Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between body shape and depressive symptoms has been reported in adults. The present study aimed to investigate the association between body shape-specific abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms among multi-regional Asian adults. METHODS The 2011-2012 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and 2022-2023 Hangzhou study were used as the discovery and validation datasets, respectively. Body shape was assessed by body mass index categories. Abdominal obesity was defined as a body shape index (ABSI) ≥ 75th centile. Depression was measured using 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale short 15-item version, respectively. General linear and multinomial logistic models were used to explore the association of ABSI, abdominal obesity with depressive scores and presence, respectively. RESULTS A total of 12,229 and 1210 participants were included in the discovery and validation datasets, respectively. A non-linear reverse L-shaped association was found between ABSI and depressive scores. Participants with abdominal obesity had higher depressive scores (β = 0.05, 95%CI = 0.01-0.09; and β = 0.13, 95%CI = 0.01-0.24; respectively). Stratified analyses showed that abdominal obesity was associated with higher depressive scores (β = 0.09, 95%CI = 0.00-0.17; and β = 0.25, 95%CI = 0.05-0.46; respectively) and presence (OR = 1.46, 95%CI = 1.02-2.10; and OR = 3.95, 95%CI = 1.58-9.84; respectively) in overweight adults. Furthermore, abdominal obesity was associated with depressive symptoms among overweight females, but not among males. LIMITATION Causal links weren't addressed because of the observational study design. CONCLUSION Abdominal obesity exhibited a positive association with depressive symptoms among Asian overweight adults, particularly in females. Prevention and early diagnosis of depressive symptoms should focus on overweight females.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Studies in recent years have shown that high uric acid causes harm to the human body, which has become a serious public health problem. Elevated serum uric acid has been shown to be associated with obesity, but the relationship between BMI and uric acid (UA) remains controversial. Although the association between BMI and UA has been well studied, the effect of phosphorus levels in vivo on this association remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the relationship between BMI and serum uric acid and the effect of phosphorus on the relationship between the two. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The present study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) continuous 2007-2018 cycle. We included 10786 participants aged 20 years and over. Multivariable linear regression was performed to assess the association between BMI and serum uric acid. phosphorus was stratified into low phosphorus (<3.3 mg/dl), middle phosphorus (3.3-3.9 mg/dl) and high phosphorus (>3.9 mg/dl). Correction of the effect of phosphorus was assessed by testing the interaction between BMI and UA in multivariate linear regression. RESULTS In this cross-sectional study, we found that BMI was positively associated with UA in the female population but not significantly in the male population or in the total population. In multiple regression analysis, UA was 0.51 higher in the highest female BMI group than in the lowest group (p = 0.0001). The relationship between BMI and UA differed significantly by gender under the influence of phosphorus, with men and women in Model II having a greater elevation of UA in men than in women within most groups. (BMI >30, phosphorus >3.9 mg/dl, β:0.83 95% CI: 0.43, 1.23 vs β: 0.79 95% CI: 0.30, 1.29). In addition, phosphorus significantly altered the positive association between BMI and UA in most models. CONCLUSION Our results indicate significant associations between BMI and uric acid in women, with higher BMI values likely to be associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia, suggesting that uric acid levels in obese people should be closely monitored in clinical practice. Phosphorus and BMI have an interactive effect in elevating UA and should be noted as indicators of phosphorus in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-specifically longitudinal associations and potential pathways between serum uric acid (SUA) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) remained unclear. This study aimed to explore SUA trajectories in different age populations and to determine their associations and potential pathways with incident CVD. METHODS This prospective cohort included 41,367 participants from the Kailuan study, including 30,938 participants aged <55 years and 10,419 participants aged ≥55. The SUA trajectories during year 2006-2012 were identified by latent class growth models. RESULTS Three SUA trajectories were identified in the overall, aged <55 and aged ≥55 years participants, as "low-stable" (51.9%, 54.4%, and 43.3%), "moderate-stable" (39.0%, 36.9%, and 45.6%), and "high-stable" (9.1%, 9.7%, and 11.1%), respectively. During a median follow-up of 6.75 years, incident CVD occurred in 2302 participants (5.56%). Overall, a high-stable trajectory was independently associated with a higher risk of CVD (hazard ratio [HR], 1.23; 95% [confidence interval], 1.06-1.42). Notably, the associations differed by age, a significant association was only observed in participants aged ≥55 years (HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.05-1.58), rather than those aged <55 years (HR, 1.08; 95% CI, 0.89-1.33). The addition of SUA trajectories to a baseline risk model for CVD improved the integrated discrimination improvement value (P < 0.05) and category-free net reclassification improvement value (P < 0.05). Bayesian network showed the conditional probability of high CVD risk associated with aging, elevated SUA trajectories, blood pressure, glucose, and inflammation was 15.5%. CONCLUSIONS High-stable SUA trajectories were independently associated with an elevated risk of CVD, which is mainly induced by hypertension, diabetes, and inflammation, especially in participants aged ≥55 years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Limited studies investigated the association between high-level fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution and early-onset diabetes, leaving the possible metabolic mechanisms unclear. We assessed the association of cumulative PM2.5 exposure with diabetes, including early-onset, in high-pollution areas of China and explored whether metabolic factors mediated this association. METHODS 124,204 participants (≥18 years) from 121 counties in Hunan province, China, were enrolled between 2005 and 2020, with follow-up until 2021. The ground-level air pollution concentrations at each participant's residence were calculated using a high-quality dataset in China. The independent association of PM2.5 with incident diabetes and early-onset diabetes was assessed by Cox proportional hazards models. Restricted cubic splines were utilized to establish the exposure-response relationships. The role of metabolism-related mediators was estimated by mediation analysis. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 8.47 (IQR, 6.65-9.82) years, there were 3650 patients with new-onset diabetes. Each 1 μg/m3 increase in the level of cumulative PM2.5 exposure was positively related to an increased incidence of diabetes (HR 1.177, 95 % CI 1.172-1.181) among individuals in the PM2.5 > 50 μg/m3 group after adjusting for multiple variables. The relationship of the PM2.5 dose-response curve for diabetes was non-linear. Significant associations between PM2.5 exposure and early-onset diabetes risk were observed, with this risk showing an increase with the earlier age of early diabetes onset. Males, young individuals (≤45 years), and those with a lower body mass index (BMI <24 kg/m2) appeared to be more susceptible to diabetes. Moreover, change in BMI significantly mediated 31.06 % of the PM2.5-diabetes relationship. CONCLUSIONS Long-term cumulative PM2.5 exposure increased the risk of early-onset diabetes, which is partially mediated by BMI. Sustained air pollution control measures, priority protection of vulnerable individuals, and effective management of BMI should be taken to reduce the burden of diabetes.

Abstract
Background Diabetes is more prevalent among overweight/obese individuals, but has become a significant public health challenge among normal weight populations. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to estimate diabetes/prediabetes incidence and its temporal trends by weight status. Methods PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched until 8 December 2021. Prospective cohort studies reporting diabetes incidence by baseline body mass index (BMI) categories in adults were included. The median year of data collection was used to assess the temporal trends. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were also performed. Results We included 94 studies involving 3.4 million adults from 22 countries. The pooled diabetes incidence in underweight, normal-weight, and overweight/obese adults was 4.5 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.8-7.3), 2.7 (95% CI = 2.2-3.3), and 10.5 (95% CI = 9.3-11.8) per 1000 person-years, respectively. The diabetes incidence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) was higher than in high-income countries among normal-weight (5.8 vs 2.0 per 1000 person-years) or overweight/obese (15.9 vs 8.9 per 1000 person-years) adults. European and American regions had a higher diabetes incidence than the non-Western areas, regardless of weight status. Underweight diabetes incidence decreased significantly from 1995-2000 to 2005-2010. Diabetes incidence in normal-weight populations has increased continuously since 1985 by an estimated 36% every five years. In overweight/obese adults, diabetes incidence increased between 1985-1990 and 1995-2000, stabilised between 2000 and 2010, and spiked suddenly after 2010. Conclusions Diabetes incidence and its temporal trends differed by weight status. The continuous upward trend of diabetes incidence among overweight/obese individuals requires urgent attention, particularly in LMICs. Furthermore, diabetes among normal-weight individuals is becoming a significant public health problem. Registration PROSPERO (CRD42020215957).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purposes of the study were to investigate the detailed association of serum uric acid (SUA) with visceral fat area (VFA) and body fat percentage (BFP) as calculated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and build non-invasive diagnosis models of hyperuricaemia by combining obesity-related indicators, age and sex. METHOD A total of 19 343 adults were included. Multivariable regression analysis models were employed to analyse the association of SUA with VFA and BFP. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated to diagnose hyperuricaemia in adults. RESULTS After fully adjusting for covariates, SUA was positively associated with VFA, BFP and body mass index (BMI) with βs of 0.447, 2.522 and 4.630 (95% CI= (0.412 to 0.482), (2.321 to 2.723) and (4.266 to 4.994)). After stratification by gender, this association persists (p<0.001). Fitted smoothing curves identified non-linear relationships between SUA and both VFA and BMI after full adjustment in males (inflection points: 93.9 cm2 and 30.9 kg/m2). A non-linear relationship also exists between SUA and BFP in females (inflection point: 34.5%). A combined model incorporating BFP, BMI, age and sex exhibited the best ability to diagnose hyperuricaemia (AUC (area under the curve) =0.805, specificity=0.602, sensitivity=0.878). For normal-weight and lean populations, individuals with hyperuricaemia tended to have higher levels of VFA and BFP in females and males, respectively (p<0.001). The combination of VFA, BFP, BMI, age and sex exhibited the best ability to diagnose hyperuricaemia in normal-weight and lean populations (AUC=0.803, specificity=0.671, sensitivity=0.836). CONCLUSION VFA and BFP are independent factors associated with SUA. In males, SUA shows a non-linear relationship with VFA and BMI. In females, SUA and BFP exhibit a non-linear relationship. In normal-weight and lean individuals, the accumulation of VFA and BFP may be involved in hyperuricaemia. VFA and BFP were helpful in diagnosing hyperuricaemia in adults, especially for normal-weight and lean populations.

Abstract
Background The impact of serum uric acid (SUA) trajectories on the development of retinal arteriosclerosis is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to identify adult SUA trajectories by sex and determine their association with risk of retinal arteriosclerosis. Methods In this longitudinal study, 4,324 participants who were aged between 18 and 60 years without retinal arteriosclerosis at or before baseline (from January 1, 2010, through December 31, 2010) were included. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify SUA trajectories during the exposure period (from January 1, 2006, through December 31, 2010). Cox proportional-hazards models were applied to evaluate the associations between SUA trajectories and the risk of incident retinal arteriosclerosis during the outcome period (from January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2019). Results 4 distinct SUA trajectories were identified in both women and men: low, moderate, moderate-high, and high. During a median follow-up of 9.54 years (IQR 9.53-9.56), 97 women and 295 men had developed retinal arteriosclerosis. In the fully adjusted model, a significant association between the moderate-high SUA trajectory group and incidence of retinal arteriosclerosis was observed only in men (HR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.17-2.65) compared with the low trajectory group, but not in women (HR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.39-1.52). Also, the high SUA trajectory group had the highest risk with an adjusted HR of 1.81 (95% CI, 1.04-3.17) in men. However, they did not exhibit a substantially increased risk in women. Conclusion Higher SUA trajectory groups were significantly associated with an increased risk of incident retinal arteriosclerosis in men but not in women.

Abstract
Background Long-term patterns of serum uric acid (SUA) and their association with the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and mortality are poorly characterized as prior studies measured SUA at a single time point. This study aimed to identify SUA trajectories and determine their associations with incident MI and all-cause mortality. Methods We included 85,503 participants who were free of MI in or prior 2012 from the Kailuan study. SUA trajectories during 2006–2012 were identified by group-based trajectory modeling. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the association of SUA trajectories with MI and all-cause mortality. Results We identified three SUA trajectories during 2006–2012: low-stable (n=44,124, mean SUA: 236–249 μmol/L), moderate-stable (n=34,431, mean SUA: 324–354 μmol/L) and high-stable (n=6,984, mean SUA: 425–463 μmol/L). During a median follow-up of 6.8 years, we documented 817 (0.96%) incident MI and 6498 (7.60%) mortality. Compared with the low-stable group, high-stable group experienced a higher risk of MI (hazard ratio [HR], 1.35; 95% confidence [CI], 1.07–1.71) and all-cause mortality (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.12–1.33). Multiple sensitivity analyses yielded similar results. Additionally, the association of SUA trajectory with MI and all-cause mortality was more pronounced in individuals without a history of hypertension (P-interaction=0.0359) and those aged <60 years (P-interaction<0.0001), respectively. Conclusions Higher SUA trajectories were associated with altered risk of MI and all-cause mortality, suggesting that monitoring SUA trajectory may assist in identifying subpopulations at higher risk of MI and all-cause mortality. Abstract
Objective This study aimed to decipher the association between serum uric acid (UA) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in the population from the southern region of Saudi Arabia. Method In this retrospective cross-sectional investigation, clinical data obtained from the different commercial laboratories in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia were screened over 2 years. Data were analyzed using standard statistical methods. Results A total of 1984 laboratory investigations with 1215 females (61.2%) and 769 males (38.6%) were included in the data analysis. In our investigation, the prevalence of hyperuricemia in the study population was 53.5% (41.2% females and 12.3% males) and in the diabetic population was 12.7% (9.47% females and 3.23% males), in prediabetics was 12.65% (9.8% females and 2.85% males), respectively. Prediabetic subjects had higher UA levels than people with diabetes or healthy people. Higher UA quartiles were associated with a high level of urea, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) creatinine, HbA1c, fasting blood sugar (FBS), and total cholesterol (TC) (P < 0.05). High UA (OR = 1.33 for diabetes; OR = 2.676 for prediabetes), high BUN (OR = 3.05 for diabetes; OR = 2.293 for prediabetes), high TC (OR = 3.75 for diabetes; OR = 1.098 for prediabetes), and high TG (OR = 2.67 for diabetes; OR = 1.943 for prediabetes) parameters are the most influential risk factor in diabetic and prediabetic patients than the people who have normal UA, BUN, TC, and TG value. Conclusion High UA levels are significantly associated with prediabetes as defined by HbA1c criteria, indicating that UA has a significant role in the disturbance of glucose metabolism. A significant positive association was observed between dyslipidemia and serum UA in the study population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a serious worldwide public health problem, especially for people with mental disorders. AIM To explore the related factors of obesity by analyzing the metabolic indexes of patients with common mental disorders in stable stage. METHODS Five hundred seventy-six subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) or schizophrenia (SCZ) were included, who received fixed drug dose and routine drug treatment for 2 years or more. Their venous blood was collected, and the blood metabolic indexes were analyzed. RESULTS BD and SCZ are more prone to obesity than MDD. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the value of BMI increased with the increase of age(B = 0.084, p < 0.001), TG(B = 0.355, p = 0.024), LDL(B = 0.697, p < 0.001), LDH(B = 0.011, p = 0.002), SCr(B = 0.051, p < 0.001), UA(B = 0.014, p < 0.001), HbA1c(B = 0.702, p = 0.004) and hsCRP(B = 0.101, p < 0.001). And It decreased with the increase of HDL(B = -1.493, p < 0.001). DISCUSSION People with mental disorders should regularly check blood indicators and strengthen weight management to reduce the risk of obesity and promote their health.
