivatization using gaseous derivatization reagents is provided. A special needle is designed and placed on the carrier gas transfer line to the injection port. The carrier gas is introduced into a glass bottle containing the derivative reagent (N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide, MSTFA), and then, the gaseous derivative reagent in the headspace is pressed out and introduced into the injection port of the GC instrument at a constant speed. The filter to be analyzed is placed directly in the liner, and the polar organic compounds on the filter react with gaseous MSTFA at 310 ℃ for 10 min in the injection port. During derivatization, the column oven is maintained at room temperature, and all the derivatives stay on the column head. When the reaction is complete, the MSTFA supply is ceased. The oven temperature is programmed, and the solvent delay is set until the excessive MSTFA is removed. The derivatives are allowed to pass through the column and analyzed by the MS detector. To prevent a large number of derivative reagents from entering the column, the injection port is set in split mode with a split ratio of 5∶1. Variables such as the injection-port temperature and derivatization time are investigated. The GC-MS responses of the ten silylated derivatives increase with increasing injection-port temperature (290-310 ℃), indicating that high temperatures can enhance the silylation efficiency. The derivatization times were also investigated. The GC-MS responses increased with an increase in the reaction time from 0 to 10 min, while higher temperatures or longer reaction times lead to the loss of some derivatives. The reproducibility of the derivatization reaction was 0.27% to 7.28%, and the linear correlation coefficient was 0.976-0.996. This device can be used for the online silylation of most polar organic compounds such as organic acids, alcohols, and phenols. The advantage of this device over offline derivatization is that the derivatization reagent and derivatives are protected by helium, which eliminates the risk of decomposition caused by moisture in the air, and the high temperature assists the reaction. The analytes were directly desorbed on the filter and derived online, and the sample quantity required was only 1/200 of that in the traditional solvent extraction method. Meanwhile, only the gaseous part of the headspace in the derivative reagent bottle was used, and the amount of derivative reagent was greatly reduced. Additionally, the operation is simple and solvent free, the entire analytical procedure was executed in a "green" manner. A PM2.5 filter was analyzed, and 26 different polar compounds were successfully derived, including monoacids, binary acids, aromatic acids, and alcohols, covering most of the common target polar compounds in atmospheric chemical analysis. Polyols such as glucose and sorbose that bear 5-6 hydroxyl groups and have large steric hindrance were also successfully derived. This device is expected to be an efficient and convenient analytical tool for tracing the sources of organic matter in atmospheric particles such as soil dust, biomass combustion, cooking oil smoke, and automobile exhaust, or for investigating atmospheric photochemical reactions. This gas-phase derivatization provides new insights for the development of chromatographic analysis methods for polar compounds. This device is simple and modular, and it has a wide range of applications; it is suitable for different brands of gas chromatographs and has great prospects for commercialization.

Thermal Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Atmospheric 2.5 μm Particulate Matter Collected on a Filter Paper Using a High-Temperature Headspace Method

Recently, owing to the performance improvement of the headspace (HS)-sampling devices and its consumables, HS vial samples can be analyzed at temperatures up to 300°C. Some studies have attempted to analyze polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric 2.5 μm particulate matter (PM 2.5) collected on a filter paper by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) coupled with thermal desorption device. However, no studies have reported the use of an HS-sampling device to quantify PAHs in PM 2.5 filter paper. In this study, we found that the quantification of PAH analysis using HS-GC/MS can be improved by the following steps, so that the accuracy becomes almost the same as that of a solvent-extraction method: 1) replacement of the air in the HS vial with nitrogen, 2) limiting the solvent to toluene, 3) using the hydrolyzed polyimide-covered septum, and 4) optimization of the heating temperature and heating time of the HS vial. As a result, we succeeded in protecting PAHs in an HS vial at a high temperature and in creating an analysis method with a high recovery rate and high repeatability; the limit of quantitation of each PAH in this method was 5.4 pg m^-3 in the case of a volume of 10080 m³ of air being collected on the filter paper.

The oxidative capacity of indoor source combustion derived particulate matter and resulting respiratory toxicity

Indoor air pollution sources with emissions of fine particles (PM_2.5), including environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and incense smoke (IS) deteriorate indoor air quality and may cause respiratory diseases in humans. This study characterized the emission factors (EFs) of five types of tobacco and incense in Hong Kong using an environmental chamber. Human alveolar epithelial cells (A549) were exposed to PM_2.5 collected from different indoor sources to determine their cytotoxicity. The PM_2.5 EF of ETS (109.7±36.5 mg/g) was higher than IS (97.1±87.3 mg/g). The EFs of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbonyls for IS were higher than ETS, and these two combustion sources showed similar distributions of individual PAHs and carbonyls. Oxidative damage and inflammatory responses (i.e. DNA damage, 8-hydroxy-desoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interlukin-6 (IL-6)) of A549 cells was triggered by exposure to PM_2.5 generated from ETS and IS. Different indoor sources showed different responses to oxidative stress and inflammations due to the accumulation effects of mixed organic compounds. High molecular weight PAHs from incense combustion showed higher correlations with DNA damage markers, and most of the PAHs from indoor sources demonstrated significant correlations with inflammation. Exposure to anthropogenic produced combustion emissions such as ETS and IS results in significant risks (e.g. lung cancer) to the alveolar epithelium within the distal human respiratory tract, of which incense emissions posed a higher cytotoxicity.

Chemical and toxicological characterization of particulate emissions from diesel vehicles

This paper presents a detailed chemical and toxicological characterization of the diesel particulate matter (PM) emitted from diesel vehicles running on a chassis dynamometer under different driving conditions. Chemical analyses were performed to characterize the contents of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and 31 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the collected PM samples. The OC-EC analysis results revealed that PM emissions from diesel vehicles in this study were dominated by OC and that the emission of vehicles equipped with diesel particulate filters had high OC/EC ratios. The PAH analysis results revealed that 4- and 5-ring PAHs were the dominant PAHs in the OC fraction of the PM samples. Particle toxicity was evaluated through three toxicological markers in human A549 cells, namely (1) acellular 2,7-dichlorofluorescein (DCFH) for oxidative potential, (2) interleukin-6 (IL-6) for inflammation, and (3) glutathione (GSH) for antioxidation after exposure. Statistical analyses revealed that vehicle sizes have statistically significant effects on the concentrations of the markers. Correlation analysis between PAHs and toxicological markers revealed that significant correlations existed between specific compounds and markers. Our results can be used as a reference by policy makers to formulate emission control strategies and as a dataset for other modeling studies.

The formation and evolution of parent and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during a severe winter haze-fog event over Xi'an, China

In this study, 3- or 4-h high time-resolved PM_2.5 was observed during a severe winter haze-fog event (1 to 6 January 2017) to investigate the formation and evolution of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pPAHs) and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) in Xi'an, a typical city in northwestern China. Three episodes (episode I, episode II, and rainy day (EI, EII, and RD)) have been identified during this haze-fog event. Nine water-soluble ions, 8 carbonaceous fractions, 18 pPAHs, and 3 OPAHs in PM_2.5 were measured. pPAHs showed two peaks at around 12:00 local standard time (LST) and 24:00 LST and two troughs at around 2:00 LST and 18:00 LST during EI. However, the OPAHs presented highest at around 18:00 LST and lowest at around 2:00 LST. During EII, pPAHs and OPAHs displayed similar diurnal variations with the highest values at noon but lowest values at around 2:00-5:00 LST. In addition, no obvious diurnal variations of pPAHs and OPAHs were observed during RD were absent during RD. Diurnal variations of pPAH ring distributions demonstrated coal combustion, and vehicle emissions contributed to pPAHs for three episodes, which is further confirmed by diagnostic ratio results. High oxygenation (R_o) rates were found during the sampling time, which favored OPAH formation. The study herein indicates that OPAH formation through complex atmospheric reactions provides us new insights into the severe haze-fog events.

Parent, alkylated, oxygenated and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 emitted from residential biomass burning and coal combustion: A novel database of 14 heating scenarios

To characterize the emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from residential biomass burning and coal combustion in field environments, smoke samples were collected from the combustion of six types of biomass in heated kangs and four types of coal in traditional stoves and semi-gasifier stoves. The emission factors (EFs) of the total PAH were in the range of 84.5-344 mg/kg for biomass burning, with lower EFs for biomass with higher densities, and in the range of 38.0-206 mg/kg for coal combustion, with lower EFs for coals with higher maturity. Moreover, EFs were lower from high-density biomass fuels (wood trunk, 84.5 ± 11.3 mg/kg) than low-maturity coals (bituminous coal, 206 ± 16.5 mg/kg). Parent, oxygenated, alkylated, and nitrated PAHs accounted for 81.1%, 12.6%, 6.2%, and 0.1%, respectively, of the total-PAH EFs from biomass burning, and 84.7%, 13.8%, 1.4%, and 0.1%, respectively, of the total-PAH EFs from coal combustion. PAH source profiles differed negligibly between biomass fuels but differed significantly between bituminous coal and anthracite coal fuels. The characteristic species of sources were phenanthrene, 9-fluorenone, and 2-nitrobiphenyl for biomass burning, and were phenanthrene, benzo[ghi]perylene, 1,4-naphthoquinone, and 2-nitrobiphenyl for coal combustion. The ratios of benzo[b]fluoranthene/(benzo[b]fluoranthene + benzo[k]fluoranthene) were 0.40-0.45 for biomass burning and 0.89-0.91 for coal combustion, and these significantly different values constitute unique markers for distinguishing these fuels in source apportionment. Benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent factor emissions were 2.79-11.3 mg/kg for biomass and 7.49-41.9 mg/kg for coal, where parent PAHs contributed 92.0%-95.1% from biomass burning and 98.6%-98.8% from coal combustion. Total-PAH emissions from residential heating were 1552 t across Shaanxi province, to which wheat straw (445 t) in biomass burning and bituminous coal (438 t) in coal combustion were the highest contributors. Results from this study provide crucial knowledge for the source identification of PAHs as well as for the design of abatement strategies against pollutant emissions.

Cytotoxicity of PM2.5 vehicular emissions in the Shing Mun Tunnel, Hong Kong

Associations between human exposures to vehicular emissions (VE) and cardiopulmonary diseases have been found, with a dearth of information on particle cytotoxicity. This study exposes human lung alveolar epithelial (A549) cells to PM_2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm) samples collected in a tunnel and investigates the oxidative and inflammatory responses. The cytotoxicity factor (CF) is used to normalize the VE cytotoxicity. The emission factors (EFs) were 27.2 ± 12.0 mg vehicle^-1 km^-1 for PM_2.5 and 4.93 ± 1.67 μg vehicle^-1 km^-1 for measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Higher EFs were found for high (4-6 rings) than low (2-3 rings) molecular-weight particulate PAHs. PM_2.5 VE caused oxidative stress and inflammation of human lung cells. Organic carbon (OC), element carbon (EC), and several PAHs were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with bioreactivity. Higher CFs were found when diesel vehicle counts were highest during the morning rush hour, implying that diesel-fueled VE were major contributors to cytotoxic effects. This study provides a broader understanding of the toxicity in an engine-exhaust dominated environment.

Vertical distribution of source apportioned PM2.5 using particulate-bound elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in an urban area

Receptor models have been widely used for identifying and quantifying source-specific contributions from mixtures of air pollutants. Nonetheless, our knowledge is still limited on how various components of air pollution are vertically distributed and the sources of such pollutants. In this study, we collected 135 samples of PM_2.5 (particles with aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 µm) from building balconies at three altitudes in the metropolis of Taipei (Taiwan) and analyzed the samples for elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that could be used to identify the sources of those pollutants. We used positive matrix factorization (PMF) to identify seven likely sources, including combustion, sulfur-rich aerosol, fresh traffic, industry/Cr-rich, oil combustion/vehicle, dust, and traffic. Although PM_2.5 mass differed significantly between low-level and mid-level sites, the largest contributor to PM_2.5 mass (sulfur-rich aerosol, 35.2%) showed nonsignificant variation in the vertical distribution. In contrast, oil combustion/vehicle, which exhibited significant difference between mid-level sites and the other two altitudes, might be a determinant in the vertical variation of PM_2.5. We also observed negative trends with sampling height for combustion and traffic emissions.

Parent, alkylated, oxygenated and nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from raw coal chunks and clean coal combustion: Emission factors, source profiles, and health risks

Residential coals are still inevitable using in developing areas in China. Clean coal briquettes, normally using alkaline substance such as lime or red mud (RM) as the additive, were helpful in pollution emission reduction even without changes of stoves. Studies of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission characteristics from RM clear coal combustion were limited. In this study, emission factors (EFs), sources profiles, and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM_2.5 were investigated for raw coal chunks and clean coal (with red mud) through combustion experiments. EFs of total PAHs were found to be 160.1 ± 100.9 mg·kg^-1 and 19.4 ± 6.1 mg·kg^-1 for bituminous and anthracite raw coal chunks (B-C and A-C), respectively. EFs values were highest for parent PAHs (p-PAHs), followed by oxygenated PAHs (o-PAHs), alkylated PAHs (a-PAHs), and nitro PAHs (n-PAHs). EFs of p-PAHs account for 80% and 52% of total PAHs emissions for B-C and A-C, respectively, while those for o-PAHs are 22.9% and 44.9%, demonstrating residential coal combustion as a significant primary source for p-PAHs and o-PAHs. Clean coals were developed through cold-press technology with red mud (RM) as additive, and clean coals with RM contents of 10% are referred to as B-10% (bituminous) and A-10% (anthracite). Compared to raw coals chunks, EFs were reduced from 128.1, 2.5, 29.3 mg·kg^-1 and 161.8 μg·kg^-1 to 83.5, 1.3, 16.4 mg·kg^-1 and 102.2 μg·kg^-1 by B-10%, and from 10.1, 0.6, 8.7 mg·kg^-1 and 20.6 μg·kg^-1 to 11.9, 0.2, 2.4 mg·kg^-1 and 15.3 μg·kg^-1 by A-10% for p-PAHs, o-PAHs, a-PAHs and n-PAHs, respectively. Diagnostic ratios of 5-Nitroacenaphthene / Acenaphthene (0.02-0.05 for coal, 0.0002 for biomass) can be used to separate residential coal and biomass burning in source analysis. When B-C was replaced by B-10%, both noncancer (0.58 to 0.33 for male, 1.65 to 0.95 for female in hazard quotient) and cancer risks (5.68 × 10^-4 to 2.73 × 10^-4 for male, 2.63 × 10^-3 to 1.27 × 10^-3 for female) can be reduced. o-PAHs should be paid more attention because of its high cancer risks caused by 6H-Benzo(C,D)Pyrene-6-One (1.74 × 10^-5 for male, 8.07 × 10^-5 for female), which are even more than the total risks caused by n-PAHs (3.59 × 10^-7 for male, 1.66 × 10^-6 for female). Results from this study highlighted the environment and health effects of PAHs originated from residential coal combustion, and proposed an effective way by using clean coal to alleviate the associated negative impacts.

Non-polar organic compounds, volatility and oxidation reactivity of particulate matter emitted from diesel engine fueled with ternary fuels in blended and fumigation modes

The present experimental study aims to examine the impacts of various fueling modes of operation on the particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes (C16-C30), and volatility and oxidation reactivity of particulate matter (PM) emitted from a diesel engine fueled with a ternary fuel (80% diesel, 5% biodiesel and 15% ethanol (D80B5E15, volume %)) under four engine operating conditions. Four fueling modes, including diesel, blended, fumigation and combined fumigation + blended (F + B) modes were tested using pure diesel fuel for diesel mode and a constant fuel content of D80B5E15 for the blended, fumigation and F + B modes to create the same condition for comparing their impacts on the parameters investigated. The average results illustrate that both blended and fumigation modes can reduce the PAHs (-78.4% and -31.3%), benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (-81.7% and -38.9%), n-alkanes (-46.5% and -21.5%) and non-volatile substance fraction (-25.1% and -11.1%), but increase the high-volatile substance fraction (12.8% and 6.9%) and oxidation reactivity rate (34.0% and 4.9%), respectively compared to those of the diesel mode. While the effect of the blended mode on the parameters investigated is stronger than the fumigation mode. And the F + B mode has the effects in between the results of the blended and fumigation modes.

Application of thermal desorption methods for airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon measurement: A critical review

Thermal desorption (TD) is a universal solvent-free pre-concentration technique. It is often used to pre-concentrate semi-volatile and volatile organic compounds in various sample types. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread contaminants from incomplete combustion of organic matter and fossil fuel, which have carcinogenic effects on human health. Conventional methods for determining PAHs, represented by solvent extraction, are gradually being replaced by solvent-free methods, typically the TD technique, because of TD's many advantages, including time savings and environmentally friendly treatment. This work presents an extensive review of the universal methods used to determine PAHs in the atmosphere based on the TD technique. The methods currently used for collection and detection of both gas- and particle-phase PAHs in the air are critically reviewed. In addition, the operating parameters of the TD unit are summarized and discussed. The design shortcomings of existing studies and the problems that researchers should address are presented, and promising alternatives are suggested. This paper also discusses important parameters, such as reproducibility and limit of detection, that form a crucial part of quality assurance. Finally, the limitations and the future prospects of the TD technique for use in airborne PAH analyses are addressed. This is the first review of the latest developments of the TD technique for analysis of PAHs and their derivatives in the atmosphere.

Season and size of urban particulate matter differentially affect cytotoxicity and human immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Exposure to air pollution particulate matter (PM) and tuberculosis (TB) are two of the leading global public health challenges affecting low and middle income countries. An estimated 4.26 million premature deaths are attributable to household air pollution and an additional 4.1 million to outdoor air pollution annually. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) infects a large proportion of the world's population with the risk for TB development increasing during immunosuppressing conditions. There is strong evidence that such immunosuppressive conditions develop during household air pollution exposure, which increases rates of TB development. Exposure to urban air pollution has been shown to alter the outcome of TB therapy. Here we examined whether in vitro exposure to urban air pollution PM alters human immune responses to M.tb. PM2.5 and PM10 (aerodynamic diameters <2.5μm, <10μm) were collected monthly from rainy, cold-dry and warm-dry seasons in Iztapalapa, a highly populated TB-endemic municipality of Mexico City with elevated outdoor air pollution levels. We evaluated the effects of seasonality and size of PM on cytotoxicity and antimycobacterial host immunity in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from interferon gamma (IFN-γ) release assay (IGRA)+ and IGRA- healthy study subjects. PM10 from cold-dry and warm-dry seasons induced the highest cytotoxicity in PBMC. With the exception of PM2.5 from the cold-dry season, pre-exposure to all seasonal PM reduced M.tb phagocytosis by PBMC. Furthermore, M.tb-induced IFN-γ production was suppressed in PM2.5 and PM10-pre-exposed PBMC from IGRA+ subjects. This observation coincides with the reduced expression of M.tb-induced T-bet, a transcription factor regulating IFN-γ expression in T cells. Pre-exposure to PM10 compared to PM2.5 led to greater loss of M.tb growth control. Exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 collected in different seasons differentially impairs M.tb-induced human host immunity, suggesting biological mechanisms underlying altered M.tb infection and TB treatment outcomes during air pollution exposures.

Personal exposure to PM2.5-bound organic species from domestic solid fuel combustion in rural Guanzhong Basin, China: Characteristics and health implication

Domestic solid fuels combustion produces a mass of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5). PM_2.5-bound organics, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs), phthalate esters (PAEs) and hopanes, were quantified in indoor, outdoor and personal exposure samples collected in rural Guanzhong Basin, China. The average concentration of total quantified PAHs in personal exposure samples was 310 ± 443 ng m^-3, 1.5 times of those of indoor (211 ± 120 ng m^-3) and outdoor (189 ± 115 ng m^-3). Similar observations were found for the OPAHs and PAEs, i.e., much higher concentrations were seen in personal exposure samples. Hopanes average personal exposure concentration (13 ± 9.7 ng m^-3) was comparable to indoors (15 ± 9.7 ng m^-3) and outdoors (13 ± 9.6 ng m^-3). Among four common heating ways applied in Chinese dwelling, the highest exposure levels to PAHs, OPAHs and PAEs were found for indoor coal chunks stoves. Concentration under electric power was 1.2-4.5 folds lower than those with solid fuels in this study, proved to be the cleanest energy for the household heating. The exposures to PM_2.5 on cell viabilities were also investigated. The largest reduction of 70% on cell viabilities was seen for indoor coal chunks stove housewives, indicating that the emissions from coal combustion had the greatest cytotoxic effects. The results evidenced that the heating ways in rural area could greatly impact on the housewife health in northwestern China. Advanced heating technology and protection should be conducted to reduce the personal exposures to PM_2.5 from domestic solid fuel combustions.

Estimating contributions of vehicular emissions to PM2.5 in a roadside environment: A multiple approach study

Vehicular emissions (VE) are among the major sources of airborne fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) in urban atmospheres, which adversely impact the environment and public health. Receptor models are widely used for estimating PM_2.5 source contributions from VE (PM_vehicle), but often give inconsistent results due to different modelling principles and assumptions. During December 2015-May 2017, we collected nine-months of hourly organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) data, as well as 24-h PM_2.5 speciation data including major species and organic tracers on select days from an ad hoc roadside site in Hong Kong. The weekday vs. holiday and diurnal variations of EC tracked closely with those of traffic flow volume, indicating EC as a reliable tracer for PM_vehicle in this area. We applied multiple approaches to estimate the PM_vehicle, including the EC-tracer method with the hourly OC-EC data, and chemical mass balance (CMB) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analyses with the filter-based speciation data. Considering source profile variability, CMB gave the lowest PM_vehicle estimate among the three approaches, possibly due to the degradation of organic markers (i.e., hopanes). The PM_vehicle derived from the EC-tracer method and PMF were comparable, accounting for ~12% (3.4-4.0 μg/m³) of PM_2.5 averaged across 20 samples in both approaches, but a larger sample size is needed for a more robust PMF solution. The monthly PM_vehicle derived from the EC-tracer method was in the range of 3.2-6.6 μg/m³. The continuous measurement reveals a decreasing trend in PM_vehicle throughout the entire sampling period, indicating the effectiveness of a recent vehicle control measures implemented by the Government in phasing out pre-Euro IV diesel commercial vehicles. This work implies that hourly OC-EC monitoring at strategically located spots is an effective way of monitoring vehicle control measures. It provides reasonable estimate of PM_vehicle through comparing with other more sophisticated receptor models.

Molecular Characterization of Atmospheric Organic Aerosol by Mass Spectrometry

Atmospheric aerosol, particulate matter suspended in the air we breathe, exerts a strong impact on our health and the environment. Controlling the amount of particulate matter in air is difficult, as there are many ways particles can form by both natural and anthropogenic processes. We gain insight into the sources of particulate matter through chemical composition measurements. A substantial portion of atmospheric aerosol is organic, and this organic matter is exceedingly complex on a molecular scale, encompassing hundreds to thousands of individual compounds that distribute between the gas and particle phases. Because of this complexity, no single analytical technique is sufficient. However, mass spectrometry plays a crucial role owing to its combination of high sensitivity and molecular specificity. This review surveys the various ways mass spectrometry is used to characterize atmospheric organic aerosol at a molecular level, tracing these methods from inception to current practice, with emphasis on current and emerging areas of research. Both offline and online approaches are covered, and molecular measurements with them are discussed in the context of identifying sources and elucidating the underlying chemical mechanisms of particle formation. There is an ongoing need to improve existing techniques and develop new ones if we are to further advance our knowledge of how to mitigate the unwanted health and environmental impacts of particles.

Characterization of particulate-bound polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and their oxidations in heavy polluted atmosphere: A case study in urban Beijing, China during haze events

Characterizations on polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) during frequent haze periods have been conducted in an urban site of Beijing, China. Particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) and other carbonaceous matters were quantified. The average PM_2.5 during haze events (256.3 ± 103.7 μg/m³) were one magnitude over than that of clear periods (CRs, 24.7 ± 27.7 μg/m³).The average total quantified PAHs (ΣPAHs) and OPAHs (ΣOPAHs) during haze events were 423.9 ± 178.4 ng/m³ and 581.4 ± 299.8 ng/m³, respectively, which were approximately 10 times higher than those of 40.3 ± 68.2 ng/m³ and 54.4 ± 82.4 ng/m³ in clear days. Four-rings PAHs had the highest compositions. 1,8-Naphthalic anhydride (1,8-NA) is the most abundant OPAHs, accounted for 49.8% of ∑OPAHs, followed by 9,10-anthraquinone (9,10-AQ) (13.8%) and benzo(a)anthracene-7,12-dione (BaAQ) (8.31%). In haze events, the contents of 5- to 7-rings PAHs decreased by 2.32% compared with those of clear days, while lower molecular weight fractions of 3- and 4-rings PAHs increased. The relationships between PAHs, OPAHs and relative humidity (RH) were found to be exponential. High oxygenation rate (R₀) ratios of OPAH/PAH represents higher rates in secondary formation or degradation and gas- particle conversion for each PAH or OPAH during the wintertime. Significant positive correlation between BeP and OPAHs (r = 0.97), combined with the results of photochemical aging and negatively correlation with O₃, suggest that secondary atmospheric reactions of PAHs played an important role in the burden of OPAHs.

PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Beijing: Seasonal variations, sources, and risk assessment

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been of health concern due to its carcinogenesis and mutagenesis. In this study, we aimed to assess the variations, sources, and lifetime excessive cancer risk (ECR) attributable to PAHs bound to ambient particulate matters with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5μm (PM_2.5) in metropolitan Beijing, China. We collected 24-hour integrated PM_2.5 samples on daily basis between November 2014 and June 2015 across both central heating (cold months) and non-heating (warm months) seasons, and further analyzed the PAH components in these daily PM_2.5 samples. Our results showed that total concentrations of PM_2.5-bound PAHs varied between (88.6±75.4)ng/m³ in the cold months and (11.0±5.9)ng/m³ in the warm months. Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), the carcinogenic marker of PAHs, averaged at 5.7 and 0.4ng/m³ in the cold and warm months, respectively. Source apportionment analyses illustrated that gasoline, biomass burning, diesel, coal combustion and cooking were the major contributors, accounting for 12.9%, 17.8%, 24.7%, 24.3% and 6.4% of PM_2.5-bound PAHs, respectively. The BaP equivalent lifetime ECR from inhalation of PM_2.5-bound PAHs was 16.2 cases per million habitants. Our results suggested that ambient particulate reduction from energy reconstruction and adaption of clean fuels would result in reductions PM_2.5-bound PAHs and its associated cancer risks. However, as only particulate phased PAHs was analyzed in the present study, the concentration of ambient PAHs could be underestimated.

Use of inorganic and organic markers associated with their directionality for the apportionment of highly correlated sources of particulate matter

Particulate matter source identification using receptor models is one of the tools applied in air quality management. These models have limitations such as the collinearity effects, hindering their application and interpretation. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) models use chemical markers for the definition of likely sources, leaving to users the factors interpretation. This can lead to biased interpretations, as chemical species can be markers for several sources, particularly when there is source similarity. The Region of Greater Vitória, located southeast of Brazil, is a complex site in which similar industrial activities are installed, such as a pelletizing plant and a steel plant, that produce iron pellets and sinter, both iron-agglomerates with similar chemical profiles. To minimize the effects of collinearity between those sources, a new PMF approach is proposed by using inorganic and organic chemical species and the directionality of pollutant using wind roses. The proposed methodology determines the following consolidated markers: elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) for vehicular sources; chloride (Cl) and sodium (Na) for sea salt; iron (Fe) for industrial sources. This association was possible by identifying the directionality of the chemical species. Cl a typical sea salt marker also attributed to industrial sintering activities. Some PMF factors showed high OC loadings, a typical marker for both vehicular exhaust and coal burning. The definition of the most appropriate sources for those factors was only possible due to the assessment of the pollutant roses. Pollutant roses generally showed that higher concentrations of potassium (K), a marker of biomass burning, was predominantly associated with winds from an industrial park, and are most likely associated with sintering emissions. Results showed that combining both organic and inorganic markers with the pollutant roses for identification of the directionality of predominant sources improved the interpretation of PMF factor numbers in source apportionment studies.

Quartz filter-based thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry for in-situ molecular level measurement of ambient organic aerosols

Thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography (TAG) is an effective technique for online chemical characterization of organics in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) on the molecular level. Unlike the previously reported impactor- or metal filter-based TAG, in this study, a replaceable quartz filter-based TAG (Q-TAG) was developed to achieve online measurement of organic constituents in ambient PM_2.5. A homemade device for automatic online sampling and pretreatment of aerosols was developed and coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) by a 4-port valve. Performance of the Q-TAG system was evaluated using C7 - C40 n-alkanes to cover a wide range of volatility. C11 - C40 could be measured by Q-TAG. The response of their peaks depends on their volatility and thermal desorption conditions (the desorption time and the flow rate). Under the optimized conditions, good precision (<12%), acceptable linearity (R²> 0.98) and high sensitivity (detection limits from 0.02 to 0.01 ng) of C13 - C40 were obtained. The developed Q-TAG system was applied for online analysis of organic species in ambient PM_2.5. The Q-TAG is suitable for detection of semi and low volatile organic species in particulate matter, and its filter can be easily changed, making it a useful tool in molecular characterization of ambient organic aerosols.

Spatial Patterns in Rush-Hour vs. Work-Week Diesel-Related Pollution across a Downtown Core

Despite advances in monitoring and modelling of intra-urban variation in multiple pollutants, few studies have attempted to separate spatial patterns by time of day, or incorporated organic tracers into spatial monitoring studies. Due to varying emissions sources from diesel and gasoline vehicular traffic, as well as within-day temporal variation in source mix and intensity (e.g., rush-hours vs. full-day measures), accurately assessing diesel-related air pollution within an urban core can be challenging. We allocated 24 sampling sites across downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2.8 km²) to capture fine-scale variation in diesel-related pollutants, and to compare these patterns by sampling interval (i.e., “rush-hours” vs. “work-week” concentrations), and by season. Using geographic information system (GIS)-based methods, we allocated sampling sites to capture spatial variation in key traffic-related pollution sources (i.e., truck, bus, overall traffic densities). Programmable monitors were used to collect integrated work-week and rush-hour samples of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), black carbon (BC), trace elements, and diesel-related organics (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes, steranes), in summer and winter 2014. Land use regression (LUR) models were created for PM_2.5, BC, total elemental carbon (EC), total organic carbon (OC), elemental (Al, Ca, Fe), and organic constituents (total PAHs, total hopanes), and compared by sampling interval and season. We hypothesized higher pollution concentrations and greater spatial contrast in rush-hour, compared to full work-week samples, with variation by season and pollutant. Rush-hour sampling produced slightly higher total PM_2.5 and BC concentrations in both seasons, compared to work-week sampling, but no evident difference in spatial patterns. We also found substantial spatial variability in most trace elements and organic compounds, with comparable spatial patterns using both sampling paradigms. Overall, we found higher concentrations of traffic-related trace elements and organic compounds in rush-hour samples, and higher concentrations of coal-related elements (e.g., As, Se) in work-week samples. Mean bus density was the strongest LUR predictor in most models, in both seasons, under each sampling paradigm. Within each season and constituent, the bus-related terms explained similar proportions of variance in the rush-hour and work-week samples. Rush-hour and work-week LUR models explained similar proportions of spatial variation in pollutants, suggesting that the majority of emissions may be produced during rush-hour traffic across downtown. Results suggest that rush-hour emissions may predominantly shape overall spatial variance in diesel-related pollutants.

Characterization and health risk assessment of airborne pollutants in commercial restaurants in northwestern China: Under a low ventilation condition in wintertime

Impacts on indoor air quality of dining areas from cooking activities were investigated in eight categories of commercial restaurants including Szechwan Hotpot, Hunan, Shaanxi Noodle, Chinese Barbecue, Chinese Vegetarian, Korean Barbecue, Italian, and Indian, in Northwestern China during December 2011 to January 2012. Chemical characterization and health risk assessment for airborne carbonyls, and particulate-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals were conducted under low ventilation conditions in wintertime. The highest total quantified carbonyls (Σ_carbonyls) concentration of 313.6μgm^-3 was found in the Chinese Barbecue, followed by the Szechwan Hotpot (222.6μgm^-3) and Indian (221.9μgm^-3) restaurants. However, the highest Σ_carbonyls per capita was found at the Indian restaurant (4500μgcapita^-1), suggesting that cooking methods such as stir-fly and bake for spices ingredients released more carbonyls from thermal cooking processes. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone were the three most abundant species, totally accounting for >60% of mass concentrations of the Σ_carbonyls. Phenanthrene, chrysene, and benzo[a]anthracene were the three most abundant PAHs. Low molecular weight fraction (ΣPAHs_≤178) had the highest contributions accounting for 40.6%-65.7%, much greater than their heaver counterparts. Diagnostic PAHs ratios suggest that cooking fuel and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) contribute to the indoor PAHs profiles. Lead was the most abundant heavy metal in all sampled restaurants. High quantity of nickel was also found in samples due to the emissions from stainless-steel made kitchen utensils and cookware and ETS. Cancer risk assessments on the toxic substances demonstrate that the working environment of dining areas were hazard to health. Formation of reactive organic species (ROS) from the cooking activities was evidenced by measurement of hydroxyl radical (OH) formed from simulating particulate matter (PM) react with surrogate lung fluid. The highest OH concentration of 294.4ngm^-3 was detected in Chinese Barbecue. In addition, the elevation of the concentrations of PM and OH after non-dining periods implies that the significance of formation of oxidizing-active species indoor at poor ventilation environments.

Personal exposure to fine particles (PM2.5) and respiratory inflammation of common residents in Hong Kong

BACKGROUND

Given the lack of research on the personal exposure to fine particles (PM_2.5) in Hong Kong, we examined the association between short-term personal exposure to PM_2.5 and their constituents and inflammation in exhaled breath in a sample of healthy adult residents.

METHOD

Forty-six participants underwent personal PM_2.5 monitoring for averagely 6 days to obtain 276 samples. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), a biomarker of inflammation in exhaled breath, was measured at the end of each 24-h personal monitoring. PM_2.5 chemical constituents, including organic carbon, elemental carbon, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and 6 phthalate esters, were speciated from the personal samples collected. A mixed-effects model was used to estimate the association of PM_2.5 and their constituents with FeNO. The comparison was also made with parallel analyses using ambient concentrations.

RESULTS

Personal exposures to PM_2.5 (28.1 ± 23.3 μg/m³) were higher than the ambient levels (13.3 ± 6.4 μg/m³) monitored by stations. The composition profile and personal-to-ambient concentration ratio varied among subjects with different occupations. An interquartile range (IQR) change in personal exposure to PM_2.5 was positively associated with 12.8% increase in FeNO (95% confidence interval, CI: 5.5-20.7%), while nil association was found for ambient PM_2.5. Among the constituents measured, only the carcinogenic PAHs were significantly associated with 12% increase in FeNO responses (95% CI, 0.0-25.6%).

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, our study provides the first understanding about personal exposure to PM_2.5 and possible sources in Hong Kong. The results also showed that personal exposure to PM_2.5 and c-PAHs were linked to increased FeNO levels among healthy adults.

Chemical characterization of PM2.5 from a southern coastal city of China: applications of modeling and chemical tracers in demonstration of regional transport

An intensive sampling campaign of airborne fine particles (PM_2.5) was conducted at Sanya, a coastal city in Southern China, from January to February 2012. Chemical analyses and mass reconstruction were used identify potential pollution sources and investigate atmospheric reaction mechanisms. A thermodynamic model indicated that low ammonia and high relative humidity caused the aerosols be acidic and that drove heterogeneous reactions which led to the formation of secondary inorganic aerosol. Relationships among neutralization ratios, free acidity, and air-mass trajectories suggest that the atmosphere at Sanya was impacted by both local and regional emissions. Three major transport pathways were identified, and flow from the northeast (from South China) typically brought the most polluted air to Sanya. A case study confirmed strong impact from South China (e.g., Pearl River Delta region) (contributed 76.8% to EC, and then this result can be extended to primary pollutants) when the northeast winds were dominant. The Weather Research Forecasting Black carbon model and trace organic markers were used to apportion local pollution versus regional contributions. Results of the study offer new insights into the atmospheric conditions and air pollution at this coastal city.

Trends in analytical techniques applied to particulate matter characterization: A critical review of fundaments and applications

Epidemiological studies have shown the association of airborne particulate matter (PM) size and chemical composition with health problems affecting the cardiorespiratory and central nervous systems. PM also act as cloud condensation nuclei (CNN) or ice nuclei (IN), taking part in the clouds formation process, and therefore can impact the climate. There are several works using different analytical techniques in PM chemical and physical characterization to supply information to source apportionment models that help environmental agencies to assess damages accountability. Despite the numerous analytical techniques described in the literature available for PM characterization, laboratories are normally limited to the in-house available techniques, which raises the question if a given technique is suitable for the purpose of a specific experimental work. The aim of this work consists of summarizing the main available technologies for PM characterization, serving as a guide for readers to find the most appropriate technique(s) for their investigation. Elemental analysis techniques like atomic spectrometry based and X-ray based techniques, organic and carbonaceous techniques and surface analysis techniques are discussed, illustrating their main features as well as their advantages and drawbacks. We also discuss the trends in analytical techniques used over the last two decades. The choice among all techniques is a function of a number of parameters such as: the relevant particles physical properties, sampling and measuring time, access to available facilities and the costs associated to equipment acquisition, among other considerations. An analytical guide map is presented as a guideline for choosing the most appropriated technique for a given analytical information required.

Evaluation on exposures to particulate matter at a junior secondary school: a comprehensive study on health risks and effective inflammatory responses in Northwestern China

Air pollutant measurement and respiratory inflammatory tests were conducted at a junior secondary school in Xi'an, Northwestern China. Hazardous substances including particulate matters (PMs), black carbon (BC) and particle-bounded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified both indoors and outdoors of the school. Source characterization with organic tracers and particle-size distribution demonstrated that the school's air was mostly polluted by combustion emissions from the surrounding environment. The evaluation of health assessment related to air quality was conducted by two methods, including potential risk estimation of air pollutants and direct respiratory inflammatory test. The incremental lifetime cancer risks associated with PAHs were estimated and were 1.62 × 10^-6 and 2.34 × 10^-6, respectively, for indoor and outdoor fine PMs. Both the values exceeded the threshold value of 1 × 10^-6, demonstrating that the carcinogenic PAHs are a health threat to the students. Respiratory inflammatory responses of 50 students who studied in the sample classroom were examined with a fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) test, with the aid of health questionnaires. The average FeNO concentration was 17.4 ± 8.5 ppb, which was slightly lower than the recommended level of 20 ppb established by the American Thoracic Society for children. However, a wide distribution and 6% of the values were > 35 ppb, suggesting that the potentials were still high for eosinophilic inflammation and responsiveness to corticosteroids. A preliminary interpretation of the relationship between air toxins and respiratory inflammatory response demonstrated the high exposure cancer risks and inflammatory responses of the students to PMs in the city.

Characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 emitted from different cooking activities in China

Nineteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM_2.5 emitted from five different cooking activities were characterized, and their influencing factors were determined. The total quantified particle-bounded PAH concentrations (ΣPAHs) in the airs from the cooking activities were 4.2-36.5-fold higher than those in corresponding backgrounds. The highest ΣPAHs were seen in cafeteria frying (783 ± 499 ng/m³), followed by meat roasting (420 ± 191 ng/m³), fish roasting (210 ± 105 ng/m³), snack-street boiling (202 ± 230 ng/m³), and cafeteria boiling (150 ± 65 ng/m³). The main influencing factors on the PAH emissions were cooking methods, fat contents in raw materials, and oil consumptions. Four- to six-ringed PAHs had the highest contributions to the ΣPAHs (avg. 87.5%). Diagnostic ratios of individual PAH were similar between the two charbroiling and other three conventional Chinese cooking methods, respectively, demonstrating the dominance of cooking methods in the PAH emissions. Remarkably high benzo(b)fluoranthene/benzo(k)fluoranthene (BbF/BkF) ratio (8.31) was seen in the snack-street boiling, attributed to the coal combustion as cooking fuel. Both fluoranthene/(fluoranthene + pyrene) [FLT/(FLT + PYR)] and benzo(a)anthracene/(benzo(a)anthracene + chrysene) [BaA/(BaA + CHR)] ratios were higher for the oil-based cooking than those from the water-based ones. In addition, two ratios of indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene/(indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene + benzo(g,h,i)perylene) [IPY/(IPY + BPE)] and benzo(a)pyrene/(benzo(a)pyrene + benzo(g,h,i)perylene) [BaP/(BaP + BPE)] were higher for two charbroiling than the three conventional Chinese cooking methods. The characterization work in this study is particularly important since cooking is a potential contributor of atmospheric PAHs in urban China. Carcinogenic potencies of PAHs were assessed by comparison with the air quality guideline and health risk estimation. The BaP and BaP equivalent were higher for the oil-based than the water-based cooking activities.

Source, health risk and composition impact of outdoor very fine particles (VFPs) to school indoor environment in Xi'an, Northwestern China

Very fine particles (VFPs, PM_0.25) are able to travel deeply into the respiratory tract and can produce adverse health effects, especially to children. Information on the VFPs in schools is generally lacking. We investigated the chemical compositions, sources and health risks of VFPs in a junior secondary school of Xi'an, China, during May 16th to 30th, 2012. The results showed that organic matter (37% and 39%), SO₄^2- (13% and 11%) and geological material (20% and 24%) were the major components of VFPs both outdoors and indoors. The VFP species indoors, such as SO₄^2- and elemental carbon, are mainly from outdoor origins, e.g. coal burning and traffic emissions. But particle resuspension by student activities, chalk dust and import from outdoors of soil dust also contributed to deteriorate air quality in the classroom. By contrast to outdoors, several indoor factors, like higher room temperature, limited volume and longer suspension time of classroom particles, can even lead to significant secondary pollutant production. Heavy metals (mainly from outside) bound to indoor VFPs are supposedly associated to non-cancer health risks, especially Pb through ingestion pathway and Mn through dermal contact. Outdoor VFPs may be associated to PAHs cancer health risks via inhalation way. This study confirms that both indoor and outdoor sources had contributions to indoor VFPs, and that VFPs health risk should be of higher concern in urban areas of Northwestern China.

Seasonal variation, spatial distribution and source apportionment for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at nineteen communities in Xi'an, China: The effects of suburban scattered emissions in winter

Seasonal variation and spatial distribution of PM_2.5 bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated at urban residential, commercial area, university, suburban region, and industry in Xi'an, during summer and winter time at 2013. Much higher levels of total PAHs were obtained in winter. Spatial distributions by kriging interpolations principle showed that relative high PAHs were detected in western Xi'an in both summer and winter, with decreasing trends in winter from the old city wall to the 2^nd-3rd ring road except for the suburban region and industry. Coefficients of diversity and statistics by SPSS method demonstrated that PAHs in suburban have significant differences (t < 0.05) with those in urban residential in both seasons. The positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) modeling indicated that biomass burning (31.1%) and vehicle emissions (35.9%) were main sources for PAHs in winter and summer in urban, which different with the suburban. The coal combustion was the main source for PAHs in suburban region, which accounted for 46.6% in winter and sharp decreased to 19.2% in summer. Scattered emissions from uncontrolled coal combustion represent an important source of PAHs in suburban in winter and there were about 135 persons in Xi'an will suffer from lung cancer for lifetime exposure at winter levels. Further studies are needed to specify the effluence of the scattered emission in suburban to the city and to develop a strategy for controlling those emissions and lighten possible health effects.

Characterization and health risk assessment of PM2.5-bound organics inside and outside of Chinese smoking lounges

PM_2.5 samples were collected at six indoor public places that contained dedicated smoking lounges. Samples were taken in the smoking lounges, at two indoor locations outside of the lounges, and in outdoor air near the venues. Organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and non-polar organic compounds including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), n-alkanes (n-C₁₆ to n-C₄₀), iso/anteiso-alkanes (C₂₉ to C₃₃), hopanes and phthalate esters (PAEs) were quantified. Average PM_2.5 levels of 170.2 ± 85.9 μg/m³ in the lounges exceeded limits of 25 μg/m³ set by World Health Organization (WHO); these levels were 5.4 and 3.9 times higher than those indoors and outdoors, respectively. High ratios of OC to PM_2.5, OC to EC, and PAHs diagnostic ratios in the lounges indicated contributions from environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). The maximum carbon number (C_max) and carbon preference indices (CPI) for n-alkanes showed ETS transport from the enclosed lounges to nearby indoor non-smoking areas. Iso/anteiso-alkanes in the lounges were 876.5 ng/m³, ∼80 times higher than outdoor levels. 17α(H)-21β(H),30-norhopane and 17α(H)-21β(H),(22R)-homohopane were much higher in the lounges than outdoor air, but they cannot be directly attributed to ETS. Estimated carcinogenic risks of PAHs in the lounges exceeded the acceptable level of 10^{- 6}.

Chemical characterization of size-segregated PM from different public transport modes and implications of source specific contribution to public exposure

To investigate the chemical properties of particulate matter (PM) in different public transport microenvironments in Hong Kong, the coarse (2.5-10 μm) and fine (<2.5 μm) PM samples were collected in three different types of transport modes including Mass Transit Railway (MTR)-Aboveground (AG), MTR Underground (UG), and Bus routes from October 2013 to April 2014. Average PM_2.5 concentrations through UG, AG, and Bus routes were 47.9, 86.8, and 43.8 μg m^-3, respectively, whereas the coarse PM concentrations were 4-5 folds less. The PM_2.5 total metal concentrations of AG route were 2.3 and 3.7 times of UG and BUS routes, respectively, compared to those in the other two routes. The most abundant metals at three stations in PM_2.5 and coarse PM were quite similar and mainly generated by frictional processes of wheels, rails, and brakes of the system as well as by the mechanical wearing of these parts. The most abundant PAH in three routes in PM_2.5 was ATRQN, followed by 2-MNA, and the sum of them contributed to 35 and 42% of total PAHs in coarse PM and PM_2.5, respectively. Crude oils, lubricant oil, diesel emissions would be the major sources of PAHs from MTR aboveground stations. The relative abundance of the n-alkanes among different samples was similar to the PAHs and the carbon preference index (CPI) values of the whole n-alkanes range were consistently from 0.99 to 1.04 among all samples indicating the significant contribution from the vehicle exhaust and fossil fuel burning. The concentrations of hopanes and steranes were higher in PM_2.5 than in coarse PM due to diesel and coal burning. These results may provide a unique opportunity to investigate source specific contribution of the PM pollutants to the commuter exposure in public transport.
