Abstract
Odorous dioxanes and dioxolanes, a class of cyclic acetals often produced as byproducts in polyester resin manufacturing, are problematic in drinking water treatment due to their low odor thresholds and resistance to conventional treatment technology. Our research focuses on the removal of ten dioxane/dioxolane compounds through oxidation and adsorption processes, exploring the key molecular properties that govern the treatmentability. We discovered that both chlorination and permanganate oxidation were largely ineffective at degrading cyclic acetals, achieving less than 20% removal even at high applicable doses. Conversely, powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption proved to be a more effective method, with a removal of > 90% at a PAC dosage of 10 mg/L for seven out of ten compounds. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) reduced PAC adsorbability for all odorants, but the deterioration level substantially varied and mostly affected by structural flexibility as indicated by the number of rotatable bonds. The results of both the experimental investigation and molecular simulation corroborated the hypothesis that more rotatable bonds (from one to three here) are indicative of greater structural flexibility, which in consequence determines the susceptibility of cyclic acetals to NOM competitive adsorption. Increased structural flexibility could facilitate greater entry into silt-like micropores or achieve preferential adsorption sites with more compatible morphology against NOM competition. When pre-oxidation (chlorination and permanganate oxidation) and adsorption were applied sequentially, additional low molecular weight NOM components produced by pre-oxidation resulted in intensified NOM competition and decreased odorant adsorbability. If this combination is inevitably required for algae and odorant control, it would be beneficial to utilize a wise screen for oxidants and a reduced oxidant dose (less than 2 mg/L) to mitigate the deterioration of odorant adsorption. This study elucidates the roles of structural flexibility in influencing the treatability of dioxanes and dioxolanes, extending beyond the solely well-established effects of hydrophobicity. It also presents rational practice guidelines for the combination of pre-oxidation and adsorption in addressing odor incidents associated with dioxane and dioxolane compounds.

Abstract
Drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in China that pioneered the biological activated carbon (BAC) process have reached 10 years of operation. There has been a renewed focus on biofiltration and the performance of old BAC filters for dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) has been poor, requiring replacement and regeneration of the BAC. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a cost-effective way to improve the water quality of the old BAC filters. To address this, low frequency ultrasound is proposed to enhance DON removal efficiency by BAC. In this study, bench and pilot tests were conducted to investigate the effect of low frequency ultrasound on DON removal by 10-year BAC. The results indicated that low frequency ultrasound significantly improved the DON removal rate increased from 15.83 % to 85.87 % and considerably inhibited the nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) formation potential, which was attributed to a decrease in the production of lipid-like, carbohydrate-like, and protein/amino sugar-like DON. The biomass on the BAC was significantly reduced after ultrasound treatment, and it decreased from 349.56∼388.98 nmol P/gBAC to 310.12∼377.63 nmol P/gBAC, enabling the biofilm thickness to decrease and the surface to become sparse and porous, which was conducive to oxygen and nutrients transfer. The Rhizobials associated with microbe-derived DON were stripped away during ultrasound treatment, which reduced microbe-derived DON associated with amino acids. Additionally, ultrasound regulated metabolic pathways, including amino acids, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and nucleotide metabolism, to improve the osmotic pressure of the biofilm. In short, low frequency ultrasound treatment can enhance BAC biological properties and effectively remove DON and N-DBPs formation potentials, which provides a viable and promising strategy for improving the safety of drinking water in practice.

Abstract
Knowing odor sensory attributes of odorants lies at the core of odor tracking when addressing waterborne odor issues. However, experimental determination covering tens of thousands of odorants in authentic water is not pragmatic due to the complexity of odorant identification and odor evaluation. In this study, we propose the first machine learning (ML) model to predict odor perception/threshold aiming at odorants in water, which can use either molecular structure or MS2 spectra as input features. We demonstrate that model performance using MS2 spectra is nearly as good as that using unequivocal structures, both with outstanding accuracy. We particularly show the model's robustness in predicting odor sensory attributes of unidentified chemicals by using the experimentally obtained MS2 spectra from nontarget analysis on authentic water samples. Interpreting the developed models, we identify the intricate interaction of functional groups as the predominant influence factor on odor sensory attributes. We also highlight the important roles of carbon chain length, molecular weight, etc., in the inherent olfactory mechanisms. These findings streamline the odor sensory attribute prediction and are crucial advancements toward credible tracking and efficient control of off-odors in water.

Abstract
The escalating proliferation of cyanobacteria poses significant taste and odor (T/O) challenges, impacting freshwater ecosystems, public health, and water treatment costs. We examined monthly variations in four T/O compounds from September 2011 to August 2012 in Chaohu Lake's eastern drinking water source (DECL). More importantly, we compared the reported T/O occurrence and the related factors in freshwater bodies worldwide. The assessment of T/O issues indicated a severe and widespread problem, with many cases surpassing odor threshold values. Remarkably, China reported the highest frequency and severity of odor-related problems. A temporal analysis revealed variations in odor occurrences within the same water body across different years, emphasizing the need to consider high values in all seasons for water safety. Globally, T/O issues were widespread, demanding attention to variations within the same water body and across different layers. Algae were crucial contributors to odor compounds, necessitating targeted interventions due to diverse odorant sources and properties. A correlation analysis alone lacked definitive answers, emphasizing the essential role of further validation, such as algae isolation. Nutrients are likely to have influenced the T/O, as GSM and MIB correlated positively with nitrate and ammonia nitrogen in DECL, resulting in proposed control recommendations. This study offers recommendations for freshwater ecosystem management and serves as a foundation for future research and management strategies to address T/O challenges.

Abstract
Assessing the odor risk caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water has been a big challenge for water quality evaluation due to the abundance of odorants in water and the inherent difficulty in obtaining the corresponding odor sensory attributes. Here, a novel odor risk assessment approach has been established, incorporating nontarget screening for odorous VOC identification and machine learning (ML) modeling for odor threshold prediction. Twenty-nine odorous VOCs were identified using two-dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry from four surface water sampling sites. These identified odorants primarily fell into the categories of ketones and ethers, and originated mainly from biological production. To obtain the odor threshold of these odorants, we trained an ML model for odor threshold prediction, which displayed good performance with accuracy of 79%. Further, an odor threshold-based prioritization approach was developed to rank the identified odorants. 2-Methylisoborneol and nonanal were identified as the main odorants contributing to water odor issues at the four sampling sites. This study provides an accessible method for accurate and quick determination of key odorants in source water, aiding in odor control and improved water quality management. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Water odor episodes have been persistent and significant issues worldwide, posing severe challenges to water treatment plants. Unpleasant odors in aquatic environments are predominantly caused by the occurrence of a wide range of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Given the vast number of newly-detected VOCs, experimental identification of the key odorants becomes difficult, making water odor issues complex to control. Herein, we propose a novel approach integrating nontarget analysis with machine learning models to accurate and quick determine the key odorants in waterbodies. We use the approach to analyze four samples with odor issues in Changsha, and prioritized the potential odorants.

Abstract
The efficient removal of 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB), a typical odour component, in water treatment plants (WTPs), poses a great challenge to conventional water treatment technology due to its chemical stability. In this study, the combination of ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) and chlorine (UV-LED/chlorine) was exploited for 2-MIB removal, and the role of ultraviolet (UV) wavelength was investigated systematically. The results showed that UV or chlorination alone did not degrade 2-MIB effectively, and the UV/chlorine process could degrade 2-MIB efficiently, following the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The 275 nm UV exhibited higher 2-MIB degradation efficiency in this UV-LED/chlorine system than 254 nm UV, 265 nm UV and 285 nm UV due to the highest mole adsorption coefficient and quantum yield of chlorine in 275 nm UV. ·OH and ·Cl produced in the 275 nm UV/chlorine system played major roles in 2-MIB degradation. HCO3- and Natural organic matter (NOM), prevalent in water, consumed ·OH and ·Cl, thus inhibiting the 2-MIB degradation by UV-LED/chlorine. In addition, NOM and 2-MIB could form a photonic competition effect. The degradation of 2-MIB by UV-LED/chlorine was done mainly through dehydration and demethylation, and odorous intermediates, such as camphor, were produced. 2-MIB was degraded through the α bond fracture and six-membered ring opening to form saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons and aldehydes. Four DBPs, chloroform (CF), trichloroacetaldehyde (TCE), trichloroacetone (TCP) and dichloroacetone (DCP), were mainly generated, and CF was the most significant by-product.

Abstract
Fishy odor, as an offensive and unpleasant odor, could occur in drinking water source with poor nutrition, it is usually considered to be associated with odor-producing microalgae. However, the specific relations among fishy odor, fishy odorants and responsible microalgae were not elucidated comprehensively. In this paper, the odor-causing compounds generated from six microalgae with fishy odor characteristic, isolated in drinking water source Tongyu River, were identified simultaneously. The sensory evaluation result indicated that Tongyu River was principally related to fishy odor (odor intensity 6.5-7.6). Correspondingly, seven, nine, seven, six, seven and seven olfactory detection peaks (ODP) were screened by combining data of GC/O/MS and GC/GC/TOFMS in Cyclotella, Cryptomonas ovate, Melosira, Dinobryon sp., Synedra and Ochromonas sp., which were isolated in Tongyu River and cultured in laboratory. Totally twenty odor-causing compounds, including hexanal, 2-hexenal, 3-hexen-1-ol, heptanal, 1-octen-3-one, 2,4-heptadienal, 2-tetradecanone, 3,5-octadien-2-one, octanal, 1-octen-3-ol, 2-octenal, nonanal, 2,4-octadienal, 2-nonenal, decanal, 2,6-nonadienal, 2-decenal, undecanal, 2,4-decadienal and dodecanal, were screened and identified in all isolated microalgae. Additionally, fishy odor intensity for all identified microalgae increased obviously as microalgae cell number increased and microalgae cell ruptured in cultivation cycles through pearson and spearman correlation analysis. For the first time, twenty odor-causing compounds associating with fishy odor were recognized from six isolated microalgae, which would provide more scientific basis and theoretical support for preventing and treating fishy odor episode of drinking water source.

Abstract
Powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption is regarded as an efficient method for removing odorants from drinking water. However, in eutrophic aquatic environments, the presence of algal organic matter (AOM) produced by cyanobacteria considerably impedes the adsorption of odorous compounds by activated carbon. This study focused on investigating the adsorption characteristics of three representative odorants: 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), β-cyclocitral (β-cyclo), and butyl sulfide (BS) by PAC and the effects of AOM on the PAC adsorption of odorants. The removal of the three odorants reached 83.5-97.5% at a PAC dosage of 10 mg/L after 12 h of exposure in a competition-free scenario. The adsorption kinetics demonstrated higher conformity (R2 > 0.9) with the pseudo-second-order model, whereas the adsorption capacity exhibited stronger conformity (R2 > 0.9) with the Freundlich model. The presence of AOM resulted in varying levels of competition for PAC for the adsorption of the three odorants. As the concentration of AOM increased from 0 to 5 mg C/L, the removal of 2-MIB was the most affected (from 83.5% to 10.0%), followed by β-cyclo (from 86.6% to 55.0%), and BS (from 97.5% to 92.0%). The competitive adsorption of AOM at the molecular level was studied using density functional theory (DFT). The DFT results suggested that odorants with higher and more uniformly distributed electrostatic potentials exhibited a heightened affinity for PAC adsorption and a diminished susceptibility to disruption caused by AOM. This study provides valuable insights into the mitigation of odorous compounds during drinking water purification.

Abstract
The problem of taste and odor (T&O) in drinking water is a widespread societal concern and highlights substantial challenges related to the detection and evaluation of odor in water. In this study, the portable electronic nose PEN3, which is equipped with ten different heated metal sensors, was applied to analyze its applicability, feasibility and application scenarios for the detection of typical odorants, such as 2-methylisobornel (2-MIB), geosmin (GSM), β-cyclocitral, β-ionone, and other T&O compounds in source water, while avoiding uncertainties and instability related to manual inspection. All the T&O compounds could be effectively differentiated by principal component analysis (PCA). Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) showed that the odors varied greatly between different samples and could be effectively distinguished. As the odorant concentration increased, the sensor response intensity of the primary identification sensors R6 and R8 increased with a significant positive correlation. For Microcystis aeruginosa, an algae that produces odorants, PCA could distinguish the odors of algae at a series of densities at different concentrations. The responses of R10 showed a significant increase with increasing algae density, implying the production of more aliphatic hydrocarbons and other odor compounds. The results indicated that the electronic nose could provide a promising alternative to traditional unstable and complex detection methods for the detection of odorous substances in surface water and early warning of odor events. This study aimed to provide technical support for rapid monitoring and early warning of odorants in source water management.

Abstract
Disgusting fishy odor could break out inside oligotrophic drinking waterbody in winter with low temperature. Nevertheless, fishy odor-producing algae and corresponding fishy odorants were not very clear, odor contribution of fishy odorant and odor-producing algae to overall odor profile were also not well understood. In this study, the fishy odorants, produced by four algae separated from Yanlong Lake, were identified simultaneously. Odor contribution of identified odorant, separated algae to overall fishy odor profile were both evaluated. The results indicated Yanlong Lake was mainly associated with fishy odor (flavor profile analysis (FPA) intensity: 6), eight, five, five and six fishy odorants were identified and determined in Cryptomonas ovate, Dinobryon sp., Synura uvella, Ochromonas sp., respectively, which were separated and cultured from water source. Totally sixteen odorants with concentration range of 90-880 ng/L, including hexanal, heptanal, 2,4-heptadienal, 1-octen-3-one, 1-octen-3-ol, octanal, 2-octenal, 2,4-octadienal, nonanal, 2-nonenal, 2,6-nonadienal, decanal, 2-decenal, 2,4-decadienal, undecanal, 2-tetradecanone, were verified in separated algae and associated with fishy odor. Although more odorants' odor activity value (OAV) were lower than one, approximately 89%, 91%, 87%, 90% of fishy odor intensities could be explained by reconstituting identified odorants for Cryptomonas ovate, Dinobryon sp., Synura uvella, Ochromonas sp., respectively, suggesting synergistic effect could exist among identified odorants. By calculating and evaluating total odorant production, total odorant OAV and cell odorant yield of separated algae, odor contribution rank to overall fishy odor should be Cryptomonas ovate (28.19%), Dinobryon sp. (27.05%), Synura uvella (24.27%), Ochromonas sp. (20.49%). This is the first study for identifying fishy odorants from four actually separated odor-producing algae simultaneously, this is also for the first time evaluating and explaining odor contribution of identified odorant, separated algae to overall odor profile comprehensively, this study will supply more understanding for controlling and managing fishy odor in drinking water treatment plant.

Abstract
Swampy/septic odor caused by thioethers has become the main taste and odor (T&O) problem in drinking water of China. Improving its removal performance by commonly traditional water treatment process is significant. In our study, we have found that pre-oxidation could modify the background dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties and thus improve the coagulation performance of thioethers, increasing the coagulation removal rates by 1.5-3 times. Particularly, after pre-ozonation only protein-like substances remained, and thioethers removal was 1.5 times higher than that after pre-chlorination (only coagulation not including oxidation). Compared with humic acid (HA), the thioethers compounds removal efficiencies under bovine serum albumin (BSA) as background DOM was increased by 0.3-3 times. Through Freundlich model analysis, the binding strength of BSA (KF = 20.712, at 298 K) to dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) was enhanced by 60 % compared to HA (KF = 12.778, at 298 K). According to thermodynamic parameters, the binding effect between HA/BSA and thioethers compounds was mainly van der Waals forces and hydrogen bond. BSA with more amino structure and oxygen groups was more easily to adsorb DMDS through hydrogen bond and thus achieved better coagulation performance. Therefore, pre-ozonation combined with coagulation was suggested to be more suitable for thioethers compounds control.

Abstract
A sensitive and effective method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 14 odorous compounds in drinking water using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled with headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) pretreatment. The influencing factors including SPME fiber, ionic strength, temperature and time on the pretreatment procedure were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized conditions, 10 mL of the samples added with 1.0 g sodium chloride was extracted by CAR/PDMS fiber at 60 °C for 30 min and then desorbed at 280 °C for 3 min. The analytes achieved good linearity as the mass concentrations were in the range of 0.0020-10.0 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9990. The limits of detection (LODs) ranging between 0.2 and 50 ng L-1 were lower than the olfactory threshold of these studied compounds. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained ranging from 84.8% to 110.6%, and good reproducibility indicated by relative standard deviation (RSD) in the range of 0.50-9.5% was obtained as well. The proposed method was convenient, sensitive and accurate, which was suitable for the routine monitoring 14 odorous compounds in water.

Abstract
Biogenic taste and odour (T&O) have become a global concern for water utilities, due to the increasing frequency of algal blooms and other microbial events arising from the combined effects of climate change and eutrophication. Microbially-produced T&O compounds impact source waters, drinking water treatment plants, and drinking water distribution systems. It is important to manage across the entire biogenic T&O pathway to identify key risk factors and devise strategies that will safeguard the quality of drinking water in a changing world, since the presence of T&O impacts consumer confidence in drinking water safety. This study provides a critical review of current knowledge on T&O-causing microbes and compounds for proactive management, including the identification of abiotic risk factors in source waters, a discussion on the effectiveness of existing T&O barriers in drinking water treatment plants, an analysis of risk factors for biofilm growth in water distribution systems, and an assessment of the impacts of T&O on consumers. The fate of biogenic T&O in drinking water systems is tracked from microbial production pathways, through the release of intracellular T&O by cell lysis, to the treatment of microbial cells and dissolved T&O. Based on current knowledge, five impactful research and management directions across the T&O pathway are recommended.

Abstract
Geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) are representative musty/earthy odor compounds commonly present in surface water. In present study, the degradation of GSM and 2-MIB subject to different UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including UV/H2O2, UV/S2O82-, UV/chlorine, and UV/chloramine, in a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was conducted in a photoreactor with reflective inner surfaces and compared with that in an environmental water sample. A dynamic model to predict the degradation of GSM and 2-MIB in the photoreactor with reflective inner surfaces in the four UV-based AOPs was developed applying the second-order rate constants for the GSM and 2-MIB with primary reactive species (i.e., •OH, •Cl, and •SO4-) determined in this study. The model was proven to successfully simulate the degradation of GSM and 2-MIB. In addition, 8, 7, 8, and 11 degradation intermediates were detected from UV/H2O2, UV/S2O82-, UV/chlorine, and UV/chloramine in this study, and possible degradation pathways were proposed. This study is the first to report the degradation kinetics and formation products of GSM and 2-MIB in UV/chloramine. Research based on photoreactors with reflective inner surfaces may provide some guidance for eliminating GSM and 2-MIB in UV-based AOPs for full-scale engineering applications.

Abstract
Volatile organic sulfur compounds (VSCs) released by algae are of great significance in sulfur cycle, climate regulation and biological information transmission, and they also caused taste and odor in freshwaters. However, the categories, sources, and environmental regulatory factors of VSCs in freshwaters were less known. Here, we show that eight common freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis, which bloom in freshwaters over the world, are found to be important producers of VSCs. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and isopropyl methyl sulfide (IPMS) are the main VSCs with the highest concentrations 184.81 nmol/L, 162.01 nmol/L and 101.55 nmol/L, respectively. The amount of VSCs released from those Microcystis varied greatly, M. elabens, M. panniformis and M. flos-aquae released the largest amount of VSCs (1260.52 nmol S/L, 1154.75 nmol S/L and 670.58 nmol S/L), and M. wesenbergii had the smallest release amount. We also found for the first time that phosphorus (P) was one of the important factors for the regulation VSCs from most Microcystis. P can elevate the release of DMS by promoting the biomass and DMS yields of most Microcystis in the range 0.05 mg/L to 0.5 mg/L. Similar results were also found in 16 lakes at three different spatiotemporal scales. Overall, we revealed that the common freshwater Microcystis were able to release diverse thioethers, and the major VSCs were significantly influenced by water P concentrations. In the context of global freshwater eutrophication and Microcystis bloom, freshwater cyanobacteria driven sulfur cycle and water odor will probably be further strengthened.

Abstract
In recent years, dioxanes and dioxolanes have been intermittently detected in water environment and have caused several offensive drinking water odor incidents worldwide. In this study, the co-occurrence of eight dioxanes, twelve dioxolanes and bis(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) ether was investigated in Huangpu River watershed to explore potential sources and contributions to septic/chemical odor. Totally 8 dioxanes and dioxolanes were detected in river, with 1,4-dioxane (212 -8310 ng/L) and 2,5,5-trimethyl-1,3-dioxane (n.d.-133 ng/L) as the dominated dioxanes, 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane (49.5 -2278 ng/L), 2-ethy-4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane (n.d.-167 ng/L) and 1,3-dioxolane (n.d.-225 ng/L) as the major dioxolanes. Bis(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) ether was detected (n.d.-1094 ng/L) with significant correlation with dioxanes and dioxolanes, illustrating their similar polyester resin-related industrial origins. 2-Ethy-4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane, 2,5,5-trimethyl-1,3-dioxane and bis(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) ether with individual maximum odor activity value above 1, should contribute to septic/chemical odor in Huangpu River water. The increased concentrations of these chemicals in the downstream of some industrial areas illustrated the association with industrial discharge. Fates in a waterworks using the river water as source water were further explored. The adopting ozone-biological activated carbon treatment could permit a relatively high removal for bis(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) ether and 2,5,5-trimethyl-1,3-dioxane (> 80%), while limited removal for other chemicals. This study provides valuable information for the management of drinking source water and water environment.

Abstract
Occurrences of odor compounds in drinking water reservoirs are considered as a nuisance by the water industry. Through the high-frequency monitoring of Tianmuhu Reservoir, a drinking water source for a city with a population of 700,000, we found that odor compounds seasonal dynamics were significantly related to phytoplankton succession, which was controlled by hydrometeorological process. 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) was significantly related to Aphanizomenon sp. (r = 0.51). When the surface water temperature exceeded 12 ℃, 2-MIB concentration may exceed the odor threshold concentration. With the proliferation of Aphanizomenon sp. in spring, 2-MIB concentration reached 87.22 ng/L. After late spring heavy rain, 2-MIB concentration sharply decreased to 3.19 ng/L. As the temperature increased at the end of the rainy season, Aphanizomenon sp. biomass increased to 2.09 mg/L, and 2-MIB concentration increased to 40.16 ng/L. These results showed that the concentration of odor compounds in shallow layer varied greatly because odor compounds mainly originated from phytoplankton and were susceptible to short-term hydrometeorological processes. However, the concentrations of odor compounds in deep layer were relatively insensitive to short-term weather processes. This study will improve the understanding of seasonal changes in odor compounds at different depths, and provide useful information for reservoir managers to prevent odor problems.

Abstract
Sudden odor incidents occurring in the source water have been a severe problem for water suppliers. In order to apply emergency control measures effectively, it is necessary to identify the target compounds responsible for odor incidents rapidly. The present work identified the odorants and explored emergency disposal mechanisms for sudden and severe odors in the QT River's drinking water source (HZ city, China). Medicinal, chemical, septic, and musty odors with strong intensities were detected in the source water. The effect of conventional treatments of drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) on odors' removal was limited, which was evident by the presence of medicinal, chemical, and musty odors with moderate intensities in the effluent of DWTP. Total seventeen odorants were identified successfully in the source water of QT River and the effluent of DWTP. The measured OAVs and reconstituting the identified odorants explained 87, 87, 89, and 94% of medicinal, chemical, septic, and musty odors, respectively, in the source water of the QT River and 90, 87, and 88% of medicinal, chemical, and musty odors in the effluent. Styrene, phenol, 2-chlorophenol, 2-tert-butylphenol, and 2-methylphenol were associated with the medicinal odor, while propyl sulfide, diethyl disulfide, propyl disulfide, and indole were related to the septic odor. Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) were responsible for the musty odor, and cyclohexanone, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, and nitrobenzene were involved with the chemical odor. Based on the characteristics of identified odorants, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was applied to control the odors in the QT River. The results indicated that the medicinal, chemical, septic, and musty odors could be removed entirely after adding 15 mg/L PAC, which effectively controlled emergency odor problems. Overall, the study would offer a scientific basis and operational reference for emergency odor management and control in DWTP with similar complicated odor incidents.

Abstract
Reservoirs are an important type of drinking water source for megacities, while lots of reservoirs are threatened by odor problems during certain seasons. The influencing factors of odor compounds in reservoirs are still unclear. During August 2019, a nationwide survey investigating the distribution of odor compounds in reservoirs used as drinking water sources was conducted on seven reservoirs. 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and geosmin were detected in almost every reservoir, and some odor compound concentrations even exceeded the odor threshold concentration. The average concentration of 2-MIB was 2.68 ng/L, and geosmin was 3.63 ng/L. The average chlorophyll a concentration was 8.25 μg/L. The dominant genera of phytoplankton in these reservoirs belonged to cyanobacteria and diatom. Statistical analysis showed that odor compound concentration was significantly related to the chlorophyll a concentration and indicated that the odor compounds mainly came from phytoplankton. The concentration of odor compounds in the euphotic zone was significantly related to phytoplankton species and biomass. Therefore, the odor compound concentrations in the subsurface chlorophyll maxima layer was generally higher than in the surface layer. However, the odor compounds in the hypolimnion layer were related to the density current. This research suggests that both phytoplankton proliferation events and heavy storm events are important risk factors increasing odor compounds in reservoirs. Control of algal bloom, in-situ profile monitoring system and depth-adjustable pumping system will greatly reduce the risk of odor problems in reservoirs using as water supplies for large cities.

Abstract
Lake Karaoun is the largest artificial lake in Lebanon and serves multiple purposes. Recently, intensive cyanobacterial blooms have been reported in the lake, raising safety and aesthetic concerns related to the presence of cyanotoxins and cyanobacterial taste and odor (T&O) compounds, respectively. Here, we communicate for the first time results from a recent investigation by LC-MS/MS covering multiple cyanotoxins (microcystins (MCs), anatoxin-a, cylindrospermopsin, nodularin) in water and fish collected between 2019 and 2020. Eleven MCs were identified reaching concentrations of 211 and 199 μg/L for MC-LR and MC-YR, respectively. Cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a and nodularin were not detected. The determination of the total MCs was also carried out by ELISA and Protein Phosphatase Inhibition Assay yielding comparable results. Molecular detection of cyanobacteria (16S rRNA) and biosynthetic genes of toxins were carried out by qPCR. Untargeted screening analysis by GC-MS showed the presence of T&O compounds, such as β-cyclocitral, β-ionone, nonanal and dimethylsulfides that contribute to unpleasant odors in water. The determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) showed the presence of anthropogenic pollutants, mostly dichloromethane and toluene. The findings are important to develop future monitoring schemes in order to assess the risks from cyanobacterial blooms with regard to the lake’s ecosystem and its uses.

Abstract
Odors and tastes have become universal problems related to drinking water quality. In addition to the typical odor problems caused by algae or microorganisms, the occurrence of odors derived from drinking water disinfection have attracted attention. The chlor(am)ination-derived odor substances have certain toxicity and odor-causing characteristics, and would enter the tap water through water distribution systems, directly affecting drinking water safety and customer experience. This study provided a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, detection, and control of odor substances derived from drinking water chlor(am)ination disinfection. The occurrence and formation mechanisms of several typical types of disinfection derived odor substances were summarized, including haloanisoles, N-chloroaldimines, iodotrihalomethanes, and halophenoles. They are mainly derived from specific precursors such as halophenols, anisoles, and amino acids species during the disinfection or distribution networks. In addition, the change of disinfectant during chlor(am)ination was also one of the causes of disinfection odors. Due to the extremely low odor threshold concentrations (OTCs) of these odor substances, the effective sample pre-enrichment for instrument identification and quantification are essential. The control strategies of odor problems mainly include adsorption, chemical oxidation, and combined processes such as ozonation and biological activated carbon processes (O3/BAC) and ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs). Finally, the challenges and possible future research directions in this research field were discussed and proposed.

TiO2-Powdered Activated Carbon (TiO2/PAC) for Removal and Photocatalytic Properties of 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) in Water. WATER 2021. Abstract
2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) is a common taste and odor compound caused by off-flavor secondary metabolites, which represents one of the greatest challenges for drinking water utilities worldwide. A TiO2-coated activated carbon (TiO2/PAC) has been synthesized using the sol-gel method. A new TiO2/PAC photocatalyst has been successfully employed in photodegradation of 2-MIB under UV light irradiation. In addition, the combined results of XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR and UV-Vis suggested that the nano-TiO2 had been successfully loaded on the surface of PAC. Experimental results of 2-MIB removal indicated that the adsorption capacities of PAC for 2-MIB were higher than that of TiO2/PAC. However, in the natural organic matter (NOM) bearing water, the removal efficiency of 2-MIB by TiO2/PAC and PAC were 97.8% and 65.4%, respectively, under UV light irradiation. Moreover, it was shown that the presence of NOMs had a distinct effect on the removal of MIB by TiO2/PAC and PAC. In addition, a simplified equivalent background compound (SEBC) model could not only be used to describe the competitive adsorption of MIB and NOM, but also represent the photocatalytic process. In comparison to other related studies, there are a few novel composite photocatalysts that could efficiently and rapidly remove MIB by the combination of adsorption and photocatalysis.

Abstract
Ozone and biological activated carbon (BAC) are known to be effective at removing odors in drinking water. However, the specific variations in complex odors and odorants along the course of advanced treatments in full-scale drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) have remained unclear. In this paper, the migration of odors and odorants through pre-ozonation, sedimentation, post-ozonation, and BAC treatment processes were studied from January to December 2019 in a DWTP. The results indicated that septic, musty, and chemical odors with intensities of 6-6.7, 6-7.5, 4-5 could be removed by both ozonation and BAC, while grassy, fishy odors with intensities of 3.3-4.8, 2.3-5.8 could not be removed until the BAC step. Twenty-four odorants identified in raw water were classified as musty (2-methylisoborneol, geosmin), chemical (e.g. indane, eucalyptol), septic (e.g. dimethyl disulfide, pentanethiol), fishy (2,4-decadienal) and grassy (nonanal, decanal) odor compounds. It is noteworthy that eleven additional odorants were produced after ozonation; in addition, the concentrations of fishy and grassy odorants were increased after ozonation, and the concentrations of musty, septic, fishy, and grassy odorants were increased after sedimentation, suggesting that sedimentation and ozonation should be carefully managed. BAC was the most effective at removing the above odorants simultaneously. This study would be helpful for providing more insights into the migration of odorants along treatment processes and understanding the mitigation of odors in DWTPs using raw waters with complex odors.

Abstract
The odor problems in river-type micro-polluted water matrixes are complicated compared to those in lakes and reservoirs. For example, the TY River in Jiangsu Province has been associated with complex odors, whereas the specific odor compounds were not clear. In this paper, a comprehensive study on characterizing the odors and odorants in source water from the TY River was conducted. Six odor types, including earthy, marshy, fishy, woody, medicinal, and chemical odors, were detected for the first time; correspondingly, thirty-three odor-causing compounds were identified. By means of evaluating odor activity values and reconstituting the identified odorants, 95, 93, 92, 90, 89 and 88% of the earthy, marshy, fishy, woody, medicinal and chemical odors in the source waters could be clarified. Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol were associated with earthy odor, while amyl sulfide, dibutyl sulfide, propyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide and indole were related to marshy odor. The major woody and fishy odor compounds were vanillin, geraniol, β-cyclocitral and 2,4-decadienal, 2-octenal, respectively. Medicinal and chemical odors were mainly caused by 2-chlorophenol, 4-bromophenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol and naphthalene, and 1,4-dichlorobenzene, respectively. This is the first study in which six odor types and thirty-three odorants were identified simultaneously in a river-type micro-polluted water source, which can offer a reference for odor management in drinking water treatment plants.

Abstract
Endogenous pollution from sediments is gradually becoming a critical pollution source of the drinking water reservoir. Odorants can be released from sediments into the overlying water which further deteriorate the water quality of the drinking water reservoir. In this work, we set the sediment-overlying water systems under various water pH (6.5, 8 and 9), temperature (4, 20 and 30 °C) during 30 days and intermittent or continuous hydraulic disturbances (at 100 r/min or 200 r/min) in 5 days, and investigated the dynamic release of odorants from the drinking water reservoir sediments via using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HSPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The result shows that weakly alkaline environment slightly but not significantly increased the concentration of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) in the overlying water. Furthermore, low temperature promoted the release of bis(2-chloroisopropyl) ether (BCIE) and geosmin to 108.36 and 18.98 ng/L, respectively, while high temperature facilitated the DMDS release to 20.33 ng/L. Notably, hydraulic disturbances drastically elevated the level of seven odorants released from the sediments. Specially, benzaldehyde exhibited highest concentration at 260.50 ng/L. The continuous disturbance greatly enhanced the release of benzaldehyde, DMDS, dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS), BCIE and 1,4-dichloro-benzene (1,4-DCB) from sediments with a positive disturbance speed-dependence. However, the intermittent disturbance promoted higher level of geosmin in the overlying water compared to the continuous disturbance. Only continuous hydraulic disturbance at high speed could lead to the release of ethylbenzene from sediments, which was up to 4.89 ng/L in 12 h.

Abstract
Swampy/septic odor caused by various sulfides is one of the most frequently encountered odor problems in drinking water. However, even though it is much more offensive, few studies have specifically focused on swampy/septic odor compared to the extensively studied musty/earthy problems. In this work, four sulfide odorants, diamyl sulfide (DAS), dipropyl sulfide (DPS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and diethyl disulfide (DEDS), were selected to evaluate the treatment performance of different oxidation processes in drinking water. The results demonstrated that DMDS, DEDS, DPS and DAS could be oxidized effectively by KMnO4, NaClO and ClO2. The oxidation processes could be well described by the second-order kinetic model, in which k values of selected sulfides followed the order DMDS≈DEDS ≪ DPS≈DAS. As for the three oxidants, the order of reactivity was KMnO4 ≪ ClO2 < NaClO, which was also verified in raw water. The results of oxidation treatability, reaction kinetics and mechanisms confirmed that the characteristics of the central sulfur atom rather than the side chain is the decisive factor in controlling the oxidation rate and transformation pathway of sulfides. The transformation products and pathways were significantly different for the three oxidants. Sulfones (DPSO, DASO) were always formed by cycloaddition reactions during KMnO4 oxidation, yet recombination reactions proceeded during ClO2 oxidation and formed more products, such as MADS, DADS and EADS. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the differences in transformation pathways were caused by the variations in the activity of the oxidants and sulfides. Finally, NaClO was certified as the most effective oxidant for controlling sulfide odorants in drinking water treatment.

Abstract
The odor problems in plain reservoirs are more complex compared to valley reservoirs and ground water reservoirs. Just as YL Reservoir with wetlands ecosystem in Lixiahe Plain, Jiangsu Province has been suffering from complex odors, however, the odorants were unclear. In this study, a systematic study on odorants characterization and evaluation of plain YL reservoir was accomplished. Totally musty, septic, fishy, chemical and grassy odors were first identified simultaneously, twenty-four odorants were identified correspondingly. According to odor activity value ranking, 2-methylisoborneol and geosmin, with odor activity values of 14-18 and 2.5-3.8, were major musty odorants, while bis(2-chloroisopropyl) ether, dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, pentanethiol and indole, with odor activity values of 15.3-18.8, 1-1.3, 1.5-2.3, 2-3 and 0.7-0.9, were major septic compounds. Fishy and grassy odors were associated with 2,4-decadienal, hexanal, nonanal, decanal, benzaldehyde and β-cyclocitral, while chemical odor was related to indane, eucalyptol, 2-nitrophenol, 2-methylphenol, tetramethylpyrazine, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, p-xylene and ethylbenzene. By reconstituting tests, 98, 95, 88, 85 and 81 % of musty, septic, fishy, chemical and grassy characteristics in source water could be explained. It was notable that wetlands ecosystem has almost no effect on odor removal. This study would offer more understandings and supports for odors's control in such source waters.

Abstract
In this study, the adsorption capacities of two common odor compounds, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), onto nine common types of powdered activated carbon (PAC) were comprehensively compared to screen the critical surface chemical properties affecting the adsorption performance. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of all the PACs for DMDS were generally lower than those for 2-MIB. The Spearman's rank correlation analysis indicated that the adsorption capacity for 2-MIB did not have any correlation with the PAC surface sites, while the DMDS adsorption capacity was positively related to the number of basic sites. The effect of the PAC basic sites on the DMDS adsorption was further verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculation in two adsorption modes (facial mode and edge mode). The graphene structure in the edge mode was the most favorable for DMDS adsorption with the lowest adsorption enthalpy, followed by the ketone-doped structure under the facial mode. An independent gradient model indicated that van der Waals forces were dominant in the DMDS adsorption. Moreover, thermal modification was conducted to further prove the relationship between the basic sites and the DMDS adsorption. After thermal modification, the PAC with more basic sites and graphene structures was found to be more effective for DMDS adsorption. Overall, this study could offer guidance for water treatment plants with respect to the selection of PAC to solve the odor problems caused by various compounds (e.g., DMDS or 2-MIB), and the modification of PAC, aiming at more efficient odor removal.

Abstract
Though the ozone-activated carbon process has been widely applied for drinking water purification, little is known about how ozone-modified natural organic matter (NOM) competes with micropollutants in activated carbon adsorption. In this study, three natural waters and one synthetic water (standard humics solution) with highly heterogeneous NOM compositions were employed to investigate the interference of ozonated NOM with the adsorption of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). Analysis using liquid chromatography with online carbon and UV254 detection (LC-OCD-UVD) revealed that ozonation led to various disintegration patterns of macromolecules in NOM, and UV absorbance was reduced markedly for nearly all NOM fractions. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption experiments showed that increasing ozone consumption coincided with reducing NOM competition against MIB in the three natural waters, as expressed by the fitted initial concentrations of the equivalent background compound (c0,EBC). In the synthetic water, in contrast, competition increased under low/moderate specific ozone consumptions and then decreased with further elevation of ozone consumptions. Regarding the significance on affecting ozonated NOM interference, aromaticity reduction outweighed formation of low molecular weight (LMW) organics in most cases, enhancing MIB adsorption capacity. However, disintegration of the humics fraction with larger molecular weight (1,103 g/mol, as compared to 546-697 g/mol in three natural waters) into smaller, more competitive fractions caused the observed initial deteriorated MIB adsorption in synthetic water. A superior correlation between c0,EBC and the UV absorbance of LMW organics (R2 = 0.93) over concentrations of LMW organics underlined the importance of the aromatic properties in competitive adsorption projection for ozone pretreated natural waters. Furthermore, the change of relative concentration of UV absorbing compounds during ozonation could help estimate the decrease of c0,EBC, which could be a promising tool for waterworks to adjust PAC doses for MIB removal in ozonated waters.

Abstract
Eutrophic freshwater lake ecosystems are receiving increasing public attention due to a global increase in large-scale harmful cyanobacterial blooms in surface waters. However, the contribution of phytodetritus accumulation in benthic sediments post-bloom remains unclear. In this study, field investigations were performed using microsensors to evaluate benthic phytodetritus mats by measuring TOC/TN ratios, pigments, biodegradable compounds and odorants as descriptive parameters. Results show that the massive amount of phytodetritus trapped by aquatic plants gradually evolved into benthic cyanobacterial detritus mats, which were characterized as anoxic, reductive and low pH. It was confirmed that the occurrence of odorants is more serious in the detritus mats due to decay and decomposition of the accumulated phytodetritus. The mean odorant content in the vegetated zones was 3-52 times higher than that in the unvegetated zones. The dominant odorants were dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS), β-ionone and β-cyclocitral, with mean contents of 52.38 ng·(g·dw)-1, 162.20 ng·(g·dw)-1 and 307.51 ng·(g·dw)-1, respectively, in the sediment. In addition, odorant production appears to be associated with the distribution of biodegradable compounds in the sediment. This is supported by the marked correlation observed between biodegradable compounds and odorants. Multiple regression analysis showed that biodegradable compounds can be used as indicators to predict odorant content in the sediment. It is noteworthy that the odorant trend in the water column and sediment is symmetrical, indicating a risk of diffusion from the sediment to the water column. This study helps to clarifying the contributions of benthic cyanobacterial detritus mats to odorant production in shallow eutrophic lakes. The information provided herein may also be useful for future management of aquatic ecosystems.
