The effects of trophic transfer and environmental factors on microplastic uptake by plaice, Pleuronectes plastessa, and spider crab, Maja squinado

Temporal distribution of microplastics and other anthropogenic particles in four marine species from the Atlantic coast (France)

The characterization of microplastic (MP) contamination in marine species is increasing as concerns about environmental and food safety are more and more discussed. Here, we reported a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the contamination by anthropogenic particles (from visual sorting; AP) and MP (plastic-made) in the whole soft body or digestive tract of marine species. Four commercial species were studied, namely the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas), the spiny spider crab (Maja sp.), the common sole (Solea solea) and seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax or punctatus). AP and MP uptake were studied over three to four seasons depending on the species. After tissues digestion, particles were extracted under a stereomicroscope and morphometric characteristics were reported. Then, polymers were identified by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Seasonal variations were mainly described in the Pacific oyster as AP uptake was lower in autumn and MP uptake was higher in spring. These variations may be linked to the reproduction and growth cycles of this species. Moreover, seabass ingestion was lower in autumn compared to winter. Contamination in spider crabs and soles showed either weak or no seasonal trends, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Overall, AP contamination in all studied species ranged from 1.17 ± 1.89 AP.ind-1 (in sole) to 4.07 ± 6.69 AP.ind-1 (in seabass) while MP contamination ranged from 0.10 ± 0.37 MP.ind-1 (in sole) to 1.09 ± 3.06 MP.ind-1 (in spider crab). Fibers were mostly reported in all species (at least 77.7%), along with cellulosic polymers (at least 43.7%). AP and MP uptake were detected in all species and at almost all seasons, with the only exception of the common sole during autumn. Therefore, this study emphasizes the ubiquity of AP and MP contamination in marine species and provides new knowledges about seasonal uptake by commercial species.

Understanding and addressing microplastic pollution: Impacts, mitigation, and future perspectives

Improper disposal of household and industrial waste into water bodies has transformed them into de facto dumping grounds. Plastic debris, weathered on beaches degrades into micro-particles and releases chemical additives that enter the water. Microplastic contamination is documented globally in both marine and freshwater environments, posing a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. The small size of these particles makes them susceptible to ingestion by low trophic fauna, a trend expected to escalate. Ingestion leads to adverse effects like intestinal blockages, alterations in lipid metabolism, histopathological changes in the intestine, contributing to the extinction of vulnerable species and disrupting ecosystem balance. Notably, microplastics (MPs) can act as carriers for pathogens, potentially causing impaired reproductive activity, decreased immunity, and cancer in various organisms. Studies have identified seven principal sources of MPs, including synthetic textiles (35%) and tire abrasion (28%), highlighting the significant human contribution to this pollution. This review covers various aspects of microplastic pollution, including sources, extraction methods, and its profound impact on ecosystems. Additionally, it explores preventive measures, aiming to guide researchers in selecting techniques and inspiring further investigation into the far-reaching impacts of microplastic pollution, fostering effective solutions for this environmental challenge.

Comprehensive risk assessment of microplastics in tidal channel sediments in amazonian mangroves (northern Brazil)

Pollution by microplastics (MPs) in mangroves is a growing concern, given its potential ecological and human health impacts. The characteristics of microplastic pollution and a risk assessment of MPs in the Amazon region's coastal sediments are still insufficient, and information about MP pollution in the benthic component of the mangrove ecosystem is lacking. We analyzed MP concentrations in the surface sediment of 9 stations in three tidal channels along the Ajuruteua Peninsula connected to the Caeté River estuary, aiming to assess the hazard level on the environment based on the Pollution Load Index (PLI). Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy determined the MP's chemical composition. The results showed that the abundance of sediment MPs ranged from 100 to 1200 items kg-1, with an average of 433 ± 261.6 items kg-1. The MPs were mainly composed of transparent and blue fragments and fibers, ranging in size from 100 to 5000 μm. Six types of polymers were identified, including alkyd varnish (AV), resin dispersion (RD), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), polyethylene-polypropylene (PE-PP), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and hostaperm blue (HB). Hydrodynamic processes within estuaries and tidal channels play a crucial role in explaining the concentrations found, as circulation determines the pattern of sediment deposition and the particles adhered to it. PLI risk assessment showed that all sampling sites were at hazard level I: a low level of contamination in the mangrove sediments. However, a more comprehensive and systematic monitoring campaign is needed to expand our knowledge about pollution and contamination by MPs in Amazon mangrove areas.

Unveiling the Tiny Invaders: A deep dive into microplastics in shrimp - Occurrence, detection and unraveling the ripple effects

Aquaculture is a rapidly expanding food sector worldwide; it is the farming of fish, shellfish, and other marine organisms. Microplastics (MPs) are small pieces of plastic with a diameter of less than 5 mm that end up in the marine environment. MPs are fragments of large plastics that take years to degrade but can frustrate into small pieces, and some commercially available MPs are used in the production of toothpaste, cosmetics, and aircraft. MPs are emerging contaminants; they are ingested by marine species. These MPs have effects on marine species such as growth retardation and particle translocation to other parts of the body. Recently, MPs accumulation has been observed in shrimps, as well as in a wide range of other scientific reports. So, in this study, we review the presence, accumulation, and causes of MPs in shrimp. These plastics can trophic transfer to other organisms, changes in plastic count, effects on the marine environment, and impacts of MPs on human health were also discussed. It also improves our understanding of the importance of efficient plastic waste management in the ocean, as well as the impact of MPs on marine biota and human health.

A comprehensive review on the source, ingestion route, attachment and toxicity of microplastics/nanoplastics in human systems

Microplastics (MPs)/nanoplastics (NPs) are widely found in the natural environment, including soil, water and the atmosphere, which are essential for human survival. In the recent years, there has been a growing concern about the potential impact of MPs/NPs on human health. Due to the increasing interest in this research and the limited number of studies related to the health effects of MPs/NPs on humans, it is necessary to conduct a systematic assessment and review of their potentially toxic effects on human organs and tissues. Humans can be exposed to microplastics through ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact, however, ingestion and inhalation are considered as the primary routes. The ingested MPs/NPs mainly consist of plastic particles with a particle size ranging from 0.1 to 1 μm, that distribute across various tissues and organs within the body, which in turn have a certain impact on the nine major systems of the human body, especially the digestive system and respiratory system, which are closely related to the intake pathway of MPs/NPs. The harmful effects caused by MPs/NPs primarily occur through potential toxic mechanisms such as induction of oxidative stress, generation of inflammatory responses, alteration of lipid metabolism or energy metabolism or expression of related functional factors. This review can help people to systematically understand the hazards of MPs/NPs and related toxicity mechanisms from the level of nine biological systems. It allows MPs/NPs pollution to be emphasized, and it is also hoped that research on their toxic effects will be strengthened in the future.

Microplastics occurrence in commercial crab (Portunus segnis) from the western coast of India and pollution indices: First investigation and evidence

Microplastic (MP) pollution has increased drastically due to improper plastic waste management. The present study aimed to investigate the MPs contamination in the commercially important brachyuran crab Portunus segnis of Gujarat State, India. One hundred fifty crab specimens were collected from three principal fishing harbors in Gujarat. The collected specimens were analyzed for MP extraction using a previously documented protocol. The chemical composition of extracted MPs was assessed with ATR-FTIR. The average abundance of MPs contamination was recorded as 0.82 ± 0.58 MPs/g and 2.02 ± 1.48 MPs/individual. Findings of Contamination Factor (CF) revealed that study site Jakhau was identified as a low-contamination site, while Okha and Veraval were considered moderately contaminated. The H index has identified study sites Jakhau and Veraval as class IV risk categories, while study site Okha fell into the class V risk category. PRI value revealed the very high contamination of MPs in all the study sites. The guts were recorded as being more contaminated with MPs than the gills. The average abundance of MP contamination in males (0.77 ± 0.14 MPs/g in Jakhau, 1.19 ± 0.77 MPs/g in Okha, and 0.82 ± 0.43 MPs/g in Veraval) was recorded higher than in females (0.33 ± 0.11 MPs/g in Jakhau, 0.8 ± 0.49 MPs/g in Okha, and 0.75 ± 0.41 MPs/g in Veraval) in all the study sites. The average abundance of MP contamination varied significantly between males and females. Fibers were found dominantly in all study sites, followed by fragments, films, and foams. Black and blue-colored MPs with 1-2 mm sizes were found more abundantly. The chemical composition of the extracted MPs revealed polyethylene, nylon, polyurethane, and polystyrene as polymer compositions. Overall, the present study highlighted the MP contamination in commercially important crabs that can be used as a basis for further studies on ecotoxicology and seafood safety.

Influence of marine habitat on microplastic prevalence in forage fish and salmon in the Salish Sea

Microplastics are increasingly prevalent in marine systems and are a growing concern as a marine pollutant and contaminant with consequences for high trophic level consumers, including humans. Given evidence that links plastics to degraded ecosystem functioning and organismal health, there is increased interest in understanding the prevalence, fate and consequences of marine plastics. Microplastics contain and absorb harmful chemicals which may serve as endocrine disruptors and have negative implications for growth, reproductive health, and longevity. To expand current knowledge on microplastics in coastal marine ecosystems and the potential for biomagnification in marine food webs, we conducted stomach analyses of microplastics in Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) and Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes personatus), an important prey for salmon. Prevalence of microplastics was substantial; 77 % of all salmon and 25 % of all sand lance stomachs contained at least one microplastic. Fish were sampled at multiple sites throughout the inland Salish Sea, including beaches and sediment bedforms for Pacific sand lance and open-water pelagic habitat for Pacific salmon. Pacific sand lance sampled at beach sites had more microplastics compared to those sampled in subtidal sediments and there were more plastics in sand lance at a protected beach site as compared to an exposed beach site. Prevalence of plastics in salmon differed according to species and included analyses of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), and Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch); plastics were predominantly fibers in all species, though there were relatively higher rates of ingestion of films and particles in Chinook. Comparisons between plastic concentrations and stomach fullness indicated a slight negative trend, suggesting that plastics may be retained. Further investigation is needed to develop a more thorough understanding of the prevalence and fate of microplastics in coastal marine systems such as the Salish Sea, their concentration within marine food webs, and the implications for species targeted in fisheries.

Biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and genotoxicity to assess exposure to micro- and nanoplastics. A literature review

The increased awareness about possible health effects arising from micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) pollution is driving a huge amount of studies. Many international efforts are in place to better understand and characterize the hazard of MNPs present in the environment. The literature search was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology in two different databases (PubMed and Embase). The selection of articles was carried out blind, screening titles and abstracts according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. In general, these studies rely on the methodology already in use for assessing hazard from nanomaterials and particles of concern. However, only a limited number of studies have so far directly measured human exposure to MNPs and examined the relationship between such exposure and its impact on human health. This review aims to provide an overview of the current state of research on biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and genotoxicity that have been explored in relation to MNPs exposure, using human, cellular, animal, and plant models. Both in-vitro and in-vivo models suggest an increased level of oxidative stress and inflammation as the main mechanism of action (MOA) leading to adverse effects such as chronic inflammation, immunotoxicity and genotoxicity. With the identification of such biological endpoints, representing critical key initiating events (KIEs) towards adaptive or adverse outcomes, it is possible to identify a panel of surrogate biomarkers to be applied and validated especially in occupational settings, where higher levels of exposure may occur.

How natural and anthropogenic factors should drive microplastic behavior and fate: The scenario of Brazilian urban freshwater

Brazil maintains its position at the top of the global ranking of plastic producers, yet recycling efforts have been incipient. Recent data reveals an annual production of approximately 14 million tons of plastic waste, not accounting for the surge in the usage of plastic masks and related materials due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, what remains largely unreported is that over half of post-consumer plastic packaging in Brazil is managed without any monitoring, and it remains unclear how this will contribute to the occurrence of plastic waste and microplastics in Brazilian freshwaters. This scenario requires the consideration of several other crucial factors. Studies have been carried out mainly in marine and estuarine waters, while data on freshwaters are lacking. Brazil has continental dimensions and the highest water availability on the planet, yet the demand for water is greatest in regions with medium to low supply. Many densely populated Brazilian urban areas face chronic flood problems, possess inadequate levels of wastewater treatment, and display inadequate solid waste management practices. Consequently, urban freshwater with tropical characteristics in Brazil presents an intriguing scenario and is complementary to the most commonly studied marine environments. In this study, we explore the nuances of pollution in Brazilian urban freshwater and discuss how various parameters, such as organic matter, suspended solids, temperature, and pH, among others, influence the behavior of microplastics and their interactions with organic and inorganic contaminants. Furthermore, we address how microplastic conditions, such as biofouling, the type of plastic, or degradation level, may impact their behavior. By analyzing how these conditions change, we propose priority themes for investigating the occurrence of microplastics in Brazilian urban freshwater systems under different degrees of human impact. Ultimately, this study aims to establish a network dedicated to standardized monitoring of microplastic pollution in Brazilian urban freshwaters.

ECOfast - An integrative ecological evaluation index for an ecosystem-based assessment of shallow rocky reefs

The degradation of marine ecosystems is a growing concern worldwide, emphasizing the need for efficient tools to assess their ecological status. Herein, a novel ecosystem-based ecological evaluation index of shallow rocky reefs is introduced and tested in the Aegean and Ionian Seas (NE Mediterranean). The index focuses on a specific set of pre-selected species, including habitat-forming, key, commercially important, and non-indigenous species, across a wide range of trophic levels (1.00-4.53). Data acquisition is conducted through rapid non-destructive SCUBA diving surveys to assess all macroscopic food web components (macroalgae, invertebrates, and fish). Two versions of the index, ECOfast and ECOfast-NIS, were developed, each applying a different approach to account for the impact of non-indigenous species. In our case study, the correlations between the two versions of the index and sea surface temperature, protection status, occurrence of carnivorous fish, and non-indigenous herbivores were assessed through generalized additive models (GAMs). The assessment assigned 93% (ECOfast) or 96% (ECOfast-NIS) of the sites to a moderate to bad ecological status, indicating an alarming situation in the shallow rocky reefs of the NE Mediterranean. Sites evaluated as poor or bad were characterized by extensive coverage of ephemeral macroalgae, absence or minimal presence of large indigenous carnivorous fish, and complete absence of one to three out of five invertebrate functional trophic groups. The community composition of macroalgae, herbivorous species, and carnivorous fishes differed between the 5 m and 15 m depth zones. Surface temperature and carnivorous fish occurrence were the most important tested predictors of the ecological status of shallow rocky reefs. The best GAMs showed that the ECOfast score declined with sea surface temperature and increased with the occurrence of carnivorous fish; ECOfast-NIS declined with sea surface temperature and the occurrence of non-indigenous fish and increased with the occurrence of carnivorous fish. The non-destructive and integrative nature of this approach, its speed of data acquisition and analysis, and its capacity to account for highly mobile predatory fish and non-indigenous species render the ECOfast index a novel, robust, and valuable tool for assessing the ecological status of shallow rocky reefs.

Microplastics, a Global Issue: Human Exposure through Environmental and Dietary Sources

Plastic production has grown dramatically over the years. Microplastics (MPs) are formed from the fragmentation of larger plastic debris by combining chemical, physical, and biological processes and can degrade further to form nanoplastics (NPs). Because of their size, MPs and NPs are bioavailable to many organisms and can reach humans through transport along the food chain. In addition to the risk from ingesting MPs themselves, there are risks associated with the substances they carry, such as pesticides, pathogenic microorganisms, and heavy metals, and with the additives added to plastics to improve their characteristics. In addition, bioaccumulation and biomagnification can cause a cumulative exposure effect for organisms at the top of the food chain and humans. Despite the growing scientific interest in this emerging contaminant, the potential adverse effects remain unclear. The aim of this review is to summarize the characteristics (size, shape, color, and properties) of MPs in the environment, the primary sources, and the transport pathways in various environmental compartments, and to shed more light on the ecological impact of MPs and the potential health effects on organisms and humans by identifying human exposure pathways.

Microplastic ingestion by common terns (Sterna hirundo) and their prey during the non-breeding season

Current evidence demonstrates the presence and persistence of microplastics in the marine food web. Seabirds are predators in marine ecosystems and are highly exposed to marine plastic debris through the food. The aim of this work was to examine the presence of microplastics in a long-distance migratory seabird, the Common tern (Sterna hirundo) (n = 10), and in their prey (n = 53) during the non-breeding season. The study was conducted in Punta Rasa, Bahía Samborombón, province of Buenos Aires, which is an important resting and feeding location for migratory seabirds and shorebirds in South America. Microplastics were found in all the birds examined. The occurrence of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of Common terns (n = 82) was higher than in regurgitated prey (RP) (n = 28), which is likely reflecting trophic transfer process. Almost all microplastics found were fibers and only 3 were fragments. Microplastics were sorted by color; transparent, black and blue-colored fibers were the most abundant plastic types. Characterization of the polymer type by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) revealed that cellulose ester plastics, polyethylene terephtalate, polyacrylonitrile and polypropylene were the most abundant types found in both the gastrointestinal tract and prey. Our results highlight the high levels of ingested microplastics in Common terns and in their prey, and reflect a concern in this important location for migratory seabirds.

Macroecotoxicological approaches to emerging patterns of microplastic bioaccumulation in crabs from estuarine and marine environments

Despite the increasing plastic discharge into the environment, few articles have dealt with the macroecological implications of microplastics (MPs) bioaccumulation on organisms. We performed a meta-analysis of MPs accumulation in true crabs and pseudocrabs worldwide and made use of macroecotoxicological approaches to know if: I) functional traits influence the bioaccumulation of MPs in the tissues of crabs; II) there is a latitudinal pattern of MPs bioaccumulation; III) there are tissues that can accumulate more MPs; IV) crabs can sort particles according to size, color, shape and type. Our results showed that functional traits influence the accumulation of MPs. Smaller crabs in size and weight and with shorter lifespans tended to exhibit more plastic particles. According to the environment, estuarine crabs from the intertidal and muddy substrates held more MPs. Also, burrowers exhibited significantly more particles in the tissues than omnivorous crabs. Besides, we recorded that crabs from low latitudes tended to exhibit more plastic particles, probably because of the mangroves' location that acts as traps for MPs. Non-human-consumed crabs accumulated significantly more MPs than human-consumed ones. Considering the tissues, gills were prone to accumulate more debris than the digestive tract, but without significant differences. Finally, colorless fibers of 1-5 mm of PA, PP and PET were the predominant characteristics of MPs, suggesting that crabs accumulated denser types but did not sort plastic according to color. These results indicate that functional traits might influence the accumulation of MPs and that there are coastal regions and geographical areas where crabs tend to accumulate more MPs. Analyzing MPs accumulation patterns with macroecological tools can generate information to identify the most affected species and define priorities for monitoring and implementing actions toward reducing plastic use globally.

The risks of marine micro/nano-plastics on seafood safety and human health

A considerable mass of plastics has been released into the marine environment annually through different human activities, including industrial, agriculture, medical, pharmaceutical and daily care products. These materials are decomposed into smaller particles such as microplastic (MP) and nanoplastic (NP). Hence, these particles can be transported and distributed in coastal and aquatic areas and are ingested by the majority of marine biotas, including seafood products, thus causing the contamination of the different parts of aquatic ecosystems. In fact, seafood involves a wide diversity of edible marine organisms, such as fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and echinoderms, which can ingest the micro/nanoplastics particles, and then transmit them to humans through dietary consumption. Consequently, these pollutants can cause several toxic and adverse impacts on human health and the marine ecosystem. Therefore, this chapter provides information on the potential risks of marine micro/nanoplastics on seafood safety and human health.

Microplastic load of benthic fauna in Jiaozhou Bay, China

The prevalence of microplastic pollution in the ocean has caused widespread concern. Many studies have focused on the occurrence of microplastics in the marine environment and organisms, but the fate of microplastics in the ocean is still unclear, and the factors affecting the distribution of microplastics have not yet been consistently concluded. The aims of this study were to estimate the load of microplastics in benthic organisms as a temporary storage and to analyze the factors affecting microplastic ingestion by benthic organisms. For the purpose of this study, the benthic organisms in Jiaozhou Bay, China, were collected quarterly and were divided into the following six groups: polychaetes, mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms, fish, and others. We concluded that the microplastic abundance in the benthos in Jiaozhou Bay was 1.00 ± 0.11 items/ind. (15.5 ± 3.5 items/g). The total load of microplastics in the benthic fauna in the bay with an area of 374 km² was estimated to be 36.4 kg. On an individual basis, the fish contained significantly more microplastics than the other taxa. Furthermore, the characteristics of the microplastics in the benthic organisms were mainly fibrous, black, polyethylene, and <500 μm in size. In addition, the microplastic ingestion by benthic organisms was regulated by multiple factors, including biological characteristics and the environment. The masses of the organisms, the ambient seawater and sediment, and the spatial variations all influenced the microplastic ingestion by the organisms. The results of this study demonstrate that benthic organisms are an important storage for microplastics as they transferred through the ocean, and they provide an unbiased comparison of microplastic pollution among multiple organisms and the relevant pollution factors.

First record of microplastics in the Gigantidas platifrons (Mytilidae: Bathymodiolus) and Shinkaia crosnieri (Munidopsidae: Shinkaia) from cold-seep in the South China Sea

The deep sea is considered the final sink for microplastics (MPs) pollution in marine environments. Despite MPs being consumed by many organisms, their presence in cold-seep organisms remains unclear. At cold seep site F in the South China Sea, which lies 1155 m deep, MPs were investigated in Gigantidas platifrons and Shinkaia crosnieri, both ecologically important species. Microplastics ingestion rates were 80.98 % and 81.25 % in G. platifrons and S. crosnieri, respectively. The average MPs abundance for G. platifrons and S. crosnieri was 2.80 ± 0.69 MPs/ind (2.20 ± 2.75 MPs/g) and 2.30 ± 0.27 MPs/ind (4.74 ± 3.08 MPs/g), with no significant difference between species. There were predominantly fibrous MPs ingested by cold-seep organisms, sized 500-1000 μm, blue in color, and polyethylene terephthalate and cellophane in composition. The results confirm the presence of MPs in cold-seep organisms in the South China Sea, providing further evidence that MP pollution exists in the deep sea.

MPs and NPs intake and heavy metals accumulation in tissues of Palinurus elephas (J.C. Fabricius, 1787), from NW Aegean sea, Greece

European marine waters are infested with plastic, with an average density of 1 plastic item in every four square-meters. Research relevant to MPs-NPs ingestion by wild decapods in European waters is limited, none of which regards the European spiny lobster. Totally 4102 plastic particles were extracted from the spiny lobster stomach tissues of both sexes. Out of the 63 samples analysed only three (4.8%) of them were found with no plastic particles. The range of number of MPs in stomachs was from 20 to 273 MPs individual^-1. The 98.3% were fragments. In total 3833 plastic particles were extracted from the gill tissues of both sexes. MPs were found in all samples (n = 50),99.2% of the detected particles were fragments. The MPs detected in gills ranged from 11 to 339 MPs individual^-1. The DLS method was used in order to evaluate the NPs presence. Nanoplastics were detected in 22.6% of stomachs and in the 48.1% of gills. A total of 43 polymer types were identified in both tissues. Also, our study assessed the accumulation of heavy metals at the edible tail muscle. Certain elements were detected above the EU's Maximum Residue Level, including arsenic. The present results are alarming and the potential human health implications could be serious.

Overviewing the Ground Reality of Microplastic Effects on Seafoods, Including Fish, Shrimps and Crabs: Future Research Directions

While plastics are already notorious for their accumulation in the environment, which poses environmental challenges, invisible microplastics (MPS) are an even greater challenge. This review focuses on consolidating the reports available on MP accumulation in edible marine and freshwater fishes, shrimps, and crabs. The reality as to whether MPs in these edible aquatic organisms are really a cause of high concern is questioned and discussed. While the entrails of aquatic organisms are reported to contain high levels of MPs, because these products are consumed after the removal of the entrails and gut area in the majority of cases, the MP threat is questionable. The existence of MPs in these aquatic sources is validated but their potency in harming humans, aquatic organisms, and other interlinked species is unassessed. To overcome the difficulty in tracing the movement of MPs in a bigger ecosystem, this review proposes laboratory-based pilot studies mimicking real-world conditions, which will help us to understand the kinetics of MPs in the food chain. The effects of MPs on human welfare and health are yet to be assessed, and this is another gap that needs attention.

Detection and characterisation of microplastics and microfibres in fishmeal and soybean meal

Aquaculture is an increasingly important source of nutrition for global food security, which is reliant on animal- and plant-based feeds. Anthropogenic particles, including microplastics and semi-synthetic cellulosic fibres, are prolific marine pollutants that are readily consumed by marine organisms, including small pelagic fish commonly used in fishmeal. Conversely, there is no indication plants can accumulate anthropogenic microparticles. We explore whether aquaculture feed presents a route of contamination for farmed fish. Commercially-sourced aquaculture feedstocks, including fishmeals and soybean meal, were processed (KOH digestion and ZnCl₂ density separation) and anthropogenic particles characterised using microscopy and spectroscopic methods. Both fishmeal and soybean meals contained anthropogenic particles, with concentrations ranging 1070-2000 particles kg^-1. The prevalence of anthropogenic particles in plant-based feeds indicates that the majority of contamination occurs post-harvest. Based on our findings, farmed Atlantic salmon may be exposed to a minimum of 1788-3013 anthropogenic particles from aquaculture feed across their commercial lifespan.

Large size (>100-μm) microplastics are not biomagnifying in coastal marine food webs of British Columbia, Canada

Microplastics (MPs) contamination in marine environments is of increasing concern, as plastic particles are globally ubiquitous across ecosystems. A large variety of aquatic taxa ingest MPs, but the extent to which animals accumulate and transfer MPs through food webs is largely unknown. In this study, we quantified MP uptake in bivalves, crabs, echinoderms, and fish feeding at different trophic levels at three sites on southern Vancouver Island. We paired stable-isotope food web analysis with MP concentrations in digestive tracts across all trophic levels and in fish livers. We then used Bayesian generalized linear mixed models to explore whether bioaccumulation and biomagnification were occurring. Our results showed that MPs (100-5000 μm along their longest dimension) are not biomagnifying in marine coastal food webs, with no correlation between the digestive tract or fish liver MP concentrations and trophic position of the various species. Ecological traits did, however, affect microplastic accumulation in digestive tracts, with suspension feeder and smaller-bodied planktivorous fish ingesting more MPs by body weight. Trophic transfer occurred between prey and predator for rockfish, but higher concentrations in full stomachs compared with empty ones suggested rapid excretion of ingested MPs. Collectively, our findings suggested the movement of MP through marine food webs is facilitated by species-specific mechanisms, with contamination susceptibility a function of species biology, not trophic position. Furthermore, the statistical methods we employ, including machine learning for classifying unknown particles and a probabilistic way to account for background contamination, are universally applicable to the study of microplastics. Our findings advance understanding of how MPs enter and move through aquatic food webs, suggesting that lower-trophic-level animals are more at risk of ingesting >100-μm MPs, relative to higher-trophic-level animals. Our work also highlights the need to advance the study of <100-μm MPs, which are still poorly understood and may need to be considered separately in ecological risk assessments.

Occurrence of microplastics in gastrointestinal tract of fish from the Gulf of Guinea, Ghana

Over the past decades, there has been a growing concern about microplastics pollution in global aquatic habitats and its potential impact on human health. This study was carried out to determine the presence of microplastics in fish of economic importance in Ghana. Microplastics were found to be abundant in all investigated samples, with 68 % of the fishes contaminated with microplastics and a total of 133 plastic items identified in the fish. The presence of fibers, black coloured particles, and microplastics in the size range of 0.5-1.0 mm was the most abundant in the samples examined. Three polymers specifically, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, and polyamide were identified in the study. The presence of microplastics in the fishes investigated may pose severe ecological and health concerns, and hence comprehensive policies targeted at preventing plastic pollution of Ghana's maritime environment is warranted.

Plastics in scene: A review of the effect of plastics in aquatic crustaceans

Plastic pollution in aquatic environments is present in all compartments from surface water to benthic sediment, becoming a topic of emerging concern due to the internalization, retention time, and its effects on aquatic biota. Crustacea with nearly 70,000 species, broad distribution and different roles in the trophic webs is a significant target of the increasing plastic pollution. At least 98 publications in the last 10 years report the impact of plastics in crustaceans, all suggesting that this taxon is at high risk for ecosystem disadvantage by plastic contamination loads. This review compiles the current knowledge on physiological effects (endpoints) by plastic contamination analyzed in crustaceans in the last 10 years, highlighting their use as model species for ecotoxicological tests, sentinels species and bioindicators. Plastic contamination analyzed in this review includes macroplastic, microplastic, and nanoplastic, in a wide variety of types. The studies were focused on 38 marine species with an economic interest in fisheries and aquaculture; 14 freshwater with a higher frequency in standard test species and 4 estuarial and 3 mangrove species with ecological interest. The publications reviewed were divided into studies describing plastic presence in crustaceans without reporting toxic effects and those with analysis of plastic toxicity. Publications describing the plastic presence in the organisms show that the ingestion in individual effects and food-web transfer in ecological effects were the most frequent endpoints. The publications that analyzed plastic toxicity through survival, nutrition-metabolism-assimilation, and reproduction in individual effects, and bioaccumulation in ecological effects were the most frequent endpoints. This review gathers the available information on the use of crustaceans as model species in environmental impact for toxicity screening and hazard assessment. Besides, identifying knowledge gaps will let us propose some future directions in research and the effects on target fisheries species which involves a possible effect on human health.

Effects of changing environmental conditions on plastic ingestion and feeding ecology of a benthopelagic fish (Gadus morhua) in the Southwest Baltic Sea

This study documents how the abundance of microplastics (<5 mm) in the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, relates to the changes of the fish diet during years with contrasting levels of anoxia for example following years of low or high major Baltic inflows (MBI). A MultiNet Maxi trawl and CTD were deployed annually to collect microplastic samples alongside oxygen, temperature, and salinity conditions. Microplastics were homogenously distributed both within the water column and across years. Gadus morhua diet shifted from dominantly benthic invertebrates (61 %) under oxygenated conditions to dominantly Sprattus sprattus (81 %) under anoxic conditions. The proportion of G. morhua with microplastics in their digestive tract increased when they fed on pelagic fish (38 %) versus on benthic invertebrates (15 %). The proportion of S. sprattus which ingested microplastics (~18 %) did not vary. As anoxia at depth is expected to increase due to climate change, microplastic ingestion by G. morhua will potentially increase.

Impacts of microplastics on scleractinian corals nearshore Liuqiu Island southwestern Taiwan

Seawater, sediments, and three genera of wild scleractinian corals were collected from four coral reef areas nearshore Liuqiu Island, southwestern Taiwan. Abundance, characteristics (sizes, colors, shapes, and polymer types), and enrichment of microplastics (MPs) in the corals, and their impacts on coral cover were determined. The average MPs abundances were 0.95, 0.77, and 0.36 item/g for Galaxea sp, Acropora spp, and Pocillopora sp, respectively. The MPs abundance was relatively higher on the coral surfaces than inside the skeletons, dominated by blue rayon-fibers, correspondingly observed in seawater and sediments. Large-size colorless MPs tended to be mis-ingested by Galaxea sp. (71%) compared with Pocillopora sp. (43%) and Acropora spp. (31%). The low hard coral cover (12.5%) observed at Yufu (L1) on the northeastern coastal zone nearby tourism center of Liuqiu Island where correspondingly associated with high MPs abundance in seawater (10 item/L), sediments (260 item/kg), and corals (0.60 item/g). Tourism induced sewage discharges and sailing activities significantly contributed to the MPs pollution, probably contributing to the loss of coral cover. High MPs enrichment in corals (EF_MP = 25-283) shows that the marine MPs pollution can critically threaten coral reef ecosystems. Fibrous MPs present inside the coral skeleton serve as potential indicator of MPs' impact on corals-with the dominance of textile-related rayon and polyester/PET microfibers in the coral reef zones. This study provided valuable information for coral conservation and coastal management.

Microplastics in decapod crustaceans: Accumulation, toxicity and impacts, a review

The presence of microplastics in the aquatic environment poses a serious threat not only to aquatic organisms but also to human beings that consume them. The uptake and effects of microplastics have been studied in almost all groups of aquatic organisms. This review details the different aspects of microplastics exposure in an ecologically and economically important group of crustaceans, the Decapods. A majority of Decapod crustaceans such as prawns, shrimp, crabs, lobsters and crayfish are consumed as seafood and play important roles in food chains and food webs. Numerous studies are available on the accumulation of microplastics in tissues such as the gills, hepatopancreas and gastrointestinal tract in these organisms. Experimental studies have also highlighted the toxic effects of microplastics such as oxidative stress, immunotoxicity and reproductive and developmental toxicity in them. This review also summarizes the ecological impacts and implications in human beings as well as lacunae with regard to microplastic uptake in Decapods.

Differentiation in the expression of toxic effects of polyethylene-microplastics on two freshwater fish species: Size matters

The built up of microplastic (MPs) remains is shaping a new aquatic habitat and imposes the necessity for research of the effects that these relatively new pollutants exert on organisms, environment, and human health. The purpose of the present study was to verify if there is a particle-size dependence of fish response to MPs. Thus, we exposed two freshwater fish species, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) for 21 days to polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) sized 10-45 μm and 106-125 μm. Thereafter, in the liver and gills tissues, biochemical and molecular parameters and the metabolic profile were examined. Ex-vivo characterization by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy exhibited increased concentration of 10-45 μm PE-MPs in the liver of the two fish species while 106-125 μm PE-MPs mostly concentrated in fish gills. The penetration of PE-MPs to fish and the induced oxidative stress triggered changes in lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and ubiquitination and furthermore stimulated signal transduction pathways leading to autophagy and apoptosis. The smaller PE-MPs were more potent in inducing alterations to all the latter parameters measured than the larger ones. Tissue response in both fish seems to depend on the parameter measured and does not seem to follow a specific pattern. Our results showed that there is no clear sensitivity of one fish species versus the other, against both sizes of PE-MPs they were exposed. In perch the metabolic changes in gills were distinct to the ones observed in liver, following a size dependent pattern, indicating that stress conditions are generated through different mechanisms. All the parameters employed can be suggested further as biomarkers in biomonitoring studies against PE-MPs.

Microplastics Risk into a Three-Link Food Chain Inside European Hake

Microplastics (MPs) are increasing in the marine environment as well as inside marine organisms, having an important effect on biological diversity. The trophic transfer of MPs was demonstrated under laboratory conditions, but this study is based on the analysis of preys found in stomach contents. MPs from Merluccius merluccius individuals caught in the Cantabrian Sea and preys inside their guts (blue whiting, and northern krill inside blue whiting) were analyzed. MPs with different chemical composition occurred inside every hake and their preys, with different damages, from aquatic life hazards with long lasting effects, to allergic skin reactions and respiratory irritation, not only for aquatic species and fishing resources, but also for humans through hake consumption. The similarity of MPs profiles from gills and seawater samples would support seawater as the main source of gill microplastics. The MPs profile of hake GIT was similar to that of hake preys inside. Despite the small sample size, the presence of MPs in all the tissues analyzed of hakes and their preys, together with the evidence of hazard compositions of some of them, highlights the need for policies and actions to reduce plastic and microplastic production and consumption.

Activities of Microplastics (MPs) in Agricultural Soil: A Review of MPs Pollution from the Perspective of Agricultural Ecosystems

Microplastics are emerging persistent pollutants which have attracted increasing attention worldwide. Although microplastics have been widely detected in aquatic environments, their presence in soil ecosystems remains largely unexplored. Plastic debris accumulates in farmland, causing serious environmental problems, which may directly affect food substances or indirectly affect the members in each trophic level of the food chain. This review summarizes the origins, migration, and fate of microplastics in agricultural soils and discusses the interaction between microplastics and the components in farmland from the perspectives of toxicology and accumulation and deduces impacts on ecosystems by linking the organismal response to an ecological role. The effects on farmland ecosystem function are also discussed, emphasizing the supply of agricultural products, food chain pathways, carbon deposition, and nitrogen cycling and soil and water conservation, as microplastic pollution will affect agricultural ecosystems for a long period, posing an ecological risk. Finally, several directions for future research are proposed, which is important for reducing the effect of microplastics in agricultural systems.

A Meta-Analysis of the Characterisations of Plastic Ingested by Fish Globally

Plastic contamination in the environment is common but the characterisation of plastic ingested by fish in different environments is lacking. Hence, a meta-analysis was conducted to identify the prevalence of plastic ingested by fish globally. Based on a qualitative analysis of plastic size, it was determined that small microplastics (<1 mm) are predominantly ingested by fish globally. Furthermore, our meta-analysis revealed that plastic fibres (70.6%) and fragments (19.3%) were the most prevalent plastic components ingested by fish, while blue (24.2%) and black (18.0%) coloured plastic were the most abundant. Polyethylene (15.7%) and polyester (11.6%) were the most abundant polymers. Mixed-effect models were employed to identify the effects of the moderators (sampling environment, plastic size, digestive organs examined, and sampling continents) on the prevalence of plastic shape, colour, and polymer type. Among the moderators, only the sampling environment and continent contributed to a significant difference between subgroups in plastic shape and polymer type.

Microplastic pollution in wild populations of decapod crustaceans: A review

Along with the increasing amount of plastic production and waste disposal, the presence of microplastics has been confirmed in all compartments of ecosystems. The microplastics in biota is of particular concern due to the potential eco-risks associated with long term exposure and the potential for transportation along food webs. Decapoda represents a diverse taxonomic group within the subphylum Crustacea, and some of which are highly valued in fishery and biological production. The interaction between microplastic pollution and wild populations of decapod crustaceans have been documented less than fish or bivalves but are critical to understand the fates of microplastics in marine eco-systems and enrich the baselines for consumption analyses. Our review systematically summarizes the occurrence, abundance and characteristics of microplastics detected in edible and non-edible sections of decapod crustaceans from field observations. Sub-groups between crabs and shrimps were also included for comparison. The occurrence of microplastics in the edible sections were less than those in non-edible sections, and there are differences between crabs and shrimps. Fibrous microplastics and items with a size category less than 1 mm were dominant pollutants across all available literature. The methodology selection, biological features and uptake pathways play roles in the microplastic body burden in Decapoda. Our work enriches the understanding of microplastic pollution in wild populations of decapod crustaceans but their contribution to the human exposure to microplastics needs to be addressed with more accurate measurements.

Occurrence of microplastics in commercial marine dried fish in Asian countries

The major risk of microplastics in marine environments is the bioaccumulation in marine organisms. Plastic ingestion by marine organisms has been investigated and recently more attention has been given to microplastics in seafood. However, it is seldom reported the occurrence of microplastics in marine commercial dried fish products available for human consumption. Here, we report the occurrence of microplastics in 14different marine dried fish products from seven Asian countries. Microplastics were observed in most dried fish, with fibers representing ~80% of the total-microplastics. The major plastic polymers, identified using Micro-Raman spectroscopy, included polyethylene (35%), polyethylene terephthalate (26%), polystyrene (18%), polyvinyl chloride (12%), and polypropylene (9%). The highest count, in either per individual (1.92 ± 0.12) or per gram of dried fish (0.56 ± 0.03), were found in Etrumeus micropus from Japan. Marine dried fish, which are typically eaten whole, may contribute to the ingestion of microplastics by humans, posing potential health risks especially in Asian countries. Further studies are needed to identify the occurrence of smaller sized microplastics and nanoplastics and their potential health impacts.

Potentially toxic elements and microplastics in muscle tissues of different marine species from the Persian Gulf: Levels, associated risks, and trophic transfer

Selected potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn, along with microplastic particles (MPs) were characterized in the muscle of seafood species in order to study potential health risk and also investigate biomagnification of the contaminants. The results revealed high levels of the analyzed PTEs and MPs in crustaceans. The cancer risk among the consumer population (adult and children) posed by As is higher than the acceptable lifetime risk of 10^-4. Portunus plagicus and Platycephalus indicus had the highest and lowest amount of MP particles in their muscles, respectively, among investigated species. Finally, PTEs (except Hg) and MPs are not biomagnified in the collected species. The results of this research emphasize the importance of accounting for health risks posed by potential pollutants via consumption of contaminated seafood.

Microplastic ingestion by the sandfish Holothuria scabra in Lampung and Sumbawa, Indonesia

This study investigated the abundances and characteristics of microplastics in sediments and sandfish (Holothuria scabra) in Lampung and Sumbawa, Indonesia. Microplastics were found in 89.02% of all sandfish samples, with an average abundance of 2.01 ± 1.59 particles individual^-1. The abundance of microplastics was 58.42 ± 24.33 particles kg^-1 in surface sediments. Furthermore, there was a positive relationship between the abundance of microplastics in sandfish and sediments. Fragments and fibers with small-sized microplastics (300-1000 μm) were the most abundant types found in sandfish and sediments. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis showed that polyethylene (30.08%), polypropylene (30.08%), polyurethane (12.20%), and polyethylene terephthalate (8.94%) were the most abundant polymers in the samples. Our results strongly indicate that microplastics in Lampung and Sumbawa originate from the fragmentation of large plastics. Better solid waste management in Indonesia is needed to reduce plastic waste leakage, which could become microplastics.

Microplastic pollution in coastal ecosystem off Mumbai coast, India

Microplastics (MPs) are anthropogenic pollutants which can adsorb toxic substances from surrounding water and absorb into the fish body. During the present study, MPs were observed in water, sediment, and gastrointestinal tracts of marine biota samples collected from the coastal waters of Mumbai, India. The mean abundances of MPs recorded in water samples 372 ± 143 items/liter and 9630 ± 2947 items/kg dry weight (DW) in sediment samples. The mean abundance of MPs in pelagic fish species varied from 6.74 ± 2.74 to 9.12 ± 3.57 items/individual and in the demersal species the values ranged from 5.62 ± 2.27 to 6.6 ± 2.98 items/individual. Shape-wise, four type of MPs were observed in the surface waters, sediments and all studied species, predominantly fibers, followed by fragments, pellets/beads, and films. Seven different colors of MPs (red, blue, black, translucent, brown, green, and yellow) were observed from studied samples. MPs of size below 250 μm formed the dominant size in the surface water, sediments, and biota samples except Bombay duck and Malabar sole fish. Based on Raman spectroscopy analysis, eleven types of plastic polymers identified from all studied samples. Thus, presence of MPs in studied biota indicates the transfer of MPs through interlinked food chain/web to higher trophic levels and the occurrence of MPs in the fish gut underlines the necessity of more studies on processing interventions for reducing the microplastic contamination in fish for human consumption.

Potential microplastics impacts on African fishing resources

Microplastic (MP) pollution is increasing worldwide and affecting aquatic fauna in different ways, which endangers current aquatic resources in a still unknown extent. MP-induced threats to marine fauna are critical for developing countries, where waste treatment may be not optimal and coastal communities rely heavily on marine resources for dietary protein. In this study, we assess the importance of MP pollution for African fishing resources. A new meta-database was created from published studies, containing 156 samples with more than 6200 individuals analysed for microplastic content from African and adjacent waters. A combination of research landscape analysis and rank analysis served to identify main research targets and to determine regional fishing resources especially affected by MP. A network of relevant terms showed fish health as a concern in Mediterranean waters, environmental pollution in freshwater and an emphasis on plastic items in South Africa. MP contents in fishing resources from Nile countries and the Gulf of Guinea, followed by Tunisia, are significantly higher than in other regions. Some of the most exploited species are among the most polluted ones, highlighting the threat of MP pollution in valuable but already compromised African fishing resources. Large geographic gaps with almost absent data about MP in aquatic fauna were revealed, especially in freshwater and in East African coasts. These results emphasize the importance of increasing the coverage of MP pollution in African fishing resources, and improving plastic waste management in the continent.

Battling the known unknowns: a synoptic review of aquatic plastics research from Australia, the United Kingdom and China

Plastic pollution is a global environmental and human health issue, with plastics now ubiquitous in the environment and biota. Despite extensive international research, key knowledge gaps ("known unknowns") remain around ecosystem-scale and human health impacts of plastics in the environment, particularly in limnetic, coastal and marine systems. Here we review aquatic plastics research in three contrasting geographic and cultural settings, selected to present a gradient of heavily urbanised (and high population density) to less urbanised (and low population density) areas: China, the United Kingdom (UK), and Australia. Research from each country has varying environmental focus (for example, biota-focussed studies in Australia target various bird, fish, turtle and seal species, while UK and China-based studies focus on commercially important organisms such as bivalves, fish and decapods), and uses varying methods and reporting units (e.g. mean, median or range). This has resulted in aquatic plastics datasets that are hard to compare directly, supporting the need to converge on standardised sampling methods, and bioindicator species. While all the study nations show plastics contamination, often at high levels, datasets are variable and do not clearly demonstrate pollution gradients.

Direct ingestion, trophic transfer, and physiological effects of microplastics in the early life stages of Centropristis striata, a commercially and recreationally valuable fishery species

Microplastics are ubiquitous in marine and estuarine ecosystems, and thus there is increasing concern regarding exposure and potential effects in commercial species. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of microplastics on larval and early juvenile life stages of the Black Sea Bass (Centropristis striata), a North American fishery. Larvae (13-14 days post hatch, dph) were exposed to 1.0 × 10⁴, 1.0 × 10⁵, and 1.0 × 10⁶ particles L^-1 of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) microspheres (10-20 μm) directly in seawater and via trophic transfer from microzooplankton prey (tintinnid ciliates, Favella spp.). We also compared the ingestion of virgin and chemically-treated microspheres incubated with either phenanthrene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, or 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP), a plastic additive. Larval fish did not discriminate between virgin or chemically-treated microspheres. However, larvae did ingest higher numbers of microspheres through ingestion of microzooplankton prey than directly from the seawater. Early juveniles (50-60 dph) were directly exposed to the virgin and chemically-treated LDPE microspheres, as well as virgin LDPE microfibers for 96 h to determine physiological effects (i.e., oxygen consumption and immune response). There was a significant positive relationship between oxygen consumption and increasing microfiber concentration, as well as a significant negative relationship between immune response and increasing virgin microsphere concentration. This first assessment of microplastic pollution effects in the early life stages of a commercial finfish species demonstrates that trophic transfer from microzooplankton can be a significant route of microplastic exposure to larval stages of C. striata, and that multi-day exposure to some microplastics in early juveniles can result in physiological stress.

Incidence of microplastics in gastrointestinal tract of golden anchovy (Coilia dussumieri) from north east coast of Arabian Sea: The ecological perspective

Anthropogenic marine litters or microplastics (MPs) accumulation in marine organisms is an emerging environmental threat. In this background, the gastrointestinal tract of Coilia dussumieri (n = 150) was studied in the samples collected from the fishing grounds of the north east coast of Arabian Sea through experimental fishing. Out of the total 150 specimens collected, all showed the incidence of microplastic particulates in the guts. The average abundance of MPs was found to be 6.98 ± 2.73 items/individual whereas gastrointestinal tract recorded with an average number of 28.84 ± 10.13 MPs/g in the gut material. The dominant MPs were found in the size range of 100-250 μm and of fibers type mostly blue in color. The prevalence of MPs in Coilia dussumieri is a matter of serious concern due to its ecological consequences due to trophic transfer in the connected food chains and probable threats to the health of human beings consuming the fish.

A One Health perspective of the impacts of microplastics on animal, human and environmental health

Microplastics contamination is widespread in the environment leading to the exposure of both humans and other biota. While most studies overemphasize direct toxicity of microplastics, particle concentrations, characteristics and exposure conditions being used in these assays needs to be taken into consideration. For instance, toxicity assays that use concentrations over 100,000 times higher than those expected in the environment have limited practical relevance. Thus, adverse effects on animal and human health of current environmental concentrations are identified as a knowledge gap. Conversely, this does not suggest the lack of any significant effects of microplastics on a global scale. The One Health approach provides a novel perspective focused on the intersection of different areas, namely animal, human, and environmental health. This review provides a One Health transdisciplinary approach to microplastics, addressing indirect effects beyond simple toxicological effects. Microplastics can, theoretically, change the abiotic properties of matrices (e.g., soil permeability) and interfere with essential ecosystem functions affecting ecosystem services (e.g., biogeochemical processes) that can in turn impact human health. The gathered information suggests that more research is needed to clarify direct and indirect effects of microplastics on One Health under environmentally relevant conditions, presenting detailed knowledge gaps.

A Bayesian analysis of the factors determining microplastics ingestion in fishes

Microplastic particles (MPs) occur widely in aquatic ecosystems and are ingested by a wide range of organisms. While trophic transfer of MPs is known to occur, researchers do not yet fully understand the fate of MPs in food webs. We explored the factors influencing reported ingestion of MPs in marine and freshwater fishes by conducting a literature review of 123 studies published between January 2011 and June 2020. We used Bayesian generalized linear mixed models to determine whether MP ingestion by fishes varies by Food and Agricultural Organization fishing area, trophic level, body size, taxa, and study methodology. After accounting for methodology, strong regional differences were not present, although ingested MP concentrations were slightly different among some FAO areas. According to the reviewed studies, MP concentrations in fish digestive tracts did not increase with either trophic level or body size, suggesting that biomagnification of MPs did not occur, although larger fish were more likely to contain MPs. Researchers reported higher concentrations of MPs in clupeids compared with other commonly studied taxonomic families, which could be due to their planktivorous feeding strategy. Methodology played an influential role in predicting reported concentrations, highlighting the need to harmonize methods among studies.

Abandoned Covid-19 personal protective equipment along the Bushehr shores, the Persian Gulf: An emerging source of secondary microplastics in coastlines

During the Covid-19 pandemic, personal protection equipment (PPE) was widely used to control the virus further spared. In this study, the presence of PPE wastes along the coastline of Bushehr port, the Persian Gulf from nine stations was investigated (4 times during 40 days), and their potential for microplastics (MPs) creation was preliminarily assessed. In total, more than 2380 PPE were collected in the study area. No significant differences were found between various beaches regarding their types and common activities. In addition, the estimated disposal rate of PPE per day and year is 350 and 127,750 items, respectively. More than 10% of the collected PPE from Bushehr's coastal areas on each sampling day were damaged. Based on the microscopic analysis, the left surgical masks and torn plastic gloves in the coastal regions are emerging sources of secondary microfibers and MP particles (mostly fragments and films) in the marine environments, respectively.

Microplastic and artificial cellulose microfibers ingestion by reef fishes in the Guarapari Islands, southwestern Atlantic

This study investigated the ingestion of microplastics and artificial cellulose particles by 103 specimens belonging to 21 reef fish species from the southwestern Atlantic. Specimens of six species had ingested microplastics and artificial cellulose particles, while those of another three species had ingested only one type of material. In our samples, man-made cellulose fibers were more common than microplastics. The tomtate grunt, Haemulon aurolineatum, ingested more particles than any of the other species. Overall, transparent particles were predominant, and polyamide was the most common plastic material. Household sewage, fishery activity, and navigation appear to be the principal sources of the artificial particles ingested by the reef fishes. Our results provide an important database on oceanic contamination by microplastics and artificial cellulose particles. Understanding this impact on tropical reef fish will contribute to the development of strategies to mitigate pollution by anthropogenic debris in reef systems.

Microplastic in angling baits as a cryptic source of contamination in European freshwaters

High environmental microplastic pollution, and its largely unquantified impacts on organisms, are driving studies to assess their potential entry pathways into freshwaters. Recreational angling, where many anglers release manufactured baits into freshwater ecosystems, is a widespread activity with important socio-economic implications in Europe. It also represents a potential microplastic pathway into freshwaters that has yet to be quantified. Correspondingly, we analysed three different categories of industrially-produced baits (‘groundbait’, ‘boilies’ and ‘pellets’) for their microplastic contamination (particles 700 µm to 5 mm). From 160 samples, 28 microplastics were identified in groundbait and boilies, with a mean concentration of 17.4 (± 48.1 SD) MP kg⁻¹ and 6.78 (± 29.8 SD) mg kg⁻¹, yet no microplastics within this size range were recorded in the pellets. Microplastic concentrations significantly differed between bait categories and companies, but microplastic characteristics did not vary. There was no correlation between microplastic contamination and the number of bait ingredients, but it was positively correlated with C:N ratio, indicating a higher contamination in baits with higher proportion of plant-based ingredients. We thus reveal that bait microplastics introduced accidentally during manufacturing and/or those originating from contaminated raw ingredients might be transferred into freshwaters. However, further studies are needed to quantify the relative importance of this cryptic source of contamination and how it influences microplastic levels in wild fish.

Microplastic pollution in wild commercial nekton from the South China Sea and Indian Ocean, and its implication to human health

Marine biota, especially commercially important species, serves as a basis for human nutrition. However, millions of tons of plastic litter are produced and enter the marine environment every year, with potential adverse impacts on marine organisms. In the present study, we investigated the occurrence and characteristics of microplastic (MP) pollution in the digestive tracts of 13 species of wild nektons from 20 stations sampled in the South China Sea (SCS) and the Indian Ocean (IO), and assessed the human health risks of MPs. The detection rate of MPs ranged from 0.00% to 50.00% from the SCS, which was dramatically lower than that from the IO (10.00-80.00%). The average abundance of MP was 0.18 ± 0.06 items g wet weight^-1 (ww^-1) in the SCS, which was significantly lower than that in the IO with a concentration of 0.70 ± 0.16 items g ww^-1. Most MPs were fibers in type, black in color, and polyester (PES) in polymer composition in both the SCS and IO. Interestingly, distinct profiles of MP pollution were found between the benthic and pelagic nektons: 1) The predominant MP composition was PES in the benthic nektons, whereas polyamide (PA) accounted for a larger part of the total MP count in the pelagic nektons within the SCS; 2) The abundance of MP in the benthic nektons (0.52 ± 0.24 items individual^-1) was higher than that in the pelagic nektons (0.30 ± 0.11 items individual^-1). Accordingly, the mean hazard score of MPs detected in the benthic nektons (220.66 ± 210.75) was higher than that in the pelagic nektons (49.53 ± 22.87); 3) The mean size of the MP in the pelagic nektons (0.84 ± 0.17 mm) was larger than that in the benthic nektons (0.49 ± 0.09 mm). Our findings highlight the need to further investigate the ecological impacts of MPs on wild nekton, especially commercially important species, and its potential implications for human health.

Microplastics in the Marine Environment: Sources, Fates, Impacts and Microbial Degradation

The serious global microplastic pollution has attracted public concern in recent years. Microplastics are widely distributed in various environments and their pollution is already ubiquitous in the ocean system, which contributes to exponential concern in the past decade and different research areas. Due to their tiny size coupled with the various microbial communities in aquatic habitats capable of accumulating organic pollutants, abundant literature is available for assessing the negative impact of MPs on the physiology of marine organisms and eventually on the human health. This study summarizes the current literature on MPs in the marine environment to obtain a better knowledge about MP contamination. This review contains three sections: (1) sources and fates of MPs in the marine environment, (2) impacts of MPs on marine organisms, and (3) bacteria for the degradation of marine MPs. Some measures and efforts must be taken to solve the environmental problems caused by microplastics. The knowledge in this review will provide background information for marine microplastics studies and management strategies in future.

Microplastics in the edible tissues of shellfishes sold for human consumption

Microplastics in seafood are an emerging area of seafood safety concern. In this study, we investigated the presence of microplastics (100 μm - 5 mm) in the edible tissues of four species of shellfishes - two species of shrimp, Metapenaeus dobsoni and Fenneropenaeus indicus; one species of crab, Portunus pelagicus; and one species of squid Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvaucelii -all bought from fishing harbours of Kerala, India. An average of 2.7 ± 12 microplastic particles kg^-1 of edible tissue (wet weight) and 0.07 ± 0.3 microplastic particles/individual were obtained from the sampled shellfishes. No microplastics were found in the edible tissues of shrimps examined, while U. (P) duvaucelii had the highest microplastic content with an average of 7.7 ± 20 microplastic particles kg^-1 of edible tissue, followed by P. pelagicus with an average of 3.2 ± 10 microplastic particles kg^-1 of edible tissue. There was significant species variation in the microplastic contamination of shellfish soft tissues (p < 0.05). The study is the first of its kind to report the detection of microplastics in edible tissues of a squid species. Results suggested an annual dietary intake of about 13 ± 58 microplastic particles per year by shellfish consumers, which can vary based on the species, quantity, and extent of gut removal of seafood consumed.

Stable Isotope Insights into Microplastic Contamination within Freshwater Food Webs

Microplastic pollution and ingestion are ubiquitous phenomena in freshwater ecosystems. However, our understanding of the role of trophic niche in microplastic ingestion is still limited. Here, we quantified the level of microplastic (700 μm to 5 mm) contamination for macroinvertebrates and fish within the Garonne river. We then used stable isotope analyses (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) to quantify trophic niches. We first demonstrated that the abundance of ingested microplastics differed between macroinvertebrates and fish and was not significantly related to microplastic pollution. We then found that microplastic characteristics (shape, color, size, and polymer composition) differ between the abiotic (surface waters and sediments) and biotic (ingested by macroinvertebrates and fish) compartments. The abundance of ingested microplastics increased with the size of organisms in both fish and macroinvertebrates and tended to increase with trophic position in macroinvertebrates only. Finally, the origin of the resources consumed by fish significantly affected the abundance of microplastics ingested. Altogether, these results suggest the absence of microplastic bioaccumulation in freshwater food webs and the dominance of direct consumption, most likely accidentally. The use of stable isotope analyses is therefore crucial to improve our understanding of microplastic ingestion by wild organisms.

Microplastics in the Food Chain: Food Safety and Environmental Aspects

Plastic has been an incredibly useful and indispensable material in all aspects of human life. Without it many advances in medicine, technology or industry would not have been possible. However, its easy accessibility and low cost have led to global misuse. Basically, the production of the plastics from different chemical agents is very easy but unfortunately difficult to reuse or recycle, and it is thrown away as litter, incinerated or disposed of in landfill. Plastic once in the environment begins to degrade to very small sizes. Thus, many animals mistake them for food, so plastic enters a marine, terrestrial or freshwater food web. These microplastics although chemically inert have been shown to act as tiny "bio-sponges" for harmful chemicals found in the environment changing the nature of a plastic particle from chemically harmless to potentially toxic. It was believed that microparticles would simply pass through the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans with no biological effect. However, studies have shown that they are sometimes taken up and distributed throughout the circulatory and lymphatic system and may be stored in the fatty tissues of different organisms. The result of the uptake of them showed potential carcinogenic effects, liver dysfunction and endocrine disruption. This review focuses on micro- and nanoplastics and their way entering marine and freshwater food webs, with particular attention to microplastic trophic transfer, their toxic side effects and influence to the human consumer in health and safety in the future.

Independence of microplastic ingestion from environmental load in the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) from the Rhine river using high quality standards

Rivers play a crucial role in collecting and transporting microplastics. Nonetheless, the degree to which microplastic pollution of freshwaters affects its biota remains understudied. Sampling of wild fishes has so far demonstrated that microplastic ingestion occurs commonly across species with alternate feeding modes, as well as in different environmental compartments. Due to the exploratory nature of many preceding studies, drawing insight about factors driving microplastic ingestion has remained difficult. It continues unknown for instance, what the importance of varying environmental microplastic concentrations is to predict ingestion rates in fish from those areas. Here we show that ingestion rates of microplastic particles (>300 μm) in the benthic round goby from the Rhine river were negligible (1 particle in 417 fish). Among the 535 visually selected putative microplastic fragments, stringent data processing steps to reduce the number of false positives during reference library searches, revealed the importance of taking such steps into account in comparison with other data processing routines. Our observations remained consistent, despite having collected fish from a strongly polluted site of the lower Rhine, which served as contrast to a significantly cleaner site upstream. These results demonstrate that higher environmental microplastic concentrations are not necessarily mirrored by higher ingestion rates in a given fish species.
