From e-waste to living space: Flame retardants contaminating household items add to concern about plastic recycling

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are commonly used in electric and electronic products in high concentrations to prevent or retard fire. Health concerns related to flame retardants (FRs) include carcinogenicity, endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and reproductive and developmental toxicity. Globally, a lack of transparency related to chemicals in products and limited restrictions on use of FRs in electronics have led to widespread use and dissemination of harmful FRs. Despite the lack of transparency and restrictions, plastics from electronics are often recycled and can be incorporated in household items that do not require flame retardancy, resulting in potentially high and unnecessary exposure. This study sought to determine whether black plastic household products sold on the U.S. market contained emerging and phased-out FRs and whether polymer type was predictive of contamination. A total of 203 products were screened for bromine (Br), and products containing >50 ppm Br were analyzed for BFRs, OPFRs, and plastic polymers (e.g. acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, high impact polystyrene, polypropylene). FRs were found in 85% of analyzed products, with total FR concentrations ranging up to 22,800 mg/kg. FRs detected include the restricted compound deca-BDE, which was used widely in electronics casings, as well as its replacements decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 2,4,6-Tris(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine (TBPP-TAZ) along with associated compound 2,4,6-tribromophenol (2,4,6-TBP), recently detected in breast milk. Plastic typically used in electronics (styrene-based) contained significantly higher levels of ∑FRs than plastics less typically used for electronics (polypropylene and nylon). Estimation of exposure to BDE-209 from contaminated kitchen utensils indicated users would have a median intake of 34,700 ng/day, exceeding estimates for intake from dust and diet. The detection of FRs in collected household products indicates that recycling, without the necessary transparency and restrictions to ensure safety, is resulting in unexpected exposure to toxic flame retardants in household items.

Trophic transfer of dechloranes in marine food webs in Dalian Bay, China

Dechloranes, including dechlorane 602 (Dec 602), dechlorane 603 (Dec 603), dechlorane 604 (Dec 604), dechlorane plus (DP, including syn- and anti-DP) and mirex, were determined in marine food web from Dalian Bay, Northeast China to investigate their occurrence andtrophic transfer. In all organisms, the detection rates were Dec 602 (99%) > mirex (95%) > Dec 603 (92%) > anti-DP (91%) > syn-DP (82%) > Dec 604 (9.6%). The concentrations were 0.92-16 ng/g lipid weight (lw) for mirex, 0.53-2.3 ng/g lw for syn-DP, 1.1-4.5 ng/g lw for anti-DP, 0.19-5.0 ng/g lw for Dec 602, 0.26-1.9 ng/g lw for Dec 603 and 0.020-0.33 ng/g lw for Dec 604. Significant positive relationships (p < 0.0001) were observed between lipid normalized concentrations and trophic levels for mirex (R2 = 0.80) and Dec602 (R2 = 0.82) in food webs, with the calculated TMFs values of 3.09 and 3.39, respectively, indicating the trophic magnification potential of these compounds. For syn-DP, anti-DP, Dec 603 and Dec 604, the similar significant relationships were not found, suggesting that these chemicals do not trophic magnification nor trophic dilution in the food web. With low log KOW values for mirex (7.01) and Dec 602 (8.05), these two compounds have the highest magnifications potentials, while the magnification potential of Dec 603, Dec 604 and DP dramatically decreased because of their extremely big log KOW values (higher than 10). The observed fractional abundance of anti-DP (fanti) ranged of 0.58-0.69, closing to the one in Chinese industrial products, indicating DP isomers had not undergone significant differences of physicochemical or biological process in the studied food web.

Occurrence, composition, and spatial distribution of dechlorane plus in surface sediments of black-odorous urban rivers across China

China, one of the two dechlorane plus (DP) producers, might have become a major area of DP pollution. The environmental contamination status of DP in sediments across the whole of China has not yet been studied. In the current study, the pollution levels, spatial distribution, and compositions of DP were investigated comprehensively in surface sediments from 173 black-odorous urban rivers across China for the first time. Total DP concentrations varied from not-detected to 39.71 ng/g dw, with an average concentration of 3.20 ± 4.74 ng/g dw, which was polluted by local emission sources and presented significant differences among different sampling cities. Among the seven administrative regions of China, DP concentrations were the highest in South China and showed a decreasing trend from southeastern coastal areas to northwest inland regions. Spearman's correlation analysis suggested that the gross industrial output, gross domestic product, and daily wastewater treatment capacity were not the principal factors controlling the spatial distribution of DP. The fanti values (the concentration ratios of anti-DP to the sum of anti-DP and syn-DP) varied from 0.19 to 0.88, with those in most sediments falling in the range of DP technical product (0.60 ~ 0.80), suggesting no apparent stereoselective enrichment occurred. Moreover, the anti-Cl11-DP was detected in sediments (n.d. ~ 0.40 ng/g dw), which showed significantly and insignificantly positive correlation with the anti-DP levels and fanti, respectively, implying it might mainly originate from the byproduct of DP technical product rather than the dechlorination of anti-DP.

Dechlorane Plus in environmental samples and human serum samples from new and old electronic waste dismantling areas in East China: Levels, composition profiles, and human exposure

The global presence of Dechlorane Plus (DP) in environmental and human samples highlights the need for further research into its ecological risks and health effects. This study determined DP concentrations in soil and air samples from an old electronic waste dismantling area (Fengjiang) and a new electronic waste dismantling area (Binhai) in Taizhou City, China. Both syn-DP and anti-DP isomers were found in all soil and air samples. The median concentrations of DP in soil and air were 90.5 ng/g and 48.4 pg/m3 in Fengjiang, and 6.69 ng/g and 28.8 pg/m3 in Binhai. DP were widespread in the local environment, and in general at moderate levels compared with reports from other electronic waste dismantling areas. The analysis of DP isomer profiles in different seasons and the calculation of related fugacity fraction showed that anti-DP perhaps easier than syn-DP to migrate from soil to air in summer. DP concentrations in serum of residents from Fengjiang (median 9.74 ng/g) were significantly higher than those from Huangyan (common control area, median 2.77 ng/g; p < 0.01), while the fanti value showed that Fengjiang was significantly lower than Huangyan (p < 0.05). This revealed that DP exposure levels in serum perhaps one of the crucial factors influencing fanti value. Moreover, DP concentrations in serum showed an increasing trend with increasing body mass index (BMI) or age. However, the relationship between DP and sex was not observed. The fanti values of serum samples were higher than those in soil and air samples, suggested that DP perhaps stereo-selectively absorbed into the body or stereo-selectively metabolised.

Brominated flame retardants in breast milk from the United States: First detection of bromophenols in U.S. breast milk

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are a class of compounds with many persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative members. BFRs have been widely detected in breast milk, posing health risks for breastfeeding infants. Ten years after the phaseout of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the United States, we analyzed breast milk from 50 U.S. mothers for a suite of BFRs to assess current exposures to BFRs and the impact of changing use patterns on levels of PBDEs and current-use compounds in breast milk. Compounds analyzed included 37 PBDEs, 18 bromophenols, and 11 other BFRs. A total of 25 BFRs were detected, including 9 PBDEs, 8 bromophenols, and 8 other BFRs. PBDEs were found in every sample but at concentrations considerably lower than in previous North American samples, with a median ∑PBDE concentration (sum of 9 detected PBDEs) of 15.0 ng/g lipid (range 1.46-1170 ng/g lipid). Analysis of time trends in PBDE concentrations in North American breast milk indicated a significant decline since 2002, with a halving time for ∑PBDE concentrations of 12.2 years; comparison with previous samples from the northwest U.S region showed a 70% decline in median levels. Bromophenols were detected in 88% of samples with a median ∑12bromophenol concentration (sum of 12 detected bromophenols) of 0.996 ng/g lipid and reaching up to 71.1 ng/g lipid. Other BFRs were infrequently detected but concentrations reached up to 278 ng/g lipid. These results represent the first measurement of bromophenols and other replacement flame retardants in breast milk from U.S. mothers. In addition, these results provide data on current PBDE contamination in human milk, as PBDEs were last measured in U.S. breast milk ten years ago. The presence of phased-out PBDEs, bromophenols, and other current-use flame retardants in breast milk reflects ongoing prenatal exposure and increased risk for adverse impacts on infant development.

Occurrence and tissue-specific partitioning of alternative brominated flame retardants in northwest Atlantic harbor seal pups (Phoca vitulina vitulina)

Brominated flame retardants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used for decades until evidence of negative health effects led to bans in many countries. PBDEs have since been replaced by alternative legacy compounds or newly developed chemicals. In this study, eight alternative brominated flame retardants were analyzed in blubber and liver of harbor seal pups (≤6 months) from the Northwest Atlantic collected during 2001-2010 to elucidate concentrations, patterns, contamination trends, potential maternal transfer, and tissue partitioning. All compounds were detected in liver and blubber tissues with hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) isomers and 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (TBB) predominating. Overall, α-HBCD was the dominant HBCD isomer in both tissues although the concentrations of γ-HBCD exceeded those of α-HBCD in seven pups, indicating their mothers may have had alternative dietary patterns or recent exposure to the commercial mixture. Although it was detected in less than half of the samples, to our knowledge, this is the first study to report tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) concentrations in multiple tissues of a top marine predator. For the brominated components of Firemaster® flame retardants, TBB concentrations exceeded bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH). This pattern may result from recent exposure to commercial mixtures in which TBB exceeds TBPH 4:1 or from differences in perinatal or lactational transfer efficiency of the two compounds. Between the two tissues, lipid-normalized β-HBCD, γ-HBCD, TBB and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) concentrations were significantly higher in liver than blubber. This indicates that the bioaccumulation of these chemicals is not simply related to lipid dynamics but may be linked to blood proteins. This study demonstrates that harbor seal pups from this region are contaminated with alternative flame retardants passed to them via placental or lactational transfer. Given the evidence for negative health effects of these chemicals, this contamination adds additional pressure on the first year survival of these young, developing animals.

Legacy and emerging flame retardants in sharks from the Western North Atlantic Ocean

Following the discontinuation of commercial polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) mixtures, a variety of alternative flame retardants (FRs) have been developed and employed. To understand the contamination status of these emerging FRs in marine fish and wildlife, we investigated their bioaccumulation in four shark species, including shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrhinchus; n = 26), porbeagle (Lamna nasus; n = 4), sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus; n = 6), and common thresher (Alopias vulpinus; n = 4), from coastal and offshore waters of the western North Atlantic Ocean. Median concentrations of emerging FRs, including dechlorane analogues (i.e., dechlorane plus, Dec-602, -603, and - 604), tetrabromo-o-chlorotoluene (TBCT), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), and hexabromobenzene (HBBZ), ranged from 1.4-7.4, 10.2-22.4, 1.0-16.7, and 4.1-17.7 ng/g lipid weight (lw), respectively. Although concentrations of emerging FRs were generally 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than those of legacy FRs (i.e., PBDEs, 312-800 ng/g lw and hexabromocyclododecane or HBCDD, 17.2-99.3 ng/g lw), they were detected in more than 80% of the shark livers. Analysis of available biological data indicated that fork length significantly correlated with the concentrations of ΣPBDEs, HBCDD, ΣDechloranes or TBCT in shortfin mako livers. This indicates that longer-term exposure likely results in elevated FR concentrations in sharks. Our findings suggest likely exposure of western North Atlantic fish and wildlife to several emerging FRs, including dechloranes, BTBPE, HBBZ, and TBCT. Additional studies are needed to better elucidate their potential risks to fish and wildlife as well as the variety of environmental and biological factors influencing these risks.

Developmental and Hepatic Gene Expression Changes in Chicken Embryos Exposed to p-Tert-Butylphenyl Diphenyl Phosphate and Isopropylphenyl Phosphate via Egg Injection

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are used in a variety of products such as clear coats, resins, and plastics; however, research into their toxicological effects is limited. p-Tert-butylphenyl diphenyl phosphate (BPDP) and isopropylphenyl phosphate (IPPP) are two OPFRs that were prioritized for whole-animal toxicological studies based on observed effects in cultured avian hepatocytes in a previous study. The present study investigates the toxicity of BPDP and IPPP in chicken embryos at different developmental stages by evaluating morphological and gene expression endpoints. Chicken eggs were exposed via air cell injection to 0-250 μg/g (nominal) of either compound and then artificially incubated. At day 11 (midincubation), liver samples were collected for mRNA expression analysis; and at day 20 (1 day prehatch), morphological measurements and liver samples for transcriptomic evaluation were collected. At 250 μg/g, gallbladder size was significantly reduced for both compounds, head/bill length and tarsus length were significantly decreased, and liver somatic index was significantly increased following IPPP exposure only. No effects on mortality were observed up to the highest administered concentration for either chemical. Using a ToxChip polymerase chain reaction array, we report significant differences in hepatic gene expression for both compounds and time points; the most pronounced transcriptomic effects occurred at midincubation. Genes related to xenobiotic metabolism, bile acid/cholesterol regulation, and oxidative stress were significantly dysregulated. Given these changes observed throughout avian embryonic development, further research into the long-term effects of BPDP and IPPP are warranted, especially as they pertain to liver cholestasis. Legacy and novel brominated flame-retardants in different fish types from inland freshwaters of South Africa: levels, distribution and implications for human health

This study report the presence of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel brominated flame-retardants (NBFRs) in muscle tissues of Labeo capensis (mudfish), Labeo umbratus (moggel), Cyprinus carpio (carp) and Clarias gariepinus (catfish) from Vaal River, South Africa. The concentrations (in ng g^-1 wet weight (ww)) of these contaminants ranged from LOQ to 12.8 ng g^-1 ww in catfish, with lowest concentrations found for mudfish ranging from <LOQ to 3.4 ng g^-1 ww. This variation was attributed to species-specific ecological status such as feeding habit and trophic level with BDE209 and BB209 as a major congeners among PBDEs and PBBs, respectively, and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) as a major flame retardants among the NBFRs. The hazard quotients of these contaminants were very low indicating that these contaminants do not pose health risk to South Africans via fish consumption.

Ten Bird Species, Six Guilds, Three Habitats, and 59 Chlorinated and Brominated POPs: What do 64 Eggs from the Largest Economic Hub of Southern Africa tell us?

There is little information on how POPs in eggs of different terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic birds share a large urban and rural landscape relate. We collected and analysed 64 eggs belonging to ten species of six feeding guilds, and compared organic chlorinated pesticide (OCP), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), and brominated flame retardants (BFR) residue concentrations and compositions. The eggs were collected in the Gauteng and the northern part of the Free Sate provinces of South Africa, one of the largest economic hubs in Africa. White-breasted Cormorant and African Darter eggs (at the highest trophic level as large aquatic predators) had the highest ΣOCP and ΣPCB concentrations, and Cape Sparrow and Southern Masked Weaver (granivores) eggs had the lowest concentrations, corresponding to the lowest trophic level in our collection. The highest percentage p,p'-DDT were in eggs of the terrestrial insectivore Crowned Lapwing (24%) and the scavenging African Sacred Ibis (17%), and the lowest in African Darter (1.0%) and White-breasted Cormorant (0.9%) eggs, suggesting that recency of DDT releases in a region cannot be gauged by this metric. African Sacred Ibis and Southern Masked Weaver eggs had the highest ΣBFR concentrations, with Crowned Lapwing, Cattle Egret, and White-breasted Cormorant eggs the least. Based on feeding guilds, the mean ΣPOP concentrations increased from granivore, aquatic omnivore, scavenger, terrestrial insectivore, small aquatic predator, to large aquatic predator. Mean ΣPOP concentrations in eggs increased from terrestrial, to wetland, to aquatic habitat birds. Interesting patterns were observed with multivariate analyses. There were no significant regressions between egg size and any summed POP classes. ΣBFR concentrations were not correlated with ΣOCPs or ΣPCBs. Eggshell thinning of African Darter eggs was associated with p,p'-DDE and ΣPCB suggesting risk. Other metrics also suggest risk. Therefore, different species of terrestrial and aquatic birds from the same area acquire and deposit POPs in different proportions and quantities in their eggs. Trophic levels and habitat explain the overall patterns, but detailed differences were found, some of which we are unable to explain. Based on POPs residues in terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic bird eggs, different POPs classes behave differently in a shared large inland industrial area, complicating deductions about POPs and associated risks based on one or few species.

Dechlorane Plus and Related Compounds in Food-A Review

Dechlorane Plus is a polychlorinated compound which has exclusively anthropic origin. This compound has been manufactured for close to 60 years for various applications, but mainly as flame retardant. Dechlorane Plus and other Dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs) are currently marketed as a replacement for Dechlorane, also known as Mirex, banned in 1978. These compounds share comparable properties to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as persistence in the environment, high lipophilicity, bioaccumulation through the food web and adverse effects on the environment and human health. Despite their long production history, they have been only recently reported in various environmental compartments, such as air, soil, and foodstuff. The aim of this review is to provide a picture of the current state of knowledge on worldwide DRC levels in food, in order to highlight gaps and research needs. The review compares the data on DRC contamination available in literature, considering different food categories and sampling country. In addition, it is specified whether the data were obtained from studies on foodstuff to estimate dietary intake, to evaluate the contamination near the e-waste treatment area or for environmental monitoring purposes.

Persistent organic pollutants in eggs from south Texas Aplomado falcons

A program to reintroduce the Northern Aplomado falcon (Falco femoralis septentrionalis) in south Texas and the southwestern United States was initiated in the late 1970s. Fledgling Aplomado falcons were first released in the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in 1993 and the first nesting pair in the area was recorded by 1995. During 2004-2017 we collected addled eggs from nesting pairs in the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and Matagorda Island in south Texas, to determine if environmental contaminants in Aplomado falcon eggs had decreased over time and if eggshell thickness values were similar to those in the pre-DDT era. We analyzed organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, and PBDEs in 60 egg homogenates by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Eggshells were measured to determine thickness and to correlate with contaminant concentrations. Mean concentration in eggs were 244 ng/g ww for p,p'- DDE, 270 ng/g ww for PCBs and 10 ng/g ww for PBDEs. These values were lower than those reported in a previous study for eggs collected between 1999 and 2003, with a mean of 821 ng/g ww for p,p'-DDE and 1228 ng/g ww for total PCBs. Eggshell thickness ranged from 0.206 mm to 0.320 mm (n = 156). Overall, contaminant concentrations in eggs of Aplomado falcons were low, at levels not likely to impact the recovery of the species. Data from this and previous studies indicate that DDE has decreased significantly in eggs of Aplomado falcons over the last 25 years in south Texas. Breeding populations have been steady at over 30 breeding pairs in south Texas since 2011, although they decreased to 24 pairs in 2018 following Hurricane Harvey.

Assessing anthropogenic risk to sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) for reintroduction into San Francisco Bay

Southern sea otters have been actively managed for their conservation and recovery since listing on the federal Endangered Species Act in 1977. Still, they remain constrained to a geographically small area on the central coast of California relative to their former coast-wide range, with population numbers far below those of the estimated optimal sustainable population size. Species managers have discussed reintroducing southern sea otters into parts of their historic range to facilitate sustained population growth and geographic range expansion. San Francisco Bay (SFB), historically home to several thousand sea otters, is one location identified as a candidate release site for these reintroductions. The return of sea otters to SFB could bring benefits to local ecosystem restoration and tourism, in addition to spurring sea otter population growth to meet recovery goals. However, this is a highly urbanized estuary, so sea otters could also be exposed to serious anthropogenic threats that would challenge a successful reintroduction. In light of these potential detriments we performed a spatially-explicit risk assessment to analyze the suitability of SFB for southern sea otter reintroduction. We looked at threats to sea otters specific to SFB, including: the impacts of vessel traffic from commercial shipping, high-speed ferries, and recreational vessels; environmental contaminants of methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls; major oil spills; and commercial fishing. Factors that influenced the relative threat imposed by each stressor included the spatio-temporal extent and intensity of the stressor and its mitigation potential. Our analysis revealed the complex spatial and temporal variation in risk distribution across the SFB. The type and magnitude of anthropogenic risk was not uniformly distributed across the study area. For example, the central SFB housed the greatest cumulative risk, where a high degree of vessel traffic and other stressors occurred in conjunction. The individual stressors that contributed to this risk score varied across different parts of the study area as well. Whereas vessel traffic, particularly of fast ferries, was a high scoring risk factor in in the north and central bay, in the south bay it was environmental contaminants that caused greater risk potential. To help identify areas within the study area that managers might want to target for release efforts, the spatially-explicit risk map revealed pockets of SFB that could provide both suitable habitat and relatively low overall risk. However in some cases these were adjacent or in close proximity to identified high-risk portions of habitat in SFB. This predictive suitability and risk assessment can be used by managers to consider the spatial distribution of potential threats, and risk abatement that may be necessary for sea otters to re-occupy their historic home range in SFB.

Occurrence and mass balance of emerging brominated flame retardants in a municipal wastewater treatment plant

As a class of alternative flame retardants, "novel" brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have been widely used in clothing, textiles, electronics, building materials, and plastics and are frequently found in environmental samples. Although the use and discharge of NBFRs are increasing all over the world, little information is available about their fates and removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study investigated the occurrence and behavior of 2,4,6-tribromophenyl allyl ether (ATE), 2,3-dibromopropyl tribromophenyl ether (DPTE), tetrabromo-o-chlorotoluene (TBCT), pentabromobenzyl acrylate (PBBA), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-phthalate (TBPH), and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in a municipal WWTP in Beijing, China. Four of the NBFRs (ATE, BTBPE, TBPH, and DBDPE) were detected in all wastewater and biosolid samples. The dominant compound in both wastewater and biosolid samples was DBDPE, with concentrations in the ranges of 6.4-18 ng/L and 83-288 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively. A mass flow analysis indicated that the overall removal efficiencies were 31±18% for ATE, 97±1.5% for DPTE, 79±11% for BTBPE, 87±5.3% for TBPH, and 93±3.3% for DBDPE, but the removal efficiency in aqueous phase only ranged from -43 (ATE) to 57% (DBDPE). The low and negative removal efficiencies of ATE were possibly due to the transformation of DPTE during the anaerobic treatment processes. Under the aerobic conditions, BTBPE, TBPH and DBDPE underwent a very slow biodegradation. A total of 68-91% of the initial mass loadings of ATE, BTBPE, TBPH and DBDPE were found in the biosolid samples, suggesting that the four NBFRs were removed mainly via sorption in the WWTP.The biosolid was a huge reservoir of target NBFRs, and effective removal of NBFRs during treatment in the WWTP is critical.

Hexabromocyclododecane in riverine and estuarine sediments from Osaka, Japan: spatial distribution and concentration variability within identical samples

In this study, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in riverine and estuarine sediments was investigated in Osaka, Japan. The mean total HBCD concentration detected in sediments ranged from < 0.50 to 130 ng g^-1 dry weight. This exceeded the ubiquitous HBCD contamination level found globally but was lower than that in areas affected by point sources, such as textile industries and expanded polystyrene plants. Sewage effluent was one of the suspected point sources of HBCD in the study area. The HBCD concentrations in sediments were highly dependent on certain factors, such as the location of the sampling site (proximity to possible emission sources), sediment properties (silt or sand), and organic substance content. The range of the diastereomer composition of α- and γ-HBCD was wider than that in other studies. Repeatability tests (n = 3) were conducted for all samples to assess the variability in the HBCD concentrations within identical sediment samples. Some variations were observed in the HBCD concentrations and diastereomer compositions within the repeatability test results at some sampling sites; nevertheless, the same samples were extracted and analyzed in triplicate. The bromine contents of the extracts of these samples were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence, and the results agreed well with those estimated from the LC-MS/MS results. From these results, it was confirmed that several sediment samples contained heterogeneously distributed HBCD. The risk characterization ratios (predicted environmental concentration/predicted no-effect concentration) of sites with high HBCD concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 1; thus, further information is required, and the sediment HBCD levels in this region should be continuously studied.

First report on polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the Iranian Coral Islands: Concentrations, profiles, source apportionment, and ecological risk assessment

Coral reefs are challenged by multiple stressors due to the growing industrialization. Despite that, data on their environment are still scarce, and no research is yet performed on polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the Persian Gulf area. Seeking to fill in this gap, the present study aims to determine spatio-vertical distributions, source apportionment and ecological risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the sediment cores and seawater samples from ten coral reef Islands in the Persian Gulf, Iran. Σ₁₂PBDEs concentrations ranged from 0.42 ± 0.04 to 47.14 ± 1.35 ng g^-1 dw in sediments, and from 1.17 ± 0.06 to 7.21 ± 1.13 ng L^-1 in seawater. The vertical polybrominated diphenyl ethers distribution varied significantly among the sampling stations and different depths with a decreasing trend towards the surface and peaks around 12-20 cm. Both in the seawater and sediment samples, elevated polybrominated diphenyl ethers loadings were observed in highly industrialized areas. Deca-bromodiphenyl ether-209 was the predominant congener along the sediment cores, whereas Tetra-bromodiphenyl ether-47 and Penta-bromodiphenyl ether-100 dominated in seawater samples. Commercial Deca-bromodiphenyl ether mixture was found to be the major source of polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Penta-bromodiphenyl ether was revealed to be the major ecological risk driver in the study area: it posed medium to high-risk quotient to sediment dwelling organisms. This study indicated that coral reefs are playing an important role in retaining polybrominated diphenyl ethers and highlighted the need to manage polybrominated diphenyl ethers contamination in the coral reef environment.

Changes in the immune function of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) provide insights into strategies against BDE-47 stress

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous in marine ecosystems and have been suggested to bioaccumulate in aquatic food webs, with potentially negative impacts on marine organism. In this study, a 21-day experiment was performed under controlled laboratory conditions, in which 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), the most biotoxic PBDE in the marine environment, was fed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at concentrations of 50 and 500 ng g^-1 in the diet. BDE-47 significantly decreased the specific growth rate of O. mykiss and was highly concentrated in the liver and head kidney, as evidenced by increased bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values. Tissue observation revealed impairment of the microstructure of the head kidney. Important immune factors in the skin, blood and head kidney were significantly inhibited by BDE-47 treatment (p < 0.05), whereas the respiratory burst activity of macrophages was enhanced. Additionally, immune-related genes were strongly downregulated following BDE-47 exposure (p < 0.05). In a bacterial challenge, the treatment groups had much higher mortality than did the control group (p < 0.05). BDE-47 accumulated and impaired immune organs, and the hierarchy of immune responses was impaired, consequently reducing O. mykiss resistance to pathogen invasion.

Uptake, depuration, bioaccumulation, and selective enrichment of dechlorane plus in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Dechlorane plus (DP) is a chlorinated flame retardant with high production volume (HPV) and is widely used in our daily necessities. In the present study, a laboratory-scale microcosm was built up to simulate the uptake, depuration, bioaccumulation, and stereoselective enrichment of DP in a lower concentration and equilibration condition. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were used for 32 days exposure and 32 days depuration. The concentration ratios of syn-DP to total DP (f_syn values) in fish examined were lower than that in commercial products. Rate constants of uptake (k_S) and elimination (k_e) for the syn- and anti-DP were calculated using a first-order kinetic model. The uptake rate constants of syn- and anti-DP were 0.63 and 0.89 day^-1, respectively. The depuration rate constants of syn-DP (0.11 day^-1) were similar to anti-DP (0.096 day^-1), suggesting that anti-DP is absorbed faster than syn-DP by common carp. The estimated bioconcentration factors for both syn-DP (5700 L/kg) and anti-DP (9300 L/kg) were higher than the bioconcentration hazard criteria outlined in the Stockholm Convention, suggesting the bioconcentration potential to aquatic organisms for DP.

Enhanced dehalogenation and coupled recovery of complex electronic display housing plastics by sub/supercritical CO2

Electronic display housing plastics contain a high amount of halogenated compounds such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Compared with moderate critical conditions of conventional eco-friendly sub/supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO₂), a novel and sustainable procedure by using improved Sc-CO₂ was developed for disposal of this type of plastic. The main merit of the process was that complex halogen-containing plastics were safely disposed and halogen-free products were recycled without using catalysts or additives. It was discovered that additive BFRs were initially extracted by Sc-CO₂ technique and then it decomposed accompanied with PVC rapidly to form HBr and HCl, which could be separated by traditional bromine stripping techniques from seawater. Based on response surface methodology (RSM), the maximum debromination and dechlorination efficiencies were achieved at 99.51% and 99.12% respectively. After the treatment, halogen-free products such as solid carbon materials and organic chemical feedstocks were obtained. Mechanism study elucidated that free radicals reaction involving chain initiation, growth and termination induced the polymer decomposition to form these products. This study provides an applicable and green approach for disposal and recovery of halogen-containing plastics.

Distribution and diastereoisomeric profiles of hexabromocyclododecanes in air, water, soil, and sediment samples in South Korea: Application of an optimized analytical method

In this study, the levels and distribution patterns of HBCD diastereoisomers in air, water, soil, and sediment samples in South Korea were investigated after optimizing the UPLC-MS/MS analytical process. Extraction and cleanup efficiencies were tested using several different extraction solvents and adsorbents. Dichloromethane was selected as the base extraction solvent, and multi-layer silica gel (MSG) and MSG-alumina columns were selected for the removal of HBCDs from complex environmental matrices. The concentration of Ʃ₃ HBCDs was 22-133 pg/m³, 10-128 ng/g, 0.2-151 ng/L, and 0.5-552 ng/g dw for air, soil, water, and sediment samples, respectively. Relatively higher concentrations of Ʃ₃ HBCDs were observed at stations adjacent to industrial facilities (e.g., rubber and plastic, textile, chemical, fabricated metal, and wholesale trade factories) associated with the use of commercial HBCDs. The proportion of γ-HBCD in the soil (48.3-86.2%) and sediment (54.2-78.1%, except for one station) samples was similar to that found in technical and commercial HBCDs. In contrast, α-HBCD (52.3-71.2%) was dominant in all air samples, while the water samples displayed no clear trend in their diastereoisomer profiles. As the first nationwide report on HBCD diastereoisomers in the environment, this study demonstrates that most environmental compartments in South Korea are moderately contaminated with HBCDs.

Spatial Distribution and Congener Profiles of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Surface Sediment from Sanmen Bay and Xiamen Bay, Southeast China

Coastal areas are influenced by anthropogenic input of a variety of organic pollutants, among which polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) represent an important group. In the present study, we investigated the contamination status of PBDEs in surface sediment from two economically important Bays in Southeast China, Sanmen Bay (SMB; n = 29) and Xiamen Bay (XMB; n = 10). Concentrations of ∑PBDEs ranged from 2.2 to 78.5 ng/g dw (median 5.7 ng/g dw) in SMB and 7.9-276.0 ng/g dw (median 43.5 ng/g dw) in XMB, respectively. A nearshore-offshore decreasing trend was observed for both ∑PBDEs and BDE-209 concentrations, indicating strong urban influences. Although the current levels would not produce any significant impact on benthos and aquatic ecosystems of the studied regions, continuous monitoring is needed to understand the temporal trends of contamination in the important coastal waters and whether sediment-associated PBDEs constitute a potential source to aquatic ecosystems.

Spatiotemporal distribution, source apportionment and ecological risk assessment of PBDEs and PAHs in the Guanlan River from rapidly urbanizing areas of Shenzhen, China

In this study, nine congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and sixteen congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in water samples to elucidate their spatial distribution, congener profiles, sources and ecological risks in the Guanlan River during both the dry season (DS) and the wet season (WS). The concentration of Σ₉PBDE ranged from 58.40 to 186.35 ng/L with an average of 115.72 ng/L in the DS, and from 8.20 to 37.80 ng/L with an average of 22.15 ng/L in the WS. Meanwhile, the concentration of Σ₁₆PAHs was ranged from 121.80 to 8371.70 ng/L with an average of 3271.18 ng/L in the DS and from 1.85 to 7124.25 ng/L with an average of 908.11 ng/L in the WS. The concentrations of PBDEs and PAHs in the DS were significantly higher than those in the WS, probably due to the dilution of the river during the rainy season. Moreover, the spatial distribution of pollutants revealed decreasing trend in the concentration from upstream to downstream and almost identical pattern was observed during both seasons. The source apportionment suggested that penta-BDE and to some extent octa-BDE commercial products were major sources of PBDEs in the study area. However, the sources of PAHs were mainly comprised of fossil fuels and biomass burning, followed by the petroleum products and their mixtures. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated PBDEs contamination posed high ecological risks, while PAHs exhibited low or no ecological risks in the study area. Consistent with the environmental levels, the ecological risks of pollutants were relatively lower in the WS, compared to that in the DS. The results from this study would provide valuable baseline data and technical support for policy makers to protect the ecological environment of the Guanlan River.

Inhomogeneity of sediment samples in analysis of hexabromocyclododecane

The repeatability test of the analytical method for hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) was conducted with sediment sample. The maximum HBCD concentration exceeded the minimum by a factor of 90 even though the identical sediment samples were used. Therefore, we examined which step of the analytical method was the factor causing variability. We examined the blank test, and confirmation test of the extraction and purified procedure. From these results, we confirmed that there was nothing wrong with the accuracy of our analytical method. These results indicate that the variability of HBCD concentration in the repeatability test was attributed not to the analytical method, but to the inhomogeneity of the sediment sample. Aluminum, silicon, and organic carbon in sediments were measured to compare the variability of these concentrations with that of HBCD concentration. These concentrations were similar values within identical samples which showed variability in HBCD concentration. HBCD concentration in several samples did not correlate with organic carbon content. These results suggests that sediment samples were homogeneous by itself, and HBCD was heterogeneously distributed in spite of homogeneity of organic carbon in sediment. The sediment sample with variability in HBCD concentration showed different HBCD diastereomer compositions in identical sediment. It implies that the sample contained HBCD derived from different histories or point sources. Even though we increased sample amounts to analyze the homogeneity of the sample, HBCD concentration varied within identical samples if the sample had a hot spot. Past monitoring data may contain overestimation or underestimation of HBCD concentration in sediment.

Novel brominated flame retardant (NBFR) concentrations and spatial distributions in global fishmeal

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), which are lipophilic compounds that have been widely applied after the phasing-out of legacy BFRs, can bioaccumulate through the food chain. However, information on NBFRs in animal feeds, the beginning of farm-to-fork pathway, is very limited. Fishmeal is one of the most widely applied feedstuff worldwide. The present study identified eleven NBFRs from ninety-two globally collected fishmeal samples with levels in the range of 0.13-822 (mean: 15.1 ± 85.5) ng/g lipid weight (lw). Hexabromobenzene (HBB) and pentabromotoluene (PBT) were the most prevalent contributors (detection frequencies: 95.7% and 73.9%, respectively), and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) was the weightiest contributor (accounted for 67.1% of the ΣNBFRs, mean: 12.1 ± 84.8 ng/g lw). From a geographical view, the highest NBFR level was found in Chinese fishmeal. The NBFRs fell within an order of magnitude in South America, Southeast Asia, Europe and United States. DBDPE was predominant in the fishmeal collected from China, South America and United States, but it was not detected in European fishmeal. The NBFR levels are significantly lower compared to the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (p < 0.01), indicating that the distribution of NBFRs was not as wide as PBDEs in fishmeal. DBDPE was significantly correlated with BDE209 (r = 0.557, p < 0.01), which implies that the two chemicals might have similar sources. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR)results imply that the NBFRs might have similar persistence and biomagnification potential as legacy lipophilic POPs.

Halogenated organic pollutants in sediments and organisms from mangrove wetlands of the Jiulong River Estuary, South China

Eighteen sediments and four biota species were collected from mangrove wetlands of the Jiulong River Estuary (JRE) in South China to investigate the distribution of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), dechlorane plus (DP) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE). Concentrations of ΣDDTs, ΣPCBs, ΣPBDEs, DBDPE, DP, and BTBPE in mangrove sediments ranged from 21 to 84, 0.52-2.5, 9.0-66, 5.1-32, 0.05-0.14, and 0.03-0.25 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Levels of ΣDDTs, ΣPCBs, ΣPBDEs, DBDPE and DP in mangrove biota ranged from 950 to 30000, 56-400, 8.0-35, nd-20 and 0.44-3.1 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. DDTs were the predominant halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in mangrove sediments from the JRE, while PBDEs were the major HOPs in mangrove sediments from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), suggesting that sediments in JRE and PRE had different sources of HOPs. The dominance of DDTs was found in both mangrove sediments and biota from the JRE, indicating that HOPs in JRE environment mainly come from agricultural sources. The biota-sediment accumulation factors for DDTs and PCBs were significantly higher than those of PBDEs, DBDPE and DP, suggesting high bioavailability of DDTs and PCBs in mangrove biota. Trophic magnification factors for DDTs, PCBs, PBDEs, and DP were 10.5, 3.00, 2.66 and 1.23, respectively, indicating their potential of biomagnification in mangrove food webs.

Characterization of brominated, chlorinated, and phosphate flame retardants in San Francisco Bay, an urban estuary

Flame retardant chemical additives are incorporated into consumer goods to meet flammability standards, and many have been detected in environmental matrices. A uniquely wide-ranging characterization of flame retardants was conducted, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and 52 additional brominated, chlorinated, or phosphate analytes, in water, sediment, bivalves, and harbor seal blubber of San Francisco Bay, a highly urbanized estuary once considered a hot spot for PBDE contamination. Among brominated flame retardants, PBDEs remained the dominant contaminants in all matrices, though declines have been observed over the last decade following their phase-out. Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and other hydrophobic, brominated flame retardants were commonly detected at lower levels than PBDEs in sediment and tissue matrices. Dechlorane Plus (DP) and related chlorinated compounds were also detected at lower levels or not at all across all matrices. In contrast, phosphate flame retardants were widely detected in Bay water samples, with highest median concentrations in the order TCPP > TPhP > TBEP > TDCPP > TCEP. Concentrations in Bay water were often higher than in other estuarine and marine environments. Phosphate flame retardants were also widely detected in sediment, in the order TEHP > TCrP > TPhP > TDCPP > TBEP. Several were present in bivalves, with levels of TDCPP comparable to PBDEs. Only four phosphate flame retardants were detected in harbor seal blubber: TCPP, TDCPP, TCEP, and TPhP. Periodic, multi-matrix screening is recommended to track contaminant trends impacted by changes to flammability standards and manufacturing practices, with a particular focus on contaminants like TDCPP and TPhP that were found at levels comparable to thresholds for aquatic toxicity.

Spatial and Temporal Trends (2004-2016) of Selected Alternative Flame Retardants in Fish of the Laurentian Great Lakes

Following the phase-out of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) flame retardants (FRs) from North American markets, the use of alternative FRs has increased. In this study the occurrence and spatiotemporal distributions of 18 dechlorane analogues (collectively referred to as DECs) and 20 alternative brominated FRs (referred to as ABFRs, i.e., brominated FRs other than PBDEs and HBCDD) were investigated in top predator fish megacomposites (i.e., a composite of all 50 fish) collected yearly from each of the Great Lakes from 2004 to 2016. Frequently detected substances include dechlorane 602, 603, 604 Component B, anti- and syn-dechlorane plus, and chlordene plus, as well as several brominated benzene FRs (i.e., hexabromobenzene, pentabromotoluene, and tetrabromo- o-chlorotoluene). Concentrations of ΣDECs and ΣABFRs ranged from 0.33-31.9 ng/g lipid weight (lw) (0.01-8.3 ng/g wet weight or ww) and 0.91-54.7 ng/g lw (0.09-7.1 ng/g ww), respectively. Flame retardant contamination exhibited chemical-specific spatial variations across the five lakes. Concentrations of ΣABFRs in Lake Erie fish were generally lower than those from other lakes. By contrast, fish ΣDEC concentrations were highest in Lake Ontario and the composition of dechlorane analogues differed significantly between Lake Ontario and the other lakes, indicating likely point-source influences. Temporal analyses revealed declining trends of ΣDECs and ΣABFRs in most lakes except Lake Erie, with age corrected trend slopes of -13.5% to -8.8% and -20.1% to -7.0% per year, respectively.

Perinatal exposure to low-dose decabromodiphenyl ethane increased the risk of obesity in male mice offspring

Decabromodiphenyl Ethane (DBDPE), a kind of new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) used to replace DecaBDE, has been frequently detected in the environment and human samples. In this study, we explored its toxic effects on male mouse offspring after perinatal exposure to DBDPE. During the perinatal period, pregnant ICR mice were exposed to DBDPE (100 μg/kg body weight) via oral gavage. After weaning, male offspring were fed on a low-fat diet and a high-fat diet, respectively. We measured and recorded body weight, liver weight, and epididymis fat mass, blood biochemical markers, metabolites changes in liver, and gene expression involved in lipid and glucose homeostasis. The results showed that perinatal exposure to DBDPE increased the risk of obesity in mouse offspring and affected triglyceride synthesis, bile secretion, purine synthesis, mitochondrial function and glucose metabolism, furthermore, the use of HFD feeding may further exacerbate these effects. All of these results show that early-life exposure to low doses of DBDPE can promote the development of metabolic dysfunction, which in turn induces obesity.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in core sediments from creek ecosystem: occurrence, geochronology, and source contribution

The levels of 15 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners in grab sediment and sediment cores from the Thane creek were monitored for their spatial and temporal distribution. Total PBDE (ΣPBDE) concentrations in grab sediments were ranging from 15.98 to 132.72 ng g^-1 dry weight. BDE-209 was the most abundant congener with percentage contribution in the range of 19-35% to total PBDEs. Total PBDE show multimode concentration with depth in sediment, among which mode at a depth of 10 cm is predominant. Results of sediment core also indicates PBDEs were enormously used in last two decades in surrounding area. Sedimentation rate at the creek was also evaluated using Pb²¹⁰ dating technique. Average percentage contribution of commercial penta-BDE (f_P), octa-BDE (f_O), and deca-BDE (f_D) to the profile found in sediments collected across Thane creek were 24 ± 5, 5 ± 1 and 69 ± 7% (p < 0.001) respectively. Levels of all measured PBDEs in sediment met with guideline values except for the penta-BDE (total, BDE-99 and BDE-100) at few locations.

Bioaccumulation and effects of dietary exposure to the alternative flame retardant, bis(2-ethylhexyl) tetrabromophthalate (TBPH), in the Atlantic killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) tetrabromophthalate (TBPH), a high production volume flame retardant chemical used as a replacement for banned flame retardants, has been detected in media and human and wildlife tissues globally. We describe bioaccumulation and biological effects from dietary exposure of TBPH to an estuarine fish, Atlantic killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus. Briefly, adult fish were fed carrier control or chemically amended diets for 28 d, followed by 14 d of control diet feeding. Diets were amended with TBPH (TBPH_LO diet, 139 μg/g dry wt, or TBPH_HI diet, 4360 μg/g dry wt) or a polychlorinated biphenyl congener (PCB153 diet, 13 μg/g dry wt), which was included as a positive control for bioaccumulation. Although bioaccumulation of either chemical correlated with fish size, only a small proportion of the TBPH offered (<0.5% total TBPH) had bioaccumulated into TBPH-treated fish by 28 d. In contrast, 24.5% of the PCB153 offered was accounted for in 28-d PCB-treated fish. Although 28-d bioaccumulated concentrations of TBPH differed by sex and treatment, sexes did not differ in their rates of TBPH bioaccumulation, and the time to achieve 50% of 28 d concentration (T1/2 ) was estimated to be 13 d. Depuration rates of TBPH did not differ by sex or treatment, and the time after exposure to achieve T1/2 was estimated to be 22 d. Independent of treatment, male fish grew faster than female fish, but for both sexes reproductive condition (gonadal somatic index) declined unexpectedly over the experimental period. Across treatments, only the TBPH_LO treatment affected growth, reducing male but increasing female growth rates by small amounts relative to respective controls. In summary, our study used very high concentrations of dietary TBPH to contaminate fish tissues above the highest levels reported to date in wild biota, yet we observed few adverse biological effects. Spatial Distribution of Novel and Legacy Brominated Flame Retardants in Soils Surrounding Two Australian Electronic Waste Recycling Facilities

Informal recycling of electronic waste (e-waste) has been shown to cause significant brominated flame retardant (BFR) contamination of surrounding soils in a number of Asian and West African countries. However, to the authors' knowledge, there have been no published studies demonstrating polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and novel brominated flame retardant (NBFR) soil contamination from regulated "formal" e-waste processing facilities in developed countries. This study reports on PBDEs (-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, and -209) and NBFRs (PBT, PBEB, HBB, EH-TBB, BTBPE and DBDPE) in 36 soil samples surrounding two Australian e-waste recycling plants and a further eight reference soils. Overall ∑PBDE concentrations ranged 0.10-98 000 ng/g dw (median; 92 ng/g dw) and ∑NBFRs ranged ND-37 000 ng/g dw (median 2.0 ng/g dw). Concentrations in soils were found to be significantly negatively associated with distance from one of the e-waste facilities for ∑penta-BDEs, BDE-183, BDE-209, and ∑NBFR compound groups. ANOVA tests further illustrated the potential for e-waste recycling to significantly elevate concentrations of some BFRs in soils over distances up to 900 m compared to references sites. This study provides the first evidence of soil contamination with PBDEs and NBFRs originating from formal e-waste recycling facilities in Australia, which may have implications for e-waste recycling practices throughout the world.

Diastereoisomer-Specific Biotransformation of Hexabromocyclododecanes by a Mixed Culture Containing Dehalococcoides mccartyi Strain 195

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) stereoisomers may exhibit substantial differences in physicochemical, biological, and toxicological properties. However, there remains a lack of knowledge about stereoisomer-specific toxicity, metabolism, and environmental fate of HBCD. In this study, the biotransformation of (±)α-, (±)β-, and (±)γ-HBCD contained in technical HBCD by a mixed culture containing the organohalide-respiring bacterium Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain 195 was investigated. Results showed that the mixed culture was able to efficiently biotransform the technical HBCD mixture, with 75% of the initial HBCD (∼12 μM) in the growth medium being removed within 42 days. Based on the metabolites analysis, HBCD might be sequentially debrominated via dibromo elimination reaction to form tetrabromocyclododecene, dibromocyclododecadiene, and 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene. The biotransformation of the technical HBCD was likely diastereoisomer-specific. The transformation rates of α-, β-, and γ-HBCD were in the following order: α-HBCD > β-HBCD > γ-HBCD. The enantiomer fractions of (±)α-, (±)β-, and (±)γ-HBCD were maintained at about 0.5 during the 28 days of incubation, indicating a lack of enantioselective biotransformation of these diastereoisomers. Additionally, the amendment of another halogenated substrate tetrachloroethene (PCE), which supports the growth of strain 195, had a negligible impact on the transformation patterns of HBCD diastereoisomers and enantiomers. This study provided new insights into the stereoisomer-specific transformation patterns of HBCD by anaerobic microbes and has important implications for microbial remediation of anoxic environments contaminated by HBCD using the mixed culture containing Dehalococcoides.

Dechlorinated Analogues of Dechlorane Plus

Degradation products of the chlorinated additive flame retardant Dechlorane Plus (DP) have been discovered globally. However, the identity of many of these species remains unknown due to a lack of available analytical standards, hindering the ability to quantitatively measure the amounts of these compounds in the environment. In the present study, synthetic routes to possible dechlorinated DP derivatives were investigated in an effort to identify the environmentally significant degradation products. The methano-bridge chlorines of anti- and syn-DP were selectively replaced by hydrogen atoms to give six new hydrodechlorinated DP analogues. The identity and absolute configuration of all of these compounds were confirmed by GC-MS, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction studies. These compounds were observed in sediment samples from streams and rivers in relatively rural areas of Ontario and are thus environmentally relevant.

From headwaters to estuary: Distribution and fate of halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in a river basin near the largest HFR manufacturing base in China

With the gradual phasing out of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), market demands for alternative halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are increasing. The Laizhou Bay area is the biggest manufacturing base for brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in China, and the Xiaoqing River is the largest and most heavily contaminated river in this region. Water and sediment samples were collected from the headwaters to the estuary of the Xiaoqing River to investigate the distribution and fate of HFRs [i.e., PBDEs, alternative brominated flame retardants (aBFRs) and dechlorane plus (DPs). In the water samples, DPs was the most abundant flame retardant (median: 11.7ng/L), followed by decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) (5.92ng/L). In the sediment samples, DBDPE was the predominant flame retardant (39.5ng/g dw), followed by decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE 209) (2.81ng/g dw). The levels of DBDPE exceeded those of BDE 209 in most samples, indicating the overwhelming replacement of BDE 209 by DBDPE in this area. In the river section of this study, point source and atmospheric deposition followed by land runoff were the major factors influencing the distribution of HFRs, whereas in the estuary, riverine discharge, the estuarine maximum turbidity zone (MTZ), and hydrodynamic parameters played more important roles. Manufacturing is a significant source of contamination of the Xiaoqing River basin through atmospheric deposition and wastewater discharge.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in water, surface sediment, and suspended particulate matter from the Yellow River, China: Levels, spatial and seasonal distribution, and source contribution

Fourteen polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners were measured in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment samples collected from the entire expanse of the Yellow River in dry and wet seasons. Higher concentrations of PBDEs were found in the middle and lower reaches of the river compared with those in the upper reaches, ascribed to the relatively developed and urbanized cities located in the areas near the middle and lower reaches. The PBDE concentrations in the samples collected during the dry season were lower than those in the samples collected during the wet season because of thaw and rainfall. The dominant congener, with a contribution of 44.6-90.3%, was BDE-209, which originated from the residual of commercial deca-BDE. Three groups of congeners in all the samples showed good correlations with the coefficient ranging from 0.662 to 0.999 (p < 0.01), indicating common sources and similar environmental behaviors. Regression analysis suggested that the local industrial product (IP) and population density (PD) were good indicators of PBDEs in the water and sediment of the Yellow River.

Prenatal contribution of 2, 2', 4, 4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) to total body burden in young children

Many scientists made estimates of the body burden of PBDEs from breastmilk and house dust. Interestingly, they have not included the prenatal contribution to the body burden in young children after birth. In order to address how the prenatal contribution is important in the risk assessment of PBDEs in infants up to five years old, we used the median measurements of BDE-47 as a model chemical in 108 neonates in Korea, and made simulations of its disposition out of body from birth to five years. During the simulation periods, the environmental exposure was considered for house dust, babyfood, breastmilk consumption, etc., with assumption of typical exposure scenario applicable to general infants in Korea. About 22% of the total amounts of BDE-47 in newborn remained up to 5years after birth. The relative amounts of BDE-47 from the prenatal source were 20%, 14%, 10%, 8%, 6%, and 4% of the total body burden for 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-year after birth, respectively. The contribution from breastfeeding was 95.2% and 92.2% of the total postnatal exposure amounts at 6-month and 1-year after birth, respectively. After cease of breastfeeding at 1-yr, house dust and food were the important sources of exposure up to 5-yr; however, their contributions to the bodyburden were negligible with consideration of the remaining amounts of the analytes from the breastmilk and prenatal exposure. Suggestively, the innate amounts and pharmacokinetics should be counted in estimating bodyburden of BDE-47.

Critical review of soil contamination by polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs); concentrations, sources and congener profiles

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used in a broad array of polymeric materials such as plastics, foams, resins and adhesives to inhibit the spread of fires since the 1970s. The widespread environmental contamination and well documented toxic effects of PBDEs have led to bans and voluntary withdrawals in many jurisdictions. Replacement novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have, however, exhibited many of the same toxic characteristics as PBDEs and appear to share similar environmental fate. This paper presents a critical review of the scientific literature regarding PBDE and NBFR contamination of surface soils internationally, with the secondary objective of identifying probable pollution sources. An evaluation of NBFR distribution in soil was also conducted to assess the suitability of the newer compounds as replacements for PBDEs, with respect to their land contamination potential. Principle production of PBDEs and NBFRs and their consequent use in secondary polymer manufacture appear to be processes with strong potential to contaminate surrounding soils. Evidence suggests that PBDEs and NBFRs are also released from flame retarded products during disposal via landfill, dumping, incineration and recycling. While the land application of sewage sludge represents another major pathway of soil contamination it is not considered in this review as it is extensively covered elsewhere. Both PBDEs and NBFRs were commonly detected at background locations including Antarctica and northern polar regions. PBDE congener profiles in soil were broadly representative of the major constituents in Penta-, Octa- and Deca-BDE commercial mixtures and related to predicted market place demand. BDE-209 dominated soil profiles, followed by BDE-99 and BDE-47. Although further research is required to gain baseline data on NBFRs in soil, the current state of scientific literature suggests that NBFRs pose a similar risk to land contamination as PBDEs.

Photodebromination behaviors of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in methanol/water systems: Mechanisms and predicting descriptors

This study investigated the photodebromination behaviors of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in methanol or methanol/water systems. The kinetics of three sets of bromated diphenyl ether (BDE) isomers were compared in the same reactors, and the results showed that the PBDE isomers with lower energy of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and higher energy of highest occupied molecular orbital will be degraded faster by ultraviolet (UV) light than other BDE isomers. The overall debromination pathways of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) were elucidated, and we found that the bromine substituents with higher Mulliken charges were preferentially removed. This demonstrated that Mulliken charges can be used to predict the photodebromination pathways of PBDEs. In methanol/water systems, when the ratio of methanol and water decreased, the degradation rate of BDE-47 decreased, whereas that of diphenyl ether increased. This phenomenon can be attributed to the mechanism of photodegradation of PBDEs gradually shifting from the reductive debromination to the undebromination process as the ratio of methanol and water decreases. The chromatogram of high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry during this process also verified this explanation. The debromination pathways of BDE-47 are consistent in methanol/water systems with different methanol to water ratios and in different organic solvents.

Hydroxylated 2-Ethylhexyl tetrabromobenzoate isomers in house dust and their agonistic potencies with several nuclear receptors

In the current study, by combining ultra-high resolution (UHR) MS¹ spectra, MS² spectra, and derivatization, three hydroxylated isomers of 2-ethylhexyl tetrabromobenzoate (OH-TBB) were identified in Firemaster^® 550 and BZ-54 technical products. Also, a new LC-UHRMS method, using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), was developed for simultaneous analysis of OH-TBB, TBB, hydroxylated bis(2-ethylhexyl)-tetrabromophthalate (OH-TBPH) and TBPH in 23 samples of dust collected from houses in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. OH-TBBs were detected in 91% of samples, with a geometric mean concentration of 0.21 ng/g, which was slightly less than those of OH-TBPH (0.35 ng/g). TBB was detected in 100% of samples of dust with a geometric mean concentration of 992 ng/g. Significant (p < 0.001) log-linear relationships between concentrations of OH-TBBs, TBB, or OH-TBPHs and TBPH in dust support the hypothesis of a common source of these compounds. OH-TBBs were found to be strong agonists of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and weaker agonists of the estrogen receptor (ER), but no agonistic potencies was observed with the androgen receptor (AR). Occurrence of OH-TBBs in technical products and house dust, together with their relatively strong PPARγ potencies, indicated their potential risk to health of humans.

Effect of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate on the photolysis of 2,4,4'-tribromophenylphenyl ether

In this study, we have investigated the photolysis of 2,4,4'-tribromophenylphenyl ether (BDE-28) in Triton X-100 (TX-100) solutions, and discussed the effect of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) on the photolysis of BDE-28. The effect of TX-100 on the photolysis of BDE-28 was mainly related to the concentration of TX-100. The fastest photolysis of BDE-28 was at 500 mg L^-1 of the TX-100 solution, and the corresponding photolysis rate constant was 0.12 min^-1. The direct photolysis rate of BDE-28 decreased from 0.17 min^-1 to 0.08 min^-1 and 0.12 min^-1 when NaN₃ and isopropanol were added, respectively. The effect of AQDS on the photolysis of BDE-28 was also mainly related to the concentration of AQDS. When the concentration of AQDS was 0.6 μM, it has a slight influence in promoting the photodegradation of BDE-28; as the AQDS concentrations increased, the suppressing effect was more obvious. AQDS can inhibit the photolysis of BDE-28. Photolysis kinetics and quenching reactions illustrated that BDE-28 can produce a photosensitization reaction in TX-100 solutions, and the effects of AQDS on the photolysis of BDE-28 were mainly dominated by inhibition. In addition to its light shielding effect, AQDS can also combine with BDE-28 and anti-oxidation to inhibit the photolysis of BDE-28. We found that the degradation pathway of BDE-28 was mainly based on de-bromination, and the ions at para positions were preferentially debrominated.

Elevated Concentrations of 4-Bromobiphenyl and 1,3,5-Tribromobenzene Found in Deep Water of Lake Geneva Based on GC×GC-ENCI-TOFMS and GC×GC-μECD

We quantified the concentrations of two little-studied brominated pollutants, 1,3,5-tribromobenzene (TBB) and 4-bromobiphenyl (4BBP), in the deep water column and sediments of Lake Geneva. We found aqueous concentrations of 625 ± 68 pg L^-1 for TBB and 668 ± 86 pg L^-1 for 4BBP over a depth range of 70-191.5 m (near-bottom depth), based on duplicate measurements taken at five depths during three separate 1 month sampling periods at our sampling site near Vidy Bay. These levels of TBB and 4BBP were 1 or 2 orders of magnitude higher than the quantified aqueous concentrations of the components of the pentabrominated biphenyl ether technical mixture, which is a flame retardant product that had a high production volume in Europe before 2001. We observed statistically significant vertical concentration trends for both TBB and 2,2',4,4',6-pentabromobiphenyl ether in the deep water column, which indicates that transport and/or degradation processes affect these compounds. These measurements were enabled by application of a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatograph coupled to an electron capture negative chemical ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC×GC-ENCI-TOFMS) and to a micro-electron capture detector (GC×GC-μECD). GC×GC-ENCI-TOFMS and GC×GC-μECD were found to be >10× more sensitive toward brominated pollutants than conventional GC×GC-EI-TOFMS (with an electron impact (EI) ionization source), the latter of which had insufficient sensitivity to detect these emerging brominated pollutants in the analyzed samples. GC×GC also enabled the estimation of several environmentally relevant partitioning properties of TBB and 4BBP, further confirming previous evidence that these pollutants are bioaccumulative and have long-range transport potential.

From Sediment to Top Predators: Broad Exposure of Polyhalogenated Carbazoles in San Francisco Bay (U.S.A.)

The present study provides the first comprehensive investigation of polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) contamination in an aquatic ecosystem. PHCZs have been found in soil and aquatic sediment from several different regions, but knowledge of their bioaccumulation and trophodynamics is extremely scarce. This work investigated a suite of 11 PHCZ congeners in San Francisco Bay (United States) sediment and organisms, including bivalves (n = 6 composites), sport fish (n = 12 composites), harbor seal blubber (n = 18), and bird eggs (n = 8 composites). The most detectable congeners included 3,6-dichlorocarbazole (36-CCZ), 3,6-dibromocarbazole (36-BCZ), 1,3,6-tribromocarbazole (136-BCZ), 1,3,6,8-tetrabromocarbazole (1368-BCZ), and 1,8-dibromo-3,6-dichlorocarbazole (18-B-36-CCZ). The median concentrations of ΣPHCZs were 9.3 ng/g dry weight in sediment and ranged from 33.7 to 164 ng/g lipid weight in various species. Biomagnification was observed from fish to harbor seal and was mainly driven by chlorinated carbazoles, particularly 36-CCZ. Congener compositions of PHCZs differed among species, suggesting that individual congeners may be subject to different bioaccumulation or metabolism in species occupying various trophic levels in the studied aquatic system. Toxic equivalent (TEQ) values of PHCZs were determined on the basis of their relative effect potencies (REP) compared to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). The median TEQ was 1.2 pg TEQ/g dry weight in sediment and 4.8-19.5 pg TEQ/g lipid weight in biological tissues. Our study demonstrated the broad exposure of PHCZs in San Francisco Bay and their characteristics of bioaccumulation and biomagnification along with dioxin-like effects. These findings raise the need for additional research to better elucidate their sources, environmental behavior, and fate in global environments.

Legacy and emerging flame retardants (FRs) in the freshwater ecosystem: A review

In this review article, we have compiled and reviewed the previously published available literature on environmental distribution, behaviour, fate and regional trends of legacy and emerging flame retardants (FRs) including brominated (BFRs), organo-phosphate (OPFRs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and dechlorane plus (DP) in the freshwater ecosystem. Transport and fate is discussed briefly with the evidences of de-bromination, sedimentation and accumulation in biota. De-bromination of BDE-209 is considered of concern because the lower brominated congeners are more toxic and mobile thus posing increased risk to the freshwater ecosystem. The available data on temporal and spatial trends as yet, is too few to show any consistent trends, enabling only general conclusions to be drawn. There is a lack of temporal studies in Asia, while, overall the trends are mixed, with both increasing and decreasing concentrations of BFRs and OPFRs. OPFRs and NBFRs have replaced classical BFRs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) in some countries but the amount of PBDEs in the environment is still considerable. Knowledge gaps and recommendations for future research are discussed emphasizing on further monitoring, advanced analytical methodologies, and risk assessment studies to completely understand the science of flame retardants in the freshwater ecosystem.

Critical review of the analysis of brominated flame retardants and their environmental levels in Africa

World-wide, the prevalence of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) is well documented for routine analysis of environmental and biological matrices. There is, however, limited information on these compounds in the African environment and insufficient information on the analytical approaches used to obtain data. This paper presents a review on BFR levels in the African environment and the various analytical methodologies specifically applied in Africa for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polybrominated biphenyls and alternative-BFRs. The analyses include liquid sample preparation using liquid-liquid and solid phase extraction and solid sample preparation involving Soxhlet extraction, with ultrasound-assisted extraction increasingly being applied. Instrumental detection techniques were limited to gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detector and electron impact ionisation with single quadrupole mass spectrometers. Information on congener profile prevalence in indoor dust, soil, aquatic environment (water, sediment, and aquatic organisms), eggs, wastewater treatment plant compartments, landfills (leachate and sediment) and breast milk are presented. Although PBDEs were inconsistently detected, contamination was reported for all investigated matrices in the African environment. The manifestation in remote regions indicates the ubiquitous prevalence and long-range transport of these compounds. Levels in sediment, and breast milk from some African countries were higher than reported for Asia and Europe. Due to limited data or non-detection of alternative-BFRs, it is unclear whether banned formulations were replaced in Africa. Most of the data reported for BFR levels in Africa were obtained in non-African laboratories or in South Africa and formed the basis for our discussion of reported contamination levels and related methodologies.
