Antibiotics in wastewater: From its occurrence to the biological removal by environmentally conscious technologies

A microbiome-biochar composite synergistically eliminates the environmental risks of antibiotic mixtures and their toxic byproducts

This study developed a continuous reactor system employing a hybrid hydrogel composite synthesized using a complex sludge microbiome and an adsorbent (HSA). This HSA-based system effectively eliminated the environmental risks associated with a mixture of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole, which exhibited higher toxicity in combination than individually at environmentally relevant levels. Analytical chemistry experiments revealed the in-situ generation of various byproducts (BPs) within the bioreactor system, with two of these BPs recording toxicity levels that surpassed those of their parent compound. The HSA approach successfully prevented the functional microbiome from being washed out of the reactor, while HSA efficiently removed antibiotic residues in their original and BP forms through synergistic adsorptive and biotransformation mechanisms, ultimately reducing the overall ecotoxicity. The use of HSA thus demonstrates promise not only as a mean to reduce the threat posed by toxic antibiotic residues to aquatic ecosystems but also as a practical solution to operational challenges, such as biomass loss/washout, that are frequently encountered in various environmental bioprocesses.

Micropollutants (ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin) remediation from wastewater through laccase derived from spent mushroom waste: Fate, toxicity, and degradation

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics frequently found in environmental matrices (wastewater treatment plants, hospital wastewater, industrial wastewater and surface wastewater) causes potential threat to the environment. Enzymatic treatment for degradation of antibiotics from environmental matrices is a green and sustainable approach. Focusing on this, this study aimed to degrade two frequently found fluroquinolone emergent pollutants, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin from wastewater. The trinuclear cluster of copper ions present in laccase has the ability to effectively remove organic micropollutants (OMPs). The uniqueness of this study is that it utilizes laccase enzyme extracted from spent mushroom waste (SMW) of P. florida for degradation of ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin and to achieve highest degradation efficiency various parameters were tweaked such as pH (3-6), temperature (30 °C and 50 °C), and ABTS (0.05, 0.6, and 1 mM) concentration. The results showed that the most effective degradation of ciprofloxacin (86.12-75.94%) and norfloxacin (83.27-65.94%) was achieved in 3 h at pH 4.5, temperature 30 °C, and 2,2'-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), 0.05 mM concentration. Nevertheless, achieving degradation at 50 °C for both antibiotics, indicates thermostability nature of laccase (P. florida). Further, the fate of transformed products obtained from laccase mediated degradation was confirmed by liquid chromatography (LC-MS). Both the antibiotics undergo decarboxylation, depiperylyzation, dealkylation and defluorination as a result of laccase-mediated bond breakage. Anti-microbial activity of the biodegraded products was monitored by residual anti-bacterial toxicity test (E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus). The biodegraded products were found to be non-toxic and resulted in the growth of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as determined by the agar-diffusion method. Moreover, the storage stability of laccase was determined for 28-day duration at varying pH (3-10) and temperature (4-50 °C). The maximum storage stability was obtained at pH 4.5 and temperature 30 °C. Therefore, utilizing SMW for the degradation of OMPs from wastewater not only benefits in degradation but also reuses SMW agro waste, shedding light on agro waste management. Thus, SMW is a one-pot solution for both OMPs biodegradation and circularity in the economy.

Ciprofloxacin and Azithromycin Antibiotics Interactions with Bilayer Ionic Surfactants: A Molecular Dynamics Study

The introduction of pharmaceuticals into aquatic ecosystems can lead to the generation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This paper employed molecular dynamics simulations to examine the interactions between cationic/anionic surfactants and two antibiotics or drugs, namely, ciprofloxacin and azithromycin. The analysis focused on many factors to elucidate the mechanism by which the surfactant bilayer molecular structure affects the selected antibiotics. These factors include the tilt angle, rotational angle of the surfactants, electrostatic potential, and charge density along the bilayers. Our molecular-level investigation of the adsorption mechanisms of hydrophobic (azithromycin) and hydrophilic (ciprofloxacin) drugs on the cationic/anionic surfactant bilayer offers a crucial understanding for comprehending the optimal selection of surfactants for effectively separating antibiotics.

Degradation of Emerging Pharmaceutical Pollutants from Wastewater Using Penicillium aurantiogriseum 2AJS

Approximately 3000 pharmaceutical compounds and personal care products (PPCPs) are utilized and discharged into the wastewater at low levels, and they are rarely removed or treated in wastewater treatment facilities. The present study focused on the potential ability of Penicillium aurantiogriseum 2AJS to degrade pharmaceutical and personal care products of different classes of drugs: antipyretic and analgesic drugs (paracetamol, diclofenac, and ibuprofen) and hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone). Various ligninolytic extracellular enzymatic studies were also studied. A phytotoxicity assay was performed using the Lemna minor species procured from the Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. The results revealed degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products to 95.27% (paracetamol), 94.37% (diclofenac), 89.29% (ibuprofen), 94.16% (progesterone), 91.10% (estrogen), and 82.12% (testosterone). GC-MS and NMR analyses aided in proposing the degradation pathway of all six pharmaceutical compounds. Degradation kinetics showed a first-order model for all the degradation studies with R2 values ranging between 0.89 and 0.95. A toxicological assay using Lemna minor showed very less toxicity of degraded compounds with a toxicity index ranging between 1.2 and 1.5 compared to the parent compounds. Hence, strain 2AJS can be used in in situ bioremediation of wastewater treatment processes.

Occurrence, fate, and ecological risk of antibiotics in wastewater treatment plants in China: A review

This review offers a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, fate, and ecological risk associated with six major categories of antibiotics found in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. Further exploration includes examining the correlation between antibiotic residual rates in the effluents and process parameters of urban WWTPs across the country. Lastly, a nationwide and urban cluster-specific evaluation of the ecological risk posed by antibiotics in WWTPs is conducted. The findings reveal that the average concentrations of antibiotics in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban WWTPs in China are 786.2 ng/L, 311.2 ng/L, and 186.8 μg/kg, respectively. Among the detected antibiotics, 42% exhibit moderate to high ecological risk in the effluent, with ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, azithromycin, and tetracycline posing moderate to high ecological risks in sludge. The current biological treatment processes in WWTPs demonstrate inefficacy in removing antibiotics. Hence, there is a pressing need to develop and integrate innovative technologies, such as advanced oxidation processes. This review aims to offer a more comprehensive understanding and identify priority antibiotics for control to effectively manage antibiotic pollution within WWTPs at both national and regional levels.

A novel photo-enzyme platform based on non-metallic modified carbon nitride for removal of bisphenol A in water

A nonmetallic composite photocatalyst with 2D/2D structure was prepared by hydrothermal in-situ polymerization and used for the immobilization of cytochrome C (Cyt c). The photo-enzyme coupling system has a very high enzyme load, which can reach 528.29 mg g-1 after optimization. Compared with free Cyt c, Cytc/PEDOT/CN showed better enzymatic activity, stability and catalytic efficiency. Even after being stored at 100 °C for 60 min, the enzyme activity remained at 49.42 % and remained at 57.89 % after 8 cycles. Moreover, Cytc0.5/PEDOT3/CN showed excellent photocatalytic degradation performance in the degradation experiment of bisphenol A (BPA), reaching 68.22 % degradation rate within 60 min, which was 3.9 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4 and 1.61 times higher than that of pure PEDOT3/CN. This study shows that the introduction of conductive polymers is of great significance to the photo-enzyme coupling system and provides a new strategy for the treatment of phenol-containing wastewater.

Spatiotemporal distribution of ecological risk of antibiotics in seven major river basins of China: An optimized multilevel assessment approach

Antibiotics have been recognized as emerging pollutants due to their ecological and human health risks. This paper aims to enhance the ecological risk assessment (ERA) framework for antibiotics, to illustrate the distribution of these risks across different locations and seasons, and to identify the antibiotics that pose high ecological risk. This paper focuses on 52 antibiotics in seven major basins of China. Relying on the optimized approach of ERA and antibiotic monitoring data published from 2017 to 2021, the results of ERA are presented in multilevel. Across the study area, there are marked variations in the spatial distribution of antibiotics' ecological risks. The Huaihe River Basin, the Haihe River Basin, and the Liaohe River Basin are the top three in the ranking of present ecological risks. The research results also reveal significant differences in temporal variation, underscoring the need for increased attention during certain seasons. Ten antibiotics with high contribution rates to ecological risk are identified, which is an important reference to formulate an antibiotic control list. The multilevel results provided both risk values and their ubiquities across a broad study region, which is a powerful support for developing ecological risk management of antibiotics.

Side effects of the addition of an adsorbent for the nitrification performance of a microbiome in the treatment of an antibiotic mixture

This work determined the effect of biochar (BC) as an adsorbent on the nitrifying microbiome in regulating the removal, transformation, fate, toxicity, and potential environmental consequences of an antibiotic mixture containing oxytetracycline (OTC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Despite the beneficial role of BC as reported in the literature, the present study revealed side effects for the nitrifying microbiome and its functioning arising from the presence of BC. Long-term monitoring revealed severe disruption to nitratation via the inhibition of both nitrite oxidizers (e.g., Nitrospira defluvii) and potential comammox species (e.g., Ca. Nitrospira nitrificans). Byproducts (BPs) more toxic than the parent compounds were found to persist at a high relative abundance, particularly in the presence of BC. Quantitative structure-activity relationship modeling determined that the physicochemical properties of the toxic BPs significantly differed from those of OTC and SMX. The results suggested that the BPs tended to mobilize and accumulate on the surface of the solids in the system (i.e., the BC and biofilm), disrupting the nitrifiers growing at the interface. Collectively, this study provides novel insights, demonstrating that the addition of adsorbents to biological systems may not necessarily be beneficial; rather, they may generate side effects for specific bacteria that have important ecosystem functions.

Strategies to attenuate ciprofloxacin inhibition on enhanced biological phosphorus removal from wastewater and its recoverability

The inhibiting effects of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) were investigated with no change in reactor operation and with increased aeration rate and sludge retention time (SRT) to explore inhibition-alleviating solutions. Additionally, performance recoverability was evaluated. The results showed that the phosphorus removal efficiency in the presence of 0.002-0.092 mg/L CIP for 7 days was only 12.5%. Increasing the aeration rate relieved inhibition (33.5% phosphorus removal efficiency on Day 7), and increasing SRT slowed EBPR performance deterioration. The EBPR performance recovered from CIP inhibition and increases in the aeration rate and SRT resulted in different recovery phenomena. The maximum PO43--P release rate continued to decrease in the first 2 days of the recovery stage and then gradually increased. However, the maximum PO43--P uptake rate immediately increased at different rates among reactors, which might be attributed to variations in the microbial community structure, decreased poly-P content, and enhanced abundances of ABC transporters and quorum sensing. It was found that some microorganisms associated with phosphorus removal were more tolerant to CIP than glycogen accumulating organisms. Moreover, the increased relative abundance of the qepA gene indicated that the microorganisms in the EBPR system had strong antibiotic resistance capacity. The bacterial community structure was significantly affected by CIP and could not recover to the initial structure. The results help to provide technical support for the operation of the EBPR process in the presence of CIP and to increase the understanding of system recoverability.

New insights into antibiotic stimulation of methane production during anaerobic digestion

Residual antibiotics in swine wastewater pose a critical challenge for stable anaerobic digestion (AD). This study offers fresh insights into the anaerobic treatment of swine wastewater. The results showed that the presence of three typical antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole (SMX), oxytetracycline (OTC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP)) in swine wastewater could promote methane production by stimulating the production and conversion of ethanol. Among them, SMX exhibited the strongest methane promotion effect, with the cumulative methane production increasing from 138.47 to 2204.19 mL/g VS. According to the microbial community structure, antibiotics could promote the growth of Corynebacterium, Lutispora and hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanosassiliicoccus, Methanobrevibacter, and Methanobacterium), but inhibit the enrichment of acetoclastic methanogen (Methanosaeta). The relative abundance of Methanosaeta decreased from 2.93-19.80% to 0.52-2.58% under antibiotic stress. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the influence of different antibiotic types on methanogenic pathways. Specifically, OTC and CIP promoted the acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic pathways, respectively, to enhance methane production. However, SMX could promote both acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic pathways.

Promising bioprocesses for the efficient removal of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistance genes from urban and hospital wastewaters: Potentialities of aerobic granular systems

The use, overuse, and improper use of antibiotics have resulted in higher levels of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs), which have profoundly disturbed the equilibrium of the environment. Furthermore, once antibiotic agents are excreted in urine and feces, these substances often can reach wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), in which improper treatments have been highlighted as the main reason for stronger dissemination of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs to the receiving bodies. Hence, achieving better antibiotic removal capacities in WWTPs is proposed as an adequate approach to limit the spread of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs into the environment. In this review, we highlight hospital wastewater (WW) as a critical hotspot for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance due to its high level of antibiotics and pathogens. Hence, monitoring the composition and structure of the bacterial communities related to hospital WW is a key factor in controlling the spread of ARGs. In addition, we discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the current biological WW treatments regarding the antibiotic-resistance phenomenon. Widely used conventional activated sludge technology has proved to be ineffective in mitigating the dissemination of ARB and ARGs to the environment. However, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology is a promising technology-with broad adaptability and excellent performance-that could successfully reduce antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs in the generated effluents. We also outline the main operational parameters involved in mitigating antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs in WWTPs. In this regard, WW operation under long hydraulic and solid retention times allows better removal of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs independently of the WW technology employed. Finally, we address the current knowledge of the adsorption and degradation of antibiotics and their importance in removing ARB and ARGs. Notably, AGS can enhance the removal of antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs due to the complex microbial metabolism within the granular biomass.

Phytohormone gibberellins treatment enhances multiple antibiotics removal efficiency of different bacteria-microalgae-fungi symbionts

To develop and characterize novel antibiotics removal biomaterial technology, we constructed three different bacteria-microalgae-fungi consortiums containing Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), endophytic bacterium, Clonostachys rosea (C. rosea), Ganoderma lucidum, and Pleurotus pulmonarius. The results showed that under treatment with 50 mg/L of gibberellins (GAs), the three bacteria-microalgae-fungi symbionts had maximal growth rates (0.317 ± 0.030 d-1) and the highest removal efficiency for seven different antibiotics. Among them, C. vulgaris-endophytic bacterium-C. rosea symbiont had the best performance, with antibiotics removal efficiencies of 96.0 ± 1.4 %, 91.1 ± 7.9 %, 48.7 ± 5.1 %, 34.6 ± 2.9 %, 61.0 ± 5.5 %, 63.7 ± 5.6 %, and 54.3 ± 4.9 % for tetracycline hydrochloride, oxytetracycline hydrochloride, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, and sulfamethoxazole, respectively. Overall, the present study demonstrates that 50 mg/L GAs enhances biomass production and antibiotics removal efficiency of bacteria-microalgae-fungi symbionts, providing a framework for future antibiotics-containing wastewater treatment using three-phase symbionts.

Degradation of Ampicillin with antibiotic activity removal using persulfate and submersible UVC LED: Kinetics, mechanism, electrical energy and cost analysis

Effective water treatment to remove antibiotics and its activity from contaminated water is urgently needed to prevent antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) emergence. In this study, we investigated degradation of Ampicillin (AMP), an extensively used β-lactam antibiotic, using submersible Ultraviolet C Light Emitting Diode (λmax = 276 nm) irradiation source, and Persulfate (UVC LED/PS system). Pseudo first order rate constant (kobs) for degradation of AMP (1 ppm) by UVC LED/PS system was determined to be 0.5133 min-1 (PS = 0.2 mM). kobs value at pH 2.5 (0.7259 min-1) was found to be higher than pH 6.5 (0.5133 min-1) and pH 12 (0.1745 min-1). kobs value for degradation of AMP in deionized water spiked with inorganic anions (Cl-=0.5369 min-1,SO42-=0.4545 min-1, NO3-=0.1526 min-1, HCO3-=0.0226 min-1), in real tap water (0.1182 min-1) and simulated ground water (0.0372 min-1) were presented. Radical scavenging experiment reveal involvement of sulfate radical anion and hydroxyl radical in UVC LED/PS system. EPR analysis confirms the generation of sulfate radical anion and hydroxyl radical. Importantly, 74% reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) occurred within 60 min of AMP treatment by UVC LED/PS system. Seven degradation by-products were identified by high resolution mass spectrometry, and degradation pathways were proposed. Antibacterial activity of AMP towards Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus was completely removed after UVC LED/PS treatment. ECOSAR model predicted no very toxic degradation by-products generation by UVC LED/PS system. Electrical Energy per order (EEo) and cost of UVC LED/PS system were determined to be 0.9351 kW/m3/order and ₹ 7.91/m3 ($ 0.095/m3 or € 0.087/m3), respectively. Overall, this study highlights, UVC LED/PS system as energy efficient, low-cost, and its potential to emerge as sulfate radical anion based advanced oxidation process (AOP) to treat water with antibiotics.

Genome sequencing of Porostereum spadiceum to study the degradation of levofloxacin

Despite various plans to rationalize antibiotic use, antibiotic resistance in environmental bacteria is increasing due to the accumulation of antibiotic residues in the environment. This study aimed to test the ability of basidiomycete fungal strains to biotransform the antibiotic levofloxacin, a widely-used third-generation broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone, and to propose enzyme targets potentially involved in this biotransformation. The biotransformation process was performed using fungal strains. Levofloxacin biotransformation reached 100% after 9 days of culture with Porostereum spadiceum BS34. Using genomics and proteomics analyses coupled with activity tests, we showed that P. spadiceum produces several heme-peroxidases together with H2O2-producing enzymes that could be involved in the antibiotic biotransformation process. Using UV and high-resolution mass spectrometry, we were able to detect five levofloxacin degradation products. Their putative identity based on their MS2 fragmentation patterns led to the conclusion that the piperazine moiety was the main target of oxidative modification of levofloxacin by P. spadiceum, leading to a decrease in antibiotic activity.

Method for plasmid-based antibiotic-free fermentation

BACKGROUND

Antibiotic-based plasmid selection and maintenance is a core tool in molecular biology; however, while convenient, this strategy has numerous drawbacks for biological manufacturing. Overuse of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance, which is a growing threat to modern medicine. Antibiotics themselves are costly and therefore often omitted in fermentations, leading to plasmid loss and a corresponding loss in product yield. Furthermore, constitutive expression of a plasmid-encoded antibiotic resistance gene imposes a significant metabolic burden on the cells. For many fermentation products (e.g., in nutrition and medicine), the use of antibiotic resistance genes is subject to strict regulations and should be avoided. We present a method for plasmid selection and maintenance with stringent selection pressure that is independent of antibiotics and ARG. Furthermore, it can be used without any restrictions regarding culture medium and temperature.

RESULTS

The developed method involves modification of a bacterial strain such that an essential gene is expressed genomically under the control of an inducible promoter. A copy of the same essential gene with the endogenous promoter is supplied on a plasmid for selection. In the absence of the inducer for the genomic copy of the essential gene, cells rely on expression of the plasmid-encoded gene copy, leading to tight selection for plasmid maintenance. Induction of the genomic copy of the essential gene enables the engineered strain to be propagated in the absence of a plasmid. Here, we describe the genetic setup and demonstrate long-term, tight selection for plasmid maintenance with a variety of different plasmids and E. coli strains.

CONCLUSIONS

This method facilitates plasmid-based fermentations by eliminating the need for antibiotic selection and improving plasmid maintenance.

A bibliometric analysis of emerging contaminants (ECs) (2001-2021): Evolution of hotspots and research trends

Emerging contaminants (ECs) have attracted increasing attention in the past two decades because of their ubiquitous existence and high environmental risk. Understanding the progress of research and the evolution of hot topics is critical. This study provides a bibliometric review, along with a quantitative trend analysis of approximately 8000 publication records dated from 2001 to 2021. Wider distribution in various subjects was discovered in terms of publication numbers, indicating a strong tendency for EC research to become an interdisciplinary topic. Visualization of term co-occurrence analysis revealed that the ECs study went through three stages over time: identification and detection, traceability and risk, and process and control. Quantitative trend analysis revealed that antibiotics, microplastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, heavy metals, and nanoparticles are attracting increasing attention, whereas conventional pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants, and materials such as benzotriazole, diclofenac, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, triclosan, and titanium dioxide exhibit a downward trend. PFAS and EDCs are considered potential future core hotspots for the hysteretic rise in research attention compared with conventional ECs. Furthermore, analysis of research linkage and the developing stages of ECs could be possible approach to determine the evolution of hotspots in ECs study. This study provides objective and comprehensive insights into the research landscape of ECs, which may shed light on future developmental directions for researchers interested in this field.

Ultrafast and simultaneous removal of four tetracyclines from aqueous solutions using waste material-derived graphene oxide-supported cobalt-iron magnetic nanocomposites

In this work, a graphene oxide-supported cobalt-iron oxide (GO/Co-Fe) magnetic nanocomposite was successfully synthesized using waste dry cells for the efficient and simultaneous removal of tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DTC) from aqueous solutions. The GO/Co-Fe nanocomposite was thoroughly characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. This multi-faceted characterization provided clean insights into the composition and properties of the synthesized nanocomposite. The adsorption of tetracyclines (TCs) was systematically investigated by assessing the influence of critical factors, such as adsorbent dosage, contact duration, initial pH of the solution, initial concentration, and temperature. The GO/Co-Fe adsorbent showed high removal efficiencies of 94.1% TC, 94.32% CTC, 94.22% OTC, and 96.94% DTC within 30 s contact period. The maximum removal efficiency of TCs was found at a low adsorbent dose of 0.15 g L-1. Notably, this superior removal efficiency was achieved at neutral pH and room temperature, demonstrating the adsorbent's efficacy under environmentally viable conditions. The kinetic studies demonstrated that the adsorption process was fitted satisfactorily with the pseudo-second-order model. Additionally, the adsorption behaviour of TCs on the GO/Co-Fe adsorbent was assessed by isotherm models, Langmuir and Freundlich. The experimental data followed the Langmuir isotherm, signifying a monolayer adsorption mechanism on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorption capacities (qm) of GO/Co-Fe for TC, CTC, OTC and DTC were determined to be 64.10, 71.43, 72.46 and 99.01 mg g-1, respectively. Importantly, the GO/Co-Fe adsorbent showed reusability capabilities. The super magnetic properties of GO/Co-Fe made it easy to use for several cycles. These results clearly establish GO/Co-Fe as an exceptionally effective adsorbent for the removal of TCs from aqueous systems, highlighting its great potentiality in water treatment applications.

Preparation of three-dimensional ordered macroporous Ag/LaFeO3 and heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of penicillin G potassium

3DOMLaFeO3 was prepared by template method combined with sol-gel method using monodisperse polystyrene (PS) microspheres as template, and Ag/3DOMLaFeO3 perovskite catalyst was prepared by impregnation method combined with sodium borohydride reduction method. The catalysts were characterised by means of TG, XRD, SEM, BET, XPS, UV-vis DRS, etc. The photo-Fenton catalytic performance, stability and catalytic reaction mechanism of Ag/3DOMLaFeO3 were studied with penicillin G potassium (PEN G) as the model pollutant. The results indicated that the as-prepared Ag/3DOMLaFeO3 exhibited a three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) structure, and the light capture and mass transfer were enhanced through abundant pores and large specific surface area. Based on the surface plasmon resonance effect (SPR), Ag loading enhanced the absorption of the material in the visible light region, and inhibited the recombination of photogenerated carriers, which improved the photocatalytic performance of 3DOMLaFeO3 under visible light. Under the conditions of hydrogen peroxide dosage of 1.5 mL·L-1, initial pH of 5, PEN G initial concentration of 100 mg·L-1, catalyst dosage of 300 mg·L-1, xenon lamp irradiation, the degration ratio of PEN G and the removal rate of TOC reached 99.99% and 85.45% within 120 min, respectively. In addition, it had a wide range of pH application, excellent stability and practical application value. The quenching experiment and ESR test showed that ·OH and ·O2- were the reasons for high catalytic degradation. The least square method was used to fit the experimental data, and the results displayed that the degradation of PEN G was approximately in line with the first-order kinetic reaction.

Removal of intI1, ARGs, and SARS-CoV-2 and changes in bacterial communities in four sewage treatment facilities

Currently, discharge regulations for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are based on conventional parameters, but more is needed to ensure safe water reuse. In particular, emerging pollutants, as antimicrobials and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), are not considered. This research focuses on the fate of emerging biological contaminants during wastewater treatment in Mexico City. intI1 and the ARGs cphA-02, OXA-10 and sul1 were analyzed by qPCR; pathogenic bacteria species were characterized by high throughput sequencing of complete 16S rRNA gene, and fragments of SARS-CoV-2 were quantified by RT-qPCR. Conventional parameters (chemical oxygen demand and coliform bacteria) were also determined. Two sampling campaigns (rainy and dry seasons) were carried out in four municipal WWTPs in Mexico City, representing five biological treatment processes: conventional activated sludge, extended aeration activated sludge, membrane bioreactor, direct anaerobic digestion, and constructed wetland, followed by ultraviolet light or chlorine disinfection. In most cases, gene fragments of SARS-CoV-2 were eliminated below the detection limit of RT-qPCR. The abundance of intI1 positively correlated with the sul1, OXA-10, and cphA-02 abundances; intI1 and the ARGs here studied were partially removed in the WWTPs, and in most cases, the number of copies per second discarded in the sludge were higher those in the effluent. The treatment processes decreased the abundance of dominant bacterial groups in the raw wastewater, while enriching bacterial groups in the effluent and the biological sludge, with possible pollutant removal capabilities. Bacterial communities in the raw wastewater showed the predominance of the genus Arcobacter (from 62.4 to 86.0 %) containing potentially pathogenic species. Additionally, DNA of some species persisted after the treatment processes: A. johnsonii, A. junii, A. caviae, A. hydrophila, A. veronii, A. butzleri, A. cryaerophilus, Chryseobacterium indologenes, Hafnia paralvei, M. osloensis, Pseudomonas putida and Vibrio cholerae, which deserves special attention in future regulation for safe water reuse.

Recent advances of modification effect in Co3O4-based catalyst towards highly efficient photocatalysis

Tricobalt tetroxide (Co3O4) has been developed as a promising photocatalyst material for various applications. Several reports have been published on the self-modification of Co3O4 to achieve optimal photocatalytic performance. The pristine Co3O4 alone is inadequate for photocatalysis due to the rapid recombination process of photogenerated (PG) charge carriers. The modification of Co3O4 can be extended through the introduction of doping elements, incorporation of supporting materials, surface functionalization, metal loading, and combination with other photocatalysts. The addition of doping elements and support materials may enhance the photocatalysis process, although these modifications have a slight effect on decreasing the recombination process of PG charge carriers. On the other hand, combining Co3O4 with other semiconductors results in a different PG charge carrier mechanism, leading to a decrease in the recombination process and an increase in photocatalytic activity. Therefore, this work discusses recent modifications of Co3O4 and their effects on its photocatalytic performance. Additionally, the modification effects, such as enhanced surface area, generation of oxygen vacancies, tuning the band gap, and formation of heterojunctions, are reviewed to demonstrate the feasibility of separating PG charge carriers. Finally, the formation and mechanism of these modification effects are also reviewed based on theoretical and experimental approaches to validate their formation and the transfer process of charge carriers.

Biomethane is produced by acetate cleavage, not direct interspecies electron transfer: genome-centric view and carbon isotope

Understanding the source of methane (CH4) is of great significance for improving the anaerobic fermentation efficiency in bioengineering, and for mitigating the emission potential of natural ecosystems. Microbes involved in the process named direct interspecies electron transfer coupling with CO2 reduction, i.e., electrons released from electroactive bacteria to reduce CO2 into CH4, have attracted considerable attention for wastewater treatment in the past decade. However, how the synergistic effect of microbiota contributes to this anaerobic carbon metabolism accompanied by CH4 production still remains poorly understood, especial for wastewater with antibiotic exposure. Results show that enhancing lower-abundant acetoclastic methanogens and acetogenic bacteria, rather than electroactive bacteria, contributed to CH4 production, based on a metagenome-assembled genomes network analysis. Natural and artificial isotope tracing of CH4 further confirmed that CH4 mainly originated from acetoclastic methanogenesis. These findings reveal the contribution of direct acetate cleavage (acetoclastic methanogenesis) and provide insightsfor further regulation of methanogenic strategies.

Mechanism of antibiotic resistance development in an activated sludge system under tetracycline pressure

The mechanism of antibiotic resistance (AR) development in an activated sludge system under tetracycline (TC) pressure was discussed and analyzed. According to the variation of macro-factors, including TC, COD, TN, TP, NH3-N, pH, heavy metals, and reactor settings, the tet genes respond accordingly. Consequently, the enrichment sites of tet genes form an invisible AR selection zone, where AR microorganisms thrive, gather, reproduce, and spread. The efflux pump genes tetA and tetB prefer anaerobic environment, while ribosome protective protein genes tetM, tetO, tetQ, tetT, and tetW were more concentrated in aerobic situations. As a corresponding micro-effect, different types of tet genes selected the corresponding dominant bacteria such as Thauera and Arthrobacter, suggesting the intrinsic relationship between tet genes and potential hosts. In summary, the macro-response and micro-effect of tet genes constitute an interactive mechanism with tet genes as the core, which is the crucial cause for the continuous development of AR. This study provides an executable strategy to control the development of AR in actual wastewater treatment plants from the perspective of macro-factors and micro-effects.

Evaluating the Combined Effects of Erythromycin and Levofloxacin on the Growth of Navicula sp. and Understanding the Underlying Mechanisms

Navicula sp., a type of benthic diatom, plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle as a widely distributed algae in water bodies, making it an essential primary producer in the context of global carbon neutrality. However, using erythromycin (ERY) and levofloxacin (LEV) in medicine, livestock, and aquaculture has introduced a new class of pollutants known as antibiotic pollutants, which pose potential threats to human and animal health. This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of ERY and LEV, individually or in combination, on the growth, antioxidant system, chlorophyll synthesis, and various cell osmotic pressure indexes (such as soluble protein, proline, and betaine) of Navicula sp. The results indicated that ERY (1 mg/L), LEV (320 mg/L), and their combined effects could inhibit the growth of Navicula sp. Interestingly, the combination of these two drugs exhibited a time-dependent effect on the chlorophyll synthesis of Navicula sp., with ERY inhibiting the process while LEV promoted it. Furthermore, after 96 h of exposure to the drugs, the activities of GSH-Px, POD, CAT, and the contents of MDA, proline, and betaine increased. Conversely, the actions of GST and the contents of GSH and soluble protein decreased in the ERY group. In the LEV group, the activities of POD and CAT and the contents of GSH, MDA, proline, and betaine increased, while the contents of soluble protein decreased. Conversely, the mixed group exhibited increased POD activity and contents of GSH, MDA, proline, betaine, and soluble protein. These findings suggest that antibiotics found in pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) can harm primary marine benthic eukaryotes. The findings from the research on the possible hazards linked to antibiotic medications in aquatic ecosystems offer valuable knowledge for ensuring the safe application of these drugs in environmental contexts.

Microalgae systems - environmental agents for wastewater treatment and further potential biomass valorisation

Water is the most valuable resource on the planet. However, massive anthropogenic activities generate threatening levels of biological, organic, and inorganic pollutants that are not efficiently removed in conventional wastewater treatment systems. High levels of conventional pollutants (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus), emerging chemical contaminants such as antibiotics, and pathogens (namely antibiotic-resistant ones and related genes) jeopardize ecosystems and human health. Conventional wastewater treatment systems entail several environmental issues: (i) high energy consumption; (ii) high CO₂ emissions; and (iii) the use of chemicals or the generation of harmful by-products. Hence, the use of microalgal systems (entailing one or several microalgae species, and in consortium with bacteria) as environmental agents towards wastewater treatment has been seen as an environmentally friendly solution to remove conventional pollutants, antibiotics, coliforms and antibiotic resistance genes. In recent years, several authors have evaluated the use of microalgal systems for the treatment of different types of wastewater, such as agricultural, municipal, and industrial. Generally, microalgal systems can provide high removal efficiencies of: (i) conventional pollutants, up to 99%, 99%, and 90% of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and/or organic carbon, respectively, through uptake mechanisms, and (ii) antibiotics frequently found in wastewaters, such as sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim and azithromycin at 86%, 65%, 42% and 93%, respectively, through the most desirable microalgal mechanism, biodegradation. Although pathogens removal by microalgal species is complex and very strain-specific, it is also possible to attain total coliform and Escherichia coli removal of 99.4% and 98.6%, respectively. However, microalgal systems' effectiveness strongly relies on biotic and abiotic conditions, thus the selection of operational conditions is critical. While the combination of selected species (microalgae and bacteria), ratios and inoculum concentration allow the efficient removal of conventional pollutants and generation of high amounts of biomass (that can be further converted into valuable products such as biofuels and biofertilisers), abiotic factors such as pH, hydraulic retention time, light intensity and CO₂/O₂ supply also have a crucial role in conventional pollutants and antibiotics removal, and wastewater disinfection. However, some rationale must be considered according to the purpose. While alkaline pH induces the hydrolysis of some antibiotics and the removal of faecal coliforms, it also decreases phosphates solubility and induces the formation of ammonium from ammonia. Also, while CO₂ supply increases the removal of E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as the microalgal growth (and thus the conventional pollutants uptake), it decreases Enterococcus faecalis removal. Therefore, this review aims to provide a critical review of recent studies towards the application of microalgal systems for the efficient removal of conventional pollutants, antibiotics, and pathogens; discussing the feasibility, highlighting the advantages and challenges of the implementation of such process, and presenting current case-studies of different applications of microalgal systems.

Preparation and characterization of activated carbons from Lemon Pulp for oxytetracycline removal

This study aims to remove oxytetracycline (OTC) that harms the ecosystem, with activated carbon (LPAC) obtained from Lemon Pulp (LP). Characterization and properties of LPAC were analyzed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and point of zero charge (pH_PZC) analyses. BET surface area, pore volume and pH_PZC of LPAC produced by carbonization at 400 °C and activation with KOH at 800 °C were obtained as 1333.01 m²/g, 0.391 cm³/g, and 6.81, respectively. pH, reaction time, initial OTC concentration, and adsorbent amounts were optimized in the adsorption study performed with LPAC with high porosity and micropores. Kinetic evaluation was made with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models and Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin equations are used to investigate their isotherms under reaction equilibrium conditions, and also the results were analyzed by statistical method (ANOVA). In pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models, where the best results were obtained, R² values were calculated as 0.999 and 0.995, respectively. Maximum OTC removal efficiency was found as 104.22 mg/g. Overall, this research indicates that LPAC for the treatment of water contaminated with antibiotics is environmentally friendly green material.

Metal-organic framework-based nanomaterials as opto-electrochemical sensors for the detection of antibiotics and hormones: A review

Increasing trace levels of antibiotics and hormones in the environment and food samples are concerning and pose a threat. Opto-electrochemical sensors have received attention due to their low cost, portability, sensitivity, analytical performance, and ease of deployment in the field as compared to conventional expensive technologies that are time-consuming and require experienced professionals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with variable porosity, active functional sites, and fluorescence capacity are attractive materials for developing opto-electrochemical sensors. Herein, the insights into the capabilities of electrochemical and luminescent MOF sensors for detection and monitoring of antibiotics and hormones from various samples are critically reviewed. The detailed sensing mechanisms and detection limits of MOF sensors are addressed. The challenges, recent advances, and future directions for the development of stable, high-performance MOFs as commercially viable next-generation opto-electrochemical sensor materials for the detection and monitoring of diverse analytes are discussed.

Occurrence and fate of antibiotics in swine waste treatment: An industrial case

This study mapped the fate of antibiotics in a swine farm with integrated waste treatment including anoxic stabilization, fixed-film anaerobic digestion, anoxic-oxic (A/O), and composting. Results show the prevalent and consistent occurrence of 12 antibiotics in swine waste. Mass balance of these antibiotics was calculated to track their flow and evaluate their removal by different treatment units. The integrated treatment train could effectively reduce antibiotic loading to the environment by 90% (measured as combined mass of all antibiotic residues). Within the treatment train, anoxic stabilization as the initial treatment step, accounted for the highest contribution (43%) to overall antibiotic elimination. Results also show that aerobic was more effective than anaerobic regarding antibiotic degradation. Composting accounted for an additional of 31% removal of antibiotics while anaerobic digestion contributed to 15%. After treatment, antibiotic residues in the treated effluent and composted materials were 2 and 8% of the initial antibiotic loading in raw swine waste, respectively. Ecological risk assessment showed negligible or low risk quotient associated with most individual antibiotics released into the aquatic environment or soil from swine farming. Nevertheless, antibiotic residues in treated water and composted materials together showed significant ecological risk to water and soil organisms. Thus, further work to improve treatment performance or develop new technologies is necessary to reduce the impact of antibiotics from swine farming.

Sub-inhibitory gentamicin pollution induces gentamicin resistance gene integration in class 1 integrons in the environment

Antibiotics at sub-inhibitory concentrations are often found in the environment. Here they could impose selective pressure on bacteria, leading to the selection and dissemination of antibiotic resistance, despite being under the inhibitory threshold. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of sub-inhibitory concentrations of gentamicin on environmental class 1 integron cassettes in natural river microbial communities. Gentamicin at sub-inhibitory concentrations promoted the integration and selection of gentamicin resistance genes (GmRG) in class 1 integrons after only a one-day exposure. Therefore, sub-inhibitory concentrations of gentamicin induced integron rearrangements, increasing the mobilization potential of gentamicin resistance genes and potentially increasing their dissemination in the environment. This study demonstrates the effects of antibiotics at sub-inhibitory concentrations in the environment and supports concerns about antibiotics as emerging pollutants.

Effect of antibiotic cocktail exposure on functional disturbance of nitrifying microbiome

The present study quantitatively determined the degree and type of functional disturbance in the nitrifying microbiome caused by exposure to a single oxytetracycline (OTC) and a two-antibiotic mixture containing OTC and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). While the single antibiotic had a pulsed disturbance on nitritation that was recoverable within three weeks, the antibiotic mixture caused a more significant pulsed disturbance on nitritation and a potential press disturbance on nitratation that was not recoverable for over five months. Bioinformatic analysis revealed significant perturbations for both canonical nitrite-oxidizing (Nitrospira defluvii) and potential complete ammonium-oxidizing (Ca. Nitrospira nitrificans) populations that were strongly associated with the press perturbation on nitratation. In addition to this functional disturbance, the antibiotic mixture reduced the biosorption of OTC and altered its biotransformation pathways, resulting in different transformation products compared with those produced when OTC was treated as a single antibiotic. Collectively, this work elucidated how the antibiotic mixture can affect the degree, type, and duration of the functional disturbance on nitrifying microbiome and offer new insights into the environmental consequences of antibiotic residues (e.g., their fate, transformation, and ecotoxicity) when present as an antibiotic mixture rather than single antibiotics.

Spatial Distribution and Risk Assessment of Antibiotics in 15 Pharmaceutical Plants in the Pearl River Delta

Pharmaceutical plants are an essential source of antibiotics emitted into the aqueous environment. The monitoring of target antibiotics in pharmaceutical plants through various regions is vital to optimize contaminant release. The occurrence, distribution, removal, and ecological risk of 30 kinds of selected antibiotics in 15 pharmaceutical plants in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were investigated in this study. Lincomycin (LIN) showed the highest concentration (up to 56,258.3 ng/L) in the pharmaceutical plant influents from Zhongshan city. Norfloxacin (NFX) showed a higher detection frequency than other antibiotics. In addition, the spatial distribution of antibiotics in pharmaceutical plants showed significant differences, with higher concentrations of total antibiotics found in pharmaceutical plant influents in Shenzhen City than those of different regions in PRD. The treatment processes adopted by pharmaceutical plants were commonly ineffective in removing antibiotics, with only 26.7% of antibiotics being effectively removed (average removal greater than 70%), while 55.6% of antibiotics had removal rates of below 60%. The anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (AAO)-membrane bioreactor (MBR) combined process exhibited better treatment performance than the single treatment process. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ofloxacin (OFL), erythromycin-H₂O (ETM-H₂O), sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethazine (SMZ), norfloxacin (NFX), and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in pharmaceutical plant effluents posed high or moderate ecological risk and deserve particular attention.

Novel magnetic graphoxide/biochar composite derived from tea for multiple SAs and QNs antibiotics removal in water

Antibiotics pollution is an urgent public health issue. Biochar is a kind of promising composite for removal antibiotic in aqueous environment. In this study, a novel magnetic graphoxide/biochar composite (mGO/TBC) was synthesized by simple impregnation method and used as an efficient and recyclable persulfate (PS) activator for degradation and removal of sulfonamides (SAs) and quinolones (QNs) antibiotics. Based on the synergism pre-adsorption and degradation between graphoxide and biochar, the removal rates of mGO/TBC on sarafloxacin hydrochloride, sulfadimethoxine, sulfapyridine, sulfadoxine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfachloropyridazine, enrofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin were increased above 95%. Moreover, the mGO/TBC could be reused at least seven times after degradation-recovery cycles. Quenching experiment and ESR analysis proved that ¹O₂, ^•OH, and SO₄^•- from mGO/TBC/PS system were the primary oxidation active species to degrade SAs and QNs. It is a promising substrate for antibiotic bioremediation with good application prospects.

Antimicrobial and the Resistances in the Environment: Ecological and Health Risks, Influencing Factors, and Mitigation Strategies

Antimicrobial contamination and antimicrobial resistance have become global environmental and health problems. A large number of antimicrobials are used in medical and animal husbandry, leading to the continuous release of residual antimicrobials into the environment. It not only causes ecological harm, but also promotes the occurrence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. The role of environmental factors in antimicrobial contamination and the spread of antimicrobial resistance is often overlooked. There are a large number of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes in human beings, which increases the likelihood that pathogenic bacteria acquire resistance, and also adds opportunities for human contact with antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. In this paper, we review the fate of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance in the environment, including the occurrence, spread, and impact on ecological and human health. More importantly, this review emphasizes a number of environmental factors that can exacerbate antimicrobial contamination and the spread of antimicrobial resistance. In the future, the timely removal of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance genes in the environment will be more effective in alleviating antimicrobial contamination and antimicrobial resistance.

Current research trends on emerging contaminants pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs): A comprehensive review

Pharmaceutical and personnel care products (PPCPs) from wastewater are a potential hazard to the human health and wildlife, and their occurrence in wastewater has caught the concern of researchers recently. To deal with PPCPs, various treatment technologies have been evolved such as physical, biological, and chemical methods. Nevertheless, modern and efficient techniques such as advance oxidation processes (AOPs) demand expensive chemicals and energy, which ultimately leads to a high treatment cost. Therefore, integration of chemical techniques with biological processes has been recently suggested to decrease the expenses. Furthermore, combining ozonation with activated carbon (AC) can significantly enhance the removal efficiency. There are some other emerging technologies of lower operational cost like photo-Fenton method and solar radiation-based methods as well as constructed wetland, which are promising. However, feasibility and practicality in pilot-scale have not been estimated for most of these advanced treatment technologies. In this context, the present review work explores the treatment of emerging PPCPs in wastewater, via available conventional, non-conventional, and integrated technologies. Furthermore, this work focused on the state-of-art technologies via an extensive literature search, highlights the limitations and challenges of the prevailing commercial technologies. Finally, this work provides a brief discussion and offers future research directions on technologies needed for treatment of wastewater containing PPCPs, accompanied by techno-economic feasibility assessment.

Applying Dynamic Magnetic Field To Promote Anaerobic Digestion via Enhancing the Electron Transfer of a Microbial Respiration Chain

Electrochemical methods have been reported to strengthen anaerobic digestion, but the continuous electrical power supply and the complicated electrode installed inside the digester have restricted it from practical use. In this study, a dynamic magnetic field (DMF) was placed outside a digester to induce an electromotive force to electrically promote anaerobic digestion. With the applied DMF, an electromotive force of 0.14 mV was generated in the anaerobic sludge, and a 65.02% methane increment was obtained from the anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge. Experiments on each stage of anaerobic digestion showed that acidification and methanogenesis that involve electron transfer of respiration chains were promoted with the DMF, while solubilization and hydrolysis less related to respiration chains were not enhanced. Further analysis indicated that the induced electromotive force polarized the protein-like substances in the sludge to increase the conductivity and capacitance of the sludge. Electrotrophic methanogens (Methanothrix) and exoelectrogens (Exiguobacterium) were enriched with DMF. The kinetic isotope effect test confirmed that electron transfer was accelerated with DMF. Consistently, the concentration ratio of co-enzymes (NADH/NAD⁺ and F₄₂₀H₂/F₄₂₀₎ that reflects the electron exchange with respiration chains significantly increased. Applying the DMF seemed a more accessible strategy to electrically strengthen anaerobic digestion.

Removal performance, biotransformation pathways and products of sulfamethoxazole in vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands with different substrates

For decades, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) has been frequently detected in the aquatic environments due to its high usage and refractory to degradation. Constructed wetland (CW) is regarded as an efficient advanced wastewater technology to eliminate organic pollutants including SMX. In CW system, substrate adsorption and further biodegradation are extremely important in SMX removal; however, the removal performance of SMX by CWs with different substrates varies greatly, and the biotransformation pathways, products, and mechanisms of SMX remain unclear. To address this, we constructed a CW with conventional substrate (CS, gravel) as control (C-CW) and three CWs with emerging substrates (ES, biochar, zeolite and pyrite for B-CW, Z-CW and P-CW, respectively), and explored the performance and mechanisms of SMX removal in CWs. Results illustrated that the removal performance of SMX in CWs with ES reached 94.89-99.35%, and significantly higher than that with CS of 89.50% (p < 0.05). Biodegradation contributed >90% SMX removal in all CWs. The microbial compositions and functions differed among CWs at the middle layer (mixed layer), which shaped diverse resistance pattern and metabolism pathways of microbiomes under SMX stress: P-CW and B-CW cope with SMX stress by enhancing material and energy metabolism, whereas Z-CW does that by enhancing metabolism and exocytosis of xenobiotics. Additionally, nine transformation pathways with 15 transformation products were detected in this study. A reversible process of desamino-SMX being reconverted to SMX might exist in P-CW, which caused a lower SMX removal efficiency in P-CW. This study provided a comprehensive insight into the processes and mechanisms of SMX removal in CWs with different substrates, which would be a useful guidance for substrate selection in CWs in terms of enhanced micropollutants removal.

Extracellular polymeric substances-antibiotics interaction in activated sludge: A review

Antibiotics, the most frequently prescribed drugs, have been widely applied to prevent or cure human and veterinary diseases and have undoubtedly led to massive releases into sewer networks and wastewater treatment systems, a hotspot where the occurrence and transformation of antibiotic resistance take place. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), biopolymers secreted via microbial activity, play an important role in cell adhesion, nutrient retention, and toxicity resistance. However, the potential roles of sludge EPS related to the resistance and removal of antibiotics are still unclear. This work summarizes the composition and physicochemical characteristics of state-of-the-art microbial EPS, highlights the critical role of EPS in antibiotics removal, evaluates their defense performances under different antibiotics exposures, and analyzes the typical factors that could affect the sorption and biotransformation behavior of antibiotics. Next, interactions between microbial EPS and antibiotic resistance genes are analyzed. Future perspectives, especially the engineering application of microbial EPS for antibiotics toxicity detection and defense, are also emphatically stressed.

Effect of Different Lead and Cadmium Salts on the Photolytic Degradation of Two Typical Fluoroquinolones under Natural Sunlight Irradiation

This study investigated the effects of different lead and cadmium salts (Pb(NO₃)₂, Cd(NO₃)₂, PbCl₂, and CdCl₂) on the photolytic degradation of two typical fluoroquinolones (levofloxacin (LVF) and norfloxacin (NOR)) under natural sunlight irradiation. Their half-life time and photolytic kinetic constants (k) were calculated at different molar ratios. The results indicated that the photolytic degradation curves of LVF and NOR followed apparent first-order kinetics. After 42 days of sunlight irradiation, approximately 48.3-69.4% of NOR was decomposed when the initial concentration increased from 0.006 to 0.06 mmol/L. In comparison, only 9.8-43.4% of LVF was decomposed. The k of NOR ranged from 0.79 × 10^-3 to 1.30 × 10^-3 h^-1, and the k of LVF increased from 6.82 × 10^-4 to 1.61 × 10^-4 h^-1. Compared with the control, the Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ participation tended to enhance the LVF and NOR photodegradation. The effects of Cd²⁺ on the photodegradation efficiency were more significant than those of Pb²⁺. It was inferred that the presence of aqueous NO₃^- obviously suppressed the NOR degradation, but Cl^- had slight effects on these two fluoroquinolones' photodegradation. These results are of importance toward the understanding of the persistence of FQs under natural sunlight irradiation in surface waters.

A critical review on retaining antibiotics in liquid digestate: Potential risk and removal technologies

Substantial levels of antibiotics remain in liquid digestate, posing a significant threat to human safety and the environment. A comprehensive assessment of residual antibiotics in liquid digestate and related removal technologies is required. To this end, this review first evaluates the potential risks of the residual antibiotics in liquid digestate by describing various anaerobic digestion processes and their half-lives in the environment. Next, emerging technologies for removing antibiotics in liquid digestate are summarized and discussed, including membrane separation, adsorption, and advanced oxidation processes. Finally, this study comprehensively and critically discusses these emerging technologies' prospects and challenges, including techno-economic feasibility and environmental impacts.

Antibiotics in the Basque coast (N Spain): Occurrence in waste and receiving waters, and risk assessment (2017-2020)

The study of the presence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment is a preliminary step to analyse their possible harmful effects on aquatic ecosystems. In order to monitor their occurrence in the aquatic environment, the European Commission established in 2015, 2018, and 2020 three Watch Lists of substances for Union-wide monitoring (Decisions (EU) 2015/495, 2018/840, and 2020/1161), where some antibiotics within the classes of macrolides, fluoroquinolones and penicillins were included. In the Basque coast, northern Spain, three macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin) and ciprofloxacin were monitored quarterly from 2017 to 2020 (covering a period before and after the COVID19 outbreak), in water samples collected from two Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs), and three control points associated with receiving waters (transitional and coastal water bodies). This work was undertaken for the Basque Water Agency (URA). The three macrolide antibiotics in water showed a frequency of quantification >65 % in the Basque coast, with higher concentrations in the WWTP emission stations than in receiving waters. Their frequency of quantification decreased from 2017 to 2020, as did the consumption of antibiotics in Spanish primary care since 2015. Ciprofloxacin showed higher frequencies of quantification in receiving waters than in wastewaters, but the highest concentrations were observed in the WWTP emission stations. Although consumption of fluoroquinolones (among which is ciprofloxacin) in primary care in the Basque Country has decreased in recent years, this trend was not observed in the waters sampled in the present study. On the other hand, concentrations of clarithromycin, azithromycin, and ciprofloxacin in receiving waters exceeded their respective Predicted No-Effect Concentrations, so they could pose an environmental risk. These substances are widely used in human and animal medicine, so, although only ciprofloxacin is included in the third Watch List, it would be advisable to continue monitoring macrolides in the Basque coast as well.

Chronic effects of benzalkonium chlorides on short chain fatty acids and methane production in semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

As an emerging pollutant, benzalkonium chlorides (BACs) potentially enriched in waste activated sludge (WAS). However, the microbial response mechanism under chronic effects of BACs on acidogenesis and methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion (AD) has not been clearly disclosed. This study investigated the AD (by-)products and microbial evolution under low to high BACs concentrations from bioreactor startup to steady running. It was found that BACs can lead to an increase of WAS hydrolysis and fermentation, but a disturbance to acidogenic bacteria also occurred at low BACs concentration. A noticeable inhibition to methanogenesis occurred when BAC concentration was up to 15 mg/g TSS. Metagenomic analysis revealed the key genes involved in acetic acid (HAc) biosynthesis (i.e. phosphate acetyltransferase, PTA), β-oxidation pathway (acetyl-CoA C-acetyltransferase) and propionic acid (HPr) conversion was slightly promoted compared with control. Furthermore, BACs inhibited the acetotrophic methanogenesis (i.e. acetyl-CoA synthetase), especially BAC concentration was up to 15 mg/g TSS, thereby enhanced short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) accumulation. Overall, chronic stimulation of functional microorganisms with increasing concentrations of BACs impact WAS fermentation.

Removal of Antibiotic Resistance Genes, Class 1 Integrase Gene and Escherichia coli Indicator Gene in a Microalgae-Based Wastewater Treatment System

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems (AWWTS) have recently shown promise in the mitigation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from municipal wastewater (MWW). However, due to the large number of ARGs that exist in MWW, the use of indirect conventional water quality parameters to monitor ARGs reduction in wastewater would make the process less burdensome and economically affordable. In order to establish a robust relationship between the ARGs and water quality parameters, the current study employed different microalgae strains in monoculture (CM2, KL10) and multi-species combinations (CK and WW) for the MWW treatment under outdoor environmental conditions. The studied genes were quantified in the MWW influents and effluents using real-time PCR. All the cultures substantially improved the physicochemical qualities of the MWW. Out of the 14 genes analyzed in this study, tetO, tetW, tetX and ermB were decreased beyond detection within the first 4 days of treatment in all the cultures. Other genes, including blaCTX, sul1, cmlA, aadA, int1 and uidA were also decreased beyond a 2 log reduction value (LRV). The mobile genetic element, int1, correlated positively with most of the ARGs, especially sul1 (r ≤ 0.99, p < 0.01) and aadA (r ≤ 0.97, p < 0.01). Similarly, the Escherichia coli indicator gene, uidA, correlated positively with the studied genes, especially with aadA, blaCTX, blaTEM and cmlA (r ≤ 0.99 for each, p < 0.01). Some of the studied genes also correlated positively with total dissolved solids (TDS) (r ≤ 0.98, p < 0.01), and/or negatively with total suspended solids (TSS) (r ≤ −0.98, p < 0.01) and pH (r ≤ −0.98, p < 0.01). Among the tested cultures, both monocultures, i.e., KL10 and CM2 were found to be more consistent in gene suppression than their multi-species counterparts. The findings revealed water quality parameters such as TDS, TSS and E. coli as reliable proxies for ARGs mitigation in AWWTS and further highlight the superiority of monocultures over multi-species cultures in terms of gene suppression from the MWW stream.

Response of microbial interactions in activated sludge to chlortetracycline

Chlortetracycline (CTC) has attracted increasing attention due to its potential environmental risks. However, its effects on bacterial communities and microbial interactions in activated sludge systems remain unclear. To verify these issues, a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) exposed to different concentrations of CTC (0, 0.05, 0.5, 1 mg/L) was carried out for 106 days. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of COD, TN, and TP were negatively affected, and the system functions could gradually recover at low CTC concentrations (≤0.05 mg/L), but high CTC concentrations (≥0.5 mg/L) caused irreversible damage. CTC significantly altered bacterial diversity and the overall bacterial community structure, and stimulated the emergence of many taxa with antibiotic resistance. Molecular ecological network analysis showed that low concentrations of CTC increased network complexity and enhanced microbial interactions, while high concentrations of CTC had the opposite effect. Sub-networks analysis of dominant phyla (Bacteriodota, Proteobacteria, and Actionobacteriota) and dominant genera (Propioniciclava, a genus from the family Pleomorphomonadaceae and WCHB1-32) also showed the same pattern. In addition, keystone species identified by Z-P analysis had low relative abundance, but they were important in maintaining the stable performance of the system. In summary, low concentrations of CTC enhanced the complexity and stability of the activated sludge system. While high CTC concentrations destabilized the stability of the overall network and then caused effluent water quality deterioration. This study provides insights into our understanding of response in the bacteria community and their network interactions under tetracycline antibiotics in activated sludge system.

Deciphering the internal mechanisms of ciprofloxacin affected anaerobic digestion, its degradation and detoxification mechanism

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is widely used in livestock farms, but the internal mechanism of the effect of residual CIP in actual livestock wastewater on anaerobic digestion (AD) performance remains unknown. This study examined the dose-specific effects of CIP (0.5-2 mg/L) on livestock wastewater AD by analyzing acidogenesis and methanogenesis. 0.5 mg/L CIP promoted methane production by facilitating acidogenesis and acetogenesis. Compared with the control, the cumulative methane production increased from 331.38 to 407.44 mL/g VS at a dose of 0.5 mg/L, an increase of 22.95 %. However, as the dose of CIP increased, the cumulative methane production gradually decreased to 217.64 mL/g VS (2 mg/L). Microbial community analysis revealed that CIP had the greatest impact on methane production by influencing the activity of acidogenic bacteria. Meanwhile, acidogenesis was critical for CIP degradation. In acidogenesis, hydroxylation, amination, defluorination, decarboxylation, and piperazine ring breaking not only degraded CIP but also reduced its toxicity. Therefore, a large number of intermediates could be continuously degraded by microorganisms. However, as the dosage of CIP increased, the ability of microorganisms to degrade intermediates decreased.

Degradation of β-lactam antibiotic ampicillin using sustainable microbial peroxide producing cell system

The enormous use of synthetic antibiotic and personal care products has impacted the natural microbiome and ecosystem. Overtime, treatment technologies developed suffered due to incomplete removal hence, a pilot dual-chambered microbial peroxide-producing cell that degrades ampicillin catalyzed by homogenous Fenton-reaction was designed. The system reported maximum current at 16.714 ± 0.048 µAcm^-2, power output of 1.956 ± 0.015 mW m^-2; 88 ± 2.90 mM of H₂O₂ generation with Na₂SO₄ that degraded 95.9 ± 3.00 to 97.8 ± 3.20% of 10 mg L^-1ampicillin within 72 hrs with electro-active Shewanella putrefaciens. An E. coli bioactivity assay with ampicillin exhibited no sensitivity zone due to the loss of activity. Analytical spectroscopic studies reveal β-Lactam ring deformation; Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy clearly shows the presence of degradation metabolites. A sustainable wastewater treatment with 72 ± 4.5% reduction in anodic chemical oxygen demand was achieved. Present results designate the technology, as promising for effective antibiotics removal for wastewater treatment concomitant with electricity generation.

Intermittent voltage induced sludge polarization to enhance anaerobic digestion

Intermittent voltage supply has been reported to improve the performance of electro-assisted anaerobic digestion but has not been well understood. In this study, an intermittent voltage of 0.6 V (1 day on-1 day off) was applied in an electro-assisted anaerobic digester to explore its effects. Compared to those without the voltage, the methane yield increased nearly by 20.0%, and organic decomposition increased by 9.5% with the intermittent voltage, which was similar to those with the continuous voltage. The amide groups of the sludge protein after the electro-treatment were polarized to enhance electron transfer and electron storage of protein-like substances of the sludge. Although the voltage was supplied intermittently, the increased conductivity and capacitance of the sludge and EPS could effectively transport electrons between exoelectrogens and electrotrophs (such as Firmicutes and Methanothrix) to promote the anaerobic digestion. This study explained the essence of electrochemical enhancement of anaerobic digestion from the perspective of molecular structure, that is, the polarization of functional groups by voltage could improve the sludge electro-activity to maintain effective interspecies electron transfer in the periodic voltage supply.

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of certain antibiotics in 51 urban wastewater treatment plants in the transition zone between North and South China

The release of antibiotics from WWTPs into the environment has raised increasing concern worldwide. The monitoring of antibiotics in WWTPs throughout a region is crucial for emerging pollutant management. A large-scale survey of the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of seven antibiotics in 51 WWTPs was conducted in Shaanxi Province, China. Norfloxacin and ofloxacin had the highest detection concentrations of 474.2 and 656.18 ng L^-1, respectively. Antibiotic residues in effluents were decreased by 5.88-94.16 % after different treatment processes. In particular, A²O or mixed processes performed well in removing target antibiotic compounds simultaneously. The ecological risk posed by antibiotic compounds detected in effluents was calculated using the risk quotient (RQ). Norfloxacin, ofloxacin, tetracycline, and roxithromycin posed different levels of potential ecotoxicological risk (RQ = 0.02-7.59). Based on the sum of the RQ values of individual antibiotic compounds, each investigated WWTP showed potential ecological risk. WWTPs with high risk levels were mainly found in the central region, while those in the southern region exhibited low risk levels, and those in the northern region showed risk levels between medium and high. This comprehensive investigation provides promising results to support the safe use and control of antibiotics in the study area.

Synthesis of novel Fe0-Fe3O4/CeO2/C composite cathode for efficient heterogeneous electro-Fenton degradation of ceftriaxone sodium

Fe⁰-Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and cerium dioxide hollow spheres as efficient heterogeneous electro-Fenton reagents were rationally designed to be embedded in porous carbon derived from skimmed cotton for the electrocatalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium. Skimmed cotton porous carbon material has a hollow tubular structure, and cerium dioxide is dispersed on the surface of the carbon material in a hollow sphere structure of uniform size. Fe⁰-Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were wrapped in irregular particle shapes on the surface of cerium dioxide hollow spheres, and the remaining part was laid flat on the surface of porous carbon material. The as-synthesized Fe⁰-Fe₃O₄/CeO₂/C showed excellent degradation efficiency of 95.59 % for ceftriaxone sodium within 120 mins and obtained a COD removal rate of 95.21 % at 240 mins. The zero-valent iron as a reducing agent effectively accelerated the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ cycle, allowing the composites to exhibit higher catalytic activity and further reducing the possibility of secondary contamination. Moreover, the existence of cerium dioxide further promoted the redox cycle of Ce⁴⁺/Ce³⁺ and accelerated the electron transfer in the interface of the catalyst. The synergistic effect of iron and cerium greatly facilitated the production of hydroxyl radicals and increased the yield of hydroxyl radicals in the reaction system.
