Abstract
This study explored the acceptability of Children and Teens in Charge of their Health (CATCH), a program for children with spina bifida or cerebral palsy to enhance their physical activity and diet. Qualitative interviews were conducted with children (n = 6) and their parents (n = 6) who participated in CATCH. Analysis used an environmental systems framework. Microsystem factors impacting acceptability of the program were: Children's motivations for change, their age, and their physical health. Mesosystem factors were: Use of virtual coaching and the relationship between coach and child. Macrosystem factors (e.g. Covid-19), did not impact acceptability, but affected some goal attainment strategies. CATCH was broadly acceptable to children and parents and shows promise as a health promotion program tailored to children with disabilities. An environmental systems framework can potentially help other health promotion programs enhance their acceptability and success.

Abstract
Background: Traditionally, adolescent participation in research has been tokenistic. Adolescents are rarely afforded the opportunity to influence decision-making in research designed to prevent obesity. Engaging adolescents in meaningful decision-making may enhance research translation. This review aimed to analyze the current modes and nature of adolescent participation in obesity prevention research decision-making. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's six-stage framework. Six major databases were searched for peer-reviewed primary research studies with adolescent participation related to obesity, physical activity, and diet. Modes of adolescent participation were categorized based on the Lansdown-UNICEF conceptual framework for measuring outcomes of adolescent participation. The framework outlines three modes of meaningful participation: (i) consultative, which involves taking opinions and needs into consideration; (ii) collaborative, where adolescents are partners in the decision-making process; and (iii) adolescent-led participation where adolescents have the capacity to influence the process and outcomes. The degree of involvement in research cycles was classified based on the National Health and Medical Research Council consumer engagement framework. Five stages of the research cycle were determined: identify, design and develop, conduct, analyze and disseminate. Results: In total, 126 papers describing 71 unique studies were identified. Of these, 69% (49/71) took place in the USA, and 85% (52/61) were conducted in minority or underserved communities, while males were more likely to be under-represented. In 49% (35/71) of studies, participation was consultative and 9% (6/71) of studies involved an adolescent-led approach. Furthermore, 87% (62/71) of studies incorporated adolescent participation in one or more of the research cycle's formative phases, which involve eliciting views, opinions and idea generation. Only 11% of studies engaged adolescents in all five stages of the research cycle where adolescents could have more influence over the research process. Conclusion: Meaningful adolescent participation in the obesity prevention research cycle is limited. Empowering and mobilizing equal partnership with adolescents should be at the forefront of all adolescent-related obesity prevention research.

Abstract
PURPOSE It is important to directly engage children and adolescents with disabilities (CAWD) in health promotion research to ensure their health needs are met. Arts-based research methods may help CAWD better express their ideas; photo-elicitation is one such technique, using self-captured photographs to enhance verbal descriptions of complex concepts. This review 1) summarizes findings from health promotion studies using photo-elicitation with CAWD; 2) explores benefits and challenges of using photo-elicitation; 3) identifies recommended photo-elicitation practices. MATERIALS AND METHODS A scoping review was conducted using rapid review principles. Four health and social science databases were searched (2009-2019) using terms related to children, adolescents, disability, and photo-elicitation. Articles meeting inclusion criteria were summarized and analyzed thematically. RESULTS Eight studies met inclusion criteria and explored a range of health promotion topics. Benefits of photo-elicitation included the ability to mediate communication and direct participants' focus. Challenges included difficulty operating a camera and understanding instructions about photograph subject matter. Four recommended practices were identified: 1) brainstorming photograph ideas; 2) photograph-taking training; 3) having CAWD select photographs for discussion; 4) limiting the number of photographs CAWD could capture. CONCLUSIONS Integrating practices to support CAWD in using photo-elicitation can help researchers more fully understand their health experiences.Implications for RehabilitationThere is a need to directly engage children and adolescents with disabilities to express themselves in health promotion research.The arts-based method of photo-elicitation may help children and adolescents with disabilities convey how they view and experience health.Children and adolescents with disabilities may need supports, including camera training, to participate in photo-elicitation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore how parents support the health behaviours of their child with a disability, and their motivations for registering their child in a health promotion program for children with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. METHODS Using a descriptive qualitative design, semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with individual parents (n = 8) and one group (n = 3) to explore their experiences of health promotion for their child with a disability. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify themes and patterns to develop an understanding of parental perspectives. RESULTS Three themes were identified in the analysis of parents' experiences supporting their children in health behaviours and registering them in a disability health promotion program: (1) Parents struggle to meet all of their child's health promotion needs; (2) Parents recognize the social components of healthy behaviours; and (3) Health promotion opportunities tailored for children with disabilities are limited. These themes were not mutually exclusive and had overlapping factors that influenced parental experiences. CONCLUSION Parents experience many challenges supporting the health behaviours of their children with disabilities. This study reinforces the need for accessible, developmentally appropriate, social health promotion programs for children with disabilities.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONChildren with disabilities frequently demonstrate significantly higher sedentary behaviours, lower rates of physical activity and consumption of high-fat foods than their typically developing peers.Promoting healthy behaviours such as healthy eating and physical activity among children with disabilities and their families is therefore crucial to the child's physical and psychosocial wellbeing.Parents of children with disabilities have sufficient health literacy and knowledge but report a lack of appropriate opportunities and strategies to support their child in developing healthy behaviours.Parents need increased availability and accessibility of socially inclusive programs that promote healthy behaviours for children of all physical and cognitive abilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To examine the process and mechanisms of delivering obesity interventions to physically disabled children/adolescents. METHODS PubMed, Medline, CINAHL Plus, Embase, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, ClinicalTrials.gov, Science Direct were systematically and manually searched for studies conducted in physically disabled children/adolescents (0-18 years). Included interventions were physical activity, diet and obesity prevention education. Included outcomes were body mass index (BMI)/weight and obesity prevention knowledge. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool aided methodological quality assessments. Data were extracted and delivery models were synthesized and narratively summarized using the social ecological model. RESULTS Seven studies of low (n = 4) and moderate (n = 3) scoring on methodological quality were eligible for inclusion. Study duration was 5 months or less (n = 5), 8 months (n = 1) and 2 years (n = 1). Interventions were delivered at home, school, hospital and rehabilitation centre through the internet, face-to-face and parents. No intervention was delivered at three or more levels of individual, interpersonal, institutional or community levels. No study reported significant outcomes on reduction in BMI/weight, or increase in obesity prevention knowledge. CONCLUSIONS Evidence reviewed in this study shows that obesity interventions for physically disabled children/adolescents lack both in delivery and design. Gaps revealed should be considered when developing interventions for this special population.

Abstract
The aim is to evaluate the feasibility of an intervention model with a client-centered goal-directed approach with the aim to enhance the child's participation in leisure activities, self-efficacy, and activity performance. A pilot intervention using a client-centered goal-directed approach and a single-subject design was performed. Two Swedish boys with neuropsychiatric diagnosis aged 12 and 14 years old were included, and 3 leisure activity goals were identified. The intervention was carried out over 8 weeks and took place in the adolescent's everyday environment and at the pediatric rehabilitation center. The goal attainment of participation goals (GAS), the perceived performance ability according to the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), the self-efficacy, and the participants' satisfaction were used to study the effect. The participants succeeded in attaining their leisure goals as specified by the GAS by achieving +2 on one goal and +1 on the other two goals. They estimated higher performance ability and self-efficacy in their goal performance. Participants, parents, and therapists were overall satisfied and found the intervention to be applicable and helpful in optimizing leisure participation. The intervention model with a client-centered goal-directed approach in which participants define their own leisure activity goals appears to be effective in increasing participation in leisure activities.

Abstract
Globally, overweight and obesity (OW/OB) levels are high among children, with rates surpassing the adult population. With such high pediatric OW/OB rates, it is imperative that risk factors are identified and explored. Thus, Davison and Birch developed an adapted framework, based on Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, which identifies and categorizes the factors in a child's life that put them at risk for OW/OB. While a socioecological perspective has been a useful tool for examining risk factors in typically developing pediatric populations, this holistic approach has not yet been applied to populations of children with disabilities, who are at an even higher risk of OW/OB than their typically developing peers. This commentary, therefore, explores Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Framework as applied to OW/OB by Davison and Birch, and critically examines its application to children with disabilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research to date with children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) has previously focused upon specific aspects of health (e.g., physical activity, nutrition). A broader focus on 'wellness' takes a positive approach to health by addressing how individuals can lead meaningful lives by focusing on their unique strengths and resources across multiple wellness dimensions, rather than focusing on deficits. OBJECTIVE This study, conducted in partnership with Special Olympics (SO), aimed to understand the state of perceived wellness and wellness-promoting behaviours of children and youth with IDD from multi-stakeholder perspectives (i.e., SO athletes, caregivers, and coaches). METHODS A cross-sectional Likert survey methodology was employed to generate data on the perceptions of multiple stakeholders on different wellness dimensions identified through a literature review and consultations with SO stakeholders. RESULTS Athletes, caregivers and coaches generally agreed rather than disagreed with wellness statements, with the exception of coaches' responses regarding healthy nutrition. Athletes agreed more than caregivers and coaches that they engaged in some wellness promoting behaviours (i.e., calming oneself down, participating in their communities). Athletes and coaches were more likely to agree than caregivers about athletes' positive outlook. CONCLUSION Athletes' perceptions of their own wellness are unique from those of caregivers and coaches. Focusing on wellness can broaden understandings of how to support young people with IDD by drawing on their strengths and resources to foster optimal health and a sense of wellness in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Children with physical disabilities are rarely included in interventions to promote healthy lifestyles, despite being at higher risk for suboptimal dietary and physical activity behaviours. The Children and Teens in Charge of their Health study explores the feasibility and acceptability of conducting a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a strengths-based, solution-focused coaching intervention for improving and sustaining physical activity and healthy dietary habits in children and young people with physical disabilities. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Thirty children aged 10-18 years with a diagnosis of spina bifida or cerebral palsy who are able to set healthy lifestyle goals will be recruited from two children's rehabilitation hospitals in Ontario, Canada. Participants will be enrolled in the study for twelve months. All participants will receive standard care and printed information about healthy lifestyles. Of the 30 participants, 15 will be randomised to receive a coaching intervention for the first 6 months. Health indicators and psychosocial outcomes will be assessed by blinded assessors four times: at the start of the trial, immediately postintervention (6 months after randomisation), and at 3 and 6 months postintervention (9 and 12 months after randomisation, respectively). Predefined success criteria will be used to assess the feasibility of trial processes such as recruitment, attrition, stratification and intervention fidelity. Acceptability and perceived impact of the intervention will be explored qualitatively. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study has been approved by Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital's Research Ethics Board (Ref: 17-752). A knowledge translation planning template will be used to ensure our findings have maximum reach. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT03523806.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the experiences of young people with physical disabilities relating to social inclusion and physical activity, in order to describe the characteristics of social environments that support participation in physical activity. METHOD An iterative, qualitative design employed in-depth, semi-structured interviews with young people with physical disabilities aged 12-18 (n = 11). Data were analyzed using interpretive thematic analysis. RESULTS Young people described several ways that their social environments help motivate and support them in their physical activity participation. These include providing: fair and equitable participation beyond physical accommodations; belonging through teamwork; and socially supported independence. CONCLUSIONS Supportive social environments characterized by equitable participation, a sense of belonging, and opportunities for interdependence, play a critical role in promoting the health and well-being of young people with physical disabilities. These characteristics are important to consider in the design of both integrated and dedicated physical activity programs.

Abstract
Resumo O artigo analisa a abordagem da participação de crianças e adolescentes no campo dos estudos sobre deficiência (Disability Studies). Metodologicamente, conjuga uma revisão bibliográfica a uma análise de conteúdo temática com intuito de analisar quais dimensões da participação são exploradas na literatura. Como resultados, destacam-se quatro temáticas: Esporte, Qualidade de vida/Bem estar, Mensuração da participação e Escola. Conclui-se que há um foco na participação como execução de atividades em um contexto sendo escassas as discussões mais ampliadas sobre o domínio contemplando-o como um valor humano, relacionado à sociabilidade e bases de apoio, gerenciamento de autonomia e níveis de dependência.

Abstract
PURPOSE Children with disabilities are two to three times more likely to become overweight or obese than typically developing children. Children with spina bifida (SB) are at particular risk, yet obesity prevalence and weight management with this population are under-researched. This retrospective chart review explored how weight is assessed and discussed in a children's SB outpatient clinic. METHOD Height/weight data were extracted from records of children aged 2-18 with a diagnosis of SB attending an outpatient clinic at least once between June 2009-2011. Body mass index was calculated and classified using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cut-offs. Notes around weight, diet and physical/sedentary activities were transcribed verbatim and analysed using descriptive thematic analysis. RESULTS Of 180 eligible patients identified, only 63 records had sufficient data to calculate BMI; 15 patients were overweight (23.81%) and 11 obese (17.46%). Weight and physical activity discussions were typically related to function (e.g. mobility, pain). Diet discussions focused on bowel and bladder function and dietary challenges. CONCLUSIONS Anthropometrics were infrequently recorded, leaving an incomplete picture of weight status in children with SB and suggesting that weight is not prioritised. Bowel/bladder function was highlighted over other benefits of a healthy body weight, indicating that health promotion opportunities are being missed. Implications for Rehabilitation It is important to assess, categorise and record anthropometric data for children and youth with spina bifida as they may be at particular risk of excess weight. Information around weight categorisation should be discussed openly and non-judgmentally with children and their families. Health promotion opportunities may be missed by focusing solely on symptom management or function. Healthcare professionals should emphasise the broad benefits of healthy eating and physical activity, offering strategies to enable the child to incorporate healthy lifestyle behaviours appropriate to their level of ability.
