EQCM study of the ion exchange behaviour of polypyrrole with different counterions in different electrolytes

Redox-Active Organic Materials: From Energy Storage to Redox Catalysis

Electroactive materials are central to myriad applications, including energy storage, sensing, and catalysis. Compared to traditional inorganic electrode materials, redox-active organic materials such as porous organic polymers (POPs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging as promising alternatives due to their structural tunability, flexibility, sustainability, and compatibility with a range of electrolytes. Herein, we discuss the challenges and opportunities available for the use of redox-active organic materials in organoelectrochemistry, an emerging area in fine chemical synthesis. In particular, we highlight the utility of organic electrode materials in photoredox catalysis, electrochemical energy storage, and electrocatalysis and point to new directions needed to unlock their potential utility for organic synthesis. This Perspective aims to bring together the organic, electrochemistry, and polymer communities to design new heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the sustainable synthesis of complex molecules.

A nanoporous gold film sensor modified with polypyrrole/CuO nanocomposite for electrochemical determination of piroxicam and tramadole

In this paper, an electrochemical sensor was developed to determine piroxicam (PX) and tramadole (Tr) based on their enhanced electrochemical responses at the surface of the polypyrrole/CuO nanocomposite-modified nanoporous gold film (NPGF) electrode. The experimental results showed that PX provide an oxidation peak at 0.65 V in pH = 8.0. The DPV results were linearly affiliated on PX concentration within the two closed windows (C1_PX = 0.05-30.0 μM, correlation coefficient of 0.9905, and C2_PX = 50.0-300.0 μM, correlation coefficient of 0.9927). From voltammetric curves, the detection limit (LOD = 3S_b/m) for PX at a surface of PPY-CuO-NPGF electrode was appeared to be 0.01 μM. Furthermore, the ability of PPY-CuO-NPGF electrode for simultaneous measurement of PX and Tr was investigated. The suggested sensor shows a long-time stability, good repeatability, and rapid response in the mixture media of PX and Tr.

Insight into the ion exchange in the adsorptive removal of fluoride by doped polypyrrole from water

In this study, the polypyrrole (PPy) samples doped with Cl^- (PPy-Cl), SO₄^2- (PPy-SO4) and SO₄^2-+Cl^- (PPy-SO4+Cl) were synthesized by chemical polymerization for the adsorptive removal of fluoride ion from water. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared PPy samples were characterized by FT-IR, BET, SEM, XPS, and zeta potential. The adsorption experiments revealed that the PPy-Cl exhibited faster kinetics and higher adsorption capacity (13.98 mg/g), more than 4 times that of PPy-SO4 (3.08 mg/g) and PPy-SO4+Cl (3.17 mg/g). The kinetics of the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherm data fitted well to the Langmuir model. FT-IR, EDX, and XPS tests for PPy samples before and after fluoride adsorption demonstrated that anion exchange between F^- and Cl^- or SO4^2- was the prior mechanism for fluoride ion removal from water. Cl^- was more favorable than SO₄^2- in the ion exchange with F^-. Meanwhile, the Cl^- or SO₄^2- exchanged with F^- was mainly bound to the active nitrogen that accounts for 6% of the total nitrogen in PPy molecular matrix. Further study of zeta potential and pH influence experiment demonstrated the electrostatic interaction is auxiliary interaction for the fluoride removal by doped PPy samples.

Current-Driven Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Monitoring Cell Layer Integrity with Enhanced Sensitivity

In this progress report an overview is given on the use of the organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) as a biosensor for impedance sensing of cell layers. The transient OECT current can be used to detect changes in the impedance of the cell layer, as shown by Jimison et al. To circumvent the application of a high gate bias and preventing electrolysis of the electrolyte, in case of small impedance variations, an alternative measuring technique based on an OECT in a current-driven configuration is developed. The ion-sensitivity is larger than 1200 mV V^-1 dec^-1 at low operating voltage. It can be even further enhanced using an OECT based complementary amplifier, which consists of a p-type and an n-type OECT connected in series, as known from digital electronics. The monitoring of cell layer integrity and irreversible disruption of barrier function with the current-driven OECT is demonstrated for an epithelial Caco-2 cell layer, showing the enhanced ion-sensitivity as compared to the standard OECT configuration. As a state-of-the-art application of the current-driven OECT, the in situ monitoring of reversible tight junction modulation under the effect of drug additives, like poly-l-lysine, is discussed. This shows its potential for in vitro and even in vivo toxicological and drug delivery studies.

Datasets of EQCM-controlled deposition and cycling of thin polypyrrole films in acetonitrile electrolyte solution

The paper presents three datasets obtained by electrochemical quartz microbalance technique which was applied to studies of conducting polymer film in contact with non-aqueous electrolyte solution. The first dataset describes the calibration procedure of gold-coated quartz crystal, immersed in acetonitrile silver ion-containing electrolyte, by means of silver layer electrodeposition. On the basis of experimentally measured dependence of the resonance frequency on the varying electrode mass in the course of electrochemical silver deposition/dissolution, the calibration coefficient was found to be equal to 13.6 ng/Hz. The second dataset has been collected when thus calibrated EQCM cell was used for determination of the mass change due to the polypyrrole film growth during anodic oxidation of pyrrole monomer from its acetonitrile solution. Its treatment reveals the proportionality between the mass change and the charge spent for pyrrole electrooxidation, the proportionality coefficient being 53.5 g per mole of electrons. The third dataset contains EQCM measurement data during repetitive charge-discharge treatment of the deposited polypyrrole film (cyclic voltammetry, CV) in monomer-free electrolyte. Collected data shows that continuous cycling of the polymer film leads to progressive increase of the cation-exchange contribution to the total ion flux which maintains the film's electroneutrality during variation of its redox state. These findings might be useful both for a qualitative consideration of the cycling stability of polypyrrole in non-aqueous medium and for a quantitative mathematical modelling of polypyrrole electropolymerization and its redox transformations.

A Universal Electrolyte Formulation for the Electrodeposition of Pristine Carbon and Polypyrrole Composites for Supercapacitors

Electrodeposition of conducting polymer-carbon composites from an electrolyte precursor solution is a facile one-step approach to fabricate device-ready electrodes for energy storage. A key challenge in this approach is the dispersion of the carbon nanomaterials with the aqueous precursor solution with previous approaches either heavily oxidizing the carbon nanomaterials or using high concentrations of anionic surfactants as dopants. However, the former reduces the electrical conductivity of carbon, while the latter reduces the ionic mobility of the conducting polymer due to the large anion size. Herein, for the first time we present a quaternary electrolyte formulation for the fabrication of pristine carbon and polypyrrole (PPy) composites that does not sacrifice either electron or ion mobility. The electrolyte uses lithium perchlorate (20 mM) as a supporting electrolyte and dopant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate at a very low concentration (1.43 mM) as a surfactant, together with pristine carbon nanomaterials and pyrrole monomers. The order of magnitude difference between the concentration of the dopant and surfactant ion allows the as-deposited PPy to be doped predominantly by small-sized and mobile perchlorate anions. Composites of PPy with carbon black, carbon nanotubes, and electrochemical exfoliated graphene (EEG) have been successfully prepared using this new quaternary electrolyte. The as-fabricated PPy/EEG composite electrodes showed a specific capacitance of 348.8 F g^-1 with a high rate capability (190.7 F g^-1 at 71 A g^-1). Supercapacitor devices based on the PPy/EEG composite electrodes exhibit a high rate behavior up to 500 mV s^-1 and a long cycle life of 5000 cycles.

The Electrochemical Oxidation of Hydroquinone and Catechol through a Novel Poly-geminal Dicationic Ionic Liquid (PGDIL)-TiO2 Composite Film Electrode

A novel poly-geminal dicationic ionic liquid (PGDIL)-TiO₂/Au composite film electrode was successfully prepared by electrochemical polymerization of 1,4-bis(3-(m-aminobenzyl)imidazol-1-yl)butane bis(hexafluorinephosphate) containing polymerizable anilino groups in the electrolyte containing nano-TiO₂. The basic properties of PGDIL-TiO₂/Au composite films were studied by SEM, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse voltammetry. The SEM results revealed that the PGDIL-TiO₂ powder has a more uniform and smaller particle size than the PGDIL. The cyclic voltammetry results showed that the catalytic effect on electrochemical oxidation of hydroquinone and catechol of the PGDIL-TiO₂ electrode is the best, yet the R_ct of PGDIL-TiO₂ electrode is higher than that of PGDIL and TiO₂ electrode, which is caused by the synergistic effect between TiO₂ and PGDIL. The PGDIL-TiO₂/Au composite electrode presents a good enhancement effect on the reversible electrochemical oxidation of hydroquinone and catechol, and differential pulse voltammetry tests of the hydroquinone and catechol in a certain concentration range revealed that the PGDIL-TiO₂/Au electrode enables a high sensitivity to the differentiation and detection of hydroquinone and catechol. Furthermore, the electrochemical catalytic mechanism of the PGDIL-TiO₂/Au electrode was studied. It was found that the recombination of TiO₂ improved the reversibility and activity of the PGDIL-TiO₂/Au electrode for the electrocatalytic reaction of HQ and CC. The PGDIL-TiO₂/Au electrode is also expected to be used for catalytic oxidation and detection of other organic pollutants containing -OH groups.

Fullerene Active Layers for n-Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are currently being developed for applications ranging from bioelectronics to neuromorphic computing. We show that fullerene derivatives with glycolated side chains can serve as n-type active layers for OECTs with figures of merit exceeding the best reported conjugated-polymer-based n-type OECTs. By comparing two different fullerene derivatives, [6,6]-phenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and 2-(2,3,4-tris(methoxtriglycol) phenyl) [60]fulleropyrrolidine (C60-TEG), we find that the hydrophilic glycolated side chains in C60-TEG enable volumetric doping of C60-TEG films. In contrast, the hydrophobic nature of PCBM prevents ions from penetrating into the material. Our results demonstrate that small-molecule semiconductors follow many of the same design principles established for conjugated polymers and can function as high-performing mixed electronic/ionic conductors for efficient, fast OECTs.

Thin Functional Polymer Films by Electropolymerization

Intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) have been widely utilized in organic electronics, actuators, electrochromic devices, and sensors. Many potential applications demand the formation of thin polymer films, which can be generated by electrochemical polymerization. Electrochemical methods are quite powerful and versatile and can be utilized for investigation of ICPs, both for educational purposes and materials chemistry research. In this study, we show that potentiodynamic and potentiostatic techniques can be utilized for generating and characterizing thin polymer films under the context of educational chemistry research and state-of-the-art polymer research. First, two well-known bifunctional monomers (with only two linking sites)-aniline and bithiophene-and their respective ICPs-polyaniline (PANI) and polybithiophene (PBTh)-were electrochemically generated and characterized. Tests with simple electrochromic devices based on PANI and PBTh were carried out at different doping levels, where changes in the UV-VIS absorption spectra and color were ascribed to changes in the polymer structures. These experiments may attract students' interest in the electrochemical polymerization of ICPs as doping/dedoping processes can be easily understood from observable color changes to the naked eye, as shown for the two polymers. Second, two new carbazole-based multifunctional monomers (with three or more linking sites)-tris(4-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)silanol (TPTCzSiOH) and tris(3,5-di(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)silanol (TPHxCzSiOH)-were synthesized to produce thin films of cross-linked polymer networks by electropolymerization. These thin polymer films were characterized by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) experiments and nitrogen sorption, and the results showed a microporous nature with high specific surface areas up to 930 m²g^-1. PTPHxCzSiOH-modified glassy carbon electrodes showed an enhanced electrochemical response to nitrobenzene as prototypical nitroaromatic compound compared to unmodified glassy carbon electrodes.

Ion Electron-Coupled Functionality in Materials and Devices Based on Conjugated Polymers

The coupling between charge accumulation in a conjugated polymer and the ionic charge compensation, provided from an electrolyte, defines the mode of operation in a vast array of different organic electrochemical devices. The most explored mixed organic ion-electron conductor, serving as the active electrode in these devices, is poly(3,4-ethyelenedioxythiophene) doped with polystyrelensulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). In this progress report, scientists of the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University review some of the achievements derived over the last two decades in the field of organic electrochemical devices, in particular including PEDOT:PSS as the active material. The recently established understanding of the volumetric capacitance and the mixed ion-electron charge transport properties of PEDOT are described along with examples of various devices and phenomena utilizing this ion-electron coupling, such as the organic electrochemical transistor, ionic-electronic thermodiffusion, electrochromic devices, surface switches, and more. One of the pioneers in this exciting research field is Prof. Olle Inganäs and the authors of this progress report wish to celebrate and acknowledge all the fantastic achievements and inspiration accomplished by Prof. Inganäs all since 1981.

Nanostructured Conducting polymer (CP) actuators are promising materials for biomedical applications such as drug release systems. However, understanding the actuation behavior at the nano-scale has not yet been explored. In this work, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and poly(pyrrole) (PPy) nanotubes doped with a large counter ion (i.e. poly(styrene sodium sulfonate) (PSS)) were fabricated using electrochemical deposition of PEDOT and PPy around poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) nanofiber templates, followed by template removal in chloroform. The actuation and mass transport behavior of PPy and PEDOT nanotubes were investigated and compared. The nanotubes were subjected to a redox process using cyclic voltammetry in 0.1M NaPSS electrolyte solution as the potential swept between -0.8 V and +0.4 V for 20 cycles at 10, 50, 100, and 200 mV/s scan rates. The mass transport behavior of these nanotubes was characterized via electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) technique. The EQCM results showed that PEDOT nanotubes had a higher mass exchange capability than their PPy counterparts, especially at higher scan rates. Also, it was revealed that PPy nanotubes were more sensitive to the scan rate than the PEDOT nanotubes, and the maximum mass exchange capability of the PPy nanotubes was noticeably reduced by increasing the scan rate.

The feasibility and application of PPy in cathodic polarization antifouling

Cathodic polarization antifouling deserves attention because of its environmentally friendly nature and good sustainability. It has been proven that cathodic voltages applied on metal substrates exhibit outstanding antifouling effects. However, most metals immersed in marine environment are protected by insulated anticorrosive coatings, restricting the cathodic polarization applied on metals. This study developed a conducting polypyrrole (PPy)/acrylic resin coating (σ = 0.18 Scm^-1), which can be applied in cathodic polarization antifouling. The good stability and electro-activity of PPy in the negative polarity zone in alkalescent NaCl solution were verified by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), chronoamperometry (CA), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), demonstrating the feasibility of PPy as cathodic polarization material. Furthermore, the antifouling effects of PPy/acrylicresin coating on 24-h old Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli) which formed on PPy/acrylic resin-coated plastic plate were measured under different cathodic potentials and treatment time, characterized by fluorescent microscope. The results suggest that at cathodic potential around -0.5 V (vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)), there was little trace of attached bacteria on the substrate after 20 min of treatment. PPy/acrylicresin-coated substrates were also subjected to repeated cycles of biofilm formation and electrochemical removal, where high removal efficiencies were maintained throughout the total polarization process. Under these conditions, the generation of hydrogen peroxide is believed to be responsible for the antifouling effects because of causing oxidative damage to cells, suggesting the potential of the proposed technology for application on insulated surfaces in various industrial settings.

The effect of anions on the electrochemical properties of polyaniline for supercapacitors

To investigate the effect of anions on the electrochemical properties of polyaniline (PANI) for supercapacitors, electrochemical performance tests of PANI with different dopant anions were carried out in the corresponding acid solutions by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) methods. In particular, ionic fluxes and solvent molecules involved in redox processes can be analyzed by the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) technique and discriminated by simultaneously recording cyclic voltammograms and mass changes during redox switching. The emeraldine base (EB) form of PANI prepared in a protonic acid with bigger anions can be easily doped by a protonic acid with smaller anions, and conversely, PANI-EB is hard to be doped. The anodic reversal potential of potentiodynamic cycling heavily influences the electrochemical stability of PANI. High anodic potentials result in PANI degradation. Its supercapacitive properties including specific capacitance, power density and cycling stability are strongly dependent upon the type of dopant anion. PANI with the dopant anions of oxalic acid has the highest specific capacitance and the best cycling stability among the used acids. The diffusion coefficient of anions plays a key role in determining power density. PANI films with organic dopant anions exhibit better cycling stability than their inorganic counterparts. It is believed that the hydrolysis of PANI facilitated by the additional water molecules accompanied by dopant anions into and out of the PANI matrix is a key factor responsible for the cycling instability.

Rapid, all dry microfabrication of three-dimensional Co3O4/Pt nanonetworks for high-performance microsupercapacitors

On-chip electrochemical energy storage devices have attracted growing attention due to the decreasing size of electronic devices. Various approaches have been applied for constructing the microsupercapacitors. However, the microfabrication of high-performance microsupercapacitors by conventional and fully compatible semiconductor microfabrication technologies is still a critical challenge. Herein, unique three-dimensional (3D) Co₃O₄ nanonetwork microelectrodes formed by the interconnection of Co₃O₄ nanosheets are constructed by controllable physical vapor deposition combined with rapid thermal annealing. This construction process is an all dry and rapid (≤5 minutes) procedure. Afterward, by sputtering highly electrically conductive Pt nanoparticles on the microelectrodes, the 3D Co₃O₄/Pt nanonetworks based microsupercapacitor is fabricated, showing a high volume capacitance (35.7 F cm^-3) at a scan rate of 20 mV s^-1 due to the unique interconnected structures, high electrical conductivity and high surface area of the microelectrodes. This microfabrication process is also used to construct high-performance flexible microsupercapacitors, and it can be applied in the construction of wearable devices. The proposed strategy is completely compatible with the current semiconductor microfabrication and shows great potential in the applications of the large-scale integration of micro/nano and wearable devices.

Polypyrrole capacitance characteristics with different doping ions and thicknesses

A simple model was suggested for explaining the relation between the electrochemical properties and thickness of the PPy films which were doped by Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻ and 4-toluene sulfonic ions, respectively.

Organic Bioelectronics: Bridging the Signaling Gap between Biology and Technology

The electronics surrounding us in our daily lives rely almost exclusively on electrons as the dominant charge carrier. In stark contrast, biological systems rarely use electrons but rather use ions and molecules of varying size. Due to the unique combination of both electronic and ionic/molecular conductivity in conducting and semiconducting organic polymers and small molecules, these materials have emerged in recent decades as excellent tools for translating signals between these two realms and, therefore, providing a means to effectively interface biology with conventional electronics-thus, the field of organic bioelectronics. Today, organic bioelectronics defines a generic platform with unprecedented biological recording and regulation tools and is maturing toward applications ranging from life sciences to the clinic. In this Review, we introduce the field, from its early breakthroughs to its current results and future challenges.

Specific Surface versus Electrochemically Active Area of the Carbon/Polypyrrole Capacitor: Correlation of Ion Dynamics Studied by an Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance with BET Surface

Carbon/polypyrrole (PPy) composites are promising electrode materials for energy storage applications such as lightweight capacitors. Although these materials are composed of relatively inexpensive components, there is a gap of knowledge regarding the correlation between surface, porosity, ion exchange dynamics, and the interplay of the double layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance. In this work we evaluate the specific surface area analyzed by the BET method and the area accessible for ions using electrochemical quartz-crystal microbalance (EQCM) for SWCNT/PPy and carbon black Vulcan XC72-R/PPy composites. The study revealed that the polymer has significant influence on the pore size of the composites. Although the BET surface is low for the polypyrrole, the electrode mass change and thus the electrochemical area are large for the polymer-containing electrodes. This indicates that multiple redox active centers in the charged polymer chain are good ion scavengers. Also, for the composite electrodes, the effective charge storage occurs at the polypyrrole-carbon junctions, which are easy to design/multiply by a proper carbon-to-polymer weight ratio. The specific BET surface and electrochemically accessible surface area are both important parameters in calculation of the electrode capacitance. SWCNTs/PPy showed the highest capacitances normalized to the BET and electrochemical surface as compared to the polymer-carbon black. TEM imaging revealed very homogeneous distribution of the nanosized polymer particles onto the CNTs, which facilitates the synergistic effect of the double layer capacitance (CNTs) and pseudocapacitance (polymer). The trend in the electrode mass change in correlation with the capacitance suggest additional effects such as a solvent co-insertion into the polymer and the contribution of the charge associated with the redox activity of oxygen-containing functional groups on the carbon surface.

Facile preparation of electroactive amorphous α-ZrP/PANI hybrid film for potential-triggered adsorption of Pb(2+) ions

An electroactive hybrid film composed of amorphous α-zirconium phosphate and polyaniline (α-ZrP/PANI) is controllably synthesized on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified Au electrodes in aqueous solution by cyclic voltammetry method. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray power diffraction (XRD) analysis are applied for the evaluation of the synthesis process. It is found that the exfoliated amorphous α-ZrP nanosheets are well dispersed in PANI and the hydrolysis of α-ZrP is successfully suppressed by controlling the exfoliation temperature and adding appropriate supporting electrolyte. The insertion/release of heavy metals into/from the film is reversibly controlled by a potential-triggered mechanism. Herein, α-ZrP, a weak solid acid, can provide an acidic micro-environment for PANI to promote the electroactivity in neutral aqueous solutions. Especially, the hybrid film shows excellent potential-triggered adsorption of Pb(2+) ion due to the selective complexation of Pb(2+) ion with oxygen derived from P-O-H of α-ZrP. Also, it shows long-term cycle stability and rapid potential-responsive adsorption/desorption rate. This kind of novel hybrid film is expected to be a promising potential-triggered ESIX material for separation and recovery of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Tungsten oxide@polypyrrole core-shell nanowire arrays as novel negative electrodes for asymmetric supercapacitors

Among active pseudocapacitive materials, polypyrrole (PPy) is a promising electrode material in electrochemical capacitors. PPy-based materials research has thus far focused on its electrochemical performance as a positive electrode rather than as a negative electrode for asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). Here high-performance electrochemical supercapacitors are designed with tungsten oxide@PPy (WO3 @PPy) core-shell nanowire arrays and Co(OH)2 nanowires grown on carbon fibers. The WO3 @PPy core-shell nanowire electrode exhibits a high capacitance (253 mF/cm2) in negative potentials (-1.0-0.0 V). The ASCs packaged with CF-Co(OH)2 as a positive electrode and CF-WO3 @PPy as a negative electrode display a high volumetric capacitance up to 2.865 F/cm3 based on volume of the device, an energy density of 1.02 mWh/cm3 , and very good stability performance. These findings promote the application of PPy-based nanostructures as advanced negative electrodes for ASCs.
