Occurrence and ecological risk assessment of organic micropollutants in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China: A case study of water diversion

Fugacity model covering abiotic and biotic matrices to investigate the transfer and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids in a large shallow lake of eastern China

Solving the challenges faced during the measurement of the cross-interface transfer of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in lakes is crucial for clarifying environmental behaviours of these chemicals and their efficient governance. This study developed a multimedia fugacity model based on the quantitative water-air-sediment interaction (QWASI) covering abiotic/biotic matrices to investigate the cross-interface transfer and fate of PFAAs in Luoma Lake, a typical PFAA-contaminated shallow lake in eastern China. The accuracy and reliability of the established model were confirmed using Percent bias and Monte Carlo simulation, respectively. Using the QWASI model, the multimedia transfer of the PFAAs and their accumulation and persistence in different sub-compartments were described and measured, and the differences among individual PFAAs were explored. The simulation results showed that the sedimentation and resuspension of PFAAs were the most intense cross-interfacial transfers, and the sediments served as a chemical sink in the long term. A significant negative correlation of NC-F (the number of CF bonds) with the relative outflow flux (TW·out-ct) but a positive correlation with the relative net transfer across the interface between water and aquatic plants (Tp-ct) was detected, indicating that the PFAA migration capacity decreased but the bioaccumulation potential increased with the CF bond number. The persistence in water (Pw) of individual PFAAs ranged from 19.65d (PFOA) to 32.22d (PFOS), with an average of 26.15d; their persistence in sediment (Ps) ranged from 432d (PFBA) to 3216d (PFOS), with an average of 1524d, increasing linearly with an increase in NC-F. The water advection flows into and out of the lake (QW·in and QW·out), the PFAA concentration of water inflow (CW·in), and bioconcentration factor of aquatic plants (BCFp) were the primary parameters sensitive to PFAAs in all sub-compartments, which are essential indexes for exploring promising remediation pathways for lacustrine PFAA contamination based on the fugacity model simulation.

Occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern in surface and waste water from the Yangtze River chemical contiguous zone, China: Distribution, sources and ecological risk assessment

Limited knowledge exists regarding the occurrence, potential sources, and risks of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in surface and waste water from chemical contiguous zones. A total of 136 CECs were detected at 32 sampling sites along the Yangtze River, with concentrations ranging from 0.55 to 4.21 × 104 ng/L. Hydrocortisonacetate, cortisone, prednisone, enalapril and medroxyprogesterone were detected across all sampling sites. Hierarchical cluster analysis based on 47 core CECs yielded similar results compared with principal components analysis and identified two major clusters: wastewater sites and surface water sites. Distinct patterns of CECs were observed in wastewater from three industrial parks owing to variations in the industrial facilities and products within each park. Nineteen CECs were initially classified as presenting a high or medium risk to aquatic organisms. Further quantitative probabilistic risk assessment revealed that caffeine, trenbolone and norethindrone posed a threat to the most vulnerable aquatic species while high-risk sites mainly occurred downstream of the chemical industrial park. The joint ecological risk of high-risk CECs was evaluated using potentially affected fractions, which ranged from 0.44 % to 47.9 % with concentration addition and 0.33 % to 45.1 % with response addition. This suggests the need to consider the joint ecological risk of the detected compounds in future studies.

Evaluating a river's ecological health: A multidimensional approach

Evaluating the health of river surface water is essential, as rivers support significant biological resources and serve as vital drinking water sources. While the Water Quality Index (WQI) is commonly employed to evaluate surface water quality, it fails to consider biodiversity and does not fully capture the ecological health of rivers. Here we show a comprehensive assessment of the ecological health of surface water in the lower Yangtze River (LYR), integrating chemical and biological metrics. According to traditional WQI metrics, the LYR's surface water generally meets China's Class II standards. However, it also contains 43 high-risk emerging contaminants; nitrobenzenes are found at the highest concentrations, representing 25-90% of total detections, while polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons present the most substantial environmental risks, accounting for 81-93% of the total risk quotient. Notably, the plankton-based index of biological integrity (P-IBI) rates the ecological health of the majority of LYR water samples (59.7%) as 'fair', with significantly better health observed in autumn compared to other seasons (p < 0.01). Our findings suggest that including emerging contaminants and P-IBI as additional metrics can enhance the traditional WQI analysis in evaluating surface water's ecological health. These results highlight the need for a multidimensional assessment approach and call for improvements to LYR's ecological health, focusing on emerging contaminants and biodiversity rather than solely on reducing conventional indicators.

Microbiome analysis reveals alteration in water microbial communities due to livestock activities

The Baihe River, a tributary of the Yellow River located in the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Northern Sichuan, is surrounded by natural resources suitable for animal development. However, the impact of livestock activities water microbiome in this area remains unexplored. This study collected water samples from areas with captive yaks and sheep (NS and YS) and compared them with water samples from Hongyuan Baihe River. Through amplicon sequencing, we investigated the impact of livestock activities on aquatic microorganisms. Diversity analysis, significance analysis, and microbial phenotype prediction indicated a significant decrease in microbial community diversity and function in the NS and YS groups. Pathogenic microorganisms such as Bacteroidales and Thelebolaceae and antibiotic-resistant bacteria genes such as Flavobacteriales and Burkholderiaceae were significantly higher in livestock breeding areas. Additionally, bacteria adapted to acidification, hypoxia, and eutrophication (e.g., Acidobacteria, Flavobacteriales, Deltaproteobacteria, Rhodobacterales) were more abundant in these areas. Our results demonstrate that livestock activities significantly alter the structure and function of microbial communities in surrounding water bodies, deteriorating water quality.

Selected legacy and emerging organic contaminants in sediments of China's Yangtze - the world's third longest river: Response to anthropogenic activities

To explore contaminant concerns as a result of anthropogenic disturbance of the river system, this study provided the first extensive investigation of the contamination profiles, possible driving factors, and ecological risks of 40 target compounds including pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), neonicotinoid pesticides (NNIs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments of the whole Yangtze River (the world's third longest river). Recycled gold-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet

In this study, gold-reduced graphene oxide (Au@rGO) nanocomposite has been synthesized by repurposing electronic waste and dry batteries. This innovative approach involved utilizing the graphite rod from dry batteries to produce reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which was subsequently modified through the incorporation of gold nanoparticles obtained from recycled electronic waste. This methodology marks a significant breakthrough in electronic waste recycling, presenting a cost-effective and sustainable means of creating novel nanocomposites for applications in photocatalysis and adsorption, particularly in the removal of crystal violet (CV) from aqueous media. The synthesized Au@rGO nanocomposite was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersed X-ray, and N2 adsorption/desorption. Parameters that affect the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of CV dye have been studied in detail. The optimal conditions for CV adsorption and photocatalytic degradation were pH of 10, equilibrium time of 30 min, CV concentration of 10 mg/L and adsorbent dosage of 40 mg. Furthermore, the isotherm and kinetics of CV removal were also studied. The removal of CV dye using adsorption and photocatalytic degradation techniques reached 95% and 99%, respectively. Consequently, the results showed that photocatalytic degradation of CV dye onto the mesoporous Au@rGO nanocomposite is more proper way than the adsorption technique for removing the CV dye from aqueous media. The designed photocatalyst has high efficiency and it can be reused and activated several times so it can be used in real water treatment applications.

Application of passive sampling device for exploring the occurrence, distribution, and risk of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in surface water

Pharmaceuticals and pesticides are compounds of high concern in surface waters around the world. However, few studies have used passive sampling methods to screen and detect these compounds in natural waters. In this study, a self-developed passive sampler was employed to measure pharmaceuticals and pesticides in the rivers of Nanjing, China. A total of 41 pharmaceuticals and 11 pesticides were detected, among which antibiotic and insecticide were the predominant classes, respectively. Valproic acid, caffeine and triclosan from the pharmaceuticals, and isoprocarb and imidacloprid from the pesticides were found frequently with high concentrations. At most sampling sites, the concentration ratios of caffeine versus carbamazepine exceeded 10, and even above 50, indicating relatively poor efficiency of wastewater treatment, or possibly the direct discharge of raw sewage, or other unknown source of pollution. It was found that the concentrations and ecological risks in the northern area of Yangtze River were higher than those in the southern area of Yangtze River, implying that economic development and population density were not the main contributors to the discovered pollution. The total concentration of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in Qinhuai River increased gradually with the direction of water flow, demonstrating the success of water diversion project in flushing and scouring pollutants.

A continuation-dynamic constitution analysis approach based on digital stable marker tracing and study on simulation of ecological tidal water diversion

Water Diversion Projects have become increasingly popular in improving water quality in various water ecosystems. However, these projects also require a more comprehensive evaluation. In this study, we introduced a digital stable marker tracing module and proposed a continuation-dynamic constitution analysis approach. We applied this approach to analyze the ecological tidal water diversion in Changshu town, China. The results showed that the mean diversion water age of the Yangtze River water source was 10.80 h, the residence time of the background water source in Baimaotang was approximately 4.0 h, and the contribution of inflow water sources from tributaries accounted for 15% of discharges. The results can demonstrate practicality of our approach in quantitatively evaluating water diversion impacts and optimizing cooperative diversion projects. Furthermore, our discussion led to the design of an ecological tidal water diversion based on optimized cooperative diversion, which showed element-complementary and whole-comprehensive effects. This indicates that the ecological tidal water diversion can extend the impact of cooperative diversion. The continuation-dynamic constitution analysis approach enhances the tracing capacity of inflow constitution and enables the distinction of different time-varying distributions of each inflow constitution. Therefore, this approach holds promise as an embedded "Digital stable marker tracing" module in the model.

Rethinking terrestrial dissolved organic matter in dam reservoirs before mixing: Linking photodegradation and biodegradation and the phenanthrene binding behavior

With the increased construction of dam reservoirs and the demand for water security, terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) has received attention because of its role in regulating water quality, ecological functions, and the fate and transport of pollutants in dam reservoirs. This study investigated the transformations of soil DOM and vegetation DOM of dam reservoirs following photodegradation and biodegradation before conservative mixing, as well as the resultant effects on phenanthrene binding. Based on the results, terrestrial DOM could undergo transformation via photodegradation and biodegradation before conservative mixing in dam reservoirs. Although both processes resulted in substantial decreases in DOM concentrations, the changes in chromophoric DOM and fluorescent DOM depended on the original DOM sources. Furthermore, the photodegradation of terrestrial DOM resulted in more pronounced photobleaching than photomineralization. In addition, photodegradation of terrestrial DOM resulted in the generation of DOM-derived by-products with low molecular weight and low aromaticity, whereas the biodegradation of terrestrial DOM resulted in DOM-derived by-products with low molecular weight and high aromaticity. Subsequently, the photodegradation and biodegradation of terrestrial DOM substantially enhanced the binding affinity of phenanthrene. Soil DOM is prior to vegetation DOM when predicting the ecological risk of HOCs. These results indicate that the terrestrial DOM in dam reservoirs should be reconsidered before conservative mixing. Further studies on the coupling effects of both biogeochemical processes, as well as on the relative contributions of soil DOM and vegetation DOM after transformation to the aquatic DOM in dam reservoirs, are required. This study provides information on the environmental effects of dam construction from the perspective of biogeochemical processes.

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in the water sources of the Wuhan stretch of the Yangtze River: Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks

Given the ubiquitous detection of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in waterbodies worldwide and increasing public attention to water resource safety, this study investigated the presence of antibiotics and ARGs in the water sources of the Wuhan stretch of the Yangtze River (YR) as well as potential ecological risks. In this study, 15 antibiotics and 10 ARGs in a source of drinking water were analyzed using solid-phase extraction-ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technology (SPE-UPLC-MS/MS) and real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Fourteen antibiotics were detected in the samples from 18 water sources, with the highest concentration detected for tetracycline, reaching up to 1708.33 ng/L. The detection rates of norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, ofloxacin, tetracycline, and roxithromycin were 100%. The concentrations of antibiotics were highest in She Shui, followed by the Wuhan stretch of the lower reaches of the YR, whereas the lowest concentrations were found in the Wuhan stretch of the upper reaches of the YR which were approximately equal to those in the Han River (HR). Ofloxacin and roxithromycin presented a substantial threat to aquatic organisms with high sensitivity at the majority of the sampling sites. The overall abundance of ARGs was notably greater in the lower reaches of the YR compared with the upper reaches and the HR. The highest absolute abundance was observed for sulfa ARGs. Integron intl1 strongly correlated with sul1, sul2, ermB, and qnrS, and antibiotics, strongly correlated with multiple ARGs, suggesting that antibiotics and ARGs are present in water sources in Wuhan and may present a plausible hazard to both human and ecological well-being. Hence, regulating the spread and dissemination of antibiotics and ARGs in the environment is imperative. The findings of this research offer significant insights into the stewardship and safeguarding of aquatic reserves in the Wuhan stretch of the YR.

Strategies for enhancing performance of perovskite bismuth ferrite photocatalysts (BiFeO3): A comprehensive review

Organic pollutants pose a significant threat to water safety, and their degradation is of paramount importance. Photocatalytic technology has emerged as a promising approach for environmental remediation, and Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) has been shown to exhibit remarkable potential for photocatalytic degradation of water pollutants, with its excellent crystal structure properties and visible light photocatalytic activity. This review presents an overview of the crystal properties and photocatalytic mechanism of perovskite bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3), as well as a summary of various strategies for enhancing its efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. These strategies include pure phase preparation, microscopic modulation, composite modification of BiFeO3, and the integration of Fenton-like reactions and external field-assisted methods to improve its photocatalytic performance. The review emphasizes the impact of each strategy on photocatalytic enhancement. By providing comprehensive strategies for improving the efficiency of BiFeO3 photocatalysis, this review inspires new insights for efficient degradation of organic pollutants using BiFeO3 photocatalysis and contributes to the development of photocatalysis in environmental remediation.

Sequestration of steroidal estrogen in aqueous samples using an adsorption mechanism: a systemic scientometric review

Steroidal estrogens (SEs) remain one of the notable endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that pose a significant threat to the aquatic environment in this era owing to their interference with the normal metabolic functions of the human body systems. They are currently identified as emerging contaminants of water sources. The sources of SEs are either natural or synthetic active ingredients in oral contraceptive and hormonal replacement therapy drugs and enter the environment primarily from excretes in the form of active free conjugate radicals, resulting in numerous effects on organisms in aquatic habitats and humans. The removal of SEs from water sources is of great importance because of their potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Adsorption techniques have gained considerable attention as effective methods for the removal of these contaminants. A systemic review and bibliometric analysis of the application of adsorption for sequestration were carried out. Metadata for publications on SE removal utilizing adsorbents were obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) from January 1, 1990, to November 5, 2022 (107 documents) and Scopus databases from January 1, 1949, to November 5, 2022 (77 documents). In total, 137 documents (134 research and 4 review articles) were used to systematically map bibliometric indicators, such as the number of articles, most prolific countries, most productive scholars, and most cited articles, confirming this to be a growing research area. The use of different adsorbents, include activated carbon graphene-based materials, single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, biochar, zeolite, and nanocomposites. The adsorption mechanism and factors affecting the removal efficiency, such as pH, temperature, initial concentration, contact time and adsorbent properties, were investigated in this review. This review discusses the advantages and limitations of different adsorbents, including their adsorption capacities, regenerative potential, and cost-effectiveness. Recent advances and innovations in adsorption technology, such as functionalized materials and hybrid systems, have also been highlighted. Overall, the bibliographic analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the adsorption technique for the removal of SEs from other sources, serving as a valuable resource for researchers and policymakers involved in the development of efficient and sustainable strategies to mitigate the effects of these emerging contaminants.

Riverine antibiotic occurrence and potential ecological risks in a low-urbanized and rural basin of the middle Yangtze River: Socioeconomic, land use, and seasonal effects

This study firstly investigated the effects of season, land use, and socioeconomic on the spatiotemporal changes of riverine antibiotic concentrations in a low urbanized and rural watershed. In the dry and wet seasons, water samples were collected and analyzed for 15 antibiotics. The results indicated that 14 antibiotics, excluding leucomycin, were detected. Monsoon led to significantly lower total antibiotic concentrations in the wet season (22.0ngL^-1) than in the dry season (51.2ngL^-1). Total antibiotic concentrations were dominated by amoxicillin (below limit of detection (<LOD)-34.7ngL^-1)), erythromycin-H₂O (<LOD-14.7ngL^-1), roxithromycin (<LOD-27.9ngL^-1), and trimethoprim (<LOD-6.34ngL^-1). The total antibiotic concentrations were usually higher in the downstream areas of urban land than in the river reaches of forest land and agricultural land. At county or city scales, total antibiotic concentrations in the dry season were significantly correlated with the rural population, public budget, husbandry product and output, effluent volume, fishery product and output, and hospital number, which generally depend on land use in the basin. Amoxicillin poses a high ecological risk to aquatic algae, whereas erythromycin-H₂O, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin pose medium ecological risks. However, trimethoprim poses a medium ecological risk to mollusks. These results provide improved insights into the characteristics of antibiotic occurrence and ecological risks in the waters of low-urbanized and rural areas in China and can be extrapolated worldwide.

Occurrence and risk levels of antibiotic pollution in the coastal waters of eastern China

In order to preliminarily explore the distribution of antibiotic pollution in the coastal waters of eastern China, the concentrations of 13 antibiotics in 5 representative coastal rivers in Jiangsu and 21 sampling sites in the coastal waters of Jiangsu were analyzed. The total antibiotic concentrations in the 5 rivers ranged from 33.14 to 417.78 ng L^-1, and the total antibiotic concentrations in the 21 sampling sites ranged from 0.90 to 86.33 ng L^-1. Macrolides exhibited the highest total concentration and the maximum detection frequency in both coastal rivers and the coastal waters. The concentrations of antibiotics in a sampling site decreased as the distance of the sampling site from the coastline increased, indicating that river inputs are important sources of antibiotic pollution in the coastal waters of Jiangsu. The detection frequencies of roxithromycin, lincomycin, azithromycin, and sulfamethoxazole in the rivers and sampling sites were above 70%. Correlation analysis showed that the concentrations of antibiotics were positively correlated with the levels of chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen. Risk assessments revealed that roxithromycin and ofloxacin posed medium ecological and resistance risks, respectively, to the most sensitive aquatic organisms in the coastal waters of Jiangsu. The results of this study highlight the significance of monitoring and controlling the concentrations of antibiotic contaminants in the coastal waters of Jiangsu.

The derivation of soil generic assessment criteria for polychlorinated biphenyls under the agricultural land scenario in Pearl and Yangtze River Delta regions, China

The agricultural soils in China are suffered from serious polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination, however, the valid management standards for farmland are absent to efficiently control the health risks of PCBs exposure. This study analyzed the contamination characteristics and main composition of PCBs in agricultural soils of the southeastern China from the published literature over the past 20 years, and derived the regional generic assessment criteria (GAC) using an exposure modelling approach for individual and total PCBs (∑PCBs) via multiple exposure pathways such as ingestion of soil and dust, consumption of vegetables, dermal contact with soil and dust, ingestion of soil attached to vegetables, and inhalation of soil vapour and soil-derived dust outdoors under the agricultural land scenario. It is identified that the averaged ∑PCBs concentration of 80.03 ng g^-1 under the 95 % lower confidence limit with an unacceptable health risk of 4.8 × 10^-6 has significantly exceeded the integrated generic assessment criteria (expressed as GAC_int) of 16.5 ng g^-1. Accordingly, the exposure pathways from the consumption of agricultural produces and indirect ingestion of soil attached to vegetables contributed up to 62 %-88 % of the total exposure, followed by 11 %-33 % of the soil ingestion and 2 %-6 % of dermal contact. The derived GAC_int for ∑PCBs is extremely valuable to effectively assess and manage the PCBs contamination in agricultural soils of China.

The metabolites could not be ignored: A comparative study of the metabolite norfluoxetine with its parent fluoxetine on zebrafish (Danio rerio)

The ubiquitous pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments have attracted huge attention due to their significant risks to humans and ecosystems. However, even though the knowledge of the negative effects induced by the parent pharmaceuticals is quite extensive, little is known about their metabolites for a long time. This study provides systematical knowledge about the potential toxicity of metabolite norfluoxetine and its parent fluoxetine on zebrafish (Danio rerio) at the early life stage. The results showed that the metabolite norfluoxetine had similar acute toxicity in fish with the parent fluoxetine. For the altered fish development, there was no significant difference in most cases between the two pharmaceuticals. Compared to the control, the metabolite markedly inhibited the locomotor behavior under light-to-dark transitions, which was comparable to the parent. Norfluoxetine could easily accumulate but hardly eliminate from fish, relative to fluoxetine. In addition, the accumulated fluoxetine in zebrafish may rapidly metabolize to norfluoxetine and then be eliminated through different metabolic pathways. The functional genes related to serotonergic process (5-ht1aa, 5-ht2c, slc6a4b, and vmat), early growth (egr4), and circadian rhythm (per2) were downregulated by both the norfluoxetine and fluoxetine, indicative of the same mode-of-action of norfluoxetine with its parent in these functions. Meanwhile, the alterations caused by norfluoxetine were more pronounced than that of fluoxetine in the genes of 5-ht2c, slc6a4b, vmat, and per2. The molecular docking also confirmed that norfluoxetine could bind with serotonin transporter protein in the same as fluoxetine with a lower binding free energy. Overall, the metabolite norfluoxetine could induce similar and even more toxic effects on zebrafish with the same mode of action. The different and binding energy of the metabolite norfluoxetine and its parent fluoxetine on zebrafish may be responsible for the differentiated effects. It highlights the risks of the metabolite norfluoxetine in the aquatic environment could not be ignored.

Occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential risks of organic micropollutants in urban surface waters from qinghai, northwest China

Lack of knowledge on the destiny of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the Tibetan Plateau region of China prevents the public from being aware of the need for protecting these unique aquatic ecosystems that are precious water resources and source areas of the Yellow River. To address this knowledge gap, this study systematically investigated the multi-residue analysis, distribution, and potential risks of six types of OMPs, namely, neonicotinoid pesticides (NEOs), fungicides, organophosphate esters (OPEs), organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), psychoactive substances (PSs), and antidepressants (ADs), in surface waters of major cities in Qinghai. A total of 31 compounds, consisting of 8 NEOs, 1 fungicide, 12 OPEs, 2 OPPs, 5 PSs, and 3 ADs, were detected in >50% of the sites, showing their ubiquitous nature in the study area. Results showed that the total OMP concentration in surface water was 28.3-908 ng/L, and OPEs were the dominant composition (48.6%-97.4%). The risk quotient values of the detected diazinon and dursban regularly exceeded 1 for aquatic organisms at all sampling sites, indicating moderate-high chronic ecological risk. The joint probability curves showed that dursban and NEOs have higher risk levels than other OMPs. Although the results of the non-carcinogenic total hazard quotient of the OMPs in the surface water was less than 1 in all age groups and the carcinogenic risk was lower than the negligible risk level, the potential risks to children and infants were considerably greater and should not be underestimated. In addition to pollutant concentration and exposure duration, ingestion rate and body weight (BW) are also important factors affecting health risk, with BW having a negative effect. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this report is the first to describe OMP pollution in Qinghai, and the results provide new insight into the ecological security of the water resources of the Tibetan Plateau.

Distribution, Bioaccumulation, and Risks of Pharmaceutical Metabolites and Their Parents: A Case Study in an Yunliang River, Nanjing City

The occurrence, bioaccumulation, and risks of 11 pairs of pharmaceutical metabolites and their respective parents were investigated in the water, sediment, and fish of an urban river in Nanjing city, China. The results showed that most of the target metabolites and their parents were detected in all water samples, with concentrations ranging from 0.1 ng/L to 72.9 ng/L. In some cases, the concentrations of metabolites in water were significantly higher than their parents, with fold changes reaching up 4.1 in the wet season and 6.6 in the dry season, while in sediment and fish, a lower concentration was observed in most cases. A lowered concentration of detected pharmaceuticals was observed in the dry season when compared to the wet season due to the seasonal variation in pharmaceutical consumption and overflow effluent. The bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals in different fish tissues were detected with a descending order of overall concentration as gill > brain > muscle > gonad > intestine > liver > blood. In addition, the concentrations of both metabolites and their parents also decreased along the river in two seasons. However, the concentration rates of metabolites and their parents were significantly altered along the river in both water and sediment. The relatively high concentration proportions of the detected pharmaceuticals in water suggested that pharmaceuticals were more likely to apportion in water than in sediment, especially for the metabolites. Meanwhile, the rates of the metabolite/parent pairs between fish and water/sediment were generally lower, indicating the higher excretion capacity of metabolites from fish than their parents. Most of the detected pharmaceuticals had no impact on aquatic organisms. However, the presence of ibuprofen posed a medium risk to fish. Compared to the parents, metabolites showed a relatively low risk value but a high contribution to the total risk. It highlights that metabolites in the aquatic environments cannot be ignored.

Perfluoroalkyl acids in the aquatic environment of a fluorine industry-impacted region: Spatiotemporal distribution, partition behavior, source, and risk assessment

The present study investigated the temporal and spatial distributions, partition behaviors, sources, and risks of 14 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in the aquatic environment of a fluorine industry-impacted region. The total concentrations of 14 PFAAs (ΣPFAAs) were 118.10-2235.4 ng/L, 40.00-2316.1 ng/g dw, and 6.90-180.5 ng/g dw in dissolved, suspended particle matter (SPM), and sedimentary phases, respectively. The predominant pollutants in the dissolved and SPM phases were perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with carbon chain lengths <9, whereas C13 and C14 PFCAs accounted for a large proportion in the sedimentary phase. The dry season exhibited the highest concentration of ΣPFAAs in the dissolved phase (500.9 ± 350.2 ng/L), while the wet season showed the highest concentrations of ΣPFAAs in the SPM and sedimentary phases (591.6 ± 469.1 ng/g dw and 59.7 ± 35.5 ng/g dw, respectively). Significantly higher concentrations of PFAAs have been found in sewage plant and industrial areas. The concentration of PFAAs in the Xupu water source area (XPS) was slightly higher than that in other water source areas of the Yangtze River, which were either not affected or were less affected by the fluorine industry. The log K_D-SPM (distribution coefficient between SPM and water), log K_D-SED (distribution coefficient between sediment and water), and log K_OC-SED (the organic carbon normalized distribution coefficient) of PFAAs showed significant differences between the wet season and dry season, which may also be affected by carbon chain length. Source identification results showed that industries, wastewater discharge, and nonpoint sources were the main sources of PFAAs in this region. The ecological risk posed by long-chain PFAAs in aquatic organisms cannot be ignored, especially in areas with intensive industrial and agricultural activities. Health risks may exist for local toddlers with long-term exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) through drinking water intake and dermal contact.

Freshwater Environmental Risk Assessment of Down-the-Drain Octinoxate Emissions in the United States

Organic ultraviolet (UV) filters are used in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products (CPCPs), including sunscreens, due to their ability to absorb solar radiation. These UV filters can be washed down the drain through bathing, cleansing, or the laundering of clothing, therefore UV filters can enter the freshwater environment via wastewater treatment plant effluent, and so a freshwater risk assessment is necessary to establish the environmentally safe use of these important CPCP ingredients. In the present study, an environmental safety assessment for a UV filter of regulatory concern, octinoxate, was conducted. An established risk assessment framework designed specifically for CPCPs released to the freshwater environment in the United States was used for the assessment. A distribution of predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) representative of conditions across the region was calculated using the spatially resolved probabilistic exposure model iSTREEM. A review of available hazard data was conducted to derive a predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC). The safety assessment was conducted by comparing the PEC distribution to the PNEC. A substantial margin of safety was found between the 90th percentile PEC, which is representative of the reasonable worst-case environmental exposure, and the PNEC. Owing to this finding of negligible risk, further refinement of the risk assessment through the generation of experimental data or refinement of conservative assumptions is not prioritized. These results are critical for demonstrating the environmental safety of UV filters in the US freshwater environment and will help guide future work. Challenges of Urban Artificial Landscape Water Bodies: Treatment Techniques and Restoration Strategies towards Ecosystem Services Enhancement

With the rapid adoption of green infrastructure and nature-based solutions for a low-impact development, much consideration is given to ecosystem services and the ecological enhancement in modern planning of urban spaces. Artificial landscape water bodies have, in recent years, been utilized to enhance the ecological quality of urban environments. As an environmentally friendly measure, the water source of these waters has predominantly been adopting reclaimed water (treated wastewater). As a result, landscape water bodies are often eutrophic, exhibiting poor hydrodynamics, with lengthy water change cycles, creating the ideal environment for algal blooms that negatively impact the aesthetic appeal of these landscape waters. Based on the existing literature, this paper summarizes the treatment techniques and strategies employed in enhancing the quality of urban artificial landscape water bodies and providing integrated design solutions in the urban environment.

Influence of Microbial Treatment on the Preparation of Porous Biochar with Stepped-Up Performance and Its Application in Organic Pollutants Control

In this study, Irisensata Thunb grass (ITG) was used as a biomass carbon resource to prepare biochars for the first time. After microbial treatment, the obtained microbial-treated ITG (MITG) was activated by using a mixed base as an activator for preparation of biochar (MITGB). The specific surface area and total pore volume of MITGB were 3036.4 m²/g and 1.5252 cm³/g, which were higher than those of biochar prepared without microbial treatment (ITGB, 2930.0 m²/g and 1.5062 cm³/g). Besides, the physicochemical properties of MITGB and ITGB were also quite different including micro morphology, surface chemistry, functional groups, etc. In the experiment of removing organic pollutants with synthetic dye RhB and antibiotic TH as the models, MITGB showed excellent treatment ability. The maximum adsorption capacities of MITGB for RhB and TH were 1354.2 and 1462.6 mg/g, which were higher than most of the biochars. In addition, after five cycles of recycling, the adsorption capacities of the organic pollutant models can still be maintained at more than 80%, which showed high stability. This work verified the feasibility of microbial treatment to further improve the performance of biochar and provided a new idea and direction for exploring other biochars.

Melanin interference toxicity or transgenerational toxicity of organic UV filter ethylhexyl salicylate on zebrafish

With the improvement of human health awareness, the production and usage of sunscreens have increased dramatically, and their active ingredients, organic ultraviolet (UV) filters (OUVFs), have the potential to induce melanin abnormalities in aquatic organisms due to their UV-absorbing properties as they enter the aquatic environment directly with the washing of skin during water activities. In this paper, the melanin interference toxicity or transgenerational toxicity effects of typical OUVFs ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) on zebrafish (Danio rerio) were investigated based on transcriptomic sequencing technology. Results showed that EHS induced significant enrichment of the melanin-related pathway cAMP signaling pathway in parental skin tissue through UV absorption, with sensitive genes identified as melanocortin 1 receptor, protein kinase A catalytic subunit beta a, calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II delta 2, adenylate cyclase 1 and G protein subunit alpha I a. qRT-PCR verification results showed that EHS may inhibit the expression of the melanin master regulator microphthalmia-associated transcription factor a (mitfa) and its induced signaling cascade mitf-tyrosinase (tyr)-dopachrome tautomerase (dct)-tyrosinase related protein 1 (tyrp1) by inducing abnormal expression of the above sensitive genes, thereby reducing melanogenesis. After reproduction, the melanin interference effect of EHS on the parents can be carried over to offsprings through maternal inheritance of abnormally expressed mitfa and parental transfer of pollutants, as evidenced by significant enrichment of melanogenesis pathway, abnormal expression of sensitive genes mitfa, tyr, dct and tyrp1b and significant decreases in melanin content and spinal melanin area. These findings revealed the specific melanin interference toxicity of OUVFs with UV-absorbing properties, facilitating a comprehensive ecological risk assessment of OUVFs and providing scientific support for the management of new pollutants.

Sources, Environmental Fate, and Ecological Risks of Antibiotics in Sediments of Asia's Longest River: A Whole-Basin Investigation

This study conducted the first extensive and comprehensive investigation of the whole-scale sedimentary antibiotic concentration, possible drivers, environmental fate, and potential ecological risks in the Yangtze River. Totally, 20 antibiotics were detected in the sediments. Results revealed that the order of antibiotic abundance in sediment was fluoroquinolones > tetracyclines > macrolides > sulfonamides > amphenicols. The total antibiotic concentrations were 0.10-134.4 ng/g (mean: 11.88 ng/g). Of these, fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines were the two dominant antibiotic categories. The dominant occurrence of fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines in sediments suggested that the distribution coefficient (K_d) was one of the important factors to determine their fate. Correlation analysis demonstrated that antibiotic contamination was largely influenced by the local scale of animal husbandry, and the positive correlation between antibiotics and heavy metals was likely driven by their common source of contamination and the complexation. Environmental risk assessment showed that tetracycline and chlortetracycline exhibited potential risks from medium to high in the Yangtze River, although most of the compounds posed minimal and low risks. This work provided a valuable large-scale data set across the whole Yangtze River and revealed the contamination profile of antibiotics. Mitigation and management measures to reduce antibiotic inputs are needed for the Yangtze River basin.

Modeling micropollutant removal by nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes: considerations and challenges

Organic micropollutants (OMPs) in drinking water constitute a potential risk to human health; therefore, effective removal of these pollutants is required. Nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are promising membrane-based technologies to remove OMPs. In NF and RO, the rejection of OMPs depends on the properties and characteristics of the membrane, the solute, and the solution. In this review, we discuss how these properties can be included in models to study and predict the rejection of OMPs. Initially, an OMP classification is proposed to capture the relevant properties of 58 OMPs. Following the methodology described in this study, more and new OMPs can be easily included in this classification. The classification aims to increase the comprehension and mechanistic understanding of OMP removal. Based on the physicochemical principles used to classify the 58 OMPs, it is expected that other OMPs in the same groups will be similarly rejected. From this classification, we present an overview of the rejection mechanisms involved in the removal of specific OMP groups. For instance, we discuss the removal of OMPs classified as perfluoroalkyl substances (e.g., perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA). These substances are highly relevant due to their human toxicity at extremely low concentration as well as their persistence and omnipresence in the environment. Finally, we discuss how the rejection of OMPs can be predicted by describing both the membrane-solution interface and calculating the transport of solutes inside the membrane. We illustrate the importance and impact of different rejection mechanisms and interfacial phenomena on OMP removal and propose an extended Nernst-Plank equation to calculate the transport of solutes across the membrane due to convection, diffusion, and electromigration. Finally, we show how the theory discussed in this review leads to improved predictions of OMP rejection by the membranes.

Export and risk from antibiotic remobilization from surrounding water to lake in the extreme 2020 Yangtze River basin flooding

Global climate change increased the frequency of extreme rainfall events, leading to higher flood risk. In addition to the personal and property losses, another important consequence of a flood disaster was release and exposure risks from emerging contaminants, which was usually overlooked. The remobilization and fate of the antibiotics induced by floods remain unclear. We captured antibiotic concentrations around the Chaohu Lake after an unprecedented flood with a range of 5.0-317 ng/L. Higher concentrations in polder waters than their receiving rivers were attributed to the antibiotic release from soil particles and the sharp increase of water: soil ratio by flood storage. Source apportionment analysis of antibiotics implied that diffuse pollution by manure application and aquaculture activity was the predominant sources. Commonalities of spatial variations of antibiotics in polders were related to the condition of waterlogging and pollution source. The total antibiotic storage for all submerged polders was estimated at 27.9 kg. The concentrations and risks from pumping floodwater detained by polders into the lake were much higher than that from discharging flood directly into the lake. The retention-reaction-remobilization process would pose unexpectedly high risks for the lake. This study provided a new sight for constructing ecological wetland flood storage areas.

Alterations in microbial community during the remediation of a black-odorous stream by acclimated composite microorganisms

Microbial application is an efficient, economical, and ecofriendly method for remediating black-odorous rivers. In this study, the field treatment effect and microbial community changes were monitored during remediation by the acclimated complex microorganisms of a typical black-odorous stream. After the treatment, the total phosphorus and ammonia contents decreased by 74.0% and 76.3% and the concentrations of dissolved oxygen increased from 1.65 to 4.90 mg/L, indicating the effectiveness of the acclimated composite microorganisms. The proportion of Bacteroidetes decreased significantly by 48.1% and that of Firmicutes increased by 2.23% on average, and the microbial diversity index first increased and then tended to be uniform. Redundancy analysis demonstrated that the pH, dissolved oxygen, and oxidation-reduction potential together determined the composition of the microbial communities (p < 0.05). These findings showed that the acclimated composite microorganisms can effectively remediate the black odor.

Monitoring and control methods of harmful algal blooms in Chinese freshwater system: a review

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a worldwide problem with substantial adverse effects on the aquatic environment as well as human health, which have prompted researchers to study measures to stem and control them. Meanwhile, it is key to research and develop monitoring methods to establish early warning HABs. However, both the current monitoring methods and control methods have some shortcomings, making the field application limited. Thus, we need to improve current approaches for monitoring and controlling HABs efficiently. Based on the freshwater system features in China, we review various monitoring and control methods of HABs, summarize and discuss the problems with these methods, and propose the future development direction of monitoring and control HABs. Finally, we envision that it can combine physical, chemical, and biological methods to inhibit HAB expansion in the future, complementing each other with advantages. Further, we promise to establish a long-term strategy of controlling HABs with various algicidal bacteria co-cultivate for field applications in China. Efforts in studying algicidal bacteria must be increased to better control HABs and mitigate the risks of aquatic ecosystems and human health in China.

Epigenetic mechanisms of DNA methylation in the transgenerational effect of ethylhexyl salicylate on zebrafish

In this study, a 120-day whole-life cycle exposure and oviposition experiment on zebrafish with maternal and paternal mixed mating strategy was conducted to investigate the epigenetic mechanism of DNA methylation in ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS, 1, 10, 100 μg/L)-induced transgenerational effects. Results showed that EHS could induce the decrease of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) activity and average global DNA methylation level in maternal parents and the increase of the above indexes in paternal parents, while the change of glycine N-methyltransferase activity was opposite to DNMT1. The average global DNA methylation levels were significantly increased in the offsprings of both parents exposed and father-only exposed to EHS, suggesting that EHS-induced epigenetic modifications may be stable and heritable. Hierarchical clustering analysis of promoter at different methylation sites showed that the DNA methylation pattern of offsprings were similar to that of the paternal parents, meaning that the offsprings may have inherited paternal DNA methylation pattern with eya2, pcdh2g5 and pcdh2g1 as key genes and lead to high locomotor activity in offsprings. KEGG pathway analysis showed that parental exposure to EHS may interfere with the central nervous system, insulin function system, melanogenesis system and the normal development of somatic axis of offsprings.

Distributions and potential sources of traditional and emerging polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments from the lower reach of the Yangtze River, China

This study investigated the current contamination status and potential sources of traditional and emerging polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (t-PAHs and e-PAHs) in the sediments across a wide area of the Yangtze River, spanning nine cities. Fifty-seven sediment samples were collected in 2019, from which 15 t-PAHs and 11 e-PAHs were analyzed using GC-MSD. In addition, organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) in sediments were measured to evaluate associations with PAHs contamination. OC, TN, and their stable isotope ratios showed a wide range of site-specific contents and values, indicating high variation in contamination and sources. Concentrations of t-PAHs and e-PAHs in sediments ranged from 0.6 to 200,000 ng g^-1 dry weight (dw) and 1.1 to 20,000 ng g^-1 dw, respectively. Hotspot sites located in Nanjing (PuKou), Taizhou (JingJiang), and Suzhou (ZhangJiaGang). PAHs contamination reflected land use type and human activity in the surrounding area. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) modeling showed that, on average (n = 57), vehicle emissions were the most dominant contribution (57%), followed by petroleum (28%) and fossil fuel combustion (15%). Sites with high PAHs contamination in sediments were of severe ecological risk. Contributions to the potential risks of PAHs were most significant in the order of dibenz[a,h]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene. The primary origin of these compounds appeared to be fossil fuel combustion. The results of this study are expected to provide useful baseline data on the current contamination status and potential sources of traditional and emerging pollutants in the sediments of the Yangtze River, China.

Phytoremediation mechanisms and plant eco-physiological response to microorganic contaminants in integrated vertical-flow constructed wetlands

Vegetations play a vital role in the ecological function of constructed wetlands (CW), but the systemic phytoremediation mechanism of CW is still unclear. An integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland (IVCW) was established to elucidate the phytoremediation mechanisms and plants eco-physiological response to an emerging contaminant, sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Attenuation of SMX in IVCW with and without vegetation (Acorus calamus) are comparatively analyzed. The results showed significant enhancement of removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (via intensified denitrification) and SMX by up to 10% respectively with vegetation. A unique micro-rhizo environment was created by stimulating the denitrifiers, Clostridium_sensu_stricto, Ignavibacterium, Rhodanobacter, and Geobacter. Free-living plant growth-promoting bacteria, unclassified_Burkholderiales and unclassified_Betaproteobacteria, proliferated in the rhizosphere, protecting the growth mechanism of A. calamus and, consequently, promoting performance of the IVCW. Overall, A. calamus exhibited tolerance to SMX, maintaining its photosynthesis rate and stabilizing the plant cell structure by an effective antioxidant system. The growth and defense mechanisms of A. calamus appeared to positively correlate with the IVCW performance, whereby the photosynthetic rate and antioxidant enzymes activities peaked together with the maximum removal efficiency of TN (77.81%) and SMX (99.88%). The contribution of vegetation to ecotoxicity reduction in CW might be underrated as absorbed SMX could be phytodegraded into less toxic metabolites via specific enzymes.

Environmental contamination and human exposure of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in China: A review

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), together with 11 other organic compounds, were initially listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention because of their potential threat to ecosystems and humans. In China, many monitoring studies have been undertaken to reveal the level of PCBs in environment since 2005 due to the introduced stricter environmental regulations. However, there are still significant gaps in understanding the overall spatial and temporal distributions of PCBs in China. This review systematically discusses the occurrence and distribution of PCBs in environmental matrices, organisms, and humans in China. Results showed that PCB contamination in northern and southern China was not significantly different, but the PCB levels in East China were commonly higher than those in West China, which might have been due to the widespread consumption of PCBs and intensive human activities in East China. Serious PCB contamination was found in e-waste disassembling areas (e.g., Taizhou of Zhejiang Province and Qingyuan and Guiyu of Guangdong Province). Higher PCB concentrations were also chronicled in megalopolises and industrial clusters. The unintentionally produced PCBs (UP-PCBs) formed during industrial thermal processes may play an increasingly significant role in PCB pollution in China. Low PCB levels were recorded in rural and underdeveloped districts, particularly in remote and high-altitude localities such as the Tibetan Plateau and the South China Sea. However, these data are limited. Human exposure to PCBs is closely related to the characteristics of environmental pollution. This review also discusses existing issues and future research prospects on PCBs in China. For instance, the accumulation characteristics and migration regularities of PCBs in food webs should be further studied. More investigations should be undertaken to assess the quantitative relationship between external and internal exposure to PCBs. For example, bioaccessibility and bioavailability studies should be supplemented to evaluate human health risks more accurately.

Which Micropollutants in Water Environments Deserve More Attention Globally?

Increasing chemical pollution of aquatic environments is a growing concern with global relevance. A large number of organic chemicals are termed as "micropollutants" due to their low concentrations, and long-term exposure to micropollutants may pose considerable risks to aquatic organisms and human health. In recent decades, numerous treatment methods and technologies have been proposed to remove micropollutants in water, and typically several micropollutants were chosen as target pollutants to evaluate removal efficiencies. However, it is often unclear whether their toxicity and occurrence levels and frequencies enable them to contribute significantly to the overall chemical pollution in global aquatic environments. This review intends to answer an important lingering question: Which micropollutants or class of micropollutants deserve more attention globally and should be removed with higher priority? Different risk-based prioritization approaches were used to address this question. The risk quotient (RQ) method was found to be a feasible approach to prioritize micropollutants in a large scale due to its relatively simple assessment procedure and extensive use. A total of 83 prioritization case studies using the RQ method in the past decade were compiled, and 473 compounds that were selected by screening 3466 compounds of three broad classes (pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, and industrial chemicals) were found to have risks (RQ > 0.01). To determine the micropollutants of global importance, we propose an overall risk surrogate, that is, the weighted average risk quotient (WARQ). The WARQ integrates the risk intensity and frequency of micropollutants in global aquatic environments to achieve a more comprehensive priority determination. Through metadata analysis, we recommend a ranked list of 53 micropollutants, including 36 PPCPs (e.g., sulfamethoxazole and ibuprofen), seven pesticides (e.g., heptachlor and diazinon), and 10 industrial chemicals (e.g., perfluorooctanesulfonic acid and 4-nonylphenol) for risk management and remediation efforts. One caveat is that the ranked list of global importance does not consider transformation products of micropollutants (including disinfection byproducts) and new forms of pollutants (including antibiotic resistance genes and microplastics), and this list of global importance may not be directly applicable to a specific region or country. Also, it needs mentioning that there might be no best answer toward this question, and hopefully this review can act as a small step toward a better answer.

Connection between Anthropogenic Water Diversion and Hydrodynamic Condition in Plain River Network

The increase in the rate of water renewal driven by hydrodynamics contributes to improving the water quality of the plain river network. Taking the lakeside river network in Wuxi as an example, through numerical simulation, polynomial fitting, correlation analysis, and principal component analysis, the hydrodynamic responses of urban lake-connected river networks to water diversion and hydrodynamic grouping were researched. Based on numerical model and influence weight analysis, we explored the improvement of hydrodynamic conditions of plain river network with strong human intervention and high algal water diversion. The results showed that: (1) The relationship between water diversion impact on river network flow velocity and water diversion flux was not as simple a linear relationship. It could be reflected by polynomial. The water transfer interval in dry season with high hydrodynamic efficiency (HE) was lower than 10 m3/s and higher than 30 m3/s, and the HE increased significantly when the water transfer flow was higher than 20 m3/s in the wet season. (2) According to the main hydrodynamic driving factors, the channels in the river network could be divided into three types: water conservancy projects, river and lake water level difference, and river channel characteristic. The correlations of rivers’ flow velocity in each group were very high. (3) The influence weights of water conservancy projects, river and lake water level difference, and river channel characteristic on the whole river network dynamics were 65, 21, and 12.4%, respectively, and the other factors contributed 1.6% of the weight.

Occurrence and risk assessment of volatile organic compounds in multiple drinking water sources in the Yangtze River Delta region, China

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are widely present in water environment, which can threaten ecological sustainability and human health. The concentrations of VOCs and their ecological risks in drinking water are of great concern to human beings. Therefore, 54 kinds of VOCs were investigated from 58 locations of the Yangtze River Delta Region (Yangtze River, Qiantang River, Huangpu River, Taihu Lake and Jiaxing Urban River). Out of 54 target compounds, only 31 VOCs were detected, with total concentrations ranging from 0.570 to 46.820 μg/L from 58 locations of all drinking water sources. Among all detected VOCs compounds, only toluene and styrene can cause high-level ecological risk at location TH-2 of Taihu Lake. According to the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk index, compounds such as 1,2-dichloroethane, bromodichloromethane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane posed a higher carcinogenic risk, and 1,2-dichloroethane, trichloroethylene and toluene posed a higher non-carcinogenic risk. Olfactory risks of water bodies in the Yangtze River Delta region are negligible. Although the concentrations of VOCs in the Yangtze River Delta region did not exceed national standards in China and guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water, the presence of some ecological and health risks indicated that future monitoring studies and control practices are important to ensure ecological safety of drinking water sources.

Ship navigation disturbance alters multiphase distribution of perfluoroalkyl acids and increases their ecological risk in waterways

As a global persistent organic pollutant, perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have aroused great public concern. However, little is known regarding the effect of ship navigation disturbance on the transport and fate of PFAAs in inland waterways developed regions. In the present study, overlying water, pore water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment were collected from waterways (WWs), non-navigable channels (NCs), and ports (PTs) in Taihu Lake Basin. The results revealed that the total concentrations of PFAAs (ΣPFAAs) in WWs, NCs, and PTs varied considerably in different media. In overlying water, the mean ΣPFAAs in WWs were the highest, while those of NCs were relatively higher in the remaining three media. A comparison of PFAA distribution coefficients revealed that the values in NCs were generally higher than those of WWs and PTs, suggesting the critical role of ship navigation in PFAA transport. Furthermore, a structural equation model was applied to estimate direct and indirect effects of environmental factors on PFAA partitioning behavior. The results revealed that ship traffic volume (STV) exerted indirect effects on PFAA distribution between solid and dissolved phases by influencing dissolved oxygen, total suspended solid concentration, clay and sand contents, and median diameter. PFAAs were more readily to be released into overlying water from pore water than in sediment, and the ΣPFAAs carried per gram of SPM decreased with an increase in STV. Ecological risk assessment and Monte Carlo simulation results revealed that ship navigation could exert adverse effects on aquatic organisms, making the average probability of RQ_mix values to exceed corresponding risk values in WWs, which were 1.3-2-fold higher than in NCs. The present study provides crucial information for simulating the environmental behaviors of PFAAs under the influence of ship navigation and is significant for the integration of inland water transport development and aquatic environmental protection.

Octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow) dependent movement and time lagging of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from emission sources to lake sediments: A case study of Taihu Lake, China

Understanding the movement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from emission sources to sediments is important for achieving long-term pollution control of PAHs in sediments. In this study, by exploring the correlation of individual PAHs concentrations (C_PAHs) in Taihu Lake sediments reported in the past twenty years with their annual emissions (E_PAHs) in the lake region, it was observed that mean concentrations of PAHs with low logK_ow (i.e., logK_ow≤4.00) in Taihu Lake sediments were correlated best with their emissions without lagging between the sediment sampling time and the PAHs emitting time. However, for PAHs with middle logK_ow (i.e., 4.00<logK_ow≤4.57) or high logK_ow (i.e., logK_ow>4.57), their mean concentrations in sediments were correlated best with the emissions of PAHs emitted 1 or 2 years before the sediment sampling time. The longer lagging time of PAHs with middle or high logK_ow from emission sources to lake sediments could be attributed to their retardation in soils and river sediments around the lake. Moreover, the retardation in soils and river sediments is dependent on PAHs logK_ow and degradation half-life, indicating the dependence of PAHs concentration in sediments on their environmental behaviors, including sorption and degradation. K_ow dependent movement and the time lagging observed in Taihu Lake for PAHs from emission sources to sediments could be valuable for developing measures to control PAHs, especially for congeners with high logK_ow.

Application of different redox mediators induced bio-promoters to accelerate the recovery of denitrification and denitrifying functional microorganisms inhibited by transient Cr(VI) shock

The transient hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) shock may directly inhibit the denitrification process of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which is difficult to recover in a short time. This study developed four nontoxic bio-promoters (combination of L-cysteine, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), biotin, cytokinin and different redox mediators) to quickly restore the denitrification performance after high-loading Cr(VI) suppressing. After feeding with 100 mg/L of Cr(VI) for 42 cycles (T, 4 h), the removal efficiency of nitrate was reduced by 85.00%, and nitrite was accumulated simultaneously. The denitrification performance was recovered quickly with the addition of bio-promoters, introducing redox mediators showed noticeable superiority on the bio-inhibition release. Compared with sodium humate and riboflavin, the AQDS induced bio-promoter achieved the best nitrate removal recovery performance within only 28 T, and the recovery rate was 2.16 times faster than the natural recovery. Microbial analysis showed that Cr(VI) specially inhibited napA-type denitrifiers, and the OTU numbers sharply dropped by 48.74%. Redox mediators induced bio-promoters could effectively recover the abundance of napA-type and nirS-type denitrifying microorganisms, which was consistent with the change of nitrate removal efficiency. This study offers a cost-effective approach to deal with Cr(VI) shock problem, which may promote the development of bio-promoters for WWTPs.

Microplastic pollution in an urbanized river affected by water diversion: Combining with active biomonitoring

Microplastics as the most challenging environmental pollutants in ocean have raised increasing concerns, however, the understanding of microplastics in freshwater falls far behind. The main objective of this study is to assess the microplastic pollution in an urbanized river affected by water diversion. The active biomonitoring method with caged native crucian carp (Carassius auratus) was used to evaluate the microplastic risk for riverine fish. It found that microplastic abundance in water and sediment was 1467-20567 items/m³ and 1115-6380 items/kg, respectively. The operational water diversion did not alleviate the microplastic pollution in water. The abundance in sediment was not simply proportional to that in water. However, the main morphological profiles and polymer composition were similar in the water and sediment. Microplastic accumulation in caged fish intestine was higher than that in gill. Intestine seems to be an ideal tissue to reflect the microplastic pollution in water. Shapes may contribute to the accumulation in fish. Based on the pollution load index, all caged fish did not reach to high level risks. These findings not only improve the understanding on the impact of water diversion on microplastic pollution in urban river, but also shed an insight in the related risk for riverine fish.

Screening and ecological risk of 1200 organic micropollutants in Yangtze Estuary water

The Yangtze River, the third largest river in the world, has been polluted by various organic chemicals. In 2018, China decided to implement ecological restoration of the Yangtze River to protect the river. However, except for some conventional pollution indices such as COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and NH₄⁺-N, the overall levels and risks of a wide variety of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the Yangtze Estuary is not clear. Herein, results from a wide-range screening on levels and risks of OMPs in the Yangtze Estuary water were reported. 36 water samples were collected at 9 sites in the Yangtze Estuary in 2012 and 2013. Approximately 1200 OMPs were screened. A total of 131 OMPs were detected with total concentrations ranging from 1.8×10³ to 9.7×10³ ng/L. A tiered strategy was proposed to simplify the assessment of multi-substance ecological risks. Results showed that risk quotient (RQ) for 77% of the OMPs was less than 0.1. For 20 OMPs with RQ ≥ 0.1, joint probabilistic risks were assessed by species sensitivity distribution models. The joint risks as expressed by multi-substance potentially affected fractions are > 5%, and are not insignificant. The results may serve as a benchmark for protecting biodiversity in the Yangtze Estuary, as China motivated to have a fundamental improvement on the environmental quality by 2035.

Application of constructed wetlands in the PAH remediation of surface water: A review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose adverse risks to ecosystems and public health because of their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. As such, the extensive occurrence of PAHs represents a worldwide concern that requires urgent solutions. Wastewater treatment plants are not, however, designed for PAH removal and often become sources of the PAHs entering surface waters. Among the technologies applied in PAH remediation, constructed wetlands (CWs) exhibit several cost-effective and eco-friendly advantages, yet a systematic examination of the application and success of CWs for PAH remediation is missing. This review discusses PAH occurrence, distribution, and seasonal patterns in surface waters during the last decade to provide baseline information for risk control and further treatment. Furthermore, based on the application of CWs in PAH remediation, progress in understanding and optimising PAH-removal mechanisms is discussed focussing on sediments, plants, and microorganisms. Wetland plant traits are key factors affecting the mechanisms of PAH removal in CWs, including adsorption, uptake, phytovolatilization, and biodegradation. The physico-chemical characteristics of PAHs, environmental conditions, wetland configuration, and operation parameters are also reviewed as important factors affecting PAH removal efficiency. Whilst significant progress has been made, several key problems need to be addressed to ensure the success of large-scale CW projects. These include improving performance in cold climates and addressing the toxic threshold effects of PAHs on wetland plants. Overall, this review provides future direction for research on PAH removal using CWs and their large-scale operation for the treatment of PAH-contaminated surface waters.

Anthropogenic disturbances on distribution and sources of pharmaceuticals and personal care products throughout the Jinsha River Basin, China

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are recognized as a group of emerging contaminants closely related to anthropogenic activities, which capture increasing attention worldwide. To evaluate the anthropogenic disturbances on PPCP distribution and sources, this study investigated the distribution and sources of 50 PPCPs along the 2300 km long Jinsha River and revealed different anthropogenic disturbances on PPCPs. Results showed that 40 out of the 50 PPCPs were ubiquitously detected among these river water samples, with the concentrations varied from less than 1 ng/L to more than 500 ng/L. Although most PPCPs concentrations were much lower in the Jinsha River than in highly developed rivers, the prevalence of PPCPs suggested the widespread use and improper disposal of PPCPs in the Jinsha River. The risk assessment also revealed that some PPCPs posed risks to aquatic organisms in the Jinsha River. Anthropogenic activities including human habitation and dam construction had different influence on PPCPs. PPCP distribution varied significantly across the "Hu Huanyong line", indicating human habitation significantly influenced PPCP distribution. Dam construction was insignificant in altering PPCP distribution throughout the Jinsha River. Moreover, the land use index indicated degradation level of multiple lands related to anthropogenic activities and represented the major sources of PPCPs in the Jinsha River. Most PPCPs were correlated with anthropogenic lands, for example, antibiotics, analgesics, and endocrine disrupting chemicals mainly originated from artificial surfaces, whereas other PPCPs mainly originated from cultivated lands. Together, this study indicates the disturbances of multiple anthropogenic activities on PPCP distribution and sources along the Jinsha River, which contributes to PPCP management in rural areas.

Early-life phenanthrene exposure inhibits reproductive ability in adult zebrafish and the mechanism of action

Phenanthrene (Phe) is a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and its ubiquity makes the risk assessment of Phe in aquatic ecosystems important. To assess the long-term effects of early-life Phe exposure on fish, the embryos of the model organism, zrbrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to Phe at 0.05, 0.5, 5 and 50 nmol/L for 96 h and then raised to adulthood in clean water. Gonad development and reproductive functions were investigated in 120 day-old fish. The results showed that the percentage of spermatozoa in males and mature oocytes in females were decreased. The spawned egg numbers and the fertilization rate were reduced when the treated fish were mated with untreated fish. The transcription of genes involved in the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis was downregulated. The levels of both 17β-estradiol and testosterone were significantly decreased in the 5 and 50 nmol/L groups compared with the control group. The methylation levels in the promotor of gnrh3 (encoding gonadotropin releasing hormone) were significantly elevated in the adult fish in the 5 and 50 nmol/L treatments, which might be associated with the downregulation of gnrh3 transcription. These results suggested that embryonic exposure to Phe can inhibit the reproductive ability of adult fish, which should be adequately emphasized in its risk assessment.

Biodegradation of 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate in river sediments and its impact on microbial communities

Numerous studies have evaluated the toxicity and endocrine disrupting properties of organic UV filters for aquatic organisms, but little is known about their biodegradation in river sediments and their impact on microorganisms. We have set up the sterile and microbiological systems in the laboratory, adding 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC), one of organic UV filters included in the list of high yield chemicals, at concentrations of 2, 20 and 200 μg/L, and characterized the microbial community composition and diversity in sediments. Monitoring of EHMC degradation within 30 days revealed that the half-life in the microbial system (3.49 days) was much shorter than that in the sterile system (7.55 days). Two potential degradation products, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 3-methoxyphenol were identified in the microbial system. Furthermore, high-throughput 16s and 18s rRNA gene sequencing showed that Proteobacteria dominated the sediment bacterial assemblages followed by Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Nitrospirae; Eukaryota_uncultured fungus dominated the sediment fungal assemblages. Correlation analysis demonstrated that two bacterium genera (Anaerolineaceae_uncultured and Burkholderiaceae_uncultured) were significantly correlated with the biodegradation of EHMC. These results illustrate the biodegradability of EHMC in river sediments and its potential impact on microbial communities, which can provide useful information for eliminating the pollution of organic UV filters in natural river systems and assessing their potential ecological risks.

Distribution behavior and risk assessment of emerging perfluoroalkyl acids in multiple environmental media at Luoma Lake, East China

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in various environments. This has caused great public concern, particularly in the shallow freshwater lake region, where the lake, rivers, and estuaries form a highly interconnected continuum. However, little is known about the environmental behaviors of PFAAs in the continuum. For the first time, a high-resolution monitoring framework covering the river-estuary-lake continuum of Luoma Lake was built, and the concentrations, sources, and environmental fates of PFAAs were identified and analyzed. The results revealed that the total concentration of PFAAs was at a moderate level in the water and at a high level in the sediment compared to global levels respectively. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was the most abundant PFAA in the continuum. In particular, the ∑PFAA concentration in the particle phase was much higher than that in the sediment phase. Distinct spatial heterogeneities were observed in the behaviors of distribution and the multiphase fate of PFAAs in the continuum, mainly driven by the turbulent mixing during transport, dilution of lake water, and spatial differences of hydrodynamic features and sedimentary properties among the sub-regions. Interestingly, the pH of the sediment and water had significant effects on the water-sediment portioning of PFAAs in contrasting ways. Furthermore, based on the composition of the sediments, four possible migration paths for PFAAs were deduced and the main sources of PFAAs were identified as sewage, domestic, and industrial effluents using the positive matrix factorization model. During the human health assessment, no risk was found under the median exposure scenario; however, under the high exposure scenario, PFAAs posed uncertain risks to human health, which cannot be ignored. This study provides basic information for simulating the fate and transport of PFAAs in the continuum and is significant for developing cost-effective control and remediation strategies in the near future.

Multimedia distribution and trophic transfer of PPCPs in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River

The increasing human presence is having an impact on plateau ecosystems, but the special environment and lack of data make it difficult to assess the real ecological risks of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the river of plateau. The occurrence, distribution and trophic transfer of nineteen PPCPs were investigated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River on the Tibetan Plateau. All the targeted PPCPs were detected in filtrated water, and seventeen PPCPs were detected in the colloid, sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM). The distribution coefficients of colloid-infiltration water (IFW) were 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than those in the SPM-IFW, which were 1-2 orders of magnitude greater than those in the sediment-IFW. Colloids are sinks for PPCPs with up to 78.55% of the water being in the colloidal phase, in which important factors such as protein and protein-like substances are found. PPCPs in the rivers of the plateau showed high bioaccumulation ability. The fugacity-based bioaccumulation model was established and revealed that the fish in the Tibetan Plateau ingested PPCPs mainly through water instead of food and excreted them mainly through metabolism. In addition, the trophic dilution effect in the food web was observed with trophic magnification factors ranging from 0.06 to 0.22. The positive correlation between the K_d in the colloid-IFW and the bioaccumulation factors implied that natural colloids can not only regulate the behaviour of PPCPs in the environment, but also play an important role in bioaccumulation, which may affect the scientific nature of biological risk assessment.

Preparation of bovine serum albumin restricted access octadecyl/phenyl-mixed-functionalized magnetic silica nanoparticles for magnetic solid phase extraction of antidepressants in aquatic products followed by UHPLC-MS/MS

Pharmaceuticals are widespread in aquatic ecosystem, which may pose a potential threat to fish and human. In the study, a robust and reliable magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) based on bovine serum albumin (BSA) restricted access octadecyl/phenyl-mixed-functionalized magnetic silica nanoparticles (BSA-C18/Ph-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ NPs) as sorbent was developed for the extraction of venlafaxine, paroxetine, fluoxetine, norfluoxetine, sertraline and diphenhydramine from the muscle extracts of aquatic products followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) detection. The homemade sorbent showed appropriate compatibility in aqueous solution and good performance in reducing matrix interference of snakehead muscle tissue extracts with absolute matrix effect ranging in 95.4%-105.5%. The protocol was validated in analyte-free snakehead muscle with favorable recoveries ranging in 91.6%-103.6% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 9.5%. Limits of detection (LODs) of the drugs were lower than 0.018 μg kg^-1. Short-term drug-exposure experiments at low and high doses were conducted on snakeheads, and the measured contents of analytes were in the range 0.029-9.58 μg kg^-1 with appropriate recoveries (90.0%-114.0%). The approach was extensively applied for the analysis of twelve species of market-sale aquatic products (total 37 samples), and up to 1.868 and 0.521 μg kg^-1 of diphenhydramine and venlafaxine were measured, respectively. The approach shows remarkable potential in biological complex samples.

Sertraline inhibits top-down forces (predation) in microbial food web and promotes nitrification in sediment

Sertraline is a widely used antidepressant that becomes an aquatic pollutant through metabolic excretion and improper disposal. Determining the impact of sertraline on benthic microbial ecosystems is important for the transformation of river biogenic elements. However, the molecular initiating event induced by sertraline is more readily observed at higher levels, such as the individual or population level of larger organisms, and the effect is not pronounced in benthic organisms, which are directly involved in nitrogen transformation. Therefore, this study used DNA metabarcoding to analyze the effect of sertraline on the microbial ecosystem and material cycles in river sediment through the lens of a microbial food web. The presence of sertraline in the river sediment enhanced the mineralization capacity of nitrogen and increased the accumulation of nitrate in the sediment. Sertraline affected the structure of the microbial food web by stimulating different successions of bacteria and eukaryotes. A structural equation model revealed that sertraline affected the microbial food web model through top-down forces (predation) by reducing the trophic transfer efficiency from metazoans to protozoans. This effect resulted in decreases in the trophic transfer efficiency from protozoans to bacteria and increases in nitrogen mineralization capacity. This was followed by a gradual increase in the nitrification reaction under the action of nitrifying bacteria, increasing the threat to the ecological health of rivers. The results show that sertraline affects the material cycle of river ecosystems and emphasizes that the assessment of the ecological risks of sertraline needs to be considered from the perspective of the material cycle of ecosystems.

Recognition of typical antibiotic residues in environmental media related to groundwater in China (2009-2019)

The potential adverse environmental and health-related impacts of antibiotics are becoming more and more concerning. China is globally the largest antibiotic producer and consumer, possibly resulting in the ubiquity and high detection levels of antibiotics in environmental compartments. Clear status on the concentration levels and spatial distribution of antibiotic contamination in China's environment is necessary to gain insight into the establishment of legal and regulatory frameworks. This study collects information from over 170 papers reporting the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in China's environment. A total of 110 antibiotics were detected, and 28 priority antibiotics were ubiquitous in China in almost all compartments of the environment, excluding the atmosphere. Seven dominant antibiotics in all environment compartments were identified by cluster analysis, including tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ciprofloxacin. Meanwhile, sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, and sulfamethazine were also frequently found in aqueous phases. Among the main basins where antibiotics were detected, the Haihe River Basin had higher median antibiotic concentrations in surface water compared to other basins, while the Huaihe River Basin had higher median concentrations in sediment. The median values of antibiotic concentrations in the sources were as follows: animal manure, 39 μg/kg (microgram per kilogram); WWTP (wastewater treatment plant) sludge, 39 μg/kg; animal wastewater, 156 ng/L (nanogram per liter); WWTP effluent: 15 ng/L. These concentrations are 1 - 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the receptors (soil, 2.1 μg/kg; sediment, 4.7 μg/kg; surface water, 8.1 ng/L; groundwater, 2.9 ng/L), whether in solid or aqueous phases. Based on the number of detected antibiotics in various environmental compartments, animal farms and WWTPs are the main sources of antibiotics, and surface water and sediment are the main receptors of antibiotics. Hierarchical clustering identified the two main pathways of antibiotic transfer in various environmental compartments, which are from animal wastewater/WWTP effluent to surface water/sediment and from animal manure/WWTP sludge to soil/groundwater.
