Metals in particle-size fractions of the soils of five European cities

Exposure risks of lead and other metals to humans: A consideration of specific size fraction and methodology

Particle size is a critical influencing factor in assessing human exposure risk as fine particles are generally more hazardous than larger coarse particles. However, how particle composition influences human health risk is only poorly understood as different studies have different utilised different definitions and as a consequence there is no consensus. Here, with a new methodology taking insights of each size fraction load (%GSFload), metal bioaccessibility, we classify which specific particle size can reliably estimate the human exposure risk of lead and other metals. We then validate these by correlating the metals in each size fraction with those in human blood, hair, crop grain and different anthropogenic sources. Although increasing health risks are linked to metal concentration these increase as particle size decrease, the adjusted-risk for each size fraction differs when %GSFload is introduced to the risk assessment program. When using a single size fraction (250-50 µm, 50-5 µm, 5-1 µm, and < 1 µm) for comparison, the risk may be either over- or under-estimated. However, by considering bulk and adjusting the risk, it would be possible to obtain results that are closer to the real scenarios, which have been validated through human responses and evidence from crops. Fine particle size fractions (< 5 µm) bearing the mineral crystalline or aggregates (CaCO3, Fe3O4, Fe2O3, CaHPO4, Pb5(PO4)3Cl) alter the accumulation, chemical speciation, and fate of metals in soil/dust/sediment from the different sources. Loaded lead in the size fraction of < 50 µm has a significantly higher positive association with the risk-receptor biomarkers (BLLs, Hair Pb, Corn Pb, and Crop Pb) than other size fractions (bulk and 50-250 µm). Thus, we conclude that the < 50 µm fraction would be likely to be recommended as a reliable fraction to include in a risk assessment program. This methodology acts as a valuable instrument for future research undertakings, highlighting the importance of choosing suitable size fractions and attaining improved accuracy in risk assessment results that can be effectively compared.

Potentially toxic elements and lead isotopic signatures in the 10 μm fraction of urban dust: Environmental risk enhanced by resuspension of contaminated soils

In urban environments, soils are a sink of pollutants and might become a source of contamination, as they commonly display potentially toxic elements (PTE) concentrations above the legislative limits. Particularly, the inhalable fraction of soils (<10 μm) is enriched in PTE compared to bulk soils (BS). The enrichment makes these particles an environmental hazard because of their susceptibility to resuspension and their potential contribution to road dust (RD) and atmospheric particulate matter (PM10) pollution. To gain a better insight into urban contamination dynamics we studied the BS, the resuspended <10 μm fraction of BS (Res-BS) and RD (Res-RD) in a European historically industrialized and densely populated city. Compared to BS, the Res-BS and Res-RD showed higher PTE concentrations and a higher variability for most of the elements. Lead was the only PTE showing similar concentrations in all the matrices, suggesting shared sources and redistribution pathways within the city. Chemometric elaborations identified Res-BS as a transition between BS and Res-RD or, rather, a Res-RD precursor. Also, Pb was confirmed to be ubiquitous in all the media. In all the matrices, Pb isotopic signatures were investigated and compared with PM10 fingerprints from the same city. The anthropogenic isotopic signature in Res-BS and Res-RD was evident, and samples belonging to neighboring sites showed comparable isotopic ratios. The Res-BS appeared as a key driver for Pb distribution within the city both in Res-RD and in PM10. These results demonstrate the intimate interaction between urban environmental compartments (soil, road dust and PM10), and the active contribution of fine soil fractions to anthropogenic pollution, with relevant policy implications in urban areas since soils were found to contribute directly to air pollution.

Long-term effect of municipal solid waste compost on the recovery of a potentially toxic element (PTE)-contaminated soil: PTE mobility, distribution and bioaccessibility

Compost from municipal solid waste (MSWC) can represent a resource for the environmental management of soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs), since it can reduce their mobility and improve soil fertility. However, the long-term impact of compost on soil recovery has been poorly investigated. To this end, the influence of a MSWC added at different rates (i.e. 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5% w/w) to a multi-PTE-contaminated (e.g. Sb 412 mg kg-1, Pb 2664 mg kg-1 and Zn 7510 mg kg-1) sub-acidic soil (pH 6.4) was evaluated after 6 years since its addition. The MSWC significantly enhanced soil fertility parameters (i.e. total organic carbon, Olsen P and total N) and reduced the PTE labile fractions. The distribution maps of PTEs detected through µXRF analysis revealed the presence of Zn and Pb carbonates in the amended soils, or the formation of complexes between these PTEs and the functional groups of MSWC. A higher oral, inhalation and dermal bioaccessibility of each PTE was detected in the soil fine-grained fractions (< 2 and 2-10 µm) than in coarse particles (10-20 and 20-50 µm). The MSWC amendment generally did not modify the PTE bioaccessibility, while the relative bioaccessibility of cationic PTEs was greater than that of anionic ones (e.g. Cd > Zn > Pb > Sb > As). Pb and Sb showed the highest hazard quotients (e.g. 2.2 and 10 for Sb and Pb, respectively, in children). Overall, the results indicated that the MSWC used can be an effective option for the recovery of PTE-contaminated soils, even in the long term.

Connectivity approach in urban protected area management based on soil and vegetation chemical status

The quality and vitality of cities largely depend on the design, management, and maintenance of green areas, including urban protected areas (UPAs), since they provide multiple benefits for the city. Due to urbanization and higher anthropogenic pressure, green areas are decreasing which directly affects natural habitats and biodiversity. This study aims to assess soil and vegetation chemical status in UPAs in the city of Belgrade, Serbia, and to understand how their distance from pollution hotspots affects soil and vegetation quality. Additionally, this paper considers the inclusion of soil and vegetation conditions in the urban protected areas management as a basis for introducing a connectivity approach to expand green infrastructure throughout the city. Chemical properties, the content of nutrients (C, N, P, and K), and microelements (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sn, Pb, Zr, U, and Th) in soil and conifer needles were analyzed. Results showed that the distance of pollution hotspots does not affect nutrient and microelements concentrations in soil, i.e., they do not vary significantly between sites and do not exceed remediation intervention values. However, the microelements status of vegetation is affected since Cr, Cu, Zn, Sn, and Pb are higher in needles from trees from the city center. The state of soil and plant composition supports the establishment of a network of green corridors and should become a part of management strategies, thus helping biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation, and human well-being in the cities.

The Effects of Different Soil Component Couplings on the Methylation and Bioavailability of Mercury in Soil

Soil composition can influence the chemical forms and bioavailability of soil mercury (Hg). However, previous studies have predominantly focused on the influence of individual components on the biogeochemical behavior of soil Hg, while the influence of various component interactions among several individual factors remain unclear. In this study, artificial soil was prepared by precisely regulating its components, and a controlled potted experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of various organic and inorganic constituents, as well as different soil textures resulting from their coupling, on soil Hg methylation and its bioavailability. Our findings show that inorganic components in the soils primarily exhibit adsorption and fixation effects on Hg, thereby reducing the accumulation of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in plants. It is noteworthy that iron sulfide simultaneously resulted in an increase in soil MeHg concentration (277%). Concentrations of THg and MeHg in soil with peat were lower in rice but greater in spinach. A correlation analysis indicated that the size of soil particles was a crucial factor affecting the accumulation of Hg in plants. Consequently, even though fulvic acid activated soil Hg, it significantly increased the proportion of soil particles smaller than 100.8 μm, thus inhibiting the accumulation of Hg in plants, particularly reducing the concentration of THg (93%) and MeHg (85%) in water spinach. These results demonstrate that the interaction of organic and inorganic components can influence the biogeochemical behavior of soil Hg not only through their chemical properties, but also by altering the soil texture.

Arsenic pollution, geochemical fractions, and leaching characteristics in soil samples from four contaminated sites in the Beijiang River Basin, South China

To remediate historically polluted sites before their land-use changes, it is essential to understand the concentration distribution, geochemical fraction, and migratory behavior of As in soil with varied particle sizes for the use of a sieving procedure. This study investigated the amount and percentage of As in soil with different particle sizes (0.25, 0.25-1, and 1-2 mm) as well as its toxicity characteristic in leaching procedure at four previously contaminated sites in the Beijiang River Basin, South China. The results showed that the total As concentration in the collected soils ranged from 70.1 to 402.8 mg/kg, and only a few percent of soil particle samples had As contents below the local risk threshold value of 60 mg/kg. The amorphous hydrous oxide bound, crystalline hydrous oxide bound, and residual fractions (F3-F5) of the geochemical fraction of As in soil of polluted sites accounted for 82.2-95.7% of the total As distribution. However, the concentration of As in non-specifically bound fractions increased with the mass ratio of soil with coarse particle sizes due to the negative correlation of Fe-bearing minerals concentration with the mass ratio of soil with coarse particle size. According to redundancy analysis, soil with coarse particle sizes and non-specifically bound As were mostly responsible for the As concentration in the leachate. These findings confirmed that a sieving process was not suitable for the remediation of soil As at four historically contaminated sites in the Beijiang River Basin due to the high concentration of As in soil and non-negligible environmental risk of labile extractable As in soil with coarse particle size.

Biochar applications for treating potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contaminated soils and water: a review

Environmental pollution with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has become one of the critical and pressing issues worldwide. Although these pollutants occur naturally in the environment, their concentrations are continuously increasing, probably as a consequence of anthropic activities. They are very toxic even at very low concentrations and hence cause undesirable ecological impacts. Thus, the cleanup of polluted soils and water has become an obligation to ensure the safe handling of the available natural resources. Several remediation technologies can be followed to attain successful remediation, i.e., chemical, physical, and biological procedures; yet many of these techniques are expensive and/or may have negative impacts on the surroundings. Recycling agricultural wastes still represents the most promising economical, safe, and successful approach to achieving a healthy and sustainable environment. Briefly, biochar acts as an efficient biosorbent for many PTEs in soils and waters. Furthermore, biochar can considerably reduce concentrations of herbicides in solutions. This review article explains the main reasons for the increasing levels of potentially toxic elements in the environment and their negative impacts on the ecosystem. Moreover, it briefly describes the advantages and disadvantages of using conventional methods for soil and water remediation then clarifies the reasons for using biochar in the clean-up practice of polluted soils and waters, either solely or in combination with other methods such as phytoremediation and soil washing technologies to attain more efficient remediation protocols for the removal of some PTEs, e.g., Cr and As from soils and water.

The relationships between fractal parameters of soil particle size and heavy-metal content on alluvial-proluvial fan

The particle size distribution (PSD) of soil is an important factor in determining heavy-metal content, mobility, and transformation. One method of describing the soil PSD is applying fractal theory. This study explored the use of fractal theory to characterize soil PSD in the alluvial-proluvial fan located downstream of the Yangshuo lead‑zinc mine. The relationships between fractal parameters of soil PSD and heavy-metal content were analyzed. The results showed that soil in front of the mountain (FM) had higher clay content than soil on the mountain slope (MS) or in the middle of the alluvial-proluvial fan (MF). Among the different sections of the alluvial-proluvial fan, MS had the largest capacity dimension D(0), information dimension D(1), correlation dimension D(2), single fractal dimension D, spectral width Δα, and D(1)/D(0), whereas MF had the greatest symmetry degree Δf. Soil of MS had the highest ω (Cr) and ω (Fe), while FM had the highest ω (Zn), ω (Mn), ω (Pb), ω (Cu), ω (As), ω (Sb), and ω (Cd). Fractal parameters of soil PSD and soil mechanical composition were significantly correlated, while both variables were correlated with heavy-metal content. Fractal parameters can be used to indicate heavy-metal content when heavy metals migrate due to migration of particle size. This study thus introduces an empirical method for evaluating heavy-metal content in soil and analyzing the mechanisms of their migration, making a strong contribution to developing strategies that limit heavy-metal pollution.

Certain patterns of zinc, copper, and lead redistribution across the structural fractions of Chernozems and Urbic Technosols

The purpose of this work was to study the patterns of Zn, Cu, and Pb distribution in soil aggregates of various size fractions. Materials were Calcic Chernozems and Urbic Technosol of the Rostov agglomeration. Soil samples were passed through sieves with different mesh sizes (dry sieving). For the study, particle size fractions of > 10, 7-5, 5-3, 2-1, and < 0.25 mm were sampled, where the total forms of Zn, Cu, and Pb were examined by means of the X-ray fluorescence method. In the Zn content in both Calcic Chernozems and Urbic Technosol peaks in < 0.25-mm particle size fractions, the concentration decreases as particle size grows. Calcic Chernozems display Cu concentrations in mid-size soil particles of 2-1 and 5-3 mm. In Urbic Technosols, the lowest Cu concentration is typically found in particle size fractions of > 10 mm. Pb in Calcic Chernozems is concentrated in mid-size soil aggregates of 2-1 and 5-3 mm. However, Urbic Technosols tend to accumulate silt-fraction lead (< 0.25 mm). A higher zinc concentration in silt-fraction aggregates found in Urbic Technosols in comparison to Calcic Chernozems highlights the anthropogenic origin of a considerable part of this element's soil pool. Excessively high lead content in UR (urbic) horizons leads to the structure degradation and, consequently, to a transformed overall trend of HM distribution across the soil profile in general.

Combining DGT with bioaccessibility methods as tool to estimate potential bioavailability and release of PTEs in the urban soil environment

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in urban soil environments pose a noticeable risk to both ecosystem and human health; however, only a fraction of the elemental content is available for biota. To better know the potential risk of PTEs in the urban soil environment, geochemical fractionation, bioaccessibility, and potential bioavailability of four PTEs (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) were investigated by the combined use of different methods. The results showed that a high non-residual chemical fraction is related to a high bioavailability of the selected elements. The ranges of labile concentration of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in all sampling sites measured by diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) were 3.5-18.0, 14.2-26.5, 0.09-1.0, and 1.8-15.7 μg/L, respectively. The high non-residual contents pointed out a serious hazard to the urban environment. The bioaccessible concentrations in gastric and lung phases were closely positively correlated with DGT-measured content (r = 0.63-0.99, p < 0.05), suggesting the potential use of DGT for the prediction of PTEs risk to human health. Moreover, the correlation of DGT results with the soluble and reducible fractions of PTEs may allow DGT use for quick screenings of the PTEs fraction potentially mobilizable during flooding events in urban soil environments. Our study suggests that combing DGT, bioaccessibility and biogeochemical fractionation could provide a more accurate assessment of the urban environmental quality and be helpful for pollution control and urban planning.

Bioaccessibility of Pb in health-related size fractions of contaminated soils amended with phosphate

Lead (Pb) contamination is one of the most significant exposure hazards to human health. Contaminated soil particles may be eroded and transferred either to the atmosphere (<10 μm) or to streams; or they may be incidentally ingested (<200 μm). Among strategies for the long-term management of this risk, one of the most cost-effective is the reduction of Pb mobility and bioavailability via amendment with phosphorus-containing materials. To clarify the effectiveness of P amendment in reducing Pb mobility and bioaccessibility in different soil size fractions, an experiment was performed by adding a soluble P compound to a historically contaminated urban soil (RO), a mining soil (MI), and an uncontaminated spiked soil (SP) at different P:Pb molar ratios (2.5:1, 5:1, and 15:1). In the <10 μm fraction of soils, P addition reduced bioaccessible Pb only in the SP soil at the highest dose, with little to no effect on RO and MI soils. Similarly, in the coarse fraction, Pb was immobilized only in the SP soil with all three P doses. These results were probably due to the higher stability of Pb in historically contaminated soils, where Pb dissolution is the limiting factor to the formation of insoluble Pb compounds. The bioaccessible proportion of Pb (using SBET method) was higher than 70 % of the total Pb in all soils and was similar in both fine and coarse particle fractions. Due to the enrichment of Pb in finer particles, this implies possible adverse effects to the environment or to human health if these particles escape from the soil. These results call for increasing attention to the effect of remediation activities on fine soil particles, considering their significant environmental role especially in urban and in historically low or moderately contaminated areas.

Metals in urban soils of Europe: A systematic review

Metal contamination of soils is widespread across Europe and is of great concern as it may impact food production, the supply of drinking water and human health (European Environment Agency, 2014; Panagos et al., 2013). Most research to date on soil metal contamination has focussed on agricultural soils (Tóth et al., 2016a). Current knowledge of the extent of urban soil metal contamination in Europe, however, is limited, especially for soils in recreational areas, which is particularly concerning as these areas may have a high footfall. Here, we conducted a systematic analysis of metal contamination in European urban soils based on 174 peer-reviewed studies spanning 143 urban sites and 29 European countries. The results show that reporting of data on urban soil metals is highly heterogeneous across the study area. Over half of all studies are from only five countries (Italy, Spain, UK, Poland and Serbia) and no data are available for 14 other European countries. The metals that most commonly exceed national safety thresholds are Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr and Ni. Elevated levels of these metals are usually attributed to anthropogenic sources, primarily traffic and industry. Some 22 % of urban sites studied show anthropogenic enrichment; this phenomenon is most common in Italy, Serbia and Finland. In contrast, 44 % of urban sites studied show geogenic metal enrichment; this is most common in Italy, the UK and Serbia. The dataset is subject to a sample size bias, whereby soil metal enrichment is identified more frequently in regions with more data. Future studies should focus on key knowledge gaps, such as urban soils in locations with current or historical heavy industrialisation and locations in central and eastern Europe. Study methods should be standardised to facilitate comparison of soil metal data from different studies and European safety thresholds should be identified for key elements.

Mechanisms and influencing factors of yttrium sorption on paddy soil: Experiments and modeling

High-technology rare earth elements (REEs) as emerging contaminants have potentially hazardous risks for human health and the environment. Investigating the sorption of REEs on soils is crucial for understanding their migration and transformation. This study evaluated the sorption mechanisms and influencing factors of the rare earth element yttrium (Y) on paddy soil via integrated batch sorption experiments and theoretical modeling analysis. Site energy distribution theory (SEDT) combined with kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm sorption models were applied to illustrate the sorption mechanism. In addition, the effects of phosphorus (P), solution pH, particle size of soil microaggregates, and initial Y content on the sorption processes were evaluated by self-organizing map (SOM) and Boruta algorithm. The sorption kinetic behavior of Y on paddy soil was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic results showed that the Y sorption was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The generalized Langmuir model well described the isotherm data of Y sorption on heterogeneous paddy soil and soil microaggregates surface. The maximum sorption capacity of Y decreased with increasing soil particle size, which may be related to the number of sorption sites for Y on paddy soil and soil microaggregates, as confirmed by SEDT. The heterogeneity of sorption site energy for Y was the highest in the original paddy soil compared with the separated soil microaggregates. The SOM technique and Boruta algorithm highlighted that the initial concentration of Y and coexisting phosphorus played essential roles in the sorption process of Y, indicating that the addition of phosphate fertilizer may be an effective way to reduce the Y bioavailability in paddy soil in practice. These results can provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management of soil REEs and a theoretical foundation for the remediation of REEs-contaminated soils.

Heavy metal load and effects on biochemical properties in urban soils of a medium-sized city, Ancona, Italy

Urban soils are often mixed with extraneous materials and show a high spatial variability that determine great differences from their agricultural or natural counterparts. The soils of 18 localities of a medium-sized city (Ancona, Italy) were analysed for their main physicochemical and biological properties, and for chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and mercury (Hg) total content, distribution among particle-size fractions, and extractability. Because of the absence of thresholds defining a hot spot for heavy metal pollution in urban soils, we defined a "threshold of attention" (ToA) for each heavy metal aiming to bring out hot spot soils where it is more impellent to intervene to mitigate or avoid potential environmental concerns. In several city locations, the soil displayed sub-alkaline pH, large contents of clay-size particles, and higher TOC, total N, and available P with respect to the surrounding rural areas, joined with high contents of total heavy metals, but low availability. The C biomass, basal respiration, qCO₂, and enzyme activities were compared to that detected in the near rural soils, and results suggested that heavy metals content has not substantially compromised the soil ecological services. We conclude that ToA can be considered as a valuable tool to highlight soil hot spots especially for cities with a long material history and, for a proper risk assessment in urban soils, we suggest considering the content of available heavy metals (rather than the total content) and soil functions.

Application of magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal bioaccessibility to assessments of urban sandstorm contamination and health risks: Case studies from Dunhuang and Lanzhou, Northwest China

Direct ingestion of sandstorm particles is an important pathway in human exposure to heavy metals. This study investigated the potential health risks of heavy metals transported in sandstorms from Dunhuang to Lanzhou in northwestern China using environmental magnetic parameters and metal bioaccessibilities in simulated gastric and intestinal tracts. The mean magnetic susceptibility of sandstorms in Lanzhou was 366.86 × 10^-8 m³/kg, which was more than 5-fold higher than that of sandstorms in Dunhuang, indicating that these sandstorms continuously receive heavy metals with high magnetic mineral content along their pathways. Heavy metal concentrations in sandstorms were higher than background values and those in urban topsoil. Enrichment factors and pollution load indices showed that these heavy metals were derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources, with Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd being strongly influenced by anthropogenic sources. The bioaccessibilities of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the sandstorms of Lanzhou were very high, ranging from 22.69% (Cu) to 50.86% (Pb) for gastric phase, and 12.07% (Pb)-22.11% (Cd) for interstinal phase, with the significant reduction in χ_lf of the physiologically-based extraction testing (PBET) treated sandstorms. The magnetic minerals are significant correlation with the concentrations of heavy metals in sandstorm and effect the release of heavy metals during human digestion process. The overall ecological risk posed by heavy metals contained in sandstorms was relatively low; however, the risk was moderate to high at individual sites. Ingestion posed the highest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for both adults and children, with the risk for children being higher.

Metal biomonitoring using fractioned dust to investigate urinary and oxidative stress biomarkers among occupationally exposed chromite mine workers

Exposure to heavy metals has been associated with the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) among exposed individuals in occupational and environmental settings. Dust is considered a significant contributor to airborne metal exposure, and previous data suggest that their levels in dust may vary based on its particle sizes. However, no biomonitoring study has been reported so far to address the metal-induced oxidative stress using different dust fractions, particularly in occupational settings. We designed a systematic cross-sectional study involving 110 chromite mine workers stratified into loaders (n = 28), extractors (n = 47) and operators (n = 35), and controls (n = 30) to find out the association between dust-bound metal exposure and oxidative stress using urinary creatinine-adjusted metal level as a biomarker of metal exposure. Results suggested elevated urinary levels of Cr 51.34 ± 8.6 along with Pb 34.29 ± 4.39, Cd 21.1 ± 2.6, and Ni 18.98 ± 3.01 µg/g creatinine in exposed (extractor group) workers. Correlating metal levels with oxidative stress revealed elevated malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of 62.28 ± 5.52 nM/dl among the extractors showing high levels of lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, blood superoxide dismutase (SOD) was also found significantly correlated (P = 0.000) with urinary toxic metal levels among exposed workers. We report the association between metal exposure and oxidative stress in exposed mining workers that may give rise to workers' susceptibility towards genetic and non-genetic health implications. The current study emphasized on the need for exposure control measures in the chromite ore mining activity areas.

Potentially Toxic Elements in Urban Soils from Public-Access Areas in the Rapidly Growing Megacity of Lagos, Nigeria

Rapid urbanization can lead to significant environmental contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs). This is of concern because PTEs are accumulative, persistent, and can have detrimental effects on human health. Urban soil samples were obtained from parks, ornamental gardens, roadsides, railway terminals and locations close to industrial estates and dumpsites within the Lagos metropolis. Chromium, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry following sample digestion with aqua regia and application of the BCR sequential extraction procedure. A wide range of analyte concentrations was found—Cr, 19−1830 mg/kg; Cu, 8−11,700 mg/kg; Fe, 7460−166,000 mg/kg; Mn, 135−6100 mg/kg; Ni, 4−1050 mg/kg; Pb, 10−4340 mg/kg; and Zn, 61−5620 mg/kg—with high levels in areas close to industrial plants and dumpsites. The proportions of analytes released in the first three steps of the sequential extraction were Fe (16%) < Cr (30%) < Ni (46%) < Mn (63%) < Cu (78%) < Zn (80%) < Pb (84%), indicating that there is considerable scope for PTE (re)mobilization. Human health risk assessment indicated non-carcinogenic risk for children and carcinogenic risk for both children and adults. Further monitoring of PTE in the Lagos urban environment is therefore recommended.

Effect of Soil Aggregate Separation Methods on the Occurrence Characteristics of Typical Pollutants

To study the distribution characteristics of typical pollutants in soil aggregates using different sieving methods, urban and arable soils were collected from Beijing and separated to different sizes by dry and wet sieving methods, to analyze present concentrations of inorganic chlorine and nine typical heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Pb). Results revealed that the distribution of wet-sieved aggregates was biased towards microaggregates (<250 μm), while the contrary result was found for the dry sieving method. Inorganic chlorine was more likely to be enriched in <53 μm fractions attained by both sieving methods. However, the content of inorganic chlorine in wet-sieved aggregates was significantly lower than in those that were dry sieved, which means the water’s effect on soluble ions was more pronounced. Heavy metals in urban soils were preferentially enriched in microaggregates no matter what kind of sieving method was applied. As for Mn and As found in agricultural soils using the dry sieving method, they were preferentially enriched in the fractions of 1000–2000 μm and 250–1000 μm, while the other seven heavy metals were preferentially enriched in <53 μm fractions, indicating that Mn and As in agricultural soils were easily transferred in aggregates with different particle sizes. Samples with particle sizes <53 μm showed the highest distribution factors for all heavy metals when the wet sieving method was applied. The dry sieving method resulted in a higher mass loading of heavy metals in coarser fractions and lower proportions in finer fractions. Results of a potential ecological risk analysis showed that the ecological risk (Eri) value of Cd found in aggregates by the different sieving methods was significantly different (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that different sieving methods could result in different occurrence patterns of pollutants in the soil aggregates of different land use types.

Effects of Different Particle Sizes of Hydroxyapatite on the Distribution and Migration of Trace Elements (Copper and Cadmium) in a Smelter-Impacted Soil

To study the remediation effect of hydroxyapatite with different particle sizes, a field in situ experiment was carried out by adding conventional hydroxyapatite (0.25 mm) and microhydroxyapatite (3 μm) and nanohydroxyapatite (40 nm) to the contaminated soil and planting Elsholtzia splendens. The distribution and migration of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) in soil were investigated after 4 years. The results show that the application of three different particle sizes of hydroxyapatite significantly raise the soil pH, total phosphorus, and soil organic carbon. Moreover, the addition of hydroxyapatite can reduce the EXC fraction of Cu and Cd by 73.7%-80.1% and 20.8%-35.2%, respectively. In addition, the concentrations of Cu and Cd in >2 mm, 0.25-2 mm, 0.053-0.25 mm, and <0.053 mm aggregate are significantly increased. This improvement indicates that there are risks which may cause the increasing of total Cu and Cd in the soil where the pollution sources still exist. Furthermore, the content of soil colloid is significantly increased, and the colloidal Cu and Cd distribution percentage have been significantly increased by 49.9%-120% and 30.3%-181%. This result illustrates that the application of hydroxyapatite may greatly increase the possibility of colloid and dust migration of Cu and Cd.

Health risk assessment via ingestion and inhalation of soil PTE of an urban area

Potentially Toxic Elements (PTE) are common soil contaminants and pose a significant risk to human health. In this study, ingestion (<150 μm) and inhalation (<10 μm) bioaccessibility and human health risk due to PTE were investigated in soils of the urban and peri-urban area of Torino. Lead, Cd, Cu, and Zn were observed to be the most soluble elements in simulated gastric and lung fluids. Higher bioaccessible concentrations of Pb, Ni, Co and Sb were observed in the inhalable size fraction (<10 μm) compared to ingestible one probably because of the higher concentration in fine soil size fraction. Conversely, the relative bioaccessibility of Pb, Cu, Cd, Zn and As was lower, due to the different extracting conditions and to the presumable different elemental speciation. Average values suggested that PTE would be more bioavailable if ingested than inhaled, particularly in urban areas, were the bioaccessible percentages were always higher than in peri-urban sites. Health risk assessment was conducted using bioaccessible concentrations and their corresponding toxicities via ingestion and inhalation exposures. Unacceptable non-carcinogenic risk (HQ > 1) was found through ingestion exposure for children in some urban sites and Pb was the most hazardous elements. Carcinogenic risks were under the threshold levels for every soil (CR < 10^-4), with Cr and As being the dominant contributors to risk. Therefore, necessary soil remediation activities are needed to reduce the risks of human, especially for children, exposure to Pb.

Chemical Fractionation, Environmental, and Human Health Risk Assessment of Potentially Toxic Elements in Soil of Industrialised Urban Areas in Serbia

The primary focus of this research was the chemical fractionation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and their presence in several industrialised cities in Serbia. Furthermore, their origin, contamination levels, and environmental and human health risks were assessed. The results indicated that the examined soils were characterised by slightly higher Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn levels than those set by European and national regulations. These elevated Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations were caused by intensive traffic and proximity to industry, whereas the higher Ni levels were a result of the specific geological substrate of the soil in the study area. The environmental risk was found to be low and there was no enrichment/contamination of the soil with these elements, except in the case of Pb, for which moderate to significant enrichment was found. Lead also poses a potential non-carcinogenic risk to children through ingestion and requires special attention due to the fact that a significant proportion of this element was present in the tested soil samples in a potentially available form. Analysis of the health risks showed that children are more at risk than adults from contaminants and that ingestion is the riskiest exposure route. The carcinogenic risk was within the acceptable limits.

Plant uptake and soil retention of radionuclides and metals in vineyard environments

In most European countries, each adult citizen drinks on average more than 20 L of wine every year. Three popular wine-growing areas (Aleksandrovac, Topola, and Orahovac) in Serbia were studied in order to investigate the abundance and uptake of elements from vineyard soil to plants. The specific activities of radionuclides (²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K, ¹³⁷Cs, and ⁷Be) were measured in soil, leaves, and grape berries. ²²⁶Ra and ²³²Th were positively correlated with silt and clay and negatively correlated with sand content in soil. Specific activities of natural radionuclides were also negatively correlated with soil pH and CaCO₃. Significant correlations of ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs with organic matter in soil were found. Concentrations of fifteen metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, K, Na, Ca, Mg, and Hg) were also measured in soil samples as well as in grapevine leaves. Analyzed soils were rich in Ni, Cu, Co, Cr, and Cd. High concentrations of Cu were probably caused by long-term use of Cu-based fungicides. Cu was correlated with Fe and organic matter content in soil. Soil-to-plant transfer factors (TF) were calculated to estimate the uptake of radionuclides and metals. Correlations obtained via PCA enable distinction between the sites Aleksandrovac and Topola relative to Orahovac. The first principal component (PC1) accounting for 30.70% of the total variance correlated significantly with soil pH (H₂O), contents of CaCO₃, Na, Ca, ⁴⁰K, and ²²⁶Ra in soil, as well as with ²²⁶Ra, Na, Ca in plants and TF_Ca. The second principal component (PC2), with total variance of 17.21%, was mainly correlated with variables pertaining to Mg, Co, and Cr in the soil and TF_K.

Soil PM10 emission potential under specific mechanical stress and particles characteristics

Soil can be resuspended in the atmosphere due to wind or mechanical disturbances, such as agricultural activities (sowing, tilling, etc.), producing fine particulate matter (PM). Agriculture is estimated to be the third PM₁₀-emitting sector in Europe, emitting more than the transportation sector. However, very few emission figures are available for the different cropping operations. Moreover, soil Emission Potential (EP) is extremely variable, since is influenced by factors such as humidity, texture, chemical composition, and wind speed. Due to their similarity to tilling emission mechanisms, Soil Resuspension Chambers (SRC) are the most suitable method to estimate the impacts of these factors on soil susceptibility to emit PM₁₀ during cropping operations (Emission Potential, EP). The main objective of this work is to assess the EP of different agricultural soils used for maize cropping in North-Western Italy, studying the influence of soil moisture and physico-chemical characteristics. Therefore, a SRC was developed, based on previous studies, with the goal of being relatively small, easy to operate and low-cost. Using the gathered data, a log-linear multiple regression model was developed to allow soil EP estimation from few physico-chemical parameters (moisture, sand/silt ratio and organic carbon content). The model allows to tailor field Emission Factors (EF) of specific cropping operations to different soil and moisture conditions and was applied to an EF for rotary harrowing, defined in a previous study. The concentration of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTE) in soil-emitted PM₁₀ was determined, founding an enrichment up to 16 times higher than in the original soil, evidencing a possible cause of concern for operator's safety during agricultural activities.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of clay fractions in soils developed from different parent rocks in Limpopo Province, South Africa

This study investigates the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of clay fractions in soils developed from different parent rocks in Limpopo Province, South Africa using the X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometry, Laser Ablation - Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrophotometry, Thermogravimetric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TGA-DSC) analytical techniques. Health risk associated with the presence of some trace elements was also investigated. The results revealed that the clay fractions had kaolinite as the dominant clay component occurring with other weatherable minerals. The crystallinity based on FTIR for the soil kaolinites correspond to partially - poorly ordered structures. The geochemical data showed appreciable accumulation of trace elements in the clay fractions. The absence of negative Ce anomaly in the chrondrite-normalised rare earth elements (REE) pattern in the clay fractions suggest the alteration of the primary minerals took place under suboxic conditions. The average non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI) were 1.52, 1.08, and 2.01 for children and 0.18, 0.13, and 0.24 for adults in the clay fractions from basalt, granite, and arkosic sandstone, respectively. The HI > 1 for children suggest non-carcinogenic health risk to children with ingestion pathway contributing the highest. The average carcinogenic risk index values were >10-3 for children and adults with respect to Cr, Ni, and Pb in the clay fractions. This suggests very high carcinogenic risk to children and adult population in decreasing order from clay fractions in arkosic sandsone > basalt > granite, respectively.

Study on soil physical structure after the bioremediation of Pb pollution using microbial-induced carbonate precipitation methodology

Soil structure is an important index to evaluate soil quality; however, previous researchers have only paid attention to the effect and economic benefits of soil heavy metal remediation. In this study, microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology was used to remediate soil Pb pollution, and its effect on soil structure was studied by sieving and X-ray computed tomography techniques. The results showed that the leaching amount of heavy metals in soil decreased by 76.34% after remediation. Interestingly, due to the addition of organic matter and microorganisms, the soil particle size changed from microaggregates to large aggregates, and the large soil particle size (diameter > 2 mm) increased significantly by 71.43%. The soil porosity increased by 73.78%, which enhanced the soil permeability and increased the soil hydraulic conductivity. Therefore, MICP bioremediation not only remediated soil heavy metal pollution but also promoted the soil aggregation structure, which has important significance for soil remediation and improvement.

Fractionation of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in Urban Soils from Salzburg, Thessaloniki and Belgrade: An Insight into Source Identification and Human Health Risk Assessment

Concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were measured in topsoil samples collected from parks in the cities of Salzburg (Austria), Thessaloniki (Greece), and Belgrade (Serbia) in order to assess the distribution of PTEs in the urban environment, discriminate natural (lithogenic) and anthropogenic contributions, identify possible sources of pollution, and compare levels of pollution between the cities. An assessment of the health risks caused by exposure to PTEs through different pathways was also conducted. The study revealed that, with the exception of Pb in Salzburg, levels of PTEs in the soils in polluted urban parks were higher than in unpolluted ones, but still lower than those recorded in other European soils. Results of sequential analyses showed that Al, Cr, and Ni were found in residual phases, proving their predominantly lithogenic origin and their low mobility. In contrast, the influence of anthropogenic factors on Cu, Pb, and Zn was evident. Site-dependent variations showed that the highest concentrations of As, Cu, Pb, and Zn of anthropogenic origin were recorded in Salzburg, while the highest levels of Al, Cr, and Ni of lithogenic origin were recorded in Belgrade and Thessaloniki, which reflects the specificity of the geological substrates. Results obtained for the health risk assessment showed that no human health risk was found for either children or adults.

Risks and phyto-uptake of micro-nano size particulates bound with potentially toxic metals in Pb-contaminated alkaline soil (NW China): The role of particle size fractions

The fate and risk in the environment of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) pollutants depends on the size-fractions of contaminated soil. In this study, the variable micro-nano size-fractions of 50-250 μm, 5-50 μm, 1-5 μm, <1 μm in long-term Pb-contaminated alkaline soil (NW China) were obtained by Sequential Wet Sieving Separation Procedure (SWSSP). The chemical speciation, mobility and risk of PTMs in micro-nano particle fractions as well as their uptaken and translocation in Maize (Zea mays L.) plant were systematically determined. The results demonstrated that higher accumulation of both investigated PTMs was observed in the fine fractions of <1 μm. The metallic Pb predominantly occurred in all size-fractions (65%-86%) identified by XPS, and the reducible forms of lead oxide (Ⅱ,Ⅳ) would also likely preferred to enrich in the fine fraction of <1 μm. The mobility and bioaccessibility of PTMs in fine fraction of <1 μm were higher than other fractions, which were identified by the multi-indices, enrichment factor (EF), accumulation factor (AF), mobility factor (MF), potential ecological risk index of single metal (E_rⁱ) and the comprehensive potential ecological risk index (RI). The scenario for phyto-uptake of Pb and Cu in <1 μm soil nanoparticles under pot tests indicated that the Pb and Cu enriched in <1 μm with high ecological risk were inclined to translocate into the Maize roots and shoots with nano size fractions. The results implied that further environmental management should be needed in order to prevent the risk of PTMs from Pb-bearing micro-nano size fractions in the industrial contaminated alkaline soil.

Discovering hidden spatial patterns and their associations with controlling factors for potentially toxic elements in topsoil using hot spot analysis and K-means clustering analysis

The understanding of sources and controlling factors of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils plays an important role in the improvement of environmental management. With the rapid growth of data volume, effective methods are required for data analytics for the large geochemical data sets. In recent years, spatial machine learning technologies have been proven to have the potential to reveal hidden spatial patterns in order to extract geochemical information. In this study, two spatial clustering techniques of Getis-Ord G_i* statistic and K-means clustering analysis were performed on 15 PTEs in 6,862 topsoil samples from the Tellus datasets of Northern Ireland to investigate the hidden spatial patterns and association with their controlling factors. The spatial clustering patterns of hot spots (high values) and cold spots (low values) for the 15 PTEs were revealed, showing clear association with geological features, especially peat and basalt. Peat was associated with high concentrations of Bi, Pb, Sb and Sn, while basalt was associated with high concentrations of Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, V and Zn. The high concentrations of As, Ba, Mo and U were associated with mixture of various lithologies, indicating the complicated influences on them. In addition, three hidden patterns in the 6,862 soil samples were revealed by K-means clustering analysis. The soil samples in the first and second clusters were overlaid on the peatland and basalt formation, respectively, while the samples in the third cluster were overlaid on the mixture of the other lithologies. These hidden patterns of soil samples were consistent with the spatial clustering patterns for PTEs, highlighting the dominant control of peat and basalt in the topsoil of Northern Ireland. This study demonstrates the power of spatial machine learning techniques in identifying hidden spatial patterns, providing evidences to extract geochemical knowledge in environmental studies.

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Heavy Metals in Arid Soils at the Catchment Scale Using Digital Soil Assessment and a Random Forest Model

Predicting the spatio-temporal distribution of absorbable heavy metals in soil is needed to identify the potential contaminant sources and develop appropriate management plans to control these hazardous pollutants. Therefore, our aim was to develop a model to predict soil adsorbable heavy metals in arid regions of Iran from 1986 to 2016. Soil adsorbable heavy metals were measured in 201 samples from locations selected using the Latin hypercube sampling method in 2016. A random forest (RF) model was used to determine the relationship between a suite of geospatial predictors derived from remote sensing and digital elevation model data with georeferenced measurements of soil absorbable heavy metals. The trained RF model from 2016 was used to reconstruct the spatial distribution of soil absorbable heavy metals at three historical timesteps (1986, 1999, and 2010). Results indicated that the RF model was effective at predicting the distribution of heavy metals with coefficients of determination of 0.53, 0.59, 0.41, 0.45, and 0.60 for Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn, respectively. The predicted maps showed high spatio-temporal variability; for example, there were substantial increases in Pb (the 1.5–2 mg/kg−1 class) where its distribution increased by ~25% from 1988 to 2016—similar trends were observed for the other heavy metals. This study provides insights into the spatio-temporal trends and the potential causes of soil heavy metal contamination to facilitate appropriate planning and management strategies to prevent, control, and reduce the impact of heavy metal contamination in soils.

Heavy Metals Contamination of Urban Soils—A Decade Study in the City of Lisbon, Portugal

There is an intense and continuous growth of the world population living in cities. This increase in population means an increase in car traffic, an increase in new constructions and an increase in the production of waste that translates into an intensive use of land, particularly in terms of soil contaminants. Among other environmental contaminants, toxic metals, such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) represent a public health problem. In this study the content of toxic metals in Lisbon’s (Portugal) soils was determined. The study was conducted over approximately a decade in six city locations, with a total of about 700 samples. Each site has different urban characteristics: traffic zone, residential area, urban park and mixed areas. The study allowed to verify the heterogeneity of metal content values in the city soils and their dependence on local traffic. Metal contents were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS). For each site the geo-accumulation index, pollution factor, degree of contamination, pollution load index and ecological risk factor were calculated. The mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb in soils were 0.463, 44.0, 46.6 and 5.73 mg/kg of dry soil, respectively. In the last year of the study the values were 0.417, 51.5, 62.4 and 8.49 mg/kg of dry soil, respectively. Cd and Ni exceeded the typical content values of these metals in the earth’s crust, indicating their anthropogenic origin. The correlation analysis revealed a significant correlation between Cr and Ni, Cd and Ni and Cd and Pb contents in the city soils. Regarding the results obtained in this long monitoring campaign, Lisbon’s soils can be considered as having low levels of pollution by these metals.

Bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals in soil, sediments and tailings from a north Africa phosphate-mining area: Insight into human health risk assessment

The risk assessment of phosphate mining/processing industrial activities on the environment and human health is crucial to properly manage and minimize the risks over time. In this work, we studied the inhalation and dermal bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals (PTM) in different particle-size fractions of urban soil, sediments and tailings from Gafsa-Metlaoui phosphate mining area, to assess afterwards the non-carcinogenic (NCR) and carcinogenic (CR) risks for the health of local citizens and workers constantly exposed to airborne particulate matter (PM) originating from these sources of contamination. Samples were separated in particle-size fractions by centrifugation and consecutive cycles of sedimentation and decanting. The pseudo-total concentrations and bioaccessible fractions of PTM were extracted by aqua regia and in vitro bioaccessibility tests, respectively. Both sediments and tailings showed higher-than-background concentrations of PTM (mainly Cd, Zn and Cr), with a tendency to accumulate these metals in fine particles (<10 μm). In urban soil, only Cd was above the background concentration. The bioaccessibility of PTM via inhalation was significantly higher in artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF) than in simulated epithelial lung fluid (SELF): basically, Cd was the most bioaccessible metal (relative bioaccessibility up to 80%), followed by the medium-to-high bioaccessible Zn (47%), Pb (46%) and Cu (39%), and the least bioaccessible Cr (16%). In synthetic skin surface liquid (NIHS 96-10), only Cd was bioaccessible at worrying extent (20-44%). On the basis of US.EPA risk assessment, the exposure to PTM bioaccessible fractions or pseudo-total concentrations would not cause serious NCR and CR risks for human health. Significant health risks (Hazard Index >1 and CR > 10^-4), especially for children, can occur if ingestion route is also considered. The findings underline the need for adequate protection of contaminated soil, sediments and mine tailings laying nearby urban agglomerates, to reduce the health risks for inhabitants and workers of Gafsa-Metlaoui mining area.

Soil particle size fraction and potentially toxic elements bioaccessibility: A review

In the last decade, extensive studies have been conducted to quantify the influence of different factors on potentially toxic elements (PTE) bioaccessibility in soil; one of the most important is soil size fraction. However, there is no agreement about the size fraction and the methods to investigate bioaccessibility, as very few review articles are available on soil PTE bioaccessibility and none addressed the influence of particle size on PTE bioaccessibility. This study provides a review of the relations between PTE bioaccessibility and soil particle size fractions. The available research indicates that PTE bioaccessibility distribution across different size fractions varies widely in soil, but a general trend of higher bioaccessibility in finer size fraction was found. The different elements may exhibit different relationships between bioaccessibility and soil size fraction and, in some cases, their bioaccessibility seems to be more related to the source and to the chemico-physical form of PTE in soil. Often, soil pollution and related health risk are assessed based on PTE total concentration rather than their bioaccessible fraction, but from the available studies it appears that consensus must be pursued on the methods to determine PTE bioaccessibility in the fine soil size fractions to achieve a more accurate human health risk assessment.

Heavy metal distribution in particle size fractions of floodplain soils from Dongchuan, Yunnan Province, Southwest China

The heavy metal pollution level in soils is heavily affected by the soil particle size distribution. However, the heavy metal loss during particle size extraction and the effect of calcite on the heavy metals removal in terms of the particle size are unclear. In this study, the distribution of heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, Pb, U, and V) was determined in five particle fractions (> 2, 2-0.25, 0.25-0.02, 0.02-0.002, and < 0.002 mm) of two soil and one sediment samples collected from the floodplain of Dongchuan, Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The sampled floodplain soils were mainly composed of gravel and sand fractions (> 97%). The concentrations of all nine heavy metals in the sampled soils and sediment increase significantly with decreasing particle sizes. The maximal loss rate of Cd and Cu reaches 54% and 8.6%, respectively, which should be considered in the process of particle size fraction extraction in soils. The removal amount and removal rate of heavy metals in solution by pure calcite ranks in the order of Pb²⁺ > Cu²⁺ > Cr⁶⁺, while the removal rate of Pb (93.13%) is much higher than that of Cu (24.56%) and Cr (10.71%), which increase with the calcite particle size decreasing. The stabilization of carbonate minerals in soils is crucial for heavy metal pollution control in floodplain soils with high carbonate concentrations in Dongchuan, China.

Geochemical fractionation and mineralogy of metal(loid)s in abandoned mine soils: Insights into arsenic behaviour and implications to remediation

Trace element contamination from abandoned mine sites is a major threat to the environment. The distribution of trace elements in various particle size fractions of soils from abandoned mine sites plays a critical role in designing remediation approaches. This study investigated the geochemical distribution of trace element enrichment and mineralogical composition in various particle size fractions from contrasting abandoned mine sites (Webbs Consols, Halls Peak and Mole River, Australia). Results revealed that arsenic and other element concentrations increased with decreasing particle size for samples from Webbs Consols and Halls Peak. The highest arsenic (3.05%), lead (3.23%) and zinc (1110 mg/kg) were found in the finest fraction (<0.053 mm). In Mole River, the highest concentration of arsenic (10.8%), lead (209 mg/kg) and zinc (351 mg/kg) were observed in coarse fractions. Arsenic fractionation by sequential extraction showed that arsenic was strongly associated with the amorphous and crystalline iron phases. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies revealed that tooeleite (a ferric arsenite mineral, also confirmed by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)), arsenopyrite, scorodite and arsenolite were the dominant arsenic minerals. The study showed elevated levels of arsenic bearing minerals across particle sizes which has significant implications for remediation approaches at abandoned mine sites.

Trace elements in two particle size fractions of urban soils collected from playgrounds in Bratislava (Slovakia)

Today, it is proven that the contaminated urban soils are hazardous for the human health. Soil substrates of playgrounds call for special research as they are places where children are directly exposed to soil contaminants. Therefore, the objective of this work was to measure the pseudo-total contents and bioaccessibility of several metals and metalloids (As, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, V, Zn) in two grain sizes (< 150 μm and < 50 μm) of playground soils in Bratislava city (the capital of Slovakia). The content of metal(loid)s in the soils was controlled by a number of factors, with their increased contents (above 75% percentile or higher) at sites influenced by point sources of pollution (industry and agriculture) or at old sites located in the city centre. Cobalt, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni and V had relatively uniform contents in soils compared to the other elements. As regression modelling with a categorical variable confirmed, the age of urban areas influenced the accumulation of As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb and Sn in playground soils. Exploratory statistical techniques with compositionally transformed data (principal component analysis, cluster analysis and construction of symmetric coordinates for correlation analysis) divided trace elements into the two main groupings, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, V and Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, Sn, Zn. Median concentrations of the elements in smaller soil grains (< 50 μm) were significantly higher than in coarser grains (< 150 μm). Cobalt, Cu, Mn, Pb, Sn and Zn had significantly higher bioaccessible proportions (% of the pseudo-total content) in < 50 μm soil size than in < 150 μm; however, the same order of bioaccessibility was achieved in both grain sizes. The highest bioaccessibility had Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn (~ 40% and more), followed by Co, As, Mn, Sb (18-27%), Hg, Ni, Sn (10-12%) and finally Cr, Fe and V (less than 4%). The hazard index and carcinogenic risk values were higher in < 50 μm than in < 150 μm and significantly decreased in the two soil sizes when the bioaccessibility results were included in the health hazard calculation.

Evaluation of particulate matter (PM10) emissions and its chemical characteristics during rotary harrowing operations at different forward speeds and levelling bar heights

Particulate matter (PM) is an air pollutant which poses a considerable risk to human health. The agricultural sector is responsible of the 15% of the total anthropogenic emissions of PM₁₀ (PM fraction with aerodynamic diameter below 10 μm) and soil preparation activities have been recognized as one of the main drivers of this contribution. The emission factors (EF) proposed by European environmental agency (EEA) for tilling operations are based on very few studies, none of which has been made in Italy. Moreover, few studies have considered the influence of operative parameters on PM₁₀ emissions during tilling. The aim of this work was to assess PM₁₀ emission and dispersion during rotary harrowing and to understand how operative parameters, such as forward speed and implement choice may affect PM release. A further objective was to assess the near field dispersion of PM₁₀ to address exposure risks. Emission factors (EFs) were determined during two different trials (T1 and T2). During T1, the effect of tractor speeds (0.6, 1.1 and 1.7 m s^-1) on PM₁₀ emissions was investigated, while in T2 a comparative essay was made to study the influence of levelling bar height on emissions. The average ground level downwind concentrations of PM₁₀ during harrowing operation was estimated through dispersion modelling. The observed PM₁₀ EFs for rotary harrowing were 8.9 ± 2.0 mg m^-2 and 9.5 ± 2.5 mg m^-2 on T1 and T2, respectively. The heavy metal content of soil-generated PM₁₀ was also assessed. In the generated PM, the elemental concentrations were higher than ones in soil. As, Cd and Ni concentration levels, determined in PM₁₀ near to the tractor path, were also high, being several times higher than the annual average regulatory threshold levels in ambient air, as defined by the European regulation.

Effects of soil particle size on the adsorption, distribution, and migration behaviors of heavy metal(loid)s in soil: a review

In recent years, toxic pollution from heavy metal(loid)s in soil has become a severe environmental problem worldwide. The migration and transformation of heavy metal(loid)s in soil have become hot topics in the field of environmental research. Soil particle size plays an important role in influencing the environmental behavior of heavy metal(loid)s in soil. This review collates and synthesizes the research on the adsorption, distribution, and migration of heavy metal(loid)s in soil particles. There is no unified method for soil particle separation, since the purposes of different studies are different. Regardless of adsorption or distribution characteristics, fine soil particles generally exhibit a higher capacity to combine heavy metal(loid)s; however, certain studies have also observed a contrary phenomenon, according to which heavy metal(loid)s were more enriched in coarser particles. The adsorption and distribution of heavy metal(loid)s in soil particles were essentially determined by the physicochemical properties of the soil particles. Land use obviously affected the distribution of heavy metal(loid)s in the soil particles. Organic matter had an important influence on the distribution and availability of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural and forest soils, while for urban soils and sediments, clay minerals or metal (hydr)oxides may play the dominant role. Preferential surface migration of fine particles during erosion processes did not always lead to the enrichment of heavy metal(loid)s in the lost soil. Further research should be conducted to explore the relationships among the soil aggregates, organic matter, heavy metal(loid)s, and soil microorganisms; the association between the distribution and availability of heavy metal(loid)s and the properties of soil particles; and the migration patterns of heavy metal(loid)s in soil particles at different scales.

Source patterns of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and mining activity contamination level in soils of Taltal city (northern Chile)

Mining activities are among the main sources of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the environment which constitute a real concern worldwide, especially in developing countries. These activities have been carried out for more than a century in Chile, South America, where, as evidence of incorrect waste disposal practices, several abandoned mining waste deposits were left behind. This study aimed to understand multi-elements geochemistry, source patterns and mobility of PTEs in soils of the Taltal urban area (northern Chile). Topsoil samples (n = 125) were collected in the urban area of Taltal city (6 km²) where physicochemical properties (redox potential, electric conductivity and pH) as well as chemical concentrations for 35 elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer. Data were treated following a robust workflow, which included factor analysis (based on ilr-transformed data), a new robust compositional contamination index (RCCI), and fractal/multi-fractal interpolation in GIS environment. This approach allowed to generate significant elemental associations, identifying pool of elements related either to the geological background, pedogenic processes accompanying soil formation or to anthropogenic activities. In particular, the study eventually focused on a pool of 6 PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn), their spatial distribution in the Taltal city, and the potential sources and mechanisms controlling their concentrations. Results showed generally low baseline values of PTEs in most sites of the surveyed area. On a smaller number of sites, however, higher values concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb were found. These corresponded to very high RCCI contamination level and were correlated to potential anthropogenic sources, such as the abandoned mining waste deposits in the north-eastern part of the Taltal city. This study highlighted new and significant insight on the contamination levels of Taltal city, and its links with anthropogenic activities. Further research is considered to be crucial to extend this assessment to the entire region. This would provide a comprehensive overview and vital information for the development of intervention limits and guide environmental legislation for these pollutants in Chilean soils.

Characterization of Cu distribution in clay-sized soil aggregates by NanoSIMS and micro-XRF

Aggregates are the basic structural units of soils. Fine soil aggregates are crucial pools for the retention of heavy metals. In this study, we evaluated the accumulation characteristics of exogenous Cu in the <2 μm aggregate fractions from a Histosol for an aging of 28 months by nano-scale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) and synchrotron micro-X-ray fluorescence (micro-XRF). Results showed that the correlations between Cu and Fe/Al/Mn increased from 0.10-0.17 to 0.55-0.63, while those between Cu and C decreased sharply from 0.61 to 0.10 and then increased to 0.36, indicating that exogenous Cu tended to accumulate on inorganic mineral components. The carbon NEXAFS data suggested that the relative content of aromatic and carboxyl carbon decreased from 8.1% and 30.8% to 3.6% and 17.8% at month 12, and increased to 5.9% and 26.0% at month 28, respectively. However, an opposite trend was found for alkyl and carbonyl carbon which showed an increase at month 12 followed by a decrease afterwards. The consistency for the correlations between Cu and C with the changes of aromatic and carboxyl carbon indicated their key roles in the binding of Cu on the organic components in the <2 μm aggregates of Histosol. These direct observations offer a better understanding on the interactions of heavy metals with various soil components which is critical for the risk assessment and fate evaluation of exogenous Cu in soil ecosystems.

Is Kragujevac city still a "hot spot" area, twenty years after the bombing?

After NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, UNEP has identified Kragujevac as one of the four heavily polluted environmental "hot spots". Damaging of industrial and military targets caused the release of substantial amounts of hazardous chemical substances into the environment. This study was conducted in order to access the exposure of residents of Kragujevac city to persistent soil pollutants, twenty years after NATO air campaign. The paper reports the results of measuring radionuclides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg) in soil samples collected from two depths (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm) at 30 locations along the riverbank of the Lepenica River. The average specific activities of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs were comparable to average worldwide values; excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) from natural radionuclides ranged from 1.1·10^-4 to 3.3·10^-4. The measured concentrations of As, Co, Cr, Cu, and Ni exceeded the limit values in most of the samples. Non-carcinogenic risk (hazard quotient and hazard index) and carcinogenic risk from heavy metals were assessed. Total hazard index was 0.257 and 2.16 for adults and children, respectively. Sum of measured PAHs ranged from 110 to 1026 μg kg^-1. Sum of PCBs exceeded the limit value of 20 μg kg^-1 in all samples (it ranged from 48.8 to 196.8 μg kg^-1), but it was still below the remediation level. The differences between two layers with respect to all measured variables were not statistically significant.

Root-induced changes in aggregation characteristics and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) speciation in a revegetated artificial zinc smelting waste slag site

Root-induced changes play a crucial role in influencing the fate and speciation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in contaminated soils, but their role in the phytostabilization of waste slag sites remain unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of four phytostabilization plants, Broussonetia papyrifera, Arundo donax, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Cryptomeria fortunei, planted in a zinc smelting waste slag site for 5 years on PTEs speciation and the mineral and aggregation characteristics at the interface of the waste slag-plant system. The results showed that the presence of a higher content of oxalic acid in the rhizosphere slags of the four plant species than in the bare slag. Revegetation of the waste slag with the four plant species significantly changed the mineral composition and morphology of the waste slag. The mass percentage of large particles (1-5 mm) and small particles (0.5-1 mm, 0.25-0.5 mm, and <0.25 mm) in the rhizosphere slags decreased and increased, respectively. The PTEs (Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd) in most of the rhizosphere slags were mainly distributed within the small particles, and the enrichment coefficients of PTEs in the large particles and small particles were less than and greater than 1, respectively. The bioavailability of the PTEs in the waste slag increased with decreasing particle size. Root-induced the transformation of acid-soluble PTEs into their reducible, oxidizable, and residual forms in the different waste slag particles weathered in the rhizosphere. These results suggested that there are root-induced changes in the aggregation characteristics and geochemical behaviours of PTEs in waste slag fractions during the phytoremediation of waste slag sites.

In vitro lung and gastrointestinal bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals in Pb-contaminated alkaline urban soil: The role of particle size fractions

Potentially toxic metals (PTMs), associated with different size particles in soil, may play an important role in adverse health effect and risk for human. The objective is to evaluate the lung and gastrointestinal bioaccessibility and risk of PTMs in Pb-contaminated alkaline urban soil depending on the particle size fractions. The size fractions of 50-250 μm, 5-50 μm, 1-5 μm, <1 μm in Pb-contaminated alkaline urban soil from Baoji Heavy Industrial Base City, NW China, were screened by Sequential Wet Sieving Separation Procedure (SWSSP) based on Stokes' Law. The concentrations of 9 potentially toxic metals (As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in each particle size fractions were characterized by ICP-OES and ICP-MS, and the in vitro bioaccessibility dependent of size fractions were evaluated by the simulation fluids of Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF) and Gamble for lung, PBET, SBET, IVG, SBRC, UBM for gastric and intestinal, respectively. Health risks were assessed considering simulated external exposure using intestinal and lung bioaccessibility. The lung and gastrointestinal bioaccessibility and exposure risks of PTMs in fine particle size (i.e. <1 μm) was higher than larger particle size fractions (i.e. 50-250 μm, 5-50 μm, 1-5 μm), however, some different variations of bioaccessibility observed the simulation fluids and time dependent. In case of single PTMs, the lung bioaccessibilities of PTMs in ALF were higher than those in Gamble fluids, most prominent in Co, Cu, Mn and Zn, while the gastrointestinal [G + I] bioaccessibility of PTMs was less than those in gastric [G], like Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn mostly. The non-carcinogenic risks of these PTMs to children via inhalation were acceptable and higher than those of adults, but reverse for carcinogenic risk. Comparatively, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of PTMs via ingestion pathway were both higher than those for adults. Although the risks from ingestion were in acceptable range, the total carcinogenic risks for children were more than 10^-4, which would bring carcinogenic risks and should be paid attention to. It was noted that the toxic metal, Co in all size fractions was the most important contributor for noncarcinogenic risks and Cr mostly for carcinogenic risks via inhalation pathway for adults and children in local areas. However, Pb was the most important contributor for noncarcinogenic risk both for adults and children via ingestion pathway relative to Co and Cr for carcinogenic risks through hand-to-mouth ingestion. Those observations demonstrated the important role that the smaller particle fractionations in Pb-contaminated alkaline soil played in both bioaccessibility and the refinement of human health-risk assessments for the inhalation and ingestion pathway.

Spa environments in central Serbia: Geothermal potential, radioactivity, heavy metals and PAHs

This study aims to estimate geothermal potential, radioactivity levels, and environmental pollution of six most popular spas in Central Serbia (Ovčar, Gornja Trepča, Vrnjačka, Mataruška, Bogutovačka and Sokobanja), as well as to evaluate potential exposure and health risks for living and visiting population. Thermal possibilities of the studied spas showed medium and low geothermal potential with total thermal power of 0.025 MW. Gamma dose rates in air varied from 63 to 178 nSv h^-1. Specific activities of natural radionuclides (²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K) and ¹³⁷Cs in soil were measured; annual effective doses and excess lifetime cancer risk from radionuclides were calculated. Radon concentration in thermal-mineral waters from the spas ranged between 1.5 and 60.7 Bq L^-1 (the highest values were measured in Sokobanja). The annual effective dose from radon due to water ingestion was calculated. The analyzed soils had a clay loam texture. The presence of As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Hg in soil was investigated. The concentrations of As, Cr, Ni, and Hg exceeded the regulatory limits in many samples. Soil samples from Mataruška spa were generally the most contaminated with heavy metals, while the lowest heavy metal concentrations were observed in Sokobanja. Health effects of exposure to heavy metals in soil were estimated by non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk assessment. Total carcinogenic risk ranged between 6 × 10^-4 and 137 × 10^-4 for children and between 0.1 × 10^-4 and 2.2 × 10^-4 for adults. The sum of 16 PAHs analyzed in soil samples varied from 92 to 854 μg kg^-1.

Effects of wheat straw derived biochar on cadmium availability in a paddy soil and its accumulation in rice

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of biochar amendment on cadmium (Cd) availability in a paddy soil with biochar amendment and its effect on the accumulation in rice. Biochar was applied once at rates of 0 (A0), 10 (A10), 20 (A20), 30 (A30), and 40 (A40) t ha^-1 on the soil surface layer (0-17 cm). Results showed that the soil organic matter (SOM) content and pH in 0-17 cm soil layer increased as biochar application rate increased, whereas the content of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and available iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), aluminum (Al) in diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) extracts declined with biochar added. Available Cd in DTPA extracts in the 0-17 and 17-29 cm soil layer of A40 treatments was significantly lower (p < 0.05) by 49.4 and 51.7% than that in A0. Compared with A0, the distribution factor (DF) of DTPA extracted Cd in the 0.053-0.25 mm and <0.053 mm aggregates of A40 treatments increased by 136 and 269%, respectively, and the DF values in these micro-aggregates of A40 treatments were greater than 1.0. Based on European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction results, 40 t ha^-1 rate of applied biochar reduced the proportion of acid extractable Cd fractions in both 0-17 and 17-29 cm soil layers, but increased the Cd in the oxidizable and residual fractions. The Cd concentration in the rice plants of different biochar treatments was in the order of A0>A10 > A20 > A30 > A40. DTPA extractable Cd concentration in soil was the key factor affecting the Cd uptake by rice roots. In conclusion, biochar application at 40 t ha^-1 can effectively reduce the availability of Cd in soil profile, enhance the available Cd enrichment in micro-aggregates, and thus limit the Cd uptake by rice.

The Suitability of Short Rotation Coppice Crops for Phytoremediation of Urban Soils

This experiment was aimed at verifying the usefulness of phytoremediation using Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) in an urban Zn-contaminated site. Besides elemental uptake and reclamation, the SRC method was applied to evaluate the additional benefits of a green infrastructure. Nine different plants with rapid growth and large biomass production were selected: three Populus clones, three Salix hybrids, and three Robinia genotypes. Annual and biennial coppicing were evaluated. Poplar clones were more productive using annual coppicing, while Salix and Robinia produced higher biomass in blocks not coppiced. Poplar had the highest phytoextraction rate during the second year, with 1077 g/ha. Salix clones S1 and S3 extracted similar quantities using biennial coppicing. After two years, the bioavailable fraction of Zn decreased significantly using all species, from the 26% decrease of Robinia to the 36% decrease of Salix. The short rotation coppice method proved to be useful in an urban context, for both landscape and limiting the access to the contaminated area. Improving the biomass yield through the phytomanagement options (fertilization, irrigation, coppicing, etc.) could make SRC phytoremediation an economic and effective solution to manage urban contaminated areas, coupling the added values of biomass production to the landscape benefits.

Characterization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) source profiles in urban PM2.5 fugitive dust: A large-scale study for 20 Chinese cites

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in road dust (RD) and construction dust (CD) in PM_2.5 were quantified in the samples collected in 20 Chinese cities. The PAHs profiles in urban PM_2.5 fugitive dusts were determined and their potential health risks were evaluated. Seven geographical regions in China were identified as northwest China (NWC), the North China Plain (NCP), northeast China (NEC), central China (CC), south China (SC), southwest China (SWC), and east China (EC). The overall average concentrations of total quantified PAHs (ΣPAHs) were 23.2 ± 18.9 and 22.8 ± 29.6 μg·g^-1 in RD and CD of PM_2.5, indicating that severe PAHs pollution to urban fugitive dusts in China. The differences of ΣPAHs between RD and CD were minor in northern and central regions of China but much larger in southern and east regions. The ƩPAHs for RD displayed a pattern of "high in northern and low in southern", and characterized by large abundance of high molecular weights (HMWs) PAHs, indicating that vehicle emission was the predominant pollution origin. Additionally, higher diagnostic ratios of fluoranthene/(fluoranthene + pyrene) in NCP, CC, and SWC suggest critical contributions of biomass burning and coal combustion for RD in these areas. In comparison, gasoline combustion was the major pollution source for CD PAHs in NWC, NCP, NEC, and CC, whereas industrial emissions such as cement production and iron smelting had strong impacts in the heavy industrial regions. The total benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) carcinogenic potency concentrations (BaP_TEQ) for RD and CD both showed the lowest in SC (0.05 and 0.07, respectively) and the highest in NCP (10.99 and 7.67, respectively). The highest and lowest incremental life cancer risks (ILCR) were found in NCP and SC, coinciding with the spatial distributions of ambient PAHs levels. The total CD-related cancer risks for adults and children (~10^-4) suggest high potential health risks in NCP, SWC, and NWC, whereas the evaluated values in EC and SC indicate virtual safety (≤10^-6).

Levels and human health risk assessment of heavy metals in surface soil of public parks in Southern Ghana

This study evaluates the extent to which humans may be exposed to health risk from heavy metals in surface soils of public parks in Southern Ghana during outdoor activities. The study investigated surface soils of 56 public parks from seven metropolitan cities in Southern Ghana. Heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined using microwave-assisted HNO₃-HF acid digestion and atomic absorption spectroscopy with flame, graphite furnace, and cold vapor options. All parks studied registered the presence of heavy metals with mean concentrations following the order: Mn > Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cd > Hg. Whereas the mean concentrations of Zn (221.92 mg/kg) and Cr (107.01 mg/kg) respectively exceeded the Canadian (200 mg/kg; 64 mg/kg) and the EU (100-200 mg/kg; 50-100 mg/kg) standards, the ranges of Cu (14.27-138.85 mg/kg) and Pb (6.46-628.31 mg/kg) also exceeded their EU range of 50-100 mg/kg. The results indicated that there was no immediate risk to Ni and Hg on the public parks studied; however, Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, and Cr may pose some adverse effects as they exceed their respective guideline limits in soil. The ranges of non-carcinogenic risk for adults and children were 0.0186-0.0787 and 0.0197-0.0850 respectively while the corresponding ranges for carcinogenic risks were 3.75 × 10^-7-1.28 × 10^-6 and 4.17 × 10^-7-1.31 × 10^-6. Even though risk assessment suggested low and acceptable health risk levels to patrons, there is the need for close monitoring since Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, and Cr have shown tendency of accumulating beyond acceptable limit.

Urban soil geochemistry of an intensively developing Siberian city: A case study of Tyumen, Russia

Complex studies of soil cover within the urbanized areas represent one of the main research directions in environmental geochemistry. Urban soil geochemistry depends on a combination of natural and urbanization factors unique to each urban environment. Although Tyumen, in Western Siberia, is an intensively developing urban city, a detailed geochemical survey of its soils has never been performed. In this study, we conducted a systematic geochemical soil survey across the urbanized area of Tyumen, Russian Federation. Surface soil samples (0-10 cm) were collected from 241 sampling sites: 1 × 1 km regular grid for highly urbanized areas, and 4 × 4 km grid for peripheral parts of the city. The contents of V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, and Pb were determined using XRF analysis. Data were interpreted using GIS and multivariate statistical analyses, including hierarchical cluster analysis and principal components analysis. The results showed a non-uniform spatial distribution of individual metals, associated with natural soil-lithological conditions and urban environment characteristics. Our data showed that variation in soil element content was origin dependent: V, Cr, and Co contents were related to their natural origin; As and Pb to their anthropogenic origin; and Ni, Cu, and Zn to their mixed origin. Elevated V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn contents correlated with proximity to motorway networks and machinery. Strong As and Pb anomalies were associated with the activity of battery enterprises. The spatial distribution of Sr was significantly different from other studied elements - anomalous content of this metal was confined to hydromorphic boggy landscapes of the city's northern part. In general, Tyumen territory was slightly polluted with metals. Zn and Pb contents were slightly lower than in most cities with similar population levels, while those of V and Co were higher. Other metal contents were comparable to those in large cities, with a long history of industrial development. Elevated Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, As, Pb, and Co contents were observed in areas that developed during mid last century.

Spatial Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Soil Pollution by Heavy Metals in Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria

BACKGROUND

Soil pollution by heavy metals in urban areas is of major concern to city planners and policy makers because of the potential threat to human health. Hence, an investigation of soil pollution is crucial to urban environmental assessment and management.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the spatial distribution and health risk assessment of seven heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)) around Ijebu-ode, southwest Nigeria.

METHODS

Surface soil samples were analyzed for Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn levels using standard procedures. Geographic information system (GIS) data, pollution indices (enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index), and the health risk assessment model, respectively, were used to analyze the spatial distribution, pollution level, and potential health risk of heavy metals.

RESULTS

Low pH was observed in the urban soils. The average concentrations of the seven heavy metals investigated were in order of Zn > Pb > Mn > Cu > Cd > Ni > Cr. There was high spatial variation in the distribution patterns of the heavy metals. The cancer risks for Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn for children (1.50 × 10^-3 - 2.71 × 10^-2) and Mn, Pb, and Zn for adults (7.89 × 10^-4 - 2.97 × 10^-3) were higher than the acceptable range of 1 × 10^-6 - 1 × 10^-4.

CONCLUSIONS

Anthropogenic activities from different urban land uses contribute to the pollution levels and spatial distribution of heavy metals in soils. Increasing pollution of urban soil may contribute to the occurrence of some health risk for residents in the study area.
